I will be all done with Reeder‘s Digest after all these years. I come from the blame always goes to the top so someone needs to figure out that. If you look at their other reviews, they are pretty much horrible. At least the ones I’ve seen. I have tried calling twice, and send a letter to change my address because nobody seems to be able to handle that I have three copies left. I told the people where they come to keep them. I’m all done. Should not have to waste all this time for something that simple. I keep getting the Philippines for help.

I was never sent my second copy, February's, of Reader's Digest. This was the first time I had ever subscribed to them. When I contacted customer service, I was told my next edition would be the March/April issue. When I replied & said you did NOT address my issue, I never heard from them again. This is why they "auto-renew" your subscription, because that's the only way they can guarantee subscribers. Waste of money even if the cost is a penny! Would not recommend.

      Refunds & PayoutsBilling

      Reviewed Sept. 8, 2025

I am frustrated with the billing practices Reader's Digest (RD) uses to try to trick me into renewing my subscription earlier than needed. I paid for a new 1 year subscription in April, then got a panicky looking "3rd notice" of exploration pending in September. If I didn't keep good records I would be tricked into renewing again. I've been a subscriber with RD for many years and notice this happens a lot. I would like these "offers" to show my actual exploration date somewhere.

I enjoyed the magazine so much many years ago. I saw a special offer and signed up for it. Then I received an special offer for a book at a discount and purchased it. I expected advance notice and the price in advance before receiving any additional books so that I could decide if I wanted it but that didn't happen. Another book arrived and I wrote refused return to sender on the unopened box and returned it at the post office. I was billed for it anyway and that's how I found out the price of the book.

I called the phone number on my credit card statement and customer service said they had no record of billing me. They gave me another number to call for billing. I called that number and was told they had no record and that I should call the first number again. I called the first number which was on my credit card statement again and was told again they had no record of the charge and that I had to call the other number and they gave me that same number again. I called that number again receiving the same answer as before and also found out they were not Reader's Digest billing. They were a different company which also sells magazines but not books. I called the first number again which was the number on my credit card statement and this time which is the third time I called they admitted to billing me and said I will receive a refund which I am now waiting for.

Then I was asked if I would like to renew my magazine subscription which will expire in August. Of course I said no and I also told them to cancel the book subscription. I'm now waiting for email confirmation of my refund and the canceled book subscription. I should have checked the reviews first. Going forward I will read the magazines at the library. No more subscriptions. No more surprise billings and refund requests.

I purchased a gift subscription to Reader’s Digest Canada for a family member, and the family member received the issues up until I was sent a renewal email. I clicked the renewal email and input all of my payment information, but the issues stopped appearing even though I’d renewed the subscription. I phoned customer service, and their representative apologized for the error on their end and let me know that I would get an additional month added to the subscription, but that they couldn’t send me the old, missing issues. We waited. The new issues didn’t appear.

I emailed customer service and I was told by customer service that the gift subscription wouldn’t resume for another four months! I said that it made no sense that there would be a four-month gap between the original subscription and the “renewal” of the subscription, and the representative responded that Reader’s Digest couldn’t send me any back issues, couldn’t restart the subscription any earlier, and basically I should just suck it up. I am really really REALLY not impressed with their customer service. They don’t seem to know what they’re doing when it comes to subscription renewals or dealing with customers either online or on the phone, and one hand is clearly not talking to the other in terms of their customer service and subscription departments. It’s too bad because the family member really loves the magazine - too bad they never receive any issues. I am done with this magazine.

In fact all my childhood I have read all the issues, but today it is more of a money making business rather than a good magazine company. I would like to bring to notice to all that the Reader's Digest monthly issues delivery process is in a mess OR they are doing this on purpose. I paid for the issues 2019-2020 subscription and they are still sending me mails for the 2018-2019 editions in order to pay so that I can be eligible for a car and Rs. 1500000 as per their sweepstakes in my account which I feel is a total fraud.

Till date I have made 3 complaints of non receipt of the issues since i paid up 4 months back. I have been sent some issues in a hurry with repetitions in 2 separate couriers. Every time I call the call center they increase my membership date and ask me to check my mailing address which is so stupid as all other companies are sending all mails to my doorstep. Finally they blame the postal service and say, "sorry." Please be careful and not waste money on this company and instead buy it from the local bookshop vendor in order to avoid such headaches. I think of Reader's Digest with fondness because this magazine could usually be found around our home as common reading fare. Although some serious readers say that digests like RD giving shortened versions of books deprive readers of the much richer reading experience of going through the complete book. On the other hand, they could serve as stepping stones allowing a brief glimpse of the featured book so that readers can get the full book if they liked the abbreviated version. Digests can also serve as trainers for beginning readers to develop the reading habit easily.

The magazine features entertaining human interest articles which tug at the heart, as well as interesting and informative travel and culture articles. However, the articles dealing with politics are quite conservative. RD also has regular sections such as "Laughter, the Best Medicine" which posts humorous anecdotes sent in by readers. I remember using the vocabulary section of back issues as helpful review materials in preparing for school entrance and scholarship exams. I also appreciated the colorful covers with beautiful paintings. With its ubiquitous presence in our home, RD seems like an old, familiar friend.

They always go out of their way to feature great life stories from which you could learn a lot from. One issue of the Reader's Digest could keep me entertained for a whole day. It really lives up to its name. Not having received a single issue of the magazine for 3 months after that, I left a complaint with their customer service online. They emailed me, promising to re-send issues of the magazine and the book. No magazine issues of the book appeared in the mail for another 2 months, so I lodged another complaint, getting no reply this time. Another month later, I disputed the transaction on my credit card and successfully reversed it.

Last week (nearly 9 months after the phone call), I got a threatening email from "Black Collection Services" Sydney informing me of my debt to Reader's Digest Australia of an amount of AUD 49.95. I was directed to pay or suffer loss of credit rating via default registered with Veda Advantage. The email from "Black Collection" had my postal address wrong. This made me realize that they might have mailed magazine issues to the wrong address for a few months until I disputed the transaction, following which they probably stopped. The person who called me offering promotional rate for 1 yr subscription obviously took down my postal address all wrong, which is not my problem.

I lodged another complaint with their customer service explaining the history of the case, demanding they withdraw the collection notice. Now their customer service department appears to ignore the full content of my messages lodged online and annoyingly keeps asking me for proof of payment made. I would strongly advise anyone against dealing with Reader's Digest as their customer service is dumb and callous, resorting to unfriendly tactics when the problem arose from their own mishandling.
