They came out because our water tank ruptured. We called American Home Shield, and they sent Mr. Rooter’s company to come out and make an assessment. He concurred that it was a rupture and that there was no repairing the unit, and that in order to restore service, we would need a replacement and updating of the lines to bring it up to code.
He was polite and explained what exactly would be required. He said he needed to call American Home Shield to find out what was covered and how much was covered. When he came back, he explained that the total was going to be $2,800, and that American Home Shield would cover all but $1,300, and we would also have to pay for electrical upgrades.
My husband decided that if we were going to pay $1,300 out of pocket for a service that was supposed to be a full service, it seemed excessive. So he called another company, and the entire out-of-pocket cost was $1,455, and that included the electrical work. It was a much better deal.
So we told American Home Shield that we were not going to go with their coverage of the service.

Their service was good in the past, but they have fallen a lot in recent years. We've had them in the past, and they have done really good for us. But we were really dissatisfied with this coverage now, and they've increased their yearly prices. They've increased the service price, and yet it seems like their coverage has decreased.

I put a claim online to American Home Shield for a shower leak and within two hours, plumbing called me. They were out within a couple of days and everything was resolved. The gentleman wore shoe covers in the house, very knowledgeable, very professional. From start to finish, it was fantastic. I had an incident with our microwave but after getting it escalated to a few people in American Home Shield, it got resolved.

A bunch of our family members have American Home Shield.

The most recent call that I made with American Home Shield was regarding my heater. JT Services came out and they took a look at it and diagnosed the problem that we were having. And then let me know what would be covered by American Home Shield. There was a part that was not going be covered, unfortunately.

They said that once the part is ready, they would let me know. It took about a week and then they called me back and let me know that they can come back to install the part. I had the option of also getting the part of the heater that was not covered repaired as well.

When they came out, they replaced that one part that was covered. I asked them to repair the pipe that was not covered. We had to pay out of pocket for that one. I asked him to also do a tune-up since it had been several years since we did a tune-up. And a tune up is not covered, so I wrote the check out to their company. They also gave me some tips on how to have my heater working a little bit more efficiently in our house. We haven't had any issues since then.

It's been a very positive experience with AHS. The price went up several years ago and I considered canceling because of that. But when I called in to do that, I was given a really good price so, I went ahead and I took that price. It does feel like a lot. I pay $125 every time I make a call. It used to be $75. I wish that was lower.

If there's an issue with the things in my house, I can call someone and just have peace of mind that it's gonna get taken care of. I would recommend American Home Shield especially to a friend of mine who's gonna be a first-time homeowner.

When my garage door broke for the first time, it took them like four times to go to the house. AHS keeps on insisting that they need to replace a part of the broken garage door opener, when the technician already told them that the whole unit should be replaced. So, they gave us a hard time.

And every time that the technician has to go to the house, I need to get off work early. I'm really so frustrated during that time. But at the end, I'm so glad that the contractor who worked on my garage door endorsed the total change of the unit. In the end, they ended up changing the unit. It's a brand-new motor for the garage opener, so it works very well.

AHS should have changed the unit the first time that the technician went there and told them that the unit needs to be replaced to save my time and to save their contractor's time. So, I'm really frustrated with that one. The contractor is really great, especially the technician who went in to my house, because there was some argument that we went through because I'm really frustrated at that time, and he handled the situation really well.

Last December, my water heater broke. I have to call in for a repair. I don't know if they are looking at my history, in which I gave a bad input on my previous interaction with them. As soon as the technician got there he checked my water heater. He knew what he need to do and get. In an hour, he was back and able to get the part and repair my water heater on the same date.

They had to come look at my hot water heater when it started making a weird noise. It was so loud that it woke me up at night. The technician looked at it and he saw that it was an upper heating element that might to go out but it hasn't yet. There was nothing he could fix until it went out.

The guy they sent from Dr Plumbington was a beginner. First of all, he didn't have his tools. He had to borrow stuff from me. He did an estimate. He lit the pilot. He didn't stay long enough to find out if it was gonna work or not. I had to keep calling them back. He said he was gonna go ahead and turn the order in for a new hot water heater. He did. They didn't communicate very well. I had to keep calling them back. They finally told me that they ordered it, but it was the wrong size. They had to reorder and get another one. I got American Home Shield because I had heard good things about them. My daughter has it and was raving about it. But I don't see anything to rave about it so far.

I reported an issue that our 48-inch commercial range oven wasn't working. Ben's Appliance was great. He came out several times. He was diagnosing and testing different boards and electrical components. I was happy with his work, but it ended up being deemed irreparable, unfortunately. American Home Shield has a cap on appliances, so they paid us out what was left on that, minus the labor and parts that had been used.

We've had them now for a couple of years, maybe longer. We bought a home that was built 25 plus years ago and we're anticipating some needs based on age. Rather than be stuck with a whole bunch of unexpected issues, we just wanted to have some protection there. I really like how easy it is to submit an issue and have it addressed, but I don't like that I've had trouble in the past with providers that have been sent. I've had trouble reaching out to try to get it changed. I haven't been thrilled with customer service if there's something that doesn't go the way it's supposed to. But I have recommended people get them. My sister actually did it. I've been pleased, for the most part.

I don't trust American Home Shield. We've been trying to deal with them for the last 20 years. The people that they send out are subpar. In the last two years, the services went down terribly. It's hard to get ahold of somebody. They should answer the phone without having to call several times and get back to the customer on a timely basis. We’re thinking about dropping them.

The people that they send out, they need to vet them to see if they're actually gonna come to your house. You sit there all day and then the guy calls up and says he can't make it, he has too many jobs. This is not the first time. We did it with the last person with our garage door opener. Each time, the person that we call up says he couldn't make it. The guy with the garage door asked for another $100 to put some wheels on the door. It had nothing to do with what was wrong with the door. It was the machine. So, very shady people. When the air conditioning guy came out, he asked me if I had broken the air conditioner when we tried to get that fixed. It's terrible.

The water temperature for my shower would fluctuate and wouldn't stay hot if you're in there for four or five minutes. I thought it was an issue with the tankless water heater. I submitted the claim through the American Home Shield app, and then from the app I got a call. I explained what was happening, set up an appointment for the next day and they sent someone out from HomeServe. He was professional, courteous. They had to come back because the initial person thought it was an issue with the cartridge in the water head on the knob itself and he changed the cartridge out. That didn't fix it, so another person came out and said it was an issue with the water heater and addressed it. The problem is gone now. The contractors were great. I have no complaints.

What I would fix, there's some services that you get an advertisement for, but they're not offered in the area. One of them was getting your air condition serviced during the summer for $100. I tried to get that service and it wasn’t available. So that was a little bit disappointing. But it's nice to have that kind of backup and not have to figure out who I need to contact to get it fixed. I'm pleased with the service.

Unfortunately, my dishwasher never got fixed from the end of November, beginning of December. They diagnosed it, the guy turned it on before he left. I called them 15 minutes later. It happened again. I just thought that was outrageous because it was over a month that I was dealing with the same company. I looked on BBB and they are the worst people to come and fix anything. But the worst thing about American Home Shield is they doubled my rate. They are failing. It's making us go through hoops. I'm 75 now and I'm overwhelmed. When you need them the most, they leave you. They don't hear you. They don't see what's happening.

They used to be better, faster. They used to have more expertise in what they sent. They were caring. I wouldn't hire them again. I warn other people about them. They have this beautiful website, and they're gonna do all this stuff. But honestly, they're gonna try to cheat and make the most money for themselves. All I wanted to do was make my appliance work. It's still not working. I'm actually gonna be canceling American Home Shield. It used to be such a good company.

We lost the hot water in the house. We submitted a claim and the very next day, the tech came. It was very fast. We ended up replacing the ignition switch. That particular technician for that company was outstanding. He was very informative and he explained everything he was doing step-by-step.

I told him what I checked prior so I already narrowed down the two things that were out of my league. He hit the first one and that was it. He had the part in his truck, changed the part. For that particular claim, it was good. But AHS has lost me as a customer because of the way the reps did me when it came time to double my bill and had no explanation why.

I had a claim which started off with Axis. They came out three times to fix my washer. It wouldn’t spin all the way out and it was warbly. So they came in and they put in one or two parts, thinking that was it. End of the day, they said they couldn’t figure it out and asked for it to be reassigned.

I’ve called AHS a half dozen times plus over this issue in the past months, but then it was reassigned to Fleming. Fleming came out and was shocked to see that they never even tried to readjust the shocks. The shocks were hanging and some other stuff from the prior company. It was hard to diagnose the problem because it would still come on and halfway attempt to wash, but it would never rinse.

The very last time the tech came, he tried a new part, tested it out and it still would not wring out all the way through. So after that fourth visit, they deemed it was just not fixable. I’ve had two companies out over a 6 or 7-month period. I’ve been without a washer ever since this started, which has just driven me crazy. I did a cash-out option but I haven’t heard anything since I did that a week ago.

I’ve been with AHS for several years and I always get this coverage. If it’s getting a service call, they’re responsive. They will go ahead and draw your deposit from your account and they’re responsive with sending someone out. However, I’ve not been very happy with some of the vendors. I feel like some of them are incompetent. That first vendor had been out to my house four times, and he pretty much said he didn’t know what was wrong with it, but at the same time, would never issue the order for me to proceed with getting it fixed.

When I called customer service at American Home Shield to do a second review, I was tpld I was gonna have to pay for it. I’ve already paid one fee to come. I pay $170 a month. After about 5 months with the old company that they had assigned, I was tired of going to the wash area, washing clothes so that we can have clean clothes. I almost feel as though I paid for this washer to be replaced myself because it’s gone on so long.

Overall, I don’t like the pool of vendors and the customer service. My problem went on eight months to no resolve no matter how many times I reached out to American Home Shield, and even asked for a supervisor in my situation. My experience has been difficult.

The air wasn’t flowing the way it should have been so I was trying to see if there was an issue with it. I submitted the claim over my phone and then I was referred to AirMax Heating. I didn’t have to go searching for a company and that’s the best part about it.

The service company then reached out to me to schedule the appointment. My girl was here when the tech came through and she said the tech sounded like he knew what he was talking about.

There’s a feature where you can turn up how hard the blower’s working. He turned it up and got the air flowing better. Before he came through, I couldn’t even tell if the air was even running whenever it was on. I’m standing next to the vent and I can hardly feel anything coming out.

Overall, AHS coverage is good and the online tool has made it easy. The price is competitive and it’s worth it for the monthly fee that I pay rather than have to pay something outrageous.

I’ve been with American Home Shield for over 10 years and I always had a decent experience. But last year, even if it was a covered item, it became a nightmare. I do understand that sometimes things aren’t covered. It’s too hard to get approved and even though it gets approved in the end, you’re left with a bad taste. But since then, there’s been about three claims and it’s all gone smoothly and I’m happy.

Recently, PD Plumbing came out to replace a garbage disposal and the whole process was very straightforward. The service guy happened to have one in his van and American Home Shield approved it and he did the whole repair within an hour of arriving. He was very good, polite and knowledgeable.

I would recommend AHS because, at one point, I left them and went with another group. But that group turned out to be a small outfit operating out of New Jersey and it was horrible. They literally were scam artists so I dropped them and went back to American Home Shield.

I’ve had a terrible experience with American Home Shield. It was not a pleasant experience at all. I was lied to multiple times and given conflicting information. I didn’t receive enough money to replace my furnace, and the company contracted to do the work was awful. I refused to let them work in my house because of how I was treated and spoken to.

I’ve called so many times. My furnace needed to be replaced. I had the free home check-up they offer, and the technician came in, looked at my unit for less than 30 seconds, took the cover off, and said, I need to replace the whole unit. My heat exchanger is bad.

They shut my unit down, leaving me with no heat at all. It then took them three weeks to give me an estimate for the repair. I have a two-year-old in the house, and my wife also lives here. Waiting three weeks with no heat in Pennsylvania winter is extremely difficult. The cold is intense, and this was completely unacceptable.

It’s a very large house, so heating it without the furnace was extremely difficult. I had to buy and use space heaters, which drove my electric bill through the roof and American Home Shield didn’t seem to care about any of that.

Finally, I received the price. The only thing I requested and I called multiple times, so if the calls are recorded, they could verify this was to know what brand of unit was going into my house before I approved anything. I didn’t want a low-end, bottom-of-the-barrel unit because I didn’t want to be stuck paying $125 every time it breaks.

My best friend is an HVAC technician, he does HVAC, plumbing, heating, all of that. He told me, don’t let me put a Goodman unit or any American Standard in my house. Those are the worst units. We get callbacks on them all the time, they’re constantly breaking.

So I spoke with them on the phone and asked what brand they normally use. A woman told me about Lennox and another brand. It was Trane or Carrier. I paid for the top premium plan, so I expected a decent unit. But they were trying to install a unit that only cost $850 to $1,200. My friend looked it up, and he could get that same unit himself and he’s one technician, not even the company.

The fact that I’m paying all this money, and on top of that, this company was saying it would cost $5,000 to $6,000 to replace everything. American Home Shield was only going to cover $1,400. I’ve gotten quotes from other companies to replace the unit, and even the labor without any modifications was far more than $1,400. It doesn’t even come close.

I can’t even buy a unit for $1,400. So when American Home Shield gave me $1,400 to replace my furnace, it wasn’t nearly enough. I’m covered up to $5,000 for the furnace itself. The process seemed simple. I asked the company, and after I approved everything, they called me to say the unit was in. American Home Shield had told me several times that they don’t use Goodman, they use reputable brands like X, Y, and Z. I asked multiple times if they could note that I didn’t want a Goodman unit, and they said yes, it would be put in the notes. I spoke to three different people and told them the same thing.

Then they told me the unit was in. I asked what brand it was, and they said it’s a Goodman. CJA had even told me that Goodman units are the worst. This was during the inspection. I asked which units would be good if I were replacing it. He said the same thing my buddy told me, stay away from Goodman and American Standard.

The technician they contracted literally said the unit he was installing was garbage, which really pissed me off. I told CJA I was refusing that unit. I do not want it installed in my house. On top of that, they were overcharging me, the modifications they said were needed were nowhere near what they were charging. That was another thing that frustrated me, especially since my friend does this for a living and knows the real costs.

I also had someone else come out to look at it, and when I told them what American Home Shield was trying to charge me, they started laughing. I went over everything on the phone, the cost to adjust the gas line and other modifications and they said it would only be a few dollars in parts and maybe an hour of labor. That was confirmed both by another company and by my friend, who’s also an HVAC technician.

Then the owner of CJA got on the phone and was very nasty to me. I stayed respectful and said that I understand, but if this is the unit they’re providing, I do not want it. She told me it doesn't work that way. I can’t go back to them and ask for a different unit. I either take this unit or they force me to take cash.

I said, American Home Shield got off the phone with them, they said it’s no problem and they’d send out another unit. That’s what frustrated me. Everyone I spoke to at American Home Shield said they’ll help me. But nothing ever happened, and I was lied to multiple times despite being on the phone with them a lot.

Then CJA hung up on me, they were very nasty. I called American Home Shield back and told them I refused to have CJA in my house. I spoke with the manager, and we exchanged emails back and forth. She said she would send out a new company.

The new company came out and inspected the unit. We were about to start the replacement process when the technician, this new company, also contracted by American Home Shield told me the same thing. Goodman is a very low-end brand and not great in quality. I had no problem with that, at least someone was being honest.

Now he’s telling me that American Home Shield won’t pay him and won’t let him work on my unit because someone else already has the contract. Which I don’t understand. I refused the other company, so the only option I was given was cash. So I decided to find someone else to do it and see how much it costs.

My microwave went out, so I called American Home Shield and they sent a technician from Sears. He couldn’t fix it because the model number was worn off, and he said it was policy that he couldn’t work on an appliance if he couldn’t confirm the model number. He took it back, and they sent someone from Green Wire. The whole process ended up taking over three weeks, so I was without my microwave for a long time.

They came out, checked the microwave, and ordered some parts, which were supposed to arrive in five to seven days. A couple of days ago, the second technician from Green Wire, probably the same person came with the parts. He hadn’t even installed the parts yet, but he got the microwave working.

He reset it. Two technicians before him hadn’t thought of something that simple. The process was drawn out way too long, and I wasn’t happy about that, but at least it’s fixed now.

I’ve had similar experiences. The last time I called, this was for my washing machine. I don’t remember all the details, but Sears came out and couldn’t fix it. They ordered some parts, and when the parts arrived, the technician came back to install them.

Anyway, something happened during the visit. I may have reacted a little strongly and the technician got upset and walked off. He went back to American Home Shield and reported the case as closed. Then they sent someone else out and tried to charge me for a job that was never completed, even though I had already paid for it.

Needless to say, I’m not happy with them. I’ve spent far more money than I would have if I’d bought or repaired appliances myself over the past few years. So I decided I no longer want the service.

Every time I talked to American Home Shield, they were cordial and easy to deal with. The main issue was with the service people they sent out.

I’ve had this service for several years, and during that time, the cost has gone up tremendously. Honestly, I could have bought several appliances with the money I’ve spent on American Home Shield.

I’ve had American Home Shield for three years. I like their transparency and responsiveness. They’re very quick and handle things professionally.

The claim that I had recently was about the furnace. We placed the order last year, around June or July, because the AC wasn’t working at the time.

They came and repaired the unit, but it malfunctioned again shortly after. They returned a second time and installed the same part, which still didn’t work. They did leave a temporary fix so the fan could at least run and provide airflow through the house. On the third visit, they suggested replacing or upgrading the unit. So far, I’d say the service has been good. I don’t have any complaints.

Sometimes American Home Shield is not as good as they should be. There are all kinds of people here that do electrical work and repair heating and air conditioning. But it seems that AHS goes out of their way to get somebody and it takes forever to find somebody that will do the work. The last gentleman who worked on my air conditioner, fortunately, was right here in Normandy. He was exceptionally good. I also had an electrical guy who was really good. He was just fairly close, so that worked out well. I’m happy with my experience with them, but it just takes a while. Other than that, customer service quality has been very good.

I got the warranty with American Home Shield when I moved to my place. This is the first home I owned, and my parents advised me to have insurance in case things happen. I’m so glad that I went ahead and did that. One time, our water heater went out, so cold water was coming out of the shower. The contractor came out, and they said that the water heater works great. Another company came out to do demolition, and they opened up a hole in the master closet which led directly to the back of the bathtub shower. They found out that there was a slab leak in the concrete. I also had an issue with the shower cartridge, and they replaced that.

Having issues like that can very stressful and expensive. I’m not a plumber, and I don't know anything about demolition or asbestos. I like the correspondence that I got from all parties, American Home Shield and the contractor, so I’m updated and aware of what's going on. With the constant updates, I’ve learned a lot and I have confidence that the problem would be solved. Being a homeowner could be really stressful, and having American Home Shield makes it a lot easier.

Sometimes American Home Shield is better, sometimes, they’re worse. They resolved the issue with my pressure regulator, but not to my satisfaction. It was behind the drywall in our house, and the information American Home Shield sent me was very specific saying that they would cut the drywall out and they would replace it. They even sent an email with that documentation in there. When the contractor came out to do the work, they said I had to pay them $400 to do that. I called American Home Shield and the guy said they would talk to the contractor and make sure it's covered. But nothing ever happened, so I called American Home Shield back and this time they said I had to pay $400 to have it done. I told them the information they sent me said they’d cover it, and then they went back to saying I didn’t have to pay for it, and they would get it taken care of. That cycle kept going over and over again, so I just had the work done myself. So, American Home Shield fixed the part, but they didn't take care of the drywall, cutting that out, and replacing it.

It always seems like when I put in a service call to American Home Shield and they send it out to a contractor, it's low priority for the contractor to come out and fix it. The last couple times I've called in, it's been way better. But usually it’s three weeks out, so we just have to deal with the problem until they come. Another thing is the cost just keeps going up. I talked to somebody today, and they were telling me if I called in two days before my thing renewed, they could lower the price. But now, I’m locked in for another year and they can't lower it. That didn’t make sense to me.

I'm very satisfied with American Home Shield. Just some contractors are bad, some are good. Two months ago, I called them because a washing machine was leaking. My tenant said he went there but he didn’t take the washer out. He just looked at it, said it was dry, and then left. Two days ago, it was still leaking and it went down to the unit below because the guy didn't pull the washer out to change the hose. So, now I have to pay for damages and it’s gonna cost me thousands of dollars, when it should have been fixed a couple of months ago. I've dealt with this company many times, and there’s always issues. There's also an electrician who was yelling at one of my tenants. I thought my tenant was the problem, but he also yelled at my mom. I got a different electrician, and he said that guy has been doing that to American Home Shield customers for years. Most of them are mom-and-pop shops, and in Hawaii, unfortunately, there's not as many contractors. I have about 15 contracts with American Home Shield, but I can't add new contracts anymore ‘cause they’ve pulled out. I have four more properties that I cannot add, which is disappointing.

I was extremely dissatisfied, but the other two claims were positive experiences. I had a clogged toilet and American Home Shield assigned it to Patriot Plumbing. It was gonna be New Year’s the next day, and I got a call from them saying they would get somebody out. If not, I'd have to wait for over a week. But if I gave the driver extra cash when he got to my door, they would come out earlier to service me. So, I ended up giving him 50 bucks when he pulled up. When he was in the house, he wanted $375 cash to pull the toilet, check the pipe, and to see the clog, and that's when I kicked him out of the house. I just went in there myself, pulled the toilet, and I got it unclogged.

As soon as I got a text from you guys for a survey on the service, I said it was horrible and if they ever send them out to any of my properties again, I will cancel all my contracts. I've got five contracts with American Home Shield, and I like them, but I would like to have more say on who they're sending out. I’d never heard of Patriot Plumbing, but I figured something was iffy right from the beginning when I immediately got a call and they said I needed to give them cash.

And then I washed dishes that night and I noticed there was water under there. It was leaking, so I had a bucket under there. It was New Year's, so I had to wait again. Same guy came back out and had to replace the garbage disposal, which I thought was weird because it wasn't leaking before he came out.

He was nice, fast, and efficient. It wasn't leaking before he came out. I don't know why it started leaking after the garbage disposal started working again. It just seems weird that it would leak after he fixed the garbage disposal.

My mom referred me and I feel a lot more comfortable having American Home Shield. Homeowner things are always breaking and going wrong. So it's easy to call.

We had a leak coming from the bottom of our water heater. The bottom of it was rusted. I filed a claim online and then AHS sent us Dynamic Plumbing. It took about a week till I reached out to the tech but he said he doesn’t do work for American Home Shield anymore. But with Dynamic, he was very open with his communication as far as when he’s gonna be there, what was going on and the level of expectation.

He initially showed up and walked downstairs in the basement. He looked at the water heater, and said it needed to be replaced. He made phone calls and ordered whatever it was. Next time he showed up, he came out with the water heater and replaced it. It’s been fantastic since.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with my experience with AHS. We got AHS in December of ’21 and I like the peace of mind of having it. Also, the website is easy to use and there’s just enough to qualify what you needed.

My washing machine is not working. I called AHS and then they called Sears. It’s easy to submit a claim but it’s very hard to get the washing machine fixed. It’s been like this since December 9th and we’re now January 17th. Every time the techs come out, I keep explaining to them that it’s intermittently broken. Today, they could plug it in and it could work. Tomorrow, I’ll throw a load of laundry in and it won’t work. I tried to record it and showed them that the last time they were there.

If they come in, they turn it on and it works, they walk out my door. And they tell me not to call again until it’s broken. I do call when it’s broken, but they can’t come the exact day. The tech is supposed to come again today between 10:45 and 11:15. Someone’s at my house waiting for him. And now, he says it’s the door lock that’s broken. They’re just pulling its strings, not having any idea really what’s wrong.

AHS is a very good company. When I bought the house, the Realtor gave it to us for a year free. And then after that, then I started paying for it. Besides this washing machine ordeal, everything has been fine. For the washing machine, it’s not AHS’ fault but it’s Sears’ fault. What I like most is the fact that I feel a little bit more at heart knowing that if one of the appliances go up, and they are very expensive, that I just have to make the phone call and somebody will come out and repair it without having to do it yourself trying to find a repair man, or go out and buy a brand new appliance.

But when you call, it’s very hard to understand some people on the phone because they have such a heavy accent. Also, I would tell others to shop around first to see if they could find some place within their budget. The service fee for them to come out has actually gone up a significant amount. It went from $75. And then for the washing machine repairman, it was $125.

I have been shopping around because the fees are outrageous. I did find another company called HomeCarePlus and I talked to them. They were going to charge me $79.99 dollars a month, which is more expensive than American Home. But their service calls are flat out $75. They don’t change it around.

Last summer, my air condition broke and I had to pay the $75 for them to come out. But then it actually cost me another $1,300 for them to repair it after what I’ve already paid AHS. That was a lot of money for me to put out.

They said the Beverly people would be contacting me within 48 hours. The techs came and replaced some sensors for the door to go up and down. I also had a claim last year where I was going back and forth with the Home Shield and the contractor, which took a while.

I would tell others that if they’re interested, they should go with American Home Shield. They are reliable and they tell you what they cover and what they don’t. It’s simple to submit a claim and if there’s a problem, you can always call. Their monthly fees have gone up for the past two years though.

Some people have told me that they’ve had this type of home warranty contracts, and they said that they didn’t cover issues. But for the most part, I’ve had positive experience with AHS. My experience with AHS has been so-so. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad. With my recent claim, it took a long time before the contractors came to fix the issue with my work order. I can’t get a reaction for at least 48 hours. I have to keep on following up and I never get any joy with that.

Also, the last couple of contacts with their reps, especially when something was wrong with my fridge and my plumbing, was terrible. The fridge took about five weeks and I didn’t have any confidence. And then eventually, I had to get American Home Shield to contact the manufacturer to fix the problem. It was really bad. And the guy that they sent didn’t have a clue what he was doing.

Overall, my experience with them is mediocre. Response is very slow and to try and get somebody on the phone to answer any work order is quite difficult. I am very skeptical about some of the interaction we have with American Home Shield because everything gets transferred to call center. And the call center could be in Africa or in the Philippines. Sometimes the left hand and the right hand don’t click.

I had an excellent experience with American Home Shield. I had issues with both my refrigerator and dishwasher. Two contractors came out for each of the appliance. I knew one of the guys because he’d been out before when my other refrigerator had issues. Both of them were good. It took a while for the customer service to assign the service. It also took me over a week to get the contractor to contact me, and I called American Home Shield twice or thrice. But that’s on the contractor, not on American Home Shield.

They ended up replacing both appliances, but I had to pay for the dishwasher and had to use both the gift cards I received to get a refrigerator. The refrigerator they offered wasn't comparable to my old one. They offered a side-by-side, and I don't like that because I can’t put anything in it. The closest to my old one that they could offer me wasn't in stock. With that, I just used the two gift cards and paid 100 bucks for a new refrigerator. That was my only issue with that.

But there’s one thing I don’t understand about American Home Shield. They said that if they can’t fix the appliance, they would replace it. They worked on my refrigerator two or three times, and the person said he couldn’t fix it. When I called them, they gave me a really low price that I can’t buy a refrigerator with. I asked them why that amount, and they said that they deducted all the repairs from the price of the refrigerator. That doesn’t make sense, and that’s not what I signed up for. I can’t afford to pay $2,000 or $3,000 for a refrigerator because I’m on a fixed income. That’s the big problem I have with them. They weren’t like that before. When he came, he said I needed a whole new dryer panel. Then I didn't hear anything from them, so I texted them. He texted me back asking me for the model number. At that point, it's been three weeks since I put in the ticket. When I sent him the model number, I didn't hear anything back again. I texted him about 4:45, and he said the part hasn't come in yet. I told him I don't do business like that, where I don’t know what’s going on.

I don't know if their contractors are vetted by American Home Shield. I got a whole new furnace prior to that. When they came out to look at my air conditioner this summer, the furnace was not even sealed around the back so all this air was coming out of it. And it's past my time, so now I've got to put in another ticket to get that seal fixed. So those things, I just don't like. They had to upgrade the wiring to bring it up to code since it’s an older home, so the furnace could be installed properly. Once that was done, it worked fine. Recently, it wasn’t heating the bottom floor. When May Heating and Air came out, they said a piece was missing, a transformer.

Basically, that missing part, the transformer prevents the damper from malfunctioning. Because it wasn’t there, the furnace blew air improperly. When I asked if it was installed originally, they said it’s not always located right with the furnace. It can be elsewhere in the area, and they didn’t check. So they don’t know if it was there initially.

My point was that I didn’t want to authorize any repairs if that part wasn’t installed properly, because that should have been included with the wiring upgrade. The wiring was done to prevent exactly this problem. But they said it was past the 90-day labor warranty, and there was nothing they could do.

I called back May Heating and Air and explained that it was a brand-new furnace. This shouldn’t be happening. They sent someone else for a second opinion. That technician also didn’t see the transformer which would have prevented the surge and blowout.

They were going to charge me because the damper, which opens and closes the vents to control heat on each level, wasn’t working. I thought the part should still be under warranty, so I ended up calling the manufacturer directly since American Home Shield wouldn’t handle it.

I told them I’d called the manufacturer, and they confirmed it was under warranty. The second-opinion company said they’d handle it, but that the manufacturer would have to contact them to confirm the warranty before they could proceed. The manufacturer was telling me the opposite. The company explained they have preferred vendors who know how to order parts and verify warranty coverage properly.

When I reached out to their preferred vendor, they wanted to charge me to come out and diagnose it again because they couldn’t rely on American Home Shield’s previous diagnosis. I’d have to pay for labor, though the parts would be covered if needed. I refused to pay for another diagnostic since I’d already had two opinions.

So I went back to American Home Shield and told them all of that. They said they’d notify the second-opinion company that the part was under warranty and to move forward with the process. But I never heard back from anyone. I ended up having to find an independent contractor to handle it myself, and I had to pay him again.

When they first told me what the issue was, May Heating and Air’s technician and manager I spoke with were horrible. But their front desk staff were great, the lady went out of her way to help, contacting people and calling me back with updates.

I kept asking questions if it’s covered or not, and the front desk lady did her best to help. But the technicians and managers were dismissive. They said there’s nothing else they can do, or they have to charge me for labor. They wanted to charge me $700 to install a new transformer and damper, which felt outrageous since I had paid $900 to have the wiring done properly.

When I escalated the issue with American Home Shield twice, that’s when I finally heard back. They said they would contact the second-opinion company, but I never heard anything afterward. It was too cold to wait, so I had to move forward and have someone come out that day to try to fix it. They’ll be coming back to install the transformer properly to prevent any future surge issues.

Warrior Services came out for an exhaust fan issue. I thought there might be a short because it would work sometimes and other times it wouldn’t. It was inconsistent.

He came out, and I showed him the issue. He tapped on the wall near the fan switch, then went out to his truck and grabbed a replacement. It turned out the problem wasn’t the fan, it was the switch, which was old and corroded. He replaced the switches for both bathroom exhaust fans, and that fixed it. Everything has been working fine since.

I like that I don’t have to worry about a huge repair bill. The whole claim process is simple since I can do it online. The only downside is the wait. After I file a claim, the technician can take up to 48 hours to respond, and that’s before even scheduling the appointment. If it’s an emergency, that kind of delay isn’t ideal.

We used American Home Shield once before and that was amazing. This time around, we’ve had lots of trouble. But this morning, we finally got our new refrigerator put in after three months. My refrigerator was leaking and the door wasn't shutting all the way. I put in a work order three months ago and American Home Shield sent Sears here. Sears ordered some parts, which were sent to my address, and then they said that there's a part they couldn’t find anymore, so they turned everything back to American Home Shield. I had to go to the next town over and send the parts back to Sears. And not until I told American Home Shield that I wanted to cancel my contract did things really move forward. I’ve only worked with Sears so far and I don't wanna work with them again. I didn't get anybody on the phone there, they didn't send me any emails back, nothing.

It’s good to have American Home Shield. Ever since I've had them, they have been awesome. If they couldn't rectify the problem, they totally replaced the appliance or whatever that was going on. I rave about them. I tell everybody if they can afford it, get it. My toilet was overflowing inside the house, and we were getting gurgling sounds. Draingo Inc. came out and they told me that something had to be done on the outside of the house with the septic tank. They said something was growing in there and it was clogging it up from the outside. They were very professional. They told me somebody would call me in the next 24 hours, and they did, but if they didn't, I could reach out to them. I always get that. When I set up the time with the people, they send me back a text what has been said, what my scheduled time is, and if I need to reschedule, how to go from there, and I liked that. At the time, we had a death in the family, and we had to go out of town. If I didn't have the service, the amount of money I had to spend would have been greater. But if I had been told or saw the printing, I probably would've added more for my septic tank ‘cause I didn’t see that when I signed up. Maybe that part needs to be in bold.

My garbage disposal went belly up, I had some issues with toilets, and the bathtub faucets, one side was so tight, you couldn't turn it. The plumber they sent had to come out three times. He had to get parts and get approval for the faucets, and it took a month for American Home Shield to approve work. I’ve had two claims with American Home Shield. The first time was better than the second time. It seemed like I was not talking to people in the continental United States, people that I could really communicate with. Some dude was talking about getting an independent plumber out, and if they didn't approve it, it was gonna cost me $125. I told him I'd get my own independent plumber out here and it seemed like he was questioning my integrity. So, I did not like the customer service that I received.

We had a problem with our heating going in and out. We were scared to have it on because it seemed like the pilot light was coming on and going out, and it's one of those things that you don't wanna play with fire. It wouldn't stay on, and the temperature in the house wasn't reaching the temperature we would select. It was cold, and it was right before Christmas. When we originally put it in, they said it just wasn't warming up to the temperature we desired, but it’ll come on. We had left and came back, it was out, so I called back and told them we didn’t have heat and it just wasn't acting right at all. I told them it was an out of service condition and we needed help. So, he changed the status to an emergency type scenario, and he told me to call back after four hours if I didn't hear anything. I called back to see if they had anyone and they auto-assigned the ticket to someone, and whoever they had assigned wasn't responding, so they removed that vendor from the ticket. And it became one of those things where whenever I called back, I got someone, nice people, and they said they were gonna be looking into it and someone was gonna be reaching out. I ended up escalating ‘cause I was furious, and they said someone would call me. After an hour and a half, I did get a call saying someone was gonna call me.

The vendor, Amazing Comfort, had been to our house years ago. They set up the appointment for the 24th, they came and got it working, but they still had to come back. They came back January 2nd to put in the replacement part. It was a thermostat issue in the unit where it would get hot too fast and shut down, and it wasn't fixed until the 2nd of January. I felt like it should've been quicker getting a vendor. I don't know if that's within American Home Shield’s control ‘cause people are available or they're not. And I had to change the severity of my ticket same day, and maybe that could have caused the issue too, so I take ownership of that. But since it’s fixed, I have no issues.

I had a problem with my dryer while my sister was staying in my home over the holidays. I put in my service ticket, the Sears guy called me promptly enough, came out here, and repaired it on the first visit. That's the kind of service you want.

I’m taking care of a veteran in Kerrville, and a Realtor talked him into getting American Home Shield that it would protect him from anything that they were unaware of, especially if they were incorrect installations and the like. In August I ended up having to come over and live with him for most of the time because he was having some health issues. And it wasn't until I started living with him that I noticed it was hot in the rooms. I started checking to see what kind of air was coming out of the vents and adjusting vents around the house to see if we could push a little more air over to this end. Turns out, there’s hardly any air flow.

The individual that came by ended up writing up the ticket as underrated or something that automatically denied the repair. The problem was the way they did the ducts up top coming off of the plenum was an improper installation. The guy said it was an improper installation, but those weren't the words he used when he submitted his doggone repair statement, so he was turned down. And American Home Shield thinks that willy-nilly it's okay for him to blow another 100 bucks on getting a second opinion for something that they should have covered in the first place 'cause it clearly states it on his contract. He purchased this home and he was unaware of this problem, and they have negated to be able to provide him coverage because of the way that the air conditioner guy wrote it up.

I spoke with the owner, and she said that she would reach out to American Home Shield. American Home Shield did reach out to me, but we had no resolution. Basically, the guy was agreeing with the guy that rolled out the ticket, while I flat out told him that's not what he told me while I was up in the attic and he was explaining to me what the problem was. So, very aggravated that they denied coverage for this just turned 88-year-old veteran. He was 87 at the time late last year when we informed them of this. The fellow who called me informed me the conversation would be reviewed and that he would be getting back to me. He never did. So, I'm disappointed with American Home Shield because of that.

I submitted a claim for a washer and dryer. The contractor was knowledgeable but didn’t fix the problem. The way American Home Shield does is after a service provider comes out, they'll submit a thing to American Home Shield saying the job is completed, and then American Home Shield will then send an automated response thing asking to rate the service provider. Since I had an ongoing issue with the washer, I gave him a lower score, so he got offended and wouldn’t come back out and service the equipment again. So, it went back into American Home Shield's queue for them to reassign it to a new contractor, but a week had passed and they still had not assigned it to someone new, so in the interim, I just decided to bite the bullet and buy a brand new washer and dryer. They called me on a Friday and asked if I had any questions related to the ticket and I told them they never assigned it to another contractor, and I just decided to buy a new washer and dryer and be done with it. American Home Shield just closed the ticket. I've had a couple of issues with American Home Shield in the past with that very thing, sending out someone that either couldn't fix it or wasn't as knowledgeable as they should be, and they've had to send out multiple repair service companies in the past. That’s one of the reasons why I'm cancelling the service. Another reason is the rate keeps going up.

We reached out to American Home Shield, and they sent Trophy Plumbing. They came out, they were trying to get it to work, and they ended up having to order several different parts. It was about a week when he came back. It was the same guy, and he was a big help. The heater was blowing cold and making a weird, squeaky sound. They came out and repaired that, and I was thinking about calling them back because it's really loud for a heating unit. My other unit doesn't make that sound. I don't know what they did or if it's a different motor, and I was just curious. But it’s not the worst thing in the world and my house is working again. I used to hate American Home Shield because some loophole happened 20 plus years ago. My AC broke in one of my condos and it was in the middle of dead summer. They came out and said it’s not covered. I told him I made sure that it was part of the contract, but he insisted it wasn’t covered. My dog had a heat stroke and died, so I was furious.

I've had four other ones and American Home Shield was gifted to me for a year when I purchased a house. I just called the 1-800 number and it was the easiest. At first, it was kind of annoying because you're not dealing with anybody from here and their accents were crazy. But I got used to it, and I have no complaints as far as setting up claims. The response time, I have two policies with American Home Shield, and it took almost three weeks to get something repaired in my other property. Partially it was because of parts, but I got very frustrated because nobody knew what was going on and I had to call five different people to find out. But at the end of the day, the situation was fixed the way that they said in the contract. Things happen, so it could have just been a one-off.

The other one is, I had my stove fixed last year, and I knew it was gonna go out again. I asked him if he could fix a part because the other ones before had gone out. He said it had to be completely broken for them to fix it. Sure enough, three months later, that part went out and I had to call again. But I get it, I understand policies. Everything else, as far as customer service and all the other things, I can't say too many bad things other than those two, and it'd be really cool to deal with Americans.

It's more expensive than it was last year or the year before that, if I'm not mistaken, and there are a few things now that have gone out that it's just worth me fixing because it's cheaper than the deductible. But the price change hasn’t been that bad and I don't think I'll be getting rid of American Home Shield.

My last service was for a condo I rented to one of my children. The service was good to a point, but I have to wait for the provider to come out. When he arrived, he said he could only replace one of the four faulty GFIs. He explained he had to take the paperwork back to the office, get approval from American Home Shield, and then come back to fix the rest.

In the meantime, I found another GFI in the garage that was also tripping. I called the vendor and explained it wasn’t three more, it was four. They said they couldn’t add the fourth one because they needed a photo and that I’d have to pay a whole new service fee and submit a new order.

This isn’t the first time it’s happened. At my home in Paso, the same thing occurred. When something breaks, there’s this whole waiting process. They can’t fix it on the spot, it’s considered a separate order, so I have to pay another fee. That’s my biggest complaint with American Home Shield.

They usually make me wait while they get approval, and then American Home Shield decides whether they’ll fix it or pay me out instead, which they’ve done before instead of completing the repair.

We’re really busy people, and honestly, it’s a hassle. I pay this money, and the rate keeps going up every year. It got to the point where I’ve asked myself if I even need this or would I be better off hiring contractors directly, I haven’t had the time to really sit down and do the cost analysis to figure that out.

I’ve had recurring issues, that was the air conditioner at the condo. It took about four years to resolve. Every contractor who came out said there wasn’t a problem, but the kids insisted there was, especially since their electric bill had gone up to around $700.

Finally, one of the vendors came out and said that this unit is freezing over which is not good. They need to let it defrost and they’ll come back tomorrow. They were the best. It really shows that a lot of it comes down to the quality of the vendors they send.

So, it really depends on the companies they send. Lately, I’ve found a good one and kept their name. Now, when I file a claim for the air conditioner, I call American Home Shield instead of going online and requesting that specific vendor. Calling customer service isn’t always easy. It often feels like a call center outside the U.S., which can create a language barrier. Sometimes it seems like they’re reading from a script and repeating the same responses.

Mr. Rooter plumber came in, determined that the garbage disposal needed replacing, and replaced it. He was on time, did what was needed, and completed the work efficiently. The representative was very respectful. He acknowledged my home, cleaned up thoroughly after finishing the work, and didn’t leave any trash behind.

I’ve had American Home Shield ever since I started using a service. The only issue I had with them was with my home in Louisiana. They came out to fix my heating unit, but later said it was a pre-existing condition, a split in the unit. I didn’t know that. The year before, they had fixed it and didn’t find any split. They replaced a $700 part then, but the next year, when the unit was inspected, they should have found the split. Instead, they refused to fix it. Because of that, I canceled service for my home in Louisiana.

I haven’t had any major problems. The only issue was with my refrigerator, they sent a technician three times before finally replacing it. I ended up spending more money than I felt I should have, around $300, which wasn’t terrible. Aside from that, American Home Shield has replaced washers and stoves, and I’ve had no issues with their service in Texas.

People have called me trying to get me to switch to other companies, and I’ve also received offers from American Home Shield for their Platinum plan. When I can afford it, I plan to go that route. My daughter keeps telling me I’m paying a lot, but with the $100 service fee plus the monthly fee, I can’t really complain. It went up from $75 to $100, which I understand, and I’ve never had any real complaints.

I was recommended to American Home Shield by someone years ago, and I’ve been with them for five years. I wish their service in Louisiana were better so I could use it there again.

I’ve been with American Home Shield for more than five years. Recently, Jones Family Appliance was on time and cordial in repairing my stove. Customer service was good. The first technician they assigned, I had already looked up and didn’t want them, and she said they have another name. I picked someone else I was happy with, and I was very satisfied with who they sent.

I had no problems. The last time I used a plumber, probably five years ago, it went smoothly as well. I know there are a lot of issues people talk about, but my experience was good. The person who helped me was named Molly, she guided me through the process and made sure everything got fixed.

The first time I had to use them, I went through hell and back and that was the only time I’ve had to use them. I was considering canceling, but I’ll hold off for now to see if anything happens again.

I know people have had many problems with furnace service, so I’m waiting to see how it goes. Mine’s working fine so far, but I’m cautious. I know of cases where unlicensed people were sent out, and customers ended up having to pay for changes and extra work. I’m concerned I might run into problems in this area. I can’t get a higher-up to talk to easily. I was lucky to find Molly to help me, and I don’t even know if she’s still there.

The customer service people can be hard to understand and deal with. If I say I’m not happy with this, they don’t seem to care. I know they’re probably calling from another country, not the U.S., but that’s not ideal. They’d do better with local staff. For now, I’m sticking with them, but at the first real problem, I’m done.

We've been in this house for 25 years. When we first moved here, there was AHS and so we kept it in. We dropped it and then we decided back in 2017 that we were gonna pick them back up. And I looked at the reviews and a lot of people that I worked with with the government have recommended them as well.

Every time I've contacted them I haven't had a problem. When our refrigerator went out, and they sent us a check for us to replace it. We had to pay a little bit more but we understand. They've always been very responsive.

A few years ago I would get someone from another country when I called them. I couldn't understand them, and they couldn't understand me but they've improved. Maybe they looked at their organization to see that there were some complaints coming in, because I had even told one of the gentlemen that actually took his time. I said, “I don't want to speak to anybody unless they can speak proper English.”

I don't have a problem working with people of varied backgrounds, but when I'm spending my money, I need somebody that I can understand, they can understand, and it's not repeat this, that back and forth. So they have improved in terms of communication, and last time, when I called for Lockhart, I liked the way that the system was set up, because the only thing I had to do was speak about the issue. And then I received a text as well as an email about a dispatch. I don't have to go through all that holding and hold on. And then I can also hear people sometimes talking in the background, and that really can mess up your train of thought in terms of what the issue or what the problems are. I noticed that the last time, whatever they did, they improved it with this new automated system. They dispatched, someone was scheduled no later than 48 hours.

When the downstairs toilet was leaking very badly, Billy came out, and he took care of the repair. We haven't had any leaks or any problems since. My husband said all is well. It's working just fine. Billy was very professional. He was able to get everything taken care of in a very short period of time. He was very good, so well that we have a leak that's in the bathroom upstairs, the shower that leaks. I told him that we'll probably be contacting AHS again to have him come back, and he said that if we wanted them again, I could request them from AHS.

AHS was quick in getting a contractor out here because it was during the holidays, and Billy came out on New Year's Eve to resolve the issue. He cleaned up. He took the old towels and cleaned up the area. I intend to use them again.

I'm paying a monthly fee. You can't get a plumber to come out for $125 an hour. So, at least, it's one flat amount. AHS will send out reviews. I'm telling them about performance, so that's a way for them to track performance and make sure that they keep a database of contractors that they will know will be able to perform and be successful to keep the customer happy. Their price is reasonable. I would like to have it lowered, but I think it's a fair market price.

The garage door was not opening properly. It was going up and getting stuck. It was only going up about a foot. I filed a claim and spoke to an actual person because we needed to know exactly what was covered. The prompt just kept saying garage door opener which is the little remote clicking device from your hand, so I wanted to talk to a person. The rep came back after putting us on hold and confirmed with her manager that it is covered– the motor, the gears, the springs, everything that opens the door but not the door or the wheels itself. She charged us $100 and Winston Doors came out and fixed it.

I like them. They were a little late, but I get it. They were further away. The guy was very nice. He apologized.

He checked it out, and he was knowledgeable. He knew exactly right away. He grabbed his toolbox and a ladder from the truck, and came in and he fixed it. He just adjusted the springs. He sprayed something on the wheels so it would glide easier. And he tested it four times.

We've had American for about five years. Their commercials are hilarious. It made me remember them and pick up the phone. The individual contractors vary from good to not so great. The garage door issue was resolved within a week. We had another incident where the technicians came out, but they couldn't figure out the problem. It took three months to fix our stove and our clothes washer.

The contractor’s receptionist kept going on and then forgot the schedules. I told AHS they guys can't figure it out and were just wasting time. We don't have an oven and we have to wash clothes at a laundromat. And it's not only time-consuming but expensive so they finally changed it to a different contractor and they were on the ball. The technician knew exactly what it was and fixed it. He had to order parts and that took a while.

I had my sister sign up for AHS because I gave her good feedback. I told her things go wrong and it's expensive. If you need a plumber or you need an electrician or an appliance goes out in the kitchen, and they can come out and fix it for 100 bucks, then you're not gonna be so bummed. But sometimes, a year or two go by, you pay, and nothing happens. But that's insurance.

It is sometimes difficult to use the website when choosing the issue. But it was easy when it was for my dishwasher. They need a little bit more of a human element to explain what's wrong and make sure you get the right person coming. When I call, they pick up quickly. However there was one time that I was on hold for a bit.

They should listen to customers' feedback on the contractors a little more. I could not have been the first person who was dissatisfied with one of their contractors. And to keep that contractor with that horrible service level is not a good reflection. It makes them look bad. If somebody complains one time, they need to investigate it.

The ice maker was working intermittently then one afternoon, there was water running all throughout the freezer and out on the floor in the kitchen. The water didn't shut off to fill the ice and just kept running. I filed for a claim online and it was easy. I got the name of the contractor and their phone number. They were top-notch.

The guy who came here was very knowledgeable and had a great personality. He troubleshot the problem, told AHS what the problem was, and asked if I had any questions. And he said he ordered the parts and would come back when the parts were in, which he did. The ice maker is working perfectly now, just like from the factory.

I'm very pleased with the service and couldn't ask for any better. The service was fast, friendly and professional. Having American Home Shield is a really good investment.

I've had other calls with American Home Shield and it's been resolved efficiently and quickly. But with this recent issue, the technician from the first company they sent out did not turn on the washer, did not pull it out, and after five minutes said, “I’m gonna need to consult with Whirlpool.” He then came back and said it was not working correctly because of overloading.

I disputed it with American Home Shield and said we’re a family of three adults and we don’t overload it. When we wash, it's not like with a bunch of kids and a lot of stuff. The problem was that it was leaking from underneath, and I felt that the guy who came over was not adequately trying to diagnose anything. He didn’t even seem to know what to do, “You're calling up Whirlpool? You're supposed to be the person here that's gonna look at this and see what's wrong. How are they gonna look at it over the phone?” So I requested a second opinion, but AHS told me that if they had the same finding, I would need to pay for that second call, meaning I'll be out of $200 possibly for nothing.

My understanding is that their policy is to either fix the appliance or replace it, so I didn’t agree with the first evaluation where they said it wasn’t covered. They did send another person out from Foster’s Appliance, and they ordered a part and said they were wanting to come back and replace it. But I’m affected by the California wildfires and can’t get to my home, and the document they left is at my home, which I can’t get to. So we can’t have them come out right now.

So my assumption is that the information from the first group was incorrect because the second appliance company had a different diagnosis, and it's being covered under American Home Shield. This was different from the first evaluation, where they said, “Well, that's not covered, it’s overused, and basically, you're gonna need to pay.” In the end, the representative said they would waive the service call fee for the second company.

We’ve been without a refrigerator for over a month now. A technician from Book’s Appliances and Repair came out initially and ordered a part. The refrigerator worked for maybe about a week and then the thing went out again. So I said, "Okay, so was the part not right initially?" It was a relatively new refrigerator, so I thought that them getting the part would resolve this.

Now, American Home Shield sent out a new company that we're dealing with. The guy who came out couldn’t really assess the situation because the refrigerator was turned off. I said, "Turned off?" And so I asked my husband, "Did he show you how it was turned off?" thinking that maybe we did something. It turned out the refrigerator didn’t work.

The technician was able to turn it back on and the refrigerator worked for a week, but the thing has gone off again. He has now ordered a part, and whatever kind of part it is, I don’t know. They didn’t call me as I requested to tell me what the part is.

Right now, we’re keeping food at multiple houses or trying to preplan what we’re going to cook. What we’re primarily doing is cold cuts because we’ve got a cooler with ice in it. I have not reached out to American Home Shield yet. But when I do, like I did about the first company that I was having issues with, they immediately changed to this new company and didn’t send the old one back out. So they’re very responsive and I don’t feel like they’re overcharging me.

I’m paying the monthly fee and then any service fee with AHS. It’s kind of costly, but it’s a very worthwhile service. What I like about them is you can pick your plan and coverage to fit your budget.

We had a claim for a refrigerator that goes back to December. The first time we had a problem was in May, but we didn’t actually report it. We didn’t realize we had a problem until December when we noticed mold on the bottom of our boxes when we brought them out of the closet for Christmas.

So we called American Home Shield and found out there was a problem with the valve in the back of the refrigerator for the ice maker. That got replaced, but the people who replaced it didn’t do it properly. So it got replaced again, and we put in some water detection sensors there. About two weeks after that, the sensor went off, so we called them back again. The same guy came back and could not reproduce the problem.

We’ve had two or three attempts to get it fixed, and right now they’re trying to ring Frigidaire, who is the manufacturer of the refrigerator, to see if they can figure out what’s going on. We haven’t heard back from him to see when that’s going to happen.

So far, our experience with AHS hasn’t been too bad, except for the one that did it wrong.

I had American Home Shield in Louisiana when I lived there, and it was fine. But since I've moved up here, it’s been awful. They came out to fix the oven once a year ago, and it started working for a while. The oven always worked, but the fan doesn't go off. And it started not going off again, so they came out and tried to fix that again.

They also replaced the gray rubber band in my washing machine, that area where you have to wipe out because it was black with mold, which was great. But since they replaced that, sometimes the washing machine doesn't work and you have to move everything around and try it again.

Recently, my freezer was not working. I put in the original claim in September and only on December 23rd did they come out and say they needed parts. Basically, American Home Shield is blaming Mr. Appliance, which is the contractor, and Mr. Appliance is blaming American Home Shield for not approving the cost for the parts. I literally didn't have a freezer from September until December 23rd, which was awful. I asked them to send a different contractor, but they told me, “If we get a new one, it'll take even longer, so let us see what we can do with them first.”

So Mr. Appliance came and fixed it on the 23rd. However, when the first guy came out, he broke the styrofoam box thing that goes into the freezer surrounding it. They're supposedly waiting for another one of those. I was out of town for two weeks, and the only follow-up I got was just a voicemail. American Home Shield, once in a while, leaves me voicemail just saying they called, but not a word about, “We've called and we're waiting.” Nothing.

It's working now, but when I came home on Monday, it was making really loud noises. And for about a half hour every day, it's still making loud noises. I was about to call American Home Shield this morning and Mr. Appliance because I need to get this fixed or I want a new freezer.

As for the oven fan, it still doesn't go off. After three hours, the fan's still on. Even the next day, the fan's still on, so I have to throw the switch and turn the circuit breaker off after I'm done using the oven. I'm very disappointed.

I’ve had a few claims submitted with American Home Shield. Back at Thanksgiving, we had issues getting an appointment set up because both my roommate and I are school teachers and were at work all day. Our remaining roommate, who was at home, is visually impaired, so I explained the problem we were having to R & R Electrical Allstar when they called. They came out, and our roommate said the technician didn’t make sense. The technician claimed it wasn’t the house's electric but the wire coming in off the pole.

I didn’t get a formal report from them, and when I finally called, I was told the claim had been denied. I didn’t understand because no one has given me a diagnosis. They told me the guy said the power company had to come out because the wire leading from the pole to the house was the issue.

So, I called Duke Energy because if it's their responsibility, they're going to get their butts out there and fix it. When the power company came out, an ex-student who’s a friend of ours happened to be there, so the guy had her take pictures. She talked to him, and the guy said that it was not the wire from the pole but a fried wire in our breaker box. So, the reason things are flickering is that they're just irking, and he said it was potentially a fire hazard.

I called AHS and told them what the power company said and that I have pictures if they want to see them, but they argued with me. I made them send it to escalation, and I was threatened by escalation that if it turns out to be the exact same thing, they were going to charge me for another service call. I asked for a second opinion because the first technician they sent was not competent.

Whitney T Holdings was the second company assigned, but there was confusion because they couldn’t fit me in before Christmas. I was furious and told them I was leaving on a cruise, so they would need to coordinate with my roommate, who doesn’t usually handle this stuff. He set up the appointment for Friday, the 27th, and texted me to tell me. Then, after I texted to confirm the time, they said it would have to be Monday, the 30th.

Before that happened and before I even went on the cruise, I got a second text notice that Cosmac was assigned to do the second opinion, which confused me because I didn’t know why two people were assigned. Whitney refused to talk on the phone and would only communicate by text, so we couldn’t have a conversation. I was very frustrated with them. Cosmac, however, picked up the phone and talked to me. They’re located within 15 minutes of my home, and I wanted them to come out because they were willing to actually have a conversation, while Whitney clearly was not interested in talking.

Whitney came out to the house instead and found the issue. He said that it was in the breaker box and showed it to me. He took the meter off to turn the power off and put it back when he was done. He said that this should be covered because it's in the breaker box.

However, I didn’t hear back, and then I got an email telling me that the report was being processed and I’d hear back, but I never heard anything. When I finally called, I was told it had been denied, which I didn’t understand because it’s in my breaker box and they cover my electric claims. I had the same conversation with two different people because they were reading a script and using the exact same words. This thing is a mess, and I'm just so furious about the whole thing.

American Home Shield is flat out pricier for what I get for my dollar. We have had them for over 20 years, and for years, we went without a problem. They covered everything, and there was never a question or an argument. During COVID, the air conditioning went out. They finally found the part, but the system was so old it couldn’t be taken apart and put back together. They replaced the air conditioning, and I had to pay part of it. I wasn’t happy about that, but it was a minor amount compared to the cost of the AC.

The problems started when the oven died. The people who installed it didn’t install it correctly, and we nearly had the oven come flying out of the wall on top of someone. I tried to get someone at AHS to take responsibility and told them they needed to send someone out because they didn’t fasten the oven. It’s a wall unit and has screw holes in it, but they never screwed it in. It’s literally just sitting in a hole, and if you put anything on the door when it’s open, the whole thing flies forward.

Usually, I get no information about the contractors before they show up. They allocate the claim to somebody, and they will call us to schedule. They give the name, and that's it.

As of now, American Home Shield is okay and a good service because we can get all the specialists, electricians, or plumbers, or all these people ourselves, but the costs are really high nowadays. I started around $50 per month, and now they are charging $89 per month in some of the houses, so it has become very costly. I’m also not getting my money’s worth for a serious issue and have to call several times. And I had to call him back because it was still doing it. Not as much, but it was still doing it.

The tech said, "Well, I've changed everything inside the tank." He talked about putting dye in the tank to just see if it's draining through. And I didn't have no dye. I tried it and I just gave up. It doesn't kick on that much, so I didn't even call him back.

ALICIA: The price could be improved.

I've got a 24-year-old HVAC unit that they’ve fixed now and then, and it’s still running.

There are years we don’t use AHS at all.

Their prices aren't great. There are some plans you can just get certain things on it. But we've got the plan that covers everything that they offer. I don't remember what we paid when we first started it. But now it's gone up to $197 a month. Of course, they blamed COVID.

They only listened to contractor. When the contractor first came and put the parts in, it was not fixed. They changed the contractor and I had to wait with a broken microwave for more than three weeks.

Before that, I had a claim with my toilet that I told American Home Shield was the contractor's fault. They sent another contractor and, because it is the prior contractor's fault, American Home Shield did not pay me anything. They just gave me a lump sum amount. It was a big frustration with them.

Submitting a claim is easy. I can select the options and provide the input in the text field. The main hurdle starts once the technician is assigned and I have to wait. I'm basically on my own. I believe it's better directly get a technician than using a warranty

The contractors have medium level of knowledge. Whenever there is a problem, they either order another part or a part that's not right and the problem is still there. Because of that, my dryer is still not fixed. They also give a false report to American Home Shield that it's working fine.

When the technician came, I showed him one of the parts that was destroyed and also the videos of exactly what's going on. He claimed he was going to order three different parts, and they would come back to install those parts.

After waiting almost a month, the same technician came with only the rubber for the door, which was leaking. He said that my dishwasher was now working fine even though other issues were still happening. He was so rude, raised his voice, and claimed everything was working fine, that there's nothing he has to do, and that he shouldn't order any other parts. I tried to ask him if I could show him again the same part that was broken, but he refused and said that I was making up those claims.

My problems have also been with American Home Shield, because it seems they were not actually very professional. They told me they couldn’t send another technician until they had the report and closed the first case. When they finally had the report and closed the case, I asked them again to send another technician, and they told me no, they couldn’t do that because the case was already closed.

Also, the first technician wrote in the report that I asked them to change cosmetic parts in my dishwasher, which is what they claimed. Later, a manager called and said he would come change one part. I told him that their technician said that there were two other parts that should be changed, but he told me he would only change one part, and if I didn't like it, they were going to close the case. I told them to close it, because that was what I asked in the first place.

Eventually, American Home Shield refunded the money I paid the first technician. They then took the money again and sent another technician from a different company. The new technician found a problem with other parts that the first technician missed, and these needed to be removed. He also found that even the leak, the only thing that should have been fixed by the first technician, was not fixed. There was a leak in my dishwasher that I didn’t notice, but the new technician saw it and showed me exactly where it was leaking. They ordered a part, and after one week, they called me to say they had it. They came and fixed the dishwasher, then told me to try using it for one week to see if the issue is resolved.

This was my first year with American Home Shield, and I will not continue working with them. I tried to speak with them and even offered to leave their company. They offered me a $250 refund for some of the claims I made and told me I wouldn’t have to pay anything for the first two months. But I told them I would pay $500 just to not be a customer with their company, because they were not professional in any way.

They call themselves American Home Shield, but whenever I called, I expected to speak with someone at least in the United States, or at least know they had 24-hour customer service outside the U.S. But when I asked to speak with a manager, they kept sending me to customer service centers in Ghana and the Philippines. Both of them lied to my face and gave me different answers. One time, one of them lied to me about my water heater. They gave me a cash-out option, and I was told by one representative that the amount does not mean that they will not fix my water heater, that the money was to help me pay the other expenses. But another representative told me the cash-out meant they would no longer be responsible for the issue.

Another issue I have with American Home Shield is that they make clients waive their right to join any class action lawsuit against them when renewing. Unless they’re doing something wrong, why would they make people waive that right?

We had American Home Shield come out because the coil was out on the AC, and it took them about 48 days to fix it. The temperature was 92 degrees at night. We had to sleep where there was air conditioning and come back just to cook, wash clothes, and have internet. We kept calling back and forth, but their customer service is overseas and doesn’t speak English as a first language, so they didn’t understand me a lot of the time. You’d get one story one time and a different story another.

Eventually, after I contacted the Federal Trade Commission and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, it got fixed. But we never knew if the service technician was telling us the truth. He tried to tack on things we did not need, and if my husband didn’t know a lot about air conditioners, we'd have probably been suckered into paying almost $600 out of pocket. He also didn’t install the heat strips until my husband brought that to his attention, even though he already had them.

Then, when our dishwasher went out, the first technician didn’t call us, so American Home Shield reassigned it to Fletcher. The technician was amazing—polite, very knowledgeable, and thorough. He came out, diagnosed the issue, explained what was wrong, and fixed it. He didn't say we needed this or we didn’t need that, like the air conditioning guy did. He just did what was needed, and we didn’t have to get a new dishwasher.

The problem with American Home Shield is that there’s nobody you can talk to. I talked to people who work with Realtors and AHS—they're in this country, speak English, and can understand me—but they can’t help at all. All customer service calls are sent overseas to people who don’t understand. It would be so simple if I could just tell somebody, “Hey, this is what we need. Why are we getting this story or that story?”

Even for a cashout, they wouldn’t explain what it was. They said that if I wanted a cashout, they would send it to the cashout department, and in about three weeks, I would get a check. I wanted to know how much I was going to get first. If someone spoke English, they could find out the amount, let me know, and then I could decide. But with these people, they have a little script they have to read and can’t answer anything except what the script says. If I ask to speak to a supervisor, they’ll say the supervisor will call within three days, which is baloney because I wanted to talk to someone immediately. If I could just talk to somebody in America, it would solve so many problems, and they could explain what was going on.

With the air conditioner, they said they ordered the air handler from one place and the coil from another, but I don’t think they really did. They told us one part was in, but they were still waiting on the other, and then they said it wasn’t available. We called around and found the coil at Baker Distributing in Beaumont for $1,200, which was cheaper than what American Home Shield paid, but by then, they finally said they had a coil.

It’s just frustrating and ridiculous to be sweating in the heat for all that time without answers. I wish I could talk to someone in the company and tell them they need to improve their customer service because it would greatly improve satisfaction. People tell us all day, “Don’t use American Home Shield.” Even service technicians won’t work for them because of these problems. If they can improve their customer service, then I’d recommend American Home Shield.

The first contractor that American Home Shield assigned to us never contacted us, and I probably waited too long because it was during the holidays. When I finally contacted AHS to tell them I had never heard from the contractor, the lady was a little snarky on the phone. I'm not trying to be critical at all, but she acted like I didn't know how to contact the contractor, which I did and had tried. AHS gave us a phone number, and the phone number was not even in service.

She said they’d check on it and get back to me, and when they did, they said they couldn’t reach the contractor either. Eventually, they assigned a different contractor, Nick's Plumbing and Heating. This second plumbing company has been phenomenal. They’ve communicated with us consistently and have been very helpful.

They have come out twice. The first time, they changed a capacitor on the outside unit, but we lost heat again. Then they changed the motor, and we lost heat again. Finally, they came out again and said they would have to replace the whole unit in the attic. We still don’t have heat on the second floor from our heat pump, so we’re using space heaters at night. Yesterday, Nick contacted us to make sure we had gotten the paperwork that we needed to approve the $400 that was not covered, which we did. Apparently, now the parts are ordered, so it’s just a matter of getting them in.

We’ve been with American Home Shield for probably two to three years. The reason we decided to get coverage was because our son was with them, and he recommended it to us. I like that with this service, I don’t have to do all the footwork. Probably the one thing I would say that could be improved would be for American Home Shield to follow up in maybe 72 hours once we file the claim and make sure we've heard from the contractor. It sort of feels like they wash their hands of it unless you complain.

It was for the air conditioner and heater unit. Both the indoor and outdoor units were making a loud noise, loud enough that it sounded like a mower or somebody driving a vehicle. I tried to explain to the technician that we’ve had this unit for several years and it has never made that noise. At first, he couldn’t figure out what was wrong. While he was there, the unit wasn’t making the noise as loudly. He didn’t seem to know what he was doing.

He took parts apart and lost one piece in the leaves. I think he found it, but I’m not completely sure. He said the unit was just going into defrost mode and that’s what was causing the noise. But after all these years, it’s never made that noise before.

I felt like he just blew me off and acted like I didn’t know what I was talking about. He was talking to someone on the phone to learn how to force it into defrost mode. I wasn’t happy with the service. He told me everything was fine and that it was still heating, so we left it at that. But it’s still doing the same thing. It still makes noise every time it comes on.

I’ve had American Home Shield for about seven years, and the cost just keeps going up. For what I pay every month, I don’t use it very often. I’ve only had a few claims. At some point, it seemed better to just save the money and pay someone directly when something needs to be fixed. What I do like is not having to find someone myself. They did really well for several years, but the service call fee has gotten too high.

I don’t interact with American Home Shield much because I usually handle everything online. The claim before this one was for a ceiling fan, and it took weeks to get someone out. They went through two companies that were supposedly coming, but no one ever called. I’d check online and see that the request was canceled. It wasn’t until the third company that someone actually came out. It was close to a month just to have the ceiling fan looked at.

Different people came each time, and they were all friendly and professional. They found the problem, and the heating has been working fine since.

I don’t call American Home Shield very often, maybe a couple of times a year. This heating issue was a major one, and they handled it well. I don’t have any complaints. I do think I pay a lot for the coverage, and based on what I’ve paid versus what I’ve used, they’re probably ahead. But that’s what insurance is for.

I was using a heater in my office, and it tripped the switch on the electrical panel outside. The contractor came out, reset the switch, and everything worked fine. He told me to be careful using that type of heater because it draws a lot of electricity. It was a much simpler fix than I thought it would be. The claims process was very easy, and the contractor was top‑notch. He was only here a few minutes.

What I like is that American Home Shield gets back to you. When we submit a claim, we’re immediately given the contractor’s phone number and contact information. It's all done quickly, and then it’s just a matter of scheduling with the contractor.

What I don’t like is that sometimes they keep repairing an appliance and have to come back multiple times, when it probably would have been cheaper to replace it. I know they have standards, but unless the repair costs less than 50% of a new appliance, they just keep fixing it. We’ve experienced that with a dishwasher.

I couldn’t get power to the thermostat, or it would just shut off, so the heater wasn’t turning on. American Home Shield emailed me with the company that was coming out and the time slot. The only issue was that I didn’t get a notification that the technician was on his way. He showed up while I wasn’t home, which was awkward.

The technician explained what he did. He used a small electrical device to check if there was power in the line and said there wasn’t. He went up to the attic where the furnace was, checked the cables, and found one that was loose. He said the vibration from the heater caused it to come loose, which is why I wasn’t getting power. It’s working now and hasn’t given me any problems since.

I was satisfied with the company that came out this time. I’ve had other claims with American Home Shield where I wasn’t very happy, and that’s why I didn’t renew. I had two houses covered with the home warranty and stayed with them for about a year. After the experiences I had, I chose not to renew.

I would only recommend a home warranty to someone who doesn’t know any handyman or how things work at all, maybe a new homebuyer. I liked having a set $125 service fee and knowing someone would come out and hopefully fix the problem. I also liked the fixed monthly fee and that I could cancel anytime. I believe I signed up through a Black Friday deal, so the monthly payment was low. That was a good program.

The problem came when I actually needed to use the warranty. They would find excuses not to fix things. I had times when a service provider came out, said it wasn’t covered, and I had already paid the $125. When I asked for a second opinion, they told me I’d have to pay another $125. I didn’t agree with how some of my claims were handled. I liked the ease of use and the set fees, but not how they dealt with the claims.

I needed a faucet replaced. The contractor came out a couple of times, and eventually they replaced it. The new faucet isn’t really comparable to the one I had before. I think the old one was better. It was older and different, but this one is fine. I can live with it.

Last time, I really got screwed. The technician came out but didn’t replace the faucet. He fiddled around with it and got it working. This year, I had to call again, and he ended up replacing it. I had to call American Home Shield twice and pay $200. Anyone could have seen that the faucet should have been replaced the first time. That wasn’t good.

Overall, the people the home warranty sends out usually do what they’re supposed to do. I haven’t had to use the warranty that much, which is probably a good thing. I’ve mostly had small things done, and those have been okay. It’s good to have the warranty just in case.

I’ve had American Home Shield for about 15 years. I’ve had issues with my air conditioners and other things, and they usually come out quickly. You don’t have to wait too long. The only time it took a while was during COVID because they had trouble getting parts. This was the first time I’d used them in a couple of years, and it wasn’t bad.

The one thing I don’t like is that the price keeps going up, but that’s like everything else. I pay every month, and then there’s a $108 service fee. I had an issue with the dryer. They came out and fixed it, but when I used it afterward, it sounded like it was going to tear apart. So, I called them back. In the meantime, I washed a few small items and put them in the dryer. It sounded really bad at first, but not as bad as before, so I went ahead and dried them. By the time the technician arrived, the noise had stopped.

Afterwards, he came back and said that one part he changed needed to tighten itself up, and it would work itself out. It has, so he left. I still notice the noise occasionally, but the dryer works fine.

The contractor was very good, skilled and knowledgeable. I believed him when he said the part sometimes works itself out because I saw it happen. They’ve been here before for other issues, and they were really good then as well.

American Home Shield sent me a text letting me know who would be coming, their phone number, address, and when they’d contact me. The appliance company then reached out as well.

I can’t believe how much they raise their prices. I wasn’t happy with that, even though I stayed with them for a long time.

A long time ago, my furnace kept going out. They’d send someone to start it, but 10 minutes after they left, it would stop again, and I’d have to call them back. This kept happening. Finally, the technician said my furnace is old. We can start it, but it won’t stay running. As long as we can start it while they’re here, American Home Shield won’t replace it. At the time, I had my 86-year-old mother living with me.

Finally, I had to buy my own furnace because they wouldn’t replace it. But since they kept sending technicians out repeatedly to start it for 10 minutes at a time, they started raising my price a lot.

This time, when I called about needing a new refrigerator and later the dryer, they raised my price significantly again. When I asked, the representative said that they have to make our money back from the parts used to fix it. I asked about all the money I’ve been paying for the warranty all this time.

I called and I cancelled. I talked terribly to the girl. It took almost half an hour to get her to cancel because she kept saying they were going to do this and that. I kept saying I don’t want that. It drove me crazy.

They do good work and send competent people who complete the job in a timely manner. The problem is with the cost, after paying them for a long time, they often hesitate to cover big items. And when they do handle it, they raise your rates so high that you don’t want to stay with them.

I really hesitated to leave American Home Shield because of those issues, but I wasn’t going to pay over $100, actually, it was almost $150, around $140-something that they started charging me after I got the refrigerator.

At that point, I could have saved the $143 a month and bought or fixed appliances myself. I was paying $100 every time a technician came out, plus $143 a month for 12 months, year after year, often without even using it. Then, the one time I actually used the service, they raised my rates again.

My stove top burned out at the beginning of December, so I called American Home Shield on the 3rd to get it repaired. They said Express would come out and contact me within 24 hours, but by December 6th, my birthday, I still hadn’t heard from anyone to schedule the appointment.

I called AHS, and they told me to call Express. I tried, but no one answered. I left a message and never got a call back. My birthday came and went, and still no one showed up. I called again and said I need my stove fixed and I can’t keep buying food, especially with the holidays coming. They said it would be handled, but days kept passing, past the 6th, the 15th, and close to the 20th and I was still waiting for someone to come fix it.

Finally, a second technician came. He said he drove in from far away. He told me the part was broken and had to be reordered, then said to call back once it arrived so they could send someone out again. I called AHS and said that this doesn’t make sense and I put this request in on December 3rd, spoke to multiple people and supervisors who said they’d expedite it.

I’m expecting about 25 people for Christmas. I need to be able to cook. It’s winter, I can’t keep going out to buy food. I even wrote down the whole timeline. AHS said they’d expedite it and that someone would come that weekend, this was three days before Christmas. I called again the next day and still got no response. Then I got an email telling me to call Express. I called again, no answer. When someone finally picked up, they said they’d been very busy.

About two days before Christmas, I called ASH again and asked if they only have one company in all of Ohio to service stoves. I’ve been waiting since December 3rd and still don’t have a stove. I ended up spending $300 on food for my guests. They told me someone would come the day before Christmas, and they confirmed it, but no one showed up. Christmas came and went, and I still didn’t have a stove.

Eventually, someone did come out and fix the stove, though I don’t remember how long after Christmas it was. But the whole experience with AHS and Express Appliance was terrible. I was stressed, asking how I was going to eat, relying on others to bring food, and even spent money catering for 20-plus people for Christmas Eve, which I host every year. It was a horrible experience. Communication was also difficult at times, which made the whole situation even more frustrating.

I told them I needed someone who spoke clear English and asked for a supervisor to call me, but no supervisor ever did. Different people kept calling, saying they were handling the case, but nothing actually got resolved. They kept promising that someone will be here this weekend or tomorrow but no one showed up. I told them I pay too much for this service to have my first claim handled poorly.

This was my first major issue with them, but not the first I’ve heard. I used to tell my daughter I’d never had problems with AHS, but she had. Her furnace or water heater broke, and they never even came out, even after a year. It feels like their service has gotten sloppy. I don’t understand how they still get such high reviews, because people I’ve referred to are having similar issues, paying for the service but not getting the work done.

They charged my credit card on December 3rd, but my stove wasn’t fixed until close to New Year’s. That shouldn’t happen. It feels like the service companies are understaffed and not properly trained, calls aren’t handled well, follow-ups don’t happen, and everything gets backed up. It ends up feeling like I’m waiting in line behind hundreds of customers for a few people to handle everything.

And that feels like greed on American Home Shield’s part too. They have so many customers across states, yet there’s only one company servicing my area. Ohio has a lot of people. The serviceman told me he had to drive all the way from Elyria.

I used the website and also called in. The website kept saying a service call had already been scheduled, and there was no clear way to contact anyone. I had to dig through web searches to find a number to complain about. That was especially frustrating because I’m a senior with a visual impairment. I spent hours on the website trying to find a phone number.

I’ve been with American Home Shield for five years. My most recent claim was for my oven. The technician was great, fixed it quickly. I have a much older stove, and he even told me not to get rid of it because older models are easier to repair and last longer. He was very helpful, and I’m glad he was the one sent out.

I usually contact American Home Shield by phone rather than online, and the customer service has been excellent. If someone is thinking about getting anything insured, I would recommend American Home Shield. I’ve had very good luck with them over the years.

I’ve been with American Home Shield for 20-plus years, and I probably wouldn’t recommend it. I think what’s covered needs to be better explained in the contract because I don’t know what falls under whatever.

Online is easy, and customer service is not too bad. Overall, AHS is expensive. $100 is crazy for just someone to come out and check out what’s going on. Certain things you have to pay extra to get, and they – not the people who come out – need to tell us that ahead of time. That’s where I’m done with it, so I was actually looking at Liberty Home Guard. I’m just waiting for them to fix the heater.

Michael Robert Tyron Wolfe worked on my heating, and they did pretty well. Brian initially thought it was something else when he first came in, but he changed that.

I did the initial claim online, but I gave them a call when the heater didn’t work again. It was actually a valve for the heater, so they had to order the part, which took about a week and a half. Once that came in, Brian came back to change the valve.

Each time, he explained everything, what he found and what he was gonna do, so that was helpful. It’s been working ever since.

I needed to get a new faucet, so I called American Home Shield and they sent someone from Rooter King. He said they could replace it but the one they offer is nickel and not that good, and showed me a better one for $140. I said no, so he told me I could get one from Amazon and they could replace it. He even called his supervisor and confirmed it.

After I bought the faucet on Amazon, he texted me saying I had to pay $200 for installation. I called American Home Shield, and they said I could get my own faucet and they would see what they could do.

Eventually, they offered me a $150 cash in lieu, which took two weeks. I had my handyman install the faucet for $80 because one of their reps told me I could have whoever I wanted to replace it. Later, they said I wasn’t supposed to use a handyman, and that because I didn’t go through Rooter King, they were going to take faucets off my contract.

I sent receipts, pictures and messages showing what I was told, but they didn’t respond. It's frustrating. Most of AHS’ coverage is pretty decent, and the price is fair and pretty competitive. I pay $500 a year and have called a few times since I’ve had it. The first couple of times were great, but this time I felt scammed. We’ll never use this company again.

My contract ends in February, and I’m gonna go to Choice Home Warranty because there I call one specific person and they take care of me the whole time. That’s what I’m looking for, now that I’ve realized what I had to deal with. I would pay a little more, but I think I’ll be getting better service.

It was a dripping faucet in the kitchen. They eventually replaced it, and it’s okay, but part of it is not working like I want it to. The contractors were all right, but they don't seem to be very experienced. They barely did the work and did not seem to know what they were doing as plumbers.

I’ve got an old home, so American Home Shield makes sense for me. It’s a 70-year-old house, and it’s nice to know I have a basic insurance policy on some old appliances I can’t afford to replace. I can just raise a claim and then have someone come out. I don’t have to shop around locally myself to see who’s the best.

The boiler pump was making a terrible sound and shaking my pipes. I had a private company come out and diagnose because when I raised a claim with American Home Shield, it was winter during a cold snap, so I needed heat ASAP. But the guy quoted me $12,000 to replace something.

In the meantime, ARM Mechanicals reached out to me through AHS and said they would take a few days. I powered my house with radiators until they came out, and when they did, they diagnosed the problem and had a spare part, so they fixed it then and there.

The contractor was great. He didn’t try to quote me some outrageous price to get me to buy a new boiler or say that I needed new pipes. The new part he put on is essentially silent, and he said that’s probably more efficient. The house is warmer, so no problem. I had to go to my shed and get a hose pipe for him because he didn’t bring one, and then he just left it where it was, but that’s a small issue.

It was running, so he changed out the whole inside of it. The plumber was very friendly, calm and nice, and he explained everything.

After he fixed it, he told me to test it and waited to make sure that it was working properly. For S.W.A.T., they’re like that. Camden Appliance is really good, too. I’ve had previous companies come out, and they weren’t that great.

For the pending tickets, American Home Shield is following up on parts. Lately, like the last three months or so, I've been getting really great agents.

Once, I had to pay taxes that I've never paid before on a service ticket. All the other tickets I've opened over the years, I've never paid tax on, but the person from AHS explained that it goes to the city or the state. I couldn't move forward without paying that tax to open the ticket, and that never got resolved.

I had a claim not too long ago where American Home Shield sent Mr. Rooter Plumbing out. They came out to stop a leak in one toilet and to reset another one, which they did a good job of. It was diagnosed very quickly, they made the repairs, and they left. So, they were in and out quickly. And I haven’t had any issues with it since.

I always go online when I submit a claim. And I would figure that, like everybody else, they’d create an app, but they haven’t. But it’s still pretty easy to do it online. And their turnaround time has always been the same. Within 24 hours, I got notified of who the assigned contractor was, and then it was a couple of days, and we were fixed.

And I’ve had American Home Shield since we took possession of this house on December 30th, 2020. And we got them because I had a friend who used American Home Shield here in the Houston market, and she always spoke highly of them. And so, I took her advice.

And their customer service has been very good. The couple of times that I’ve had to talk to them was during the summer, a couple of years in a row, when my AC was done, and my wife has issues with breathing, and she’s on oxygen. So, we can’t be stuck without the AC. And they expedited everything and got it taken care of in way less time than they originally had scheduled it for, and with no extra charge.

The only thing is that I’m a consumer, so I’d like to pay less. And when I first got them, I was paying less than $600 a year, and my call-outs were only $75. And then everything’s gone up. So, I always want everything back to where it was. But still, as a Realtor, I always recommend American Home Shield to my real estate clients.

My heat went out back in October, so I called American Home Shield, and they sent Top Notch Home Services out. So, the technician came out, and he went to the unit, and he checked. And then he told me whatever the problem was, and that he’s gonna have to order a part. And then he said he would submit the order for the part.

And I don’t know how much time had passed before he came back with the part and said that it was the wrong part. And then nobody showed back up for two or three weeks. Nobody called. So, I called AHS back, and they told me that part of my heating unit is not covered. So, I got into a long conversation with them about that.

I told them that, in the beginning, when I took out the policy, they said everything was covered. And I told them what they said about the X number of dollars for plumbing and the X number of dollars for leaks in the house. They didn’t say anything about a particular part of my heat or air that would not be covered.

So, I told them that if they didn’t fix it, then I would no longer be a customer of theirs because they’re not telling the truth. And they’ve already sent the technician out twice, and he had placed an order for a part and brought it back to tell me that it was the wrong part. So, how can they tell me now that a part is not covered?

So, they finally sent somebody out here from Top Notch for the third time. And the guy was able to fix it. But I have not heard anything back from American Home Shield to find out whether the unit is working or not, or whether I’m satisfied or not. But the technician fixed it, coming up to either Thanksgiving or Christmas.

And before my heat went out, I only had two issues that I’ve had to call them about. One with a hot water heater and one with either the heating unit or the air conditioning unit, but they were able to fix those right away that same day when they came.

And I’ve been with American Home Shield for a couple of years. And my policy would become renewable on December 18th. And I like the fact that my appliances were being covered if anything went wrong with them, and I wouldn’t have to come out of my pocket with the full amount to try to replace these appliances and other things that are in the contract.

And then there have been other things that went out since I’ve had the coverage, but I just didn’t call AHS. I got two hot water heaters, and both of them went out. But when the second one went out, I did not even call American Home Shield. I just went ahead and had somebody come out here and fix it.

And I lost a refrigerator and a freezer that were out in the garage because the power went off, and when the power came back on, they didn’t come back on. And I didn’t notice it until my food had spoiled. So, I didn’t even call them about that. And I still have not replaced the freezer, but I did replace the refrigerator. So, I just went ahead and did it on my own because I didn’t want them to say that I have too much stuff going on too close together, and then they'll cancel my policy with them.

So, I still think that American Home Shield is a good company with good intentions, but they just didn’t do me right on my heating unit.

Recently, I submitted a claim for my dryer that didn’t heat. And then American Home Shield sent Ada Repair out to fix the issue. And the technician who came was good. He didn’t talk very much, but he came in and did what he needed to do. And it only took him maybe about half an hour. And when he finished, he told me the heater mechanism had gone out, so he had to replace that.

And my dryer is performing good, but I’ve noticed that it doesn’t get as hot as it did before. So, I’ll be reaching back to them today because they said that I have 30 days to do a re-call.

So, I’ve been with American Home Shield since 2003 or 2004. And I got it initially because I am a single female and I have no one here to take care of little stuff. And I had seen them advertised on TV that they would cover different appliances.

But I did have a problem with them because when I was going to cancel before, the girl talked me into it and said she would give me a $100 credit for my next call. And then when I did call, they said that they don’t have it. So, they took the fee out of my checking account, which threw me for a loop. But I went on and paid for it. So, I’m debating now whether or not I’m going to stay with them. Because I’ve been getting a lot of other emails about home warranty. I just haven’t done anything yet.

But American Home Shield is a good company, except that they keep going up on their service fee every couple of years or so. When I first started, it wasn’t even $50. But now, when I call, I have to pay $100. And I told them that I’ve been a member for so long that a $5 raise is okay, but then we’re paying the same as the new people that are signing up with them. And also, when I first started, they covered everything. And then as years went by, if you wanted coverage for your air conditioner, you had to pay extra for that. And that was the only thing that I had concerns about.

The initial issue was with my washing machine, it would stop mid-cycle and not pump out water on certain cycles. The speed wash, which is about 15 minutes, and still works fine.

The technician came and said that for the long cycles, the pump gets hot. He looked at it and said it was warped and that he needed to order a part. The part arrived at my house, but it’s still sitting on my counter. I’m waiting for them to come install it. They showed up one day without calling me, even though they always said they’d text en route. By the time I got the call, they had already left.

I’ve been trying to reach them ever since, but it’s been a phone call since I can’t speak to anyone live, it’s all automated. Then out of nowhere, I get an email saying the work was done. I’ve called American Home Shield twice, and each time there was a computer issue that forced me to call back later. I haven’t had a chance to call back since then.

I use the app to make a service request, and normally I get a series of emails, it works great. That’s true for plumbers or other services, but with Sears, it’s impossible to get ahold of anyone. I’d say AHS has been good. For certain services, it’s excellent, but with some of the companies they’ve partnered with, it hasn’t been a good venture.

To be honest, I like American Home Shield, but when it came to my heating, my needs weren’t always met. My house went without proper heating for too long, which is especially tough with children in the household. They didn’t get back to me promptly or communicate effectively with the people they needed to.

I had to set up a three-way call to get everyone connected so the job could get done. It was a back-and-forth, she kept saying that they should call me. The house needed heat at that point, so I didn’t like all the delays. Without that call, the house probably would have still been without heat.

The prices could be a bit better, honestly. Considering what we went through, I expected some kind of compensation or discount, but none was offered. It took far too long for the heat to be fixed in the home, and it shouldn’t have taken that long.

I’ve had American Home Shield on and off for years, and they’re usually pretty good. There was one time I didn’t agree with them, but other than that, I haven’t had any issues. One contractor really got on my nerves because of his attitude. That was the only time he came out.

I remember making a comment once because I had several things done and said, “Being able to do this and only pay one copay is cool. It helps save me money.” And he replied, “Yeah, but it’s costing me money.” I thought, “Well, then why did you sign up to do this?”

Other than that, I feel like I’ve been treated fairly. There are about 25,000 people in the area where I live, so I don’t know how far some contractors have to come from. But overall, everything’s been okay. I have a pretty good plan. I get what I pay for, and it’s fine.

One night, I called American Home Shield because I wanted to upgrade my plan. I was talking to a representative, and she didn’t fully explain things. She didn’t tell me they were going to bill me the difference between the two plans right away. I didn’t know I had to pay that, period. I thought I was just upgrading.

I knew I would pay for the new plan, but they charged me the difference between the old plan and the new plan on top of that. We went back and forth, and they ended up canceling my coverage. I waited about a month, then called back and got my coverage reinstated.

I do recommend American Home Shield because I believe in having coverage. I live on Social Security, and a $125 deductible is something I can manage. I’ve had my stove replaced, and I’ll probably need my dishwasher replaced too. Paying $125 instead of $600 or $700 or more works for me. That’s why I believe in having a home warranty.

He took the drawer out, looked inside the motor area, and fixed it. I didn’t stand there and ask what he was doing. It’s working fine now.

I’ve had American Home Shield for so long I don’t even remember when I started. It’s easy to use. I submit the claim online, they send it to a contractor, and I get a fast response. I don’t have to find a contractor myself because they take care of it.

The most recent service with them was very good. After I called American Home Shield with our complaint, they responded within a day, saying they’d assigned the issue to a company. That company called within 24 hours, came out quickly, and fixed the problem.

When they came out, they told us what the problem was, and said they didn’t have the parts with them but would get them. Once they had the parts, they came back and fixed it.

The technicians were very nice, and we never had a problem with them. They're very reliable. If I report a problem, they make sure to fix it as soon as possible. The price is okay. I’m not sure what other home warranty companies charge, but for the dependability and service we get, it seems fair and like a good deal.

I’ve been protected with AHS for several years now. My home isn’t new, and we had a lot of appliances that kept needing repairs, so we looked for coverage that would handle all of them.

Recently, my washing machine was leaking. The first company came out but couldn’t figure out the problem. They planned to replace the seal, then came back and said it wasn’t the seal but something else, which they fixed. After three visits and still no solution, I requested a different service from another technician.

They came out, assessed the washing machine, and thought I needed a seal and a tray. They replaced those, but it was still leaking. Recently, they determined the issue is with the water valve shut-off, which is now on order.

Originally, I submitted claims online. But for follow-up visits, I call directly because I don’t want to risk paying the deductible and then having to get reimbursed for a problem that’s still unresolved.

With the latest technician, he's phenomenal, very communicative and clearly determined to fix the problem. I have nothing but good things to say about him. The first guy was nice but came out three times without solving anything, scratching his head, whereas this new guy is focused on getting it done.

I’ve been protected with AHS for years, probably at least five years. In the beginning, it was a bit rocky. One of my first claims was for my washing machine, and it took forever. It was very time-consuming, and the language barrier with the person I was speaking to made it a big hassle.

Recently, The garage was making a really loud, squeaky noise, and the rail seemed to shake abnormally whenever I activated it. I submitted the claim through the online system and included notes describing what was wrong. I usually get a notification right away about who’s coming, and then they reach out to schedule the appointment. When the contractor came out, he basically greased the rail and sprayed the hinges.

They basically said that part isn’t covered, but the technician was doing a nice thing by greasing the rail. They mentioned it could take a few weeks for the grease to settle and reduce the squeaking, but it really hasn’t improved.

Other things have been much easier, so it really depends on the job. My first experience wasn’t good, but routine issues like plumbing, toilets, or AC have generally been handled well. Overall, it’s been good, though there have been some problems.

I had a plumbing issue and American Home Shield sent the technician I requested, it was resolved, and It took 48 hours. The contractor is excellent. They sent him to me a long time ago, and every time they send another technician from a different company, it doesn’t work out. So now, whenever I call, I specifically request him.

American Home Shield doesn’t always make it easy, and it’s always a battle. They say only three options can pop up and they can’t look further. I tell them I don’t approve of any of these and it turns into a back-and-forth. I often have to hang up and call back before I finally get someone willing to take the time to input the right ones.

One thing that really irritates me is the service calls. Every time I call, it’s clear I’m talking to a live person, but they’re clearly reading from a script. It’s obvious, especially in the middle of an urgent issue, like a plumbing problem with water everywhere, having to sit through their long script.

I understand it a bit, though, since it seems like the people I talk to might be from different countries, they often have accents and seem to be from various places. I can usually understand them, but the script they have to read is very long. It’s not their fault, they’re trained that way.

I’ve noticed that I pay my $125 service fee, the technician comes, and they use a used part. It’s not fully fixed, and then it breaks down, so they have to come back. What happened to me recently is that 32 days later, I had to pay another $125 because the repair failed.

I would still recommend them. I own a lot of rental properties and have many policies with American Home Shield, so I promote them and it’s great to have.

American Home Shield is good. It’s a company that I can count on to warranty or fix my appliances or whatever they cover. We have a swimming pool, though, and they don’t cover the lights and stuff in there.

Some of the companies they send out are not great. Sometimes we have to escalate things, but they always find a way to make it right.

The biggest and only complaint we have is the price. It has doubled since we first started with them five years ago. We understand that there’s been inflation, but that is something they can improve on or communicate better about.

Right now, I wouldn't recommend American Home Shield to anyone, not at this point.

The light in the kitchen went out in October, and it didn’t get fixed until the very end of December. We had a lot of trouble getting AHS to do what needed to be done. It was just a lot of back and forth with that particular claim. When the contractor finally did come out, we had to pay him $250 and bring him to the store to buy a light fixture. Altogether, we spent a little over $400, so we don’t see the purpose of keeping the service anymore.

They came out and did the same job in January 2023 on our back porch, and the individual who came out did not charge us anything extra. We had to pay for a new light fixture as well. American Home Shield was supposed to provide a ceiling fan, but we never received it.

In 2024, when we had to have our refrigerator ice maker fixed, the guy had the parts and did an excellent job, so that went well. But when you have more than one negative situation, it kind of drowns out that one good situation. We've been paying all these years and we pay on time, so I don't understand.

The customer service reps were of no assistance and did not show concern. The last person I spoke with wanted to be very helpful and seemed to be very concerned, but everyone before her wasn’t.

I called to submit a claim for my oven, which wasn’t heating properly. The technician who came was polite but didn’t even turn on the appliance. He looked at my oven, ordered some parts and put them in when they came, but it didn’t work. I had to call back two more times, and he ordered other parts and installed them, but it still didn’t work.

He told me he would report to AHS, and the next thing I know, American Home Shield is telling me that he says there’s nothing wrong with it. That individual came out here initially for three appliances, and he didn’t turn any of them on.

The dishwasher was replaced because he said there was no serial number on it, so there’s no way to order parts for it. The number is readable, though. It was just disconnected on one little edge. A friend who took home that old one was able to repair it with a $12 part.

Calling to submit a claim is very frustrating because they have their offices in the Philippines, and I get people who cannot speak English. They understand what I say, but they have an accent. It used to be Costa Rica, which wasn’t so bad.

And the price keeps going up, but everything's going up, so it's all relative.

When our sink was leaking through the garbage disposal, I submitted a claim online. It’s very easy, a lot easier than sitting on hold forever. It's one of the most user-friendly websites I've encountered.

I received an email saying I have to pay my deductible, which they take out of my bank account. It was my washing machine. I don’t know which company came out, but whoever it was, everything went well. My experience with American Home Shield hasn’t always been good, though. Some of the providers they send out aren’t honest, and some don’t do the job right. Then we’re left with something still not fixed.

We don’t get support when the technicians don't evaluate it correctly. Someone else has to come out, re‑evaluate it, and I end up paying out of pocket. Some of them just don’t care. One technician never got my heater working at all. I looked them up afterward, and they weren’t even certified. I reported that to American Home Shield, but I don’t know what came of it.

It took about two months to get my heater working through the home warranty. During that time, I had problems with the people they sent out, and they accused me of being rude. One heating and air company told me that if they couldn’t come when they needed to, they wouldn’t worry about putting me on the schedule. I told them they have to work around my schedule and not the other way around.

The whole situation was awful. This happened over a year ago, but that was my issue with American Home Shield. It felt like they were supporting the vendors instead of supporting me. Eventually, they sent someone else out, and we got it resolved.

American Home Shield provides good service, and I don’t have a problem with them overall. I’m still with the warranty. If I didn’t think they were good, I would leave. I have the highest plan they offer, or something like that.

My issue is with the vendors. I feel like some of the companies they send are racist. Some of the technicians show no concern and talk to you in a cold way. I know of a good plumbing company, but I don’t think American Home Shield uses them. They should have better‑quality companies on their list.

They keep using the same companies, and I feel like if we know a good company, we should be able to recommend who comes out to our house. I tried to recommend a company, and they told me, “We don’t know who’s coming out. We just put it in.” And I said, “But I might not want that company to come out here till you put it in.”

    Reviewed Jan. 17, 2025

My recent claim with American Home Shield was back in the middle of October, and it was a nightmare. We have a unique washing machine. It's got a top load and a front load. Something was wrong with the mechanism that locked the top load so it was preventing the washing machine from operating correctly. We have the AHS policy and thought it'd be a simple fix. We paid the deductible and had somebody come out to troubleshoot it.

AHS operates with local vendors and that vendor happened to be A&E Repair, the affiliate of Sears. Their technician came out, troubleshot for about 20 minutes, ordered some parts, and was done. The next week, where all the problems really started, a second technician came out and did majority of the damage. The front load portion of the machine was working, but when he left, it was leaking and nothing was working. He damaged the machine. He ordered some parts, and that volleyed for a multitude of missed visits on the part of A&E, and multiple calls to both companies attempting to mitigate this.

This guy even admitted to me, “They tell us to come out, but my forte is refrigeration. I don't know anything about washing machines." He started taking it apart and it became obvious that he knew nothing about washing machines. I say, "Why don't you go to YouTube? I saw some stuff on here." Two other technicians came out saying this wasn't a very difficult thing to repair if you knew what you were doing." One of them says, "You could have just done this," and I was like, "How do we go from here to here?"

The majority of my gripe goes to A&E. There were several missed appointments, which were really frustrating. I'd get on the phone with AHS and was like, "What are you guys gonna do? I was home all day, took time off from work." This other company just no-showed, but what they would do is they would send text messages saying, "This guy's delayed. He's gonna be here at 11 o'clock," and then another text saying 2 o’clock, and another saying 5 o’clock. They’ll be like, “You authorized us to reschedule the appointment," but I didn't do anything. It's also not like you got an appointment date the next day. It would be three weeks to reschedule. It was December 31st that the reps finally showed up from A&E, but I couldn't wait any longer. I needed to go buy another washing machine on my own accord, which I didn't think was right.

My gripe with American Home is that they have a third party that's in another country that has a preset dialogue that they're supposed to say to you. I don't like people who say they're sorry insincerely, but knew nothing about the incident. I kept telling them, "This company is unconscionable. I don't know what the rationale is but they're not coming out to fix the problem." They're like, "We already got them involved so we can't switch vendors." I can't believe this thing went for as long as it did without getting mitigated.

I ended up calling two independent repair parties to come out and troubleshoot it. The third guy that came out said, "It looks like one of these guys ruined your internal drum. That's unrepairable unless you ship it back to the company because it has to be calibrated." That ended up getting me some traction with AHS. I said, “Even if you send somebody out here to do this or that, we're gonna need a new machine.” I have a decent-sized family and going without a washing machine for even a week is a calamity. Thank God we have in-laws who were a block away, so they helped. But I'm taking their energy, their water, and their use of their machine. It was a hardship, but AHS is really hardheaded. They have a protocol that they follow and they won't deviate from it.

AHS helped prolong the agony. They said A&E has to come out here, assess it, and conclude what is going on." But we're not getting anywhere. At one point, finally, I complained so bad they finally put on a manager who said, "I'll give you the initial fee that you put down for the service visit.“ I was like, ”Thank you, but it's minor. I really want the situation mitigated." I’m really upset that they ultimately dragged their feet.

I'm equally as ticked off at AHS as I am with A&E, who were incompetent. They did damage and I'm still trying to mitigate that. If somebody comes on your property and damages something, they should be liable in some capacity. After writing letters to corporate and threatening to sue them, AHS finally came back and said, "We'll give you the replacement cost of your machine," which ended up being $400 less than the one that we ended up replacing it with. That upset me, but at this point, I just got what I could get. I needed to be really proactive instead of them being reactive.

I must have had 20 calls to AHS and equally as many to A&E, but everyone just gave me the song and dance. I want my washing machine fixed and it was frustrating me from that standpoint. I went to the attorney general. I wrote letters and I said I'll go to court. I ended up putting in the paperwork and AHS finally sent something as an apology. They said I have three options, but we've already purchased a washing machine. They had something they call cash in lieu of.

I filled out a couple of things online and I trust them that they sent the payment. I ended up being shy of 1,800 bucks redeposited to circumvent the cost that I had put out for the new machine. I also had an issue with the refrigerator the same way and AHS eventually did come through. They will if they're given the proper documentation. They will make good on replacing it, but it's really convoluted to get from A to Z with them.

My brother and my sister recommended American Home Shield. They told me that AHS was good and they had good experiences with them. If something went wrong with their appliances and AHS couldn't repair it, they would replace it, but that wasn't the experience with me. Back in August, I filed the initial claims on my Amana side-by-side refrigerator freezer. American Home Shield said they sent the contract to Westinghouse, who then sent the contract to Sloan Appliances. It took two weeks for the guy from Sloan to come out. He came and said I needed a compressor. He took that compressor out and came back a week later with another one. He put it in, but I called him back a few days later and told him that the freezer was still was not freezing or getting cold.

He came and said that the compressor was bad. I said, "Is the next step to call AHS and tell them that you can't repair it?" He said, “I can't say I can't repair it. I'm gonna order you another compressor." I said okay, but I went without a compressor all the way up until the end of November. JD Appliance Repair Services finally sent a guy to come out and fix it. They put three compressors in my Amana freezer. They also claimed that compressors can sit on the shelf and go bad.

I’ve been with American Home Shield for over 10 years, but after all these years, I was really treated unfairly. I have cancer and stage 3 chronic kidney disease, and I had to go out or send somebody out to get me food every day. I had nowhere to keep it and that was a very bad experience for me. It was an inconvenience. A lady called back and she said that they would refund my $125 deductible. I got that and then she said that I would not be charged for my January payment, but I still was.

    Reviewed Jan. 17, 2025

I’ve had American Home Shield on and off for many years. I’d say they’re probably the best of the worst, which isn’t saying much. I have a contract with them to cover major appliances and my air conditioning units, which are 10 to 20 years old because my home itself is 20 years old.

My most recent service request with American Home Shield is very aggravating. I had a problem with my ice maker. The repair person they sent didn’t notify American Home Shield on time or submit the necessary paperwork. I was waiting for their response, but they kept asking me why I hadn’t had the repairperson come out. When the repair person had already been to my home. I kept telling them to take action to complete the repair.

I had to write a complaint to the president of American Home Shield asking about my service request that wasn’t being handled. They responded that they never heard back from the repair person. Apparently, he was out sick and didn’t communicate the necessary repairs, so nothing was being done.

I was waiting for American Home Shield to handle the service request, but nothing happened. I ended up getting the president’s number on LinkedIn and contacted him. He escalated it to his executive team, which only led to more delays. I went back and forth with the assigned person through about eight or ten follow-up emails.

It turned out they couldn’t find all the parts needed for the repair. They kept delaying, saying they were searching for one part. They found some, but one part was missing. I kept following up, insisting they take action, and it took several days to sort out.

Finally, they admitted the part couldn’t be found and said they would replace my entire refrigerator-freezer. But the models they offered either didn’t fit the space or were much smaller than my original. They’re supposed to provide a similar size, but none of the options worked.

The replacement had to fit between fixed cabinet openings, but the models they offered didn’t. I kept saying that the contract says they must provide a similar size and model, but they argued otherwise. It turned into a huge hassle.

After arguing with them, they offered me a cash settlement since we couldn’t agree on an approved unit that would fit. The amount they offered wasn’t enough to replace my original refrigerator.

It’s a long story, but that was my experience. I had at least a dozen messages back and forth with the president or the executive administrator he escalated it to. Once she handled it, it had to go to another department for replacement approval. After all this, my contract came up for renewal, and I initially canceled it. I later renewed it, not because I like the company. I don’t because I feel I need some protection against big repair bills.

I don’t think any of these companies are very good. They offer more coverage on certain items, like air conditioning, but it’s also much more expensive than others. I’m keeping it for the coverage, not because I like the company. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth. I’ve been in the insurance business since 1986, and I’m the type who’s willing to fight when needed and I know how to fight. Most of the time, I get things covered because I understand contracts well, but it’s definitely not fun. I'm honest, what I see is what I can get. I don’t pull punches. I wish my experience had been better.

The issue was with my icemaker in my refrigerator. He was able to get it taken care of, but the part had to be reordered, so he had to come out a second time.
In another situation with my washer or dryer, they had to come out a couple of times, and it was inconvenient. Sometimes it seems like it takes too long for them to respond or to get a technician out. With my washer, it took almost three or four days, and with my refrigerator, at least two days before they sent someone out.

My biggest thing is they’re quick to take the funds. As soon as you make a claim, they take the deductible right away, but then you still have to wait a few days for a technician, and sometimes longer if parts need to be ordered. It’s just inconvenient. They need to really take that consideration to show more of a workmanship with the customer.

I'm happy with the coverage. I'm probably paying top dollar for American Home Shield, vice, other home warranty services. But in the big picture, it’s worth it since we haven't really had any balking on the part of the company or its contractors at all in recent years. Recently, NC Plumbing Pro came out and that was good. He did what we wanted, so we're perfectly happy with that. He was flexible and did a better job of figuring out what the problem was than we did. He got the job done without any kind of stress or complication and it’s back to normal.

We're in our second year with American Home Shield. We signed up for peace of mind because we were not the first owners of the house and we do not know the condition of everything in the home. It's worked out very well.

Our furnace stopped working and we had no heat. I filed the claim using the app on my phone and it was very easy. I was able to know the name of the company and had a contact phone number. I was thoroughly pleased with the contractors. They were very professional, friendly and competent, nothing but positive things to say. The technician showed that they were testing the different parts of the system along the way to isolate the problem. And then once the problem was found, they said that they would get the part ordered and replaced. And they did. And everything's been working great since. I am thoroughly satisfied.

The furnace repair came close to covering our outlay for the warranty. We also had another claim and ended up with a new water heater. So, we're way ahead financially. In our experience, having AHS has been well worth the value to have the peace of mind knowing that if there's a major issue, you have that coverage and you won't have a big unexpected cost.

Terrible company! No service! Over 7 weeks to get a water heater replaced and still not done. Customer service is useless. Numerous calls to them where they apologize and promise to fix the problem but then do nothing. Service contractors do not want to deal with them. The coverage is worthless when there are no contractors that will work with them.

We're in the fourth month for our claim. It's taking forever to get a dishwasher that went out. And as soon as it gets in and they're supposed to send me $631, which I have not received yet. You deal with people in another country. American Home Shield doesn’t even have an office here in Memphis, Tennessee and l know because I live right across the street from it.

I got a notice that they were gonna put it this Friday. It's been four months for a replacement dishwasher. And if I hadn't been paying them about almost $1,200 a year, I'd have already canceled them and walked down there and bought a dishwasher and had it put in. But my wife wouldn't let me do that. I would not recommend them to anyone. I'm going to cancel my relationship with American Home Shield. I've been with them for 19 years. And this is the last one.

It was four weeks down the road before they could get here and then on the day of, they cancelled at the last minute and rescheduled for a couple days later. Never called, never showed up, rescheduled it for another three weeks from then, never showed up for that either. I called American Home Shield, they found Anything Appliance, which was very good, very responsive, and I was happy with their service. The tech who came out was respectful, listened to what I said, and did what he was supposed to do. They had to order parts, and they kept me up to date on when the parts were there. I also had a plumber come out to repair my showerhead, he came right away and I had good experience with that one.
