    I was overseas with my wife. She fell and hurt her leg. She had to go to the emergency room and spent all day there. Thank God there was no fracture, but her leg was swollen and she couldn't walk. All Hospital expenses were reimbursed. However the Doctor recommended that she needs to sit with elevated feet. Therefore I requested an upgrade for her to business or first class seat which they denied, and only approved her for premium economy class. Her pain was unbearable to sit with swollen legs for a 10 hour flight and feet down. It took her another few days to be in bed before she was able to walk normally. I really feel that they are not reliable and didn't stand up to their commitment to us.

    I bought 3 plans (for 3 different states). For the second plan the website shows the option of additional coverage's like medical evacuation (which it did not list as a choice for the first plan I bought), so I assumed none was included and bought additional only to find out that I was already plenty covered. I left feeling like you were not clear and because of that I bought more insurance than needed which frustrated me.

    I have used Travelex Insurance Services for many years, but last year there has been reduction of coverage and limits of coverage, which was very disappointing. I even contacted this company to ask what the heck happened, and was told that the company had a new underwriter.     I tried several times to purchase a policy online. I have purchased your product many times in the past, so I assumed this would be simple. I had to start over multiple times. I made several phone calls to explain the problems I was having. Only one person helped me with the problem but no one offered to place the order for me. The day that I called was a very busy day and every time I called for help I was on hold for quite a long time.

    On my last attempt, It was stated that my time had expired & I needed to start all over. I started again for the 4th or 5th time. But before I completed the process, I checked my credit card & there was already a charge for the policy. I called Travelex again & she explained that I did indeed have a policy. Now, I hope that is the case as I would be very upset not to have a policy in place for this upcoming trip. Plus the fact that I may have placed 2 orders. Fortunately, I had the sense to check before I pressed that send button again with my credit card info.

    Do not use Travelex to purchase travel insurance. If you need to change your plans and/or cancel your trip you will need to provide an extensive amount of information and include a statement from a doctor to receive reimbursement. I planned to take a rafting trip. Later, because of a previous medical condition, I decided to cancel the trip. I made this decision without consulting a doctor. The rafting company refunded all but $400 of my down payment. I contacted Travelex (actually Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance) on several occasions. When they did respond, I received the same runaround about needing a signed statement from a physician regarding diagnosis, treatment, and whether I was able to travel. I’ve sent numerous emails that were never answered. Long story short, I would rate this company at zero stars and would not use them to purchase travel insurance.

    My husband was hospitalized for four days with severe food poisoning in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Travelex was extremely helpful while we were in the hospital. We missed our flight to our next destination in southern Thailand. Travelex offered to help us cancel other flights we missed. I didn't ask for a hotel for me to stay in during this time because the hospital provided me a bed to sleep in his room and help take care of him. The hospital was nicer than most US hospitals I've seen.

    After he was released from the hospital, Travelex gave us the option of either returning home early or catching us up with our trip. We chose the second option. They paid for a beautiful hotel for us to stay in Chiang Mai so he could fully recover, then paid for a flight to Bangkok so we could take our original return flight home. They paid for non-refundable costs of hotels, activities, and flights that we missed. Once we returned home, filing the claims was easy and we received a check in the mail two weeks later for the full amount we requested - no questions asked.

    I can't believe how easy this insurance company was to deal with and how helpful they were while my husband was sick in the hospital. Great 24/7 customer service representatives (English-speaking Americans). I would recommend them to a friend. I insured my upcoming trip to Italy with them and will continue to use them in the future!

    While on vacation we had an issue where my wife's sunglasses were stolen. We were even able to catch the guy who did it on camera at the restaurant we were eating at. While there was little that we could do legally to retrieve the item, I was reassured by the fact I bought travel insurance which covered my items. Unfortunately the fine print labels key items such as eyeglasses un-insurable. If I had read all the items that were not going to be covered, I would not have purchased this plan. They should be more forthcoming about what is covered and what is not.

    First of all, getting rid of the yearly policies was a REALLY bad ideas for business travelers. Nevertheless, we went ahead and purchased a single policy for a roundtrip overseas business flight. For AD&D only. When his boss decided at the last minute to extend the trip from June 8th until June 15th... totally out of my husband's control... they told us there was NO WAY to amend the insurance. Really?     We have travel/cruised twice a year for the past 6+ years and being in our senior years we ALWAYS purchase Travelex Insurance. While traveling with friends a few years ago, whom we encouraged to also by Travelex insurance, they experienced a medical condition that left them disembarked in a foreign country. Travelx served them well, very well indeed.

    We never thought that something like that would ever happen to us, but it did, just 3 months ago while in Sydney Australia in route to catch a cruise ship to New Zealand. My wife was hospitalized there for 10 days and our American medical insurance was useless to us. If we had not had Travel Insurance the hospital would not have admitted her without a VERY VERY large cash deposit. To make matters worse, our cruise ship left without us.

    I found it misleading the term "upgrade" regarding auto insurance. It seemed to me that "upgrade" implies you already are covered to some level with car insurance and "upgrade" means if you wish to get additional coverage. The policy that you purchased comes with a base level of coverage, from there you can add or increase different benefits as you need for your trip.     I have purchased many Travelex policies in past years. Many time I have not purchase the trip cancellation part of the coverage. I did this by filling out all the information on the first page, then going to the second page and checking the box that said "delete trip cancellation." I attempted to do the same this time but could not find the box to check to delete the trip cancellation coverage. I looked everywhere, and filled out the form a few times to be sure I wasn't making a mistake. Finally, frustrated, I call an agent. He told me that the company had switched carriers last November and changed the way coverage was ordered, and that the checkbox was no longer used. He instructed me to enter one dollar as the cost of the trip, which I did and got the policy. I believe you should have explained this change on the first page of the application to keep from causing the frustration I had.

    In October 2017 I traveled to Africa for vacation and knowing that something always happens I purchased this travel insurance through my travel agent at a cost of about $500 per person. When Mozambique air canceled my flight from Maputo to Inhambane due to what the airline called operational reasons, I was stuck in Maputo and missed a already paid for and non-refundable night at my five-star resort in Massinga. Mozambique Air would not provide a specific reason for the cancellation but we were told by the hotel that we had to stay at that they have been canceling flights for this route for several days.

    This delay in my trip was not covered by Travelex because it was not one of the very specific reasons they have listed on the policy (and the airline but not provide the details). Did result in a delay in my travel plans which is listed on the policy. So what is the point of having travel insurance if they're not going to cover trip delays due to airline issues that are out of the control of the client. We lost $600 in accommodation fees and $1000 we spent on this worthless insurances. I believe this was a result of a loophole in the policy and poor client service from Travelex.

    I actually have experience with Emergency Evacuation and Medical Repatriation under a policy with another company, but arranged by On Call International. My wife broke her leg in the jungle, had to be transported to a local hospital for surgery, and was in the hospital for 12 days. When she was released, she was basically immobile, and needed a medical escort to help transport her home. The policy covered the expenses and On Call made all the arrangements. Over the past year, I have used Travelex, mainly because Travelex would cover exactly this situation and includes assistance from On Call.

    Travelex has now changed insurance carriers to Berkshire Hathaway, and their coverage is significantly inferior to the previous carrier. The Travelex policies will no longer provide transportation to your place of residence to recover after being treated, but only to a medical facility even if that level of care is not necessary and even if you are incapable of traveling without assistance. Berkshire Hathaway, by comparison with other carriers, offers mainly "bare bones" coverage. As a result, I am no longer using Travelex but have found alternatives that provide less restrictive medical evacuation/repatriation coverage and still provide travel assistance through On Call.

    We have recently changed underwriters to Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (Berkshire), however the relationship, benefits, and the services offered by On Call International have not changed on our Travel Basic and Travel Select plans. All the benefits and services that On Call provided before are still available to our insured travelers.

    On the last page of the Travel Basic and Travel Select Policy details, which explains the benefits of On Call International, it states the following:

    Medical Evacuation – When medically necessary, we will arrange and pay for appropriate transportation, including an escort, if required, to a suitable hospital, treatment facility, or home.

    Under the Policy, you would also be eligible for reimbursement, either to On Call International, or yourself, for the Medical Evacuation costs. On Page 10 of the Policy Details it offers the below information.

    Emergency Evacuation - means:

    (a) Transportation from the place where You are Injured or sick to the nearest adequate licensed medical facility where appropriate medical treatment can be obtained; …

    ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

    In addition to the above covered expenses, if the Company has previously evacuated You to a medical facility, the Company will reimburse You Your airfare costs, less refunds from Your Unused transportation tickets, from that facility to Your Return Destination or home…

We did a quick comparison to a previously purchased policy and found that the price on our new policy was less for similar coverage.

    Regarding your concern about the length of the policy details, we are required to make sure all the information in the Policy is available to our travelers. While we want to make sure you read it in full, it is not required to bring it with you, on the trip. When you purchased the policy, you received a single page brief description of the policy (Confirmation of Coverage), with your name and an outline of the benefits. Since this document also contains all the emergency numbers, we recommend that you take this with you, while traveling.

    I have been trying to find out if our policy covers helicopter rescue. We will be in the Himalayas and will need this service. So far, the 24 hour phone number (outside of the US) on or off policy info is not 24 hour (7-8 M-F). The rep we’ve spoken to in email gave us no option for upgrading our coverage and certainly didn’t advise us on whether it was covered with or current plan. So far, I’ve gotten a claim form.     I have used Travelex for groups before and done it with an agent. I did it myself this time but there was no group option available to me as I could not meet the minimum requirements. These minimum requirements are excessive. I run 1-3 trips a year of 30-60 people. Since I had no group option I had to enter 52 individual entries, 52 payment information details and review 52 payment transactions. This also meant downloading 52 confirmations. Other sites offered a group option but were much more expensive. I would love if Travelex could offer a group option to those other than agents.

    We have used Travelex Insurance for past vacations and this year decided to use them again due to their good price, seemingly good coverage, and friendly service. Travel insurance is a must for our family and we never book a vacation without it. I purchased the policy in July for our December vacation to Mexico. In October we found out we were pregnant. The pregnancy was confirmed to be 8 weeks gestation in November.

    This is my sixth pregnancy. 3 of my pregnancies ended before 12 weeks of gestation, one pregnancy was a twin pregnancy in which I carried them until 21 weeks and lost them, and one pregnancy was successful in which I gave birth to my son who is now two. With the twin pregnancy, we actually cancelled our vacation as per doctor’s suggestions but ended up losing the pregnancy anyways. So we were without our babies and had already cancelled our trip. Luckily we were insured by a different travel insurance company and were refunded promptly.

    Due to our past issues with making it through the first trimester of pregnancy, as well as the past experience where we cancelled a trip only to lose the pregnancy anyways, I waited to cancel our trip until our 12 week appointment in which our pregnancy was confirmed to be viable. If we did happen to miscarry before that point, we fully intended on going on our vacation. In the beginning of the Travelex policy it states that "Benefit would be provided for losses incurred by you for a covered trip cancelled up to the date and time of departure".

    My 12 week doctor's appointment was 8 days before the scheduled departure of our trip. I called Travelex two weeks prior to our 12 week appointment to ensure that I was covered. The representative told me yes and briefly explained the claims process and sent me the form. No mention was made about rushing the cancellation, and according to the statement in the policy, we have until time of departure to cancel the trip. I cancelled the trip the same day as our 12 week appointment and sent the claims paperwork to Travelex the very next day.

    2 weeks later when I called to inquire about our claim, we were informed that only $375.00 of our $2500.00 trip was being refunded because we did not cancel our trip immediately after our first appointment in which I was only 8 weeks pregnant and still at risk for miscarriage. However, due to the issues with my pregnancy I feel I was justified in waiting until the 12 week mark to cancel our trip and that’s the whole point of having insurance in the first place. I am disappointed that their policy is not as straightforward as it seems. I am filing my appeal today with the Travelex Claims Department. I am hoping they will make this right for us. I will be back to let everyone know the outcome.

    I prefer buying your flight insurance from a kiosk at the airport but I regret that this service has been discontinued. I wish you would reinstate the airport on-site service and also because I was not able to fill out the online form on my Android phone. All my email addresses were all rejected as not valid. The form also had issues with filling it out. The blank space (to fill in) wouldn't let me scroll down to choose the correct country. Fortunately my husband had a computer so we were able to fill it out. Finding the form to buy insurance on your website was also extremely hard. It was buried under layers of other non relevant insurance offers.

    Otherwise have been buying your flight insurance since 1971.

    We purchased Travelex insurance for a European trip 3 weeks before we were due to leave and about halfway through completing our trip hotel bookings. A week before we were due to leave my wife experienced prolonged dizzy spells and nausea. She'd had these before but they had always cleared up after a few hours. This time they continued for days so we went to the doctor who (for the first time diagnosed "Meniere's disease and recommended against travel). Travelex denied our claim. Be aware of the fine print - if you see a doctor for any reason within the 60 days before your departure date they will deny coverage. When I asked, "Can you at least refund our premium since you declined coverage and had no risk?" Their answer was "nope - read the fine print". My advice? Don't waste your money!

    The Travel Select policy is a Named Peril Policy, which means that the policy outlines the coverages included, and any reason for cancellation must be listed and occur after the effective date of the policy, which is 12:01 am, the day after purchase.

    The policy that you purchased, includes 17 different covered reasons for trip cancellation. However, it also includes exclusions such as for

    Pre-existing conditions, as defined by the policy. Your policy did provide Trip Cancellation protection, had you canceled due to any of the covered reasons, including a sickness or injury that was not a pre-existing condition.

    Unfortunately, due to the plan’s specific covered reasons and exclusions as described in the Description of Coverage, we are unable to consider a premium refund past the Ten Day Free Look Period.

    We scheduled a trip to Croatia for mid-September. Unfortunately, Hurricane Irma had other ideas. After a mandatory evacuation and no admittance back to our home for over a week, we came home to find a 100 foot tree on our house. We were scheduled to leave the next morning.     I found the policy to misleading; in reality there was no coverage for me even though my bag which was delayed 4 days--the luggage started out in the coverage period.     The Description of Coverage was emailed to you, at the email provided, when the policy was purchased on November 2, 2016 at 11:36pm. The Description of Coverage includes the benefits, coverages, and limitations, and it states the following:

    Baggage Delay Benefits
    We will reimburse you up to the amount shown in the Schedule for the cost of reasonable additional clothing and personal articles purchased by you, if your Baggage is delayed for 12 hours or more during your Covered Trip. We will also reimburse you up to $25 for expenses incurred during your Covered Trip to expedite the return of your delayed Baggage.

    This coverage terminates upon your arrival Home or to your original scheduled destination.

    When Coverage Ends
    Your coverage automatically ends on the earlier of:
    1. the date the Covered Trip is completed;
    2. the Scheduled Return Date;
    3. cancellation of the Covered Trip covered by the plan;

    4. your arrival at the return destination on a round-trip, or the destination on a one-way trip.

    The claim documents received by our Claim Administrator reflect that the items being claimed were purchased after you arrived home and after your coverage ended; therefore no reimbursement is due.

    Not only did I find out I had cancer a month before I was to leave for Europe, the insurance I purchased from Transamerica Casualty Insurance Company through Travelex is refusing to pay the claim. A nurse that filled out form made a mistake on dates but it was subsequently corrected with a letter from the Dr. They are using the mistake to deny the claim. I even sent copy of biopsy. I later heard they do this type thing all the time. Careful dealing with this company.
