So far, AHS has been great. There was a leak in our guest room ceiling and I submitted the claim over the phone, and they were able to help me. Other than the wait time being a little long, the experience was fine. But still, it was better than the previous time. During our last incident, I was on the phone waiting for a rep for over an hour. This time the hold time was just 15 minutes. AHS dispatched someone to see if there was a problem with the heater or air conditioner on that floor closing it. The contractor said that there appeared to be a slight clog in one of the heater pipes. He cleaned it out and said, “See what happens from this point if you still have a leak or not.” Another time we had a problem with a bad plumber and as soon as I called AHS back, they referred our claim to a different plumber and rectified the problem. Moreover, they made the appointment in 24 hours.

The pool pump stopped working and I did a claim for it online. American Home Shield sent a contractor who came and had to order a part then come back the next day. We’ve used the pool pump and it’s been operating perfectly. American Home Shield has always been very good for the few times that we’ve used them. The only negative thing is it's really hard to find somebody to talk to. If something doesn’t get fixed properly, it’s really hard to get a hold of American Home Shield. I have to wait on hold for a very long time. Still, I would recommend them.

I was at the house and I started feeling very sick, nauseous and having a horrible headache. For some reason, I wondered if there was a gas leak so I called the gas company and I called the HVAC people who had just installed three new propane-powered heat pump for us. Everyone came out and checked stuff out. I left the house and went to our main house then they called me and said that I have carbon monoxide leak and we had to have someone look at it. We have an American Home Shield policy so I called them and it was awesome. They sent someone out the next day. The contractor said that they can't repair and they have to replace the whole furnace. That time, it was really cold, and so I asked how long it will take but it was a very short time.

I live in the town where American Home Shield is located and I see them when I go see the dentist. American Home Shield is amazing and I have been telling everyone they have done amazing on the house. Also, the contractors were wonderful, very efficient and neat. They were also very timely. So, I couldn't be happier.

We were having a problem with backup in the bathroom and I called American Home Shield either Friday night or Saturday morning. The claim was taken care of very quickly, but they didn’t tell the contractor Wolfe Plumbing that it was an emergency and that I was handicapped so couldn’t go upstairs to use the upstairs bathroom. It was a miscommunication between American Home Shield and Wolfe Plumbing. They got here on Monday and the guy from Wolfe apologized immensely. He said he was so sorry and that he didn’t know it was an emergency.

The plumbers thought they had cleared the problem and then they came back. It ended up being the septic tank. Wolfe Plumbing was great but the guy from the septic tank company that they sent out said he can’t find the septic tank. The guy started then said he was so exhausted, so my son told him to get out of the way and he did it. It was my son who found the septic tank. The guy pumped it, but he left without filling the hole and so my son had to fill the holes. Yet that wasn’t American Home Shield’s fault.

Everything has been fine and working great since the repair. We just bought the house almost two years ago and we had talked about having somebody to come out to check the septic right after we moved in the house because we didn’t know how long it had been here. And then all these happened and I’m glad we have American Home Shield now. American Home Shield is a good company to have. Unfortunately, I just canceled my contract with them yesterday because my son’s gonna be in the residence and I’m moving out.

On Easter weekend, my AC wouldn’t work -- the outside unit stopped. I went online and filed a claim with American Home Shield on the same day and it was a very easy experience. The contractors that came out did good but it turned out that I had to replace the whole unit. I did not have AHS do it because the price was almost twice the price of another quote that I got. But everything went well. I got the part that American Home Shield paid towards the new unit quickly.

A burner on my stove is not working and the water dispenser in my fridge stopped working, and I had an issue with the microwave not being safe. So, I submitted the work request to American Home Shield on the eighth and the contractor came out on the 11th and did a diagnostic. And then they said they would be submitting the information to AHS so that they could get the process started of replacing my microwave because it is unsafe and getting the parts to fix the other two items. But nothing has occurred since that time.

I called the contractor around the 20th of April because I hadn’t heard anything. I asked them what’s going on and they said, “Well, we submitted it to AHS but they haven’t gotten back to us. We’ll submit it again.” I waited and about two days ago I called again. I called American Home Shield this time because no one has contacted me. They had me on hold for about 15 minutes and then they got on and had this whole story about the fact that the contractor had not submitted the information until x date.

AHS had parts coming in on another date and this is how they set it up. The contractor can decide when they come out. I had two items and two sets of parts that came in on different days. So even though the contractors could’ve come out and fixed one of my appliances weeks ago, because the other item just arrived last weekend, the contractor has the ability to just wait and consolidate and come out when they want. I still haven’t had anybody call me and I just had a conversation with AHS on Monday.

No one has called even if it’s just to update people to say “We actually have the parts but the contractor has made the determination to not come out until May whatever." And as far as the microwave is concerned, AHS said the contractor is not responsible for that. I have to call AHS's parts department and I was on hold for half an hour and no answer. It was like a continuous loop. And I haven’t had an opportunity to call them back again. What’s the point of getting the warranty if it takes two months to fix the microwave or the stove, or the water dispenser. They have the parts at least for the two items and now I’m just waiting. I don’t know if it’s the contractor's or AHS’s fault, or both. But in the midst of everything, I'm paying on a monthly basis to have this coverage but I'm not getting the benefit of it.

I’ve only been covered about two months and this is the first time I submitted a claim. With AHS, it doesn’t really matter. It’s not like you have to be covered for a year before you get any type of service and I was quite pleased with that. But there has been nothing since then and I’m not pleased. So far, we’ve been working with two burners out of four burners we got on the stove. It’s getting to the point now wherein if it’s not fixed by mid-May, that would prompt me to do a Consumer Affairs type report. But right now, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

I've had AHS for over 10 years and I recently had a plumbing claim on a rental property. It was with the single lever faucet in the shower bath combo which wasn't secured properly. And then the diverter where you pull the little lever off where the shower comes out or the bath, they're both running. However, there's an issue where only part of it was repaired and then the other was denied which I don't agree with. I was on hold for 18 minutes when I spoke with an agent and they never came back and I finally just hang up. We're selling the property so I don't have any more fight in me and I just let it go. This past experience wasn't great. But over the span of years, the warranty has been fine.

My AC unit was not blowing out cold air, so I submitted a claim to American Home Shield online. I couldn't really call in because it was hard. I’d been on hold for over an hour and most of the time that I call in, I was gonna wait hours unless I call first thing in the morning when they first open up. Then I might get about a 20-30 minute wait, or I could try late, and I’d be there right before they close and hope someone answers. But I learned after the first couple of times that I couldn’t call. They said they were too busy. But after I submitted that claim online, they sent me an email confirming with the name of the air conditioning company and their phone number. Then I called and scheduled an appointment.

The technician was fine and very professional. He was here 30 minutes max and he told me what was going on, what he needed to do, and if he fixed it. He replaced a relay, so now the AC is working fine. The job was done all in one appointment and it was a good experience for me. American Home Shield so far, for the most part, has been good. I have two homes covered with it and I’ve used them on both.

When our furnace was making noise, I went online and filed a claim with American Home Shield and the process was okay. There was a scheduled time for the contractor to come, which was a period of time in the afternoon and he did not come. And he was supposed to have been here by 4 o'clock, and at 4 o'clock, he called and said he was running late, and he would be here by 8 o'clock pm. So, I was disappointed that he waited so late to tell me that he was gonna be late. He should have told me sooner. And I waited and waited but he did show up several hours later and worked on the furnace. My husband said our furnace is making a new noise now, but we haven't submitted another claim.

Also, I had an ice maker that had problems and I had to call back that guy at least three times. I had to make a phone call to American Shield because I couldn't go online and do it. And each time, I had to wait a solid hour on the line, which is my biggest frustration with American Home Shield. With my furnace, I need to get the guy back out here without being charged another $100. I have to call American Home Shield and get them to set up a call back without charge. And I have to stay on hold for an hour, before someone can help me, and that is horrendous. And I've had to do that a few times.

I have waited 3+ weeks to be reimbursed for the $400+ dollars I had to pay out of pocket to my plumbing company. American Home Shield took a week plus to NOT put me in contact to one of their contractors. Every time I called they informed me that it usually takes between 24-48 hrs to be matched with a contractor... after it had already been a week. They finally offered to authorize me to use my own contractor and be reimbursed by them. So I got my plumber over to do the work and they have been unable to settle the reimbursement OR give me ANY kind of communication.

I have called them every few days and I am always told I will be called back in 24-48 hrs. I have yet to receive one phone call or email from them regarding my case. I have spoke with the general line, the authorization center, as well as the online chat with no luck. Today I called and asked to speak with a supervisor... and guess what?! They can call me back in 24-48 hrs!! What a waste of time and money! DO NOT BUY!!

We have been customers with American Home Shield since August of 2017. At first when we made a claim they were very responsive. That changed in 2018. First we had a problem with our dryer. We filed a claim like we always do, online. We were assigned to a company to fix the dryer. After hearing nothing from them, I tried to call them only to learn they had a voicemail that was not set up. The following day I called again. The person answering the phone did to identify themselves and I was unsure if I had reached the company. When I finally got someone on the phone who did know what was going on, they told me they had a procedure scheduled and would not be available for yet another day.

After this I called American Home Shield back and told them I needed a company who would be able to get out to our house. They called another company and assured us that they would be at our house on the next day. We cancelled plans for the next day and waited for them to arrive. An hour after they were supposed to arrive we got a call saying that there had been confusion and that they would not be able to come until after the weekend. I called AHS and their answer was to pay for the service calls... after the weekend. At that point we took care of the problem by calling someone ourselves.

Now our hot water heater is out and once again AHS is unable to get someone out here until after the weekend. I was told that being without hot water wasn't an emergency to the company. Well, I called a local plumber who came out and fixed the problem. Funny that I could find someone but this large company could not. Maybe they need to contract with more available contractors. I was called once by a supervisor, I returned the call but was never contacted again. I have had problems with AHS returning phone calls. If this service continues, I will not be using AHS after our contract runs out.

American Home Shield used to be a good home warranty service. In the last 3-4 years it has become a service that is not worth the price. The last two service calls we had thru AHS, the contractor came out, looked at the covered unit or appliance for 5 minutes, and said they could not fix it. First one was a leaky dishwasher (which was actually REPLACED by AHS about 8 years ago!), which they said was improperly installed. Second was a leaking garbage disposal, which the contractor came out TWICE and did nothing... After the request to AHS clearly spelled out a garbage disposal problem. How hard is it for them to put one in the truck on the first call?

    Updated review: June 9, 2018

They have worked with me and resolved the issue.

    Original Review: May 4, 2018

AHS new policy is to make you pay the $75 before the contractor even comes to the house. Due to phone issues, we never got the message the contractor was on his way, and was not able to get there in time, and they took the $75 without stepping in the house. So, we tried to reschedule, and we are unable to unless we pay ANOTHER $75. Called AHS to see if they could just open a new request and they said no without another $75.

When you place a request, they do not even ask when it would be convenient for you, they just make it and think you will be there. I had to call to cancel and make an appointment when I could get off of work, and they scheduled it at 10-2pm! How is that convenient for anyone that works? But that was the closest time that would fit my schedule. So my dishwasher is still not fixed.

Another time the AHS contractor was to fix a fan, but looked at it and the remote, and stated it is not a warranty issue, it is the wrong remote, and that is why it didn't work, and left, again with the $75. I got another contractor out there from AHS, and they fixed it without a problem. The good contractor said that it was confusing because the fan name, and the remote name was different because it was bought out and that was why the names didn't match.

So, if they are going to have sketchy contractors that do not want to fix warranty clients, they just take the $75 and leave and give any excuse they want. Easy money for 10 min of work! It was nice back even a year ago because I didn't have to pay the $75 until the issue was actually fixed, not just relying on the contractor to just take the money and leave. Last time I paid AHS to get my dishwasher fixed, it was just broken glass that previous owner had left in the bottom of the dishwasher, and he told me to go buy some dishwasher cleanser (he didn't even provide it for me, and do it while he was there). Yes it fixed the problem, but he got $75 dollars for that. Now, AHS wants me to pay $150 for something that might be that quick and easy? Yes, I'm very dissatisfied.

I called American Home Shield and the rep was good. Also, the contractors were excellent. I had a leak in the front yard and they came out. The plumber identified that it wasn’t a water main leak. They said it was an irrigation leak so I had to get the sprinkler guy to come out. That wasn’t covered under American Home Shield, but they usually cover things that I have them out for.

I have used the website of American Home Shield a couple of times and when I put in a claim, I submitted it online. You can get in touch with the contractor by the next day or you get a call right back up. The contractor and I got to talk and he told me how the thing works so that’s pretty well and they were great. They knew exactly where to go and told me what part to change.

When I put the AC on cool, it’s not cooling and it would still be blowing hot air. They changed the valve on the unit outside and that would have worked. The valve wasn't checking over. The first part that they ordered was the wrong one. After they got the second part, that's what fixed it. It didn’t take them long to get the job done. It was 45 minutes at the most from the time he got here until he left. Since then, the AC has been working great. I’ve been with AHS for six years and every time I need them, they've always done good service. I keep using them since there’s no way to go out there and keep checking my appliances.

My refrigerator is not working at all now and I think it's the control panel. Pro Appliance came out three times but never put any parts. They kept saying it needed to be defrosted and it was the fan heating it that's making the loud noise. It would stop but then come back on a little while later. There's something wrong but they never diagnosed or fixed it. I don't really have a problem with Home Shield as they were fine, and when it happened again, they assigned the job to somebody else. I got an email and I texted, but the new company never contacted me, so I just don't have a refrigerator and it's been going on for months already. I've lost food in my refrigerator twice now, and it's not a really good experience.

However, American Home Shield has been real receptive. They've done what they were supposed to do and they only charged me once. I understand intermittent issues are hard to fix, but I would think if I wasn't with a warranty company, they would be a little more attentive and they would be my guest. But it's not Home Shield's problem. Also, they did get a different company this time. So as far as the warranty company, they're super good and I recommend them.

We have a Wolf range that has an oven and a cooktop together. It has a convection and a regular oven and the oven just stopped working on both sides. My husband called American Home Shield to file a claim. The process was very easy and within two days, a contractor was sent out. They called very quickly and made the appointment. They were here on time and did a good job.

We were without an oven for a few days because the contractor had to call Wolf to get the part but we expected it. The oven and the cooktop were apart and they were on the floor of the garage. The contractor called us as soon as the part came in. They came back out, put the oven and cooktop together and the ovens worked just fine. Unfortunately, because it was old, there were some seals that were really dry because it was such high heat. When they put it back together again, we didn’t know that those seals weren’t sealing anymore. So, the gas was coming out from the burners, in places that the flame was coming out, from places that the flame was not supposed to come out of. We called the contractor and they said, “Call American Home Shield and set it up for a new call in case we need to get new pieces. Otherwise, we're coming out to check it out.”

So, the contractor came out and took the top part apart which wasn’t part of the original problem. They ordered the part and the part came right in. AHS paid them and it worked very well. When the contractor was here, he turned the range on and off but we weren’t expecting that there was anything wrong with the top because that hadn’t been part of the problem but it was clear once he took it apart that they had just disintegrated. Nevertheless, it has been a wonderful experience. American Home Shield is really good.

I would refer American Home Shield. The technicians have been very professional. Navigating the website when I submitted the claims was pretty good too. My water heater was leaking and I contacted American Home Shield. I paid the $75 fee, then their preferred plumbers came over. The plumbers were responsive but it bothered me that they charged me extra. They had to adapt the water heater that they put in to the plumbing of the water heater that they took out. So, they charged me for actually doing their job. The plumbers wanted to get a credit card upfront and I said “No.” I told them that they had to perform first. AHS should tighten up on their contractors. They should regulate the financial arrangements that the contractors provide. They’re handing the work to the contractors and have influenced that type of situation. The incidental cost charged by a supplier should not exceed the amount of the deductible paid by the customer.

Also before this, I had a refrigerator that went out that AHS chose to either replace or give me money. When I got the fridge, I sent them the receipt. I’m supposed to wait for two weeks to get the check but it has been a while and I’m still waiting for that check from them. They owe me $1,056. Also, their voicemail is difficult to navigate and everybody has to migrate online but not everybody wants to do that.

I called AHS because my plumbing was backed up. I live in Blythe and they arranged for a plumber from Riverside to come in. Then, when he arrived, he ran around like a chicken without his head on and told me he couldn’t do anything because he had to go through the roof. He had to go back and make a report. So, I waited and the next morning, I called AHS and they said that they had denied the service because the guy said he had to go through the roof. I was also told that I had to hire someone else if they didn’t cover it. So I called a local plumber who came and unclogged my plumbing, and he was gone in less than half an hour.

AHS was good. The two ladies that I spoke to were super nice. They listened to what I had to say and they made the arrangements for the plumber to come out at first. And then when they had to deny the claim, they were also nice. However, the plumber was a disaster. I paid him $75 and he didn’t do the work. I’m sure AHS paid him too.

Instead of going to the manufacturer warranty, using American Home Shield is the best avenue to leverage. I've never had any issues with scheduling online, the vendors, the relationships and the timely response. Everything's been perfect and positive.

This year, I already did 3 claims and the last one was for an ice maker. The parts within the freezer on the ice maker was rusty. Submitting a claim online was very easy and American Home Shield reached out within 12 hours from the on-time of the claim. The contractor kept me up to date when the part was ordered and then basically scheduled the appointment within 48 hours after receiving the part. He was very professional, polite, and courteous. It was a small job so he was only here for about 25 minutes. He completed the warranty work and the ice maker is now functioning as expected.

We had an AC claim less than two days ago and that was completed and done. The contractor came in within a couple of days and got everything handled. I also had a plumbing issue and the experience was great as well. However, when I submit a claim, the options aren't specific enough. So, when I submitted my claim for the washer or dryer, I couldn't specify that the problem was the hot side of the washing machine because there was no way to put that into the actual request.

Given the options, I just put there a pipe leaking and then I needed my faucet fixed. So the technician got there and said that as far as he could see, I was only into the faucet as that was all that was listed in the claim, and so he wouldn't be able to touch the washing machine. So, the contractor had to come back out the second time, but it's the same thing. It was corrected without an issue and I didn't have to pay an extra deductible. They came out two or three times after to get the job done. But since the repair, everything has been working great. I'd probably renew with American Home Shield. It's been worth it for me.

They also told me that it would probably be cheaper to replace the washing machine but it depended on what AHS wanted to do. And to their surprise, AHS wanted to fix it, which resulted in a week delay in getting all the parts in. Then they came out and they had to completely disassemble the washing machine, replace the drum and all the bearings and then put the washing machine back, which was about a 5-hour process. I called the company back. I left a message and then I called them the next day and they told me that I had to call American Home Shield and reopen the contract. And it was pretty redundant. I wish there was a simpler system like if they've already sent someone out to do the job and they didn’t do it immediately, then I shouldn’t have to go through the whole process all over again. But they didn't make me pay again and this time, the AC worked. Apparently, they had to take the whole system out of the house. And as they cleaned it, they found out that it was backed up in some area that they couldn’t get to the first time. I'd recommend American Home Shield to others.

I bought the house at the end of March. We moved in and none of the ceiling fans or the lights upstairs worked. Submitting the claim to American Home Shield went well but getting my issue fixed was different. We've had two different people out and it's still not resolved. The company that first came out really didn't seem to give any two cents about anything. The electrician pretty much did nothing and he wasn't here very long. They said they were gonna cut into the walls and start in my master bedroom. I'm like, "So you're pretty much gonna start in my master bedroom and cut until you find where the issue is? No. This doesn't make sense."

I called AHS and I let them know that I need a second opinion. I was not just gonna have somebody cut into my walls when he was here for only 20 minutes. They sent out a second contractor and this guy was here for a few hours. He took down all my fixtures and the ceiling fan stuff. He was using something on the wall to try to find the electrical stuff between the walls. He found the spot and told me he was gonna cut between two of the bedroom walls and I said, "Okay." But he said it had to go through AHS first to get approved to see if anything was covered. And he said, "I don't believe that they cover for us to re-patch the holes or paint the walls. I think you're gonna have to cover that." I said that was no problem and that I understood. Then, he said that somebody will contact me in the next 48 hours to let me know from American Home Shield but nothing ever happened.

AHS didn't care and I'm not happy so I didn't even call back. I paid out of my pocket for a second opinion, so that shows that I'm willing to pay the money because I paid another $75 on top of what I already paid. And it's not about the money. I just want the problem resolved. But I don't feel that I should have to contact them. It was AHS that's supposed to be contacting me to let me know what now is gonna be the next step. I did my part.

We had heating and air and plumbing issues and filed a claim with American Home Shield. We had a home inspection done by the Buyers’ Inspection Group in Greenville to make sure there weren’t any major problems with the home. We had that report made available to interested parties including the people that have a contract about the house. But they also got their own inspector and their own inspector was the one who supposedly found a slight leak under the sink so they said that they want to have it fixed. Caroline, our real estate agent was the one who has handled all of this for us but I was there to let the guy from Rapp's in the house, cut the alarm off and show him where the supposed leak was.

The contractor looked under the kitchen sink and cut on the water, so that water was flowing into both drains of the two sinks there and he kept the water running. And then he went under the house that’s a fairly tall crawl space and asked me to tap so he’d be sure to get to the right place. But then he didn’t have any trouble getting to the right place anyway because it was obvious where it was. He said he couldn't find any leak. There was no dampness and the ground was dry. So I figured this sort of thing happens sometimes and we were surprised that there was nothing that he could find to fix. We got a report from Rapp's and if some leak shows up again, they can come back out there within 60 days and the situation would be the same.

It was disappointing that whatever the inspector sent by Buyers’ Inspection Group saw couldn’t be repaired because we couldn’t find any problem. But the experience with all the people was wonderful. They were very prompt and very courteous. The part that we were puzzled with doesn’t have anything to do with American Home Shield or with Rapp's. And I know the realtors like to work with American Home Shield so that’s good.

American Home Shield should have disclosed that while I was on the phone despite the fact that it is in my contract. I made an appointment, I told their rep what I needed, but she didn't disclose that. As a result, I had someone come to my house and I spent $150 for absolutely no service at all. So I asked AHS to close my account. I would not recommend them to a friend. Make sure you know what you're signing up for and make it clear what you need. Read the contract carefully because they don't give you any leeway.

I've had two different situations going on, one being the leak underneath my sink in my kitchen. I spoke with someone from AHS, and though I wanted to speak to a supervisor, I found it difficult for that to happen. They said they needed to get some information and I gave them that. Once I got through to somebody, she said that it's their policy to resend the same plumber out to the job, which was fine. I wanted to request a different tech, but the one that came was very professional.

My biggest concern with American Home Shield is with the two people that have helped me with my washer and dryer in the plumbing situation. I've had to have them come out more than one time since the issue wasn't resolved the first time they came out. And so, I kept having to pay extra fees. I paid American Home Shield a lot of money for the techs to come out and have the thing fixed. When I had to call somebody to come back out again, it was a bit much. The plumbers just came back out last night, and they're coming back out this morning. I'm waiting on them to come now for a different part.

Having a warranty has been beneficial, but I didn't realize when I got AHS that I was gonna have the $75 co-pay every time. I just moved into a new place and I feel like multiple things are happening at one time. And so every time, I'm having to keep paying a $75. Also, every time I try to call and ask somebody an explanation for what it's for, they have a very hard time looking it up in the computer and finding that information. So they can't tell me what my service was.

This is the 3rd time we have had to use this warranty on our AC. We live in the desert, and in the summer it is incredibly hot. We turned on our request for service on 4/19/2018. It is now 5/3/2018 and the company, Anthem, that the AHS gave us as a servicer has just told us the part was ordered today and it is 7 to 10 business day to get the part... It will end up taking us a month to get this fixed and we are still out the AC for another 2 weeks. The forecast here is 106 on Sunday and have no idea how to live with no AC. AHS is not helping at all with this. I am very unhappy, again, at this point. Not the first time unfortunately.

Having AHS saves on large out-of-pocket expense. When I had a leak around my pool pump, I put in a claim online, and I didn't have any difficulty doing that. I've done it before. Normally, I've been called the same day but for this claim, it took a little bit longer. It was the second day after. The contractor did fine. He explained what he was doing. He tried one thing first and then stayed there to check it out to see -- and it continued to leak a little bit, so he did something different. He added a different connection to it and there’s no problem at all now. I also referred others to AHS.

I do the claims online and it was fairly easy. But then I had to contact them because I have two homes and I had to put two separate claims. So I had to call the customer service rep and they were very helpful. My refrigerator compressor went out and I had a great experience on that. The company that came out and did the work was prompt and on time when they said they were. The issue with refrigerator has been resolved and it's performing well and adequately now. All in all, American Home Shield is very professional, pleasant and efficient.

I had a claim with American Home Shield for our oven which wouldn’t turn on. We had just bought the house in June. I filed the claim online and it was easy. The contractor would have been there sooner and gotten it done faster if they have worked around our schedule a bit, but the guy was great. He was knowledgeable and he did everything he could. We’re a first time home buyer so we didn’t really understand how the whole thing works and he was able to answer any questions. He went out of his way. He let us know when he was coming to the house so we could leave work at that time instead of taken a whole half-day off of work, which was extremely important to us. He turned on the oven and it worked before he left. I would definitely recommend AHS. It was easy and we enjoyed it. We plan to renew for another year. I’ve already talked with somebody else to make sure that when they purchased their home that they have an AHS warranty on it.

So, he was explaining as he was working. He did a good job and now our plumbing's been doing well. However, AHS is a little expensive. They told me I’m going to have to re-initiate another ticket or do something else. They have to choose, which is painful because they get the worst guys to come out here. We had our sinks and our faucets were declined. They broke it. I’m not sure if the guy who did it pulled it but they have to get him on that and he has to cover it. It went through a lot of fiasco. Also, some of the ladies that tend to the caller are not professional or they are very argumentative. They do anything and everything to try to get out of covering us. Sometimes, AHS is worth it, sometimes, it is not. I have to take a lot of time off from work in order to get coverage.

I had my wife call American Home Shield about our air-conditioner. My wife deals with the submissions of the claim but I have a little gripe or beef. A while back, I had a phone call and the woman said I needed to renew my insurance that time. I said I didn’t really need it and she explained what the insurance covered. I had a plumbing issue in a wall and it's usually accessible right through under the kitchen sink. But a plumber came out and told me that he couldn't do anything with it. It was either we're going to have to tear the outside wall of our household or remove our counter top or cabinets. What kind of crap is that? If the plumber can't come out and fix it without me having to remove a whole wall or vinyl siding or removing my counter top and cabinets just so he can get to it, then I don’t really think it makes sense for me having the warranty. And I paid for it every month.

So, that's something that maybe needs to be brought up in the future when American Home Shield will have their meetings. If they're not going to cover the damage and the people are going to pay for it, then why even pay for the warranty? And I told this to the man on the phone and I apologized at the time for being really angry. I felt bad about it after I got through hanging up because the rep had no idea what's going on anyway and they were just doing a follow-up. Meanwhile, because I threw a big old hissy fit, I had no paperwork to sign for me to know what American Home Shield actually covers. I could have done the plumbing repair by myself but I was working long hours and didn’t have time to do it and it was leaking down the side of my wall and in my house every time we used the sink. It looked very simple but eventually, the plumber didn’t want the job.

That incident needs to be said out loud or needs to be in writing and when people purchase American Home Shield, they need to have all the facts because it's a waste of American Home Shield's time and it's a waste of my time. But as far as our last recent visit from the AC contractor, that man was very respectable and very professional. He came out and did his job and it was over with. As far as the last experience, I would recommend something like that to one of my friends. But the first experience, as far as plumbing goes, no.

I've been with American Home Shield for two to three years. I was very happy with the service done on the dryer. The contractor came and he found out that it was a blown fuse. He repaired it and now it's working. On the other hand, about two years ago, the tech took five trips to my house to get the dishwasher repaired correctly. Every time I have to take off for someone to come out, I'm losing a half day's pay. I could've simply bought a new unit. Also, the duct for my air conditioning sweats when it's running and it drips. The tech said that he couldn't cut into my wall to get at the duct work and he recommended to have an installation company come in and blow installation, but AHS was not gonna pay for that. He also said that if I cut out the sheetrock, he could come and wrap. I paid premiums to not worry about fixing things, and I paid a $100 service charge and nothing was done.

I had a water leak in my AC and the techs were really good and very knowledgeable because it's not a normal type of air conditioner. Instead of having the air over the condenser, it's water, so a pump pumps water to the air conditioner and then, it pumps out. Where the water pumps out was leaking, and they fixed that problem. And then, it started freezing up and needed some coolant, so they came right back up and fixed it, and it has been great.

I called the claim in with American Home Shield. I normally would have done it online but I had several issues. I had some electrical issues as well and they had assigned me a company. When I hung up the phone with the lady, who was fantastic, I called the company and the guy that answered the phone said that they normally get back within 24-hours. So, I waited seven days but never heard anything. I logged on and it said that they made multiple attempts. But they never called so I sent the guy an email and gave him all of my information and they said that they left me messages. When I called back to get a different electrician to come out, I said that they’re more than welcome to listen to my voicemails because there was none on here. He responded back and he wanted my address and phone number. I gave it to him but never heard from him again.

There was another one that they called and it was called Dynamic. Those guys said they would be here between 8:00 and 12:00, and 10 minutes until 8:00, they called to see if we were up. I said I've been up since 5:00 and he said that they were in our driveway. They had all the issues fixed. There were also some that weren't covered in the contract and they pointed it out to me. I said that when I’m ready to spend $800 or $900 to get all the other stuff, I'll be calling them because they were very knowledgeable. The AC has been working fine so far.

I'm constantly coming across other little issues that pop up and in fact, I wasn't gonna keep the warranty because it came with the house when I bought it. I wasn't gonna keep it for the fact that my ice maker didn't work, so I called them and the guy said that the reason my ice maker wasn't working was that the water was turned off. He turned the water back on and there was a piece that he had to replace. I gave him the $75 and he went on about his business. I got up the next day and my kitchen was flooded and I was wondering where the water was coming from. I’m a disabled vet and I had to get down under the sink and turn it off. If he turned the water on, he should have checked to make sure that it wasn't turned off for a reason. I had to pay another $75 to have a plumber come and put a new line in.

When American Home Shield called to talk to me about renewing my policy, I told them I had no intentions of doing that because I paid another $75 on a project that should have been fixed in the first place. And now, I'm gonna have to spend another $200-$300 to fix all the cabinets, so I wasn’t really happy about it. But American Home Shield gave me a month free and partial month to keep the policy, so that reimbursed me the $75. The only thing I have to do is pay to put new cabinets in or the insides of new cabinets. I will now keep the policy. I didn't use it much because I was so upset, but I have called them this time and I have been happy.

The heat pump on my air conditioner wasn't working right. The first time around, the first guy American Home Shield sent out did not install one of the items properly. And the Freon leaked out, which I had paid over $650 and have it repaired. I got to talk to the first guy they sent a little because he came back three times. He told me he was a handyman for 15 years now. But evidently, he did not know how to install the item properly. The technician had to come back and another gentleman came in. He knew what he was doing and did it properly. He had to go in and put in two things, a new switch and a new expansion switch so that it would turn off and work properly. It's been working fine since that particular time and they didn't charge me the second time.

Now, I had a water heater replaced and the people that did that came out and did the job. However, they did not have an electrical person come out to do the electrical hookup so the person that did it didn't do it properly. I had them to come out and redo that. I lost a box that I had on it that turned the electrical switch on and off, so I didn't have the electricity running on the water heater 24 hours. They had to take that off to put in the line properly 'cause they did finally send an electrician out to redo it. And then, it was okay and the permit that they pulled and everything were okay on it so that finally got done.

But the water heater they put in doesn't make a lot of hot water and it's good for two showers. I have a jacuzzi tub and I could fill it up, but it runs out of hot water before it fills up. It's a regular size tub too so I don't know if there's something wrong with the water heater they put in or the jacuzzi's just too small, but it looked like it was the same size as the other one. But the water heater's functional and I guess that's the way it is when it comes to changing water heaters. These were the only two bad incidences I've had with AHS. But they've been out here for my refrigerator and there was no problem. And any time I've called, I've really not had any problems except when I ended up to call back for the water heater people to come out 'cause they kept putting me off to come out. But it got done. It just took a long time to get them done properly and I just got to be aggressive to get the people out here to do the job and to do it right.

In this instance, it was online and it was painless. It worked that I was happy. The telephone people are nice but sometimes it was hard for us to get through on the phone.

AHS sent a good contractor who knew the product. But in the past, AHS had sometimes sent out contractors who didn't know the luxury item. It's a crazy expensive Sub-Zero refrigerator and so, they vastly improved the people they're sending out. He fixed one broken problem but there was another, so he has to come back out a second time. So, I kept calling because they said, “Oh, all that stuffed in the truck.” So I called the next day and their rep said, “Oh, we will send it out.” Well, this was February 8th and I’ve got it all written down. And for the next eight weeks, I called. “Oh, we’ll get it out to you. It’s in your file.” And then I called back and she said, “Well, I don’t know who told you that. I think you misunderstood.” I said, “Then let’s get it out there.”

Finally, two months later, I called and left a message because they wouldn’t even return my calls. I said, “I’m going to the Better Business Bureau.” Well sure enough, the very next morning at 8:30, they had someone pick up a permit and pay for it in the Camas and bring it out. I said, “You didn’t have this. What was Camas’ fault?” “The system was down.” I said, “For eight weeks?” So anyway, I went down and ordered the inspection because I knew they weren’t gonna do that either and the guy comes right out and says the system even got a pass. They use their own type of exhaust. They have dryer exhaust on this and the inside of another type of exhaust, he said, “It didn’t even pass. It’s a hazard. I hope you have a carbon monoxide detector.”

My husband know all this. And so, they sent a guy out to fix it from the same place and he said, “I don’t even know Camas Code.” I said, “Fine. Let me get the inspector out here and he can tell you.” And the Camas inspector came right out and told him exactly what he needed to do and he said, “It’s finished. It’s done. You call me and I’ll be out to inspect it.” The first time they came out, they sent a guy and the other guy didn’t show up. He hung around for an hour or two. I asked and he said, “We’ll all come back when he’s here.” They were here all day till 9 o’clock at night. Then the other guy left.

My experience has been horrible. Their office lied to me. The contractor did get it fixed and the inspector came right out. The inspector in Camas were great to work with and it did pass after they redid that. It was for another four hours or so. AHS couldn’t believe it and they said, “We’ll put this on the files.” I’m a real estate broker and I called my salesman from AHS and let him know too and said, “Yes, we’ve had a lot of complaints about that company.”

I’m thinking why are you still using them? It was the most frustrating thing I’ve ever gone through and usually, American Home Shield is so good, but it was horrible especially when I had written notes on everything they said and they said, “Oh, you must misunderstood.” I said, “You had that permit before you started the job, which is when you should’ve got it.” “Oh, yes. It’s in your file.” And Camas told me they never even came in until two months after it was installed to even pick it up and that’s because I threatened them with the Better Business Bureau

When I call AHS for something, I’d be on the phone sometimes for an hour on hold. But it has gotten better and my inspector and everybody tells me that they are the best company that they’ve had to deal with. Some of the others must be awful. But, if you get a contractor like Northwest Sundance and I’ve recommended that company to them, they’re gonna look at me and say, “Boy, why did you do this? Why did you tell us to get American Home Shield and this is what we had to put up with?”

The baseboard on both sides of the wall starting from my laundry room going to the other side to where the entryway is, was pulling away from the wall. The house has the red and blue hoses that run through the house for plumbing and it looked like it had to do with moisture or water leak as it was right there at the control panel where all of the plumbing was.

I did a claim with American Home Shield online and it was pretty quick. The website was easy to navigate. Although the first time I submitted the request, it didn't really go through 'cause I was waiting for a few days to get a call back and I didn't get one, the second time that I submitted it, it went through just fine. The contractor was good and honest. I was told that he would call whenever he was en route and about 15 or 20 minutes away, he did. He looked at the concern but he said that there was nothing with the plumbing that was causing me issues, so I don't know why my wall is doing that.

It was like it would try to ignite and the thing would shut it down immediately. I called AHS and they sent a contractor to come fix it. The tech went and got another board for it from the dealership here in Tulsa. The furnace was still under warranty, so the only cost was the $75 I had to pay to AHS. The furnace works great now. AHS was very nice, professional and did a good job. They were very responsive and I would recommend using AHS especially in this day and age when you don’t know what you’re getting. We were very pleased.

We live in a neighborhood wherein because of the old piping, it gets a little stoppage through there from time to time. We had a stoppage back in October and PC Plumbing stopped it in 20 minutes, which was really fast. The guy was wonderful, pleasant and didn't make excuses. Then when I called AHS again, a different plumber came out. He was from City Plumbing and I didn't think he really wanted to work. He didn't want to look and had an excuse for all areas. He couldn't even go through because his equipment was too big. He quoted me $950, which wasn’t gonna be covered, and he told me that it was not his fault, but AHS'. So I said “I’ve never had any problems with American Shield before," then asked him to just do what he had to do.

I then called AHS and they were wonderful and responded very quickly. I asked for the plumber that I got back in October and he came out. He went right through the one area that he explained where they went through last time, unclogged the stoppage immediately and then it was fine. Overall, AHS has been wonderful. In fact, I've recommended them to a friend.

I called one day within the week and the tech came mid-day. The tech who came was pleasant and he did what he needed to do. He wasn't in depth. He was nice enough and not trying to be funny, though there may have been a language barrier there slightly. Nevertheless, after the repair, I've had no more issue and everything is going well. If I didn't have American Home Shield, I would have had to pay the bulk of the part that had to be fixed. So it has been very helpful in saving money.

They reached out to a plumbing company that took hours to call me back and when they did, they never showed up AT ALL. When I called AHS to get help they put me on a 45 minute hold while they tried to contact the company. When I expressed the need to get a new plumbing company they said it would delay my service even longer, after I took a day off work all while explaining that I don't have water in my house at all and I have water damage and someone needs to come quickly. The service rep was super unhelpful and borderline rude. Unbelievable to me how this company is even in business.

I took the day off from work to wait for them and when he arrived he said that he only had one item on his list and that was the sink. I said, "No. It's two items the sink and toilet." He then made some phone calls and 30 min later he said that they will send out another technician tomorrow. I said, "What are you talking about? I took today off just for you to tell me you can't do it?"

At this point I was furious so I called AHS and they told me they are looking for someone else and would have to send out another technician to do the work because the last one didn't have the equipment. I get paid almost 300 dollars a day from work and now I have to take another day off which will cost me 600. I could of just hired someone to do the damn work. So the new technician I got online and 3 wayed AHS because they said the work order they got was only for the kitchen sink. I think I'm down with American Home Shield and I should sue for lost wages. I recently made a claim with American Home Shield about my tenant in New Hope, Pennsylvania and called to get a follow-up on what was going on with the request for service. I spoke to their rep directly and I was very comfortable with the information that she shared with me because the tenants gave me some different information. The other part of the call with her was to clarify the fact that the service fee of $75 was not supposed to have been charged to my credit card. That is totally out of order. The tenants were never given the authority to charge my credit card and I told them that they had to pay the service fee. The young lady who spoke with me said she was going to make sure that it would be resolved and she would have notes put in place. However, I'm just opening my mail that I've received about ten minutes ago and I have a past due notice of $75.

I used to have AHS on my home in Maryland as well as the one in Pennsylvania. And I discontinued the service here because I felt, on several occasion, the contractors, who would come to assess the repairs that were needed, were trying to get more out of me. Some of it was ridiculous things. For example, a light fixture had come from the wall. When the fixture was installed, it may have been heavy and therefore, it came through the wall and in my powder room. But the gentleman who came said that he could not fix it because it was not in his preview. Also, some years ago, I had to have my furnace replaced in the dead of the winter. The contractor was giving me a song and a dance about additional cost. I should not have had to pay his higher cost for his product and if I wanted to upgrade, I could have paid the higher cost plus, it was on AHS to fix it for me.

There was also an instance in Pennsylvania three years ago wherein I had great tenants in there then. There was an issue with dishwasher and the tenants were trying to tell the vendor something to help him and give him good information about what was going on. But they told my tenant that it's not my tenant's house anyway so what do my tenant care about whether it's done right or not? That was inappropriate. I have talked about AHS to so many of my friends, neighbors and I've always elevated them. But from these recent occurrences, I have become very disheartened. I'm very dissatisfied with the vendors and I'm dissatisfied that American Home Shield was so disloyal by letting someone other than myself charge my charge card.

Both my outside faucets were continuously running. I tried to fix them, but it was an issue and it would be a lot better off if I had called someone. So I called American Home Shield and the contractor they sent was very professional and had everything in his truck. He had mine, as well as the company's best interest in mind so he did the job quickly, didn't waste any time, and didn't do any more than what was needed to be done. Some of the plumbing was behind a finished basement wall and he was able to get that done without tearing up the wall. I was happy to see that. He was really good and he did a good job. I was impressed.

It was leaking downstairs from the upstairs bathroom and it turned out that the seal under the toilet was loose. I called American Home Shield to submit a claim and the contractor came out a day or two after. They called when they were a few minutes away from the house and they were professional. The guys were there 20 minutes or so and the repair work didn’t take long at all. It was amazing. The technician went out to the truck and got some wax seal they had in there. Since the repair was made, there have been no leaks. I had prepaid my service call fee, so that was easy. That was the first time I did that and we haven’t had anybody come out in a while. I trust American Home Shield and I haven’t had any problems in getting repairs, so I continue renewing my service with them and I've been with them for five years now.

I used American Home Shield about a month ago. I had a heating and a cooling problem. Indoor Quality Services came over and they did good work, but they were unprofessional. I had an appointment with the contractor and I waited and waited. I called them up and I was told that they would be here in 20 minutes. He showed up and had no circuit panel for the heating service. He told me to wait until Monday because it was almost time for him to go home. So after he left, I called the company and a girl ended up taking the panel to the guy and he came back. They were both unhappy. Also, they had no paperwork for me to sign. They sent me an email after I called them a couple of days later and I had to sign it and I didn't like that. I wish I had a paper with my signature on it. I was disappointed with that company. Nevertheless, I love American Home Shield. They are awesome.

There was an electrical issue with the fluorescent light fixture. My only issue when submitting the claim online with American Home Shield was that, at the drop-down selection under electrical issues, there was no place to actually describe the issue. I had to wait for the electrician to call me so I could describe the issue in more detail other than generally as an electrical issue, but he was very knowledgeable and we quickly set up an appointment. The contractor came within the specified time window and he was in and out in 10 to 15 minutes. The problem was simple enough for him to fix in that visit and everything has been working fine since the repair. So far, I've been very happy with the service of American Home Shield and I would recommend them to people if this company is in their area.

We got a water heater that we had put in a year ago and it went bad. The techs put in another water heater, but then they decided that they needed to check out the electrical first. So then, I had to pay $75 for that consult and then there were no findings. They came back again and installed the water heater and then, I had to pay $250 for the installation of the water heater that we had just purchased a year earlier. We pulled out a lot of money out-of-pocket including $75 for the American Home Shield call. Also, I wasn’t too happy with the first guy that came out. Instead of just saying he was gonna replace the water heater and take care of it for me, he decided that he needed to call an electrician. Even so, the other two were fine and they did their jobs.

We’ve called American Home Shield for things that have gone out and by the time it’s all said and done, it takes a long time to get things fixed. We had air conditioning that went out on the 4th of July last year. They were saying it had to be a hundred degrees for them to come out. It was 99 degrees and they made us wait for four to five days. But other than that, the contractors were fine. I just thought they had already installed one last year that we didn’t have to get the runaround. American Home Shield could be better as far as getting vendors that are ready, willing and able to help and getting somebody out here to fix what they need to do and not drag you along.

I filed a claim online with American Home Shield for my AC. My son had been up in the attic and accidentally kicked the switch and we didn't know why it wasn't kicking. So, there was nothing wrong with the AC. The contractor just went up there and flipped the switch. We were looking in the breakers and they went outside and then the unit's not even turning on and it's got a new filter. What is going on? The box maybe got unplugged but no because the unit should be blowing anyways and we didn't think about that switch. But I waited five hours just for somebody to come and flip the switch again.

The contractor set the appointment out for 5 o'clock and he didn't show up 'til 10 o'clock at night. They called me before I left work, which was a little bit before 4 and then like, "Oh, he's gonna be right out there late." "No, that's okay. That's fine." I thought, sometimes I hit traffic. So, I fixed the clock, called and said, "Well, you guys said he would be a little late but can you give me an estimate? Can you check with him, see where he's at?" "Well, he's gonna be there." And that's not the question. I said, "Can you find out?" "Well, that's why we called you to tell you that he's gonna be a little late." I was like, "Okay, you need to find out for me because I cancelled some things that I had and I could've done these things."

I think it was more like close to 7 when I called and they were like, "Well, he's gonna be there." I said, "You need to find out or I'm gonna be calling my insurance to let them know that you guys did this and I'm gonna call and complain." And she's like, "Okay, well, I'll call him." I said, "Okay." So then the guy called me and he's like, "Well, I'm on my 1 o'clock appointment right now. I had to do some paperwork" blah, blah, blah, he's giving me the song and dance. And he said, "I'll be there." And I was like, "But you're on your 1 o'clock appointment and it's like 7 and you said you have a one, two, three, and four and I'm number five?" "I'm gonna be there. I'll be there as soon as I can." I said, "Okay."

Then 8 o'clock comes, 9 o'clock, so about 9:30 or closer to 10, I called him and I said, "You know what? Just cancel this because I have to go to work the next morning and it's already 10 o'clock at night." And he's like, "I'm on your zip code, I'm just around the corner. I was just about to call you. In three minutes, I'll be there." He was here a little bit after that and I was like, "This is ridiculous."

Last year, we called them about the dishwasher once and then the guy came out and he said, "Oh, you just need to use that CLR." We did. It's a piece of crap, it doesn't work. So then, when I renewed the thing again, I told them, "You guys didn't do me right with that dishwasher or whoever you sent. They said I needed CLR and what have you." And they were like, "Oh, we can send someone out and there'll be no charge. We'll send somebody out and we'll be in contact with you." So, I paid the $500 'cause he told me that he was gonna send someone, but no one ever contacted me. So, I still don't have a dishwasher. I don't use that all the time but it would be nice in case if, you had a lot of people and I wanted to just use the dishwasher.

We were having a problem with our refrigerator. The screen that lets us control and have a good temperature of the fridge was not working so we didn’t know if the fridge was working properly or not. American Home Shield was good but we had problems with the vendor that came out to fix the fridge. The person that came out must have been the most talkative person in the world. They ordered two parts for us. When they installed one of the parts, it looks like the skin number is correct but it doesn’t look like it's the right part. One of the features of our fridge, which is one of the main reasons we bought it for, is no longer working.

We contacted American Home Shield again and they sent them out again, and they said, “Nope, this is the right part,” and they closed the claim. I contacted AHS again this past weekend and they reopened the claim and there's a different technician coming out to look at it. As far as the warranty company, we're very happy and they’ve been very responsive.

I called at the end of the week and the tech came on a Monday morning. It was very timely and easy. The tech was here within the four-hour window and once he found out what was wrong, he explained to me why the dishwasher had gone out and put a new part in that he had in his vehicle. He was a very nice man and he was professional. He covered his shoes so he wouldn’t get the house dirty. It used to be that I pay the person here the fee. Now, AHS bills me the fee and there's no money exchanging hands with the contractor, which is easier. I’d recommend American Home Shield.

There are some things that American Home Shield do really well and there are other areas that need improvement. The technicians that they had for a while were good, so our air conditioning and plumbing were good but our high-end appliances are not since they aren’t able to get techs out here. I was waiting and they finally came out, but it was a minor thing that got fixed, and it was more of a mistake on my part. American Home Shield also has a process where if it’s a high-tech or high-end appliance, they would have us hire somebody else to do the work, but it’s very convoluted on how they do it. I have to call them while the technician is here in order for them to verify if they can continue to do the work. Sometimes, it’s in the letter or email as a reminder to do that, but it’s not something very natural for a consumer because I’m involved in the actual thing going on. I just want it repaired and we’ve been waiting for a long time.

So, if I have a statement that shows what the cost of that repair was for that high-end appliance, it should be accepted by the contract especially if they’re the ones that couldn’t find a technician to come out to our house. Yet, they are still covering it. I have two items that I have disputed with them for high-tech appliances and one of which was a technician that they sent out. They didn’t pay because the technician group, A-Tech, requires the homeowner to pay them directly and then to submit it back. The people at the office were confused and they were thinking it was an individual contractor, although it was the contractor that they sent. They said that they also needed a phone call, which is not the case, so I haven’t gotten around to spending the time that it takes to rectify this and I’m out about $500 because of them.

On the other hand, I had a very involved fix for a gas leak at my house and a water leak that was complicated and they covered both. If they didn’t, it would have been very expensive. With the upscale appliance issues I have, if I find the time to deal with it, readdress with them, rewrite the letters and resend the information, then perhaps I’ll get around to it. I didn’t appreciate being declined when I had done all the letters and did all the jumps through the hoop the first time.

The claims were done on their website and the navigation could be improved. There could be an area where it allows us to state specifically what the issue is and why we’re asking for a plumber or something. It might help the coordinators send a better technician out. And also, that way, if they don’t cover that specific thing, they can get back with us. So when we go in, we select what we need. And if we put plumber, it’s plumber, but they have very little differentiation between what it is that we need from that plumber. They should have an area where we can note it more specifically and it might help the coordinators send a better technician out. I would recommend American Home Shield but I would make sure my friends are aware that there are some issues with high-end appliances and that they don’t cover that very well. They have a hard time having techs that will do the work and get out there quickly.

I put a claim then and a guy came out and apparently, there was an electrical wire that looked like something had been chewing on it. AHS denied the claim because they don’t cover pet damage. The problem wasn’t the electrical wire because electrical wires don’t carry water. They tried denying it based on something that’s totally inaccurate. Recently my AC wasn’t working, and I submitted the claim online then I got an e-mail and a text. The contractor came within a very reasonable timeframe and I received good service. The tech was a nice guy and he was very helpful. Since the repair, the AC has been good.

After speaking with a different representative I was able to get a different vendor and get the dishwasher fixed. My only complaint was that we had to contact Whirlpool and ask them to call American Home Shield to explain that their vendor could not accommodate a morning appointment before the vendor was changed. I feel that when I contacted American Home Shield about the problem initially they should have had a way of contacting Whirlpool. Also the first rep should not have stated that I would have to make myself available when it was convenient for the technician. As the customer it should be the other way around.

    Original Review: May 1, 2018

I requested service for my dishwasher. I was able to schedule a technician to come out. I spoke with the technician prior to his first visit and he was able to bring the part with him based on my description. About a week after his visit the dishwasher quit working again so I called back and scheduled another visit. I was told the same technician couldn’t come out as they no longer service my area but another company could do the work. I scheduled the appointment for the next morning appointment available a week later. The afternoon before they were supposed to be there I got a call telling me they don’t do mornings for my area. I was referred to Whirlpool who is the parent service company. They told me that was the only service company in my area and that I would have to call American Home Shield and have a different company assigned.

When I called American Home Shield I was told that it’s not their problem. I have to get my kids from school in the afternoon. I would have to make myself available in the afternoon to get the dishwasher fixed. I requested a refund since that means I have to get the dishwasher fixed myself and I was told that the service fee only covers them diagnosing the problem and that I couldn’t receive a refund. I then requested a supervisor and was told that they don’t have supervisors but I could speak with the escalation department who is going to tell me the same thing, which means either leave my kids sitting at school so I can wait on a technician who will be there sometime between noon and 5PM or pay for it out of my own pocket and just lose the money I already paid. Needless to say my kids won’t be sitting at school. I very highly recommend not using this company. The customer service is nonexistent.

Each time they state there is a different issue with the AC that needs to be fixed, but also tell us that it is totally done and that we need to just get a new one.

When I check with AHS they tell me something different from the contractor and give me the runaround. I finally asked to speak with a manager and (at 8:30 in the morning) they are having too many calls to speak with me... again given the runaround. They are clearly hoping we give up or get so frustrated we just get a new one on our own. They continuously give me the runaround and won't help us get the AC working. There was a leak in my water heater and I wasn’t aware of that at the time because the water heater kept working. It’s a mobile home and the tank is located outside and when I saw it was leaking, I put in a claim with American Home Shield. I called AHS on Saturday and the plumber called on Monday, then he came over on Tuesday. He looked at it and he took a picture of it so he could make sure he got the right part. Then he had to order the part. Mobile home water heaters have the inlet for the cold water located at the bottom and regular water heaters have the inlets at the top of the water heater. There are two inch pipes around the top. Mobile homes have them on the bottom because the waterline runs along the frame of the house and comes up through the flooring. It’s convenient that way.

The plumbing company told me that they had to get the water heater with the inlets on top and that meant they had to extend the pipes from the bottom up to the top and that would be an extra $350. They couldn’t just buy a water heater that was made for a mobile home with the inlet at the bottom. Plus they couldn’t replace the water heater with the original one which is a nationally known brand. It’s a Rheem’s. Home Depot, Ace Hardware and all the plumbing supplies carry them. I should not have had to pay $350 for repiping because it wouldn’t have been necessary. The cost of the water heater is higher for mobile homes. Those are convertible for either natural gas or propane. So the regular water heater is lower in price but it requires the additional plumbing. So they go with that water heater and then charge me for the extra plumbing. I wasn’t quite happy with that but there’s nothing I can do.

When I called AHS and asked why I was being charged extra for the plumbing, the girl who answered the phone wasn’t good at answering the phone. She didn’t understand my question and would call a supervisor. Every time I’d ask her a question, she goes back to the supervisor and it’s another 15 minute wait. Then, the last time I talked to them, they said my claim was denied. So I called the plumber and by the time I got to talk to him, I was already going to the hardware stores and looking for a water heater so that I could have it installed myself because I was told I was denied. The plumber then called American Home Shield and they told him that I was not denied and that only the $350 for the extra plumbing was denied. But that was never explained to me. I thought the whole claim was denied.

AHS could’ve done better. Every time I call them they give me the runaround. First they told me my claim was denied because of normal wear and tear and they don’t cover that, so they denied the claim. They could’ve put someone on the line who actually knew what they were talking about and explained it to me. It seemed to me that I had office workers who didn’t have a clue about plumbing or any other home trades. All they know is what they do in the office. They’d never actually worked with their hands so they don’t know what’s involved. AHS paid off though, so it’s a good thing. Plus, the plumber who installed the heater was a very good worker and did an excellent job. But I have to be very careful when I talk to AHS to get someone who can explain in words that I understand because they explained to the plumber but not to me, the consumer.

Once I got it the kit, I called to let them know and they put it right in. Since the repair, the upstairs bathroom has been outstanding.

Also, there’s a part missing in my air conditioner right now and AHS covered it but they saw that the technician told me that I may be better buying another air conditioner. So, it will cost me about $900 to get freon back in. The air condition people looked like they're trying to sell me an air conditioner instead of trying to fix it. I didn’t like that too much but my experience with AHS has been outstanding, so far. Most of the AHS reps that I talked to were very thorough. This morning, I had a difficulty understanding the young lady due to a language barrier. Nevertheless, I just had to be patient and listen and no one has given me any bad information.

I'm not very happy with AHS right now. They replaced the water heater which a vendor put in incorrectly, and my contractor had to take it out and put it back in again. Now, we have an ice maker that has taken almost seven weeks to get replaced because it did not work and we are getting a huge runaround. Our doors to our independent ovens are broken and they won't shut. AHS called me and they said they'd give me $308.88 to fix them but they're 30 years old and there were no parts. The guy who came to fix the ice maker was supposed to remove all of the parts of the built-in ovens to have them fixed. We usually submit claims online and then we get called by the vendor that comes out and does the repairs. The response time from the vendors is usually anywhere from 24 to 48 hours, which is acceptable.

I'm a real estate broker and last year, I bought 67 policies for my clients. $27,000 plus out of my pocket and my clients were all complaining about AHS. The people who answered the phone that they call are so rude. And now that I have a claim, because I just bought this house, I can see what my clients were complaining about. AHS reps who answer the phones need to work on their people skills. And when AHS can't find parts of a 30-year old appliance, they need to replace it.

We are very rural where we live and our options to have the garage door fixed is very limited as there are only two vendors in Humboldt County. People are complaining about AHS, but it's also hurting businesses because it's hard for a consumer to separate AHS and their rules and regulations from the vendor. So it's not just hurting AHS. It's also hurting Thomas Home Center who's putting in the garage doors, and that's so unfair. I had a client who said that Thomas Home Center lied to AHS and now AHS won't fix their garage door opener. But when I called Thomas Home Center, they said they haven't even talked to AHS. Some people are losing business because of what American Home Shield is doing and that's really sad to me. After I speak with my rep and if I don't get satisfaction for two of my clients that are dealing with the same things that I'm dealing with, I probably will stop using AHS.

We had a claim for our heat pump, which wasn’t producing hot air. We submitted it to American Home Shield over the phone and they were great. The contractor was there within a few days. He was willing to come out the next day, but I wasn’t gonna be home so we put it off for a day or two. When he came, he spent all the time that he needed to fix it, and stayed for four hours. The one thing that bothers me was that the contractor didn't wear booties and I have lighter carpets. He was a nice guy but it was a little disappointing that he didn’t have that common courtesy for me as the homeowner. I showed him the booties and said, "You need a pair of these.” He was like, “Oh, yeah.” And he just walked away. It was like, “Here’s your size. Wear your booties.“ However, he didn’t wear it so the minute he left, I frantically cleaned the carpet so that it wouldn’t stain. Other than that, the heat pump has been performing fine now.

I filed a claim online to American Home Shield for the lights that were flickering. They got the claim and I got an email telling me who was coming and when they would be there. The claim submission process was easy and then Epic Mechanical came. The electrician did not fix the dimmer but he told me what was wrong with the lights because he didn't have one and he said it wasn't covered by the Home Shield warranty. He said that the dimmer was working, that it just needed a stronger dimmer and the wiring didn't need to be upgraded. While the flickering lights still has to be solved, he checked everything and shortened the chandelier in my dining room. That was an extra $50 that went because he said that wasn't covered and so I made the check out to the company Epic Mechanical. So far, so good and I'm pleased enough to continue the contract when it comes up.

When my furnace was blowing air but no heat was coming out, I submitted a claim online with American Home Shield and it was super easy. Everything was super easy to file, and it was really quick response. A contractor usually comes within a day or two. I actually had somebody come out twice that did a second service. It was the same guy both times that came out, and the person that was communicating with me was super responsive and worked out with my schedule pretty well. They showed up right on time, super professional. He knew what he was talking about. He was able to go straight to the thing that was wrong.

He was able to make the repair, but it turned out there was something else going on, and they ended up coming back out and said the unit needed to be replaced, and got it done right away. I was supposed to be doing a cash in lieu of repair and the furnace company sent just all the information out there with AHS. But I haven't heard anything back yet since that time, for at least a few weeks now. But I have a good experience so far. I'm just waiting on my call. Everything has been super professional.

They took a while and they got it done. The contractors were great. I have nothing but praise for them. They were quick, clean and kept me updated. They fixed everything. My central air unit stopped working and I called the number at American Home Shield. The claims rep was absolutely professional, and they were really informative too. However, the first technician they sent out was a different company and he blew us off. He was nice but it wasn’t a concern to him that our air conditioning wasn’t working. He didn’t even run a test on it. He said we needed to charge it, and I said, “It was working and then it stopped, so how can it just be a charge?” Obviously it leaked out, but he said he couldn't run a test on the line. He was a plumber that worked for a plumbing company, and that was kind of concerning. He was also gonna charge me $65 a pound for Freon that he would put in and he couldn’t tell me how many pounds he was gonna use.

I called American Home Shield back and they sent someone new that was from an air conditioning company. He found that the compressor wasn’t working and he ran a test on the line, and it was leaking. So, if we had put all that money back into it, it would’ve leaked back on it anyway. Now the unit is absolutely great. Today it’s supposed to get up to 90 degrees, so I’m excited to have air conditioning. We went a few days without it and the owner of the park here had to open the pool up for us so we could cool down. American Home Shield remedied the situation very quickly. Had I not had them, I would’ve been in trouble and I would’ve had to take care of everything.

The heating element went out on my water heater. I called American Home Shield and the contractor they sent got right to it. He had the part for it, got it fixed and got us back hot water. But I still have an outstanding issue that hasn't been resolved. In 2016 my wall-mounted microwave quit and so the serviceman came out. The microwave was old enough that they could not get charged and it was gonna have to be replaced. AHS ordered and shipped out a microwave unit that turned out to be a counter-top unit. I didn't know this until it went out a couple of months ago. At that point, they’ve refused to do anything about it because it was a counter-top unit and it was not covered in the policy even though the counter-top unit was one that they ordered and had put in.

There was also a problem with getting a contractor to install the microwave. They told me to find somebody who can install the microwave which I did. But it didn't have proper ventilation. At this point, I'm alone with no microwave and I had to go around with the people from AHS. The guy that I talked to about six weeks ago, said he would get in, look into it further and he'd get back to me but he never did. I'm very dissatisfied with the fact that all these things were not of my doing. I've had my home with AHS for almost 25 years but I'm seriously thinking about not renewing my program with AHS and going with somebody else.

And my experience submitting the claim usually has been pretty good. We got a home warranty from the moment I bought the house from the negotiations. The issue started out as a leak on the multi-port valves. The woman had multiple houses and she wasn't at them all the time so she really couldn't maintain them like she needed to. She had a local she used to repair it at a cheap fix. And instead of spending the right amount of money and have it replaced, it was an epoxy fiberglass plug job and it was okay.

It wasn't something I was really worried about because it wasn't excessive, like a drip leak. Then the chlorinator busted and just because it's the original chlorinator, it's wetting inside of those PVC pipes and they get weak. I submitted a claim online with American Home Shield, and while the contractor was there, he found out that the Polaris pump was leaking as well so he took it apart and something wasn't working on the inside and it wasn't repairable so he had to replace it. He did everything while he was there and it's perfect.

Buyer beware. I have been an AHS customer for many years. I've had more bad experiences than good. Mostly you will pay a lot out of pocket for repairs and AHS will not and cannot give you a breakdown of the reason why according to their customer service agents. I have been going in circles with their customer service department for a week. I have been told that such and such department will call you back within 24 hours, then told by another agent that that department does not call customers. I have asked to speak with supervisors and been denied. I have asked to speak with their escalation department, no one was available. I asked to speak with the authorization department, agent didn't have ability to connect me. I asked to speak with contract relations, again they don't speak to customers. They will not email me any information, they only use snail mail. Agent does not have direct numbers to anyone who can help you.

I asked for a breakdown of what was being covered financially by AHS for my repair and was told that they don't give that information out. I contacted the AHS contractor and asked for an itemized bill. The bill that I received was far from itemized. This company is not a transparent company. They will not treat you well as a customer if you have problems. Some of the contract companies they employ are shady. I made a complaint to AHS in regards to a plumbing company and nothing was done about it. I hope this helps save some poor soul out there thinking about using AHS as their insurance for their home appliances, A/C, etc. It is not worth it. Either go with another company (investigate heavily first) or start an emergency savings account.

Diagnostic service just to assess the leaking water heater took about 4 days. Then another week just to get the water heater which is widely available. Now that the water heater is available, the installment is going to take another 4 days due to scheduling of plumbing company. Each time American Home Shield has been used, the service just to diagnose takes too long and then the tech has to submit for approval of even the tiniest part. This adds time to any waiting period that the consumer has to endure.

The first experience was with air conditioning unit which took almost 5 tech visits by various providers and 3 weeks in 100+ degree heat. I had small children in the house and it was miserable. This is the second claim with them 2 yrs later and the experiences is not good. They really need to give their techs more latitude to make decisions about parts below a set amount. They also need to have better response times and turnaround times for critical things like AC and water heaters.

This is the first time I ever took the time to even bother writing a bad review. However this company made me so angry I had to warn others about them. First, they will do almost anything to find a way not to pay for repairs. Secondly, they use third rate vendors and contractors when they do decide to do the work. I had a problem with my circuit board that controls my pool. First the repairman wouldn't fix one of the issues because he stated bugs created the problem, never showing me the part. Secondly the repairman left telling me everything was fixed and working.

I tried that night to run the hot tub and the control unit didn't even recognize that I had one on the system. I called them back, they literally lied and said it was working, then, after questioning them further they admitted it was only working on service mode. So I asked for them to come back and fix it. They wouldn't without charging me another service call. I asked American Home Shield to step in and help me, they totally bailed and stated I would have to take them to Civil Court. This company is a RIP-OFF. Save your money and choose your own more qualified vendors.

The contractor came as soon as they could since they have an appointment open, and they were good. They were nice and on time. They also called me back when they needed to and they were very professional. The water heater is working now and I recommend AHS to anyone that we know who owns a home. They do exactly what they're supposed to do and they don't stop until it's done correctly. Most of the time, it takes them one appointment, but if they have to come back, they come back when they say they’re coming back. Then they’re out of here as quick as can be. Recently, I submitted a claim for an electrical issue over the phone and it was taken care of in one appointment. Since the repair, its performance has been excellent.

We moved in this house in September 2015 and we have American Home Shield ever since. When it was leaking at the hose bib last year, I had it turned off. When I opened it up this spring, it leaked like crazy, so I called American Home Shield. They sent out Stilwell Plumbing and when the their tech came out, he took the guts out and fixed the hose bib. He said there was debris in there. Then the valve that shuts the water off inside started dripping. It wasn’t a bad leak, but I called them back for that. When they came out, they took the packing on it and everything was fine.

American Home Shield does things slowly but surely. And they do not cover a lot of stuff. I had an outside light put up one time which wasn’t working and they said they didn’t cover that. Then, I had the issue with the hose bibs and they said they no longer cover those. I wasn’t too happy with that. I would not go back with AHS and I would probably go with BGE Home because I don’t understand not covering the hose bib or a non-working night light outside. They're both part of the house and for four hundred and fifty-something dollars a year, I assumed they would cover those kinds of stuff.

I absolutely love it, so we recommend them to a lot of different people. Scheduling with their reps is excellent. When my heater wouldn't stop blowing and then started blowing cold air, I submitted a claim with them over the phone. My usual issue is being able to be home to have them work on the problem. But with this heating issue, the gentleman from Austin Heating & Air was very courteous, kind and professional. They ended up having to come out a couple of times after to detect what was wrong with it, but it was fine and he was able to get it fixed for us. It was awesome. They were also at my house the other day for my sewer and they fixed it too. If you're a homeowner, get their service.

Our recent claim with American Home Shield was for the heater. We decided to try the pool here because of the weather, but it was not effective. Submitting the claim was easy. I just made a phone call and they set up the service. It was extremely simple and the turnaround time was fast. I called the insurance company to see if the repair was covered and it was, so we had the contractor do the repair.

I called the contractor to evaluate. They came down and evaluated the situation, and they were good. The heater was an older unit but they were able to test everything out. The communication was great and the contractor let us know exactly what was wrong and the time frame for the repair. They had to order some parts, so we waited a few days for the parts to come in, then the repair was done. The contractor showed us everything that was wrong and everything that they had repaired in the unit. Then they walked us through to show that the unit was fully operational, so we were happy with the work they did.

The unit's performance has been excellent since it was repaired. As a matter of fact, we were just using it yesterday for the jacuzzi. So we're now able to use it on demand and we can expect it to be there when we need it. In the two or three times that we've used American Home Shield, their service has been seamless. If you want somebody that’s gonna protect your investment and not give you the runaround, American Home Shield is the best way to go.

I had put in a claim to American Home Shield in early March for my broken steam broiler and it seemed to have been ignored so I followed up on the phone. The adjuster that I spoke to said that there was nobody in the network who could help me but I was welcome to find my own repair person, submit an estimate and that American Home Shield would take it from there. I had two people come out and look at it. I accepted one proposal and I sent that to American Home Shield about a month ago but I received no response.

I called early this week and I was told that the workman was supposed to have called in while he was at my house, which is something I wasn’t aware of. A written estimate from the workman was not acceptable, and so my claim was denied. They said that I shouldn’t have gone ahead with the work without their authorization. I said I did not and I was waiting to hear back from them and I heard nothing. Then, I got a denial letter. It made no sense, so my experience was very unsatisfactory.

They said I’m welcome to appeal it so the issue seemed to be a matter of formal reacceptance. After the fact, they asked to have the workman call them while he was on my property. To get anybody to do anything in real time is next to impossible and so I interpreted their request for an estimate to be something inviting, which to me is always better than having somebody talk to you. I would tell friends to be very careful about deciding on engaging with AHS. They might be good for small projects and simple repairs, like an oven door but if something appears to be major, my impression at this point is that the company will deny a claim without a legitimate basis. I would discourage someone from using American Home Shield.

I had a hot water heater issue where the pilot light went out. I went online to submit the claim to American Home Shield. I had a fine experience navigating their website and the rep was able to get someone out the next day. The contractor was Ace Plumbing. Ace’s service was fine and they replaced the thermocouple on the water heater. However, AHS didn’t have a good emergency service. I had a furnace problem over a very cold weekend and they were unable to help me at all. I put in an online request and got a notice from the heater people that they got the request and they would contact me within 24 hours. That wasn’t good. So I contacted the contractor and they said they couldn’t do anything about it because they would have to go through an approval process through American Home Shield in order to do off hours repair and they didn’t believe that that was going to be approved.

I ended up having to cancel that request and paid a local heating air person off hours to come and fix the furnace for me. I took care of it myself with a company that I knew would be there almost immediately and they were. So I’m not happy about emergency after hours’ responses, otherwise AHS is fine. Also I don’t pay in advance because for situations like that I was afraid something might happen so I don’t pay until the work is complete.

My wife told me that there was a leak on the sink so I called American Home Shield. A plumber then came out and said it was the garbage disposal. So he put in a new one. I had never checked it after that because the guy said it was done. About a month went by, and my wife said it was leaking. So it started leaking again or had been leaking all this time. I called them back, and the guy said it wasn’t his responsibility. He needed to call an appliance guy for the dishwasher. So the guy for the dishwasher came out, unclogged the dishwasher drain hose and connection, and put it all back together, and it hasn’t leaked since.

My issue was I ended up buying a garbage disposal when I didn’t really have to if the first guy had just looked a little bit further. And I paid three charges of $125 each. I don’t think the first guy was thorough enough, but things happen. I’m not dissatisfied. I'm just a little saddened by the experience that I've had so far. I was in the appliance service industry myself, and I know things can happen, so mistakes can be made. So I understand that. And I might recommend them depending on the income of the people I would recommend them to. A lot of people can't afford $125 service charge anymore plus the initial fee upfront.
