I purchased protection for a flight and had an severe illness just beforehand. A family member had also tested positive for Covid-19 so I had to cancel beforehand. They considered me as “not having an illness” (their words) because I wasn’t hospitalized, and refused to reimburse me for my flight. I’ll never use this again, and would recommend others don’t as well.

I presently have three pending claims with AIG Travel Guard. Two are from a trip in May, 2022 for a relatively small medical claim and the other for delayed baggage. This is being written in January, 2023. AIG sends repeated requests for documentation, including demands for documents that are not listed in the policy—or even exist. They send an e-mail like clockwork every month saying that they need more time to review my claim. I have a much larger claim for trip interruption and medical expenses from an accident in Vietnam in November, 2022.
I have submitted the documentation three times, using their checklist to make sure I had it all. Their web site shows only half of the documentation as received. Two phone agents have assured me that the documentation has been received, and my adjuster will soon review the file. Today, I got three identical e-Mails informing me that I am a valued customer, but more time is needed to review my claims. AIG Travel Guard is a scam. I am planning a trip to Egypt and Jordan in November, and will be insuring with an insurer with higher premiums, but paid promptly when I was hospitalized in China in 2019. AIG is a rip off.

Travel Guard insurance under the umbrellas of AIG is a scam. They will not reimburse your travel expenses. They will not communicate outside auto emails sent. After filing a claim Oct 31st 2022 and waiting until Jan 5th 2023 I was forced to go to BBB. I have over 30 emails sent and over 42 phone calls on record attempting to communicate. DO NOT purchase insurance with them. They WILL NOT communicate or reimburse.

It amazes me that Travel Guard Group Insurance of AIG has an A+ rating with the Wisconsin BBB after reading many bad reviews and filing a claim with Travel Guard. Below is the final complaint I filed with my state Insurance Commissioner:
This complaint is not only about the claim filed and payments received, but from the delay handling the claim, the poor communication and service provided, and having to appeal and to file a complaint with the Wisconsin BBB before we started a getting a resolution to our claim. We have been buying travel insurance with Travel Guard Insurance for years and this was the first time we have had to file a claim. As a result of filing this claim we will never purchase insurance through this company or recommend it to anyone.
We paid $1,054.12 for a policy to cover a twelve day period from June 17 through June 29, 2022 that included a 10 day cruise from June 19 through June 29. The estimated trip cost was $7,000 ($3,500 for each insured) which included $6,306 for the cruise. On June 17 we tested positive for COVID and had to be quarantined for five days. The cruise was cancelled for us and we could not return home for 10 days after catching COVID due to Delta Airlines policy on COVID. During that 10 day period we incurred a hotel expense of $3,614.81 and numerous other expenses while quarantined and being delayed to return home.
After returning home and settling down we filed a claim. Since we had incurred numerous expenses and there was nothing in the policy to cover COVID expenses except for quarantining, we needed help on what was needed for our claim. After an adjuster called us at our request, we submitted the claim with several folders of information in August.
The claim web site to check the status of the claim was never updated and said it was under review. It stated the documents I sent was “Outstanding” indicating to me that they needed more information; however, when I called they said they had received what they needed The claim was delayed and under review from August until November 30 when it was suddenly closed and a check was sent for $1,600 covered under the “Delay” coverage. I received no call or email before it was closed but did get an email from the adjuster on 12/1/22 stating that they had printed a payment and to look at the claim status. At that time no call or anything was provided about how it was closed. I immediately filed an appeal to Travel Guard and when they did not respond I filed a complaint with the Wisconsin BBB. Soon after that I started getting some results from Travel Guard.
They closed out the claim at $1,600 and had failed to get the cruise credits refunded and look at some flight change charges. Between my appeal and the Wisconsin BBB complaint I was finally able to get them to refund my cruise credits and some flight change charges for a total of $9,020.80. I still feel they owe us around $1,480 since the trip was interrupted and policy should have paid out 150% of my trip cost. The adjuster said I would lose if I challenged this since the policy does not cover hotel expenses we incurred during out trip and that I might loose the $1,600 they had paid. I decided at that point to let it go but I told them I would be filing an insurance complaint with my state Insurance Commissioner. I feel most people would not have challenged the claim at $1,600 like I have done. I am hoping this complaint will get back to Travel Guard so they can see what kind of service they are providing.

I have purchased a trip cancellation insurance with Travel Guard Canada just in case something goes wrong and I won't be able to travel. My flight was booked on November 1st and I happened to badly twist my ankle on October 29. I submitted trip cancellation request the very next day including travel policy number and all other related information. I have received a response that the review will take 10-14 days. A MONTH LATER I finally got a reply with request for more forms and paperwork.
-> The company is requesting more documentation to further SLOW DOWN refund process for a simple cancellation case.
-> The company is RETAINING MY MONEY and gaining an investment interest on it.
-> One would expect that the company is operating with customers' interest in mind but it doesn't seem to be the case.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND this insurance company for anyone who is planning to insure their trip for unexpected cancellations.

Booked a tour of Italy for May 2023 1 year in advance, purchased trip insurance thru Travel Guard at the same time in May 2022. In September, the tour company informs me of significant additional charges for traveling solo (over 2K more). I cancel the tour, get refunded most of the prepayment. I call to cancel the trip insurance and I’m informed I had To cancel within 15 days of the effective date of the policy. The trip is scheduled a year out, and a lot can happen during that time, what kind of unfair business practice only allows 15 days to get a refund? This insurance is a scam, do not purchase.

My 19-year-old daughter who has an intellectual disability saved up her money from her job to fly to Florida and visit her cousin. Five days before the flight, her cousin was diagnosed with a malignant spinal cord neoplasm. Needless to say, my daughter wasn't able to go on her trip bc she had no one she could stay with. While I am not usually one who purchases travel insurance, I encouraged my daughter to just in case (it was only about $20 and she had worked so hard to save that money, you know?!). We sent in the medical documentation showing that it was a real diagnosis yet AIG is denying her claim. So now she is out not only the money she paid for her checked bag each way but also the seat reservation fee (since she was flying alone, having picked the seats helped her have less anxiety). If there was an option, I would upload both the email that AIG sent to us and my response back to them which I emailed shortly before writing this post.

We insured a trip to Africa with this poor excuse of a company. Our daughter, who was living with us temporarily prior to a move, was diagnosed with cancer. The treating physician indicated that it was likely she would need chemotherapy after surgery. As the hospital is over a 90 minute drive from our home and the proposed therapy would be taking place while we were supposed to be on vacation, we obviously needed to cancel the trip and be available to take our daughter to any medical appointments. We advised AIG of the cancellation and provided all needed documents requested.
We are now over 3 months with no indication of any decision other than return emails that they have requested more information from the treating physician which is not true as we have spoken to him. I am also a physical and sent a very clear medical review of the situation. These pathetic charlatans continue to not honor the contract and return our funds. As there are literally dozens of travel insurance companies, I would advise utilizing any other one on the market rather than this dishonest entity.

This is a scam - they evade paying legitimate claims. Our flight was cancelled to start trip delaying our vacation by over a day. They refused to give us compensation for that. There was 1 hour and 50 minutes to make our connection, but their loophole was that the trip needed to allow 2 hours for a connection. If that is the case - why did they agree to insure the trip? They knew what the connections were when they took (stole) our money. Scam. Do not buy.

AIG took weeks to respond to our claim, and then denied the claim. Upon returning home, I immediately gathered all necessary required documentation including train ticket receipt/ airline tickets/ clothing receipts/ AIG proof of insurance and started my claim. It is now Aug. 23, 2022 and as of yet I have not received any compensation for this claim.
AIG is now requesting proof that I submitted this claim to my private home owners insurance and will reconsider my claim with them based on their outcome after my deductible has been met with my private insurance. I actively recommend against the use of any services provided by AIG Travel Guard or AIG in general. I booked round trip tickets from Newark, NJ to Manchester, UK in June. Tickets were booked through United Airlines but flights were provided by Air Canada. The trip had a single layover/transfer in Toronto each way. I experienced endless delays on the way there but still arrived 4 hours after the originally planned arrival time.
On the way home, Air Canada took an extra 2 hours to depart Manchester, which resulted in them forcibly changing my connecting flight from Toronto to Newark to a different flight the next day. Air Canada did not provide any form of reimbursement for any of the unanticipated expenses I incurred as a result. All they did was print out two meal vouchers.
I had to reserve a hotel at the last minute for the night in Toronto, pay for a taxi back to the airport the next morning (shuttle wasn't running), pay an extra day of parking (at a premium) for my car parked in long term in Newark, NJ, missed a day of work (lost wages), and missed several important meetings. I filed my claim with AIG Travel Guard, providing all details of the issues on the trip, and including all receipts for the expenses I incurred as a result. 13 days later I received an automated email from AIG stating: "We are pleased to let you know that we have printed your payment". There was no other contact from AIG during this time.
I was able to check the status of the claim using their site and my details to find that it had been closed by the adjuster and a check for a measly $100 was printed. The price I paid for the policy was almost as much as the sorry sum they tried to reimburse me for. My direct expenses as a result of the trip disruption were over $300. Absolutely do not waste your money on anything from AIG. Purchase travel insurance from a company that will actually reimburse you if you end up getting into a jam on a trip.

Very disappointed! Travel Guard should be ashamed of their business actions. They clearly place their own greed above doing the right thing. 1.3 billion profit in Q4 of 2021 and they can't spare giving me my money back for a SERVICE NOT RENDERED. If you actually look at their policy payout and all the limitations in the policy, you'll see that they're basically just TAKING your money. Wish I read all 44 pages first.
NEVER BUY THEIR PRODUCT. You won't actually get anything from it because they have exceptions for nearly everything. And if you do successfully file a claim, you most likely won't get anything near what you already paid out, and they might even tell you that you owe them more. Just read, it's all in their policy. I'll never do business with this company again. Insurance companies are the bane of humanity.

AIG Travel Guard will not refund your premiums (after the date listed on your policy, which is 15 days after booking) even if the flight cancellation is due to the airline, and not you, cancelling your flight(s) or changing your flight dates, making it not possible to go on the trip. It does not address this situation at all in the policy, so uses the blanket cancellation date. Even though the change is through no fault of your own. Read the fine print for the policy you are purchasing if it is not specifically outlined in their policy, it is not covered.

For a recent trip to Europe we paid $1200.00 for a policy that we believed covered illness, etc. We were also told it would cover lost baggage. It doesn't. After 2 months of back and forth, we were told to use our homeowners insurance, which, of course had a higher deductible than the value of our items in our bag. We trusted our travel agency who sold us this policy. They should have mentioned this little caveat. We trusted Travel Guard. In both cases, this trust was misplaced. After a claim is filed the actual terms of the policy are revealed. In this case they were requiring a doctors’ visit and report for the claim I submitted. Hours of waiting on the phone to get ahold of an agent and every agent is transferring me to another one, which leads only to more hours on the phone waiting...if I don't get simply cut off. I will never ever buy anything from AIG / Travel Guard again and strongly advise anybody to review their options before doing so. Tony

Bought insurance for son's summer travel. On return home, his flights were either canceled or delayed. So severely that he was stuck in Chicago overnight (without any help from the airlines for a hotel voucher), and had to pay for his own meals and transportation to and from hotel/airport. My policy clearly states coverage is at 100% for delays or cancellations. I submitted all requested documents and screenshots of the airline notices pertaining to cancellations and delays and I'm STILL fighting to get answers from this insurance company about my refund. Travel was in August! Save your $ because this is a ripoff and you won't be protected anyway.

AIG makes it VERY easy to sign up for the insurance, but such a hassle to actually file a claim that I ended up going to the hotel and airline direct and getting room refunded and flight credited. When trying to file my claim they ask for all kinds of proof of bad weather. They ask you to upload that proof with all kinds of other information. Are they serious!!! It was a major hurricane that hit Louisiana during the time I was scheduled to travel. I ended up with a travel voucher from the airline which I could have received without the insurance. The insurance leads you to believe that illness of a family member not involved in your flight can be a reason to cancel flight. To provide detailed medical/health information is required to file a claim and that is against patient privacy concerns. With the push of a key you can purchase this insurance but trying to file a claim is a major under-taking. I sincerely recommend that you contact the airline about their cancellation policy before buying this insurance.

I tried multiple times on multiple numbers, each time holding between 30 minutes and 1 hour. No one ever answered the phone. Finally, on 8/8, I called the emergency number and someone did answer but they could not be of assistance. I emailed them at that time and although it was past the 15 days examination period, I wanted my money back. I could not imagine needing that insurance while I was out of the country and no one will answer the phone.
On 8/22/21, they finally responded by email stating that they would not give refund only a voucher for further travel as it was not within their 15 day policy. I'm not sure if I will use it as I would never feel comfortable leaving the country with that insurance. The auto reply said someone will get back to me in 10-15 days. I am hoping that Costco will consider referring to a more reputable company so future customers don't run into this problem.

When something came up and I had to cancel my trip due to medical reasons I filed a claim online. I called them later that week. Waited on hold for over an hour, when someone finally did answer the phone they asked for all of my information and before I could even ask I single question related to my claim they hung up.
A few days later I received a very generic email saying my claim was denied because "there is no coverage under the claim presented". There was no reference document with examples of what is covered and what is not or explanation as to why it was not covered. I remember while reading their policy that medical reasons for needing to cancel was valid and within their terms of coverage and entitled to a refund. I reached out to my travel provider and they were able to return my money with no help from AIG.
Dealing with these people has been a nightmare. They can make up any excuse to deny you coverage and provide no supporting evidence that your situation is not part of their policy. I'm writing to alert fellow travelers to read the fine print if purchasing travel insurance through Travel Guard, the travel insurance used by Expedia. Typically, purchasing this insurance is easy, having a claim approved is another matter. My wife had a passport issue which prevented us from traveling and due to bad advice from Expedia agents, canceled the trip 24 hours too late and were not allowed a refund from the hotel.
We did receive flight credits from the airline. We were advised to file a claim with Travel Guard which was subsequently rejected for the reason that passport problems were not covered. Ok, sure, I get it, getting a refund was a long shot, but I imagine filing a claim for any of the 'covered' events would prove to be a challenge as well and seems to be a common complaint in the reviews I've read. As I stated above, Expedia makes it very easy to purchase the insurance and gives the buyer the impression that they have trip cancellation coverage. Not so in many cases.

UNETHICAL AIG INSURANCE: I want to post this as a WARNING to those seeking to fly. Be cautious if you use flight insurance. AIG Insurance, a part of Travel Guard, is a deceptive company that cares nothing for its clients. A few months ago I had purchased flight insurance through Expedia. AIG Insurance was that company. I knew there was a chance that I would not be able to make the trip so I bought the insurance for such a situation. When I could not make the trip, the insurance company requested reasoning and evidence for why I could not make this flight. It was supplied. They returned with nothing but excuses. I countered back and received only attempts to justify their malicious practices.
I would tell anyone flying that it would be better to not purchase any flight insurance at all than to purchase it from AIG Insurance or Travel Guard. I am also posting to the Better Business Bureau one among a large number of other complaints against the company. This is a warning to never utilize this company. They will fine print everything so they will have to pay nothing.
* According to the print at the bottom of their e-mail, AIG Insurance and Travel Guard are also affiliated with AON Affinity I Travel Practice and also the National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, PA. I would switch companies if that was my fire insurance company. You definitely would want payment over excuses in that type of tragic event.
* This is not against all insurance companies. I have dealt with some great ones from Auto Owners with my rental insurance, Progressive with my car insurance, and, as a teenager, State Farm in Delaware with my car insurance. There are good ones out there. AIG and Travel Guard are not among them. #AIGinsurance, #Travelguard #FlightInsurance

I used my first voucher on a local trip. The voucher was worth $300, but I only needed $100 coverage. You cannot get credit for any unused portion of the voucher. Of course, because we were symptom free, we could have gone and risked exposing everyone there, but we decided to do the right thing and cancel the trip.
After getting no help from the resort, I sent the appropriate paperwork to AIG for processing. Today I received a letter telling me that they cannot cover me because Covid quarantine is a "foreseeable" event and they only cover "unforeseen circumstances." SERIOUSLY? SO basically anyone with Covid will never be covered for any reason because clearly Covid is foreseeable? I find this absolutely repulsive and pretty much a suggestion that anyone with Covid should just go ahead and travel so you don't lose the money you paid. Our trip (four persons total) was in early March and was cut short due to the death of my mother.
I filed the claim in April. It is now November 11. I have been asked for additional information via email and have sent everything I have that documents our trip, including (for no reason that I can ascertain) the itinerary of our entire trip. I am of course NOT claiming insurance for the part of the trip that was completed - just the well documented AirBnB accommodations and prepaid fishing charters with transports that had to be cancelled. Thank goodness I had insured the air travel with a different company. In the past four weeks, I have been told three times that my case has been "expedited."
On the most recent call the agent stated that she would call me back the next day. I have received no phone calls - ever. On the claims information webpage for my claim, the name of my insurance adjuster has changed three times, and it continues to report that there are documents yet to be filed, despite an agent telling me recently that all documents are in and "maybe my adjuster just hasn't gotten to updating the website information." After reading the other reviews I am not sure that continuing to call is going to get me anywhere. This was not inexpensive insurance. I am very patient but this treatment is unconscionable.

If you are thinking of buying insurance for your travel plans really consider it before you use AIG Travel Guard. VERY LONG (7 month and counting) story short, they are the most unresponsive and careless company I have ever dealt with. Below is a shortened version, because you'd need a whole bottle of wine for the long version, of how our experience with them has been so far.
Yes, COVID is slowing everyone down, but COVID has had nothing to do with the service we are receiving. After 5 months of fighting for our refund, they sent to refund check to the wrong address. To an address that doesn't even exist. It was a hybrid address of where we live now (Japan) and where we were living when we bought the plan (Florida.) After calling and confirming the correct address multiple times, they sent it to the wrong one AGAIN. That's twice it was sent to the wrong address. We then called and requested a wire transfer instead since they couldn't manage to get the address correct.
Many things weren't done that were supposed to be done on the company's end to get this wire transfer going, and we are still waiting for a wire transfer a month after requesting it. We call almost every day to make sure things are done correctly, and even then simple tasks such as putting in a check cancellation request are not done until the 4th or 5th phone call asking for it.
You are not allowed speak to an actual agent or to someone who knows what is going on, even through email. You can only speak to a customer service phone agent who knows nothing about the process and has no power over the process. We have done everything we can think of to talk to someone who can do something from posting on their Facebook page to handwriting a letter and mailing it and come up empty handed each time. We reported them to the Better Business Bureau 3 weeks ago and they still haven't responded to their efforts to talk to someone either.

My daughter had died due medical malpractice. My husband and I had been embroiled in a lawsuit over her death and all but one company had settled out of court. I was absolutely sick to my stomach over the situation as the decision to sue was not made lightly. We had elected not to go to trial with the remaining company thinking that a month long trial by jury would be agonizing. My husband was sent to California on a work trip and purchased a ticket for me to go with him to try to get away from it all for a time. He purchased AIG travel insurance for my ticket just in case.
I sent in a video to my lawyers that I asked to be played to the doctor that wrote her test results wrong in the computer. In it I explained that we would never have sued if they would have said they were sorry and implemented a policy change for reviewing test results. Instead when I discovered the mistake by accident they refused to speak with me and lawyered up. My lawyers were against going to trial as the insurance company of the defense had deep pockets and were notorious for never giving up to the point of burying the prosecution with multiple paid experts and making people look horrible on the stand and they didn't want us to go through that.
When they watched my video they asked me to go to trial understanding that we would probably lose but we would hit them hard financially with the defense and hopefully make it so that in the future they would put a new policy in place to hopefully never have this happen to another family. The trial was set during the same time as the trip to California. Both my husband and myself obviously were not able to make the trip because we were on the stand testifying in the case. His work cancelled his trip and was reimbursed for it. My claim was denied because I was not actually subpoenaed for court. My lawyers spoke with AIG and explained that while there was no actual subpoena, I had to be present in court as it was my own court case. They explained that It was over the death of my new born child.
AIG did not care and denied my claim and then denied it again when my lawyers (who are amazing people and did this at no charge because they thought it was so crappy for this company to do this to us) brought it to a supervisor's attention. So not only did I have to endure a reliving of the worse moments of my life but I also got to deal with these crooks. The policy states, "d) the Insured or Traveling Companion (or, if the Insured is a Child, the Insured’s parent or legal guardian), is involuntarily terminated or laid off from their employment. The termination notice must occur at least 30 days after the Insured’s effective date of coverage. The employee must have been an active employee with the same employer for at least 1 year. This provision is not applicable to temporary employment, seasonal employment, independent contractors or self-employed persons;"
I purchased my flight on February 29, 2020 and was laid off March 22, 2020. Now they have denied it and stated because my letter states that I had the flu the weeks prior to the lay off then I need to get medical certification from the doctor. This company is full of it. I asked do y'all really expect people to travel during a pandemic? Especially someone like me with a chunk missing off my lungs from a prior surgery. He repeats, "Ma'am we just don't cover COVID." We planned a beach vacation, rented a house at Oak Island, NC. A hurricane hit the area several weeks before the start of our vacation. Due to the damaged roads etc., the local government closed area, only emergency personnel/construction was allowed in. We were told by the rental agency to file a claim. We filed a claim on 8/19. After two/three weeks we called to check on the status. We were told it will take six-eight weeks maybe longer. Apparently, you can't talk to the person processing your claim or a manager. The person answering the 800 number is the only person you can talk to and they only see what’s on the screen in front of them. It's very frustrating, sitting and waiting for the claim to be paid. No one cares at Travel Guard. I'm very disappointed with their services and will never get insurance from them in the future.

So I made a claim with Travel Guard on 5/9/20. I was supposed to travel on 8/30/20, I called multiple times to Travel Guard and they kept saying my claim is under review. I booked a flight from the US to Italy through a travel agency and the flight was canceled in March 2020 because of the pandemic. I insured the flight with AIG travel. Here's my complaints:
- It took forever to have a reimbursement that was going to cover only what was the commission fee for reimbursement from the travel agency. It's understandable that the process would take longer given the difficult and unusual circumstances, but almost six months is too long.
- I had to keep calling and sending e-mails in order to expedite the process. My claims adjuster hasn't been very helpful given that they kept replying with automated e-mails I couldn't reply to. If I had to ask for clarifications I had to call the agency, which wasn't always reachable.
- The only way to have a reimbursement is through a check: for some reason they can't wire you the money, which is more convenient.
- Given that it is not possible to have the money wired, I needed to have the check sent to Italy, but they first told me they can't send it internationally, then they said they can, then they can't, and then they can and I finally received it.
In general, I was under the impression that AIG does anything in their power to make the customer give up on their claim, even if their request has been granted.

I purchased this travel insurance through Expedia and apparently Travelguard is not actually AIG, as they outsource the processing of claims to another company called AON Affinity. This is something I only found out after 4 months. Calling AIG directly is no help as they have no access to these claims. Even though the claims are not being processed by AIG, I would still never do business with them based on them partnering with AON. I opened two claims for hotels in Italy back in April that had to be canceled due to the corona virus. They are essentially the exact same claims, but just for different dates.
A few weeks later one of the claims was denied, which at the time I was told was due to NYS regulations on the travel date being too far in the future, however they never explained why only one was denied (I have also since learned that this was a lie). I was told to resubmit within a 60 day window, but upon resubmitting I was told by another agent that I should not have done that. After extensive phone calls from me, I was able to get one of the claims approved, however the second larger is still pending.
I have called multiple times, and spoken to many "supervisors", although was told by other agents that those people were not supervisors. Most of the time I either get hung up on, or left on hold for over an hour. I have been told countless times that someone would get back to me in 24-48 hours, but have never had any contact from anyone. I have kept detailed notes on every interaction with this company, who I spoke with and what was said, and sent them a detailed email with this timeline, with no response. I have now sent 9 email complaints, and still no response. I now also filed a formal complaint with NYS Department of Financial Services and will be posting on every review site I can find.

At the 5th Month I reminding them that that this was cancelled because of emergency major surgery and that this has caused undue stress in having this claim go through. That is when they finally called me instead of me calling them. 5 MONTHS!!! It amazes me they have high rated reviews on other websites.
Their process for filing a claim and processing it is terrible. It could be streamlined by having one agent call and explain exactly what is needed and stay with you as you do it. Instead there was many calls initiated by me, follow up emails by them asking for more and more and more. I am not sure how many times I told them and emailed them it was just the deposit, there was no flight, No Hotel. They were asking for Hotel and Airline Info in many emails.. THERE WAS NONE! My friends and I purchased tickets to Ethiopia from Zambia as a vacation trip, we were Peace Corps volunteer at the time. I was the only one who bought insurance through AIG Travel Guard. We got evacuated due to the current COVID19 pandemic and my friends said that I was so lucky I purchased travel insurance. Well, I wasn't. I arrived back in the U.S on 3/20/2020 and filed my claim on 4/27/2020. At the same time Expedia had given me a refunded amount of the ticket cost, but only to be used with that specific airline that operates only on the African continent. I explained this many times on the phone with AIG that I thought the insurance was to protect my trip cancellation and not to issue me a refund that I will never be able to use. On top of that, it is only good for 2 years and given the current climate, travel from the U.S to Africa and then around Africa will not be happening any time soon.
AIG denied my claim, told me to file an appeal, that there was no appeal department that I could speak with. All I can do is mail my appeal and wait to hear back. It is July 16th, haven't heard anything and there is no number to call for appeals. I am extremely disappointing that the insurance did not do what it said it would. The money is needed now more than ever, I am lucky that it wasn't a significant amount, but for those thinking about purchasing pricey tickets, I would strongly suggest utilizing a different travel insurance!

Travel Guard likes to use the excuse that we received a credit from United. A travel credit is not the same as getting the full cost of the airline ticket back in the form of cash/check. I explained this to a customer service agent a few weeks ago, she notified me that there is a form (Flight Authorization Form) to complete to get money back instead of a travel credit for future travel.

Paid for travel insurance but my parents who are 85 and 93. Covid-19 prevented their ability to travel. Travel Guard has been horrible throughout this experience. Here it is now two months and I have not gotten a direct answer. I have filled out all the paperwork at the wedding on a phone countless times the countless hours. I contacted individual today and was told I should be receiving an email as my claim form was not executed. I asked them to check it and they responded acknowledging it wasn't fact in their file. I asked for my refund. They then told me that Expedia, the travel agent was reviewing the claim. Expedia, after an hour wait on their phone, told me I must file for a refund with American Airlines first. American Airlines stated that I needed to talk to Expedia or travel guard.
Now here it is, 2 months later, and after all the phone calls and waiting on the line getting switched from one company to the next to the next, I find myself waiting on a rejection from American so I can go back to Expedia and show them I have no refund, so they can they can "complete" their review, and send me back the travel guard who took my money yet will not address the situation.
I'm a former prosecuting attorney and I have a ph.d where I did my dissertation on fraud. The difuse accountability structure exhibited here is worse than any fraudulent organization I have ever encountered. I have put in countless hours and I am no closer to receiving a satisfactory answer to my claim than I was two months ago when I filed it. Consumer Affairs and the BBB need to put an end to this property and this sham. Hard-working people are being ripped off and their dreams are turning into nightmares. Look at the overall rating of 1.2 where 1 is the lowest rating you can get. This company is committing fraud in the inducement and no one is doing anything about it.

After booking a European trip on November 2019 for vacation taking place in June 2020, I purchased AIG / Travel Guard to ensure my trip was covered. As soon as the pandemic was announced in March 17, 2020, coupled with my employer cancelling all vacations and requests days off because I was classified as essential, I emailed AIG / Travel Guard explaining this. I also provided all the paperwork, such as flight / hotel information and supporting official documents detailing what they request and needed.
As of this writing, I have yet to hear from any representative or receive an email, other than a generic no-reply email, of any communication to update my claims and status. I have attempted to call the company and with patience I was on hold for over three hours and I still was unable to get through. We paid a tour company and an airlines for the trip and added two days to the hotel reservation to recover from the flight. We also added travel insurance through Travel Guard for $496. In April both the tour company and airlines cancelled and refunded our money. Travel Guard would not refund our payment saying that we needed to cancel within the first 15 days to receive a refund. In 2008, the American public bailed out AIG, Travel Guard's parent, to the tune of 182 billion dollars. Where is the justice here? They should have refunded an unused policy. I booked a flight through Expedia last January. The flight was part of a excursion to Myrtle Beach under ludicrous premise to play golf (‘Golf’ is a four letter word for “drinking lots of beer). The flight was scheduled for April 22. At the time of booking I invested $19 for AIG Travel Guard Insurance – this is strongly recommended by Expedia. Expedia has a clever arrangement with AIG. They talk you into buying AIG insurance so that when your flight to Detroit ends up in Bangkok, Expedia tells that since you bought the AIG insurance you need to contact AIG.
Under the plan, AIG Travel Guard claims they will reimburse you up to your total trip cost if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip for any covered reason, subject to limitations and exclusions. Well about 3 weeks before the schedule departure date I was informed by the airline that my flight was cancelled because of the Covid 19 pandemic. I contacted Expedia who, of course, told me I had to contact AIG. When I called AIG I was instructed by a computer (of course no one actually works for AIG except computer programmers) to wait till 5 days before my scheduled flight before filing a claim. And, of course, the claim had to be filed electronically online.
It takes more time to file a claim than to take SAT exam. And you just can’t tell them what happened. You have to choose from a list why you didn’t make your flight and of course ‘the flight got canceled’ isn’t one of them. Check the box why you missed your flight include:o My husband died of Bubonic Plague
o I got a speeding ticket going through Holland Tunnel
o My water sprinkler system wouldn’t turn off
o …
When you finally complete filling out the form they give you a Confirmation Number that has more numbers and letter than ‘War and Peace’ (they do this because it makes them seem more official). They tell you if you qualify you will be reimbursed within 10 days after your scheduled flight but if ever do have to contact them use the confirmation number.
After 10 days I go into the AIG Web site to find out the status of my case. As requested I enter the confirmation number and my last name and after a few seconds I get a response “That confirmation number does not exist”. (I hope they don’t pay the computer programmer who wrote this piece of code a lot of money).
Now I feel I really have to talk to ‘someone’ at AIG. And, of course, it would be easier finding Richard Kimble than to find a phone number for AIG on the Internet. But I persevere. So what better way to spend a day than waiting on hold for Customer Service, listening to snip-its of classical music in between a recording telling you how important your call is to them and how busy they are.
And when you finally do get through to an AIG customer service agent and tell them you’re interested in the status of your claim the customer service agent immediately start speaking some language that sounds like a combination of Korean and Swahili. I think that programmer wrote the “That confirmation number does not exist” code would be well suited for customer service.
At the end of the day I come to the conclusion that I am not going to get my money back. (I hope that Travelocity does not have a similar arrangement with AIG). Losing the cost of the flight, I can live with, but getting ripped off by an insurance agency just rubs me the wrong way. Of course you have to take into consideration that $19 buy you enough beer to get through the first hole.

My husband and I flew to the Hawaiian Islands on Feb. 24, 2020. On March 20, we purchased a ticket on United Airlines to return to California on April 14, 2020. On March 23rd, all visitors were advised by the Mayor of Kauai to "leave as soon as possible". In fact, the airlines advised on that date that fights may not be accommodated after March 26th. We needed to leave immediately.
The only airline we could contact was Hawaiian. (We had to phone them at 3 AM and waited on the phone for 2 1/2 hours.) United never answered calls. We confirmed with HAL and left Kauai on March 24th. United would not refund our flight cost so as soon as we arrived home, I filed a claim with the AIG flight insurance we purchased.
On May 5th, AIG sent the following: "You filed a claim because your trip was cancelled due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It is noted that your policy became effective on March 20, 2020. The Covid-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020. As the effective date of your policy falls after the pandemic declaration, we have determined that the cancellation of your trip is not an "Unforeseen" event as defined in your insurance policy. Please note that your insurance policy defines Unforeseen as follows: Unforeseen means not known, anticipated, or reasonably expected, and occurring after the effective date of the benefit under which the claim is being made."
Is AIG Insurance trying to convince me that I should have "Foreseen" the complete lockdown and cancellation of all flights when I purchased the United First Class ticket to the mainland, scheduled for April 14, 2020??? Obviously, United Airlines did not "Foresee" the complete cancellation of all flights because they sold me the ticket on March 20, 2020. AIG apparently did not "Foresee" this worldwide cancellation of flights either. They happily sold me their travel policy on March 20, 2020. All I am convinced of is that this AIG insurance is a sham.

I tried to cancel thru the hotel but they wouldn't even answer their phones so I filed a claim with the insurance. As of May 5th, no response at all and of course, no refund. I have contacted Orbitz several times and they continue to give me the runaround and tell me to call the insurance company. Avoid using Travel Guard! You have lots of other options out there for travel insurance so choose one of them. The website is hard to navigate, and the documentation required to submit a claim is somewhat vague, but that wasn't the worst part of the experience. We paid $1435 for trip insurance, and when a flight delay forced us to stay another night, the company refused to pay for our room and one meal. The adjuster said our policy only covered delays that occurred while we were on our trip, and since the change occurred just prior to departure, they weren't paying.
Okay, but how about a little consistency. Our traveling companions (same flight, same delay, same hotel, same policy) received a check in the mail because they had flight delay insurance. Really??? They purchased the same policy!! How can they be covered, and we aren't?? Regardless of the policy details, this doesn't seem like good public relations or customer service to pay one client and not the other for an identical claim. Lesson learned! Just remember when you think of AIG just say A I Gee, I don't think so!!

Today I have spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone with Expedia, was then directed to Travel Guard. I spent 43 minutes on the phone with Travel Guard only to be told they don't do the review, this is done by Aonaffinity. I spend 47 minutes on hold waiting for an agent to pick up. The agent asked if I wanted her to email me a copy of the insurance policy so I would know the limits of the coverage.
The agent then gave me a list of "required documentation" including an itinerary. I explained there was no itinerary from the cruise as it changed as ports closed due to the virus and there was plenty of information on newspapers and online to support what happened to the Maasdam. She then said to make copies of all of those articles to submit with the claim.
I was at my wit's end and said I wanted to talk to a supervisor. She said they didn't have a supervisor and put me on hold. I have now been on this call for 1 hour and 34 minutes. This is nonsense. The travel agency (Ico Travel and Tour of San Diego, Ca) who recommended us to purchase our Travel insurance to Travel Guard did not provided us any information that this travel insurance has a very bad review and had many complains. I would NOT RECOMMENDED TRAVEL GUARD because of their very bad customer services. I have served in the U.S. Navy for 20 yrs and this is the first time in life who had experienced this very bad customer service.

I only had one option at the check out point when I was purchasing my flight ticket and later when I claimed it It took them 2 month to get back to me and they told, "The insurance you bought does not cover work related issue" which was the only reason I bought this on the first place. I feel absolutely cheated on. There was no indication of what reason to miss a flight is covered and whatnot and there was only one insurance option. Do not purchase this insurance and do not count on them to be reliable!

False Sense of Security for Travel. Purchased for a flight to Asia in December before COVID-19 was known. Event that I was attending was canceled and quarantines for people returning from Asia were starting in late January. I submitted the lengthy claim form to AIG with documentation. It seems like they're trying to weed out submissions with that process. After several weeks, I received a form letter that said my claim was denied. Their policy covers very little and the fine print leaves them a lot of room to deny claims. Make sure to review it very carefully or better yet avoid wasting your money with AIG Travel and Travel Guard. Instead, purchase flights with airlines that have no rebooking costs or purchase a cancel-for-any-reason policy through another company.

I submitted a claim Feb 11. Called Mar 3; was on hold for 90 minutes then hung up on. Tried contact form on website, no response. Might have been worth it to eat the cost of the cancelled ticket. Clearly they are actively hoping customers will give up and just take whatever they can get.

Our cruise line cancelled the cruise due to the corona virus. They returned 100% of our payments. Then I called AIG to cancel the insurance that I would not need since we weren't taking the trip. "No can do" they said and cited the contract clause that cancellations had to be within 15 days of purchase. Technically, they were correct. But given the extraordinary circumstances caused by the worldwide virus, one would expect a quality company to act in good faith and return a premium for insurance I would never use. I will never use this company again.

Tried to file a claim. Called 3 different phone #. No human to talk to. Tried going online to file a claim. As you move though the process it will ask you for some documentation. I go get it and it does not like the format or it's too big and every time you go retrieve something else hopefully in the right format The claim you have been working on is gone and you get to start the process all over. They clearly do not make a claim process as easy as it is to buy. They are sweet as can be to sell you but that seems to be as far as customer service goes. I know they are busy with the coronavirus and I am not sure but they say Australia wildfire.

Please do not be misled by star ratings of anything above one star. I was offered what I thought was a reasonable fee to have travel interruption/insurance on a trip for me and my family to Thailand via China on Air China. Due to Coronavirus the airline cancelled my reservation and asked me to accept a different departure. Such departure was at a time that I would not even have been in the state so obviously not able to meet.
The booking company Smart Fares/LBF Travel Inc., who I assume was the company that had notified the Travel Insurance company told me that the best thing for me to do was to cancel the entire itinerary for which they would submit to Air China for refund. Since they were aware that I had travel insurance, Air China gave me a partial refund (approx 50%) which I will hopefully someday see. After a lengthy process of being on hold then submitting numerous requested documents to Travel Guard/AIG and waiting for nearly two weeks, I called to check on status and was informed that my claim was denied because it did not meet qualifications.
I found this quite interesting as I would have thought that a Worldwide epidemic (Coronavirus) which led to the cancellation by Air China would have been sufficient for a claim. I will never buy travel insurance again and although they might stand firm that such language is not in the insurance policy I can also claim that the person who solicited the policy to me did not go into such detail, only that I was insured against any trip interruption.
I appreciate that Air China offered a 50% refund, but as it stands I'm the only one that stands to LOSE money; Air China gets over $1000 without me setting foot on their plane, Smart Fares will get paid their fee and AIG got their insurance payment. Each company will get a copy of this review with the hope that someone will see that I and my family have been wronged. Mr. **

We bought insurance to cover a trip to Antigua. The day we were to leave, the airline canceled our flight due to weather. We could not be rescheduled to leave for two more days and our trip was cancelled. Cocobay Antigua kept our $3500 resort payment as penalty. We thought, good thing we have insurance. Wrong! AIG only reimbursed $400 for trip delay. What a scam, I guess this is how they stay in business.

My flight was delayed due to bad weather; I had 3 extra days of hotel fees and car rental, not to mention food, etc. Filing my claim took several hours; the wait time to get to a human is very long. Then, it took them almost 3 months to process. Then, they gave me a whopping $8. Complete, total rip-off, terrible customer service - I have nothing good to say. Run, don't walk, from these scam artists.

I signed up for this insurance so if we had issues we could recoup some of our costs. Unfortunately someone basically has to die in order to get any money back. DO NOT GET THIS INSURANCE!! IT IS A SCAM!!! My wife ended up having to work and we had to just change the dates we were traveling. They would not honor their insurance. This company would rather have you lie and make something up rather than have people tell them the truth. Shameful!!

Do not believe the good reviews. So many companies these days pay people to cover their bad reps and I 100% believe this is one of those. My husband and I were right in the middle of all the Coronavirus mess while we were traveling to Thailand and Bali. We spent the last 2 days of our trip in a panic trying to reroute our flights to where we wouldn't have to fly Air China directly into Beijing and have a 9 hr layover in the middle of the plague. We couldn't even get Air China on the phone! We stayed up until 4am 2 days in a row trying to get it resolved. Expedia, who we booked our tickets through finally got in touch w Air China. They specifically directed us to NOT fly into their area. The only thing available was a direct flight from Bali to Dubai (one of the only countries not yet infected) that went to Houston so we took it thinking #1. We dont have a choice #2.
We have travel insurance that'll help cover the double cost of rerouting us. WRONG. Unless you actually get sick or die this company does not cover a single thing and there's even exclusions to those 2 things so it's basically a scam. If we would've gone to China and got sick and died they would've covered something... Maybe... but because we made the right choice to avoid it they didn't cover a single dollar. What a joke! All the rep did was repeatedly read their policy bbn over and over. I said, "Ok, how is a World Wide Emergency not considered an interruption or cancellation to our trip?!" He said, "Our policy is very specific and no where mentions the Coronavirus." Well, no kidding! None of us had even heard about it until now! Our only option now is to get our attorney involved. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

I purchased Travel Guard Insurance for a flight that I booked through Spirit Airlines. I had to cancel the trip. It's been WEEKS since I filed the claim and required documentation. In the original advertisement, the ad made it sound so easy, that if I had to cancel my flight, I would only lose $22.00. At the moment, I am on hold (up to 30 minute wait time) to speak to the representative named in my claim. This seems very much to be a MONEY GRAB! I paid for the insurance and it looks as if I may not get any money back. This should not be legal!!! What a waste of money. Bottom line....don't purchase it, at least through this company. They make you jump through so many hoops for something that should be so simple. I am going to file a claim through the Better Business Bureau. I don't know what else to do.

It only took a few minutes to reach an agent to purchase a policy, however, after purchasing and trying to reach an agent it has become impossible to receive any assistance. I called "Claims dept." and have waited on hold for 1 hour & 17 minutes only for the "agent" to tell me she wasn't licensed and couldn't help with my questions. EVERY other time I've attempted to call has been over a 25 min. wait. I was called back a day later but the rep still couldn't answer my questions. Upon trying to contact the claims dept. or any representative the phone lines put you on hold for a minimum of 25 minute wait then just hangs up. I tried this for 3 days. When trying to reach tech support to help with an online claim filing, you press #2 for tech support and it immediately hangs up. I tried this over 20 times.
This is totally unacceptable service with no remedy available. I finally had to call the Emergency line to get through to anyone that was willing to help. I finally got a claim filed due to the death of a family member of one of the traveling/insured. We will see how they take care of their customers during the claim process but I seriously doubt I will ever use this company again.

I purchased an AIG Travel Guard policy through Spirit Airlines when booking a flight. I had to cancel my trip due to a change in my work obligations. The claim process asked me for a notarized letter from my boss stating the reason, copies of emails, a letter from the airline with the cancellation, the original trip confirmation, etc. I gathered and submitted all the required documents only to be denied and told work related cancellations are not covered. It is deceptive and misleading to require people to send documentation to support a reason that isn't even covered under the policy. Why wouldn't the claim system just say "work isn't covered" as soon as you selected "work" as the reason? Truly a waste of time and money and highly dissatisfied with the entire process and the policy. I will never purchase travel insurance again and would wholeheartedly discourage anyone else from purchasing this either.

Travel Guard has expensive insurance while private insurance provide cheap and better coverage than AIG travel guard. Their insurance agents are very rude and will not listen to you and will use book words to not give you any money which you deserve.

We purchased a flight back in October for a flight to Wilmington. It was for a business class over there for one of our technicians, so we knew things could change last minute and wanted to be able to be protected, even on a non-refundable flight because these types of things change all of the time. After reading about Travel Guard and the things they list that they "cover" on their page labeled "Why Travel Insurance?" I soon discovered that everything they listed there was a JOKE. I do NOT advise wasting an extra $30 bucks or so on this company. We had to cancel our flight because the class got switched to a different weekend. For a company that claims they can get your money back if somebody that is not even you gets "sick" and everyone cancels, but your ticket is non refundable... it's kind of funny when they cannot get your money back or flight switched to a different weekend.
So we are not only out the $360 for the flight, but on top of that the waste of $30 for this joke of a company that claims they "have your back". Before you can even file your claim, they require you to call the airline you booked through, cancel the flight, and then provide flight cancellation proof before even filing the claim to see if you can get your money back. Sounds fishy. If I could give this company a 0/5, I so would.
Also, don't forget that their "customer service" is a joke as well. You talk to them once to get your claim going, then after that when you look up your claim number, because they won't send you an email if they denied it, you find out it is denied, try to contact them, and they won't even talk to you or explain why it didn't meet their apparent "criteria" when you provided everything they needed. I would NEVER buy this again, ever. People that have good luck with this? I don't know how you got approved. Nothing but bad news bears from this company. I have no idea how they are still operating.

I purchased TG trip insurance as part of my booking with United for a trip to Hong Kong in November 2019. Since the riots and violence in Hong Kong remained unabated into November, I had to cancel the trip. My claim for reimbursement for the plane ticket, which was nonrefundable, was denied because the fine print of the contract says that riots and civil disorder were not covered. This exclusion is unreasonable because it implies that people can travel in unsafe places. Additionally, the exclusion was not disclosed at the point of purchase because the contract was only available after purchase. TG's practice is designed to fool people into believing that they have trip insurance for protection. AVOID TRAVEL GUARD. It's not an honest company to do business with.
