My AC fan went out and the coil was leaking. I filed a claim to American Home Shield and the contractor that they sent out knew what they were doing and they did the job. They had to order a part so it took about 24 hours to complete the repair. American Home Shield is good.

American Home Shield is a good company. Filing claims online is super easy and their staff is knowledgeable and trained. When there was this constant dripping of water from the faucet that we couldn't turn off, Water and Drainworks came out within two days. The guy was really nice too. He knew his job inside and out so he was very experienced. He was able to fix the faucet and it’s now operating the way it’s supposed to.

American Home Shield's contractor repaired our air conditioner when it made noise and quit putting out cold air. The guy that came out was good but I had to call them again because the air conditioner worked only for about a day. A second team came out the next day but they weren't able to get it working properly as it wasn't getting any colder. The house was over 86 degrees every single day and night, and there was no relief. So, I called them again a week later and they sent the original guy. Finally, he diagnosed that they couldn't fix the unit and it needed to be replaced. They said they were gonna order a new one and would wait for American Home Shield to give the approval. It was approved right away but it took an additional week before the unit came in. But once it got in, they installed it quickly. It got there in the morning, they were there that afternoon, and we had cold air that night. And I haven't had an issue since.
One thing that frustrated me, though, was that because the contractor was a small company, they always had to order parts instead of having them onsite. They were always delayed because if they had to order parts, they had to get American Home Shield to approve the part that was being ordered. And every time they ordered a part, it would take two to three days before the part came in. So, they are a good company but they're not great. On the other hand, American Home Shield has been great. Every time that I had to call for something, it was taken care of. They replaced our washer and our refrigerator. Also, this is the second time they had to replace the air conditioner and that's 15 years apart.

My wife submitted a claim with AHS for the washer through the telephone. She used their automated system and the contractor came out within a day. We explained the problem and he went to work. He then explained what was going on and what was needed. He had to order a part, which had arrived, and he'll be back on Monday. AHS had paid for itself every year and we’ve recommended them to several people.

I usually call in to file claims for American Home Shield and it goes smooth for the most part. I’ve had some really great representatives of the company and they assisted me. However, there were some instances where it was a bit touch-and-go for a minute. It was hard for them to understand what I was asking them to do with the claim. My microwave didn't work and it buzzed in and out. Direct Appliance was sent out and they ordered parts but the parts were no longer available. I had to call for the replacement and there was a very extended wait time, 45 minutes to a hour and a half.
I try to stay positive but there could have been better customer service. American Home Shield can try to satisfy the customers as much as they can. They should listen more to the customers especially about the complaint. They listen to their contractors on their side and they mostly take the road of the contractor over the customer, which is frustrating. People make mistakes and so can a big-box company. With the microwave, we were going back and forth. What was told to me and what they said their employee told them didn’t match up. So with a little persistence, we got the situation taken care of. It took more time than I thought it should, but nothing is ever easy. They made it right in the end and that’s all that counts. We got the issue taken care of and the microwave unit was replaced. I also stayed with American Home Shield.

Filing the claim to American Home Shield for my exhaust hood in the kitchen over the phone was easy to do but there were some errors made by the actual rep that took the order. When they sent out a technician for that reason, the technician thought it was an exhaust fan in a bathroom so he couldn't do anything for me. AHS responded very well to the error and they reintroduced another company to come out and take a look. However, the contractor was not well-informed and he did not know what he was talking about. He caused me a lot of headache and a lot of problem about getting it resolved because he himself, did not want to do the job, based on his comments to me. He simply said, "There's gonna be a lot of work to get this done," and he also told me that I would have to take the unit down so that he can work on it if it was approved it.
He said he'll let me know what happens and then he went and told the warranty things that weren’t true about the unit. He told them that it was a charcoal-filtered unit but I did not have charcoal filters in there to get rid of the grease. It was not a unit that pulled downdraft to and it wasn’t one that exhausted to the outside. There were filters in it and I showed him that. They were clean but he told them that the unit should pull out 100% of the grease and contaminant before it goes outside. That's what the mill filters would do and that didn’t make any sense. Yet, he insisted.
In the process of the tech telling me that I was wrong in saying that this unit would not pull out 100% of the grease, he was smiling and looking at me at the time, and I knew then he didn’t want to do the job. But that in itself created a problem for me on the delays and having to go through the process of repealing it which was totally unnecessary had he knew what he was talking about. I got the results through the warranty's claims department which helped me out a lot because I had to send them pictures. But I had to go through a big mess which delayed the repair tremendously.
Also, when I told the AHS rep about how old the system was, that the guy was wrong in what he was saying and that I told him about the 100% exhaust clean, she told me, "We stand behind our technicians." I thought that that was wrong and they should stand behind their clients. She doesn’t know anything about that technician, she never met him, she never dealt with him personally, yet, she's gonna tell me, a client that has been having service with them for years paying my premium faithfully every month, that they stand behind technicians. There's a better way she could have put that.
On the other hand, AHS sent out a GE company which specialized in doing this kind of work and specialized in the product as well. Their tech said that my unit is very clean but over time, it will fill. The unit was purchased back in '02 and installed back in '03 and he said he doesn’t understand why anybody would even make those kinds of statements like the other tech made. They fixed it and it's working fine and I really appreciate that part of it. I would recommend American Home Shield.

I used American Home Shield for an electrical issue. It was my first time to file a claim so I did it over the phone and the reps were very good. The tech who came was also very good. Three items were checked and two of them worked out well. One of them could not be fixed but there was really nothing that he could have done because I had been using the wrong light bulbs. Still, the gentleman was professional. He looked at the items, did what he had to do, told me about the third item and left.

The Freon leaked out of the air conditioner and my wife submitted the claim online to American Home Shield. The first time that they said that they could get a person out, we couldn't be there at that particular time so we set up a different appointment. When the repairman came, he could not find the leak. He put Freon in but AHS didn't allow enough to pay for the Freon. He owned Freon and his price was not much above it so I paid him the difference. He took care of it all in an hour or two and he was professional. He was on time and he was very accommodating to fit our schedule, so I couldn't complain. He did the job in a timely manner, was efficient and had no complaints. Since the repair, the air conditioner is working fine. I was satisfied and we've sent several people to AHS. It is worth the money for peace of mind.

We had issues with our washing machine so my wife submitted a claim to American Home Shield online. It took a little while for the contractor to get out to us and to return the call. It was several hours before they called. We couldn’t do laundry, but we understand it takes time to get people out to us. The tech got out the next day and once he got out there, he was efficient, got it done, and everything is working fine. AHS has increased premiums over the last couple of years, though, and minimized service. So, we're not getting the same level of service we used to with our contract. But other than that, I would refer AHS.

When I submit a claim, I call American Home Shield, let them know what’s going on, and set up an appointment with one of the technicians. I made a claim on our air conditioner that was turning on but wasn’t cooling. The first contractor that came out was traumatic. The gentleman threatened me that he was not gonna fix the air conditioner, and he never did. It was really a horrible experience. After that, we got someone who was very professional. Chad was outstanding. I had some problems after the repair, but Chad came out again, and it was something else that was going on that he fixed immediately. I never have had any problem since then. I'd definitely recommend American Home Shield.

I used American Home Shield's website to schedule an appointment and it automatically assigned GE to me. The appointment was scheduled on a Friday, but usually, when a contractor comes to my house, they will call me. I called GE's 800 number back, then I found out they canceled my appointment because no one was in the house. I told them that I assumed they would call me 30 minutes before they come to my house. If they did, I would have stayed there or I would have found my way to be there. They rescheduled back my appointment in the next week and the person came and fixed my appliance problem very quickly, and I was very satisfied. He fixed it in about 10 minutes, so I was impressed.
We also went into some billing issue because my appointment was made by GE instead of American Home Shield. When the contractor tried to bill American Home Shield, there was a problem, so he had to call American Home Shield to re-initiate the request. The customer service from AHS tried to help different ways. They also tried to re-enable the canceled appointment, but it didn’t work. The rep tried to schedule a new one through the AHS website, but it was set to a different contractor company and could not be assigned to GE. She really tried to help us and she was very nice. However, the website is not user-friendly and not designed properly, so she could not do anything on that day. The technician told me he would work with GE to figure out this problem.
I was happy with the GE service. In my previous requests from AHS, I never got a satisfied contractor and the contractors were individuals, not big companies, so I was very happy the first time I got GE when I made the appointment from AHS. The only thing is they didn’t call me in the first appointment, but that was not a big deal.

American Home Shield has too many accounts now and they can’t properly service most of them. You better get up early in the morning and call them because if you start trying to call them after 10 or 11 o’clock, you’re never gonna get them. You’re gonna get transferred from person to person because nobody ever handles it. You'll get tired of waiting and if you call close to 5 o’clock, you just stay on the phone until it’s closed. When AHS first started out, they weren’t like this, but like everything else, they got too much business, and they can’t handle it all, so the consumers take the hit.
I have two properties and one was never serviced in Oklahoma. The air went out and we called, but that’s not an area out they service. Nobody ever came. AHS told me to get it fixed, and they'll pay for it when I send what they need. I told them that it’s 100-and-something degrees, so they went back and forth, waited for somebody to call, and finally had it fixed themselves. With the other property, I got an oven and it's a GE oven and a cooktop. You have to make sure the oven measurements are right because it has to be restocked and you end up paying the difference. I called in, spoke with several people and finally spoke with someone who told me to just order the oven and not to send it back if it didn't fit because I have to pay a 25% restocking fee.
She told me to call and AHS will give me up to $150 to have the oven modified if it didn't fit, which is exactly what happened. However, they said they don’t have anybody who works for the company and they don’t do that with American Home Shield. They escalated to a supervisor who also said they don’t do that, but the calls of the person I spoke to were recorded and can be pulled. Another person called me to ask if I was satisfied and I wasn't. I didn’t know that it wasn’t a replacement for the same type of appliances that you had. You had to take what you were given and that wasn’t my understanding when I took up the American Home Shield contract.

I felt it was very important to get a home warranty when I bought my home because it's older. The air conditioner, specifically, was original with the house in 1987 and this is Arizona. I had the option of choosing several different companies but what AHS covered seemed to be the best for what was allowed in the contract for purchasing the home.
Our AC stopped blowing. I heard the compressor running but there was nothing coming out. The unit is on the roof so I couldn’t tell what was wrong, whether it was frozen up or if the blower wasn’t working, so I just shut it off. That was on a Saturday evening. I got in touched with AHS and they were pretty responsive. I was pleased. I got a call on Monday and I was hoping that someone would come over during the weekend. AHS told me who the contractor was but those guys didn’t answer their phones over the weekend. It was really hot so I went to my son’s house on a Sunday. I spent two nights there.
It wasn't until Tuesday that someone came out. I was a little disappointed in the repairman. The unit had been off since Saturday night because I was afraid that if I tried to turn it back on again, who'd know what would happen. I didn’t wanna add to any problems there. The repairman turned the unit back on after he went up. He looked at it and did whatever he did. He couldn’t find anything wrong. He said he oiled the blower and checked a few things out. He didn’t tell me what he checked out though. I would have thought he would have told me what the capacitor was doing. He also didn’t leave me any list of things that he did. He couldn’t do anything more and said that if the problem happened again, I should give him a call.
The unit has been working fine since. I was very pleased with the ability to tell AHS what I needed to be done and I let them know that I didn’t think so much of the person that they sent out. I gave them some feedback on that because I don’t have control over that with them. I'd tell someone, “If you have the opportunity, if you compare what your choices are, it's okay to go with Home Shield, but this was my experience.” I'd be honest with them.

We have two insurance policies with American Home Shield. I submitted a claim with them recently for the stove in our San Ramon, California property. When I was trying to turn the stove on to cook one day, the ignition did not work and I needed a lighter to light the stove up. It was easy to set the claim up online and I loved that process. Then AHS called me right back within 24 hours. I got a phone call for the contractor to schedule a service appointment.
The contractor that came out seemed good and knowledgeable. The tech said the problem with my stove was quite common because it happened to him all the time and he needed to order some stuff. But the repair dragged on for a long time. I was using my lighter to light my stove up and that was inconvenient. But it was good that I could still use my stove or else I would have been in trouble.
A lot of stuff had to be ordered and the tech had to come back three times to fix he stove. What happened was that the piece that was ordered didn't work and he had to reorder, and then another piece didn't work too. Finally, the tech was able to get the stove fixed after four weeks. But the service would have gone better if the contractor first made sure and tested the piece, then I wouldn't have had to schedule my husband to be home so we could have the tech come and fix the stove. That was really inconvenient. But other than that, AHS has been good, quick and responsive. I'm very happy with how efficiently the service has been done.

I opened my home warranty case on 10/1 and now on 10/19 my air conditioner is still broke. The escalation team is a joke and pretty much said that there was no one to talk to other than them and I just have to live with it. No one from AHS has called me to explain why they closed my first ticket and opened a second ticket with a later date. After researching myself, I understand that the first company was unable to install the part, the second company doesn't service my area, and according to the escalation team, I need to give 24 hours to find a 3rd company when they did such a spectacular job of not finding anyone in the first two companies. Might as well save your money and pay for repairs yourself if you want have your repairs actually fixed.

First it was a week until someone came to check my oil furnace, luckily I could tell by the looking at it that if I turned on the heat I would have carbon monoxide throughout my house! The flue pipe had rusted way from the ceiling. This very important piece was not covered, even though the furnace was completely unusable without it. I was told by one person it was covered then I was called by another person who told me it wasn't. I called AHS to discuss this without any luck and then was told that I would still be charged the $75 fee even though when I set up the appt I told them the pipe was disconnected. Then I was told a supervisor wasn't available and "wouldn't do anything anyway".
I found another company to do the job for half what the AHS contracted company was going to charge me. The pipe is fixed and the tech suggest I have the furnace cleaned. AHS had a $75 tune-up special on their website so I told him and he said that was a great deal & what I needed. I called (& waited on hold for 45 mins) to make sure this special was for oil furnaces, should have known, it wasn't. But I was told that the service charge of $75 from my 1st appt was removed from my bill. That is why the company got 1 star instead of zero, the women I talked to last knew what she was doing, she gave excellent customer service. The other times I have had to have repairs they have been handled well but this fiasco has totally changed my opinion of the company.

I'd say AHS has "poor" customer service, but that wouldn't be correct. More accurately, they have NO customer service. Try finding a number for the CS department. Good luck. The closest I got was one rep finally saying the best they could recommend was for me to speak to someone in the billing department about customer service issues. I filed a claim 5 days ago and although making the claim request was quick and painless, getting AHS to "authorize" my claim so the plumber can come back out to do the work has been a nightmare. 5 days later, of which in the past 24 hours I've spent 4 hours and 17 minutes on the phone with AHS trying to find out what the hold up is, and I'm still without a water heater and NO water to my house because if we turn it on the unit still leaks and is ruining my carpet!
Finally on day 5 and countless phone calls to AHS and I think they have it "authorized", except now I'm having to wait on their purchasing department to order the new unit? So, being that it is now Friday (I filed the claim first thing Monday morning!) and the plumber just got word that AHS authorizing them replacing the unit... the plumber is already booked for today and can't come out until "maybe Monday". Yes folks, that's an entire week with water. No bathing, no flushing toilets, no cooking, no laundry... you get the picture. To say I'm frustrated, is an understatement.
Good morning Mrs. Simmons,
I understand your concerns regarding the delay in service you have experienced to have the water heater repaired. I would be glad to speak with you and get your issues resolved.

I recently acquired AHS warranty for the house my family bought last year. House was built in 2013 and is in a good condition. As a new home owner, I thought it a wise idea to re-key the locks in the house. Against this backdrop, I called AHS to request for a re-keying of the locks. The lady rep I spoke to scheduled an appointment for me with a company called Realty Rekey LLC and I was informed one of the Rekey company's rep would contact me to schedule an appointment. As was told, the Rekey company rep did call and told me he would not be available until a week from the date of our appointment scheduling. I consented. On the day scheduled for the Rekey rep to come do the re-keying, he was nowhere to be found!
I reached out to AHS to intimate them of the development, a rep by the name of Mike, who would rather talk over his customer than hear the customer's plight, kept soliloquizing while fondling with his computer system. Ultimately, Realty Rekey was contacted and the rep (Realty Rekey) called me thereafter to say he could not honor the earlier appointment because he was sick on the date in question. He promised to come the following day, and true to his word; was at my home, couple minutes before the scheduled time. The re-keying for the door to the garage was successfully executed. Upon re-keying the lock for the door to the main house, the lock got damaged!
According to the Realty Rekey rep, the lock got damaged because my lock was a smart lock! In his words, smart locks become difficult to be re-keyed after 10 years of their being installed. I pointed out to him that the lock was not up to 10 years as the house was just built in 2013. Long story short, he told me I had to go buy a new lock to replace the lock he damaged while he was in the process of trying to re-key it!!! Disappointed and frustrated by the reality of what had just happened, I called AHS to intimate them of the development. Artee, who attended to me, was as professional and empathetic as could be. She promised that AHS would look into getting authorization for the replacement of the damaged lock and enjoined me to call back and check the status later.
I called back about 4 hours later and after about 25 minutes wait, Mike whom I had earlier spoken to some days back, was on the line. After the normal verification process, he told me that AHS could not help with my damaged lock and that the responsibility for the replacement lied squarely on me! I pointed out to him that the damage to my lock occurred while the Realty rep AHS sent to my house, was doing the re-keying. It will be unconscionable and definitely reeks of a company without ethics and/or heart, if AHS insists that I replace my lock that had no issues whatsoever prior to the re-keying done by the Realty rep they sent to my house.
As I write, my $100 deductible has already being drawn from my credit card; the lock for the door to my main house has been damaged by my home warranty company I trusted to remedy damages and my home warranty company rep is affirming that the repair and/or replacement of my door lock damaged by the rep they sent to me, lies squarely on my hands! BBB, thank you for being there and for creating a forum as this.
Hello, Uchechukwu. I regret to hear that one of our service contractors caused damage to your lock on the main door. A Social Media team member will be in contact with you to offer more assistance.

When we bought our house, we didn’t realize that the way they had wired it was kind of insufficient, so we were having an issue with one of our breakers. It was tripping at random times. We put in a request through American Home Shield and they sent out a local electrician, and they were not very responsive. It’s kind of difficult to get them out there and then once they came out, they seem to not be really interested in what we had to say or even really do anything to fix the problem. All they really suggested was to try not to use any extension cord, which was completely inadequate. We ended up talking to AHS about the fact that the issue wasn’t that we have an extension cord. The issue is actually that there are way too many outlets for one breaker, and the gauge of cord that was used was too small.
AHS said that was considered an upgrade and it was not covered by our policy. So at that point, we just contacted our own electrician and have him come in. He did an estimate for us that was way below the estimate that the contractors through American Home Shield had given us. He was able to complete the job within a week and a half at the fraction of the cost.
The only other claim that I’ve made with AHS is for our air conditioner and that turned out okay. They had somebody come out, and they looked at the unit, determined it was completely out of Freon, and then went back to American Home Shield and asked them how best to proceed. They said, “Okay, why don’t you do a pressure test to see if there’s a leak somewhere.” So he did that and they did determine there was a leak. They replaced two valves and that was covered, and then they completely refilled the unit with Freon. We did get a little bit of break in price with the Freon, through the warranty. It was 65 bucks a half pound and then we ended up paying 55 bucks for it, instead. That was partially helpful, but I really like for them to pay more of the Freon cost if that was a possibility.

My dad and I had gone out and when we came home, we smelled smoke inside the house. We have a pair of double doors that hide the indoor air conditioning unit on the wall and when I opened it, its smell hit me. I turned everything off, looked at it, and opened up the bottom panel. It smelled really strong, so I made a call to American Home Shield as I usually do when submitting a claim since I'm not a big online person. I'd rather just call in and be able to explain the problem over the phone with somebody.
The rep who I was in contact with was fabulous, super sweet, and very nice. I explained everything to the young lady and I was kinda frantic. We live in Texas and it was 104 degrees outside. She told me not to worry and they got the issue taken care of. She also made sure that somebody would come out that day to look at it. The guys who came out were awesome. It was a man and his son. It was like a small family business which I like because smaller businesses don't have an overhead, so they're normally cheaper and a lot nicer. I felt very comfortable having them in my home and that means a lot to me. They looked around, did what they needed to do, and explained some things to me like what I can do that will help out. And so far, we've been doing good.

The online process for submitting claims to American Home Shield is very good. It’s like 1, 2, 3, boom! With our last claim, the AC was a little bit low on Freon and the coils needed to be cleaned. Premier Heating & Air came out and the AC has been fantastic since the repair. My experience in dealing with the contractor was excellent as well. We live in a small town and they’re excellent out here. We’ve been with American Home Shield for over 20 years. That's how faithful we've been.

Overall, American Home Shield has been good so far. I usually file claims online and I get a response from American Home Shield within 24 hours. Then in about another 24 hours, they schedule someone to come out. When the contractor comes out, they would ask me where the problem is. I would point it out and they would go from there. Most recently, Murray’s Plumbing and Heating LLC came out for a leak. It was very small and hard to detect. I had that house in the market and when the inspectors came, they found out there was a leak. It was fixed the first time but it came back again. So the contractor came back a second time and fixed it. They changed the flange for the garbage disposal and everything is good now.

I had a dark-spot on the ceiling in my family room. I called American Home Shield and the plumbers came out and looked at it. They said the drywall was not damaged at all. They had to do another hole and I told them it was fine. They said the only thing that they can think of is the condensation of the vent because the air conditioner was on, but everything was solid. Then a gentleman came and did the drywall. He cut the drywall and the support thing. He patched a hole but he didn't patch the other. I told him not to worry about it because I have a friend that can help me do it.
The reps at American Home Shield did what they were supposed to do as far as helping me. I was surprised that the contractor came out so fast and they worked around my schedule. I wanted to be assured that there wasn't a leak up there from a pipe because I've had that before. But they assured me that it wasn't a leaky pipe, and that everything was dry up there. They took the time to educate me and reassured me that it wasn't a flood on my back that was gonna end up on the first floor. So it was a good experience.

Recently, I had leakage on my kitchen faucet. We had to keep an eye on the leak and keep a bucket under the sink to make sure that the water doesn't go all over the place. I submitted a claim online to AHS and they sent a contractor. He came in, replaced the seal of the handle of my faucet, took the lid off then sealed everything around it. He did it so the leak won't drop away to the bottom of my cabinet. Having the leak was a hassle and AHS' contractor was able to fix it. He helped a lot. Thus far, most of my experience with AHS's contractors have been good. They get things done and I know what's going on. They keep me informed if they have to leave and come back.

The contractor contacted me within two days, came out the next day and fixed the problem right there on the spot. So, everything was done within a timely fashion. He told us what the problem was and he was respectful so I didn’t have any problems with him. This is my second claim and the contractors that AHS sent out were very knowledgeable and the customer service was nice. The guy diagnosed it as a poor connection where the electrical power comes into the dishwasher. He repaired it and it worked like a charm. So, we’re very pleased. Initially, there was this confusion if the person that would come out that did the repair was supposed to collect the check or AHS. But that got worked out and we took care of it through AHS, instead of having the technician collect it. So, there hasn’t been any problems since. I made the call and I was embarrassed when I had to call them out two months into it. But it has been a good experience.
I called AHS for an AC issue where the condenser in the attic had leaked through the ceiling and saturated quite a bit of the restroom. The whole process of submitting the claim went really well and they sent out a great, young gentleman to fix the issue. And then, I had the contractors come in to remove the ceiling, but it was still leaking. So AHS called their contractor, Air-Tech, then the tech called me, and he came back. He said the pipe was too short then he put a longer pipe in it and it worked. It was very efficient and things worked out fine. So with that, I'd recommend AHS to anybody. They have done everything that I expected them to do.

My washing machine was making a lot of noise, especially when it was time for it to spin. It was also not rinsing the clothes out well. It would get rid of the water but the clothes were still wet. I called American Home Shield and let them know that I was having problems with the machine and it took less than a week for someone to come out to our home.
The first technician didn't know what he was doing. The first thing he said to me was that my machine is gonna make noise. But then, I knew the machine is gonna make noise. I can't hear my telephone ring and the TV 'cause the sound from the machine was like a jet propeller like the motor was gonna fly out of it. He told me he would be back the following week because he didn't do anything. So, they had to order parts and had to wait until the parts came. When the parts came, that's when the second technician came out and he knew right away what was going on. The washer did okay but now, the same noise is back. Then I heard this popping noise. I called AHS and the technician from GE came back out again, and he said he knows what the problem was. He ordered the part, and the part is here. They're supposed to be coming to put it in.
My complaint, however, is that the person from the delivery service that AHS used to deliver the part, left the package at my garage. My garage is located behind my front door, which means I cannot see my garage from my door. I had people who came and they were the ones who noticed that the box was sitting there on the ground. As a matter of fact, the package had been sitting there overnight because it had rained on it. Common sense would tell them that I don't live in my garage. Nevertheless, I know my issue will be fixed at some point.

The online site of AHS when I submitted the claim for the air conditioner was very friendly. But I wish there is a way that you could ask questions like send them a text and someone will text back. There were questions that I had that it would be a whole lot easier to be able to just go ahead and ask a question to know whether or not this is something that is a normal thing or if I need to get somebody to look at it. I’m a first-time homeowner so a lot of stuff is new to me.
My air conditioner made this horrible sound, and then it just quit. After I put my claim in, I waited about 24 hours, and then looked back on the website and it said to call the contractor, Lanny. Then the contractor was out that night. He was very enjoyable and he got it to where it could work a tiny bit, to where there is air movement. It really wasn’t cold. Then he saw what parts that were needed. He kept in contact with Home Shield in the ordering the parts ‘cause the first ones they sent were wrong. And then he had to go back and do that again. He worked with them really well. The repair took two weeks and it would’ve been faster had the right parts arrived. It was hot and my little cat was panting her little tongue with me. But after the repair, the AC has been working great.
This is the second claim that I filed since I’ve had AHS and they were really quick and they responded nicely. When I talked to them on the phone, they were very considerate when I was trying to explain something and not really knowing what I was trying to explain. And the contractors were respectable when they came into my home. My aunt bought a new house and I recommended AHS to her.

American Home Shield came out three different times for my AC and I never had any problems with that. They diagnosed the problem, and fixed it in a timely, professional manner. When my fridge's compressor went out, I raised the ticket and they sent out a contractor to come to look at it. He diagnosed the issue and said that the compressor’s blown, that it needs to be replaced. I thought that the first guy works on compressors but he doesn't.
So they hired a second guy to come out and then the contractor called and asked what's going on with my fridge. I told him that it's a bad compressor and I gave him the name and the company of the first contractor. He said they don't work on a sealed system, so they're not gonna come out. At that point, I was thinking why did American Home Shield hire the second guy to come if he doesn’t work on compressors? When they hired a third contractor to come out and look at it, I was getting frustrated 'cause it's been a whole week without the fridge. It was a Friday and I'm gonna have to go through the whole weekend without a fridge too.
I got on the instant chat and asked why the second contractor was hired when they don’t work on compressors. Their rep told me that there's no way to know if they work on compressors at the time that they assign them. To me, that just makes no sense. If they don’t know what their skill set is at the time of hiring, do they just pull names out of the hat and hope for the best? It feels to me that it should be their job to relay the information back and forth and hire the appropriate people for the job.
What I think happened was, the first guy came out and said it was the compressor. That’s probably the worst-case scenario, a $300 repair at that point. So AHS was hoping the second guy comes out and diagnose it's not the compressor. Thankfully, the third contractor works on sealed systems but had I not gotten involved and contacted the company and told them about the compressor, I don't know how much more time it would have been. Another thing that is very frustrating is that when I told them in the email that their service is unacceptable, I never got a response from any of them. They just ignored me.

I typically submit claims online and that's easy. But for my claim on the dishwasher, I had a question whether the unit's leaking issue was plumbing-related, where we would need a plumber, or the issue was with the dishwasher, where we would need an appliance repair person. So I called so that American Home Shield could potentially send the proper person out to look and diagnose the issue. But the wait times for the call center were enormous. I was placed on hold to wait for a supervisor and it was a Sunday so I wanted to see how long it would go. I was left on hold for about a half hour then I finally hung up. It's also obvious that American Home Shield outsources it to overseas because there was no one that spoke clear English.
The dishwasher issue got resolved but the problem was that we weren't the ones who put the dishwasher in and unbeknownst to me, it was still under warranty. I called the call center for American Home Shield and the gentleman there told me that he was going to credit my account with the $75 call fee. They said I would have to be charged first and then they would come back and reverse the charge. I asked them if I would need to call them back and remind them on it, and the representative said no. He said he would call GE and verify that the dishwasher was still under warranty and then he would do that for me. But that never happened.
The contractors were great though. One was a GE factory repairman and before the dishwasher claim, I had a local contractor's electrician come out. And both of the service providers were excellent. They were both prompt and on time. The GE guy spent a tremendous amount of time diagnosing and working with the appliance, and was extremely thorough. The electrical guy was very thorough as well and he did a great job. None of them seemed like they were trying to hurry to get out, like where they would get something and run out. They seemed to have tried to spend time getting the job done properly. In summary, the contractors that American Home Shield sends out and the experience in going through their online service are all wonderful. But the call center experience was horrible and if you have to deal with them, good luck.

I got a response very quickly from the contractor after submitting the online request to American Home Shield. It was within an hour and the guy came out the next day. He was very professional and he fixed it. Since then, the microwave has been working fine. However, the first claim I had with AHS was handled poorly. It was for a kitchen faucet that wasn’t working correctly. There was a long delay for the guy to come out and when he did, he didn’t fix it. He came out a second time and he was able to put a temporary fix on it but it wasn’t fixed completely. He told us that we needed to call AHS at that point. He said he was not making any money on that deal and that he was not being paid enough to do it. He said we needed to make a claim on it, call AHS back and tell them we need a new faucet.
I called for a new faucet and it was a nice one. I paid American Home Shield 800 bucks for the year, so it was a good insurance package that I signed up for and they offered me the value of a replacement item that was not even comparable to the faucet. They offered 150 bucks and they said I still had to pay the $100 service fee on top of that. So, I sat there with a kitchen faucet that didn’t work for weeks. Then, they charged me 100 bucks for someone to come out and because of that, they said I was only going to get 50 bucks to put towards replacing the faucet and it was up to me to get it installed. I would consider not doing business with them just because of that person.
I also had a claim for the air conditioner and when I paid 100 bucks for the guy to come out, he charged me an insane cost to load Freon into the system. I would have been better off had I not had American Home Shield and if I just called a normal air conditioning guy to come and put Freon in the system. There was no insurance involved and I felt like American Home Shield was a scam in that regard. For the first two things, it was a waste of money. People understand where they stand on their appliances if they have been living in their house for a while so they would be better off without AHS.

American Home Shield's website is easy to use. I usually submit claims online and recently, we filed a claim for our garbage disposal that wouldn't turn on. It had shorted out and it was leaking underneath our kitchen sink. A contractor was sent out and then we had a brand new one installed the same day, and the problem was fixed.
Back in August of last year, however, the AC went out and we went eight months without an AC or a heater. The compressor, the condenser and a TXV valve or reversing valve had to be replaced. I also had to pay to put a filter and freon in it, as well as to replace the coils. Then we replaced all the parts for a second time, after which they determined that we needed a new unit. So we got a new system at the beginning of the year. But, by the time it was actually getting fixed, the contract was coming up to be over. When we bought the house in March last year, the warranty was included with it and it was about to expire, so they told me that in order to get the unit replaced, I would need to renew my contract for a year. So I renewed the contract, which I paid $800 for, and American Home Shield covered a majority of the repair and they covered for all the parts, too. I only paid $500 plus all the costs every time I had to put in a work order for it.
The most expensive thing was having to put refrigerant in it because they only cover about $10 and I ended paying $500 for that. Then with all the $75 service calls and all the steps they did not cover, all together I probably had $800 in it, which compared to a new system, isn't bad. I get that American Home Shield has a procedure they have to go through and they have to check every route. I've used them for plumbing issues and for appliances, and they outsourced those locally in our area. But that vendor sent for the AC was from Jacksonville, Florida which was almost six hours away. That was weird but that must be the only contractor that they had on their roster there.
Then my stove went out and I used the warranty for that too. The really funny thing was a company called Bailey’s Heating and Air Services came and was able to fix my stove as long as it took for the heating and air system to get the AC fixed. It seems like American Home Shield takes some really cheap vendors because once they installed that new system, I had to pay for a permit to be done for them to install it in the county I live in, and then they failed the inspection. That vendor was an issue in itself, but it's over and done with and the AC is working.

I have had American Home Shield and recently needed to contact them in regards to my water heater and furnace in the past two months. I called to have my water heater replaced and they sent out a service technician to replace my water heater. He completed his diagnosis and told us it needed to be replaced. He then told me it would take over a week and a half to two weeks to come back and install the new one. He was backed up with other work and that was the earliest he could come. We called AHS Customer Service to see if they could refer us to another company. The ultimate answer was "no." They were impossible to get a hold of (incredibly long waits) and rude - do not care attitude. We couldn't wait two weeks for the new water heater so we replaced it on our own. They offered us a cash settlement worth 1/3 of the real cost to replace. It took 8 weeks to process the cash settlement payment.
Our furnace just went out and we once again called AHS. It took them 4 days to get a technician to our house. The first group they referred us told us they no longer work with AHS (crazy). We then had to go back into the vacuum's black hole of customer service to wait and get another company to come out. The company came out today and told us AHS would authorize a very low end, cheap, inefficient furnace and we would have to pay $1,100 out of pocket. The furnace guy gave us an option to upgrade to a Carrier and that would cost us $3,200.
My experience is that AHS is a company that does not live up to minimal standards and expectations. Their business model is to collect premiums and when a repair is needed utilize the cheapest, unqualified repair companies that install low end, low cost replacement equipment to maximize their profits. They invest very little in customer service and don't care about the customers needs. The attorney general or some gov't agency should investigate this company for fraud.

Our water heater was broken and the American Home Shield contractor is coming tomorrow to replace it. They came out once and they recognized that there was a small fire down in one of the thermostats and that some wires were melted which is dangerous, and it was old too so it has to be replaced. My wife filed a claim through the internet which is the easiest way and it is usually how we do it. The contractor who came out was a very nice and very friendly. He was supposed to come between 12:00 and 4:00 and he was there hours earlier. He called me if I'd be available but I could not. He waited in front of my house until I came. He was super nice.
Our house has natural gas which we only use for our fireplace and heater of the pool. I was planning, when one of the equipments fails or dies, I will change them to a gas-operated one. It was also what I thought when the contractor said that the water heater has to be replaced and that I'll just pay on top of what AHS will pay. So, I called AHS and I went with the cash-out option. I didn’t wanna do something that was irreversible so I asked the rep if I can change it back if I change my mind and he said, “Yeah, you can do it.” He xplained to me these are additional costs so I would have to pay a lot to change it to gas water heater.
I was assuming what I have to pay is just pulling the pipe from that side of the home. I even talked with the guy who was out there if it was possible to run the gas pipe around the house because inside the house, they would have to cut the wall and it would have been more expensive, and the rep said yes. At the end I noticed that on top of what AHS would pay, I would have to pay $2,500 extra. So the estimate was around $3,500. I realized it was not an option for me at this time. I called American Home Shield back and told them to cancel the cash-out option and that I just wanted the replacement. And so far, everything was good.
Unfortunately, it has been a full 12 days and we still have cold water and I have a baby at home. I asked them about it on Tuesday and they said there are still no update. On Wednesday, the lady told me she will contact AHS and will let me know but I didn’t hear anything back. Tuesday and Wednesday passed, Thursday I called American Home Shield and the gentleman explained to me that the purchase order was sent out to the contractor on Tuesday. When he said that, it was late in the hour and I was busy at work so I could not call the contractor. I called the contractor on Friday and I said that AHS told me two days prior that they sent the purchase order and the lady told me, “No, they just sent it yesterday, last evening.” So somebody is not saying the truth. I pressed her to make an appointment and she made an appointment for Tuesday and the guy is supposed to come out tomorrow.
I've been an AHS customer for many, many years now and I also have two properties that I run with AHS. There are certain things that are obviously not covered but for the things that are covered, I am really happy overall with American Home Shield. They've always been responsive, trying to do things in a timely manner. That is very important to me. So everything perfect. Some of the contractors that they've sent out were good, some of them were bad. We had an instance wherein our free-standing ice maker was broken in our home and it took a very long time to repair. Apparently, it had a special part that had to be ordered. I understand that they had to do something like that. I have recommend AHS to some friends that have come across some issues.

"Customer Service" has gotten more and more difficult (spent the better part of two hours on the phone a couple of days ago, mostly on hold, got disconnected twice), and the website has gotten completely useless -- Can't access our contract, can't submit a service request on the My Accounts page (is it instructs us to do); under Active Service Requests our current open service request is not listed (nor is the last one from several months ago); and I can no longer use the HVAC technician that has given us the most reliable (and least expensive) service over the past 3 years. And I haven't even begun to get into how little they've covered the past 3 times we needed service. Their "home warranty" service is a complete waste of money and time. We're done with them.

My box would keep tripping when I had the arrow on and the fuses in the box were getting hot. I couldn't have a lot of stuff on at the same time. Every time I turn it on, a couple of the top fuses would get hot. The first time contractor AHS sent out wrote up everything that they said was bad with it. The guy told me they were old and that something was wrong with the wiring as well. AHS denied the claim. At first, they said the contractor didn't give enough information. Then when the contractor gave additional information, AHS denied it and I had to wait a week and a half on that. I asked for a second opinion and a company came out. They got back with AHS, but I haven't heard anything from AHS yet and I'm not too happy.
When I set up an appointment with AHS, they find a company. Sometimes the company is able to fit you in and come the next day. But sometimes, you won't get a schedule until the next week or five days away. It's the luck of the draw. I like AHS though. The contractors they've sent are not people-persons, but I haven't run into any bad ones. Some speak more than others and some explain more than others, but it hasn't been to the point where it is unsatisfactory.

My washing machine died and American Home Shield sent Sears to repair it. Sears replaced several parts, but one part that was to be replaced was broken, so it had to re-ordered. The delivery of the parts was very slow. I wouldn't recommend Sears as a repair shop at all. When they got it all put back together, the washing machine still wouldn't run. So, they called AHS, and they all decided that we needed to replace the machine. It was a very prolonged time period before I had a washing machine again. Once I got the okay to go and purchase a machine myself, I did that. It took a very long time for AHS to reimburse me the amount that they were willing to pay for the machine, which was much less than what I actually had to pay. So, I wasn’t a happy camper.
My past experiences with American Home Shield have been positive. I have had some other previous problems that they solved almost immediately, and it was with a different repair company. But this particular experience with the washing machine was very negative and I'm very dissatisfied with it. AHS needs to not keep people on hold for over an hour before being able to speak to someone. They also need to find repairmen that know what they're doing.
Good afternoon Sally,
Your feedback regarding your most recent experience is greatly appreciated. I am pleased to hear that the replacement was completed despite the delay in service. I would be glad to speak with you and address any remaining concerns.

Our refrigerator stopped cooling completely. At first, it was just the top portion, then it was the bottom portion. We submitted a claim with AHS and the first person that they sent called to cancel. They told us they couldn't reschedule us till the following week but we told them that we already waited. I called back AHS and the person that was on the phone helped me. He was wonderful and he told me that he'd put me on hold and he'd see if he could get somebody out here within the next 24 to 48 hours. And he did.
Word of Mouth came out and their tech did well. He told us what was going on, what the situation was in reference to what the issue was, which was the compressor, and he said that it was a known problem with the refrigerator that we had. He said it was too expensive to fix it, so it would be better just to replace it. So I researched it a little bit because I really liked the refrigerator I had. I bought it because I had researched it prior and it was a big refrigerator that held a lot in the top and had the icemaker on the side, not in the door. Then it had a separate icemaker on the bottom. So when I researched it, the manufacturer was still making the same refrigerator, but they were making it with a new compressor, so they fixed the problem. So I went back and I purchased the same refrigerator. Overall, other than the wait time when I talked to the assistants and the rep, AHS was very helpful.

I was visiting my son in Florida when he had a problem with his hot water heater. He had American Home Shield and they were able to send somebody out to fix it right away. I thought it was a great thing to have so my husband and I decided to get it. That was about eight years ago and it was sure nice to have even though we've never really needed it until recently. My faucet and my garbage disposal were leaking. So I called Home Shield and they did a really good job as far as letting me know what I needed to do. Then I heard from Thomas Brothers Plumbing right away and we were also able to set the appointment up right away. Two days after I called, the contractor was able to come out and the plumber was great. He was prompt and professional. He explained how things worked and got the job done well. It was the first time I had ever made a claim with AHS and it worked well. I was very satisfied with my experience.

We like American Home Shield a lot. They've been here every time we've called. Submitting claims with them has been very good. I call them and set up an appointment. We don't have to pay until after the techs come to the house, which is awesome. We pay the $75 deductible and the guys take care of us. The technicians that they've sent out were well groomed. They're knowledgeable, very pleasant, and they made sure that we were taken care of. If they don't have a part, they'll go get it and come back. They all have done excellent work and they've all fixed the problems, and did it a minute time so we didn't have to wait around.
American Home Shield's customer service is really good. The only part that I don't like is waiting on the phone forever. We got locked out of the house one night and it was almost a two-hour wait. I finally stopped because it was midnight and I'm like, "You know what, we're just calling a locksmith. I've gotta go to bed." I recently had a claim for an appliance issue where they sent Whirlpool out. The appliance wasn't even a year old and it stopped working. So Whirlpool came out and replaced the parts. They didn't even charge us because it's still under warranty.
We've been with American Home Shield for two years. Initially, I went online and said, "You know what, we're buying an older home. Nobody had lived in it for three years. Let's go ahead and purchase the plan," which I did two weeks before we moved into the house. And it was ironic that the day after we moved into the house, the compressor on the air conditioner stopped. So, they were out here that day to repair it. I've recommended their service to a few people out in our complex and they have purchased. I've had three friends so far buy from them, and they've all been satisfied too.

Our refrigerator wasn't getting cold and we had food that was molding. My wife was very adamant about the refrigerator. She called AHS and spoke to someone. A technician came out and was there for 20 minutes. He told my wife that he had to order a part. But we never heard anything else from him. Meanwhile, we were having to throw food away. I called American Home Shield to get some kind of an update and I was told that I had the option to get the refrigerator replaced because the part could not be found. It was no longer being manufactured. Our problem was resolved and we got the refrigerator replaced this past Sunday. AHS covered most of the cost, we picked out a refrigerator and we had it delivered.
We also called AHS when we had an issue with our garage door opener and our dishwasher. Like with the refrigerator, my wife was adamant about the dishwasher. But we figured out what that problem was for that. When the garage door issue happened, I took care of filing the claim on my own. In getting an AHS rep, sometimes the wait can be a very long time and I get irritated. But as far as speaking with someone, it has been great. I would highly recommend AHS. It is worth it to have that peace of mind. But I'd warn others that sometimes it’s a little bit hard to get through.

One time we had an issue with our AC compressor and we submitted a request online to AHS. Their site has been pretty easy to use. It's simple and self explanatory. Their contractor came and diagnosed the problem. They wanted to fix it and got the part in. When they did, they found out that the compressor had gone. So, they went back again, ordered a compressor and put that in as well. Other times, contractors have come out for our microwave, our oven and our heater. AHS has filtered and gotten us decent people those times. I'm happy with AHS and I recommend them.

When we had a claim with American Home Shield for our AC, they sent out the contractor, AAA All Brands Appliance, and the tech came and looked at the AC. At that time, he said it was cooling because my sister, who was there at the time, had a different technician come out before him and this other technician had worked on the AC. But I had the tech from AAA check to make sure because the other technician wrote that something needed to be done. The AAA tech looked in and everything looked good, but he still attempted to fix whatever he could.
It has been easy to submit claims with AHS. Typically, I do this both online and over the phone through their automated system. That was how I submitted our last claim. afterwards, it was pretty quick to get a contractor to contact us. There was only one contractor that we had an issue with, but AHS sent another company out fast and we didn’t have to pay an additional fee. So far, the quality of the repairs that were made have been good. Everything has been good with AHS.

They come in and do what they need to do. The only problem I've ever had with AHS was when I had to get my hot water heater replaced. It took forever. I even called them about it, which I don't usually do since I do everything online, because I was upset. But for only 45 bucks a month, having an AHS warranty on all my appliances is a great deal. We had to pick from a certain amount of washers and then the delivery company delivered it, installed it, and put the old one away. The contractors take a little bit of time, usually 24 to 48 hours, to get back to me but once they do, it's pretty much streamlined. AHS is reputable and stand behind what they do.

Submitting claims with American Home Shield is simple. Whenever I have an issue, all I do is call in. I get the automated service and it directs me to service call. From there, they simply tell me that I’ll be contacted within the next 24 hours. But the automated service is not very specific. That’s the problem because the warranty doesn’t cover some of the things that actually go wrong and sometimes, you need to talk to a representative before they assign a contractor. Then they can say if something is not covered under the contract. I know that we all have a contract but with some of their stuff, you just don’t know. But when you’re trying to get to a representative, it’s almost impossible to do. I would like to have a representative somewhat easily available, if it's possible at any way, for something other than the standard dishwasher or plumbing.
Also, some things can’t wait for 24 hours. If I have a commode backing up in the bathroom, that is something that needs to be dealt with immediately. I’ve had this issue happen to me once before and what I’ve had to do is to call an outside plumber. That's why it would be so important if we could dial, get straight to a representative and say, “Hey, my commode is backing up now, and I need somebody out here now.”
With my recent claim, American Home Shield sent J Coppock International out. They had to replace the rotors and the belt of the dryer. They pretty much rebuilt it from the inside. So they had to order the parts and it's an LG dryer. The technician had to make a second visit but it was not his fault. He was very professional and he did a really good job. He came out about a week later and the dryer is working fine now. Not a single sound comes from it.

I had an air conditioning issue and after I called American Home Shield to file a claim, they got in touch with Joe’s Mechanical out of Terre Haute. Joe's has been Johnny-on-the-spot. They came out and tested, and said that the air conditioner was not completely bad, but it was heading that way quickly. They doubted it would make it through the summer, and so they replaced the unit with absolutely no hassle. The young man that came out was Derrick and I couldn’t have asked for a more polite and straightforward tech. He told me what the problem was and did top-notch work.
The AHS reps have been top-notch as well. I've only had one encounter with a gentleman a couple of years ago that didn’t seem to be really interested in his job. The rest have been very upfront in taking care of the issues that we've had. Whenever I call them, they get a hold of a repair person either the same day or the following day, and they’ve been out here normally within two to three business days to repair whatever the problem was. So, as we have done numerous times, I would suggest for anyone interested in AHS to take out the policy.

They went to work right away, got it fixed, and the house started cooling down within 30 minutes of them getting there. I also had one plumbing company come out, and on their receipt, I wrote, "Very hateful, would not listen to me, pretty much did what they wanted to do." When my husband got home, he got a little firm with AHS and told them what needed to be done. AHS said that my husband was correct and actually did it the right way. I would give them a triple A, star, they were great.
American Home Shield is well worth the $66 a month. On some things, it's taken a few days to get it done, but there are certain things you can wait on, and there are certain things you can't, and they make a good decision on, "Okay, we're gonna expedite this. If we can't, this can just come at a small, slow pace, and get it done." But they've always gotten everything done.

When they come and do a repair, I get a note on email or a text message from American Home Shield. If they do something outside of American Home Shield, I need to be notified, too. So, a tenant would not go in and say, “Oh, repair my TV or repair something,” that I have not agreed to.
Two past experiences with my latest tenant made me a little uncomfortable with AHS. First of all, they charged my credit card --- the tenant will just say to charge the credit card on file and of course AHS will charge mine for the service calls, which should not have been the case. Then, there was another situation where the contractor went into one of my homes, and the tenant told him to fix this and that. The contractor wanted to charge me without talking to me first. I had a problem with a washing machine in a house that I rent out. The rubber gasket inside the machine is black and as I was taking the clothes out of the machine, the black thing was coming off on the clothing. A tech came and said that that the gasket had to be replaced. He called back about a week later and told me that he already got the gasket and can do the job.
It's a washer and dryer where the dryer sits on top of the washing machine and the tech told me to make sure that somebody takes the dryer off before he could do a repair. But they did not mention any of that when they came to the house originally. I also couldn't remove the dryer and neither can my tenant. I asked why they can't do it and the rep said that they didn't have two men crews. I asked why are they coming out to repair washing machines when they're a heating and air conditioning company. She said, "Well, we kinda do that also." I told her, "What do you mean kind of? What is kind of? Describe that, define that to me." She asked why I was giving her a hard time but I said I wasn't and that they're the ones giving me a hard time.
I called AHS back and told them the same story and they were very cooperative about it. They sent a different company and the tech came but made no mention of replacing the gasket. He spent quite a bit of time scrubbing it and said that it was the best he could do at that point but he thought that would work. It's been a month now and my tenant seems satisfied with it.
I was really upset with AHS when it first happened but they rectified the situation. I even told the rep I was gonna cancel my contract and if I ever had another problem and they sent me that company, I wasn't gonna accept it. I won't have them come to my house again. But they took care of the problem and that's all that counts. They sent an inferior company but it wasn't their fault. They put the new part in and we noticed that it heated up, but it still wasn’t drying. We called and the young man came back out. He got an error when they did the diagnostic. He said he'll be able to fix it so he came out again with another part and he said that it was fixed. But when we turned on the dishwasher, we were hearing that the water is going, but it’s not washing at all. That was not the issue before and that went on for some time. Last week, I got an email saying that AHS will pay 300+ dollars towards the dishwasher. I found the dishwasher at Home Depot and purchased it.
My AHS experience was horrible. Right now, my oven has not been working for six months and I’m very afraid. Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up and I can’t get AHS to come to some resolution. I’m completely frustrated. Also, I purchased the home package with them - the pool and the house warranty. Apparently, I’m paying for full coverage, but they don’t cover anything for the pool. The policy says they cover pool heaters but when our pool heater blew about a year and a half ago, they didn’t fix it or replace it. I’m really frustrated with them. Nevertheless, I still continued to pay for the warranty and I like the quality of the folks that they send out. They are very professional. I just don’t like how they move the business along.

We have to call another company to check out the washer, that has an oily film in it, but yet DALE'S APPLIANCE in HOT SPRINGS AR says it is ok. I will be canceling policy when my new one takes effect. AHS did not take care of their client.
Hi, Dianne. I am so glad that the appliance has been replaced and installed. Thank you for your patronage.

It's been officially 2.5 weeks without power in my home. American Home Shield (AHS) sent out a company called "At Home Services," based in UT. They were incredibly rude, unprofessional, and late. They did a half-assed job "diagnosing" the issue. So poorly, in fact, that AHS rejected the claim because the report didn't make sense and was "lazy" and "unclear" (literal language from American Home Shield Authorizer). Then the At Home Services company said the repair would "take too long" and I needed to "shop around" for an electrician who "wanted to do the work." Apparently, At Home Services doesn't enjoy making money or surviving as a business.
AHS got me another company to come out and do a "second opinion" report. This company claims that since AHS hasn't signed the work contract, they refuse to work with AHS and require me to pay out of pocket. I told this to the AHS rep, who reported this was against their policies--that she'd contact the business and then call me back no later than 4 pm, Tuesday evening. The time came and went, no call. Had to call back and re-explain the situation to another random-ass employee who said she'd have my original agent return my call. And, as you could guess, it's been crickets. I will NEVER work with American Home Shield again. I hope the company goes bankrupt and all you lazy, careless employees lose your jobs! Absolutely ridiculous! You're a scam!

Bought my warranty 10 years ago. Mainly for the cost of replacement of new unit! Sales always sells the fact they will replace a broken unit! Every contractor has told them my unit was old and needed to be replaced. Jan, 2018 bad weather and Heating unit stopped Heating. I hired outside contractor because they had no one available! This Company was a recent contractor is why I called them, had been out on several occasions. He examined my unit and said it needed to be replaced. Wrote up a replacement order and that the pan was leaking. They did not take their advice. Sent out another opinion.
Second opinion said it would be ridiculous to replace the pan on that old unit that was barely getting it, but that American Home Shield will not replace your unit. They will part it to death via the American Home Shield contractor. 9 months later still waiting on someone to replace the pan, different contractor States I have mold that completely voids my whole contract for 10 years on my AC unit. The pan is Rusted and half the screws to the unit because of so many contractors have not put the screws back into the cabinet.
I am very unhappy and I don't understand how all of these recent claims have been taking care of. I need to know what it takes to get a new AC unit that they keep putting Parts on and now tell me I have mildew in it and it's not good anymore and that they don't cover mold and mildew! HVAC companies do not have a license to diagnose mold and if it has rusted inside and has all this crap inside going on it's because they let my pan sit there and have not fixed it because it's too much to take the unit apart and put a pan in it. I am a very upset homeowner.

I had several electrical issues going on with the chandelier thing over the table and with the bulb rack in my dining room. The exhaust was acting up in the bathroom then the front porch lights and a ceiling were also doing some. I submitted the claim with American Home Shield over the phone and talked to a human. I made sure I hit that option to get to an operator to speak with so I could request a subcontractor in my community. I had an issue when the computer scheduled somebody over the phone, trying to request. I hit that option as I couldn’t get to a live customer person. So, trying to correct that situation and request for someone in our community was difficult but I got it straight after two days.
The local contractors were good although I had one from northern Virginia where he fixed the problem but it was a hot mess. It was my first request and to get the items ordered and shipped, it took a month and a half to get it corrected and it wasn’t cool. This is what made my decision to have somebody in my community. Nevertheless, everybody has been professional. They would call us back and say that if we continue to experience more problems, they would come back out so that was really nice.
The last company was awesome and fantastic. The gentleman that came had to replace some wiring stuff and he went to Lowe's and got what he needed. But it's best when the contractor has stuff on the truck because they would call and try to get a little ballpark of what’s going on after American Home Shield schedules the appointment. At times, they may have stuff on the truck, which I like, or they could get what I need so they could correct it right then. Three of us in the family have American Home Shield and I talk about that at work and different things. As long as I get the local contractor, we’re good.

I contacted the service on to fix my broken refrigerator shelves and dishwasher. Before the Sears technician arrived the technician called to tell me the refrigerator shelves could not be replaced because it is considered cosmetic. They are broken, not merely scratched??? How does anyone know it is cosmetic if you are calling before even arriving?! They were also called out to look at the dishwasher. The year old dishwasher was considered unfixable. I was away at Army reserve drill and had someone to meet them there. I have now called AHS a total of 5 times, with 45 minute plus wait times each time. I am actually on hold as I type this. Surprise, another 45 minutes wasted.
Oops, they finally answered me and said they can send someone for a second opinion for the refrigerator but I will be charged. Wait?! Where was the first opinion?! Sears never even opened the refrigerator because they were instructed by AHS that it was not covered (sight unseen). So now I have to pay for someone to actually open the refrigerator?! Huh. Seems AHS should be acting as my representative and not working against me. At least wait until the technician tells them what they actually see prior to telling them it’s not covered, especially when the contract says all parts. And by the way, it is now too late to talk to the purchasing department so I get a wait on hold for another hour tomorrow. Yeah me!

I submitted a claim to American Home Shield online and the first electricians that they sent out looked at it and said it needed to be replaced but they couldn't do it because they didn't have a ladder that would reach up high enough. They were scheduled to come to do the repair but when I called them, they said that they can't do it and they don't have a ladder that's high. I called AHS back and they sent out another company , Cutting Edge Technologies & Designs. They looked at it and said that it needed to be replaced and they did. Everything is fine since then. It is fairly easy to submit claims with American Home Shield. I used the mobile app and submitted the claim easily and seamlessly. I immediately got a little confirmation email that said they were gonna contact us. It was fairly smooth. We had a gentleman come out for the garage door and then we had somebody else for electrical. The garage door guy was good but the electrical guy wasn't great. My question was whether I had another slot for another breaker so that I could buy one. In my garage, there was an outlet that had two wires coming out to like a little bitty transformer that's like three by three inches. It's for a doorbell but it's not wired properly. It should not be outside of the wall with electrical wires coming to it. It is a safety issue and I wanted it to be addressed. I asked if we could run some conduit above to get that done properly and the guy said he would have to see if it's covered.
Another safety concern was in my panel. There were two lines coming through on one of the breakers, which is the standard 30-amp breaker. So there were two positives and two negatives. There were two things wired up to one circuit and that's not proper. It's not safe. So I wanted to get that addressed. Again, he said that he would have to see if it's covered and that he would put in the request. But that was as far as it went. He was there 10 minutes, max, and that was it. He didn't do anything physically and that interaction wasn’t great only because nothing was completed and I never heard back. The timeline was short because my policy was soon to end. But there was never any follow up or completion of that even though it was within the time of my policy still being valid.

Submitting a claim to American Home Shield is easy enough. But sometimes, getting somebody out here isn't so easy. When we had the furnace situation, Hundley Plumbing did a good job when they came out. They did that Johnny on the spot. However, with the water heater claim, the contractor had to order a valve. The original claim went in May and they got the valve and got it in the 1st of September, and that was quite a while. They had problems getting the part for some reason.
The water heater and the furnace worked fine after they worked on it. But on the dishwasher, the contractor came out four times. And each time, they said something else was broken or that the part that was sent was defective. It wasn't until the fourth time that they finally ordered a new dishwasher. And when they sent the dishwasher out, the people who delivered the dishwasher wouldn't install it. They said there was some plumbing that needed to be done because the fittings were of a different size. So, I had to call back and get approval for installation. On that issue, we finally had them pay us $125. I got my own installer and I now have it in.
Overall, I'm very dissatisfied with AHS. When I call in, I have to call three or four times, and the company that they send out has to be on the line for an hour in order to get approval. That is unacceptable. Generally, I've been tempted to drop them and find somebody else. But so far, we've always gotten it resolved before it was an emergency.

I’ve had a long relationship with American Home Shield and I pretty much always have come through. They’ve done a lot for me in my home but this last episode, there are a lot of things that were wrong with it and it took about two weeks. They installed a new air conditioning unit for me. It was under warranty but it broke. They couldn’t find anybody in the area during the heat wave that was certified to work on a warranty equipment, so it didn’t get fixed on time.
I had to keep on following up. When I asked to be switched to a supervisor, they disconnect me. When that happens, you have to start the whole process all over again and there isn’t even a way to communicate online. You can’t get a little more descriptive when it goes beyond to requesting somebody out to fix my AC. I only spoke to two people that their primary language was English and most of the other people were very softly spoken and spoke with an accented English that made it very difficult for me to understand them.
When they tried to switch me through to other people, I get disconnected and I spent hours. I ordered a copy of my phonebook because I spent hours on the phone trying to get through. When I try to talk to the people that I got a chance to talk to, I’d ask questions. On at least one occasion I’m more given incorrect information and other times I couldn’t even talk to them because they would respond with what seemed like a scripted dialogue. Because they couldn’t find anybody, they have a policy where they can ask you if you wanna find someone that’ll work with them and I was so desperate that I tried to do that and I ended up calling two local distributors to see if I could get the names of people that might work on Payne equipment. I followed up with those contractors and none of them were certified to work on warranted Payne equipment.
It was really an odyssey of frustrations and I have health issues that were being exacerbated. I have breathing issues and I have a heart issue. It was extremely hot and I live in a garden unit in a condo that was extremely hot as well. They ended up resolving it by installing a new air conditioning unit in September. I’m glad that they decided to put in a unit that someone could service. Ultimately, they exceeded my expectation with that but the whole process that was used to get there was a nightmare. They should have more people that speak English well so people can understand them. It’s very frustrating especially when I can’t talk to anybody and I’m desperate for an answer to find out what’s going on.
I also wish there would’ve been someone that I could’ve reached and spoken to during all of the time that this was going on. It was very frustrating but they fixed a lot of things in my house, and usually within a very short period of time. This was very unusual and it culminated with my cat who was also very sick at the time, suffering from the heat, ended up dying. It was a nightmare. On the other hand, O’Connor HVAC Inc., the contractor, was great. They were trying to reach American Home Shield to make a decision to move forward. I was calling them too to see if they’d heard anything because I wasn’t really having much success with American Home Shield at the time. AHS has also sent out other people from electricians, plumbers, to people for my heating system and they have great people that work for them in the area. I’ve always been happy with the service people that they sent over.
I’ve referred many people I know to American Home Shield because of all the good things they have done and I would highly recommend them. I’m still with them and even though I think of not being with them, I can’t imagine not having them because of how supportive they’ve been and I’m trying to let that outweigh all of it and how favorably they resolved my issue. They are a good company to be with but somebody dropped the ball by installing equipment that they didn’t have service people in the area who were licensed to work on. It’s not just finding the cheapest equipment because ultimately, it ended up causing them a lot more by having to put in a whole new different company type unit.

I have five homes and two duplexes, and I have around seven different policies with American Home Shield. The drain broke in one of my units and AHS wanted to call a plumber that was gonna come five days later. I said no and I told them that the sink was leaking in my kitchen and needed to be fixed that day. They ended up sending somebody the next day, but it bothers me when I call and tell them that I need something taken care of right away, and they don’t think it's that important.
Another experience I had is I had a garage door opener that malfunctioned and they sent a company from Bakersfield to Porterville, California, but when the guy got there, he was a total con man. He told me that the garage door opener wasn’t covered for the problem that it had. He called the insurance company and told them that it was done due to abuse, but I said that there was nothing abused there. I just had the garage door put in four years previously. He also told me that the rollers were bad and that I needed to have a new unit put in, and he could do the whole thing for $500 some dollars. I told him to pack his gear and get out of my house because the rollers were in perfect condition and I could have a whole new unit put in for $370 some from any local vendor. I called AHS and they said that they couldn't cover it if I called somebody on my own. I was about 500 miles away from home, so I was not very happy with that situation.
This was not the first time they sent me somebody that was not qualified. They also had a plumber up here in Eureka, California and the most that he did when he came was tell me about how he used to be a plumber in Hollywood and that he serviced all the stars. He did a couple of things that weren't up to code and I told him about it. He seemed to think that he could blow smoke in personal places, but I told him, “Absolutely not. We're gonna get a permit, and when they come and inspect it, they’ll tell you that it needs to be done.” And they did. The inspector came and told him that the pop-off valve had to be routed outside of the building, which he didn’t do.
A washing machine recently quit in one of my rentals, and I called AHS and told them I needed somebody to come and check it out. However, they told me that I wasn’t covered for it, so I ended up buying a new one from Poletski’s. Poletski’s was excellent and I worked with them right off. The technician's knowledge was well-exceeded-as-necessary. I extended the coverage to cover the washing machine and it is covered now. However, I would like AHS to have some operators that speak English and answer the phone within a reasonable amount of time. I've been on hold with them sometimes up to 45 minutes, just waiting for someone to answer the phone and that’s ridiculous.

We submitted the claim and we didn't hear from anybody for about four hours. I didn't feel like they had dragged their feet though. I just had never done it before so I was a little unsure that I had done it correctly. And once we heard from somebody, everything was smooth sailing. The repairman was out first thing on Sunday and he fixed the air conditioner on a holiday weekend.
The repairman was very professional. I was even busy and not home so I asked him to text me. We texted back and forth and he answered any questions above and beyond the repair. Sometimes, I would like to get another opinion from somebody that I’ve worked with in the past because I noticed a lot of times, they like to send out the same people. But they were open to that, which wasn’t a problem. I had some issues when we first bought the house and it seemed like there was some work done, from looking through the closing documents and stuff like that. There was work done on some of the appliances by some of the same companies that were coming out when I called them. So, I wanted to get another opinion and I asked if I could. They have certain contractors they call and the ones that I wanted were still under the working relationship whatever of the warranty company.
We had people come out and look at our furnace and it was just one of those deals where the same contractors were coming out to look at that same furnace. A company was recommended to come out and they were open to it. Although most recently, the dishwasher wasn’t working and the wait was pretty long on the phone. During 90+ degree weather, with the temperature at 90 degrees and climbing in our home, we were told that a service contractor had 24 hrs to contact us and another 24-48 hours to schedule the appointment within. In other words, we could be without working AC for up to 3 days with 3 young children in our house in south Louisiana. I should have gave up on it then.
From that point we had a revolving door of contractors who either didn't have the knowledge or couldn't be bothered to make a diagnosis on our AC. The AC didn't cool and we constantly had leaking issues where the indoor unit poured water through our ceiling. (By the way, AHS conveniently does not cover secondary damage - even if it's ongoing for a year!) We could not get anybody to actually diagnose the problem and request authorization to fix. Our drain line was "blown out" at least 4 times in a year, outside coils were cleaned twice and we still had no resolution.
In June, our warranty expired and I was torn about what to do. We hadn't received any benefit whatsoever from the service, however, we still had unresolved issues with our AC and were at the point where we, at least, weren't being charged a service charge every time a new contractor came out to try to diagnose the issue. The only cost at this point was my time as I took off work to spend time waiting and dealing with the contractor. To make this clear - looking at my online account, we had 8 service calls since July 2018 alone, so you could assume that every other week I was spending time with contractors that I should have been working or doing other important stuff and this doesn't even include the time I spent on the phone with AHS.
I spoke with a salesperson, expressed my concerns about the effectiveness of the warranty and asked if I could cancel at any time. She advised me that the contract was month to month, so I could cancel as needed. (This is important - you'll see why if you make it to the end). Anyway - In the meantime our water heater went out. The plumber that American Home Shield sent out quoted us $2500 for out of pocket costs to "bring the water heater to code" - essentially, we needed a drain pan installed.
I was told that our only recourse for this outrageous amount would be to pay an additional service fee to have a 2nd plumber come out and give us a new quote. Obviously, we took the cash in lieu and received ~ $400 for our water heater which cost $500 to buy and our time and effort to install... could be worse, I suppose, but of course now the water heater would no longer be covered by AHS since we didn't use a licensed contractor. The day after our water heater bit the dust, we once again had water pouring out of the ceiling. Another HVAC tech came and went with no resolution in sight. I was at the point where I was in tears every time I had to call AHS.
At the end of my rope I agreed to have one last HVAC contractor come out. He decided that we were low on freon (despite the fact that every other contractor that bothered to check for this advised that freon was fine), there must be a leak and proceeded to indicate that we were missing several other parts such as a liquid line dryer, and drain line insulation. This, of course, voided any chance of AHS covering the AC issues regardless of whether these "missing" parts contributed to the issues or not. He did not perform a leak check. I was quoted $1800 out of pocket for the work to fix these issues and informed that once the work was complete I would have no trouble getting AHS to cover my AC. Why on earth would I want AHS if I have to pay for everything out of pocket and you are supposedly fixing my issues?!
Of course, I declined and decided that now is the time to go ahead and cancel my warranty. I called today and requested to cancel and was advised that I would be charged an administration fee which is the same amount as my monthly payment to cancel. Never once was this mentioned when I spoke with the salesperson and was concerned about renewing. I can guarantee that I would not have renewed had it been made clear that there would be a charge to cancel - I am not interested in giving these people any more money than necessary.
Since I still had AC issues, I called an actual experienced HVAC technician to come out last week and for $390 he installed a drain clean outline (something that several techs had informed me was not necessary, mind you) so that I could pour bleach through and try to clear out the sludge build up that was causing the water to back up out of my drain pan and through my ceiling. He informed me that if we couldn't get the drain clean enough with bleach, we may need a plumber, but once it's clean we can continue to complete regular maintenance to prevent the issue from happening again.
He informed me that my freon levels were fine and he didn't see any indication of a leak and that basically I was getting scammed. I tend to believe this guy who has nothing to gain by lying and a new customer to gain by actually providing good service. He's also been in business for 40 years and has only 5-star reviews on Google. He refuses to work with Home Warranty Companies because of the way they operate.
Bottom Line: I've paid $720 of my own money, plus $625 of my home sellers money for this warranty. I've only received ~$400 of benefit. So I've recouped 30% of my costs - not including my time in dealing with this mess, completing my own installs and then of course the $390 I paid to a reputable HVAC tech to actually DO something. I've continuously felt like I was backed into a corner, did not have a choice in companies or even the contractors that were sent out (even when I specifically requested a certain contractor not return, he was sent back again), and AHS will do anything they can to get out of covering an item.
This product is not even close to worth it and I have been continuously misled, lied to, manipulated and otherwise rendered helpless in the care of my own home. AHS claims they sell peace of mind, but what you get is stress, expense and a complete lack of ownership from anybody who actually works for AHS. My recommendation would be to take the $67/month that you would spend on your warranty and put it in a savings account. Use that money when something goes wrong - don't assume that AHS will be useful when it comes time for a total AC replacement - chances are they're find a loophole to make sure it's not covered OR the technician will find a way to recoup their costs (or just get out of the work) by giving an outrageous quote. Plus, many issues can be repaired by a good technician anyway.

Worst company and customer service I ever experienced. I called 10 times since July to get a reimbursement from them. Every time I called someone told me they would fix the problem and give me the reimbursement. Every time I called as if the issue was new. They promised me and gave me their personal accountability to fix my issue. They all lied to me and continued lying to me every time I called. No one ever followed up. I still don't have the reimbursement of $125. Considering they continue to charge me monthly premiums ($82 on 2 properties), I decided to cancel warranty for both homes and just take the $125 loss. I don't believe they care about giving the customer the money they deserve. However, they would continue to charge customers premium. So I dropped American Home Shield.
Good afternoon Ms. Chen,

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR ANYTHING. I've attempted to make 2 separate claims in the past 2.5 years. Both services are covered but they send HORRIBLY UNQUALIFIED technicians and you have to wait days for someone to come out. Once they get there they will not be able to fix it the first time (because they work for a horrible contractor and are unprepared). Then you wait several more days for the "repair". You are MUCH better off saving the money monthly or paying a reputable local service provider (especially for something time sensitive like HVAC). STAY AWAY!!! YOU ARE NOT SAVING MONEY - ONLY WASTING TIME AND MONEY!!!
Good afternoon Mr. Keith,

I provided details on my experience, the company's social media expert asked for more information (I don't know why social media either. I don't have a problem with their website, Facebook, etc. It's their actual service that's an issue). Anyway, we had a pool electric issue, the guy came out, fixed a portion of the problem and said he needed a light for some of it and we needed a regular electrical guy to fix the rest of it and we had to put it another service request. He would be back in a week for the light. Found out that the pool light wasn't covered, which is fine, we would just pay the guy. A week later, the pool guy shows up, asks us what he was suppose to do as it wasn't written down, we tell him pool light, he says they don't replace pool lights. Did he not know that a week earlier?
In the meantime, we put a service request in for the electrical issues. An electrician came out, said he didn't have the part needed and would come back. (Why would a company waste a service call and not reach out to the homeowner is beyond me). Also, AHS' website doesn't allow for comments about the issue, only to request a specific trade (plumbing, electrical, etc.). Days later no electrician came back or called AND AHS charged us for the deductible for work not even started. We ended up getting a more reputable vendor as it was the only way to get the work done. Really, I'm not making this up!
Now the dishwasher isn't working, which we think is related to the electrical issue that happened weeks ago. We are afraid to request service through AHS Warranty for fear of more deductible charges for work not completed and more unresolved issues. Honestly, I have never had to use a home warranty service so much on any home I've purchased but sometimes you need to. At this point, it would be best to get a full refund of all deductible amounts paid and the premium fee and be done with all these issues. All companies will have customer service issues, what separates good companies from bad ones is how they handle the issues. I'll keep you posted as to what happens next. AHS, please respond with a name and number of a manager that can handle this. I don't have the patience to deal with your customer service reps any longer (see previous reviews on that issue).
Good afternoon Mr. Johnson,
I understand your frustration regarding your ongoing experience to have the electric service claim repaired. I would be glad to speak with you and assist with getting the issues resolved.

I requested service for a pool pump that is making so much noise it’s disturbing my surrounding neighbors. Not to mention obviously not working as the manufacturer expects. Their “tech” came out and said it’s not covered because it’s not completely broke down. I admit it’s maintaining proper pressure but it sounds like a bucket of bolts are in the mechanism. I asked “Is it supposed to sound that way?" (It’s a Pentair WHISPERFLO, keyword whisper.) The “tech” admitted no. I asked “Is it making that noise because something is worn out and not working as intended..." "Yes" he replied. “But it’s not a mechanical failure” he kept saying. "If it’s not a mechanical failure then what is it?" He didn’t answer.
Frustrated I left a bad review for the tech. Shortly after a representative of the company contacted me and went back and forth with me again then finally said AHS wouldn’t replace it because it’s making a noise...it’s not a mechanical failure. I wish I could attach a sound file of how loud it sounds, it’s extremely loud. It’s actually embarrassing it’s so loud. So I will replace it on my own and once again AHS doesn’t fix something they clearly should. If my furnace was heating at 1% will they not fix it because it’s not a complete “mechanical failure”? Buyer beware, AHS doesn’t hold up their end of the contract.
Good afternoon Mr. Radabaugh,
I understand your frustration regarding your most recent experience to have the pool pump repaired and the diagnosis of no mechanical failures. I would be glad to address your concerns and assist with getting the issue resolved.

My microwave had a problem and I submitted a claim online with AHS. It was easy and the time that it took them to get back in touch with me and have someone out was sufficient. The contractor who came out was excellent as well. He resolved the problem quickly and was a nice guy. He was also friendly and he cleaned up. Other than that, you can never get anybody on the phone with AHS if you have a specific question that is not on their website and that is frustrating. Plus, there are a couple of companies that I would never have out to my home again. But on the flip side, there are a couple that I would like to use repeatedly when the time arises, but there is nowhere to specify that type of comment on the website when you need service.

I had a refrigerator issue and American Home Shield sent out a repairman that was not capable of repairing it. I refused to pay that guy as he couldn’t work on it. The next one that came out was very nice, good, and really comfortable with his knowledge. He fixed the refrigerator immediately, and I paid for the $75 service fee. Then AHS kept billing and telling me I haven't paid. I thought that the refrigerator was one of the ones they kept trying to bill me for and I called at least nine times. They said that it was for the water heater and they took that out automatically. Then we’d get another bill and they would say that I haven't paid for this. It’s driving us crazy and that’s still going on. But I’ve been very fortunate with not having to wait on the phone for 16 hours to file a claim. Other than the refrigerator, I’ve gotten really quick responses on my repairs. The problems that I have had have been fixed pretty much and I would recommend them.

American Home Shield is really good. When the washer stopped working, I submitted a claim online and it was a breeze. You just create a claim and go from there. I opened a ticket, they sent a text message with the status, and AmeriCare Appliance Repair showed up and fixed the problem. Their tech figured out that something got disconnected. He said that he looked at the washer, that there was a panel issue, and he fixed it. Then, AHS took the deductible from my credit card and I didn’t have to pay anybody anything.
I’m happy with American Home Shield and so far, the contractors that came out have kept the area clean and they put on the shoes and the cloth on the shoes. Also, after I submitted my claims, some of them got resolved the next day while some of them took three days or more than two weeks. In one case, one of them took a day or two before they came out and in another case, it took four days. But nothing was major. And sometimes, they had to come and order parts then they'd give me a heads up that the parts were in. Other than that, they knew what they were doing and they were experts in the field. I would recommend AHS. I used DTE before and they had a $0 deductible plan. Even the premium is a little more with AHS compared to them. But I don't mind paying a higher premium with AHS and if they come up with a plan with a lower deductible than the $100 I'm currently paying, I would appreciate it.

Submitting a claim with American Home Shield online was super easy. We have called them a couple of times and it has been a smooth experience both times. One time, we had to have somebody come in for our air conditioning and before that, it was for our dishwasher. The night that our AC went out, I went online on my phone and submitted the claim. I got an automatic email and text which gave me the number of Appliance Express, the contracting company that was gonna be in touch with me. If I did not hear from them, I could give them a call. But I heard straight back from them.
The tech that came out was a young kid and he was very thorough and polite. He put on booties over his shoes so he did not track anything in the house. He also gave us an idea of what the problem was with our AC. It turned out that there was an electrical problem with it. So, he called his manager to confirm that it was something that could be handled through our home warranty, and it was. There have been several issues with the vendors that American Home Shield sends out. When I called them, I told them I wasn't sure where the water was coming from. So, they sent someone out to look at the washing machine. It wasn't the washing machine, it was the actual plumbing. Then they charged me $75 for that. When they sent someone out to do the plumbing, they tried to charge me another $75 when I initially told them I didn't know where the water was coming from. Plus they didn't indicate who they were sending out. They should be patient enough to understand what I'm saying and send the right person out. If I ask them not to send a certain vendor out, they shouldn't send that vendor. Other than that, things are fine.
I also had a little issue with the fact that when I initially started with American Home Shield, the price was one thing but now it appears to be going up. At some point, I may have to switch to another insurance claim company just because it's $60 a month now and that's pretty high. Overall, I would refer them but I would caution the cost.

The water from the AC wasn’t seeping into the ground and it started overflowing into our basement. There were two people who came in. The plumbing guy that came out couldn't do it as well as it was not his area. So we took his help in fixing the showerhead that was leaking and he was good.
We ended up paying 100 bucks for air conditioner contractor and we didn’t like the fact that he didn’t give a solution that really worked. I've been an American Home Shield customer for a very long time and my experience with submitting a claim online has been fantastic. It's very easy to put in claims online but if I call in, I will be on hold for half an hour to 45 minutes. Also, every time I called, I spoke to a girl and she was not really on the friendly side. The reps are probably overworked or swamped with calls but when I have a problem at my home, the last thing I wanna deal with is someone with an attitude.
When we first signed up with AHS, it used to be a little bit more difficult. One time, they sent out a person who wanted to fix the AC but did a shabby job and we had to get someone else. He added freon and charged more for recharging the AC and my bill came out to be huge compared to just having out of pocket. I complained to AHS and they gave me credit and had someone come out and fix the unit.
I also put in a claim online when the inside fan of my AC broke. It was one o'clock in the morning and someone got in touch with me at eight o'clock in the morning. The techs could make it the same day but I couldn't on my part. They came out the second day and they found that the unit needed more work so they got the approval. They did not only do the work that needed to be done but they also did other maintenance stuff that prevented the unit from going bad in the future. I have two homes with AHS and I'm happy and satisfied. Their service has improved since I started with them six years ago and the last few times we've had an issue has not been difficult. There are two light switches and one was on when the other one was not on. We had only been in the home for a little bit so it was just a glitch on how to make it work. The electrician was great. In fact, the company was so good that I used them again three more times to replace some light fixtures for and update. I really liked them. American Home Shield's referrals are great so I appreciate it.
I did that claim online and the online site was great. The only glitch is when you go online, you can schedule for service but then if you wanna cancel you’re already charged. Then the process of getting refunded, if you change your mind or you find that it's working, is the hardest part because the lines are really long for answering.
When I had a leak in my roof, I wasn’t sure if it was a plumbing issue but I went online and they charged me $75. It wasn’t a plumbing issue so I cancelled that and they got a roofer to come out. American Home Shield refunded us but there was a long wait and the first representative didn’t process it. So a week later, I called back and waited again. Then the representative reprocessed and the money was refunded. The only thing I would recommend is expediting more callers to get through and then training them a little bit more on how to process a refund and the whole process if something doesn’t work. It was frustrating to have to keep calling and waiting. But otherwise, the service is great.

My garbage disposal was serviced and replaced by American Home Shield in my recent experience with them. I submitted the claim over the phone and the process was easy. I had great interactions with the fantastic contractor, High Priority Plumbing. Two gentlemen came out. One was the manager and the other guy was training. They were very professional guys, handled the problem very quickly, and knew exactly what to do. Since the replacement, the garbage disposal is fine. Also, whenever I call American Home Shield for a situation, the representatives are always nice and they answer my questions. I never have any issues dealing with them and they’ve always been very professional in addressing whatever situation I may have. I’ve even talked to other people about American Home Shield as well.

Our garage door would go halfway down then go back up. We didn't want it to stay like that because inside the garage, there is a door that is the entrance to the house. There was also one guy who was coming around. He told me all about a security system and he said there had been a lot of vandalism in the area. He said people were finding a way to get through the garage doors. That was why I called American Home Shield and the lady I spoke to was very helpful and knowledgeable. She scheduled appointments, sent me an email and told me who was coming. Then I set up the appointment. She did a good job.
The garage door had to be manually pulled down and locked. We come home late at night and we had to get out, go in the house, get the door, go back to the car and then pull the car in. When the technician came out and checked the door, he called American Home Shield up and verified some coverages to see what was gonna be covered and what was not. After he got off the phone, he put something on the door and it was working. It goes up and down now. But he said the problem may happen again because of a part. It won't be their problem though. It'll be the LiftMaster itself.
The garage door has been there since 1990 and he said our home warranty company doesn't like to replace things. But if something breaks and goes out, why wouldn't they wanna replace? If it goes out, the warranty will probably cover the motor. But there are some things beyond what they can do. Nonetheless, the service is worth the money that I pay American Home Shield because one call would be more than that. And every time I've called, they've helped me out. Whatever's broken, they fix it.

I've been trying to get our A/C unit repaired since July. They were quick about getting a company out the first time but once the technician gave an estimate of over $5,000 to repair the unit I've gotten nothing but the runaround. First I'm told they will need a second opinion. I wait... Then after several days I call to see what's going on as I've not heard anything. Then I'm told to get and pay for the second opinion myself. I find a company and call them. Then I'm told to go out and buy a portable A/C unit and they will reimburse me $125.00. One that will handle 250 square feet of living space cost $200.00 and requires 220v. I called back and spent an hour on hold while the service agent read the notes in the file to find out why the company to give a second opinion has still not received the work order they need to come out. Now I'm told the authorization department will have to call me back to discuss the claim. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Thank you for allowing me to assist with a resolution to your heating and air conditioner repairs that were completed.

These companies take your money, and when they need to replace something, they just find something so they don't have to. Will be calling a lawyer.

It is now Oct. 15, 2018. On July 24th, 2018 I called to report I had a leak in my living room ceiling. They sent a contractor out to check it and see what the problem was. He said that the duct work was old and the bands on it had cut into it and rusted and it had made holes in it and the condensation was leaking into our ceiling. He also said that the whole duct work needed to be replaced and that he would send in the request for it. We waited and waited and never heard from him, so I called him to see what the problem was. He said he was waiting on approval from AHS to do the work. So, we waited some more. In the mean time, I called AHS and the contractor several times. The contractor would tell me one thing and AHS was telling me something else about why the work had not been done. This was numerous calls between July 24 to Oct. 15, 2018.
Finally, my husband called the contractor to see what the problem was at the end of Sept. and he said that the material was coming in that Friday and he would be here on the 28th of Sept. to finish the job. He did not show up. I called AHS back to let them know and find out what was going on. They called the contractor and the contractor was suppose to call us. The contractor was telling us that he was waiting on AHS to pay him for the job so that he could get the material to come and finish it.
AHS is telling me that they never pay the contractor until the job is finished. My husband finally called the contractor again and he told my husband that his company was a small company and that he just didn't have the money to buy the material to finish that job. I told my husband why didn't he tell us that to begin with. Now it's been almost 3 months and in the mean time, we have water leaking into our living room ceiling which is a very expensive wood ceiling. When I ask AHS who is going to pay for our ceiling that is being ruined because they haven't gotten anyone out here to fix it, they just say, oh we don't pay for damages, we only fix the problem.
Well, the problem still hasn't been fixed and my ceiling is being ruined. At the time the contractor first came out to check the problem, he told them at the time that there was probably already $2,000.00 worth of damage at that time, and it's been three months since then and the problem still hasn't been fixed. Now they have sent me to the approval department that last time I called to see why it hasn't been done. He called the contractor to find out what the problem was and he finally told him that he didn't have the funds to pay for the material to finish the job.
So now, he has sent it to a different department so they can find me a different contractor in my area to do the job. I told him they should have already done that because when I called the week before, I told the lady I spoke with that I did not want that contractor sent back to my house for anything! So it should have been sent to the dispatch department the week before to find another contractor to finish the job. That was last week I spoke to someone at AHS the last time, and I told him I would give him 2 days to find someone else and get them here to finish the job. He said someone would call me in the next 24 hours and let me know who would be coming out to finish the job.
We are into the next week and I have yet to hear from anyone about coming to finish the job! I have tried 3 times to call them today to find out what the problem is, the first time I was told it was over and hour wait time, so, I hung up and was going to try back later. The next time I called they said it was over a 1 1/2 hour wait time, so I decided if I was going to get to talk to anyone I had better stay on hold, so I put the phone on speaker and laid it down beside me. It was on hold for about 45 minutes and then a voice came on saying that they were having phone problems and to call back later and it cut me off. I called back again and it said it was over and hour wait time again and to put my name and number in and it would have someone call me back in 30 to 45 minutes. I haven't had a call back yet.
I am sick of this garbage. My ceiling is being ruined because they haven't gotten anyone out here to fix it in 3 months and yet they tell me they are not liable for the damage that it is doing to my ceiling. I mean really, how long do they think they are suppose to be allowed time to fix anything before they get the job done. I think it's time I called the commissioner of insurance for my state and find out a few things, and let them deal with the situation, and if that doesn't work, then I guess a lawyer is the next step. Then they can pay to have the ductwork fix, pay to have my ceiling fixed, and pay for my lawyers fees and court cost also!! I have had enough!!!
Good morning Mrs. Dougan,
I understand your frustration and concerns regarding your most recent experience to have the duct work repaired. Also, I am aware that the ongoing issue has escalated and caused secondary damage to the wood floors. I would be glad to speak with you and reach s resolution.

This company is the best when it comes to taking your money. But when it comes to customer service? GOOD LUCK! I contacted them yesterday because my basement was flooding. More than 24 hours later, I'm told they'll try to be here TOMORROW. They contract with an out of town company. We live in a city. Why can't they use companies locally if it takes that long? You want to contact customer service? You're screwed. Over an hour hold to speak to someone and even then they don't do anything to help. There isn't an email address. There isn't online chat. They take your money, but what do they do with it? Nothing to help you. This place is awful. They've done this to me too many times. Time to find a company that actually does something to help.
Updated on 10/16/2018: I called AHS again last night because my account look like it was being charged for a service call that never happened because after my basement was flooding, and we spoke with the people they contract with, they still told us it wouldn't be until the next day. In the meantime, my basement is flooded. We had to call someone else. So I'm paying out of pocket for another provider after AHS is taking my money every month. I checked my account and saw that it was being charged anyway.
I waited on hold for an hour AGAIN to speak to someone. I was told that voice recognition said I canceled the call? Never did. I asked if there was ever a time you don't have to wait on hold for an hour. I was told 1:00 AM. "I'm sorry, 1:00 AM?! Really?" I was told there was a chat line. Nope. I tried numerous devices on different internet connections and while there's the button, it never worked.
The customer service person told me that I'm obviously finding benefit to this service since I've had it for 12 years. Then it dawned on me. I haven't found any benefit. I need to stop paying them so much money for them to not do anything. They take the money, but they don't help. So I asked her also, "Since my basement is flooded and now there's damage and it was made worse waiting for you, what now." "Call homeowners insurance." Nice. So you know my basement is flooding. I'm told 2 day wait. Of course I don't wait that long because who would? And now in addition to the monthly premium for AHS my insurance would have to go up? What can she help me with she asks. "What CAN you help me with," I ask. She said there isn't anything she can do. So, WHY ASK? If you can't help, you can only take my money and give attitude, why ask. HORRIBLE SERVICE.
Good afternoon Ms. Day,
I understand your frustration regarding the delay in service for a technician to diagnose the issue causing the flood as well as the service fee. I would be glad to speak with you and assist with a resolution.

Recently, I had some dishwasher issues and American Home Shield was able to have somebody come out to diagnose the issue and order the parts. We're waiting for the parts to come in and when they do, it will get fixed. The tech that came was a nice guy. However, it seems like sometimes, it takes a while to get things done. When something like a washer, dryer or dishwasher breaks, you wanna have it fixed the next day. The techs get out here as quickly as they can, but it's never as quickly as you think it should be. Still, most of the contractors that we have experienced working with have been knowledgeable and professional.
I feel better and more comfortable knowing that if my heating system breaks, it's not gonna cost me an arm and a leg to get it fixed. It's important, especially when you have a home where things are getting older and companies don’t make things as good as they used to anymore. We've had a couple of things like dishwashers, clothes dryers and other appliances that have broken and it's nice to know that we can get them replaced with quality appliances and it's taken care of in a relatively quick manner. It's a $100 deductible rather than going out and spending $1,500 to $1,800 for a new appliance.

My washing machine was making all kinds of noises, so I called American Home Shield. Their contractor examined it and reported back to American Home Shield what was going on. AHS made the decision to replace it but I didn't want to. Then, Sears was supposed to call me to let me know when they were gonna deliver but hey never did. I got a call at 8 o'clock one morning, telling me that they were on their way to deliver the washing machine. That time, I was not at my place and it was only my son and daughter-in-law who happened to be around. I would have made an arrangement but then my son had to do it. Also, Sears said that they couldn't install the washing machine because my pipes are rusted. They put WD-40 and they were able to get one off and then another but then they told me that they would come back and install it within 30 days which is ludicrous.
I had to call for another plumber to come out and had to pay for him again. The 2nd plumber was on time and very courteous though. He took a look and the issue didn't even seem to be a big deal. He replaced the pipes and installed the washing machine. He finished the job in 20 minutes. I dealt with them before on air conditioning and they've been one of the few that have been consistent and does what they're supposed to do.
I've had others that I don't care for though and AHS could do little better with vendor management. There have been times when I've had to wait forever for service from somebody even if they contacted me within 48 hours, which is too long if it was serious. Sometimes, I have to schedule a way out which is not good. When I get somebody good, the next thing I know, they're gone. For example, the Mousley Plumbers were very good and that's who I thought was coming because I live in the area but they were no longer with AHS.
Also, American Home Shield’s rates are high. Now that they would have to replace my washing machine, I’m expecting them to increase my monthly payment, which is what they did last time. This is really messed up because I know everybody is in this business to make money but when you consider my payments every month, having something replaced once every five years is not unreasonable.

I also used AHS for my AC unit and the contractor that they sent out was also great and very professional. My AC unit lasted a week after the repair, and then the connectors let go, so we reopened the claim. I looked at the unit and saw loose connections, so we just tightened it up, which the contractor wouldn't have known. But it was no issue.
American Home Shield has been phenomenal from the get-go and I have recommended them to everybody. But I wish that they would look more into the generator service contract. I’m a generator tech by trade, and if you break a very large part in them, you’d pocket several thousand dollars to do replacement. So, to have something like that covered would be beneficial for a homeowner as well.

I also didn’t know whether he was gonna get more money out of me and I thought that was what I paid American Home Shield for. I was in the backyard and he walked out without me even knowing. So, American Home Shield sent another technician out who fixed the problem perfectly.
One service before that, a contractor came out to fix the washing machine and he broke my door. I have brand new doors through the entire house and I just had the door put on in July. He broke the door for the washing machine so I brought it back over to American Home Shield. I told them that they sent the contractor to my house and he broke the door, but they said that it was not their responsibility. The contractor denied that he did but nobody else did it, so I ended up replacing the door myself. American Home Shield needs to take responsibility for the contractors. If they come out and break something in someone’s home, then American Home Shield needs to cover that because they sent the contractors there to do the work. Other than that, I haven't had a really bad experience.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with American Home Shield. Appliances break all the time and I've used them at least six times this year for plumbing issues on pipes and leaks. If I have to call a plumber, it's gonna cost me a lot of money. Also, they're usually very timely. I've recommended somebody to get them before and I'll recommend them still.

I paid $600 for the washer and $600 for the dryer and it took about four weeks to finally get it to where we could use it again. Sears would send one person out and they would order a part, which would come in. Somebody else would come to the house, say we don’t need that part and order another one.
There were all these back and forth and it was inconvenient and a little ridiculous. I wish AHS would just replace the item if it wasn't going to be fixed in a timely manner. On a different note, a really good rep came out to fix my microwave. I called AHS and the process was all automated. I would rather talk to a person, but there wasn’t an option to talk to somebody. Our fridge stopped working. At first, I called Sears but then they said I had to call American Home Shield so I went online to resubmit the claim. When I did, AHS' website wasn’t working. I tried several times online and it just kept coming up with an error every time I did it. They should make sure that the website works so that you don’t need to sit on the phone at all. If you have a case open and you want to get the tech to come out again because the issue isn’t fixed, instead of coming up with an error message, it would be nice if the website actually worked.
Eventually, I had to call to submit it. I waited for an hour on hold. A rep answered and said, “Just hold a second. We’ll get you an appointment.” Then the line went dead and I had to go through the whole thing again. It was another hour and when they went offline, they didn’t finish doing whatever they needed to do. In the end, I spent over two hours on the phone. There should have been a way that even if they hung up on me, they would call me back.
American Home Shield sent a contractor out who determined that the issue was the compressor. Thereafter, he ordered the compressor. However, by the time he got the part in and returned to install it, he said the fridge was working well enough and he didn’t wanna put the part in. The fridge ran for another few weeks and stopped working again. The tech had to order parts twice because he figured the problem was one thing, and then he changed his mind and figured it was a different thing. In the end, it was only the fan that was replaced. Still, the tech was nice, friendly, and knowledgeable.
We first called at the end of July and we just got the fridge fixed last Friday. It was frustrating that it took so long when calls were entered to get them out, and then there was the waiting for parts. All my other experiences have been better than that. Even so, I would recommend the warranty to an old person who isn’t able to do much themselves and doesn’t have anybody else who would come in and help them. However, for myself and the $75 call out, I could’ve fixed pretty much all of the issues that I had them deal with. The fridge would’ve been fixed in days rather than months.

We finally made the decision to go ahead and repair it, and we got with the same company that American Home Shield sent out and they got the repairs done. So, everything worked out good. Arctic Air had a little difficulty getting one part, but they've always been very attentive and responsive. The receptionist Melanie has always been incredibly nice in letting us know if there's any delay. Every time that we submit to American Home Shield and they send Arctic Air, we know it will be taken care of. I would highly recommend AHS. We just sold our home on Tuesday and I made sure to pass on that they should keep our policy intact just the way it is because it's been wonderful and a life saver.

With American Home Shield, you get good quality for the money that you spend. When the washing machine quit working, I submitted the claim online. It’s faster and I don’t have to wait for them to be in the office. I had no problem at all doing that and it was a good experience. The contractor that was sent out was also excellent. They did what they said they would do.

We had a really crummy company before American Home Shield and we went with this company because we had gotten a good reference from a contractor. When a company takes care of the contractors out there, I feel like they're gonna take care of everybody else. After I logged in and placed a claim for our dishwasher online with American Home Shield, I called the guy the next day to make sure that he had the work order. Although that has not happened with American Home Shield, that had happened before with other companies. He said yes and that he would call me later that day to schedule.
He ended up coming out last Friday, figured out what the problem was, ordered the parts, said he thought they’d be in Wednesday and if so, he would be back Wednesday. Our dishwasher hadn’t been draining at the end of the cycle and was leaving funky water in there. He came out yesterday morning and got it fixed. We don’t like washing dishes by hand if we can avoid it. So it makes life a lot better.

Updated on 05/28/2019: Issue still unresolved. Still receiving the usual runaround. I have spoke with customer service multiple times and was told again that it would be resolved. Still waiting.
Original Review: We’re up in the mountains and we had some ductwork issues. The heat wasn’t coming up on the second floor of the house. So, I checked with American Home Shield whether they covered it. They said they did and so we started the ball rolling in February. They sent out a contractor who was professional, came out as a workman, looked at everything, and then he submitted his report. From my standpoint, American Home Shield thought he was either too expensive or they didn’t like what he wanted to do. They said they were getting a second opinion.
So they got a second opinion. We played phone tag with those guys for three months trying to get them out here. That didn’t happen. Then, they went to another guy and I wouldn’t let this guy come to my house without me being there. He showed up in his regular truck with a flat tire. And he went under, and looked at what he said needed to be done. For about four to five months, I still didn’t hear anything. Then I got a message saying I need to pay $75 for a fee. That was fine with me but the guy never came. I asked American Home Shield what happened and they said they closed it out. I told them that no one called me to tell me what was happening.
They transferred me to supervisors. They kept giving me the runaround. The work has still not been completed and we’re going on seven months of trying to get this thing handled. So I asked them if we could just go back to the original guy because he was professional and showed up when he was supposed to. He gave me a report of what needs to be done but he just stopped returning my phone calls.
Then the guy who was supposed to come hasn't shown up four to five different times. It has been a total nightmare. I’ve used American Home Shield for the water heater and it was fantastic. They got it fixed. They sign people up to buy these warranties and then depending on what needs to be fixed, they decide whether they’re gonna do it and they just shop around to find the cheapest guy to do the work.
Good afternoon Mr. Tidwell,
I understand your frustration and concerns regarding your ongoing experience to have your furnace repaired. I would be glad to speak with you and get the issues resolved through your American Home Shield warranty.

I had a problem with my A/C system, so AHS sent a company out in August. The technician said his company did not deal with the duct system and it was a leakage in the duct system causing the problem. I entered another work order for the duct system. AHS called me to say that I should not have entered a new order (which costs $75), but should have transferred the old order to a new company. The rep canceled the new work order and said they would contact the first company, get the diagnosis and then transfer it. I waited and then called to make sure it was done. I was told that the new company would call.
4 weeks went by and no call. I called AHS and the representative said it was my fault that I did not call to check on things sooner! They said someone would call. They would check back with me before their shift ended to be sure there was follow up this time. Sounded good. But the contractor never called... and neither did the rep. So 3 days later I called again and was told the work order had been canceled! After putting me on hold to check on it, I was cut off!!! So, I called again and was told the same. Now, they STILL have to contact the company that came in August to find see what the issue was, and THEN they have to call a new company to fix it. I filed the request in August. It is now October 14 and it has not been resolved. This time, I recorded the conversation so that I'll won't have to go through it all again. This is the most frustrating repair I've ever had done.

I had had a contract with AHS for two years and was largely happy with it, until my automatic payment was increased with no notification or request. When I contacted the toll-free number I encountered several representatives whose accents were so thick as to make it very hard to communicate and decipher what they were saying.
When asked why I was not asked or informed about the rate increase. I was told I would be transferred to escalations - instead, they dropped my call. After calling back, I was told they were not allowed to transfer me, at which point I requested a supervisor. As I was being transferred, I heard the rep mocking me and then I was placed on hold for 10 minutes. I am frustrated with the poor customer service more than the increase in rates and will be canceling my account.

AHS resolved my complaint. After allowing me to get a 2nd plumbers opinion, the leak was found and fixed. I provided an AHS representative with the invoice and a photo. After discussing it, AHS is reimbursing me what I paid to have the pipe fixed. I am giving a 4-star waiting because AHS was proactive in contacting me after my review and worked with me to fix my issue and cover the plumbing issue. I deducted one star because their preferred contractor was horrible and caused the issue to be more than what it should have been.
Original Review: Oct. 14, 2018
I purchased a home in March of 2018 and requested a home warranty because it is an older home. They purchased the ShieldPlus which covers systems. This month (October) after getting a new AC installed, I was informed by the technician that I had water in my crawl space. Nothing was noted in the home inspection regarding pipes, etc. I paid the $75.00 service fee and a plumber came out. First - I am very displeased with the contractor. They sent someone who my wife said looked very young and 'stoned' out of his mind. He was there for only a short time and said the galvanized pipes were rusted and needed to be replaced. For about 3-4 days my account said "authorization under review". I never heard from AHS.
I had to call repeatedly and I got slightly different answers each time. But in sum, because the pipes will need "modifications" they aren't covered. So I will be calling a new plumber (their contractor is worthless; no weekend hours and never has a manager - just office staff - to speak to) and finding out a second opinion and getting my issue resolved. Needless to say, the "devil is in the details" - while my contract supposedly covers plumbing - it doesn't. Needless to say, I will not renew with this company, they will find a way for them not to cover your repairs. Save yourself time and aggravation - don't buy their warranties. Oh, and they were quite happy to take and keep my $75.00. Buyer beware!

I have called AHS twice this year. Once for a pool repair and this last week for a plumbing stoppage. In both cases the contractor came up with reasons why they were not covered. The pool they had an ok reason, my tenant may have been the reason. For the Plumbing stoppage, Loyalty Home Services came out. A terrible company. I have checked their reviews on other sites since they came out and they are not good. I don't know why AHS uses them, they must be really cheap.
Anyways, Loyalty came out. Said I have a lateral line clog and he needed to leave and get a long snake and he would be back later. To access the clog he would to get on the roof. I showed him the ground level clean outs next to the house, but he didn't want to use those. Well 10 minutes after he left I got a call from AHS saying that roof access was not allowed per the contract and I was on my own. I asked to be transferred to someone else. I was on hold for 5 minutes and then was disconnected.
I called back and after being on hold for 30 minutes, I spoke to CS rep and recall was started. Since the roof was a no go I asked them to snake the ground level main cleanouts by the house and or toilets. The recall was started and I was told to call back Loyalty Home and reschedule. I called them and spoke to very angry supervisor that attempted to intimidate me with an angry tone and plumbing terms I didn't really know. He stated that he was a plumber for 14 years and if says it's a lateral line clog it has to be lateral line clog and using the main line house cleanouts would be preventive and they don't do preventive. And he or AHS canceled the recall without coming out.
So I called a real plumbing company, they came out and spent 20 minutes diagnosing the problem. The guy from AHS spent about 3 minutes and left. The real plumber said I had a clog in the main line. He could easily snake it thru the ground level main line clean out next to the house. I asked him about the lateral line clog the other plumber said. He seemed puzzled, looked at the roof and said, "You mean the vent." He stated, "Well it is possible to snake the line thru the vent, there was no reason to when there were clean outs available". He also thought it was strange for any plumber to want to get on the roof and snake a vent when cleanouts were available and a far better choice. According to Loyalty Home Services online reviews they have made up excuses to get out of work before.
I called AHS back again. Was on hold for 40 minutes before someone picked up. I was then transferred to a supervisor. I was on hold only 10 minutes this time. The supervisor said I could pay another $100 for a second AHS plumber to come out and give a 2nd opinion. If the 2nd plumber agreed with the 1st, I would pay $200 for nothing. If the 2nd plumber disagreed it was free. The real plumber would have charged me $208 to fix it in the first place. I decided to gamble and asked for the 2nd opinion. The next day I had a window from 11am to 5pm. At 4pm I called to see when they would be there. I was told that AHS had canceled the appointment. The plumbing company said they were supposed to let me know. No one informed me, so, I had been waiting all day for no one to show up, thanks AHS.
So I called AHS, was on hold for 55 minutes until I could speak to someone. I asked who canceled the appointment. They said someone in the Authorization department that is a high-level supervisor. Again I asked why and they told me roof cleanouts were not allowed. I asked again about using the ground level cleanouts. I was told that I didn't have them. I walked over. I touched one of them and told her that I had my hand on one right then. She told me that she knew it didn't make any sense but since their tech said I didn't have any, then I must not have any. I asked her if I could send a picture of them to her via a email. She said she didn't have email at work.
It took several minutes of pleading before she gave me an email address for the authorization department that I could send pictures of my cleanouts to. Update, I sent them a couple of days ago and still haven't heard back from them. I called today and was transfer from one CS rep to another, then to the authorization dept. I asked if I could record the conversation, she said no. I asked if they had got my pictures. They had no idea if they had received them or not. They also told me that I didn't have ground level cleanouts, I assured her that I did and asked if I could resend the pictures to her so I would know that someone got them.
She also doesn't have a work email address where she can receive pictures. I also found out that my claim had been closed. She did forward our conversation to the denial dept. and told them that I had emailed pictures. I was also told that they take a few days to respond and am waiting to hear back with a house with no plumbing drainage. I also asked about the process for arbitration. AHS has a clause that doesn't allow you to sue them, I wonder why they are so concerned about that. You have to go to arbitration. I asked her about the process and she repeated the phone number from memory. Not a good sign.
So at this point, I should have never called AHS and paid their $100 service fee when I could have hired a real plumber for $208 and would be able to flush my toilet. I have had AHS for a couple of years, only called them a few times. So far 2 out 3 calls have gone bad. AHS has good coverage on paper but their contractors will find or make up a reason to get out of doing any real work. If you get assigned a contractor look up their reviews online first. Don't let them assign a sub-par contractor to you and because they will make this process a nightmare. AHS doesn't seem to have any process to correct their contractor's mistakes.

They keep sending service people that never actually fix anything and that write up false reports so that they do not have to cover your damaged appliance. She also lied to my husband and said she had already cleaned the drain in the fridge yet her notes say that she needed to come back to clean the drain and the condenser. She did neither.

My husband submitted a claim with American Home Shield for our refrigerator. He's usually the one who submits the claims and he starts the process online and then AHS would call back. Setting everything up and getting someone out here to do the work have been easy. The company came out after two weeks. They had to order the parts which took a week and then it took another two weeks to get an appointment. We were five weeks without a refrigerator but the company was great. It’s the first time that the refrigerator supposedly now has been fixed.
So far, American Home Shield has done everything that we needed done. I've been happy with their response and everything that they’ve done. It’s not their fault that the claim took so long. It’s where we live and how long it takes to get someone to come out. Also, I'm surprised that they're still fixing the refrigerator. In four years, they've sent a company out for it 12 times. But everything is new now and hopefully this is the last time that it has to be repaired.

The ice maker was frozen, so it wasn’t making ice. I submitted a claim online with AHS and their website was very easy to use. The contractor was very nice, friendly, and helpful. He ascertained what the issue was within 30 minutes then he was able to get out of there. And he ordered the parts, then the parts came in two weeks later. It would’ve been nice to have some ice earlier because at that time, I had a 10-month old kid and she was teething. But they got it fixed. After the part came in, the tech came again, got everything set up, and finished within another half an hour and 45 minutes.
Also, I was able to get myself a different ice machine that I would not have been able to convince my wife to let me get without the problem we had. So now, I have a machine that makes hospital ice, so things worked out in my favor. Since the repair, the ice maker has been frozen at the right stage of the game. It was a good experience and less of a hassle that I’ve experienced with ABC Home in the past.

I had a big argument with them about why they were lying. I got mad and called AHS to tell them I didn't want those guys anymore.
I wasn’t very happy about the way AHS handled the second contractor. When we told them what kind of people were the first contractors, they didn’t want to believe it. They said they would be sending me a second contractor but I have to pay another $100. I said I wouldn't but they sent another contractor and this guy was really honest and was really efficient. I tried to submit the claim to American Home Shield over the phone, but they didn’t give a chance to add one more piece of equipment through the automated system, so I canceled it. I went online, filed the claim there, and I was contacted by phone. From then on, I contacted them by phone and everything seemed to be okay. At first, Prolite Appliance Service & Repair came out and the tech who arrived was positive and friendly. He did his job and didn't sit around and doddle. But then, my appliances were very old and they couldn't repair them. He said he would have to take information first, send that info to AHS and then they would contact us. What I have is a '60s home and it was difficult to find the appliances that would fit within the area. That took them a while.
We were contacted by phone and they recommended certain things. The existing oven was self-cleaning, but the oven that they recommended was not a self-cleaning one, so I called back and they quickly added on the self-clean one. It just took a little while to get the appliances in because they were from two different areas and one of them took longer than the other. Eventually, they replaced the broken appliances and that was done well. I’ve bought homes before, but it was the first time I've used the warranty, and I was pleased. I got things done in a timely manner and I was surprised at how nice everything was.

My dishwasher wasn’t working. It wasn’t turning on at all. The lights would go on and then it would shut off. The contractor that they sent out was absolutely fantastic. I felt very comfortable with him. He was really respectful of the house and he was really getting to the bottom of the issue. He was thinking two steps ahead because it wasn’t necessarily clear what the problem was but what he did completely fixed the problem. It turned out to be the circuit board and they ended up replacing it. They had to order the part and he had it in a week. He was a really good guy. I would have him out any time. He was on time and I was surprised at how quickly the part came in and he got back out to put it in.
I just had one boo-boo where it's a new home to me so I thought my ceiling fan light wasn’t working and it turned out that the switch was just in a very weird place. So, I ended up pulling 75 bucks to have the guy turn the switch for me. I'm a little concerned how much I'm gonna pay next year. Hopefully, I won't have any other appliance issues. It's already pricey enough and I get a little bit worried that every time I make a call that they're gonna up my price next time. So far, for what I paid, I could have paid out-of-pocket and probably come up less than what I paid for the insurance. Especially when I pay $75 each time and then I pay almost $600 a year for the insurance, it makes me think twice about buying it again. And, my appliances are new so I thought of waiting and doing it again in five years. Nevertheless, I was glad I had it with the dishwasher, but again, I probably would have paid less to just do it.
They might be able to make more money if there’d be one price for appliances that are five years old or less and then another price for five to ten years. It would be worth for appliances that are 15-20 years old and I pay 600 bucks to cover it. Overall, the price is the only thing that’s a negative for me. Otherwise, the response and the service are really good.

The online site is very user-friendly and self-explanatory. The contractor American Home Shield sent out was awesome too. I had used them months before and I couldn’t have asked for some better techs. I was impressed with their professionalism and knowledge.
The first time they came was for the main shut-off valve. It had been leaking. They just tightened a bolt on it and that fixed it temporarily. But then it started leaking again. They came the second time and actually fixed it. It wasn't their fault as to why the issue came back and since then, we haven’t had any issues. I recommend American Home Shield to everybody. My wife sent a claim online to American Home Shield, and the contractors were great. When we had an issue with our heater in the winter, they also sent out a great contractor.
We've been happiest with the contractors that they've used. Their contractors were very, very accommodating. American Home Shield is a big company, so you are like dealing with a machine. We file a claim and within 24 to 48 hours, we get a call from the contractor. I really liked that once we filed a claim, we're dealing with the contractor, not American Home Shield. The contractors are negotiating on our behalf. So that makes the process a lot bigger versus calling a 1-800 number and getting passed around.

I’ve only had my contract with American Home Shield about four years and I've been really happy. In those four years, they've replaced the refrigerator upstairs, my dishwasher and the stove downstairs. They've also rebuilt the dryer in that they replaced a lot of parts in it. It's been well worth it for me. I usually make claims over the phone and it's not difficult at all. The contractor for the stove was excellent. They checked the stove and agreed with my diagnosis that it was the thermostat in the oven part. They found out that the part wasn't being made anymore so AHS replaced the stove with a brand new one. It took three weeks because they freighted the oven out and then it was another week for a service person to get out here and hook everything up for me. The new stove has been working fantastic.
The only thing I don’t understand with American Home Shield is why they did not cover an upright freezer. The only answer I’ve gotten has been that it's so cheap anyway. But when you look at it, they’re not cheap. It's still $300 or $400 which I just don’t have lying around. I’ve been surprised that it is not covered, and I pay for the deluxe package every year ‘cause that’s how pleased I’ve been with AHS. Still, I recommend them to anybody I talk to.
