    After consulting online with reviews, Travelex was and is the best option for travel insurance for my wife and I, both of us in good health and in our mid-seventies..     Purchased Travelex insurance last year for a trip. I studied insurance companies online, and Travelex was highly recommended. The trip was cancelled due to the country of Kashmir being shut off from travel and internet. I filed a claim, Travelex denied the claim. I was granted no settlement or consideration. I have since found out that other companies would have covered this (i.e. AAA, Allianz).

    The Travel Select plan that you purchased includes several covered events, which are listed in the policy details, that are eligible for reimbursement if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip. The policy details were sent to you via email, on February 8, 2019, when the policy was purchased.

    It is always important to review the details, to ensure that the correct policy is being purchased to fit your travel needs. The exclusions listed on the Travel Select plan are generally standard in the travel insurance industry and do reference very specific scenarios.

    For future travel, while Civil Unrest and Political Upheaval are not eligible covered reasons under the base Travel Select plan that you purchased, the plan does offer a Cancel for Any Reason upgrade. This upgrade allows travelers to cancel for any reason, as long as all purchase and cancellation requirements are met.

    We recommend you contact your travel agent/agency for any possible refunds they may be able to obtain from travel suppliers, due to their cancelling of your trip.

    Because of the rapidly spreading coronavirus, which is centered in China and rapidly spreading worldwide, the U.S. government has issued a warning not to travel to China. U.S. airlines have cancelled all flights to China. We want to cancel our April 8 trip to China, but Travelex says the virus, government warning and cancelled flights are not valid reasons to collect trip insurance. A Travelex agent says, “Fear of travel and travel advisories are not covered.” Travelex has sold us useless travel insurance.

    Updated on 02/11/2020: The review system on this website doesn't allow me to respond to the company's response so I'm creating a new review. In response to my original review Travelex wrote back that they responded to me within 5 business days. That's factually incorrect. It was over 10 business days before I received a missed phone call. Final documentation was received on January 3. The first call from your team was January 17. I called back within minutes and no response. You don't provide any way to schedule a call. I called and talked to another team member who wasn't able to help. I wasn't able to connect with the claims administrator until January 31. You provide a poor user experience, poor customer service, and consumers should look elsewhere for travel insurance.

    Original Review: I was planning to travel to New Zealand and purchased a $448 Travel Select Plan from Travelex. There was a measles outbreak in the country with over 1726 cases reported in the Auckland area (1 in 1000 Auckland residents affected). I cancelled my trip and submitted a claim with Travelex. It took over a month for them to get back to me only to share that virus outbreaks are not covered. The customer service representative was unable to share additional information and I'm left wondering why I would ever work with Travelex again. I'm out the cost of my trip and the cherry on top is out the cost of the insurance premium I expected to cover unexpected cancellations due to disease outbreaks.

    I was given very inaccurate advice from a Travelex rep on 1/17 about filling out the online application. Second I received an inaccurate email saying that my policy purchase had not been completed. 3 An otherwise helpful rep on 1/22 told me that several fields on the application (Like originating airline) were "extra credit" i.e I didn't have to fill them out. If they are optional, you should make that clear to applicants. Otherwise we spend unnecessary time telephoning you or otherwise worrying.

    I bought a Travelex Travel Select insurance plan on my flight from Dallas, Texas to Dalian, China with a layover in Seoul on 10/25/19. When I landed in Seoul, I got a call from my mother that my father was dying and to turn around and head home as soon as possible. My father died during my return trip. On 10/28, I contacted Travelex for assistance filing my claim. I followed-up on 11/1 and then 12/9 and again on 1/13. I NEVER HEARD BACK ANY OF THOSE TIMES.

    I finally tried to file everything on my own with no assistance. That was several weeks ago. I uploaded my father's death certificate and every bot of evidence that I could, as well as the forms I could find. Again, I e-mailed another two times and NO RESPONSE. They aren't giving me the runaround. I am getting no response at all. I live in China, so it is hard for me to call during US business hours. That is why I have used the e-mail(s) that the company has provided. They should do better than just an auto-response. If someone from the company read this, my policy # is ** and claim # is **.

What would make me happier since I buy a lot of policies is for you to give me a quicker way to buy the policy without having to keep giving you my information and listening to a bunch of disclaimers every time I call in.     Your website needs to be updated or fixed because to order my policy online, I had to redo it numerous times because it would not submit the information. So I had to review the policy and remove certain things, I.e. my travel partner (my husband Frank’s name) was not able to be entered for my policy to be submitted and issued. This also happened with my husband's policy as he was not able to add my name to his policy for travel partner, his policy number is **. It also wouldn’t take my cc number although eventually it did, so not sure of the problem there.

    I was extremely disappointed to find out that train passes are excluded from coverage under the baggage & personal effects coverage. As those are very common travel documents, just like a passport or visa. I wonder how many others purchase coverage thinking the passes would be included. I would stongly urge you to clarify what the "travel documents" are in the verbage, or clarify speifically what travel documents are NOT covered by the insurance.

    We would like to take a moment to explain the Travel Basic policy purchased. The Baggage and Personal Effects benefit is for instances where your baggage or personal items are damaged, lost, or stolen. While all forms of tickets are excluded, most tickets can be re-printed or saved digitally.

    Having said the above, coverage for tickets is available under the Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption benefits. In event that you need to Cancel or Interrupt your trip due to a covered reason, you would be eligible for reimbursement for the cost of the Train Passes, as long as they are included in the insured trip cost on your policy.

    Do NOT purchase Travelex Insurance! It is useless and a waste of money. I purchased the most expensive travel package they have. I had my dream vacation reservations is place and weeks later 737 Max jet was banned. Even with 737 Max ban, Travelex still did not cover me. What are they actually covering? What can be worst than the biggest scandal in aircraft industry? Third party agent I talked with said, they cover for mechanical issues and when I asked about 737 Max that was banned BECAUSE technical issues, he said he is now aware of this and never heard of it. Don't bother, trust me!

    On a recent trip to Italy I was sick overnight with a stomach bug. In the morning I learned that about 15 others in my group were also sick. Our tour guide told us we could go back to bed and try to travel on to Florence at our own expense. Gate 1 Travel arranged for a guide to help us navigate this journey on our own. I filed a claim with Travelex for my out of pocket expenses and 1 missed day of the tour. This was denied because Travelex has a clause that requires a doctor's visit before reimbursement. In a foreign country, in the middle of the night and half the group sick also. Other insurance companies have paid the claim for some of my tour group but not Travelex. Beware when you pick a travel company.

    First of all, I have to say that my wife and I have been insuring our one-way trips with Travelex for the past couple of years, but because we have never had to make a claim, we have no idea how efficient the company is. After a ridiculously lengthy, frustrating and stressful call yesterday, however, we will not be insuring with Travelex again.

    The reason is as follows: My wife and I will undertake a one-way trip (on a ship) in April 2020 and were going to insure this trip with Travelex as well. We make this trip a lot. Annoyingly, my telephone conversation with the representative yesterday turned into a marathon nightmare and I was forced to ask to speak to a supervisor. I should point out that the representative was not rude. I was simply getting nowhere with her. Unfortunately, although it seemed that the supervisor was able to solve the problem and issue a quote, I received a telephone call yesterday evening from the same supervisor telling me that we would probably have to place our April trip on an entirely separate policy that we had purchased back in October for a one-way trip we are going to make in early January 2020.

    I told the supervisor (again and again) that the two one-way trips (in January and April) were totally unrelated and needed to be treated as such, but she kept saying that the January trip must be regarded as out-bound and the April trip must be regarded as a return home and must therefore be placed on the same policy as the January trip. Regardless of how many times I explained that the two trip were unrelated and months apart, and that we wanted two separate policies so that we could add a 'Cancel for any reason' to the April trip, she said that this might not be possible and that we should hold off purchasing the policy until they had investigated the matter and got back to us. It goes without saying that we will not be dictated to. Yesterday evening, after the call from the supervisor, we chose an entirely different insurance provider for the April trip. We will keep our Travelex policy for the January trip, but this is the last time we will use Travelex.

    I wasted almost 3 hours of my life yesterday trying to arrange a policy for a one-way trip in April. What should have been a straightforward formality turned into a stressful marathon with Travelex more or less dictating that we must regard the April trip as a return trip and that we must add it to our January trip policy. I kept explaining that the two trips were unrelated and that the April trip might be cancelled at the last minute (hence our wish to have 'Cancel for any reason' added to the April policy). The January one-way trip was booked in August and the April one-way trip was booked last week. They are unconnected and unrelated. We had no idea until last week that we would even be making the trip in April (and it is still not 100% certain).

    This morning, I received a call from a representative at Travelex who proceeded to tell me (yet again) that Travelex regarded the April trip as a return trip and that we must add it to the January policy. As I said earlier, I will not be dictated to. I interrupted the representative before she was able to finish and told her that we had now chosen a different provider for the April trip. Case closed. Travelex has lost a customer.

    We had a cancelled flight from Athens to Chicago. We called the emergency help line and the person told us we were covered to go ahead and buy the replacement airline tickets to get home. After we returned home and filed a claim, a representative told us we were NOT covered. The airline cancelled the flight, we did not! We were in a foreign country with no reservations for a hotel or future flight home. So, we made a split second decision to buy last minute tickets home, which were very expensive!

    After returning home we were told it was not a trip cancellation, which is a play on words by this insurance company-- Making people believe they are covered for a cancelled flight and in reality they are NOT! We thought we would be covered for cancelled flights!! We didn't even need this insurance especially if it did not cover a cancelled flight! I am sharing our experiences with everyone I know. Needless to say, we will never use this insurance company again or First Choice Travel & Cruise In Waukesha, WI for selling me this product.

    According to the documentation submitted the reason the airline cancelled the flight was due to ‘crew timing out.’ We are happy to hear that the airline did offer a voucher for each of you due to the flight being cancelled.

    We had to cancel two trips in the last year, both to bad-timed sicknesses. We used two different travel insurance companies. The first took seven months and absolute mountains of paperwork to refund us just $550. They kept asking for the same papers, which I submitted multiple times. It was totally ridiculous! The company for the second canceled trip, Travelex Insurance, actually refunded us more than we originally requested.     Purchased a Travelex policy for a cruise this year. Unfortunately I had to cancel 1 day prior to departure due to medical advice from my daughter’s PCP. First step was to call Travelex to confirm coverage. While it was easy to make contact, they would not confirm that my circumstances fell within the scope of a valid claim. Representative spoke in general terms. I asked them to go ahead and begin a claim. I received an email shortly afterwords that explained the claim process.

    Initially the documentation requested seemed a bit overwhelming. My submitted claim was 14 pages including documentation from doctor, receipts, cruise documents etc. Travelex allows up to 1 year to submit this documentation. Once I gathered all documentation I scanned and emailed my claim on a Monday evening, I received an email on Friday that my claim had been accepted and would be paid. I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the quick turnaround! Honestly I expected a reply with a few hoops I needed to jump through to complete my claim.

    I have read many of the good and bad reviews concerning travel insurance. The common denominator in all reviews is due diligence or lack thereof. Folks that read policy documentation and have a general idea of what was covered and what was not seem to have more favorable reviews. I will certainly use Travelex for my future insurance needs. The policy was competitively priced with comprehensive coverage. Claim process was less tedious than expected and quick.

    This company is the worst insurance I have ever paid for!!! They are not understanding and just plain out scammed me out my money! Will not be working with them again and I will make sure to tell people not to pay for their horrible services! NEVER AGAIN! My brother passed away so I booked my ticket and the Travelex insurance plan so I can attend the funeral. The funeral ended up getting pushed back so I talked with customer service at Travelex and they assured me if I submitted all requiring documents that there would be no problems if I changed my flight a week later!

    I paid an extra $500 to change my flight. Submitted all documents once I got back and now they are telling me they can not give me my money back because the “incident” happened prior me buying the insurance plan???? The reason I bought my ticket and insurance was to attend my brothers funeral! My brother's death was not the incident. His funeral being pushed back was. But they seem to not understand. Why have people work in customer service if they don’t know anything about this company? This so called claims “specialist” would not let me talk to her manager or to anybody else either. The most unorganized company I have ever seen. Customer service told me one thing while a claim specialist told me another.

    Last month (March 2019) my wife and I began what was supposed to be a two-week vacation in Thailand. Two days after arriving in Bangkok, I was diagnosed with double pneumonia and was hospitalized there for 13 days. The physician required me to rest a few days after discharge before allowing us to fly back to the US. When we returned we filed a carefully documented trip interruption claim for about $10,000 with Travelex on April 9. (An arm of the insurance, On Call International, had already taken care of the hospital bill - quickly and completely, much to our amazement.)

    Travelex responded the very next day (!) with an email saying that we would receive a check covering nearly the entirety of our claim. (We are still waiting to hear about one small aspect of the claim.) We received that check today (April 16). Fortunately we have filed very few insurance claims of any kind over our 70+ years, but all of the others have involved initial denials of claims, seemingly unending hassles, etc., before we finally received compensation. This has been a truly extraordinary experience. We will definitely use Travelex for all of our future travel insurance needs.

    I have read much about insurance coverage provided by Travelex. Rave reviews regarding coverage for ‘families’. That may be true but coverage for this senior citizen was zip. Nowhere did I ever read some Travelex policies do not cover cancellation of a trip due to health issues. Kensington Travel/Tours sold me the insurance and never said anything about limitations. Imagine my surprise when a lung infection prevented me from taking my trip and Travelex informed me I was NOT COVERED for trip cancellation. Buyers, especially senior travelers, beware.

    We had to cancel the family vacation because my wife got sick, so we submitted the trip cancellation claim. I called to open the claim, but the same could have been done as easy via the website. Although, the documentation required to support the claim was a bit excessive IMO (like a statement from the airline that the ticket's fare was not refundable), we did not have major issues providing all required documents, including the doctor's note, of course. Once the documents were submitted, it took about 2-3 weeks to process the claim and we were able to check the processing status online and, finally, we got a check for the full amount without any issues or additional questions. I think it makes sense to invest some time and prepare all documents upfront - makes everything go smoother. Overall, I am very satisfied with the service received and plan to use Travelex for my future travels as well.

    Travelex offers two different policies for our travelers, the Travel Select and Travel Basic. While both will offer coverage worldwide, they have different benefit levels and upgrades. Some differences in the policies include being able insure trips that are longer than 30 days, or higher than $10,000 in trip cost, and higher medical coverage for medical emergencies that may arise while traveling. For these reasons, the Travel Select plan is normally recommended for travel outside of the United States, as it has higher benefit coverage amounts than the Travel Basic.

    The website does have a side-by-side comparison, so you can find the plan that best matches what you are looking for on your trip. For your convenience, both of our policies offer a 15 Day Free Look Period. This allows you to cancel or change the policy and receive a refund of your premium within 15 days of purchase, as long as you have not already departed on your trip or filed a claim.     We have contacted the Claims Administrator on your behalf to better understand the loss you were claiming related to trip delay /interruption of your trip. It is important to remember that, insurance is highly regulated and in order to confirm coverage, completed claim forms and documentation are an important part of the claim process in order to validate coverage as it relates to the specific conditions as listed in the plan purchased.

    The protection plan purchased is a Named Peril Policy, meaning the policy outlines the coverage included and if the reason for trip interruption is not listed, coverage does not apply. In the Description of Coverage, which was emailed to you at the time the policy was purchased, it explains the following Trip Delay and Trip Interruption benefits:

    If your Covered Trip is delayed for 5 hours or more, we will reimburse you up to the amount shown in the Schedule for reasonable additional expenses incurred by you for hotel accommodations, meals, telephone calls and local transportation while you are delayed. (Emphasis added)

    Trip Cancellation and Interruption Covered Reasons
    Coverage is provided for the following unforeseeable events or their consequences which occur while coverage is in effect under this Policy if there is a change in plans by you, a Family Member traveling with you, or Traveling Companion:

    3. Common Carrier delays resulting from inclement weather, or mechanical breakdown or organized labor strikes that affect public transportation; (Emphasis added)
    4. arrangements canceled by an airline, cruise line, motor coach company, or tour operator, resulting from inclement weather, mechanical breakdown or organized labor strikes that affect public transportation;

    Based on the information in the Description of Coverage, in order to be eligible for reimbursements under Trip Delay, the Claim Administrator would need documentation, such as receipts, showing that there were additional charges, such as meals, hotels, or transportation, because of the delay. In order to be eligible for Trip Interruption one of the 13 covered reasons, would have to be the cause of your interruption. Such as Common Carrier delay resulting from inclement weather, mechanical breakdown, or an organized labor strike that affects public transportation.

    The Travelex Travel Basic and Travel Select plans offer multiple benefits while you are traveling. This does include pre-departure benefits as well, such as Trip Cancellation.

    That being said, you do have the option of insuring the lowest trip cost band of $1 - $250, instead of insuring your entire trip cost. This allows you to have a lower insurance premium, while not changing the benefits available when traveling (with the exception of Trip Interruption which is based on 150% of your insured trip cost). However, by not insuring your full trip cost you may compromise the coverage under the Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion Waiver. One of the requirements for being eligible for the Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion Waiver, is that you are insuring all pre-paid, non-refundable components of your trip.

    If you would like to insure a lower trip cost, please contact our Customer Solutions Department at 1-800-228-9792, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 7:00 pm CST. They will be able to assist with the change and refund the premium difference, as long as you have no claim to file and have not departed on your trip.

    I shopped and compared 5 different policies online and got recommendations from 3 friends who all used different companies. Travelex stood out for the coverage, equivalent price, and the best part - my phone call to Customer Service. You see, I read the policy and had questions. When I called, Kathy answered every question I had, clearly and understandably. My focal areas were trip delay, bicycle touring and pre-existing conditions.     It is still too early to give an appropriate appraisal. I bought Travelex for the first time for essentially three reasons: 1.) I had a loss which my previous insurance company said that they probably would not cover (it is not clear that Travelex would have covered it either). This prompted me to start shopping for other companies. 2.) The total cost was less for the same or better coverage with my previous company, and 3.) the insurance is primary. Most other travel insurances are secondary. Many other companies also have poor consumer evaluations. I have passed all of this information on to my step-son, who I presume is also going to buy a Travelex policy.

    Purchased this insurance as part of the requirement for getting my French visa. My insurance was not accepted as it doesn't clearly state coverage area and the fact that it covers entire Schengen area. I ended up purchasing a different insurance and requested to refund me for this one. Not sure if the request will be granted.

    Travelex’ policies offer coverage for travel anywhere in the world, unless it is an Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) Destination (Iran, Crimea Region of Ukraine, Libya, North Korea, and Syria).

    However, in order to obtain a Visa, the Consulate generally requests a letter that confirms the coverage purchased on company letterhead, from the travel insurance company. In the future, a letter can be requested from Travelex by email at customersolutions@travelexinsurance.com or phone, and sent back to the traveler via email, within 24 hours.

    We have cancelled your policy and the premium has been refunded in full back to the card used to purchase the policy. This refund should be reflected on your statement within the next 5 – 7 business days, depending on your banking institution.

    We always purchased travel insurance when we travel. During last several years we were purchased Travelex travel insurance and feel like we have a good protection for our trips. Never had problem before. This year we travel to Canada and our connection flight at Toronto was canceled. We were staying in line to reach customer service for more than 4 hr!!! Air Canada proivided new tickets for flight for next day and arrange hotel. We reached hotel after midnight and were very tired. Next day we flew home, but my wife missed working day. We contact Travelex and send them all info. Also sent them proof from Air Canada for canceled flight. We did not get single penny from Travelex insurance. So why we need this insurance???

    We have contacted the Claim Administrator, on your behalf, and have been advised that, to date, there has been no documentation submitted for any out of pocket expenses that were incurred because of the trip delay or trip interruption.

    In the Description of Coverage, which was provided to you on Gate 1 Travel’s online portal, it explains the following Trip Delay and Trip Interruption Benefits:

    Trip Delay Benefits

    If your Covered Trip is delayed for 8 hours or more, we will reimburse you up to the amount shown in the Schedule for reasonable additional expenses incurred by you for hotel accommodations, meals, telephone calls and local transportation while you are delayed.

    Post-Departure Trip Interruption Benefits

    If you are unable to continue your Covered Trip for one of the Covered Reasons, we will reimburse you, less any refund paid or payable, for unused travel arrangements (…)

    Based on the information you submitted to the Claim Administrator, to be eligible for reimbursements under Trip Delay, they would need documentation, such as receipts, showing you incurred additional expenses, such as meals or local transportation, because of the delay.

    Arrangements being cancelled by an airline is a covered reason under the Trip Interruption benefit, however in this situation the airline provided overnight accommodations and the return flight home. Therefore there was no unused travel arrangements that needed to be reimbursed, and you did not incur any additional transportation costs.

    We trust that you understand the Claim Administrator’s decision is based on the terms and conditions of the policy and the available information. If this information is incomplete or inaccurate, please feel free to submit any additional information to the Claims Administrator and they will gladly reevaluate your claim.

    Luckily, I didn't have to make a claim. So, I can't comment on that aspect. I signed up for this insurance on my phone while waiting at the gate for my plane. I did complete it, but found the site hard to navigate and to fill out the forms. For example, it wouldn't let me set the date I was leaving, so I had to pick the next day. Some of the form buttons didn't work correctly. The site isn't very optimized for phones. I'm on Android using Chrome if that makes a difference.

    After researching several travel insurance providers, I decided on Travelex primarily because the emergency medical coverage is better and the policy provides "primary" coverage (i.e., no waiting for my personal medical insurer to reimburse me first), which is a BIG plus. I was also drawn to Travelex because the coverage has a shorter time frame before coverage is triggered (e.g., lost luggage, travel delay and the "look back" period).
