What is Travelex Insurance?

Travelex provides travel insurance that protects you financially when traveling, whether you become ill or your luggage is lost or damaged.

Travelex Insurance Services covers costs that a traditional insurance plan does not. If you are hurt or become ill overseas, your health insurance may cover reasonable medical costs associated with your condition but not an emergency evacuation back to the U.S. or other expenses associated with an overseas emergency. Travel insurance takes care of the things that traditional insurance does not.

Travelex also reimburses you if your luggage is delayed or lost in transit. Delayed luggage can dramatically impact your trip, and travel insurance ensures you are quickly reimbursed so you can use the funds to purchase necessities and enjoy your vacation.

Traveling can be stressful and unpredictable, but having Travelex travel insurance means you won’t have to pay for everything out of pocket if something goes wrong.

Travelex Insurance services

Travelex trip insurance offers five different coverage options:

Travel Basic
This basic plan is ideal for a traveler on a budget. It provides coverage for the most common interruptions and emergencies that occur on short, domestic vacations. With this plan, 100% of your trip costs are refunded if you have to cancel due to sickness, injury, death, bad weather, natural disasters, financial default, labor strikes or business reasons. Other popular features of this plan include:
  • Trip delay coverage: $500 ($250 a day)
  • Baggage delay: $100
  • Emergency medical expenses: $15,000 ($500 dental sublimit)
  • Missed connections: $500
Travel Select
This Travelex Insurance plan is the most popular option, according to the company. Children who are 17 and under are covered at no additional cost, and families planning on adding adventure to their vacation can add on the optional Adventure Sports upgrade. This covers activities like mountain climbing, parasailing and hot air ballooning. Delays happen, and this coverage option includes a three-hour missed connection benefit and a five-hour trip delay benefit. Other popular features of this plan include:
  • Trip delay: $750 ($250 a day)
  • Equipment delay: $200
  • Missed connection: $750
  • Baggage and personal effects: $1,000
Travel America
This insurance plan is designed to offer maximum coverage for short getaways within the United States. It covers trips to national and theme parks, short weekend staycations, road trips and stays in vacation rental homes/resorts. This plan covers up to eight travelers for trips no longer than 15 days. Travelers can share benefits, and the plan offers a $750 trip cancellation benefit. Other popular features of this plan also include:
  • Missed connection: $2,000
  • Trip inconvenience: $1,000
  • Baggage and personal effects: $2,000
  • Pet medical expenses: $1,000 ($50 deductible)
  • Pet return transportation: $10,000
Flight insurance
An airline flight can be one of the most expensive parts of a vacation, and it can cost time and money when your trip is delayed or you miss your plane. Adding Travelex flight insurance into your travel budget gives you two options.
  • The Flight Only option provides coverage specifically for flight accidents and includes trip delay coverage for internet usage fees and travel assistance services.
  • The Package Plan includes everything in the Flight Only plan but also covers standard claims that can take place after departure, including medical coverage, medical evacuation and baggage coverage.
Business travel insurance
Ideal for business travelers, Travelex’s business travel insurance covers both domestic and international business travel. It offers different levels of cancellation coverage and covers the cost of a trip delay. If you are renting a car for business and it is damaged due to collision, vandalism, windstorm, fire, hail or flood, the plan covers you financially.

Travelex also offers cruise insurance, coverage for international travel, family travel protection and baggage insurance.

Travelex Insurance trip cost

Your Travelex Insurance premiums are based on your vacation’s total cost and how many people require coverage. Below are examples of what travel insurance for a 35-year-old solo traveler would cost as of time of publishing for a weeklong trip that costs $1200.

Plan typeCost
Travel America (U.S. destinations only)$60
Travel Basic$68
Travel Select$89

Prices vary depending on the total cost of the trip and the level of protection you need.

In October, 2025 I insured an $11,000 international trip with Travelex Insurance Company. They process their claims through Zurich Travel Claims. My trip was planned for November, 2025. Unfortunately my mother had a serious car accident the week after I made my trip reservations and insured my trip, so I had to cancel my trip and I filed a travel reimbursement claim with Travelex/Zurich Travel Claims. The claim process took a long time but that is not why I am rating this company with only one star. I had booked a hotel near my departure airport the night before my flight left the country. I did not realize that, in my obvious attempt to insure my full trip, I had to make the insurance start date the day before my flight (when I would check into the hotel) instead of the hotel being included from the check-out date.

I also want to point out that I unnecessarily insured my airfare which was more than $6,000. So Travelex received an insurance premium on $6,000 that I did not have to insure (because it turned out my air tickets were fully refundable). Travelex/Zurich Travel Claims has denied my reimbursement claim for the one-night hotel stay near the airport on the night before my early morning flight, even though they received a premium for the $6,000 airfare that I did not have to file a claim for. I received the standard boilerplate rejection language of "... our terms and conditions...". We all know that Travelex could make an exception and reimburse me for the one-night pre-flight hotel stay if they wanted to do so. But they don't want to, so they're just keeping all the extra premium from my refundable airfare and showing no consideration of the terrible circumstances under which I had to cancel my trip.

I will be re-planning the same trip this coming summer, and I will insure that trip, but I will NOT insure it with Travelex. I strongly advise anyone who is in the market to purchase travel insurance to skip Travelex and choose a different travel insurance company for your coverage. On a separate consumer complaint website where I also published a poor review, someone from Travelex replied and asked me to contact them at ** for assistance. Their reply did not include a valid domain name to actually contact someone. I think they were playing games with the consumer complaint website to make the website think they responded to the complaint. Again, I advise everyone to AVOID TRAVELEX INSURANCE SERVICES for your travel insurance needs. They will try to use the fine print in the contract to weasel out of legitimate claims.

We had two simple problems on our recent cruise, for which we paid Travelex$1521 for an Advantage policy. 1) My husband left his carry-on bag in the taxi on the way to the airport, and the driver was not able to return with it in time to make our flight. We put a claim in $235.52 to cover a clinic visit in Singapore and prescriptions so that he would have his daily life-saving medications for the trip. Later in the trip, my husband caught a flu/cold and remained in our ship cabin two dates, preventing him from attended pre-booked, non-refundable excursions, for which we put a claim in for $366. For the first claim we provided the medical file, prescription receipts and a note from the taxi driver confirming the bag was left behind.

For the second claim we provided unused excursion tickets, receipts and a letter from the cruise ship confirming my husband's illness an absence from the excursion. After two months of back-and-forth, multiple requests for additional information, and more than a dozen phone calls, Travelex declined both simple claims. I cannot image what they would put you through with a more complicated claim. Avoid Travelex.

I am extremely disappointed with Travelex Insurance Services. They are a terrible company to work with— Incredibly slow to process anything and completely unwilling to assist policyholders who face actual travel issues. Despite having a legitimate claim with supporting evidence, I have been met with nothing but roadblocks and delays. It is clear they prioritize collecting premiums over providing the coverage they promise. I will not be using them again and will be advising my entire network to avoid this company at all costs. Do yourself a favor and find a provider that actually values its customers.

The day we were leaving Paris for Budapest we arrived at the metro in the morning to an unbelievable crowd. We couldn't fit on the crowded trains with all of our luggage. The delay at the metro caused us to miss the SCNF to the Beauvais airport which then caused us to miss our flight. When trying to get on the next flight we were told that there was a taxi strike causing the metro to be overcrowded. We had no idea or we could have planned ahead. Travelex will not reimburse a dime because the travel insurance "doesn't cover taxis" even though we were taking the metro. They are also calling this a "known event" because the taxi strike was announced in the French news. Unfortunately since we were on vacation we were not reading or watching the news.

When I filed a claim over the phone the rep told me to take screenshots of news articles reporting about the taxi strike because I would be asked for proof of the metro being over-crowded. She said to look it up right away so you can find the articles. This may have been worse than not having proof because it looked like I should have known! Also, we had apps for the metro and were checking if all was well with the regular metro and SCNF but we were not checking if transportation we were not taking was ok (taxis).

I feel their decision was unfair. We incurred the added cost of a hotel in France for a night, paying for our missed hotel in Budapest, a new flight (because RyanAir had no flights for 2 days), airport food, and more Ubers. I am also out the almost $400 for this worthless trip insurance. I am so sad! We literally saved for 10 years to go on this trip and I thought travel insurance would help us stay within our budget but the loopholes can be used against you even when they should not pertain to your situation.

We canceled timely, but they accused us of not paying THEM INITIALLY in a timely manner although they ACCEPTED the check and told us we were covered. In other words, THEY SCAMMED US. We have called numerous times and talked to somebody numerous times and we are now ready to get an attorney involved. Do not buy insurance from them or probably anyone else unless you really check out their reputation. All I see are bad reviews now that we’re looking. This was our thoughtful insurance for our retirement money. Boy were we wrong.

      Reviewed Sept. 6, 2023

My husband and I bought a basic "Travel Basic" Travelex insurance plan for a June 2023 trip to Europe. Our primary concern when buying this insurance was to ensure we'd be covered if we had to quarantine because of Covid. When researching our insurance, I was reassured by the following statements on the Travelex website:

"Travelex's trip delay coverage can reimburse you for additional travel expenses, like lodging and meals, until you’re able to move on to your final destination. With this coverage, you can relax and focus on your trip instead of worrying about the extra costs added to your travel budget."

"If you test positive for coronavirus while traveling, you will want to follow the doctor’s orders on where to quarantine. You may quarantine in either a hospital, hotel, or vacation rental (such as an Airbnb) while on your trip and still be eligible for up to the trip delay benefit limit to help cover additional hotel and meal expenses as well as emergency medical and emergency evacuation coverage."

"How long will my policy extend coverage if I am required to quarantine? Coverage will automatically extend to the date you reach your return destination and benefits will be paid up to the policy limits, as long as you return as soon as you are fit to fly or once your quarantine period is over."

After reading these statements, I misinterpreted the information on our policy about the trip-delay maximum limit for our plan. We did, in fact, catch Covid during the last days of our trip and had to quarantine in a hotel in Boston for 5 days before we could fly home to North Carolina. We had no choice but to isolate for 5 days in the hotel where we had planned to spend 1 night, and the hotel required that we not leave our room during that time.

The trip-delay maximum coverage per person is listed on our policy as "$500 ($250/day)." In hindsight, it's pretty clear that this means the maximum trip delay benefit we could receive was $1000 for the two of us. Given the above reassuring statements on the website regarding Covid quarantine coverage, however, I read this to mean a maximum of $500 PER DAY (i.e., no more than two people at $250 each per day) because, of course, if you're being covered for a Covid quarantine, you must be covered for 5 days. In hindsight, stupid me. We received $1000, as per our policy, just enough to reimburse us for cost of the policy in the first place.

Thank you for taking the time to post your concerns on ConsumerAffairs.com, we appreciate your feedback.

We do empathize and recognize that the Coronavirus Pandemic has created a difficult situation for travelers. Travelex Insurance, the travel industry, and the world at large are dealing with unprecedented interruptions due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

It is important to remember that insurance is highly regulated, and documentation is required to file a claim. The policy purchased is a Named Peril Policy, which means that any eligible reason for cancellation is listed in the policy. Therefore, not all unforeseen events may be eligible for coverage under the policy. Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company’s (“BHSIC”) is the underwriter and claim administrator for your policy. Travelex Insurance does not make claim determinations.

We have contacted BHSIC and have been advised that a claim was filed. They did contact you in March 2021 to complete the Claim Form, proof of payment and refund documentation, to re-review your claim for travel insurance benefits.

If you still have a claim to file and would like to provide additional information to request reconsideration, or have any additional questions you may contact BHSIC at 855.205.6054 option 2, Monday - Friday: 7:00 am-7:00pm CT, or by email at travelex.claims@bhspecialty.com.

Thank you for choosing Travelex Insurance Services Inc. (“Travelex Insurance”).

We acknowledge your frustration regarding the claim process. It is important to remember that insurance is highly regulated. Documentation is an important part of the policy modification process, as it relates to the Travel Select plan you purchased.

BHSIC indicates that you submitted documentation to support your claim on several dates, with the latest submission occurring on May 13, 2020. The Travel Select plan that you purchased is a Named Peril Policy, which means that the policy lists all reasons and exclusions for coverage, and if the situation is listed as an exclusion, then coverage does not apply. The Confirmation of Coverage and the Policy were emailed to you at the time of purchase on March 1, 2020 for your review, which included the benefits, terms, limitations, and exclusions.

In the wake of the rapidly changing and escalating global impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Travelex Insurance is focusing our teams to respond to your questions and inquiries as soon as possible. Our top priority is servicing our clients and we can assure you Travelex Insurance is dedicated to maintaining the highest level of professional and ethical standards.

I purchased the policy at the beginning of March 2020 for a trip to Israel, for treatment at the Dead Sea, starting May 30 until June 9, 2020. At that time they supposed to be aware of the fact that at the end of February Israel was already affected by the Covid-19 and was putting travelers in quarantine. Why they sold me the policy and refusing now to return my money? I am a 66 years old woman, a breast cancer survivor and considered at high risk. Where am I going when everything was cancelled and nobody knows when this pandemic will stop and when is going to be safe for me to travel?

Being old and due to my health, this was my last planned trip at the Dead Sea. I do not know if I will be able to go next year or the following, in order to get use of the policy. For now I do not appreciate for them to refuse returning my pay, once there is no trip and no services provided. I called them so many times, the hold is unbearable, there is no way to reach them. I will tell all my friends about this horrible experience and horrible travel insurance!

I booked three policies for a cruise for my family for May 2019. All cruises were cancelled by the U.S government mandate due to Covid19. I rescheduled the cruise for June 2019 and transferred the insurance to the new date. Again the government mandate cancelled our cruise due to Covid19 and the Travelex policy is they won't change the trip dates a second time. Seems like an exception should be made for Covid 19 like the airlines and cruise lines have done but customer service agent said no. I just lost $295.00.

My girlfriend and I traveled overseas for 2 months this January and February. She ended up getting really sick in the 2nd month of our trip and we frequently had to go to clinics and urgent cares for her to get checked out. She ended up having to go to the ER one night and a small operation done. $4000 later in medical bills and we were quite nervous. Filed a claim with Travelex with documentation from the Doctors on what happened and our policy covered the whole thing! Tremendous financial and stress relief for us and the process was fairly easy. I was able to get my money back for the hotel for the 2 nights I was unable to complete along with the 2 nights that had to be purchased in lieu. The process was a bit lengthy with the back and forth especially since I was abroad and unable to call the states. During this time, Travelex was also dealing with an uptick of requests caused by the COVID-19 impact. Overall, I am happy with the service and plan to use them again for future solo travels!!

Spoke with a helpful customer service agent today who resolved this: reissued new policy and issued credit.

      Original Review: April 5, 2020

We purchased a plan for 2 people in December 2019 for a trip planned for May 2020. Due to coronavirus the trip was cancelled, though we rebooked travel to another destination and date. I reached out to the company in early March and was 1st unable to reach anyone by phone for 2 weeks (their phones were not operative). Then reached out via email. I asked them if we could transfer our policy to the new trip, plus the new trip cost less. I was told, YES, they would do this. I sent them a detailed list of the new charges, their CS person JacLyn again confirmed this would be done.

After waiting 2 weeks and getting NOTHING from them, I opened a ticket with my credit card company refusing to pay and asking for a full refund. I again contacted them, spoke with a supervisor who said, yes they would issue a new policy. I closed the ticket with the credit card company, they issued me a letter on March 15 indicating the ticket was closed. I emailed Travelex, clearly told them the ticket was closed because they claimed they could not issue a new policy or refund until the credit card company closed the "OPEN TICKET".

On March 16th I sent them all the documentation needed and I have yet to received the revised policy, even though they tell consumers they will issue a one time transfer. I have sent them full documentation and they don't reply. This company will do everything not to honor their agreements. Will be opening up a new ticket with my credit card company, requested a FULL refund. This company will not see a penny.

I wrote a very unfriendly review when I could not get through to this company on the telephone. However, after I did get to talk to an actual person, their performance has been stellar. I feel a little guilty about the first review, as these are crazy times, but in my mind they have redeemed themselves. I would recommend them with the caveat that they are a little overwhelmed on the telephone right now. Of course, I suspect anyone connected with the travel industry is in the same boat (no pun intended).

I don't understand how people could write a positive review when it took me over 25 minutes just for them to answer the phone! What should be a simple thing to fix is still unresolved after two days of "communication". I know it must be a crazy time for them, but my time is valuable too. I could in no way recommend them to anyone. And now I have just been told I have to call them tomorrow, and start all over!

      Updated review: Feb. 28, 2020

Updated from 1 to 3 stars. Travelex finally contacted me. There was mass confusion basically for 2 reasons:

      1. Travelex "retail" policies differ from Perillo's contracted policy with Travelex, so much of what is online does not apply to Perillo customers, and it almost appears as if there are 2 or 3 different retail policies, for which Perillo customers do not have those kinds, leading to confusion on what's covered. In fact, Perillo does not notify Travelex of their covered travelers until a couple weeks before travel, so that's one reason Travelex never established a relationship with the customer.

      2. Travelex did not anticipate the sheer call volume from the coronavirus issue, overloading their phone lines (which makes their phone numbers appear non-working/non-legitimate), and not responding to customers in a timely fashion, and having them on hold forever. Since Travelex itself excludes insurance coverage for the coronavirus for insurance purchased after "risk became known" in January, one would think Travelex themselves would have beefed up their own call centers/customer service to deal with the volume since then. It seems amazing they did not anticipate this.

      Original Review: Feb. 28, 2020

My wife and I booked a trip through Perillo Tours for Italy in April. Of course, the coronavirus outbreak has us asking questions. When I tried to call Travelex, 2 of the numbers listed (one from Perillo, and one from Travelex on their policy) are not even working. So I went to their website and called a couple days ago. We just had questions about our policy. But after being on hold for more than 8 minutes of dead silence, I hung up. I then e-mailed them that day with my questions. Now it's 2 days later and they STILL haven't responded! And we paid them $800 for "travel insurance"! If it's this hard to just get hold of them, I can imagine what it's like to file a claim! I will NEVER do business with Travelex again in my life. I guess that's how Warren Buffett got rich, by owning scam outfits like this one (it's a Berkshire-Hathaway company), and then washing his hands of its scammy practices, such as ignoring the consumer.

I've also been reading here that they offer 2 kinds of insurance: Select or Basic, but we were never given a choice when we signed up, as far as I remember. We don't even know what kind of policy we have, being sent only a link to a generic policy via Perillo. Travelex has established zero relationship. They just take the money and sit back, apparently. And they are also denying claims based on whether the country issues a "travel advisory" (which Perillo said would cancel the trip and we would be refunded all our money, including insurance) in some cases because "your policy is a Named Peril" policy, and "travel advisory" from the country is not a reason for a claim.

In other words, they sell you a generic policy ($$), do not establish a relationship with you or answer questions, then later deny claims by saying that you purchased an X, Y, or Z policy? Totally unethical and not transparent. God, I only hope we never have to file a claim with this unresponsive company, which "prides itself on its customer service". What a joke.
