Our editors’ take

Squaremouth is a good travel insurance option for comparing multiple providers and policies at once. By entering your trip information, you can easily compare a list of quotes from reputable providers in real time, including price, coverage benefits and limits.

However, Squaremouth doesn’t write policies. Its customer service is limited and if there are any issues with policy or coverage, you’ll have to reach out to the policy underwriter directly. If you prefer to purchase travel insurance directly from a provider, you might want to consider another company.

Squaremouth travel insurance policies

When visiting Squaremouth, you can compare different types of policies from its partner companies including:

  • Standard single-trip policies
  • Annual or multi-trip policies
  • Cruise insurance policies
  • Adventure and sports policies

Limits, exclusions and fees vary from company to company. When you use Squaremouth’s comparison tool, you can pin companies head to head on their coverages to find the one that’s best for your travel plans.

Single-trip policies

For most travelers, a single-trip policy is the right choice. It typically covers trip cancellation, emergency medical coverage and evacuation, travel delays and trip interruptions for a set period of time. For the most protection, get a Cancel for Any Reason policy.

Annual or multi-trip policies

If you’re planning multiple trips in a year or taking an annual vacation to Bora Bora, you can save time and money by purchasing your policies in bulk. This coverage is similar to single-trip policies but typically doesn’t include trip cancellation or interruption coverage.

Cruise insurance policies

A traditional travel insurance policy won’t cover the things that may be important to you while on a cruise, like pre-departure cancellation coverage and higher medical and evacuation benefits coverage. With a cruise insurance policy, you can insure the cost of the cruise and trip, plus any prepaid and non-refundable expenses, like excursions or beverage packages.

Adventure and sports policies

For travelers who live a little on the wild side, Squaremouth offers tailored sports and adventure coverage. Traditional policies often exclude coverage for more dangerous activities like skydiving or participating in competitive sports. Adventure and sports coverage offers things like winter sports medical insurance, reimbursement for sports-related trip payments, coverage for injuries sustained during competitive, organized sports and activities and more.

Squaremouth riders

In the world of insurance, a rider is simply a type of add-on to the policy. They’re optional forms of coverage that come at an additional cost.

With Squaremouth, rider availability varies by company. Some may offer all on this list, while others offer just one or none at all. A few examples of common riders available through Squaremouth’s partners include:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Cancel for any reason
  • Extension of coverage
  • Medical or non-medical evacuation
  • Baggage delay
  • Missed connection
  • Travel delay
  • Accidental death
  • Sports fees
  • Sports equipment delay
  • Rental car damage
  • Identity theft

Squaremouth policy cost

Squaremouth’s prices vary greatly from company to company and trip to trip. In 2023, Squaremouth customers paid an average cost of $283 for coverage. The average for comprehensive travel insurance policies was $403, while medical-only plans averaged $96.

Comprehensive policies typically cost between 5% and 10% of the total insured cost.

These prices reflect the plan only, as Squaremouth does not charge any additional fees for its services. If you get riders or cancel your policy, you may have to pay additional fees based on the provider’s pricing.

How to get a Squaremouth policy?

After comparing your options on the Squaremouth site and finding the one you want to purchase, you’ll simply click “Buy Now” to go through the buying process. Depending on the company, you may have to purchase the policy within 14 days of booking your trip to get some of the benefits, like trip cancellation coverage.

Because this can vary by company, Squaremouth recommends buying travel insurance as soon as possible not to miss any of the benefits.

How does Squaremouth compare?

Squaremouth offers a simple, streamlined approach to comparing policies from multiple providers. Its competitor Tripinsurance.com also allows customers to compare their options, but the site is a bit more difficult to navigate and there are fewer resources available for customers to review.

Both offer the ability to compare multiple policies, but Tripinsurance.com only partners with a few companies compared to the more than 20 that partner with Squaremouth. Tripinsurance.com does make it easier to directly compare policies, offering a side-by-side comparison of the quote’s price, benefits and coverage. Plus, its team offers help with policy claims, which Squaremouth does not.

With Squaremouth, you have to select which policies you want to compare side-by-side, but once you do that, it’s easier to navigate and compare options.

Short review: IMG doesn't give clear explanations and takes forever to get back to you. Squaremouth initially talks a good game but in the end wouldn't even respond anymore to our queries. We will not be using either company for future travel insurance.

Long review: My wife and I are frequent travelers and routinely take out travel insurance for our trips. I have used squaremouth.com for several years and it identified IMG iTravelInsured as our best option for several trips. Of course, you don't know if your insurance is any good until you actually need it... That takes us to a cruise from NJ to Iceland in Aug'22. My wife got COVID the last day of the cruise. So we were confined to our cabin and ushered off individually. (Celebrity Cruises was great in the way they handled it, by the way.) Since we couldn't fly home as scheduled, we had to stay in Iceland for a few days until we could get a new flight home. When we called the airlines they said the next flight with 2 open economy seats was 10 days out. So we booked biz class seats that were only 5 days out. We called IMG to verify we could do that and they said yes since it would save the food and lodging expenses for the extra days.

We filed a claim in Sep '22 with IMG iTravelInsured. We were asking for reimbursement for the additional biz class airfare, the extra days in Iceland, and two days of hotels back in the states that we had to cancel. In May '23, IMG reimbursed us for the 2 nights of hotels in the states. They reimbursed us for 1/2 of the hotel/food expenses in Iceland because only 1 of us had medical proof of COVID. They didn't reimburse us at all for the biz class tickets because we couldn't prove that no open flights existed with 2 economy seats available for 10 days. It didn't matter that we had called and gotten approval. We contacted Squaremouth.com since they have a "zero complaints" policy. At first they seemed very helpful and got IMG to reassess our claim. (There was no change in their assessment.) But Squaremouth went unresponsive and we haven't received answers to our queries for a couple months now.
