We purchased Travel Guard insurance. Our flight was significantly delayed and we missed our connection. There were no more flights out and we had to stay overnight. After submitting documentation and receipts, Travel Guard denied our claim 100% and closed the claim. I would not purchase insurance from Travel Guard again.

I had a good experience with Travel Guard overall. The coverage options were easy to understand, and purchasing the policy was straightforward. I had to contact customer support with a question, and they were helpful and clear. The claims process took some time, which was a bit frustrating, but everything was handled fairly in the end. I’d use them again for peace of mind when traveling.

Travel Guard and AIG insurance is not worth it and I would advise never to purchase this travel insurance. I have a legitimate claim and have had to send the same information to a very rude and difficult claim agent. The agent despite having all information focused on and was only interested not in the facts but rather for finding ways to deny claims without reading, regarding or considering the facts and documentation submitted, which could easily be verified.
This company and its travelers insurance lacks of customer care, consideration, attention to detail and maintains a "profit" only approach. Even when a claim is legitimate they work every possible way to deny it. The assigned claims case adjuster or processer is not able to be reached despite providing a contact phone number. None of the AIG or Travel Guard phone numbers work, or if you do get someone, they can't help you with your case, complaint or concern, as they simply say they are not the adjuster and can only pass information. The hide behind emails, bogus contact numbers and foreign call centers staffed with people who don't speak or understand English very well which is a cowards way out of facing the failures of their scam insurance. I now see what AIG travel insurance is all about!!!!
This was my first experience with using travel insurance and it will definitely be my last. It's not about the money, I could careless if AIG and Travel Guard ever pay the claim, its about integrity, customer service, and heart, all of which AIG and Travel Guard have none!!! Lastly, the irony is I filed the original claim in August-September 2025, I just received an email from them in January 2026, now acknowledging my original submission and claim was legitimate and correct, and now they've asked me to start the claim process all over again. Really!!! AIG and Travel Guard has no leadership, management, or customer service and claim quality assurance oversight. They deliberately make it difficult or impossible to speak with a supervisor or manager and definitely are not interested in your concern or problem. Take my advise and buyer beware, DON'T purchase AIG and Travel Guard insurance, if you have a claim you will regret it!!!

Unless you are dead or dying they make it pretty much impossible to get any of your money back. They said in the policy that I would be refunded in the case of cancelation for work. A work thing came up that I had to cancel for but when I submitted for my refund they said that i needed written documentation requesting time off from work, another one with written approval for time off, and a final written notice requesting I work during that time. They bounced me back and forth between different departments. And then denied my claim.

My husband planned a mountaineering trip and we purchased a policy with Travel Guard. The trip was cancelled due to extremely high avalanche danger which made the climb impossible. Although we sent all the requested documentation from the mountain guiding company, our claim was denied. Since the airline gave us a reusable credit and the guiding company refunded the total cost, we were claiming only a small amount--the cost of the condo (which was non-refundable). We were informed that our claim was 100% denied because our flight was not cancelled. Buyer beware!!

I highly would not recommend this company. We had to cancel our trip and they’re refusing to refund our money because we don’t believe in going to doctors. All natural care, I would not recommend it at all. You try to get a hold of the CEO of the company and he will not return your call. They tell you they called you back and they do not call you back.

Scamming people on the name of insurance. I booked 2 day hotel stays. I had to cancel my stay because my wife is pregnant and she wasn’t feeling well that day. I canceled the stay and asked for travel guard insurance to cover it so i can get my $500 refund. I got the response that unless I present them a medical proof from hospital that my wife wasn’t feeling good that day, then only i can get refund. So my question is why they didn’t state these type of requirements before I purchased the insurance.

I would first preface this review by saying "Buyer Beware." If at all possible, do not purchase TRAVEL GUARD INSURANCE. Ask if your trip can be insured through another insurance carrier or your auto insurance. I was unable to travel due to work, I was told this was not a valid reason to cancel my trip. And therefore refused to refund 3,340 dollars plus their fee. I have reported them to Consumer Affairs and the Better Business Bureau. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I will continue to post this everyday.

Great insurance unless you need to file a claim. I have spent literally thousands of dollars with them over a number of years. Never had to file a claim. Then when I had to miss two days of cycling trip because of a luggage delay, they denied me. This was after making me jump through numerous hoops gathering information and the reasons for denial were a matter of interpretation. They certainly could have justified paying it. After many loyal years with them and many referrals to my friends, I am now a former customer and will do my best to spread the word.

When my airline changed the schedule of my flight, I had to cancel a hotel reservation that I had insured. Travel Guard refused the claim because "your trip was canceled due to a carrier caused issue." In other words, the policy has loopholes so that the company can avoid claims.

I wish I had read these before I spent the money with this company. I paid insurance on 3 flights, had a measly $54 claim and they just wrote me back to say that I had cancelled the policy. Then when I asked them to provide proof of cancellation, they said to deal with Expedia, where I purchased it directly. Then, even after I got proof from Expedia that the policy was not cancelled, they just ignored my emails. I have filed a report with the FTC and encourage others to do the same. This company needs to be brought down. They are a SCAM.

This in NOT insurance, but a SCAM. They refuse to cover even when the policy clearly states the situation is covered. Then you cannot elevate nor challenge their claim that the policy doesn't cover. Calling doesn't help. Sending a copy of the policy with appropriate section highlighted doesn't help. They just write this is not covered.

It is now three years later, and I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE CHECK! I purchased policies for travels in 2021 and in 2022. I had to cancel both trips due to my husband's illnesses. AIG denied the first claim even though my husband had been hospitalized. After going through the hoops and getting his doctors to write even more notes for AIG, we were again denied. I gave up. There went $850 out the window. I would have been better off if I had just accepted the airline's offer of substitute tickets (for a future trip). AIG "approved" the 2022 claim and told me they were sending the check. Didn't receive it. Waited a couple of months and called them again. Was told the check was printed and would be mailed. Never received anything.
I called today, 11/21/25 to follow up. (Yes, I know, three years later, but life and lots more hospitalizations happen.) The representative today said that the check had been printed on two occasions, and she affirmed that neither check had been cashed. Were they ever mailed? I don't think so. The representative today said she has to send the request to an "examiner." I am giving them two weeks before making a formal complaint to Minnesota's Attorney General and to the Commerce Department. Don't waste your money on this company.

Very bad experience with Travel Guard. Went to Costa Rica 9/2025. Precipitation prevented us from landing in San Jose. Left us in Liberia airport after long delay on tarmac (we were hoping they’d bring us back to San Jose). Sent us on very uncomfortable 3.5 hour drive back to San Jose and arrived at 1:30 am. Missed our pick up which was at 6:30 pm so booked a hotel at airport Holiday Inn so we could get pick up service back next day to take us to our final destination, Esterillos Oeste. After multiple attempts to recover just my hotel payment ($141.25) they sent a denial letter. I would not recommend them. Feels like a scam. I sent all receipts requested. They kept asking for a note from United Air explaining why the flight was delayed. Never happened.

ABSOLUTELY AVOID! Travel Guard Insurance is a Complete SCAM. If you are reading this, please heed my warning: DO NOT BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE FROM TRAVEL GUARD. Tell your family, your friends, and your colleagues to stay far away from this company. They deceive customers and will deny your legitimate claim after months of waiting. I submitted a claim for a loss of approximately $800. I spent four grueling months going back and forth, meticulously providing every single document they requested. I gave them more than enough evidence to prove my claim was legitimate, yet they still found a way to deny it.
This experience confirms they are not in the business of honoring their policies; they are in the business of collecting premiums and systematically denying claims. They believe they "won" by saving $800 on my claim, but they have fundamentally lost a customer—and I assure them they are losing far more customers every single day because of this deceitful practice.

The trip was rescheduled for November of next year. I requested a transfer of the dates of my policy to next November and was denied; other travelers in my biking group had trip insurance that other insurance companies switch dates for immediately and with no question. I’ve never been more disappointed in a company that claims to provide “travel protection.” My experience with Travel Guard has been an absolute nightmare. Sure hope no one else out there's considers there pets family. I purchased a policy expecting support and understanding if an unforeseen emergency arose — that’s literally why people buy travel insurance. Unfortunately, when my dog needed emergency surgery, I had to reschedule my hotel stay. This wasn’t a “change of plans.” It was a genuine emergency, backed by veterinary records and invoices.
Travel Guard’s response? A cold, scripted denial — insisting this “didn’t qualify” under their covered reasons. Apparently, the definition of “emergency” only applies when it’s convenient for them. I provided every document they requested and still got nowhere. The irony is painful: their marketing talks about compassion, coverage, and peace of mind — but when you actually need help, you find out it’s all fine print and loopholes. If you’re considering buying a Travel Guard policy, save yourself the money and the frustration. Their coverage is meaningless when life actually happens. I’ll never use them again, and I’ll make sure everyone I know avoids them too.

Absolutely criminal. I bought the insurance for a United flight. Due to budget cuts and downsizing, we aren't allowed to take vacation during a black out period (my flight was scheduled during this time). Trying to get a hold of someone to read the fine print and send it to you was a job in and of itself. They direct you to an online portal where you have to know your policy number, however that isn't on your receipt. I asked for the fine print to be emailed, but a week later they sent an email saying I should receive my information in 7-10 days in the mail. I had to call them back again to get it emailed. However when I did get it, it says the insurance will cover if you have an unforeseen event including if you have to miss your trip due to an employer mandating you work during that time.
I sent them the information from my employer, however they still denied the claim. They said my vacation "got changed", that the original flight was covered however United changed the flight times slightly. They signed, "let us know if you have any questions", and I replied and they won't answer me at all. It's been almost a month now. I have never had a problem with travel insurance before and I've had to use it a couple times. Don't buy from A-I-G Travel Guard. United please go to another company!

Travel Guard is worthless as a travel insurance company. I wanted to go to India, but I was born in Pakistan (I'm a regular ** American male; my parents were working in Pakistan for two years in the 1950s), so the Indian government didn't grant me a visa until eight days after I would have returned from my trip. India and Pakistan have been in a low-grade war situation for decades.
The trip, like several others in previous years, was insured by Travel Guard so I turned to them, and they said they would not cover anything because not getting a visa was not covered. They said if I had had a heart attack or the city I was going to had been bombed within the previous 30 days, they would cover me. I could appeal that decision, so I wrote a long letter and included documentation, but they again refused to pay anything, so I lost around $18,000 and missed the trip of a lifetime. We have used AIG for our trip insurance for two separate trips. In both cases, we submitted claims and were rejected. The first trip was a cruise down the Nile. Just before our trip, war broke out in the Middle East. Travel to Egypt was not recommended. We felt unsafe. We attempted to cancel our trip and submitted a claim. AIG told us that "war is not an acceptable reason" for cancelling our trip. War is not acceptable?! We were denied. Luckily, the travel agency allowed us to book another cruise at a later date to another part of the world.
In the second case, we booked five hotel rooms at a motel in Virginia City, NV, for a family reunion. We booked the rooms several months in advance. Knowing there could be a risk of one or two family members not making it, including our daughter-in-law, who was pregnant (but not due during the family reunion). So, we added AIG travel insurance when prompted by Expedia to do so. Weeks before the date, our daughter-in-law had her baby. But given past complications, it was not recommended that she travel when the time arrived. We therefore cancelled one of our four rooms at the motel. We filed a claim with AIG, which responded that "giving birth" was not an acceptable reason for cancellation.
Buyer beware! We would have been better off having never paid AIG for travel insurance. Travel sites, such as Expedia, always prompt you to purchase travel insurance because "you never know when something might interrupt your plans." Well, if that something is childbirth or war, don't waste your money on "pretend" travel insurance!

I booked my hotel reservation for my daughter’s graduate school graduation in Pennsylvania in May 2025 well in advance and purchased the insurance in case anything happened that would result in a change of plans. The university notified us about 1 week before graduation with time changes. Because the graduation was pushed back four hours, we no longer needed to stay overnight the night before. Hotels.com did not refund us (as expected). So I filed my claim, after not receiving an acknowledgment I followed up and AIG Insurance said they needed evidence that we purchased the insurance. I submitted the email confirmation of the purchase and waited weeks, no word.
I checked the status of the claim on their site which stated the claim was processed. I followed up with the claim’s adjuster and a few days later received an email stating that the claim was denied because the change in graduation time was not a covered reason for reimbursement. I always thought the purpose of travel insurance was to provide coverage for incidents beyond the customer’s control.

My refund was denied first because I had to switch dates due to my university not having a summer commencement (I showed proof of my graduation date being in August, but the university stating that the commencement was in December, not on the regular graduation date for other terms). When attending events in the town, you have to book far ahead or you won't get a room; I wasn't even able to modify my reservation date. Right after I booked the room, however, I found that my mom had been diagnosed with cancer and would be going through chemotherapy, for which I got FMLA from my work so I could help take care of her.
AIG requested medical information from her doctor, including diagnosis, how long the condition had lasted, if she had a medical condition prior to the date of my booking and other information that AIG should NOT be privy to under HIPAA. I refused to give it to them. Rest assured if you think you will ever get a refund for having to cancel your travel arrangements, even if you meet the conditions, they will make you jump through hoops and if it's medically related you will have to show proof.

Do NOT use Travel Guard... They are crooks. We just booked a roundtrip flight on Breeze Airways for four people and decided to purchase the trip protection insurance offered on the Breeze website, which is thru Travel Guard. Big mistake. After buying it, I decided to look at the reviews and saw that the vast majority were terrible.... People with legitimate reasons for requesting a refund were either denied or given the runaround and blown off.
Upon discovering this, I called them to cancel it. After giving the rep my name (which was the name I booked the trip under), the name of the airlines and the confirmation number, he said that he couldn't pull it up with that information. Red flag #1. He then asked for the name of another traveler, so I gave him my wife's name. He then asked for my DOB and home address (red flag # 2), which I did not provide, explaining that he shouldn't need that sort of personal info to pull up our policy. He backed down and said he was able to find our policy and gave me the policy number, but then said he'd have to transfer me to a separate department that handles refund requests.
Long story short, he could never connect me with anyone in that department, supposedly due to high call volume. He also said that he could submit a request for someone to call me back, which I figured was BS. I finally just called our credit card company and disputed the charge, and Travel Guard will now incur a fee for their nonsense and a canceled transaction. Do NOT buy insurance thru Travel Guard. Not sure how they maintain an A+ rating with the BBB when the vast majority of reviews are horrible. Must just be because they pay their annual fee and have a verifiable founder. You will NOT get your money back, no matter how legitimate your reasons are!!

Extremely Disappointed – Avoid This Travel Insurance Provider. I purchased travel insurance expecting it to provide peace of mind in case something went wrong with my trip. Well, my flight was canceled due to the war-related conflict between Israel and Iran—a serious and unexpected situation completely outside of my control. I filed a claim, thinking this is exactly the type of situation insurance is meant to help with.
Instead, I was denied coverage because "war or act of war" is excluded. So let me get this straight: I lost thousands of dollars, followed the proper claims process, and still got nothing back because of a technicality buried in the fine print? This company clearly designs its policies to collect premiums and dodge responsibility when customers actually need help. Their response was cold and dismissive, with zero compassion or attempt to assist in any way. If you’re thinking about buying travel insurance from this company—don’t. When disaster strikes, they won’t be there for you.

I made reservations on Dec 31st through Expedia for a hotel stay over the 4th of July weekend in WI. I've stayed there several times for the same event and didn't think anything of it, but this year I booked well in advance to make sure I had a room. I was surprised that there was no cancel at any time clause when I booked, so I decided to add insurance through AIG, via Expedia. It was $15 and I considered it to be reasonable if something should require me to make different plans. In April I had a friend ask if I booked and I said yes, but I would look to see if other rooms were still available for the same dates. I was surprised that rooms were still available, but now they were indeed, "cancel at any time". So as fate would have it, I was forced to retire and with the lost of wages, decided it would be best to cancel the trip and in doing so looked into what I needed to do to file a claim with AIG.
AIG requires you to cancel the reservation before filing the claim, which seems reasonable until you realize they have no intention, nor ever did of standing behind their policy. So not only are you out the full amount of the reservation, but the policy fee through AIG. On top of that, had I known I would be out the money and the claim would be denied, I would have not canceled the trip and at least gotten value for the money that was spent in Dec, regardless of the financial hardship. The hotel still lists several rooms available for those same dates and they kept my money. AIG got my $15 and never did anything but sent me a C&P email. Both made money on a transaction that can still be purchased for the same price this day, 4 weeks away. AIG is borderline fraudulent in the way it presents itself through a booking agent like Expedia. They have both broken my trust and will never use either again.

Well, I called AIG to try to change the insurance for my next flight and they said that was not allowed but that I could file a trip cancellation. I submitted a claim with all the documentation and they denied my claim even though all I was asking was the 70.00 difference.
They said that change a flight is not covered. Well I replied that the only reason I had to change or cancel and book another flight was due to the fact that I had Covid. So, as I could see this company is not worth anyone’s money or time since many over here have given them 1 out of 5 and probably many felt like giving a zero. What followed was an exhausting and frustrating process. AIG repeatedly requested documentation—airline tickets, cancellation proof, and a death certificate. I sent everything, first as photos, then via fax, then scanned copies, and finally PDFs. Each time, they moved the goalposts. After submitting everything, they demanded a letter from the airline and even HIPAA forms—completely unnecessary for a travel claim.
After jumping through every hoop, AIG approved only a partial reimbursement of approximately $412. I declined their offer and requested a refund of the insurance premium instead. Three months later, after repeated requests from the adjuster for receipts, credit card verifications, and other documentation we were advised that our policy did not cover weather related cancelations. This is the biggest scam ever insurance. They find whatever to deny coverage. I purchased flight insurance for my travel dates and my flight was changed and was under the impression that since they knew all the info on the first they would get the update on the change. Come to find out, they did not extend my insurance as requested because I sent an email after original flight date expired to make sure they have my changes only to get an email back that my request is denied because it came 2 days later while I was still on my original trip. I’m very irritated at AIG (automatic travel insurance through airline). The company, I used to work for, declared chap 7 bankruptcy (ie shut everything down and everyone is fired). I would think that this a good grounds for qualifying for filing a claim: losing my job (no fault of mine) per the terms for insurance reimbursement. When one files for insurance claim AIG requires a lot of leg work of the filer to submit so they can determine if your claim qualifies which I completed. After they reviewed my case, claim denied due to a lengthy list of legal reasons. Lesson learned: AIG is not worth the cost if you can’t get a claim to be repaid. I wish I could rate a 0 instead of a 1. Never again AIG!!!! Buyer beware!

(b) your scheduled Departure
Unfortunately I didn’t understand the “Lawyer Speak” and thought the effective date would be Nov 10th but they consider the date I bought it, is the effective date. Also thought I was good as the trip was 2 months out. This policy doesn’t make any sense but to scam folks out of a refund because who would cancel 15 days out from buying it. Most folks would purchase insurance and if anything happens close to the trip date, then they would cancel. I also booked extra car insurance and they immediately refunded everything. When check finally came, I deposited it via mobile deposit. 2 days later my bank took back money due to insufficient funds in AIG account. I called their bank and it was verified. I contacted AIG and they blamed my bank, accused me of trying to cash the check twice. I told them it was on their side but they refused to believe that even after I told them I verified it with their OWN bank.
Brad at AIG customer service was the rudest, most condescending, person I have ever dealt with on any phone call. He's the one that accused me of all the comments above. They finally issued me another check that cleared but it took weeks. Never apologized, never admitted that it was their fault. Horrible experience. Zero stars. I will never use this company again. It was to be the dream trip of my retirement. I had put aside enough money for a trip to Switzerland and Italy, and as soon as I made the first payment on the trip, I bought a travel insurance policy from AIG. When my traveling companion became ill, we decided at the last minute that we had to cancel the trip. I immediately put in a claim with AIG. The claim process was terrible. Although I was given the names of two potential claim representatives, I could never contact either one of them. All I could do was send my communications to a generic “claimsdoc" email. I was never given any contact information, much less a phone number, and all I ever received from them was a series of computer-generated cut-and-paste emails in different fonts, vaguely referring to "enclosed" forms that were neither attached nor "enclosed." The anonymity of the process was nothing short of Kafka-esque.
Then AIG would not accept a letter from my companion's doctor. She saw several doctors, and I never found out which doctor they wanted to complete their form. In addition, our trip having been cancelled at the last minute, many of the questions on their form made no sense. But AIG insisted on having their form completed. Imagine how easy it is to get a busy doctor, having once taken the time to write a letter, to then fill another form. Eventually her surgeon did complete the form and I submitted it. The process took weeks of frustration. I did not even claim the airfare, since I had hoped at a later time to use the credit that we were given and therefore did not believe that it was "non-refundable."
In the meantime, having paid extra for “Cancel for Any Reason" coverage, I asked AIG at least to pay me the 50% Cancel for Any Reason coverage that I had purchased, since my companion was then still trying to get one of her doctors to complete AIG's form. I never got a response. Eventually, I did get an email advising me that the claim had been approved. I still don’t know whether they approved the Cancel for Any Reason coverage or the full medical coverage, because they never told me how much they were supposed to be sending me, and, again, I had no one I could contact. Then I never received a check.
I waited two months, and I finally contacted them again. Their website said that the claim was closed, but I had never received any payment. I still haven’t. Did they ever actually send the check? What was the check amount? Did they send it by the mail or by more trusted delivery service such as FedEx or UPS? Was the check lost? Stolen? Cashed by someone else? None of these questions have been answered, and I have no one whom I can contact. A check for more than $10,000 may not mean much to AIG, but for a retired couple it is a lot of money. I would never recommend a travel insurance policy from AIG.

AIG Travel Guard Insurance makes filing claims so difficult I am sure in order to have clients give up. For example, I filed a claim by filling out the entire claim form they provided only to have them come back with an additional list of requirements, some of which had been covered on the claim form. For example, I initially furnished a copy of an actual credit card receipt along with the bill marked "Paid" as required on the claim form and they came back to me requiring a copy of my bank or credit card statement as proof of payment..
For some reason, they also added the requirement that I furnish them with copies of the front and back of my regular insurance certificate for some unknown reason. That also was not requested on the original claim form. Also, they asked again for a release of medical information form (HIPAA) although that also was part of the original claim form and was signed by myself. The people that I spoke with when signing up for the insurance as well as those in the claims department with whom I communicated were very nice but in retrospect, I suspect that was a part of the ploy to appear nice while wearing clients down to the point of giving up. Unfortunately, I am giving up although I still have approximately $600 in medical bills filed or to be filed.

NIGHTMARE! To try and make a long nightmare short... AIG cancelled my mom's claim and mistook it for mine while she was out of the country, a family emergency occurred and I needed to book her a flight to return from Peru immediately but LATAM airlines would not help to cancel her original flight date until they could speak with the travel agent despite having all information for her flight (that day I learned just how much power a random travel agent could hold, this was the only one person representing this travel agency).
Back to AIG, they are on a recorded call telling me that my insurance would not be cancelled due to a credit card issue and not to worry. I asked for a reference number for the call and was told they can't issue one. Fine, next thing you know insurance was cancelled on my mom's flight (not even mine which is the one they intended to cancel due to credit card issue even though they told me not to worry it wouldn't be cancelled), next thing you know my mom is in timbuktu during a huge family emergency without any medical coverage etc.
I called AIG day after day after day. Each day I got a different answer and had to repeat the story of what happened. Each time took countless hours that I will never get back. Once I got to a supervisor who apologized and said to allow him to listen to the calls so they can see where they told me that my mom was insured and to "enjoy her trip", then he would go ahead with our refund) never heard back from him, called again each day and finally got a call back from "Senior operations manager" named Blake (my first encounter with someone who speaks fluent english), first conversation went well and he apologized.
The next thing I knew he was emailing me back essentially accusing me of fraud, despite me providing all medical documents and getting their forms filled out by the Dr). Oh and please allow 15-20 business days for them to respond by emails. Their negligence and incompetence, lack of accountability, can cause a lot of grief and money! My experience has led me to believe Travel Guard (AIG) designs their policies to fail their customers. I echo the previous posts who feel it's a scam, cash grab and an untrustworthy company. I think you should go elsewhere for travel insurance. I think this company sells cheap insurance to lure you in and then doesn't deliver in your time of need.
I went as far as sending correspondence to senior staff (Peter ** CEO and others). Not one of these people acknowledged me. A true executive to believes in their company, the value of its customers, and prides themselves with honor and morals would have done more. My opinion is they are shameful and exhibit unethical business practices. I would recommend Investors think long and hard before they tie their name to a disgraceful company with such business practices as this one.
My experience also leads me to believe, providing quality fair service is not their objective. Their profits are solely based on robbing and tricking policy holders with unclear, policy terms. I should have paid more attention to previous reviews containing "Customers be warned". I highly encourage potential buyers to understand your policy in detail before buying. A warning sign is customer service unable to interpret their own policy. I experienced first hand how incompetent the staff were as I tried to navigate my policy with them in my time of need. The following is my complaint to the BBB. As of today, AIG has not responded to the BBB. On 12/4/2023, I booked an all inclusive vacation package to Tulum, Mexico through Travelocity for my girlfriend and I from 4/1/2024 to 4/7/2024. I was offered a package protection plan through AIG Travel Guard which I paid $250.70 for. My total vacation cost including travel protection was $2285.67. Since, it was pretty costly, I thought it would be worth it to pay that extra $200+ just in case something prevented us from going on this trip. I was wrong. So, in early March, I received notice that my company was bought out by another company and I was to report to the new company on 3/18/24. So, basically if I wanted to keep my job, I was going to have to cancel the vacation because my PTO with the new company was going to be denied. I cancelled the vacation and filed a claim on 3/13/24 and supplied them with all the documentation they asked for.
On 3/14/24, I received notice that my claim was denied. They said it was due to me not being employed with my current employer for over 5 years and that my relocation was under 100 miles. I made an appeal assuring them that I had been with that company long enough and it wasn't a question of relocation, it was a question of a risk of job loss. They denied my appeal. If I had known, that risk of job loss wasn't included in the reasons for getting a refund, I would've never purchased their crappy insurance. I am seeking a full refund of $2285.67 from this scam of a company because the only reason I bought their service was in case I had to cancel my trip and so I could get a full refund. I also want everyone to know not to give this company a dime of their money. Because of this experience, I won't ever use Travelocity or Expedia due to their dealings with this company.

I purchased travel insurance through this company for my car rental in December 2023. It covered liability and accident, however, I had a scrape situation, where I hit the side of the car with a pole while I was trying to park. It caused $7000 in damage. That was covered, however, I found out that the diminution of value to the car caused by that accident was not covered by my insurance. As a result, they are asking for $6800 after the insurance has paid the claim. I have no coverage for this amount. I was shocked, I will never buy this insurance again. Also, it was very difficult to find the right phone number to contact to file the claim. There were numerous different companies referring me to other companies. It took several days before I figured it out.

We bought flight cancellation insurance for flights to Singapore to start a cruise with Cunard going through the Red Sea. The booking and insurance was done with Expedia through AIG. Claims seem to go through Travel Guard Canada. Cunard cancelled the cruise and promptly provided us with a complete refund. I called AIG twice to discuss the situation and confirm their insurance would cover the flight cancelation. They would not provide any definitive information until I fully cancelled the flight and declined a future credit with the airline company. I then filed for the insurance coverage and was promptly denied. Their arguments for refusal are tenuous at best. I would have at least had a credit for future use with the airline if they had been a bit more forthcoming with their questionable decisions. These were overseas flights and cost over $2,200 Cdn.

I will be reporting them to the appropriate entities in my state, as our AG is motivated to deal with consumer protection issues, that specifically include actions against travel insurance BAD FAITH.
If you pruchase a policy, are covered by its terms & they fail to process and adjudicate your valid claim in a timely manner: REPORT THEM TO YOUR STATE INSURANCE DEPT & YOUR STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL (AG) OFFICE! What a waste of money. I paid a premium of $800.00 for a January trip to Israel. My claim was for the $600.00 the travel agency kept as a trip cancellation fee. Who knew Hamas was going to attack Israel. I'm not going to endanger my family's safety. Isn't that a reason enough to cancel a trip but Travel Guard said that was an exclusion. Travel Guard would still have made a profit of $200.00 if they paid the claim but now they get to keep all of the premium. I sure despise Travel Guard. They're laughing all the way to the bank.

Our flight was delayed 24 hours causing us to miss the boat in Amsterdam. Viking had booked our flights and they made several attempts for us to meet the boat at one of the ports of call. Unfortunately nothing worked out and we made the decision to cancel, since we felt confident we were covered with trip insurance. After filing the requested documents with Travel Guard, and waiting over 2 weeks, Travel Guard said they could only reimburse us 2K for a "trip delay". We paid 1K for the policy so essentially were got 1K for a trip we paid 19K for. We tried to appeal but the policy had so many loopholes we realized we were wasting our time. Travel Guard has refused to reimburse any money paid for the policy because it was not cancelled within 15 days of the booked policy. WHO IN THE WORLD KNEW THAT HAMAS WAS GOING TO ATTACK ISRAEL??? Coordinated a trip for 16 people to embark on a Viking River Boat Cruise. We purchased a travel policy from AIG/Travel Guard for this ONCE IN A LIFETIME European Vacation. The travel protection plan was recommended by our travel agent. We felt confident we were covered 100% in case of any issues beyond our control were to take place. Unfortunately, everything that could go wrong went wrong and four of us ultimately missed our trip. Our flight was delayed 24 hours and we missed our boat in Amsterdam. After numerous attempts were made to find a way to meet the boat we were informed there was no available options that would allow us to make it. However, as disappointed as we were we felt ok and relieved knowing that our investment had been protected by the insurance policy we specifically purchased for this trip. Only to find out, the policy contained many loopholes and exceptions in which we fell victim to.
So after paying for the policy and saving for 4 years for this vacation we learned that our coverage of $19K only qualified for $2,500 reimbursement. After submitting a 25 page claim, over 160 emails thus far and numerous phone calls we have learned we ultimately wasted our time and hard earned money on this policy. I will never purchase travel protection again. I've heard nightmares about situations like this, but I felt we followed every protocol we needed to in order to protect ourselves. We worked with a travel agent, and we purchased the protection recommended and we followed all recommendations to ensure a seamless experience. The day before I was scheduled to leave I got a call from the airline that my flight to PWM was cancelled due to weather as a result of Hurricane Lee. The airline re-booked me for free to the closest available airport Boston-Logan, MA BOS, and from there I rented a car and completed my trip. Upon returning I filed a trip interruption claim with AIG. Trip interruption due to weather is a covered event according to the policy. I submitted the letter from the airline stating the flights were cancelled due to weather along with all the receipts that coincide with the trip interruption.
As of the date of this review (14 November 2023) AIG has still not resolved the claim. I get repeated requests for "Required Documents: VERIFICATION DESTINATION MADE INACCESSIBLE DUE TO HURRICANE." (That is copied directly from their e-mail.) Repeated calls to customer service and no one can tell me what the burden of proof is that they need. Apparently correspondence from the airline, coupled with every news outlet in America reporting on that hurricane is not enough. In my opinion, AIG makes their product sounds great to travelers looking for peace of mind, however when it is time to pay a claim they find a way to weasel their way out of it. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

[1] I called your helpline on the morning of December 16th, 2021 (about 11 AM Eastern Standard Time). The operator told me that I was covered after I mentioned the word COVID. He went as far as giving me advice to refuse benefits from United Airlines because that would complicate my claim with AIG which he said was certain. I was adamant in my erroneous belief that an AIG representative stated that my trip was covered and to refuse United Airlines refunds because it would make the claim recovery process more complicated.
[2] My uncle died of COVID that morning.
[3] Omicron variant was rising in Spain. I knew this was not going well. When I purchased the tickets, on November 14th, the daily average of new cases in Spain (according to the NY Times) was 3074. On the day I canceled the tickets was 24,846, the factor increase is greater than 8x. As I write this the daily average is a record high for Spain, 56,771, a factor of 18x greater than the date of purchase.
[4] I canceled 6 days before the flight left hoping that Lufthansa could find others for the seats. United has a full 18 days to fill those seats (perhaps someone without a 10 year old son).
Yes, I understand that the fine print does not cover my exact case but 2020 and 2021 have been extraordinary years and you would expect a venerable institution like AIG to have a heart and not always follow the fine print in extraordinary circumstances. You want proof of extraordinary circumstances? In the early afternoon (Eastern Standard Time) of December 20th, 4 hours before I and my 10 year old son were to take off the State Department of the United States issued this statement (I paste from the website travel.state.gov).---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spain Travel Advisory Issued December 20th, 2021 Spain – Level 4 --- Do Not Travel. Do not travel to Spain due to COVID-19. Exercise increased caution in Spain due to terrorism and civil unrest. Read the Department of State’s COVID-19 page before you plan any international travel.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice for Spain due to COVID-19, indicating a very high level of COVID-19 in the country. Your risk of contracting COVID-19 and developing severe symptoms may be lower if you are fully vaccinated with an FDA authorized vaccine. Before planning any international travel, please review the CDC’s specific recommendations for fully vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers. Visit the Embassy's COVID-19 page for more information on COVID-19 and related restrictions and conditions in Spain.
Country Summary: Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Spain. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas. Demonstrations are common. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.----
You claim these are not covered under the fine print, especially to a father with a 10 year old son? The world had no inkling on November 14th, when the tickets were purchased, that this would happen but with some foresight I tried to hedge my bet against a rise in COVID and purchased your insurance. On November 14th, after I purchased your insurance Cheaptickets.com sent me an email which begins as follows:----
Breathe easy! Your trip is protected.
You’ve added Flight Protection Plan to your trip to Barcelona.
Is it not problematic to use statements like “breathe easy” and “Your trip is protected” during a global pandemic which affects the respiratory system? Yes, life happens AIG. Since I bought the tickets for my son and I• COVID has hit record numbers in Spain (a factor of 18 increase).
• My uncle died of COVID, five other family members have tested positive, many of them juvenile.
• The State Department issued a DO NOT TRAVEL TO SPAIN and a DO NOT TRAVEL TO GERMANY.
I, in due diligence, canceled as early as I had a premonition (so the airlines could sell the seats and I could avoid quarantining my son during a ten day family vacation to his grandparents), and I called your helpline (and received erroneous advice). Do the correct thing as a venerable company that, I hope, is interested in maintaining their reputation.

Travel Guard (also known as AIG Travel) is little more than a scam. The wording of their policies is so restrictive that it's clearly an attempt to protect themselves from having to pay claims. To further discourage their customers, they make the claims process nearly impossible. For instance, in reply to my claim, they said they needed:
• "Claim form with supporting documentation which included: claim form, itinerary, response to the decision letter" — What does that mean? I already submitted the claim form. If I hadn't, there would be no claim in progress. They ask for supporting documentation without saying what that is. It would be like me telling Southwest Airlines, "Please sell me a ticket to city." Itinerary? This request makes little sense. What I planned to do during my trip is irrelevant and their request for such a thing is clearly just an attempt to complicate the process. "Response to the decision letter" is yet another requirement with no explanation.
• "Initial explanation for cancellation" —This was already provided with the claim. Why would they claim that it's still required?
If you feel you need travel insurance, please buy it through a reputable company. AIG/Travel Guard is no such place. You will not be protected whatsoever and will have donated money to AIG in return for nothing more than false hope.

Not only are they making it difficult to enter a claim (ex..requesting the same documents repeatedly, taking weeks and months to respond, etc) but they are refusing to pay as they had in the past. We had a purse snatching in Spain, for example, in April 2022 and spent hours of our trip at the police station making a report. This paperwork and documentation on the costs of the valuable items (iPhone, prescription glasses, AirPods) original and replacement costs should have been sufficient to make this claim but it took almost a year to get half the amount. Clearly, from their requests for the same paperwork every 4-6 weeks, the company hoped we would give up on the claim. What should have been simple and easy was ongoing and not satisfactory.

Back in 2022, Travel Guard was rated higher than now and someone helped me on the phone with policy questions. Move to today. Called - could not understand the person - they were of no help whatsoever. Could not answer even the most basic question about the policy. I will not use Travel Guard again.

AIG/Travel Guard are completely worthless and a waste of money. I spent over $400.00 on insurance in case of delays and lost baggage on a golf trip to Scotland. It took me over four months to get e letter for BA concerning my canceled flight from the so I could even submit my claim. I never got a copy of my policy but after submitting two cab rides, two hotel rooms, and a couple of meals, they said my maximum claim was only $100.00 a day per person. So $400.00 for the insurance and $770 pound in expenses and I got $200.00.
I should have reviewed Travel Guard because they have hundreds of one star reports on BBB for this exact situation. They claims person even had the nerve to call me back and say he spoke with his supervisors and they shouldn’t have even paid the $200.00. These guys are dishonest and a racket that should not be promoted by any travel company. Someone needs to sue AIG for a lot of money!!!

I bought travel insurance through the Airline (Spirit), and it was with Travel Guard. Got sick, Airline rules say I couldn't fly. Filed a claim with supporting paperwork. Went to check on my claim and of course, their system says they cannot find my name of claim number. This is what insurance Companies do - you file a claim and then they pretend they cannot find you in the system, so it never gets paid. You are just throwing your money away with travel insurance, you won't get paid.

I booked two Suncountry airline tickets for my grand daughter and I. Prior to our trip my mom fell ill and needed 24/7 care. I needed to cancel to take care of my mom. My mom’s doctor wrote a letter of her needing this care and that I was a necessary care provider. I submitted the doctors letter along with itinerary and payment. Suncountry gave me a voucher for partial of the ticket cost. I submitted the rest to Travel Guard. During the time of what would have been my travel my mom was put on hospice. I received a request from Travel Guard for more information. After my mom passed away I sent them the original doctors letter, the credit card info, etc along with the obituary. They sent their condolences and then later sent attachments for the doctors form to fill out and the hippa form. I’m not going to waste the doctors time on looking up dates etc, and who is suppose to sign the release of information form? What?
Interesting for this same time period, but separately I had booked a carnival cruise for my granddaughter and I. I went with Their protection plan with Aon Affinity Travel Practice. When I canceled the cruise the cruise reimbursed me what they could and the Aon Affinity reimbursed everything else. They did this just based on the doctors letter that I needed to care for my mom. They sent me the checks before my mom passed away.
Lessened learn I will take the insurance policy with Aon Affinity any day. But never will I take the insurance out again with Travel Guard. I am taking time to write this review to tell other to beware of Travel Guard. I wrote to Travel Guard and told them if they would have said their policy does not cover this then they should just say so. If their policy does cover this then they are certainly going to make it tough to get. Frankly it’s not worth my time. I will never regret staying with my mom. Getting the money back is the least of my concerns. I want to warn others. Suncountry is a good airline I hope they see this review as well. They might want to look closer at the agency they have linked on their site.

During my over two decades of active travels, I have never come across such a hopeless organization that does not see what customer has submitted for claim, does not see what email customer has sent even though their automatic system is quickly acknowledging and confirming receipt of email. It is over 10 weeks with at least 5 email and 3 phone contacts to them, but of no avail.

Please don't buy this product, they will firstly drag their feet for months, the customer service is horrendous and they will tell you, "Oh we are busy right now, we will call you back." NOTHING. My claim was denied with some clause that no one would understand, don't bother with this company, such a scam - the government should make companies like this illegal.

Very expensive tour was canceled due to civil unrest in destination country. Tour company was refunded my total costs but insurance isn't eligible for refund. I was offered a "voucher" for future travel for $138 less than what I paid. What value was received for that money? Trip insurance without a trip seems like stolen money.

We purchase the AIG Travel Guard insurance to cover domestic flight insurance for a 12/23/22 to 1/2/23 vacation. American Airlines delayed our flight 3 times and eventually cancelled our flight. We contact AIG for help while in the Phoenix, AZ airport. They provided no help saying it "was Christmas." So we worked on making other flight provisions on our own. We eventually flew with United Airlines, arriving in Florida a day late, but still in time to board our family Caribbean Christmas Cruise.
After returning home from the vacation, since 1/3/23, we have been unsuccessfully trying to have AIG send us the Delay of Flight claim form in order to begin the claim process. I have called and requested the form 6 times (each time they said we'd receive it in 7 to 10 days). It never came. I have unsuccessfully asked to speak with a supervisor 3 times. They did not connect me nor return my request for a phone call. This has been a long unsuccessful process and we haven't even been able to file a claim as of this date!!! We'd advise ----- use a different travel insurance company ----- the service for this company is terrible.

I have been waiting about six months for reimbursement from this company for a flight cancellation I had to make due to having spine surgery. Their tactic is delay, delay, delay and hope we go away. I am filing a class action suit against AIG and Travel Guard. If you have been mistreated by this company please contact me and you can join the class action. We don't pay anything. The attorneys do the work. We need to punish these people. Contact me at through Facebook messenger. Gary ** Dallas

My wife passed away Aug 20, 2022, a few days before leaving on a trip. I filed a claim with Travelguard and provided the necessary documentation. I was advised a check would be mailed 15-21 days after the claim was reviewed. An assessor wasn't assigned to the claim for three months. I suppose they were waiting for me to go away or die. He required me to send the same documents I'd already sent. I eventually did receive the amount I was entitled to but dragging it out that long makes AIG's integrity questionable. I can't speak for the quality of travel insurance from other providers but I can't imagine the experience could be worse.
