I am getting a little angry with AHS. I have been calling AHS and the Contractor for a month now about my washer. I have been put on hold and I have been told we will call you back. Here it is Feb. 6, 2014 and I have yet to get my washer fix. AHS is still taking my monthly payments. I am getting to the point to wanting to take LEGAL action. I have taken off work for the contractor to fix it and I have been going to the Laundromat to pay $5 to $20 to wash and dry clothes each time for a month now.

This is money well spent. I would recommend AHS service to anyone who has bought a home either new or old. The money you pay for the service call alone is worth it. It gives you a sense of ease to know if something isn't working right that you can make a simple call to AHS. They'll have someone call you ASAP to schedule an appointment to check your concern. I plan on keeping AHS for a long time.

My experience was excellent. When I submitted the request, I was contacted immediately both by Home Shield and the contractor assigned to the repair. The repair was completed in a timely manner. Then there was follow-up by Home Shield to verify the work was completed and the repair was to my satisfaction. I have only had positive results from all requests for repairs.

The good thing with Ahs is that you don't have to speak to a representative to schedule your repair. I like doing it online and their listing of the appliances and its brand are all there, you just have to make a few clicks and you're done. The repair service rep calls within 24 hours to schedule the service at your convenience. Another thing I like about Ahs is that the contractors I have dealt with are all professionals, and they give tips so you know how to maintain your appliances.

It was the day before Christmas. All the children were home on Winter Break and the dryer broke. AHS contacted a company to come fix our dryer and we were told it would be mid-January until a service person would be available. Imagine the laundry back up, ugh! I contacted AHS customer service and they quickly engaged a secondary company that would come out on New Year's Eve. The repair was done quickly and professionally. Thank you AHS for saving me from 3 weeks of going to a laundrymat.

We have all the appliances and systems in the house covered by American Home Shield. Their people are very courteous. They're always pretty fast, sometimes it takes them a while to get somebody out here but that isn't their fault. Very very nice people to deal with. They have covered everything that we have asked them to cover, air conditioner... We've had some problems with the refrigerator but they repaired the problem... Dishwasher, they repaired those problems...

Plumbing, we've had monstrous plumbing problems and they've repaired those without ever a question except if it was covered. At one point we had something that was the city's issue and they didn't cover that, naturally, but other than that they've been great to deal with. I really have been happy with them and we've renewed every year that we've lived here. I have recommended them to friends.

AHS sent out four separate "service" contractors to repair my Viking dishwasher. One repair person showed up twice under two separate companies which was concerning then claimed he was never at the house 2 weeks prior. All the repair companies have told me one thing about the repair needed then told AHS a different story.

The first repair company claimed they had to order a replacement part then changed their story several days later and said it was due to improper installation (the unit is over 5 years old). The second company said there was nothing wrong, the third company said it was a bad control panel and bad water valve then told AHS that they cannot work on the unit. The fourth company which was the same repair guy from the second company called Viking directly and Viking told him the entire electrical needs to be replaced in the unit.

After over a month of this back and forth there has been no resolution. The customer service agent from AHS rarely returns my phone calls and I have now asked to speak with a Manager which I am getting the run around about as well.

I never had any problem with American Home Shield. I got their plan where I paid $41 a month that covers everything, my appliances, plumbing, electrical and all that. I had a problem with my hot water heater and when the guy came out he didn't try to sell me hot water, he just came out and said "okay, let me see it", just that, check if everything's okay. He was able to fix it and probably didn't take a little more than 20-25 minutes to get everything back up and running. You can't beat American Home Shield, it's excellent.

I would like to say that once posting, I was promptly contacted by a Customer Service representative from American Home Shield. She was above reproach in every single business dealing. She personally worked with me and my personal heating and cooling contractor to remedy the concerns that were registered. My personal contractor also felt once we landed in her area that we were able to move forward with replacement of the furnace.

We did have some extra leg work to do which we (the contractor and I ) both felt was needed to evaluate what was actually wrong with the furnace like diagnosis and what had become damaged and what kinds of costs were associated with these numerous repairs vs a new one; and our representative assigned to us was most professional in all of her dealings with both of us; she was an excellent resource and guide through this. She was very empathetic at getting things done correctly. My faith in AHS is fully restored. I can give them a full 5 stars now!

8 days later I am still not any closer to having my furnace fixed or replaced.. Just seem to get a different person every time I call. The contractor that was sent actually damaged my furnace. I insisted on another contractor. None. Allowed to use my own, but huge failure in communication area. 12 inches of snow and plummeting temps and a furnace that won't stay working and now leaks water. Huge disappointment.

We had a pool pump leaking water. We contacted AHS and they sent a person to repair it. The pump was replaced and a few weeks later, our filter started leaking. The pool person that was sent told us that this sometimes happens because when the pressure is restored then other parts fail. So the bottom part of our pool filter was replaced but the technician broke one of the connectors when reinstalling and just used silicon to fix what he had broken. A few weeks later, the replaced pump was leaking again. We called and now the pool place was saying that we ran the pump dry and that is why it was broken. AHS took that position and will now refuses to fix anything. We have been loyal customers for over 11 years and I am shocked that they treat their customers this way. Right now, the equipment is lying dismantled in the yard. I have covered it to protect it until I can get someone to follow up. AHS has not responded yet.

I have no complaints. They did exactly what they were. I was apprehensive that a repair company that was being paid by a warranty company would not act like my conventional repair company, and they were better.

I had another home warranty in the past and it was a disaster. It actually turned into a federal class action and I got all my money back from the warranty company. But with American Home Warranty I have had no issues. And I did have a warranty issue a month and a half after I bought it, and there was no problem. We have had AHS for 10 +/- years. When we lived in or near a city we always had excellent service, however, when we moved to small town TX things changed. Before too long they were requiring us to find someone to service the problem, then pay them, then send the bill to AHS. They in turn would reimburse us but then subtract the service fee. Mind you they did not reduce our annual contract fee. We still were paying the same fee plus the service charge while they did nothing. Apparently they cannot use yellow pages or other means to find someone to do the work but they feel perfectly ok charging as if they were providing the full service for which we contracted. My home came up with American Home Shield when I purchased it in 2008 and I just extended it. So far it's been pretty good. The only issue that I had this whole time was the plumbing. The provider that they sent was rude. I had a huge tree up front and there were tree roots in my line. So he came, stuck a hammer down the drain and then he pulled it back and then he explained, "You need a new steel pipe out front. It's going to cost $5,500. We can start the work on Tuesday." This was on a Friday and I'm like I don't have $5,500 right now. He then goes, "Fine. I have to pull it back and take pictures and let them know and they're going to refuse your coverage on it" ... His response was just unprofessional in my opinion and I wasn't pleased with that. That's why I got in touch with American Home Shield concerning that.

I also had my dishwasher repaired. The guy was nice and professional. He came when he was supposed to. Although he said he would call before he got here and he called like an hour before and said he'll be there in the next hour or two and he showed up without calling back. He left the old part that he took out of the dishwasher on my kitchen floor so I had to dispose of it. I was just surprised that he left the part here. It's been a great experience and I've had other situations where I had emergencies and they responded right away and helped me out so I was happy about that. They do their best.

I have had my AHS warranty for more than two years. The first time I requested service was for my HVAC in Oct. 2013. The guy came out, looked at the main source and just said it was dirty. Nothing else was done. The service call was $100.00. Last month a major part of my HVAC burnt out. I called AHS and they said that I would have to wait until Monday to get a service person. My family was without heat for four days. I also have minor children in the house and a baby. So I called a local guy to come out and fix it.

The second request was last month, January 2014, for a plumber to check my garbage disposal that was backing up into the other sink. The guy put some ice in the sink, ran the disposal and said nothing was wrong with it. He did nothing more. That was also $100.00. The disposal still backs up into the other sink. I complained to AHS about this and they did nothing to assist me and denied a refund of $100.00 and still expected me to pay for the warranty for last month which I cancelled when they would not send someone out to fix my HVAC. They are a horrible company and I would not recommend them to anyone. They just take your money.

I liked what I was reading about it. I've only had two claims. One was with my air conditioner and they sent service out really well. The serviceman was very nice and he did well. The only thing I didn't like was when I had trouble with my washing machine and I told them what was wrong with it over the phone.

When the technician called me, and he didn't bring the items to fix my washing machine. He had to go back and order them, which he worked with Sears and my dryer was - it wasn't my washing machine. The only thing that my dryer needed was a belt. So I felt like he had access to it and he just had to come back and delay me for a couple more days, and I didn't like that. But that was the only thing. I like American Home Shield because you don’t have to worry about taking things and hauling things away to a technician so they could fix it. The technician comes to you. They’re good. I never have luck with Sears. Every time I called, I say to them I do not want Sears. They always try to give me Sears when I have an appliance. They say for some reason they have to do Sears first. And then I say that they're always late and I can't say they do a great job. It always takes them at least two or three days to come out. But I had the best experience with one that I can't remember the name. The best repair person ever, I ever had. The guy was a gentleman. He fixed my refrigerator and it never worked better, even when it was new.

I heard about American Home Shield through the internet and may have tried a couple of others years ago but I pretty much stuck with American Home Shield for the last number of years. I've had very good experience. All the contractors that have been sent have done their job. They're dependable, professional (I don't think I have ever had to call anybody back the second time for a fix they didn't make right) and responsive. A lot of things I do, I can do right on the internet with them which is very convenient.

I got a home warranty to make sure that when something broke, I could call somebody and pay a little fee and it could be fixed. I'm an old American Home Shield customer and they pissed me off and I let it go when I first got my house. Then, I decided I needed to get it back. Since going back to them, the experience has been great. When you call them, they come out and fix it and you pay the fee and that's it.

The dishwasher started leaking on 12/23/2013 and American Home Shield was contacted. The repair person American Home Shield sent was from Big Bill's Appliances. They observed the leak and said they had to order parts, which would take 5-7 days as they had to order the parts through American Home Shield. After 2 weeks I called American Home Shield to check on the status. They contacted the repair person and said the parts had not been ordered and it would take another 5-7 days.

On 1/21/2014, the repair person returned and installed the parts. I asked them if they were going to stay through a cycle of the dishwasher to ensure everything was working properly. They said which everything they replaced, it would not leak. On the morning of 1/22/2014, I ran the dishwasher so I could be there to check for leaks and it started to leak again. I called American Home Shield to report the issue and they said they would have to send the repair person back out to verify. I sent the Customer Service rep an email with a photo of the leak on the floor in front of the dishwasher - there was no acknowledgement of the email. The repair person did not return until Friday, 01/24/2014 and did observe the leak They said to let it run and they would return.

After several hours, the repair person had not returned and I called them. The repair person, asked "Didn't American Home Shield call you?" I said no and the repair person said American Home Shield "Authorization Department" was going to replace the dishwasher. The repair person said they asked American Home Shield if she should call me back and was told by American Home Shield that they would contact me directly, which they did not.

I received an email on 1/24/2014 from American Home Shield at Sears.com with a generic service message. I called Sears at the number from the email and they asked if I was having an issue with an appliance. I referred to the email and explained the history and they said they were to come out to provide a "second opinion" on the dishwasher - and they could not come out until Monday 02/10/2014 which was over 2 weeks.

I called American Home Shield on about the issue with Sears and the overall handling on 0/1/28/2014 and asked to speak to a supervisor. After a frustrating discussion with a poor customer service representative, who refused to refer me to a supervisor and wanted to recount the entire history to confirm all of the entries which were already on his screen from the service dispatch record, he finally said since this was pending for longer than 30 days, it would be referred to the Research Department, which was "higher than a supervisor." I was told I would be contacted by a Researcher within 24 hours and provided with the person's name and direct telephone extension. After 24 hours of not being contacted, I called back on 01/29/2014 to see when the Researcher would be calling me. I was told by that customer service person that it's 24-48 hours, rather than 24 hours as I had initially been told.

On 01/30/2014, Michella at extension ** left a voice mail message on that she was the Researcher. I called her back within 10 mins and left her a voice mail message requesting a call back. I called her extension 6 times throughout the rest of the business day (ending at 6:00pm CST) and each time got the message that she was either away from her desk or on another call and to please leave a message - she would call back at her earliest convenience. At 9:15 am CST on 01/31/2014, I called Michella's extension and again received the voice mail message. I left her another message, referencing her call and my previous message, again requesting a call. After trying her extension throughout the day without success, I left another message for Michella at approximately 4:20 pm CST on 01/31/2014 requesting a call back.

I called the main American Home Shield number and waited on hold until a Customer Service person answered and explained the situation and the lack of follow up from the Research Department. The Customer Service person seemed to understand the frustration and, after a few minutes on hold to review all of the notes in her computer, told me she sent an email to both the Researcher and her supervisor about my call. The Customer Service person said that was all they could do, as the Research Department was the highest entity in American Home Shield service. I asked her to send the Research Department supervisor another message with a specific request to call me this evening.

The consequences, in summary, have been the dishwasher covered under the warranty from American Home Shield has been unusable since the leak was discovered and reported to American Home Shield on 12/23/2013. As of 01/31/2014, I cannot obtain a return call from the Research Department at American Home Shield to explain what the status of my service request is, specifically why Sears, as a second repair company, is being sent after 3 visits by the first repair company American Home Shield sent out and why Sears is taking until 02/10/2014 to respond to the tasking on 01/24/2014 from American Home Shield. It seems that American Home Shield does not want to address an appliance covered under their warranty and is making the process exceedingly difficult and time consuming so, I, as the customer, will become frustrated and repair it on my own.

One Friday evening I come home to a busted water heater, called AHS, took 49 minutes to get a rep on the phone, it's now 8 pm. She tells me she is trying to reach a plumber, of course no one is available. My midnight I call back...thing holding...(horrible music) same answer. I called Saturday morning, hold again...this time 37 minutes. Finally, here come the plumber, by now we have had to turn off the water from the main water line, so there's no running water in the house. Plumber states it's going to cost us an out of pocket of $680, because without AHS it's $1200...Oh of course I am not paying that. I asked for CSR to have the Payout dept call me, of course they didn't, even after I called back each day up until Wednesday, but that same Plumber was on his way to my home to repair the water heater on Wednesday, because AHS took the plumber's word over mines and I am the one who pays them every month.

By Thursday, I get a call from the Payout dept saying they can offer me $277 for the water heater and labor. ARE YOU KIDDING ME...that's doesn't even cover the water heater! The CSR states that they only pay $169 for water heaters and $65 for Labor to the plumber, so that's why he's trying to charge me an additional $680, ($80 for a ball valve...really) it's $8 at Home Depot- plus the $75 service fee to tell me what I already knew...I need another water heater. I have had AHS for 9 years and every time it's something...They sent the same company out twice to look at my A/C in the summer and they both said the same thing...but of course they are from the same company. AHS isn't protecting anything but themselves. They are scammers!! I have so many friends tell me this same thing...so this will be my last month with them! If this is all they are going to do for the consumer who pays monthly payments for 9 years and has only made about 4 claims...I'm out! I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. I have read that other contractors are asked to deny claims.

I've had them out twice for the dishwasher, and they keep saying we're using too much soap, or this and that. That dishwasher needs to be replaced. I think they have a problem when they have to replace stuff. But the people that they send out for my garage doors have been excellent. And the people that they sent out for plumbing is excellent. With replacing items, it seems like that they'll try to find any way not to do it before they have to replace it. Otherwise, everything is fine.

I was a subscriber to AHS for services, I had an issue with the air conditioner and duct work in my home. The customer service reps were rude each time I had to call to inform them that their service technician did not show up for the scheduled job, when the techs did show they always made excuses to leave and not return. I and my husband had to take off work many many days because they scheduled the time available to come out convenient to them. When they did not show up, I would lose unpaid time from work and eventually my job. Therefore, because of their negligence, slothfulness and careless actions I lost my job and my home and I talked to several upper management individuals with AHS and none did anything about it. They were as rude as their workers.

I will never endorse a friend to use AHS or anyone. AHS is still my nightmare, I saved lots of money to accrue the home and used pension funds and lost it all because AHS repeatedly failed to show up for scheduled repairs. They would call me at work and say they were on the way to my home and if I'm not there it would be several weeks for them to return or that I must be at my house in a few minutes or I would have to make a new service ticket. And, still they would not show up after I rushed from my job. The first day a tech came out, he was very overweight and rude, he broke the stairs to my attic by stomping heavily on them, you could hear him from the very rear bedroom. I had many unsatisfied issues with AHS, and never got any compensation for losing my job, my house, credit score and the depression I've been in since all this. I paid for the coverage and never got the value or the service.

We've had American Home Shield for about 6 or 7 years. We had coverage for the appliances before but we took it off because we replaced all of them. We still have the HVAC and the plumbing and such on there. This last call we had we woke up one morning and we didn't have any heat. We have my wife’s 94 year old grandmother living with us, and she just got out of the hospital. They subcontract. So when Greenway called, I asked if they could possibly put us at the top of the list. And about a couple of hours later, they come out and fixed it.

I really don’t agree with some of their policies. We had a microwave replaced. It cost me $168 to get that microwave installed. Now, it costs more with installation and all that, but it seemed like I could get that microwave for say $175. They said well they had to pay like three hundred for it. I didn't understand that. That’s just the way insurance is. And we had the A coil a few years ago replaced on our air conditioner. We had to pay $800 on that. I was under the impression that if it didn't work, then it wouldn't cost me anything.

One experience we had with them was on the washing machine, and they had to put a new transmission in. We just had a new tile floor put down in the kitchen/dining room. The guy that come out to put the transmission in took a bolt out or screw, oil run out all over the floor. And they’re not gonna do anything about it. I said, "You need to get somebody out here to clean the oil up." We had to do it. We had to get the oil up. I did complain. They charge you a service fee to come out. I told them I’m certainly not gonna pay no service fee since I had to do all the work. It’s like they dropped the ball on that big time. I just take the good with the bad about them. I’m not completely satisfied with the way they do things. I guess that’s just the way it is.

When I purchased my house I got it with American Home Shield and that was in 2001 and I've had them ever since. It gives you peace of mind that if something big breaks, it gets replaced. They'll fix things and make them work again and if they cannot make them work again, they'll get another one and put it in there. Big things like the air conditioner, the washer and dryer, water heater... anything big that breaks including the garbage disposal. I had the garbage disposal replaced and outside air conditioning unit - outside unit replaced. So I'm happy. I don't mind paying the yearly amount.

I went and got AHS warranty for my dad and they didn't hesitate to give him one. Because he's an elderly person and he's retired, he can't afford to shell out $6,000 when something breaks and this insurance at least gets things fixed for him. It's better to pay the amount that you pay when the vendors come out than to pay the actual amount that they would charge you if you just called them directly.

We own a home here in Vero Beach which was fairly new and as the warranties were wearing out after the first five years. We looked into getting one here. The company we had before, that we had over there, didn't cover this territory. So somehow we got American Home Shield.

We've had American Home Shield for about 3 years and the experience has been very good and I've been pretty happy with the service. But they also are the only ones that I know of that cover pools, and we have a swimming pool. I've had really good luck with them. Sometimes the people that come don't come as quickly as I might like or I can't be there to talk to them. So I have a neighbor or somebody else pay them. But my visit went from $50 or $60 up to $75, when somebody comes now. And my contract went from $400 up to $765 a year now.

I was very disappointed. This last time, the guy came to fix the shower. It was dripping. And so, after being there for about 20 minutes, he came out and he said that it was okay. And then he left. He says “I don't need to change the shower head or do anything.” So, I just threw $75 down the drain, because it still works.

And the one before that, I had the toilet downstairs was backing up really bad. The living room and foyer were flooded. I called them and two days later, they got me someone. He said that the problem was outside and that I would have to pay him $350 for him to put a camera down there so he could look to see whether everything was broken. I called a friend, and the friend came and looked with his own equipment. He looked and there was nothing wrong with it. There was some type of obstruction, but it was minimal. I called the city and they came and took care of it. That was another $75, plus the time wasted and the damage. So, I was disappointed those two times.

When I first purchased my home, they already had a home warranty because of the age of the home, and I continued it. I switched to American Home Shield because the home warranty protection that they had on the home required initial payment of 50% down and 50% within a given period of time. American Home Shield warranty allowed me to pay per month, and that was better for me.

I've had 90% good experience with AHS. I've called, I've got good service. I did have one emergency and with that I was allowed to call with my furnace. It was over New Year's Eve, New Year's holiday. And they couldn't get anyone to come out to give me service, so I called back within the period of time. I was allowed to call the technician that takes care of my furnace on an annual basis, and that worked out fine.

The bad experience that I had was with the washing machine. The guy that came out to do the repair took three weeks to get the part, fairly new washing machine, it's a Kenmore. And he was an older gentleman, and I don't think he knew what he was doing. And as a result of that, I don't think he regulated the machine back to the way it was when I initial purchased it. Because my water now still flows to the very top of the machine, and basically it was set to regulate according to the amount of clothes that you put in there. So, that experience is still going on. But basically, overall I've had good experience. I've had 2 or 3 that I wasn't too happy with.

I would recommend, and I have recommended American Home Shield.

I am at my wits end dealing with the customer service department at AHS. I have been experiencing water issues at my home and it remains unresolved. AHS has sent two different plumbers to the house, both of which have stated that the water heater needs to be replaced. Here is where the problem begins.

We would like to utilize the first plumber to handle the replacement. The second plumber that was sent for the second opinion was not professional and openly talked about "jerry rigging" the installation of the new water heater. When AHS called me to go over the new water heater, I expressed my concerns, which were not heard and glossed over. I was telling their employees about a questionable contractor, but no one listened to that and only wanted to get off the phone. I asked for the first plumber to be authorized since they had the same recommendation. Their customer service reps only response is "We cannot do that per our policy." Despite repeated requests no one has been able to point me to the language in my policy that states one contractor cannot be authorized by AHS. It seems like a simple enough request since both contractors are with AHS and both had the same recommendation. By the way, the initial plumber's recommendation was to replace the water heater but AHS would not authorize until a third service call was made.

Additionally, someone was supposed to call me about a Cash Out option, which I do not prefer, but I will not allow the second plumber back in MY HOME. To date no one has called me on that. When I called for a status today, after receiving my fourth call this week from their IVR confirming everything is complete, which obviously it is not, the customer service rep could not estimate when I would hear from someone. I asked her to put me on hold and call that department. She stated she does not have that number and could not put my hold. Neither of which I believed and I expressed the same to her. Exasperated, I asked for her manager and she stated it is against their policy to transfer customers to the manager. I explained that I don't care about their policy, that I am taking showers at a gym due to water pressure and this has gone on long enough. She steadfastly refused to transfer and after 6 minutes I told her she would have to hang up on me unless she transferred me. She then placed me on hold and came back and transferred me, and wouldn't you know it...straight to voicemail.

My requests do not seem out of line. I have spoken to the first plumber personally since their customer service reps told me they do not do three way calls and they will take the job. I find it hard to believe that the phones do not have three-way call technology, but rather another "policy" designed to frustrate and not help the customer.

At the end of the day, their company sells a product that people hope they will never have to use. When we do use it, a little common sense and courtesy would be appreciated.

They sent a second refrigerator and it was damaged as well. So, the people that inspected it took it back to the warehouse. The third incident, they sent out two refrigerators. When the people outside inspected one of the refrigerators, they deemed it to be bad. But they deemed this other to be good, so they installed it and I accepted it. But when the one was sent back, they told me that GE said there's a restocking fee. And I said I don't understand why I have to pay a restocking fee for something that someone else called bad because GE said it was good. And I said that I don't think it's fair that I should pay a restocking fee. So then what they decided to do was they said they would pay half and I would pay half. And I still didn't find it fair that I had to pay any portion of it.

I had American Home Shield when I bought the house about 19 years. It came with the remaining of the warranty that was already in place. What I did, was when that expired, I did try something else, and I came right back. Compared to the other company I did try momentarily, better customer service, better pricing for better coverage. So just all around just a lot better. And when I have had to call in a work order, they are pretty prompt.

In January, AHS sends the same company to come back and repair again. Ten days later, we have flooding under the sink that has now spread under the wooden stairwell and a carpeted room. We asked AHS to send out a new plumbing company. This company says the problem was a leak from the damn garbage disposal and that it actually requires replacing.

AHS says all the water damage is secondary and they are not liable, yet it would not have happened if the problem was fixed properly the first two visits. I now have called a water restoration company that has to dehumidify our floors for three days.

I've had AHS a couple of times. I had it out in my house in North Carolina. And then when I bought the house here, it was just something that just got wrapped up into the deal somehow. I've been happy with AHS. In North Carolina happy with them. Here in South Carolina, I've had some problems and I cancelled it for a little while, but then I ended up going back to them because the company I went with after them was even worse.

Recently customer service has gotten a little better. But the people they're hiring to do the work, they suck. Those people are a bunch of lazy I-don't-wanna-do-anything kind of people usually. I've had to keep coming back to fix the same thing, and eventually they get around to fixing it. Or like the last guy who came out, he was supposed to fix the electricity at my house. Well, apparently American Home Shield had something wrapped up that they don't fix electrical things on the outside of the house, like a light post or a back porch light that I have. Instead of wiring it through the brick in the house, they wired it down the outside of the house, on the outside through a pipe, and so it's not covered.

My water softener popped a hose underneath the house and it turns out that that's not something they cover, because it's not actually inside the house, attached to it or something. All the warranty companies are like this though. They put in a bunch of exceptions to the things they cover. Almost everything that could go wrong with it, there's some exception to it. And the last guy that came out, he found the fuse box is shorting out because there's some shorts and wires, but they didn't cover it because it was on the outside of the house. It's like "Okay. How much are you charging me to fix it?" and he gave me a quote, how much it cost to fix it, and I've never heard from him since.

American Home Shield is pretty responsive. They do have some restrictive requirements that have affected me. As far as coverage, they got some very narrow-thinking coverage. For instance, on the HVAC, if I pay my premium and I got a problem - let's say the thermostat goes not straight to the system but on the circuitry board, then that's just how they put it together. They restricted me because of that so I was out of a lot of money just to repair that because it wasn't under my coverage. So that left a bad taste in my mouth. In fact, that's why I haven't renewed yet. I'm shopping around.

I had a different warranty provider, and as everybody is getting into certain tight quarters and times and money spending, they didn't accept monthly payments. So I went online to search out someone who did, and I found American Home Shield. I've been with them a little over a year. My experience talking to the representative was awesome. It was very good. But the service part was way too long...

They sent somebody out here and he evidently didn't even turn in his report or something. I'm not sure where the disconnect was, but I didn't hear anything. So I finally called in and they more or less indicated something happened with his service, and so they sent another person out.

The first guy that came out, went down and shut off the electricity to the oven. So when the second guy came out, I said that the electricity was off to it, because the guy had turned it off before. But when he pulled the thing out, opened it up to pull it out and look at it, it started shooting big fireballs everywhere. It scared me to death. I ran down and shut off all the electricity. And he cut the wires on it, and went down and shut down the proper electricity...

What they wanted to do for me was they wanted to replace the wiring on the unit. Well, I wasn't very happy with that because I was here and saw all this fire shooting out. I was afraid that there was something more wrong with it than that... but that's what they offered to do. But then they called me to tell me that if I wanted to buy a new stove that they'd give me whatever price that they had to fix it -- I'd have to pay the offset of what they were willing to give and of course that's a lot of money because you can't buy stoves for a couple hundred bucks. So I went ahead and contacted the second service guy. I liked this guy because he did seem to be proficient and know what he was doing. I called him and said I wanted to set up a time when he could come and do the re-wiring, and he said "No, that's not what I put in my report. That cannot be re-wired that way." So we had to go through that again and I was without a stove and an oven for 2 months, I learned to become a very creative cook.

At the end they did do what they said they would do, but it should have been handled more proficiently.

So that’s when I got some literature from American Home Shield and I decided to switch to them. Once I can get through to a human, American Home Shield is all right. But trying to use their computer system and every time you put in what problem you have with your house, it comes back with a totally different thing than it is. So I just keep waiting and waiting and pushing buttons until I can get to a human and talk.

Once I get through to someone, they've taken care of the problems. I had a leak on the back closet and the contractors I've dealt with when they heard my sister is paralyzed and bed-bound they were out within four hours. So that was very good. Customer ServiceTechRefunds & Payouts

    Reviewed Jan. 27, 2014

It’s unfair that American Home Shield make customers continue to pay for the same thing on an appliance over and over again. I had an experience with my dryer where the exact same thing went out three times in nine months. That was $25 a month. I could have bought a new dryer for that. They should've replaced my dryer, or at least sent out a company that knew what they were doing to begin with. By the time the third vendor came out, I stood there and watched him and he’s like, “Oh, this was the problem all along. You had a short. And these two were not making a connection, and so what happened was they were coming apart and that’s why it wasn’t working.” Yet the other two people didn’t know that so it kept coming apart, which is why it wasn’t working. When I tried to tell them that to get a refund on the other because you pay $75 for a trade call, they said, “Well, too bad.” And I said, “Well, that’s not good customer service if this third guy says this is what was causing it. It wasn’t the other things.”

And also if you have a big repair, they’ll cancel you. I had that experience before where they cancelled me and it took five years before I could get service again. Also sometimes there’s really long wait like when I called about my washer broke with water inside of it. The first company they were going to send me was going to be a week. And then I called them back and for once the girl was really nice and said, “Well then, I’ll call a different company. I’ll call Sears and get them out tomorrow.” That was the first time that had ever happened EVER, and I have been an American Home Shield customer for 20 years. So this girl that I talked to was really nice and I told her I really, really appreciate it because I can’t go that long...

They’re a big company and they don’t listen to the little guy. They make millions of dollars off their customers and should take care of their customers.

We have a new neighbor who we've become friends with, and they had just mentioned to us they were having some home repair issue going on. They told us that they had American Home Shield and how satisfied they were with the services that they'd received. I spoke with a good friend of ours who is a realtor, a Coldwell Banker agent and asked if she had ever heard of the home warranty through American Home Shield, and she said "Absolutely, I have. I highly recommend it to my buyers and my sellers." We're not in the market for a new home or anything, but I said "Is it something that a homeowner can just purchase?" And she said "Absolutely." So, I got on the Internet, on their website, and read some of the reviews, and the basics of their policy, and it was something that we thought we would be interested in. We're really glad that we took advantage of it at this time.

As far as the customer service, when we have ever called for a warranty issue, they've been very helpful and knowledgeable. We gave one negative review on one of the contractors that we had. But every other person, and we've had about 4 warranty issues, has been outstanding. The only concern or comment that I've ever made to them was there are some limited availability for certain kinds of contractors. We had an issue where we had a plumber in the house, because we had a leaking Moen faucet. The plumber came in and addressed the issue, and then wound up making us feel like we were just sitting for a sales pitch. We called and followed up with American Home Shield. Unfortunately for the next warranty issue we had, it was also plumbing and that was the only contractor that they had available. So we again expressed our concerns about the first representative, and they said we will absolutely be sending out a senior service representative, and we are sure that you'll have a better experience. And we certainly did. So they addressed our concern, and we're just very satisfied with the people at American Home Shield, as well as the contractors.

We got American Home Shield when we first bought the house 15 years ago. And then we dropped it and realized that we were stupid. We need to keep it. So we went back. We have the plan that covered our appliances, systems and the swimming pool. It’s just we have too much going on here to not have that sense of security. And even if we go years not using it and just use it one time, it pays for itself. We found that out because they have taken good care of us. My experiences with American Homes Shield have been very good in every possible way, just top of the line.

Every time we've used them, it was quick. Our refrigerator went out on us and they had somebody out here actually that same day because I called in the morning and they were out here that same day. They contacted American Home Shield and said that it can’t be fixed and they were on the phone with me just so quick, giving me the option of which refrigerator I want to get and I had a new refrigerator in the house within 48 hours.

It’s the same thing for our swimming pool. Every time, they were so nice! I've referred a friend and hopefully my mom’s going to listen. I told her it was an older house and she really needs that protection. Don't do without that extra security, because when you need it, they're there to back you up the second you need them.

And the problem is they can take up to 24-36 hours. So by the time you call it in, it really could be a 2-day process instead of a 1-day process. And on the weekend, it turns into a 3-day process because nobody comes out on the weekend. On the minor things, it's great. On the major things, like a heating system in your house that you need, it's a negative. I'm sure the reason they do that is to cut cost, but if people have a problem and the heating system on their main floor is out, it should be addressed within 24 hours. They're very good for the average, common things that go wrong in a house.

American Home Shield themselves are quick to respond and everything's been taken care of satisfactorily, with the exception of one. We had one problem with our washer and the person couldn't fix it. I don't really think he tried, and he cleaned up the floor with my towels! Then he would just not call. So I went months without a washer because he would not follow-up... he'd say he ordered a part. Finally, we got a different repair person out who fixed it the first time!

All the other experiences with having things fixed has been great. I've had AHS for a few years now. I mostly file my claim online and find that pretty convenient.

I've not had any bad experience with American Home Shield. It's reassuring to know we've got the coverage. The one thing that I'm not happy with is the same HVAC company that comes out to do the checking of the furnace. Once, it was because air-conditioning wasn't working, and they told me that I didn't have enough Freon. And then my heat wasn't working, and they told me I had too much Freon. That's something I have to pay for, this Freon. So, I wasn't happy with that, because it's the same company that put a lot in and the same company told me I had too much and they had to take some out, so my heat could work. It doesn't make sense. Other than that, it's been a good experience with everybody I've dealt with.

I like the people that AHS sent to me because I'm not electronically knowledgeable. They didn't talk over my head. They simplified it so I understood what they did and what we need to do. We had AHS during the first year to work on the washer, the dishwasher, and the service was good and it only cost us a few bucks... We did drop them for about a year or two and then thought about it, looked at the price and what they covered, and realized we probably need some protection so we went back to them.

It’s been almost a year now the second time and it's been good. They had to come out and replace a pool pump. After we explained to them the fine print that they had sent to us, they agreed that it should be replaced and they got somebody out here who did it right away and did a good job. AHS was part of the package when we bought our first house. It made sense with an old home with a lot of older appliances. They're going to break down so it was a good idea at that time and still is. We've had it for a year. I broke away from them for a while and I came back. They are pretty good but you got to watch them. Most of them have switched around or are trying to do as little as possible to maintain what they say they will do. Their warranty or guarantee is to fix it and if they can't then they'll replace it. So they're going to do everything they possibly can to fix it and not replace it because it's much more expensive.

I had one instance where it was in the self-cleaning oven and the clock wasn't working. Instead of replacing the oven which would have been probably 2,000, they actually had the part taken out by the service contractor, sent to some factory that they had - meaning American Home Shield. They actually fixed it even though there were no parts available from the manufacturer. It took a couple of weeks but it was set up so I could still use the oven. I couldn't use the self-cleaning part. That was 5 or 6 years ago and it still works. But they did what they said they would do. I had a garbage disposal replaced and had a pump at the pool.

I would recommend them to anybody. They're good. For $600 a year, if your air conditioner goes down... that's 8 grand or 10 grand right there.

The last time I did it, AHS called and said that they hadn't received payment, and I had been putting the payment in with the payment to my home mortgage and I didn't understand that, so I let it be and I started putting the same amount of money in advance in another account to take care of it. When they told me that I could pay it directly and not go through my Wells Fargo, I called them and I re-entered an agreement with them to do it and mail it directly to them because I didn't want it to be interrupted anymore, and that's the way I got back into it. I needed a new furnace last year and they gave me $1,500 towards it. But then they only gave me $1,375 towards the new furnace. After I went back and reread it, it says if you have steam heat that's what they'll allow you. The guys that they sent for the furnace were excellent and I used them a couple of years ago for electric and they were also very good. The plumber would repair things and I would have to call him back to come and fix it again within that 60 or 30-day period but apart from that I've been satisfied with the people.

We talked with a few different AHS customer service reps over the course of a few days. It resulted in some mixed messages. However, once my husband talked with a specific rep (I regret that I don't have her name), things were taken care of from there. She said that we should call her directly regarding our case. That was very helpful, because she was aware of our situation and we didn't have to explain ourselves repeatedly to different people. We ended up upgrading to a new high-efficiency furnace, and AHS paid a little more than 1/3 of the cost. We were also able to use the contractor of our choosing. We were satisfied with that resolution.

My husband and I purchased a home that came with an AHS warranty. We have maintained that coverage since then, for 13 years. We've only needed to request service on a few minor items - dishwasher (twice) and a hot water tank. We weren't completely satisfied with the level of service, but they were smaller ticket items, so we didn't didn't make a big deal out of it. Just paid all the extra, out-of-pocket fees and moved on. The only reason we held onto this coverage and paid a lot of money into it every year for 13 years was to protect us in the event a 'big-ticket' item went bad, such as our furnace or air conditioner. Well, earlier this week, our furnace stopped working. Never good timing, but especially bad considering the sub-zero temperatures we're experiencing in the Northeast.

I'll fast forward through the service request and contractor visit. Bottom line: we have a cracked heat exchanger. Here are the options we've been given by AHS: replace it with a comparable 80% efficiency furnace, OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES ARE $1,150 OR upgrade to a 95% efficiency - at a cost of $3,400 of which AHS will pitch in $645. So either way, we're paying over $1,000 or close to $3,000. I understand heating is an expensive part of home ownership - that's why we had the home warranty in the first place. Had we known how little coverage we would receive, I would have cancelled the coverage 13 years ago, saved up all the money we've given AHS during that time, and had plenty saved to pay for this new furnace outright. I'm very disappointed with these limited - and very expensive - options we've been given.

My father is the franchise president of Livingston Coldwell Banker office and he uses American Home Shield all the time so I got them. They're very good, very professional and very knowledgeable. We only had to call on them 1 time but we got feedback in 12 hours of putting in the initial request which was great and they were able to have our issue resolved within 24 hours. The timeliness was impressive. We didn't expect to hear back so quickly and have everything fixed so we're very happy with our first experience. It's as good as it gets.

My mother and brother had American Home Shield so I also purchased a plan from them. AHS has been great so far. AHS team helped me when I had a problem with my air conditioning unit, with my refrigerator dying, with my oven getting messed up. AHS has great overall value and I have recommended it to other friends who were having problems at home.
