There was a leak in the ceiling under the second floor bathroom. I called AHS and I was on hold for over an hour. I was trying for over a week and it kept saying the wait was a minimum of one hour. I didn't have that kind of time, but then I finally called at this weird time and the wait time was for 30 minutes. An hour and 15 minutes later, I finally got some guy on the phone and he told me that the claim isn't covered and they were going to have to send me to some place else. I said I was not waiting and they needed to check that the claim is covered since I've had something like this happen a couple of years ago wherein the plumber took three months to fix the problem.
I finally got a hold of a young guy, who was very nice, but he knew the claim wasn't covered and I knew it was. He said he'd put me on hold and check on this. I said he better call me back if we get disconnected because it happened before too. He came back and said the claim is covered. So he said they'd get somebody right out and they did. The new plumbers they got were out of Kentucky and they were lovely. It took them two trips and got the leak fixed. However, they left two holes in my ceiling. I called AHS and two weeks went by and I got an email saying they were offering me $100 to settle the claim and I can find somebody myself to fix the holes. I declined. I don't know who fix these stuff and I know $100 isn't going to cover it. Just a couple of days ago I got another email saying they are going to offer $150 to patch the holes on the ceiling. I declined, and now I've heard nothing since.
I kind of went through the same thing before. After my experience with the plumber that took three months to fix a leak, I also needed the ceiling fixed. I was offered a check by AHS and I said, "No, you find a contractor." They did and the contractor was lovely. But I was chatting with him about my experience and he said he'll never work for AHS again. Needless to say, he's not been contacted to fix my ceiling now. I don't have an hour to sit on the phone on hold. Even the guy who keeps emailing me offering a check doesn't give any response, and it's very frustrating.

We bought our first house back in May of 2017. The seller was required to purchase a home warranty for the first year, of our choosing. We choose American Home Shield because it seemed to cover everything! Just recently, on 9/17/2017, our water heater went out. AHS dispatched a local plumber to come see what he could do. He quickly told us we needed to replace it, which we were fine with since that equipment was covered by warranty.
They do not cover any type of electrical wiring that has to be done when replacing water heaters, and if your current water heater storage is too small, you have to pay out of pocket to redo your door frame. I am fine with all of that, but the plumber (from Extreme Hydro-Jetting and Pipe Inspection) wrote us up a work order that was comparable to highway robbery. He is trying to charge us $150 for the pan! We can purchase one of those at Home Depot for $30. He is making us pay $910 total to have my "covered" water heater installed! I called around for some second opinions, and every plumber I talked to said that was outrageous.
A week goes by...and no call from the plumber or AHS. I call AHS, and after being on hold for over an HOUR, I finally got to talk to one of the rudest customer service reps I have ever encountered. He calls the plumber, and says "Sorry they are not picking up, and their voicemail is full...there is nothing else I can do." I asked about the possibility of having a different plumbing company come out to do it, and he said that NO that was NOT an option. My only other option would be to "cash out." That is where they give you cash instead of have someone do it all for you. I asked if there was any way to find out how much that would be, and he said I might find out in 1-2 weeks. 1-2 WEEKS!? My family has to go without hot water for 1-2 more weeks!? I asked him if I should be expecting a call from them, and he said yes...eventually.
After hanging up, I realized I should have asked to talk to his manager. I called back, and after being on hold for another 30 minutes, the phone system said "Sorry we cannot process your call." Now I am here, writing this review, and I will find every other website I can write a review. This has been the most upsetting experience, and the worst customer service I have ever experienced. DO NOT USE AMERICAN HOME SHIELD.

We have been customers of American Home Shield for quite some time. We recently had issues with air conditioning and were totally ripped off by the contractor who said AHS denied our claim. The problem had to be solved, so we had to pay the contractor over $350.00 - plus the $125.00 service charge to AHS. Over $500.00! Trying to get answers from contractor AND AHS (for over 3 weeks) has been fruitless - as they both say they will call us back time and time again - no one has called or tried to straighten out the problem. Why spend a monthly fee for a service that leaves you high and dry. We will be canceling and reporting AHS and the contractor (Cool Experts) to BBB.

This is the worst company starting with when you call them you are on hold for over an hour but if you want to buy one they answer on the second ring. Does that tell you something. They hire the worst contractors and I have had so many problems with the people they send out as they can't fix anything. This late one was my Fridge freezer would not cool down. They sent out 2 different companies and they could not fix it.
I had them get ahold of one I used in the past and the man that came out knew what the problem was in 3 minutes as the freezer was iced up and he said I need a new defroster rod and guess what he fixed it. The first company that came out said the reason it was not cooling was the coils were dirty and charged me $300.00 and it did not fix the problem then he came out again and said it's not cooling because it was HOT outside. AHS is only after one thing and that is taking your money. AHS 855-210-9538 and good luck if you call. Thanks for listening.

I manage some properties for tenants and the latest claim I submitted with American Home Shield was a couple of electrical issues with some outlets and a couple of ceiling fans. I called AHS to do that and it was very easy. The interaction with the rep was anything that anyone would expect. They said they'd have someone help me and they did. They were pleasant and it was a positive experience. My tenant was there for the contractor but the job got fixed and everything is working fine now.
One of my clients had some difficult experience with the AC unit since there were some limitations to the warranty which were spelled out in the contract but it's more in the contract that people don't read. In other words, it's in the fine print. People sign up with home warranties and they feel that if they buy the service, it's going to be taken care of. In this particular instance, they supposed that the air conditioning was going to be taken care of. But there was a lot of other things that needed to be done to finish the job, and the job ended up costing $4000 for things that were not covered. Other than that, the experience with AHS was good and it's a worthwhile service overall.
Lewis,
Thank you for making us aware of your positive experience regarding your electrical service request and that the issue is resolved. We appreciate your understanding that some restrictions may be included in the warranty, although some helpful benefits are included as well. Thank you for being a valued customer with American Home Shield!

We had our central AC unit fail and contacted American Home Shield on Saturday 9/9/17 and waited a hour before we could speak to someone. They had us call back on Monday 9/11/17. Again we waited at least a half hour before we could even speak to a rep. They scheduled a technician to assess the problem on Wed. 9/13/17. He said the condenser's compressor failed and needed 6 lbs of refrigerant and said it would only take a couple of days to get back to us. We called to see when they would come and they said they gave us a scheduled repair date of Monday 9/25/17.
They claimed they were backed up with service calls due to IRMA. We received no service preference even though we put in our request before the hurricane hit. Today it is 9/25/17 and I took off work to be here and the service tech named Dave, from Total Air Care, calls us and says his back hurts and won't be coming. I requested that he contacts his company and have someone else come. No one at Total Air Care has reached out to us yet.

We purchased our house in 2013, inherited American Home Shield, and we’ve been with them since then. We contacted them in September for our central air and we had replaced the air conditioner. Then two weeks later, the refrigerator went out and the contractor who was repairing it said that they had to get a work permit and we had to pay extra for that. I called downtown to where the work permits are given out and the repair company never applied for a work permit but charged us for one. Then I called the contractor company and asked if the work permit is supposed to be displayed in front of the house or the window or the door and they told me that they don’t display work permits because they’ll make the taxes go up. So I called American Home Shield about it and the rep told us that they could give a work permit at any time. But it’s useless then since the work was already done.
The issue went to the American Home Shield supervisors and it took days for them to call me back to raise a complaint. Yet to this day, I haven’t spoken to American Home Shield since they never called me back. I was so frustrated with them that my husband suggested to go look for another warranty company. Also for this most recent case, nobody was online and I stay on hold for a long time no matter what time I call their number. So while we’re very dissatisfied, we never had any trouble out of them until all that happened.

The previous owner of this house purchased a home warranty from American Home Shield for me and my husband. So far, it’s been useless because everything that it's supposed to cover is not covered since everything is considered to be a preexisting condition. Also, all the things that are covered by our warranty are too old for American Home Shield’s coverage and we have to pay out of pocket for them. The owner spent around $800 for this warranty and with that money, he could’ve done something that wouldn't have cost me such as termite treatment or the wiring.
When I called American Home Shield for a few claims, I was on hold for over an hour. But the people who I spoke to to make appointments originally were fine. When one of the faucets was leaking, the plumber that American Home Shield sent out said that the faucet was so old, he couldn't do anything about it. I also called American Home Shield for the refrigerator that had missing shelves and a door that’s off the hinges. Their representative called me to let me know that the refrigerator wasn’t going to be covered because they don’t cover missing shelves and it's considered wear and tear. But it’s only a seven-year-old refrigerator.
The rep was nasty too. I'm a customer service supervisor and I was appalled by how she treated me. I told her the guy that came for the refrigerator was the owner of the appliance company and he said that he will work on getting a claim for a new door. I also told her that I didn’t need shelves and that I could duct tape file folders for the shelves. My problem was the door was falling off the hinges, it's making condensation inside, and there are no hinges to replace. But the rep said that’s not what the guy wrote in his report, so I told her I'm not paying another $100. Now, we have to buy a new refrigerator.
After that call, I don’t know if I'm ever going to make a claim again because I don’t even know what's covered and what's not. I’ve also spent $300 in the past month on things that the seller got the contract for, so American Home Shield ended up with $1,100 from the seller and us. I hope I could cancel the contract altogether and get the money back. And I would never recommend American Home Shield to anybody.
Although most of the people were great, the only good thing that happened since we've been with American Home Shield was when we first got here, the tech they sent out fixed the central air conditioning that wasn’t working. The guy who came out found a switch that was off on the furnace and which I didn’t even know existed. He flipped it on and the unit worked. But since then, other things came up with the central air conditioning and because I have never owned a house before, I’m listening to what the companies that American Home Shield are working with were telling me. But I have no idea if they're right, wrong or just trying to make money and I couldn’t find any reviews online about the few companies that came out to know if they’re reputable.

I had a claim with American Home Shield about a year ago for my ice maker and icebox. That didn’t go very smoothly because the guy they sent out couldn't fix it. I asked around three times and they couldn't even get it fixed and didn't act like anyone's doing. So, they got me a new icebox. Then recently, I had a claim for the motor on my air conditioner. When one's calling the first time, there's a 10 to 20 minutes wait before one could get to an operator. But this time, I got them quickly on the phone. The problem was figured out real quick and I got another motor put on. The contractors were really good, professional, and did a good job. American Home fixed me up.

My boiler was leaking. I submitted the work request online and that was fine, but the company that did the work request said they had to wait on the phone for two hours just to speak to American Home Shield to submit the claim. They said it was a terrible experience. Sometimes, they got disconnected and never got a call back. So, it took three extra days to get my boiler repaired because of delays from Home Shield. Even I tried to call and every time, it was more than 30 minutes wait of the pre-recorded message. They should add more call center representatives so the wait time isn’t as long, and they should also call people back if they get disconnected. I would not recommend American Home Shield, and I'm planning to cancel. I realized they cause more delays to get things repaired.

However when he left, they weren't working. I don't know if I'm allowed to call him back, or he can come back.

I had service work done on my washing machine and my air conditioner through AHS and I'm very happy with both since the repair. I submitted the claim online and it’s very easy. Also the contractors that were sent out were wonderful, informative and helpful. They were very accommodating to my work schedule and prompt about getting my things fixed. But I had an interaction with a claim rep before that was not as good as the other services. My bathtub was leaking and I scheduled a service for my bathtub. Between the times that I have them scheduled to come out and before they came out, I discovered that it was not a plumbing problem so I cancelled that service. I called American Home Shield twice to get my $75 back and I still haven't gotten it.

We were having problems with our ice maker and we couldn't figure out what was wrong so we went to the place where we got it from but they didn't have any more models. So I called American Home Shield and they said they will refer me to someone who could take care of my concerns, people whom they have been with. The next day, the contractor called and said they will be coming out but they were unable to make it on the time that we agreed to. So we’ve set a second time and they came and said they were going to have to replace our model and will be back in a couple of weeks because they didn’t know essentially how long it would take to get the parts.
After some time, they called and said that the part was in and asked me to give them a date where they could come out and install it. On that day ahead of the scheduled time, they were outside my home ready to come in. I want to add myself to the growing number of people that have had experience with that AHS. I’m more than pleased with the results from start to finish and I will highly recommend them. In addition, I’m very appreciative of their work and craftsmanship that’s why we are with them and will stay with them.

We have have faithfully paid for our home warranty for over 13 yrs with very few occasions to call AHS. This week my air conditioner started leaking so we called our home warranty company thinking we would pay the $75 copay and be good as new...NOT! They informed of all these "upgrade" parts and tons of freon that are needed that they do not cover. Pretty much every piece that's needed was under their "We don't cover" clause. It's going to cost of $1400 out of our own pocket. I feel like I'd been scammed all these years. I will make sure that all of my friends and coworkers know better than to choose AHS when they're looking for a warranty.

My husband has passed away. I no longer want American Home Shield coverage. I am disabled and deaf and have no cell nor TTY phone and they have NO way to contact them through email or any other way that I can use. I truly believe all these great reviews have been paid for by the company. Any institution that discriminates against the disabled and deaf should not exist. I need to contact them and I cannot. The ONLY way they accept ANY contact is if you want them to do something. My husband died the day they were supposed to come out and fix our electricity and since he is gone I no longer can afford the coverage. They took all the money I had in my account PLUS caused an overdraft BECAUSE they cannot be contacted. I guess I'm going to have to hire a lawyer and/or engage the senator.
Updated on 09/28/2017: They took 75.00 out of our account that wasn't supposed to be taken until AFTER the electrical job was DONE. The electrical job NEVER GOT DONE because that morning my husband passed away before the electrician got there. They cost me TWO overdraft fees on my account; one with the UNDONE job and the second by taking their monthly allotment AFTER SAYING THEY WOULD CONTACT ME AND CANCEL OUR ACCOUNT WITH THEM. I advise everyone to stay away from American Home Shield. They need to refund BOTH monies back into my account and if they do not I will have to contact JAG.
I have already contacted them on another matter and I will just have to add this to that unless they refund $191.00. First for the regular payment they said they wouldn't take and secondly for the electrical job that was not done. And thirdly, for two overdraft fees they caused. They said stuff here that would make one think they cared that my husband died and that I can't contact them other than through email because I am deaf and have no TTY and no cell. My husband did all the calling and business. They said such nice things to protect them so people would believe they are going to do the right thing. They weren't being truthful. Save yourself and stay away from American Home Shield. I have had no contact from them as promised here in this public forum. Shameful! Bad company.

I had American Home Shield 25 years ago when I bought my first home and I had a terrible experience with them then. And when we bought our newest home, which is our fifth home, our real estate agent talked us into getting American Home Shield and we did. Our central air conditioning system went and it took them so long to respond to us. Then after responding, they had somebody come out who didn't fix it correctly. Plus, every time somebody has to come to my home I have to take time off of work.
We called again and had to wait another five days before we got a response. The same person came out again and did another quote. American Home Shield didn’t like that quote and insisted on getting a second opinion. And at that point, we just asked for a cash out, and we didn't want to deal with it anymore. I will not renew my American Home Shield and I will never recommend it again. They are a complete and total rip off, plus they really don't care. I've told them all of my opinions. We bought a house in the beginning of July and we've been using American Home Shield. When a plumber I got from them cut open a hole in order to change my shower valve, that hole needed to be patched up. It was easy to file with AHS but the difficulty was the plumbing company that we used, specifically with an employee who just called out a lot but did not show up. We took some time waiting at home for this person. I talked to somebody regarding that issue at American Home Shield and they gave me an alternative if I didn't hear from the company. But somebody was finally sent and he did a great job.
My fiance was at home when the technicians from the drywall company came and he said they showed up a little bit later due to another appointment that they had that ran over. The only thing they didn't do, which I thought they would, was paint the wall and we're going to have to find somebody to do that. We're going to have to paint it 'cause it's a wall now that has blue and white. I got charged for the valve exchange and for the whole cleanup. It was overall easy.

It was too much problem and I paid $460 from my pocket when normally it should be only $75. I called them so many times to submit the claim and then they told me they’re gonna fix it and I got to pay stuff and I said, “Okay.” But if I had $600, I can get anybody to come and fix it. The guy who came tried the best that he can do but he didn’t know and he put in all new new parts in the drain that cost a lost of money. I also had a broken stove and fridge that he fixed and he told me I’d pay the $75 the first time so that I won’t pay the $75 all the time. But when I called Home Shield, they said I have to pay all the stuff. I’ve been with American Home Shield for 5 years but I do not want to do it any more.

Finally we got a repairman and they fixed it but they almost rebuilt the refrigerator. They replaced the icemaker and another unit at the back that controls the operating process and the parts cost about $400 so it doesn't make sense.

I use American Home Shield all the time and I’m happy. I use it for my listings and the only thing that I’d like to see happen is for the vendors to let us know once a job was done. If a plumber went out and did the job, we need an invoice saying it was done.

The air conditioner was working one day and the next day, it wasn't. I checked to make sure the fuses and the circuit breaker had not popped and then I called American Home Shield and told them what the issue was. They explained to me that they collected an $80 fee. Rather than the contractor, I gave them my credit card. It couldn't have been any more simple. They had a representative tell a contractor to call me. I could tell by the phone number that the guy was farther north than me. But he came out within a day and was able to fix it. He troubleshooted it at first, diagnosed what the issue was, determined it was a blower motor which he happened to have in his truck, and was able to replace it out. He was professional and he took pride in himself. He was more than willing to clean up his mess but I told him to not worry about it because I was getting ready to do some work in that room and it's going to get dirty again so I'd take care of it.
Donald,

Most recently we submitted a claim for a heating issue. The system had a leak on it from condensation and it was low on Freon. American Home Shield came and charged it. Their contractor was good. However, nobody works on the weekends and we usually have emergencies on Saturdays or Sundays. So, we have to wait until Tuesday to file a claim. But once we got the claim submitted, it was done by Wednesday so it was still quick.

The toilet in our master bathroom was leaking and American Home Shield had it replaced. I phoned in the claim in the morning and spoke with a representative who was very helpful, asked us all the questions, scheduled it out with a repair company and made sure when we could be there. The repair company then called us that afternoon and came out the same day. The owner of the repair company was the one who initially came out and did the estimate, and they determined that the toilet needed to be replaced. They ordered a new one and someone else came out the first of the week to replace it. Both were very courteous and called ahead to make sure we knew they were on their way and when they would be there. Overall AHS was very professional and they met our expectations.

We filed two claims with AHS. First, the pool heater wasn't working and we had someone come out. He came and then never came back. I even tried calling him directly but never heard back from him and the pool heater still doesn't work. Our washer also wasn't working. There was somebody who came out and fixed it and he was good. We had to pay $75 every time we called. It takes forever to get through and sometimes I'll be on hold for an hour. It's frustrating that I have this policy and paid even more money and the pool heater still isn't fixed.

Both of the technicians sent were very knowledgeable, helpful, and easy to talk to. I recommend American Home Shield highly. It's a good investment. I wasn't too pleased with my last claim. The AC went down on a Saturday and I didn't have any luck in getting anybody to come out on a weekend or even on Monday. I called them on Tuesday so it took a long time for the service technician to even come out. He was pretty good but I did not like the attitude that I got when I called them. It was, "We'll get to you, we'll get to you."
Then, the contractor had to order a part and it didn't come when they said it was going to come in. And nobody ever called and told me that there was a delay until I called them. Then after I called them, magically, the part appeared and they came out the next day. I felt like they neglected me. I know it was hot and they probably had calls but I'm paying for my service contract. American Home Shield should have more feedback about the contractors they use. They didn't keep me updated on what was going on. I am disappointed. My biggest thing with American Home Shield is when I call, I have a hard time talking to a person.

Our oven and gas stove was not working properly. We’ve had some difficulty in submitting a claim to AHS the first time because the previous homeowners had purchased the original warranty and they had their phone number in the system. We kept waiting for them to call us but they weren’t calling, but that was an unusual circumstance. Otherwise, we called them and they came the next day last time. The contractor was here in half an hour and it was super fast and simple. Early this year, we had our water heater replaced and it was a multi-step process but it was resolved. Although it was a little more expensive than we’d hoped but we have our new water heater because the one we had was super old. For us, AHS is a great value for the money. It’s nice to be able to just make one phone call or one online initiation of the claim and have it dealt with from there. It’s simple and it works.

We are happy with American Home Shield when it comes to our heating and air conditioning unit. They have Patterson’s Repair Service as their contractor and every time we have had a service call, the tech has been great to come out. AHS has done everything that they needed to do to get the problem fixed. I made a service call on July 3rd for a plumbing problem in our toilet that was all messed up. They sent out Now Plumbing. The tech came out and he got it working but he said it was a temporary fix. He also said he's going to get back with AHS to see if he could come back out and fix the problem keeping on that one service call so we wouldn't have to have another fee. About a week went by, we never heard anything so I called AHS. They said the tech never contacted them. They contacted him but they could not get a hold of him.
I was familiar with Now Plumbing and they didn't have a good reputation and can't be trusted. I've put in all kinds of request to get somebody else but AHS said that they couldn’t do that without Now Plumbing's permission. But if they keep contacting him and he wouldn't respond to them, then they could go on and contact their customer relations office and they could get whoever they need to get. But this is September the 8th and they still haven't done that yet. Right now, the toilet is doing what it's supposed to but it has messed up. We've done what that fellow said we had to do and it has helped a little bit but it's an ongoing process.
I've had American Home Shield on and off since 2013. I was always able to call and to get right to an operator. But ever since July 3rd, I've been on hold whenever I've tried to call them. In one week, I was on hold trying to get a hold of somebody for over two hours. When I finally got somebody, they apologized. So the most recent service call that we made, we did it online and it worked. If I had to have another service call here, I would go and try to make another one online.

It’s always good to have a warranty on your appliances and with that in mind, having AHS gives me the comfort of knowing that somebody can fix the part or the appliance that's in my house because neither my husband nor I can do it. Whenever I call, they would send somebody out and I don’t know what I would do without them. I had a guy come out to look at my microwave and he said that it would be cheaper for me to get a new one than for him to repair it. So I called AHS and told them that.
Then about a month ago, the part of my fridge where I put my eggs is freezing and there’s no ice coming out of my ice dispenser. I already got it checked to see the plumbing and if the water was coming in right, and all of that was fine. But I can’t determine what’s wrong with my fridge, so I called American Home Shield. The same guy that looked at my microwave came out and looked at my fridge. He told me he was going to order some part, gave me a number and told me to call it when the part comes and they will repair it. That was in August 9 and I haven't heard from him since then. I'm hoping that I can get my fridge fixed but at this point, it seems that I’ll leave everything alone and just go ahead and buy one. This is an ongoing problem that I’ve been dealing with for over a year now. I’m waiting on AHS to help service me and it's tiring.

I’m very thrilled that we have American Home Shield because we live in a super old house. They're great and I have not had any problems whatsoever. My most recent claim was for the garage door opener. It was shot and they had to put in a new one, which is beautiful and is now working fantastically. I wasn’t around when they put in the garage door because I was at work but my husband was pleased. The claim before that was for my air conditioner. I did that claim online which didn't work out because we don't have typical air conditioning, we have mini-splits. The people that AHS called didn't do mini-splits at all. I ended up calling the next day and it took the AHS rep quite a while, but she found somebody that would work on mini-splits. I got all that taken care of and the contractors came right when I needed them. They were very helpful and showed me how to clean my filters on my air. To start with, their website states that they cover gas leaks. Earlier this month, we discovered a gas leak while doing home repairs. This gas leak CANNOT BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE HOME REPAIRS. Home repairs are in the kitchen, gas leak is outside, more than 30 feet of gas line away from the kitchen, in an area that is on the wrong side of the foundation and through a portion of foundation that would preclude anything that was done in the kitchen from causing the leak. Yet they refuse to repair a gas leak in my home. Gas line has no obstructions, it has a leak. The leak is affecting our ability to be comfortable and clean in our own home, that we paid AHS to help us keep out of disrepair. They don't give a reason why it's not covered, just that "Sorry, that is not covered."

Disappointed in AHS premium policy. When initiated contract, had older A/C that still used Freon. Had various problems with the A/C over a few years, which caused AHS to raise my premium with specific citing that it was the repairs on the A/C that were driving it up (doubled). I accepted their explanation and continued my policy. Note: had maybe only one or two other type repair calls before the increase. I have had no A/C repair calls since the increase, but did have a garbage disposal call. I just installed a brand new heat pump/furnace/AC unit and called to see about adjusting (reducing) my policy premium. AHS said they never reduce their premium and would not allow me to take a new policy without the A/C in it either. I find this approach a total disregard for the customer and the facts. I think it is an indefensible rip off /money grab. Looking to find another company.

The man that came out to hook up my garbage disposal unplugged something and then plugged it back in, and he did something that caused my dishwasher to stop working. Our interactions with the contractors were fine, but the last guy who came out for my dishwasher came out for nothing. The dishwasher works fine. We made a claim to American Home Shield for our HVAC and that process was satisfactory. We used web portals and AHS connected us with a local contractor. That process overall was satisfactory. A technician was out in a couple of days to a week which was reasonable. Initially, he wanted to be in and out, about 10 to 15 minutes, and was a little bit dismissive. But working with him, I made him understand there were deeper issues involved and ultimately, he realized that. Our heater was an ongoing issue where even though it was off, it still cycled. But that was resolved and the unit has been running well since the repair. It took three weeks in total, but it was a positive experience. It was a little bit long for a repair but it wasn't a crisis at the time.
I have outstanding contention with AHS though that's been going on for a couple of months now and they haven't been able to resolve. I made a call many months ago about our vent and AHS had a different HVAC group come out. They were only around for 10 minutes and they said they'd be able to order the parts and fix it. The vent is located on the roof, but it's right next to the window, so they had no trouble accessing it and getting it repaired. About a week later, we got a call from American Home Shield saying that the service people couldn't get the parts. They also couldn't do it because it was on the roof, which was the exact opposite of what the contractor said. It felt like maybe it was not worth their time.
AHS authorized us to hire our own person and get it done and they'll reimburse us later, but because of their process, there are only a certain number of people who will work with AHS. Calling in took three hours and it was not worth their time. We haven't been able to find someone who's willing to come out and fix the vent and that claim has remained unresolved for a couple of months now. We did not get American Home Shield so we can deal with service people ourselves and try to find who will fix it. I wish they wouldn't push their responsibilities on commoners. This is their way of saying they don't want to deal with this. Respectively they haven't provided the service that we paid for.
When we purchased the house, the seller provided the policy 'cause there were some issues. We upgraded the policy, and then we were renewed last year and this is our second year on them. We've heard that AHS refuses to renew if they had someone who uses the claim, so we’re anticipating that they’re going to send us a non-renewal letter in four or five months. All in all, American Home Shield is difficult to work with and are evasive sometimes.

Some sockets and lights weren’t working and their reps were perfect when we filed a claim. When somebody hears your problem, gives you a date that you both agree on, and then somebody shows up. It's professional. But having someone out here was a question of my timing. I was only available last week for a day and that was the day the electrician from Quality Electric came. He contacted me and we worked out the time. It was a two hour window and he showed up within that window. He was used to this problem in the area and 85% of his calls were from AHS. He showed me that my circuit breaker wasn’t completely turned on but wasn’t completely turned off either. He also showed me how to test it next time and he put a blue tape there so I would recognize which one it was. He was very informative and after the repair, everything was perfect.
I've used American Home Shield for 11 years now. Initially, they had a very difficult time finding vendors in my area. There was a time when I had to find a vendor and then AHS had to come and save me. But they're doing a better job now. All my experiences have been good once we found people that were absolutely available. I have a leaky faucet on the outside of my house and it could be a valve or a washer but nobody wants to come up to do that. I have to take care of that next week and plumbers are hard to get. I'm going to make a call to AHS for a plumber and that’s going to be a challenge. The Quality Electric guy gave me the name of a plumber although if he's not associated with AHS then I can't use him.
My only trouble with AHS is their website since it doesn’t work and it's not user-friendly. I have a special app in my phone that has all my passwords, however, all my IDs and AHS are blank. When I went on the site and I said I didn't know my ID and password, I got nothing from AHS like an email to have my password reset. They have to work on their website. That’s also why I called their company rather than using the web. I do everything on the internet since I'm not in the United States. I would love to make an appointment on the web and not have to call someone away from my time, but I can't. Nevertheless, AHS is a good organization and they're doing a good job. As long as they answer the phone and get a vendor, I'm very excited.

Because of me trying to use AHS, the problem has only exacerbated and now the walls are molding. It’s like loss of material at this point and I’m at my wit's end.
The plumber who came out today for American Home Shield won’t even be able to do anything until next week possibly because they have to take the papers back to American Home Shield and get everything cleared through them. But he said they’re going to have to jack-up the whole floor to get to the problem and it looks like American Home Shield is only going to cover $500 of it. But I don't know because nobody answers the phone. I sat on the phone for another half hour but I finally gave up. I didn’t have a half hour to continue sitting down on hold. I hung up with them and tried to talk to State Farm and to my lawyer.
I also talked to a drain specialist in the area and they said that they might be able to jet the drain but they couldn't make any promises ‘cause they haven’t even seen it yet. They’re a drain specialist, not a plumber, and they have tools that plumbers don’t. It’s going to cost $325 an hour to jet it and then after an hour, it’s prorated every 15 minutes but usually they can get it done in an hour or just over. That will still cost less than the $1500 even if the $500 that American Home Shield might cover is subtracted.
Plus, I have the drain specialist coming out tonight and they can possibly jet the drain tonight, if it's is an option. So now, I’m paying out of my pocket and basically nixing the whole American Home Shield thing altogether. My way might work tonight if they’re able to do it whereas American Home Shield ain’t going to do diddly-squat 'til next week so the molds can keep growing. We’ve had American Home Shield for 15 years and I’ve loved them in the past. We had an air conditioning problem and they were great, but this issue has been going on for weeks and it's been horrible.
Crystal,

We recently called American Home Shield because we had a problem with the plumbing. We have something in the toilet, the water keeps returning when we are using the washer. The AHS rep helped me with everything and gave me all the information. She contacted somebody to send to my house and fix my problem. It was easy working with her, she's just perfect. The guy came on the same day, he fixed the problem the first time and things have been really good since the repair. He did a great job. I'm really happy with American Home Shield and with the guy who fixed my problem.

There’s some gas situation with my oven and with the pipe that connected it to the gas pipeline so I got help from Nicor Gas and American Home Shield. Submitting a claim online is easier than calling in but for this claim I felt that I needed to talk to their rep in person to kind of explain what the circumstance was. So I called AHS to file my claim and I had to wait for more than 30 minutes. In the future, I would just do it all online. But their reps were very nice and helpful. One lady said that because it was connected to a previous claim, I didn’t have to pay another deductible, but she had to contact a supervisor to verify this. She said she’d call me at 9:30 the following day for that and she did call before 9:30 to say we were good to go. Everybody that I talked to at American Home Shield were really nice and did whatever they could do to help me through this process.
The contractors they sent out took care of what they could and explained if it wasn’t something they could do, like Sears couldn’t take of the problem with the line because it wasn’t an actual oven thing. They told us we had to have a plumber come out for that. The other part was the oven and they said they couldn’t fix it because the gas had to be turned on for that and it was turned off due to it being dangerous. So, they helped me out by explaining how it all worked and what I needed to do. They were really understanding that I didn’t know what the heck I was doing since it’s a new experience using gas for me.
A while ago, I also had to have the air conditioning taken care of. AHS was really nice about that and the tech came out right away. One time, the contractor was late getting out, but when I contacted American Home Shield back, they took care of it right away and the tech was there the next day. I’m really glad I got the policy and though I’m not the kind of person to recommend stuff, I’ve already told a couple of people to get a warranty thing and that mine's American Home Shield.

The refrigerator was broken so I spoke with a representative from American Home Shield to file a claim and it was quick. Their contractor came out and assessed what was wrong and he was good. He ordered some parts and he tried to fix it, but he didn't and they just replaced it. It's not exactly what I want, but it's something similar to it and it's okay. It's definitely worth getting insurance through American Home Shield. They’re a very good company and I highly recommend them.

We had water in our heating unit a couple of days ago. I like talking to a person, and when I call American Home Shield, the wait is over an hour, so it did not make me happy. I fell asleep on the couch, woke up and I was still on hold. I went online, did what they said and requested service. But I have a $100 gift from them when I signed on. I had an issue with something so when I called and spoke to them, they gave me a $100 credit. Now, I have to give them a credit card or my bank before they will send me a repairman, and then they automatically take it out of my bank when they’re done.
I was supposed to tell that I had a $100 credit. It's okay to go online, but if I have a question, there was nobody to ask. They should have something on their website where I can post a question and hope I get an answer. The customer service sucks. I wait on the phone, called twice, an hour each, and the person said that they’ll take care of it. Needless to say, they didn't. Then they’re going to send me a check, which means I have to wait another couple of weeks for it and I don’t like that part of the process. But I like that they sent us Hanna’s Mechanical. They came twice, once for the air-conditioning and once for garbage disposal. They were very good and nice although the contractor had to come back once for the air-conditioning because it was still dripping. He explained to me it was coming from the other side, so it’s dried out and that was going to happen. I would recommend AHS as long as the people know they got to hold on forever.

It takes forever for AHS to answer the phone and it's horrible. When I called them to get my toilet replaced, I was put on hold for over an hour and that's not acceptable. I could put the request online but there's still a need to talk to them. I also feel bad for the contractors where they need to call for an approval because they go through the exact same thing as the customer does. When Andrew from Easy A's came out, I showed him my toilet and asked if it was covered because it was leaking and running continuously. He called AHS for an approval that day to go ahead and they made him hang on the phone for 54 minutes. But that plumber guy was very good and his company responded and called.
My experience with AHS overall has been a great one and I have recommended them to several people. I'm very pleased with the service and the people that were sent out here have been excellent. The techs have done a neat job, picked up after themselves and worked like professional tradesmen. But AHS should do something about their call center because their knack for responding to phone calls is terrible.

We contacted AHS when the pool plumbing was leaking. I went online and filed a claim and it was easy and straightforward. However, it took a little bit of time for the vendor to contact us but AHS gave me a number to follow up in case we didn't hear from them. I called the vendor and got a callback. My husband was pleased with the contractors and the pool is not leaking anymore. But there were actually a couple other areas, but we got them to stop.
We also filed a claim when a bearing went out in the washer, so we had that cleaned as well. We got an appointment right away and it was within the following week that they came and fixed it on the spot. It was a good experience. Since the repair, the washer has been doing a perfect job and I've been very happy with it. I was very pleased with how easy it was to file a claim and follow-up with AHS. I would recommend them to others.

The AC unit was not producing cold air anymore and it was running all the time, so I turned it off, went outside to look at it and saw a bunch of ice on the line connecting to it, which is not great. I filed a claim for service on the AHS website and it was really easy. I spent more time looking for the paperwork to find my number which I didn't need 'cause I could look it up by address, which was nice. The contractor showed up on time and showed me the broken pipe he was going to replace, which only took a couple of hours. He explained everything I asked questions about, made me sign the paperwork and was off on his way. The contractor as well as the one or two AHS reps I talked to were professional and polite. Overall, I'd recommend AHS conditionally, but they're worth it if something goes wrong.

We’ve filed two claims with American Home Shield and in both times, the problem got fixed in a timely manner and we haven't had a problem since. My most recent claim was for my new water heater, and the claim submission process was super simple. To file the claim, we went online, clicked whatever category we need to, and then we got a call regarding the problem. The reps we've talked to on both occasions were great and I have all good things to say about the contractors. Everything was all good.

I submitted my recent claim with American Home Shield about the AC online. The contractor came out to fix the AC but they had to come back because it had the same problem. On the second time, they hired some fixer. They added freon to fix the AC. American Home Shield doesn’t cover freon completely but they didn’t charge us again. They said it’s a very small amount and we took it as an apology for not fixing it the first time. I was very satisfied. Both the first and second guy was very nice.
Although sometimes American Home Shield send contractors who are not very good service technicians. They barely knew anything about the stuff. Maybe they can tie up a screw or change a filter. But they are not very well qualified to do full repairs. And they are stupid because sometimes they spend too much on fixing when they could just replace and it would be easier and much less expensive for them. I have had a few encounters like that. Once the washer was broken. And the washer is a front loader one. So, it costs around $900 to fix it, they spent around $1000 to buy parts and the technician came three times.
But I still recommend them to others because there was one time, one guy took a really good decision. They won't fix the water heater. And the element that they want to fix actually is almost more than half the price of the water heater. So, the guy said, "Well, if this element is broken, that means other elements will break things around. So, let's just replace the whole water heater." You have to fight from time to time to get the right thing. Other than that, they do their work.

I got my American Home Shield insurance from the seller that I bought the home from. I had two service requests so far and the first one was good but I had trouble reaching them over the phone. For each call, I have to wait a minimum of 30 to 40 minutes. I can submit a service request online, which has been easy but if I wanted to reach out to a customer service agent for any question, it is impossible. There is no option to call me back and it's either I wait for 40 minutes or just hang up.
I had claims on my electric range and microwave. The electric range claim went well and the technicians were professional and really good. The problem was with the microwave. It doesn’t have parts and the parts don't come on time. One time, the wrong part came so I had to run my family without a microwave for almost 15 days. I got to wait for 40 minutes to get someone online and explain the problem. I even asked them if they could replace it instead of sending the technician four times to my home. They said they cannot replace it but they are ready to fix it. Coming four times is okay but it took a long time and the parts were not readily available. They tried with the GE parts department and they said it is going to take one month for the part to reach my home. American Home Shield has their own parts department and they said it is going to take even more than one month.
On the same day, I took the part number and I went online. I bought the part on eBay for $10, which came to me within four days. They could have gone to eBay and they could have ordered it. Then the service technician came in and he replaced the door latch and the microwave is working fine so far. I also had a claim for the garbage disposal. They came in and tried to fix it. It’s still leaking so they replaced it but they replaced with a garbage disposal that is not equal to the one that I have. They just put some generic one so that it will run for another year or so.
I have to pay $75 for each service. The vendors that are coming in are doing good jobs. But they cannot do anything unless they have a part and the problem is with American Home Shield. They have their own set of rules and regulations that they cannot go beyond. If they wanted to order a part, they have to order through their own parts facility. Overall, they could improve the customer experience by making callbacks or providing a direct number to reach an agent. They could also introduce a chat facility on the website so that we can also chat with them instead of calling them where we don’t have a telephone signal. I have to think twice before I go to American Home Shield next year.

I have called the company 4 times over the past 3 months to cancel my policy. As of today it has still not been cancelled then they send me a notice after I call to cancel, that I owe them money and they are collecting a debt. I have been with them for 2 and half years, and it was a waste of money. A contractor informed me that I paid more for this home warranty and the $75 deductibles than to pay out of pocket for the two small repairs that I have had the past 3 years. Would you please cancel my policy or I will file a Class Action Lawsuit against you guys with my attorney... This is ridiculous!!! I called home warranty because my microwave broke. After staying on hold on the call for 75 mins, I finally got to speak to someone. They sent a technician after 8 days. The technician said that the Magnetron wasn't working and repaired it. This was in July. Since then, I've had to report the same issue 4 times. Every time they sent out a technician and they reported the same issue. One of the technician even said that I should not be running my microwave for more than 2 mins at a time. That's the most ignorant and ridiculous thing that I heard from a technician. 3 months later I am still facing the same problem and they refuse to have it be replaced. I've asked them for a cashout and that isn't happening either. I'm frustrated and angry at their lack of understanding and professionalism. Had Fidelity before and they were much better than AHS.

I understand that AHS have been in a crisis mode but I called for 10 or 12 days and held on so many times for 20, 30 minutes at a time. I am a caregiver and my husband is disabled. He lost his leg in March and I had to hang up sometimes. I just wasn’t happy about everything. I never could talk to a person, that's what really upsets me.
They came out here somewhere around the end of August. The man was here, 10 minutes at the most. He suggested we needed a new dishwasher because this one was rusting on the front part. My husband has to take medication. He has a heart situation and he has to take blood thinners so if he scratched his legs against that, he could bleed to death or he could bleed a lot. They called, they sent us an email saying that it was approved or that they would get the dishwasher. Then I talked to a lady named Coco a day after that and from there till now, we've not heard anything from anyone and I've not talked to anyone at American Home Shield. They give you no email address. I sent a letter and I don’t know if it got there because it wasn’t an email, it was just a letter.
It bothered me because I worked in real estate for over 30 years and during that time, I was a Realtor for half of that or more. I sold almost every person a lot of their warranties and I love it. We've had good luck with it and we just never had a problem. But not to be able to get any person under any circumstances, I didn’t understand how they would know if it was an emergency or not an emergency. We pay $650, that's over $50 a month for your service and then we pay a co-pay of $75 when someone does come. So, I feel that is enough money-- that it should cover what they need to do and we have not had any major problem, but this could become one.

I really like American Home Shield. They always do a really good job. Recently, I had my dishwasher and my stove top fixed. But the microwave is still up in the air. We haven't resolved that yet. AHS completely understand that my microwave is bolted to the top of my oven. The microwave that they want me to use won't fit in that space. So the alternative is to take some money but the money won't even come close to replacing what needs to happen. We just haven't decided and I don't think they understand what it is. When I talk to them, they think that it's a hole, that the microwave goes into with a trim kit around it. I tried to tell her that it isn't and she said, "You know, those have two control panels on it." And I said, "Yes." She was like, "It's two separate entities" and I'm like "I agree with you. It is two separate things but they are bolted together and if you call Sears, the oven and the microwave came as a set." They don't get it.
I don't know what we're going to do but the microwave doesn't work and we can't get a replacement microwave because it comes with an oven that's $1800, not $347. Overall, I really like AHS. They always do a really good job. However, they need to hire more people because their wait time is way too long to talk to somebody. I waited the last time an hour and 40 minutes on hold. Other than that, they're a great company. They do a really good job. They just don't really understand what my problem is. Nevertheless, I'm satisfied. In fact, I have recommended them to 50 people. It can be challenging but I would never cancel their coverage. It's worth having.

Two years ago, the roof caved in and it took them five months to fix it. A guy came out and took a plastic sheet up over it, and then it sat like that for four months. The insurance company was haggling with us the whole time, trying to say it was our fault. It happened during a rainstorm. My boyfriend has been paying into this for 40 years.
Then four months ago, the dishwasher broke, then somebody came out after a month and put a new part on it, which didn;t really solved the problem. Then a month later, somebody came out and fixed something again for the dishwasher. Then it broke again while I was on a business trip. It took a long time for the guy to finally came out, looked at it and put in a claim, then we eventually got a new dishwasher which costs $500. That was $50 every time the contractor came out. American Home Shield is something you have to have. But every time I have to call them up there, I just realize there are more and more things that aren’t covered that should be covered. So overall, I am satisfied with my AHS experience.

Every time you try to call it's always a 30-minute hold time and it's almost like you don't want to call but then some things you can't do online. When I first bought the house three months ago, it came with American Home Shield warranty. I made a claim and the reps said that I had to wait 30 days, but I waited for 40 days. I called back in, waited online or on hold for another 45 minutes. The reps said they’re going to put the orders in for me and then I find out that they never received the check from the title company. Someone from AHS could have told me that on day one but they didn't, and that was less than ideal.
Since then and getting set up online, I'm satisfied right now and as long we finished the two things that they need to fix that I put a request in for. There's some motor in the refrigerator that died two days after we bought the house and I had it fixed with a rubber band. A repair guy came out here and he put the request in for the part and that was a month ago. I went online and it show parts ordered but I haven't heard anything back. Also, it should say online, "Hey, the third-party person that's in charge of this is this guy,” so I can call them directly but I can't do that. I’ve got to call AHS and be on hold for 45 minutes, which I'm sure is by design.

I just moved in to another home and the person that I bought the house from took out a year’s insurance for me through American Home Shield. I’ve been with them for about three months now. I had called to get some repairs done on my water heater because it was leaking. When I gave them my credit card number, it never came through on my bank. I don't know what they did with it but they said that I cannot get anything fixed until I paid $75. They've been out here before and I thought it was covered by the first time that they came out and it was not, so that's why I gave this person my credit card number so I could get service. When I called back again to get service on them, they said I didn't pay it so I paid it again. I don't know if they got it or not because the $75 wasn't on my bank statement.
My most recent claim was for the electrical in my kitchen. I didn't have any electricity in the sockets there, but when the contractor came out and checked it, it was good. The circuit breaker went off and he replaced some of the sockets there. I felt that he was honest and I really appreciate the service. I have no complaints about him or his son that comes out with him so I'm very satisfied with their work. They got to their business and they left. He asked for $75 and I was thinking that I paid it when they came out and did my sewing room. I didn't realize that I owed them again so I paid it.
An AHS rep called me and told me to write a letter for reimbursement and that's what I did. That was about a week and a half ago and I was concerned about the number I gave them off of my credit card which I didn't know what they did with it. When I didn't get anything on my bank statement, I canceled that card out and got another credit card.

The problem with my dryer started two weeks ago and I filed the claim online through the American Home Shield website. The technicians came out and did a good job, but they had to order some part and when they got it, they found out it was some other issue that wasn’t fixable. When I called them back, they told me to call AHS but when I did, AHS told me to call the people who came out to do the repair. They said they have nothing to do with it once the contractors can't fix it. They told me to order a new appliance and then they would deduct the extra charges 'cause they don't pay for pedestals. I went back and forth for days and it shouldn't have to be like that, but they probably didn’t understand I’m not talking about a repair.
I called a man eight times or more but now I know how this situation works. However, as soon as the customer finds out that they've got to get another appliance, they should be provided a number to call. The contractors should be able to go straight to the customers or tell them to call American Home Shield and expedite things. They say American Home Shield is the biggest company in America but I paid people so they can fix this and I can be done with it and deal with other problems in life.
My wife and I are disabled and going to the laundromat is an inconvenience to my wife. Plus, I’d have to go with her to take the stuff, sit out there and wait. I ain’t got time for that. That’s why I bought a dryer and put it in my house. I've looked at the options but the dryer is no big deal to me. I had a plumbing problem and submitted a claim with American Home Shield over the phone. Talking to their rep was fine but the contractor who came out wasn’t the friendliest and I wasn't happy with the outcome. He wrote on the deal that the ground had shifted, so therefore AHS doesn’t cover that. He could have worded it differently, though. AHS should be more defined what’s covered and what's not in their paperwork because those things are always in the little fine details. I'm not really happy with AHS.

I switched to American Home Shield about 90 days ago and they're good. Other companies wouldn't do my second refrigerator but AHS had it taken care of. I submitted two claims at once for the refrigerator and microwave, and both have been working great since they were repaired. The rep I have spoken with was extremely professional. Sears did the refrigerator and Reed did the microwave, and the Reed tech had worked all day. Having AHS is necessary in my life.

I've had nothing but positive from American Home Shield. They responded immediately and in my experience, they send someone to fix your problem within 24 or 30 hours. The repairs they make are professional and the people they send are very knowledgeable. And I'm a little surprised that it worked so well. I had a hot water heater but they couldn't repair it, but they replaced it. I also had a plumbing problem which they repaired and replaced that. Then I had a central air-conditioning problem. They came and found the problem immediately when the guy who installed it would probably have taken two days to do so.
I’m probably the oldest person that has a contract with American Home Shield. Everything was exactly the way they laid it out at the very beginning, and I'm very, very pleased that I have the insurance. I hope something breaks down again, so they can come and visit again. I'm looking forward to seeing their superlative, superb and phenomenal repairs. They're really a good company. I tell all my friends about them.

AHS is fantastic. However I found it odd that the first thing the contractor asked was for payment. He said, “Yeah, I need to go ahead and collect the deposit.” He said he’ll get me a receipt but I had to ask him for a receipt at the end. Normally the payment's after the job. But other than that, he fixed the problem with the washing machine and it was all good. I recommended my brother to AHS and I’m going to renew my contract with them.

It's a 30-minute wait time or longer when I call American Home Shield and they want me to file the claim on the computer which I don't have access to. The last time I tried to make a report on the computer for a previous request, they charged me for a repair that I didn't get. I’m not supposed to pay unless somebody comes out, but nobody came out. Now I have another request and I need my freezer fixed, but I can't get ahold of them to do the repair and all my food is going bad. I've had American Home Shield for years, but I haven't had to make any claims in quite a long time.
In my previous encounters, my difficulty a lot of times is in trying to get them to replace the unit or to something that's comparable. Generally, after a lot of communicating back and forth, it gets done. Once, they put in the wrong water softener and it took four months for them to replace it with the right one. The repairman didn't put in the right one and charged for the one that was supposed to go in. Eventually, another repair people had to come out and put the right unit in. So, they charged for the one that was supposed to go in there but didn't provide it. Overall, although it's a pain to work with American Home Shield sometimes, it's been a good program and I've recommended it to other people. But I'm very frustrated about what's happened recently.

I used to have four American Home Shield insurance. Their technicians try to collect the money and don't want to do the job. They try to make all kinds of excuses. Last time, my heater was not working. I have the maintenance contract with another company and the rep came and gave me a $1,800 estimate. Because I have an insurance with American Home Shield, I told him I'm going to talk with them. And then the AHS technician came. The tech also gave me a $1,800 written estimate and this is the real cost. Then they sent me another technician who told me they needed the furnace and charge me $600 for the modifications. $600 and $1,400 is a big difference. I wanted to use the aircon technicians from the new client but AHS said I cannot do that. Otherwise, they're going to pay me $450 in cash. I canceled my home insurance. Their customer service was good but overall, my experience with AHS has not been good.

My experience with American Home Shield is very good. They are prompt and very responsive. They tell me if there is any delay. However, they need to have more agents on the phone, it is queuing. I submitted my claim online. The problem was getting the contractor to do the work because they could not have enough resources to cover everybody. I encountered the issue on Wednesday but he came on Tuesday. But once he came out, he was good. I expected my AC to be completely broken but it wasn’t. The service agent said that the AC had been running for a couple of hours before they realized that the blower was gone so the condenser kept on cooling the coils. Ice started forming on top and then melted after some time and the liquid that I saw was some coolant discharge. He fixed the fan. I will recommend AHS.

American Home Shield is a good warranty to have especially in my house. I just bought the house two years ago, so I didn't know how old were the appliances that came with it. I used them several times and American Home Shield came through every time, and when I didn't hear from the contractor, they were Johnny-on-the-spot. They said, "Oh, no. That's not right. I'll call them." They called the contractor and did all the work for me, so I was really pleased and I like having them.
Also, I had a claim for my clothes dryer and the contractor who came out was a nice young man. He explained to me that the dryer had four things wrong with it that he replaced. He rigged it so it could work but it was still noisy and it needed a certain part that would take about seven days to get. However, two weeks went by and I didn't hear anything so I called the contractor’s company and nobody answered. So, I called American Home Shield and they called the company. The company called me back, set up a time to come, then the contractor came, replaced the belt and fixed it.
But I washed two loads of clothes over and 10 days later, the dryer started making that noise again, so I called American Home Shield back. They got the same guy and he said whatever it was that he fixed, it looked off, so he only fixed the dryer for another 15 to 20 minutes. Overall, American Home Shield is a great company and a great investment if you own a home. My monthly payments are low and only $70 a month and it's like having insurance for your house and for your appliances.

3 and a half months without air-conditioning, and counting - American Home Shield has been unresponsive to our plight after our air conditioning system stopped working around May 1. Each request for service phone call took an hour or more. The first technician said we needed to have to unit replaced, but AHS would not do that. Instead, they have replaced the compressor twice (out of pocket cost $1,100) and done unnecessary electric work, and the unit still didn't work. Finally, they agreed to replace the unit, but sent the wrong model. Our house has a high-end heat-pump/air conditioner, and they sent a low-end air conditioner only. Now, they can't even take the time to give us an estimate of how much they would pay if we fix the unit ourselves. We never qualify for escalated service, because the "outside temperature is not 100 degrees or more."

The company contacted me directly to resolve our frustrations and we received the breakdown of costs and were able to reimbursed for the costs that were not incurred during the repair including replacement of the slab and permits (not necessary in our area) etc. We will continue to purchase a home warranty as many of our systems are older and the protection of the home warranty is peace of mind.
Original Review: Sept. 19, 2017
Our air conditioning was not working in mid-July and my husband filed a claim via phone with American Home Shield. The first contractors we had out tried to tell us that there was nothing wrong with our AC and that our claim was being denied. But the AC was not working, so we called back and talked to the AHS reps and they sent another contractor out that diagnosed the problem. They were out here five or six times and tried to limp the AC through, and as time went by, it just got worse. Then the AC popped and exploded for the last time and wouldn’t reset anymore.
AHS was able to replace our AC and that's definitely an improvement. But we never received the detailed bill that we had requested for the amount that we had paid out and I was really irritated because we got the runaround on this and there were items in the bill that shouldn’t have been charged to us because they were not done. Once the problem with the AC was fixed, they charged us $814 for other things that were above and beyond the repair work, including permits, even though our area does not need permits, so we were overcharged. They told me that we had to do that, as otherwise we would have do that on our own and that would cost us $5,000. So, it was really annoying not being given the choice and not seeing the detailed breakdown of what we ended up paying for. On the whole, the experience we had with AHS was frustrating.
Sandra,

My AC kept freezing over and I called American Home Shield. This was the second time I called for the same situation. It took me over 30 minutes on hold to get someone on the line but the lady I spoke with was very helpful in finding someone that could assist with my situation. The first contractor that was sent out, I would never have back to my home though. They didn't like to return calls and when they were there, they were there for less than two minutes. All they did was pull out the filter and they changed the filter when really the whole condenser coil was entirely frozen over inside the unit. But the second contractor that AHS sent out was very professional, very informative and helped me with everything I need help with. He also found that the Freon was low by two pounds and put some in the unit. I would definitely have him back.

We've been AHS customers for over 10 years now. We got their policy because we bought a new house and my wife thought it would be a good idea. Sure enough, within the first two years, we ended up having to get a new pool pump installed and AHS was totally great at that time. We also had a water heater replaced and had no problem with it since then. In the past few years though, what we called AHS for were really simple stuff, like when our AC’s fuse needed to be replaced.
One night, our dishwasher caught on fire and was shooting flames out of the steam vent. We tried filing a claim online on my wife’s phone but their website caught us off guard when it asked for a credit card because in the past, we’ve had to pay the service person. So my wife entered her credit card info and hit submit. The screen kind of flashed, we didn’t know if the ticket went in and we didn't want to do it again because it might double charge us or send fee tickets. But that was kind of a pain because we had to wait a day to see if we got emails and we never got any.
So we called AHS instead and we ended up having a guy come out from Josh's Appliance. He determined that he's going to get the part that burned up and we had to get a new dishwasher. He also said that we'd be contacted by AHS in 24 hours but we I didn’t hear anything from them, so we called AHS the next day. We ended up talking to a woman who walked us through the steps of choosing a new unit and emailed us a link where we could do it all online.
So my wife and I spent the night looking at dishwashers on my computer and picked out the suggested one. It was confusing because when we got to the checkout, it showed a total of $500 but on the first page when we're picking it out, it said no charge. We didn’t know if it meant we’d get a hold on our card if we did it but we tried doing it then when we hit submit, it didn't work. It did that circle loading thing and said processing payment. Then we had to wait because we're not sure what’s going on. Eventually, we left it to make sure we didn't get charged $600.
The next day, I called AHS and had to wait 30 to 45 minutes, which was totally annoying. I eventually got through but the lady I talked to said that I wasn't authorized because my wife was the one that set up the account. I was extra irritated because I was doing it on my break and my wife was at work. My wife liked me to handle that kind of stuff because I was the one that measured the dishwasher and the cabinet to make sure it all fit. So I had to send my wife this detailed list of the exact model number so that she could do it on her lunch break.
After she placed the order, she was told that we're supposed to get it delivered in four days and that the delivery people were supposed to install it. But before the delivery, we got a message from Josh's Appliance saying they were scheduled to do an install for us. I told them that AHS said the delivery people were going to install it and that I'd call them back if the delivery people didn’t do it. On the date of delivery, the guy showed up at 7:00, which was very early. This kid also looked under my sink and started telling me how it's not standard and that I'm going to have to pay to have all the plumbing replaced underneath there so I wasn’t happy with him at all.
Since I was firm with him, he put his boss on FaceTime. His boss looked under the sink while the kid was holding the phone and told him to grab the certain fittings on their truck to fix it. It turned out that's all he had to do and it was a five-minute fix. But he was stressing me out and telling me that I was going to have to replace all those plumbing when he was just inexperienced. He also dealt with the problem by insulting us and saying that our house was really old. Then, when he turned the valve back on after installing the dishwasher, the valve started leaking. He called his boss and reported that it was already existing and left my house with the dripping valve underneath the sink telling me it was just too old. I couldn’t even be happy about having a new dishwasher that day since I was busy all day putting towels underneath the sink so that it wouldn't ruin anything.
We also had some other plumbing stuff that we intended to have AHS look at like running toilets and pipe leaks, so I added that leak in with another service call that we paid for. That one was pretty easy and was more of what it was supposed to be, where I gave the guy my credit card info over the phone. The plumbing place who came out, On Time Plumbing, was super cool and I liked them. When their guy came, the first thing I showed him was the leaking valve because I wanted that fixed immediately. He looked under and said he didn’t have to replace it. He then tightened it with a wrench and had it done in less than five minutes. I spent the whole day under there when all it needed was just to be tightened. But that was the easiest thing that he ended up doing.
When he was working so much on getting the screw off on one of the sinks, he broke it. He then bought another sink fixture for our bathroom and installed that. He was super helpful and really willing to get the job done. When he left, everything was fixed and it was a huge relief. We had no more leaks and the toilets were great. One time, we had a guy out to fix our dripping bathtub valve and he was super nice. We’ve also had good luck with the AC guy who came out and we’ve had him more than once.
Then, I had bubbles coming out of my pool’s return pipes so air was getting in there somewhere. I figured out a fix for it where I could backwash it and it would get the air out of the lines. But it would run only for a while and it got to the point where I was doing it every few hours so I called AHS to see if that was something they would do. When the techs they sent showed up, it was the very end of the day and they were exhausted and acted like zombies. There were bubbles at that time which I was happy about because they could see the problem. I showed them how I was temporarily fixing it then they started telling me that the pipes worked fine. I told them that’s because I just showed them what I did for a temporary fix but they ended up leaving without doing anything and AHS charged us for it.
I was super irritated with AHS because when I called them back, they wanted to send the same place out. I told them these guys showed up already and took a whole day from me. They gave us a window from noon until 5 so we had to take time off and when they showed up, they didn't even do anything. I told AHS that I wanted somebody that can come out and get the job done or at least tell me if it's something that AHS won’t cover. I also told them that I don't want to deal with that company again. They were completely incompetent and seemed like they didn’t even know what AHS covers. I ended up having to fix the problem on my own and we almost dropped AHS at that point but decided to keep them for the insurance, to have that padding in case something happens and be financially prepared to buy what we need.
With the kind of experience I've had with AHS over the past couple of years, it’s been a hit or miss but I’m not completely dissatisfied with them because some of the contractors were really good. But I would like to see AHS have different companies that they could send out so that at least there’s a chance that the new guys could be more informative.

I called AHS to submit a claim, got a text immediately and then a phone call within 10 minutes. The contractors were fabulous, very educational, and they answered any questions I had. I called again today for the same appliance and AHS were very prompt in their response. The refrigerator is freezing everything that’s in it and keeping things cool in the freezer. It's completely reversed. The six should be the highest but it's not and I hate that.
The gentleman they sent out has been wonderful. He's been conservatively looking at stuff and trying different things. He called me and had me tried different settings and explained that the freezer and the refrigerator as kind of like fireplace flue. They go back and forth with them so if you set one real low and it messes up the other ones. They do the very best they can. Like when he left he told me, “This is how I want you to adjust it. If it's still not acting right, then I want you to do this and then give it 24, 48 hours to settle."
It's been over a week and I've done what he said and I still am having issues. Because he said it should take at least a week before we got the right thing and if I'm still having the same issue, then he's going to have to try another avenue because there's only two things that can be wrong and he can't tell you which one it is simply by doing the test he was doing. But he was very informative. He was like, “Don’t just assume that it's fixed or when you change it you have to allow for a certain period of time for acclimation.”
This is a 15-year-old refrigerator so it's confusing but it was nice to get the reassurance from him that they've been doing it right and that there was actually a problem and it wasn't just us. He had a great sense of humor because he said, “You can always put the cool whip and store your ice cream in the fridge and then just the things you want just cool popped into the freezer.” It's a frustrating issue and when you have somebody helping you and they're amusing about it and it's funny it makes it a whole lot easier.

I just bought the house in July and it’s always had an AHS warranty that the previous owners transferred to me. Two weeks ago, I noticed a strange smell in the basement and I found a leak. So, I submitted a claim online and it’s user-friendly. They then had a plumber come out. I thought it was really part of the plumbing but the first guy has written it out as a water pump problem, which is not covered by my warranty. Then I called Ebony at claims resolution and we talked for about 20 minutes. She was nice and she checked back with the contractor and he stuck to what he thought was a pump problem. So she offered the option to get a separate person to come out. A second contractor then came out and fixed it right then. Plus, it appears that they’ve covered it.
I had one issue, though, which has been ongoing frustration on my account. It shows that I have a past due service fee but the seller before they sold me the house had something fixed and didn’t pay the $75 service fee. So, that’s been on my account. First, they won’t even let me put in a new request and so I talked to them. I tried to put an online request, but it won’t let me, so I called somebody and my real estate agent had called and I had called previously to try to get that resolved. They said that they’re going to take care of it and it could take up to two weeks. It has been about two weeks and it’s been still showing, so I’m a bit frustrated about this service fee from before I owned the house is still on my account.
Overall, the wait time on their calling system is frustrating, which is why I try to do the stuff online. Online, when it works, it’s quick or when they call me, it’s fine. But, when I try to call them, I would be on the phone for an hour. I’m not happy about that. My experience with Ebony was great, though. She was very reasonable and professional.

One time, American Home Shield came in and did the electricity problem in our house because the boxes were broken and weren’t working. The company came and I paid them $100 but I had to pay for the boxes because that wasn’t covered. Prior to that, the company that American Home Shield had came in to do my air conditioner in July (when it's hotter than hell) for 10 days but did not come for three or four days. I had to hire someone else to come in and put Freon into the air conditioner. The third time, my washer went out and it took them 10 days to replace that washer. It was a great inconvenience since my wife washes every day.
They realized it was such an inconvenience so they gave me two free service calls. I did use them both but it was harder than hell to get them to actually pay for the second one. They kept sending me bills and telling me I owed them $100 but they eventually cleared that up. I won't use American Home Shield again because it's a terrible company and I wouldn't recommend them.

Something with the drum of my washer was wrong and this rep told me, "They'll probably offer you $400 or I can fix it." So I called AHS the next day and I get this idiot on the phone that tells me she has no manager that I can speak to although I know she's lying to me because everyone has one. By the end of the conversation, she says, "Well, yeah. But they're busy." The conversation went on for 50 minutes. This girl kept saying they have to order the part to diagnose the problem. This girl would not let me talk to anybody else and she was like a parrot. "We have to order the part to fix the problem." The guy already knew what the problem was and if I opted for the $400, he would have been stuck with that part if it was ordered.
I was trying to find out they were going to give me a buyout offer because it's right after Labor Day and Best Buy is having a sale but they are only going on for two more days. When I finally got a hold of somebody, he says that he can't tell me and it has to go to another department. Then that department couldn't tell and I had to go another department. It was a very bad experience. I had to take my laundry to a laundromat, and these fools were telling me it's going to be two weeks before a decision could be made. And then another 10 days, if they didn't give me the buyout, to order the part on top of that. So I'm supposed to go 24 days without a washer? I had bed sheets, blankets, hospital clothes, everything backed up and I couldn't wash anything.
So then, they eventually offered me $420, which I took. But that was after I bought the washer, had it installed and had them take the other out. So if they weren't going to offer it, I was stuck with this bill. I've been a good customer of theirs for 12 years. What's going to happen when the next big appliance goes? What kind of run around and rigmarole am I going to get? Their customer service is the worst I've ever had in my life.

They said the part would be ordered and it would be in on the 17th but no one showed up on that day. When I finally got ahold of somebody, they told me that they forgot to order the part. I told them, “I'm in the trucking industry. I can have one of my trucks stop and pick it up." But of course, we had to do it the way they wanted to do it.
I ended up losing four days of work without pay because of promised things that never came through. I have an autistic child and he doesn't take kindly the people coming in that he doesn't know so I needed to be there when it was put in. It was not until the next week when it was done and it seemed like ever since we put it in, it's cooled off dramatically.
I have no complaints about the guys that did the service. They were wonderful. I stayed in touch with the owner and we worked together. They were very professional. I can't say I'm dissatisfied because we do have the unit. It is in, everything is working great now. The only complaint I had was there in the beginning when somebody didn’t order the part when they said they did.

But if they went someplace else and got a different brand water heater, it would have been covered. Overall though, I like their service. This is my third year with them and they’re simple to work with.

I've used their service 3 times. The first service call was for blocked sewer line. I was satisfied. It was a very easy and professional experience which was completed quickly. That is then. This is now! Not sure if the company changed ownership or was bought out but my recent calls have been nightmares. Like my first experience, I arranged for my service through the web client. I quickly get an email saying this repair service will call and schedule a service call. The second job was for my air conditioner. It was a heatwave and it stopped working altogether. AHS doesn't give you 2 or 3 possible repair services. You're at the mercy of the ONE repair shop. I am disabled and have asthmatic attacks from dust allergies. The repair people call and say they cannot come out for 3 days!
I call AHS customer service and am put into a queue. The queue gives you an approximate wait time, BUT THEY LIE! They recirculate the queue without warning! I'm on hold 30 minutes, suddenly the phone rings and you think it's your turn BUT it auto answers saying how important your call is and says your approximate wait time is 45 minutes! They should have a more modern queue that asks if you'd like to be called when you're next. NOT HERE! I hung up, contacted the repair shop and told them about my health condition and had mercy enough to send someone the next day.
My 3rd, current and probably final use of AHS is as follows. I called 9/13/17 for a leaking spigot in backyard. I mean a steady water wasting fast drip! Same as above but worst! I set up a call for a plumber on the website, they send me a vendor's name, and I'm contacted by them and they give me an appointment, 5 DAYS LATER! I call AHS, same terrible lying phone queue, 50+ minutes I get a representative on the line. I told the support Rep about my leak, the long 5 day appointment and if there was someone else who could expedite the house call. At the time I did not remember the repair company's name but you would think the support representative could see who was contacted and they could then contact a DIFFERENT company. No, after waiting 50+ minutes she says, "Okay I will recommend this company, they can get to you earlier."
I said, "Thanks", hung up, checked my email, and BAM! It was the same company. I'm pissed and decide a high blood pressure stroke isn't worth it so I wait 5 days. That brings us to today, 9/18/17. Around 9:30 am the repair Guy calls saying he is on the way. In less than 10 minutes he goes, "oh, you have stucco around the pipe. That's not good. In order to replace that I'm gonna have to get AHS permission to break away the stucco". "I'll come back maybe later. Maybe tomorrow once and if I get permission". GONE! Water and money still dripping! My contract alllows for the repair person to cut away the stucco to make the repair! I go on the AHS website looking for a contact number for their support again. I noticed it said that the job was completed. I'm angrier now because not only did I have to wait 5 days to get a leak repaired, nothing happened and it appeared as if the work was completed!
I'm lied to in the queue, AGAIN! I'm told 30 min. Queue, after 35 min. puts me in another 30 min cue. Finally I get a representative. I talk to him for 10 minutes. I tell him "for a leak, my service call should have been expedited"; "I wasted time in the queue hoping to get service faster through another repair company only to be sent back to the same company! (BTW, I live very close to San Diego, CA. They contracted a repair company from Riverside, CA; Over 2 hours away!)"; and "is there a way for a manager to call that company and authorize them to do the repair?" The representative says, "Let me get a supervisor", and he hangs up on me! 1 HOUR 15 MINUTES GONE! I know he had my phone number but he doesn't call back!
I start all over again! This time the lying queue says 10-15 minute wait. After 12 minutes it lied! It sent me back in the for another 30 min. I get another Rep on the phone, go over the whole ugly chain of events and they just don't give a damn! I finallly speak to a supervisor who is more of parrot than human. I'd ask him a question, rephrase it 3 times and he still spat out the same canned response. He just couldn't help me! Their customer support program doesn't automatically create a history record of each phone call. I asked the manager if he could reprimand that support Rep who hung up me and didn't call back. He said there was no record of an earlier call. How do you know if these people are positively representing your company?
I asked why didn't they send a repair person more local. He replied, "It's possible there is only ONE available there". I couldn't believe it! San Diego doesn't have one plumber working with this warranty service? I'm a disabled veteran. I made a VA hospital appointment 3 weeks ago for 9/19/17 @ 1:40 pm. I cannot miss this and now because of this unprofessional service, I might have to go 7 or more days without getting my plumbing leak fixed. Yes I am angry and you can think I am exaggerating or really trying to hurt this company. I'm not though. In fact it is so much more frustrating than I could adequately put down here. I pay for this service monthly for years. I may not ever use it but when or if I do, I expect it to be there for me and it has failed.

I've been an AHS customer for years but have never been so disappointed with the service I received when I needed them for something major. I've used them for small things like my garbage disposal and never had an issue. The entire process was seamless. This time my air conditioner compressor needed to be replaced. Instead of allowing the contracted company to order and replace it in a timely manner, AHS insisted on ordering the part from who knows where that took more than a week. It was also sent to two different places before arriving at the HVAC company. When I called AHS customer service, first I was on hold for 64 minutes waiting to speak with a person, then the representative was extremely curt and unsympathetic to my issue. There are several other home warranty companies available to me. I'll definitely be looking at them before renewing my contract with AHS next time.

Tech called within a short time & set appointment & came out 8-1-17. When he got there he checked refrigerator and called in to American Home Shield and was told - IN ERROR - by their rep refrigerator was NOT covered. When I had time a few days later I read my contract & refrigerator(s) are in fact covered under our plan. I called AHS a few time over next couple weeks to talk to a human & hung up after 30-45 min on hold. Finally I committed to stay on line until someone answered and after over one hour on hold finally got to speak to a customer service rep. She confirmed they had made a mistake when tech had called in & in fact multiple refrigerators are covered. She said would send the tech a message that they needed his diagnosis, give them 48 hours. No response.
I sent message from their contact us on their website 9/6. Auto reply someone will contact me soon as of 9-18-17 NO RESPONSE. Called in again 9/13/17 & someone actually answered after about 15 minutes, said still had not heard from tech, would send another request and escalate. Other than that, everything is good with AHS.

We found out that the pipe that hooked to the faucet couldn’t withstand the pressure of the water. It blasted and water went everywhere so we called American Home Shield. The process was fairly quick. My husband gave them the rundown on what happened. Then they took our information and said someone would be calling us back. That was really late at night. It happened on a weekend, but they were able to get somebody during the week to come out. We had two sinks in that bathroom and the problem only affected one sink, so it wasn’t a big rush.
The contractor who they sent was very professional, very knowledgeable, and explained everything. He kind of took it to a one-on-one level for me to understand what it was that he was doing and wrote down exactly what it was that he needed to do and what I needed to look for at the store which was a faucet that would withstand pressure. The problem also had something to do with the valves. I called them back after I found the faucet, got the serial numbers, and told them exactly which faucet it was. Then they got it on their own, and then came back and did it. It was an easy experience, and I'm glad that we have American Home Shield. I've already recommended them to my mom.

I had two claims with American Home Shield: one for the dishwasher and one for the air conditioner. My claim for the dishwasher was great. The guy came out quickly, chatted with us about all kinds of things and he was good to work with. He assessed the problem, ordered the part, was back and replaced it, and they were timely. However, the air conditioner was another story. They came out and assessed it and determined that the air conditioning unit had to be replaced. They contacted American Home Shield and ordered a new condenser for it and said that once they got that part, they would schedule the installation.
They got the part and scheduled the installation, but there was a delay because the contractor ordered the wrong coil. They didn’t expedite it so we were without air for almost a month which was wholly unacceptable for me. And when they got the part, it took them a while to get us scheduled in because they were too busy. I understand it's summer, but I felt like they should have prioritized it and they didn’t. Also, I looked recently and there was water leaking somewhere from the air conditioner and the lights flickered now when the unit kicked on. So, there were some things that were not right about the installation and I had to have them come back out which I was not happy about.
I understand that that’s a policy of American Home Shield, but I didn’t feel like this company was up to the quality that I request of a contractor. They were not very professional and the woman I dealt with was very rude. If I was paying for it, I would never go with them but since Home Shield was paying for it, I'm stuck with them. Home Shield sent them a message and I had to call the contractor to get the appointment scheduled. They were supposed to call me within 24 hours, but they didn’t.
I made complaints with the person I spoke with on the phone and Home Shield said they would refer to contractor relations, but I never received any information from them. Also, it's very difficult to call them because it's at least a 45-minute wait. I waited, but at the same time did the web chat with them last time to get the contractor back out. They waived the technician fee which should be because it wasn’t my fault that the product that got replaced was not functioning in some way.

When we had a leaky pipe, American Home Shield very promptly sent somebody out to look at it. However, it turned out that it wasn't resolved in that visit because it was a very much bigger situation. Instead of a leak, the pipe between the second and third-floor sewer pipes was split. So it was a long involved thing. The insurance company for the building came out and provided plumbers that traced the leak and fixed it. Recently, I had a plumbing problem and needed a new faucet. So I called American Home Shield and then a plumber called me. He came and I went out and got the faucet. Then he came back and installed it. The problem was solved within hours.
American Home Shield is enormously helpful and I'm so happy that I have a contract with them. I've gotten quality responses every time I've had to call them. Their claims reps were very pleasant and knowledgeable. They were friendly and very efficient as well. Their contractors were wonderful. I've had contractors that I continued to see afterwards.

I recently submitted a claim over the phone to American Home Shield for an air conditioner that was not operating. They answered right away and were very friendly. The contractor they sent was good. They showed up on time and explained what was going on. The fan motor was out and they replaced it. The AC has been running fine since then. I like the fact that American Home Shield sent me emails, letting me know when the guy was showing up, and another one as a reminder. They also sent me a text to let me know where the serviceman was and when he'd get here. They were very thorough. I’ve been with them for 2 years and I would recommend them.

I called American Home Shield concerning a gas hot water heater. I could light the pilot light and the burner would come on. It would work fine for a couple of days and then for no reason at all it would just go out. I would have to go back and light the pilot light and I did that twice in one week. When they called me I specifically told them that I have relit the pilot light and it was currently working but I felt like there was something wrong with it and it needs to be checked out.
When the service man came out he just looked at it and said, "Oh it's working. I can't work on it while it's working." And then he left. They knew that before he came out but he just left and I got billed $75 for nothing. It may have been a misunderstanding, but he did nothing. Luckily since that time the pilot light has not gone off again so it’s weird.
But with the first call I had with AHS I had no problems at all. It was an electrical issue with a couple of receptacles that didn't have power for some reason. An electrician came out and fixed that -- no sweat and no problem. I'm totally new to AHS and this is the first time I ever had a home warranty so it's a new experience for me and overall the service has really been prompt and there has been no problems with getting someone to respond at all. I would still recommend them to anybody.

I went to call one time and it took forever to get through to somebody. They put me on hold which took about 40 minutes of wasted time. Once I did, they never got back on the line. I had to go to an account representative to find out what the deal was and it turned out what I was told was covered was not actually covered. That was the first time. I did not like the company that American Home Shield had sent out because the representative told me that he can do one or two things: charge me $1,300 and put more refrigerant inside the unit which is probably going to leak out anyway, or tell the company that outside condensing unit needs to be replaced because there's a leak. Common sense would be to get the unit replaced if the leak is something that you can't fix, so why would he even offer me to put more refrigerant in for $1,300? The rep took the dirty filter out of the furnace which was a stupid because I don't have another one to replace that. When I contacted American Shield, they said the furnace is about $1,100 in change and cost that’s not covered. A few days later when I called to schedule, they were like, "Oh, now it's another $150 for a permit as well."
When AHS called me to schedule, they were very rude and very unprofessional. The rep was telling me that I needed to pay them $1,200 on Monday so they could buy the part which I thought AHS was paying for, together with the cost of labor. I don't know what kind of company they’re running there, but everybody knows once the work is done you pay whatever associated cost you claim and then this new condensing unit put in. When I submitted the claim, the representative had an attitude and was getting annoyed. I thought that was the whole point of customer service representative: to answer the questions of the customer.
I wanted her to explain to me why I was paying all those charges and why I was paying for the condensing unit. She said I wasn’t paying for that unit, and the $75 charge was for the repairman to diagnose what was wrong and, usually, that cost more than that but AHS was paying the rest of it. She was very nonchalant and she really didn't care. I had concerns and she wasn't making me feel like I made a good choice with AHS. I may sound young but I've been a homeowner since I was 25 years old and I'm not stupid. I didn't like their attitude at all so I don't want them doing anything for me. I said I'll find a company that I want to fix it and then I'll do the cash-out. She also said that once one company gives an estimate that's who they have to go with, and that's ridiculous. Other well-known companies with the Better Business Bureau or with Angie's have done a great job.
I told her I'm not satisfied with that company that they sent out and I don't want them coming to my house at all. She said, “That's your choice.” This has been going on for almost two weeks now and I've been going back and forth. I had to wait for four days for somebody from AHS to give me a callback and then they receive their monthly payment for the service call. It's like all I'm doing is wasting money but nothing is getting done. It makes me almost hesitant to put in another claim for something because right now, I'm having a problem with my refrigerator where the water and ice portion is not working even though I change the filter. If I called and put in another claim, they're going to charge me maybe $1,000 to get a new refrigerator.
My aunt told me that I should have never even gone with AHS because she's heard bad reviews in the past that the company’s a rip-off. Maybe I need to cancel with AHS and not even deal with the hassle of paying a company each month if something was to go on and when something goes on, I'm still coming out thousands of dollars. When I first signed up with AHS, the gentleman rep was very courteous and he made me feel like I was making a good decision. I'm not going to say the company totally sucked because I'm not out with this first claim. If I got another company to do the job and they paid me out, maybe I will feel okay with recommending AHS to another person that I know. The end result was I got what I wanted and the AC is fixed, but I will not recommend anyone to AHS because I think it's a bit of a rip-off.

I've used American Home Shield more this year than I have before. I had a water heater replaced earlier in the year and it was fine. There was a previous provider that hadn't done what they were supposed to do because I had to call American Home Shield back for an air conditioner problem. The techs came immediately, checked it and discovered I needed a new coil. Unfortunately, it took about a week to get that. I ended up in the ER due to too much heat but that was partly my fault. Anyway, they got the part and got it fixed right away with no problem.
I recently discovered that I use 9000 gallons of water in a week. I called American Home Shield to file a claim. You have to wait a while to get there. When they got the call it has worked fine. They're pleasant and answered all my questions. The plumbers were here within a couple of hours. One plumber started the work and another one was called. They had to dig up a section of the plumbing tubing. They worked at it and got it done in a hurry. I was pleased with how quickly they've gotten here. All of the repairs have been done well.

My garbage disposal quit working and there was leaking all over. I also had an electrical issue. I called American Home Shield and submitting my claims was easy. Their reps seemed knowledgeable and they told me that I'll be getting an email on who would be coming out. But I didn't know that the electrical issue was not covered until the techs got here. I live in Coburg so I spent $75 to find out I'm not covered and that was not fair. They replaced my garbage disposal with a new unit though and I've had a good experience with them.
But when I filed a claim for my dryer that went out, I had a problem with their delivery of the replacement unit. I've got two working guys in the middle of winter bringing up the dryer in a box. They measured the front door and the steps but they couldn’t deliver it past the front steps. They had to take it down in the box and it wouldn't fit so they just left it out there on my front steps. I called AHS that I couldn't roll it over then I finally had help from a friend who got home from work. He took it right in with no problem. Other than that, AHS has delivered prompt, dependable and reliable service. They also offered certain money back to take care of issues and since the house is well over 50 years old, I will stay with them. We can't expect everything to hold up and if things go out at the same time, I don't have the money to cover that.

When we bought the home in 2006, the people here bought us a home warranty, American Home Shield, for one year and we've kept it since. The claims process with AHS is very simple. I can do it online or call them and talk to a representative. But it's easy to do it all online, put what is going wrong, then the fee, and it’s all done. I usually get a call from the company within 24 hours.
When the dishwasher went out, we bought our own dishwasher because we totally forgot about the home warranty. However, the new dishwasher didn’t drain correctly, so the company that put it in came back out and fixed it. The owner of that company ran a family business and he was very rude, but we finally got that taken care of. The time came when my wall oven’s heating element blew up while my son was baking me a birthday cake. The wall oven was there ever since the house was built in ’58. Sears came out first and said they couldn’t find an element so they recommended it to be replaced. American Home Shield went through another company that they were contracted with. That contractor came out and said that they can replace the element and so we all ordered it.
However, my birthday came and I hadn’t heard anything back. So, I called the company and they said that it’s an old element since it’s an old oven but they've got it ordered and it will be here. They would contact me when it comes in. November came, Thanksgiving, and I had no oven. I went out and bought multiple electric roasters so I could cook Thanksgiving dinner for my family. After Thanksgiving, I called again. They said that they would have the element for me for New Year. But I didn’t have it for New Year either. It took them that long to get the heating element and they finally got it put in after New Year. It was four months without an oven. I had a double wall oven and when the heating element blew, I couldn’t use the other one because as soon as I turn the oven on, the circuit would break.
They put an element that did not look like my other element. There was a shelf guard that goes over the element so when it drips it doesn’t hit the element and anything that runs over doesn’t hit the element as well. They said that they don’t need that and that these are different elements. And then, the element blew within three weeks of them installing it. AHS called them back out again and the company said that they would have to order another element. I called AHS very upset so they sent Sears out and ServiceMaster. The guy walked in the house and said that he remembered the wall oven and he’s not working on it, so he called AHS, sat out there for 45 minutes, discussed it with AHS.
Sears said that there’s an issue with the oven and it's up in years. With that being said, I needed a new oven. Then AHS did what they needed to do. They contacted me and showed me an oven that was similar but a little bit bigger. I had to go and do the carpentry works to get it into the spot. We had to run our own electrical work up because the original electrical was at the bottom of the old wall oven but with the new oven, electrical was at the top. For $75, I got a new double wall oven that will probably last until the day I die. In the end, it all worked out.
We also had our water heater fixed recently as it kept blowing heating element. It was an old water heater and not very efficient. So, AHS replaced it since the water heater had been repaired three times. The company that repaired the dishwasher and changed the elements of the wall oven called and said that they were going to set the water heater up. I called AHS and told them that I don’t want that company back in my home. I'd rather wait than have that very rude guy. I knew that they had other people so somebody else came out and even though it took three extra days, AHS accommodated me since it was such a nightmare dealing with the other company. The water heater that was used was a much better brand than the one that I had and I was happy with that. But if something goes wrong, it will be covered under warranty, but I have to pay to have it taken out and a new one installed. That is standard with water heaters.
Another thing is that we have two central air units since we have a quad level home. One unit does the upstairs and then the other unit does the main floor, the basement, and then the sub-basement. In 2015 the central air unit that operates on three floors went out. A person came out but all he did was charge me for the extra Freon. This year, the upstairs air conditioner went out. AHS was very helpful on the phone. It does take a little bit longer, but the representative was able to pull up all my history and she could give me dates of when I called in the air conditioner. A contractor came out and they checked for leaks and everything else. He said that if I ever had charged my air conditioner, there was a leak and whoever did it should have checked for leaks instead of doing a streamline in it.
I called AHS to find out which company did it and it turned out to be the same company. Right now, that same unit is getting ready to get worked on and they're going to replace the coils since that’s where it's leaking. However, the company can't pay it because everything gets processed through AHS. So I called AHS but they talked to me about the recent claim with a sump pump. I had put that claim since I knew I paid for it on my charge card, but they don’t actually take it out until people filed that it's completed.
AHS is a wonderful company that works on it, but they wait and submit three months’ worth of claims all at one time. So, two months later, I got this notice that they're taking out an amount of money for this claim. Although I paid for it, I couldn’t find the charge. But then, they explained the process. That company finally had turned the claim in, that job has been completed and they narrowed the fee. Everybody has been very professional and very timely. AHS has a very good team of people working for them, except for one local business here that I wouldn’t recommend to an enemy. I recommend AHS to people all the time. I'm very happy with American Home Shield.

Over a 10 year period, I've been impressed with the quality of service of American Home Shield. My primary home is here in Jersey and we bought a house in Pennsylvania. This past year, I got a policy from AHS for the other house. I used AHS for that house and I was so pleased. It has been very easy to submit a claim with AHS. They were somewhat difficult to get a hold of on the phone but their website was very easy to use.
However, I had one incident this year when I ended up canceling the job that the contractor, Rubber Duck Plumbing, was coming out to do. The guy from there came once and said that he’ll come back. That ran for almost a two-week period and he was not showing up, so I called American Shield and canceled the job. I paid $100 for this guy to come but he never got the problem fixed.
Then I called in a plumbing firm from here and they came the next day, fixed and replaced everything, got everything done, and they charged me $180. What ticks me off about AHS is that when I sent them the bill from this other company, they said that they don't pay other bills if we get somebody else or if we cancel. They listed on the sheet what the first plumber said, that he was unable to make a connection with me, which was totally false. I kept a copy of all the text messages and voice mails that I had with the first guy who showed up once, constantly jerked me around, and did not come back. I still get my blood pressure up thinking about him.
But that was the only time in 10 years that I ever had that kind of experience with AHS. I've had one or two claims a year with AHS on plumbing, electrical or appliance issues that I've been very pleased with, so I keep my AHS policy on both houses. I know that I'm going to pay a service fee and AHS is going to hold their fee to the fire until they get my problem fixed, so I generally don't have to worry about who's coming. Two weeks ago, the pump on my pool went out and AHS sent a contractor over that quit on fixing the pool at one juncture because they didn't get new parts. But then they came in again and put a new pump in, and I was really pleased with that.

There was water spewing everywhere in our storage room. It was coming from the piping and was shooting all over the furnace. I went online and filed a claim to get a repair. It didn’t give me an option of putting what the problem was, so all I did was put down that it was my water heater and what floor it was on. In the past, when I’ve put in service request, it would ask what the problem was. When they told me who the contractor was, their office was already closed, so we had to shut our water off. They could not get anyone out until the following day. It would be better if we could indicate a level of emergency and describe what the problem is. Then if American Home Shield deems it to be a problem, they’re going to get someone out a little quicker than us having to wait.
I called them in the morning when they opened and explained the problem. They sent somebody out, but unfortunately they have to contact American Home Shield and explain that the tank needed to be replaced, and then they had to wait another day before they had the proper unit to come out and do that. So it took two days which was not bad. The contractors were awesome and professional. It’s the first company I’ve had come out for something that did not try to upsell me. And since the repair, the water heater works wonderfully. We’ve always had a good experience with American Home Shield. They've been straightforward with the copay and the process.

I submitted a claim over the phone to American Home Shield for my air conditioner and they responded to me within about three minutes. I called at 5:00 o’clock at night and they called me right away. They set up the appointment for 8 o’clock sharp, and the contractor was right there and he fixed the problem. American Home Shield works better than I thought.

I had an issue with my sewer pump down in the basement so I went to American Home Shield’s website and submitted a claim. AHS let me know when the plumbing company would contact me and when they’d be coming. The plumbing company also gave me a call to inform me what time they’ll arrive. When they came, they fixed the sewer pump and it was all good. The contractors were excellent. They took care of the problem right away. AHS is a good company.

Submitting a claim with American Home Shield was relatively easy. However, it was Friday when I submitted a claim to them for the water heater and I didn’t hear anything back from the company. So, I called and it happened to be a weekend, so they didn’t consider it as a workday. I don't know if there’s a way to be able to make that more clear because when the water heater goes, other things suffer such as showers and dishes. It would have been nice to know if that’s the case. If it happens on a Friday, you’re not going to hear anything from somebody until Monday. So, you prepared for two days without it.
The contractor who came was good, though. He came on a Tuesday, found a water heater on Thursday and wanted to install it on a Friday afternoon. He then ended up coming early because another person had not responded to his call, so he decided to come in and do ours first, which was nice. The only downside of doing AHS is you have to wait, compared to paying a plumber out of pocket wherein you could get them a lot faster to change out the hot water heater. AHS was a good program to have and I benefited with the hot water heater, but from now on, I’m just going to pay out of pocket. It was unnecessary overall.

I filed a plumbing claim with AHS. There was a busted pipe underneath the crawlspace. Cindy was the one that did all the claims and appointments and she was very professional and helpful. Since the repair, the plumbing didn’t have any problem. But I have had some issues with them not acknowledging that I paid the vendor and they changed my credit card. I did have something taken out of my checking account that I don’t understand from them for $65 but, all in all, I’m very happy with AHS. The performance of the people that they sent and the way they handle the claims were excellent. I’m very happy with Tenny Plumbing too. I trust them all the time. I’ve been with AHS for a lot of years and I recommend them. I just recommended them to my cousin in Tennessee and he went with them and he has been extremely happy. I also recommended them to my son in San Diego, California.

I’ve had American Home Shield for two years. I had two claims back in July for a broken faucet and garbage disposal. The contractor came out and gave me a new garbage disposal. He said they will be ordering a part that would go on my faucet, and that they will be back. The next week, another guy from another company came out to check on the faucet. He said that I needed a part. I said that’s also what the other guy said. He said, "Well, maybe they're just double-checking and making sure." And he said, "Well, I'll order your part." But he hadn’t been back and it has been weeks. The contractors were good, courteous and knew what they were supposed to do but they hadn't been back to fix the faucet.

My kitchen sink had a problem. Water was backing up and it needed to be unclogged. But it was hard to process a claim with American Home Shield because the person they sent had promised to come and then they couldn’t do it. It was on a Saturday and they were supposed to be there at 3:00 but they didn’t show up. I called AHS and they tried to get in touch with them. The technician eventually came and the job was done to our satisfaction. So far, everything is working in good condition. Whenever I call, I'll get the stuff that I need, they always get me the person to come and do whatever needed to be done and they're always good. So, it has been a good experience.
Barbara,

My AC went out and they sent out three different companies and my motor had to be replaced and the unit. We’re in Tampa, Florida and yesterday it was 89 degrees in the house and didn't cool down until about midnight. The AC would be off and on and then the motor was bad so it would run, go out and then come back on. The first time I filed a claim, I did a chat online and it was very speedy. The guy they sent out thought he fixed it and then it went out like a week later so I resubmitted a claim with American Home Shield. The guy came back out but he didn’t know if it was the motor that’s wrong.
I called American Home Shield because they need to send out a second opinion and then it took a week or two to for the second person to come out and it wasn't even a company. It was a guy and his wife in a van, and they were horrible. They smoked on my front porch and they came in and were there for five minutes. This contractor needed an access hole for them to be able to fix the AC unit because they couldn't get to it the way it was facing. I called American Home Shield from that date for about 15 times and spoke to at least 10 different people, and the ball completely dropped. They told me the things that were covered in my contract but once they finally got to the approval they would say that it's not. Had I known that AHS wouldn’t send out a company like they said they would, I would have done the access hole a month ago.
So finally, they did that and I was told several times that they would call me back. My first claim was July 14th and it just got done today.AHS said that they never received the report from the second company or the pictures. I sent pictures and information to AHS but they still said they never got it. I started posting stuff on their website, trying to get them to react but I was actually worried. Even after all of those, I asked to speak to a supervisor and they still haven't contacted me and every time I call, I was on hold for at least an hour if not more before someone actually came to the phone. My dad who has American Home Shield recommended them and he said he's always had a great experience with them but I had a terrible one.

My AC is leaking at the bottom and although that's fine since my basement is not finished so the water goes straight to the drain, I just can't let the water keep doing that. I called American Home Shield and submitted a claim. The people are great, but the hour and 34 minutes I waited to talk to a person was bad. That was the first when we got it all set up. Then I had to call back for some reason and I waited 58 minutes more. Their customer service is off the charts terrible. I've had three things break in the last six months and each time, the wait time was over an hour. It was enough to make me want to cancel them. It's ridiculous.
I called on a Sunday and heard from the contractor on a Tuesday. He came out and told me that my AC has a crack on its condenser fan. He couldn't fix the problem without putting an A coil in. I had to go through their approval to have that, which took a week. Then they called back and told me that it has been approved and that it's going to be $900 out of my pocket. I didn't think I'd pay, I thought AHS would. I already got $100 into it. A guy from work came by my house today and I found that for another 600 bucks, I can have everything brand new so I'm thinking of doing that. But the lady from AHS said he had to be bonded but my buddy isn't. But if that's the case I'm still going to go on and let my buddy do it and I'll just pay him. He's licensed to do this. I'm also probably going to cancel with AHS over this.

Trying to get someone on the phone was not easy but the online access was very helpful. They got somebody right out to me. The contractors explained to me what happened and walked me through each step of the way when they opened up the AC unit. They showed me what they thought it was, tested it a few different ways and then fixed it. They turned it back on, shut it off and then back on again to make sure it was working. I was very pleased with everything they did and the AC unit's working perfectly since the repair. Overall, it's a very good process.

It was done over the phone and I know from other claims that that's very frustrating because you're on hold for so long. There were also complaints about AHS' contractors from both my tenant and my property manager. When I dealt with them later on, I was disgusted. I had to request a completely new vendor to come in and fix the unit because the idiot before couldn't figure it out. I ended up giving my tenant rent credit because the problem could not get resolved until I got another vendor. Also, I've sent AHS a reimbursement for another repair thrice. Since he's the expert, I let him try what he thought would take care of it. However, it's still backing up and putting water in our garage. I have called him twice now to come back and fix the real problem, but he hasn't contacted me back yet. We recently submitted a claim online and it was easy. The dishwasher was leaking once in a while, the buttons stopped working, the lights would not light up and I couldn’t change the cycle. AHS sent Sears and they were very good. They changed the seal on the dishwasher and somebody else came back and changed some panel. The dishwasher has been working since then. My refrigerator was leaking water on my floor. American Home Shield sent out several companies and they could not get the refrigerator fixed. They were ordering parts and realize they weren't qualified to even put the parts in the refrigerator. I had to escalate a call because I was dissatisfied that I’m paying for a yearly service plus paying $75 a service call and my refrigerator was still leaking. They ended up sending me to another company. But then, the said company told me that they'll order the parts. A month passed by and I was still looking for the part. I then found out that the contractor who came out has been fired from his company, so AHS sent me to another company. The company then told me that they're going to order the part for me.
After a month, AHS called me and asked me if my refrigerator has been fixed. I told them that it's not and they called the company. The next day, I get a call from Sears who told me that they have a service call set up for me the next week. I told them that I have another company. However, when I called AHS, they told me that their company was not qualified to put the needed part. Finally, Sears came out and found out that it was just the drain and that there was a clog at the back of the refrigerator and had nothing to do with the inside. Every time AHS sends someone out, I had to empty everything out the front of my refrigerator so they can unscrew the back of the refrigerator to get to the electronic part of it. This went on for six months and finally, it was resolved last month.
I also kept getting notices from AHS saying that I owed them a service claim, which I didn’t. I had already escalated it to the escalation team and they were supposed to give me two free service calls. I’m still getting the notices and I’ve called them several times about it. I paid AHS $700 for the year and I don't owe them money. I’ve carried them for about 6 years and I’ve never had this problem with them in the past. I always pay in full for the year. But this year, I don’t understand what their issue is. Also, when I call them, they set me on hold for over an hour. I want my $700 back from them because they didn't resolve my issue in a way that they should have. They told me that they can’t give me back my money and that they can’t refund me any service calls. I was very dissatisfied with it. The experience has been lousy and I won't be renewing next year with them.

I called American Home Shield to have a dryer looked at and submitting the claim went very well. The response was very quick from AHS and from the appliance company that was scheduled to come out and repair the dryer. When the gentleman first came, he knew exactly what to do. It seemed like he had it working. So, I did a bunch of laundry and I started to use the dryer again and my clothes are wetter than wet. It took four times to get any kind of wetness out.
So I called them back and said, "Something's up with the dryer." He came back the next day, which is really nice and we had it opened. There was a bunch of different things in there. I said, "You know what, you vacuum that out now, you'll be fine." I come to find out my dryer vent, exhaust, flexible hose, was ripped. So it wasn't acting like it should. It has to be suctioned back in. So he said, "You got to replace your line." I said, "Well, do you do that?" He said, "No. I don't do that." Then he mentioned that normally, it would be another service call, another $75 but since I got a hold of him, he can take care of it but there's nothing that he did then and I ended up replacing the whole hardline pipe in.
What he replaced might not have even been the issue in the first place. So I gave him raving reviews when he first came. He's not a bad guy but he should have done a little more research in diving into the first day. I'm a realtor and we've always used their product but this is actually the first time I had to personally use their product. I've had three claims with American Home Shield but they were all recalls from the first one. I called them out initially because I had multiple leaks throughout the house. The contractors came, they fixed those leaks, and everything was good. One of the areas that had previously been leaking was still leaking, just not as significantly, so the contractors came out again, they snaked the drain, and everything was great. That's the main drain for the entire house and after they snaked it from the basement to the road, it clogged above where they snaked it. So, they came back out, they snaked it again, cleaned it really good, and it's been fantastic.
The first time I submitted the claim, I did it over the phone through the automated service and that was very easy. Then when I spoke to the people that scheduled the claim, there were two different parts to it. So, I had to call back to make sure that those were submitted under the same claim because they're two different areas. Calling was extremely difficult only because I had to sit on hold before anybody answered the phone, and that's been every time I've called. Anytime I needed to speak to somebody, I couldn’t do a recall through the automated service. To sit on hold for an hour to get something in your house fixed is a little ridiculous, and I've done it three times now. But other than that, once you're on the phone, they're very professional and very kind.
The contractor that they sent out was called Choice Plumbing and I have had the same guys sent all three times. I spoke to the same woman on the phone a couple of times and then a guy on the phone another time, and they're all great. The technician showed up within five minutes of the beginning of the two-hour window and he was always done before the end of that window. So, they came here for the three claims: First time was for fixing leaks, second was for plumbing, and the third time was for snaking. I’ve been with American Home Shield since June when I bought the house, so the house is just working out the kinks. Everybody at AHS has been really awesome and friendly other than the hold times.

Still, the young guy was phenomenal. He was in a bad shape that he couldn't turn his head but he still put the toilet in and did a great job.
The toilet has been working like it should be since the repair. It makes things easier for my wife because the bathroom is adjacent to her office and so she doesn't have to go to another room. I've been with American Home Shield since 2007 and they did great works. Every once in a while, I get a contractor who sometimes doesn't do everything he is supposed to do. I always hear horror stories from people telling me American Home Shield's representatives won't talk to me but they have been nice and they responded well. I got my answers right there when I asked and talked to the ladies.

At the beginning of August, I filed a claim for a water heater repair and American Home Shield sent out a plumbing company. However, the two guys they sent out did not even look 20 years old and they had never ever in their life even looked at an electric water heater. These guys didn't even know how to take a resistance rating on heating elements and I had to tell them how to go about that but this was after they had already tried to almost blow up my house. They tried to take the voltage rating off of both positive wires when the positive and the negative laid on a voltmeter and thinking that they were going to come up with 240 somehow. They created sparks by my water heater and almost blew up the house, but thankfully, it wasn’t a gas water heater. They ended up replacing a couple of heating elements and left. They said it would be working but I checked it an hour later and it wasn’t working.
I called the company back up and the supervisor came out. He looked at it and tried to tell me that he doesn’t really know much about it. From what he said, there's not a lot of electric water heaters in the north area and he ended up doing nothing. When he left, it was sort of working, but it would still trip the high limits reset button on the thermostat. They ended up dry-starting the top heating element, causing it to basically blow up inside the tank. So the top heating element doesn’t work anymore and every time I've called, he has told me to reach out to the reset button and reset to 180 degrees which trips it again.
When I called them back and told them it wasn’t working, they said it's an electrical issue and that’s not something they can deal with. So I called up my electrical company, Lytle Electric, which happens to also deal with American Home Shield and I had them come out. They gave me paperwork showing that it was not an electrical issue which is exactly what I knew. I called up American Home Shield to send them the paperwork and they sent out another plumbing company. However, that plumbing company was too busy and couldn’t make it. AHS sent out a third plumbing company and that company said that they don't replace parts, just the whole water heater so they couldn't do anything for me either.
I've been pretty nice about it and I haven’t chewed the crap out of them, but I've had two weeks of dealing with it, having three plumbing companies and having the electrical contractors come out twice because I paid them to come out once and then American Home Shield had them come out a second time and they still confirmed that it was not an electrical issue.
Two of three times now, they've told me they've exhausted all of their resources and that I could pay to have a plumbing company of my choice come out and have it done, and then they would reimburse me. However, that doesn’t help if the whole point in buying a home warranty is, and they have it plastered all over the website, “Why pay for a contractor to come out and do the work when you pay us cheaper?” Why am I paying somebody do it and then get reimbursed a few months down the road? I called around eight different providers that told me they would be more than happy to take the credit card over the phone for payment, but they weren’t willing to invoice American Home Shield so AHS said that I had to pay for it upfront and then they’ll reimburse me. That’s not going to happen.
I've also been told eight times now that every time AHS sent a new contractor out, they applied charges to my account for $75. I paid for the first service call which hasn’t even been resolved yet and after the first two weeks of having to deal with this, I wouldn't let them charge anything else. I've seen that they tried to pop out on my account but it was going to be charged on a certain date. When I called them, they said they were going to remove it but they never did. So I went ahead and changed the account information and because they couldn’t charge it to the account, it's just a pending balance now. I've also gotten people tell me that those charges are going to be removed but every other day I still get an email telling me that I owe them $225.
It's been a month now and the issue still is not fixed yet. Every time I've called AHS, everybody has had an attitude and they've done nothing but say they would expedite it to a supervisor and send emails. Yet, no supervisor has called me back and whenever I call back in, they tell me they don't have a record of me requesting for a supervisor. Each time, I've told them the person before them had said, "Oh, there's no record of that, but I'm going to go ahead and put it in now.” Plus, I've recorded every conversation that I've had with them but I don’t really know what to do at this point.
On the 15th of this next month, I'm not renewing my monthly contract with American Home Shield. It's taking me a month to get hot water on again and I can't imagine what's going to happen if I had a circuit go out for electrical or if I had a roofing issue. Replacing an electrical circuit could cost us anywhere between $500 to $1,500 and it's only $300 to get the water heater issue replaced or working. If they can't handle something small like that, what's going to happen when something big comes up? I'm not going to be waiting a year for that.

It's pretty easy to go online and file a claim. We just bought a new house month ago and we've already called American Home Shield twice. Three weeks ago, I filed a claim for our water heater. They sent a contractor, and it went really well. Now, I got outlets everywhere that aren’t working. I was hoping to get that done sooner but the contractor that called me will not be out until next Thursday.

I've had a very good experience with American Home Shield generally. My most recent experience with them was a broken bathroom exhaust fan. I submitted my claim online and the contractor was great. They got us a new fan although we waited for about 10 days for the new fan. And, every once in a while they don't call for a couple of days but they always come right away if it's an emergency. Overall, they're very good and I'm a satisfied customer.

American Home Shield sent out the first air conditioning guy that they eventually kept sending out over and over again whenever my wife called their office. He came out six times and did something different every time he came out, then he'd say "I got that fixed now." The AC runs when he's present, but 15 minutes after he's gone it was back to heat again. Those were days when the temperature was in the 90s in my area. He couldn't find anything wrong with the AC so my wife called AHS' office and told them to send somebody else out. The second tech came out, went over everything and found out that the unit needed to be replaced, which is what the other guy should have found out the first time. Overall I'm quite happy with American Home Shield and we're very satisfied with them.

We also loved the flat fee and based on our entire experience, I would recommend American Home Shield.

We either call or we put an online claim request with AHS. They came out and did some troubleshooting for our air conditioner and found out that one of the lines was clogged. They cleared out the line and went on their way. The claims representative have been responsive. The contractors have been good too. They range from those that are just deployed and work for somebody and others of the same job, a little bit higher level of concern.
There was one time where it took maybe two or three times to come out so it works for a while and then it didn't hold. It was within their callback period so they did come back. And then we've got one particular case where it took a third call and then after that with a different technician it was resolved. But we have always had resolution. We used AHS because we didn't know anybody in the area so it wound up being a way for us to get the service that we needed without having to go through trial and error of independent folks. We have recommended AHS to people. It's been a valuable service that we do use.

We had a plumber unstop a drain and I appreciated that submitting the claim over the phone was very easy. However, I hate the length of time that you have to wait on hold to get in touch with AHS and I did that for a week. One time, I was on the phone with them for one hour 36 minutes and some seconds, and then I had to hang up. But the contractors have been nice and pretty good. They usually don't have to do a follow-up, but they did with my dryer. Two people had to come out and when the second one came out, he did good but the dryer broke again. I thought we could call them again within the 30 days but it broke again and I didn't have another $75 to spend for anyone else to come back to fix it again. Other than that, I've had very good experiences with American Home Shield. I love them and I would keep them as long as I possibly can.

With American Home Shield, we're more happy with what they’ve given us. The first refrigerator they brought out here was missing an electric cord. And then, we got another one brought in and now, we’re finding that the new refrigerator, the freezer is not quite cold enough. My wife has called the helpline for the company, GE, and they told us to do some stuff but I don’t think it’s cooling enough. We might end up to get another one, on the GE warranty. But the Home Shield folks have been terrific all the way through. They have responded and reviewed the warranty several times. They’ve also come through for us several times on water heaters, some dryer repairs, some pumps. It’s a good deal and we recommend them to friends. Our experiences with them were always positive.

We filed a claim for the air conditioner on a Wednesday at 10:00 PM and the house was over 85 degrees and American Home Shield wasn’t able to get anyone out to us until Monday. When the technician who AHS sent came he said that the motor needed to be replaced and he would have to return on Wednesday. That made it a week. When he came on Wednesday he told my wife that he replaced the motor and if she had any questions or if it stopped working, give him a call. Not even a minute after he left the property the unit didn't come on.
We had to have another company come out and it was Friday when the other company came, which put it at a week and three days that our problem has not been resolved. The new technician who came out mentioned that the initial technician never replaced anything. He pulled out the old original motor which was about 25 years old that was said to be replaced.
The second company called me on Sunday and they came out to our home and fixed the air conditioner and I haven't had any issues with my air conditioning since. Once the second company got everything fixed all my troubles were taken care of. Three dogs, one of which was 15 years old could have died. AHS should change their emergency procedures from 105 degrees down to 80 degrees like most home warranty companies do. But other than that everything's fixed.

I had a problem with my central AC unit and I called AHS for repair. They sent AAA All Brands. The technician came and he was here like a second. He said, “No, there’s nothing wrong. That’s working fine.” I called back and I finally managed to get through to somebody. And I said, “No. You have to send somebody else because it’s not cooling.” They send another person and I had to pay another $100 and he said the same thing, “I don’t really see anything wrong with it.” And I said, “Is it just because my contract’s up in three weeks?” I’m not happy about.
I just wrote a letter about that other incident. AHS is very difficult to get in touch with. They never answered their phone and when you get through they put you on hold for about 45 minutes. They don’t have an email and they have absolutely no way to get in touch with them which is another reason I’m not renewing. Everybody says the same thing about them. They send some good people from time to time but you can’t ever talk to them. That experience was terrible and I had another terrible experience in December but then I also had two good experiences.

Every time, I have contacted American Home Shield to speak with an associate the wait time is not less than 30-45 minutes. The answering service will tell you to go to the website for assistance. This is unacceptable for a paying customer to have to wait so long to get any type of assistance. I have called in the morning and evening (holding right now for 25 minutes). Additionally, the warranty company does not hold Sears accountable for repairs to appliances. My tenants have been without a working refrigerator since 24 AUG 17.
Sears has sent someone to diagnose the problem and order parts- still inoperable. Contacted Sears to request an emergency repair work order and was told to contact American Home Shield to get an appointment for an emergency? Requested to see the policy on emergency work repairs and spoke to three different people that did not know the process for emergency repairs. The people working for Sears taking calls are clueless and not very helpful at all. My recommendation for this warranty company is to get rid of Sears as their contracting source.
Ms. Yancey,
Thanks for bringing your concerns to our attention. We want to ensure that we properly address that your tenants have not had a working refrigerator for almost a month. I see that you have contacted the President's Line and will be contacted by the appropriate party, that will see your issue through resolution.

Getting my air-conditioner fixed was not a good process. I cringe when I have to call American Home Shield because I know I’m going to be on the phone waiting for at least half an hour. It's been awful. Part of that may be temporary, from what I understand. They were a little overwhelmed with the amount of calls they were getting. But that's my opinion. So I don't feel they're very customer supportive at this point. However, interacting with them was fine once you get them on the phone.
My AC wasn’t cooling. I had a company come out two or three times to "fix it" and a week later it would be bad again. There was a one-week period where it was continually 85 in my house. So after three tries, I called and said I wanted a different company to come out. And they came out and fixed it. I know it's an intermittent problem and those are difficult to pinpoint. One of the service people said, "I can't do anything if it's not malfunctioning right now. So you'll have to call me when it's malfunctioning. But then if you do, it's probably going to be two days before I can get to you." The people who come out are always very nice, however, they aren't always successful in fixing things. But once they fixed it, it's been doing great.
They have a discount plan when you buy an appliance and get information from them or get it through them. That's one of their benefits. I tried to get a hold of the department that helps with that and I was never able to get through to them, ever. So I went out and bought some stuff. I stay with them because of the feeling that if something goes wrong, I know who to call. I call them or I go through them and they find somebody to come to my house and do what's needed. I’ve been with them for years and years and I plan on continuing to be.

Upon return from vacation, our air conditioner stop working on our three year old system. We called AHS for the very first time on Sunday 7/16/17 when it was HOT as hell. I re-paid my $125 deductible to AHS. They contracted a company to my home who showed up the following day to diagnose the issue. The contractor stated that a part needed to be replaced and once the part comes in they would contact me. I was told the part would only take a few days to come in. Mind you I have two little boys in a hot second floor condo in the summer!!! I was contacted a few days later on 7/19/17 by AHS stating that when the contractor came out to my home to complete the work, I needed to pay an additional $105 for refrigerant (the excess charges that they would not be paying). Okay where's the part?? I was told by that same representative that the part was in and to contact the contractor to schedule a date to complete the work.
I called the contractor on 7/20/17 and of course no answer so I left a voicemail. The next day, I left another voicemail. No callback. I called AHS every day that following week and the week after taking hours being on hold before reaching a live person to find out what I have not been contacted/work has not been completed after paying my deductible already. I was told by several different representatives something different every time. The first rep was unable to reach the contractor and sent an email. No follow up. Second Rep said, "You need to contact the purchasing dep," transferred and then hung up. Third rep, "I will call you back with additional information..." Nothing. The fourth attempted to investigate but after being on hold to reach the rep for two hours... There was no hope to get in contact with anyone at that hour.
She returned my call however the following day and then I finally received a call from the contractor scheduling to come to my home that afternoon. I received another call from the contractor stating that they went to pick up the part after being contacted by AHS that it was there and warehouse has no idea where it is. The job cancelled. The following day after three and half weeks of trying to get air conditioning to my home was fixed. I can't even blame the contractor because I believe it is the responsibility of the AHS to reach out to me whom I pay faithfully every month. And then the next month August... My premium goes up a dollar without notification. Why I have no damn idea but I for sure will be canceling. I should have called long ago but I after working to help people with their own issues all day and to have to be on hold for hours to resolve an issue, I have no energy. They have truly lost respect and a customer.

But the company that came out to do it only took less than five minutes to complete the task. It cost hundreds of dollars but they did a professional job. This is the second time I had to pay American Home Shield as well the garage people because it wasn’t covered. They had to replace a coil to make the garage door go up and down. It’s a big surprise though when things aren’t covered and you have to come out of your pocket with several hundred dollars. But other than that, the contractors were friendly, helpful and it didn’t take them long to do the job. Overall, it was a good experience.

I talked to him and he was helpful and personable. While I have no complaints about the work quality, I was disappointed with my last claim. My issue was not covered because the lights that were out were deemed to be fixtures and not part of the house. Other than that, everything else has been fine. The one claim that I had the biggest problem with American Home Shield was for a leaking shower. They called Mounts Plumbing and it took about a week for the plumber to come out. The shower was leaking a little bit and after they came in and "fixed it" and were about to leave, I went in there and it was still leaking. I had to call them back in because they were getting in their truck, and they came in. The plumber could see and hear that it's leaking so he said the problem couldn’t be the filter, the O ring, that they replaced, and that they would have to come back out and replace the entire system. So the cartridge, the handle, does everything, but they would have to turn it in for the claim to make sure it would, and they did that.
So, my boyfriend and I have called AHS and I don't remember the exact number but the fee was like $527. The number that American Home Shield told them was different than the number that AHS told us. The contractor kept saying it'll be a different amount and that American Home Shield would only pay $14 and we have to cover the rest because it was outside of the total amount. It didn’t make sense since the contractor messed up, and the only thing that they did was put the handle on upside down so the hot is now cold and the cold is now hot. When we asked them to come back and fix the handle, they refused to do it. They said it was outside of the warranty and they couldn't come out until American Home Shield approved it.
After going back and forth, I didn't trust these people to come back to my house and fix it when they broke it, to begin with, so I hired my own plumber who came in. He looked at it and he said that the plumber from Mounts had damaged the actual pipe. The cartridge should have fixed it and the O ring should have made the leak stop, but in the process, they damaged the pipes in the wall. I had to spend over $1,000 for my own plumber to repair the damage when he could see, visibly, that another plumber had been in there and had damaged it. It's brass, so there's no way one can damage that and it doesn't happen naturally.
We called Mounts and we also tried to ask them before going through American Home Shield since the experience was so bad. We're told them, "Can we just have you come out to the house as Mounts Plumbing and we'll call it even or we will pay you out of pocket-- a discounted rate and we won't go to Better Business Bureau. We won't say anything about your company." They refused to do that, too and they kept claiming they did nothing wrong. We called American Home Shield and my boyfriend talked to them for probably four hours and I've talked to them for many hours. Every time we called, they didn't have any notes from the previous conversations and they kept saying AHS only hires insured contractors like Mounts, so we would have to go through AHS.
Mounts is then saying that because we had another plumber in there, they can't prove that that plumber didn't do the damage and not them. The only option I would have is to take Mounts to small claims court, which I don't have the money to do when I just paid over $1,000 for the plumbing. During this whole process, every time I call AHS, I'm transferred to another person and they're denying. I didn't get a choice on plumbers and this plumber that AHS chose is horrible. I feel sorry for anybody else whoever has this plumber go out to their house.

It was a Tuesday morning when I called and I told her 8:00-12:00 is fine but Thursday won’t do as this was an emergency. I am a senior citizen, I have medicine and I got to have ice. But she said that’s all she could do for me so I didn’t have a choice.
Then the service people called yesterday evening and I asked if it would be okay if they moved me up to this morning, Wednesday. I told them I sure would appreciate it. So he is here right now working on the refrigerator and that made me feel better. But I have never had an AHS rep like that. Generally when I call them, I get very receptive reception. I've also had my hot water heater go out which was leaking through the ceiling and when I called, AHS had somebody come immediately, unlike how that rep acted on my claim on the refrigerator. The tech who came out said one more day and my whole house would have burned down because the heater was going to explode.

The capacitor of my AC went bad so my AC wasn't working and it's 110 degrees outside. I called AHS and by the next day they sent somebody out. He was very pleasant and he fixed it in 10 minutes. Then he charged me $75 and that was it. He was on his way. Since then my AC is working fine. The contractor they sent was very professional. AHS delivered what they promised.

I submitted an online claim with American Home Shield for my air conditioning. The contractor who came out was easy to deal with. He came in, took care of business and he was gone. Although I haven’t had problems dealing with AHS, one of the companies I used before this last one was pretty slow. I had a problem with my refrigerator back then, and they took too long to take care of it. They sat on the paperwork for a few days. Overall American Home Shield is definitely worth the money.

We have had AHS coverage the first year after purchasing each of our homes and only used it for the very first house. We have never renewed our coverage, and was surprised when I received a call trying to get us to renew. The saleslady was friendly enough. She dove right into her sales pitch as soon as I told her we were not planning on renewing. She gave the normal doom and gloom scenarios anyone selling insurance is going to give, and I'll admit caused me to pause and reconsider my position.
After putting together a quote I asked for an email so I could discuss with my husband... as he has every right to be involved with financial decision-making. The first negative experience happened here as she proceeded to tell me she could but my husband wasn't going to be happy with the monthly fee. Problem #1... she doesn't know my husband, and the fact she tried pushing me into making a decision without talking with him was rude and disrespectful. Despite the comment I ensured her that we would discuss and she could call me back the next day.
Fast forward to today and Problem #2... when I answer the phone she is pleasant, until I tell her we are not going to renew. She proceeded to be extremely pushy and talked down to me. Listening to her you would expect our 25 year old house to crumble to dust tomorrow. I tried giving her more explanation than she deserved that we were making an informed decision. After her pushy tactics I finally told her we were not going to renew and nothing she was saying was going to change my mind. She responded "I guess you will have to learn the hard way." I'm disgusted that any company would allow its employees to use such tactics to try to gain business.
She was rude, insulting and didn't listen to me at all. I refuse to do business with any company that tries to get me to make decisions behind my husband's back. I refuse to do business with any company that stoops to wishing negative experiences on me just so I can "learn the hard way". I hope AHS takes a good look at their customer service department and discourages this type of behavior. I wonder how many people have been bullied into buying coverage.

This is a fraudulent company. Over $700 was paid for this warranty for my home... however, after I moved in I've had so many problems in my home and this warranty is a total nightmare. They keep you on hold for several hours at a time, hang up on you, do not return calls and charge you $75 for every item you have trouble with never repairing anything. Always looking for an "excuse" to wiggle their way out of not covering anything in your home... Even the plumber they sent out said they were a scam and a dirty operation. Impossible to reach them by phone or by email or on their website. They hope that you get tired and give up yet they're pocketing millions of dollars illegally.
It will all catch up to them trust me. My pipes leak... I get no hot water. They will not help me whatsoever. I have spent over 14 hours on the phone over one week trying to reach somebody and every time they take my information nothing is done or they get it absolutely wrong and nobody ever attempted to call or anything. I've got so frustrated I became very ill over this entire ordeal. What a horrible deceptive and dishonest company.
Mr. Kuesis,
This is not the experience that American Home Shield would have liked for you, certainly not as a first time customer. We want to help! A social media specialist will be reaching out to you soon to further discuss how to resolve your concerns with your water heater so that you can have hot water as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

I'm really disappointed with my most recent claim with American Home Shield. One guy came in and he said the problem with the ceiling fan was not their fault and they were not going to fix it. We got a second opinion but I never heard anything from the second guy who came in and yet they're charging me $100. That is unfair because they did not fix it and I'm not going to pay for it. They're also supposed to be more pleasant in getting back to me considering the response from the electrician. On the other hand, the contractor who worked on the dishwasher was very professional and the dishwasher has been good since the repair. American Home Shield is an excellent company overall and I would stick with them.

My most recent claim with American Home Shield for my dishwasher was not very good. The number one reason was the time I spent waiting. I called and I was told I would be on hold for an hour and this was early in the afternoon. I called three more times and gave up that day. The next morning when I called I was immediately told I would be on hold for an hour but in ten minutes they answered and it's ridiculous. I've got a feeling that AHS wants me to go through the computer and not the phone but I'm computer illiterate and I have dry macular degeneration so I'm not seeing as well as I used to.
AHS first sent Sears service call and the man came out and he said I need a plumber. He worked for over an hour and replaced some things under there and did all he could. When I went to write the check he said there's no charge but I owe $75 service fee. It says right on the receipt, “no charge" so I didn't pay him. Then AHS sent out the plumber and again he did an excellent job. He was here for about an hour, got it all fixed and that's running great. Then I got emails from AHS saying I owed $75. I called Sears and I said that there was no service charge and then I called AHS back and told them that.
AHS said there was a charge but they’ll check on it. Then they called me back and said I was right and that I didn’t owe anything. It was just a horrible hassle. After 20 years as a member of AHS, I've never had trouble like that. They’d always get someone out here right away, they’d fix the problem, and I’d pay my fee and everything's great. I've had a microwave, two ceiling fans, a refrigerator and now my dishwasher. They fixed the refrigerator and replaced the microwave and the two fans. In my old house, they replaced the furnace and I've just been so pleased with AHS until this one time. But my dishwasher is working perfectly now and the service people were great. They were here on time, they're polite, thorough and experienced and I love them all. Overall my experience with AHS was mostly excellent. I had a bad experience but I'm happy.

I was having washer and dryer issues so I submitted a claim online at American Home Shield. I paid the $125 service call fee and they sent out someone from a company I had never heard of. I did not hear anything from them for 24 hours and when I tried to call I couldn’t get anybody so I called American Home Shield and explained what happened. They called them, followed up and agreed that they weren’t going to be able to help me.
They got another provider to come out and they did a good job on the dryer. They are called the Appliance Connection and I was very pleased with the young man that came out. But we’re still waiting for his next visit once the transmission part comes in for the washer. The representatives have all been very nice and helpful. My only complaint is there is usually a long wait before you get to an agent. And I’m talking an hour. Overall it’s been generally a good and satisfactory experience working with American Home Shield. I like the fact that I can submit a ticket online since I don’t like the long wait when I have to talk to an agent.

Our experience with American Home Shield was all good. My husband submitted a claim with them, and the we had a fine interaction with the contractor they sent out. Our issue has been resolved after the repair was done.

I submitted a claim for a central heating air unit to AHS over the phone and it’s an easy process. The only deal I have was a couple of the contractors AHS sent out didn’t know what the last one they sent out. Because I had a problem for a couple of years, and I finally thought I’m going to buy a new unit because nobody could fix it. But the last one that came out from Mr. Fix It, fixed it. So it seems to me that they’ve got a couple of contractors who were out for easy money and work. Other than that, i haven't had any issues with AHS. They took good care of me.
Ricky,
