Kaiser's doctors and health practitioners give me the impression of having 0 interest in patients and just try to do as little as possible interaction with patients and treating patients. Kaiser pays the most and hence attracts these types who are motivated only by money. Those who must interact with patients are understaffed so they have a line of patients at any given time and do not have time to provide human interaction. I have had to resort to holistic herbal treatments and energy healing since switching to Kaiser. I avoid going to the doctor because I leave feeling so awful. Luckily I am from a country where health care is also exclusive to the wealthy and useless for everyone else, so we know how to treat most diseases with herbal medicines. I am horrified to imagine Americans without this background trusting their Kaiser doctors who I can tell do not at all, or do not have time to care.

I am trying to get a refill for some medication. The Kaiser pharmacy said it can take up to 5 business days get the refill. That's up to a week if it's not placed on a Monday. Crazy right? I tried to contact my doctor by email. The response I got was from her assistant telling me it can take up to 5 business days for her to respond to emails. Sigh. No help there. There is no way to call your Dr. office directly. So basically I'm screwed. I may go to urgent care as a last resort. What a waste of time resources.

I am having severe back pain since last February, God knows how many months it took Kaiser to schedule me to see Pain Management and physical therapy. Finally, they agreed base on my condition to do pain block and I have been waiting two weeks for them to call and schedule me for procedure. They called me this morning at 7:15 am and I missed the call and once I called back they told me I have to wait till next week. I am so pissed off. If you file complaints it takes them 3 months to respond and they send you bunch of papers which takes you hours to read… Horrible service. I can’t wait to reach 65 and get different health insurance and I am encouraging my husband and my sister both to leave Kaiser… they are worthless.

As a self-employed individual I have had insurance through Premera in 2020, Regence in 2021 and Kaiser in 2022. Kaiser was by far, the biggest mistake. Aside from catastrophic coverage which thankfully we did not need, I would accept Kaiser coverage for my family if it was given for free. I chose Kaiser because monthly premiums was slightly less expensive and I believed the combination of insurance and providers would turn out to be superior. I was wrong.
Kaiser's approach seems to be downgrade, delay and deny. Initial contacts may go through a web or phone consultation that is about as useful as self research using online sites like WebMD. Getting even simple prescriptions like a rash cream would be denied. My explanations that I have already tried self-researched and over-the-counter remedies is ignored. You must go through the Kaiser process at every step, even when you are happy to pay directly. The next step is typically the office visit with a general practitioner or PA. There is no luck going to straight to a specialist even when you are experienced and knowledgeable with a condition. You will wait to get these appointments unless Kaiser deems urgency.
The providers are fine, but the care is still general and if you will pay the deductible, suffer the condition and be delayed. This will often be another wasted appointment. You will not be able to bypass the system. Your experience, research and knowledge is meaningless as is the inconvenience, expense, time and suffering. I never made it to the specialist within the process. My attempts were denied or delayed. My child was unable to sleep properly for months or to use drugs recommended for days, not continual use. When I asked to go to specialists outside of Kaiser and pay completely out-of-pocket, it was denied. They put barriers to even working with outside providers.
I literally had to go to an outside provider, walk in to their office, explain and beg them to ignore my insurance, to provide service and charge me directly. Calling was not sufficient. When my child was eventually seen by a specialist outside Kaiser, they initially recommended a long regiment of antibiotics, since we had tried a standard regiment the year before. Kaiser denied all but over-the-counter and home remedies we were trying for years. They didn't care. Stay in the system. Outside information is not considered.
The outside specialist also recommended a further diagnostic should this not work. We did not want to wait or go through the roadblocks that Kaiser would undoubtedly put up and had the specialist perform the diagnostic immediately. As we expected, there was reason for the chronic problem and an easy solution. It took us at least six months, much effort, costs, sleepless nights and unneeded suffering of our child trying to Kaiser. A horrible value is an understatement. Thankfully we never needed urgent medical emergency coverage and I suppose that provides some value. Beyond that, I would accept Kaiser's coverage if it was offered free of charge. Do yourself a favor, pay more in premiums elsewhere.

I called for an appointment four months ago to reduce a medication I felt was causing anxiety attacks. The nurse on the phone insisted I go to ER to ensure I wasn't having a heart attack. I did and thankfully was not, but was told by the ER doc (outside of KP) to see a cardiologist without delay. KP insisted I see my regular doc (I just switched to KP two years ago) in order to get a referral to see a cardiologist despite my having been seen by an ER doc with all tests done at their insistence. First available appointment was a month away so I made the appointment. The morning of the appointment I get to the KP facility and am told my GP is out Sick. "Can I see another Doctor for a referral and just have the blood drawn for tests?" Nope. I make another appointment- first available is three weeks out. I am on the way to the appointment and get a phone call cancelling because my GP is *still* out Sick. No one else available? Nope.
I make another appointment with another KP doctor at another facility only a week out thanks to a cancelation- I get a phone call the morning of telling me the doctor won't do the paperwork I need because she isn't my GP. I MAKE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT (Each phone call to make an appointment takes minimum 40 minutes on Hold BTW). I manage to get a phone appointment another week later with yet another GP. This one says she's happy to get all the paperwork done - And does it over the phone sight unseen. (Bless her).
I finally get a phone call to schedule the Stress test I am told I need to do before the cardiologist can see me. First available is three weeks out. The morning of the test I get a phone call telling me they have to cancel, BECAUSE THE DOCTOR HAS CALLED IN SICK. I manage to reschedule in the phone call - FOR MORE THAN THREE WEEKS OUT. That's where it stands now. To save people the math, I am now more than four months since calling to change medication that the KP Nurse insisted could be a heart attack and sent me to ER - where the doctor said see a cardiologist without delay. Assuming the next appointment isn't cancelled (mind, I am 0 for 4 in actually seeing a doctor who will do anything), it will be five months before I even get the Stress test to then see a cardiologist sometime after that. I have a special needs child who will be 18 soon: with an intellectual disability/autism. I needed a VERY routine form filled in as I need to gain limited conservatorship (medical powers). It has a question where it asks if my child is capable of making informed medical decisions. Mind you this doctor chose to write a letter in lieu of the form. I explained to her that the form is a document that must be signed by her medical doctor and that the letter will not hold up. I know no one who has had this issue so I do know this is doctor specific. She had the audacity to call and say she won’t sign it because “I could sue her.” I asked for my child to be referred to someone who would. Many psychs in this department called me to say “Why won’t she do it? She is her doctor.”
I brought in all her latest assessments that prove she is unable to make her own medical decisions (This she knows because she did write the letter. She is not against it) but she did not sign the legal form. This form is 100% necessary and there is no “not filling it in.” Because of this my child’s medical care beyond 18 is up in the air. If you have a special needs child run far far away. No one waiting Kaiser has any idea on how to care for autistic children and now even adult!

I have been with Kaiser for years. I have always had a good experience until this year and it's more than 1 bad experience. In January my son had a Cat Scan for a medical issue. A cysts was found on an Organ. The Kaiser MD is the responsible Dr to report this to us and did not. Then again in May he had a Cat Scan again, and again the cysts was reported in the paperwork to the kaiser Dr. and again the same Dr failed to tell us. If I had not started reading all the hospital reports and lab work for other appointments I would not have known about it, and it does need to be seen to. The same Dr had 2 opportunities to look at his medical report correctly and didn't. This is just neglect. I filed a grievance with Kaiser in mid July and was told I would get a letter. I got no letter. I called back, they said they will resend. I got no letter. I sent an email to notify them that I would like to talk to someone about this, that no one has reached out to me.
The person that received that email just assigned a new case number and filed another grievance against that grievance. So I called and escalated to a manager, they sent an email to the case manager and the case manager's manager and told me they will call or reach out to me. It’s been over a week, no one has bothered to reach out.
In another incident, I just tried to get an appointment for my child but they are booked up at all facilities today, no appointments when I call at 7am. He needs to be seen today so I pay to go private outside of Kaiser. My son needed a prescription filled. I took the prescription to Kaiser and they refused to fill it because one of their Dr's didn't write it! But they take my monthly premium for prescription services! So now I have to pay 100% of the cost of the medicine- it makes no sense. They also canceled 2 appointments back to back the morning of the appointment with different Dr's and my son ended up in the emergency room. They really have gone down as a service provider.

I’m here unfortunately writing a review on Kaiser in Virginia. I’ve had one bad experience after another. I’m sorry to say this is the absolute worst insurance in the area. My son, with disabilities, could not get any services, and we were left to go out of network. Their mental health capabilities are atrocious. Beyond that their customer service is subpar. Please I know the price is right, but try to find another provider.

Kaiser Permanente has to be the worst insurance that has been my biggest displeasure of doing business with! I have had nothing but problems with them ever since I signed up in August 2021. First, let me start with my prescriptions. Transferring prescriptions from your old pharmacy to Kaiser’s mail order pharmacy is a joke! I called their mail order pharmacy and had to wait 45 minutes for someone to call me back because I didn’t have time to wait on hold. I had to babysit them for a month before they were finally transferred to AllianceRX. I was so frustrated that I had to get my former employer involved, and they were even getting frustrated.
Fast forward to March: I had trouble with their mobile application not letting me send e-mails to my doctor. I called technical support the first time, and they weren’t able to figure it out, so they escalated this issue to a “Tier 2” concern. I waited a week, and they still hadn’t fixed the issue, so I called back a second time. The woman on the other end told me I needed to call my doctor directly if I needed help, and she wouldn’t let me speak to anyone else, telling me they don’t take calls for Tier 2 concerns. So in other words, they are unable and unwilling to do their job, so I have to put up with the inconvenience! I called back again, and they raised my concern to a “Tier 2” again. Weeks passed, still no action.
I finally got my employer involved, who investigated the matter. They told me that Kaiser mentioned that since I switched to a PPO from an HMO, I wasn’t allowed access to e-mail my doctor since their database store information only for HMO patients. This makes zero sense because I had a PPO since August and I was able to use their e-mail in the app back in January! To top this all off, each time I seek care from them, I am told that I don’t have an active policy when this is clearly not the case. I highly recommend against doing business with this insurance company. They apparently care more about making a profit from their customers than they do providing the quality care they deserve!

After being on the phone for almost two hours speaking to about seven different representatives I still got nowhere, no one could help me. I pay $500 a month for the HSA flex choice plan and feel like because I am not using Kaiser doctors they are give me a hard way to go. If my employer offered anything else I would change ASAP. A total nightmare on every level. Weeks or months to get a basic appointment. Appointments must be made online or via the 1-800 call center, which is a joke. Every person you talk to tells you something different. There's zero accountability across the board. No one cares and it's glaringly obvious. Appointments are often canceled without warning hours before you're scheduled to arrive. A courtesy text message will be sent advising you to call the 800 number to re-sched.
Know going in that if you do call, it will likely take a good 45 minutes to an hour of being transferred to a number of absolutely useless phone operators. These people work either from home or in giant call centers that are nowhere near your providers location. Be prepared to give the same basic personal information dozens of times, regardless of you entering your info through the automated system at the beginning of your call. It's a miserable and frustrating process that is often stretched out over the course of two or three days. I've received better customer service at the DMV.
If you love wasting time and receiving mediocre care - then Kaiser is the place for you. The doctors are lousy if you ever get to actually see one. You will often be forced to take appointments with nurse practitioners rather than an actual doctor because of staff shortages. I'd leave a less than zero star rating if possible. Horrible.

I've been defaulted into Kaiser Insurance since that was the choice my parents made, however I'd like to point out that I spent so much money on appointments that were pointless or not helpful in the slightest. I've had my fair share of doctors here and I've only met one therapist who genuinely seemed like they cared about me back in 2018. Other than that it's just, "Oh, you think you have a problem? Let me gaslight you into thinking otherwise," that's how it feels at least ("You're just overreacting," That's something you talk to them about not me," "Only time will tell," etc).
I came in with a psychiatric emergency and doctors just glared over me just trying to figure out how to get me out of there the quickest. Doing ultrasounds and whatever to "satisfy" me then kicking me out the door asap. I was furious when they called me a couple hours later admitting to had glossed over something in my ultrasound to which they said to come back, and when I did they just again said, "Nope. Never mind. You're fine," teehee (keep in mind I have to pay a fee EVERY TIME I come in, so to have a pointless appointment is just SO FUN for me, a broke college student).
For YEARS I've been trying to get a diagnosis on my mental illness, been struggling with symptoms and I'm pretty darn sure I know what I have but whenever I try to talk to someone about it they say "make an appointment here, no you were suppose to make an appointment here, didn't you know that?" All coming from my doctor only to be rewarded with a, "Sorry. You called the wrong number. You're suppose to GO HERE INSTEAD."
I'm so tired of running around, I know what I struggle with and I know they can just write me one little note and I'll be on my merry way but no, "I can't declare what I have" because I'm not a professional, oh please you don't live in a constant state of pure lack of motivation, brink of tears for no ga damn reason or my favorite just straight up sleeping because I have nothing better to do than cry or stare at the ceiling, not like I have a ** ton of work I need/want to do, I'm just a lazy sack of crap isn't that right? I have to fall in line to whatever they tell me. Doesn't matter who tells me what. It's just a big roulette wheel of who will I "need" to talk to next and who are they gonna send me to. I just want help, and I feel like I'm never going to get it... I hate this place.

Kaiser has the worst health care and horrible billing. The doctors never have any answers and just seem to not care. The doctors have repeatedly let me down from not being able to diagnose my heart condition, to causing my miscarriage and now having no answers to my severe joint pain. I was also forced to see two unnecessary specialist before sending me to the one I requested and needed. They downplay every concern and brush you off unless you need surgery or are actively dying.
The nurse practitioner prescribed me a medication that most likely caused my miscarriage. Studies have shown a link to the relation and other countries don’t prescribe it to pregnant woman. Many OBs here won’t use it either. One week after taking it, I started to have miscarriage symptoms. I went to the ER and they said I was fine. Two days later I was worse and back in the ER. One week later I lost my baby at 18 weeks! Had I not been put on that medication or had been put on bed rest sooner, I’d probably be holding my baby.
On top of our loss we had to deal with their horrible billing. We kept getting multiple bills with different balances. After being sent three bills over the course of a month with different balances due each time, we called. The representative couldn’t even explain the bill or tell us what we really owed. They even randomly charged my credit card $477 and denied ever doing it, though it clearly went through on my statement of charges.
They have a ton of facilities but none that you can just get the simple things all done at once. I have to get X-rays at one place, get meds at another, see the eye doctor at another, and a regular check up at another. It’s ridiculous how much of a run around circus they have. As a kid I had kaiser through my father's insurance. It seemed great. Now it's a complete letdown with every experience medically and financially. Nightmare of a company!!!!

My husband's work switched him to a union position and we were forced to move from Regence BC/BS, which was a fantastic company in terms of helpfulness and coverage, to Kaiser Permanente, who was similar to a cult, only paying for Kaiser doctors, Kaiser prescriptions, Kaiser referrals etc. I lost my naturopathic doctor I had been seeing for years, as well as my endocrinologist, neither of which Kaiser would reimburse, and they immediately removed me from two of my medications saying they were too expensive. My blood sugars which were controlled and staying in the low 100's, have been in the 300's since they took over my care, my eyesight has become blurry, and I cannot focus at work.
This insurance company absolutely does not care. Their doctors have even attempted to write prescriptions for the 'non-covered' medications which the company denies the same day, and I have had to utilize urgent care multiple times and pay cash for everything to get what I need to stay alive and not be disabled (still cannot afford the medications that Regence had been paying for for years). I have never been so disappointed in a company and if you are someone with any kind of chronic health conditions, do whatever it takes to avoid this insurance company. Even with the intermittent fasting, keto dieting, and daily exercise, I'll be lucky to be alive in five years because of this forced change. I cannot overstate how upset I am at this company, and I hope and pray that we will be eligible for Regence again in the near future, or the damage being done will likely be irreversible.

I thought I was one of the few having major problems with Kaiser in Southern CA but obviously not because making an appointment with my doctor is impossible. I have complained many times directly to him about it, and he shrugs it off saying that's another dept. Well it's your clinic lol. Seems they have hired nothing but project mgrs and cost cutters because accessing any medical care is impossible. Who schedules a dr appt 4 months in advance for an illness?? The rude appt ctr has NO empathy for sick patients and told me to go to the hospital ER -- really? They refused outright to auth a cardiac test for artery blockage and I even offered to pay for it someplace else!
As other KP reviewers have stated, if you never get sick or are young this insurance HMO might work. But once you are over 50 or have a condition that needs to be monitored and you need actual medical expertise, in my real world experience KP can be fatal to your health. As an example, when labs are ordered the Dr never describes the lab tests or what they are for. And when the results come back (I can see them) but I have no idea what they mean individually or as a group of tests and my Dr (I have had 3 pcp's) have never ever once contacted me about the results. Is this really the medical "care" I am paying a lot of money for? Once reviewer also mentioned mental health svs, and without listing specifics here, I can confirm the Socal mental health svs are a disgrace. If you ever need this service, I would pay cash to someone your trust and not get involved with the KP bureaucracy to save your sanity!

I paid a Kaiser bill using my online bill pay through my bank. The check was supposed to be written for $41.70 and it was written for $4,001.70. I contacted Kaiser immediately to let them know of the error on 3/29/22. The check was cashed on 3/28/22. I had no recourse with the bank since it was a typo and not fraud, so they could not pull the money back. I contacted Patient Financial Services/Billing Inquiries and they could not find where the money was on 3/29/22. I had proof they cashed the check, but they could not find the credit on my account. I called back on 3/30/22 and spoke to Connie and she said she would find the money and call me back. She called me back on 4/1/22 and said the money was sent to the premium payment department because the dollar value was so large and they would issue me a refund as she verified that sum of money was not owed.
She said to call back in a few weeks if I have not received my check and provided a reference number. I called back on 4/27/22 and spoke to Danae and she stated that no refund was issued even though Connie requested it and the premium department sent my money back to patient financial services and it was sitting there as a credit to my account. I told her I don’t want a credit as I don’t owe that kind of money and I need my $4k back. She reissued the refund request and gave me yet another reference number. On 4/28/22, Aretha called me to say there was a problem issuing my refund due to problems from their Colorado facility but would not tell me what those issues were or when I could expect the refund. She stated her boss, Kimberly **, from Revenue Cycle would call me the next day to answer my questions. I never heard from her.
I called back on 5/2/22 and spoke to Desene and she told me she would get to the bottom of this. She did try her best, but the people in Revenue Cycle ignored her requests and no one will respond to me or tell me why they will not refund my money that is clearly due me. I have filed complaints with the GA Insurance Commissioner’s office as well as the Consumer Affairs Division from the GA Attorney General’s office. I gave Kaiser a month to respond as to why I don’t have a refund and I can’t get anyone to contact me. So, I filed my formal complaints and have taken to writing this review. This is now going into month three of not receiving my money and no explanation as to why.

I became a paying Kaiser member on 10/1/2021 and I’m writing this review on 5/20/2022 out of total frustration. From my personal experience, I find the claim that Kaiser is a premier senior care option, in California, truly baffling. In less than one year as a Kaiser member, almost 100% of the time, I haven’t been able to manage my medical care within the Kaiser system without resorting to using their “grievance” process. Starting with basic member services such as returning phone calls, or scheduling timely appointments and procedures, Kaiser falls unacceptably short on the satisfaction scale.
I cannot overstate how disappointing it was to learn that my Kaiser membership does not entitle me to reliable, respectful medical care. I have lost all confidence in Kaiser; as soon as I am able to limp through their chaotic system to conclude unfinished business related to medical services rendered at the main Fresno Kaiser facility, I will gladly partner with another senior medical care organization.

It's April. The employees are nice and cordial, and I have no doubt that the actual health care provided would be exceptional, if I could ever actually see an actual medical professional. On February 19th, he received a referral in the mail authorizing 8 nursing home visits starting February 13th through May 14, 2022. I have been a Kaiser member for many years, and can describe their services as going downhill very rapidly over the past few years. It used to be you could get an appointment with your own PC within a few weeks, but over the past few years that has incrementally gone up to several months. At the same time they have closed one of the neighborhood campuses in my area. Seems that cramming as many people into one or two facilities is the new strategy. As far as getting care for more serious concerns, forget it. Unless it is a literal life or death situation, you WILL be waiting numerous months for care or a procedure.
Case in point, I have a genetic predisposition to a certain type of cancer, which has claimed five family members. As such I am to have a diagnostic procedure done annually, but recently when I went to schedule one for the first time in three years, due to the pandemic, I was told that they have NO appointments as far out as they are booking and they do not have access to the calendar beyond that. No options given. Just, we don’t have any openings. Period. I petitioned to go out of network due to the potential severity of waiting and they said I have to file a formal complaint, which they then have 30 days to review, and they will then decide if my situation warrants allowing me to go out of network! So my advice to anyone considering Kaiser is this—if you are really healthy and just need catastrophic coverage then great, enroll. But if you have ANY ongoing health concerns you will be taking a huge risk with your life by enrolling with Kaiser.
Another example is my son, who got a terrible sinus infection and was literally turned away from the Kaiser ER not once but twice! They said it was a toothache, because the whole side of his face was swollen, so while my son was deathly ill we had to get him to a dentist who said his teeth were fine and that he needed to go to the ER. By then he had raging pneumonia and was hospitalized for nearly a month. And if that wasn’t enough, while in the hospital, he contracted MRSA and also his kidneys shut down from being administered two medications that were contraindicated.
The situation with my son was 100% avoidable. It was blatant incompetence. Period. And the doctor who last turned him away was oh so apologetic, for what that was worth. They nearly killed my son, and now I’m fighting for the services to ensure that I’m not carrying around a potentially deadly cancer. THIS is what you get with Kaiser. And all the while they’re super pleasant. So buyer beware. You’ve been forewarned.

I've had Kaiser for a many years here in Southern California and the treatment has been great. There a several facilities and urgent care easy access. My PCP is an internal Dr with 40 years experience at Kaiser. Very attentive. Focused on preventive testing. Kaiser is HMO and requires referrals if you wants to see specialist. If this is a problem then you are best getting a PPO plan. When you do get a referral it is a challenge getting someone with experience and education to your liking. Do your research. If not they will refer you to anyone. Learn how to work the system within Kaiser. You have options. If not you can always file a Grievance/Appeal.

Please do your research before signing up for Kaiser's Medicare Advantage plan. I've learned a lot in the past few years since I've been helping my parents manage their health. First, your primary care doctor will act as jack of all trades (dermatologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist...) doing everything possible to avoid sending you to a "specialist." Since very few diagnostic, blood, etc... tests are deemed "medically necessary" after a certain age, your doctor will refuse to order them as unnecessary. Instead, your doctor may provide diagnosis by treatment, prescribing some medication to see if you feel better, rather than running a few tests that may be safer for you. If you aren't a good advocate for yourself, you will receive palliative care.

I was with KaiserPerm of Washington for 3 years. After leaving Kaiser recently and getting cardiology tests that I’ve been requesting for two years and was refused I’ve learned that I have a serious heart condition that is requiring immediate surgery to prevent a heart attack. HMOs should be outlawed. Saving money by refusing medical care is unethical and should be illegal. I am so grateful that I left Kaiser soon enough to save my life. I’ve had several friends that were also refused essential medical care. One of them died as a result of Kaiser delaying critical care.

I know you are a big corporation and most likely won’t care about this but I want to make my experience with your company known. I’ve had Kaiser for almost 6 years. At first, when I was younger with no health issues…I thought it was great. Now that I am older and in need of more care, I am stunned at how horrible your company is. I should have known before signing up again how having an insurance company who owns the care is NOT a good mixture. With all my concerns, the doctors have shrugged me off as being “young and healthy” so of course it’s all in my head. I’m beginning to realize that your organization cares only about the bottom line and not actual care of the patient.
I have a primary doctor I’ve only seen twice in the last six years. To get an appointment within a reasonable time, it’s with another doctor who doesn’t know you or a NP. I waited 2 months to see a specialist who was 45 minutes away… Got there 12 minutes late because of traffic and never being at that big hospital before and was told the doctor most likely won’t see me because I wasn’t on time. (There was one person checking people in which made me 10 more minutes late). I stood my ground and said I’ll wait and then they called my name right away. Really… I wait 2 months for an appointment but get treated like trash because I’m 12 minutes late!!!!
I have been getting ocular headaches. I’ve seen 3 different Kaiser GP who won’t let me see a specialist. I was literally told by the last GP that the doctors get paid regardless of referrals and since I’m young and healthy…. I don’t need to see a specialist. Well thanks for that fact but since you all get paid regardless, let me see a specialist as my quality of life is declining! I recently got married and put my husband on my health insurance at work. I unfortunately signed up for another year of this horrible insurance/care. Please if you are reading this…. Kaiser is great when you’re young and healthy. After 30 or with medical issues… STAY AWAY. I will be making sure all my friends and family do.

I have had Kaiser for years, and I have had three very negative experiences so far. First, their phone lines have been consistently terrible. This week, I tried to book a Covid test, and ended up spending literally hours on hold. Usually when I get through to someone, they just send me to another phone number. This is the same kind of thing I expect from ATT, or McDonalds, or any other big, heartless corporation. But I didn't expect it from a healthcare provider. I was wrong.
Second, I had a therapist a Kaiser who was actually detrimental to my mental health. They refused to give me necessary documentation for my university, because they wanted me to quit marijuana. I never even said that my marijuana use was a problem, and it turned out that this therapist had absolutely no right to prevent me from obtaining my own documentation. I promptly fired them, and I am happy I did.
Third, I dropped a metal stool on my toe last year, leading to a fracture. When I went to Kaiser's ER, they put me in a wheelchair with my toe uncovered, bleeding onto the floor. They then proceeded to wheel me around the hospital, dripping blood all over the floors. I have spent thousands of dollars for these terrible services, which would have been both higher quality, and free, in my native UK. Why even pretend that there is a competitive marketplace in healthcare when big heartless corporations like Kaiser run the whole show?

2. Their office has not been updated since the 90s....gross and not sterile in appearance.
3. Purpose of the office visit was to refill ALL my medications. Then they don't send off all said medications, kept telling me it would be "in stock" the next day, the day after, then the following day....still waiting.
4. After inquiring why one medication was not refilled, I was told the Dr didn't "agree" with the medicine I have been prescribed for YEARS and would need to come back in AGAIN to discuss. What the frick????
5. No other pharmacy accepts this garbage insurance (Fred Meyers, Walgreens, or Bartell's). I can see why now.
I wouldn't use this crappy excuse for insurance if I had one hour to live. If you can, drop this insurance like you're holding a bag of cancer.

The waiting room had sick people standing along the walls and sitting on the gross floors. The bathroom floor was covered in water because of a leaking toilet, which I overheard patients reporting to staff twice, yet nothing was ever done about it. It was pretty ridiculous. OKAY, so I tried to set up an appointment with my family doctor, but she was out for more than a week, so I had to set up an appointment with another doctor, who did nothing but telling me it’s Lyme disease, which is a very severe skin condition. HOWEVER, my skin condition looked nothing like Lyme disease, and the doctor was smiling when he told me that it doesn’t matter since the prescribe medicine for all skin problems is the same. He didn’t even bother to take a closer look, so I was like ???!! Forgot to mention, KP currently does not allow any skin problems patient to see doctor in person unless you first meet up with a doctor online and that doctor allows you to go see in person.
THIS IS RIDICULOUS, HOW CAN ALL SKIN PROBLEM BE ACCURATELY IDENTIFIED ONLINE? In my case, the doctor obviously made a mistake and didn’t even bother to care. So I called the KP, and they set up an appointment with my family doctor after a week of my inquiry. But what was even more ridiculous was the fact they called me less than an hour before my appointment told me that the appointment is canceled since the doctor couldn’t make it. So I have to wait another week for next available appointment.
KP really doesn’t care their patients at all, doesn’t matter blister and scares developing all over your body every single day. Primary doctors practice cookbook medicine instead of INDIVIDUALIZED management to the patients. We experienced first-hand frustrations from my husband's primary care when the KP computer won't let him order a simple stool exam because my husband is less than 45 years old. My husband is being worked up for anemia and a basic stool exam for a young patient was impossible for the doctor to order.
For my case, I ended up going to another private specialist for my hormonal management. True enough, my Kaiser doctor was not aware that for women of childbearing age, TSH level should be <2.5. I didn't mind paying more for the Private Specialist. She explained every tests she ordered and the symptoms I was experiencing. So presently, I'm paying a private specialist to manage my endocrine problems on top of monthly Kaiser health insurance.
Overall, our experience with KP primary care was terrible. Doctors are overloaded with patients and paperworks. They type at their computers all throughout the consult. I was instead asked to see a doctor virtually who would order an x-ray and then review it. My x-ray was ordered and I ended up IN URGENT CARE to get it completed. It has now been 5 days since the x-ray and I am unable to get ahold of my doctor, an x-ray tech, or medical records to find out if it is broken. I was hung up on, told that I would definitely hear within a few hours three days ago, and then told that I could get a copy from medical records (false: they can't give me the x-ray for 5-10 business days) to have someone else read it. I've been a member of Kaiser Permanente for more than 25 years. When I enrolled, it was considered the best HMO available. It was much lower in cost than alternatives. I could use outside providers for very little more. The doctors were all splendid. I sent countless friends and clients to them. The cost skyrocketed over the years. In the year before the ACA was enacted, I was paying just under $800 monthly for increasingly poor care and ever-increasing co-pays and deductibles. Doctor turnover was (and remains) huge. Kaiser became the only ACA insurance available after a few years and the obviously enormous increase in patient load made things even worse. They are understaffed and getting an appointment, Covid or not, takes forever. Thankfully, I qualified for Medicare a few years ago and costs dropped significantly for me, but the care has continued to worsen.
The worst thing about Kaiser is the reversal of its original marketing message -- that patients should take an "active" role in their care. You were encouraged to do your own research and discuss your doctor's diagnosis, even challenging it. All of that is gone. I mean GONE. The doctors stereotypically regard themselves as infallible and resent any questioning of them. One of my doctors is so detached and irritable that they are like a cartoon parody that causes me to laugh for the wrong reasons. I've been refused essential tests that earlier doctors ordered every year because of a medical condition; it turned out the doctors had not even read my "chart" and didn't know about the condition.
Every time I've been assigned a new doctor, I go through a major struggle over a vital medication I've taken over 25 years. I have to battle them for weeks over it and it's obviously all because the drug was stupidly classified as a controlled substance and they don't want to be accused by the feds of over-prescribing it. I understand that, but how about checking my history and calling my original specialist? It always works out, but it's involved loud arguing and the implicit accusation that I'm abusing the drug.
Now, of course, we're all dealing with Covid. Friends with other insurance companies have received information about vaccines and have already been granted appointments. Kaiser? No way. Just the usual vague rhetoric. They push you away and tell you to contact your county health department. Seriously. I wish I had left Kaiser years ago, but there are advantages to it. A principal one is the way lab services, radiology, pharmacy, even some surgery are all done under the same roof. The same is available through Emory here in Atlanta and the rumor was that it would be allying with Kaiser. Unfortunately, it hasn't. There are of course devoted people at Kaiser. Here's one secret: Whenever possible, ask to see an NP or PA. They are ALWAYS more thorough than the MDs and actually listen to you.

They are a "non-profit" company, but their CEO makes $7000/hr, yep $7K/hr, $16M/yr. They will do everything in their power to keep you from receiving health care. Just spend a little more on the premiums and maybe get actual health care with ANY OTHER COMPANY.

Kaiser claims that they have a "team" approach to care. What they fail to mention is that no one coordinates the efforts, especially in serious cases that require the collaboration of many departments. The elderly terminally ill patient is forced to navigate the many individual departments with their separate advice nurses, social workers, doctors, pharmacies, etc. No one is overseeing the procedure for these people! The system is broken, operating solely for profit. Do not enter into their maze of confused, uncoordinated, impersonal care. Zoom for seniors is not thoughtful care! I implore you to seek a more compassionate, less corporate approach to health care. Kaiser puts profits above patients and their business plan is to cut more locations and staff. Buyer Beware!!!!

We were never that impressed with our highly overpriced premiums and a ridiculous deductible that isn't even covered by the HSA amount we are allowed to contribute. The last straw was letting us know we could no longer use our local pharmacy and had to go through the company store. Which on the first interaction with them, they got my prescription wrong and raised the dosage by 50% of what my doctor prescribed. I'm just worried about seniors or people who may not notice the change and take amounts of medications that may be harmful to them and calling the help line...don't get me started...We started out with Group Health because we want a local organization. We tried it for a year but we have switched to Regence now & we won't miss you. You have milked us dry. Now we're getting better coverage for less...Bye Felicia!

They will not answer the phone for my doctor simply to obtain a fax for referral. Once you realize that they don't respond to messages via email, you can queue up 14-down-the-line (30 minutes) for chat on their site under a specific category. Slow chats back and forth will end in them telling you to call their provider. Prepare to stay on the line for 45-minutes only to make a phone appointment 5-days later where they can then make an appointment for you. HOWEVER, they cannot. That person offers a call-back in 2-3 weeks to get an appointment, the appointment will then be vaguely a few months out. The pharmacy services are delightful and should get a 5-star review. The health care staff need a new label, they are not providers.

When the doctor did come in, I explained that I was upset about the delay. Her comment, “I’m sorry, but it’s not like I was having a cup of coffee.” Are you kidding? When I want these down for my own well being! They would rather refer you to another department that perform a simple physical or even check my blood pressure and so fourth. The providers do not give a damn about their patients. I have been with them for 25+ years and it’s only gotten worse. They pretend very well but I suggest not going with Kaiser. Go with a better healthcare insurance provider. I am planning on changing when open enrollment comes in November. I am also going to report the MDs to the medical board and to their lead physician (if that even does ANYTHING). It’s crazy it’s been horrible ever since my main doctor retired. I have not once talked face to face with my primary care doctor (who is always on leave when I message), and the mental health department is grossly under staffed for the needs of the area. I am lucky if I see a therapist once every two months. Complaints go to nowhere and are swept under the rug to be forgotten about, and you are not a partner in your own care and there is no personalization to your care either. If you don’t do it their way, they will not help you. I’ve thought about changing jobs just so I don’t have to have this insurance that doesn’t help me. Now I’m just self funding therapy because Kaiser refused to send out of network even though they cannot provide adequate services to their members. They just push groups.

I've had Kaiser as my insurance for three years now. The first two years were good. Professional doctors and good coverage. Then the third year hit. My husband and I were going through some health issues that required help outside of KP. KP referred us to the clinic we needed to go through and after that everything went downhill. There has been so many horrible experience. I don't know where to start...
1) The worst part of the whole experience has been trying to get test results back. The ordering doctor (outside of KP) is not getting any of the tests results he ordered. So I, the patient am having to call KP, check the app multiple times a day, and go as far as to e-mail my husband's urologist and have him send me the results via IM which I then screenshot and send to the ordering doctor. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS that the patient is having to do all of this. They didn't even call to give us the test results!
2) Every time I call KP I am transferred 2-3 times after an original HOUR WAIT. Then, once someone finally picks up I have had to re-explain our circumstances to each person who picks up the phone. Every time I have to call KP it is guaranteed to be a lesson in frustration.
3) The coverage plan for anything OUTSIDE the KP buildings is horrible. Meaning 0 coverage.
I am so disappointed in KP. I pay a lot of money out of every check and don't appreciate the rudeness, lack of empathy, and overall absolutely horrible customer service. I will NOT be choosing KP for my healthcare again in November and HIGHLY, HIGHLY encourage anyone that has a health issue more than routine medical care to NOT choose KP as their health insurance.

I was a patient of Kaiser Permanente for years until I finally decided to terminate this insurance. I have many stories of ineffective and limited treatment I received there, but the last one finally got me leave Kaiser for good. To make a long story short (and this one was long as it took almost 4 years), I went to Kaiser with a tiny wart on my finger. After 4 years, I ended up with a gigantic wart and Kaiser still continued to provide me with the same conventional treatment. They were not going to offer me anything else. Needless to say, I left them and went to see the Center for Dermatology at St. Vincent. After only 2 treatments the wart was gone, but none of the treatments I received there were what Kaiser was willing to offer. If another doctor asks who was my doctor before, this speaks for itself. I wish I could download the pictures for comparison, anyone would be in shock. I will never go back to Kaiser and I recommend anyone to avoid it at all costs.

Please, please, please beware when you visit Kaiser. Ask exactly what tests the clinical staff are performing and how much their tests cost. When my blood was drawn for a routine checkup, Kaiser performed an additional procedure on my blood without my knowledge or approval based on an order from a physician I have never met. They then sent me a $5,000 bill.
Nobody at Kaiser could tell me specifically what procedure had been performed. Eventually, I learned that a hematologist, I had never even spoken with, conducted a study regarding my genetic bleeding disorder. The report appeared on the Kaiser portal weeks later. I appealed the charge, not covered under my high-deductible plan, and Kaiser denied my request without an appropriate response. I am now communicating with lawyers and the media. However, I am also concerned about the wider community.
If you do not have resources and you have a high deductible plan with Kaiser, you have to be a strong advocate for yourself. If your physician wants to send you for any tests, get all costs upfront. Baltimore, please be careful. It is a scary world when a company can take your blood, send it to another company for analysis without your knowledge, and then bill you nearly $5,000 without a satisfactory explanation. I feel violated, yet I am also concerned for people who cannot advocate for themselves. I will be speaking with the media and everyone else I know about this unconscionable act. Protect yourselves, your friends, and your families.

Overall Kaiser insurance gets the job done but with average doctors. I've been with Kaiser for about a year and have had issues with every doctor I've seen. They are not very knowledgeable or skilled. It appears that Kaiser hires substandard doctors to cut their costs. For example, I asked my main doctor to refer me to a chiropractor, he said he does not believe in chiropractic and referred me instead to a physical medicine doctor who told me the same thing. The thing is that Kaiser provides chiropractic care and these doctors are stopping patients from getting it. Then, after doing some digging I discovered that I did not need their referral for chiropractic care, I could just self refer. Someone is apparently not paying attention.
Another fun experience was when I went to get a cortisone shot in my thumb for arthritis. The doctor had to stick a hypodermic needle in my thumb joint four times before he got it right! Just one time is painful, but four is torture. Another experience by an average doctor was with a Podiatrist. I had an ingrown nail. All the doctor had to do was use a scalpel and cut the top of the nail off. He said he could not do it, which means he is not skilled enough to cut a nail. Instead he said he could remove the nail entirely. Permanently remove my toenail for an ingrown nail problem, really? Here's a good one. When I went for the referral to the Podiatrist, the doctor put in my medical record that I had an upper respiratory infection. What? How is that possible unless my big toe is sicker than I thought. I think you get the picture now.

Kaiser refused to prescribe for me a medication that I depend on to get a good night's sleep on nights when I suffer from insomnia. I don't need it that often and when I do need it, I use a minute dose, namely 0.25 mg of ** [**]. To put this in perspective, ** states that a typical dose for insomnia is 2-4 mg. All I was asking for was ten 1 mg tablets to last a year. By **'s reckoning that would be 3-5 doses for a whole year!
My physician refused on the basis that this drug is not recommended for the elderly. She took none of the following into account: 1) I use a tiny dose that cannot possibly cause harm; 2) I have been using it to good effect and without side effects for 30 years; and 3) I do not consider myself to be "elderly" because I am in phenomenal shape and hold my own against twenty-somethings on backpacking trips and on the soccer field. I appealed my doctor's decision and her supervisor likewise refused to prescribe the medication. I then filed a formal complaint and whoever reviewed it likewise refused.
Based on this and other experiences with Kaiser I can tell you that they provide "cookbook medicine," meaning they rely heavily on guidelines and algorithms and don't do much in the way of critical thinking. I want to warn folks about Kaiser, especially type one diabetics that are currently enrolled or considering enrolling in a Kaiser healthcare plan. Here’s the background, I’m middle aged but very healthy and active. I'm a type one diabetic and have been for 27 years. In that time very little has changed that has improved my life with regard to managing diabetes but there are two important exceptions.
The first was a simple form factor change going from using syringe and vials to using insulin pens. These pens are very expensive, criminally expensive in the USA but this is the way it is going to be until our legislators start regulating prices. That said it's well worth the money for diabetics this convenience change is important. It means you can carry one item in your pocket and dose when you need it. It doesn't require finding a private place to set out your syringe and needles on a table, measure out a shot and take it then pack things up and head back to whatever you were doing.
The other big step forward has been using the Freestyle Liebri blood sugar meter. This device uses a sensor about the size of a quarter on your arm to measure your blood sugar. With this device you can measure your blood sugar quickly and painlessly without going through a similar process of finding a place to layout your meter, tabs and lancets, poking your finger and waiting for a blood sugar reading.
With the Freestyle Liebri I check my sugar 40 to 50 times a day, vs 3 or 4 times a day before. I'm always able to get ahead of high and low sugar issues now and I'm able to get ahead of problems before they become problems. Also, prior to using this new meter I didn't have a clear understanding of how things were really working as it relates to insulin vs food vs exercise and I'm able to see where my blood sugar is trending before I take a decision about how much insulin I should take. After using this device for 3 years, I'm convinced that type one diabetics cannot be truly effective in managing their sugar without using this or the Dexcom device that provides similar functionality.
My wife and I unfortunately made a decision at the beginning of the year to switch to a new healthcare provider and largely based on on Kaiser Permanente’s rating we chose go go with KP. This is a decision I regret, though we were not particularly happy with your previous insurance KP has been a complete disaster. I want to note that we did check the Kaiser formulary prior to joining, and I did speak with a customer service agent to confirm that the medications we needed were covered.
After joining I was told by my primary doctor that to get insulin, I needed to make an appointment with an endocrinologist first. I was warned by my primary doctor that I probably would not be able to get my insulin in the pen form factor due to cost. I was shocked by this, it’s listed in their formulary, but I hoped that this would all be sorted out after talking with the endocrinologist. Between seeing my primary doctor and the endocrinologist I also found out that Kaiser had only just started covering Freestyle Liebri patients this year. This was also troubling because it meant that the endocrinologist had no real experience with patients using this kind of device.
When I went to se the endocrinologist I was told that the only people at Kaiser that could be prescribed insulin pens are people that have dexterity problems or vision problems, so he could not prescribe insulin in the pen form factor. He asked me a series of questions that confirmed that he didn’t understand how immediate access to blood sugar levels changes the way you can treat diabetes. I think on paper he understood that the data has application, but his focus on calculating insulin dosage based on the carb count to the exclusion of activity levels, current blood sugar level, as well as what direction it’s currently trending, down or up was disappointing and even dangerous. This meant that he didn’t understand the world we are currently living in.
Both he and his nurse could not believe that my A1C level could be human normal, they both indicated to me that a number like this must mean I’m having constant life threatening low blood sugar levels. They repeatedly told me that I needed to get a glucose pen and have it ready because I was about to die. I repeatedly explained that I’ve had no such events since I started using the Freestyle Liebri, this is one its benefits, but it was clear after reading his after appointment notes that they didn't believed me. He also asked to see my sensor and went immediately to the “time in target” report thinking that the values he saw in this report confirmed his suspicion.
What he didn’t understand is that this report uses a the user set range that can be almost anything, from 100 to 140 to 70 to 180. The report he was looking at was essentially meaningless. It did not show him how much time was spent below 55, the number he felt was a low sugar value to be concerned about. I tried very hard to explain to him why I needed insulin in the pen form factor and I was unable to make him understand that insulin pens make it possible for me to give myself a meal shot or deal with a sugar trending up in a timely manner. I tried to explain that being forced to go back to syringes and vials breaks a complementary pairing of access to blood sugar data and access to insulin. His remark to me was, “you should just give it a try”.
I’ve over a decade using syringes and vials as well as insulin pens. I don’t need to give it a try, I know that this would create problems for me being able to give insulin shots in a timely manner. Even without a blood sugar meter like the Freestyle Liebri it is not ok to force patients to use syringes and vials anymore. He was also surprised that I didn’t want to use an insulin pump, and seemed unaware of the fact that those devices have killed and hospitalized with serious injuries thousands of patients. This class of medical device has more incidents logged with the FDA than any other type of medical device.
Kaiser is a very bad idea for type one diabetics. I’ve had to go to Mexico to get the insulin pens I need, yet I’m paying more for Kaiser than I was for my previous insurance. I’m looking for a way to escape this mistake that I made signing up with Kaiser, but I hope I can prevent others from experiencing my fate. If you are a type one diabetic already with Kaiser find another provider. Kaiser doesn't care about you, they care about saving money at your expense.

They make you go through this excruciating and painful phone calls to what they refer to as call centers where you can be on hold for 20, 30, 40 minutes and get rounds and rounds of automated choices that only delays the process, asking the same questions over and over until you are connected to an actual person who will ask you the same frustrating questions that the automated voice was asking. Recently (Feb. 2020) had my “annual physical”, which is to be included in my premium. The technician didn’t get enough blood sample to complete a CBC and I had to go back to give a new sample. Upon arrival I was told I needed to pay a $10 copay. This was still part of my routine physical. KAISER will not tell you exactly what preventative tests are included in an annual exam, nor can you find this information anywhere on their website.
A couple of days later I received an invoice for $75 for blood testing that wasn’t part of the physical. I even told my Dr. that I wasn’t willing to pay for “extras” that weren’t covered during our visit! Did you know that Kaiser only recommends a CBC be done every 5 years! This is a sneaky and deceitful practice to bill for items after tests have been completed, when it is unclear to patients what is covered and what is considered “extra”.
I had my routine mammogram and was notified via phone message that radiology needed “more images”. I called radiology at 8:45 in the morning and got a voicemail that said no one was available to answer my call. I had to leave a message. The return call systems at Kaiser are inefficient and incredibly frustrating. Unless you have a desk job and are able to sit on hold for 45 minutes, connecting to a person will be difficult. Bear in mind, this a return call for more mammography tests, and for me this brings up an exorbitant level of anxiety and fear, so an efficient and empathetic call back system would be a great help for patients in this predicament.
Before I went for the additional images KAISER ordered, I contacted member services to make sure there wasn’t additional charges that would be incurred since they “didn’t get what was necessary for evaluation”. The customer service person assured me that since Kaiser was requesting more views there would be no additional charges, or fees. Upon check in they asked for a $30 copay. I refused to pay, and I am anticipating a bill from them shortly. I will follow up.
As far as the return mammography experience....from the moment I checked in until the moment I left I felt as though I was a piece of paper going through an assembly line, getting stamped with required check-off items to complete the transaction. First the nurses call you from behind a wall that divides the waiting area. You hear your name being called and must go “find” the person who is calling your name.
In my experience the nurse called two of us together. She shuttled us down a hallway - sent us to two separate waiting rooms with instructions to change and go wait in designated areas. The mammogram technician was matter of fact, had no sensitivity that this was a “call back” and could be emotionally distressing. It was again, a drone-like, humiliating experience of pulling, pressing, adjusting and squashing a breast to get her portion of the assembly-line “work” completed. Check. She told me to change and have a seat and wait for the radiologist to come in and return with results.
The radiologist and his assistant entered the room, closed the door and proceeded with the results. They recommended a biopsy and insisted that it get scheduled right then and there. I was given three pieces of paper in a Manila envelope. None of which had anything to do with the findings, or additional information on why the biopsy was being ordered. The assistant did “insist” that I look at a very worn piece of paper that showed a patient face down on an exam table with a breast dangling down through a hole, with the location of the radiologist in The operating room setting. Shocking to say least! This assistant was simply getting her portion of the assembly line work done. There was no empathy, no thoughtfulness on how distressing this all might be to an unsuspecting patient who simply came in for additional screening images.
The most disturbing part of the encounter was a booklet that they provided that says “A woman’s guide to breast cancer treatment...a California State required guide." The assistant told me not to read it until I received the results from the biopsy. I am now trying to figure out how much I need to pay for this biopsy. I feel like KAISER was overly anxious to get a surgery on the books and rushed me through a very unexpected outcome. From the customer service at check in to the assistant who ushered me into a changing room to the mammography technologist and the cold-hearted insensitive radiologist who was eagerly anticipating a new surgery...KAISER is lacking in every way.
I have been going over how distressing this experience has been and how it could have been different for me (or any other woman).. The answer is more sensitivity to a patient's experience. Teach these people empathy, compassion, kindness and thoughtfulness. Hire skilled human beings who are actually caring for a patient's needs. Not just trying to get their lines of the paper checked off. I do not feel like I have enough information to rush into this biopsy. I am cancelling my appointment and will schedule it on my time, once I feel I have enough education and information on the procedure. KAISER gets an F- in customer care and transparency of billing procedures.

They said “well it’ll take us 10-12 business days.” I call at the end of those 12 days and Kaiser says “oops sorry running behind but we will do it in the next three days.” I call new OB three days later... “Never got anything.” Me “can I make an appt anyway? My belly is exploding and I’m 37 weeks.” “No.” I call Kaiser “can you fax it instead of email it? Cuz the email didn’t go through to them.” “No you’ll have to start the 10-12 business day process over again.” My husband makes a quick phone call to everyone today and MIRACULOUSLY everyone is able to fax and receive faxes. Kaiser is quick to give prescriptions to healthy people that won't benefit from them but only suffer side effects. I am 55 year old male that went on low carb diet and lost and have kept off 40 lb weight loss for a year and a half. Every marker of cardiovascular health has improved. BP is 110/65, lost 10" of waist making it below the 2 to 1 height to waist ratio, my triglycerides way down, HDL up, as well, low CRP, etc, etc. I am leaner than ever, and muscular outperforming men half my age and feel like I turned the clock back 30 years but even better.
MY one marker LDL did go up and that is the only thing my doctors want to discuss and treat. I also paid for my own CAC (coronary artery calcium) score showing a ZERO score or NO blockage in my arteries. I do not need or would I benefit from a statin drug. Cholesterol is not a poison. Our bodies are made of it, our brain too and we would DIE without it. Their obsession with it despite all facets of health being improved are dumbfounding. All drugs have side effects including STATINS. The benefits of them are way overblown. If you read fine print the actual benefits are 2% chance of heart attack taking a statin vs 3% chance not taking them. But your rate of cancer and diabetes go up taking a statin.
Kaiser has no clue how to prevent any disease but is good for life long treating with meds that all have side effects. I would drop Kaiser if not for Wife and daughter that like them. I am prescription free at 55 and plan on staying that way. Diet and exercise not meds. Low carb diets do work and most people would benefit from them. Obesity and Diabetes can be cured by staying on low carb. Eating Meat and red fatty meat does not kill but heal. Do your own research if you want to live long and strong and avoid bad advice even from a Doctor or Doctors. I've dropped several of them because of outdated practices. J B

I am very traumatized of being photographed by Kaiser doctors without my consent at all. Every appt full image of my vagina in full size with all details was on screen, and I was shocked all the time. Multiple grievances to kaiser it was waste of time. All Kaiser promises of patient privacy only on paper to attract customers. Came eventually through arbitration and was told that Kaiser doesn’t have additional set to keep those pornographic images in spacial order set, and every kaiser person who has access to medical record was ok to see those photos.
Images of my vagina were exposed in hallway in Roseville dermatology department. I discovered only that porno images full size of my vagina when I came through 2 surgeries, and doctors were opening IMAGES, and first was always my vagina with separated legs. I cried many times of being ashamed, but kaiser send me only letters that they deeply regret, because they cannot help me with that. That grievance was reviewed also by male analyst, and he never answered my request to speak by phone. Male medical assistant was preying in my med record after he took my vitals, and I noted his strange behavior when he turned computer screen away from me, and he strangely look at me. I stood up and noted that he is reviewing porno pictures. I screamed loudly, and he run out of room. I asked NP to document but they cover each other.
I was forwarded eventually to arbitration because they did not to protect my privacy. During arbitration colorfully images of my vagina were laid down on table hours in presence of 4 men including my son, and my female co-worker and 2 female from kaiser. My former Kaiser PCP was telling how she in past asked other women for consent to take images of their vagina, but they denied, but with me she told that she remembers consent. Everything was fabricated story. I wanted to jump on her, but my son hold me, and all my body. False statements how she explained everything and everything just made up story by kaiser attorney.
I know one they God will discover that lie. I never sign consent to photograph full size of my vagina, and suffering very badly thereafter. Eventually I will live this word. I was more hurt thereafter when kaiser attorney send almost all my medical record through regular mail with multiple colorful pictures of my vagina with all my identity and somebody opened that envelope and some pages ripped off. Useless was to complain to department of managed health- it’s same corrupted system.
Everything about kaiser looks very nice only when you read how you protected, but in reality I came through emotional abuse. I reported kaiser ENT doctor who was reading to me what I have on my vagina without reason for that, and kaiser never investigated abuse. I went to local KCRA news, brought all evidences, they took interview, but received a phone call that kaiser is not letting them to release that information on news. Of, course!!!
They do everything electronic, and did not predict that female patients will be sexually exposed to every Kaiser worker, because no special set, and kaiser expert told that since you are in kaiser every health care worker has access to pictures of your vagina!!! I never expected to go through terrible things in my life. I asked kaiser managers to help, and one of them told me thank you for sharing story, because she also has discoloration on private area, and she never will go with kaiser gynecologist. Kaiser is an HMO, not a health care company. It It is an insurance company that pays the salary of doctors and nurses and their support personnel to provide cost effective treatment. This was OK for a time, but now that they have lifers it has become a serious problem. People work for them that have now had no outside on-the-job training other than at Kaiser. The distinction is that the Doctors, Nurses and all other workers simply follow company protocols for all illnesses and don't actually do any thinking on their own.
The result of the recent influx of people with insurance has caused the dam to break on the quality of health care workers and the lack of the ability of their people to think outside of the box has caused a lack of adaptability in the system. This has resulted in a sustained and rapid decline in the quality of care in most HMOs and you can definitely feel it at Kaiser.
The phrase you will hear a lot is: "I've been doing this job for 20+ years and that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard!". You'll hear it from the receptionists to the phone line people, to the nurses that were trained in the late 60s who can't get a job anywhere else, all giving you their discount store opinion on your health problems or jumping to conclusions based on the last company training they attended. Both of which waste your time. At Kaiser, everyone is wannabe doctor except for the M.D.s who insist you call them by their first name. Be prepared for that receptionist to give you the latest advice from a television doctor they saw while checking you in.
Some examples of recent personal experiences:
1) I had a doctor who tried to prescribe me the opiate **, without knowing it was an opiate. Describing it as the best non-opiate pain killer on the market.
2) I had a doctor tell me they always knew with 100% certainty by looking in your ears, nose and mouth if you had a bacterial infection or not. That isn't true. It is a guess, a better guess than 99% of non-doctors, but it is a guess.
3) I had a 60 year old nurse who demanded to know the specifics of why I'd come in trying to get a second dose of antibiotics yell at me that they "don't prescribe narcotics!" at the urgent care in front of a number of people because she was insecure that she didn't know what medication I was on. I had been diagnosed on a previous visit with pneumonia so this was an extra fun visit.
4) I had a nurse give me the wrong vaccine shot (something not for people my age) and I had an insanely bad reaction to it, passing out and hitting my head on a night stand when I got home. I'm not an anti-vaxxer type, but they told me one thing and gave me something else entirely that isn't even established as effective in my age group. It was clearly an error.
These were all incidents in the last two years. I have been with Kaiser on and off for longer than most nurses, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that it is getting worse, not better right now. I would have given them 3-4 stars in the 90s and 2-3 in the 2000s. Now this is a bottom end organization even for an HMO.

I have not been please so far with the help I am getting. I have been dealing with a leg injury that won't heal because all the previous doctors either misdiagnosed it or dismissed it like it wasn't a urgency. Therapy only helped to a certain extent and that was it. It's been six months and the symptoms have worsened. I now have back pain, nightly spasms, neck pain and arm pain because my leg will not heal. I got Kaiser hoping I would get better care, but I am getting similar treatment like the Medicaid. Worst part is I am covering all the expenses unlike Medicaid. Wasting my money just to get the same dismissals from the doctors, seriously? I've seen the therapist, neurologist and orthopedist. What is it going to cost to help me treat one simple mishap that now turned into a series of body parts in pain? This could have been avoided if my injury was diagnosed properly the first time.
Now my back is is narrowing down despite all the maintenance I am going through. I bet they are just waiting for an emergency situation to steal more money from me. I despise you doctors, you all work for yourselves. I just need HELP fixing my leg, but you can't even devote your time to that. This is the last time I am considering you. Thanks for NOTHING!!!!

If you are looking to save money I believe Kaiser is likely the way to go, as it is with me. However, as I am finding out, you are selling your soul for that. G-d help you if you need to reach your doc because it could and likely will take all day. If you have any other insurance not attached to a giant conglomerate, like Kaiser, you call your doctor's office and they can get your doctor right away if he/she isn't in with another patient. I had a telephone call set up with my doctor. That conference call took about a week or more to set up. My doc called me but my phone, which is 1 year old would not ring (AT&T) so I missed the call. I knew immediately that happened and called Kaiser right back. I was on hold for 11 minutes. Then I get someone who takes messages and am told he can send a message to the doctor but she might not receive it for a day. Now I can't get another conference call for 1 week.
Does this make sense when you have a health issue? Only Kaiser is going to handle you like you're a customer at a department store and not a person in need of health care. I don't know who these administrative people are with absolutely no moral compass but they are not here to help us. We've been with Kaiser for several years and have been generally satisfied with the service until now. Our family member was having some health problems that required medical attention, so we called his Kaiser doctor for medical advice/set up an appointment. We were told that because the insurance plan does not start until February 1. They could not help us THOUGH WE'VE BEEN WITH KAISER FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND THE PLAN LAPSED ONLY A COUPLE WEEKS AGO. We asked if we could speak with our primary care provider over the phone. Again, they said we would have to wait until February 1 to speak to the family doctor.
Our family member is an elderly patient with a history of stroke and a heart condition. We told the Kaiser representative (and later, member services) that we would like to speak with the primary care provider earlier than February 1 given the patient's medical history. The representative then connected us to member services to see if member services could expedite the activation (again, as a reminder, we had been Kaiser members for several years. Had it not been for Kaiser cancelling the plan, we would not even be in this situation), who repeated the same canned spiel about the February 1 start date. Did not seem to care one bit about the patient's health situation and circumstance, not to mention our concerns. At this point, we're exasperated. --- It's stressful enough worrying about a family member's health, but add the administrative regs on top of it --- so then we ask then what our options are.
Member services says we can go see another doctor outside of kaiser --- to clarify, this would mean finding a new doctor outside of the kaiser network (calling various providers, asking for availability and whether they would take new patients, etc.) when in fact the Kaiser primary provider has/knows all of the patients medical history. Efficiency here? We pointed out the great inconvenience and really, utter lack of common sense in the member services rep's recommendation. We pressed on the urgency of the health issue. All we needed was one call with the primary care provider, but Kaiser, due to some strict and unproductive set of regulations, would not budge.
At this point, there was no utility in continuing the conversation. So point-blank, we asked member services, "So do you expect the patient to just drop dead after waiting until February 1?" After a few seconds, they said they would talk to someone. Put us on hold for at least several minutes (perhaps longer), and later, the line was disconnected so we did not even get to hear what they had to say.
Had we been brand new members to Kaiser, it would be another story. But we have been dealing with Kaiser network for several years, and the patient has already established a lengthy medical record within Kaiser. On top of that, the patient has a medical history. So for Kaiser to refuse to accommodate and leave the patient with no choice but to either WAIT OUT THE SICKNESS until February 1, or see another doctor outside the network, to us, seemed counterproductive and not at all sympathetic or cognizant of the role and mission of providing medical care to sick patients. Apathy, laziness, and the "we don't really care because we're following regs and it's not our fault if the patient is unable to receive the proper medical care in due time" puts the interests of the corporation and bureaucracy first before patient care.
I would also add that Kaiser still employs a doctor who has received dismal reviews from multiple patients for her incompetence, condescension, and laziness. Our family member had initially received medical care from Dr. **, but switched doctors as Ms. Kim always returned our calls several weeks late (with no apologies, just orders for the patient to take XYZ medication, to set up an appt, etc.), talked over the patient, and was overall an inattentive, poor medical "expert" who really should reconsider why she's in the field to begin with. If you look up her name, you might still be able to see some of the bad reviews from previous/current patients. Pure disappointment. We are most likely going to cancel or switch out of Kaiser, thanks to our stressful and frustrating experiences with the facility, the providers, and member services.

I chose Kaiser because my primary care doctor there is excellent. She listens, is thorough and has great bedside manner. They are good if you are healthy and just need a general checkup or need to check blood pressure, cholesterol etc. However, once you get sick and need to see a specialist, go to urgent care or emergency, expect the unexpected. They will try to do the bare minimum in regards to diagnostic and screening tests. I had one urgent care doctor who told me there was nothing she could do to help me. She didn't even want to do a basic urine test or blood work for my symptoms. She only ordered them because I insisted and it turns out that I had an infection. They didn't even bother to follow up and call me to tell me I had an infection. I found out because I called them for the results after not seeing any improvement in my symptoms.
Another time, a specialist ordered a lab test for me. I submitted a sample for the lab and waited to hear back from them with the results. After waiting a few weeks and not hearing from them, I contacted them and the specialist apologized and confirmed that the sample was never processed by the lab. There are some good doctors, nurses and clerks there but the overall level of incompetence is unacceptable considering the fact that all patient information and records are streamlined. I also had an unnecessary x-ray done in the emergency room once due to lack of communication between a doctor and staff. The majority of doctors at Kaiser are young so I suggest you find one with a lot of experience. Vision Essentials was another disappointment as my optometrist couldn't get my prescription right. I am counting down the days for open enrollment so that I can switch to another insurance. By the way, I'm still sick so wish me luck.

Simply put, what seems like a good deal when you are signing up for health insurance cost - wise will end up evening out in the end. And the countless hours you put in trying to schedule appointments, see specialists, and get your illness or injury treated will offset any perceived savings you think you are getting. You see, for EVERY problem you have, Kaiser constantly refers you to your general practitioner, regardless of whether a doctor higher up the chain is referring you or not. Then, you sit on the phone for hours trying to schedule an appointment to see a specialist, they tell you to leave your name and they will call you back - which they never do. Also, the doctors I met with seemed inept and were quite rude in their bedside manner. You are MUCH better off paying more for your insurance and staying as far away from Kaiser as you can. You will be glad (and healthier) in the end.

I have had Kaiser Permanente two separate years now, and both experiences have been dismal to shockingly negligent. As an Oregon resident, I will warn fellow Oregonians, especially anybody living south of Portland/Salem, that the coverage options are dismal. You are limited to one Kaiser-run facility, and a handful of PeaceHealth facilities. Honestly, I didn't have a bad time working with the Kaiser Office doctors or nurses. They weren't the best I've ever had, but also not the worst. My biggest issue with Kaiser, by far, is their appalling customer service. Let me explain:
The first year I had Kaiser, I went to a doctor WHILE I was covered by them. My university offered me better insurance, so I ended up switching to theirs before that year ended. However, Kaiser tried to cheat me by telling that doctor's office I didn't have coverage when I saw that doctor... even though I most definitely did! I was sent a full bill from the doctor, as if I was uninsured when I went. The Kaiser representative I spoke to acted like I was speaking tongues, when I explained to her the concept of how, if I go to the doctor when paying for their coverage, they have to cover my visit. The bill was adjusted, but the fact I had to go out of my way to explain how health insurance works to a health insurance representative was shocking.
Flash forward to 2019, I ended up choosing Kaiser insurance again, mostly out of financial desperation, to which I now regret. Without going into another novel, essentially I had several large bills from doctors' visits to Kaiser facilities. I spoke to two different Kaiser representatives, agreeing verbally to payment plans for these bills, yet they have sent me to collections – TWICE – even though I have been regularly paying the "agreed upon" amount for the payment plan, every month without fail! Now Kaiser is risking my credit score, despite the fact I came to supposed agreed-upon plans WITH Kaiser representatives. Long story short, STAY AWAY from Kaiser Permanente! They will charge you an arm and a leg for shoddy coverage, and then try to cheat you out of further money. The word of their representatives is meaningless and unhelpful. Extremely disappointed and angry – I will never work with this company again.

I’ve been with Kaiser nearly my entire life. I’ve barely used it because I am healthy and fit. There have been some stitches and broken bones with my boys along the years. It cost me $3020 per month for my family, or $36,240 per year. We have copays for everything, and prescriptions run about $30 each. We live in Northern California (don’t ever move here, the Bay Area is horrible now). Now that my husband and I are nearing 60, health issues are arising especially for my husband. It has been highly frustrating and disappointing to have to argue and fight each step of the way to get any proactive care.
Example 1, my husband’s last several years of lab results showed a rapid decrease with his kidney function but nobody mentioned it, or did anything about it until an emergency arose with his knee and some nurse caught it. They said his knee surgery couldn’t be done due to problems with his kidney function. This was alarming to hear for ordinarily healthy people. After waiting and more waiting, and some fussing, all they would do is let him return to his GP (who knows nothing about kidneys) in order to get a referral to the specialist, only to wait longer and still not see the specialist.
I had to research the definitions and meaning of his historical lab results myself, for literally hours because I’m a lawyer not a doctor. I ‘diagnosed’ him with Stage 3 Kidney Disease. I then began researching how to deal with it. Again, healthy people seeing the word “disease” is alarming. Kaiser seems to have lost sight of this concept. Eventually my husband was given an ultrasound. He finally received a lab report and an email telling him he had Stage 3 Kidney Disease with a referral to a class to learn how to eat better. A doctor never met with him. $3200 every month for this level of attention.
Example 2. My husband had a hernia in his belly button. He is a construction worker and lifts heavy objects. He could not look more like a stereotypical old school construction guy. Eventually, he had surgery to repair the hernia. He lost out on a lot of money during his recuperation being a self employed general contractor. Well, less than a year later, the hernia returned and it was very painful for my husband. During the scheduling of his 2nd surgery, he learned that the first doctor neglected to surgically reinforce the area as is needed with patients who work in occupations like his. He lost significant revenue being off again, and had to endure a 2nd surgery unnecessarily. Ridiculous.
There are so many incidents including me having to get forceful with my doctors to get hormone testing and medication to assist with menopause symptoms, not fixing my broken ring finger which is now permanently bent and looks awful, never mentioning to my husband that there is a sleep apnea device that goes into your skin instead of having to wear that horrible mask (something else we researched on our own).
I found this review website as I was searching for a new medical provider for my family and wanted to let others know that Kaiser is convenient but that’s about it. I’m moving on from Kaiser because my husband and I need proactive doctors who are actually paying attention, and desirous of doing things and suggesting things to proactively keep us healthy, rather than simply providing triage because that’s how it feels.

I have had single coverage through Kaiser for 10 years, and until recently, have been satisfied with their medical services. I am now retired but two years shy of 65. My insurance premium has gone up consistently every year and is $710 per month as of 1/1/2020. Needless to say, I'm switching to another insurance company with a network in all 50 states (Kaiser is only in a handful, so beware if you travel outside of Colorado). My new insurance premium is $600 per month with $0 copay to visit an in-network doctor, $40 for a specialist without needing a referral (Kaiser requires a referral for any specialist).
My high-deductible Kaiser plan covers nothing until I've paid $3,500 out of pocket. I've never met my deductible. I got tired of getting bills for hundreds of dollars for minor things like an office visit with my PCP. But I did request a flu shot in early October and had to fight to get it scheduled because according to the person on the appointment line, it was too early and it would wear off. I finally was able to get my "free" flu shot before I left town for several weeks. And, surprise, flu season came early this year.
Kaiser has laid off almost all of its office and clerical support staff, including receptionists. So you go to the PCP after checking in and hope someone comes out and sees you waiting for your appointment. I waited 28 minutes on hold recently to schedule my "free" mammogram before the end of 2019 and finally just hung up. Those you cannot schedule online because it's with the radiology department.
Kaiser's patient service has deteriorated to the point of negligence. I will no longer trust my health to such a greedy company that puts profits over patients. You'll miss me lots, Kaiser, because my $7,000+ annual premium is your cash cow. I use very little services but pay exorbitant premiums and then pay 100% of any service I need. Bye bye.

At my last visit with Doctor **, I was told that if I quit smoking that day he would schedule the surgery in one month. Before surgery I would have to take a UA to make sure I was nicotine free, if not he would not do the surgery. When I asked him about someone that was a drug addict or alcoholic, he said they would also need a UA. He also said that anyone that was overweight would have to lose weight before they would do surgery. When I complained to Kaiser, I received a letter and a phone call from them telling me they would look into it and get back to me. I still haven't heard a word. Don't waste your time with Kaiser.

It used to be four but the UC in Northglenn was recently closed. That leaves one in Aurora, one in Lone Tree, and one in Lakewood. That's it! It's pathetic. This on top of them overbooking doctors in general so that most of them are in a rush to get you out, they don't do blood work by default during an annual physical exam, and just incompetent docs. She talked through the interpreter even though I was speaking to her in English. My grandmother felt so anxious with the whole situation, since this person was so discourteous and difficult. I have experienced two knee replacements, in 2005 and 2014, and a left hip replacement in 2015. Over the past several months in 2019 my mobility was going down and my pain going up so I requested a referral to an orthopedic surgeon for evaluation of my hip. Prior to seeing the surgeon I made certain my regular tests of all kinds were up to date as I presumed I needed surgery. Mind you, I do not drink, I quit smoking 25 years ago and my blood work is excellent. Although the physician stated I obviously did need hip replacement he would not authorize because my BMI is 40 or over. WHAT???? My weight was the same as when I had my previous replacements....all three of them. I do not know when BMI became a doorway to medical treatment and I was stunned. I asked for his opinion to be reviewed and although he agreed, he never did so.
He made an appointment for me without asking me about date and time with a nutritionist. There was no answer to my question about what my risk was to my health if I do not have the needed surgery. He also said he could refer me to the pain clinic where I might get narcotics for my pain. WHAT???? Why don't we just fix the problem? I ended up appealing the decision to Kaiser and requesting Kaiser pay for a second opinion from the surgeon who did my other replacements and they said no. Appealing was a waste of time for me because Kaiser simply said I should be evaluated by another Kaiser surgeon. Why would I do that when the Kaiser standard is no replacements for those with BMI over 40?
I feel discriminated against because of my weight. The surgeon did not evaluate my overall health-or even see me- just saw my weight and said "no". My solution is to change to another Medicare Advantage Plan offered by Johns Hopkins starting on January 1, 2020 so I may consult my original surgeon. For example if today is November 10th to reinstate one would need to pay also December. Keeping in mind that December's payment is not due until December 1st for members. If unfortunately someone is struggling financially and was terminated for that reason it becomes difficult for that person to reinstate and I don't think that's right. For a company that makes 80 billion dollars to further hurt the struggling individual who scraped together enough money to pay the past but then also needs to pay an upcoming month.

My husband won’t, based on old information and the fact that he is bull headed! After reading the most current negative reviews, I’m wondering when I might experience what others have. I have found KP to be a smooth running machine in all aspects. I have always had great communication with KP and my doctors; I love being able to email them with questions I have knowing I will hear back within a day or so.
As others have noted, everything under one roof (for the most part). Beautiful facilities, clean, up to date equipment. My wife and I are both members of Kaiser and have experienced a similar lack help, advocacy and basic attention to us as people. It seems Kaiser doctors are instructed to provide the bare minimum care, procedures and tests allowing our health to decline to the point we both needed to go to the ER. We have heard many similar stories from our friends and family as well. I came in with an abscess and a fever and was sent home with antibiotics. The nested day I had to be rushed to surgery because my symptoms got far worse. Because I was sent home the surgery left a much larger wound and months of wound aftercare.
As for my wife, the first story is about herniated disks from pregnancy. The doctors all agreed that she had 2 or three herniated disks. She had extreme back pain and numbness down her leg. Her doctor said the worst possible thing for her to do was sit in an chair all day which her job requires. We had a newborn and my wife couldn't even pick him up but the doctor refused to give her any disability, she was badly disabled, and even refused to write a note that my wife needed a better chair.
The second story is currently in process. My wife's platelet count dropped down to 45k, they sent her home with no instructions and retested a week later. The results came in at 2:30 am when we got a call to rush to the ER because she was at risk for internal bleeding which could occur in her brain. The whole family rushed over where they prepped her for a transfusion. They retested her and her platelets had gone up from 19k to 24k so still very low but no transfusion. Other tests were performed at ER but we have still not received them. Her oncologist met the next day and prescribed steroids which got her platelets out of the danger zone. Only a few blood tests have been done to date but when we talked to a friend who had the same problem they did a lot more tests and discovered the problem.
This is obviously extremely stressful and we both cannot sleep at night. My wife has never taken disability in her life and they refuse to give her even two weeks. We could have to rush to the ER at anytime because the doctor said they could just drop back down at any time. She needs time to rest and recover and come to terms with what is going on. Isn't medical leave for getting healthy? I am assuming Kaiser penalizes their doctors for giving disability because like I said we have heard this same story from many friends and family. We will be telling every person we know to stay away from Kaiser where they truly dont care.

The doctor that Kaiser had me see had the worst bedside manner I have ever seen. He was rude and off putting and made it clear he could not help me.
All physicians, pharmacy and diagnostics are in the same location. It sounds convenient but it is far from it. Upon arrival, all patients check in at the same place. Expect a line. When you finally make it to the window, you will be asked to prepay for your copayment, parking and anything else. It's strange to pay before you have met the doctor or been diagnosed, but okay. Should the doctor prescribe medication, you head back down to the same line, where you again prepay and take the receipt to another line, where you wait in queue to submit your prescription. You cannot take your prescription outside, which was odd to me until I saw what this sham company bills Medicare for their ‘services’. They bill Medicare twice what typical HMO would, which should outrage any taxpayer.
If you travel, you will find that the coverage is sparse and only offered in a few markets. I found it impossible to find a doctor when I traveled to Texas over the summer, another drawback for me. I called to cancel the plan and was advised to write a letter and fax it in. I did so. The following month my premium was deducted from my account, I called in and again faxed a letter to unenroll. You guessed it... I was billed again, and again, and again.
I have gone to Kaiser and had their staff fax the unenrollment, I have filed numerous grievances, I have spoken with supervisor after supervisor. I was promised a refund of all the premiums paid from the date that I could prove that I unenrolled, and they STILL continue to deduct premiums and act brand new every single time I call. When GH switched to Kaiser, everything changed. Pre-approvals for almost everything, (that delays treatment,) and they would no longer cover her infusions. After 4 appeals, they would cover the medication itself, but not her in-hospital infusions.
They first told me we would have to take my daughter to their partner infusion centers, but those did not accept patients under the age of 18. (This was my discovery after hours and hours on the phone with them, for a few weeks, fighting and appealing twice with her rheumatologist’s help, trying to find out where our then 10-yr-old could get her infusions. Off meds, and risking joint damage and blindness due to uveitis!!!)
Our only other option was to have a nurse come to our home, and deliver a several-hours-long infusion to her of a medication that is in a family of medicines that she’s had an allergic reaction to. There aren’t many meds for JA, and ** is one of the best. In the hospital we always premed with allergy meds and nurses watch her like a hawk. They record every sneeze and look for rash and reaction. Kaiser confirmed that if she had an allergic reaction in-home with the nurse, they would have to transport her to the ER, in an ambulance, and that we would have to pay for that!!!! NOT SAFE at all, and ridiculous for out-of-pocket expense!
We made the tough decision, with my daughter’s rheumatologist, that switching medication was safer. She had to go to an extremely painful injection of a different medication every other week at home, not even knowing if this med would control her JA as well as the **. She pukes with painful shots. Finally, even to get a hold of a receptionist to book an appointment takes 30 minutes holding on the phone, because Kaiser’s policy is patients can be on hold up to 30 minutes.

The most pathetic tactic a business or organization can use against its clients is to simply not reply to clients’ calls, letters or emails about their concerns. The latest example in my experience is with the Kaiser Permanente HMO. In a phone conversation, one of their grievance case managers, Lauren **, told me she would ensure that a past problem of Kaiser sending mail to the wrong address would not resurface. The problem did resurface. So I called her and left voicemail messages three times over a two week period in August, 2019. She did not return my calls (yet it is her JOB to return clients’ calls). So I wrote a letter to Kaiser’s CEO, Bernard Tyson. This strategy usually produces results. But not this time. No one replied to my letter.
So I sent letters to three members of Kaiser’s management team with COPIES to some influential individuals, including a U.S. congressman and a California state senator. It is pitiful that a client has to go to such lengths just to persuade Kaiser to RESPOND to phone calls and a letter. In my letters, I requested apologies and explanations for Kaiser’s ignoring my previous letter and phone calls, and I asked if they condone or condemn Lauren ** (their grievance resolution agent) ignoring my calls. Finally, in late September, I have received a call from a Kaiser employee telling me he will investigate my concerns. I will keep you posted on developments.

All Doctors & Specialists are employees of Kaiser, making referrals simple. The on-line accessibility to your entire health care records, doctors, messages, appointments and much more is seamlessly available to you. Kaiser has exploded with the influx of patients that now it takes months to schedule routine appointments and if it's a specialist it takes even longer. They have too many patients and not enough good doctors who care, who are willing to do the testing and investigate reported symptoms. I've had neck and back pain for about a year and a half along with some other concerning symptoms. When I told my PCP and psychologist this I was told I was too young to have these issues and was dismissed without further testing. I've since switched to Emory and raised the same concerns to my PCP she has since referred me to rheumatologist who has ordered a panel of blood test that came back positive for autoimmune disorders. All I can think about is that I could've gotten this under control earlier had Kaiser bothered to care... or adequately done their jobs at all.

We have name changed me and my husband and they should have the new name tied with our S S N and new health care card, However, they messed our account by having more than one name and at the end they sent our account to collection by accident even we were paying payment plan and one of the staff her name is Christie was talking to me very rude and doesn't like to listen and she keep cutting me while I am talking and she is aware that they charged me and also they sent the whole account to collection and asking us to pay again and I told her that this is double dip of the account and you should review what we paid against what you have in collection and she said we are not bringing the account from collection and you need to pay it as soon as possible. PLEASE Can anybody help us? Thanks,

I switched jobs to a company that offers employees coverage through Kaiser, I figured it would be fine, I was wrong. First of all, the system is convoluted and confusing. They don’t tell you that you have to pick a PCP before you go in for an appointment. Secondly, it’s not convenient to do anything. You have to use their pharmacies, labs, etc., no more just visiting your nearest Walgreens. My biggest issue is with the physicians insisting on unnecessary, extraneous tests. I’ve been on a medication for the better part of a decade, same dose, never had any problems. When I visited a Kaiser doctor to get refills she insisted that I have blood work done and required that I see a psychiatrist to make sure I really had the medical condition I’ve been treated for successfully for many years.
I provided all of my previous records but I guess Kaiser doctors think they know more than other MD’s. When I told her that I felt these things were unnecessary she refused to fill my medication. I would rather self pay to see my old doctor than have to suffer through tests and visits I don’t need through Kaiser. Kaiser doctors are merely sales people trying to add on things to make themselves more money. They don’t have your well-being in mind, it’s all about money. Beware!

My child has ADHD, and takes medication which can only be dispensed for 28 days at a time. They used to mail the medication to our home, as long as there was an adult to sign for it. They discontinued this practice, then they closed the closest pharmacy to our home. The closest pharmacy/clinic is now an hour away. Refilled the medication online and went down the day after it said it would be available. The man at the counter told me it had been cancelled by the doctor and I would have to call. He said it had been filled on the 17th, but cancelled on the 29th. I asked why a prescription would be cancelled after a week and he said, "Oh that's longer than a week." Then he realized his error, but still had no answers.
I resubmitted the request online. My husband drove down again to pick up the pills and was only given one prescription, of course not the one we needed. I went online and see that the drug is once again listed as available to fill. Contact the doctor's office who tells me that the interruptions to her prescriptions are not their fault-which may be correct, but is not very helpful when my child has now run out of her prescription, and we've wasted four hours trying to get them. Sitting on hold now trying to order them for the third time. I hate Kaiser and I wish companies would stop using them for insurance.

To add insult to injury, rarely do you even get to SEE your PCP; instead you are shunted-off to a P.A. that 'treats' you like a brand-new patient and seemingly knows NOTHING about your situation. These are not missed premiums or copays. They are the percentage owed from provider visits going back to 2014. Kaiser won’t discuss it with me and they insist they emailed my bill to me. Evergreen has never sent me a bill either. I believe they are operating illegally. I have turned Kaiser in to the Insurance Commissioners office and am planning to file a complaint with the Better Business Office as well. First, let me say that my experience with Kaiser while in Southern California has been fine. But beware their response if you're out of town. While I was in Illinois in an area with no Kaiser operations, I suffered a detached retina. These can cause permanent blindness if not treated quickly, but Kaiser decided it was not an emergency and denied coverage. They seemed focused on the fact that I went to an eye doctor instead of an emergency room. If you had a sudden vision problem, where would you go? The emergency room would send you to an eye doctor, and there would be an additional bill. So, even though I'm paying premiums that exceed the cost of the surgery to save my sight, Kaiser decided I should get nothing. Keep in mind that something similar could happen to you.

I went in the second time, and was seen by a doctor who told me that my ** birth control was not correctly inserted the first time. She continued to pull and tug on it, to the point to where I passed out from force and trauma. There were a few different nurses in the room when I passed out to help me, however once 5:00 hit (closing time) there were only 2 left in the room, plus the scheduler. The doctor came back in and said that because I was not stable, they could not let me drive home. I said my ride wouldn't show up for about 30 mins. One of the nurses mentioned that since it was closing time, they could not keep me in their department. They asked if it was okay they take me to the ER, and I was hesitant because I knew I could not afford an ER visit.
I asked if they would charge me to keep me in the ER and she said yes. She proceeded to "look-up" what it would cost me for my er visit and quoted me $420, so I agreed. The nurse that was assigned to me recommended that I get an EKG done, so I agreed. I was in the ER for a little over an hour and was billed $1233. I don't mind paying for the work I got done during my visit but to add a $3000 fee to JUST BE IN THE ER is overly excessive, especially because I was never placed in a hospital room. Just in the hallway. I never received my new birth control, I never received any results in regards to my EKG, however I did receive a bill 3x's the amount quoted!
Also, filed a grievance for this and the case managers response was that he thought I did not understand my deductible, and that he contacted the supervisor and she said that there is NO WAY a nurse could quote me a visit to the ER. Not only did they scam me during my visit, they also would not return my phone calls on this issue and did not mail me the appeal form as I requested. WORST INSURANCE AND CARE PROVIDERS EVER. I plan on canceling my insurance with them and would rather pay the gov for not having insurance the rest of the year.

Like another reviewer, I have been with Kaiser for a few years and used to be a fan. This past month (since July 22nd) I was in pain and tried to get into my doctor, there were no appointments with him or my OBG (only for October...). I went through 4 courses of 4 antibiotics, each doctor I visited (5 paid visits until I saw my own primary doctor, plus a 6th visit with him and a 7th visit to collect samples because they never do and keep giving me the runaround). The problem has not gone away. The random doctors don’t know the history and each one says something completely different. At one point, a "phone doctor" told me that maybe if I stopped drinking so much water, I would not use the restroom that much! WHAT???
Extremely upset. Contacted member services and filed cases but they all say, "Oh we're so sorry, we hope you can be seen and get better." Great. That does not help. Yesterday in my hopefully last visit, I had to BEG to be checked for 2 infections, because I was told I could only check ONE of them per visit. WHAT?? This is a total lack of respect with the patients. I can only imagine people suffering from serious issues (even though UTIs/womens issues can be unbearable once you're past a whole month living with it). I will be switching health insurance as soon as I can but wanted to leave a formal complaint somewhere else other than the Kaiser Customer "care". I really like my PCP but since it's impossible to talk directly to him, it's unfortunate.

At 62 I have worked for 48 years of my life, 41 years as a grocery checker. I am 5'9" which means I lean forward, neck and head dropped down, shoulders and arms reaching. My mid back has hurt for 25 years, most likely from work and getting worse by the year. 7 1/2 years ago I crashed head first into a wall from a motorized scooter, it was sort of the final straw. MRI's, x-rays, CT's, all point to deteriorating discs, degenerative arthritis, bone spurs etc.. Within 3 hours at work I am in miserable pain. My personal quality of life is horrible.
I have requested 4 things from Kaiser. 1. Temporary disability (5 months) until the end of this year when I will retire - so I don't have to continue suffering or end up getting hurt at work. 2. Therapeutic massage - to realign the damage done from leaning for 41 years. 3. Yoga and swim membership - to heal my back to the best it can be. 4. Possible breast reduction - I am unable to wear a bra/sports bra/spaghetti strap for support and they pull on my neck and back.
What is Kaisers solution? No, no, no and no. Dr. #1 offered modified duty at work - there is nothing modified, and after 41 years THIS is what I do. Dr. #2 offered injections into my neck which will work for 1-3 months, since I have high blood sugars the injections are a threat to my health which he either did not pay attention to or care about. And physical therapy a couple times a week which is a 40 minute drive each way, only available during the day, more gas than I can afford and probably a co-pay again. If I was trying to screw the disability system I would have done so many many years ago, like perhaps sometime in the past 48 years.
What I have learned about Kaiser is they are extremely generous with prescriptions and ridiculously strict with time off work (as an example this past year I had the cold from h*ll for 3 ½ weeks for which I received 3 days off work. I had customers complain to my manager about how sick I was and they didn't want me touching their food). It seems pretty obvious that there is far more money in pharmaceuticals and co-pays and possibly a kickback for keeping people working no matter what. I have told them I am unable to exercise due to being beat to ** from excessive working. I have told them that I am in miserable pain due to excessive working. They refuse to HEAR me. It is basically this.... If I go in to full blown diabetes I am coming back after them for negligence. If I get hurt at work I am coming back after them for negligence. This is by far the least care I have ever received from the medical field.

I signed up for KP hoping that I can receive same level of treatment including my anticoagulant medication, but what a surprise - they don't allow it and tried to switch me to cheap one with several FDA alerts linked to major occurrences of common side effects. Reasoning that I stayed on my current medication works for me and I don't have any side effects doesn't convinced them. Also they failed to get my medical records from previous medical provider and stated that they don't see valid reason for me to be on my current medication. Any way KP insurance is about the same price as any others, but level of service is much lower. And again, they don't care about you and willing to deny treatment to you, they care to make as much as possible on you. Washington state is no place for this insurance and hospitals.

These complications have prevented my husband from qualifying for a kidney transplant, even though he has a matching live donor.
In my personal experience, Kaiser is now delaying or denying care that they previously provided. Secondly- I went into the clinic to see a new primary care doctor, and SPECIFICALLY ASKED for a breast exam at my appointment, which was my yearly preventative health check up. I told her I was experiencing pain and was concerned. She told me that KP doesn't bother to do breast exams anymore, as they turn up nothing. I told her that my friend just had a lump found in an exam (not at your clinic, clearly) and it was cancer (her reply was "well now I feel stupid"). I have been using KP for several years as it is the cheapest coverage offered through my employer, but being a customer has been a very poor experience. I have gone through about four physicians so far. The first was ok regarding competency but lacked interest in my medical treatment, generally. It was like talking to a brick wall. He left eventually, and I had to choose another. The second doctor was good (my nurse recommended), but during a call to customer service one day a customer service representative accidentally deleted me from his service; I couldn't be added back because as one of the few good doctors he was no longer accepting new patients.
The third doctor I perceived as biased and uncaring towards those of certain races and gender. He literally brushed me off when I asked him for help documenting my illness for my job apparently because he was my new doctor. I guess he didn't see my years of medical records at KP with KP doctors as reliable for use in the simple medical documentation I requested, which only asked that he verify I had some type of serious disability...no details were even required. The current one seems uncaring and fake as well; she emails me with lab results and says to let her know if I have questions then ignores my questions. She forgot to order some labs during my last physical so KP sent me a weird message to get the tests done weeks later. I didn't bother trying to figure out what they wanted me to do and will just switch to one of the more expensive companies next year... especially due to my experience with my OB.
My OB refuses to help me cope with my fibroid-related pain with medicine apparently due to KP prescription guidelines related to addressing opioids abuse so, barring surgical methods that may result in infertility, I am forced to suffer excruciating pain about four days per month that is very debilitating. I asked for just a small prescription like three pain pills per 30 days or something low like that since it takes at least four days to become addicted to opioids, but I was denied. Instead I was prescribed a birth control that is supposed to stop menstruation, but of course those who have tried that may know that doesn't actually work for many women, me included. Up to half of ** women like me have fibroids. Women of color like me also have higher mortality rates with childbirth often due to doctors that do not care about our pain, discomfort, or well-being. I wonder how many go without fibroid pain treatment.
In light of this experience with my OB, a ** woman herself, I don't want to even risk being stuck under KP while pregnant in the future. KP customer service also overbilled me for two separate services last year. I sent a letter and documentation that I already paid what I owed, and they completely ignored it. They have been sending me those bills for the past year, and I refuse to pay it until they acknowledge my letters. Don't bother with them. Not worth the pain you will inevitably go through.

My medical records in CA being visible to all departments I needed to interact with was one of the big advantages of Kaiser. Here setting up a first Endoc meeting they have no idea who I am or my history.
So they asked me to jump through hoops pre-appointment that are nearly 3 decades irrelevant for me (post-op transsexual). Having already gone through my transition I don't really need anything except my normal hormones that are very little different than for any post-menopausal woman on HRT. Despite advertising understanding and treating folks like me I am running into a deep lack of knowledge and wrote completely irrelevant in my case procedure. I also don't appreciate being weighed every single time, especially if I am going for something unrelated. Additionally, if you are in pain, you have to beg for medication and hope that what they give you is enough.
I went to the doctor because I broke my leg. She sent me home without any medicine or x-ray and told me to come back in a week if it wasn't better. In the mean time, every time I turned over in bed while sleeping it felt like I was re-breaking it or breaking it more. I am not an addict, I needed pain medication. I hardly ever see the doctor, it shouldn't be a battle. I pay them for service and care. I would rather keep my money and put it into savings and go the ER when I have a problem. Furthermore, I have a horrible job that causes a lot of stress and problems. I went to a counselor just to be listened to and find a way to handle stress. I was misdiagnosed as having depression. Now it is on my record. I don't have depression, don't take medication for it, I just have a horrible job that I can't get out of. Overall, I have had poor treatment by both nurses and some doctors as well as in general poor service at Kaiser.

If you're a fan of form letters stating they are sorry for having not lived up to your expectations, a fan of the buck being passed, unable to be assigned a patient advocate (doesn't exist in the Kaiser realm) or not being treated AT ALL, then Kaiser is for you!!! I have been trying for months to get a female oncologist, who speaks English (as her native language - too much medical terminology to deal with any more accents). Who can fathom there is life outside of Kaiser. It's not possible. You file complaints and they keep being bounced around, vs one person handling it. Case "managers" are mere clerks. Talk about a figurative title; they have no power to do anything and they can barely accurately assess the situation.
The oncology departments deal with a scheduling coordinator. When a patient asks for a 15-minute appointment to assess the doctor, an hour appointment isn't called for. How can a doctor be assessed if we're not given access to do so. Their testing is all cookie-cutter. Every cancer patient, with a certain cancer is giving the "national standard". They disregard mitigating factors, underlying family history and unique specifications. They are great for wanting to order tests vs using just one test and one copay. Anything to line their purse strings!
If Kaiser would get it through their heads that sometimes a dedicated medical, not various case "managers" would be in the best interest of the patient, we actually might get care! You know, because battling stage 3 cancer isn't challenging enough... Let's deal with a "provider" who thinks your disease is like everyone else's. Not like cancer patients have enough to deal with. Kaiser: You are NOT in charge - the PATIENT is!!! Try helping them instead of hiding behind 'standard procedure' and listen to what they are saying! And I wait... Bet I die before they end up doing anything useful.

Unfortunately I don't usually go out of my way to leave bad reviews. Just can't let this go without letting others know before they choose Kaiser Permanente as their insurance. As a family that is self-employed and pays out of pocket we chose to leave Blue Cross Blue Shield to save some money. Turns out it is the biggest mistake we have made.
The doctors are bound to stringent rules and generic guidelines that don't allow them to treat patients as individuals. This has shown up time and again. This morning my husband called to get authorization to go out of network for physical therapy at Kaiser doctors urging. My husband works out of town and is not near any Kaiser facility. Was told that they NEVER authorize out of network providers. Period. The person was rude and condescending. Horrible experience. Don't even know what our $1400 a month premium pays for. DO NOT CONSIDER KAISER PERMANENTE. Open enrollment can't come soon enough.

I am very disappointed with Kaiser. I have had debilitating migraines for years that cause me to have to take a leave of absence at work. The doctor didn’t want to backdate my work status and so I couldn’t file for temp disability. They basically act like you are lying to them and don’t believe what you are saying. I’ve never had an issue with getting a work note backdated with any other health insurance. I even told them I’d lose my job without the note but they could care less. All they want to do is pump you with drugs before they send you to a specialist. The lacking of compassion towards the patient is proof that Kaiser doctors are like robots. Being a doctor is more than just prescribing meds. You have to have empathy and compassion for your patients. All these doctors care about is their paycheck and not their patients.

I’ve been with them for almost 2 years now and if my employer provided better options for insurance carriers I would go with the latter. My experience so far has been poor. I would consider myself pretty healthy. However, I had a medical crisis occur during my time with them and this is when their true colors came out. If you need mental health services and/or have medical conditions outside of giving birth PLEASE DO NOT CHOOSE KAISER!!!! They are terrible! Nurses and staff are mediocre at best and unhelpful. Customer service is subpar. Sometimes you’ll get good service and sometimes you get someone who shouldn’t be interacting with people at all. I’ve had better service at the free clinic. At least at the free clinic you know it’s basic, but Kaiser will slap lipstick on a ** and call it a beauty queen.
With regard to services offered? It’s great that they’re all under one roof? But the flaw is that they’re mediocre at best. Specialty clinics are NOT conducive to a thorough process. They want you in out in 10-20 mins max. Forget about talking with the doctor about your concerns and next steps, they don’t have time for you! Literally, they don’t, they have 50 people waiting to be seen.
Finally, upon my first visit with my new primary doctor, they asked me if I had any medical concerns? When I replied and stated them, my doctor basically said, "You should probably go to another place because Kaiser isn’t a place where you could get that type of service!" Wow?! Lmao! Thank you doctor! I will finally listen to you and will gladly be switching back to PPO at the end of this year! Bye bye Kaiser!

Can't say overall experience since I've only been with KP for 7 weeks. What I can tell you is the heath care company does "bait and switch" claiming you can pick your own primary doctor only to find out the good ones are all full and not taking any new patients. Furthermore, KP shows some doctors as open for patients but when you apply - you find out they are not accepting new patients. Bottom line - you cannot pick your own family doctor with Kaiser. It’s a JOKE.

With Kaiser I am locked into using their pharmacy. They charge more than double for certain prescriptions than at all other pharmacies I checked. They must figure we got him locked in, we can charge whatever we want. Billings for medical services are very opaque. You never know what they invoice for and who is adding to your invoices. It seems everybody at Kaiser gets a shot at getting to the trough. I am currently fighting with them to get detailed bills. I am almost sure they are wrong, because they send me more expensive antibiotics at $250/dose then were called for. No way to check it though because all I get are statements that say "send us money" with no detail. There are charges by doctors that I have no idea who they are or what they have done for me.

So, I had this thing on my chest, I thought it was an ingrown hair. It kept getting bigger, and bigger. I tried warm compresses, the scab would come off, I'd clean it with hydrogen peroxide. It didn't hurt but it just kept getting bigger. I've got a 5 day river trip coming up and 3 days before my departure date. I figured that I'd better do something. On my lunch break on Tuesday I made an appointment with my general practitioner (who I hadn't seen in 8 years) I couldn't believe it. I was able to get an appointment at 10:00 on Wednesday!
I go to see my doctor, Sankari **, MD in San Ramon, Ca. She is the most personable doctor I've ever had, we chatted like old friends, seriously, I might invite her and her family over for a BBQ. She looked at my chest and determined that it would need to be surgically removed. She scheduled me an appointment with WS * MD at Kaiser in Walnut Creek for 1:30 that same day! I went to see Dr. **. He looked at it and said that he would schedule a surgery. His assistant pointed out that he had about 20 minutes, right now. They had me in a operation room in less that 10 minutes and 15 minutes later a marble sized cyst was removed from my chest and I was stitched up. I know things don't always go this smoothly but all involved knew that I needed to get this done in a hurry and made it happen.

Do not ask for your copayment info at any Kaiser facility. I was told first I had a 40.00 copay from my primary. Later at the Therapy Clinic I was referred to was told there would be no copay. :) Three sessions later I receive a bill that really hurt! I would have never gone in the first place. Much more than I would have paid at my last therapy clinic. Incompetence and bad communication.
