When we were looking for a home in Dallas, our real estate broker had recommended that we get a home warranty so when something breaks down and we have repairs or whatever is needed, we can call one number. We went with American Home Shield. Their representatives are great. They’re very informative and we haven’t had any problem with the people at American Home Shield. They've been really good.

The contractors were okay. One, we got a cash back. We used a contractor that I knew for a big job, an air conditioning job. I do feel like a lot of the contractors that come through American Home Shield, and maybe it’s just what all contractors do, really do try to hard press and up-sell when they get to the house. They’re there to repair something. They’re always looking at the bigger project. The best contractors are not with American Home Shield. But overall, AHS is definitely worth having just for assurance of when something goes wrong there’s one place to call. It’s worth having for people who don’t have experience with repairs or in a certain area with contractors.

We submitted a service request for our oven with range top; the electronic would turn itself on and off when the range was being used. The contractor came and collected the $75 co-pay even though he did not perform any test. It's just that he could not replicate the problem at that time. The next day, it happened again and I had to request a service recall through AHS. The contractor showed up a few days later and without any testing decided that the control board was malfunctioning and he said that he will order through AHS.

A week went by and today AHS rep called me, giving me two options: (1) to have the board rebuilt but it will take 3 weeks to do that not including the shipping and certainly I will have to wait for the contractor to pick it up from our home again, ship it and with the return shipping, meaning it will take about 5 weeks total ;(2) to buy a replacement but they will only provide $250 for it (this is what they suggested). Right away, my wife told me it was unfair and asked to speak to a manager. AHS told her that they could not let her talk to a manager right away and they will have a manager contact us.

When I got home, I called them to verify the issue. I explained that it should not make sense that we go without oven and range for 8 weeks and we've gone without it for 2 weeks now. We use it to cook our meal every day and now they wanted us to buy a range with only $250 after we gave them $75 co-payment already. I asked the rep for his name and he gave me a name "John" but he refused to give a last name or let me talk to anybody else. He was very rude to my wife, insinuating her accent and when I talk to him he gave me a poor customer service. I told him I needed his name so I can provide a proof that I tried to resolve it with AHS when I submit a complaint to BBB but he claimed that it was the company policy not to give his last name or even to talk to anybody else. He then told me to call the part company so they may expedite the repair of the board that has not even left my oven. I stayed courteous the whole time but since I refuse their option and would like to contact BBB for resolution, he said to go ahead and sue AHS. We need this issue to be resolved fairly in a timely and reasonable manner.

I recently made a claim with American Home Shield for my air-conditioning, and it was handled fine. I had to call back and reschedule one because I read a warrant that has set of horrible reviews, but the contractor was willing to accommodate me. I was surprised that American Home Shield had somebody on their team that had so many horrible reviews because the people that came out had probably not one good review. There were 11 bad reviews. So I called an hour later after I found out who they picked and I said I don't really want them coming to my home. They gave me someone else and they were really good.

We hadn't used the air conditioning all year. The fuse went out upstairs so the motor was just dead; there was no power to it. After the repair, it works good. Reviewed April 14, 2014

I've been a customer of American Home Shield in Nevada for 20 years and always got good service. I moved to Illinois six years ago. My most recent claim with them was for plumbing. The representatives were fine, but I was very disappointed with the contractors. My washing machine is connected to the pipes under my sink. In the last few months, when the water is rinsing in the washer tub, it comes up into the sink and then goes down. The plumber rooted the pipes. I told him, “I don't think that’s going to help because I think the problem is with the pipe in the washer” because previous to this I had American Home Shield come and check my dryer. The fellow from Sears said to call American Home Shield and send a plumber out. He said, “There’s something stuck in your washing machine pipe that’s bypassing and going into your sink instead of going down into the drain.” He said that he doesn't fix that and that he was for dryers. So I did.

The plumber came and rooted it out and did a very fast job. He said to fill up the tub and see what happens. So I did and the water comes up. Then he did it one more time in a matter of a second. I then filled up the tub and it did it again. So then he said he had to talk to American Home Shield. He went out of my condo so I couldn't hear what he was saying. All of a sudden, my telephone rang and there was a young lady on the phone from American Home Shield that said I have to pay the plumber $200 directly. This was the second time he was out. The lady said, “You have to pay him $200 in order to pull the washer out from the wall so he could look to see what the problem is in the pipes behind the washer.” I said, “I paid my $75 for the call. Why should I have to pay him $200 just to pull the washer out?” She says, “Well, that’s what you have to do.” So I got very upset and I hung up.

The plumber came back in the condo. He said, “Did American Home Shield call you and tell you?” I said, “Yes, they did. You want $200 just to pull the washer from the wall so you could see what the problem is? Isn't that what I have insurance for? In order to get back there, you have to pull the washing machine away from the wall.” And he says, “They won't pay for it so you have to pay for it.” He even asked if I have a friend or anybody in the building that can pull out the washing machine away from the wall so that he could look at the pipes. It just doesn't make sense.

I got very upset and I told him to leave my house. I was going to write to the Tribune. There’s a column in there where you write you haven’t been taken care of properly. I've been in the hospital and I haven't had a chance to call. So it never got fixed. Besides this issue, I really like American Home Shield and I've gotten many of my friends to be customers.

I first heard about American Home Shield through my dad years ago because one of his neighbors had a policy with them. I was actually a customer for years and didn’t use it. Then when my policy lapsed for about a year - now I'm renting out the house - I figured I better sign back up. And then sure enough, I needed it. So that was the first claim on this policy.

The representatives were courteous and knowledgeable when I submitted a claim for plumbing. It was quick and easy in giving the information of who the local service person would be because it’s a local company depending on what you need done. Then they contacted me on the same day to set up an appointment. It’s the same for the contractor as well. I've been happy with everybody. I had a section of pipe that had corroded. It was just really a small drip and they replaced and fixed it. It’s the best insurance a homeowner can get. It covers all the stuff that homeowners insurance doesn't cover.

We've had American Home Shield service since '99 and have dealt with them several times. Their representatives are good, and most of the guys who showed up were really good and attentive. However sometimes they don't call ahead of time so I can tell them what the problem is. And then they get here and we have to wait for a while to get repair parts if I need repair parts (I had an air conditioner that was out for about a month in the middle of summer down here in North Carolina, so it’s not a pleasant experience.)

We've gone through so many different contractors and the biggest problem we've had is with heating and air conditioning people. Sometimes you can’t find one especially in the summertime if you lose your air conditioning. There’s a backlog down here for getting it done because they only got one contractor that works with them now.

They came out the next day, repaired what was broken and that was it. It was very easy. The service guy was nice and he knew what he was doing. He narrowed it down to what could be the problem, and once he figured out the problem, he fixed it. I like that you could just get online and request a repair and then once you do that, the company calls you. I've used American Home Shield once or twice and I've been very satisfied with it.

Submitting the claim was fine but this is the only time in six years that I've not been satisfied. I have an issue with the plumber and with how it was handled by American Home Shield. They cover the water heater but there was other work that had to be done. The plumber tells how much it's going to be and you really don't have any choice because you're having the water heater installed. It turned out that the prices being charged by the plumber were exorbitant and gouging us.

This one time, it did not turn out to be a good deal. We feel that American Home Shield has some responsibility there because we called them and this is the plumber they sent out. Another thing I'm upset about is that I made a protest about this and have not heard back from them. When this plumbing company did it, I called American Home Shield immediately and complained about it, and they said they were giving it to a supervisor and I would hear back from them. I've never heard a word back from them. I would still like to find out why I've not heard anything back from them.

I was informed they would be at my home in approximately 2 hours. They did come, however, they were unable to replace the heater that day as the sheet rock had to be replaced as it was soaked to the point of collapse.

The water heater was replaced on Tuesday, January 21st. I had to come up with over $300.00 as apparently the heater was out of code. Also, my premiums have been raised as of March 2014 and I am not sure if this is because I made a claim or just a general raise in premiums. I have had American Home Shield for the past 13 years and this is the first MAJOR claim I have made, so is the raise in premium because of the claim or a normal cost of doing business raise?

I've had nothing but problems with American Home Shield since I started with them almost 10 years ago. At first I thought they were great and it was going to be a fantastic policy for my home and a rental property I have. Well turns out, not so much. First of all, I had an air conditioning unit that stopped working. It was in the middle of summer and tenants had just moved into my rental property. I filed for a service order and was contacted by someone the next day. Great I thought. The person shows up with his 12 year old child to repair the unit. The child is handing him tools and it was very odd and seemed unorthodox that a work person would bring a child to repair something. He couldn't repair it. AHS wanted a second opinion. They couldn't find anyone in my area so they contacted me and told me I had to find someone. I did and that person repaired it. They paid that company.

The unit stopped working again 1 year later and I refused to have the first person sent out again with his child. They had nobody in my area so I was again told I had to find someone and they make you jump through hoops to get someone approved and it's a MAJOR hassle. It's just 100% stress dealing with them. Then 4 years later, never called them for any repairs, my refrigerator just stops working in the middle of the summer. My 85 year old father lives with me and my mentally ill brother lives with me. Both require medications that are refrigerated. I call for the repair and the next day I get a call from Sears saying they can't come out to look at my refrigerator for 2 weeks. I call AHS, tell them that's unacceptable. (This is not a dishwasher or something I don't need. It's a refrigerator!)

So back and forth again I go with AHS. They send someone 1 day later to repair the refrigerator. He walks in my house, looks at the fridge and says, “I don't fix this brand” and walks out my door. I call AHS and they then tell me they have nobody in my area to fix it, find someone yourself. It's Labor Day weekend and I can't find anyone. I ask them to replace it; they refuse. So I replaced it because I had nowhere to put my food or refrigerated medicine in 90 degree weather. I then hired an attorney who sent them a letter letting them know we would sue them and don't you know the next day they called me and offered to pay me for the replacement cost of the fridge. I then cancelled with them because I had had it. Their customer service people don't care, are rude, and the wait time to talk to anyone when you call is minimally 15-20 minutes and can be as long as 1/2 hour. It's frustrating to say the least, then someone finally answers the phone and they are rude and nasty.

So anyway, to end my story, I cancel my insurance with them and tell them they are NOT authorized to withdraw my monthly payment from my bank. So, this month, they withdraw the money from my account. Basically stealing my money. I contact them and ask for a supervisor and I'm told, "You are not entitled to speak to a supervisor". Really, are you kidding me. I cancelled my warranty insurance, told you that you are not authorized to withdraw money from my bank, you go ahead and withdraw the money against my wishes and I'm not entitled to speak to a supervisor. So I call my bank, lodge a fraudulent claim and then AHS calls me and says, “Oh someone made a mistake. You'll have a refund in 45 days!” To me, that's outrageous. I would NEVER EVER use AHS again. Had I just put $53.50 in a separate bank account for all the years I paid them and didn't need ANY repairs, I would have had $4,000+ in the account which would have covered the refrigerator and 10 other appliances if they broke.

Early on Saturday morning, we discovered our hot water heater was out. We call our warranty company only to find that we will not be able to get any service until Monday. On Monday I stay home so that I could be there when the repairman arrived. No one ever showed up. I call AHS to find that they had until Tuesday to even schedule an appointment. We attempt to find a plumber on our own. In doing so Benjamin Franklin Plumbing's customer service person was great. She recommended calling the manufacturer to find out the age of the water heater. We did and found it to be 19 yrs old and not repairable.

We call the plumber AHS had contracted give them the information, so that they could be proactive and come prepared to replace it and not just look at it. My husband stays home on Wednesday for our 4-hr window appointment. Upon arrival, he confirms it was not repairable (duh, it was only meant to last 15) and that we would have to wait until AHS sent a replacement water heater and pay to have it brought up to code in addition to the service charge co-pay. So now we would still not have hot water for almost 1 full week.

All we get from the customer service supervisor is, "There is nothing we can do about it". I called other plumbers after this to see if it was AHS that was shady or the plumber. Guess what, it was both. Poor customer service and they hire shady contractors to do the work. They are so busy trying to screw over their customers that they don't realize their contractors are screwing them over. Had Benjamin Franklin done the job, we could have gotten it all done the same day and total out of pocket would have been $150 less.

I recently submitted a claim for a heating problem with American Home Shield. The problem started fairly quickly because the motor was burning out on the furnace and we had really good service that time. But prior to that, I had a problem with the air conditioner and it was a big issue with the supplier and American Home Shield because I was getting conflicting messages on who should order a particular part and everything and we had no air conditioning during a hundred-degree weather for about a week.

But AHS did offer to buy us a window unit so we at least had something in our bedroom, but it took about three weeks to get the air conditioner fixed. One of the issues I had with American Home Shield is the first person they sent to work on my air conditioner was 30-somewhat miles away and the person who fixed my furnace was three miles away. And I really would prefer that they have a local person. If they got somebody three miles away from a customer, that's the person that they need to contact, not somebody 35 miles away.

We've been fairly pleased with the American Home Shield warranty that came with our home purchase. They're very efficient and very helpful. We do end up using the automated system at times, which seems to work well. One of the challenges with this whole thing is having them choose what people to work on things. We were working on the house from the beginning and it would have been more beneficial if we could've worked together with them and had particular people that were already connected to the house working on things that have knowledge and other things like that.

We had electric things that we ended up working on and we ended up replacing a panel in a middle of doing some general work and then we were not able to actually go back and claim that. So there's only certain benefits from the warranty. We'd like to carry the policy but we don't know that it really makes so much sense for us.

There is nothing wrong with American Shield and the way it's organized but some of the vendors they use are not very good. We've not had an excellent experience. We have had to have them make multiple business before they have been able to solve the problem. We had to have 3 and 4 calls for just a minor problem and it has taken them a while to figure out what the problem was. And our refrigerator, which we had fixed several years ago, never really was fixed and they did everything for it. American Home Shield is very responsive. They get back to you right away and that's good, except at our beach house that we had. We would have a problem and it needed to be resolved right away. They wouldn't come for days and when you have a rental unit, you cannot wait days. So we ended up having to pay $3,000 out of our pocket last year because somebody would not come over there right away. Something needs to be done about that problem.

With our own home, we just live with whatever. We actually hardly had any heat all winter because our furnace was not working, and they couldn't find out what was wrong. Finally, they did find out it was a little something which was really what was wrong with it to begin with after we had no heat. So we were not very happy. We're going to continue with American Home Shield but our experience has not been 100% positive.

But then when it kept doing it and it got a little more regular, I went ahead and called them. Our experience with their contractor was fine. He thought the problem might have been something else the first time he was here. But then within a half hour after he left, it did it again, so I called him back. He came back the same day.

I had AC ductwork that was leaking in my attic. I had been with AHS for 5 years plus. Technician came out and looked at my problem. AHS called and said since the ductwork was not installed correctly (15+ years ago, before I owned the property) repairs were NOT covered. Almost every time I have a service request with AHS it's not covered or my out of pocket is 500 to 1500 dollars. The only things that seem to be covered are toilet flush kits, clogged drains or shower valve parts. This is FRAUD pure and simple. If you have a newer home the items in it are most likely up to code and you don't have anything worry about, but with an older home that doesn't have a home warranty, the MOST POPULAR combo plan from AHS looks good and when you look at all the items it covers it looks very good.

In come the clauses like not up to code, not properly installed, this would be an upgrade not a REPAIR. Although they have a contract add-on that will cover these things, once you have reported the problem to them, you can't get that problem covered by them. NEVER do you hear from AHS saying "You should consider UPGRADING your contract due to past problems we've fixed for you before." NO they don't want that to happen at all, they want to get your 600+ dollars a year and then DENY your claims. The NOT properly installed clause - This means that when you buy their product, it's up to you to make sure you aren't wasting your money by having things in your home that are NOT UP TO CODE or NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY. Now if it was installed properly at the time it was put in, that is just TOO bad, it's still not installed properly and they DENY the claim.

So here's the SCAM. You buy (because we advertise it on our site as the most popular) an AHS home warranty. Something breaks in your home, they DENY it because they can say it wasn't installed properly or it's not up to code and because you turned in a work order to this for this problem it's FOREVER DENIED because they won't cover it even if you buy their upgraded ADD-ON! The problem here is they GET to DECIDE what is improperly installed and if that was the way they did it when they built your home, then it doesn't matter, because they get to make the decision as to the improper installation. NEW homes don't need a HOME WARRANTY, so the only business model that supports them is SCAMming your customers.

Below is text from their contract for DUCT WORK. "5. DUCTWORK - COVERED: Ducts from heating and/or cooling unit to point of attachment at registers or grills and flex ductwork. NOT COVERED: Registers or grills, insulation, Asbestos-insulated ductwork, dampers, improperly sized ductwork, Diagnostic testing of or locating leaks to ductwork, including without limitation, as required by any federal, state or local law, regulation, or ordinance, or when required due to the installation or replacement of system equipment. NOTE: Where covered repairs require access to ductwork, AHS will only provide access to and sealing of ductwork through unobstructed walls, ceilings or floors, and will return access openings to a rough finish.

Obstructions include, without limitation, built-in appliances, systems, cabinets, and floor coverings. If the ductwork is accessible only through a concrete floor, wall or ceiling, AHS will cover up to $500 for access to, sealing of other repair to, or replacement of such ductwork, including returning access openings to a rough finish. If any ductwork that is inaccessible due to concrete or other obstructions requires repair or replacement as a result of diagnostic testing, AHS will not cover such repair or replacement."

I see the word Improperly SIZED ductwork, but not installed properly doesn't come until you get down to section #9 where they put in their clause that most people won't read because they are interested in only what is covered and not covered when they are trying to buy a home warranty, so AHS doesn't list this famous clause where it should go in the NOT COVERED area of each of the PLAN coverages. It puts it where you can't find it easy. Another PRIME way of SCAMMER trying to dupe its customers into thinking they have read what is covered and NOT COVERED.

Here's section 9: "9. AHS is not responsible or liable for repairs related to inadequacy, lack of capacity, misuse, improper installation, previous repair or design, manufacturers defect, and any modification to the system or appliance. AHS does not perform routine maintenance. You are responsible for providing maintenance and cleaning on covered items as specified by the manufacturer to ensure continued coverage on such items. For example: heating and air conditioning systems require periodic cleaning and/or replacement of filters and cleaning of evaporator and condenser coils. Water heaters require periodic flushing."

Please WHATEVER you do DON'T get SCAMMED like I DID! REMEMBER NOTHING but very EASY fixes are COVERED anything that would send you to your savings account or a finance company is NOT COVERED.

    Reviewed April 8, 2014

We have been customers of American Home Shield since 2000. However, under the care of American Home Shield, we have just been through 66 days of no heat in our home during what turned out to be the longest winter of our lives. It has been the most unbelievably bad customer service experience that we could have ever imagined.

On the evening of January 8th, our heat went out and we called AHS the morning of the 9th. On January 11th, a technician from Oxford Heating and Air came out and said that we needed a new motor and that it would take a week or two to come in. Two weeks later on January 22nd the technician came back and installed the motor. Within a day we begin to have trouble with our carbon monoxide detector upstairs. At first we thought it needed a new battery. It took a while for us to realize that we must be having carbon monoxide leaks.

In the middle of the night on Friday night January 24, we called 911. The fire department came and then the gas company. They confirmed the leak. We were told to turn our heat off and get the system fixed. We had to wait until Monday to call AHS. On Monday, January 27, we called AHS and on the 28th a representative from Oxford Heating and Air came again in the late afternoon. After spending over an hour at the house, he concluded the system was running fine and that we should turn the heat back on. Reluctantly we did. That night we're awakened with the carbon monoxide detectors going off again. We immediately turned the heat off. The next morning we call AHS again.

This time AMS called Comfort Air. Due to a big snow storm that shut down Atlanta, Comfort Air was closed. After six days in the cold, Comfort Air came on February 3rd. They said the heat exchanger was cracked and recommended a new system. Our system was 13 years old and a heat exchange was a major repair. The next morning on February 4th I called AHS. They said that they were going to send Oxford Air out again. I was shocked. This was the same company who did not find anything wrong and told us just to turn on our system again.

On February 5th, Oxford Air came. This time they sent a different technician that said we needed two new parts: a new heat exchanger and a new vest panel. Brian, the technician showed me how the vest panel we had was all rusted. They had a vest panel but would have to order the heat exchanger. It would be in Friday. February 5th or Monday at the latest. On Monday afternoon, February 10th, I called Oxford Heating and Air because I had not heard anything yet. I talked to Nicole who said they were waiting on parts from AHS. The next afternoon on February 11th I called Oxford Hearing and Air again. They said they were still waiting on parts from AHS. They would call AHS and then give me a call back.

Within 30 minutes I got a call from Baileys Appliance informing us that AHS had transferred our account to them. They wanted to make an appointment to come and look at our system I was shocked. What had happened? Why was this happening after we had already been waiting six days for Oxford Heating and Air to come back and fix our system? Why the change of vendors again and why the delay?

Baileys came over in the late afternoon on February 11th. They said the parts we needed were available locally and they should have our system fixed in a few days. That night we had an ice storm. It was very cold. The next morning I called AHS. They said that Baileys would be fixing our system. However, I did not hear anything from Baileys for days. When were they coming back? Finally I called Baileys several times over the course of the next few days. I was always promised that someone would call me back. No one did until Thursday, February 20th.

On Thursday, February 20th, Mark called from Baileys. He said we were going to owe over $400 in out of pocket costs. I did not understand why. Oxford Heating & Air never had any additional charges for us to pay. Mark was very vague about what the charges were for. He just said upgrades to the system. They would not fix our system without doing the upgrades. I talked them out of the disposal charges of $65. Other than that there was nothing else they would take off the bill.

Later that day I heard from Lauren at American Home Shield. Our account had been transferred to her in the resolution department. Lauren said someone from Baileys would be coming over that day or the next day from Baileys to make the repairs. No one ever called or came from Baileys. On Monday, February 24, I called Baileys and they said AHS had sent the heat exchanger to Buford, GA by mistake. They would let us know when it came in.

On Thursday, 27th Baileys called to schedule our repair on Friday, February 28th. When the technician at Baileys came, he discovered that the face plate (vest panel) was rusted and needed to be replaced too. I explained that that was what Oxford Heating and Air had showed me; the vest panel was rusted and had written up needed to be replaced back on February 5th. The man at Baileys who originally diagnosed our problem on February 11th had not paid any attention to what I explained about the rotted vest panel. Now we would have to wait another week or two for a new vest panel. No one in town had any.

Two weeks later, on the afternoon of March 14th, the technician at Baileys came back to fix our system. After 66 days of no heat, we finally have heat again. Where is the value added here of using AHS? Why all the endless delays and bureaucracy? Over the course of 66 days, we had three different AHS contractors, four service calls from Oxford Heating and Air, a call to 911 and a visit from the fire department and the gas company in the middle of the night, one service call from Comfort Air, and three service calls from Baileys our heating and air is working again. Just in time for spring. American Home Shield has been a disservice to our family to have been miserable all winter without heat in our home. If we did not have carbon monoxide detectors, we could have all gotten very sick, and even died.

I have had the best experiences every single time when submitting a claim to American Home Shield except for the contractors that come in. Sometimes, they might send the wrong guy out. The most recent claim we have is for electric. The electricity went out on one side of our house and it turned out that our garbage disposal had a problem too but we didn't know that. We learned of it after they sent out the Platinum contractors, who took care of the problem with the electricity. They said they got the electric part fixed for the garbage disposal and to call for a plumber.

I called back to AHS and they sent a plumber out. After the plumber was supposed to come out, we also noted that we had leaking faucets. But AHS says the faucets are not covered because of some access thing. Anyway, now they are sending out a master electrician because the plumber says it’s an electrical problem with the garbage disposal. I’ll have the master electrician between 1:00-3:00 today, so I’ll know more about the garbage disposal, but I don’t know anything about what we’re having in terms of the leaking faucets in our bathroom.

Brown water out of hot water system reported in November 2013. Since the heater does not leak, AHS denies to repair the water heater in spite of sediment accumulation everywhere in the hot water system. Every time a customer agent is contacted, they say they will fix it but no follow up. When we insist to have a plumber on site sent by them, we hear that they can't change it because it is not leaking!!!! No report of defect and this has been going on for 6 months. I have never seen such a bad organization.

The gentleman sent by American Home Shield was very professional. They did the installation and took the tank but didn't take the hoses they took off that were covering the pipes and stuff, so they left a little bit of trash behind. Other than that, the work was satisfactory. I was not happy with the fact that I had to pay an additional amount, but apparently when this home was built, the builder did not do the proper hosing to the water heater so it could have caused problems for us because the guy told me that it was not ventilated properly and we could have had carbon monoxide poisoning. Luckily for us, the water heater was in the attic and I never go up there. They had to fix that and it was at my expense.

I’m a realtor and I've used American Home Shield a couple of times. They've come out for the heater, for the washer and dryer and for the toilet. The professional service and everything else has been fabulous. My washer and dryer gave out. The bathroom fan went out. I'm still waiting for a part, nobody's called me in two weeks and it's the heater portion of it. It would be really nice with a hot bath to have a warm room but I know they can't control parts but I could've gone over to Home Depot and picked up a part myself. So I'm still waiting for that. The guys that delivered the washer and dryer to do the replacement were phenomenal. They just did a fabulous job. They took care of everything. The area was clean, nice and neat when they left.

The problem I have with American Home Shield is their vendor for plumbing sucks. We have a stopped-up toilet. The guy comes in with a snake. I understand it's a piece of equipment that they have to use. But when he finished using it, I told the guy it's dripping and he just rubbed it into the rug and into the floor. I told him that it was slow and it wasn't constant, it wasn't just the stop. As soon as he was done snaking it, he left. He didn't check to see if there's any problems. It's an open basement downstairs. I asked him if he wanted to see the plumbing downstairs, he said he didn't need to. He should have because even though the stop is gone, we still have the same problem. So now I have to have another day off work where I can have American Home Shield bring another plumber out here to wait to see if they can figure out what's really the problem because the problem wasn't one-day back-up.

I've had three claims with American Home Shield on one particular heating unit/cooling unit. It was the pump and it wasn't cooling. I've talked personally with the people at Holden Beach and they're quite good. They made three trips out here within three or four months to repair the same unit. I don’t know whether it was the unit or whether they were just fixing one thing and go on and not checking the whole system, but the third man was outstanding and checked over the whole system. So overall, it was excellent.

I am retired. I was in the real estate business for 22 years. I sold American Home Shield for every house that I listed for 22 years. That's how much I thought of American Home Shield. It was part of a program to protect the buyer. The seller bought warranty and put it on the listing and when the buyer bought the house it had a one year warranty on all the major items in the house. It helps sell houses.

I called American Home Shield and they were excellent. My claim was for an oven and the coil was broken. They came out the next day and that was it. It was pretty cut and dry. They just put in a new bottom coil. When I made the first call, they gave me a number and it was Sears. Sears said it would be about 8 days before they could repair it. So I called the number again and talked to a lady. She sent out Apple and they did a super job. He was here the next day. The representative was good; Sears was crappy. I don't like having to pay the fee but the service charge is understandable. I had a very good experience with AHS and have recommended them.

I manage some family property that's why I went with American Home Shield. But it's actually been an issue for me for many years so I end up just calling in every single time I have to put a claim in. The representatives were great. Typically, the contractors are really good. Old Time Electric is not the greatest. The guy installed something to fix the issue that I was having and literally one week later, the issue returned. I didn't put a claim in because I didn't want to get the same guy. The experience with AHS is usually painless.

My only complaint with American Home Shield is the fact that I have to wait so long for service. I was without hot water... I called in on a Friday and they don't pick up their messages until Monday morning. They're closed Saturday and Sunday. I was without hot water from Friday until Wednesday. It aggravates me and it has happened several times with Universal Plumbing. They put me at the bottom of the list every time I called them. American Home Shield representatives do their jobs and they're good at it. I don't have any complaints there. It's the local service. The last time that I called them, it was on a weekend and I had a commode completely stopped up. I'm just fortunate that I had another commode that I could use because the broken one is the one I use in my bathroom. It was very inconvenient. They're not even nice to me over the phone. When I had complained about them being so late, they said, "Well, it's in our contract. We don't have to serve you 'til 48 hours after the call comes in." That's just not the way it should be handled. I will call AHS and make a request that they send another plumbing company, but I would recommend AHS.

All the people that they have sent out have been good except for this most recent claim I had for the plumbing. I called and the representative was good and very polite but I wasn't too impressed with the contractor, because when he got out of the truck, the first thing he said was, "There's no point in going any further because you have a leak outside." He had just barely got out of the truck. And I said, "Really? How would you know that?" He pointed at the right side and said, "Well, right over there you have green grass, so that means there's a water leak, so it's right there." And he said that it isn't covered. I understand that if it's in front of my house, they wouldn't pay for it. What I didn't like was his attitude. I said, "You know what? Just leave. I'll just get somebody else to come." I have used AHS before and everything worked out. So I have no problem with Home Shield itself, it was just that one contractor.

My first experience with American Home Shield was back in November when we had a problem with the hot water heater. Submitting the claim was easy. As for my interactions with the contractors they send, I didn't have anything favorable to say about any of them except the first one that they sent for the water heater. The second one he was very good. I was thinking that they probably use people whose products and services are very inferior, and that kind of had me a little troubled because we had bad experience with the hot water heater, that was our first call. And then we had a problem with the furnace and the gentleman that they sent out said that every part in the furnace had to be replaced and it was going to take him eight hours, which he came out and it did.

Since then we had to have him back three times and I couldn't imagine how you can replace every part and the thing still be defective. With the appliance, the same thing, a small matter, we have four jets on the stove. Two were working fine and two were not. The first company sent out, he came out twice. He said there was absolutely nothing he could do other than what he had done and they still were not performing properly. And so I called back in. They sent out another company. He fixed it right on the spot and everything is working fine. I've recommended American Home Shield but I don't like the people they send out.

We've had American Home Shield for six years. Our most recent claim was for a washer and dryer issue. The top of the washer wouldn't spin. The contractor came and assessed the problem and they just didn't come back. They were supposed to come back two or three days later and they didn't come back for two weeks. She never got in touch with them so it was just getting really frustrating. The situation was kind of in limbo because the American Home Shield system couldn't just give us another contractor. They said we have to carry through with this contractor. We were actually about ready to buy another washer and then they finally came back so everything's totally fine now.

We've had a good experience with American Home Shield. This was the first time we ever had a problem. Everything has been great with them and it's a good service. We don't have to figure out what contractor to use when our washer breaks for the first time in four years and we don't really know who to call and so it's good. It's just one of the things that a big company, no one has the power to do anything and sometimes things fall between the cracks of procedures and no one really has the authority to do anything and that's kind of what happened in this situation. Overall, I still would recommend. We're not cancelling our service, but that particular instance was really bad but all the other experience over six years have been good.

And nobody would honor the warranty. They altered the pool chemistry. It's probably my fault. I didn't read the fine print where when you install your pool heater, if you don't have the perfect pool chemistry and too much acid in the water and then the pool heater goes out, that you're just SOL with a new pool heater. I'm questioning their pool coverage. But anyway, that's just right now because of the issue. But overall, I'm going to keep it. I need to read the fine print on the coverage.

I pay my payment every month, pay it on time and they draft it out of my account. When they come out, I pay my service fee. I should get the service that I'm paying for. I shouldn't be getting anything less, and we got less.

Now, they won’t correct the issue that they've done. They are going to LaToya to say that they were going to reimburse me for the ceiling fan that the man bought that was incorrect, but I had to keep the one up that he put up there that's not the right ceiling fan. Now, I'm left with very low lighting in my room. I have to use my ceiling fan light as well as a lamp light in order to have any kind of lighting inside of my room. American Home Shield was referred to me by my mom and she didn’t have an issue. She was new to it as well. I wouldn't recommend American Home Shield to anybody.

It's just the contractor that they send out was a little bit overly rushed. I got the impression because it’s like a warranty type of thing you have and the contractor didn’t seem to overly take a lot of time with things. They really need to maybe reveal a little bit of the selection of the people. I had a refrigerator that was out and I called American Home Shield on a Thursday. I didn't get my refrigerator repaired until the following Wednesday. I had a week with no refrigerator at all. I was not impressed. Actually, that call from the contractor, not American Home Shield, said the only day they have open is Wednesday at 11:00 to 2:00. I didn't really care for that. I waited a week so I thought it was kind of a snippy attitude. I was sitting here with no refrigerator and it was hot for a week.
