My air conditioner claim with American Home Shield went fine. It was set up, the repair guy came out, he looked at the problem, and he fixed it quickly. I had another claim after that for the bathroom sink and for a leak in one of the bedrooms. On that one, the plumber who came out was very nice, but he had to come out a second time because he fixed it, and then it still was leaking. For the one in the bathroom, that was a claim that I had submitted a long time ago, which I called AHS about. The person said that they called me and it was like they were waiting for my faucet. So, for a long time, I couldn't use my faucet in my bathroom because they said that they were ordering a part, but it never came.
Finally after months, they told me I had to resubmit another claim and pay the deductible, and then that was when they ordered the part and I got a new sink. I called AHS several times and they were like, "We're gonna reach out to the servicer," and I never got anything. I thought they were doing their job. By the time I called again because it still wasn't resolved, they were like, "It's been too long. You need to submit another claim." I was like, "Why do I need to submit another claim when this was something that was never resolved?"
The technicians have been fine except for one that I had submitted for electrical where I had no power in one of my bedrooms and he could not find the problem. I had no power in my bedroom. I couldn't watch TV. When it was starting to just get warm, I didn't have any air. I had to hire my own electrician and it was something as simple as it was some frayed wires in the hallway. The electrician told me, "They're gonna have to knock your wall out and it's a problem behind a wall," when that really wasn't a problem. Because of the issues that I had, I got another home warranty company. I just haven't canceled American Home Shield yet and I'm planning on canceling.

When I first started with American Home Shield, my issues were fixed the first time. I didn't have to call them back. But I noticed towards the end, they were sending people that were new at what they were doing. Phil's AC had to come out four times before they got the air conditioner working the way it was supposed to. Also, being a customer for 16 years, one would think that there would be something a little different for me. But instead of American Home Shield staying balanced, they increase every year so I'm no longer with them. I couldn't afford it anymore. I started out with them with $69 and it went up to almost $169.

I like having the peace of mind with American Home Shield. When we got our first house, we had some issues and somebody recommended them. Since then, we've had them. When something unexpected happens, we don't have to worry about selling out. The last call we've had with them was regarding our dishwasher that was leaking water. With Sears, they send you a message right away, letting you know the appointment it said. I receive the same communication from American Home Shield stating who has been assigned. Sears even send their person's information. The person who came was very professional and got the job done on time. He ordered the parts that were needed then came as soon as the parts were delivered to install them.

American Home Shield is the worst company ever invented. They're a scam. I've used them twice, one time for my water softener. They told me in order to replace the water softener, it was gonna cost $1,100. I can go buy a water softener and put it myself for less than that. Recently, the air conditioner wouldn't turn on. I straight up asked the guy how much was it gonna cost me if this has to be completely replaced out-of-pocket. He said 2,000 to 3,000. In this area, I can buy a brand new one, have it installed with $2,500 without having a warranty. American Home Shield is a waste of money.
I'd like to thank you for bringing this to our attention. I apologize for the difficulties you've been experiencing and would like to discuss this more. Feel free to contact me at consumeraffairs@ahs.com.

I have been trying to get my dryer fixed and AHS is using Sears Home Service. This is the worst company I have ever dealt with. I haven’t even been able to deal with anyone local so I’m not sure about the Leesville techs, I’m sure they are great. The actual Sears Home Service company is trash. I have been trying to get my dryer fixed for two months. I have paid for the service but received nothing. I have had five scheduled appointments and no one has showed up. My status on their website keeps saying parts ordered and I have told them multiple times that I received the parts but the system isn’t updating. I haven’t been able to speak with a manager or supervisor. All the call centers are in India and they have not been able to help me at all. The only reason I am keeping this appointment is because it’s through my American Home Shield. When I speak to AHS I get about the same type of customer service. Nothing has been resolved. Unbelievably bad service.

I've always had a good experience with Competition Pool & Spa. They're very knowledgeable. I have requested them through American Home Shield because they do a good job when they come here. I had a claim for a pump recently. They took care of it. They usually come within a day or two of me sending in a request and they take care of it while they're here. We've had AHS for close to 30 years we've been dealing with them, in this house and the one that we had before. I've told a lot of people and my kids that they should go with them because repairs happen sometimes and you're not financially ready for something like that. It's a blow when it's a big one. For the copay that they charge, it has gone up recently again. But I understand, everything else has. But it's still a lot cheaper than having to pay it out of pocket. I'm also not big on computers, but their website is easy to use. I've not had a problem with it.

I had a leak in my heating system. I had a good experience with the tech that AHS sent out. He explained everything. It was an expansion tank, and it was a check valve. They ordered the part and came back the next day and fixed it. It's good now. I've had no problems with American Home Shield. If I had a problem with the technician before, any other jobs, they would right it. They would just send somebody else over.

American Home Shield is very much easier to work with than my previous provider. When I had a problem with the controller board on stand alone range, I called American Home Shield and they had a technician out within two days. He expertly diagnosed it. It was a little bit difficult to find parts but they found it and it was repaired within three weeks. It was the same thing with my dishwasher. It took a little bit longer. It was fixed within a week and a half. But the contractors are wonderful. They're local people. I live in Bakersfield, California and this guy works for a company based out of Los Angeles, but he's part of the Bakersfield team. He knows the area and the people. I've been very happy for the service. They're timely and friendly to talk to and that's all that matters.

The service is real and the $100 deductible is great. Recently, the AC went out and we couldn't figure out what was going on. A repairman came out and checked the thermostat. But something upstairs was causing it to click off so he went upstairs into the attic to find what the missing piece was. He found the missing piece, replaced it and the air came right back on. But some of the contractors aren't that personable. It's almost as if they're standoffish like, "Let me get my work done and bounce." That's cool but inquiring minds wanna know so that I can be better prepared in the future.
Sometimes, it's a hit or miss depending upon who you're getting when you call the line. Sometimes, you get someone that's compassionate but sometimes, you get someone that's not so. Sometimes you get someone that you can have a conversation with clearly. Then you got someone where my country voice is difficult to understand, and their voice at times is difficult to understand as well.
My wife has a high-end version of MS and her sister has sickle cell disease so both of them can't be too hot. Once the temperature gets above 82 with the AC on, I immediately call American Home Shield. I put my wife and sister-in-law in a bunch of fans and sometimes, I have to move them out of the house to another house or take them to the mall or let them sit in the car until it's fixed. But American Home Shield understanding that this is a major emergency doesn't click. Sometimes, it's a whole week, so I have to go outside of them but I still pay for them. American Home Shield would give me the number to the 24-hour people but when I would call them to verify that they received an invoice, they would say they didn't get anything. Then they'd say, "We can still come out but it won't be covered under American Home Shield." For two instances, I had to call a 24-hour service provider that was not related to American Home Shield so they could fix the issue.

American Home Shield replaced a refrigerator, an Advantium oven and several other things. We've also had some repairs on products in the home. We had become their BFF for a while to get them to move, but they moved. Also, given the web form does not permit a lot of description, we've had to have different contractors come out that were specialists in those areas we needed specializing in. Once I find out who the contractor is, I contact the contractor and let them know exactly what the problem is ‘cause pretty much American Home Shield asks if it's working or not working. Their website sucks and the price is not great. But what we get is pretty good and we've renewed the contract with them.

American Home Shield has been great. I don't have any problems with them at all. They're quick. I go on their website to let them know that I have an issue. I fill out what my complaint is, and the site gives me all these different options to narrow it down. I hit submit and then they refer it to whatever companies they have. Once an appointment is set, they charge the deductible and then the company comes out.

It was a very good experience with City First Electric. It turned out it was just a GFCI breaker that had tripped. I had put an expanded outlet on it that had USB and a night light and did not remember that it was a GFCI. The electrician went above and beyond to look at everything in the circuit panel and make sure everything was good. I was very pleased.
I recently had an issue with my air conditioning system. American Home Shield sent out Starlight HVAC out of Irvine and Starlight tried to rip me off for close to $700. I'm very mechanically inclined and I've been ASA certified since the early 80s so I know better. The technician came out and said, "That switch being cut like that made the circuit board go bad." I told him I was not a fool and that was not the case. But he had to turn in his paperwork to American Home Shield and when he did, American Home Shield said, "Due to the fact that the wires were cut to the switch, it caused the circuit board to go bad. We are not gonna cover that component. It's not due to a failed component. It was something else that somebody cut."
We've had the mobile home two years and that wire was cut. They twisted the wire together and put a wire net on it to complete that circuit. That has absolutely zero to do with that. Starlight had emailed me and sent me a text message. I said, "You wanna hit me for almost $700 in repairs, $149 for the switch, and another 460 something for the circuit board. I know better. That switch has nothing to do with it and you know that you're trying to stick me for almost a $700 repair."
I called up American Home Shield and told them that I'm pissed off that Starlight tried to stick me for a $700 repair. It's a senior mobile home park. I'm only 61 but if you got a 80-year-old lady in there, they're gonna probably take them to the cleaners for a $700 repair. I told American Home Shield that I wanted to have a second opinion from another AC repair facility. The rep said, "We can do that. But if they diagnose it as the same exact thing, you'll have to pay the service fee, which is 125 bucks." They set it up and a technician called me. They're from Irvine as well. He probed it with his volt-ohm-meter and did a couple of things. He said that switch had nothing to do with anything and that he was gonna fix it for me for free. He went to his van and got a circuit board out. He put a circuit board on it and said, "I'll make sure that American Home Shield gets the paperwork so they're gonna cover this service call," and it was a done deal.
I upgraded my plan from the lowest that American Home Shield has to the silver plan. The bad part is, it's only for catastrophic failure. The HVAC system is so old and I paid three times for service calls since February. They should have been able to step up and take care of it by now and replace the unit 'cause it's costing them. It cost them probably more than $125 for a service fee and I'm out 375 bucks. I'm also very displeased with Starlight HVAC and I told the representative at American Home Shield they need to think about using reputable people. There's a lot of crooked people out there.
Thank you for sharing your feedback. I'd like to apologize for not meeting your expectations. Please know that our team will be using your feedback to prevent this from happening again in the future.

The repair guy came out to fix a toilet at my house. He replaced the mechanism inside part so it'd stop running. I've had American Home Shield for three years and I like that I don't have to worry about contacting somebody else to come out. I can do it right through their website. American Home Shield is pricey but it's worth it overall. It's easy to deal with. You just do the claim on the site, and somebody comes out and fixes your issue. You don't have to worry about anything else.

I had to go through a couple of different vendors for my dryer, but we were able to get it resolved. The first company said they showed up, but they didn't. The second company got part of the work order resolved. The second part of the work order, which was on my stove, we weren't able to resolve that. But the third company that I worked with was able to get that situated. In the past, I didn't have many issues with American Home Shield. But through my experience now, I try to recommend the technician or the company based on previous experience and I request certain companies now. If the person or company is not one of their vendors, it's usually a issue. But they try to work with you to find somebody that you agree to, if possible.

But when I had to call customer service, they were very professional. Also, it would be the third time the contractor would come out to fix my refrigerator and I'm not happy. I will call AHS and submit a complaint about them. But the recent contractor, Beverly Garage Doors, was in and out. The tech told me that kind of work that he did would have been only a $50 service fee, but I had to pay 125. I wish I didn't have to pay that much. He did the service.

Elite Air did great repair. They were on point. We had to wait on parts because we had to wait on American Home Shield to do the part. I put a call in around the weekend, and a week and a half later, they were saying, "Oh, well, we'll do it over this weekend." I was like, "Well, you didn't do anything originally when I put the claim in on the weekend.” Things happen after hours. Things happen on the weekend. That's why we have the protection that we have. If they're not gonna take care of it, then why do we use them? I wasn't very happy with American Home Shield with that claim.
Also, after I put that claim in, they added electronics to my policy. Now, they want to get more money. I have major appliances under the policy. Then a couple of weeks later, all of a sudden, I get a different statement telling me that all my appliances and all my electronics are covered, too. I was like, "I didn't call you and ask you to add anything to my policy." They did that on their own. I didn't cancel it because it wasn't too much more. I thought about it for a couple of days and with my experience with their customer service, I really didn't wanna call and cancel it because it wasn't that expensive. If it was double what I was paying, I would have called and canceled. They did it on their own to get more money because I put a claim in.

I put a request in with American Home Shield for my washing machine in February and I didn't get it resolved until May. The motor was going bad. It made a lot of squealing noises. The technician came and said there was something wrong with the motor and base. He said he would order the parts right. But AHS couldn't find the parts. And they had me wait. I kept calling. They said they couldn't find the parts. They would pay me for it, and it took forever. It was resolved in three months. But I was paid for it. Also, the ice maker didn't work that good. I wish AHS would act a little quicker when people have problems. Because if people had a problem with their refrigerator and they need it, it shouldn't take months to resolve it. I have a go-to person immediately. The cost is up there. But I'm happy with them. The website was very straightforward. Recently, the oven was not coming up to temperature. The person that American Home Shield sent out was fixing a symptom and not the actual problem. It got until I had to threaten AHS and say that he had replaced the same two parts that have burned up and they’ve got to fix the problem. It was a struggle to get them to send somebody else and to see that this was a priority. The technician said it was fixed. But it's not. And it turned out the whole heating element had completely warped. I had to finally say it doesn't have any different heat settings and it has one heat, which is burning hot, to get them to pay attention. It was a huge fire hazard. But AHS sent somebody else and he fixed it. And it's good to go.
The dryer shut down and did not work at one point, and the contractor didn't know why. But we got it back running. The plumbing guy AHS sent out was a joke. He would not do anything, even though it's under our coverage, and we gave up. It was the same with electrical. The contractor came up with a reason not to fix what needed to be fixed and just refused to do it. So, we’re not super happy. We like AHS and what they've done. We appreciate the service. But some of the people that they're working with aren't the best. We probably spent $500 on tickets for the dryer. I wish they would just say it’s not feasible. Or when they fix it, refund us the tickets that we had to keep calling in.

Putting in the claim and going online was an easy process but overall, dealing with the contractor was slow. You gotta put the claim in and then, you wait for them to call. I had to call them to make sure that they had received it and when they were planning on coming out because it was extremely warm in my parents’ home. But it was over the weekend and it may have been because of that.
The first person that American Home Shield sent out was not helpful at all and as a result, he said he couldn't figure out why the AC was leaking. But the second guy who came out was able to find the problem and according to my parents, the AC is working perfectly well. AHS should have more individuals who speak English well and not just those who speak English because they've been trained to talk. Sometimes, they cannot understand well what people are saying. Also, there's no number to call for a live person to answer in regards to a matter, except for billing issues.

All the pipes were gurgling, so I thought there was a blockage. I would flush the toilet and there would be bubbling from both of the sinks in the bathroom and sometimes from the shower. I submitted a claim with AHS, but when the techs called me, they made me go back and add stoppage to my claim. They said it fell more under that. Then, the two young guys who came out were pretty chill. But they told me they weren't able to fix the issue because it was not a stoppage. They said that most likely I needed to get the pipes cleaned and that was something that they couldn't do.
I would love to do it, but my husband is currently out of town and getting contractors to come over is a navigation on top of all of my other appointments. So, technically, they did something because the bubbling stopped for a little bit. But it's coming back and there's a sewage-y smell when I walk past the toilet. AHS takes the $100 service charge and they'll put you in touch with companies like Nola Aquatics and what they do depends upon their workload. Nola Aquatics came out and worked on my washer. They ran one cycle and did not submit the report. I had to call American Home Shield a number of times to ensure that the report was submitted so we could go on with the process and it was about a month without the report being submitted. AHS said they would try to get in touch with somebody from Nola Aquatics to find out where we can go, if my washer could be fixed.
The initial call with AHS for service is fine but on the follow-up when you try to get a response or information, they don't give you any definite answers. You can't get a definite direction of when, why, and what will happen next. I called AHS for my central air on two occasions and the first time they sent a company to take a look at the unit, the technician of the company was garbage. He wanted to charge me for putting refrigerant in the system. I asked him if that was covered by American Home Shield and he backed down after I questioned him about it. He put it in but didn't charge me. But if I didn't ask that question, he was gonna charge me.

I called AHS for a plumbing claim and the contractor they assigned was professional and on time. They did their job and they solved the problem. I ain't had a problem since. But I've been with AHS since '07 and I don't appreciate them going up on the prices on us old customers. They bait the new customers in and give them a break. But the old customers are the ones that should be getting a break because they've been with them so long. As far as the service, they dispatch the ones that are supposed to come out and do the work and I have nothing against them. Some of their reps are foreign and they do their best, but you can't hardly make it clear what they're saying. You got to go over and over again. But I would still recommend them.

I've had a lot of issues lately. One was a leaky faucet, one was an air conditioner that didn't work, and one was the washing machine. The air conditioner was not handled well. I had to have the techs come out three times. For the faucet, it started leaking again after it had been fixed. I had to call them again. They were gonna charge me because it was beyond 30 days and it was 32 days. I told them I wasn't gonna pay because it was 32 days since it had been fixed. Finally, they waived that fee. The third one was a leaking washing machine and that was a multiple one too.

For my recent claim with AHS, my washer was not draining during the wash cycle. It would not empty the water. The tech that AHS sent came out and put a new lid switch in it. And that's what fixed it. He was amazing. He reached out personally and he talked to me about exactly what my washer was doing. He narrowed it down to the lid switch. He went ahead and ordered that part to have it on hand when he came for the house visit. He worked with me to make sure that he wouldn't have to come out multiple times. I really appreciated that. Each time I've reached out to AHS, it's been amazing. It's comforting to know that I can just call them and then they find me the vendor. I've had great experiences.

American Home Shield is a great plan and a great service. I would absolutely recommend it. They're very responsive. Their customer service reps are always there to answer, and they send somebody out, and if they can't get them here within 24 hours and you call back, they're following up to try to see what's going on with that person or they try to connect you with somebody else.
We have different plans and I have American Home Shield on my personal home, and I've had that since I purchased my house in 2004. I like having the protection that I know if something goes wrong, they would usually respond and have somebody out within at least 24 hours. I had an issue years ago with my hot water tank, and they wouldn't replace that even though they were the ones who set it where it was. They said it was too high, but they put it there. They wouldn't replace it, so I didn't like that. That was one of the things that I wasn't crazy about. Otherwise, they're good about repairing things and if it doesn't work after a couple tries, then they replace it. So, that's great.
Some of the things could be worked on in terms of their replacement and how they do things. It takes a lot for them to get to that point, which, as much as they charge for someone to come out and do something. That could be better but overall, I'm satisfied with it. At this point now, it's harder to understand the customer service because of the language barrier. So, that's very hard.
I had an air conditioner claim where Jacob Heating & Cooling came out. Something was wrong with the fan. Doing it online, I don't think their site gives you something to choose from to address this particular issue. Other than that, the contractors were very nice. They had to come out a couple times because this couldn't be addressed in one issue. They thought they had it fixed the first time, and it kicked on, but then it went right back off. It wasn't getting the house cool. The fan would come on, but then the air wouldn't blow. So, it has something to do with the motor.
We greatly appreciate your loyalty to us and thank you again for sharing your experience.

We had AHS for almost 20 years in Jacksonville, FL on 2 homes at the same time and were very happy with their service contractors and with the customer service staff. They even replaced an air conditioner in one home after it had been repaired three times for the same problem (as they are supposed to). THEN, we moved to the Orlando area in 2018 and, again, had coverage on two homes. Our daughter’s home had an air conditioner that continually quit cooling when it was 95 and humid and she was VERY pregnant. AHS couldn’t find anyone to come out and then when I said I’d find my own service company to look at it, AHS couldn’t guarantee that we would be reimbursed if the problem wasn’t one that was covered.
The problem continued after the baby was born-we’re talking months - in FLORIDA - in the SUMMER. I would spend HOURS on the phone with customer service staff for whom English was not their first language trying to get service! The A/C companies refused to come out any more because the unit needed to be replaced but AHS wouldn’t do it. I spent way too much time in tears that summer simply due to frustration. I canceled my policy and would NEVER recommend AHS to anyone after 2018. I have had a policy with Choice Home Warranty for 3 years now and so far so good.

It was a terrible experience. American Home Shield took forever to help us out. Took 17 days to fix our issue the first time. They didn't fix it right, and it took another two weeks the second time. It's a swimming pool, and it was a swimming pool and spa. It was the pump, and it was very hot. We couldn't go for three weeks with a pool pump working, so the pool went green. We had to pay all kinds of extra costs to have the water changed and the pool acid washed because of AHS' delays. It's their strategy. They try to delay everything until I would get frustrated to fix, and I would pay to have it fixed myself.
The whole thing is a fraud. We've been clients for many years, and when we needed AHS, they didn't come through. We could have had anybody fix it in a day or two. There are hundreds of local pool companies that could have done it, but we had to use AHS' company, which is a very long process for fixing it. We've had very little satisfaction from them. They don't care that we incurred a bunch of extra cost. They wouldn't cover it. They just repeat back what I said to them and say they were sorry, but they didn't try to fix anything. We will not renew with them, and we will tell all of our friends about our experience and how bad it was.

The communication with American Home Shield was fine and the customer service reps were nice about getting me in contact with the person with regards to having my appliances evaluated or inspected. I didn't have any problem with communicating and receiving the response. The downside is that the replacement for my dryer was a cheaper version of what I had. So, it wasn't an equal swap. Another thing is, when I first purchased this warranty agreement, I was told that the inspection fee would be $75. But when I called and made a claim, the reps were telling me it was $125. Maybe I misunderstood something that they said. But I tend to write everything down, especially when it comes to what I'm paying for. I'd like to be clear on what I'm paying for. Maybe there was some miscommunication in the process with the representative that I spoke with.

If you have to get in touch with this company....best of luck to you. Most painful claims/customer service I have ever encountered, I felt like I was going insane. Everyone gives you the run around with no answers. I am a new homeowner, and my real estate agent recommended American Home Shield. A month after we moved in, we hit a heat wave in MA. The split unit in my bedroom didn't seem to be cooling properly so we put a claim in for service. The tech advised that there was a leak in the lines so it was low on freon, and that they would send the information to Home Shield. A week went by and I did not a hear a single thing from Home Shield. I called and would get told every day, they were waiting on the tech who was unresponsive. I asked how long they wait to get authorization and kept giving me the run around saying the tech company was unresponsive and a supervisor would reach out and escalate this matter.
Well no one ever reached out. I had to call in and spend hours and days on the phone looking for a resolution with no end in sight. I finally contacted my realtor, and contacted BBB. After two weeks, I got a call from Home Shield advising they were denying the claim because the unit had clearly been broken for a while. I asked on what basis the claim was denied because their contact states they cover pre existing damage unless it was "known damage or reasonably detected" prior. I asked how could I have known this was damaged and showed the disclosure form from when we first bought the house stating the unit was only 5 years old and was in working condition. They told me the tech stated that I must have known. I spoke with the tech from HVAC who stated that was never disclosed and that he never said that I must have known the damage was there and agreed there was no way I could have known about the damage.
I have been getting the complete run around with this claim with Home Shield faulting the tech and the Tech telling me that was not what was relayed to them. I feel this is a complete con to find ways to not cover claims and as a female I feel they are trying to play on their exclusions thinking I am a dumb woman so I won't question anything. I still am in limbo while the two companies get in contact with each other. When I try to speak with the person handling my claim to relay the information from the tech, all of a sudden the claims person is "unreachable" and no customer service rep can transfer me.
This process is an absolute nightmare. If you have to use Home Shield, you will not have a pleasant experience if it's not a cut and dry repair. Hoping I have a resolution soon and that they cover this issue because it clearly states in their contract this repair should be covered but they look for excuses not to cover claims and use convenient interpretation.

I left American Home Shield and went to Choice Home Warranty for a year then came back to American Home Shield. The premiums are good. They're doing good with that because they cut the coverage. When you cut the coverage, you can't expect to charge people a whole bunch of premium. But they need to come down on the service fee 'cause it's too much. I also don't like the part where we have to pay so much for our freon. I have a unit that requires R-22 freon. If I have to get my air conditioner serviced, we have to pay the bulk of the freon. American Home Shield only does $10 on it and it may be $80. That means if we gotta get three tons, that's $210 coming out of our pocket. Recently, I had to call them out two times in order to get a plumbing issue fixed. But it wasn't their fault because my unit is a different unit than what they make now to heat water. The repairman was very thorough.

I had someone come out to check the dryer and another who checked my stove. I had to go with whatever they said and I didn’t have any problems with those contractors. For the dryer, the tech told me that there wasn't anything wrong with it and the issue had something to do with just the setting of the dryer itself. But there was one company that came out for the plumbing that I didn't appreciate. I had them twice and the first time, they were running around the bush then finally, their guy came and did nothing. So, I just hired somebody to get my plumbing work done. The second time I had them out, I thought their tech was clearing out my floor drains in my basement. But less than a month later, I had sewage backing up into my basement. So I just paid somebody cash money to come and clean out the drain the way it should have been done.
I wish AHS had quality people; that if you're paying for something, you'll be getting your money's worth. Because they're insuring you and you pay a monthly premium, but then somebody comes out and does a shoddy job. All in all, I wouldn't even bother recommending AHS. I was also thinking about switching, but I really don't know what would be a better place to go. And I paid my money in all this for almost two years now.

Any time we work with American Home Shield or any of their providers that they sent out, the service has been very poor. The guys have been very unprofessional, so has American Home Shield. We recently had On Point work on some plumbing issue. There might be certain individuals inside the company that have been a little decent and a little helpful. But overall, we would not recommend American Home Shield or any of the contract providers that they have sent out. We've just been stuck with American Home Shield. We also renewed our policy with them just because we had previously been with them and we wanted to have some type of coverage if something hits the fan. But the amount of money that we pay them along with the stress and everything else that comes along with dealing with them is not worth even a dollar.
American Home Shield has made me lose brain cells and increased my blood pressure numerous of times. Having to be on the phone and trying to get my point across for hours is not worth it whatsoever. I don't know why the stuff doesn't get documented right and they don't have a process in place on how to make sure that as a customer, I would feel confident that if something goes wrong, I'm going to be taken care of. I had an AC guy come out for my AC that wasn't working. He had a big conversation with me where he was telling me that the coil in my unit on the outside was a five-ton and the coil in my unit on the inside was a four-ton. When he left after having a conversation, I thought that he was saying that American Home Shield was not going to cover my claim. Because the coils in the inside were smaller, it was causing the problem on my condenser on the outside. He gave me an estimate for 12,000 to replace both.
I was talking to a friend of mine that night, trying to figure out what to do. He told me he got a guy and that guy came out and gave me an estimate for 7,000. I ended up getting it replaced with the 7,000 versus the 12,000. I tried to call the guy again to get some more clarification. He ended up telling me American Home Shield would have replaced the compressor, not the coils on the inside. But he had also given me this big speech about the antifreeze, about how it was mismatched so they would have to drain it and I would have to buy new antifreeze which was expensive. He confused me and I didn't know how to get ahold of somebody at the American Home Shield to help me.
I've had American Home Shield since I bought my house four years ago, and I kept it for the AC. I knew my unit was old, and I was willing to continue getting it replaced. But the AC guy made me think that they weren't gonna replace it and he had some guy he was calling. I tried to call American Home Shield at one point, but I was having a hard time getting through to anybody. Then when I talked to somebody, they told me that they had not received his recommendations. Up until this point, I was happy with American Home Shield. I’m very frustrated with the situation. The second issue was I have a leakage on my water heater. American Home Shield sent somebody who said it's leaking. They gave me an estimate of almost $2,600 and American Home Shield would only pay me $900 for that. The plumber said they're gonna put a new unit and it needs a new plumbing. But the plumbing is just to change a couple of pipes to fit different sizes. It's not rocket science.
My unit cost $5,000 if I get the same thing. They said they're gonna get it for much cheaper and the labor is cheaper. To change a couple of the pipes, they would charge me $2,600 and for them to buy the whole unit and install it, it would only cost them $900. It doesn't make any sense. My AC claim with American Home Shield was a waste of time. I don't think I'm gonna be calling them anymore for any air conditioning because they don't cover anything. They charged me $125, which is $50 more than the guy himself would have charged me to come look. And then the Freon that he added cost me $250. AHS covered $30 of that. So if I had not called them, I would have saved myself money. The cost of doing any air conditioning work is cheaper by myself than it is with American Home Shield unless the unit has to be completely replaced. In other words, if they had to be replaced, they would have shelled that five grand. So, that would have helped. But when it comes to just general small issues, I find American Home Shield is not worth the money.

I said, “What am I supposed to do to find the leak?” In the meantime, I called back American Home Shield and said, “He couldn't find the leak. I want somebody else to come out.” They said, “You're gonna have to pay another service fee.” I said, “I don't want this other guy to come to my house because it was a disaster.” I had a local guy come. He found the problem in 10 minutes. So, I called AHS back and said, “Can I get this guy to come?” They said, “No. He's not in the system.” I said, “I do not want Trademasters to come again because they were incompetent.”
It took two months to fix this problem. I talked to everybody I could talk to and finally got other people to come out and fix it that were involved with AHS. I talked to some nice people. But the men I talked to were more helpful than the women. The women gave a spiel, "This is what I'm supposed to say." They were hard to understand. I was so frustrated. I didn't know what to do. It was a discouraging transaction with AHS. I've been with them a very long time. It was terrible. Plus, the premium went up again.

The people that come out always have to get a second opinion. It always feels like they're playing the system instead of going through American Home Shield and fixing what needs to be fixed. There's always an adjustment that has to be made to where I am asked to pay the company directly. For example, with my water heater that I got changed a few years back and with my AC unit that I just called in, instead of fixing it, they said, “It'd be tougher to go through American Home Shield because they're gonna take a long amount of time and you need your AC now.” They recommended that I purchase a unit from them instead of fixing what the problem was. Something always has to be modified when they just have to take one out and put the other in the same way it was.
I've been dealing with some shady contractors and I've been on and off American Home Shield because of this. I've had it at both my homes. But when I come across somebody who I feel is trying to make a quick buck outside American Home Shield, I drop it. I've always contemplated in dropping it because of the people who they send. When I find somebody good, I say, “Keep them on the list because they're trustworthy.” Then when I have another issue that comes up with my home, they don't send that same person out. They send somebody else and we're back in the web of seeing if the people that they send out are trustworthy and competent for that matter.

The wait-out time for American Home Shield's mechanic was more than a few days so we had a local guy come in, do the repairs and submit his bill to American Home Shield. But they refused to pay it. They thought that his labor costs were not correct. They didn't even offer to settle on a different amount. They just refused the entire claim. This is our first claim with American Home Shield. We have homeowners insurance on other properties that we have and usually, when we have to bring someone out of their system in to repair it, they will reimburse us what they usually pay their repair people. I've been with AHS for a while and they have changed their service so much now. It kind of bothers me. Years ago, they would give better options when I had a bad appliance. But I know they probably run into a lot of stuff, too. Also, they don't have their mechanics in-house and they were using Sears mechanics for my most recent claim. The refrigerator wouldn't quick cool and the first guy they sent out, who was an excellent service man, said that an orifice was bad. He bled it down and changed the orifice in it and the compressor was probably good. But the refrigerator didn't cool. The guy told me the second time that he remembered the first time they changed this compressor out. He said the compressors normally don't last for two years and that's about two years when they were back out here working on it.
It was on the seventh or eighth call that American Home Shield decided to replace it. The refrigerator that they replaced was $3,700. It was a high-end refrigerator and they offered me 1,700 for it. Also, I had to pay for twice out of the seven or eight times they came out. They closed the work order every time they came and they charged it back up like they really solved the problem. They're ripping people off.
The cooktop cracked one time and I called them out. They charged $100 to come out and send the guy out. I thought the cooktop should have been under my warranty, but they said if it shattered like that, they don't replace it but if it had quit working and it was something like that, they would. They made a call the first time and the guy explained what my coverage was. But with that refrigerator, they got a manager managing the process and he's constantly sending guys out here wasting American Home Shield money trying to not replace the refrigerator when those mechanics already know they're gonna end up having to replace the refrigerator.
Last year, I had my air conditioning system went out. When I called American Home Shield, I told them that I got a certified mechanic that come out. They were gonna give me $750 to change out a full-ton central air conditioning unit. If I had let them use Conway, who they used to come out and put the unit in, they were gonna spend $5,000.
Also, they're not training their customer service people enough or they're not sending them to the right department. American Home Shield gets hustled on both ends and I'm the person that's paying the warranty every month. I hate to see the quality of American Shield go down because I think they wanna do their customers right, but they feel like they're losing money in cases like that. I wonder if I should keep them.

The coil was leaking and I called American Home Shield. Comfort Pros came out and they were very good. They were helpful and professional and they did a good job. I'm very satisfied with AHS. They're at my house within the day and I don't have to wait four or five days. Within a half-hour after I put the claim in, I know who's coming. I know their phone number and I could contact them and make arrangements to make sure I'm home in the day. AHS is very prompt as far as their service goes. One of my friends where I used to live got them too when I told him how good I thought it was.

I called American Home Shield recently, and it went well. The tech was a very nice guy. We had to call a second time because the unit still wasn't quite right, but after he came the second time, it's been wonderful. However, we've been with American Home Shield for 16 years, and there's been a steady price increase over the years. I've been increasingly unhappy with the monthly charges. The amount is a bit concerning.

American Home Shield has been very responsive when we submit cases. Some of the subcontractors they use are less responsive or challenging at times, but for the most part, we have value for the money we've spent. They’ve replaced a couple of appliances that would have cost us way more had we not had AHS. So, I appreciate the service. I try and be more clear in defining the context of the issue and hopefully, we're getting a higher end of the subcontractors they use. Our experience has been very good overall. Eventually, we get things resolved but sometimes, it takes a little while.
On our recent claim, a tech came out and fixed part of our freezer. The icemaker wasn't working. That took a couple of trips, but the guy who came out and did the work was one of the better guys we've had. He was very helpful and did an amazing job. It's luck of the draw on who American Home Shield sends and what's being fixed. We've had experience with technicians where they weren't very good or we had some language barrier issues on some things. We've had a couple of technicians that were amazing, helpful, fast and knew exactly what the problem was. There wasn't a lot of going back and forth about whether something had to be replaced or not.

The refrigerator was not working, and unfortunately the contractor that American Home Shield chose to send this time was really bad. The day he came out, I told him that I needed my refrigerator because I have medication in the refrigerator that I need to keep cool. He said, “Well, that's up to American Home Shield to make it rush order.” I called American Home Shield and the problem was the tech took over a week to turn in his diagnosis. Then he came to put in a part and did not confirm that it was working, left, and said, “Oh, just check it in an hour.” It's not working still, so I'm almost a month without a refrigerator.
By the second week, they refunded me my service call but they said that we had to give him an opportunity, and I said, “Well, two weeks has been more than enough.” He finally got in touch with them because they escalated it. So then he requested a part, and within four days, he was out here again. I was out of town, and he just told my son, “Oh, check it in an hour” and left instead of verifying that everything was working. It was not cooling and the ice maker still don't work. So, I called and I asked him what was going on. He ordered another part so I had to wait until that part comes in. When he got the part in, instead of coming in that same day, he made me wait another day. I'm not happy with this technician because he hasn't gotten any part of my refrigerator up and running right.
American Home Shield has always been good. This is the first time I've had a bad apple with American Home Shield. Every time I've had a call with them, I've never had any problems. They've come back. They fixed it really quickly. If it wasn't under warranty, they've done a cash in lieu of. So, to me, the service is great. Unfortunately, the tech that they chose this last time was horrible. He was not professional enough.

Whenever I had issues, American Home Shield was quick to get a service person to come and look at the problem. My experience has been fairly good. They recently sent A-Fix. I had a noise coming from the refrigerator. The serviceman showed up, and he assessed the issue and said it was a compressor. The only issue I had with the whole thing was that the serviceman did not speak a word of English. He used a translator device on his phone, and I was never told about that ahead of time. When the unit came in, they came back and replaced the compressor. They weren't gonna take the old part, so I walked out to his service vehicle and I gave him the part. He rolled his eyes and asked if I couldn't put it in my recycle. I said, "No, you can take it." He rolled his eyes and he took it and drove off.
Everything was working fine after the repair but it was still making the noise and I'm not sure what the issue was. After the initial repair, they replaced it with a new compressor. They came back out again, and this guy determined that it was the ice maker that we don't use. It had been shut off. He said it was the ice maker pump that was making the noise, and he shut that off and it was okay.

The last time I had a service request through American Home Shield was for an electrical outlet in a small bedroom. When we would use the plug, the fuse would blow. The wires weren’t connected right in that one outlet. When the repairman came out, he knew exactly how to fix it and he did it the same day. It went fine. However, my experience with American Home Shield depends on what the appliance is. The person they sent out for my furnace said I needed a new liner. I talked to Home Shield and they did not wanna honor the service call unless I paid the person to do the liner. I knew I didn't need one ‘cause I had replaced one a couple years ago. We talked about a second opinion, then they reneged on me at being able to get a second opinion. In the end, it worked out fine because they honored my second opinion, saying that I did not need a liner.

United Air Temp is the primary company that American Home Shield uses for different things, and they are horrible. I have a splitter between my two sinks. American Home Shield knew it was a splitter 'cause I know it's a splitter and I'm not a plumber. The guy from United Air Temp stuck a snake up in there and he busted it open and water went everywhere. He tried to cover it up and he tore up some things in my house, including a cabinet. American Home Shield ended up paying me a bit of it, but I'm not dealing with United Air Temp ever again.
American Home Shield brought a different contractor out, 95 Appliance Services, and they were the bomb. They came from Maryland, and their plumber was a very nice and professional guy. He showed me certain things they needed to fix and some things that United Air Temp did wrong, and he fixed them. All in all, I have no problem with the claims submission process, but American Home Shield needs to really reconsider having a big contract with United Air Temp because they're lazy and do half the work. On the other hand, 95 Appliance Services is a great company.

You gotta do the patch yourself.” All the guy ended up doing was do a patch job, so we still have a knocky cooler and with corroded pads. The year before, our AC went out during the middle of summer, and it took about 10 days to get it fixed. We had one other claim as well. It was for a busted toilet and the plumbing company took quite a long time to fix it. Crispy Air is a really crappy outfit, and so is the plumbing company that Home Shield went through. When my dishwasher had overflowed, I submitted a claim through American Home Shield's website. It looked pretty easy to do. Then they gave me the name and the phone number of who would be contacting me. The contractor was excellent. I didn't have any problem at all. The tech said that I needed a new dishwasher. It was too old and not reparable. So I did my new appliance through American Home Shield's website. The process was average and I wouldn't do it again.
I ordered the dishwasher and then somebody just showed up one day to install it. I checked the dishwasher out, and we installed it. After it was all installed, the base plate was not there. They didn't have it. They promised me that they would order a new one and get it out to me, but I have yet to hear from them. It was installed on May 23rd and they installed it improperly. I did get ahold of them the next day to tell them they need to come out and fix it because I had a leak under my sink and the dishwasher didn't work. So whoever that was, American Home Shield should not use them again. That whole experience has not been fun for me.

I've had a couple of bad experiences with American Home Shield. When Sears finished with my stove, I had to trash it, get in debt and get a new stove. I called AHS and said, “You all sent Sears, and they done mess my stove up.” One time, the gas was so strong coming through that we called the fire department. It was two hours to snap on something that should have taken 10 minutes. And I knew right then I was in deep trouble.
The tech said he had to call his supervisor. He had his cell phone. They were recording. The supervisor walked him through it. But when they got through my stove, I had to go to Best Buy and get in debt and get myself another stove. I told AHS, “You would never send Sears out to do a job for me again because it messed me up.” Also, I asked them, “If you all don't have no one, everybody you call is busy, can I call someone and I have the same $100 deductible, whatever?” “Well, no, ma'am. We don't do that. I'm sorry.”
The other bad experience I had was two years ago. I only have one washroom and I had grandchildren here. My bathroom clogged up. So, I called AHS to get that fixed. They said they would send somebody out next week. I said, “What are we gonna do for a toilet for a whole week? Really?” I had to call somebody which AHS doesn't use.

We've called American Home Shield on several things, and we got immediate feedback and then they tell us that someone from the company that will be coming out to service would be getting in contact. American Home Shield sent a tech out to fix my dishwasher that was leaking, and they wouldn't fix it because they said they had to take the dishwasher out of the wall, and I would have to take it out myself. I refused to do that because I have been with American Home Shield for 30 years, and all of my kitchen appliances are built-in installed. So, when the company wouldn't take the dishwasher out, they were trying to hustle American Home Shield to get a new dishwasher. I told American Home Shield that my refrigerator had just been worked on the year before. This guy from JumpStart was the one that fixed it and took my refrigerator out of the wall and didn't charge extra for it. I fought with them over month before I finally got my dishwasher fixed because the first company was terrible telling me I had to pay to dig it out. I got with JumpStart, and they did a really good job.
I've had a couple of really bad experiences. I had one time a long time ago when a guy came out to fix my air conditioner. It needed the filter changed, and it wouldn't work. The first guy came out and wanted $800. So, I called a guy that my son recommended. He came over and said, "There's nothing wrong with your air conditioning. You just need to change the filter." My husband was not at home, and I didn't know it even had a filter in the ceiling of the house. Then the second bad experience had to do with this company that came out telling me I needed a new dishwasher, and I didn't need one. So finally, American Home Shield switched me over to JumpStart, but they fought it at first. They didn't wanna do it. They're hit and miss. They have been good with some things.

There was a big problem with our AC. A & R came out, they supposedly fixed it, then it wasn't fixed, and then they had to come out again. The people that bought our house had a lot of problems with it. It finally was fixed, but we ended up having to fix it out of our pockets because it was with our swamp cooler and they said that it wasn't up to them. A plumber had to come out. The plumber came out but couldn't fix it. They could repair part of it. It went back and forth between A & R and a plumber and then it was something else. We ended up having three different people come out. Even after the house was sold, we ended up having to have somebody else come and it was out of our pocket.
We've been with American Home Shield for almost 30 years. We bought the house that we sold 29 years ago and we have them now with this new house that we have. I'm hoping that we don't have the problems that we had with that house at the end. We had good service with AHS up until the swamp cooler issue. American Home Shield themselves did a good job. It was who they were sending out that would be the problem.
I have been telling my friends for years that American Home Shield was wonderful. When it went to do this house, I said, "American Home Shield was wonderful and I wanted to continue with them." However, this all happened in between selling that house and buying this one. I'm hoping that it's gonna be good because this is our forever house now. I'm hoping that American Home Shield is gonna come through. We were paying $80 a month before, which wasn't too bad considering that they had replaced a heater and a swamp cooler, a dishwasher and a few other items through the years. So, it seemed well worth it at that point.

I refused to cash-out the first time. The second time when I called AHS back about the information that they gave me, I wanted to do the cash-out. They said once I refused it, I could not do it again. I'm very upset. I am very disappointed in American Home Shield because I thought they were working with me and they were not.
Elite Heating and Air told me that being that my unit was a 2010 unit, it would be best for me to do a replacement. I said, "You know what? I'll call back and do American Home Shield to do a cash-out because I need to get a whole new system." American Home Shield denied me to do the cash-out. It was never explained to me that when you denied a cash-out, you couldn't go back and do it again. This is the first time I ever did a cash-out. They weren't supportive to me at all.
I still don't have air, and I'm trying to figure out how I could get the money to get a new unit in my house. If the stipulations of doing a cash-out was explained to me, then I would have known what I was doing. Meanwhile, AHS still didn't help me. I had someone contact them to let them know that it'd be best for me to get a new unit being that it was a 2010 unit that's in my house. American Home Shield owes me 700 plus dollars because the insurance is supposed to pay me back for my washing machine. They've been holding on to it since February. They've decided, "Oh, well, you have to buy a new one and then we give you the money." "How about, no? I don't have to cash out anything." I had a washing machine and they suddenly decided it couldn't be fixed.
In the last couple of years, their level of service has gone down a lot. When you've asked for someone to come, it would take a while. I had somebody who came to fix the toilet because it was continually flushing, but they never fixed it. They said, "Oh, well, your house is dirty." That's got nothing to do with it. I live on a golf course. So, we occasionally get a bug in and they were like, "That was the reason." The people from American Home Shield are very polite, but they don't do as much as they should. They really need to pay me for this washing machine. We had agreed $760. It's not shown up.
AHS upped their game in some terms but what their reps are doing is just covering themselves. "Oh, were we understandable?" They have very strong accents. They're just plugging in for those pieces that they're required to fill. It's not always good. I've had two houses that were covered with AHS until this year. I didn't really use the one house very much because it was where my kid was living while she was in college. They were okay in the Tempe address. When she was in Tempe, I was having to drive all the way there to be there for an appointment. It doesn't help that the reps are in the Philippines. They were kind of available for those calls day and night, but I couldn't rave about them.
I love hardworking people who do what they're supposed to do. AHS seems to have gone down a lot lately. Maybe it's the contractors that are working for them. There used to be bigger contractors who were doing that, but now it's smaller people who aren't necessarily as good. A couple of them were very good. I had a couple of issues with a ceiling fan in the Tempe house, and the guy who came for that was awesome.
Thank you for sharing your feedback. I'd like to apologize for not meeting your expectations. Please know that our team will be using your feedback to prevent this from happening again in the future.

American Home Shield has done a lot of repairs and stuff for me and I'm really happy with them. They've replaced two televisions, because I have the electronic package, and they've fixed the dishwasher and refrigerator a couple of times. Everybody else has always been really good and I have no problem with any of the people they send out. Recently, Alfa Appliances came out twice because the first time they came out, they didn't fix the issue. A second guy came out and he fixed it perfectly. But I had to pay again because it was over 30 days. It cost me $250 because it's $125 the first time they came out and I had to pay the $125 again to have them come back.
I'd tell others that they should have American Home Shield because they're really good. I never have a problem getting ahold of somebody and they've been very forthcoming. Also, most of the companies don't have the same things that American Home Shield does. They're the only ones that I found that had the electronics package, where you could pay and it covers your electronics as well as your appliances. That was a big thing for us.

We had two different people come out for our claim. The first one who came out said that we needed a whole new central air unit and furnace. We waited for a while to hear anything from anybody and then finally, we called to see what was going on. AHS said that they were sending out someone else to take a look at it and they sent out another guy for a second opinion. The tech put Freon in and then put a part in, which was all we needed. The contractors were pleasant. They told us everything that they were doing, why it was needed, and explained it to us.
I also had a claim for my dishwasher and they came out and fixed it. It did the same thing within 30 days so I called them back. They came out and they said as long as it was within the 30 days, they’d come back out and look at it again. They said it couldn't be fixed, so they bought us a brand new one comparable to the one that we already had at no charge. We like AHS very well. They do good at what they do and it helps people. It helps cover the cost and I'm glad we have it.

American Home Shield is the worst company I have ever dealt with. They have poor communication with getting back to their customers. Their cash-in-lieu department is reprehensible. And the fee to cancel your contract when you have received absolutely nothing from them is disgusting. I wouldn't recommend this company to my worst enemy.

I was not happy with my experience dealing with American Home Shield. I had three different technicians come over the course of 4 weeks and they couldn't agree with what was wrong with my dishwasher. Then it took forever to order the part. I was frustrated so I called to cancel my plan, the person I spoke with, in member resolutions, offered to give me 4 months without being charged if I kept my plan with them. She said that it was too late to cancel my July payment which was going to be pulled in 3 days but that I should see a credit for that a few days later. That did not happen. I called back and spoke to member resolutions again and was told that I would not get that amount back. It was then that I said I wanted to just cancel my plan and I did.

My washing machine went out in February and a tech from May Heating & Air came in. He looked at it, took a picture, and said I was getting a new washing machine. He wasn't here five minutes. I asked if it couldn't be fixed and he said they don't work on Samsung appliances. They knew what kind of washing machine it was before he came out and if they don't work on Samsung appliances, then he knew that before he came. He just came on a service call just to do it so they could get paid.
Then, in April, my air went out and American Home Shield scheduled for May Heating & Air to come out and the tech that came out was the same guy who looked at my washing machine. He stayed out there for a long time and changed out some stuff on the air condition. It didn't work and he said it was a power surge. I called AHS and they said they didn't cover a power surge but I don't think it's a power surge. We haven't had any bad weather or anything recently. I said I'd like to get a second opinion and they said okay.
They called Guaranteed Services from Anderson, South Carolina, about an hour away from here. They came and they said they had to go behind May Heating & Air all the time who always misdiagnoses stuff. They said my air condition compressor was gone and my coils were rusted out. They said I needed a new unit and it was a normal wear and tear. Then, AHS said they gotta send May Heating & Air back out here because they said that it was a power surge.
In the meantime, since we're going back and forth about whether it's a power surge or not and American Home Shield said that they didn't cover a power surge, I called my homeowners insurance. They said they cover the power surge so they sent their own person out here. The person said it was normal wear and tear and the coils and the compressor were bad.
May Heating & Air came back in June and I asked the tech if he let AHS know that the unit was bad and that I needed a new unit. He said he did and he told them that they got a customer sitting there with no air condition. Every time that somebody came and looked at it, American Home Shield never called me to say anything to me. I always call them and every time I call, they go, "Oh, let me get you to escalations." I could never just talk to the person. Finally, I got through to the escalation people and they gave me a number to call direct.
Then the guy from May Heating & Air, when he came out the last time, said that it was just the compressor, but he told me that the coils were bad. He went back to the office and told them that it was just the compressor and I have pictures of the coils that were rusted out. I called AHS back and they said I cleaned the coil and I was not supposed to and that's why it rusted out. I had full knee replacement surgery on January 31st, I didn't clean anything. I didn't appreciate them accusing me of going up there and doing that.
By this time, I had been dragged around. I told them everybody said that the compressor was bad and I asked how much will they give me towards a new unit because I gotta have some air. They said they could only give me a thousand dollars. They said I don't have the top plan that replaces the entire unit but as far as I knew, I had the top plan. They said that two years ago, they came up with another plan that covers the full replacement but nobody ever told me this. How was I supposed to know this? When I signed up, I signed up for the top plan so I could cover all my electronics, appliances and stuff in my house.
I told them it's gonna cost $8,000 to $10,000 to replace the unit and a thousand dollars wasn't gonna do anything. I said I might as well let them fix it and they asked if I didn't want the money in lieu and I said no. They wouldn't let me choose who to fix it and if it was up to me, I would let Guaranteed Services fix it. They said I need to call May Heating & Air, which I did, and they said it's gonna be $1,600 for the Freon. I told them I got a friend that I play golf with that's an HVAC guy who told me that he could get me that Freon for maybe $100 and they said I gotta use their Freon. It was like they were just hell bent on charging me $1,600 for Freon.
I got a fourth guy to come out here to fix my unit because I was tired of it. I got my unit fixed in July and when the guy took the old unit apart, there were parts on the unit that was still in the box and they were hooked up to the unit. It was a possible fire hazard. Nobody had worked on that unit but May Heating & Air. Also, I tried to go back to the cash in lieu and AHS said I couldn't do that. I went to see a lawyer and the lawyer said they can't do that to me. If they offered me cash in lieu, just because I said no doesn't mean I can't change my mind. If I wanna go back and take cash in lieu, they should have given it to me. I need to come up with some paperwork and the emails and they're gonna see whether they're gonna take my case or not.
This is dead wrong how AHS has done me. It's very disheartening and disappointing. Also, we've had pretty decent service out of AHS but my payments went from $77 a month to $97 a month. I never approved for them to do that. I didn't even realize that the price had changed. It was automatically taken out of my account.
Thank you for sharing your feedback. I'd like to apologize for not meeting your expectations. Please know that our team will be using your feedback to prevent this from happening again in the future.

The last experience I had with American Home Shield was good but I've been with them for many years and over the years, I've had several bad experiences with them. My microwave broke and I had to pay $100 for someone to come out. They said it was not normal wear and tear so they didn't cover it. I've had the same microwave for 15 years and I don't know what normal wear and tear is considered because if it doesn't have an issue for 15 years, that's normal wear and tear. So, that upset me. I still had to pay $100 for the tech to come out and the almost $100 monthly payment. So, that was a waste of money. And then another time, it was an electrical issue.
The problem I don't like is AHS picks the company for you and when I look them up online, it's always a bad one that has terrible reviews. I asked if I could choose somebody else and they said no. I wish they had better companies to choose from because I don't want someone coming into my house that has terrible reviews. One time, there was a guy who looked at my washer and he tried to get me to pay him directly to upgrade the washer, which I didn't wanna do. Then, he wouldn't return my call. When I made the complaint to American Home Shield and asked them to send someone else, the guy called me something bad. So, I told American Home Shield and I asked how they could send somebody like this out to my house and how they could deal with a company like this. They never did anything about it.
It was horrible and I was scared. He knew where I lived and I’m a single woman. He also said he was gonna put in a bad review so AHS will never send anyone out to me anymore. He was threatening me just because I didn't wanna use him. But he was going outside of American Home Shield’s contract. I just wanted it fixed. Then when I read the reviews about him, everyone else said the same thing, that he's a scam artist. So, I don't understand where American Home Shield gets these people from. They should get more reputable companies to do the service.
This year might be my 13th year in this house so things are starting to go bad. When they go bad, they're not gonna wanna fix it. I have AHS for security and protection if it’s something big. But I don't feel confident that they're going to cover the things that break. It was horrible and I was so upset. I remember trying to call them and they wouldn't answer the phone or put me on hold forever. You can contact them right away if you wanna make an appointment. But if you wanna call to talk to a person about a problem, it's almost impossible to get ahold of them. Most recently, my daughter's sink was dripping and I had a great experience with AHS. The company they used came right out and fixed it. So, it's hit-or-miss if you get a good company or not. But I've had more bad than good.
I understand your frustration and appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to contact us at consumeraffairs@ahs.com so we can talk more about your experience.

American Home Shield in general is super expensive. They go up every year and don't give long-time customers any sort of discount. I was with them for seven years and canceled my contract last month. I got three years for the price of one year with American Home Shield and the service fees are 50% of what they were with American Home Shield.

Appliance Agent was a very good contractor and we've had the tech several times before. They’re one of the best and I highly recommend them. They looked at a refrigerator and they were able to diagnose the repairs. They were quite thorough. The parts that were necessary for a very old refrigerator were no longer available and American Home Shield acted on it right away after the contractor submitted his diagnosis of the product. AHS was able to replace the refrigerator so I was pleased with them.
We had an issue with the stove not heating properly and we had one contractor come out. That first contractor AHS sent out didn’t do much of anything other than clean the stove and the stove continued to not function properly. The second service contractor that came out was Sears. They diagnosed the problems but the replacement parts they ordered came in damaged. And we're having a difficult time getting the contractor back here to install the new parts. After several calls, we contacted American Home Shield and they contacted the contractor. Supposedly, they're gonna come by tomorrow and do the service.
I wasn't too happy with this particular contractor because even though they diagnosed the problem correctly and got the part in right away, they had an appointment with us and they didn't show up on Friday, which was July 26th. They came by on July 27th and noticed we weren't home. We had to call them back on Monday and set up another appointment for Thursday. I've dealt with Sears before and I've had issues with them about not being punctual on the approximate time of arrival. AHS needs to work with that particular contractor on punctuality a little bit. They're a good contractor. It's just that the punctuality is limited.
American Home Shield overall is very good. If they can't repair an item, they replace it, which I'm pleased with. But I'm not too happy with their service fees. It was 50 when I first started with them, to $75 and then to $100. It is a little costly considering you're paying about $150 for a policy. So that's disturbing. They need to be a little bit more competitive on their service fees and lessen it a bit. They’re a little bit out of line on the price but their idea is that it's not gonna cost unless we need them and we pay the $100 service fee. A lot of people aren't gonna call because of the service fee and then, they need AHS to repair. AHS is not the worst nor the best but they're good.
When you're 72 years old, you're used to using a telephone and I prefer calling because I'm always confused with the website. There's always a prompt you gotta hit and if you miss that one prompt, you can't continue. It kinda stops. So I find it easier and faster to get on the phone and call somebody. I like the idea that they answer on the phone in a very prompt manner. They're very good at that. They won't let you hang for 15 minutes. Usually, within 10 minutes, they respond to our phone call, ask proper questions and try to set you up with a contractor. The only problem I have with that is that they have a computer that assigns the contractor and I'd rather not do that. I'd rather have a contractor that I've worked with in the past. I ask for that particular contractor to come back if I have an additional repair for the same appliance. In that respect, I'd rather talk to a person about that.

I started a claim with American Home Shield 48 days ago. They assigned a local repair service to assess and repair my refrigerator. The necessary parts have not been shipped nor, as far as I know, even been manufactured. AHS told me to call them if the parts had not arrived by July 22, and they would authorize a replacement. That was 2 weeks ago. I have called several times since then. Their call center in India tells me I have to wait another 72 hrs. before a determination can be made; then they say I will be contacted within 24 hrs. When, after another 72 hrs. I still have received their call, I contact them again. Once again they tell me someone will call within 24 hrs. Every time I speak with their call center in India it seems that I am starting from scratch. Back in September of last year, we had a gas leak in the house. Foxcroft came out and the tech lit a lighter where it was at. I don't know if he turned the gas on and from the way it looks, he didn't. But he said it was repaired. I called the gas company back out and it was not fixed. I don't even think the Foxcroft tech did anything on the furnace and he came dressed up and wasn't dressed in work clothes.
We had three gas leaks in the house at one time and every time we call American Home Shield for repairs on the furnace, they try to send me to Foxcroft. That was after me telling them, "If Foxcroft comes on my property, I will call the sheriff's office and have them removed because of the incident I had back in September with them." They said I would have to wait but I pay that $100 so I should have a right to say who I want on my property. It's always Foxcroft that they send out. They said they're the only ones available on weekends but I don't want them on my property. Last time I had a claim, I tried to explain to the representative about what happened in September and it was like, "Oh, well, we can't help you then." Other than that, submitting a claim is easy for me and customer service has been good except for when they send Foxcroft. I get upset because they're not taking my safety in consideration.

This company is a waste of time and money. I have not had a successful repair get covered by American Home Shield. The most recent “partial approval“ which only means they agree that a repair is needed, but they won’t cover the cost. I tried to dispute the reason for non coverage as they claimed it was not due to normal wear and tear despite being an 18 year old unit and they said there is basically no process to dispute. They stand by the decision to not cover the repair and there’s nothing you can do about it. Don’t waste your money. They will tell you anything to get you to buy the package but they do not stand by the promises made. Each service request is a hundred dollars and they will always find a reason not to cover the repair.

I've been with American Home Shield for 15 years and back in the day, it was an awesome company. I've even sent people to their way. This last time wasn't too bad. But a couple of times before that, it was horrible. Last summer, I went without air conditioner for two months. The company that they sent came out seven times. They kept on blowing a fuse. They even told us they were gonna leave us some fuses so we could go up there and change them when they blew. I ended up going out and having to try to buy me some window units to help keep my disabled mom and myself cool. I got my AC fixed and paid for it out of pocket. American Home Shield told me they'd credit my $75 back. That took four and a half months to get that back.
I tried to go online and post comments. I tried to get with supervisors and asked for someone to please call me back. But I would not get called back. It was the most horrible experience I've ever had with a home warranty company. When it came time to renew, I told them to cancel my policy. They said, "We'll give you another two months at no charge." They could do it if they want to, but I'm leaving them. My air conditioning went out and the company that American Home Shield dispatched to me called me and said they couldn't get out here for a whole week. I realize it's summertime and everybody's AC is going out but we were at about 100 degrees all week that week. We called back to American Home Shield, and after we argued with them for a while, they called another company. They came the next day and fixed it. It was low on freon and the guy was here 10 minutes. But if I hadn't initiated that phone call and raised hell, I would have had to wait a whole week to get another company called.
I started looking for another home warranty company because that's crazy when they do stuff like that to us. I've been with them for over 20 years and that was another part of my gripe I gave them. They've been great in some respect, but sometimes, they get under my skin and I have to raise a little hell with them. Also, the rates keep going up, let alone my yearly rate to be with them. I had my hot water heater replaced here a few months ago, and it was a $75 service charge. Now when I called the AC guy, it's up to $100 service charge.
If you go on their website, you can put in a work order quickly. The only thing is if you do that, you get whoever they send out. They send you the first guy that's available when you put in a work order and while some contractors are good, some are not. I would have to call them and specifically say who I wanted. I had an AC guy that I absolutely was in love with that was coming for the last four years. But he no longer works those contracts with American Home Shield, so he's not an option for me anymore.

I've always been happy with American Home Shield. But sometimes the wait for a part is a little bit longer depending on the company that I'm using. Magic Appliances, the one I had recently, is one of the good ones. I have a certain booklet where I keep everything of all the repairs that I've done through the years and I have made notations on there saying which ones I should use.
I've been an AHS customer for many years and I understand the prices of everything is going up. But they went up $18 from the original payment. I was paying 70 some dollars and now, I'm paying 100, plus 100 when the techs come to my door. So, that's $200 for them to service me which is steep. I am seriously considering going to another establishment because the prices are outrageous.

It's wonderful to have insurance. We claim several times a year, and I really like American Home Shield. There is one thing missing, though, and that is that some of the suppliers that do the work for American Home Shield are simply terrible. On the other hand, some of them are simply phenomenal. There has been a couple of examples.
We have five air conditioning units because we have a very large house, and a guy came over by the name of Ja-run. He spent a good hour on the air conditioning unit, and then threw his hands up and said, “This thing is too old to be fixed. You need a new unit. I'll sell you a new unit for 13,000.” I said, “Look, all we wanted is we just want it fixed.” He said, “It can't be fixed. There's too many things wrong with it, including the pump.” He ordered over $1,000 in parts for our air conditioning unit. I couldn't believe what a scam it was, and I really made a stink about it.
We called a firm called Happy Bear. A single guy runs it, and when he came over, he said, “Oh, the guy reversed the wiring on your unit.” He fixed the wiring, and within 5 or 10 minutes, he fixed our AC. Ja-run was a total scammer. He did not know what he was doing and did not do what he needed to, but Happy Bear did, so we really like Happy Bear. The one negative thing with American Home Shield is we can't ask for a specific service to come out and help us. It was especially difficult because my grandchildren were staying over and it was 110 degrees. It was that longest stretch of heat. We didn't have AC for two weeks because American Home Shield could not get it fixed.
The other example was a gentleman came to work on our water heating system and he was extremely rude. He said, “I'm not gonna give you a Jew down price.” I looked at him and said, “Excuse me, sir. We're Jewish. You need to leave my house immediately.” He threatened that if I said anything, he'd come back and cause problems for us. So I didn't report it to American Home Shield. I went out, ordered the parts from Amazon, and did the job myself. Business model-wise, I know it’s not something American Home Shield can change, but being able to at least put a name or two on the priority list of service companies we like would be phenomenal. I always tip them at least 50 or 100 bucks. I treat them like gold, and they love doing my house, but they don't get the call.

I have been with American Home Shield about eight years, and I have referred them to other people as well. I like the peace of mind of having it with the homes and things that could happen, and the fact that when I needed the service, they've been prompt and efficient in taking care of business. Recently, I submitted a claim wherein the initial issue was that the line up in the air conditioner, at the pan, was frozen. The service people came out and took care of that, and then as they inspected my outside unit, they said that sometimes people get that cleaned. So, to prevent any later problems, they suggested to me about cleaning and I took that. They cleaned out my air condition outside and the vents.
Submitting the claim was very simple to me, especially going by phone. The person at American Home Shield was very professional, asking me questions as to what I needed and guiding me 'cause I wasn't explaining it well, and then we got it all straight away. The contractor that came out was Service Pro, and the guy was very good. He told me what had to go on. The first jump was going in and drying everything out and then coming back and doing the work there. They had a good inspection 'cause we had a wooden floor in my bedroom there, but that was not damaged. They looked at it and checked it in a couple of days of the drying process, then they came out and did what they had to do. They also had a subcontracted guy out and he did the ceiling and all the painting and repainted the wall. I was very satisfied.

My dishwasher broke down in early May 2024 and I have the home warranty plan with American Home Shield. So my husband I notified them. They gave me someone, but it was a 4-day wait. Then on May 15th I received a visit from the company that was going to do the repair, the technician said he was going to order the part and then return to schedule the exchange, at the end of May 15 days after the visit since I did not receive contact, I discovered that the company also did not fail to respond to the call from American Home Shield and no one let me know; Then on June 17th another company visited and said "they had repaired my dishwasher". Just (One) 1 day after the repair the problem returned even more serious.
So it has been more than 1 month that I need to wash dishes every day. On July 20th, the company tried to repair it again, but they didn't do it because the technician said he didn't know exactly where the problem was coming from. Every time I tried to use the dishwasher, the basement got completely wet, and it could even compromise the structure of the house, given the amount of water that leaked. We contacted America Home Shield, and once again a call was opened for the company, which said it didn't know how to repair the dishwasher, to come and visit us.
We've been in the 3rd month, and I noticed that America Home Shield isn't concerned with simply solving the problem. This is frustrating because the contract we have was supposed to cover repairs, including to the roof, but we couldn't get the attention to solve a simple problem with a dishwasher. Everybody that had to come out is crooked. They overpriced some things and it was, "See you." Didn't speak English, got smart when I explained to them that the other company freaked out, tried to rip me off and overprice some stuff and didn't realize that I used good common sense God instilled in us. I got on Home Depot app and brought up the item as they were talking about it and saw that they overshot. And the tech's no-English speaking butt would have enough good English to say, "If you feel that way, you could go down there and do it yourself." I said, "And you could get the hell off my property."
American Home Shield would redeem themselves with finally changing out my AC, but that took forever. They sent out the electric guy. He was good other than not answering my calls when I called them back for other stuff. The appliance people don't want a bad record, so they know how to treat people. Brad knew how to treat people. But the other ones were trash because the only thing they do is band-aid stuff. I had two outside authorizations on that AC. One, I held off on because of the sermon. I wanted a second opinion. Called them and told them to hold off. The guy asked for the order number. I'm not giving it to him because I don't know if I'm going with him.
I had someone else to come out. Both of them gave me the same diagnosis and it was a Freon leak. So putting two and two together, it dawned on me to look up the effect, and how could you tell. I wasn't looking for the effect on me. I was looking for what could I notice in the unit that it was leaking, and came across irritation of eyes, short breath, lethargic, all these other symptoms. I was hospitalized four times this past month. And getting into this one, I had to go back. So, it was five times within the two months, the end and the beginning. That could have been what was causing all the stuff that I was going through. I had to call and the biggest joke that was placed on us all besides proving to a AI that I'm human, to press one for English and I get sitting across the country, across the water, to speak to somebody who doesn't understand me and I could barely understand them, and they wanna stick to the script and give me a hard time.
After the hospital thing, my AC went out. I sit here paying $60-something almost a day to put in a generator for the fuel to have it to run. And thank God I have my RV to stay in and me and both of my two dogs. One little sassy girl got on the phone with me. It was quite a few because they was hanging up on me too. Once they found out it was me, they would hang up. Almost at the tail end of that, this girl would gets on and try to do a cognitive assessment on me and pick a fight. "You've been rude, you keep calling, making all these calls." And I would say, "You damn right. That's what I'm supposed to do." "But you're rude."
"Rude? You guys are hanging up on me. And I'm out of AC, telling you guys all what I'm going through and I'm still pulling teeth with you guys. And then you wanna cancel my outside authorization to send one of your crooks over here as I got two assessment done for the diagnosis, and then you're gonna let the one that I told you not to let go through and refuse the one that I chose, which was inexpensive? And I'm rude and you're doing a cognitive assessment on me? You got life twisted."
She said she would refuse to send somebody over here because they look at me as being aggressive. She didn't feel comfortable of sending anybody through here. That was a lame duck. She picked that fight with me to say what she would say and to go up to a higher-up to refuse to send somebody over here that I had no problem with. I just told them, "Don't send the crooks that you've been sending." Did they push the envelope and reimburse me for a portable AC and this, that, and the other? Yeah. After my blood pressure went up as I was insulted, as I had to act out. I've been dealing with them since Landmark and was promised when I went over to them it would be different, but and it wasn't.

Updated on 08/09/2024: My AC UNIT went out on an extreme hear day, 116° I'm over 70 with lots of health issues, all I kept getting was that I had to wait for the repair response. And that it was Saturday. I can't decide what day it would go out. I waited 36 hours and several calls and no response. I agreed to the reimbursement plan and got it repaired within an hour. I guess high ticket items are not in their best interest. At my age and health it was unacceptable for their actions. I have submitted the invoice and now I have to wait for them to pay me back.
Original: I have been waiting for 18 hours for them to fix my AC, it's 116° out and it's a Saturday. The contractor probably won't call me until Monday. Another 36 hours without AC in the arizona desert, did I mention that I'm over 70 and nowhere to go to get cool with my service dog!

We have used a handful of different people. They're fine. There's one company that had no idea what they were doing. And we have had that happen before where I said, “No, don't send them again because they were not helpful.” But American Home Shield would ask, “How about this company?” And that would be fine. We like the ease. Part of it is we would look at changing, but because it's easy not to mess with it, we haven't. But there are a lot of times when things are not covered, which would be any company we choose. There is always something so they would not have to cover it. And trying to get a human on the phone is always hard. They don't seem sympathetic to issues. We've had to call American Home Shield back and forth for the same issue multiple times on an air conditioning unit. They are very cut and dry. “This isn't the way it is, so thanks for calling,” kind of thing, “And bye.”
We've had an issue with plumbing before. If I did it online, it would only allow me to put in one issue. But oftentimes, since I'm paying $100 to have them come out, I would call to say, “We have two different bathrooms that are having two different issues. Since y'all are coming out, I'd like to pay one $100 fee and have y'all fix all these issues.” They cap them at two or three issues, and it's, “You're already here. Can you not just deal withit?” They want me to pay another $100 to come back out. It has always been that way since we've used them. I've just gotten smart where I would call because online, I couldn't put multiple things. But if I called them, I could. I only found that out because we had to do it once, and the lady said, “If you call, we can list multiple things.”

We had an electrical issue and it took them a couple of weeks to find a contractor that would come in and do it based on their price and even after they assigned it, it took another couple of weeks for that person to actually come out and deal with it. When the contractor came out, they didn't quite finish the job because we found more issues after they left. Before that, we had a plumbing issue and the person that looked at it took the $100 payment and said, "Sorry, we can't do a damn thing," and left. We had to pay out of pocket to have a different plumber come out and fix the problem because it wasn't covered by Home Shield. I don't think they're paying enough to get a good contractor out here that's going for regular rates. They're going for cheap rates. It takes them a long time to get someone out here to do anything. For the plumbing issue, we had plenty of plumbers in the area, but none of them would do it for the rate they were quoting. But the rest of the time, they get people out reasonably quick.

But the subcontracting afterwards to do the other work aside from fixing the busted pipe was horrible. But the reps at American Home Shield has always been very cordial. American Home Shield has worked for us. We haven't had any needs that were not met. We pay $100 for service that covers a lot of things that may happen that would cost thousands of dollars. The only challenge that we usually run into with American Home Shield is not having enough of their vendors be available as soon as possible.

I had a bad water heater. I submitted a claim with AHS and things went fine with the contractor that they sent out, except for the two additional charges that they stuck on there that I thought were covered by insurance, but they told me they weren't. There was a $200 disconnect-the-gas-line fee and a $200 drain-the-water heater fee. AHS might consider making it more obvious that there are additional hook-up fees or unhook-up fees. They paid for the temperature valve which was bad and they replaced it. But the two hook-up fees cost me 425. American Home Shield's price has also gone up over the years in inflation and it's getting close to being pretty high.
Aside from that, the plumber that AHS used, although he was really good, wanted cash. I told him that he had to be the only cash business in the entire world. I also felt uncomfortable giving the repairman a check because I was not sure it was going to get to the right place. Other than that, the plumber and his service were great. I got an appointment in less than 12 hours and after he came out, it took about four days to get the valve.

I express my deep dissatisfaction with the service received regarding the order to diagnose and repair a ceiling fan. The first technician sent declared that he did not have an adequate ladder to perform the job. After contacting customer service, I was not charged the $85 service fee, and another company was sent. The second technician arrived, stayed for approximately 30 seconds, and left without performing the diagnosis. I contacted customer service again, and this time, I was charged $85 and another electrical company was assigned.
The third technician who arrived informed us that we needed to rent a ladder for him to perform the job. This is unacceptable, as it is expected that technicians bring their own tools. This technician also left without doing the work. When I contacted customer service again to request a refund of the $85, I was informed that a refund was not possible because the technician had performed the diagnosis, which is not true. Additionally, I ended up purchasing the fan that American Home Shield was supposed to provide. The only thing the technician had to do was install the new one. I find this situation unacceptable and bordering on fraud.

American Home Shield has been my go-to person for any issues with my house maintenance. I always use their website and it is excellent. Also, the customer service that I have received has been top-notch, so far. I had really good service persons who helped to clarify the problem and to resolve it. But I had few instances where the few service providers are not customer friendly and they just wanted to do some quick fixes and go soon. So it depends on which service provider is assigned.
Recently, I could not open the garage door, so a ticket was raised online. I got the service provider assigned within a day and the service person arrived after four days. He visited then he ordered the part, and it took another four days to fix the garage door. All in all, it took around 10 days to fix everything. I asked them what would happen in case something breaks out of that within a year and they said there is a coverage for a year. So if something breaks or fails to work, the service provider is going to come and have a look on that.

They just dragged their feet, but once I escalated the problem, they resolved it immediately. There are some really good companies on their roster, but they also have somebody that doesn't know what they're doing. Even if somebody has a bachelor's degree or a master's degree, it doesn't mean that they're great at what they're doing. There was one company that came a year ago, and they told me everything was fine with my washer. Those guys should be taken off the roster. Somebody else came and replaced a big piece of concrete inside the washer and it was worse. Finally, we got somebody that knew what they were talking about and that issue was resolved.

We've been American Home Shield customers since we bought the house, which has been about six years, and we're not happy with them. We can't seem to get anything done. Our air conditioning unit started going out on us on the 4th of July, and we're still in the process of trying to get it fixed. We've already paid to have another air conditioning company come out and even give us a diagnosis on it, which said that our compressor is bad.
Today, I talked to American Home Shield and they said, "The diagnosis that we got from our contractor was that your compressor just needed to be clean. So, if you'll pay $240 extra, they'll come out and clean and change the hoses. And that should fix the problem." I said, "That's not gonna fix the problem. We've been diagnosed with the compressor being bad." They said, "Well, let us do this first and then pay that. And then if it doesn't fix the problem, call us back." We can't get anything done very quickly at all. It's always a long process.
We weren't happy with the last guy that came out that was supposed to do the diagnosis on the air conditioning too. He didn't turn the paperwork in or said he lost the paperwork, then when we called American Home Shield, they said, "Well, we're gonna call the company and get the information." It's been about three weeks and they still haven't gotten the correct information. So now they're guessing at what they're doing. All in all, it hasn't been a good process, and American Home Shield has not been a good company.

With American Home Shield, people can't assume they cover everything 'cause they don't. They have some unusual situations on things that they don't cover and people don't find that out until the company has sent the person out here and he's looked at what the problem is. I've only had that happen one time. So for the majority of the time, American Home Shield has been reliable. Recently, I requested service for a pool pump. The electrical cord had shorted out inside the sheath that it was covered in and, therefore, the tech had to run a new wire from the outlet to the switch. He did that, and it worked great.

Once, our appliance went out and it was 30 below, and AHS couldn't find a contractor. So, that was a tough one. We had put in electric heaters so that our pipes wouldn't freeze. They really need more contractors willing to work with them, but they're great to work with otherwise. There was one contractor whom I gave a poor review. He was saying my microwave was cracked and chipped from misuse, and it wasn't. It was from steam, and he never came to look at it. He wanted a picture. The only thing I hate about American Home Shield is I got to pay additional money when I'm paying money every month. I don't call every month, so I don't feel I should have to pay additional money. Every time they have somebody come out, I shouldn't have to pay because I've already paid. Sometimes the contractors that they're working with aren't the most reliable, and what's frustrating is that they seem to not cover things. Reviewed Aug. 2, 2024
We've had houses for the last 30 years and we generally have American Home Shield. I've never been thrilled with the program. I'm not sure it's worth it, especially in our financial situation now where we can afford to pay for anything. We don't need AHS or anybody else to help pay a bill. And what we pay in versus what we get back, I'm not convinced is worth it at all. So, I seriously considered dropping AHS on all the houses we own now. The main thing is simply what we pay in versus what we get back in value. For example, we had to replace one of the central air conditioning systems in one of the houses last fall and, of course, AHS doesn't pay 100% of the cost and our share of the cost was over $3,000. We could have bought the whole system for $5,000 or $6,000.
If we have a dryer that went out, for example, AHS would pay for it, but they wouldn't pay if the problem is lightning struck your house or something in the outlet that the dryer was plugged into malfunctioned, I would have to replace the outlet. AHS wouldn't pay to replace the outlet. They would pay for the dryer, but I would have to pay the electrician to redo the outlet. They rarely pay 100% of the cost of anything.
And what they don't pay, with the case of central air, is significant. We have replaced two central air systems and paid over $3,000 towards the cost of each. And what I have to pay for, the vendors charge outrageous numbers. The last system, the vendor required us to replace everything in the system, all the wiring, the box that hangs on the wall, the fuse box, cables, everything. And the vendor wanted $200. I could go buy the part that the vendor wanted $200 for at Lowe's for $25. And the vendor told me when I complained about some of these costs, "The reason we, the vendor, charge you so much is because AHS doesn't pay us enough to replace the system. So we get the balance that we want back by charging you."
I found that if it was a simple thing, like if my washer broke down and they couldn't get the parts and they have to replace it, they would pay 100% of the cost of the washing machine and replacing it. It's just taking the old one out and plugging a new one in. It's simple and hooking the water lines up. A moron could do that and they would do that when they install it.
They would tell they would offer me an upgrade or a free replacement that is comparable to the machine I have. And I have the option as a customer to pay extra to upgrade to what they consider a machine that is better than the machine I have, that has more features, some feature my machine doesn't have. I found myself arguing with them once. They said they looked into it and they agreed, but I had a microwave oven that had a simple shelf in it, and it broke but they wanted to replace it with a microwave without a shelf.
I said, "That's not the same microwave." They said, "What's different about yours?" I said, "It has a shelf." Someone looked at the model and said, "Yours does have a shelf. So we'll give you this microwave instead." I hardly had a problem that I'm satisfied with. There would be something about almost everything, whether it was the promptness of AHS, replying to a question, getting to the right person, getting to the right department, or the speed of getting a replacement part.
If it involves a replacement of any kind or a major part of any kind, there would always be a problem of one sort or another. Eventually, it would get taken care of, but I find them difficult. It's not worth it, especially on the major things like central air. If I have to pay $3,300, $3,500 and the whole system installed is 5,000 and I could get it done myself very quickly instead of waiting two weeks for a vendor to get the system that AHS ordered, I sometimes just call someone I know and say, "Can you come out and take care of this?" and I just pay them.
AHS does what they say. If it's not an emergency and I could wait, they were fine. We had a washing machine break and someone came out and looked at it and ordered a part. The vendor ordered and we waited a week or two for the part to come in, but it was the wrong part. They had to reorder it, it came in and they tried to install it, but it still didn't fix the problem. That was when AHS said, "We'll replace it," which they did.
If you don't mind going through all that rigmarole and taking your wash to the laundromat for a couple of weeks instead of washing it in your home, that may be fine. But that sort of thing isn't what I need. The only reason I'm considering dropping AHS is we could easily afford to do the work ourselves. I just told my wife a little while ago, "You realize we're paying AHS almost $4,000 a year for those three houses total?" We could replace anything for $4,000 and it's not worth it. The only time I thought that contract is worth it, is if something like central HVAC goes down.
I have to pay for ductwork modifications. They pay to install the unit if a new unit fits exactly like the old unit and nothing would have to be changed. If all the piping is the same or hooks up without any changes, they pay 100%. But that isn't the case. It never is. I've had several systems replaced. If you have a system that is 15 years old and breaks, and what you have isn't available, they order a new system and it would never fit in where the old system is. They would hit me up for $3,000. That's ridiculous.
I had one system go out and AHS' contractor wanted several thousand dollars. Out of frustration, I called another contractor. I called someone other than AHS and I said, "I have a system that I'm told needs to be replaced and AHS wants to replace them with this manufacturer's unit. And I have to pay $3,000." He said, "I can put that system in for less than $2,000. And that includes the unit. I can buy the unit and install it for less than $2000." So, I let him do it. I called AHS and said, "Forget it." So, the HVAC is where it's worth having on the service. But in the end, it's not worth having if I could afford to do it myself. How often does an HVAC system break? Should last at least 15 years if it's decent.
The other thing AHS could do is lower their prices a bit. I've been with them for a long time and they just increased the price on the property we have in Petersburg on High Street from $90-some dollars. Annual renewal came up and now it's $120-some. Significant. But that's the house we replaced the HVAC unit last year. So, they adjust the rates based on their experience, like car insurance. So at 120 a month times 12, that's at least 1,400 year. I could pay for anything but an HVAC unit for $1,500 a year. I could buy any washing machine that I would want, any dryer, any hot water heater, anything, and for less than $1,500. I have these contracts for central heat and air. It's almost the only reason I have AHS. I've replaced several central heat and air units in the last few years at different properties. And every time I replace them, it cost me over $3,000. I've had it with that.

I like how responsive American Home Shield is, and how easy and simple it is to file a claim online. I filed a claim yesterday on my dishwasher. They tried to fix it in April but ever since they did that, it wasn't running that well. They didn't really test it. They just vacuumed the drain, and then they left. It was running off and on, but we just dealt with it. Then now, it hasn't been cleaning. They were here today and they ordered some parts for it. So, we scheduled another appointment for that.

I've called AHS three times in the past 10 years. They would send somebody out to look at the issue and the techs who come out would do the minimum. Recently, I wanted them to look at a leak in my basement and the tech told me I needed to caulk everything. I ended up having to call another plumber out to fix the problem and it turned out that that was not the problem. I also had to pay out of pocket for the second call. Aside from that, the tech that AHS sent out said that they would do the bare minimum, so I didn't want to call them back again.

American Home Shield is really good. They were my second choice because they were recommended, and they're always on time and stand by their word. When my hot water tank was busted, the contractor came out and it was no problem. They contacted me before they came and when they were on their way, just ensuring that I would be home. They were really nice, because at the time when they came in, I had just had surgery, so they were trying to make me comfortable with their decisions and what they were doing, and trying to make sure everything was right.

When we have something go wrong, American Home Shield does what they say they're gonna do. When our old washing machine broke, they replaced it because they couldn't find a part to fix it. They did the same thing with our refrigerator. They couldn't get the part for my old refrigerator. It wasn't that old but the manufacturer stopped making that model. The model closest to it was more than they allotted for a refrigerator. They gave us the option of a lesser refrigerator that they picked out or the cash so we could buy our own. It takes a while to get a check though. It was within two weeks.
When we had trouble with our HVAC, they weren't very good people that American Home Shield sent. In fact, one of them drained our freon, and one of them put a part in backwards, so it broke the whole unit. We haven't fixed it because we didn't wanna argue with American Home Shield anymore about it. I don't know what it was that made them decline because we had been doing the upkeep on it, and the people they sent to fix it said that it was arguing that we did something. It was one of those he-said-she-said deals. We couldn't argue otherwise because we had no proof. They had sent three different contractors to try to fix it but no one could fix it. They found one person that said, “This part’s in backwards, so it bungled up everything.” But that was the only issue we ever had with American Home Shield and I have recommended them.

I had a claim to Home Shield on the switch on the breaker. That was the smoothest claim. In the past, I called to check if a smell in my bathroom was covered and the guy said, "Yeah." But then when the people came over here, they were like, "Oh, no, that's not covered." They still charged me like 100 bucks twice. I called and complained and Home Shield sent me the money back. They need to get their people together on the phone and not be saying, "Oh, just submit the claim," and like that's it. They need to know exactly what's covered and what's not because we're still being charged. Another thing is it seems like their customer service sounds like it's like from India or something because the guy didn't even speak English very well. So, they need to give them more training.

I sent in a claim for a faulty icemaker and All Around Works came out. A couple of years ago, another contractor that American Home Shield works with came out and replaced the icemaker. So it worked for a little longer and then stopped functioning. When the All Around Works guy checked it out, he concluded that it was not an icemaker problem. It was a refrigerator problem. The refrigerator had some sort of flaw, and he characterized it as a design flaw. Then Home Shield sent me a check and said, "Oh, yeah. Well, we can't replace the refrigerator because it was a design flaw. We can't do that." I told them, "Well, I don't know to what extent the repair company could make that type of claim. They're not engineers. They can't make that kind of claim. There hasn't been a recall to my knowledge on that refrigeration unit." So I was left with, "Here's a check, take it or leave it."
I've talked to other people who have had American Home Shield and a couple of them had similar type of experiences. They weren't totally dissatisfied. They've had other warranty work that was totally satisfactory. So if American Home Shield can fix it, that's good. That system works very, very good. They send a repair guy out, you pay your $100 deductible and then they fix it. But if they have to replace the item, I've never been through that with them. So that's not what I call seamless. Overall, American Home Shield is good to have. It's better than nothing.

American Home Shield has been good on very small, easy to fix issues. But on larger, more complex ones, it could be a hassle taking months but still not always getting resolution. For example, last summer, our refrigerator went out. They had a hard time finding anybody who would service the specific brand of the refrigerator. After almost two months with no refrigerator, we went out and bought a new one on our own because we weren't getting any resolution.
This year, our air conditioner went out, and it was hot. The process went so slow that again, we just bought a new air conditioner. We never got any reimbursement from AHS for anything. The small stuff, like if something went wrong with the toilet, would be instantly fixed. But when it's a big, expensive problem, they're not very good. I would caution friends against AHS. If they're doing it for the large, expensive stuff, they would not be happy with it.

We were told that we need to rewire the circuit, but the fridge was here when we moved in and had been using it for 5 years before it started having trouble. Do you know just how hard it is to have 5 kids without a refrigerator for 9 MONTHS? We pay them every month and expect service, WHERE IS YOUR SERVICE AHS???? WE NEED A WORKING REFRIGERATOR. And their service calls are too high. Must be because they are losing people so fast!

IE: the last contractor that came to my home to fix my garage door, told the door isn't balanced, and would cost $600.00 to balance (retail cost $60.00), the door was in balance. The part that needed to be replace would cost $200.00 (Which is a $35.00 retail). If would allow your customers to find a local contractor and submit the findings. Or a list of approved contractors in the city we live to pick from. Looking out for your customers instead of our contractors would make all the difference in the world.

The washing machine had multiple issues and the contractor ended up ordering parts two different times. But the guys were wonderful. They said it was kind of hit and miss and they were following a trail and they were gonna make it work. The last young man who came practically climbed in the washer, put it against the wall, tipped it up, got underneath it, and replaced the pump and some other part. Since he did all that, it has worked absolutely perfectly.
It took a month to actually get it repaired, but we could use it in between. One time, one tech pulled the washer away from the wall and it pulled the drain that goes down the pipe. Unbeknownst, my husband did jeans and all the water that was getting spun out of it was on the floor. The drain came out enough to let all that water go just everywhere and once we got that put back, things were normal.

I've checked with other companies and their coverage isn't as much. The only problem I have would be getting them out on the same day. The contractors never can come out on the same day and it's always a few days later. Also, it's always the automated system when I file a claim. It would be good if we could have customer service to speak to directly. I've interacted with a rep a couple of times but I had to be on hold. They were very informative, though.

AHS put a new compressor in my AC about a year or two ago and I had to pay for a certain amount of pounds of Freon. Then, I recently called them to get an AC problem done and they told me that they weren't gonna fix it because I recently just had it fixed. They had me confused about that and the rep was gonna override it like that. The technician came out and said I was gonna probably need a compressor. I told him they had just put the current one and he said they didn't put in brand-new parts. He put in another capacitor, which he had on his truck. It took him 15 minutes and he was on his way. The AC has been good after the repair.
The only thing with AHS is the waiting process. If I call them early morning, it would be nice to have somebody come out early evening. But we gotta wait a couple of days sometimes. When I first moved in my house, my pilot light went out and I didn't know how to light it. For somebody to come out here for five minutes and light the pilot light back up, we had to wait almost a week in December. I wish they had some more contractors on call to be able to service customers the next day. Other than that, customer service is pretty good.

My refrigerator still hasn't been fixed and this has been since May. It comes down to the people American Home Shield hired. American Home Shield says they're waiting for the final report from the people (who said they couldn't fix it) so that they can determine the next step. The people haven't submitted the report. American Home Shield keeps calling them, but they're getting no response. I've called American Home Shield 30 times about this but nothing has been done.
Additionally, my dishwasher claim is still going on. The people that came out to fix my dishwasher damaged my floor. I told the American Home Shield and said, "That's not our problem, that's their problem." That was shocking to me that they hired this company. They had the same people come out three times, and the dishwasher hasn't been fixed. The people that came out to do my dishwasher a few weeks ago wrote in the report that due to new flooring installed, the dishwasher was damaged.
My flooring just got done two weeks ago and I've had this claim since May. They didn't do flooring under my dishwasher or pull out my dishwasher. For the appliance people to write that my new flooring was the reason why my dishwasher is damaged doesn't make sense. American Home Shield said, "Sorry, that's what they wrote in their report. You can get a second opinion if you want. But we're not gonna do anything about your claim because it's not their fault that the flooring damaged my dishwasher." I'd have to take it to small claims on my own.
Sears has been great but Superior Appliance Repairs has been awful. The repairman told me that my dishwasher wasn't leaking. I said, "This is your third time out. It's leaking." He said, "No, it's not. It's fine." He got out to his car and I watched it leak when he left. I went out to his car and told him I was watching it leak. He got out of his car, rolled his eyes at me and came back in. He was extremely rude. He saw the leak and said, "You're right. The dishwasher has always leaked. I think it's a manufacturer thing. You're gonna get a brand new dishwasher from American Home Shield. I just need to write up this report." But I read the report where he said due to the new flooring installation, the tub is cracked. I texted him and he said, "I said nothing about your flooring." I said, "Yes, you did. Otherwise, American Home Shield wouldn't know I had new flooring until two weeks ago."

The repairman with Sears was very pleasant, straight to the point and knowledgeable. He looked inside the freezer and there was ice build-up on the inside of it. He said right then and there, he knew that the refrigerator and freezer was low on freon. He pulled it out, did an inspection with the air compressor and checked a few other parts. When he was done, he gave me an estimate.
The estimate to just replace the parts was going to be as much as replacing the refrigerator. He said the refrigerator was 21 years old. I told him wouldn't it be better to go ahead and replace the refrigerator then. He said that American Home Shield usually gives them that option. I asked if there was any way we could call and ask them. He said, “Let me try it and see what we can do,” and that he would get back with me, which he did. I also called American Home Shield and told them what he thought and what we had talked about. They ultimately said that it would be better to go ahead and replace the refrigerator. The contractor cleaned up their mess and was in and out of here in less than 45 minutes, and that's taking the old appliance out, bringing the new one in, hooking it up, and making sure it worked.
I have been with American Home Shield for quite a long time. They've fixed my freezer and my washer and dryer. Their contractors call you before they come, which is their guarantee. But the washer is another story. I had to wait almost a month before I was able to get that fixed. When you call them, some reps are very rude. If you don't call at the right time, they brush you off. I eventually got that straightened out and for the most part, I'm happy with American Home Shield.
I refer friends and family to American Home Shield. Another home warranty called and and told me they could offer me a lower rate. I told them I am happy with American Home Shield. They asked why would I wanna pay more if I could pay less. I told them it's because of the relationship that we’ve built and the number of years that we've been together. My family's been around when they've been here, and they know how they operate and how their plans work. I told them for the money that you pay, it's worth it.

We had to have a heating and cooling unit replaced, and it was a little more expensive than we expected it to be. It was $7,000. The chances of something like this happening is slim. Generally, you would get years’ worth of premiums before you have to pay out on something like this. It wasn't all covered, which was what we expected. We ended up paying 50% of the replacement cost and we didn't have a choice because it's 100 degrees here in the summer. He looked young and had told me, "I can't get your washer going, but I went ahead and hooked up everything just in case you want to check it out for yourself to see if you can get it going."
I went in there to turn the washer on and found out he didn't hook up the drain hose. One can't imagine how much water was in my washroom and it ran out to my hallway. My husband, my son and I wound up cleaning it up on our own because we were not going to go spend all this money to get water off the floor. That was the worst incident I had with American Home Shield. But they replaced it with a brand new washer which was way better and a little bigger that my old one so I was very pleased with it. American Home Shield is a great way to go if something ever breaks down. I was happy when my stuff got covered like my refrigerator and my washer, and I didn't have to pay out of pocket. Recently, I made a call for a furnace that was leaking. The rep helped me well but it took three days before I got a contractor in. Then the contractor started diagnosing with other things in there and nothing was getting done. The whole time they knew it was the furnace. The guys were nice, but I felt they didn't know what they were doing. That same contractor came to my mother-in-law's house and gave them a huge diagnosis of wanting to replace the whole thing but it was only a condenser outside. They wanted to charge her $10,000.
They gave me a charge of $700 and I felt they overcharged me as well. I thought I wasn't supposed to pay anything but they charged me for the freon. I heard them say, "It's full. She doesn't need freon." They just transferred whatever was in there to an empty can and put that same freon back in. I needed that done because my house was being sold. Nothing was getting done and I felt I was going after it. American Home Shield couldn't change my contractor. They need better contractors.

I had been having problems with my refrigerator and there was water from the freezer that was leaking into my crisper. I had a lot going on that time and I thought it seemed minor. So, I though I would just wipe up the water and go on, then I'd call AHS at a later date. But the problem got to be a bigger problem than I had anticipated. So I called American Home Shield. I've had them for five years but and it was the first claim I've ever made. You hear horror stories about other people using similar companies and having to wait a long time before you get service. But when I made the claim, the next day, the man from the company who did the repair called and we scheduled an appointment for later that week. When he came out, he was quick and very personable. I got my refrigerator fixed and I was really impressed with the service between American Home Shield and the person who did the repair.
Their price seems reasonable, too. They have a lot insured in my house. I have a lot of old appliances and I have an old air conditioner. And I pay 80 something per month for all of my appliances, plus I have to pay $100 for the deductible. Having AHS saves me money because I've had other service people come out for other things and their service fees alone is $75.
Dear Susan, We are so happy that you enjoyed your experience with us! We appreciate the great review and look forward to working with you again soon.

AHS is expensive at this point with the service fee. I've also had some bad experiences with the contractor coming in and saying there was nothing wrong with this and so on. I recently had a claim for a ceiling fan and I had to buy another ceiling fan. The techs put it on, then I had them come back and adjust it. But it's still noisy. Aside from that, at my ex-husband's house, he reported several appliances that weren't working right. But the tech said that they were all working right and that was completely unacceptable. Now, a good year and a half since now, everything there is still the same. AHS is a good back up if you need it. But they're not my first choice anymore. When I submit a claim with them, I always call in and generally, my experience with them have been decent. Some have been good, some have been not so good. I also had better experiences up in Massachusetts than I've had here in Florida.

I've had AHS for a very long time but I have only made a few claims. Thankfully, each time I had a claim, the process was all right. I recently had a claim for a refrigerator in one of my rental properties. Something was wrong with the freezer where the temperature wasn't staying controlled. I keep the warranty to help the renter and she contacted me. I submitted the claim, then put her information in to be contacted. And that process was really smooth.
But one time, when I tried to cancel the contract, I didn't realize that they were annual contracts and I was one week out. And it was because I had sold the house. So, I was pretty frustrated by that. I didn't own the house anymore and I didn't want to have a warranty on it. And AHS was pretty difficult, so I ended up having to negotiate with them to apply the one year to the rental house. But I didn't like being locked in for a whole year and I didn't recall getting much communication from them about it. I felt frustrated that they weren't willing to work with me more when I had sold the house.

I put in a request online, then the next day, if it's a work day, American Home Shield sends me who the service provider is and I give them a call. This time, the request was for my garage door. Cactus Garage Doors was helpful, and their customer service was good. They sent a guy out the next available time, and it was fast. It took about two weeks 'cause they had to order the part, but that was to be expected. Besides that, the service guy didn't try to up charge me and he knew what he was doing. He put up the new system and let me know how it worked. It was excellent. It all depends on what I'm filing a claim for though.
I've had some bad experiences with American Home Shield because of the people that they hire. I have high-end appliances in my kitchen, and on those things, when they send a service rep out, they're usually not that great. A lot of times, they're looking at Youtube like I do. They're at a loss too. I have to keep calling American Home Shield to send someone else who knows what they're doing. On the other hand, when I file a claim for my pool, my air conditioning, my garage, or anything else, it's good.

Through the years I've had them, there had been one contractor I didn't like and I let them know. All contractors but that one were good. But what I've noticed is a lot of new businesses will pick them up and when they get established, a lot of times, they don't wanna take them anymore.

I encountered a problem with my heating and cooling system and the amount ended up tremendously high. The difficulty was it being a three-party transaction and it ended up in a lending institute. The association with three different people was not a comfortable feeling. They connected me with an experienced personnel that could replace my system. Their procedure was weird, but I'm pleased with the work. However, I am not too pleased with the amount of money that's taken out monthly by American Home Shield.

I've been in my house for 18 years, and I've been with American Home Shield ever since. I haven't dealt with anybody else. If I can afford it, then I say, "Hey, that's it." I'm the type of person that if it's in the ballpark, I don't search for the cheapest price. Because sometimes, the cheapest price isn't the best thing. I'm sticking with American Home Shield because my overall experience has been good.
My last incident was with my water heater. It was my third one in 15 years. It went out, and I had to get it replaced. The repair people made two visits on it, then American Home Shield gave me a market price for the water heater. I had to go to Lowe's, get one and get it put in. American Home Shield gave me so much money, but it was less than half of what it cost for Lowe's to come out and replace the water heater for me, but the other two water heaters, they did it themselves. Other than that, when I call American Home Shield, the repair people come and get it fixed. All I normally pay is the upfront fee, and they take care of it.

Every time American Home Shield sends somebody out here, they’re able to fix the problem that I have. It was only this time they didn't. The repairman didn't fix my refrigerator. He checked the top and the bottom of it and said he was gonna order some parts. He told me the part with a rubber piece that I needed would take two weeks. But they sent him back out here without the part that was why he couldn't complete it. He would have finished the job if he had the parts. American Home Shield sent somebody else out and he's supposed to be out this week to fix it. Also, every time somebody comes out here, the bill goes up. We started off paying 50 something then it went to 60 something. Now it's 75.

My AC was not cooling. I took my kids to a friend's house to swim, and we came home, and it was 82 in the house. I immediately put in a service order to American Home Shield because it stopped cooling completely. I got a text that CamAire Services was going to be coming out. They said that if they had not contacted me within 24 hours, I could contact them. The tech was amazing. He told me that the last service provider that I had out here ripped us off through American Home Shield. I was like, “Yeah, the last guy that came out, he gave us 10 pounds of Freon, and that's not covered by my contract, and I had to pay out-of-pocket.” He looked at me and said, “Well, your sticker says that your unit only holds eight. So they pocketed that money.” I didn't know that.
I feel like American Home Shield is so expensive for how little I get service done, but also I need it because what if something breaks, and then I don't have anything. The service is good if you live in a major city. I live in the middle of nowhere, so it's kind of hit or miss with service. You don't really get a choice with the people that they pick. You just get assigned to whoever you get assigned to, whereas they used to contract with any factory service in Sears, and so I knew what to expect. But since Sears went out of business, now it's just like a mom and pop. It's kind of a roll of the dice and not everybody's honest.

One of my rental houses had a water leak in the kitchen sink and when Home Service Plumbers came out, the plumbers said that they couldn't do anything to help because the residence was a duplex. Even though I own both sides and it was just fixing one side, he stopped right then and there and he said he couldn't do anything and it was out of his hands. Ultimately, that cost me a lot of money because that was a big water leak and there was a lot of water damage. I had to call an additional plumber to come out and help fix this leak. It turned out to be more expensive than it was because the leak went on and I had to get that thing fixed immediately. I've used American Home Shield for years and we've had multiple people come out and service us for several different reasons. For the most part, I was taken care of but for some reason, this guy turned his head and said, "I can't help you because this is a dual residence." He left us there with our hands tied and it left me in a huge financial burden. I dropped AHS.

His & Her Plumbing came out and installed a tank. As he removed the older water tank, he didn't put anything on it and he put it on my rug and put a rust ring, so now I have to always use a rug cleaner to clean it. He continued to put the water tank in and the water pan was broken. I said that water pan is 20 years old and if it leaks, it's gonna leak again and he said he had to take it all off. I said that would be improperly installing it if he had to break it and he went back and put it back in. I'm looking at it, the fittings and the piping, and it looks fine but let's say the fitting was wrong and we have a problem, the one thing that prevents all that water from escaping is the water pan. You don't compromise that. And when he first came out, he looked at it and he said it was gonna be $1,000. But I did a couple of quotes and the price was almost $200 less. I've done other quotes that were much higher, so he was still within the lower end, but there was still enough variance from what I paid versus what he quoted. That made me uncomfortable.
Also, several years back, we had an air conditioning unit go down and we did not get anyone to come out and look at it. I called on it numerous times and it was during the summer. I didn't end up getting it serviced and I paid to get it looked at. I never got an answer and I just got a refund. And my outlet went out in the garage and I couldn't figure out why. The individual came out and it was a circuit breaker. The tech said he couldn't fix that but he was an electrician. That was the end of that. I was almost done with American Home Shield at that point.

We have two different air conditioning units in our home and they do not run separately from one another. I had a leak in my unit upstairs where it was leaking water and I was able to contain it. But I needed it taken care of. I don't want water getting all over the floor and ruining the floor and then going through the ceiling and going downstairs. The contractor came out to diagnose the units, stopped the leak and made sure that the water was flowing properly through the pipes so that we were getting cold air through the vents upstairs and getting proper air conditioning.
I usually go online to submit claims through the American Home Shield portal and it’s very easy to navigate. I've used it many times when I have an issue or to follow up on an issue. It's straightforward. They allow you to choose a category or subcategories, and note what the issue is. If the contractors are coming out to work on something that had previously been worked on and maybe it's not working again, AHS typically already knows a good technician in the area they could send you because they have some history with it. So, it's fairly simple.
AHS does a good job of protecting the appliances and systems in your home, depending on the program you choose. And it's a nice peace of mind of knowing that if you have an issue, while there will be some money out of your pocket, it's gonna be nowhere near what it could be if you didn't have that kind of coverage. The cost is the cost. But they've also also saved us so much on repairs.

My water heater burst and I have the home warranty plan with American Home Shield. So, I notified them. They gave me somebody but it was a six-day wait. So, I called back to get them to change. When the other company came out, they did an initial diagnosis and then I had to wait for a manager to do a second diagnosis, which took two to three days. After they did the second diagnosis, I had to make a decision to wait for American Home Shield to make the determination on how much they were gonna pay for it. When I called them, they were waiting on the company to send them their diagnosis. So, the manager left his card. I called him and I found out that he was sick so, it took another day and a half before he was able to get the quote to AHS on what was wrong and what needed to be replaced.
I went nine days without a hot water heater because I was waiting for American Home Shield to make a determination on what they were going to pay. And in the interim, I asked them if I could place my water heater and wait for them to make a determination and they told me no because I needed to know how much they were going to pay. I told them it didn't matter. So, I did what's called the payment in lieu that they would just send me the money so I can go ahead and not wait on them and get my hot water heater replaced. They said they would email me how much they would pay. But I never got the email. I waited two days but I started the process to get my own. I called and they told me I couldn't speak to anybody until they made a decision. I couldn't even talk to anybody in that department. So, I said, "Okay."
I did my water heater and after three days, I called. They said I had to go into their portal and accept what it was that they were gonna give me. But that's not what they said. They told me I needed to wait for an email and she said that's not how they do it anymore. I don't work for American Home Shield and their employees answering the telephone don't have that information. So, she said she would transfer me. And the lady said I gotta go in the portal. After all was said and done, the water heater probably cost me about $1100. And they gave me 300. So, I'm not gonna use American Home Shield anymore.
I got the service because I realized that a lot of times you don't have emergency money sitting around waiting for something to break down. And I know stuff is gonna break down. I've had AHS for over 10 years so I know. This is probably my third time using them and I am very dissatisfied with the way they handle the phones and how they get the vendor. I’m also very dissatisfied when you call back and gotta go through all of these prompts before you even speak to anybody.
I'd like to thank you for bringing this to our attention. I apologize for the difficulties you've experiencing and would like to discuss this more. Feel free to email me at consumeraffairs@ahs.com.

It took over six months for American Home Shield to resolve an issue. It took another almost two months for them to resolve another issue. And then my warranty is tied to the agreement, so I couldn't even get my warranty on the air conditioner repair. American Home Shield is awful. I told them I was gonna cancel once I got everything resolved. Now, For the last couple of months that I didn't pay, they're saying I owe them and I had to pay those months. I would not recommend them. Everybody I talked to wouldn't recommend them. Even their contractors said that they were bad.
We had AHS initially when I purchased my home, and then I started it back at the end of last year. In December, I filed a claim for a dishwasher, and it took until May to get it resolved. On our air conditioner, they were sending people out to fix the unit. When they got here, they didn't even know what they were coming for. We have three different units in this home. I live in the south. They replaced an AC coil inside the house. It went out again about two months later. When I called, I was told I had to deal with American Home Shield because my warranty is with them. When I called American Home Shield, they said, “I cannot help you because your policy has been canceled.” I said, “Yes. But this happened before that.” They said, “It doesn't matter. You would have to catch up in order to do that.”
I went and paid another company to replace an entire air conditioning unit for the amount I had to pay a company to replace just a coil plus what I pay American Home Shield. I got an entire unit for almost the same amount that American Home Shield said I had to pay the contractor. The reason it didn't work was because they replaced the coil but the coil takes a different type of Freon that was an older unit, and they didn't tell me that. So, it was completely out of Freon in less than two months. I have nothing good to say about American Home Shield. Their contractors come out and they say, “American Home Shield is awful.” Even my boss said, “The first thing you did wrong was American Home Shield.”

The water was not coming out of the showerhead. I called American Home Shield and made a service request. I know you can do it online. However, if you do it online, the computer will randomly pick any one of the five plumbing vendors in my area. The reason why I call in is because I specifically want Sigmond Plumbing to come and do it. Before I signed up with American Home Shield, I asked them for the list of all their AC, plumbing and electricity vendors then I called each of them. As a homeowner, I want to know who picks up their phone and if they don't pick up their phone, I don't use them. That's very frustrating to me. So, of the five plumbing vendors in my area, Sigmond Plumbing was the only one to pick up their phone and that's why I always request them. The inexperienced agents would say that they could not assign Sigmond Plumbing. I just hang up, call back, get a different agent, and they do it for me.
Years ago, the AC broke and the company said that they needed to get approval from American Home Shield, which took days. Then, they had to order the part and that took days as well. So my tenant was without AC in the middle of summer in Florida for four weeks and that was very frustrating because my tenant was mad at me. But I could understand her frustration. Her house thermostat got up to 102 degrees without AC and she had three kids. So, American Home Shield should improve their response time. What bothers me the most is that time that you have to wait and not knowing anything.
For my recent shower claim, when Sigmond Plumbing's guy came out,he told me what needed to be done and it was a complex thing to do it the right way. Then they needed to get approval from American Home Shield and they gave approval within 48 hours. So my tenants didn't have a shower for 48 hours. Then Sigmond Plumbing came back out, and that was again after the weekend, to add another two days. The technician said that all he got to do was change a washer. He said he didn't need to do all the stuff that the other technicians said they needed to do. So, that's a complaint on American Home Shield for sending out a technician that didn't know what the heck he was doing the first time.
I have another complaint that I had with American Home Shield a few months ago. It was for the same apartment where the AC went out. I called it in, the technician came, and he was saying that it was electrical. The AC guy got it working but he said the breaker needed to be replaced because there were not enough amps. Then, the electrical company came out and they said everything was fine because the breaker wasn't tripped. But my tenant told me that it would trip once every two days. But the electrical contractor said that they couldn't replicate the problem so they couldn't do anything about it. So I paid the $125 deductible for the AC guy just to flip a switch and the issue is still not resolved.

The refrigerator door was broken. There was a piece missing off the door to create the seal. I went online to notify American Home Shield. I didn't have any issues navigating the website and submitting my claim. I got the email letting me know what company was gonna be coming out to do the service repair. The service tech that came up was fine. He was in and out. It didn't take long to assess the damage. Everything was quick and professional. He said that he would have to submit the claim, and then they might need another part to repair because the refrigerator is old and they might have issues repairing the refrigerator and that was it.
With my AHS plan, I like not having to worry about repairs. I just submit my request, pay the service fee, have someone come out and address my complaint, and tell me what needs to be done. There was one time that someone came and fixed the issue, didn't have to go any further to get somebody to order a part and wait for that to come in. So it's good knowing that if an equipment or appliance needs to be replaced, I can get something of equal or lesser value for free.

The air conditioner wasn’t cooling and the request for any service is easy enough but after that, you’re kinda on your own. American Home Shield tells you the name of who's coming but there is no background. So, I took it upon myself after everything happened to find out what kind of reviews the contractor had and they were terrible.
The tech struck an instrument into the flywheel of the air conditioner, which was never broken, and they broke it. He told my husband that he was gonna go back and have to put in a request to replace it. But we were told that it was already broken and that we had to pay roughly 600 something dollars to get it fixed and AHS wouldn't cover it. But they never addressed the initial issue as to why it wasn't cooling, which turns out I had to pay my own money to have the flywheel looked at and fixed. It turned out it was the motherboard that needed to be replaced and it had nothing to do with the flywheel. The tech didn't know what he was doing.
I tried to call AHS corporate and it doesn’t exist. I had to call countless times to talk with someone to get it elevated. So they didn't do anything. The last time I talked to someone could have been a week or so ago, but I told them that I've already fixed it and I want the refund for the service call as well as me getting it fixed. They said they were gonna refund everything but it hadn't populated into my account yet. I’m very dissatisfied and I would highly recommend people not to deal with AHS.

They sent me the information with the company, too. The tech was very friendly. He tested the garbage disposal then he ended up replacing the garbage disposal. Everything's great now.
I like having the security of having the protection and knowing that you can get service when you need it or you can get stuff fixed in your house when you need it without having to pay an astronomical amount. But the downside behind it is, there are certain things that aren't covered with the service. So sometimes there could be some hidden cost. This happened a while ago with my air conditioning unit that went out. The techs came to service it but they said Freon wasn't included and it was 1,000 bucks for Freon.
