Airline tickets worth $1500 were lost even though I purchased AIG travel insurance. The insurance adjuster was sent the required medical paperwork and then continued to ask for the same paperwork which I filled out again. They are typical of insurance agencies. They collect your money and then refuse to pay when a claim is filed.

After reading all of the reviews on here, I was a bit nervous that my claim might be denied. I was supposed to fly 12/6, but was still getting over an infection. I was seen (and treated) by a doctor on 12/1 and given antibiotics. By 12/5 my symptoms had not subsided to a point that I was comfortable traveling and I was still taking the medication, so I cancelled my trip and submitted all of my paperwork from the doctor (diagnosis included) to AIG with my claim. On 12/16, I received approval on the claim, no questions asked, no further documentation required. My assumption is that 90% of people on here leaving bad reviews were trying to get reimbursed for reasons that were NOT covered by the insurance plan. That's a you problem, not a company problem. I will definitely purchase this insurance again in the future.

We purchase a Travelguard policy for each of our trips but have never had to use it until recently. Back in September we were taking a trip to Vienna, Salzburg and Prague. We were at the airport ready to board the aircraft when I decided I probably should not board due to some chest discomfort I had been having for a few days. We left the airport and went to the ER instead. I was told by the ER attending physician that my symptoms were not cardiac-related, so I got the all-clear to travel. We returned home and re-purchased tickets to depart the next day instead on a slightly different routing to meet up with our friends at the 2nd stop, Salzburg. We would miss Vienna altogether since we were to be there for just two nights anyway.
The trip went great, and when we returned home I began the task of rounding things up to submit a claim. I called Travelguard to begin the process and the representative suggested what I should list in the claim. Once I finally got everything I needed, I mailed all the information - a pile 1/2" thick mind you - in to travelguard. I was expecting a call from them to discuss my claim but no one ever called me. I patiently waited and watched the website for updates. It took about three weeks from the date they received my paperwork before I noticed on the website that my claim had been approved for all I had asked for (reimburse original airfare, transfers, train tickets).
I got an email the following day telling me the same thing the website indicated. Within a week of that, I had my reimbursement check. I was pleasantly surprised because I had read such dismal reviews on this webpage. But I followed all claim instructions to a "T", and even to the point of repetition of some things, so I had hoped I had given them more than enough information to make a determination.

Had visa issues so we cancelled our trip and they didn’t refund our cost. We trusted Travel Guard but I would say don’t go with travel guard. Agents are being so bad telling the same reason like we have in terms and conditions. And when I asked for my insurance money even if they didn’t cover my trip charge they where sending an e-mail that it has to be cancelled first 15 days of insurance, which looks like more fraudulent. Please don’t trust them. I lost my money and humanity from these agents.

Purchased this travel insurance together with airline ticket from Expedia.ca last August, 2019. I had to make changes to my itinerary that I have to travel earlier, so I cancelled my ticket and changed to an earlier date for 4 Sept. 2019. I made the claim (Claim No. **) for the cancellation of the first ticket on 30 Aug 2019. On 11 Oct 2019, they asked for the documents which I provided to them. I followed-up on 14 Nov, 2019 and my claim, as they said is already approved since 18 Oct 2019. As of this day, I still have not received my claim for this cancellation after several follow-ups through phone and email. People from the departments with these emails (infotravelguard@aig.com, CA.expcustsvc@aig.com and **) as given in the policy are not helpful and will just shrug-off your complaint. I would NOT RECOMMEND people to GET this travel insurance from EXPEDIA or other travel agencies.

I purchased a Christmas trip for my parents through Costco in June and promptly insured both parents through Travel Guard, Costco's recommended insurer. My mother passed away in September and I canceled her portion of the trip Oct. 8, and I filed a claim with all requested supporting documentation on Oct. 12. The claim is still under review. Costco has contacted Travel Guard on my behalf to speed up the process, but to date, I have received one scripted email from the claims adjuster. It's now been 9 weeks since the claim was filed.

If you have had your claim wrongfully denied by Travel Guard without a valid reason or have been worn out with duplicitous documentation, please contact your state's insurance commissioner. I was only paid after I filed an insurance complaint with my local Department Of Financial Services. You can use any search engine on your computer to locate your state's insurance regulation department.
I had my claim denied after 7 months. I was given two claim numbers for the same loss. I had faxed and filed my claim on Travel Guard's website. I was given duplicitous medical forms to be completed by my doctor who had already completed Travel Guard's Claims Form. The adjuster's for Travel Guard will avoid speaking with you over the phone and will send scripted emails that do not address your direct questions. The goal of Travel Guard is to wear you out so you will just give up. Do not give up. Keep all of your correspondence, document date/time of telephone calls/who you spoke to and retain all of your claim documents to use as evidence when you file your complaint with your state's insurance office. Your hard earned money is worth the effort.

We lodged an on-line claim for medical expenses on 14/11/2019. After no response, we rang AIG insurance to check on the status of our claim. The company's policy documents stated that upon receiving a claim, they would contact us in 1 to 2 days.??? This was 19 days later. Then after much heated discussion, they said that an email was being sent to us that very day. 8 hours later, still no sign of their email! We were told that as the policy was a Cancellation Only insurance policy, we were not entitled to any refund of our costs. Yet, the wording of their policy in the section - Covered Events include - serious injury or illness and this item has a TICK against it as being insured.
Page 5 of their policy wording - Coverage during your period of insurance for policies purchased with a hotel stay - states that the cover ends when we arrived and checked in at our Hotel. We had not yet arrived and checked in because our Hotel was in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and my wife's claim covers when we were STILL in MELBOURNE AIRPORT. We believe that this company has deliberately worded the document so as to confuse people so that they don't know what they are covered for and hope for the best.
They should not use duplicity of meanings for their words and phrases. Their policies should be in plain simple English so that everyday folk can fully understand what they have signed up. We want everyone to be careful in choosing an insurance company if you have to, but certainly DO NOT chose AIG. AIG are a bunch of rip-off merchants and SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TRADE.

DO NOT BUY INSURANCE FROM TRAVEL GUARD!! They are dishonest and will delay responding to your claim for months and, during that time, they will not respond to your Emails and phone calls. After delaying for months, they will send a long list of requirements for additional information (nearly all of which do not apply to your claim). They do that because they know most people will give up and stop pursuing reimbursement of the expenses incurred during their trip. Travel Guard is exactly like the fictitious insurance company "Great Benefits" in the Matt Damon movie named "Rain Maker" (NetFlix). A class action should be brought against Travel Guard and they should be put out of business.

This company will lie right up to the point of paying a claim...then they'll deny it. Be sure to read the reviews here and then compare them to the fake 5 star reviews on Travel Guard's own website. This was my first time buying travel insurance and it will certainly be my last. My interview schedule was changed by my potential employer, causing me to miss my flight. Apparently that isn't covered by Travel Guard but they couldn't just tell me that outright, they had to pretend to be processing the claim for 21 days! (Despite the fact that they had sent me an email saying it would be proceed in 10-15 days.) In the meantime my travel reimbursement from the potential employer was hung up, waiting for the claim decision. What a joke.

We were traveling to Honduras for a mission trip. We purchased travel insurance through our travel agent and it was Travel Guard. On the day of our return flight our flight was cancelled by American Airlines due to fuel farm fires in Miami. We were basically stranded in Tegucigalpa Honduras with nowhere to stay. American Airlines told us "We're sorry, it's not our problem". Three days later American told us we had been rescheduled to fly out the next day. A few hours later they told us that our new flight had been cancelled and it may be a couple weeks before we could get out. We contacted Travel Guard and they told us to go ahead and purchase tickets through a different airline so we could get home and they would reimburse us the cost.
We contacted Delta and it cost $10,000 to purchase the necessary tickets. Once we returned to the US we filed a claim with Travel Guard and they denied the claim. They said that the person with their company that we spoke to didn't have the authority to authorize us purchasing the tickets because we didn't have a real emergency. I asked them what would constitute an emergency and they simply said ours wasn't. Since we put this charge on one of our mission teams credit card the church we attended wrote the $10,000 to pay it off. I would have gone straight to the news with this horrible service but I didn't want to discourage people from going on mission trips. I am in disbelief that a company can conduct their business in this fashion and stay in business. I keep hoping that someday they will make it right and pay back our church the $10,000 they should have covered.

We booked our airline tickets via Mastercard and so automatically were 'covered' with AIG travel cover. Booked our tickets in February and flew overseas in September. 3 days prior to departure I had a minor pain in one of my molars, dentist prescribed antibiotics and advised I would be fine in a couple of days. Two days into our trip, I had to have an emergency extraction as the infection escalated. I couldn't even open my mouth to eat for a week. All I claimed was the $250 cost to remove the tooth, so $50 after excess. AIG then tell me the tooth was pre-existing as it started just before I left.
I reviewed the policy and it turns out that for the 6 months PRIOR to you taking out the policy, ANY condition whether diagnosed or not, if you knew about it, until you depart is not covered without AIG's written approval. That mean effectively you'd need to document ANY issue you have from the moment you take out the policy and back date it 6 months and then immediately prior to departure, email them with your list and request approval. Farcical. I have emailed them twice requesting info around their internal complaints with zero reply. The alternative would have meant cancelling flights, hotels cars etc. which would have costs thousands. I will NEVER use AIG again and recommend you all avoid.

Due to extreme winds at JFK, our flight was cancelled a few hours before scheduled to depart. No alternate flight was available. We were unable to make the trip and had insured the hotel rooms with Travel Guard through Expedia.com. I provided the cancellation notice, hotel receipt, and official weather details for the date of the flight. We had to cancel our hotel, flights and scuba trip to Florida because of hurricane Dorian. It made it impossible to scuba dive as the water was too dangerous to be in, even though the hurricane only went up the east side on the ocean. I provided proof that our scuba trip was cancelled, as well as our hotel and flights, with no reimbursements or credits from any of the airlines or hotel. It’s been over 10 weeks and nobody will get back to me. Every time I call, my claims adjuster is either busy or has left for the day. It states specifically in our policy that we are covered for events such as a hurricane. This company is the worst for getting back to you or covering what you paid for them to cover. It’s fraud to take our money and then not follow through and reimburse us for our trip that was cancelled due to a HURRICANE!!

I recently booked a flight and purchased the insurance. A change in the meeting itinerary required me to change dates and I attempted to file a claim with Travel Guard and was referred to policy terms and conditions. This insurance is a total scam - only medical emergencies with a doctor's report will trigger re-imbursement. Do not purchase this product to protect for changing travel plans - it's a total rip off. The fine print will inform you that no re-imbursement will be made due to: travel arrangements canceled by airline/cruise etc. Any change made by the traveler (for any reason), any business or contractual obligations of the insured, failure of travel agency, common carrier or group to provide agreed upon travel arrangements - So - if you plan on dying and want your estate paid back, there is no reason to purchase this add on. It's a roughly 25% charge that you have no chance of claiming benefits.

WARNING!!! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!! I bought airline tickets for my daughter through Spirit Airlines that were non-refundable. This was to come home to avoid Hurricane Dorian. I purchased the insurance at the same time that I purchased the airline ticket, since it was non-refundable. Needless to say, the flight was cancelled and I had to find her another flight with a different airline home. I submitted a claim and sent every piece of information that was needed to process the claim. After two months, I finally get an email. Claim was denied because flight was cancelled before insurance went in to affect (midnight that night). What??? Never heard of such a thing. So I am out $230 and will NEVER purchase their insurance for anything or travel with anyone that offers this insurance.

I recently purchased a hotel room in Spain, due the civil unrest in Barcelona at that time, I thought it might be a good idea if I purchased the cancellation insurance for $16.00. And so as it turned out my plans had to change and I had to rebook (a side note: EXPEDIA.COM was absolutely useless in assisting to change the dates because it was a non refundable purchase). When I contacted this insurance company, I was shocked at the "hoops" I was being asked to jump through to collect on the $120.00. They were asking for newspaper articles on the protests in Barcelona, Emails between me and Expedia, proof I had tried to cancel or change. The agent said "their insurance adjuster wasn't going to do it for me". So people do your homework, this company will make it not worth your while to try and collect on the policy....it ain't worth it!!!. Again, Expedia is about as bad with customer service.

This company deserves 0 stars. I did my due diligence and called BEFORE booking a hotel room when my flight was cancelled. I was given incorrect information that a hotel would be covered. I booked the hotel only to have the rep call me back and tell me it was NOT a covered benefit. I noted all of this in my claim and they still only reimbursed $100 for a $300/night hotel room (there was nothing cheaper due to multiple airline cancellations). It took 3 MONTHS to get a supervisor to call me only to say “well you were given some correct information about the daily limit” and “we can’t do anything else as we already reimbursed you up to the policy limit.” No- it’s not that you can’t do anything, you WON’T do anything. This company is worthless and I would suggest you look elsewhere for insurance. The $100 bucks they reimbursed is not worth the 4 month headache of dealing with their piss poor customer service.

We purchased tickets while in the Mayo Clinic area for flights to go home from the area 12 days later. It is being held against us that we knew of the preexisting condition when we bought the tickets. Of course, we knew, but not for 12 days later! My husband was released from hospital and we were unable to travel for 3 days. We flew to our daughter's home and then were to fly back to Mayo for a procedure, then these tickets were purchased to go on home. We were unable to go home... Both of us were too sick, one way or the other. The form they sent us for the doctor to fill out was for the day BEFORE we bought the tickets. He filled it out accordingly. So they say we had a preexisting condition!!! Our actual travel date was to be the 12th, not the 1st!!! Crooks, that's what they are!!! Obviously, others have similar experiences and so they rate a one star with LOTS of people who take the time to warn other buyers!

Where do I even start... For starters, I have never been more dissatisfied with any company's customer service. When I filed a claim on August 13th, I was assured a response within 10-15 days (let's just say I had to contact AIG well over a month later to even have a claims adjustor review my claim). It is now October 21st and I have yet to receive a savory resolution to my well-overdue claim. The protection plan I purchased assured reimbursement of the Insured in the event of trip cancellation due to unforeseen “Sickness or Injury of a Family Member not traveling with the Insured.” When my grandmother had a stroke, AIG conveniently ignored the terms of its protection plan which I made the unfortunate mistake of purchasing. They are AWFUL at communicating and will NOT review any email correspondences until you call to follow-up and ask if they've received your correspondence. The adjustors are BEYOND unprofessional and rude.
PLEASE do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on this scam of a company. I cannot even fathom how a legitimate, unforeseen illness (WITH an attending physician's statement to prove its legitimacy) can be outright ignored. To Jamie ** and all of the other useless claims adjustors which I had the unfortunate pleasure of encountering, I sincerely hope you realize the angst you cause your undeserving customers as a result of your unprofessionalism and utter inability to comply with the terms of the protection plans that you sell. I bought the Travel Guard insurance recommended on Expedia for flight to a wedding. On the way back, we had to change the flight because one of us got sick. I tried to file a claim later; apparently you need a doctor's note with official diagnosis??? What the heck? It's really not necessary to go to a doctor for a stomach virus, and the cost of the doctor visit makes the travel insurance not even worth it. So, AIG didn't honor the claim because we didn't have an official medical diagnosis. It's just one of those "gotchas" where you think you bought something helpful, and it turns out it's not actually helpful at all unless the situation is really extreme. Just make sure you read the policy carefully and understand what you're going to need to go through and all the paperwork you'll need to provide in order to actually file a claim - in many cases it's probably not even worth the hassle.

Obviously after our family tragedy, I had to cancel the trip. Ms. ** the adjuster told me to get some paperwork from a counselor. I bought 4 tickets through Orbitz back in March of 2019 to travel to Mexico in July 2019. I bought insurance like I always do because I am active duty military, so, if for some reason I am not able to make my trip due to military training or something else, then I just cancel. I only cancelled a flight once before but sure I was happy to get my money back, which by the way, it was not insured through Travel Guard. This time, I did not think I had to cancel my flight but sure enough, almost two months after I booked my flight I received orders to go to Korea in June so, I had to cancel my flight.
I called Orbitz first to cancel and they said they were not able to cancel the flight, they told me to call Travel Guard. Sure I did and they recommended me to file my claim online because it was easier. I went online, downloaded the forms and sent them back with my military orders showing my report date and everything I though would be helpful to claim my money back.
I waited and waited and did not received any response via email. About three months after I went on the website to find out that my case was closed. I called them and they later sent me an email saying that military reasons were not covered in their policy. The only reasonable way for them to give you your money back is if you or someone travelling with you gets really sick or die, so, I guess only if you are planning on dying before your flight then you should get insurance. I am very disappointed with Orbitz, Travel Guard and Interjet. No one from these companies have done a single thing to help me either reimburse or at least give me a credit for my loss. I loss over 1500 dollars in a trip I was never able to do.
What is the point of buying insurance then? Beware of insurance companies, they make very easy money at the expenses of people that put their faith on them. It's been almost half a year of me trying to get my money back or part of it without any success not to mention that most of the time I make phone calls to Orbitz, the wait on the line is long, and then when you finally make it through, I am on the phone with a representative with a very heavy accent pretending to help me in average for two hours. Claiming you are a travel insurance company 24/7/365 and marketing yourselves as a company that insures travel, should be just that. Insuring ALL travel. I find it humiliating and unreasonable to have to submit a medical diagnosis explaining that I had an annual exam come back with a possible scare for cervical cancer. If I buy insurance, you (as the insurance agent), should stand by the cancellation, regardless of the reason. Charge a fee if you must, for insufficient "reason"....but pay your clients their cost. That's why they purchased your insurance.
I feel like it's a scam. So really the only reason to purchase insurance at all, rather than just work through the airlines, is if you get sick, die, or have some kind of natural disaster. People have to change plans sometimes and should not be punished for having to do so. You need to work on that. A "fine" is sufficient when people change plans.
As for me, I would have MUCH preferred my trip to NYC, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Governor's Island, Philadelphia and a week with friends, vs. more tests for a medical reason I now have to share with a company that I don't even know is allowed it through HIPAA. Tell me why anyone would bother to PAY to buy travel insurance in case their plans change, if their plans change and you do not stand up to your end of the bargain. You should not have to be sick or dying or in a natural disaster to change your plans. That's WHY we buy travel insurance. If you say you are a travel insurance agent, then live up to that. Even though now that rental company wants about $300 from us, AIG is sending a check for 202. It's very frustrating.

I bought the Travel Guard Gold Policy insurance for my trip. It has a $500 coverage on personal electronics equipment. During my trip, I have an unfortunate accident and dropped my camera and broke it. I filed a claim in June after I got back from the trip with all the documents they asked for, including my original receipt for the camera and the repair estimate from a camera shop which indicate it can not be repaired and the camera cost is $500.
Up until now more than 3 months later, the status of my claim is under review. I called them several times and they gave the same answer, that the claim is under review. I think Travel Guard tactics to denied insurance claims is just to to ignore the claim, let it sit there with the status "under review" until the customer tired of calling them back. That is a very bad way of doing business. Never again I will buy travel insurance from Travel Guard, what good of a Insurance or why buy this insurance from Travel Guard when you can not use it.

I was led to believe that a trip that needed to be rebooked due to a passport issue could be rebooked without a problem. That was incorrect. However, what made the situation even worse was that after speaking to multiple representatives from the company, no one mentioned that this was a possibility when I repurchased a second policy for the rebooked trip. I was initially happy with the service I received while at the airport explaining to a representative that I was unable to board my flight. That quickly changed after receiving an email upon return from the rebooked trip that I would not be reimbursed for the rebooking of my trip through my travel company or the airline. That savings would have covered the cost of my insurance. Next time, no insurance! I would have saved money!

EMERGENCY EVACUATION $50000.00 Per Insured
FLIGHT ACCIDENT INSURANCE $50000.00 Per Insured

TRAVEL MEDICAL ASSISTANCE Included Per Insured
TRIP CANCELLATION 100% Trip Cost Per Insured
TRIP INTERRUPTION 100% Trip Cost Per Insured

So I assumed 100% reimbursement for trip cancellation would apply. My wife who finished chemotherapy about 2 years before this flight wouldn't travel with us because she wasn't feeling well enough to travel. I cancelled just her flight. I thought "well at least I got that insurance and the ticket will be reimbursed". Travel Guard was awful to deal with and rejected my claim. The agent at Travel Guard that I spoke to was rude and devious.
Orbitz surprisingly did give me a full refund after I showed the Orbitz agent a screenshot of my "travel protection plan" and how trip cancellation (for whatever reason) would be refunded 100%. So I thank Orbitz but strongly discourage anyone from buying Travel Guard. I travel often and have purchased Travel Guard in the past; I will never purchase Travel Guard again ever and don't recommend it to anyone. If I could give 0 stars, I would.

I purchased trip insurance from Travel Guard AIG in January of 2019, for our vacation from July 13th to July 27th. The insurance was to cover the cost of the cabin we rented in the Adirondacks of New York. The renter is a private couple and we had rented from them for years. The reason for the insurance was that my sister who is 82 is not in the best of health and if it ended up that we could not go we would be covered for the cost of the rental. We did go but after three days my sister became very weak and was having trouble breathing. After consulting with the doctors, it was determined that we needed to end our vacation and return to Rochester where my sister could get a needed blood transfusion. Seemed simple enough to me and I filed a claim for interrupted vacation under the Travel Guard Policy.
After filing the claim, I heard nothing for three weeks. I then called their customer service department and the representative started asking me for documents such as airline ticket stubs, booking documents, etc. I explained to her that we didn't fly anywhere and this was just a private cabin rental. She said she would pass it on to the adjuster. I waited 2 more weeks and called again and they are still wanting booking documents etc that have never existed. I sent an email to the attention of the adjuster and still have heard nothing. If you are going on vacation which is not booked thru a travel agent or a cruise line, with all the associated documents, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS INSURANCE.
I have provided copies of my cancelled checks to the cabin owner and the filled out medical form they provided. They cannot deal with a verbal agreement like the one I have had with the cabin owner. I would think it would be obvious that someone renting out their cabin would not provide a refund if you left early. These cabins are rented by the week and cannot be rebooked on short notice. However without booking and refund documentation AIG Travel Guard is just sitting on this, and at this point I don't expect to hear from them. M. **

Our carry-on luggage was stolen in the Rome Airport (not a friendly place) In our carry-on we had our passports, jewelry, books. (Read somewhere never to put your valuables in your checked luggage). Well I think all the crooks read that article too.
We knew that we had a cap of $750 for each of us on baggage and personal effects. Well first they have a $50 deductible, so it really is $700. If anything is over $150 you must have a receipt. Ok so do not take any of your jewelry that you got as a gift, passed down by your parents, etc. In other words don't bother taking out this insurance unless you want to take nothing with you. They offered my husband a little over $350 for his stolen Movado watch (vintage so no receipt, valued over $1000 by State Farm), laptop case, new passport (that was $150), headphones, & a book. Check your homeowner's policy for lost items, they are far fairer and easier to work with than AIG. We had an accident on the subway and a police report but they will not accept.
Under the section on Trip Delay states "if delayed 6 or more hours... due to unforeseen event such as lost or stolen passports" however they only reimburse our tase to embassy and cost of new passport. We had several problems with AIG Travel Guard. The problems included: misrepresentation of the policy, catch-22 within policy exclusions, and failure to distribute settlement despite clear liability. Misrepresentation of the Policy - When we purchased the policy through Expedia it was written as "100% Trip Cancellation". We believe the average person would interpret that to mean any trip cancellation would be covered. Unfortunately, that ended up not being the case.
Catch 22 - The policy was not only for cancellations. It would also cover any health related damages taking place during the trip. However, if we had traveled despite our physicians request our policy would have been void. As per section K of the Exclusions and Limitations - General Exclusions section "any Trip taken outside the advice of a Physician" would cause an exclusion of the claim. AIG requesting is that we ignore our physician's recommendations to not travel but if we do so our plan would no longer be valid.
Failure to Distribute Settlement - The policy states that benefits extend to: "(a) Sickness, Injury or death of an Insured, Family Member, Traveling Companion or Business Partner; 1) Sickness or Injury of an Insured, Traveling Companion or Family Member traveling with the Insured must be so disabling as to reasonably cause a Trip to be canceled or interrupted or which results in medically imposed restrictions as certified by a Physician at the time of Loss preventing your continued participation in the Trip"
Our doctor requested that we not take a trip due to complications of an abnormal pregnancy. All required forms were filled out including the doctor's request to not travel. However, because those complications were related to pregnancy and AIG deemed those complications as normal the claim was denied. However, had these same health issues been identified by the physician in writing omitting "pregnancy" the claim would clearly fall within the policy benefits. In conclusion, AIG Travel Guard is not operating in good faith by denying legitimate claims, enforcing contradictory exclusions, and misrepresenting the policy in advertising.

Prior to my trip to Peru in May, 2019 I paid $379 for the Travel Guard Silver Plan. When I returned I filed two fully-documented claims for small amounts adding up to less than $200. Both of my claims were denied. The first claim was for a hotel required due to a train strike that prevented me from reaching my destination in Peru. I had to pay for a second hotel on the same day. The second claim was for a missed airline due to a pre-arranged taxi not arriving at my hotel to pick me up. It seems as those this company will not pay a claim unless the specific reason for the claim is spelled out in the small print of their coverage document. It also took more than a month for my claim to be processed and denied.

Understandable, however, the underwriter said if I provided a letter from the nursing home with her date of admittance and diagnosis, she would refund my money. I thanked her for being willing to do that for me and went through more brain damage and the 2 wks more just to have them deny it anyway.
I was understandably upset that she dangled a carrot in front of my nose and disappointed me twice. It was totally unnecessary and just mean. Get a magnifying glass to read every word, because MOST items that will happen to force you to cancel your flight are not covered unless it is a death and/or dismemberment. Usually the airline is nice enough to give you a refund anyway in those extreme circumstances. I recently booked a trip to Mexico and on our way home I specifically made sure we had a 2 hour delay to make our next flight. I booked my trip through Expedia and they offered travel insurance by AIG. According to the policy trip delay was covered. Reading further it States any Carrier that causes a 12 hour delay would be covered. Well they denied my claim. Coming home on American Airlines we left 46 minutes late from Cancun but as we all know pilots can make up some time and we arrived only 17 minutes late. Unfortunately there were at least 4 other airplanes internationally arriving too. We were tied up in customs for 2 hours because all these planes arrived at the same time.
I asked two times if there was any way we could be pushed through due to our connecting flight. Unfortunately customs could care less at Chicago O'Hare. I was told that American Airlines could put us on another flight no worries. Well they couldn't put us on another flight until the next day. So here we are in shorts and flip flops 32゚ looking for a place to stay. Although inconvenienced (missing work and school the following day), I felt confident that the travel insurance would make up for it financially. After all the plane was late causing a delay in customs, and since it was over 12 hours until we could take another flight we were meeting policy guidelines. WRONG! FIRST, they tell me they're not going to cover it. Stating that there was no 12 hour delay in carrier service.
When I explained to them that my plane was late causing us to be delayed in customs therefore missing my flight and not getting another flight for 12 hours the agent sends me a letter back stating our flight arrived on time so there was no delay. LIES! I was on it I should know! After calling American Airlines and also finding information online and sending her a photo shot of the exact time the flight left late and arrived late... She tells me customs is not their problem sorry. She goes on to tell me that the flight coming in had to be 12 hours late....REALLY? I just wish somebody would fight for the little guy once in a while. And I would like to get this out there so other people don't waste their money and buy travel insurance which is just pretty much a big scam from this company anyways. I submitted all required documents, received an email that it was received and waited for a phone call. During the 4 weeks of waiting, when I called I received professionalism and courtesy each time. I was never contacted but I checked the page often. At the end of the 4 weeks I received an email that was claim was approved for the full amount and 3 days later I had the check in hand. We put our entire bit of savings into our honeymoon, got the travel insurance, had to cancel only to be told we cannot get a refund unless I had a heart condition or essentially a life threatening condition. I advised them I cannot travel due to bed rest per doctors orders for my pregnancy and they said that wasn't good enough. So now we don't get a honeymoon.

Their website tells you that you will be contacted by them to discuss your claim... not. I heard nothing until my status changed to “closed” on their website 3 weeks after filing and getting them the required information. I purchased a ticket online. It clearly said refundable. It gave me an option where purchasing insurance not only made it refundable but negated the cancellation fee. The selling point was that the insurance was less than the cancellation fee, so it was a smart purchase as a consumer. The ticket was not refunded by the ticketing company or insurance. Basically I paid for insurance for nothing. It's 2019 and companies shouldn't be able to scam people so easily due to fine print that doesn't make any sense.
Tolerating companies to take advantage of consumers like this is ruining our society and causing direct problems. I have higher education and it was still hard for me to tell this company was scamming me. This is NOT OK and it's years past the time that something should have been done to protect the average American citizen from being scammed and taken advantage of by big companies. I only wanted one ticket refunded minus fees or insurance policy cost.

If there was a 0 I would review 0. I understand insurance well, and understand that sometimes insurance doesn't cover certain events. I'm at a loss for the benefit of TravelGuard travel insurance. I purchased Travelguard through the Expedia website upon being prompted at checkout. Given that I was traveling to a third world country I thought it would be prudent to have certain coverages. Upon Haiti entering into civil unrest, riots, and violence the state department issued a "no travel" warning and extracted all of its personnel. Airport access was blocked by burning cars and violent protest. This is AIG's idea of travel insurance cancellation is not a covered event.
Nor is an earthquake, flood, fire, volcano, hurricane, etc. They will however allow for cancellation if my home (3000 miles away) is uninhabitable, not the country I am actually in, just the one I left? Furthermore, they offer a 100% money back guarantee if you are not satisfied. However, that guarantee is only valid for 15 days after purchase. Given the speed at which they review claims, the guarantee period has long passed by the time you can decide if you are completely satisfied. So now limited funds to go back to Haiti to finish work for orphans... Well done AIG. Well done. Enjoy that ivory tower.

AIG Travel Insurance is a scam. I purchased the insurance as part of my trip from Expedia. When you purchase insurance, it's simply a checkbox at the end of the checkout page. My hotel was from January 1st-January 3rd 2019. I cancelled on 12/29/2018 due to a back injury - my doctor advised me not travel as I was unable to move or sit properly (6 hour flight). I uploaded the doctor form.
I filed my claim through AIG and they said my coverage period was from November 27th - December 1st. They are saying my coverage period ended a full month before my hotel reservation - a coverage period which I DON'T GET TO DECIDE. They see the hotel booking, but somehow think this is still the correct coverage. The claims adjuster was completely incompetent and took over a week to respond to simple emails and the phone reps are not equipped to properly address or escalate the issue. When they would try to reach my claims adjuster, she was never at her desk and would never call back. I've attached *some* images from our interaction (I'm not going to share my doctors form, and there are about 10 emails).
Luckily after sharing this email chain with Expedia and the hotel they issued me a refund. Additionally I had purchased travel protection through the airline, and three other hotels I was staying at and they had no issue refunding me timely. Please stay away from AIG Travel. They are incompetent and are somehow basically running a scam. When you purchase travel insurance through them, the coverage period is not for your exact hotel/airline booking - but a time period which they decide and doesn't necessarily make any sense. When you try to clarify and get it fixed, they are unable to work with you or willing to look into what went wrong.
I'm sure there is something technically wrong with their system and some sort of SISS process they are running, but if they ignore it, it will not get fixed and more people will be the victim of it - and AIG will profit off it. I advise anyone who has something similar happen to them to file a claim through your state's department of financial services.

Finally the airlines canceled the flight - and didn't have another for 2-3 more days! Immediately phone Travel Guard - who give me an "incident" number to refer to later, then they assisted in identifying a flight later that day with another airline. Didn't hear anything back after a good while, so I phoned them - was told "the check's in the mail"!
Finally received the check - and found that they refunded me ONLY the amount of the two meals! What about the $1,100 of unexpected expense (airfare) that I incurred!?! I immediately contacted Travel Guard - who sent me a message that I would be contacted. I waited a month - nothing. I sent an email asking what was going on. Waited a couple of weeks - nothing. "The purpose of this letter is to advise you of our position with respect to coverage for the above referenced claim. We value you as a customer and appreciate your business; however, we must inform you that there is no coverage under the policy for the claim presented. According to the information provided, you filed a claim because your trip was cancelled due to a Normal Pregnancy. Based on the information received your cancellation was due to the threat of Zika Virus. Please be aware that a cancellation due to the concerns for a potential illness being acquired during the trip is not a specified reason under the Plan that would make one eligible for Trip Cancellation Benefits. While we do understand your concerns regarding the Zika virus which led to your decision to cancel your scheduled trip, these circumstances are not one of the specified reasons under this travel protection plan for eligibility of reimbursement.
Because the pregnancy does not fall within the scope of a Complication of Pregnancy, as defined by the policy, we have determined that the above exclusion is applicable, and thus, we are unable to extend payment on your claim. So I called and tried to reason with them. The agent rudely said, “being pregnant is not reason enough to cancel our trip and that’s in our policy”. Too bad there's not a negative star rating. DO NOT EVER buy travel insurance with AIG/Travel Guard - United Airlines should kick these scammers to the curb. I purchased AIG/Travel Guard travel insurance offered on the United Airlines site with my one-way ticket from Boston to Los Angeles on 11/17/18. Due to a family illness I was forced to change - NOT cancel - my departure date. Same flight, but departing just two days later. United charged me a change (not cancellation) fee of $200, and an airfare difference of $95, telling me that normally they would waive the change fee as a courtesy, but since I had purchased travel insurance they had to charge both, and that they would be refunded. Dream on, United.
After submitting all medical documentation and airline invoices, Travel Guard only covered the $200 change fee as a "trip cancellation benefit" - even though the trip was NOT cancelled - my ticket with the new departure date had the same United confirmation number, and my receipt clearly lists it as a "change fee." Travel Guard refused to pay the fare increase, which is actually covered under "Trip Interruption Benefits" as an "increase in transportation expense[s]."
The reason? AIG's claims adjuster claimed that was because I had a one-way ticket - even though there's nothing in the insurance policy that states that one-way tickets are subject to lesser or limited coverage than round-trip ones, regardless of whether the trip is cancelled or interrupted. There's actually nothing in the policy that mentions one-way tickets at all (other than the fact that coverage ends at the destination). Needless to say, I've filed a complaint with the MA insurance commissioner - this is fraud, and they don't even care that it's so blatant.

I then bought over the counter medications to self-treat, therefore did not go to the hospital or speak to a doctor. I felt better a couple of days later, then I filed a claim for my ticket purchase to be refunded. Days later my claim was denied. Reason for denial being "You have to get a physician's note or speak to a doctor before we can approve your claim."
I have never heard of this absurd reason before and I know it's a way of not reimbursing me for my ticket. What about people who don't have health insurance or Primary care doctor? This AIG company is a FRAUD and SCAM innocent and hard-working people. Please, I need help to get my money back! I worked so hard for the money and it only took an instant for AIG to rob me of my hard earned money. I will also advise anyone looking for Flight insurance to avoid AIG, they are a scam insurance company, they should be investigated and shut down.

THIS AIG TRAVEL GUARD INSURANCE IS A SCAM! if you buy it, while booking a trip via a travel site, AIG makes look like you will get a full refund if for any reason, if you have to cancel your trip. THIS IS NOT THE CASE! I had to cancel my trip, and filed a claim, which was denied. Reason: Because my reason to cancel the trip does not fall in their Policy Perils. But, wait, I was NOT provided these Perils at the TIME OF PURCHASE! But, AIG continues to say they did provided them to me. All I got from the beginning was an email receipt, with instructions to file a claim if I need to. I have rebutted the claim, complained with BBB and the Insurance Commission in my state, and NOTHING gets resolved! AIG Travel Guard continues to "Play" the "Insurance Gimmicks" with my dispute.
What they allegedly claim they sent to me as a response to this case, is the same original denial verbiage verbatim to my claim I have received over and over! AIG Travel not only responded the same way to the BBB complaint, but also to my state Insurance Commission, to whom I also have filed a complaint with. Again, the issue: AIG Travel did not provide me with details of their Policy Perils at the time of purchase of the airline ticket. ONLY, after I made the purchase, I was sent a receipt email which have links to file a claim if necessary in case of a flight cancellation.
AIG Travel has never ACKNOWLEDGED their DECEPTIVE PRACTICE, and naturally, they never will. As a consumer, I have been ripped off by the GIANT Insurance Corporation AIG, as they have done in the past, just looked up their history. I'm not the ONLY consumer that has had this experience with AIG Travel Guard. As a Federal employee, veteran and consumer, I will continue to push to EXPOSE AIG Travel Guard deceptive practices. I already understand that I will never see my claim paid, or resolved by AIG Travel, but at least I will try to educate other consumers, that may want to purchase this WORTHLESS INSURANCE, not to waste their monies by basically giving it away to AIG Travel Guard!

All, do yourself a huge favor and don't bother purchasing a policy from AIG or TravelGuard. In the event you have put a claim in, they will deny it - by quoting small print in regard the point you are seeking reimbursement on. Let me share. Norwegian canceled several routes this November onwards, and I was affected. This group told me to go to the airline for reimbursement, they were shocked I would seek to open a claim with them, but since I had bought a policy including trip cancellation, I was making a claims. The airline reimbursed, but would not cover the cost of the hotel I had booked that was non refundable.
Several weeks later, the adjuster informs me that my claim is being denied - my trip was cancelled, and yet the exact reason is not called out in their small print (when did an airline cancel routes as normal practice?) and they refused, point blank to reimburse the hotel cost. Apparently, I am not covered. Go figure - a waste of money, and marketing misrepresentation of their policy. Go elsewhere, this company's attitude and service to their customers is poor.

This insurance is definitely not worth the money. My trip to Africa was delayed and I lost approximately $1000 on activities and hotel because of the delay. They refused to reimburse me for those losses because activities/hotels are not covered by their insurance policy. Is that not the point of travel insurance? I would never recommend this insurance company to anyone.

On the middle of a transatlantic cruise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, my wife suddenly became ill. It’s a worst case scenario, 1000s of miles from the nearest port and only option is a clinic on the ship. She was rushed to the ship's doctor and they took vitals and did lab tests. In the meantime, I used the ship-to-shore radio to call AIG very early in the morning. The first person took my information and placed me on hold to speak to a specialist. Because it costs $5 a minute, I hung up after a couple of minutes. I figured it would be better to contact them later when it wasn’t insanely expensive to call.
AIG reached out to me immediately with multiple emails offering their assistance with medical monitoring, research, medical referrals, and travel. In addition, all the claims forms were mailed and waiting for us when we arrived. AIG provided a link informing me the status of the claim. They give me the direct telephone number of the person handling the claim. After a couple of weeks, I called this person asking if she needed more information to process the claim. Five minutes later, she call me and said she was approving my entire claim. You hope you don’t need it but this is absolutely the best travel insurance. You are dealing with professionals that are focused on dealing with your medical emergency and not denying your claim.

I wish I had read review before purchasing AIG Flight Insurance. It is obviously a scam. It was advertised on Expedia stating that in terms of cancellation, I would be reimbursed fully. I paid 180 dollars for the insurance and I fell sick at the airport on the day of departure and I had to cancel the trip. AIG has refused to reimbursed me stating that the policy does not affect sickness arising from pregnancy (because I am pregnant). Even though I sent my doctors report, stating I was advised to cancel trip due to high-risk pregnancy. I would not advise anybody to pay for this, they would find every means to deny your claim.

My wife and I booked a trekking trip to Mount Everest in Nepal. We bought Travel Guard insurance. While there, we had two issues arise. The first was lost luggage which contained needed trekking gear. Despite a time difference of more than 10 hours, we were able to get a rep on the phone immediately who walked us through our options (which included the option of them covering the purchase of new gear). The luggage issue corrected itself with the arrival of our bag the next day, but it was nice to know we had the green light to buy gear if needed.
The second issue was much more serious. At the highest elevation of our trek I developed severe altitude sickness and had to be evacuated by helicopter from a remote Himalayan location. I also had a hospital stay in Kathmandu. Again, I was able to immediately reach a representative who was reassuring me even as the helicopter was landing. I then had a medical representative contact me in the hospital to offer assistance. They even offered to help book new airline tickets if I was unfit to fly home.
Upon return home I had a packet waiting in my mailbox with step by step instructions for filing a claim. I mailed all documentation. One week later I went online and saw my claim process had started, and was given the name and number of my claims representative (first and last name). She was unavailable, but returned my call in a reasonable amount of time. She said there would be an update on my claim within three days. Three days later I received a check in the mail which covered 100% of my claim.
I've read many reviews complaining about coverage and "fine print." I fully read my coverage before purchasing the policy, and I found it to be pretty straightforward and easy to understand. I also found it to be a bargain when you compare the cost of the policy to the cost of a helicopter evacuation from Gorak Shep in the Everest region! I would absolutely recommend this company based on my experience from start to finish.

I booked a room for my clients and mind you they have the money to spend on a nice accommodations. They went for a small vacation and after spending over 1500.00 in hotel fees not including the insurance from AIG Travel Insurance and the food and beverage tabs, the hotel was booked with construction workers trying to help rebuild the coastal area. Not a problem. The problems was after traveling over 4 1/2 hours and being detoured and finally making it to the hotel they just wanted to get some dinner and go to bed. When they got ready for bed they heard a bunch of commotion from outside their room and the room beside them. They checked and it was several fights and drinking and someone had already called the police. They came. The place quieted down and shortly after that it started again.
They contacted the front desk and they said nothing could be done. What, What do you mean nothing could be done. These are construction workers working here to fix our towns. Annnddd. They paid for their rooms at full price with no discounts, not like the workers, which is not a problem mind you, but really. They tried to sleep but it continued on and on. And soon it was so bad that they could hear one cussing on his phone outside their door about him being in a gang and that they did not want to mess with him etc... The room next to them they could hear the fighting in as if it were coming through the wall on their heads.
My client has heart problems and had gotten away for the relaxation due to stress at home and wanted to have some time to find some peace and quiet and just unwind. This did not happen. They are an older couple and when they walked out they notice the guy who was on the phone outside their door had an ankle monitor on. They went back in their room and contacted me to try and find another room. They tried to get their money back due to not being able to sleep, being scared to death not knowing what was going to happen with the fighting and gang talking or if there was going to be a shooting or something. It cause my client to start having chest pains.
I tried everything to find a room for them that night and had no luck, but was able to find one in another town an hour away for the next day. So between her not sleeping and having to stay awake all night scared to death her chest pains got worse. She ended up at the hospital and was treated. They were able to make it to the next hotel and had no problems whatsoever and enjoyed the remaining of their vacation.
When we contacted AIG and explained what happened and in detail what all went on, their response was, "I am sorry, but this does not meet our protection plan." Really. Really. What part of protection did this not cover. My client suffered due to the negligence of the hotel and feared for their safety. They were going to go and sleep in their car, but due to not having a bathroom it was not visible. They lost out over 1500.00 plus the cost of the insurance that did not protect them, plus gas to travel another hour away plus another hotel fee for 6 days and a hospital visit. I am so disappointed with AIG and I would not ever use them again. I will look for any other kind of insurance company, but never AIG again. They really sucked.

I hate to be that person but I wish I could give this less than one star! This company is a SCAM and I would NOT recommend it to anyone. It's a complete waste of time, money and your sanity. The only way they refund you for anything is pretty much if you show documented proof that you or someone you're immediately related to you dies around your trip dates. Otherwise all they do is have customer service talk you around in circles essentially explaining to you in different ways how you're screwed. It's a waste of money and more trouble than it's worth. If you want your trip truly covered, do some research first and go with a legitimate company. This Travel Guard company is complete joke and now I'm out over $600 with no way to get new plane tickets to my sister's wedding.
The reason we needed to change flights was simply because we moved states and needed to fly out of a different airport. Easy enough, right? We were told that any travel changes or cancellations would be covered, no problem. So I called and they said that would be no problem, all I had to do was call the airline and make sure everything went through to them. The airline then told me that any changes have to be made through Travel Guard. So I called Travel Guard back and they told me that now they suddenly wouldn't be able to switch the flights because our reasons for switching weren't covered in the policy requirements -- we would have to cancel our flights through the airline and then submit a claim to see if we even could get a refund.
I looked over our policy and saw that "trip cancelation" was covered so I requested that our flights just be canceled altogether so we could book new flights out of a new airport. They then told me that that wouldn't be covered either because our reasons for wanting to cancel weren't covered under the policy requirements either. I asked if there was anything I could possibly do and they straight up told me, "No, I'm sorry." So thanks for nothing, Travel Guard!

I purchased two tickets for a round trip flight from Myrtle Beach to St Louis for a wedding on Sep 27-Oct 2 through Travelocity, and purchased trip insurance through their selected provider, AIG Insurance. Hurricane Florence hit North and South Carolina in early September, and while we fortunately had no initial damage, we live near the Intracoastal Waterway and about 10 days after the hurricane, flooding from rivers in North Carolina had reached record levels and thousands of homes in our area were flooded. On 9/26 the water had risen to reach the foundation of our house, was still rising, and we were subject to a mandatory evacuation order in our neighborhood for flooding danger.
We obviously cancelled our trip, and I filed a claim with AIG for what I assumed would be covered. I will be the first to admit that I never read the policy terms when purchasing the insurance, but would have assumed the policy covered cancellation when events outside of your control occur. In fact, I learned that the policy I purchased states that a valid reason for payout is if the insured's primary residence was made uninhabitable or INACCESSIBLE due to natural disaster. When I contacted the agent, they told me that since my house had not sustained damage (the water, thankfully, did not breach the foundation), it was not uninhabitable.
When I stated that we were under mandatory evacuation and therefore the house was INACCESSIBLE, they told me that mandatory evacuation was not covered by the policy. When I asked them to define, then, what INACCESSIBLE meant, they just continued to say mandatory evacuation was not covered. To me, this is unconscionable and an act of very bad faith. They never questioned the documentation I sent them showing the evacuation zones or the state of the house which was surrounded by flood waters, but continued to say that mandatory evacuation was not covered and was not what was meant by inaccessible. Although the total amount covered was only $541.20, it is extremely frustrating that I was denied coverage. I would also recommend to your readers that although the purchase price of travel insurance is relative low, to take a few minutes to read the policies and how restrictive they are relative to payout.

It turns out tripsta.com is out of business so I contacted airlines directly, they say they don't charge changing fee, they also can cancel the return trip but only Tripsta company can change return flight date.
I called AIG next, they say they don't cover my case due to there is no policy about a company is out of business, so they won't pay for the new ticket for the return flight. AIG also said the ticket claim is invalid because of my existing health condition, which is completely not making sense, I don't ask AIG to cover my doctor visits, I ask them to cover the return ticket because Tripsta is out of business and I can't use my money for the return flight.
