We filed 2 or 3 claims and one was the air conditioner and American Home Shield hired really bad contractors every time. We had to have the AC repaired every year because they could never get it right. That was not something we were very happy with. We never had a problem submitting a claim, other than they changed what they covered a couple of times. Most of the contractors were really good. And they did listen to us when we told them that we did not want a particular contractor back. So, they did a pretty good job of that. Other than the air conditioner, they fixed everything right. But they never got the air conditioner right so we switched our service to someone else.
Hi Brandon, we are very appreciative of this feedback and will work to improve the list of qualified contractors in your area. Most of the contractors will report what the failure is, so that we can make the best repair or replacement decision. We wish that we could have resolved your service issue with your air conditioner to prevent your cancellation. This feedback will be considered to help us improve our home warranty services as a whole.

My experience with American Home Shield has been nothing but excellent. If I needed to report or file a claim, it might be 11 o’clock at night that I’ve had to report, I can get online and do it and then they call me the next day. All the girls that I've ever talked to are nothing but sweet, understanding and very, very courteous. The only thing that I ever had a problem with was that my ice maker went out twice and the first time they sent out Sears and the man was not very friendly. He looked at it, ordered the part, came back, was still not very friendly.
He was here maybe ten minutes then left, and within two weeks or three weeks, it was out again. So another company came and the service guy, Mike, pulled everything out and showed me everything was burnt up. Come to find out the Sears guy did not replace it with the parts that he ordered. He didn’t do the right thing that he was supposed to be doing. All the components in there were burnt and it's a wonder I didn't have a fire, but that wasn’t American Shield’s fault...
The other thing I’ve had to have AHS out for is my dishwasher. The dishwasher just gone out. I don’t know how old it is. It was here when I bought the house. I called American Home Shield and told them Mike was gonna be here. I said, "Can I turn in that order now? Because he’s gonna be here." They said sure. So Mike fixed it and I’m in good shape now.
Cookie, Your feedback is valuable to us. We will work with our SEARS contractor to improve its services. We apologize for that experience. However, we are delighted to hear that a different contractor was able to come out and resolve your appliance issues. Thank you for being a customer of ours!

The most recent claim was not really a claim, but it’s been fixed fine. However we had one issue a year ago and it took five times for them to come out, and we kept getting charged. And they say the electrician would come out so they have to charge us again. It was a big hassle but it all got straightened out. Everything has always been good except that one episode.

I went online and submitted a claim with American Home Shield and they got back with me. It was an easy process. I was here when they came and they were very knowledgeable, took their shoes off, did the work, and showed me what was wrong. Performance since the repair is perfect, not any problems at all. It was a good experience for me. I would recommend AHS.
Hi Roderick-- thank you for your recommendations! Glad to hear that you experienced good service!

Overall my experience with American Home Shield has been positive. I had to turn in two service requests pretty much right together. I had an issue with my hot water heater and then I had a water leak in where the hot water heater was. Those were very easily taken care of and very quick, and had no issues so I was very pleased with that.

I came home from work and there was water coming out of the ceiling. We built it but my house is 16 years old and it was the original water heater. I found out how to turn the water off and then I called American Home Shield. They have been absolutely fabulous. But I'm not happy with the plumber that had been here. I called to let AHS know that they probably don't want to use that plumbing company anymore. The guy who came out had no intention of working at all. After he could sit at my dining room table and the air conditioning to do his paperwork... he then told me that he wasn't gonna do it that day. I was very upset and my son, whose girlfriend had just come in from out of town, and they had no hot water the whole time they were here. This happened on a Wednesday evening, and we went until Saturday without hot water. I was very disappointed with the plumbing company.
I've made two other claims since I've had American Home Shield. I made one that was for my microwave and garbage disposal. Both of those gentlemen who came here were amazing. They were wonderful, and those things are still working. American Home Shield has been amazing. As a matter fact I have put off getting it for several years because it sounded too good to be true; I have always been told if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But my brother and some other friends of mine had it and had a wonderful experience with them. And I finally got it and so far I like their service too. They are well worth the money.
Hi Lisa, your feedback on your service calls is appreciated. The plumbing contractor that you mentioned will be evaluated due to the behavior he exhibited on your request. We do not want other customers having the same experience with them. However, we are delighted to know that your garbage disposal and microwave requests went smooth!

AHS has the worst customer service of any company I have ever dealt with. Every time you speak with an AHS representative, we get told a different story. The last representative we spoke with on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 actually said we should not complain about not hot having water for 2 days, because he had to go 3 weeks without hot water. It is impossible to speak to anyone who knows the policies and can actually help the paying customers. Our Water Heater went out on Sunday, October 5th, 2014.
I called AHS Monday morning and had a company from Palmdale CA "The Plumber" come out that afternoon. The "plumber" showed up and said yes we definitely need a new water heater. He then let me know that I would need almost $400.00 of updated modifications that were not covered and the stand the water heater sits on will have to be replaced because of the water, drywall and mold issues (The water heater had been leaking slowly for approximately 10 hours - there was not drywall or mold issues). The "plumber" said he has a buddy/contractor TCC construction that could come out right away and fix the water heater stand and we could have hot water within 24 hours. This is a 2 x 2 platform - probably a $50.00 job.
The plumbers buddy TCC construction said (for an unseen condition) he can come out for $750.00 - I almost passed out and actually said "are you kidding". TCC construction let me know I was paying for the convenience fee of getting it done so quickly. I asked "The Plumber" to take away the 75 gallon broken water heater so I could hire my own person to fix the water heater stand. He refused to remove the water heater and said that TCC could remove the broken water heater or I could have my husband remove it. "The Plumber" tried to collect 2 service fees ($150.00) because he said we would have to pay next time he comes out because he could not fix it himself on Monday, October 6, 2014.
I immediately called AHS to let them know about the scam that one of their "Plumbers" tried to pull over on us. I of course spoke to a call center representative that refused to let me speak to a supervisor (but don't worry, she did say she understood how upset I was - why do these people think I care one way or another if they understand - it is so patronizing !!!). She would have someone call me - NO CALL CAME!! My husband called back and spoke to an AHS representative in the authorization department. She was awesome, apologized up and down, said that never should have happened, told my husband the quote/bid was compromised because "The Plumber" tried to force/financial coerce us. The AHS representative said that "The Plumber" bid/quote would be thrown out because it was compromised - all repairs HAVE TO GO THROUGH AHS. She said that we would not have to pay another service fee.
My husband called AHS on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 and spoke to Leroy (a complete jerk). He then said the person I spoke with on Monday was wrong - and he is going to reverse everything the helpful representative had done for us - take the new quote out of the system. The representative Leroy said it’s too bad if we don't like what he is saying and our choice is to let the scammer from Lancaster "The Plumber" come back and do the work or they would give us 1/3 of the price it will cost to replace the water heater. We actually pay for this rude service - DO NOT EVER USE AHS. They have the rudest employees ever dealt with. You cannot talk with any person who has real authority. They do not care if their "plumber" tried to rip us off. There is NO consistency and policy changes with every person we spoke to. P.S. - still no hot water and no resolution from AHS the company we pay for warranty repair.
Hi Mona, a case manager is available to contact you in regards to your service work order for your water heater. Is it okay to have someone call?

When the problem started, my son was gonna take a shower when I noticed my ceiling was leaking. So I called American Home Shield (about two months later because I forgot I actually had it lol). When I called, I thought maybe I would have had to explain what was going on, and I didn’t. It was just awesome. The contractor was very courteous. When he came in, he removed his shoes. I have hardwood floors so I told him there was no need but he wanted to do it anyway. I told him where it was at. He was like “No problem - I'll take care of it.” And I thought maybe he wanted me to stay up there with him. He was just like “Ma'am, it’s up to you. I just want you to be comfortable.” I honestly didn't expect that he wanted me to be comfortable in my own home.
Have had no issues at all since the repair was completed. It was awesome. I love AHS. It’s a must-have for your household. I've been sharing my experience with everybody and I've been telling everybody they need to get it.

Submitting a claim to American Home Shield was excellent. We had an AC problem. Communicating with their reps was also excellent. We turned in the claim on Friday. The contractor called back within an hour and they scheduled an appointment for Monday. It now works okay. It was repaired properly. We've found the service to be excellent. We also had an issue about six weeks ago but with our ice box. They repaired it twice. It didn't work and the third time they replaced the ice box, so our service with them has been excellent. We've been customers for years. We recommended many customers to them.

10/16 - Received replacement refrigerator. American Home Shield allowed me to upgrade (pay additional cost) when ordering replacement refrigerator, and their representative appologized for the delays in service. I am assured by both the company and friends and family members, that the delays that I experienced are not typical of service provided by American Home Shield. While the experience was long & with frustration, I must say that in the end, I am satisfied with the results. The Case Manager assigned to my case was very nice.

Requested refrigerator repair on September 05. 3 contractors assigned before 1 showed up on September 11 & needed part for repair. He returned on September 29 & could not repair refrigerator. No one from AHS contacted me to see if repair completed. Many calls later, another contractor showed up, spliced a wire and claimed repair completed. 3 hours later, I offer my grandson an ice cream sandwich, only to find them melting in the refrigerator freezer and the freezer not responding when I attempted to set temperature in freezer! Called AHS again and got the impression that I want things done too rapidly. Seems my only reasonable solution is to purchase another refrigerator, if I want one that works correctly!
Hi Juanita, I would like to have a case manager contact you to assist in resolving the ongoing issue with your refrigerator.

American Home Shield were supposed to come out last Friday and no one ever came. It wasn't an emergency so I called and left a message but they never came. Prior to this though, everything had been fine with them. My toilet was not flushing properly and they had come out once before and repaired whatever was on the inside that needed to be done. And then I noticed that it's doing it again so I wanted someone to come out while I was still within that window of repairs. With the exception of this last when they didn't show up, everything has been fine. I had a wonderful experience. American Home Shield was great and interacting with their sales representatives was always positive. I usually do everything online and they get back to me very promptly. They're very efficient. I have rarely had a problem with AHS; from the time that I make the request (I always used the online portal) to the usually immediate response from a contractor, to the completion of the issue, I have been pleased. I have had a water heater replaced, maintenance done on my AC, my ceiling fan repaired, and various other issues that arise when owning a home. Their customer service reps work with you if you need to make a change in appointment or even a contractor, and their deductibles/out-of-pocket costs over the last fifteen years have only arisen nominally.

The dishwasher broke in May. This is October. Since May, AHS has sent 5 different vendors to try and fix it. It has never been fixed and since May I have been washing dishes by hand, eating off of paper plates or eating out. AHS finally said they would replace it, but guess what? My dishwasher is STAINLESS. AHS considers stainless a color and will only replace with black or white. They are only willing to give me 2/3's the cost of replacing my dishwasher, which was new last October. There is much more to this story, but suffice to say that I will NEVER have an AHS policy ever again.

On September 26, 2014 I called AHS to report a problem with my washing machine. The washer, in the spin cycle, was making a horrible loud screeching sound. After I made 3 calls a repair company finally responded and sent out a "repairman" on September 30, 2014. The repairman was rude from the start, and did not communicate well until the end when he said that this was too big of a job for him and he would report the problem to his supervisor and I would hear back from the insurance company. Several days passed and I received no call.
Upon contacting AHS on October 3, 2014, I was informed that the problem was not covered because my washer could still operate. I expressed my surprise to the service person, who said that it is in my contract that the washer would not be covered since it is only making a noise. I explained that the noise was extremely loud and that it is obvious that the bearings are not working properly and it should be repaired. She said that I was not covered. I asked about two other claims that I have submitted. One for my clothes dryer and one for my oven. She acknowledged the claims but said unless they did not operate, I would probably not be covered but she would check and call me back. As of today, October 7, 2014, I have not received a returned call.
I have re-read my policy and it clearly states that I am covered for "malfunctions" of equipment. The definition of malfunction is that it is not functioning properly. The dictionary says that malfunction is when something fails to function normally or satisfactory. A noise so loud that you can hear it from across the street from my house I would think qualifies as a malfunction. My policy also states that "when turned on the item should operate without causing damage, irregular sounds, smoke, or other abnormal outcomes."
I am going to call today and try to reach a manager at AHS. I decided to read reviews of AHS to see what others have experienced, which if I had done this before, I would never taken out the policy. I dread calling based on other's reviews, but will do so and keep you informed. How could a company who gets so many bad reviews get a 4 or a 5 star rating, depending which AHS ad that you read. I am surprised that they are still in business.
Hello Tony, I can have a case manager research your service work orders on your washer, clothes dryer and oven, The case manager can contact you afterwards to assist in finding a resolution.

When I filed a claim it took a while for the service guy to show up because he was busy with some other jobs. But finally, they came and the problem was solved. There was no problem submitting the claim. The only thing is getting in contact with somebody from American Home Shield which is very difficult. It's not a consumer friendly number. You have to constantly wait and listen to all kinds of messages and music. And after about 15 or 20 minutes if you're lucky, you'll get somebody on the line. My husband called for service on Monday 09/29/14 due to freezer issues. The service tech came out and said parts needed to be ordered and they'd be in on Thursday 10/02/14. We followed up on Friday 10/03/14 and again on Monday 10/06/14. We had to keep following up because American Home Shield did not follow up with us or call us back when they said they would. Because the parts were never ordered until one week later, Monday (10/06/14), all of our food went bad. We have 3 boys. Eating out every night is not an option. Over $300 worth of food was thrown away.
When I contacted AHS on 10/07/14, they told me the part would be in on 10/13/14 - two weeks after our initial call on 09/29/14. You'd think that with the amount of money paid each month and the fact we've been a customer for well over 10 years, they'd put some sense of urgency on their mistake of failing to order the part after the tech came out on 09/29/14. We are very disappointed. Our customer service person "Rachel" told me a supervisor or manager was not available for me to speak with. I requested from her to email me the information on the part ordered so we could just order the part ourselves and have it overnighted. She refused and told me she had no way of emailing me the information because they are not allowed personal emails. Well, the way I see it- this is business and not personal. I will do my research to find another home warranty company as AHS has absolutely no sense of urgency when it comes to their own mistakes.

The most recent claim I made with American Home Shield was one that we actually had someone come out and work on today. We hadn't had any previous problems; it was just something that started happening over the last week or so. We went online to file the claim. My interactions with the contractor overall was pretty positive. But what we do normally find is when the contractors come out, there are often things that aren't covered that we get charged for, which is again the case today. We are kind of leery about that now that usually what they find they say they don’t cover, and so we still have to pay $75 but then also whatever their fee is on top of that. At that point, we'll start weighing whether or not the home warranty insurance is actually working. Overall, American Home Shield is user-friendly, but I'm less confident with the contractors.
Hi Julie-- The most recent service requests that were placed are showing to have authorized covered repairs. We would like to look into your concerns and be sure that we are being provided reports on all failures from the contractors, as we do not show anything deemed not covered. If a technician is charging customers for more than the service fee, we are supposed to be advised by the technician before the customer is charged. If you would like assistance please reply back. Thank you.

I would like to thank the customer service dept. at American Home Shield for taking care of my AC issue. The 1st AC company did not see/notice/realize that one of the lines had a leak. Their tech filled the unit with Freon (temporary fix/band-aid). The 2nd company, TexAire, had to be sent out and correct the problem 2 months later once all of the Freon had leaked out.
Thanks for waiving the deductibles and reimbursing me for other idiots' mistakes. I did advise AHS to not ever send American Air Conditioning & Heating Co. to my home here in San Antonio. So beware people.

My AC went out back on July 2nd. I had to pay my service charge of $125 plus $250 total per every pound over of freon because the AHS only covers $10 for older running units. The contractor they sent out charged like $79 per lb of freon. It's October now and my AC is struggling to cool up to 78....I advised AHS THERE IS A LEAK, but of course they wanted to take the easiest, cheapest route to repair my AC. The evaporator line is not cool, again. Really not sure if they are sending experienced contractors.

These are the worst people to deal with their lack of customer service is incredible. I purchased my home October 31 2013. The seller a consumer paid $435 for my home warranty. In November of 2013 I made a service call because the heater would not come on. The tech came out and finally got it working, he said that I needed a thermostat. He told me to buy one and call and they would put it in. The contractors name was Air Pro. The air conditioning would not come on with thermostat again so I had already bought a thermostat and called back a different contractor was called.
The gentlemen had problems with installing the thermostat I bought even though the manufacturer (Honeywell) said it would work. When I told him that I was not paying him since he did not complete the work he undid all of the work he had done and stormed off and said someone would call me from his office. No call from the contractor or American Home Shield. I called American Home Shield and they said they would send out another contractor and there would be no service fee. They did, he came and fixed the problem then tried to solicit me to spend another $399 for another thermostat. I said no. I proceeded to look up both contractors on the internet, both had unfavorable ratings from customers outnumbering the favorables by 5 to 1.
For three months American Home Shield pestered me about the $75 they said I owed them for the service call, everyone telling me they were going to remove it.. Finally it was resolved not before they threatened to cancel my service. These are the only two service calls I made to American Home Shield. They then started sending me renewal notices. I called on September 24th @ 1:39 pm, spoke to Sales and asked why the premium was $510 not $435. They said it was because I was a renewal and that was there policy and since they invented the industry they had a right to do what they wanted. I told them about the inferior contractors and they told me, "well we are sorry." I asked him why the $75 Trade service fee was so high he had no comment except to tell me they were the best. I then said thank you because he began to rant about the other companies and was not helping.
I called on September 24th @ 1:49pm and asked to speak to a Sales Supervisor about the call, I was put on a hold and told that they would get me one after 5 minutes. He said that none were available and one would get back within 24 hours. No one got back. On September 29 I wrote an email about the problem and received no response. I received another renewal request and called back today October 6. I asked the rep to look at the record to see if my calls were noted, she said they were. I further asked about why I had not received a call from the Supervisor, she said they worked on a different system than they did. She further advised that no reason was put in there to call me back. Needless to say this company raises their prices for returning customers. They send out substandard contractors and have no customer service. Take my advice and do not deal with them.
Hi John, I apologize for your experience with the vendor and would like an opportunity to assist you if you're still in need of help.

I told them we were at 100 degree weather that it was unacceptable. They said that their rules state is had to be 105 F for them to expedite the parts. I asked the source of that statement, they say that it was at their discretion. They asked me if I wanted to cash out and find a repair company that would do it sooner, and I said depending on what they would be offering. They told me that they would order the part and that the cash out dept would call me to give me an offer in 2 days. They stated that if I cashed out I would be responsible for the shipping of the part back to the warehouse. I said OK. I asked them several times that if getting an offer would stop the part ordering process and they said no.
10/1 5am - I get an email saying they hadn't heard from me about the cash out, whether I wanted the unit fixed or the money. 10/1 8am - I called AHS and told them to fix the AC since they were only offering 600 dollars and the local company said it would cost me $1500... I told them that I was told the repair process would continue independently from getting a cash out offer and they said NO, that it was one thing of the other. That they would order the part and ETA. 10/6/2010 - I get an email confirmation about the part being shipped. 10/6/2010 - I called AHS and after talking to two reps, I was told the ETA for the part was 10/10/2010. The first rep was a man, very rude, kept stating contradicting information about my claim, and said there was nothing they could do for me. I hung up and redialed.
The second rep stated that because I had wanted a cash out, the ordered was canceled and the compressor was returned by the AC repair company. I told them that on 10/1 I had specifically said no cash out, and then the compressor was ordered after I said no to the cash out. They said that the repair company had not received the message from AHS to continue with the repair (although I spoke to the repair company about the $350 in freon gas I would be responsible for on 10/2). I was told there was nothing they could do to expedite my request, and the rude rep offered 100 dollars for fans and the other offered 75 dollars for me to buy a ceiling fans.
Bottom line, 10 days with no A/C, AHS has internal communication problems, bad customer service, rude reps, reps stating inaccurate information, reps not going back to review case notes, impossible to reach a supervisor (one told me no one was available, one told me she needed to submit a written request to have one call me in 24hrs). I have two contracts for 2 houses with AHS, I am contemplating cancelling. I have two small children that are subject to 100 degree weather and they are not mitigating the problem.

We had filed a claim earlier before this recent one and a guy came out and fixed it. The new part he put in wasn't actually the part that we needed, so the dishwasher was still messing up. So he bought another piece that he put in and now it works. It was almost like a trial and error but he was very courteous and well dressed. It didn't take him long once he figured it out and we did a couple of washes and he said to let him know how it works. We told him that everything was working good and we had no problems at all. He knew what he was doing. So my overall experience with American Home Shield is wonderful. Every time we called and asked to get something fixed, they have been right on the spot and helped out immensely.

This is my second time having American Home Shield. They are normally ok with responded to the consumer needs but this time I have had the worst experience. My plumbing started leaking so I called them. They sent out a company that automatically made a diagnosis without even running the water. They diagnosed the link but had the wrong spot. I tried to tell American Home Shield what happen so that offered me a second opinion. They sent me the new contractors info, come to find out it was the exact same company as before.
I contacted them again and they responded with the same contractor again. I called them and the only thing they could say was that was the only plumbing contractor in my area so they would have to go with their recommendation. In the meantime another monthly payment just came out of my account. I am not a plumber but I would think before a leak can be diagnosed water should be ran to locate the correct spot. I have home warranty but I can't use it. The lady on the phone was very rude and unconcerned. I asked for the arbitration department and of course I have to write to them which will take several days to get a response and in the meantime my pipe is still leaking.

My issue was resolved spectacularly! After posting ON THIS SITE things really started going right. AHS responded to my post and within days a second opinion repairman was scheduled & he confirmed the 1st one's finding (that the washer needs to be replaced). AHS then contacted me immediately for the update.
Within another few days they called again to say that a repair would cost them $820, so would I like to try a repair again or use that money towards a new washer. I opted for the SCREW REPAIRING THIS P.O.S. AGAIN option. (I hate you maytag for making the Neptune) I was able to purchase a washer immediately and they said they'd send me the reimbursement check in 7-10 days.
That's when I thought I'm not going to update this review until it's fully over and they did everything they said. First came the $100 check to reimburse me for the intial fee the 1st day the repairman came (way back when!). I thought that would be a problem and would be the reason the $800 wouldnt be coming. So I continued to wait.
I had sent them the receipt immediately because I purchased the new washer from Sears and within minutes they emailed me the receipt which i forwarded to AHS. Super easy. It actually took about 2 weeks (about 9 business days) for the check to come. A couple days ago I recieved the $800 check. I am now VERY, VERY, VERY HAPPY WITH AHS.
I am extremely grateful to consumeraffairs.com because I'm pretty sure I'd still be dealing with a broken washer right now had I not found this site. It's wonderful that AHS actually monitors what their customers say online. Now please excuse me while I go do some more laundry in my awesome new LG that looks like a freakin spaceship that I only spent like 20 bucks for! Woo Hoo!!!
Original Review: Oct. 6, 2014
It's been about 8 WEEKS now that I don't have a working washer. According to the repairman, he requested they replace the washer from day 1 & repeatedly since then (there have been 4 total visits to date, not including the one we're waiting on today) as these are notorious repair nightmares & mine is proving his point. According to AHS, no diagnostic report from him is on file so he could not have requested replacement. The 1st visit he determined it needs a sensor that they don't make anymore. According to him, AHS took over in finding one & they did, he came to install it & it was still doing its issue of not spinning.
Since then we've waited for other various parts to come in and be installed and fail to fix the issue. All the while I have paid the $100 service fee and almost $60 each month for their fee automatically gets charged to my credit card. I asked AHS if my contract states a certain amount of time they have to repair something. Their answer was NO. They have unlimited time to repair something. I also asked if I could be credited all this time that I am paying the monthly fee and have no repaired appliance to show for it and also because I'm spending a small fortune at the Laundromat now. The most they could do for me they said was give me a $100 credit that I wouldn't have to pay the next service man for the next repair.
This does me absolutely no good because I'm going to get rid of them after this, and even if I stayed I have to remember I have a $100 credit a year or 2 from now. Yeah right! They could easily give me what I asked. They want to keep me paying the $60 a month. I'm gonna try out Sears home warranty. It's $5 less per month and $60 service fee. I have been an AHS customer for 12-15 years now and they've ALWAYS been great (even replaced my hot water heater super-fast, no problems). I don't know what changed & I'm not sticking around to find out.
Hi Marie, I would like to get a case manager involved to assist with moving the washer service work order along. May we contact you in regards to this?

The microwave wasn't responding very well, that when I pressed on it, the panel got pushed in and there's no way to push it back into place. So I called American Home Shield to see if somebody could come out and fix that for me. Their reps were always very polite, they have very good customer service, so that's great. It's just disappointing that they chose not to cover the parts that I thought they should cover. The contractor they sent was fine. He was personable and I think that they had to reschedule because he was sick one day, so it took two days to get him out there. That was disappointing, other than the fact that AHS wouldn't cover some things and I frankly do not have the time and energy to contest it but I really do think they should cover it. After American Home Shield declined it, I still need the work done, so I called the technician company and they just never called me back. I didn't think that was good customer service. So I still have a broken microwave.
I called them for another thing when I first moved in, and they really did go out of their way to try and help me, so in general they have very good customer service. I had a mixed experience with them. I don't like the part that I've spent a lot of $75 for the tech to come out, to tell me they can't do something. But the people themselves are very good.
Hi Ilene, I apologize that the microwave service work order wasn't a covered item. I understand your concern in paying your service fees. We're glad that our service agents were able to assist you. Thank you for sharing your experiences and being a valued customer.

I brought it up to one of your agents and she wasn't very helpful and was rude. Didn't even try to help me resolve my problem. What kind of service am I paying for every month? I'm very dissatisfied with the service that I'm getting especially from your agents who speaks with the customers over the phone. For this reason, I'm looking into not renewing my contract with your company next time unless all this has been rectified. I was left to deal with my AC issues with your recommended contractor all by myself which supposedly AHS should still be taking care of it because it is still part of the original problem to begin with. The contractor has not finished their job yet. AHS and your contractors are apparently not communicating with each other with its work progress and anything that still pending and needs to be done. Thanks a lot.

I'm satisfied with American Home Shield. Now the hardest part is if we have something that's an emergency, sometimes it has to take a while to get that escalated, like I had a house with a pipe broken so the water was turned off. It was a weekend and they told us it wasn't an emergency. If I could submit a claim online, it's easy, but the last time I had an air conditioning problem and I called them the wait was kind of long but their representatives are wonderful. They're always very nice and very helpful. Also, I've had really good luck with contractors they send out. I've been very happy.

We have a couple rental houses and we had some air conditioning unit and electrical problems so we called in to submit claims. I wasn't real pleased with the electrical person because I felt like they overcharged me. As a consumer with American Home Shield I'm concerned about the people that they use, and they only use certain people. It's like they protect the people that they're paying instead of the person that's paying them for the service, which is me.
I also had a lot of problems with some of the air conditioner guys and the different people that I dealt with. I reported that and even did a 3-way conference call with the customer service rep on the phone. The rep just said that they forwarded the parts and we just have to use the people they chose. It took them five days to get air conditioner put into the house, even if we had a newborn baby living in the home. They were saying that I didn't tell them but I did tell the representative that, and she told me that the parts had not come in yet. I was a little dissatisfied with them.
I'm pleased with the product that they carry once they get it done, only the people that they use. They don't follow through. But overall they do get the problem resolved but sometimes it takes longer than 72 hours, sometimes it's a week or a week and a half. I had to subtract my rent money off of the people and they had to have somewhere else to stay for a week because they did not get the part in for the air conditioner. Those were just some things that I was real displeased.
The last house that they did, we had to pay five hundred some dollars and then the people that they send out is the ones that will tell us the price. And American Home Shield never calls me back to say that I gotta pay the difference of two hundred some dollars. How do I know American Home Shield paid for the warranty and then were paying him. I'm not feeling comfortable with that. But we have rental houses and it helps us out a little bit, though it hasn't helped us in the last six months. We've lost a lot of money with this situation.
We've told some of them about the things we weren't real pleased with, but the representative for American Home Shield was not very friendly. I said "Why would I want to pay money to somebody that don't even know how to talk to people." It was like the rep didn't really support me as the person who paid them. And I paid more than $75 out this year than I have since I've had it. I wasn't real pleased with the way that she made me feel.
Also we had a plumbing company that we had problems with and we told them about that. We still had to end up using them. It was three days before they could get the plumbing fixed so it's an inconvenience for us after a week. I have had some complaints with this situation with American Home Shield. Now I'm kind of reluctant to put it on the new house that I just moved in. The prices that they're coming up with are ridiculous and they can't break down anything.
But I would still recommend American Home Shield to someone because of the actual money that they save me. Just one thing that they don't tell you is how much you pay versus what they pay. I noticed the prices of the air conditioners have gone up. I know Freon is expensive but I have a bill now that I have to pay even after I paid my $75 fee. The contractor that I talked to said that it was a difference that American Home Shield didn't pay and it's like a difference of $233. We also needed some electrical work in one of the houses and then he would charge us $400 on the side to do it. I thought that was in my warranty, but he said it wasn’t. So overall I'm not very satisfied with them.
Hi Karen, I apologize for the inconvenience you've experienced. If you would like to discuss this further, I can have a case manager contact you.

I’m very angry with American Home Shield. I had a broken toilet bowl and when the person came out to repair it, they said it wasn’t normal wear and tear and they denied the claim. They either lied to whoever came out from the plumbing company, or to me or to American Home Shield. I don’t know who did what, but they basically lied and I was denied the claim.
I spent $600 to have the repair take place that should never have been the case. The technician said to me, “Well, I don’t make that decision.” He took pictures and he said, “I’m gonna send these pictures to them and they’ll decide whether the claim is valid or not.” When they denied it and I called American Home Shield yesterday, the woman I spoke to said, “Well, they never sent us any pictures. We did deny it based on what the technician told us.” So the technician told them one story and told me something else. I’m very upset. American Home Shield doesn’t care. The case is closed because they take the word of the technician over mine. I’ve used them for a long time. This is the first time this has happened. But I’ve been told by other people that they’re starting to reject claims now for whatever reason. I guess business is tough.

I called twice that week at 8008581922 and heard a message hold time greater than 15 minutes, hold much greater was not said. I hung up. I called AHS again (they had record of my call on 7/28 to cancel account) and was told you can't cancel because the retention department has to cancel, calling customer rep isn't sufficient. Imagine that!!! I sent an e-mail on their website 8/30 (no response) again after they took another payment on 8/29. I had to cancel debit card and file a dispute with my bank.
Let me tell you my reason to cancel. My garage door fell off the track. AHS sent technician on 4/16. He said doors aren't covered and charged $192 including the service call. I was OK with that, doors are not covered. However, a bracket was broken and he said it was unrepairable and I needed a new garage door. I called another company, BBB approved, repaired bracket in 10 minutes and has been fine since then. I have not had any bad experiences with American Home Shield. My recent claim was for my air conditioning. It was a maintenance deal that we pay for twice a year. When he came to check the system out, he found a burnt plug and a burnt receptacle up in the attic, so he went ahead and replaced that. I'm glad he found it coz it could have caused a fire.
The claim prior to that was for my dryer. The guy fixed it but I wasn't happy about that service because they were unorganized. Maybe it was just a small town repair business off a home, because they had to come out and see what it was and had to order the part. The part came in on a Wednesday and the lady said it would be the following Tuesday before they could repair it. I told them that was not acceptable. She said they'll book Friday, and I said that's still not acceptable. So they went ahead and made arrangements and came out to take care of it. The end result was satisfactory but the length of time it took was not to my satisfaction. But it's not enough for me to drop American Home Shield. I had my oven claim too. When the contractor, a GE dealer, came to my house, he had everything he needed and he left an hour later and my oven was working. So that was great.

AHS stiffed me. The shower valve was leaking. AHS denied coverage. Plumber is rude to my 80 year old father and leaves the job site mad because AHS said he was supposed to call for authorization for extra work. Plumber wanted $50 cash from my father to cut a small access hole to make it easier to fix the valve. After several phone conversations and 2 weeks AHS admitted they made a mistake and said shower valve is covered. The second plumber comes out and now has a different story. Same problem is now going to cost 2 times as much $315.00 and AHS says they won't cover it. They did agree to cash me out, whatever that means. Bottom line, I missed 2 days of work and spent hours on hold and haggling with AHS. This is not worth the time and aggravation. The most recent claim we had with American Home Shield has been wonderful. The people were wonderful, responded within 24 hours, and I had no problems whatsoever. When I first started out with them, it was absolutely horrible because I have two homes. And the people they were sending were not qualified. They did damage to the house. I was ready to switch and had to fight to get the money back from the contractors they sent to have reputable local contractors come in to make some of the repairs. But once I got through that and I told them I don't want these people back and I want other people recommended in the area, things got a lot better.
To have to call outside people after you're paying so much money every year was a little crazy right at the beginning. And the plumber that actually came the first time that did all the damage did pay for the other plumber that had to come and make the repair. He did admit that he fired the person cause he was not adequate enough to do that kind of work. They should have never sent him out to my home, number one. And number two, they should have followed up on any of the calls he had done.
So I just told American Home Shield to never send that plumber this way again. But they would not help me to the damage and water loss and the leaks that were never repaired right. They told me that I had to take it up with the contractor. That's what really got me upset. That they did not stand behind who they sent. But since then, it's been fine. I've had AC work, plumbing and everything's been wonderful. I'll just advise people to make sure they read the fine print on the contract.

I called AHS because the water is leaking from the roof. The person that took my information sent somebody out. The guy was nice, he took care of it and my roof is not leaking anymore. But I had a problem with my hot water heater before and they wanted $1000 for an upgrade and to put the stuff in. I don't think that was fair. That's what I've been dealing with AHS for about 20 years. I don't think I really knew my contract. I'm gonna try to find somebody else.
HI Cheryl, I apologize for any confusion the contract verbiage may have caused in regards to the water heater service request. I would like to have a case manager contact you to discuss this further if that is okay?

I have a couple of properties covered for several years (over 10) by American Home Shield. Unfortunately, AHS service is not what it used to be and they have developed a trend of hiring vendors with less and less experience. My recent experience involves 2 Air Conditioning service calls at 2 condos I own that occurred all within the last month.
At one condo (a 585 sq ft space), the first vendor sent, assessed the unit as failing to cool properly, running 18 degrees off of (warmer than) the thermostat reading. However, that vendor said the unit was "older than dirt" and that AHS would not replace or repair the unit since it was technically still running. So apparently the unit can be old but they won't repair or replace it to a standard of running properly? A second vendor was requested for a second opinion and reiterated the same statement that it was still "running" so AHS would not repair it to a properly running standard but that we could replace the unit to the tune of OVER $6000. I know what the cost is for new A/C units sized for service of a 585 sq ft 1 bed 1 bath condo and it is NOWHERE near $6k. So AHS sent a rip off artist for the 2nd opinion.
The second condo, a vendor was sent out due to a leak from the Air Conditioning unit. The drain lines were supposedly cleaned in May by the last AHS vendor that went out for a leak...$75 for the service call and all that was noted was wrong was a need to clean the lines. So, less than 5 months later, this new AHS vendor say the lines are clogged again and that there is a need for a unit replacement that "surprise" AHS won't cover. Anyone who knows about cleaning out AC drain lines knows that once a year would be the max for something of that nature.
The only reason to get a warranty on older systems is for peace of mind.... but there is no peace of mind when you constantly have to go back to AHS to insist on the coverage you paid for or work with vendors who make upselling a part of their AHS contract visits. If AHS honors their contract of repair or replace, I will have no problem in giving a positive update to this review.
Hi Yvonne, I would like to have a case manager take a further look into your a/c service requests on the two condos if you don't mind?

Received a voicemail stating a reimbursement check is in the mail. Thank you. Unsure why extraordinary effort is required on my part to get this resolved though—still would like to know for future reference the criteria used to assess Section C, 2.c, the required contractual attempt of "reasonable effort to expedite emergency service" to avoid the next AHS representative only applying legalistic quotes without applying logic to a specific situation.
Nevertheless the situation is resolved and I appreciate everyone’s effort!
Original Review: Oct. 2, 2014
I incurred a $204 bill due to a plumbing leak under the kitchen sink on 28 Jul 14. This is a result of an AHS contractor unable to respond for 36+ hrs to respond, forcing a local plumbing company to be hired for this emergency situation. This was also discussed on the phone with an AHS representative resistant and unhelpful to resolve this immediate issue, passing the burden off to the contractor who apparently couldn't respond.
After several going back and forths it was finally referred, then quickly denied based on "Section C, Item 1.c, AHS does not reimburse for service performed without its prior approval." I submit Section C also states, under 2.c, and is applicable as described in my initial request, It's reasonable to assume, given the plumber hired had to replace a leaking valve or otherwise suffer severe water damage, that this situation constituted an emergency where a "reasonable effort to expedite emergency service" should be applied as stated in the contract. This "reasonable effort" was not applied per the contract.
The letter of denial does not address in the context of Section C, 2.c, the required contractual attempt of "reasonable effort to expedite emergency service" -- this is the basis of the claim. The constant reference of "no prior approval" since initial discussions, without consideration of 2.c indicates a questionable business practice designed only to avoid proper payment and possibly to meet a denial quota.
A chronological argument was provided that begins with poor customer service—the judgment of the AHS representative during this emergency is not a solid basis for continual claim denial without addressing the criteria for the emergency situation referred above.
Hi Paul, I would like to have a case manager contact you to discuss the delay in your plumbing service request. Is it okay to call?

I have had AHS before and they were easy to use and a great thing to have with the purchase of our last home. We decided we had a great experience before but, unfortunately, this time has been a nightmare. They are not honoring their contracts (that you get after you pay) not only with service but they are not honoring their cancellation policy either. My contractor stated they seem to be doing a lot of denying when it should be covered within the contract limits. He told me I am better off paying out of pocket.
For reference, policy States the following: The consumer may cancel the contract at any time and for any reason. If the customer or AHS cancels the contact (their misspelling) within the first 30 days following the beginning of the contract term: If AHS has not provided any services, the customer will receive a full refund of all contract fees paid. They will not honor this. I contacted them for an electrician and the denied the claim and wouldn't tell me exactly why in the section they referenced. I in turn paid out of pocket for the Electrician and did not have any claims or "services" provided to me by AHS.
Due to the nature of the denial and the section referenced as to why they were denying the Rep pretty much told me a problem occurred that didn't happen and that the electrician didn't say happened. They made up the reason why I had an electrician come out and then she told me that because my contract was effective on 09/27 and my claim was made on 09/29 it was not a valid claim and was preexisting. Her manager told me that a simple visual inspection would have told me there was a preexisting condition yet I am not an electrician. So I don't think that telling me that looking at electrical would have tipped me off to my electrical failing. These people are crooked and the people giving more stars are very lucky they have had good service.
Hi Danielle, I would like to have a case manager contact you in regards to this matter. Is it okay to call?

AHS has always been a valued part of our home budget process. The ability to call and/or use the website for scheduling services after hours or on the weekends has proven very helpful over the years. The last two occasions involved our aging air conditioner (central), which went well with the scheduling, contractor provided, fixing the problem, etc. The only "hitch" was not being able to complete the website scheduling due to some EPA issues that didn't allow us to skip the "warning" and keep going with the request... We HAD TO call and schedule the repair.
There was also no ability to indicate it was an A/C problem in Florida in the middle of the hottest part of summer. We had to sit-it-out until the contractor called us (both times the problem was over the weekend). Once the contractor called - it went smoothly and quickly, and the contractor was spot-on with diagnosing and fixing the problem(s) very quickly and thoroughly! They were professional, dressed well, openly communicated in an understandable manner and looked the system over for other potential issues while they were there.
I was very pleased beyond the initial contacting process through AHS. If that part could be smoothed out on the website with an "agree" button, to get past the "warning" announcement about the EPA charges...great. Also, some sort of follow-up via telephone or email from AHS or the contractor over a weekend to indicate that the service request is in, and when it is likely to be addressed/scheduled would be a HUGE relief.

I'm very pleased with American Home Shield. As a matter of fact, I was recommending to my sister and her husband the day she had applied for it because every time something untoward happened, there was no hesitation for anybody to come here and take care of what’s here to be done.
I had two refrigerators that I submitted a claim for: one needed repair and the other one just needed to be replaced back in June when we were on vacation. When I called AHS, they took the information down and then had a gentleman call me. And then he was right here when he said he was gonna be here, corrected the problem with one refrigerator that needed repair, and explained to me what was wrong. I had no problems whatsoever.
The only thing that was confusing to me was I had the refrigerator hood and it had the waterline but they said they couldn’t connect it to the waterline because it had a copper pipe. It does not makes sense to me because whenever I had the lines put in, they tell me I had to have a copper pipe and now they’re telling me it has to be plastic or something? They couldn't hook the icemaker up to the line that I already have until I would get a plastic line or whatever it's called. So that was just confusing to me. But other than that, everything was fine. It was a very good experience overall and that’s not even a complaint about the icemaker. If that’s what they’re instructed to do, then that’s what they’re instructed to do.

My most recent claim with American Home Shield was about the air conditioner. This had been the third time they had to come out and repair it. I tried to submit my claim online, but for some reason it didn’t work. Anyway, I called in and told them what the problem was. As always, they set it up and send someone out. Then, they give you the information of who it is. And the contractors they sent out were good. They know what they’re doing. For this last claim, it was JCL Heating and Air Conditioning. Since the repair, the air conditioner has been working well.
I’ve had American Home Shield’s service for six years, but you don’t really know you need it until you need it. We’d probably be paying big bucks if not for it, so it really saves us money. Throughout my experience with them, I only got disappointed one time and that was when my air conditioner went out and it took them five days to get someone out. But other than that, I don’t have any complaints about them. I’ve had a great experience with American Home Shield. I certainly would recommend them to a friend.

It was going off for a little bit and we were not sure if it was ours or a neighbor's leak so we decided to call somebody from AHS to take a look at it. Submitting a claim was pretty easy and they sent someone to contact us in a few days. They didn't call us back immediately. In the past, sometimes they call us that same day within an hour. I have recommended AHS. In fact, my hairdresser who has a big home, is with American Home Shield now because of me. And there have been a couple of other ladies at the beauty shop that hear me speak of AHS that just recently got homes and they're with AHS also because of me. However I don't like the fact that I feel like I'm being penalized because I got old appliances. I'm a veteran's widow. I don't have a lot of money and everything in my condo were already used, and I couldn't afford any new stuff.
When I first bought my condo back in 2002 or 2003, my experiences were really good. AHS came through for me very, very good. But now if you got an old refrigerator, American Home Shield got problems with you having an old refrigerator. If you got an old air conditioner unit, you can keep it but they aren’t going to fix it and you got to pay for the stuff that go in it to make the air cold. Somebody told me they had to pay almost $300 for the service charge and have that cold stuff put in the air conditioner, which sort of bothered me.
I know a lot of the people that live out here, there are a lot of older people, and they told me that they had American Home Shield but what they did was they bought all new appliances for their place so that they wouldn't have to pay American Home Shield. So they were all telling me that every year that I pay all these money, it's just one appliance that I couldn't update at my place. But I never felt comfortable doing that. So I'm staying with AHS. I'm going to renew again.
Hi Barbara, thank you for the feedback and we understand your concern. If you have a old appliances or systems that fail from normal use, a contractor will come out to diagnose and advise us of what the best repair will be. There are times where we have to replace those items which is covered by your warranty. Feel free to call in a service request on those old items that fail. We do not penalize our customers, but instead we do what is best for your covered appliance.

I bought my house at the end of June and was given the best coverage package offered with my closing. 3 days after moving in our AC went out in the middle of the summer. After multiple calls with hours of wait times we had a company dispatched. The first guys came out and sprayed our condenser unit out claiming that was the issue. When the guy talked to me he reeked of beer. I called and told them to take them off my preferred list after an argument with the rep. Company number 2 is then sent out with just as awful an experience and no repairs. Third company comes out, puts a work order in to replace the condenser unit and the entire attic unit, ducts and all, and I get a call back saying they denied everything and would only replace the compressor. After fighting with AHS they decided to replace the whole condenser unit.
Fast forward 2 months later and now I have thousands in repairs that have to be done. I have called AHS 3 times tonight with a minimum of a 20 minute hold time just to get a person on the line. During the call I am constantly placed on hold.
I came home from work and my attic unit has leaked water into my 3 year olds bedroom and caused the ceiling to start falling down. The first person I spoke to was absolutely no help. The second girl I talked to told me that they will have one of their on call companies come out for emergency service. I informed them that a family member works for one of their contractors as a secretary and I would get in touch with her to see if they have an emergency service since the 1 other contractor doesn't. The girl told me she would call back in 10 minutes. I never got that call after an hour. This girl also told me that if nobody can be reached for emergency services that they would let me choose an out of network company to come do the repairs.
I called back, sat on hold for 30 minutes waiting for an answer, and when I finally got one I was treated rudely and was constantly placed on hold. I told them what I spoke to the previous girl about and what she told me would be done. They contacted the emergency service and the guy on call didn't answer his phone. When I brought up the out of service repairs I was placed on hold yet again. When they came back they refused to allow them to come out. By this time I started losing my cool.
They refuse to pay for damages caused by a covered issue that wouldn't have happened if they would have approved the very first full system replacement claim by stating they aren't obligated. I now am down to 1 room, with a queen size bed, and having to sleep 3 people due to the third room being remodeled. I informed them that my wife is due to have our second child as of 3 days ago and they refuse to expedite the claim. This is the worst service I have EVER had in my life. I will never buy another warranty from this company again and would recommend that everyone avoid this company at all costs.

Previous experiences with AHS have been, for the most part, pleasant. Timing the technician calls is the worst part but they will have a hard time matching my schedule. However, here is my latest adventure story and I am sticking to it. It all started as a noise from the pump of the washer and a call to AHS for service. The technician kept changing the time to perform the service. All seemed to work-out as someone was at home at the time of the technician visit. Technician was paid the service fee and promised to return with a new part in a few days. AHS then informed me that the washer would be replaced and not repaired. I was not happy with the quality of the suggested replacement and instead opted to purchase a washer locally.
Know this: if you are not happy with the product, AHS will not help. The manufacturer's guarantee is your recourse until it expires. (Imagine plugging it in and it does not work, no taking back to the store.) I was informed that an amount of $479.26 would be reimbursed to me (no matter what price I paid for the replacement). I called twice to confirm this agreement and the amount to be paid (recorded call) as I would need to open a credit card to obtain a discount that would allow me to purchase the washer, I had selected, for slightly less than what was being offered. Receipts were submitted and a check was issued for the amount of $462.29. A difference of $16.97 less than what was originally promised.
The result is that by obtaining the discount (a discount which now only benefits AHS) I was able to pay for the washer for less than what was being offered for reimbursement. I provided the delivery and installation which would have been included in the AHS supplied machine. Now the kicker: When I called to ask how AHS calculated the reimbursement amount ($462.29) I was told that AHS would only reimburse what I had paid for the washer and hoses. I was told that they had added a further 6.3% for the sales tax, to my discounted cost.
I did some mathematics and called again to be put on hold many times until AHS suddenly determined that the actual taxes should have been 7.15% (Apparently Binged it :)) and that an amount of $455.09 should have been reimbursed. During this second call AHS could never describe how they arrived at the reimbursement amount of $462.29. Suddenly very quiet about accounting methods but that I should be happy because they had reimbursed me more than they should have. Know this: The people at AHS who determine the amount of the reimbursement are not the people you talk to on the phone. Never mind that I now have a credit card I did not need.
Here is how it should have been: Washer and hoses Without discount is $447.08. Taxes at the correct rate of 7.15% is $31.74. Gives a total of $478.82. This value being very close to the original offer of $479.26.
Therefore this is how its going to be: 1. The discount I obtained does not belong to AHS (they are not responsible for my new credit card). 2. The contract I have with AHS does not state that an amount 'UP TO' their quoted reimbursement will be paid. The conversations that I had, with the representative, ensuring the reimbursement quoted would be paid, regardless of what I paid for the replacement, are recorded and will become evidence. 3. AHS's interpretation of the discount, they benefited from me, leads them to believe that I still owe them an amount of $16.53. Looking at AHS's fuzzy tax math and their interpretation of their own contract results in AHS still owing me an amount $0.44. I will be paying them an amount of $16.53 to keep my ethics intact. I will then commence legal proceedings, with the help of my Attorney General, to a claim of $0.44. You have to love the election season.
Know that this it is a matter of principle and ethics. Something that must be fought, no matter what the cost (that's what he said). Renew my contract is the funniest thing I have heard all day!

It was noticed the same day that I submitted the claim online and based on the email that I got back, it listed the name of the vendor that would be coming out. I called that vendor. I was told they couldn't come out that same day, which was unfortunate for us because the sink was overflowing. I called American Home Shield back and they said that the vendor was the vendor for the service agreement. I didn't like what I was being told, that I couldn't get anyone out there that day. I had to wait basically 48 hours for someone to get out here. The rep was pleasant but that's not what I wanted to hear at that time.
Anyway, the contractor was pleasant enough. On that ticket though, we had two issues. One was the overflow sink and another was the leaking faucet. He determined that the faucet was not leaking which before he was there and since he's left, that faucet still leaks so that was never resolved. As far as repair on the sink, that was acceptable. We have been with American Home Shield since at least 2003... Our washer went out so we called for service. To save money we requested service on our Washer, Dryer and Oven. A repair person contracted by AHS came out said the washer was shot. Never looked at oven. Who knows if they actually fixed dryer because I have no washer to use. I was told by repair person I'd hear from AHS within 48 hrs about replacing washer. 48 hours go by. I call, I'm on hold 29 minutes and told I have to call another number - on hold 16 minutes. I was told a manager would call me back in 4 hours. 24 hours later... I go to Facebook and tell them to have someone contact me. I get a call saying that they'd have an answer and I'd hear from someone on Wednesday.
Wednesday comes and goes (and surprise, surprise, no call) so I Facebook again. I hear from someone on Thursday. I'm told they are going to replace my washer. NOW MIND YOU, my house is small and it is a stackable. I get a call Saturday, from a repair person hired by AHS who is coming out to get model numbers so they can get parts for my washer. SO instead of me being able to drive 30 miles to the laundry mat, I wait. He comes out says the same thing the 1st repair person said. He tells me to call AHS 1st thing Monday. I call Monday and I am told they will find a replaceable model for my washer can call me back in a couple of hours.
When they call me back (I know right, I should be shocked that they even called back, right) they tell me they found a similar washer but it doesn't match up to my dryer so I am SOL because they don't have to match it up. SO in order for me to have a washer like I have now, I need to spend $870.82 for a dryer... or they will give me $890.44 so I can go buy a washer. NOW HERE THE REAL KICKER, I can go online and I can find a stackable washer and dryer that are similar but in order for AHS to give me the money to buy the washer, I have to pay for it and send them the receipt and then they will send me the payment.
1st of all, since AHS hasn't done one thing they said they would do, what would make me think that after I purchase the washer that they will send me the money? 2nd of all, since the washer was stacked since day one of my contract with AHS, and if they can’t find one that can be stacked now, how is that my problem? I purchased the contract with AHS 11 or more years ago under the impression that I would have carefree appliances. All I have received from AHS is the run around and a headache.

We have been with AHS for 18 years. In late Aug 2014 we call for service on our refrigerator. AHS sends out the 1st company the tech mis-diagnoses the problem. We call AHS again. They send out Sears on Sept 8th. The Tech tells them the parts cannot be found and it wouldn't matter, it's a waste of time to repair, it needs replaced. Then AHS spends two weeks trying to find the parts, then they tell us they found them. Then Sears says, "no we did not," then AHS sends us a letter telling us what they don't cover. I call back saying just repair what you do cover.
Meanwhile the Fridge dies, AHS calls and says, "we are going to replace your KitchenAid Fridge." Next day they call back saying, "no we are not, but, we will give you $130.00 for the parts we would have covered." I called AHS and tried to find out what was going on and totally got the runaround. Agent said something about a supervisor would have to review and call me back. After several hours and days of calling back again & again, this time no supervisor/manager on duty. Left message on manager's voice mail, and as of this submission I have yet to speak to a supervisor.
My advice: do not buy a warranty. Put the same amount in a savings account and cut out the liars and cheats. I would not advise anyone to buy a policy with AHS.

I was extremely satisfied with American Home Shield. I didn't get any objections, runaround or excuses. I had a problem, called them and they sent someone out. They approved it, got it fixed, and they went on their way, and I was happy with the overall experience. If I had to find any fault, the guy they had sent out didn't speak extremely good English and was a little hard to understand, but he was extremely courteous and tried his best. He did a fine job. We just had a little bit of a language barrier initially, but he did a fantastic work. Ordered the parts needed, came back and put them in. One part was wrong but he got that corrected, came back and redid it. It was quick response. There was a wait for the parts, but that's certainly understandable. So overall, I couldn't be happier. The appliance works great.
We are happy to hear that there was a quick resolution to your service repair need! We appreciate the feedback Bill!

Every year for the last few years, I had to call American Home Shield and have the air conditioner guy come out, recharge the refrigerant. And it led to this year the guy that came said that the coil was damaged. It basically had rusted out maybe that's why it was leaking Freon. Submitting a claim to AHS is okay. I did it online. The contractors they sent were good. They fixed what I needed fixed.
The one thing I don't like about the contractors is that they give you a four to eight hours window time. That's stupid. If you go to their place, you don't want to wait on them. So what the hell do we have to wait on them? If there's anything they could do to narrow the window time down it would help. But I will add that all the contractors they've sent (cause I've got two houses with AHS) are real good about contacting me far enough advance so that I've got at least 30, 40 minutes to meet them. I have recommended AHS. My experience with them has been very good.

My experience with Home Shield has been absolutely, one thousand percent fantastic. I've had three claims in the last couple of months. The most recent one was the oven. We had an electrical problem with it. I picked up the phone, dialed in, and I explained to them what was wrong. They scheduled me a contractor appointment, and then gave me the phone number. Everything happened real quickly because they sent me the email immediately so I get all the information. They told me everything on the phone very well. And I waited for the contractor to call, which only took them about a day, and that was cause it was at night when I called.
They called me, we set up the appointment, and the gentleman came out. They had a little problem trying to get a contractor for that one because of the type of unit it was. And then they found a local guy that finally could do it, so it took them an extra day which was no big deal, so it wasn't a problem. And the guy came right out. He knew exactly what was wrong. He ordered the part and he scheduled a date to put the part in which was about eleven days forward. But he said that if I get the part in right away cause he shipped it right to my house, I could call him and they'd squeeze me in. The part did come in. I called him and they came in two days later, and went ahead and repaired it.
I've had them now for three years and I've used them half a dozen times. Every single case was the same scenario with the way it went down and the way it was handled. Everything was explained well with me upfront. I paid my deductible fee that I pay upfront, and they took real good care of it. I've always been really leery about this home policy programs because I've lived in California before and the contractors there are lousy. The speed was lousy. The work was subpar. They had people that were brought in from overseas that didn't have a clue about what they were doing. The one I had over there was not Home Shield.
The difference in Colorado with this Home Shield one is that the contractors are knowledgeable. They know what's going on. They're not just people that came over to our country with a little bit of electrical background, and that's what we wound up with in California all the time. I've been just totally pleased with the way they've handled everything, the speed, and the efficiency. Even if there's a problem, it's not a problem cause they handled it themselves. It's been really good experience.
My contract comes up for renewal. Every time I send in the survey, I tell them the same thing. They always ask if I'm gonna renew us. Absolutely. I'm gonna continue to renew and anybody that I know that gets a house or something that needs one, I would definitely refer them to Home Shield as well. They were kind, they were experienced, efficient, and they make us feel like we know them when they come over. They came over wanting to really fix it right. Not have to go a dozen times back and forth, and they really looked concerned about what needed to be done.

We had gotten back from vacation late on Sunday and on Tuesday, the bottom of the water heater went out. We submitted a claim online to American Home Shield. Within a matter of a couple of hours, I had a contractor identified. The contractor called me and said they didn't have any openings until like Thursday or Friday. So I'm stuck. What am I going to do? About a half an hour later, the tech called me. He was 20 miles from my house. He said, "I'm on my way back to the shop and it's 2 o'clock in the afternoon. I've still got time. Can I stop by and look at your problem and see what we can do?" I said, "Certainly." So he popped in, looked at it, and the whole bottom was rusted out. He said, "You got to have a new water heater." The problem at that point was American Home Shield had to order it so it took three days to get it. But that was the only hold up or negative experience we've had with them since we've had them. We've had them two years going on three.
The performance of the new water heater was super. It came in and the guy was here at 8 o'clock in the morning and in two hours, he was out of here. He took the old water heater with him, cleaned up the area that he worked in and was gone. Almost all of our experiences with them have been like that. We had a problem last year with the air conditioning. That problem was getting the parts they needed because they had to be ordered and shipped in. And that took a few days and had to be the hottest part of the summer. But other than that, with the performance of the people or American Home Shield getting contractors to us, we have not had a problem. Overall, we had an outstanding and awesome experience with them. They've been very good to us. We appreciate it.

Excellent! I recommend AHS. I don't want to do without it. AHS has chosen good contractors. They've all been very good. Their contractors were very professional. My last claim was on an electrical outlet, a ground fault receptacle problem. Submitting the claim was a good experience. It was just a simple phone call and then the company called and we were able to work out a time that they could come out and they did a great job. It wasn't really a big, major problem but they checked everything out for us and it came out well. They just had to do some resetting.
That group as well as the air conditioning people that we had before when we had to have an air conditioner unit replaced, they were very, very fine to work with. We've had that particular heat and air people a few times last summer. We had a unit replaced and then we just had to have one of our new units checked on which was just a Freon problem.

He kept working with it until he found and figured out where that piece was plugged and it's been working ever since.
Most of my experiences with American Home Shield have all been very positive. I have only one but when the thing wasn't resolved after a couple weeks, I just kept calling them back and they finally put me over to a recovery program. They put me over into another area and the little gal was fabulous. I think they either use contractors that are the worst, or they tell them to procrastinate on service orders - it is that terrible! Only one occasion with excellent service.
2012 - Garage door would not open, contractor was so rude that I told him to leave and not return.
2012 - Electrical short in heater unit. The contractor that came out was very old and grumpy, and looked for 100 ways to not have to fix it - claiming it was not in the contract, calling with AHS most of his time in the house seeing how he could get out of it, horrible experience.
2012 - replacement of pool pump - excellent fast service from contractor.
2013 - refrigerator leaking on floor - took 3 weeks (wet floors everyday!) to repair - then 3 months later same problem reoccurred. Took another 2 weeks! More wet floors. Then the line busted in back, 2 weeks, more wet floors. Ice bucket replacement took 1 week, but quit working after 3 weeks.
2013 - dishwasher broke - took 3 weeks for replacement.
2014 - replaced leaking shower parts - pretty good service - took only 1 week. However, the warranty did not cover a plugged toilet - foreign object(!!) - wow! Sept 2014 - replacement AC unit (temperatures at 90 degrees with 90% humidity) - been waiting for 3 weeks!! In these temperatures - lost tenants - $3000 rent loss.

My wife and I got a home warranty through AHS when we purchased our second home. We filed 3 claims in the first 6 months of owning the home, 2 of those with great results. The 3rd was for a plumbing issue that didn't get fixed or correctly diagnosed. Us not being plumbers, we didn't know how to remedy the issue. Fast forward 3 months and a house guest realizes the source of the problem.
We called to see if we could get another service call but this time not have to pay the mandatory $75 fee since the first service didn't get the problem fixed. We didn't realize at this point there is a 60-day recall period of which we were outside. That was our mistake, and we understood that once we were informed of it. However, the first rep we spoke with was incredibly rude and flatly refused to either accommodate the request or escalate the issue I see if there could be a solution. We even told her we were considering purchasing another policy once our current one had expired, which is no longer the case, and still the only response was literally "no".
We called back to speak with a supervisor. After a 40-minute wait for the supervisor to get to the phone again, we got a flat, inconsiderate "no", no apology and no seeming concern for our continued business. I do not recommend this company and will never recommend them to anyone I know.

AHS felt that 7 days without hot water was acceptable. When I asked whether there was any mechanism for expedited or weekend service, they said 'no', as they did not consider this to be an emergency.

I have tenants in a property, there are three women whom of which one is disabled and cleanliness is a major concern for them. The hot water heater began to leak a couple of days ago, I filled out the form on AHS website, and they dispatched a contractor to do the work of inspecting the water heater $75 fee, which I paid right away. The contractor A Water Solution Inc. comes to the property at 2 pm on a Friday and tells the tenants it's really bad, they need to shut off the water, and open it up and drain all of the water out. When I asked when he would be able to fix it he said I would have to deal with AHS to work out terms, but he might be able to fit it in Tuesday. That's four days without water to shower with, for four days.
The AHS rep called me told me there would be an additional $300 worth of "customizing" the contractor would need to do in order to fulfill the terms that I would need to pay for but they could get the water heater and everything ready to go right away. I explain to him that the contractor let me know he wouldn't be able to get out until next Tuesday. The man from AHS sounded legitimately concerned and told me he would figure out a way to get them there sooner and would give me a call back.
No phone call, three hours go by I call AHS, I sit on hold for almost 20 minutes, I get a woman who tells me they sent an email (I checked, they didn't) to let me know Tuesday was as soon as it could be done. I told them to take that contractor off the list then, they cannot meet the needs, they don't work weekends and I'll pay a premium to have it done today (Friday) or tomorrow (Saturday). She said that since that contractor doesn't work weekends, and the weekends aren't included in their 48 hour window for the contractor to return to do work, then they're within their rights to and contract agreement to come back Tuesday. They made no promises the work would be done on Tuesday, just that the contractor -should- come back by then.
I work for the State and I'm just going to go ahead and make sure everyone knows what a scam insurance company this is. It would be cheaper for me to do it on my own and I could do it today, plenty of plumbers in the central Ohio area looking for money. Don't buy into the American Home Shield b.s. You're better off fixing things yourself, at least then the tenants you have cannot come after you for breach of your contract because in Ohio it's in our laws I must supply hot water at all times. Well 96 hours of standby because AHS doesn't care, doesn't help me or my tenants. They just want your money with nothing in return and by the phone calls I had with people today, it's MORE than apparent.

They answered my questions and set up an appointment with a repair person rather quickly so everything was good.
After the repair, the AC has been fine. Apparently there's a leak in my system but there has to be a significant leak before anything can be replaced so we're just keeping an eye on it. Our system provides the heat and air so we will have someone come out to check the unit as it gets closer to colder weather just to make sure that they're operating okay. As a first time home owner, I was excited at the thought of a home protection plan. As I was house hunting, I kept hearing great things about home warranties and how beneficial they were. My realtor strongly encouraged me to consider a home warranty plan from AHS. He said he had many success stories with the company in the past. I felt like having the home protection plan removed a tiny bit of stress from the home buying process. It was nice to think I would have low service and repair costs during my first year in a new home.
I had a home inspection prior to closing on the house. Regarding the furnace, the home inspector's report stated that "there were no significant visual deficiencies observed in the visible portion of the heating system." There was rust noted, but the furnace was "functioning properly at this time". After I closed on the house, I called the gas company to turn on my gas. The gas worker said that the pilot light was not functioning properly and needed to be serviced. The service contractor sent by AHS said that the furnace was unsafe and needed to be replaced. AHS said that the damage was a pre-existing condition which excluded them from helping repair/replace the furnace. They estimated replacement to cost $4000.
I felt very misled in the whole process. The furnace was functioning when I purchased the house and home protection plan according to my home inspection. AHS was very difficult to get a hold of to answer my questions and concerns. Dealing with this issue and AHS has turned out to be a major stressor. I am very disappointed.

Original Review: Sept. 23, 2014
I have been an American Home Shield (AHS) Customer for over 12 years. All in all it has not been a bad experience until now. Last week Wednesday, 9/17/14 my hot water heater started leaking. Submitted claim online about 8:10 am. Had to shut water off to whole house, did not hear for anyone so I called in. AHS gave me the contractor's name and number. Called contractor, they said they could not be out until 2:00 to 6:00 the next day (Thursday). I asked if this could be expedited, the dispatcher said they would see if they could push the time up. I took off work the whole day expecting they would get there earlier, due to not having any running water. The contractor showed up at 5:53 pm the next day. Could not fix, heater had to be replaced tech said. They cut both incoming and outgoing lines to heater and capped. Now I have only cold water. Did not hear anything again, had to call next day (Friday). Contractor finally called midday Friday, said my out of pocket expense was $1,230.00. Ask them why so much, I thought AHS was covering parts and labor. Later find out this was for code upgrades only, heater and labor to be covered by AHS.
I called AHS back to complain about out of pocket expense on the so called code upgrades, told them I was very dissatisfied with contractor. AHS rep said that it did seem too high and suggested that they send a more replicable company out, and would send information over to them. AHS gave me the name and number and suggested I call to set up, I did and they could not get there until Monday 9/22/14. Second company showed up about 2:50 pm Monday to looked at hot water heater and said that all the code upgrades I needed was flex line for $289.00. The tech called in to AHS to get approval, AHS agent said since he had the same diagnosis that they would have to give it to the first company. The tech was confused and told me they did not give him approval. I called AHS and tried to find out what was going on and totally got the run around, agent said something about they have the right to pick which contractor will do the work, and that a supervisor would have to review and call me back.
After several hours I called back again, this time no supervisor/manager on duty. Left message on manager's voice mail, and as of this submission I have yet to speak to a supervisor. Also as this submission I still do not have hot water. Have lost two days of work, and spend a lot of money on gas going to and from work 30 miles away, so I can meet contractor within 30 minute window. My question that I cannot seem to get an honest answer to is what is wrong with me using the second contractor for $289.00, what does it matter to AHS, besides they (AHS) were the one who suggested the second contractor be contacted and scheduled?

A couple of months ago, the air conditioner for the first floor of our home stopped working. The summer was just getting hot and we were very concerned about how long the repair would take and how much it would cost. My husband submitted a service request online and received a call within a couple of hours. A contractor was scheduled to come to the house the very next day at a time that was convenient for us. The contractor arrived exactly on time. He was very polite and professional. He carefully inspected the furnace in the attic as well as the unit outside. In less than fifteen minutes from the time the contractor arrived, he had already fixed the issue. I happily paid him the contracted service fee and sat back to enjoy the cool air.

I have found American Home Shield to be very helpful. I made a claim for the air conditioning and when they first called back, they left a message to schedule the appointment and it was like the next week over. We were in that hundred and some degree weather so I called and told them I have heart issues and a bunch of other health issues to where I don't leave the house a whole lot and that it was not acceptable. I could not do that. They put me on hold and then the person was there that evening and fixed the air conditioner. It was some condenser or something that we had had from thunderstorms nights before. It took them all of like eight minutes. They're very quick and very fast. They were great. I've actually suggested them to a couple of other people to look into getting their own.

Worst experience of my life! My family still has no air conditioning. We are burning alive and American Home Shield is the reason! My air conditioning/furnace unit started leaking water, so I called AHS, and they sent out Sun Power Solutions. They advised that they, "Found very dirty evaporator coil, need to call AHS for approval to remove unit and clean..." I thought this was fine, as my contract stated this was covered in Section 2a: "Insufficient maintenance, rust, corrosion, or sediment." I was charged $75 for this little visit that I promptly paid.
AHS contacted me a few days later and said that it was not covered for some reason. After speaking with several rude and disrespectful associates, I was convinced someone to send out another company for a second opinion. The second opinion company came out and advised that there was no way that the first company could have seen the coils at all. Admitting that Sun Power lied and that there was no way they could have made that determination without taking off a panel to see the coils and assessing the problem. Again, I was told that approval was needed to remove the panel. And even after it was proven that the first lied, and fraud was committed, AHS said "well this isn't covered either!"
After some investigation I discovered why "nothing was covered". The reason was because of a point system AHS and their affiliates use. If the company advises AHS that the job is not covered, they get more points, and more point equals more service calls for them and of course $75 each visit. But, if they say that the job will cost a lot of money, that AHS would have to pay, then they get less points, and eventually AHS would not call them for jobs and no $75. A great business strategy for AHS and the companies they send out, well everyone except for the customers.Leaving me still with no working A/C, $75 less in my pocket and still paying the $43 a month! American Home Shield should be ashamed and have the decency to do what right and fix the problem!

I thought it might have been the same thing because it had been less than 90 days since changing the control panel but this was something different. It just started doing it. It wouldn’t hold it but then it would, it wouldn’t show it on the screen but it would hold, then it got to where it wouldn’t work at all.
I put a claim on it and everything went fine as far as with American Home Shield. They got somebody on it right away. Sears came. The only problem is they had to order the part and it was about a week later before they could come back. Then they had the parts sent to me directly and when he put it in, everything worked fine. It took them about 10 minutes to fix the problem and they were on their way. We’ve also had good rapport with the people that came out to our house. Usually, American Home Shield would call a day or two after the service was taken care of to see how things have worked out. They haven’t done that though the last couple of times. I've always had excellent response from American Home Shield. They send out a vendor to take care of whatever the issue is that I've called in. Rarely have I had to wait more than a 24-hour period to have a service tech on the spot and take care of the issues. The majority of the time, when they are here, it's a one-stop deal. They don't have to come see what the problem is, go into town and come back with parts. It's been real convenient that they were able to come to the house, find out what the issue was, take care of it, and be in and out.
I had an issue the year before with the air conditioner and the system froze up. I placed a call and within a very short period, they were out here and fixed it. My wife was the one here. The technician was very pleasant and very knowledgeable. He showed her a few extra things that we needed to do to keep this from happening again. He answered the questions, spent time debriefing us on how to take care of the system and what was going on, what was wrong, and how he was intending on correcting the situation. The repair work was excellent. It's working well. We haven't had any more problems and it hasn't frozen up again since. We’ve also had them out for the pool twice and both times had been good.
My last claim with American Home Shield was regarding the dishwasher. We couldn’t shut the door of the dishwasher. We called AHS, someone came out and found out that there was a rubber flap in the way. They adjusted and fixed it, and now, it works fine. The people that have come have been good. On 9/17 I schedule a Service Request to fix the ice maker on a 2005 Jenn Air refrigerator. On 9/19 I received an email saying that the contractor should have been in touch by now, but they hadn't. After discussing with my wife whether it was worth paying the $75 deductible to a flaky contractor with no guarantee the fix would be covered by the warranty, should we just buy a new refrigerator? We opted for the latter.
I tried to use their website to cancel the Service Request. Upon clicking the Cancel Service link, I was taken to a page that said I had no Service Requests. When I clicked the Return to Home Page button, I was logged out of the website. So, I tried to call. The phone rang, the automated voice system picked up and said its message, then I was transferred to a Service Representative. The phone rang, somebody picked up and I could hear typing, but nobody said anything. When I said "Hello?" I was hung up on. I called back. After finally reaching somebody, they told me that the contractor had tried to reach me on 9/18. We verified information, it was correct, and my phone had not been called nor was there a voicemail.
The Service Requests do not work. The website is malfunctioning. And, the phone system is being used incompetently. What does work? I cancelled the Service Request with the Service Representative (that worked!), and requested that they cancel the warranty and refund the money to the seller of our home. Why should they have had to pay for a service that doesn't do what is advertised? I was given another phone number to call, with no guarantees the seller's money would be refunded. Now I have a choice, keep a service that doesn't work, or cancel it and risk that they keep the seller's money for doing nothing? We'll do the former, begrudgingly. Others should be aware of the problems at AHS before paying for their "service".

They did not even try to see if they could come out that day, he said he would call me the next day, lol, really. So I call AHS, they say, "We will send your service call over to be expedited." Well don't hold your breath, the service call was not expedited and they cancelled the other plumber. So in fact no one was coming and my family was using plastic bags to go to the bathroom. Is that tmi beware!
They get your money upfront and you get second hand service. I don't have peace of mind and that fancy book they give out well it should be burned. It's a marketing strategy. AHS blocked this contractor from ever being able to be dispatched to my home again, however I feel AHS should not be using this company at all. I am happy with the resolution for this claim. My comments are being forwarded for AHS to review this company they sent out.
AHS is offering me the cost of these repairs as a credit towards a new dishwasher. The credit does seem very low, but that is what they said they could do, and I need a dishwasher in working order, so I will order my own dishwasher and have it installed and put the credit towards the new dishwasher.

We have used AHS for 6 years. They have saved us on the replacement of 2 hot water heaters and has done a decent job with plumbing stoppages. Currently we have a dishwasher that isn't working and they sent a company that is incompetent. Upon my gut instinct about this company after their initial visit, I looked them up and they have many complaints, which AHS was notified about and complaints were filed with the BBB and AHS is still sending this company out into homes in the area. This company is dragging their feet, inconveniencing us longer and AHS said they can't really do anything about it. I will not trust to have this company install a new dishwasher based on the screw up jobs they've done in other homes in the area. Of course, I'm just waiting and waiting to hear back from both the contracting company and AHS. Nothing gets done fast with AHS. I am considering looking into other home warranty programs. AHS sending this last company is the last straw!

If you have a claim with this company, it is pure hell to deal with them and the contractors they use. It is a scam from the get go. I had a water heater leaking, took forever for them to respond. First contractor never called me back, got another one and seemed good. But when AHS called and said I would have to pay $862.00 for my part which they didn't cover (pure BS) plus the $75.00 on the service call, I was floored and upset to say the least. After waiting two days to find this out, thanks to the worst customer service (they know nothing just so sorry you feel that way response) I was over a barrel!! If I would have know this the first day or two I would have just went to Home Depot paid $398.00 for the same heater and put it in myself. It would have been less than what my part turned out to be and would not have had to wait.
I did find out after six calls to customer service (customer service that is a joke!) that if you request a cash payment after the service call is sent to them to evaluate, they will come up with some lower cash amount and send you the check. Problem is it takes two to three days to find out how much they will send you. Such a circle jerk with these guys. They and the contractors are in bed together to screw us the homeowners. The contractor told me if I was to call them they would have done all of the work for $1250.00. My part I paid yesterday was $937 including the $75.00 for the deductible. AHS was to pay $640 since the deductible goes to them for a total for this water heater of $1652.00 with my part I had to pay!! Contractors make more with AHS and AHS pays very little on claims plus as other reviews on here state, they will repair items but never replace them.
AHS pays lower claims and makes more money. I wonder if the contractors are doing kickbacks to AHS???? Makes you feel like a fool for signing up for such a pitiful warranty company. They use the Air Conditioner and Furnace going out to scare everyone into signing up since those two items are expensive. I have yet to hear of anyone getting new units replaced by AHS. Repair, Repair, Repair only!! Realtors say the same thing but they push AHS to everyone. They probably make a commission on signing us fools up! It is a crime by taking advantage of trusting homeowners like this. I'm done with them and hope this helps someone from making the mistake of signing up with this bunch. If there is a class action lawsuit against AHS, I will be the first one in line to sign up. Good Luck.

We had an intermittent leak in our toilet for well over a year and finally decided to use the AHS service we've been paying into for over four years. In the first instance, they sent out Plumb Genius of Edmond, OK. Unfortunately, the "technician" was rude, condescending, and refused to do anything except throw caulk around the base of the toilet (His employer was notified of his "lack of service" on this service call).
We had to call AHS again when the leak returned. They sent the same company - we live 20 miles away, and you can't tell me there are no other plumbing contractors within that distance - and this gentleman, although much nicer in attitude, only replaced the wax ring and didn't inspect the toilet or the flange as a possible source of the problem.
Third time, the toilet leaks worse and more often, so here we go again: AHS, Plumb Genius (I sense a pattern here). War breaks out when AHS says that they won't cover the repair of the culprit broken flange because I took matters into my own hands and removed the toilet to discover something that the first two plumbers should have checked for and found! They also said that there would be an additional charge to install the new toilet, which is silly, stupid, and a messed up way to extort more money out of their clients. The person my wife spoke to at customer service was ignorant and sarcastic during their conversation, and when she threatened to cancel the AHS contract, he said "Well, I hope you stay" in a manner my wife described as being snide and overall smartass.
We went ahead and paid the king's ransom to have the flange fixed, but this incident has left us feeling ripped off, angry, and wondering why we paid so much money for the warranty when it serves us no purpose at a time of crisis. We have issues with Plumb Genius of Edmond, too, but I won't digress into that here. We're done with AHS as soon as possible.

When I do have an issue, the people on the phone listen to what I have to say and they tell me who they're going to send and the people that they send call. They don't just show up anytime they want. They call directly. So the support people who work with American Home Shield from my perspective have been very professional. So I would recommend it and I would recommend the garage guys to anybody even if I didn't have American Home Shield. I don't have any complaints.

Our AC unit upstairs stopped working. We called AHS and scheduled an appointment for the next day. The technician arrived on time, diagnosed the problem and fixed it within 20 minutes. He was polite and clean.

Submitting my first claim to American Home Shield was good. I did it online so I had no problems. I wasn't sure on some of the instructions, but once I understood it, it was easy. The contractor was very helpful. He gave us some good pointers because apparently his company does a whole lot of work for American Home Shield and he personally has had a problem himself. He's the one that really truly made me understand how American Home Shield works and reinforced my decision to get the policy. The appliance has worked greatly and I have had no problems out of it. It was a great experience.
Thank you for the feedback Lorenzo!

The non-covered items were many and the charges from the contractor for these items were beyond exorbitant. Most of them were not needed to make the unit work. I did not have a choice in order for them to do the work. The company has an F rating from BBB with many complaints. It is obvious the contractor is attracted to AHS since price gouging is allowed.
