First summer in this approx 15 yo home. A/C compressor stopped working on 5/26/19 -- Memorial Day weekend. Made our first call to AHS since buying the home last August. Paid AHS $75 to have a service technician diagnose the problem. He was here on 6/6/19 and recommended the compressor -- manufactured in 2005 -- be replaced. Said he would talk with AHS and be back in touch. Rec'd an e-mail today (6/13) from AHS that a new service contractor has been assigned to us.
When I called to ask if this second contractor was going to install a new compressor, I was told this second contractor would first need to diagnose the problem. As if the first service call by an AHS contractor hadn't occurred. This doesn't feel like service to me, it feels like delay, delay, delay so AHS doesn't have to perform under the warranty. It's a 2005 compressor and stopped work. So, it's obviously at its end of life and should be replaced. We have a warranty. What's the point of a warranty if it doesn't cover issues this one? Oh, and I am regularly receiving e-mails from AHS that it's time to renew our warranty.
K L,
I hate to hear that you were not satisfied with the service received with AHS. I have sent a private message to you in an effort to get more information to assist you further. I look forward to hearing from you.

It was very easy to submit a claim with American Home Shield. I just got online and submitted the claim and someone called me back and scheduled the service for my AC. When the contractor came out, I was not there but my Realtor met them. I communicated with the contractor via text and he was responsive. It was all good. Everything was fixed and the AC seems to be working fine.
Good morning Kim,
Your feedback is greatly appreciated in regard to your most recent American Home Shield experience. We are glad to hear about the contractor that serviced your air conditioner system.

AHS sent a plumber to my home for a pipe leak ... did not fix leak, only made hole all up my wall cutting out drywall. Did not fix. Left mess. Then guy they sent said, “I got go thru your cabinet to get to pipe,” and I have call AHS to see if they cover main hours to do work. Still leaking pipes. I get call From AHS saying the plumber said he had to go thru cabinet and they don't cover that in the warranty cutting thru wood so I can call plumber, see what they charge me out pocket to pay myself. So no this warranty has not work for me. Waiting on a call to get a second opinion ‘cause the pipe is not in the cabinet. It drywall to cut that already has been damage by guy they sent. Horrible experience. Contract did not work. I still have a leak waiting on a call to get second opinion from another plumbing company. This guy sent just put holes in my wall -- left I still have leak.

Garage door repair person was sent out - the Spring was not covered under their warranty so in addition to paying $125 to generate a work order with American Home Shield, I also had to pay $535 to the Repairman to repair my garage door. What did I get for $125? Ace's Garage door repair does free estimates so I didn't get anything for the $125 paid to the Warranty company and I'm having a hard time trying to get refunded. I've spoken to 7 people in Customer Service - The calls are routed overseas and they spend 15 mins doing verification and repeating every word that you say. It is very annoying dealing with these robot people that do not use common sense.

I have the combo plan where I pay $75 per technician visit. A/C was not working when I turned it on this season. Called AHS and they sent out CWS Mechanical from Commerce, GA. I paid AHS $75. When the company came, there were two people. (Apparently, one to divert attention and one to act like he was doing something. But I was too smart for that.) 1st thing, CWS MECHANICAL asked me to pay them $1300 for a line set and freon. After hooking something to my less than 5-year-old unit, they said it had zero freon. Funny, it worked the 3 previous seasons just fine. They said it had a slow leak. If they were no refrigerant (not Freon, but 410A Puron), how could they determine a slow leak?? Then they said they knew it was the line set, but they did not have the proper tools to test the lineset.
However, they gave me an invoice that read $480 for freon and $650 for line set (the line set they could not properly check). So, I got charged $75 for someone to come out but they could not check my system because they did not have the appropriate tools. They said they filled the system with nitrogen and not to turn it on because of that. I immediately called the AHS warranty company to inform them they were asking for money. During their visit, they were able to completely view what is covered and what is not covered. Funny, those two items are not covered. They said they would come back at the end of this week to check the pressure and lineset because they had another unit to install in my area. They said I would not be charged for them to return.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, the next day, the American Home Shield company called me and left a recorded message that the CWS people needed "access" to check the lineset and that would be another $200. What they did not know was that I called a reputable A/C person in the community that I knew would be honest (even though he is on the pricey side). The visit was $85. When he came out, he checked everything and said Goodman was notorious for coils going out and said it had to be the coil, which is under warranty. I showed him the paperwork and he said the price they are charging for refrigerant (Puron, not Freon) was way high and mind you, this is coming from a high-price HVAC company. I was floored. I informed him of all that I had been told and he flat out said both companies were trying to scam me for money.
He is replacing the coil under warranty and charging me $200 less for the refrigerant. Also, he noted while he was here that I had holes in the venting that causes carbon monoxide to come into my home. The other warranty-based people did not even mention that. The part was so inexpensive that there would not have been any reason not to inform of this (other than they were both scamming me). I will be calling my bank to reverse the charge and I plan to be cancelling this warranty and reporting these people to the Better Business Bureau. I plan to sue the CWS Mechanical in court for fraud. I will also take other measures to report the licensing of these people. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT USE AMERICAN HOME SHIELD OR CWS MECHANICAL (COMMERCE).
I certainly hate to hear that you have received less than satisfactory service. I will follow up with you as soon as possible in an effort to assist with unresolved issues. Thanks for your patience.

Every now and then, I have a hard time submitting a claim. Last week, I had a couple of issues getting online. I could log in but it wouldn't let me request service. I just called the 1800 number. The representatives are very nice and helpful. All of the contractors American Home Shield has sent have been good as well. A while ago, the lighting in the basement was not working and we were afraid that there was faulty wiring. But there was not and Professional Design Systems did fix what was needed. My only complaint is with the plumber last week. I was hoping for him to check the toilet thoroughly but he just went, "Oh, it's this thing." He wouldn't give me any help with further plans. I also wanted a receipt but he doesn't do any of that. I wish the contractors would just give me a receipt but they don't. Other than that, everything has been great so far. I have even recommended American Home Shield to my parents.

When we call American Home Shield to file a claim, it’s impossible to get them, and when we get them, the people are generally abrupt. I asked in certain instances to use vendors that we've used before and they didn't do it. When you call back after you find out that they didn't book it the right way, it's a pain in the butt. They would tell us that we would hear from the contractors within a certain amount of time but I've never had a problem with the contractors getting back to us because as soon as AHS gives me the information on who it is, I call them. Most of the people who came out were friendly but they were all similarly mentally situated that you can't do much because AHS wouldn't approve stuff and they're always chasing parts.
We had a toilet downstairs that was plugged up and recently, we had the timer in the pool replaced by American Home Shield. We had the water heater fixed too because there was a leak in one of the feed pipes. A copper pipe perforated and the contractor came out when they said they would be here and fixed it. Everything is a battle with American Home Shield and nothing has been easy over the years. It came when we bought the house and we've been with them for a decade. When something goes wrong, you gotta call American Home Shield and it's like going to the dentist. I wouldn’t recommend it.

When I made a claim with American Home Shield, I understood the reason I needed to call versus doing it online. We had a company out in the past that was unable to perform the services so consequently, I wanted the company that I would get - through American Home Shield - that I had used in the past. There was no problem in connecting us with the air conditioning company I was happy with in the past. The technician was excellent. Someone had to come back out for a final resolution and that took three days. We almost have a resolution in the sense that we are waiting for the inside unit to be ordered then installed. We are not quite there yet, but we are moving on.
I would recommend American Home Shield with a caveat. Their main company is in Columbia, South Carolina and they do work in Charleston, South Carolina with a Charleston telephone number. They never answer the Charleston telephone and on their recording, they don’t say that they are having problems with their phone system in Charleston. It took a day or so to figure out I needed to call Columbia. When I did, somebody answered the phone and I got a resolution. I was able to talk to someone named Laura who was as fantastic.
American Home Shield could do a much better job when they are having evidently long term phone problems in Charleston. I was kinda left with leaving a message and no one called back because they said the phone system was not working correctly. There was frustration there that probably wouldn’t need to be if they would have gone the extra step of letting their customers know. If the phone system doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. You get problems, you gotta try to fix it. But at least on your recording, you could make your customers aware about calling the Columbia number rather than just floundering around. Otherwise, everything else is fine.
Connie,
Thanks for letting us know how everything is going so far. Taking care of our customers is the main goal here at AHS. I am glad that you were happy with the work done. We look forward to servicing you in the future as needed. Enjoy your day.

I call my claims in with American Home Shield and that's pretty easy. When I had an AC issue, somebody was supposed to come but no one did. He never did what he said he would do. We were without services for a little over a month. But the second person that was scheduled to come was very nice. He was the best service person that was ever out to our home.
American Home Shield should send somebody out in a timely fashion because it took a little bit for this last person to come for the service call. Other than that, they always have been knowledgeable, polite, and professional. Through the years, we’ve mostly been really satisfied with all of our contractors. But the one that was out of St. Louis was a little bit slow about coming out. Also, the contractors that we had seemed to just want to keep putting a Band-Aid on the problem because every so often, they would come out.

But the contractors that American Home Shield have sent out were always very understanding, and they did their job very fast which is always good.

My sump pump was backing up and so I filed a claim with American Home Shield. It was two different claims. The first one, I spoke to somebody. The issue wasn't resolved. And the second claim, I did it on my own on the computer. The same contractor came both times. He was fine and the service was good. He said he fixed the valve. And I haven't had any water back-ups since then. My whole basement would have flooded if I didn't get it done. It was a great experience. I'll always recommend American Home Shield. I found it very valuable.

The contractors that American Home Shield sends out usually come during the day when I'm at work and they have been able to do the work without me being there. I submitted a claim for the garbage disposal online and it's perfect now. I also spoke to a representative once but that experience was negative. My rate went from $40 to $50 so I called to complain. It went up $10 and in 12 months, that's $120.

We had American Home Shield years ago. We got them when we purchased the house, and the previous owner had purchased it for a year as a security blanket for us. We had such a good experience with them back then. We kept them for six years until we moved to a condo and didn't really need a policy anymore. And we just bought a new place last year, and I thought, “Oh, I’ve had such a good experience with them. I’ll go with them again,” and I regret it. The very first claim that I filed five months after we moved in was on my air conditioner. And it took three attempts and they could not work on the system because we’re in a condo and it’s a system they didn't know what to do with.
They charged me the $75 three times. I had to fight about that for six months, and then I still got a bill. They told me they were gonna send it to collections, and I didn't even owe the money to begin with. And then after the three attempts and they still couldn't find any, they let me go out on my own. I paid for it upfront, which I agreed to do, but then it took me almost four months to get my money back.
I just filed a service request two weeks ago, and they sent it to a vendor. The vendor said they don’t work on my type of system again, and they just dropped it. They didn't even attempt to find another one. And so, when I called to follow up on why no one has called me a week later, they said it wasn’t a rush. It’s just not cooling. It could be up to 48 hours. I was not sweating, so I’d just be patient. But after a week and a half, no one called me, so I called. And they said the request was cancelled. When I asked who did, they said it was the vendor because they don’t work on our system. I then said, “A vendor can’t cancel my service request. I’m your client. If they don’t work on it, then it’s up to you to find someone else.”
I tried to go above the customer service person to say, “I went through this last year. Why can’t we just have a note on my file that says that this gentleman, this Metro-Mechanical that was able work on that, why can’t that be the preferred vendor? Because they agreed that they would work with American Home Shield on it." But I was told that that’s not how they do it. And so here I am, three weeks later, finally getting my air conditioner serviced. I haven't got any call saying they're on their way yet. I will not be renewing with American Shield. It expires next month, and I really hate that because I’m on a very fixed income, and so it’s nice to have the security blanket. But I’ll be finding another policy to purchase.

There was a leak in one of the gasket in the tank of one of the toilet. I filed the claim online and American Home Shield text messaged me that BB Lewis Plumbing would contact me 24 hours. The guy scheduled an appointment and he called me. He came, explained things and he made the gasket sealed tightly so that it wouldn't leak. Before he left, he told me that if there would be any issue, call him back and he'd come back if need be. It was fixed and we had a great experience.
I had a bad experience about one sink claim which I never received any money for. It has been pending for over six months and I sent my bill to AHS. I called them three or four times and every time they tell me that somebody will get back to me and I got really frustrated. If they'll take care of that, it would be highly appreciated. That is a black mark on the company. Other than that, AHS has been good so I kept up with them. I am very happy with their service.

We had United Air Temp come out and check our air system in the spring and our heating system in the fall to assure that everything was okay. Plus, the only way that American Home Shield will cover it is if we had that checked. When we have a claim, we go online and put in what we need, and then they have somebody call and schedule a time. And then the contractor comes out and do whatever it is they have to do then charge us the fee, which is $75 now.
When we had United Air Temp come out one time, the guy forgot to plug something back in for air conditioning, so our it wasn’t working. And one time, when the technician came out for the winter check, he didn’t screw the thing that spins all the way in and it came loose and it sounded like my house was gonna explode because it was going circles and it was banging against the sides. So they came out and actually caused more damage than fixing things. There was also a time when the guy was very rude about whatever was going on with my washing machine. But that was at least 10 years ago. But overall, I intend to keep renewing with American Home Shield every year.

I had two completely separate issues that Grade A Plumbing worked on. The first one was a valve under the sink, and someone else had had a home warranty repair on it nine months ago, and apparently, it wasn’t repaired correctly. So, Grade A came out, diagnosed it, ordered the part, came back, and did a good job. They were on time, so I'm very happy. The second issue that they were also called out on four days later was a hot water heater issue. And they were late, but they came out, they diagnosed it, fixed it, and then, like a few hours later, all of a sudden, we had no hot water again. So, they came back out and fixed it. But I was a little disappointed in that my poor tenants had no hot water for six days. So, it felt to me like we should’ve been on the priority list on the callback out since they had come out and not fixed the problem the first time. But we had to wait another three days. They did a good job. But the timeframe was a little frustrating.
Most of my claims with American Home Shield are done online. On the hot water thing, I called them up and said, “Hey, isn’t there any way we can get them back out here right away? ‘Cause I’ve already waited four days to get it done first.” And they said there was nothing they could do. If they called out another company, it would take that much longer. Still, they’re very pleasant. I’ve had three houses that are under the plan, and a repair takes longer, especially on things like I had another claim where I had no refrigerator. One of my other tenant’s refrigerator was broken, and it took forever to get it fixed. And I ended up having to buy a refrigerator for them to use while we were waiting to get it fixed, which doesn't even make sense. So, the timing is a little bit too long. But otherwise, they do a good job.

They put my stuff through to Jordan’s Heating and Cooling. They called me right away, set up the time to come out, and the technician came out promptly. He found out it was a bad control board. The only part was waiting for the part to get in which took a couple of days. But luckily enough, it was cooler here. We didn’t need the air so it didn’t mess anything up. When the part came in, the technician was at my house installing it and everything went smoothly. Everything works fine now. The first time that Randall & Sons Plumbing came, there was a pump that wasn’t pumping liquid out, and they fixed that. That was probably 3 months ago and this last month, end of May, we tried to have them come out for some blockage between the pump going out to the septic tank. We had septic coming out in the yard. Water was blocking it so instead of the water filtering out to where the water and liquid goes out to, it was coming up the top of the septic tank itself. They said that they didn’t really deal with that type of issue so they didn’t come out. They didn’t think American Home Shield would cover septic issues which I was surprised at. I thought that would be covered. It was in the warranty. I just wish a little more clarification on septic issues and what the warranty covers or doesn’t cover so it wouldn’t lead to confusion in the beginning when calling in.
Randall & Sons was really good when they came out the first time but they were a little frustrated because they couldn’t get through to the office. It kinda slowed down getting help the first time because the technician was waiting down the phone for 45 minutes and couldn’t get someone to approve. Also, the problem I have sometimes is understanding some of the people that pick up the phone. I don’t know if there’s an accent or language barrier sometimes when I called in. I’ve been put on hold a couple times, too. But I’ve been glad to have American Home Shield. It has been a good decision to have that included in our home purchase. Submitting claims has been pretty good overall. The garage door opener was taken care of last year.

We had a short which was tripping a breaker. AHS sent an electrician who disconnect power to some lights attached to the outside of our house by the deck. AHS then stated they could not repair because the wiring was outside the foundation. I hired an electrician to repair. He identified the problem was not in the lights on the outside of the house, but was wiring inside the house. The electrician AHS sent created additional problems I had to pay to correct and the wiring that was the problem is covered under the contract, since it is not outside of the foundation. I will be sharing this with as many outlets as possible, as AHS is not honoring their contract and hiring poor service providers.

I have been with American Home Shield since 2012. Two service calls in the last year and they both were terrible. Today a contractor no-calls/no-shows after I took an entire day off from work to be here to have my AC repaired. Called them twice and left messages and got no response. Finally AHS was able to reach them and they said they had a schedule change due to an employee issue. How about call your customers and let them know? It's now costing me money to keep AHS because I don't get compensated for my time off from work and it wasted here.
In this day and age there is absolutely no excuse for not contacting your customers when you are delayed by text, by call, or by email. I had a service window of 8-5 which now means I could have went to work and still been home if they were going to be late and guess what it is now 5:30 and they still have not showed up. When we asked to speak to a AHS manager or supervisor no one was available and the person tried to avoid escalating the call but my husband was persistent. Totally unacceptable AHS and they offered me nothing as as consideration after they have received 7 years of on-time payments. And guess what? I get to sit and probably take another day off from work to get this repair done.
I'm beyond livid at the poor quality contracts that are being awarded to these lowest priced technically acceptable vendors. Customer service matters big time and you can not continue to take people's money like crooks and offer them nothing in return. While I am sure some people have had great experiences with AHS we have been the unlucky ones to receive the poorest of service. Just knowing that the technician is going to finally come out only to tell me my AC is broken, and then have to probably order parts, and then get approval from AHS before they can perform the work, and oh by the way temps are already approaching the 100s makes my blood boil. And there is no after hour or emergency service because we have been like this since Saturday and it's now Wednesday.
This CANNOT be an acceptable practice of this company. And I would hope if you are considering AHS you would think again as I am doing right now. They only show the 5-star reviews on their website but I am sure there are others like myself who have seen nothing but money thrown down the drain for this service. Why can't AHS pick competent vendors that can provide decent customer service? This service is not cheap and because of that it should work when I need it to.

Now that the water heater is not working, I can't get American Home Shield to understand that they should be the liaison between me and the contracted company. Numerous calls were made to customer service representatives that only are able to read a manuscript and then render nothing at all. 300 hours have been spent on the phone this far.

Our bottom floor AC was not working upon moving in. We waited a week to see if it was just a glitch and because we were busy unpacking. The more we unpacked downstairs the hotter it got. So I notified AHS and by the next day we had someone come out and the issue was resolved by a professional technician. Very much appreciated and a good thing to have as a first time home owner.

The online claims process of American Home Shield is painless. After I submitted the claim for my dishwasher, they contacted me the next business day and we scheduled another appointment for the contractor to come out at my convenience. The contractor was very polite and the first visit was really good. He diagnosed the problem, went outside, got on his phone, talked to another co-worker, came in and realized that he was incorrect. There was another part that needed to be ordered. He wrote it on his notes and left. When the part came in, he called me to reschedule the repair. The follow up was complete and everything had been working fine.

I'm happy with American Home Shield. When the drain had stopped up on the AC, so it was leaking badly, I wasn't able to fix it myself. I made a claim over the phone with American Home Shield, and my interaction with their rep was really good. We've had to do that three times and it's been good. They're good about getting things done, so I'm happy with it. The contractor did good, too. He was a really good guy. He came in here and disassembled some stuff and got it going. We didn't have a major problem, but we had a lot of water that was coming out into the carpet. And we had a lot of towels and fans, so it worked out okay.

The AC’s motor went out and it affected the whole upstairs. So, it needed to be fixed. Submitting the claim online to American Home Shield was easy and there was nothing to it. The contractors were both great. There was one who came out and looked at it, and another one who repaired it. They were very professional, courteous, on time and they did their job. Last year, my air conditioner stopped blowing and American Home Shield sent Fast Response Team out to look at it. So, Fast Response came out, and they told me that it had a leak that they fixed and that I had to pay for Freon, which they’ve charged me one thousand and somewhat dollars for. The guy told me what amount it held, but I would not know the difference. I paid it, and the air conditioner worked. We didn't turn it back on until this year. So, the first day I turned it on was Memorial Day weekend, and it did nothing. I waited and checked the fuses to make sure nothing triggered. I turned it on again and it came on, but nothing was blowing.
I called American Home Shield back, and they sent somebody out here. Holder's Air came out on a weekend and I was suprised they came. They looked at it, and everything that the guy told me was different from what the Fast Response people told me. He said my system didn't hold as much air as the Fast Response tech claimed it did, and he told me I got ripped off. So, he checked the system and said that there was a leak because there was approximately 2 pounds of Freon in there. But I just paid a thousand and something dollars for some last year, and I know that’s not normal. He said he couldn't find where the leak was coming from, that that’s all the Freon that I had in there, and he didn't know what was going on. He said he couldn’t find it. It’s gonna have to be replaced. He had to send his diagnosis to American Home Shield.
From then until now, American Home Shield said they couldn't get a hold of Holder's. I also can't get ahold of them. I’ve left messages with Holder’s, but they haven't responded to the issue. So, I called back American Home Shield to tell them that. Now, they're saying they’ll send Fast Response back to my house, and they said it was expedited. I’ve called Fast Response they said it was not expedited. So, I called American Home Shield back and told them what Fast Response said and they said, “Nope.” I called Fast Response back, they said they still don’t have me as expedited and they may be able to get me in possibly tomorrow or the next day or Saturday, but they would let me know a day ahead.
I have emphysema, which is hard for me to breathe, and my grandson has asthma. My basement is already starting to suffer with the humidity because it’s not a walk-out basement. Last year, mold grew in my house when the air conditioner went out. I really don't trust Fast Response. They went to my rental property, and they said they repaired that and then they wanted $110 a pound for Freon. So, I told them to not put the Freon. I went to another company, and they said there was something that needed to be replaced, and then they'd replace that and put the Freon on there. They did all of that, and it cost me like 200 bucks versus 1,000 last year for this system, and who knows how much this year for it. So, I don’t know what Fast Response is really doing.
I’m not complaining about American Home Shield because they only have who they have contracted to do your work and to work in my area. It’s not been a very good experience at all. This is very frustrating. When I go home at night, I have a little window air conditioner that a friend allowed me to use. But it’s small, so it really only helps the living room, and we’re all gathered up in my living room.
As far as submitting claims, I’ve always called. But the conversation is a little rough when you speak to someone that doesn’t speak very, very good English. They speak English but not as smooth as you’re used to. But you work through that, and I understand that. They do what they're able to do, and they can only give me the contractor that American Home Shield have contracted to do what they did that I’m looking for. But I have not had any kinda luck with the contracted companies.

Then the contractor called within the same day. The guy who came out was very professional and friendly. He explained in detail what the issue was, but he told me that he didn’t have the element on his truck. He would have to order it and as soon as that part got in, he would bring it over and that was what he did. And It has been perfect since. I'm diabetic, so I depend on the broiler feature in my oven versus steak. So, I was very happy once I got it fixed. So far, my experiences with American Home Shield have been great. They have been able to handle all of the situations that I've encountered with regards to having things fixed around my home. So I haven't had anything bad with the exception of the very first company I used. I had a horrible experience with them and I would never recommend them. That situation was rectified, thankfully, and American Home Shield is in my good graces right now. Since then, I've done my claims online. That was easy. I did it when I had a leak in my kitchen sink and a stoppage in my two bathrooms upstairs. I went online, logged into my account, clicked on what I needed and basically had an appointment within about two hours. BestWay Mechanical worked really quickly.

American Home Shield sent Sears in for an appliance issue that we had, and they did a fantastic job. And there was so much needed that they just totaled it out, and I took the payoff and paid a little more and got a refrigerator. Submitting claims through American Home Shield has been easy. It’s kinda hard on some of the stuff because then you gotta pay everything upfront. Plumbing-wise, I do not like their selections. I really don't care for them. They only have one plumber that comes out, and he comes from Wichita, which is two hours away. They do have some people that work for them that are from Midwest City. Actually, they're supposed to be coming out today because this will be the third visit.
I’ve also had the problem of American Home Shield charging me service calls each time. I’ve had to call them and tell them, “No, this is from the same one. Don’t charge me another service call.” Also, their hold time is the worst that could be. They have a terrible hold time to get a hold of anybody. And then, a lot of them are out of the country, and I do not want to talk to people out of the country. My mom was scammed. Homeland security thinks it might have been somebody who’s working for a legitimate company by the day, and sending people over and scamming. So, I refuse to talk to anybody out of the country. And I think that’s rude if they do that. If they don't have the money to pay people here, then take some cuts in their salary. Moreover, I had one problem that they never fixed. It was on some ductwork, and it was a joke. And I finally just gave up on it.

The issue that I filed a claim on with American Home Shield was handled okay by Discount Contractors. I was a little bit disappointed that I had to submit the second claim. I had an earlier claim where they replaced the garbage disposal. And in replacing the garbage disposal, they discovered that the kitchen sink was leaking, but they wouldn’t repair it. They had me call in a second claim while they were already here. They said that they thought it was an American Home Shield policy. All they had to do was replace one bolt, and that cost me an additional $75, so that was disappointing. If you’re here working on the sink and you’re replacing the garbage disposal and it’s leaking, it makes sense that the two would go together. I can understand if it was the bathroom sink, but they were under the sink replacing the disposal and even sent me pictures of it.
When I file my claims with American Home Shield, it’s a combination of both online and phone methods, and I have a property manager that also files them for me. For the most part, dealing with the representatives has been good. I hope AHS would give you an opportunity to get to a representative instead of having to listen to, “You can do this online. You can do this online.” They could give an immediate option to get the customer service, because sometimes the claims are complicated and you need to speak to someone to make sure that it’s entered correctly. And that’s really frustrating because it takes like 20 or 30 minutes hold time to get to speak to a human being.

The two main things I called American Home Shield about have not been corrected, and one of them is never gonna get corrected because they say that they don’t do that. I submitted my claim online and when I didn't get a response, then I called. The representatives were nice but the plumbing people that they referred me to first, for the hot water heater, don’t do the Home Shield anymore. So I lost about three weeks there. The contractor was supposed to have ordered a part and then come back. Finally, I called back again to Home Shield and I told them what the contractor told me, that they don’t do Home Shield. I told Home Shield they had to send somebody else and that’s what they did.
They sent a different guy out and he said the water heater needs to be serviced. The water heater needs to be descaled, cleaned and flushed out every now and then. But that’s not part of the Home Shield deal so I still don’t have a working hot water heater. Honestly, this unit is broken but they're saying it's just a service thing. It can be fixed by doing this and this but they're not doing it. Also, it was never mentioned in the home inspection that anything was wrong with the gas tankless hot water heater.
I could’ve also had all this done if I’d known before my work date. But now, I’m working. So it never got done. It's just waiting and waiting. It took two visits and over three weeks of me waiting for the contractors to get there and do it. It’s a bad situation because I don’t know what to do. American Home Shield said they don’t cover the service and I thought that’s what I was buying with the home warranty – to cover things inside my house if something doesn’t work or breaks. I needed a plumber two months ago and I still don’t have a working hot water heater. There are two jets in my shower that still don’t work.
I was told that I need to find a plumber and I tried to get a plumber to come but I’ve had two different plumbers scheduled on two different dates and both times, they were no show and no call. The third plumber was also no show and no call. I've found that because I work Monday to Friday, no one wants to come in the weekend. I’m certainly not gonna take a day off work and sit there because I scheduled three different plumbers and each of them was a no-show. They didn't even call. I cannot afford to take off work.
Then as for the electrical claim, that went around and around. It’s about a fan and when the contractor came out, he was supposed to check the fans. I had also bought a light fixture and he was supposed to put it up. But he didn't put the light fixture up. He checked the fans and said the two fans needed a part so he had to order a part. I got a call three weeks after that, saying they got the part in. So I need to schedule but of course, they don’t come out on Saturday. The latest appointment is at 4:00 PM and we’re always at our job then. So that’s still waiting. I also ended up just paying a guy $20 to hang my light for me.

We had several claims to AHS about the dishwasher. By the time AHS added all the deductibles I paid, I bought a new dishwasher. And then, when they sent someone out the last time, he was like, "This is irreparable and you need a new dishwasher." So, he let AHS know. And they hooked me up with a company to bring me a new dishwasher. Those people showed up and told me they couldn't put the dishwasher in because I needed to have an electrical outlet installed. Dishwashers are hardwired into the home. So, he just literally talked to me like I was a fool and left and just left the dishwasher in my living room.
I was never able to reach anybody at the company and when I called AHS, they said, "you didn't renew your warranty on time. So, have a good day." AHS said because I didn't renew that it just canceled everything out. That if I wanted to renew and pay, that they would be more than happy to continue talking with me. I said I'm not renewing because of how they treated me with this. I wanted a home warranty company that I feel like has my back and they want me to enjoy my home and all the appliances in my home. It had been such a fiasco to get any help all along when they should have replaced the dishwasher way back and stopped sending someone out.
I made my first couple of claims electronically, they let the repair person come out, then they tell me they fixed it. Then after the fourth visit, I talked to a person every time. I just begged them to please get me a new dishwasher. I've lived in the house for a year. And I've done six loads through the dishwasher in the year that I've lived here. It's really miserable. We have a big family. I will cook more if it's easier to do the dishes. And AHS was not helpful. They wanted me to pay that $75 every time, and somebody came out eight times.
But the contractors were always really friendly to me, that they weren't gonna suggest I'd get a new dishwasher, and they would always tell me, "If the repair is within reason." And I'm like, "it stopped being reasonable three visits ago." With the last time the guy came out, I wouldn't let AHS send the same company. I made them send someone from Sears. They sent a Sears appliance man, and he took one look at it and was like, "Oh my god, they don't even use the same materials to make dishwashers anymore. This dishwasher is so old, it's a dinosaur. Why didn't they get you a new one forever ago?" And I said the repair person always said they could fix it. He said, "I'm not even touching this. I'm not even gonna try to fix this thing." I just said thank you. And so, we got a new dishwasher, but it's just sitting in my living room, and it's not installed.

My AC went out recently and I called American Home Shield. They had an automated system so it automatically fed the data to the repair guys. Within an hour, they called me. The tech was a pretty straight shooter, which I appreciated. He didn't turn around and try to sell me a $15,000 system. But he did say, “Your particular system’s using a coolant that’s no longer made. So, you need to start planning for the future.” I had it serviced last year and the guy back then didn't tell me that. He just tried to sell me a $15,000 system. So, having a little bit more information was terrific. The recent tech suspected that a wire was burning out because one of the contacts was corroded. So, he directly wired it with the copper wire since the copper is less corrosive and should provide a better overall contact. It’s been three weeks that we’ve used the AC and we haven’t had an issue.

We have two air conditioning units - one for the upstairs, one for the down. The air conditioner upstairs wasn’t working. We called a repairman. It was before Three Brothers came. The repairman said that it was a plumbing problem, and that we’d have to call a plumber to get the line blown out. But he told us that he believed that the stoppage was in the U-joint underneath our bathroom sink. So, to save the $75, we took the U-joint off ourselves, cleaned it out, put it back on. The air conditioning worked for a couple of days, and then it quit again, at which point, we called American Home Shield. Because not only had that quit, but the same day, our downstairs unit also quit.
We couldn’t even stay in our house because it was so hot. So, then American Home Shield sent someone the next day. They said we had two separate problems. The upstairs one, the contractor said the water was still clogged in a different spot than the first guy had said. Instead of telling me to call a plumber, he just went and got an air compressor and took care of it himself, which would have been really nice if that had happened the first time with the other guy. It was really nice that he fixed it. And then the downstairs one, he said we had a Freon leak and all the Freon had come out.
So, American Home Shield paid for the repair and for part of the Freon. We had to pay like $700 for the rest of the Freon. I know that that costs a lot and American Home Shield doesn’t cover it. But that’s the whole reason we have homeowner’s insurance is because expenses like $700 for Freon is not really in our daily budget. So, that was a really big blow to us. So, there was some positives and negatives about the whole experience.
But overall, AHS always partners with friendly people. I’ve never had a grouchy or inept contractor. They always come out quickly, so that’s a good thing. The other problem we experienced was that when I went online to contact American Home Shield about both of my units being out, I just clicked AC, but I didn’t say how many units were out. But when the repairman arrived, he said he could only fix one unit because the work order had been placed for a single unit automatically by AHS. I had to rush around trying to call and get them to approve him to fix our other unit while he was still here. I didn’t have to pay another $75 for him to come back. So, it was kind of annoying that it was just assumed that I only had one broken. But it was taken care of, which was awesome.

Till today (6/11/19), the AC does not work and I have not been communicated what is the status of the repair job. Made several calls to the contractor and all they say is that the status is "pending". No indication of when the problem is expected to be solved. Calling American Home Shield help desk is a waste of time because nobody knows anything. They don't even have the records of the case. They just promise to find out and have somebody call you back, but nobody does. No email, no phone calls, nothing. Meanwhile, my tenants are suffering scorching Florida heat. It is not admissible that the repair of an AC takes more than 3 or 4 days and besides that, they are totally unresponsive and uncommunicative. Customer service is completely clueless. I keep speaking to people that have no idea what is going on and is not able to solve anything, I called the I don't know, I don't care attitude. They always put me on hold, I am spending at least 4 hours a day trying to get my problem solved, but nobody is really able to help. Everything started 2 month ago when I put my first claim, plumber found nothing, but he charged me for an uncovered item, which I paid out of my pocket. I kept losing water... I found a leak while I was replacing a shower faucet, I opened the tile from shower and found that the main valve system was leaking.
I called AHS again on 6/3/2019 and they sent a plumbing company as second opinion (not without demanding it, because remember this is clueless people that do not care and do not know what is going on). They said that the shower valve is leaking and they have to replace it (right...). They told me insurance will pay for that but, since the previous sealing was some type of plastic, they have to put a welding sealing. so they said that I will have to pay about $285 out of my pocket for something they called a modification which was replacing that sort of plastic seal for welding seal. I thought was too much money so I called AHS to see my options.
After speaking with customer service for about 5 hours on Thursday the 6th 2019, they said they can send me a check for the covered item (remember that I am spending hours with them and demanding because again this is clueless people that do not care and do not know what is going on) and I would cover any additional not covered item. I said fine. Today they called me saying that they are sorry but the payment was not approved because the repair was done already... I said, "what? What repair? Nobody has made any repair yet," after a long waiting then they said, "I am sorry. It was denied because the plumber could not make an opening to the wall and could not make a diagnostic." I said what?
I already removed the tiles before plumber came and he gave me an estimate already, they actually just told me to remove a couple more of tiles and to call them so they can start the work. This was on and on and on for hours and you know. They do not care do not know. It was like speaking to a wall, so that day I gave up. I called on Friday 6/14/2019 again (I just spent about 3 hours that day). Finally spoke to a representative that called the plumbing company to ask for the estimate of the work so they can send me a check and I am returning back to the same place again, and I will have to spend another 4 a day hours to speak to people that will transfer me to other people that do not know... do not care. This company is a joke.
UPDATE 6/11/2019: So today this company called me, and they made me an offer they said they can offer me $16.15 for all this work, so I said what?? Sixteen dollars? And fifteen cents?? The valve itself on Home Depot is about $120 and the plumber job? So they said: "you can call to your own plumber and pay to them but we can just cover up to $16.15." and the explanation this woman gave was, "We Negotiate to a great scale so that is why we can get those prices," I hang up and I called again and they just said, "this is just the information that we have." So they repeated the same. (This is crazy.)
She also said that she sees on the system that a supervisor will be in touch with me I guess is the person that read here my complain And she said, "You can talk to her if you want and explain the issue to her and MAYBE she can do anything about it..." Well I am still waiting that call and just FYI I already know this company is not worth it, is a joke and they do not know (clueless people) and do not care. But I want to know how far this goes. I just cannot believe business like this exist. I have been paying $50 a month and they were nice until I made this claim... That is called strategic stealing. I already spent on a plumbing company $450 today 6/11/2019 (and they want to give me 16.15! Geeezz). I already made the repair and I am just posting this so you can know.

I filed a claim online and had a phone call back and a plumber to my house same day to diagnose water heater. Plumber says it needs replaced and now I am on day 6 with nothing to show for it. My wife and I have been on the phone every day multiple times a day and all they say is it is under review and will try and expedite meanwhile I am running my family to other family members homes to take showers and do laundry. Possibly if the call center was in the United States and not the Philippines like they told us during one of our many phone calls communication would be better. It is a hot water heater not a doorbell for crying out loud. If this is expediting I sure hope my A/C doesn’t go out this summer.

We recently bought our home and our Real Estate Agent wrote a home warranty into our contract. American Home Shield. They were paid by the title company... a month later they say they never got paid even though I have the canceled check to prove it. Their customer service rep Jake put me on hold more than 8 times to “check” on that. After 40 minutes on the phone with Jake, during which I demanded to speak with his supervisor no less than 10 times, I finally hung up. His supervisor either refused to talk to me or Jake never told him/her. I am livid. I have already had to pay out for repairs that they were supposed to cover. I suppose this is how they manage to make money... sell policies but don’t actually provide the services!

I had a home inspection done on my home but was unable to turn it on. During the time to inspect it would work, the sellers disclosure claimed it was in good working condition yet 23 years old. Had service on it a year before. So I asked for a home warranty and send me a guy out from a company who had no clue he was there servicing for a warranty claim and thought I was paying out of pocket and told me I had a large lack of refrigerant and suggested I add 5 pounds. I said find the problem and what’s causing it because this is under home warranty. Did a leak test and saw the coil was bad.
I later get authorization from AHS that we can replace the coil but the other work to do that would cost me $1150. Why the hell would I invest into a 23 year old system where R-22 will be phased out by the end of the year and hard to get? This company claims to be there and I got screwed thinking I would utilize the warranty on my a/c and/or furnace if it went bad but still have to pay a bunch out of pocket. Complete rip off!!!

AHS uses a call center in another country and they do not give a crap about the customers. I tried to cancel my service and was told by one person there was no cancellation fee and then received an email 2 days later notifying me I am being charged a $41.99 cancellation fee. So I call again and get another person from a foreign call center, who tells me I owe $25 for canceling mid contract? I had a one year contract and then was paying month to month so I am not sure how I am canceling “mid contract”. Now I am sitting on hold for 30 minutes while the person at the call center looks into it. I am done. I will never use them again or recommend them to anyone. They have put me on hold several times and did not resolve anything for me. I finally just hung up.
Melanie,
I am sorry that we were not able to offer a resolution that you were pleased with while the contract was active. We hope this experience does not deter you from considering AHS in the future for your home warranty needs.

I have had American Home Sheild Home warranty for years and I have be happy with it for the most part. However, in May my nightmare began. With warm weather approaching I took advantage of an AC check up. The tech came out and informed me that there were several things that needed to be replaced/repaired. No worries right... He submitted the work order and American Home Shield sent another company out to do the repairs. Ok, odd but ok just get it repaired. New company refused to touch it due to it being a work order from a different company and leaves. I contacted your company, who has now shifted the call center abroad, and was talked in circles and I had to fight to talk to a supervisor. Supervisor talked in circles too.
After over an hour on the phone I got her to make clear statements about what was going to be done. She said she would call and update me the next day. No call came. I called the service line again. This time I talked to a representative who provided customer service and tried to contact the service tech. No luck. The service tech didn't answer but he left a message for them to call me. No call. A couple of days pass and I contacted your company via Twitter after waiting in the phone queue longer than my job allowed. (Yes, doing all this and also having a job) I was assigned a point of contact after my tweet. (Why did it take a tweet to do this?) The representative said they would contact the service and they would call me (sound familiar?) No call. I contacted them.
They continue to call the same service company who finally answers them and says they will call. No call. I informed the representative. The response "wow". So now it is a month and a half later no one has contacted me me about service and repair of my AC unit. I have paid two service fees and I have to constantly contact your company to get any information or produce any movement on my case. So what exactly is the service you provide? Next steps is reading through my contract with you to see if you are in violation. At bare minimum I am considering a formal complaint to the BBB.
Tara,
I see my colleague is working with you on this case. She will continue to assist you to ensure there is a resolution. We appreciate your patience as we work to an agreeable resolution with you.
Enjoy your day.

I was on the phone with them for FOUR hours today!! Not only do they outsource their calls and claim to be unable to transfer you to a supervisor in the USA, but they disconnected me several times!! SEE YOU IN COURT, AMERICAN HOME SHIELD!!! YOU ARE BEYOND AWFUL!

I had a problem with my faucet in my bathroom for the tub, the hot water faucet and the shower. And American Home Shield sent a company that came out. The gentleman looked at it and said they gotta order a part and that they'd call me in a couple of days. The very next day, I got a call from that particular company and they quoted me a price of $700. They also said that we're not up to standard. We don't have any hot and cold shut off valve for the tub. They looked everywhere and couldn't find the part. The person also said, "We will contact American Home, and when they call you back, you give them hell because of the price. It's gonna be like $600 something." I told him that that didn't make sense to me. He called me back and said they were gonna contact AHS, call me, and someone from AHS would call me, too.
Then a really nice, young lady called. She went over the exact same thing that he said to me about the part and how much it was gonna cost. I told her I have a shut off valve. The gentleman took a picture of the panel, but he never opened the panel at the back of the tub. My son-in-law opened it up, and there's a shut off valve for the hot and cold water. I told her to have someone from the company contact me. The guy contacted me yesterday. But before he contacted me, my son-in-law who is a mechanic told me that the part was at Ace Hardware store. He found the part and he fixed it.
So, I paid $100 for someone to come out here and say they have to order a part and then call me back and quote me almost $700 to fix it when all he had to do was shop around and would have found it. I talked to American Home Shield. And when I said to them that I felt that I should have been credited my $100 back because someone came out here but didn't do anything. He took pictures and said they would order a part. When the parts come in, they would come back out and fix it. And the lady told me that the only thing they could do is give me $50 of my $100 back because he came out. That's besides the point. He didn't service me. He didn't repair my faucet. I paid for something and it wasn't taken care of.
I canceled my service with American Home Shield because I felt like they should have credited me back. And when she told me she could only give me $50 back, she didn't even say, "Let me let you talk to my supervisor so you can explain your situation. Ms. **, let us work something out." It was cut and dry. "We will give you $50 back, Miss **." And they didn't have a problem canceling my service. She asked if I still wanted to cancel my service and when I said I do, she said, "Okay. You will receive an email, and you receive something in the mail of your servicing account." They didn't go over backwards to save me. They let me go just like that and they only gave me $50.
Other than that, I have used them on several occasions before and had good experience. I had a plumber come out here before for the bathroom toilet. I had them come out here for something that's upstairs or in the basement. I have used them on numerous occasions. I call them for my air conditioner. I don't mind paying the $100 when the service is rendered. But with the latest claim, there was no service rendered, and I felt like they just took my money. It was a bad experience. And as a matter of fact, this is not the only time. They sent a company out here before for my furnace. And the young man said, "I'm gonna tell you what parts to go to Lowe's or Home Depot to pick up and you pay me. And I'll cancel the report, and you pay me."
I certainly hate to hear that you have received less than satisfactory service. I will follow up with you as soon as possible in an effort to assist with unresolved issues. Thanks for your patience.

I was not satisfied with the first bunch that was out to replace the microwave. That time, there were three men who came and there was a young kid that was in charge. He said that they couldn't install it because there was not 30 inches from the counter to the top of the microwave. It was like 3/8 inches short and apparently, for new construction, it has to be 30 inches. But since I had one already in there before, they should have installed it as was. And then American Home Shield had to send a second company out to install it the next week. I had the washing machine fixed also and AHS did a good job there. It's just that when calling in, they could answer quicker. I have to wait on the phone a long time before I can get to talk to someone. But I would recommend them.

I was supposed to expect the contractor Beach's Air Conditioning & Heating between noon and 4:00pm. The young man that came, Robert, was very pleasant, fast and thorough. He had my air conditioning working again in about 20 minutes. I was very happy. It was an excellent experience. It was very professional and my problem was resolved very quickly. After the repair, it was cool. Before that, it was hot.
I would recommend to my neighbors to get American Home Shield especially those of us that are older and many of my neighbors are. We don't have someone that can repair things. With American Home Shield, technicians come quickly, they do the job and the cost is much less than it would be if I had to call a regular service person. The original reason that I subscribed to American Home Shield was because I have a cousin who lives in Augusta, Georgia who has been a customer of theirs for 20 years and she's very satisfied.

I was with American Home Shield for quite a while and this year would be my ninth year. I've been with them consistently then I had a membership lapse for a month. But I'm moving to another company because AHS is not really well-informed with the contractors that they're hiring and sending out to people's homes. When it's a business, it doesn't have to be personal or a lot of the boxes do not need to be checked as far as different concerns or desires on what a person would want in a contractor. But when it comes to the home, there are some more important boxes that need to be checked and the company should be more informed than American Home Shield.
I get the feeling that not only are they not well-informed, but the contractors that they're hiring don't care either. So my highest concern with American Home Shield is getting below shady contractors. In fact, I did not answer my door one time because I was too scared. I am not comfortable to have certain people in my house and even on a personal level, I'm careful about that because we live in a different time now. Then on top of that, AHS increased their monthly fees. That's fine for new customers coming on to this home warranty opportunity but not for people that have been with them over five years. Also, they're like machines when we call them. It seems that they give us a pre-fabricated answer for the different questions that are asked. So, I'm really glad that I'm leaving them and I would not recommend American Home Shield to anybody.

We had a claim for our air conditioning, which was a leftover problem from the previous time that the contractor fixed it. They came out to fix it in the winter because our furnace was off and we didn't realize until we went to turn the AC on when it got warmer that the fan wouldn't shut off, so we had to call them back. They fixed it when they came, and there weren’t any problems. We also had a claim for our dryer. It started making all kinds of racket when you ran it. Some of the little secure things that hold the tumbler in place were broken and the contractor fixed it. We've had him out before and he’s a very nice man and he does a good job.
I submitted the claims online to American Home Shield. I'm internet savvy and some people aren't, so it depends on the person but I can do it, so it's good with me. We are in Arizona. So, if you don't have an AC, you're in a world of trouble, and we're in our 70's. So, I found it a little annoying that they took a long time to get somebody out here. But other than that, I'm satisfied with AHS and I've recommended them to quite a few people.

And the website is okay except that if it’s something that’s not just static and listed on the website, then there’s no opportunity for you to indicate what it might be. They could have a selection or a comment box where you can put other. Also, it’s very difficult to reach them on the telephone. They’re great once you get them, but the waiting and getting to them are a little bit unreasonable. Other than that, everything went well with Myers. They came out and took care of the AC for us, and everything is working fine.

Updated on 08/11/2019: I waited 3 weeks in a horrible heat wave in Virginia with a pregnant woman, toddler with asthma & a dog. The company they sent out ...after 3 weeks brought the wrong part after a lengthy authorization period with AHS and couldn’t tell me when the correct one would be in. They were horrible with customer service. After about 20 hours on the phone with them & many promises that someone would call me back... no one ever did. I could not wait another day. I called a local a/c company who I hired and they had the correct part installed in less than 1 day. Unfortunately it cost me $750 - money the warranty company should have paid. I have been a customer for 10 years & have not had but this 1 claim in those years. I more than paid for service with my $650 per year contract with them. These people stink & do not honor their contract warranty with them!!! Do not use!!!
Updated on 06/14/2019: I’m still awaiting a diagnostic for my a/c. The company they sent out has 48 hours to render a diagnosis... It has been over that time period & AHS says they can’t do anything without diagnosis... But they do not hold their contracted company’s accountable to the 48 hour window. I have no a/c!!! Awful!!! I have reported this issue via this website & of course no response from AHS!!! I don’t know how they get the rating they get!!!
Original review: They advertise prompt service... my tenant lost a/c on Friday 6/7/19...notified AHS and they said couldn’t contact anyone til Monday 6/10/19 & that company can’t come out til 6/13/19. So they are without a/c or even a diagnosis for almost a week. As a landlord I need to have prompt service. This is not that. I’m upset & my tenant is upset. All AHS DOES is say that’s all they can do. But make no mistake. They want their payments promptly.
Good morning Amy,
I understand your frustration in regard to the delay in service to have the air conditioner serviced. I would be glad to speak with you to discuss your experience.

I have been with AHS for a while, in fact, I just purchased an additional contract for a condo I am purchasing. I called AHS about the AC not cooling. They sent a technician from “Seabreez” to look at the unit. He was here 10 min and diagnosed the unit as needing a txv valve and 14 lbs of freon. I called AHS the following day because they still have not approved the repair. Please keep in mind it is over 100 degrees outside! The following day I called AHS again, and the csr told me nothing... a 5 yr old would have been more help. The next day I finally get a response. AHS will partially cover the repair. So it will be an additional $550 to the $100 service call fee. “Seabreez” finally contacted me the following day.
Now for a bigger issue. While all this playing around with AHS reps that are absolutely no help (they talk in circles, not really answering anything to put you off as long as possible). I called for a second opinion at my own expense. This AC contractor came out and looked at unit for over an hour. Looked at the “Seabreez” invoice, and said they do not see this at all. They said a small adjustment was made to a setting in the unit and it works fantastic! And they did not charge me a dime!!! The contractor just left saying be careful and check info on contractors before letting them do any repairs. So I guess in the long run, AHS putting me off for so long was a blessing. It caused me to call for another opinion and get the correct diagnosis. For free. The sad part is AHS has my $100 service call fee for doing nothing but sending a crappy contractor to my home. Read the reviews for “Seabreez”. They are awful.
Hi T Leighton,
Your concerns are understood regarding the noncovered claim and service fee charge. I am glad to hear about the second opinion contractor that was able to repair the issue. I would be glad to speak with you and address your concerns.

I think it is pointless to have this home warranty coverage. They do not do much and at the end whatever you are getting back is already paid by your annual payment. And in many cases, you still have to hire a professional to fix the problem. Recently my house was sold and they charged me the cancellation fee. I explained lady on the phone that I am canceling because I do not own this house anymore, but she did not want to listen and said that this is their policy. Such a wrong policy. And this is after being with them for more than 5 years, insuring 3 houses. Every year. And as a real estate Broker, I will never recommend AHS to any of my clients and will spread the word around. This company does not appreciate long-time customers and professionals who bring them business.

My most recent claim was for my garage door and it was pretty quick service. But it took a little bit of time because I wrote everything down when we negotiated the new plan and American Home Shield promised me that my first service call would be free but when I spoke to get my garage door serviced, they said they had no idea about that. So it took several calls to finally speak to the right person who said they had looked back in our records and we did in fact negotiate the first service fee would be free. So that was a little bit frustrating. But other than that, it was fine. I spoke with three or four different representatives and they were very good. Everybody was always nice.
The people from Garage Door Experts were excellent too. They were very professional and they went over and beyond. They gave us a few tips and pointers about how we can prevent issues from happening. The garage door openers are necessary. It makes it more convenient with the kids. Overall, our experience with American Home Shield has been good so far. The warranty is worth it. We had a total of four service calls for air-conditioning units last year so I was glad we had them.
Your feedback is greatly appreciated. I am pleased to hear about the service fee issue that was corrected.

I called American Home Shield and set up my claim for plumbing. A few minutes later, I got the email from whatever company was gonna come out and do it. It was right before Memorial weekend. They called us at 7:00 something in the morning and I missed the call. I called them back and left a message. They called back and left a message. Then I called them back. So, we probably contacted them twice. After the second time I called them back, I then emailed them and texted the phone number they had texted who they were from. But I never got a response back. I waited for a week. I thought, “Okay. Maybe it’s because of Memorial Day.” But still no phone call.
I called American Home Shield and told them that I have noticed that they have billed me already for the $100 deductible, and their plumbing company never came out. And when I was talking to them, I was explaining that they actually owe me $100 from last September when they charged me $100 for a deductible after Sears insisted that I give them the $99.95 when they showed up because the agent from American Home Shield put it in as a cash call. It was supposed to be my dishwasher and refrigerator at that time, and they sent somebody who could only do the refrigerator part.
Recently, they were trying to charge me $100 for the plumber that never came. There is so much miscommunication in the company. They’re nice people when you’re speaking to them at first, but you can’t ever speak to a supervisor. They put you on long holds. The last time I held on was 45 minutes. We were doing this on chat and then they sent the transcript. So, I looked at the transcript. It was then sent to me so that I could make sure I had it in black and white because I find that with American Home Shield, nothing I say or the person says on the other line gets followed through. Nothing ever is followed through. With the plumbing issue that I had from September, I had over five hours logged in my paper where I’m calling in just a week trying to get the $100 refund that I never got.
Needless to say, I did get a plumber. And my husband said he came in, fixed the problem, and he was quick. He didn’t question like, “How did this happen?” He was pleasant. But in that transcript, I made sure I clarified the one that said the rep was going to waive the $100 fee because of all the hassle that I’ve had. I said, “So, what I understand you’re saying is that you’re gonna work on getting my refund from back in September. You’re gonna make sure they take off the $100 that they charged me for the plumber that never showed up. And you’re giving me the courtesy of not charging me the $100 for the plumber that will be coming out. Yes, got it.”
Now, I’ve been harassed with like a dozen phone calls. I’ve gotten two bills. And there are two emails about how I owe them $200. My account is overdue. They tried to charge my credit card that my monthly bill is charged to, but I purposely left a balance on there so that they wouldn’t be able to charge it. I eventually had to pay the bill. So, I know if they’re ever gonna charge it again, it’ll go through, and then trying to get that money back will just be a headache.
I told the latest woman I spoke to the quick synopsis of everything and I also told her I just needed to speak to a supervisor so I could get things resolved. But she said to tell her the story. She needed to know. So I told her the story and she came back and said, “I see that the person did come out in September.” I told her they did. But I also asked if I needed to break it down to her because it won’t really matter. She's not going to be able to do anything about it. She said she wanted to make sure it gets processed.
And the second time, I told her I was really tired of talking to her because she was not helping me. I’d been on the phone for 45 minutes. She put me on hold again and all of a sudden, the line was just dead. There was no music, but the phone was still telling me how many minutes I was on. After a few minutes it went dead and I called back. Another woman did the same thing. I see that I’m gonna have to figure out how to get a hold of someone that will make sure that AHS is accountable.
I won’t cancel my membership because I want my money back, and I don’t want them leaving the charges on me. When I'll close the account, they’ll say I still owed them 200. Then it goes on bad on my credit. And I’m not doing that. So now, I’ll be charged another $48 for another month of service that I won’t use because it has never been, I call, I set up a work order, the person shows up and something’s done, and it’s all good.
I’ve had this service for two years. I haven’t made that many calls, and they’ve all been simple things. When I called to find out about my air conditioning unit that seems to be going bad, that is not even worth having the service. They’re just, “We’re gonna pump Freon in it.” It was insane. I might as well just not have the insurance. I have absolutely nothing positive to say about them. American Home Shield is not worth the headache.

My air blower motor went bad and I made a claim with American Home Shield over the phone. I had a pretty good interaction with the claims rep but it took about two days for somebody to show up. But it was okay. The contractor was excellent. I especially like the technician's work ethics. He was pretty fast. He was pretty knowledgeable, and he knew what he was doing. But after I filed this claim, American Home Shield raised my insurance payment, so I'm not gonna be handling them anymore. I’m gonna find somebody else. I will not recommend them.

My AC wasn't working and so I submitted a claim online to the American Home Shield website. Their contractor gave me a 24 to 48 hour notice and emailed me when their guy was 30 minutes away. The tech who came was friendly and easy to deal with. He told me what was wrong and did his own thing. Since then, the AC has been working and I'm very satisfied with AHS' service.

I had an AC service. And the technicians sent out by AHS replaced the capacitor, and then it went back out that night. I called and tried to get them for two days, and I couldn't. My air was out for almost three weeks in May and it has been 99. And somewhere, it was dropped. I finally called American Home Shield back and they sent out someone else who fixed it. I was also having a tune up for one of the ACs. I've talked to AHS about it and they've scheduled it.
When my garage door went down, I called AHS and asked their rep if the spring was covered. I read the contract and that was a gray area because it said remote control which didn't make sense to me, and she said that it was. I asked her to double-check because my car was stuck in there and if it was not covered, then I wouldn't go through them. She confirmed that it was covered and she gave me someone who would do the repair. The guy came out and the minute he walked in, he said that the spring was not covered even though when I talked to whoever at American Home Shield, they told me that it was covered. She could've easily have told me that they couldn't handle it. Their rep on the phone should have better access to the contract and a clearer understanding to it.
The garage door has been good since the repair. I then looked at my bank statement and they charged me for $75 and I have no idea what that was for. I shouldn't have been charged a service charge for that claim. I wasn't happy with the AHS rep that I talked to about it. She couldn't give me a satisfactory answer on why I was charged. I had to pay the technician 400 on the spot, which was fine because my car was stuck there and I would've had to pay someone, but I wouldn't have to wait from Sunday to Wednesday when he showed up. Other than that, I've had American Home Shield forever and I am satisfied with them. With the overall claims process, I've always been happy because they've been really responsive.

Our washer was squeaking, howling and screeching. I submitted my claim online to AHS for it because it’s easier because it takes a long time to get through when you’re calling. The contractor that they sent was excellent. He ordered the parts and they had them sent here. It took a couple of days to get the parts but he was here the day after the parts got here. And he fixed it, and now, it’s running like a champ. He was just very friendly and was really a nice person. AHS has been so good and I wouldn’t cancel this contract for anything in the world. I also had my icemaker go out on my refrigerator and it’s an older refrigerator. And the contractor worked and worked until he got it working right. And so I enjoy having my icemaker working again. AHS is worth every penny.

We were having some leakage around the base of our toilet and we also were having an issue where when we flushed it, it would continue to run. We submitted a claim with AHS and got an automated system. Normally, we're told that we'll get a call maybe within 24 hours if it's a business day. But the last time I called it was over Memorial Day, so I didn't expect a call until the following workday. And in the morning, that Tuesday, right after Memorial Day we got a call from the plumber.
He was very professional, polite and competent. He definitely was very prompt in getting back to us when we submitted the claim. He made an appointment, came right on time and fixed what needed to be fixed very efficiently, and we've had no issues since then. The issue with the toilet is one less thing to worry about now. It's nice to cross it out our list and get it off our minds. And that way, also, we knew we were preventing a worse problem.

I had a service call to my house for a toilet issue. The toilet was continually running and it was overflowing. It is the only toilet in the house, and I got kids. I had to turn the water at the toilet off to keep it from overflowing and to keep it from running when I wasn’t home. The guy from Patriot Plumbing came out and he said we needed a part. But three times later of having to call them to have him come right back out again, the plumber himself admitted that he had used the wrong part and had modified the part to try and make it work. So, I called American Home Shield and told them what the plumber told me. I also told them that they need to give me somebody different because this person obviously didn’t know what he was doing, or they could replace the toilet. They said they would replace the toilet, and that took another couple of weeks. This has been going on for about three months now.
Another guy from Patriot Plumbing came out two weekends ago to replace the toilet. First, he told me that my toilet was not made anymore. But I saw it in Home Depot on display on the wall this past weekend. It's still being made. Then, he bought this expensive toilet and put it in, but he said it doesn’t sit on the flange. And that I have to remove the ceramic tile around the toilet. But there are flange extenders at Home Depot in that same aisle with the toilet. All he had to do is buy a $5 part and fix it. He refused to do it. So, he raised it back to American Home Shield and told them that the flooring needs to be removed. The flooring is not covered under my insurance policy, but the toilet is. I called American Home Shield and told them that the guy just didn’t wanna do the work. I also tried to explain to them that this situation was pretty much an insurance fraud issue. I'm out $125 deductible, and I need it fixed.
Last weekend, I called another plumber on my own. I paid $400 and some out-of-pocket. It was fixed in 20 minutes. So, I called American Home Shield back to try to cancel my policy saying that I had to call another plumber out there, paid $480 out-of-pocket for the repair, but they still haven't resolved this claim. They sent me to customer retention who tried to sell me to stay with them by saying that they will have somebody from the contractor call me. This was last Tuesday. Somebody called me from the contractor, argued with me on the phone for 20 minutes, and then told me he would call me back within 30 minutes. It's been a week today and I still haven't heard from them.
While all the stuff with the toilet was going on for so long, a leak started under the kitchen sink and the bathroom backs up to the kitchen. So, I called American Home Shield again. I told them that understood this was gonna be a second issue, so I paid another $125 deductible. They sent the same plumber guy out for the issue under the sink. He came out and told me that he couldn't fix the pipe because we have to remove all the cabinet around the sink. I told him to just cut a hole in the back of the cabinet. But he told me he his arm won't reach up there to fix it. So, he left.
I called back American Home Shield and asked for the status of my claim. They said the plumber stated in the notes that he needs the cabinets removed and they don't cover that. They told me that I have to remove the cabinets and then call them back so we can reschedule the service. I told them that the cabinets don’t have to be removed. The guy just didn’t wanna do the work. So again, I called out the plumber that I paid for the toilet, and he had it fixed within the hour and only charged me $200. He didn’t even have to remove the cabinets or cut a hole. He said the guy just didn’t wanna do it.
I've had other calls with American Home Shield in the past, and I used to be a pretty big supporter. When I had a problem with my washing machine, they replaced it. They gave me a credit to go out and buy another washing machine. It was worth it back then. But when I had an air conditioner claim, the tech couldn't even buy a part because the part has to come from American Home Shield and it takes over a week to get in. It's not worth it at all. I'm paying $80 a month for a policy that is worthless to me. I can call my own contractor out the same day and fix the issue.
American Home Shield is outsourcing their customer service and you can't speak to anyone that has English as their first language. It's very, very frustrating. And they're reading off a script. When you ask to speak to the supervisor, they tell you there's no supervisor available. It's just routine. You can't get anywhere with them. It's terrible. It awful. Every time I call American Home Shield, I get somebody from India or Middle Eastern that I can hardly understand, and they're rude. One time, I had a woman on the phone for over an hour and when she came back, she argued with me and hung up on me. I want my deductibles back for both calls on my toilet and kitchen sink. I've had to pay out-of-pocket and I'm gonna cancel my policy which is up for renewal in August. I have had them for a very long time, but I am done with these people.

American Home Shield contractors come pretty quick when I make my claims - usually like a day or two. My most recent claim with them was for my pool. I was on a conference call when the technician from Champion Pool came. I answered the door and I couldn't go talk to him. I just pointed out where he needed to go. But as soon as I got off, the guy was gone. I didn't know if he fixed anything or what happened. He wasn’t here that long, maybe 20 minutes. I never heard anything back. I sent an email and said that I didn't get any information. I called twice and left messages, but he never called me back. My pool seems to be working though, so I guess he fixed it. But it would've been nice to know what he did.
The guy who came out for my air conditioner, however, was really super nice. I had him come out and check the AC because I have a contract with an air conditioning company that comes out twice a year and check everything. They told me I need a new air conditioner because it was leaking. That didn't make sense. But the AHS tech said the air conditioner wasn't leaking and I didn't need a new one. He did a little prep on it and that was it. Everything is great.
I had a problem with American Home Shield once where I got a contract for my son and they kept billing me. He had it for a year. Every time he was gonna put a claim in, it said that the contract wasn’t active. Their people kept telling me not to worry about it. This was in April. The contract was showing as expired, but AHS was still charging me. I tried to explain it to their customer service but the girl just couldn't get it. I had to cancel the policy because she couldn't figure out what to do. I paid for two months and I got a refund for one month because I had to go through the credit card and dispute it.

Our air conditioning unit was surging and causing our breaker to trip. So, there was something wrong with the air conditioner that was causing it. Submitting the claim to American Home Shield was literally just placing a phone call but I did it online instead, and it was very easy. When you call AHS with any kind of issue to talk to a customer service person, the wait time is typically 30 to 45 minutes, which is an excessive amount of time to have to wait to speak to a person. Twice, when we called trying to get this resolved, the person asked to put us on hold and hung up on us on both times. So, we had to go through another 30 to 45-minute wait to call back and to talk to someone else. So, that's annoying, but once you get through, everything is okay.
The way we understand it is that the contractor has a contract with AHS to do services for a certain amount and this particular company has tried to circumvent that and throw a lot of unnecessary cost on the consumer themselves that was not covered. We did not have a positive experience with them. We complained to AHS about them and refused to let these people come back out. We requested a different company, still using American Home Shield. Unfortunately, that company didn’t have anyone available so, we were able to pick a person that we want to use, who we found, and they just have to give all the information to AHS.
We’ll pay them out-of-pocket and then AHS will reimburse us. The AC has not been fixed yet. It takes a few days for the air conditioning company to get approved and we’re fine with that. In the meantime, the AC has been working okay and we’ve been home to flip the breaker back over if there’s a problem. So, we’re happy with how things are going right now.

Submitting the claim for our dryer was a pain in the butt because we have to go online and do everything. But other than that, it went smoothly. The contractor called and told us they would be out within a certain range of time. They were good and our dryer is up and running. But when we had problems with a drain and I had absolutely no confidence in the person that came out. He didn't scope it, and he just made a judgment call on what it was. He was awful.
I told him that toilet was backed up, but he kept flushing it until my whole bathroom was flooded. I had to pull out all sorts of towels to soak it all up because he didn't have any water vacuum with him. So now I've got a whole stack of laundry. The toilets and sinks were backing up, so he arbitrarily called it an obstruction. Then we got a call from American Home Shield and they said it was not covered under the warranty since it was an obstruction. So I had another plumber come out and they looked at it and scoped it, and there is a collapsed pipe. This new plumber has documented what it is. He got scoping film of what it is, and after they do the repairs, I'll be submitting it to American Home Shield for a correct diagnosis.

The AC unit was freezing up and it was very easy to submit a claim to American Home Shield. The website was very friendly and the expectation for the contractors to come was within 24 hours or the next business day. The contractor was professional, quick, got his job done and was on his way. He went to the outside unit. He said it was clogged up and he put in a refrigerant. The repair fixed the problem immediately. One time, AHS gave me a company that was not local and it was gonna be two weeks for them to fix my air. That was not acceptable. You cannot live without air conditioning in Louisiana. Not only is it hot, but it's humid. That was the only time I was dissatisfied with AHS and I've recommended them a couple of times in the last couple of months.

I had two claims on the same day, about a washer machine issue and the air conditioning issue. One of the gaskets on the washer machine broke so it was leaking water out, and that claim worked out perfectly. The guy was able to come the next day and he actually had the parts so we were back up and running within the day. I was very impressed with that.
The air conditioning one, on the other hand, was an ongoing issue. The AC service contractor was good. But we had to go back and forth with the issue all the way back from the fall. We had been putting the compressor but that ended up being bad. The AC wasn't blowing cold enough and the contractor had to come back out. Then that whole situation got messy because American Home Shield wanted to bring in another company. They also tried to deny the claim even though it was a broken part. The first company messed us up and said it wasn't an issue with the previously replaced compressor. It was not entirely American Home Shield's fault. But the second opinion process needs a little revision. We had a problem getting a second company out to do another inspection. It took a lot more headache than it was worth.
I ended up calling the company that did the install directly. They worked with Home Shield and got it resolved very quickly. But when I tried to do it on my own, dealing with managers and phone calls, it took a week of trying to get somebody out to work with me on this. And anytime I had to call in and speak to a manager, it always took about 40 minutes to get somebody on the phone. So that was a little frustrating. The call-in definitely takes a long time compared to online. When I submit the claim online, it's fine. But when I have to call, the wait time is way too long sometimes. Submitting a simple claim is no big deal though. I just say I need them to come out and fix something.
Overall, with these last claims, everything was fine. That air conditioning issue was the only major issue I had. The appliances are also good and working now. Getting those repairs made were critical because we needed a working laundry machine to not go to a laundromat. Then it's also the middle of summer in North Carolina. I need the air conditioning working.

American Home Shield kinda encourages doing claims online. I do my claims that way and it seems to be easier. I tell them what my claim is and pay my deductible. That way, the service people won’t have to worry about collecting money on site and my wife doesn't have to deal with it. A contractor schedules a visit and they come in. We tell them this is the unit and this is what it’s like. It’s not cooling or not turning on. They take it from there.
I made a claim when the rear air conditioner was not cooling. The technicians that came out were nice people. They were on time and everything went great. They said that the compressor was not working correctly. They replaced the compressor and filled the back full of the liquid Freon. I paid for the Freon. We got one of those smart control things and I turned it on. Later that evening, the girls were telling me that the air conditioner was not cooling. I called Mr. Barnett back. They said, “That’s horrible. Let us come back and check it out.” They did that and apparently, the compressor was no good or just didn’t work for whatever reason. They said they have to order another compressor, and they did. It took about a week to get that part in. It was not a big deal and I thanked them for coming right back out.
They came back out and swapped the compressor out. They had to refill it with the Freon again. But at this point, something else wasn’t right. It was the reverse valve panel and the technicians worked on it. They couldn’t get the air conditioner running, going and cooling. They said they were gonna have Mr. Barnett come out and look at the problem because it was a reverse panel and they didn't have the part on their truck. I said that was not a problem and thanked them.
Mr. Barnett came out Sunday. We went through it and he was out there for quite a while. I was there with him and I was just trying to help and understand the best I could. At that point, there was a reverse valve part that they had to do which required something. They would have to cut something inside the unit and put something in it. Mr. Barnett said he had to get all that ordered and he did the best he could. It's been maybe five weeks that the air conditioner isn’t working. I texted their number asking if there were any news.
I’m not upset with the technicians nor with American Home Shield. Everyone’s doing what they can. It’s the time of the year where the air-conditioning business is super duper busy. I’m just kinda hoping that the problem is taken care of as soon as possible. Barnett has always done a super job. They come when they say they’re gonna come. They’re great people who are very honest. If anyone complains about American Home Shield or Barnett specifically, it’s all because they don’t understand the policy.
A long time ago, when I first started this, American Home Shield explained my policy to me. They told me what would happen if I have this and if I have that issue. It just made sense to me. American Home Shield can’t warranty every little thing under the sun. That would be ridiculous. I am so happy with American Home Shield. It’s probably the greatest investment I’ve ever had. I couldn’t be a bigger fan.

American Home Shield is one of the worst companies I've ever dealt with. Last summer my A/C unit broke while it was 100+ degrees that week (of course). A few months ago my water heater broke. Each time they gave me the runaround and I had to go back and forth with them and the company I was assigned to. When my A/C broke they said they wouldn't cover the cost of the new unit because the unit I had was made for a smaller condo and it is required that I get a unit that is made for the size of my condo. I'm not sure why this would fall on me considering I didn't choose the original unit (that was too small). They made me go back and forth multiple times and took forever to authorize the payment and work so the electrical company could replace it. We had to end up staying with a friend because it was so hot and our dog was starting to get lethargic
When my water heater broke the contractor told me it was broken and the whole thing needed to be replaced. Again, they took forever to authorize the payment and when they did they told me it would be $500. I said okay and then the plumbing company called me and said it would be $590. I said that AHS told me it was $500. So, again, I had to call back and forth multiple times. AHS told me they quoted me wrong so they would try and see if they could just charge me the $500. Then they came back and said the technician told them wrong so it was his fault and I would still have to pay $590. Every time I have dealt with AHS they are never sympathetic to the issue and never seem to be in a rush to help. My water heater was broken for a week which meant cold showers for a week.
Their call center is awful (I think it's based in India and their English is bad) and they are never helpful. I always get different information depending on who I talk to. Recently my garbage disposal broke too. They assigned me a company who never contacted me for an appointment. I tried calling them 3 times and I was on hold for over 10 minutes with no answer and no option to leave a voicemail each time. The first person I talked to at AHS told me to give them another hour and then call back if no one had contacted me. The second person at AHS told me they company has 24-48 hours to call me. I then asked for a supervisor because I was getting frustrated and getting different info from different people. She told me her supervisor was busy and put me on hold for over 10 minutes so I gave up and hung up. I figured she was just waiting for me to do so since she had no intention of letting me talk to a supervisor.
Then after 48 hours I called AHS again asking for another company to be assigned to me. They told me they would email the company and if I hadn't heard from them in an hour to call back. I told them that was not okay with me and they needed to assign me a new company now since that's the policy. After going back and forth and the customer service agent about this he finally gave me a new company. I called the new company, someone answered right away and I made an appointment, what a concept! Needless to say I have cancelled my membership and I can't wait to save $500+ per year and never have to deal with this terrible company ever again!
Good morning C G,
I understand your frustration in regard to the non covered cost to have the water heater replaced. I would be glad to speak with you to discuss your experience.

After playing phone tag for a week I was able to return speak to the AHS rep. I explained everything to her and she contacted the plumbing company to get the job finished. The plumbing company never showed up again and the AHS rep got the owner on the phone and he came out personally to see what needed to be finished and then said his guys would be back out the next day. We to make a long story short, his guys came back out and finished the job after almost a month of fighting with them. I really think AHS should not use this plumbing company in the future since it reflects so badly on them as a home warranty company. I am very satisfied with how the AHS rep help us solve the problem. AHS also needs to not out source their customer service to countries like India because the language barrier is a real pain. So I am changing my star ratings to 3 since the resolved the issue the best they could. A call Center here in the United States could have prevented 90% of our frustration.
Original Review: June 9, 2019
We had a issue with our water heater and AHS took the service request and we had a plumbing company out there within 24hr. The plumber let AHS know we need a new water heater and it was installed the next day, well that is 99% of the install was completed. The plumber said he need couple pieces to finish the install and would be back the next day to finish and haul away the old water heater but that was the last we heard from him and he never returned.
After a couple days we called AHS and they did absolutely nothing. The first customer service rep. hung up on me when I asked to speak to a supervisor and the second time I called they put me on hold and then said they were unable to help because the company wouldn’t answer their calls. I will be trying to call again and I pray this time I at least speak to someone that speaks English fluently but I suspect customer service office is in India. Ranger Holding LLC is the plumbing company that they sent out.
Good morning Henry,
I hate to hear about your American Home Shield experience and the level of service that you received. I would be glad to speak with you and address your concerns and get the water heater repaired.

The contactor in my AC unit had corrosion on it. I went online to submit a claim to American Home Shield and I found that their website navigation was good. I put in the request on a Saturday I got a call on the same day. Though their techs from Airmax Heating & Cooling weren't able to come until the Thursday after, they were good. They were able to get the corrosion off and everything worked out. My AC worked fine after that and I've had no problems so far. Everything was great with AHS.

The coolant in the AC stopped recently and I wasn’t getting any cool air within our house. The first time I made the claim, it was no problem. The second time when I had to do a recall, I had a problem ‘cause American Home Shield had no answer. The service was a total of a week. I was in a hot house with no air and I couldn’t reach anybody. The first time, the contractor came in late and I didn’t get service until 7:30, and about 30 minutes later, everything stopped working. The second time when they came out, the guy was very helpful and he explained everything to me.

My sump pump started running so I went down to my lower level and I had water in there 'cause the water was spraying out the back of my hot water heater. I called American Home Shield and they took care of it. The original company that they sent wasn't gonna be able to get to us for a week so we talked to them and they said that they would call AHS to see if AHS can get someone else to come out and they did that. Then the Siouxland Heating and Cooling called us an hour or two later. We talked to them and they set up and came out. They changed out the hot water heater. The service was great. They were awesome and got it taken care of the same day so the hot water just stopped for half a day. Overall, it's been pretty good.
Robert,
Thanks for letting us know everything worked out great on the Sump Pump request. Taking care of our customers is the main goal here at AHS and we are so glad that Siouland Heating and Cooling followed through. I am glad that your Water Heater is working. This is our second year with American Home Shield. We had it last year when we bought our house and we decided to renew it. It's a good policy and I think it's smart to have it. I just wish it was a little more professional. With the way that they communicated and their advertising, it's a premium product. They're there when you need them. But the truth is that it's very much of an automated system. When you get somebody on the phone, they're not a manager. They can never get the manager. Nobody has any control over anything and you end up being at the mercy of the system or the process. You just have to accept it for what it is.
The only thing that frustrated me, which is kind of a thing in general with American Home Shield, is that I feel like they need to do a better job of vetting their contractors. A lot of the contractors do good work and they're professional, but I don't like how they do what they wanna do because they feel like it's guaranteed work coming from American Home Shield and nobody's really gonna hold them accountable. That has happened to me more than once.
Our air conditioning unit was out for five days. Today isn't as hot, but it's been like 90-95 degrees every day. I had to have the same vendor come back out and do work on the same air conditioning unit that they had already serviced. I especially felt like our claim should have been a priority because it was a revisit. But they made us wait a week before they could get us on the schedule. The lady was telling me that a technician won't be in our area until Friday. I don't think that's appropriate to do business like that. I feel like with the way the calls come in, it should be based on the priority in general and not how far away it is from their home office.
I know Atlanta is a huge area and a lot of these companies will tell American Home Shield that they do all of Metro Atlanta. But then they do things where they say, "We don't do a lot of work in Alpharetta, so we're gonna make you wait five days before we're even gonna show up." When I got back to American Home Shield, they told me they don't really have any control over how their contractor schedule things. And it's not an emergency because I have air conditioning on one level. I just have it in our upstairs level. Sometimes it can be frustrating because the people you're talking to in American Home Shield don't really have any power or control to address your concerns. They just kinda tell you what's on their script.

The pilot light of my water heater wouldn't stay lit. The technician came out and said the water heater was 15 years old and that it was just going to last for eight years. Then the company called, said that American Home Shield was gonna replace the water heater, and I was totally up with that. I got a phone call from American Home Shield saying that they were going to replace the water heater and the only costs that weren't covered was the installation charges. A couple of days later, they replaced the water heater. It all took about a week.
I've been with American Home Shield for about two years now and they've been very good and real prompt. They were able to solve an issue with the refrigerator and then they got the air conditioning fixed. My only complaint was when our microwave broke and they couldn't repair it, but I never got any follow-up with American Home Shield. I just bought another one because the microwave was the least expensive on the list of appliances in my house. So, that was kind of frustrating. But other than that, American Home Shield has been fast and reliable when it comes to major ticket items.

My garbage disposal stopped working so I called American Home Shield and they sent a plumber from Aladdin. The garbage disposal was not good anymore. It was leaking water from below and it had to be changed. That's what the plumber did and he was done in about 10 minutes. He was very competent and good at his job.
I've been with American Home Shield for more than 20 years and surprisingly, when I submitted my claim this time, it was very easy. The process of me filing the claim and them scheduling the person to repair was very fast. A year ago, I submitted a claim for the air conditioning as it wasn't cooling enough. AHS kept sending the same company, and always the same problem. It took three or four times for them to come back and try to fix it. And finally, I gave up. But this time, the experience was very good. I am very satisfied. They raised their service call price, but I'm planning to stay with them nonetheless.

I had a garbage disposal that went bad, and they’re gonna replace it here in the next couple of days. The contractors were great, friendly and professional. We weren’t getting full cool air coming in from our AC unit. We called AHS to submit a claim and it was a pretty easy process. I prefer to file my claims with them on the phone. Automated services are always a pain to get through to people, but I think that’s for every company, so it’s all good. Their reps are friendly, easy to work with, and they usually get things accomplished within 24 hours. For our AC problem, A&R Complete Service came out and fixed it. Other than that, I’ve only had one experience with AHS in the last five years where I did not like the contractor. When I called back to Home Shield about it, they apologized and said they would make a note of my account not to ever recommend that company for me again.

I've used American Home Shield for about 4 years and filing a claim has been easy. I had one light that was flickering. When the contractor came out, he said it was the bulb and not the fixture that was defective. We also had a doorbell that was not ringing properly. We had installed a ring doorbell and it wasn’t capturing the signal so he addressed that. He said that it was the wire doorbell that had broken so we replaced it. I have a current claim coming in because the garage door is not closing. When you hit the button, it keeps coming back up so they have somebody coming out fairly quickly from the local community. However, the contractors contracted with American Home Shield could expand the service hours. They’re not allowed to come on the weekends.

We had a clogged drain and it was backed up in the bathroom. We called AHS to come out but it took so many phone calls and there was so much drama. The techs went under the house and there was water there. So, it became a big thing that we had to have that water pumped out because they said that was dangerous for them to go under there. Then they noticed that raccoons had been living in there, so we had to get an animal trapper person to come out and trap that. It cost another $1,000 and all that was supposedly for their safety. But the crazy part was we went back and forth for with them for months and in the mean time, I was without water and I could not use the water for two months almost.
My parents were the landlords of the house, so I was running back and forth to their house because they live on the side of me. I’m sure that as landlords, my parents could put me in a hotel but I was not gonna jeopardize them too like that when this was a job that they were paying insurance every month for. At any rate, we went off the insurance and did the repair on our own with another plumber. They did nothing under the ground but they went up to the roof, came down, and unclogged all our drains. I couldn't believe it.
At that point, we were gonna discontinue American Home Shield for the stress. I was extremely irate with the frustration and inconvenience. So, now the house is nice because we had someone come pump out the water and if there were any raccoons living under there, we had all that taken care of. But for us to pay $3,000 out of our insurance to have someone else come in and go straight through the roof, go down to the main pipe, and was done within an hour or two, was crazy.
But we tried to use AHS again recently when the belt was broken on the dryer and this time everything went smoothly. It was very easy to submit the claim and they sent AAA Appliance for the repair. The tech who came out, Mario, is a regular one that comes for some of the calls for that and we don't usually have an issue with him. But after all that happened and talking to other people from whom I heard other bad complaints, I’m surprised my parents still have the home insurance and didn’t change. So, we still have AHS but I wouldn’t recommend them at all.
Tina,

I tried to submit the claim online for a dishwasher door that would not open. Eventually I called because I wanted to tell American Home Shield that I wasn't home all the time, give them instructions for how to let me know and get home 10 minutes before the repairman. In these days right now, if you can talk to a human being, it's all pretty good. But when they're kind on top of it and listen to you, then it's very good. And that's what they did.
The contractor came on Memorial Day. When American Home Shield called me, I told them it was not urgent and asked them why were they making him come on Memorial Day. The rep said he works on Memorial Day. But when he came and looked at it, he realized that he had to order a part. He had come from way west. So, I kinda told him, "I'm sorry. I could have sent you a picture of it or something, what was wrong with what." He was fine with it but I just felt bad that he had to come on his day off.
We waited for about 4 days for the part and once he came back, he was very professional. He knew right what to do. He went in and unscrewed the old one. He apologized that he couldn't get a white handle to match, but you don't even see it. I told him I didn't even care as long as the dishwasher door was easy to open and close. He was very kind.
I've been telling everyone lately that I have been very happy overall about having the service from American Home Shield because. It has saved me so much money. There was a time when I called them out for the garage door and the guy came out and couldn't do anything, but he charged me $60 of service fee just to drive out. So, when I call now, I ask, "What if it doesn't get fixed?" They put a supervisor on, and the supervisor says, "You should never have to give them any money." It's always through them. So, I learned my lesson.

We have had American Home Shield for 18 years. When we first had the contract the service and contractors they sent out were good and honest. Over the last five years the companies they sent out have for the majority been a lower quality. This is the third very disturbing issue we have had with American Home Shield and will be our last if they cannot rectify the issue. We have always replaced everything when needed and maintained our appliances and equipment. Our dishwasher stopped running we called they sent out a very nice man who I have to say has nothing to do with this review. Apparently the board is out and the fuse is not correct. The only companies that have touched the dishwasher were ones American Home Shield sent out.
Now they are saying that the fuse was an off market fuse and it’s not covered. My husband and I have never touched or opened the dishwasher other to load dishes. That is why we have paid them for 18 years because we could call and paid and they handled it. However implying that we changed a fuse and board is ridiculous, to not cover an item, of someone who has been loyal customer for years despite the decrease in quality. We have filed a complaint and will push it as far as necessary as needed because it is not ok to not monitor the companies you are sending to homes and then blame the homeowners for the shabby products those companies put into the homeowners appliances/equipment. It is truly sad that the integrity of contractors sent out and the companies sending them out is so poor.
Your patronage to American Home Shield over the past 18 years is more than appreciated. Your concerns are understood regarding the denial of the dishwasher repairs. I would be glad to speak with you and get the issues resolved.

Updated on 06/20/2019: I want to follow up on my previous review of AHS’s home warranty service. Spoiler: it didn’t get better. After finally getting the issue resolved, AHS had a “social media manager” call me to ask about my experience since I left a review on this site. I spoke to her in detail about the poor experience I had dealing with AHS and the contractor they hired for the job. I told her about my experience with AHS’s customer service reps, their prevarication, their blame shifting, their slavish obedience to corporate policies that fly in the face of empathy towards the actual humans paying then for their service. It fell on deaf ears.
She asked if my A/C had been repaired. It had (after 9 calls, two technicians, and 5 days), so she said service had been rendered within the boundaries of their company policies. I told her perhaps, then, AHS should reconsider policies which could leave a customer so unhappy. AHS has permanently lost my business. In the end, the social media manager’s call was a hollow attempt at damage control - absolutely meaningless. She never once offered a solution, but rather more banal corporate platitudes meant to placate a dissatisfied customer. Yet another experience to lessen my opinion of AHS.
Original Review: My A/C unit failed during a Central Texas early summer. It's hot. AHS contracted a local company to repair the issue. Firstly, I had to wait 4 days for an appointment. Okay, they're busy, I understand. Then, when the repairman came out, he didn't have the common part to fix the issue. How do I know it's common? The repairman told me it was.
So, I contacted AHS to find another contractor to fix the problem. They said they were unable to transfer the work order until they were able to get the diagnosis from the contractor who failed to fix it. At this point, my options are to wait another 2 days for a fix or for AHS to get the diagnosis from the failed contractor. Rock and a hard place... I then requested a refund and was met with corporate customer service gobbledygook that had nothing to do with my refund request. Bad customer service plus asinine corporate policies equal nightmare experience. I'd avoid AHS if I were you.
I hate to hear about your experience with American Home Shield and the issues that you experienced to have the air conditioner system repaired. I would be glad to speak with you and reach a resolution.

I have been a customer for 9 years. Service was decent in Italy but declined in the last 5 year's. Every summer for the last 5 years my A/C goes out. I live in Central Florida where the heat index can exceed 100 degree daily. I can say I have went without air for at least 1 week for the last 5 year's. They contract with Total Air Care that runs a call center where hold times can exceed 40 minutes. Currently I have not had air since May 14th and today is June 7th. They bandaid the problem so they don't have to replace the unit. Freon is only paid at 10 bucks a pound and going rate is 3 times that. So bank on paying your service fee of 75.00 (that is promised to be raised in a few years, it was 50 initially) plus any Freon added plus fine print.
I have been given the run around by American Home Shield as well as Total Air. Wasted countless hours on hold since May 14th. It's 82 degrees in my house and neither one of these companies care I have 2 kids and 1 dog in this heat. It's unfair and should be illegal for them to leave you in those kinds of conditions for almost a MONTH now. Frustration does not even begin to cover all the stress, heat, inability to cook as it makes the home warmer, laundry is done at night when it's only 80 degrees in the house.
They should be required to do these repairs within a reasonable amount of time and not act like it's no big deal and they understand my frustration. NO you are in an air conditioned office. You can't begin to understand all the hardships this has put me. After calling relentlessly between the 2 companies and AHS approval department. I spoke with a gentleman that was very dry and acted bothered he even took my call. It's Friday. The soonest they can come out is Tuesday so another 90 degree weekend with no AC. My advise is RUN. BUYER BEWARE!!!! They will NEVER REPLACE your Central a/c unit so buckle up for a long hot ride.
I apologize for the way we've handled your claim Stacey.I just sent you an in an effort to resolve your issue. I look forward to assisting you.

But the issue with my dryer is that the drum wasn’t turning, and the gentleman who came to fix it said that there was a piece that I needed that he did not carry on his truck, and they were going to order it. I haven’t heard from them and it’ll be a week tomorrow in following up about getting the dryer fixed. Nonetheless, they took their junk with them and they left, so it was no problem. Myers did a great job with the leak that I had. It didn't take very long at all for them to come out. As a matter of fact, the young lady who helped me was extremely helpful. It is a very good company. They were very responsive, prompt and very professional, and they took care of the problem. But initially, the person at American Home Shield had told me a different contractor would be at my house that Saturday morning, between 7:30 and 9:00. I set up a time for his visit but at about 10 minutes to 11:00, I still had not heard from him nor had he come to my house. So I called to ask him what time he was going to be there. He proceeded to tell me that he had had problems with his truck the day before and I understand that. Things happen but when I asked him when he was gonna call and let me know that he wasn't coming, he got very upset with me.
A reasonable person would have called. He said he didn't get home until 10:00 that night and he thought it was too late to call me. It wouldn't have been too late for him to call me. But if that's how he felt, I understood that too. Why didn't he call me that morning to tell me he wasn't coming though? I asked him that and he got angry with me. I called American Home Shield to report it and asked them if they could send someone else but they felt like they had to send the same contractor. I told them that the guy was very upset with me and I would rather not have him come to my house to do any repairs. I ended up talking to the one person and then another person, and they were able to straighten it out.
But I had never called American Home Shield and asked them to change a contractor before. I've had American Home Shield for many years and I've always had a great experience with them. So I was a little disappointed that they took me through that. It probably took me an hour and a half on the phone to get it straightened out. They even told me they had to hang up, although they called me back.
That contractor apparently told them they would call me that night between 6:00 and 8:00 and tell me when they could come. But what sense would that make that night? I'm still puzzled by his thought process. A reasonable person would have thought to call their first appointment that day when they got the next morning. Plus we have cellphones. They could have called me in the car on their way to the appointment that they were gonna go to. If I had left, I'm sure American Home Shield would've charged me for whatever the cost was of that person to come to my house. So if they tell me they're coming, I'm not leaving until they come. American Home Shield has done a great job. It was just that little thing.

I had another appointment earlier in May and my son had to go into the hospital. I canceled straight away with AC Wizard and then, I called at some time. I canceled that because the $75 fee was taken out and I have not received that back yet. Everything else has been positive.

My AC was leaking water which was pooling up in the pan. Then it was leaking out of the pan and onto our floors. I filed a claim with American Home Shield and I got a confirmation email and a call from the contractor shortly thereafter. In two business days, the contractor came and he was able to explain to me what was going on. He was stellar and I was impressed with him.

American Home Shield is fine. It just doesn’t cover enough. The air conditioning has gone out at our house and they handled a small part of the air handler. It didn’t use to be that way. Everybody’s cutting everything and if you’re gonna have to pay for everything anyway, there’s no need of having American Home Shield. We became members of American Home Shield 10 years ago and I haven’t had them that much because it wasn’t appropriate for them to send anybody or the issue wasn’t covered. They need to get more things to be covered for all kinds of people. Young people don’t mind but we're senior citizens and we really depend on American Home Shield for a lot of repair. We’re not getting that much on the help and I doubt if we will renew it. Another thing is that business of the time that you have to stay on the phone to even file a claim. It's really frustrating when you get there and then you have to wait for an hour.

My refrigerator iced up and there’s clonking noise in my washer. We got Accord Appliance and they were wonderful and efficient. They follow up with their work orders too. They put in a part (it had to be ordered) and it’s all done, which is how fast everything is. American Home Shield should keep Accord Appliance if they can. They have to keep all the good subcontractors.

United Air Temp came out and fixed my air conditioning. There was no cold air coming out of it. When I submitted the claim, I didn’t have any problems with the website. It was user-friendly. Everything was really great. The only problem I had was when I received the text telling me who had been assigned and gave me the phone number. When I called that phone number, there was no identification and no answer. They wanted me to put in my area code then they would tell me that my area code was not in their service area. So, I became very worried and tried to call American Home Shield back. I talked to somebody who basically said she couldn’t help me. I got a call within an hour and I don’t know if she had anything to do with that or not but the contractor was great. American Home Shield is worth every penny.

As far as scheduling for claims, I prefer doing it online. There were one or two claims that didn't pan out the way they should’ve. But our most recent claim with American Home Shield was for the pool pump and it has been fine so far. It had stopped working and when the technician looked at the description I had written, he said it was gonna be one of two things. It was either the motor or the capacitor that had burned out. He looked at it and not two minutes later, he said the capacitor was gone. Then he went to his truck and got a new one. He put it back on and we were up and running in five minutes.

I've been using American Home Shield for a long time and I have recommended them to so many people. I got two properties with them. Recently, the AC was low on Freon and United Air filled the Freon up. They said it would take the technician 24 hours to come out but I was not available on that day then it pushed to 48 hours. They eventually came up to 72 because the day when I wanted them to come, they said they didn't have availability so they came the day after. The work that they did was fine but they tried to upsell on some other stuff. I've seen it multiple times. They recommended me to replace the unit which I need to talk to American Home Shield about.

They knew what they were doing and they got it done quickly. I've been happy with American Home Shield over the years.

Our AC unit wasn’t working and it was very frustrating to submit a claim with American Home Shield. I called them and their rep couldn't understand what I was trying to say and then there was a delay. It took an additional five days for the heating and air company to come out and fix it. But when they showed up, they were phenomenal. The first time they came, they put Freon in the unit and they backed that for 60 days. They were really good about the situation. The technician was extremely helpful and he even put covers over his shoes when he came in the house. He also said that they would come right back out if there would be an issue. Prior to getting the AC done, it was 100 degrees outside and it was 85 in the house. And they went above and beyond. They fixed our problem and made sure we were completely happy before they left. I would recommend them.

Our air conditioning unit wasn’t cooling enough because there was not enough Freon, and the contractor that was sent by American Home Shield added a little bit of Freon. Plus, the unit was kind of little dusty, so they washed it and then they added something on it. I submitted that claim online, and then they cancelled that one because that was a different company and they didn’t want to come until June 5. So, I called American Home Shield back, and they called another company who was able to come the next day. They were very professional, too.
Everything is fine now. I was kind of affected before because I submitted a claim online, and then I had to call these people. They said they are not available for six days. How come American Home Shield doesn’t have anybody who can come within 24 to 48 hours? I’ve been paying for American Shield every single month for a few years. And now, I need American Home Shield, and they said, “Oh, people are not available for five, six days.” And I am without AC and in the heat. So, I told them that it isn't fair that I’ve been paying for the last four years and never had any issue with my equipment. I was upset and I called American Home Shield. And they handled it very nicely. I am happy.

We’ve used American Home Shield for a lot of things for this house and I would recommend it. We had a plumbing issue under our garden tub and American Home Shield contacted us right away on who the plumber would be. The plumber also did a great job. There was a pinhole leak where the copper wire connects and he was here for almost four hours getting it taken care of. He was also professional and nice. He cleaned up after himself and gave us information on where to get tile. We were looking for that because it’s hard to match a 13-year-old tile. Everything worked out. There is no leak now and we found the tile.
American Home Shield also covered my oven but the only person who would work on it was in Chino Valley and they didn’t wanna deal with American Home Shield because they would have to stay on hold for so long. I told them I would pay them and then I would be on the phone with American Home Shield for them. I gave American Home Shield all the numbers that a plumber guy normally would give them and at the end of the conversation, they thought I was the plumber’s office. I said no. It was just that we went through three local people to get our oven fixed.
We live in Prescott, Arizona but a lot of the people who come and work on our house come from Phoenix. So it's like a two-hour drive, which is a little inconvenient. When you wanna get service from anything, it’s hard to find qualified people up here to do it. This is like a big retirement area. But Prescott Valley, which is right next to us, is growing so fast and there is a lack of doctors and professional people, even painters and contractors. When we were living closer to Tacoma, everything was great, as far as service and finding people who were qualified to do things. But I’m glad American Home Shield now has a plumber that they contracted out with here in Prescott. That makes it easier. They’re gonna have to get more like Pruitt's Plumbing but luckily, they came on board.

The water's still leaking down my wall and it's been going on for 4 weeks now. The contractors are blaming each other on whose fault it is. The AC people said that it's the plumbing people but the plumbing people said that it's the AC people. The plumber was gonna keep making a bigger hole in my sheetrock every time he kept trying to see exactly where the pipe is leaking from. I told him that the AC guy already took film of it. He told me that nobody's doing sheetrock repairs in Corpus 'cause they locked the contract. I told him he doesn't work for American Home Shield so I don't care what he has got to say. He told me, "If American Home Shield told me that they're gonna fix the sheetrock, then that's what I'm gonna go on."

I wish I could give negative stars, since this company has been unethical in its practice during my first service experience itself. We noticed that the ice maker of the refrigerator wasn't vending water or ice, as well as the refrigerator was making noise. Hence we placed a service request (5/31/19) to have both the issues fixed. The contractor assigned to us was SOS services, and when he came to do the service, he fixed the noise issue by replacing the motor fan. For ice maker, he indicated the refrigerator ice maker door needs to be replaced since it is a common issue with GE refrigerators. He told us he will get the part, work with AHS for authorization and replace it.
Here is where things will start to go from "Good" to being "Awful". The service status was marked as "Waiting for parts" by the contractor, and suddenly after 4 days (6/3/19) he closed the service as "Job Done". Surprised, we tried to call the contractor to understand what was going on, but he wouldn't pick our calls or return our voicemail. We called AHS customer service (seemed it was outsourced outside of US). The representative listened to what we said, and she tried to contact the contractor, but the contractor didn't pick up. The representative indicated AHS will send email to contractor to respond to us in 1 day.
The day passed without contractor calling us, and hence we called AHS customer service again next day (6/4/19) - the representative listened to what we said, and suddenly the call was disconnected. We had to call again, and the new representative tried to make similar failed attempt to contact the contractor, and indicated that she will escalate to contractor relations, assuring someone will call us next day.
The day passed again without anyone calling us. We called AHS customer service again (6/5/19), and now the representative said after contacting the contractor, the contractor informed her that the part was denied to be covered since the ice maker has some malfunctioning not related to normal wear and tear, and I need to pay $1000 to contractor to have it serviced. On my request, she had me connect to contractor (since he was happily ignoring our calls and voicemails). The moment the contractor heard my name, he disconnected. This clearly indicates lack of professionalism and unethical from the contractor.
Furious, I called AHS again asking to assign me another contractor. This new representative was worst customer representative I ever experienced. She first indicated service is done and second opinion is not possible, then after a while indicated the service is still pending until 5 more days, so she cannot do second opinion. Which statement is true? I asked to talk to her supervisor, but she lied that her manager is on different call. So she would keep on telling one of these lies, as I tried to persuade that we don't trust the contractor and we genuinely need some different contractor to come since we use the refrigerator in normal way, and its not vending ice is "normal wear and tear".
After trying to negotiate for more than 30 minutes, we thought to call later. An hour later, we called AHS again and the person couldn't see any prior actions like contacting contractor relations in history. He indicated the same stuff about the part cannot be covered due to "not normal wear and tear". We asked if he had report from contractor that has the details, and surprisingly he didn't have it. We argued that if he doesn't have the report, and contractor told us the opposite i.e. "normal wear and tear", where was the proof that this cannot be covered? After insisting several times for new contractor, he said he will open a request with the account team, and gave us confirmation number.
Next day, as usual, nothing happened. So we called again (6/6/19), and ask status of the confirmation number. Surprisingly, there was no such number in their system. So who lied to us? The representative who gave us the number, or the new one. This new one went on same lies of busy supervisor, closed case, and reopened the prior closed case. Which means SOS service is obliged to visit us and re-evaluate. Another day passed, nothing from the contractor in spite of 24 hr window passing for him to contact us. We were contacted today (6/7/19) by a Service Resolution Specialist (not disclosing name for privacy) by email citing she will work with us on resolving. I replied on my availability but never got any call back.
So as you can see from the history above:
1. Different AHS representatives told us different things i.e. inconsistent answers.2. Clear indication of false promises or lies.
3. Favoritism to contractors, even though they were not doing the right thing.
We are tired of this company in just first service request, and are thinking of canceling the service and move to different home warranty.

They can't get me a supervisor this time to talk to. Contractor just texted me back and said he can't fit me in till sometime next week and I should get someone else. Supervisors are useless and no one seems to care or be concerned. But, they would be concerned if I didn't pay the monthly bill. Totally unacceptable! Without air for three weeks and no one will say anything other than someone will follow up and call you. To this day no call or follow up and no air. Every time I talk to AHS they say they will email contractor relations and that is all they can do. 6/7/2019.

AHS uses poorly rated companies to come to your house. I had a plumber come out for a back up issue and the guy just kept saying "yeah something is wrong." Uhhhhh, okay? Yes we know something is wrong that is why we called. Then he says he can't find the issue with our plumbing and he put a snake into our lines and said he got "200 feet in and it didn't have a problem" (later to find out by an actual company that knows what they are doing that he was putting the snake into our septic tank, when he thought that was the main line). Sounds contradicting right? THEN I get a call from AHS that they were told there was roots in our lines and that wouldn't be covered. WHAT? Since when were there roots in my lines?
The guy left and said he did not know was wrong and we would have to pay $500 to have ours camera'd and that wasn't covered by AHS. We called Roto-Rooter and had our issue resolved the same day. So thanks for wasting my $100. THEN we have an issue with our AC and the company that was sent out has a 1 star review on Google and automatically my heart sunk. Not again... The guy comes out and says nothing is wrong with our AC, although it is set at 72 degrees and its 81 degrees in my house and our smart thermostat is giving us a warning that something is wrong with our cooling system.
The guy said it's because it's hot out, our response was "well we have lived in other houses in the same weather conditions and did not have this problem nor did we have this issue last summer", his response "well every house is different, let me go grab my paperwork"... Ummm okay? So yet again another $100 down the drain. I'm sure these people are getting paid no matter what, if they find an issue or not so they don't care. I just want my money's worth and I am not getting it with this home warranty.
I can understand your frustration with trying to get your plumbing and a/c issues resolved. I just sent you an email as I would like to contact you in an effort to assist with unresolved issues.

I have contacted American Home Shield at least 10 times and I can not get them to replace this unit. It has been over a MONTH and they can not resolve anything. Customer service 80% of the time DOES NOT SPEAK ENGLISH. They have memorized 5 questions and that is it. If you ask them for anything not on their script they can NOT answer. Pitiful company!

Waste of time. We took out the policy 8 months ago. We had to make our first claim due to a blocked drain in the bath. A plumber came and couldn't fix it, then we had to endure days of repeated calls, misinformation, having to call back because no-one ever called back when they said they would. Only to be told after two weeks the blockage wasn't covered. So we wanted our money on a policy that doesn't even cover a blocked drain. My advice - find another company that knows what it's doing, has staff who give a damn, and who know their jobs, and don't waste your money with these people.
I hate to hear the warranty has not been beneficial to you. I just sent you an email as I would like to assist with unresolved AHS issues. I look forward to assisting you.

Had AHS send a air conditioning co out in Sept to fix my A/C. Took them 4 trips to fix it. Now in June it's still not working. Called AHS to send someone out. They came and the problem was the first company overcharged the unit causing it to overheat and shut down and AHS charged me again for the first company's mistake. They are a very poor company and would not recommend AHS to anyone.

AHS Charged my credit card $75 for a repair that was never performed or requested. It took 90 minutes before I spoke to person #4 that spoke English and could help me get the charge refunded. The experience was so disappointing I canceled my contract, which I was planning to do anyways since the service was so bad. Then they charged my credit card again for a cancellation fee of $71.16. I'll take the loss and never deal with the company again.
Tomas,
I am sorry that we were not able to offer a resolution that you were pleased with while the contract was active. We hope this experience does not deter you from considering AHS in the future for your home warranty needs.

We bought our condo just under a year ago and American Home Shield was given to us as a gift from our realtor. We didn't have to use them until a couple of weeks ago when our dishwasher started leaking and not draining water. The technician came out and said they fixed it. Less than a week later the same problem. We called AHS back to get a second technician out requesting someone else. We were OK with having to pay the $75 fee a second time as it would have been a different technician. But it was not. It was the same technician with a different phone number on file with AHS. This as with reading other reviews with similar things happening and having to drag out repairs convinced us to cancel the call and cancel the policy to avoid any headaches.

With a full warranty and after 7 days of trying to get AHS to resolve a quickly failing a/c system, it froze over and failed today. Days ago, AHS technician reported to AHS that the system was failing. AHS required a second opinion before it could do anything further. Second opinion company arrived two days ago, inspected and failed to reassemble the unit properly--which cause it to freeze over and throw the circuit breaker. As of this morning, the unit has failed completely and is frozen over. We live in a condo, in FL with 90+ heat today, an elderly parent with a lung condition, and no way to open windows or install a portable a/c. AHS is telling us that they can't do anything until the second opinion company submits their report. Second opinion company says they submitted it to AHS two days ago.
In the year since we got AHS warranty, we've often had little to no response from them. After months of trying, they finally said that someone from AHS gave them the wrong phone number for us to call! They were apologetic but we don't pay for apologies. We pay for service, which has been very poor. It looks as if we have no a/c and no way to resolve this. We are suffering with no a/c and we are not responsible for AHS issues with another company? This is horrible service!
Hi Carol,
I understand your concerns regarding your most recent air conditioner service claim and the delay. I would be glad to speak with you and get the issues resolved.

I told him that was unacceptable and told him to just cancel my service request and I would fix it my self which I did. I also told the rep to refund my 75.00 service call which he DID NOT. After 45 min on hold we were told a refund would take 45 days to return my money. Honestly I would not hire AHS to insure a 10 dollar used lawn mower. I placed a service call with AHS for my water heater. I paid $ 100.00 for the service fee. AHS called J&K Plumbing to look at the water heater. After 3 days J&K Plumbing called and said they will on site in 3 days to look at the water heater and diagnose the problem. Plumbing company took about half an hour to diagnose the problem and said that they will have to replace the water heater and will contact and email the report AHS. After 2 more days J&K Plumbing sent the report to AHS. AHS personnel finally called me in the night and said that the repair is not covered since it is a preexisting condition and that it has occurred two months ago. It took over 8 days and 8 days without hot water for AHS to notify me that repair will not be covered since it is a pre-existing condition. I called Home Depot to get me a new water heater and they will install on the same day!

They were awesome. The person that they sent to us was very nice, down-to-earth and a country guy like us. He fixed it the very first time he came out and he didn’t have to order parts. The house seemed to be cooler and the AC doesn’t seem to be cutting on and off as much.

It’s very easy to make claims at American Home Shield. Just go online, select what the problem is and they take a payment off my credit card. Then, I get an email notifying me who the service people would be, and within about 24 hours, they call and schedule an appointment. Recently my dryer was making a lot of noise, and a motor was replaced. Gimino's had to order a new part, and then come back and install it. They came when they said they were going to, diagnosed the problem and followed up when they had the part ordered.

The stuff in my freezer wasn't freezing and it wasn't making ice. On the refrigerator side, stuff wasn't getting cold either. Submitting a claim to American Home Shield is easy. However, I can never call on the phone to ask a question about my claim or put it a claim but ask a question about it because their system is automated. Not everybody has their hands on a computer right away. With AHS, there's nobody to talk to.
Also, I had service one time from somebody who was working on the refrigerator and he wasn't very polite. He was not customer service like. Still, the last refrigerator guy I had was great. He was very knowledgeable about what's going on. He cleaned up everything when he was done. He was awesome. Additionally, the last guy who came for my microwave was great too. AHS' contractors deal with me. They work around my schedule to make sure I am up and running.

I most recently submitted a claim to American Home Shield for a refrigerator that was not working. I went online and submitting the claim was very easy. Then, I got a text that someone was on their way. It has the name of the company that was gonna come. The guy that came out was okay but I don't think he was very careful. He was taking stuff out of the refrigerator and he was going very fast. Some of the cold air still is not coming out in some parts but it’s coming out in another part that was never there before. He made a little incision to get some cold air coming out through another way.
This is the eighth time that the same problem has been fixed. I think that the people that are trying to fix it are under pressure to fix it, or else you get something new. After so many times of fixing the same problem, they just keep trying to patch it up. And sometimes, the problem will happen four months after. They would have to come back and try and fix the problem again. It’s like a Band-Aid for the main thing. Other than that, American Home Shield is good if you need help finding someone to come and fix things.

They told me that their contractor would contact me and sent me an email. On the Monday after, I was contacted by the person that would do the maintenance on my AC. The tech from Rescue Your Air called me before he came and told me he was on his way. He met me at my place and he diagnosed the problem. Rescue Your Air then called me and gave me an appointment t come back and fix it.
He was gonna come out the next day to fix the air but it didn’t work with my work schedule. I work Monday through Friday and their last time is 5:00. So, I called to see if I can get an appointment for Saturday. Their rep gave it to me and I really appreciated that. Overall, working with AHS was a great experience. My daughter put a claim for it with American Home Shield on a Friday and Affordable Comfort and Construction came out Saturday morning. The men the came here were very nice. I have no knowledge on air conditioner. And they answered all my questions and they were very good.
I was very happy with the timeliness, calling me back the very next day. The only part that was very difficult was waiting on the compressor to come in. The contractors had to order it, then they had to confirm it with AHS. I also couldn't believe that it was $520 to put Freon in there. That’s a bit too much. I've been paying on it for at least 20 years with American Home Shield plus the $75 fee for the guys to come out. It was exorbitant. But you have to have Freon. Of course, what's the use of changing out the compressor if I can't be cool? They told me about it and they told me how much it was gonna cost and asked me to pay for it before they change out the compressor. But they were nice about it.
Good afternoon Dana,

One of my air-conditioners was out. Submitting a claim over the phone for its repair to American Home Shield was easy but then I had to wait over a week in the heat before anybody came out. That was a long time when it was 90-something degrees. With their contractor, I never spoke to anybody on the phone. Instead, I got text messages saying that they would set up an appointment as soon as they could. I just got a message thereafter saying that they were coming a such a day at such a time. They never asked if it was a good time for me. It seemed a little impersonal for me. If I was gonna have to wait a whole week, it would have been nice to have at least have a voice that I could have talked to.
Nevertheless, the tech they sent was great. He didn’t take very long at all. We just had to have Freon replaced and he couldn’t have been nicer. However, AHS only paid $10 per pound of freon of the $90 per pound that we were charged. They could do better than that. Still, the air-conditioner has been fine since the repair.

Mainline Plumbing came out as a result of a pre-service tune-up that I elected to have 'cause American Home Shield was on a promotion. During the tune-up, Quality Air came and determined that a capacitor was needed. They had tested the air conditioner and determined what I needed to do. But when I went to cut on my air a few days later 'cause it had gotten really hot, the unit didn't come on at all. So, I had called them back because I didn't know why it wasn't coming on, and no one ever got back to me. It was definitely working when they came for the tune-up. When I placed the second service call for the capacitor, Mainline came out and they made that repair. They were great. They replaced the capacitor and they determined that a fuse was blown. They saw the fuse when they went inside the unit 'cause it wasn't coming on, and they replaced the fuse. So, that was good.
I don't have any difficulty with submitting the claims but I had difficulty now getting American Home Shield on the phone. They've grown a lot and it seems as though they haven't mastered handling the growth as far as getting back to the customers when there is a problem. They should get back to the customers in a better timeframe and don't have them on hold as long. Even the payment system is different. Now, they don't take any payments when they come out to your home which is fine. But a couple of times, the service was postponed for whatever reason and they took payment before service was completed. So that was an issue. That was resolved but it took some time, a lot of calls, and a lot of time on hold while I was at work. But they've been good as far as repairing or replacing items.

I originally submitted the ticket verbally but the guy kept telling me it was the pool pump. Then when I saw that they had done the ticket wrong, I tried to find a way to correct it online but I couldn't. So I called but every time I called, I got somebody who doesn't speak good English. If they can't speak or understand good English, how was I supposed to make them understand? They never got it right and I quit trying. And the guy who comes in to fix it has been here three different times doing three different things.
The contractor has been super nice until he sent me a nasty email the other day saying, "You people need to stop this." He said I needed to quit turning in a ticket for the pool pump but I'm not turning in a ticket for the pool pump. He was not happy with me at all because he's showing a closed ticket on the pool pump because there was never anything wrong with it. It's the heater. Apparently, they're giving him grief. But I've sent him a message back. I told him that I have tried multiple times. He didn't respond but I did get a message from American Home Shield telling me that he was coming today. I have three issues going on in the house right now. The garage door button sometimes works and sometimes, it doesn’t. You have to push it ten different times in different places. We were also having trouble with the garage door not going up. It would go about three feet and go back down, go up three feet then back down. So Smokey’s Garage Door came out and he found out that there was a piece inside the motor that should be round but was not. It was kind of oblong, like it had been had been hit over time or wasn’t set quite right. He fixed that then he told me that the rollers that go up and down the track should be changed about every five years. I told him that those were way over five years old and it had always been a noisy garage door. So we had it go up and down then he said new rollers could be put on.
He said that when they do a service call, it’s $95 to come out for Smokey’s and then it would be $10 per roller but since we had already paid our American Home Shield $75 fee, they would waive the $95 and just charge $10 per roller. He said his would be silicone and then there will a lifetime guarantee on them. So I decided to go ahead and do it and the garage door is much quieter now.
However, they could not fix the button because it's not covered by American Home Shield. So he told me that I could take a picture of it and then go on to Amazon and find a similar one. There were these two wires in the back and he told me to unscrew it, change the two wires and have a brand-new garage door opener. I don’t know if the garage door opener was taken out of the coverage. But I always thought it was covered and it’s not covered anymore. But if American Home Shield does change what is covered, that should be in bold in the the first part of our new contract every year.
They’re also hard to get ahold of by phone. Doing everything online is very easy but I had to call them by phone for my air conditioner. I was doing this order by phone and you could punch certain buttons to say certain things. Then something I said triggered the automatic system to send me to a person. But I never had the option to talk to a person. I have also been hearing some bad things about American Home Shield lately so I might investigate other home warranty people. But I've had them for 15 years now and overall, I've been satisfied with them. I have recommended them to several of my coworkers and my son has signed up with them as well.

I find it easy to submit a claim with American Home Shield. I’ve been doing them over the phone and the representatives have been very competent. They didn’t drag their feet getting me some answers. They were on it. A gentleman came out to do the spring checkup for the AC and that went well. But then with this follow-up one, I got a little upset because I thought they should’ve caught the issue with the spring checkup.
The compressor on our outside central air unit was not kicking on. The fan was running but the compressor wouldn’t kick on. There were three parts that the technician had to replace and one was a leak that let the Freon out so we didn’t have any cool air. That may not have been part of what was supposed to be covered in the checkup but it cost me $250 to replace the Freon. I talked to the lady at Freedom Heating and Cooling and asked if that would’ve been covered under the prior person that had just been out. She didn’t know but she encouraged me to contact the provider for our home policy.
This is our first time with a home warranty and I realized the value of it. If I had to renew our home policy, I would, only because I really need it for big things that go wrong. I just wished they could’ve helped me more with the Freon. American Home Shield is the one that sets the policy that they only pay $10 on $110 per pint of Freon. The person that I talked to at Home Shield when I originally set the appointment up was very straightforward and told me what was gonna be the amount for the Freon. But when it got down to it, we were at $250 and that was more than I had anticipated. Still, it’s not like they didn’t solve the problem. The AC is definitely is working now.

People have slammed American Home Shield but I've been with the company over 20 years and I'm probably not gonna change. They sent Black Dog Mechanical when the AC was not working and they're outstanding. They had to contact the tenant many times then they worked around the tenant not being there and got it fixed. The tenant finally reported that everything is working great. Steve is one of the best service contractors I've had, if not the best. He runs Black Dog Mechanical. He is Black Dog Mechanical. But the HVAC person American Home Shield had before was Quality Comfort and in no way would I want them back if I could have a different choice. Fortunately, I was provided one. But American Home Shield did not have very many contractors in that area for many years so I had to take what I could get.
I also had a very serious problem with the well going out once. I have a property in Mars Hill where three families are serviced by that well. I put it in the request but then they sent me back a service contractor who was HVAC. I do the claim online because it used to be impossible to reach American Home Shield by phone and I think it was a computer glitch. But they must've changed their policy because I can get through by phone now. I called American Home Shield, expecting to wait an hour, but I got somebody right away. The service representative was not the most cooperative in the world though. In fact, I had to finally ask for her manager. She said she would have to call the contractor but it was 7:00 at night. Of course they're not answering. And if she had looked at the screen, she could've seen very easily the well pump people serviced the pump last year.
After asking for her manager twice, she called some other department and they sent me an email confirmation at 8:00 at night. I don't really talk to Ferguson's because I know them and that they would come out at 8:00 at night. So we got it straightened out. But it was only because I know American Home Shield so well and I've worked with them for so long.

I was getting my locks changed. I submitted the claim online and American Home Shield sent LT Lock and Key. The contractor who came out was great. But the warranty is kind of a waste of money. The only reason we have it is because it was part of our purchase but I'm not renewing. It doesn't really cover much and I still have to pay $75 to get something done, out of pocket, with an additional $150 on top of that. So I really don't see the value. I would tell others not to do it although my experience with American Home Shield was great.

I have two houses with American Home Shield and I've been with them for so many years. I recently submitted a claim for an air conditioning issue by phone and everything was okay. It was easy. You could feel nothing from the air conditioner and the guy from Airmax said it was because it was really dirty in the furnace room. So he cleaned everything and now, it's working a little better.
Hi Luz,
It was a pleasure to read your feedback about your experience with the air conditioner contractor.

I had some surge in the basement. A tube of some kind was leaking. I called American Plumbing to come and do it because I was refused by American Home Shield and then the lady called American Home Shield and said that they could do it. The contractor that American Plumbing comes every time, the same man, Bob. He’s always very pleasant, and he has his assistant with him, and they always do a great job. I’ve had him for years. He listens to what I say then he goes from there and he usually finds the problem right away. The repair kept me from doing projects for a couple of days but then the thing works perfectly now. AHS has always been available for me.
Your feedback regarding your recent experiences with AHS is greatly appreciated. I hope you continue to enjoy your home warranty coverage.

American Home Shield was there when I needed them. The valve on our shower was broken and I put in a request over the phone. The first appointment was cancelled and I had to wait. I took the whole day off and Plumbers, Inc. ended up showing after I could’ve worked all day and gone home, but I understand that the tech was busy and when he came out, he fixed the problem in 10 minutes.
Your feedback is more than appreciated. We are glad to hear about your experience and the repairs that are complete.

One of our air conditioning systems was out and American Home Shield sent CityLine Air Conditioning. They were fantastic. They ordered the part, put it in and it was working again. They seemed to be a good contractor so, give them a gold star. Everything was great. It was one fellow who came out to diagnose the problem and then, another one came out once the part came in. Both were equally competent and nice. 2-10 responded super-quickly, so we couldn't be more pleased. We turned it in online on Saturday and we figured it would be the next week. 2-10 had the contractor come out on Sunday and it was just a few days to get the parts. Then, we were fixed.

We bought our house two weeks ago and called American Home Shield to have our house rekeyed. Scheduling it took a week, but the guy that came out was great and we were happy.

I've never had a problem thus far with American Home Shield. Recently, the technician who came was not very personable, but he fixed the microwave that stopped heating and that’s all that really matters. I've had other issues a while back on the garbage disposal. It was new and there was something in there that needed to be removed. I didn’t know anything about it so the same guy took care of that.
When I call American Home Shield, I feel like I always get someone who doesn’t speak English very clearly. I was just on the phone with them today because I was wondering if they do maintenance on air conditioning and they don’t. It took me a good 15 minutes to figure out what needed to be done if there is something wrong with it ‘cause it’s getting hot and I figure I’d have it checked.
We had someone come out and check it and I didn’t know if it was covered by my insurance or warranty service. They said it was leaking and I just found that problem, but it seems to be working fine. I called American Home Shield and told them what the situation was. They said they have to bring out a licensed contractor to see what is wrong with it, and according to that diagnosis they will tell me what they will cover. Explaining that to them took like 2 minutes, but it took me forever to figure out what the rep was saying. The language barrier is an issue for me when I call and I don’t know if it was just my luck calling these past two times.

We were off American Home Shield for a while but we got back since the early 90's. It’s good when something breaks and it costs me money when it doesn’t. When the door springs of the dishwasher broke, we couldn’t close the door to wash the dishes. The guy who came out was very good. They called and they lined up the appointment within the time frame. The guy was there on time. He was clean cut, well-spoken, got right at it, did the job and did a good job. He was very knowledgeable. Since the repair, there has been a noise in one of the motors because they had to pull it out and put it back in. We only used it once so I don’t know what caused that. It’s a very quiet-running machine and this has never happened before. But when we use it again, then we’ll see if there’s something that came loose.
We are happy to hear that the service exceeded your expectations. Thanks for being a loyal customer!
