Everything has been repaired as necessary by AHS. There are steps taken so as not to have to replace something, so we might be over-fixing things, but that's okay. As long as it works.

We have had a garbage disposal that is not working. We called and had repaired in December. It worked for a few days before acting up again. In January, AHS sends the same company to come back and repair again. Ten days later, we have flooding under the sink that has now spread under the wooden stairwell and a carpeted room. We asked AHS to send out a new plumbing company. This company says the problem was a leak from the damn garbage disposal and that it actually requires replacing.

AHS says all the water damage is secondary and they are not liable, yet it would not have happened if the problem was fixed properly the first two visits. I now have called a water restoration company that has to dehumidify our floors for three days.

American Home Shield has been wonderful. It has really helped me out along the way. They've been great. It’s been wonderful because I can really remote manage the property at times. If I’m out of town or away, I can always just call American Home Shield and schedule an appointment and have somebody come. I hope to be with them as long as I have the property and I’d recommend it to anybody looking for a home warranty.

AHS usually is really good. As soon as you put in the request, they get back with you very quickly and they usually get within one to two days of the time that you call them. They're usually out working on whatever it is.

My son has American Home Shield and he's happy with them, so I signed up too. As far as when I had to use them, they were great. They sent the company out as soon as possible and the workers were good at their job. The companies they deal with are good, so I'm very pleased with it. I will continue using them, and if I ever get another house, I will do the same thing.

I have had several appliances in need of repair. I am a single mom who is short on time and extra funds for such repairs. Each time I have had ended up having to make my own arrangements and pay for it because the vendors used by AHS are not local and in some instances were going to take up to THREE WEEKS to come and repair my appliances. Can you imagine a single mom going for weeks without a washer or dishwasher? Have decided that putting that $50 a month into savings will be a better bet.

We have one of the brochures that American Home Shield sent out or emailed. They were the ones that were available to me so we went with them. They've been an excellent company to work with. They were very cooperative whenever I called them and there was basically no static about trying to get out of making a payment. And the people that they did send were very cooperative and very informative. They are overall a lot better than ARS.

I've been with American Home Shield for four years. They’re prompt in responding to your service request. Most of the time, the contractors they send are okay. I've had a few bad experiences with them where a contractor came and said there was nothing wrong with your unit and left. And nonetheless, I had to pay the $75 visit. But for the most part, they’re better than the other one I had - American Home Warranty. There’s only two of them really. So they've got the corner on the market. You don’t have a lot of choice.

I've had AHS a couple of times. I had it out in my house in North Carolina. And then when I bought the house here, it was just something that just got wrapped up into the deal somehow. I've been happy with AHS. In North Carolina happy with them. Here in South Carolina, I've had some problems and I cancelled it for a little while, but then I ended up going back to them because the company I went with after them was even worse.

Recently customer service has gotten a little better. But the people they're hiring to do the work, they suck. Those people are a bunch of lazy I-don't-wanna-do-anything kind of people usually. I've had to keep coming back to fix the same thing, and eventually they get around to fixing it. Or like the last guy who came out, he was supposed to fix the electricity at my house. Well, apparently American Home Shield had something wrapped up that they don't fix electrical things on the outside of the house, like a light post or a back porch light that I have. Instead of wiring it through the brick in the house, they wired it down the outside of the house, on the outside through a pipe, and so it's not covered.

My water softener popped a hose underneath the house and it turns out that that's not something they cover, because it's not actually inside the house, attached to it or something. All the warranty companies are like this though. They put in a bunch of exceptions to the things they cover. Almost everything that could go wrong with it, there's some exception to it. And the last guy that came out, he found the fuse box is shorting out because there's some shorts and wires, but they didn't cover it because it was on the outside of the house. It's like "Okay. How much are you charging me to fix it?" and he gave me a quote, how much it cost to fix it, and I've never heard from him since.

    Coverage

    Reviewed Jan. 27, 2014

American Home Shield is pretty responsive. They do have some restrictive requirements that have affected me. As far as coverage, they got some very narrow-thinking coverage. For instance, on the HVAC, if I pay my premium and I got a problem - let's say the thermostat goes not straight to the system but on the circuitry board, then that's just how they put it together. They restricted me because of that so I was out of a lot of money just to repair that because it wasn't under my coverage. So that left a bad taste in my mouth. In fact, that's why I haven't renewed yet. I'm shopping around.

I had a different warranty provider, and as everybody is getting into certain tight quarters and times and money spending, they didn't accept monthly payments. So I went online to search out someone who did, and I found American Home Shield. I've been with them a little over a year. My experience talking to the representative was awesome. It was very good. But the service part was way too long...

They sent somebody out here and he evidently didn't even turn in his report or something. I'm not sure where the disconnect was, but I didn't hear anything. So I finally called in and they more or less indicated something happened with his service, and so they sent another person out.

The first guy that came out, went down and shut off the electricity to the oven. So when the second guy came out, I said that the electricity was off to it, because the guy had turned it off before. But when he pulled the thing out, opened it up to pull it out and look at it, it started shooting big fireballs everywhere. It scared me to death. I ran down and shut off all the electricity. And he cut the wires on it, and went down and shut down the proper electricity...

What they wanted to do for me was they wanted to replace the wiring on the unit. Well, I wasn't very happy with that because I was here and saw all this fire shooting out. I was afraid that there was something more wrong with it than that... but that's what they offered to do. But then they called me to tell me that if I wanted to buy a new stove that they'd give me whatever price that they had to fix it -- I'd have to pay the offset of what they were willing to give and of course that's a lot of money because you can't buy stoves for a couple hundred bucks. So I went ahead and contacted the second service guy. I liked this guy because he did seem to be proficient and know what he was doing. I called him and said I wanted to set up a time when he could come and do the re-wiring, and he said "No, that's not what I put in my report. That cannot be re-wired that way." So we had to go through that again and I was without a stove and an oven for 2 months, I learned to become a very creative cook.

At the end they did do what they said they would do, but it should have been handled more proficiently.

I was a realtor for 26 years and I used American Home Shield for a lot of my clients. And before them I was with Alliance Home Warranty and their rates just kept going up and up and up and up and up. So that’s when I got some literature from American Home Shield and I decided to switch to them. Once I can get through to a human, American Home Shield is all right. But trying to use their computer system and every time you put in what problem you have with your house, it comes back with a totally different thing than it is. So I just keep waiting and waiting and pushing buttons until I can get to a human and talk.

Once I get through to someone, they've taken care of the problems. I had a leak on the back closet and the contractors I've dealt with when they heard my sister is paralyzed and bed-bound they were out within four hours. So that was very good. Overall, AHS has been very good except for the computer system.

    Customer ServiceTechRefunds & Payouts

    Reviewed Jan. 27, 2014

It’s unfair that American Home Shield make customers continue to pay for the same thing on an appliance over and over again. I had an experience with my dryer where the exact same thing went out three times in nine months. That was $25 a month. I could have bought a new dryer for that. They should've replaced my dryer, or at least sent out a company that knew what they were doing to begin with. By the time the third vendor came out, I stood there and watched him and he’s like, “Oh, this was the problem all along. You had a short. And these two were not making a connection, and so what happened was they were coming apart and that’s why it wasn’t working.” Yet the other two people didn’t know that so it kept coming apart, which is why it wasn’t working. When I tried to tell them that to get a refund on the other because you pay $75 for a trade call, they said, “Well, too bad.” And I said, “Well, that’s not good customer service if this third guy says this is what was causing it. It wasn’t the other things.”

And also if you have a big repair, they’ll cancel you. I had that experience before where they cancelled me and it took five years before I could get service again. Also sometimes there’s really long wait like when I called about my washer broke with water inside of it. The first company they were going to send me was going to be a week. And then I called them back and for once the girl was really nice and said, “Well then, I’ll call a different company. I’ll call Sears and get them out tomorrow.” That was the first time that had ever happened EVER, and I have been an American Home Shield customer for 20 years. So this girl that I talked to was really nice and I told her I really, really appreciate it because I can’t go that long...

They’re a big company and they don’t listen to the little guy. They make millions of dollars off their customers and should take care of their customers.

We have a new neighbor who we've become friends with, and they had just mentioned to us they were having some home repair issue going on. They told us that they had American Home Shield and how satisfied they were with the services that they'd received. I spoke with a good friend of ours who is a realtor, a Coldwell Banker agent and asked if she had ever heard of the home warranty through American Home Shield, and she said "Absolutely, I have. I highly recommend it to my buyers and my sellers." We're not in the market for a new home or anything, but I said "Is it something that a homeowner can just purchase?" And she said "Absolutely." So, I got on the Internet, on their website, and read some of the reviews, and the basics of their policy, and it was something that we thought we would be interested in. We're really glad that we took advantage of it at this time.

As far as the customer service, when we have ever called for a warranty issue, they've been very helpful and knowledgeable. We gave one negative review on one of the contractors that we had. But every other person, and we've had about 4 warranty issues, has been outstanding. The only concern or comment that I've ever made to them was there are some limited availability for certain kinds of contractors. We had an issue where we had a plumber in the house, because we had a leaking Moen faucet. The plumber came in and addressed the issue, and then wound up making us feel like we were just sitting for a sales pitch. We called and followed up with American Home Shield. Unfortunately for the next warranty issue we had, it was also plumbing and that was the only contractor that they had available. So we again expressed our concerns about the first representative, and they said we will absolutely be sending out a senior service representative, and we are sure that you'll have a better experience. And we certainly did. So they addressed our concern, and we're just very satisfied with the people at American Home Shield, as well as the contractors.

The only problem I have is I live in Nevada and some of the vendors here are not very good. I've complained to American Home Shield and they've done real well trying to find me a different vendor. I had a hot water tank that went out a year ago and it took a week before the vendor put it in. That's a long time for a hot water tank. I know they go with the cheapest that they can find too and I can understand that, but it's the vendors that is my big issue. They're very easy to work with and when you call, the representatives are great to work with.

We got American Home Shield when we first bought the house 15 years ago. And then we dropped it and realized that we were stupid. We need to keep it. So we went back. We have the plan that covered our appliances, systems and the swimming pool. It’s just we have too much going on here to not have that sense of security. And even if we go years not using it and just use it one time, it pays for itself. We found that out because they have taken good care of us. My experiences with American Homes Shield have been very good in every possible way, just top of the line.

Every time we've used them, it was quick. Our refrigerator went out on us and they had somebody out here actually that same day because I called in the morning and they were out here that same day. They contacted American Home Shield and said that it can’t be fixed and they were on the phone with me just so quick, giving me the option of which refrigerator I want to get and I had a new refrigerator in the house within 48 hours.

It’s the same thing for our swimming pool. Every time, they were so nice! I've referred a friend and hopefully my mom’s going to listen. I told her it was an older house and she really needs that protection. Don't do without that extra security, because when you need it, they're there to back you up the second you need them.

We've been with American Home Shield for many years and have the full coverage. There's not a lot of flexibility. We had our heat system go down twice on the coldest days in Charlotte. And the problem is they can take up to 24-36 hours. The way they do that is, there's nobody on-call for emergencies during regular business hours, which could be doable if you didn't have to wait the extra day they give the contractor to get back to you. So by the time you call it in, it really could be a 2-day process instead of a 1-day process. And on the weekend, it turns into a 3-day process because nobody comes out on the weekend. On the minor things, it's great. On the major things, like a heating system in your house that you need, it's a negative. I'm sure the reason they do that is to cut cost, but if people have a problem and the heating system on their main floor is out, it should be addressed within 24 hours. They're very good for the average, common things that go wrong in a house.

I've had them now probably going on 15 years. My experience with them has been average. Every time I file a claim, I have to fight. They do not employ local plumbers or local electricians or local air conditioning people. I've had some pretty bad experiences with the people that they send out but there were instances that I get well qualified repairman who actually does things right. I've also talked to some of the repairmen that have worked for them that will not ever work for them again because they said it's low pay and they don't pay enough.

    Reviewed Jan. 26, 2014

I've not had any bad experience with American Home Shield. It's reassuring to know we've got the coverage. The one thing that I'm not happy with is the same HVAC company that comes out to do the checking of the furnace. Once, it was because air-conditioning wasn't working, and they told me that I didn't have enough Freon. And then my heat wasn't working, and they told me I had too much Freon. That's something I have to pay for, this Freon. So, I wasn't happy with that, because it's the same company that put a lot in and the same company told me I had too much and they had to take some out, so my heat could work. It doesn't make sense. Other than that, it's been a good experience with everybody I've dealt with.

It's been a long time that I've been dealing with AHS -- 10 to 15 years. I have updated it so many times since that time. My plan covers almost everything -- appliances and all that other good stuff that they had, because recently they had an offer and I upgraded to that. I like the people that AHS sent to me because I'm not electronically knowledgeable. They didn't talk over my head. They simplified it so I understood what they did and what we need to do. They would also check and say, "okay, if you do this, you'll be energy-saving more." They are awesome.

We had some problems with the air-conditioner, and they sent someone out. He corrected that and then we had some additional, we've had somebody maybe two or three times on the air-conditioner. But they were different problems with it, and that was corrected. We've had someone out for the washer, and that was corrected. We've had very good success with them, with the whole process. It was offered when we bought the house. The seller provided the first year. We had AHS during the first year to work on the washer, the dishwasher, and the service was good and it only cost us a few bucks... We did drop them for about a year or two and then thought about it, looked at the price and what they covered, and realized we probably need some protection so we went back to them.

It’s been almost a year now the second time and it's been good. They had to come out and replace a pool pump. After we explained to them the fine print that they had sent to us, they agreed that it should be replaced and they got somebody out here who did it right away and did a good job. They were very easy to work with and their system of contact and customer relations was good.

AHS was part of the package when we bought our first house. It made sense with an old home with a lot of older appliances. They're going to break down so it was a good idea at that time and still is. We've had it for a year. I broke away from them for a while and I came back. They are pretty good but you got to watch them. Most of them have switched around or are trying to do as little as possible to maintain what they say they will do. Their warranty or guarantee is to fix it and if they can't then they'll replace it. So they're going to do everything they possibly can to fix it and not replace it because it's much more expensive.

I had one instance where it was in the self-cleaning oven and the clock wasn't working. Instead of replacing the oven which would have been probably 2,000, they actually had the part taken out by the service contractor, sent to some factory that they had - meaning American Home Shield. They actually fixed it even though there were no parts available from the manufacturer. It took a couple of weeks but it was set up so I could still use the oven. I couldn't use the self-cleaning part. That was 5 or 6 years ago and it still works. But they did what they said they would do. I had a garbage disposal replaced and had a pump at the pool.

I would recommend them to anybody. They're good. For $600 a year, if your air conditioner goes down... that's 8 grand or 10 grand right there.

The last time I did it, AHS called and said that they hadn't received payment, and I had been putting the payment in with the payment to my home mortgage and I didn't understand that, so I let it be and I started putting the same amount of money in advance in another account to take care of it. When they told me that I could pay it directly and not go through my Wells Fargo, I called them and I re-entered an agreement with them to do it and mail it directly to them because I didn't want it to be interrupted anymore, and that's the way I got back into it. I needed a new furnace last year and they gave me $1,500 towards it. But then they only gave me $1,375 towards the new furnace. The guys that they sent for the furnace were excellent and I used them a couple of years ago for electric and they were also very good. We talked with a few different AHS customer service reps over the course of a few days. It resulted in some mixed messages. However, once my husband talked with a specific rep (I regret that I don't have her name), things were taken care of from there. She said that we should call her directly regarding our case. That was very helpful, because she was aware of our situation and we didn't have to explain ourselves repeatedly to different people. We ended up upgrading to a new high-efficiency furnace, and AHS paid a little more than 1/3 of the cost. We were also able to use the contractor of our choosing. We were satisfied with that resolution.

    Original Review: Jan. 23, 2014

My husband and I purchased a home that came with an AHS warranty. We have maintained that coverage since then, for 13 years. We've only needed to request service on a few minor items - dishwasher (twice) and a hot water tank. We weren't completely satisfied with the level of service, but they were smaller ticket items, so we didn't didn't make a big deal out of it. Just paid all the extra, out-of-pocket fees and moved on. The only reason we held onto this coverage and paid a lot of money into it every year for 13 years was to protect us in the event a 'big-ticket' item went bad, such as our furnace or air conditioner. Well, earlier this week, our furnace stopped working. Never good timing, but especially bad considering the sub-zero temperatures we're experiencing in the Northeast.

I'll fast forward through the service request and contractor visit. Bottom line: we have a cracked heat exchanger. Here are the options we've been given by AHS: replace it with a comparable 80% efficiency furnace, OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES ARE $1,150 OR upgrade to a 95% efficiency - at a cost of $3,400 of which AHS will pitch in $645. So either way, we're paying over $1,000 or close to $3,000. I understand heating is an expensive part of home ownership - that's why we had the home warranty in the first place. Had we known how little coverage we would receive, I would have cancelled the coverage 13 years ago, saved up all the money we've given AHS during that time, and had plenty saved to pay for this new furnace outright. I'm very disappointed with these limited - and very expensive - options we've been given.

AHS has great overall value and I have recommended it to other friends who were having problems at home.

They kept me informed on how long it would take for that service provider to contact me and when I should expect it. They may have even followed up to make sure the service provider showed up but I couldn't be more pleased with the way American Home Shield found these providers and also, I was very impressed with the providers themselves, with the services that they performed. The folks at American Home Shield headquarters are courteous, but I can't say that much for the people they send out. Ours is a house plan for a single family dwelling. Recently, we've had two different plumbers out to unplug our line from our kitchen. The first time, it didn't work. They didn't do anything and never would come back. The second plumber came out and said it was fixed. That was about a week ago and now it doesn't work again. And so, we're back having to call again about the same thing and we're getting a bit tired. They take our requests in a timely manner and we don't often hear back within the time frame we're supposed to hear back from the vendors. What we find is when the vendors come out, they want to sell us something besides doing the work, and we don't like to be hustled every time a repair person shows up. We want our problem fixed and not telling us that the whole plumbing system has to be replaced.

American Home Shield was a part of a home warranty when I bought a condo. The plan covers all the appliances and electrics. I'm not sure what all else, but heating and air. I did have one negative experience. I had called in and changed my credit card number. For some reason, something happened. It didn't get changed or the wrong number got put in and I ended up getting a letter from collections saying that I owed $400. That really made me mad because nobody picked up the phone and called me and said they were having a problem with my credit card.

What happened was my card was possibly compromised. And my bank sent me a new card and I had to call in the new number. My first notification from American Home Shield was a collections letter, and I had to go through the collections company. Then, I had to go through American Home Shield to send a letter to the collections company that everything was okay. I would hope or think that somebody running a business like that would take the time to call somebody and let them know something is wrong. Because I was ready to cancel my coverage and go somewhere else, a lady called me and took care of me. She was super nice and super helpful, so I ended up staying. Most of my experiences are good. I've had to use the call out service twice in the three or four years I've had it and the response has always been good. I just had that one bad experience with the billings. Overall, it's been a positive experience.

Overall I'd recommend American Home Shield for what they provide and for the service. Their customer service sometimes leaves me skeptical. It's interesting. Right now I've got a little problem with them because I signed up early. I agreed to renew early and was supposed to get a $75 gift card to use in my next event, and they still haven't sent it to me. They keep claiming they had sent it to me and I've not got it yet and it's driving me crazy because they said it comes like a credit card envelope but it still hasn't shown up. So I'm waiting for that.

It may be expensive upfront. I have an older heating system so if something goes wrong, it's better that I had that than having to deal with the full price on something. I've been with them 10 years. Outside of some on and off customer service issues, I don't have any problem with them because they do find the good people and in the long run, the payoff is worth it.

About 2001, between that time, one of my old bosses had AHS and told me about it. My plan covers everything. They sent me a letter saying to pay a one-time fee of $100 for your air conditioning unit. I paid that fee. And then when my air-conditioner broke down, they came up with all kinds of excuses as to why they weren't responsible or why they weren't going to pay it, but yet they took my $100. And they didn't give me my $100 back either even though they didn't help me. Then in 2012, I called them and I cancelled. I told them that I no longer wanted it because I purchased a new air conditioning unit myself. I exhausted my savings and I purchased a new air conditioning unit all on my own.

2012 around September/October, something happened to it. Well, they sent somebody out there and that person came out there and said, "Oh well, it's because of neglect or whatever. Or because you didn't clean the filter" or whatever it wasn't. So I wound up having to pay for that repair out of my own pocket - five hundred and some dollars. So I called them and told them that I wanted them to cancel my policy. I told them that I no longer wanted it. The lady said okay, that they were gonna cancel it. So I'm thinking that it's cancelled.

For a whole year they took the money out of my account. And then I was going through my bank statement one day and I noticed that it was still coming out of my bank statement. This was June or July of 2013, so I called them and said "Hey look, I cancelled this last November. Why is this money still coming out of my account?" "Well now, you can't cancel like that. You have to stay on the plan all the way until January 2014, and then you can cancel after the end of this year." I was like, "But I cancelled it last year." So it's supposed to be cancelled now, but it's still not.

I would never recommend American Home Shield. My mom even had it, and she cancelled hers too last year. She had plumbing issues and they did the same thing to her. She wounded up paying $1800 out of her pocket. They only winded up giving her like three or four hundred dollars for her whole expense. And she's been paying it for years and years. Just like I had.

I've been with American Home Shield for 1 year. So far it's been great. The process is simple. I first heard about AHS nine years ago when I bought my place. The seller secured a one year policy from me and it's a kind of a mixed deal to go through a little easier when somebody purchased it. Then I let it lapse. I have two policies because I have a rental as well as my unit and the people in the rental were destroying everything. Every other month I feel like I had to get a new washer or dryer or microwave and at some point I thought I'm going to get American Home Shield. I'm 69 years old and it sets me a little bit more than they did 20 years ago. I wanted that policy to be able to sleep better at night. When the calls came in, I know it wasn't going to cost me thousands of dollars. It was just a service call from the American Home Shield which we hadn't used to the rental yet.

The first repair was the dishwasher, and it's an old dishwasher. He did a little repair and it seems to be okay now. On my unit it was the ice maker and the water wasn't working, and I have coverage for that. He came and he fixed it, and two weeks later it broke. I had a call and he came again, fixed it again and then it broke again and they kept coming back. I said to him the last time he came back, which was the third time, "I hope you're not going to fix the exact same way because that doesn't work." It was over a week ago and so far the water is still coming. I feel like I'm losing confidence. So we'll see what happens, but 3 times and did the same thing each time. The last time he did a little something different. He actually opened up and put a little heater on there.

I would still recommend American Home Shield because I've heard nightmare stories, I have gone online and I've seen reports (they were mostly on the west coast, people in California with air conditioning problems, they kept coming back and there are still no air conditioning). It's true I didn't have ice, no water but that isn't something vital. You can get water from your sink, so I wasn't upset. It was my air conditioning and it kept breaking down, and it's 90 degrees at night in Georgia so I would be upset. Mine was a simple problem or even a washing machine you could do without for a week. I haven't had anything major yet so it's hard for me to judge.

Well we are now into the year 2014 and my refrigerator is still not working, was told they are going to replace it with one similar to mine. The one they are replacing it with is not the same, less features, less shelves and a less price. My refrigerator is worth brand new $2900.00, they are replacing it with a $1100.00 model (not the same brand) so now my kitchen has different name brands in it - bad if I want to sell the place. I had no other option. I have no money to go out and buy mine. This company is a joke! They told me they would only go up to $1500.00 for the refrigerator and I would have pay upfront for the cost and get reimbursed. WHAT! We go back 20 years with American Home Shield. The first year we got them, we had a furnace collapse. The furnace was about 40 years old. They immediately replaced the furnace and didn't take any hesitation at all at it. We bought two water softeners in two different houses and putting water softener on a hot water heater will kill it. And they paid for both of them. They've been good to us. I used to like it better when I could call somebody and get a real person rather than having to call it up online or leave a message. But that's what American business has gone to, voice mails and things like this.

90% of the time it has been a very good experience with them. I live in a very remote area in Arizona and they've been able to find people to come and take care of the things that I need to have taken care of. Many times, that means getting somebody out of Tucson, which is 85 miles away. So it's been indispensable for me.

At the end of Nov '13 my tenant called them to inform that emergency heat was not coming on. Company #1 came out and reported "same problem as last year, wires are cut!" My tenant replied that last year you told us 'wires were missing' and we had another company come in replace wires and heat strips themselves. As my tenant had new-born baby and it was very cold, technician said that even though it wasn't covered by AHS he would splice wires. Heat and emergency heat worked - great! A couple of weeks later it got pretty warm and when tenant turned on A/C it was blowing hot air, so she called back into AHS under the 30 day 'warranty'. No one called or came out. On December 31st, 13 all heat stopped.

Company #1 sent owner out on Jan 2nd and he advised that the fan capacitor was 'missing' and that the wires to the blower motor were disconnected. He said he would call it in to AHS and he left. I got a call from AHS to say missing parts and wires disconnected were not covered. EXCUSE ME - but the unit was working up until Dec 31st, it could NEVER have worked with capacitor missing and blower wires disconnected and we sure did not send someone up into attic to rip it all out! (That's what AHS is hinting!! )

Called in company #2, who were on the AHS call list in summer only, but not winter, but I trust them - they are honest!! They confirmed what Company #1 had said and said that it was obvious that these parts had been removed by them. He also tested blower motor and said it tested bad. He also remarked that drip pan was rusted out, evaporator coil showed signs of leaking, wiring was badly spliced, and duct work needed replacing in parts. Sent in their invoice/comments to AHS and still denied. Escalated it to next level and that lady said if I had company #2 come in and replace the missing capacitor and hook the wires back up to blower motor and then give a report, she would get repairs/replacement authorized. Had company #2 do this, and when hooked back up blower motor ran for less than a minute. He wrote another report and sent to AHS stating that whole unit needed replacement.

On 1/16 I got an e-mail from AHS denying any further repairs or replacement. I called in and asked for it to be escalated to a Manager, promised a call back in 24 hours. To date, 1/22/14 no call back. Have filed a complaint with Better Business Bureau, and filing review here. If I don't get some satisfaction within next couple of days, I plan on cancelling all three policies I have with AHS and going with Old Republic. I have heard that they treat their customers a whole lot better!

I have had AHS for 10 years. The warranty came as part of the house when I bought it. Over the last 10 years I have used it on and off for minor things but never needed it for anything big as I was good about maintaining my house, as were my renters. There were even several years I never used it. I specifically upgraded to have pool pump covered in case I ever needed it. They were useful, up until now. When it came time to sell my house, the home inspector noted the pump was very old (which also was noted when I bought the house), housing was leaking, the PSI was too high and the whole thing was ready to split. He has someone come out to get an estimate who also stated it was not in good shape and was "ready to blow".

I called AHS to have someone come look at it. The vendor (Sun Bright Pools) was extremely rude from the start. The technician noted it was leaking, but that was it, stating because it was still moving water AHS would not replace it. I had my old pool guy (I live out of state) come take a look who also noted that it was ready to go very soon and the fibers on the fiberglass were showing through. That was now 4 people who had seen it. I called AHS who, after a lot of run around, stated they would not fix it because it was still working. It literally would take the pump splitting, spilling sand into the pool and stop working for them to come fix it. Or, I could have the vendor go back out and take a look noting it is about to go on the invoice.

I arranged for Sun Bright to come back out. Jason, the owner, was argumentative saying AHS should not have sent him a recall and he going to call them accusing me it was "cosmetic" because the buyers wanted a new pump. Note: He never saw it himself. I never heard from him or AHS. My agent tried to call the local rep and left several messages to see if there was middle ground we could agree on since I was a long time customer (spending well over $7000 over ten years). She never heard anything back either. Now I'm paying for a new pool pump and pool filter. Why, oh why, did I upgrade if it wasn't going to help? What a waste of money and time.

I understand that it is insurance and that it is place for repairs. It is poor business, however, to not communicate, be argumentative and not have some sense of customer service. There were other options. Reading off a script each time "I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with your pool filter. I'm sure it is frustrating" is condescending. I had plans to include a one year warranty in the contract for my buyers. I canceled that clause and my contract as a result of this experience. I had no intention of subjecting my buyers to this. I don't know them, but no one should have to deal with this business if this is how they operate. I will never use this company again.

American Home Shield is one of the best companies there is for this cup of service. The only thing is in a small community like Kingsville where I live, they do not have any company to do the service. I have to go get that from the outside and make sure that it is approved by them. Then I have to pay for the repair and send the paperwork to get reimbursed, like an authorization. I have two homes, one here in Kingsville, one in San Antonio. My daughter had trouble with the air condition and we had to wake up at a week in the very hot summer and the companies that they choose were not screened properly. We went to see the reviews of this company as they almost broke their whole unit. They put in a part that did not belong and it was rubbing against something causing an awful smell like burning.

All the comments about the company were very bad. It took me a hard time to get somebody for AHS to approve. I don't know why but they told me that they cannot renew the policy that I get because they cannot find anybody to be a part of it. Corpus Christi is an hour away from me and they have to bring people from Corpus. But other than that, they are very good.

We bought a home warranty with another company when we first bought the house that we are now in 10 years ago. Then, we heard from some neighbors about American Home Shield and they were pleased with the services they got so we also went with AHS. Generally, our experiences with them have been pretty good. Occasionally there will be a service contractor that is not really quite so good, but for the most part it has been a positive experience. They also provide good economic services.

11 am on sat 1/19 went downstairs and noticed a puddle of "waste-water" by the drain in the basement. Immediately called AHS and opened an emergency service request. They assured us that since waste was actively coming into our basement that someone would call us and be here w/in 24 hrs. They said this could be 3 am... we said okay, whatever we need to do. 8:30 am on Mon 1/20, Mrs. ** calls to check the status of order. They told her they were still trying to locate a company that would come out and fix it. Said the contracted company would be contacting us.

1 pm on Mon, Mrs. ** calls back to check the status of the order. She was then informed AHS could not find anyone and it would be okay for her to start calling around. She called the 1st hit she got on Google, and they said they could come out. Mrs. ** had the company call AHS to make sure they would authorize them. AHS told the company that the technician would have to call them. 2:30 pm on Mon 1/20 Technician arrives, calls AHS and a game of many questions ensues. AHS asked Mrs. ** several questions then deemed her unable to give appropriate responses and asked to speak w/ the tech. The tech then explained he needed to excavate the septic. AHS told Mrs. ** this was not covered. She asked why and they told her they did not know, and she needed to talk to a sales rep.

Mrs. ** calls back and talks to someone else to clarify whether or not our situation is covered or not. She asked if the septic tank is not covered, will our "current issue" be covered? She tells them there is a stoppage in the main line that leads to septic (NOT SEPTIC). The AHS rep felt this explanation was not professional enough, b/c she wanted to know exactly what was causing the stoppage. AHS demanded to speak w/ the tech who took the phone and explained he could not possibly identify the cause of the stoppage.

The tech explained it could be any number of things. The tech explained to AHS that a cable specialist would be the best solution to the current problem. They wanted to know the cost before approving. To this the tech was able to tell AHS that the price starts from $120, and could not be known until the service was provided. This on-going questioning about what was causing the stoppage resulted in Mrs. ** talking to multiple people and getting nowhere for aprox 25 min.

We are now around 3 pm and in need of a cable specialist. WHAT WAS A PUDDLE OF WASTE HAS NOW SPREAD TO COVER 30% OF OUR BASEMENT, RUINING THE CARPET AND A COUCH. Mrs. ** is told to call back tomorrow morning when the specialist is there so they can make sure the price is satisfactory. Mrs. ** is pregnant, and suffering through sickness. Luckily, she was off Mon 1/20 and does not leave for work until noon on 1/21. The rest of the week she, like most normal adults, has to work 8am - 5pm.

It should be noted, this plan was offered by Coldwell Bankers, the realty company that sold me the house, and the warranty plan. The sole reason we bought the plan, that we in all reality could not afford at the time, was the possibility of a septic issue. Mrs. ** was told that we did not take the $30 option to add septic to our plan when we bought it. This is ludicrous. This plan is sponsored by the Coldwell Banker Co and the agent never mentioned anything about the need, or even the option to "add-on" to the warranty. Also, since AHS failed to provide a contractor w/in the timeline they had promised, Mrs. ** had to find a local contractor who charged a higher service fee, resulting in us paying $100 rather than $75. As we speak, we still have a VERY LARGE AMOUNT OF WASTE WATER sitting on top of our carpet in the basement.

Lastly, if you flip the booklet of our handy plan book over, you will see 4 plan options. 1 has check marks in every box... It’s called the FlexPlan Combo... just so happens to be the one we selected. With us purchasing the plan w/ EVERY box checked, and never being told of an option to "add-on" there was NO reason to ask "Is there anything additional we can buy from you?" There is absolutely no way this is how the service of this warranty is designed to operate.

I've been with AHS for a year and four months. My first service call was about three months ago for a dishwasher. And the man who came was very nice. He was from GE. He thought that I had problems with my basket. So he ordered a replacement basket. That has not corrected the problem, my dishwasher sounds like it has bad bearings or something. So I put in another service call the first of December. They sent me a service number but I had no follow-up, no service call, no appointment, no anything.

There's another issue with them. I had asked them back for my contract was due for renewal to cover my water heater and so forth, and they informed me that it was not covered even though the paperwork that I had says that it is covered. When I called them to get it covered, they said, "No ma'am, you don't need to do that, it's already covered."

When I called for a service call because I had two calls in one - my hot water being one issue and the dishwasher issue being the second issue - they basically said I would have to pay $300 because it was not in good working order. So I refused to pay that and I found on Angie's list a plumber who came. Even on the phone with the information I gave him he was able to diagnose the problem. He replaced a single part. It cost me a hundred dollars... So I'm not impressed.

Our furnace stopped working properly the first week of December, 2013. Granted the type of furnace is not common (fuel oil, i.e. diesel) for our part of the country (Georgia), but American Home Shield's hands-off attitude and lack of communication have left me still without heat 6 weeks later.

Despite my being very sure all parties understood the type of furnace involved, the first contractor knew nothing at all about them. He found a reset button, collected his $75 service fee and furnace worked for a few hours. The second contractor seemed to know a good bit about the furnace, but chose the path of least resistance to fixing it: replacing one part at a time without any true diagnosis. Each part required ordering, waiting, my calling to see when he was coming back in order to spur him on to check and see if the part was in, etc. The first week it had to be the igniter. After installing the new igniter the furnace worked for a few hours and then stopped again. By the behavior I described to him via a lengthy phone call the next day, a new controller was ordered. His son came to install the controller. The furnace never worked as a result of that new part but another week was gone.

The next target was the fuel filter. At his suggestion I ordered that myself so that it would be delivered directly to the house. Another week gone. From looking at the old fuel filter, it is clear that it needed to be replaced. But that is not the source of the trouble. Suddenly the furnace is not getting any spark (again) and the fuel seems to have a lot of air in it. He cannot determine where the air is coming from. However he did twist the fuel line while installing the filter and there is now a leak in the fuel line at a compression fitting near the cut-off valve. He does come back the next day to correct the leak, which also corrects the air in the fuel line.

Finally the proper pressure gauge is brought out and it is determine that the pump is not maintaining sufficient pressure to vaporize the fuel properly. However at this point he basically quits, not wanting to work on the furnace any more. He tells AHS this but no one calls me. Only after I call AHS is any effort put into finding contractor #3. 4 weeks gone, 3 new parts that were unnecessary.

3rd contractor arrives on a Friday, confirms that the pump needs to be replaced, tells me that they will contact AHS and order the pump on Monday. On Monday instead of hearing from the contractor or hearing from AHS that anything is amiss, I get a service confirmation email that yet a different contractor will be calling to schedule an appointment. I think there must be some mistake as contractor #3 seemed to be on track to a solution. Turns out #3 also turned down the work but another day goes by before I get all the facts and get an appointment with #4. Of course the appointment is for 2 more days in the future.

Early December, 2013 to now January 20, 2014. In 2 more days the next chapter starts.

Our home is a 1922 farm house and we have a central air unit that is a Singer and it's from the 1970s and they've repaired it so many times. Our washer and dryer went out and it was a little difficult, they ended up replacing the washing machine and the dryer. It depends on who answers the phone. Our overall experience has been mediocre. They had a good reference online and I like what the girl told me when we talked on the phone. I talked to her several times before we actually committed. And we have been with them for probably about a year.

We've only called them two times - one for our central back and one for our furnace. The one in the central back was fine. The serviceman was very nice. It wasn't an earth-shattering thing so it wasn't like it was a big rush. My problem had been in the past that lack of contact was the biggest problem; you called them and they were supposed to get back not Home Shield, but the contractor and that was a nightmare with the other company. And then right before Thanksgiving our furnace stopped working and so I had to call them again. Initially it didn't go very well. It was pretty cold, we were having snow and I have no heat. I felt that was fairly urgent so whoever they hooked me up with didn't. All we got was an email. We didn't get a return phone call.

I called them a couple of times and then I waited till about 3 o'clock that day and called back and kind of complained. The lady was very, very nice and within 10 minutes I had a return phone call from somebody else and he was there by 5 o'clock. Although there were all kinds of additional issues, he came back and fixed everything. There was an additional problem and he had to get a new part, so my wife was pretty upset because we were supposed to have company and we were going to have to cancel everything. The guy took it upon himself and called me, came back, went to Home Depot or someplace instead of his regular source, bought the part, came on Thanksgiving Eve and was here till 7 o'clock to fix it - not a dime extra. He was awesome, and we were very happy. At this point, we are not going to change.

About seven years ago when I first bought the house, I got something in the mail about AHS. So we bought their plan that covers the electrical, appliance and pool because I have a pool. The experience has been really good except for the last one which wasn't American Home Shield's fault, but it was a terrible experience. What happened was the plumber they sent over said they don't do that, whatever the problem was. I said "It's ridiculous. You're here, why don't you do it?" The plumbing place hung up on me. It was really rude so I got another plumber. It took them four minutes to fix it and this went on for a week and a half arguing about something that took four minutes. The plumber could have done it. I would have given the extra money. But he called another contractor in that had nothing to do with it. He thought it was something else, wasting another person's time - all our time. I let AHS know about it because I didn't want to receive that plumber in my house again.

I still have an unresolved issue with them which I haven't brought up. The last experience with them was bad but I was promised a $75 credit card. They give you a $75 credit card when things are misunderstood. She said she would put it through but she never did, but I haven't called to bug them about it. The only problem we have is what's covered and what's not covered, and sometimes it's my fault. But I got everything fixed. I got a new garbage disposal. Everything's good. The workmen are nice; everybody's fine. The people on the phone are really nice. They put the request for you right away.

It was good service and generally I don't have a lot of patience with things so normally I'll throw the thing out and use something else but they were able to fix it. AHS was good for me so I was satisfied with it.

I have had great success in arranging and receiving service on issues with my home under my contract. However, I have had great difficulty in receiving replacement items that were deemed necessary as the original items could not be repaired. The first item was a washer. I selected the washer by e-mail, played phone tag for more than 30 days with a "New England" company and still have not found resolution or received my washer. I used the original email contact from AHS to inquire about the washer and never received response. It has been greater than a year. Next was my dishwasher. Same scenario. Was informed by technician it could not be repaired and AHS would arrange replacement. I am still without a dishwasher. It has been close to a year. I have used the local Laundromat to wash my clothes, quite costly and inconvenient. My dishes I am doing by hand. Not such a big deal. I would like the appliances delivered to my home and not have to play phone tag for weeks to have it happen.

I'm a realtor and used what I used with my other clients and that's American Home Shield for home warranty. I had them last year, so this would be my second year. I already renewed for this coming year. My experience with AHS has been very good. They were prompt, easy to deal with and it has been a good experience. I would recommend them.

I've been using American Home Shield for a long time. So far they have been performing okay. They provide pretty good service and I like using the website.

This is the second time I've had American Home Shield. I did switch because they were too expensive. They had raised their co-pay and I switched to another company and then my husband wanted to go back to them. The other company was good but there were things that weren't covered that were covered with Home Shield. This time we have AHS for a year or two. We were with them for about three years before. As a matter of fact, I've recommend friends to Home Shield and then when they raised their deductible so much, I went looking for somebody else and my friends still have them. AHS co-pay is a little high, but the service is excellent. They are great and professional. But they should lower their co-pay, that’s the only problem I have.

My son recommended American Home Shield and because I value his opinion, I went ahead with it. They have been great. AHS reps are very easy. When I do need someone to come out to repair whatever needs to be fixed, they're very professional and helpful and knowledgeable. I have only good things to say about it. They are also timely. The deductibles that I have to pay are very minimum compared to if I had to go out there and if I didn't have that insurance then I have to get it repaired. It would be very much more money. So I'm overall very pleased with everything about American Home Shield.
