    Claims Handling

My water heater needed some repair. When I submitted a claim to AHS, the process wasn't difficult. Contractor looked at the water heater and said that there was a leak and it needed to be replaced. They scheduled a day and they brought the heater. The only thing I don't like is that they don't replace the same brand. But service-wise, it's good.

Such a terrible experience working with their unqualified contractors. This is my third day of moving my schedule around to accommodate Air Now of Tampa. The first time they came out they assessed the issue, didn't have the parts. No problem. No one called me to set next appointment so I called them. They came out, spent an hour in my home to realize they had the wrong parts. Rescheduled. Half of my day is gone and they can't get here until two hours after my window. Every time I use one of their contractors, I go through an issue, without fail! Terrible service!!!

We had the dryer come looked at because we're having problems with the control switch. Submitting the claim was okay as the AHS reps over the phone were courteous and friendly but it wasn't as quick as we liked to get the service. Instead of getting it within a week, we had to wait a little while for it to be set up. When the gentleman from A&E showed up, he was thorough in his explanation of everything that needs to be done. It hasn't been repaired yet because he had to order the part and we just got the part in yesterday. Now, we have to call A&E again to come back out to put the new part in. We're just fortunate that we had to bang on it a little while just to get it to work until they came, which was a couple of weeks later. For what we're paying a month and then we still have to pay a co-pay, we should be getting a quicker service.

Very unhappy with American Home Shield. I have a plumbing leak and filed a claim. They sent out Service Contractors Plumbing out of Kaufman Texas on 2/19. The plumber got out of his truck and asked where the shut off valve that should be next the house. I could not find it. The plumber offered to find it for $775.00. I told him I would find it myself. He said he could not help me unless I found it and then he left. He was here less than 5 minutes.

I called AHS and was told since he came out even though he did NOTHING I still owed the $125.00 for the service call. I paid $125.00 for a 5 minute discussion with a plumber. In the 2 years that I have used them this is the second time they have sent me a useless Plumber. I have cancelled my service with them. I would reconsider using them if you feel you may need plumbing service. To be fair, I have used them twice for an AC issues and that issues was fixed to my satisfaction. But I can't afford to have plumbing issues and cannot get a plumber who cannot help diagnose the problem.

Worst experience ever. I have a newer washing machine that needs a new control panel. What AHS does when there is an expensive part that is needed is that they make repair person submit detailed paperwork about part, then they use their own vendors to get the parts at the cheapest price they can. The cheaper price often includes the worst shipping possible. If this means it will take weeks to get the part they don't care as is the case with me. I was told by supervisor Humberto ** after I was first aware that part might take weeks to come in that I could call back and have it expedited at my own expense which I said I would be willing to do.

When I called back, after denying that a customer is allowed to do this, they said I couldn't do that since the part was already shipped. I offered to pay to have the slow-mail part returned to them when it came in and for me to pay for shipping on another part that I could have overnighted. Again was told this was not procedure. After asking to be put through to parts department I was told by supervisor Jimmy (badge ** I believe) that he did talk to parts and even though my work order showed an 11 days delivery time that actually I would get the part in 2 days. Jimmy said he would follow this and make sure all was going as he said it would.

As of yesterday not only did my repair person not get the part, nor did Jimmy follow through with me, I got a new email from AHS that my part will now take an additional 4 days to come in (15 days to have a part delivered that could be overnighted)!!! In my experience they do not know what they are doing there. To save money they make repair parts as inconvenient as possible. I would rather pay for a responsible repair person to come out, order a part and repair my appliance in a REASONABLE period of time than ever deal with this company again. As a Real Estate Agent I have recommended AHS to my clients, I will now warn them about it.

We had a problem with our refrigerator so I filed a claim with AHS. It's been straightforward and easy since I got their website bookmarked on the computer. The contractor sent was outstanding, experienced, knew his stuff, and did the job quickly. He defrosted the fridge and reset it, and it's working great again. There's a couple of parts associated with the automatic defrost that need to be replaced so we're still in the middle of the process as we wait for the parts. But as of this point, I'd recommend AHS.

I had no problem sending in a claim for the electrical with American Home Shield in January right after the Christmas holidays. I called the 1-800 number that they gave me, the rep took down the information, assigned me a confirmation number, and told me that the contractor would be contacting me in a few days. The contractor contacted me the next day and set up an appointment time. He was very cordial and knowledgeable, and I like him thoroughly. The guy came out on time, and explained to me what the problem was, which was something very simple. He repaired the electrical, and then showed me that everything worked. I wrote him a check and he left. We haven't had any problems at all since the repair.

When they finally diagnosed the problem I had to pay more than $1,000 extra to have the situation fixed. On complaining with American Home Shield their "Customer NO Service department " offered no help whatsoever. I will not be renewing with this company if they cannot get local help to work on common household problems.

Then I hired somebody else to put in the new ones so I cashed out. On the other hand, the plumbing people were horrible. They visited to get the toilet fixed and it took me 22 phone calls and 5 different texts from one company. It's awful and crap so my toilet still does not work and I'm going to hire my own plumber to fix it.

I've had a contract with AHS for 9 years. My most recent call was for a broken main spring on my garage door opener. I included garage door openers in my contract specifically for this type of problem. The contract states that what is covered is "all components and parts, except door and door track assemblies". The main spring is neither the "door" nor the "door track assembly". It is a separate component that can be purchased separately from the door and replaced. I've had it done before at other houses. This is an expensive component. To exclude it, despite the plain language of the contract, is to effectively gut any value from having the warranty.

I'm 81 years old and I love the security of having American Home Shield. It was my daughter who had used them and recommended that I get it. She loves it because the warranty transfers over to the new home owner when the house is sold. I've been very happy with the three occasions that I've used them in the last several years. I'm not good at using the computer so I submit my claim via telephone. AHS has always been very good in processing my claims and they tell me that somebody's going to telephone back to make the appointment, which they've always done so. They are very courteous and the contractors come out quickly. So far, I've been happy with the contractors that AHS sent out, and had no problems with the things I've had done. My latest claim was for my washing machine because it wouldn't spin. The contractor found out that it was the timer that had an issue. He fixed it and I've had no problem since.

Plumbing contractor sent by AHS was dishonest, told me I needed at least $950 worth of work. He did replace seal at bottom of toilet. Toilet started leaking again within 2 days. Called a private plumber with whom I had dealt for many years. Showed him the estimate of the plumbing company sent by AHS. He said that clearly the problems the other plumbing co. identified did not exist. He was able to replace 2 more parts and repair the toilet for $104. No more leaks. He suggested I contact AHS and describe the unethical practice of the co. they had sent. It took 2 emails on my part before they responded, then they just said they would not send that co. again.

I emailed AHS again and asked "What about my $100 that I paid to repair a leaking toilet that the co. did not repair?" I haven't not heard from AHS again. It seems that they are happy to collect their monthly premium, but not so concerned with the level of service (and/or rip off) that their customers receive from their contractors.

Customer service assured me that credit would be issued since American Home Shield charges his AMEX card monthly. Retention Department is LESS than SERVICE orientated. They refused to help me. Even though the home no longer belongs to my father. My father called in May 2015 to cancel, they are saying he only called to inquire HOW to CANCEL. They are now being extremely unreasonable and insisting that I have to contact a lawyer to document that the home was taken over by the government.

My father is elderly and has been paying the AMEX card to assure that he maintains his good credit. He did not take note that he was still being charged every month $60.83. AMS will not budge or show any compassion or understanding. He has had this account since 2005. Where is the Goodwill to the customer who has been long time account holders. No one has lived there in five years and really the service wasn't even used. I could understand if many claims were made on the policy, but that just has not happened. They are adamant about taking advantage of an elderly gentleman who is not on top of his game. I was willing to split the difference and accept some kind of reimbursement of these overcharges. They ARE BEING UNFAIR!!! Be careful should you have to cancel your policy with AHS.

I have noticed my house does not cool down very well and a few bedrooms you cannot feel the a/c coming out of the vents that good. I called AHS because my warranty covers ductwork. Paid the $75 for someone to come out. The first company was awful and unprofessional. I told them to leave. They went and told AHS that the ductwork had been stepped on/crushed and not to cover the repairs. I told AHS to send out a second company for a second opinion. They did at no cost. The 2nd company said "No this wasn't stepped on." The seals are coming apart and we are losing 40-50% of the a/c into the attic. He says this is definitely covered bc I've did this work before for AHS.

Well I get a call a week later from AHS claiming the 2nd company says it was crushed and so AHS won't cover it. I said "BS. That's not what they told us and that's not what the invoice says." Let alone my husband went into the attic with the tech and the tech showed him where the seals have came apart. The tech NEVER said anything about ductwork being crushed or stepped on. I even called the 2nd company asking why they told AHS that and they said "We never told them that." I personally think AHS just doesn't want to cover the repair. I am extremely annoyed and regret purchasing a warranty through these crooks! I wish I could rate it 0 stars!

But I also call them if something wasn't going right like when one vendor took forever to get the job done. I called to question why it was happening. We also had a problem with a contractor who put in our new electric stove. He was not helpful at all. He just said, "It's wrong." and he left without telling us what was wrong and we had to figure it out ourselves. So I called American Home Shield and told them that a man came in and left without fixing the issue and that he had to come back. The service was awful. Not only AHS but their electrician partner too especially that awful guy. I hope they don't have him anymore.

Generally, they've been so friendly and helpful and they've met our needs. We're very happy. We consider it a great value to have them. I'd rather call AHS instead of submitting a claim by email on the computer. It's a very long wait always, but my interactions with the reps are very good when I'm able to reach one. Most times, the contractors sent to our home are professional and courteous, and if they're not, I complain about it. They never have the same vendors, so if you like somebody and the next time you call and ask for them, they say, "They don't work with us anymore," and I don't like that. In our recent claim, the guy was good and told me he was going to write me a lengthy email about everything he checked in our furnace, and I would have liked to have that. But I had to call them and there was only one sentence in his report, saying everything was in good working order. However, we don't think that our furnace is working properly because we find that it's cold now, whereas it wasn't so before the repair.

I put in service request for our Dishwasher. Water is leaking out of dishwasher when running. The technician came and noticed leak from pipe that feeds water and also from side of the door. AHS called back to me saying my dishwasher is not covered as the issue is not in dishwasher but a plumbing issue and ask me to pay another $100 copay as now it falls into another category. When I questioned that if water is coming out of dishwasher door when the machine is running then how it is a pluming issue and not a dishwasher issue. The diagnosis of the technician is not correct and I requested AHS to contact back the technician to ask clearly if he show water leak from side of the door or not. I also offered my services to take the photo for the leak. I was told by AHS that their technicians are certified technicians and their decision is final and it does not matter what I say.

They agreed to send another technician to diagnose the issue again, but asked me to again pay $100 second time as it will be consider a second visit. How fair it is that I pay every month $50 for having my appliance insurance and when I need service, I have to pay multiple copays because of AHS hired a technician whose diagnosis is not correct!!!

On Friday morning my main sewer line became clogged. I called AHS and they submitted my service request to a local plumbing company and they said the plumbing co. would call and schedule an appointment to clean my sewer line. After several hours I called the plumbing co. The woman at the plumbing co. said that the soonest they could come out would be Monday afternoon sometime. Let's see, from Friday morning until Monday afternoon without using the toilet, taking a shower, using any sink in the house. I told her that was unacceptable and she said "tough" if I didn't like it then call my warranty company.

I called AHS and instead of helping me out of a very severe situation the tech said the best he could do was get the plumbing co. out there in 24 hours and I had to be there. Both me and my wife work on Saturday, so getting results today was imperative. Finally I called and cancelled my service request from AHS and called Mr. Rooter to the rescue. Shame on you American Home Shield, we deserve much better service especially in an emergency situation. I will definitely look into other home warranty companies when it's time to renew.

Look at the reviews. Somehow they remove all of the bad reviews. Very strange. I have been a customer of American Home Shield for a year and a half. The first time I used the service, things went great. The second time was okay. They took a little long to get someone out to fix my dishwasher but it was still okay. Here is my problem I'm having now. In January I called them because I had a problem with my washer and dryer. It took 6 days for Sears to come out. They looked at the washer and ordered a part. They looked at the dryer and said it couldn't be fixed. He told me to replace it and call AHS. I did. AHS said they couldn't do anything until they get the report from Sears.

I bought a new dryer and had the old one picked up. This is where things go REAL BAD!!! AHS refuses to reimburse me for the dryer. I have tried, countless times and I can't talk to anyone. I was told that I need to talk to a supervisor and that one would call me. I never got a call. I have called them 2-3 times a week asking to speak to a supervisor. At one point, someone told me to fax the receipt for reimbursement. I did and never heard anything. I call 3 or 4 times a week and get different answers from different people. 2 weeks ago I ask for the supervisor's number. I was told they don't have it and can't get it for me, I kept calling.

This week one of the operators said I need to speak to a supervisor and gave me her number. I thought I was finally getting somewhere. WRONG!!! I have left messages all week and nobody's call me back. I don't even think there is a supervisor. This company might be fine if something minor breaks, but if you have to replace something, GOOD LUCK!!! You won't be able to talk to anyone. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY!!!

We've had them fix furnaces, replace water heaters, microwaves, fix dishwashers, clothes washers, dryers, toilets, intercom system. All the providers are in the local area, many are the same time after time which makes working with them easier since we both know what to expect. I like the new system online, their prior online system was not user-friendly. We really like working with them, are fully satisfied.

I called the office and left a message and the contractor called me shortly thereafter to say he was already at the house. I asked him to wait since I was about 5 minutes away and he graciously did. He diagnosed the problem within minutes, and while parts had to be ordered and we had to wait over a holiday weekend and into the next week for them to arrive, when they did come, he came right back out and had them installed in short order and we had heat again. He came out on New Year's Eve afternoon, which impressed me as well, for the first call.

The garbage disposal all of a sudden started leaking water. We called American Home Shield and they contacted the plumbing service that came out. They called us and I sent my review. Within 24 hours, they were out. It was very easy to submit the claim. The hardest part for me is to remember where I put the AHS contract to find the number and the contract number.

The contractor that was sent out to our home was fine. I was at work, but my other half had no problems with him. She showed him where the kitchen sink was. He turned it on and verified that it wasn’t working and water was coming out. He went back to his truck, came back in with a garbage disposal, took off the old one and put on the new one. About two days later we ran the dishwasher which goes through the garbage disposal, turn on the garbage disposal and it started leaking water again. So I called the contractor up and they were out the next morning and replaced it again with no charge on that one. It was a defective garbage disposal and they put a new one in and there has been no problem since then. We've been in the house for nine years and when we bought the house, the person we bought it from had Home Shield set up. We've been very satisfied with them. It has paid for itself in the things that we haven’t had to worry about on.

They sent someone who does jetted bathtubs and when I explained to them the problem, they said, "Oh, you need a plumber," so AHS sent me to a plumber. When I talked to the plumber, he explained to me over the phone what was going on, so I didn't have to have him come out. A few months prior, I also had somebody come out to fix our old stove. He showed me some ways to clean things up so that saves me from having to fix something that didn't really need to be fixed. It's still not 100% but it's old and it's definitely workable, and I really appreciate what he did. It was great. AHS and the people that they sent to me, or were going to send to me, were all knowledgeable, polite, and nice.

December 28, 2015 we called to have our washer fixed. It was not balanced, the drum was lopsided. We were dispatched to a company that had poor ratings on YELP. After 4 times the tech coming out to fix our washer, he still could not and basically gave up. Also, he did not reconnect a hose and it ended up flooding our hallway and my son's bedroom. I called and complained to AHS, but no resolution. When the company could not figure out how to fix our washer, we had to call to get another company who was also contracted with AHS to get dispatch to fix this.

The second company fixed problem in 10 minutes. However, now AHS is charging us a second copay because we had to use a second company to come fix this. This is wrong, AHS chose to send a sloppy company and because they couldn't do the job, we are penalized in having to pay a second copay to get it fixed. WRONG. SHAME ON AHS.

Recently, I contacted AHS for refrigerator service. The local service company is in Columbus, Georgia - just across the river from Phenix City AL. They got the parts. (It took a week to get the parts, even though you or I could order them direct from GE with overnight service.) When they had the parts, they brought them out that day, put them in, and cleaned up everything. It was a good job. And the fridge is running great and cooling again.

In addition, everything that had to do with AHS was great, except that on that one particular weekend their website was down and wouldn't let me log in. That meant I had to call. (They should always make sure that their website is up and running, and that somebody actually pays attention on the weekends.) The worst thing was having to deal with the IVR system - but it turned out okay. AHS is a lifesaver if you don't have the hundreds or thousands to spend to have something fixed. As a REALTOR®, I tell my clients, "When you buy a home, you need to get a home warranty. Because, you don't want to spend a lot of money to buy a house, move in, and then two weeks later have your air conditioner go out."

What it failed to indicate all the little items to make changes to fit the changes made in water tanks over the years like the stand, pipes, vents, etc to make it up to code, and instead of a service fee of $75 it cost me $845. Beware of the tricks which AHS charges for incidental parts hitch will cost you a fortune! I would be better off without the warranty!

UPDATED ON 03/01/2016: Plumbing Genius came out to replace my water heater and was quoted $845 as what I had to pay for non-covered parts. The only time they've had to come back is when they've had to order parts, but never because something they fixed didn't get fixed right.

Submitting the claim, for the most part, is a routine. They ask the problem, I explain and they say they're going to send somebody. They'll call so I'll know when they'll be here. My family has used AHS for several properties. In several experiences, it has taken several weeks to get resolution and in the case of a stove that got replaced it took from Dec 15 to mid February and they replaced a high end Thermador with a GE which although it had the same features, was a different size. So we had to have the granite cut to accommodate it and had to have a new electrical wire run because it used a different type, costing us hundreds of dollars extra. We also had a problem with the heater, the first person they sent out (a week after the problem was put in) actually broke the system, he drained it and didn't know how to program it.

The next day we discovered that the heat now didn't work anywhere in the whole house (from one zone only before). The person they sent to fix that, was clueless what the problem was and tried to bleed vents but really didn't even know how to do that. The house was 30 degrees, we had to kick him out and bring in a local contractor we have used on the heater, so much damage was done by the previous two contractors, it cost us almost $600 to repair their mess. AHS refused to pay, they have their process and no heat didn't mean anything to them. I have yet to call in and get anything fixed within two weeks of notification (they send out to AHS for all parts they need) and the quality of the work done leaves much to be desired. They all leave a mess and don't clean up after themselves. Not a quality program.

That was strike one and it raised a red flag. I should have told her not to worry about it then and asked for another company but instead I said "schedule me for today 2/22/16 and please call when the tech was on his way."

So, the tech gets here... it takes him less than a minute to look at my garbage disposal to state the obvious that it's definitely a leak and that it's not turning properly. Then he states I need to contact AHS to see if it's covered but I will need to collect the $75 service fee prior to. He proceeds to his truck and contacts them to say that a foreign object caused the leak. How does he know that without taking it apart and pulling that foreign object out? He comes back in, hands me his business card with the estimate of his cost to fix it, and said AHS will be contacting me. If my issue is not rectified today 2/23/26 I will be cancelling AHS ASAP.

    Original Review: Feb. 22, 2016

We have a 3-5 year old Whirlpool washer that malfunctioned on 12/17/2015. We requested service from AHS on 12/18/2015 as we are a subscribed member. AHS assigned a service provider GKB trying to fix the washer and it has been over 2 month now (2/22/16). Their technicians came 5 times. Each time replaced some parts and could not get it to work. About 2 weeks ago, the last technician who came told me they could not fix it and it leaves to AHS to decide what to do.

I called AHS 4 times since the last service and each time AHS said they are waiting for GKB technician to call in to confirm. In the meantime I am out of a washer and have been taking to the laundry services to have my clothes cleaned. We paid about $20 every week. Nobody in the AHS seemed to care of our situation and the urgency. As of today 2/22/16, no word from AHS yet and the washer is still broken. We had good service from AHS before but this time it is unacceptable. GKB is dragging down AHS reputation and AHS did not know how to handle the situation. We are extremely disappointed in AHS.

After being a 13+ year customer of AHS we canceled. If one has small claims ($100.00) AHS will pay those. Have a large claim and they ignore written assessments of their Contractor and deny claims they base on verbal assessments their own contractor has documented otherwise!!!

We had them come out at least three times now, and every time they come out they've just been exceptional. So I'm real pleased. It's amazing and there's not ever been a hassle. They would be there after a couple of days, as quick as they could. They've always been excellent people. There was also an electrician that would come out if we ever had to have electrical work done on the house, and that person would be the one I'd call to come back out if I'd do some independent work and he wasn't under contract with them.

I recently got screwed by American Home Shield (AHS), Kan at First Time HVAC in OKC, Carlos at All About Comfort HVAC in OKC. I have had a home warranty contract through AHS and my 24 yr old A/C died and needs replacement. I have invested over $12,000 over the years with AHS and only had minor repairs done and AHS reps have recharged and repaired this same unit without comment about exterior blemishes or the normal wear and tear. Kan at First Time came and made no attempt at repair and just reported to AHS that there was damage and it was NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR (AHS contract language) and they voided their contract obligations.

On appeal, Carlos with All About did not even remove the cover or look in the unit. He wrote that it was damaged and NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR on a 24 year old A/C. I hired a HVAC company and they came, charged the system and the house cooled down. He agreed the unit was in need of replacement in the near future due to NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR of a 24 yr old A/C. I would not count on AHS for anything over $200 in repairs because they apparently instruct their reps like First Time and All About to write opinions in the words of their contracts which voids the customers rights. I would not let Kan or Carlos in my home and you should not either. In my opinion, none of these companies are honorable or Christian as advertised, and neither are their technicians. BEWARE OF AHS, First Time and All About Comfort in Oklahoma City.

I own a rental house, it's a family home that I inherited three years ago which always had a maintenance company and they were good. However, they don't fix plumbing issues and I wanted a complete possible coverage on the house so I thought of getting another company. When I had flown to California last year, I was talking to this lady and she told me she had had American Home Shield for years and was very happy with it. That was the confirmation that I needed so I got double coverage for a year.

Then when there was a problem with the garbage disposal, the other company refused to fix it but American Home Shield came out and put in a brand new garbage disposal that cost me $75. I immediately came home. I was so impressed and cancelled the my other company. I've read the American Home Shield contract, it's eight pages and they cover so much so I thought they were my new company.

Last week, the tenants kept calling me to tell me that the temperature kept dropping for no reason. They've lived in the house for three years and were great tenants so I wanted the issue to be resolved. I explained this to the company that was sent out but the first person who came for it got the $75 and went on his way. When I called him he stood by his diagnosis of there was nothing wrong. I told him this never happened in the history of the house and he started saying that he didn't tell the tenants but there's some issues with that furnace. He basically shut me down as far as there might be some serious problem that could kill them in their sleep. I called the company back but they were literally just sending me messages and pictures of the thermostat. So it was not resolved and for me, last week was marred by the experience.

So I called back the contractor, United Temperature, and the lady was very sympathetic. The second person they sent out was much more knowledgeable according to the tenants but said the same thing, didn't fix it and left. However, he said to them that it's not normal for the thermostat to drop more than one degree and that if it happened again to immediately go downstairs and videotape some potential flashing lights on the furnace and then call the company back so they could send somebody else out.

It was very unsatisfactory because they got my $75 and by this time I'm thinking I've wasted $75. It also ruined my week so based on this mixed up mess, I immediately called the old contractor back and said I want to cover the heating and air because they're more complex systems and more expensive and paid $120 to cover that. And now that I cancelled originally, it doesn't take effect for 30 days so I'm not happy. But I am still going to call back American Home Shield when my voice comes back to me and talk to them again about it because I'm real disappointed.

I love having American Home Shield because they've helped me several times. I appreciate the service. However, it takes longer to get somebody out here and when we're out of heat and it's cold, we don't want to wait. Finding people in our area is part of the problem because it's a rural area. We have two or three contractors in our little bitty town that service things but for some reason they're not on AHS list. Also, AHS sends a different contractor every time. I don't want to do without American Home Shield but I do wish that they have a better network of people that they could send.

When my heating went out, I tried to get AHS to get a contractor in my county but they were backed up due to the weather so AHS had to get someone from Carson, Mississippi to come out. The contractor was very nice. He came and wired the heating where he thought it didn't work. I ordered a part but it never came back for a month. Then the contractor came back and fixed the problem so I have heating now. I'd recommend them regardless. If you ever need something done, they fix it eventually.

We're in the middle of a claim. I had two toilets that gave me issues at the same time. One of them wouldn't flush all the way and the other one is leaking around the base. Within a day or so, which was fine with me, the plumber called and made an appointment. He came out and said he fixed the one that wouldn't flush. And the other one he said that he needed the wax seal. It needs to go under and he just used his last one. That was a week and a half ago. He said that they will be in touch with us in a couple of days and come back and finish the job. I haven't heard from him. The one he said he fixed, as soon as he left, I put some paper in it and flushed, but the paper didn't go all the way down. So the repairs aren't finished yet. One toilet is not working at all and the other one's leaking. And since we have five people in the house, it's inconvenient. I wish the contractor wouldn't wait so long to get back with it.

But overall I'm happy with American Home Shield's program. The first time I put in the claim on the computer but they don't give you a chance to spell out what the problem is. It was very limited information. Then before they came, we had the problem with the second toilet, so I called them, and they added the information. I would rate that telephone call part as excellent. The computer part needs a little bit of work, though. The contractor they sent was friendly and even though he didn't finish the job, had a good attitude. I was extremely happy with him.

Wrong again. I was told 24-48 hours more. Then when I asked to speak to a manager, I was told 24-48 hours. There's no one that can help!! I was told I had to contact the contractor myself to get the buyout price. The same company that hasn't called since December or answered their phones!

Hello what has AHS been doing since December? Grant it I'm mad but still apologizing for my tone (why I don't know) that CS is getting the brunt of my anger! But enough is enough, so what does she do. Hang up on me! Yeah that helps. I then call back and get placed on hold for 41 minutes, sorry I exaggerate 40m and 57 seconds to be told from Valerie in Tenn. that they called the company for me and it will be 24-48 hours. Obviously no one else had done this step, but do I believe her? I will wait the 24-48 hours, LOL. I called AHS and asked for a different contractor and they assigned me a new one. This contractor did call and after standing me up for the first appointment showed up for the second one. He said that I needed a new unit and placed a call to AHS to order one. On Thursday, 11 Feb (one month with no ice-maker) he called and said that he would be by on Saturday the 13th to install the new unit.

Needless to say I was stood up again after rearranging my schedule to be home on Saturday morning. After contact with the contractor I was told that he would be out this morning guaranteed. Yep, you guessed it. I was stood up again. I called into AHS to complain and after they called the contractor I was told that they would try to get back with me today to set up the install. I asked the woman on the phone if I could file a complaint against the contractor and she did not have an answer for me. I asked her what date the part arrived at the contractors and was told that it arrived on 01 Feb.

That means that they had it eleven days before they even contacted me. Not cool. Why does AHS allow contractors to treat their customers poorly and then do nothing about it? Where is the oversight. AHS needs to have a plan in place to allow customers to perhaps rate the contractors. Even though the woman on the phone at AHS was pleasant she did not seem to care about my treatment. This was a terrible experience for me (and it is not even done yet) and I have no plans on continuing with AHS.

Very shortly, I receive a call from the repairman. They also ask questions, schedule an immediate appointment and are always on time. They check out the problem, call AHS while they are at my residence and get confirmation that they can do the repair or replacement. Then they schedule the next appointment (which is usually the very next day, if they don't already have spare parts with them). Turnaround time is fantastic. I have recommended AHS to many of my friends. Being a real estate broker, it is nice to suggest AHS to prospective homeowners and tell them that I use this company and am highly satisfied.

The light went out on my fan in the kitchen and it's the light that I needed desperately. So I went online with American Home Shield and checked on the part where it says electrical problem. Immediately I got feedback telling me who would be calling me. Then shortly, I was called by the company to set up the appointment. The contractor they sent from Central Electric was very nice, polite, prompt and professional. He came to see if he could replace the light but there was no fixture that he could get to go with the fan. So he had to look for and add a new fan with another light. He was not just a handyman, he was also an electrician. He cleaned up after himself, took all the junk out and left me the little brochure of the new fan. Everything was all done within three days. I like the new fan and light better than what I had. It's been perfect.

I'm very impressed with the customer service on both American Home Shield and the contractor they sent to fix our outdoor Ac units, Myers Comfort Specialists. They've all been very easy to deal with, straightforward in giving communication and effective in getting the work done, instead of giving me the runaround and trying to stall on getting stuff done which is a typical experience with insurance companies. Also, American Home Shield sent somebody out quickly without much hassle and their reps didn't keep me on the phone too long, which is great because sometimes it takes an hour or two on the phone dealing with a lot of issues. They've given me peace of mind knowing it's going to get done and not having to worry about it.

We've had three claims to American Home Shield and the most recent one was because of a heater problem. Making an initial contact with them is not always the quickest - it takes several days. But once the contractor contacts us, we can get it set up and the claim is addressed quickly. In the case of our heater, submitting the claim was great. But it took a few days for somebody to get back to us. When the serviceman from the contracted company came out, he was very polite and neat and the repair was made the day after that. That was a good experience, though, and there were no problems after the repairs were made. Overall, I've recommended AHS to several people.

My most recent claim with American Home Shield was with my heating and air conditioning unit. I'm not happy with it right now because the contractor they sent a month ago doesn't seem to know much about the unit. He told me I needed a new compressor so he ordered one, gets it and puts it in the following Thursday. After a week, the unit quits heating again. He comes again and tells me I've got tiny holes in the evaporator core and that he's going to get it but he had to order them. He didn't have much knowledge as I would hope when we first diagnosed the problem. Had I been in that situation, I'd make sure the entire system was right before I prompt R-22 and charged my customer $550 for something that evaporated within a week.

When I called the AHS customer service yesterday, their system was down and the girl wouldn't let me speak to a supervisor because she said they were trying to get the system back up. They didn't even offer to call me back. Then I called the contractor last night to follow up and found out that he ordered them yesterday but it's gonna be another five days before they come in but didn't bother to let me know. So it seems like I'm getting bits and pieces service and it's been almost a month now in the middle of the winter. So far, I got a fireplace with a blower to keep the house warm. It's running on strips which of course is not cost effective. I'm happy with things in the past - the ice maker dispenser, the garage door but I'm very dissatisfied with this experience.

The telephone operators were always most helpful and accommodating. I filed a claim for my heater and the first company AHS sent out didn't have the right tools. We then got a second opinion. The other one came out and diagnosed it with my help because I told him what the first guy said. But they had to get parts from Sacramento. I was without heat for over a week which was disconcerting. It was very slow. Once the parts came, the guy came out and replaced the parts in over an hour or two. My heater has been working ever since.

Both gentlemen that AHS sent out were very nice and courteous. Calling the second guy to do the second opinion, I could not reach him all the time because his phone went always to voicemail. Also, my objection is when these contractors are with the low bidder and they're probably not the best in town. I have a regular service that comes out twice a year to clean the air conditioning and the heater, and I wish I had been able to call them but I can't because they are not contracted with AHS.

I reached customer service and was on the phone for over an 1/2 hour while the customer service representative tried to address my issue. Facts: Contractor scheduled to be here between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. today. At 11:36 a.m. I called company and left voice message asking if someone was on the way. At 12:22 p.m. I call a second time and reach the owner. His explanation was that he must have given the technician the wrong address and would call the technician, find out what happened, and call me back. (Now I said to myself, from 8 a.m. to 12:22 p.m. the technician never figured out he had a address that he could not locate). Not buying the explanation. The owner never calls back and at 1:34 p.m. I called again and got the answering machine. Still no response as of 2:30 p.m from the owner.

AHS Representative - I call AHS and request that I be given a new contractor and explain the facts as stated above. While I am on hold, AHS calls the contractor to get their side of the story, and to no surprise, AHS gets the voice message also. I am advised by AHS that a new contractor can NOT be assigned and that the current contractor has until the end of the day to service my HVAC.

So AHS is in essence stating that customer is responsible to make themselves available for the entire day while waiting for the service technician to arrive. The fact that I questioned the integrity of the service to be provided based on what happen up to this point did not change the fact that as a customer, I am still responsible to allow them to service my HVAC should they arrive by the end of the day. Positive News. The AHS representative Tonya was pleasant and polite on the phone when delivering the unrealistic position of AHS.

They have taken care of everything that I needed servicing. When they couldn't make it right away, they let me know and we set up a time that would work for both of us.

My son had the same insurance, except with another company. His dryer broke down one time and since I work in electronics, he called me. It just so happens that I had a dryer just like it and it broke down right before that. So I told him what to look for, because I still have the manual on mine. The part he needed costs around $90. My son told me that the rate for the service call for his insurance company was higher than the price of the part. Hence I told him that he ought to get AHS so he could get them to fix the dryer and their service costs only $75. In the end, he was able to order the part and fix it himself with my help over the phone.

Most people write positive review of AHS if they've never had a claim or only tiny claims ($100). If you ever have a larger claim (replacement of an appliance, HVAC, etc), be VERY CAREFUL. You have ZERO choice of contractor or brand of appliance - furnace in my case. The contractor selected was not prompt and showed up very unprofessionally. Called to see what my options were and was told getting cash at their discretion was the only alternative. I asked for a second opinion and when they confirmed, I asked AHS to use the second contractor - was told not possible.

Contractor wanted me to pay $1,000 for "code upgrades", which I'm finding out was more than the furnace cost. My work was completed yesterday and I had someone come in and check it out. Horrible work, not up to code, and items they said they were going to fix they didn't. Can't get a response from AHS, they put me on hold and do not answer. I've spent MANY HOURS and get nowhere. Just cancelled my check, hope they don't cash it today. I'll be cancelling AHS ASAP.

Since the tech had not provided a diagnosis to replace the fridge, AHS sent out a technician from a different vendor. He said the compressor needed to be replaced and now the fridge also has a leak. AHS then passed the work back to Sears to fix something they have already looked at 5 times. I contacted AHS customer service and multiple occasions and I either am told to work it out with Sears or I am put on hold and eventually hang up. AHS is obviously trying to avoid their responsibility to properly repair or replace the fridge, hoping that we just give up out of frustration. AHS lacks integrity.

So still believing I contacted AHS and while the person on the phone was very nice there seemed that there was no concern whatsoever about our issue, she again quoted the 24-hour clause in the contract and never once made reference to bumping up the priority. I then cancelled the service call in disgust. We will get someone that can make it today, what would happen if it was lights or the refrigerator??? Or a life and safety issue? In Jacksonville, the refrigerator that came with the house stopped cooling. One call to AHS and they arranged service man to come out. Paid a one-time service fee and then let the AHS work with service man. Long story short, I got a replacement refrigerator and am very happy with service and AHS.

Then my cook top/oven combination started to come on by itself and that was very unsettling, because I couldn't make it stay turned off. Again, one call to AHS and it was like deja vu. The only input I needed to contribute was was the service fee. When service man said that cook top/oven had to be replaced, I called AHS and said I'd like to have gas rather than electric. AHS explained to me what I had to do and now I'm happily cooking with gas. AHS makes it easy. Monthly payments are an option and the service is great! Service person shows as I'm advised of time and date and AHS helps me with any issue that may occur. Why worry? Just get AHS and get spoiled.

I called AHS and told them that I needed work for my furnace. It took a while to get somebody because they are getting more automated which made the process more difficult. They are getting further away from human contact which is more inconvenient and unpleasant. It took three visits and a long time for the part to come in. It was in the coldest part of the year, so it was very awkward that way. Luckily, I had this couple of infrared heaters keeping my house fairly warm. Finally the part came and the contractor put it in. The contractors were very nice and worked together to figure out how to do the repair but the furnace was still making funny noises afterwards. One night I called AHS because the furnace made loud noises a couple of times which woke me up. They kept saying that it's just a part of the furnace that they cover which made me think that AHS might not have fixed the problem. That wasn't so good.

It's been a little bit frustrating because the guys that installed it did their best, were nice, professional and they figured the problem out but the furnace works differently than it used to and I don't know how that's going to affect my electric bill. It has to get really cold and below the temperature for the furnace to turn on and dispense heat. It's warm enough but it doesn't dispense heat to the ends of the house very often so it's a few degrees cooler at the ends of the house than it is in the center. However, I would still refer a friend because AHS was helpful. The repair would have been way more expensive without AHS and the problem would have to be fixed without the insurance.

My heater wasn't working and I called it in with American Home Shield. The first lady I talked to on the phone forgot to give me a contractor's name and did not get my name and contact number. I never heard from her. So I called them back the next day, and I got a work order number. They got a contractor and the contractor contacted me. The contractor came out, worked on it and got the job done. He went right to what it was causing it and it took him less than 30 minutes to do everything. I had another contractor who came before but had to come out three times because they didn't know what they were doing. Since the repair, everything was excellent. I'm satisfied with American Home Shield.

Calling in claims for our washer and microwave wasn't difficult and the AHS contractors were fine. The one problem was the first guy that came out ordered a bunch of parts which were delivered to the house. And then the second guy that came out looked at it and said, “This just has to be replaced. We can’t even use all these.” So what it did is it delayed everything. Getting it taken care of, once that determination was made, was not a problem. Everything's running pretty smoothly now. But it would’ve been nice if the first contractor had gotten it right. The parts were in two giant boxes and three small boxes, all sitting in our garage, so they were space-consuming as well.

We had a drain backup on a Saturday but AHS was unable to find a plumber. I thought the problem could wait until Monday but the problem went crazy on Sunday and I ended up calling a plumber on my own. The plumber that AHS scheduled showed up on Tuesday and by that time we had the issue resolved. I was thinking that AHS would reimburse me but they did not. It turns out that AHS don't do drainage backups. It was written in what they cover and what they don't cover. American Home Shield needs to get some plumbers who come on the weekends for things that they do cover.

Not responsive to emergencies (my experience was a water heater bursting on a Saturday morning). 5 inquiries in 24 hours to find out the status of my "emergency" service request lead me to just handling the situation by myself. Lowe's and Home Depot can install a water heater the same day if you order by noon. Save your money unless it comes with the purchase of a home or you don't plan on using it when emergencies happen. You can save the money and save it for when you have emergencies or when your appliances fail.

They were knowledgeable and friendly, but they were not very supportive. Also, I’ve had contact with four contractors and I didn’t really care for them particularly because they were not really trying to help repair the situation. They were overpriced for what they do, and I felt like they were working for AHS instead of really trying to work to get the customer issue resolved. If I had hired a contractor on my own, it would be different and my interaction with the contractors would be more personable. They need to make some improvements, so I’m not likely to refer them.

Submitting it was fine but the whole process was a complete disaster all because the company said that they were going to waive my deductible, and then the first contractor that came out wanted to charge me. Then another contractor came out and they had trouble with the paperwork. The problem was a miscommunication between the repair place and their technician, they're not sending the right information. Eventually, I got the stove fixed, but my first claim was a whole dragged out process - it took way over a month. Nevertheless, when they fixed the stove, the repair was good. I'm still with AHS because I like their program. It's a good program and the price is right. I would recommend them.

One item on my bill was a Flue pipe replacement billed at 450 dollars. When I inspected the install I noted that only a 16 inch piece of flue was installed. I spoke with "Kenny" at A-US Air and was told that 450 dollars is a flat rate charge for any length of flue and AHS approved the rate charge. 450 dollars for a 16 inch piece of flue pipe is Gouging. They can't make money on marking up the equipment as it is furnished by AHS and they must not be happy with the installation labor provided by AHS so I have to get "burned". It is not right and people should be aware of it.

I have been with AHS for about two years now. When I purchased my home the warranty was already purchased, so when it expired I didn't think about it I just registered again because I hadn't had a problem yet. Well I guess I should have read the fine print. Recently I requested service to have the hot water nozzle fixed in my child's bedroom. This was in October, it is now February and I still only have one working shower in my home. The company assigned to repair my plumbing was Rite-a-way plumbing. I have taken off work several times since my initial appointment and the company never showed or even called to cancel. They kept giving me the runaround.

I called American Home Shield to see if I can switch the company because of their poor customer service, and was also given the runaround from the warranty company as well saying that I can't have another company because parts were other (that were never installed) but since they were on order I had to stick with the company. I also asked if this is how AHS does business. This has been an issue since OCTOBER with no resolution and was also told that because they have made contact with me I can't cancel the request because it's still in a 60 day time frame. There were a lot of issues here.

Needless to say that I STILL have no shower and will have to pay an outside source, so what's the point of having a home warranty? Oh, and even better I can't even get the money back for a service that I never received. So thank you to Rite-A-Way plumbing, and an even bigger thank you to American Home Shield for nothing. I am going to cancel my policy with this company. Anyone willing to associate with a third party company that take your money and not complete a service, I don't want any dealings with!

Once they got to the final correction, there were three different things that arose. The contractor was able to solve the problem and it's been perfect since the repair. We've had American Home Shield for a number of years - when we moved from the suburbs to our apartment in Chicago where we bought an apartment a little over a year ago. My furnace went out on Wednesday. I called American Home Shield and the tech came out and declared that he had repaired the furnace. On Thursday night, the furnace stopped working again. I called and the tech came out again. This time declaring that he needed to order a part. He also stated that the furnace part would not arrive until Monday. I protested however was told that was the best he could do. I called AHS and was told that because the part was on order, I had no recourse but to wait for the repair no matter how long it takes. Keep in mind that I live in Chicago and this is the last week of January.

On Monday, the tech returned with the part. He attempted to repair the furnace and I was informed that yet another part was needed and I had to wait for this new part to arrive. This time I was not given a time as to when to expect him to return. I called AHS and complained that I had been without heat in my home for going on 5 days now. If the furnace could not be repaired in a reasonable amount of time, a new furnace should be provided. In the least, I should be provided money for a hotel while waiting for the repairs. AHS agreed to give me $100 for purchase of a space heater.

On Tuesday, I called the tech for an update on the part and to get an idea of when the repairs could resume. The tech told me that the part was not in and that he would let me know as soon as it comes in. At this point, I was frustrated and cold!!! I called another company and had them to install a new unit. AHS should be ashamed. I went from Thursday to Wednesday, almost a week in Chicago with no heat!!! Unbelievable.

I had no problems with any of them except for one guy on the refrigerator. He was nasty. He said it was my fault because there was dust on the vent that blew. He walked to my door rudely, asked what my issue was, and told me it was not his problem, it was the way my house was built. Did not bring the proper equipment to look at my unit so he did not check it, walked out to his van, and drove off never saying a word to me. I canceled the warranty as I was very upset and now a few weeks later I'm getting charged a trade service fee for a technician who came out to not perform service or diagnose my problem as that is the definition of a trade service fee. My microwave stopped heating food, and American Home Shield referred this one company that sent out two clowns who didn't know squat. I was not impressed at all. They said they needed to replace the magnetron. It took two weeks for the company to get in touch with me and I complained to American Home Shield. I looked at reviews online and everybody complained about the same thing. They never got back to them. When they showed up, they popped in for five minutes, put a cup of water in and said, "Oh yeah, it's the magnetron." Supposedly ordered a magnetron. A couple of weeks later, they came and replaced it. It worked for a couple of days and then it wasn't working again.

I called American Home Shield and they said we should call the contractor. I said I called them twice and left messages but they haven't gotten back to me. Because American Home Shield had sent me a bill for $75, because these guys had no way of accepting a credit card. American Home Shield finally said they'll replace the microwave and so they replaced it with a brand new one. The company that came out did it in 20 minutes. Everything was good and set.

I’d recommend AHS. I've had a couple of claims like the garbage disposal and thermostat for my A/C and heat, and they were handled fine. Although the hold times on the phone were quite long, and I understand they're busy and that's fine, the companies sent were very professional, quick, and efficient. It's just the appliance company that was appalling. The communication skills leave a lot to be desired.

He always came after hours - as if this was not his primary job. They found the same cooktop and replaced it within a reasonable amount of time. That cooktop stopped working within 2 weeks, so we submitted another repair request before Christmas. It's been 5 weeks and they either can't find the model number (they have had that on file for a long time), or can't seem to get a part which has been on order for 2 weeks. We've had to call them several times for updates.

The repairman usually doesn't update us either. So we've had to call him several times for updates. The latest as of today is that the part came but was damaged. They have to find another vendor and order again. They tell us "give us 3 days to find another vendor". They have offered to replace our stovetop, however; their offer was for a low end Sears model. Our Jenn-Air is a high end model. Not acceptable.

When I purchased an American Home Shield (AHS) warranty in 2015 I was told that repairs and/or replacement requests were very simple transactions. I was concerned that in the event of an appliance breakdown the warranty company would require me to jump through hoops in order to obtain coverage. I was assured that this was not the case and that when/if an appliance was broken, it would be quickly covered without me having to put up a fight. Unfortunately, I took them at their word and choose to purchase a policy. Big mistake!

Several months ago my refrigerator malfunctioned. After the initial $75 visit I have sat on the phone with 3 different AHS associates for 30-60 minutes each time trying to resolve my issue. The associates have been absolutely no help. They seem to all be very young with very little education and no knowledge of problem resolution techniques. After 3 calls I'm exactly no further than when I submitted my initial request. On the latest call, I asked to speak with a supervisor and the associate refused to elevate informing me that it was against policy. She told me that a request for a supervisor to reach out would be submitted and that I should expect a call within 24 hours. Well, big surprise, that call never came. I'm cancelling this policy. Buyer beware!!!

I submitted a request to have my dishwasher repaired 11/16/2015. Had a contractor come out from Sears and verified that I needed a replacement part. Part came in and contractor came out. The part did not fit. Contractor then ordered the part two more times only to find that the part was discontinued and I would need a new unit. So after taking off of work 4 times to meet the contractor I still had a broken dishwasher which was pulled out into the middle of my kitchen. Having a 12-month-old this is not ideal because of all of the wires and pieces that were hanging out of the sides. It is now 2/2/2016 and after numerous phone calls I was told that I would get a new unit or money to purchase a replacement.

When I called today I was told they would get down to the bottom of this and call me back, instead they just requested that a different company come out and try to repair it so I have to start the process all over again when they already received confirmation from Sears that this unit could not be repaired. This is unacceptable. The amount of time I have spent taking off of work and the hours I have spent on the phone has been a complete headache. At this point I would have come out better to just have purchased a new unit myself. AHS is quick to call a contractor out to fix repairs but stalls in all ways possible when it comes to replacing a unit. Just called again for the third time today before submitting this review. Was just told AHS can send as many people as they feel necessary before replacing a part. How is that justified?
