We got a new home and we had the locks changed on our doors. The tech sent by AHS was very pleasant and helpful. He got right back to us when we called and spoke with a representative. He was on time too. Since then, everything has been working great and the locks have been performing as they should. If we have any locks or something changed again, we would give him a call. We had a really smooth transaction.

American Home Shield sent a technician from Optimum Appliance Repair and it was not very good. He came, checked the appliance and said it was just a simple deal and we didn't even need any parts. And then he reported back to the warranty company that all it had is short and this, that, and the other. And we overlooked the fact that it was not a covered item. It was originally in the house, and we moved it to the garage so it got excluded.
It was a little bit misleading on his part back to the warranty company about what went wrong and more so to us. Because here's the way I would have looked at it, "Hey, look. This is not gonna be a covered item, but here's what you got going on." And maybe try to earn our business in an ethical fashion instead of just saying, "Now, I'm gonna do a quick fix here," which it did. It come back on, but then it continued to do what it was doing already and take the $75 and run.
I've had four experiences with Home Shield and one has been good. I've got two situations going on right now where we thought it was maybe electrical. I called and canceled that. They have never canceled the transaction. I have challenged that on the credit card, and the credit card company has credited that. But on these two other incidences, we also thought we had a problem with the air conditioning, which we actually did.
Also the contractor was supposed to contact us within 48 hours. The same with the electrician. He never did. We turned that in on a Friday morning. And he did not contact us until Monday afternoon. He left a message. My wife immediately called him back. He never returned the call, and that's one of them that's in question right now that we're challenging on the charge because they haven't done anything.
The second one on the air conditioning, those folks never called us. It took two phone calls from my wife and a phone call from me. And then, all of a sudden, they could get them out there. They called me, and it was not realistic for me on that day so I said, "I can't confirm this appointment." Next thing I know, I've got an email that says, "your appointment is confirmed." I called the air conditioning company that they had referred to us, and I said, "I'm canceling this appointment. It was not confirmed. I cannot do that. My plate is too full. And my place of appointment, the next two days were a problem to boot, yet, at this point." Then, they turned right around. It was still a pending transaction.
We feel like that the warranty is not worth what we got. We lost all trust in what might possibly be happening. I've replaced the air conditioning unit and the heating in my home which should have been covered items, but I didn't trust the contractor or the warranty company to come out and do the proper thing. I'm very disappointed, and I've never had to run into that before. I sold warranties myself for almost 30 years and I had expectations. And then because I do know how they work, that was another one of my fears because of experience with the contractors. You're only as good as what your contractors are.
When you have three experiences back to back to back to where the end result was basically the same, or the response time, or just the picture that was drawn, we'd lost a lot of faith in it. It's not the owner's fault. They tried to do the right thing in doing that. And from what we've read about Home Shield and even from our Realtor, at that point, basically had been pretty good, but our experience has not been good.
James,
I understand you were not happy with the outcome of your experience with AHS. I will work to see if there are any other options and follow up with you with an update. Thanks for your patience

The pilot light on the hot water tank needed resetting. I called AHS over the weekend to submit the claim and it took two days for the guy to come out. Everything was really great on both the contractor and AHS side. The representative from American Home Shield took the time. I told her that I was not going through the whole thing and then she said that she would get the contractor as soon as she could. When I got in contact with the OnePlus, they came out very courteous and the guy even took our number. He said that he was gonna reset the pilot light and that was it. He also told us to just call them if anything goes wrong. They took the information off the tank so when they come back, they would have all the parts we need. Since the repair, I'm able to take hot showers and I haven’t had any trouble.

I had an air conditioning problem three weeks ago and I submitted the claim via online to American Home Shield. They said that someone would contact me within 48 hours, and it did happen. The contractor called in the morning and said that they would be here around a period of time and they were there within the window. They were polite and the repairman explained everything that was going on. I’ve only submitted two claims and I haven’t had any problems. I would recommend AHS.

My most recent claim with American Home Shield is for my refrigerator. A week before the 26th of August, I called American Home Shield. They called Universal for the man to come out and look at my refrigerator. August of 26, the gentleman came out and looked at my refrigerator. He also put down everything that needed to be done, which was fine. That Monday, the gentleman came out to the house with a small box. Now, he pulled the refrigerator out and put a plate back there.
Before I called American Home Shield, the second door was working, but the top wasn’t getting as warm as it was supposed to be. When he put the plate back there, he plugged it back up and he said everything was back. And I happen to know everything is not done. I said, “What about the plate here on the front? There are no numbers here on the front of my refrigerator. And it’s still getting warm.” I gave him the receipt where the gentleman put down what was supposed to be ordered and what he was supposed to put in. He said, “Well, nobody ordered all of these parts.” So, I said, “You didn't get all these parts, but you came here to put just the plate back here?” So, he left.
He came back Friday. He had the parts that was ordered. But in the meanwhile, I was calling American Home Shield. They were telling me, “The parts are in.” Then, when I called back again, “The parts have to be ordered.” It was giving me the runaround. I have been without a refrigerator. I called today. The contractor said that he was going to put in the claim to American Home Shield. I called American Home Shield, the lady was supposed to call me back, and they're supposed to make a settlement to me, and she has never called back. I've been with American Home Shield for a while for them to treat me like this. It has gotten me so upset and so frustrated. I’m very angry with them. The customer service is not to be desired as far as I’m concerned. But it’s just this one bad experience and I would recommend them still.

We had some lights that would not come on in a couple of bedrooms. I submitted the claim online, which was not difficult at all. I submitted it on a Thursday and I got a call that Friday. Eli Electric Solutions came and gotten that squared away. We also had some lights that were outside the garage that did not come on, and they have gotten that squared away too. I've had American Home Shield in that property for about six months already, and I have another property where I also have them for four years.

All American Plumbing and Rooter came out to my place ‘cause it looked like twice within the same week, there were issues with a running toilet and then following that, there were issues with the hot water heater. Though I had to pay two different fees, both plumbing issues have been fixed. The tech did both projects and he was very efficient. He fixed both the first and second half the same day. I’d recommend American Home Shield.

This is by far the worst warranty company ever when it comes to contacting their corporate office when issues are not being processed correctly. The customer service agents take your information but no one ever call you back to answer your questions or try to resolve your problem. The contractors they use are no good, I had to pay out of pocket over $600.00 in July of 2018 for them to repair my air conditioner and it only worked for two weeks. I called the contractor back who did the work but he did nothing.
I have been trying to receive a reimbursement on another appliance that they couldn't fix in 2018 and they have not taken care of that issue yet. When I ask for their corporate office phone number the customer service associates say they don't have a number to give me. I'm a senior citizen, my daughter thought it would be good for me to have a home warranty but from my experience I feel it was horrible. It is September 2019 and I'm still dealing with them on the above mentioned issues.
Barbara,
I apologize that your experience with AHS was not satisfactory. I will follow up with you in an effort to assist you with your unresolved matters regarding this request. Thanks for your patience

I have had two home warranties with American Home Shield over the past 8 years. One for my home in Arizona and one for my home in Florida. If I could go back in time, I would have never used AHS for either house. In fact, they are so bad and try to avoid paying anything at all costs, I have had to contact their Office of the CEO several times to get things done. That did help but at great financial and emotional costs to me and my family. The biggest example of where AHS falls down is in Air Conditioning coverage. 90% of the contractors AHS have sent out to my house tell me that AHS will always try to avoid paying for a needed expensive part replacement and that they tell contractors to just 'band aid' the unit.
The reason why AHS does this is that they only have to pay $10/pound for freon and most of the costs with AC units are for FREON (R22). This burdens the homeowner with the $75 service call and $100's of dollars in customer freon charges. I figure I am out of pocket close $7500 in freon charges for my two properties in the past 8 years. Then to top it off, AHS in August raised the monthly premium on my Florida property from $58 to $99 per month. Now I am forced to switch companies and have no clue which one to turn to b/c every company has horrific customer reviews.
Good Morning, Thank you for your feedback!

I didn't want to give a 1 star rating but had to because it was required. We have the premium policy that covers heat and air replacement if it can't be fixed. They sent a company that tried to fix by filling with Freon. American Home Shield only pays $10 a pound for Freon and the bill was $80 a pound. After we paid $770 for Freon, the compressor failed and the unit needed to be replaced. American Home Shield refused to pay because no called to say it needed to be replaced. We argued that there is nothing in the contract that directs us or the service company to call. They were extremely rude to us and to the service company. We have asked for refrigerator repair in the past, only to pay $136 service call fee and we never hear from the service company again. $136 flat fee is almost twice as much as a normal service call. We're cancelling.

I have sent you an email and called attempting to reach you to assist with resolving any concerns you may have. If assistance is still needed please do respond at your earliest convenience and I will be happy to partner with you to reach a resolution!

Like any insurance the moment of truth is when it comes to claims. I was a AHS customer for 3 years but my most recent claims experience involving a microwave & washer left me feel cheated. AHS dragged my case for over 2 months with no resolution or decision, their call center is one of the most horrible, disorganized and unethical that I have ever come across. I feel they are ok if you need one odd repairs, but when it comes to anything major they will drag their feet, find contractual loopholes and ultimately make your life miserable.
I finally had enough of this AHS nonsense, I cancelled my contract and will spread the word about my experience so that others can be careful. I also intended to explore legal course of action. In my opinion the company is a fraud, lacks value with no regards for customer experience as long as you are bound by a contract. It is also not easy and clean to cancel the contract. There is a lot of fine print. Overall extremely bad experience.

American Home Shield is okay, but their contractor never answered the phone. The contractor initially called my tenant in one of my properties and they arranged the appointment. But later, they did not do their repair and they needed to send their report to American Home Shield but they didn't. They submitted the issue after I called American Home Shield three times. They told me that American Home Shield do not cover it. We were calling them about this, and they never answered me. And later, in another property, we were trying to arrange the appointment with the contractor, but they never called me back. After 36 hours, they never answered me, so I have to call American Home Shield to make the appointment again with another vendor.

I signed up for AHS earlier this year and finally cancelled my subscription to them today, after a very frustrating experience. My issues with my air conditioner service request are as follows:
2) We knew in advance that Freon isn't covered. Our system needed $300 worth of Freon in addition to the $100 deductible for the call. We decided to put sealant in with the Freon to reduce the chances of it leaking again. The technician charged me $500 for 2 packs of the sealant. This is where the real issues started.
3) After the tech left, I checked internet pricing for the sealant (he had left the package, so I knew what I was looking for). Going rate per pack is $50 to $60. I understand companies need to make a profit, but marking up your cost 5 times is ridiculous. This is really a side issue, but important.
4) I submitted my invoice to AHS for claim reimbursement for the $500 sealant charge. I knew I wasn't going to be reimbursed for the Freon - no problem there. But the sealant - even at the exorbitant markup - was still cheaper than replacing the guts of the A/C unit, so I felt like AHS would gladly pay for a lower cost repair.
5) I contacted AHS 4 times for status of my claim reimbursement. Every time, it was 15 to 20 minutes on the phone, and every time they promised to check on it and get back to me in one business day. Not once did they call me.
There are a few points to think about here: Economically, it's questionable if paying $58 per month, and then the $100 deductible per tech visit and who knows how much for uncovered items is actually cheaper than paying as you go. But in the end, it was the broken promises from AHS that finished them for me. I can put up with a certain amount of bad news. But when someone doesn't do what they say they will do - 4 times, with at least 3 different people - I decided this isn't a company I want to do business with.

American Home Shield has been really good. We've had them a long time on and off. If we have any trouble with them, it's usually because of a service provider that they've got underneath their umbrella. It's the broken cog in the wheel. I would recommend American Home Shield. In fact, I do recommend them and explain that it's a process. It's not gonna happen overnight like they're there when you pick up the phone. When I had a claim for the AC, the service was scheduled immediately. The contractor came out a couple of days later. But they tried to come within 24 hours. It was my fault. But the claim went fine overall.

I recently had a claim for the range and Cal Valley Appliance Repair was sent out by American Home Shield. Cal Valley evaluated the problem, and they diagnosed it. They ordered the parts, came back and installed the parts. One item was still not working, so they came back out for a recall, diagnosed it then, and ordered the parts. And now, they’re scheduled to come out tomorrow. They were very nice, very courteous, and seemed very professional.
All in all, I’ve been with American Home Shield for 28 years, and I’m very satisfied. I prefer to do my claims online since if I call in, I'm on hold anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour and then the person that you're talking has very poor English until you get a supervisor back in the states. If you’re dealing with someone overseas, many times, it’s very difficult to understand them. But when I do my claim online, there’s no area for a narrative to request a specific vendor that you’ve used in the past. I’d also like to be able to communicate briefly with someone online if I have questions.

I had a little problem with my AC claim. Initially, I called American Home Shield and told them we had a problem. They said it’d be 3 working days before somebody would get back with us. I accepted that. I called them on a Friday, so we had Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and nobody ever called back. I was waiting for them to call me with an appointment. I then had to call them back. They said the guy could not get to us for another day. I told them that was not satisfactory and they said, “Let’s see if we can find somebody else that can come earlier than that.” This was probably an unusual situation but if they say somebody is going to call you within 3 business days, I expect a call in 3 business days, and that didn't happen. That was before the storm, so don’t be blaming the storm. They found somebody to come the next day and the gentleman that came in and worked on the air conditioner was really good.

I got American Home Shield because I want to make it one place for my daughter who is in college to call instead of trying to figure out who to call. My recent claim with American Home Shield went fine. I had a dishwasher issue in our condo where my daughter lives for college. I made one call and the contractor came out and took care of it. the technician did a great job. I live three and a half hours away, and he had texted me ahead of time saying he was on his way. I said that my daughter was there and she would be happy to let him in. I then gave her number and he texted her. He said he was on it and he would be there in just a minute.
He followed up with me at the end saying it was all taken care of. He told me, as well as my daughter, what the issue was, and she was very happy with it. Since then, everything has been fine and the unit is still working. She also made two calls and there were excellent people in both times. I had a plumbing issue and Accent Plumbing came. They also found a problem with the water heater so they sent a recommendation to American Home Shield. Within three days, the pipe leakage and the water heater problem were taken care of. So, I couldn’t be any more pleased. Both AHS and Accent Plumbing called me after the repair if everything was working up to par. This is the best communication and verbal award you can give a company. I even recommended AHS to family and friends.

The dishwasher wasn’t cleaning very well and we had tried multiple times to see if it was something we were doing and that we were probably not cleaning before putting plates in or the glasses in. A guy came in and took a look. There was something that was clogged at the bottom of the dishwasher, and he had to open it up to clean it up a certain way and to get at it. It seems to be working well since then.
I have been an American Home Shield customer now for a decade. It has been easy to submit claims online and the notifications are very timely. Generally, the technology is pretty good. The website is very easy to use and it's very simple to put for them the request. The latest technician that came over was really good, very knowledgeable, very clear in explaining what was going on, very nice, and pleasant. So, it was a very good experience.

The interior of one of the tanks in the toilet was completely worn out and the other one in my wife’s bathroom was rocking, which was uncomfortable for her. I used to do that stuff for a living but I’ve gotten old enough now to where there are a lot of things I can’t do anymore. So, we called our friends and we got good help. The man came in and did his work quietly and respectfully. Within an hour, he has rebuilt my tank and has tightened my wife's toilet down and has put a stem in there. He also cleaned up his mess. Right now, everything is perfect.
We also filed a claim for the air conditioner. We heard strange sounds and I thought it needed a starter on the compressor or the fan motor was going bad but the contractor said everything was fine. He assured me. He put the gauges on there, checked the Freon, took the ohmmeter and he checked the ohm out on the high and low voltage stuff going to the AC, and all of it was okay. I was standing over when he did it. My wife and I just hadn't been here long enough to actually hear the thing run, because it was right outside her bathroom wall and we were both standing there and heard it for the first time. We just didn't wanna take any chances with 100-degree weather.
My wife has done claims both online and over the phone to American Home Shield but she said that doing it online was easier. The time that AHS put in for the repair people to come was between 11:00 and 3:00 and the plumber was here at 10 after 11:00. Also, he called before he came. It was the same with the AC guy. He was here on the same day we made the claim. So far, everybody we've had has been very reputable, professional and courteous. So, we're pleased.

Our air conditioner wasn’t working and I submitted the claim with AHS online. They said that a contractor would be out within the next 48 hours. Then the guys from Lane Services called the same day and were here early. They got out pretty fast and they were excellent. If I did it on the weekend, they’d call by Monday. But it was within 24 business hours.
Initially, they said that the compressor was bad. And then my husband went out there and saw that the guy who put the compressor in before had put in a used compressor instead of a new one. And that was a problem 'cause a remanufactured part was put in my air conditioner. That wasn't the best thing to do. The air worked for a few days and then it went out again. It was difficult because we had to get a window unit and sleep on the sofa in the front room where the window unit was.
Once the guys came back out and put the new unit in, we haven’t had any issues. American Home Shield put 1,100 on the unit. We’ve been a customer with AHS since 2002. They should be, at least, throwing in half on our air conditioner, instead of just paying 1,100 for it. Also it’s not our fault that someone has came out here and put a remanufactured part in our air conditioner. Other than that, AHS has been okay.

They were confirming that it was the right part that I was trying to diagnose then they helped me through it so it's been awesome. These guys are great.
When first guy came out, he said he wasn't 100% sure what was wrong but that it was most likely one of two common problems. He didn't have either of the parts in the truck though so he went ahead and ordered both parts to my house. He was really nice and very informative. I watched him and chatted with him. He was very professional and he cleaned up after himself. Then after I got both products, a different guy came out and took everything apart. He figured out which piece it was and installed it. He was also really nice and very courteous. He also took the second part that was ordered to my home and that we didn't use. He said he was gonna inventory it. The range is perfect now. It's like it's new so it was exactly the intended effect. So I'm very thankful.

When I bought my home, my realtor gave me free American Home Shield for a year. That's wonderful when you’re moving into a house. However, AHS has been horrible. The claim for my refrigerator that was leaking was activated on the 8th of August. Sears, the first service that came out, was horrible. With the young lady that I worked with, I don't think she likes people. They were supposed to come on the 21st, but they canceled 10 minutes before they were supposed to come. They didn’t call me. They just texted me and said, “It’s been canceled.” I had to take off from work. They were not user-friendly. They put the claim for the next day, and when that person came in, he stayed exactly 3 minutes and 12 seconds then he left. He said, “We don’t do refrigerators that don’t have a serial tag on.” I said, “Is that a policy with all the services?” He said, “No. But that’s with Sears.”
I called American Home Shield and they got Appliance Wizard. Those people were super cool. The owner came out with an apprentice, and they said that American Home Shield is supposed to give me another refrigerator. I tried to reach AHS as I was told to call and have the dimensions. I even sent the rep Ms. Jackie a picture of the refrigerator that I found online. The refrigerator has still not been serviced, but AHS already took the service fee out. What is happening right now is they’re trying to take another one. I keep getting alerts saying that I owe them. I owe no one ‘cause I haven’t been served. Today is now the 6th of September, and the claim is gonna be 30 days in two days.
I looked into my account, and American Home Shield has this thing where I don’t need to pay anything. And so, I called and told them they needed to correct that. The young lady said it’s gonna take time for them to correct it, but to just keep looking at it. So far, it has not changed and I've gotten nothing. It’s almost time for them to get their monthly fee also. So, they're pretty much on the winning side, and I’m on the screwed side. I’m very dissatisfied. This has been an experience that I don't wanna experience again. If AHS knew the actual on-the-ground persons and how they’re not being represented well, maybe it’ll wake them up.

Hello, Harihar. Thank you for the feedback. I apologize for the fact that you found your service experience to be an unfavorable one.
AHS utilizes thousands of vendors across the continental United States. We maintain these vendor relationships because we want to service our customers effectively and efficiently. In most cases, AHS will assign a local service vendor to provide a diagnosis and repair for this very reason. Occasionally, however, we do have to source repairs to a vendor who lives in a different region. This may be because all of the available vendors are booked to their capacity or because we are still working to locate a suitable local vendor in your region.
We are able to locate your account based upon the information in your profile. I will review the service request and will reach out to you.

They scheduled me for 9/6 between 10 am - 2 pm, but never showed up or called. I contacted AHS several times of which they had suggested I wait another hour and so on. It got to the point that I placed several more calls to AHS who put me on hold for over 60 minutes (yes, over an hour) because by this time I had requested to speak with a manager and they refused to get a manager on the phone. For the minimal coverage they offer, you're far better off just saving their monthly fee in a separate account. I have finally used their service after a year under their contract, for a leaking pipe. The contract they sent sent us the wrong guy, and only after I paid them $125 service fee did they inform me that they cannot fix it. However, since the contractor tightened a nut (which does not solve my problem) I'm still being charged for the fee. Luckily, their cancellation process was easy and fast. It took less than 3 hours to get them out of my life. I wish I had the $600 I've given them though.

They offered less than 10% of the actual cost of service for their cash in lieu settlement for my AC evaporator coil. The customer service is horrible - they interrupt, they’re rude, don’t have any answers and they don’t call back or email with answers, even when they tell you they willfully. I’ve been hung up on twice, even though I never cursed or was disrespectful, just because I was insisting on answers or assistance. Their purpose is to take your money and provide you with the least expensive solution, even if it doesn’t fix the actual problem. Did not tell at the time of signing up that there will be a year long contract. CHEATERS!! Only time I needed some service to top up freon and these guys were paying only $10/lbs whereas the contractors charge $60+ per pound. When I got frustrated with the lack of coverage and penny pinching and asked for cancellation, I had to pay for one month fee as cancellation charge. Customer service smugly told me that cancellation fee is mentioned in the contract at so and so page in so and so section. When I asked why that wasn't mentioned clearly/verbally at the time of sign up (like other companies do) then the response was that it's my responsibility to ready the contract carefully. I gave up and cancelled as I wanted to get rid of this cheater company.

I have owned 3 homes in my life, and have stayed in each for around 10 years!! I recently purchased a home warranty from American Home Shield, who should change their name to Philippine Home warranty company!!! I thought that having some peace of mind, as I was growing older would be worth the $50 per month, and $100 per issue deductible. So sorry to say, I literally flushed that money down the toilet. Months of not using them, I had an emergency with my garden hose faucet, that I was replacing, that broke off while removing, and had to shut the water supply to the house.
Called them at 10 pm, was told it would be 24-48 hrs before someone would come out. I explained to the agent that it was an emergency, as water was shut off, and that we would have no water for 2 days, and we were supposed to leave on vacation in 3 days for 12 days. He told me to get my own plumber, and to submit the bill, for payment. The plumber cost me $265, sent them the bill, never heard back from this crappy company.
So, when we get back from vacation, I called customer service for reimbursement, got a line of agents based in the Philippines, who barely had a grasp of the English language, who were all given American names, made to act like Americans, and were far from such. I got the run around for hours, on hold forever, talking to supposed supervisors who were no better, after which I just gave up, as supposedly there was no notes to indicate that any agent told me to get my own plumber, to assist me!!! And they won't pay any unauthorized charges??!!
Months later, in a home that is only 9 years old, and I am the original owner, I had a leak from the water heater, that was coming thru an upstairs restroom wall. Paid the $100 deductible, plumber comes out 2 days later after initiating a service call, was told that the warranty company will not pay for this issue, as the heater itself was fine for now, and even though it was leaking, had to do with pipes, that were not covered by the crappy company, due to language in the literature, that ANY modifications done, any time a pipe has to be changed, or brought up to state or city code, and they change any part of the pipe to something else, it is now modified, and will thus be denied!!!!
The job cost me $345, plus the water damage and mold from the leak which will cost me thousands to complete, will not be paid, as they DO NOT cover SECONDARY DAMAGE. I cancelled the crappy service contract, and will probably, keep to my routine to move every 10 years, into a brand new home, and never have to use a Home warranty company, called American, with agents based in non English speaking lands, ever again!!!! Do not use this company, unless your money is WORTH FLUSHING DOWN THE TOILET!!!
Glenn,
I am sorry that we were not able to offer a resolution that you were pleased with while the contract was active. We hope this experience does not deter you from considering AHS in the future for your home warranty needs.

I have an AHS warranty. The DMC is them contractor. I had problem with the furnace and the air conditioner. The mechanic did not appear in the time, it happened couple of time. My tenant was not too happy. If the contractor change the main unit they need to have permit to do the installation. If they finished the work they must to inform you "The permit is OK." In this case the contractor did not inform me about the status of permit. My friend, my estate agent and me asked them many times but we had not get answer. They do not answered our any e-mails for months. I asked the customer service to help me because I can't sale my house without permits. AHS chose the contractor not me. Why do AHS works with unreliable contractors? Why do they do not help me?

On August 27, 2019, I placed a service request with AHS because both of our air conditioning units on the roof had gone out. They are at least 24 years old and had come to the end of their days. The contractor AHS dispatched said both machines had been so badly serviced from a prior calls that he deemed them too dangerous to open the side panels and look inside. He filed his report and AHS "denied it." What does that mean, what happens next? The company said I would have to call AHS to find out what happens next. I called the 800 number and got a call center in the Philippines. English was the gentleman's second language; he spent an hour alternately trying to understand my issue and putting me on hold. Then the call got disconnected.
I called back. No, I could not be connected with the person I had spoken with, I was to start all over with another man for whom English is a second language. It was an endless loop, a way to deny the customer any favorable resolution. Yesterday was Day 9 without AC so I called a very reliable company in town and paid them to install two new units on the roof. I had no other choice. It is 110 outside in Phoenix, AZ and it's close to that in the house. People die in this kind of heat. We are shopping for a new home warranty company. Our experience with the AHS process is that it is structured to fail the customer.
Good Morning, I am showing that someone has been assigned to your case and has emailed you regarding your issue.

The problem started with my AC. It was working very minimum. Then we started to have a problem with the electricity. The breakers would go off every time the was AC working. The weather was very hot and then my electricity went off. This happened many times. I also had a problem with my computer. We fixed the electricity back and everything was very well. Then when I got back from Mexico, my two refrigerators were off and all my food was bad. American Home Shield tried to fix them but everything would take days for a person to come out.
Every time I need to call American Home Shield, I need to wait more than one hour for the person to communicate with me. But that person who answered me in the phone was very nice. We got it that day and they needed some part for the refrigerator, so we had to wait a week. The doors on the refrigerator had to be kept open because it smell bad. Then the part came and we had a person came out. When he tried to close the refrigerator, the door would not close. They tried to find the door for it, but they saw that the refrigerator needed to be replaced.
It took many days to wait and I also tried to call the department to replace the refrigerator. But, American Home Shield is going to replace the refrigerator for my home. They also gave me a good option for the replacement, but I told them that I'd prefer to buy the refrigerator myself because if I were to replace it, I'd prefer to choose a better size I had before. I have the model already. They told me I need to buy it and send them the receipt. Overall, I am so happy with American Home Shield.

We’ve been with American Home Shield since ’09. The only thing I don’t like is how we have to go through a whole process. My sister has been using American Home Shield since they bought the house in ’94. She told me about them back in Colorado and we’ve been using them since 2011. Every time we buy a house, we always go with American Home Shield. There was a time when my husband wanted to try a certain company that his friend talked to him about that was way cheaper. We had one thing that we needed to get done. But it was one of those instances where the home warranty company couldn't find anyone and we had to do it ourselves then they would reimburse us. In the end, we were told that the work was not one that they had us covered for. After that one incident, we went back to American Home Shield.
Our most recent claim with them went really well. The contractor, 1st Choice Appliance Repair, came in earlier. When you're given a four-hour window, I like it when someone actually comes on the first hour rather than the last hour. The contractor this time was very timely and was very friendly. He told me what was wrong with the machine, showed me where it was and what needed to be replaced. I was there the whole time. We were just talking.
The only thing is since we just moved to this house, there’s always a conflict when I'm doing my claims online. It goes to the old owner’s contract number. I did an online claim the first time with our toilet and I ended up calling American Home Shield. I hope that they fixed it like they said they would where when I do a claim online, it would now be under our name as opposed to the old owner’s name. I spoke to a couple of different people at American Home Shield and it was fine. They weren't that hard to understand but it was kinda hard to explain because they were calling me Joan which is the old owner's name. I told them that was not me and that was what the confusion was. I think the old owner got a call and she canceled it. She told them she doesn't live there. But American Home Shield called me saying that they fixed the problem.

I've had two claims recently that I did right in the same week. I have one with the AC repair and one with a dryer, and I submitted the claims on the website. The AC just wasn’t cooling. I called and the contractor came out two days later to repair it. They said everything was repaired and that everything else was good but everything worked good for five days then it went out again. So I called them that following Tuesday and they came out last Thursday. It was a re-call and they said that I need a compressor.
It’s been a hassle with American Home Shield. I was calling because I’m in Texas and it’s hot. It’s 87 degrees. I was on hold with them forever yesterday. It was like 30 minutes and after being on hold, they said that they had 900 other claims in front of me and that as soon as the claim is approved, they would order the part. I also called back the company that they contracted with. They told me that American Home Shield had not authorized the part yet. So the company is getting one part and American Home Shield is getting another part but I have to wait until those other 900 people. American Home Shield is not gonna authorize me to get anything so I’m not too pleased with them right now. And it takes three to five days for the part to come in.
For the dryer, the contractor came out last Tuesday then they had to order a part. The part came in and they were supposed to come out today but I had a meeting so I rescheduled the service for tomorrow to fix the heating element and something else. The contractors sent by American Home Shield are average. I’m not totally satisfied because I always have to put in a model number and they never guarantee they have the part. That means you have to take off two half-days. I don’t always have time for people to tell me to wait from 1:00 to 5:00 or 8:00 to 12:00. The company that was sent out for the AC seemed good at first too, but I don’t know why they didn't realize the issue was the compressor the first time they came out. Then I had to wait 30 more minutes on a supervisor to come to try to sell me a new unit.

Woods Appliance Service called me back the next day, and then the contractor was out to my house within 15 minutes. He and his son were very professional. They kept me informed of what was going on with the refrigerator. They came out a couple of times until they figured out what was wrong. The contractor even came back on the weekend to help replace some stuff. I would use them again.

Generally, I submit my claims online to American Home Shield. It’s very easy, seamless and efficient. I had a problem with the filter for my pool and I’m disappointed that the part they replaced was not the brand that was there. The front half of the pump is beige and the motor is black. It’s not matching and the motor that was on there was a Pentair. It’s the best quality pool part that you can purchase and the last time the pump failed several years ago, I replaced it with Pentair because I did a research on it, and that’s what all the commercial pools use. When you go to all these resorts, that’s the brand that they use. It also lasted a lot longer than the original pump. I’m just wondering why it wasn’t replaced with the brand that failed. Still, in this recent claim, the contractor did a wonderful job and the quality of workmanship was very good. Overall, I’m very satisfied and I recommend AHS constantly.

The outlets in a couple of rooms weren't working. I called American Home Shield's number and then it went three days until the electrician came out. He was fine, did a good job, replaced a couple breakers, and then I paid the fee. It was a good experience. Last time, it was under a water heater and AHS said, "the water heater has to be provided by a different company". The company took long to get to my house and I couldn't take that much time, so they got me a quicker one. I didn't like that and I did not save a lot of money there. Nevertheless, this time it was outstanding. So, I'm going to stay with it.

I submitted a claim online to American Home Shield for the AC and the previous time, I was out of air conditioning upstairs for a week and a half so, that was frustrating. The contractor said they were waiting for a part but with the technology that we have these days, they should be sent overnight. I got kids and animals, and it was just miserable. In North Carolina, weather is humid and hot all the time, especially in August and July. I called AHS and asked if they could contact another company but they said no.
This second time was probably the best service I had from the contractor. They came out the next day. Before, it was hit or miss. They never called me to let me know that it was gonna be there in a certain time. I had to call them to find out what was going on. I called where it was sent from and UPS said they already sent it out and it has been there for a day. I called back the AC people and told them that and they said that they just found out about it. So, this time, the communication was good. Prior to that, it was terrible.

I had to call in a claim at American Home Shield, and what happened was another plumber came out, and this was something that followed the first plumber so then I had another problem. The first one, there was a leak and the contractor found it. But when they shut the water off, they didn't do it correctly, and it built up pressure on my water heater, which then exploded after they left. I had to file another claim because the first organization said that they had nothing to do with it because it was a different issue, because they had fixed the toilet and it was the water heater that went. I had to pay another $75, which was unfortunate. But Plumbers, Inc. was fantastic. The contractor knew what the problem was and he fixed it quickly.

American Home Shield sent BNM Services whose tech was fantastic. He showed up on time, took care of exactly what was needed, replaced the outlet for us, and took off. It could have started a fire so God bless them.

The very first time I filed a claim to American Home Shield for this unit, I did it over the phone but the second and third time was done online when I requested another technician to come over. Their claim process was horrible. The contractor that they sent out couldn’t fix the issue from the very first visit. They had to come three times and that speaks how professional they are. Also, the communication was very bad, I had to wait a whole week for every visit. The contractors come out with different decisions that are not fixing the issue. Finally, they figured out that the drip pan needs to be replaced because it has cracked and it's leaking from there. They just didn’t want to go all the way through. It’s super easy to understand and to fix, I just don’t understand their logic. The problem is still not resolved and it’s taking three weeks now so I’m still working with the contractor. I bought my home in June 2018. By July I was calling about the AC unit not working downstairs. The unit is 29 years old and the home came with AHS warranty. The first call I made on my own because of timing of a holiday weekend and I work out of state most of the time. The next issue came 10/15/18 and that was the furnace also 29 years old making a strange noise only part of the time. AHS sent out a company that did nothing--said they couldn't find anything wrong. Next issue 11/16/18 toilet upstairs would not flush. He got it working but it didn't work long. They sent someone out who said he thought it would be ok (put a band-aid) on it basically. Next issue was toilet stuck running causing me to have an $800.00 water bill because again I am out of town working.
I got tired of AHS charging me $75.00 every few months so I had the toilets replaced and paid for it myself. On 12/7/18 had to have them back out for same furnace which was not working at all. They got it working. On 4/22/19 no AC again, same unit, put another band-aid on it. 8/30/19 I called and they set up a company to come out but couldn't come until 9/5/19. I told them it had to be Saturday 8/31 because I would be gone again 9/3/19. They said they would keep trying. Didn't hear anything so I had my own company come out and it had to be replaced. Still heard nothing until Tuesday when I got a message from who they had setup and could come 9/5/19 which I had already told them I could not wait that long. I told them I had taken care of it myself to cancel.
I called AHS to speak to a manager and was on hold for 30 minutes. Couldn't stay on all day. Well they went ahead and charged the $75.00 even though I cancelled. They did however refund that when I called yet again. The reason I am writing this is because from my experience and that of a friend who uses AHS it appears that all they want to do is a quick fix that ends up costing the homeowner more in fees so they don't have to replace a 29 year old unit when it is clear it's not going to work any longer.

Updated on 12/25/2019: I previously posted about my experience trying to have a simple leaky valve on a shower fixed by resorting to my warranty policy. The experience has been a nightmare, and after some offer of help on the part of the company, their representatives have vanished like their crooked contractor -- gone, radio silence. So, to reiterate for anyone considering buying this policy to protect, say, a new home for the first year after purchase: this warranty is worth nothing. The contractor was sent from 1.5 hrs away; he misdiagnosed the leak and went away. After a month, with new damage appearing, called back. Contractor saw and admitted mistake; saw mold damage; panicked, presumably from fear of liability, and disappeared.
My attempts to get AHS to make this right have been futile. Their second contractor, a second opinion I was charged another $75 for, concluded that the first contractor made a misdiagnosis. In the interim, I was stuck paying for my own plumber to shut off the leak, and my own contractor to fix ceiling damage. I paid $700 for damage from the problem, the problem itself being fixable under warranty, supposedly for the $75 initial fee. The really insulting thing from a customer relations standpoint is that when I finally got through to representative, Steve **, I was told that I had indeed been seriously wronged by this contractor, and that Mr. ** was "going to work with me." He has also disappeared, after countless unanswered calls and emails.
Unlike a homeowners' insurance policy, where you may not get the settlement you want, but the company is available to explain and document the situation, even negotiate, AHS just disappears. Scary. And I have no recourse (small claims?) against their plumber. A simple Yelp search on that plumber ("More than Plumbing" in Mt St. Clemens, MI) reveals outright fraud, and many complaining precisely that their warranty company, AHS, sent these guys from far away to basically destroy their house.
In short, no oversight and accountability over their contractors. You are at the mercy of the one they send to you; and if the guy is incompetent or a crook, you don't get any support. Zero. Beware of this warranty. They've unilaterally closed my claim, I guess, after I asked for more documentation. Without explaining. The dispatch was **, when it was reopened by Steve ** at customer service. He's never followed up with me to explain how it was resolved. Original post on this site: Consumer Affairs Post- AHS AC# - **.
Original Review: Bought a new house and took out a ShieldPlus policy with AHS. Leak sprang from shower and I called, paid my $75, and I saw a plumber, their contractor of course, within a few days. Then it got scary. Their contractor misdiagnosed the leak. After 6 weeks, their contractor admits that it was a misdiagnosis, and works with AHS to correct the record. But, I'm told, misdiagnosis is not covered by my policy.
The problem is that in the meantime, major secondary problems arise: mold, a damaged ceiling below, and it turns out that AHS, upon getting a second opinion, will fix the leak, but won't cover the modification to the pipes that is necessary part of the job. So, I am a person who tried to use my policy for the first time on July 31, 2019. Instead of getting it resolved, I got lots of new, expensive problems, and danger for my infant son sleeping, unsuspectingly, next to all the mold that they failed to identify, let alone catch.
After the Aug. 2 misdiagnosis (triple-confirmed by plumbers, including the original contractor), I saw the same leak come back with force on August 27, which was when I saw it break open again and re-opened my claim (dispatch 522 201 942). The only problem is, now I have thousands of dollars of damage resulting from the original mis-diagnosis. You would think that AHS would be in some sense liable, or would help with some of this. I am told that my contract waives all liability for contractor mistakes. According to AHS, they're out of it. So, you call them, they force their contractor on you, and they have no say what happens.
So, if you think that you can rely on them and their contractors to, between the two of them, do the job without major new problems arising that AHS will tell you are yours to pay for, revise that thought. It seems impossible to get documentation from them on what has transpired, but I plan to file a complaint with the Department of Insurance and Financial Services here in Michigan.

I cancelled their policy in 2015 for my house in California. They used a technicality glitch and continued with my policy. A year ago they self-issued policy for my Nevada home and charged my credit card without my permission, approval or authorization. It was so shocking to me that I thought it was a joke. But then I called them and they stated that I never cancelled my policy. As much of a lie it is, the original policy I had was on my then California home and NOT on my Nevada home. So the old policy does not in any way applies to the new home since I did not request it, I did not authorize them to use my credit card. Also, when I called their department, the guy on the phone, Richard, said "If you don't have a policy with us why do we have your account information?" Well, let me guess, because you unlawfully and fraudulently kept using it? I lost $ 2,500 through this ordeal. Please be careful with this company. They are truly unethical people.

I've had them for just under a year, I've tried to use them two different time. One on my AC unit that wasn't pumping cold air well. I put in a request and they sent a tech out. (Still have to pay 125 regardless if they do anything or not.) They then give me a quote for coolant. I called and AHS said I would have to pay out of pocket cause it wasn't covered since it wasn't a hardware issue. So I paid, it didn't fix the problem. So I put in another service request. (Again, another 125 out of pocket regardless of help or not.) THEY SENT THE SAME PERSON OUT. He said it would be a new unit to fix. I asked if this would be covered and he said to talk to AHS. I called, said they would cover 400 dollars of the 5500 the guy quoted. So this time I called my own AC tech. Came out, inspected it and said a new unit would be better, but cleaned my coils and it worked much better.
A month later I used him to install a new unit for 3800 instead of 5500 (same unit, I checked) that the AHS sent. SO HORRIBLE RIGHT? Well my hot water heater busted and leaked. I called AHS to put in a service request (125 again, yes I know, Stupid). Sent out a tech, said they would have to replace it. Quote of 1750, and AHS would only cover the tank worth 280 dollars but the new piping since it was out of date so only the tank. So I called my own tech, quoted 870. Got it done by him and cancelled my policy the next day. Out roughly 1500 from the service fees, and monthly fees for no help and no money back on claims.

We put in a service request for our stove in the kitchen which is having some issues. A service guy from Active Appliance came out. I messaged the lady yesterday and she said that American Home Shield was gonna reach out today.
Then yesterday, I put in a service request for our spa which is not heating on demand the way it should. The heater comes on, then it cuts out, then it comes back and cuts out before it gets to the target temperature. The contractors are trying to come out next week. We also had one issue last fall with the washer and dryer that AHS finally made good on but it took an act of Congress to get it fixed. Eventually, the washer and dryer got replaced. American Home Shield's online process on claims was all right. I think it intentionally limits your ability to ask questions or communicate with anybody until you pay your $75. It’s designed that way. Do I think that’s the most user-friendly approach? No. It’s probably very efficient from a business standpoint, though. Action Plumbing was here by the next day. I have multiple leaks under the same sink. They fixed one, but the other one, they didn’t fix it because they said I didn’t report it right when I did the thing online. So, I was a little frustrated about that. I pointed out to them while they were here that the faucet was also leaking. They fixed the P-trap, but because I hadn’t marked the faucet separately, apparently, they don’t have to do anything. That’s pretty lame.
I have to pay another $75 when they're here and I had marked that I had two leaks, but I had not marked one of them as a faucet. Am I supposed to diagnose everything perfectly myself when it’s leaking multiple places under the same sink? I’m not a plumber. I’ve still got a drip under my sink. Although the P-trap which was the faster leak is under control, I still got a faucet that’s dripping. The one that they fixed is not leaking anymore, and they were very nice. Overall, I’m not unhappy, but it’s kind of one of those things where you gotta hold your chin high. You gotta say the words in the right order. You got another combination to get what you need done. Still, everybody’s been very professional.

They told me that there was no service call. I then called American Home Shield and spoke with a very nice operator who put me on hold for a long time. He would check and tell me that he's working on the claim and to stay on hold. AHS apparently called Sears, and then created the service call.
The tech came out the very next day. There was a lear and he had to replace a part. He re-pumped our refrigerator full of freon. He then ordered the part that we needed. At that time, our refrigerator started cooling again even though it was leaking out slowly. When the parts came in, he came back and changed the parts out. Now our refrigerator’s working like brand new again.
Every time I’ve called American Home Shield, everybody that I spoke to has been really friendly and met my needs immediately. I know that the technicians that come out aren’t actually American Home Shield. They're subcontractors. But every one of those has also been very knowledgeable, professional, courteous and prompt. I can’t say anything nicer about the people that have come out to help us. I tell people all the time about American Home Shield.

We just signed the contract for a year with American Home Shield, and so far, each of the vendors, especially Jaeger Electric, has really been wonderful. We had two problems going on. One was the air conditioning and the other one was the electrical. We had both vendors come out and take a look. And we discovered that it indeed was the air conditioning that was the problem. But we did take the recommendation of the Jaeger Electric. My sister was here when they came out. With the results and from what my sister has said, we’re very pleased with them. Having American Home Shield, we are happy that we feel guarded and comfortable knowing that we have the protection.

I had a plumbing claim for my bathtub. I called my claim in and American Home Shield was very nice and reassuring, and let me know that that was something that can be handled. The claim was handled in a really fast and timely fashion. They were beyond helpful. The contractor came out within 24 hours, but they had to come back. They could only assess the job that day, and then they had to wait for American Home Shield to approve it. The repair hasn’t been completed yet, but they know everything. The guy just had to figure out what he was gonna do, how he was gonna handle it, and they got it set up on Thursday. This is the second time I’ve been with American Home Shield. I left them before because they weren’t so nice, and I got back with them and it’s a real different experience. I'd recommend them to a friend.

The contractor American Home Shield sent out to replace the vacuum of our pool pump was great and since the repair, the pool has been good so far. However, I haven’t had a great experience with the past contractor relating to plumbing. My claim before the pool pump was for a dishwasher and I was very disappointed. It just seemed like the contractor didn’t know what they were doing and they weren’t very thorough with follow-ups. I had to call and get another person to come out. It took a month to fix my dishwasher.
American Home Shield doesn’t always hire the best contractors so I always Yelp them whenever vendors are assigned to me. For the most part, they don’t have good reviews. I wish that American Home Shield would do a better job of selecting their contractors and I told them this. I also told them that if they keep sending bad ones, we are gonna discontinue our service with American Home Shield. If you do your claim online, American Home Shield assigns you the contractor and if you need to change your contractor, you have to call the warranty company. If the contractor has not been dispatched then you can change. It seems a bit complicated.

In our house in Las Vegas, one of the pumps for our swimming pool had a bad leak. The seal was bad in it and the filters also needed some work. My wife took care of the claim submission with American Home Shield and it was not more than a day 'til the technician came out. He came a lot sooner than we expected. He fixed the leak quickly and he told me how to take the filters out and clean them. He also told us how to avoid the problem in the future. It was very good.
The only thing is there are two pumps and the other one, about a week later, we noticed that it was also leaking. We have a water slide, a waterfall pump, and that other pump that hadn’t been turned on. We are living in Minnesota and we won’t move back out there again for another three weeks, so we'll do it when we get back. But the pool guy should’ve caught that earlier so he could’ve done them both at the same time. Other than that, everything went very well. The guy who came and did the work was very professional and got it done fast.

The neighbor down the street uses American Home Shield and recommended them so I went with them too and have been with them for two years now. When my air conditioner stopped blowing anything, AHS tried to get somebody out here as soon as possible. But because of my daughter's asthma and it was gonna be in the upper 90s here, they went ahead and told me to use a different company from what they have listed, and that they would just reimburse me because they can't get anybody out for five days. They had me just use some outside company and I used them. They came out and said they fixed the motor blower but it still didn't work. Not even a week later, it went right back out. So, the company came back out. Each time, the guy was supposed to call before he does any work to get it approved. The first guy did. The second guy claims he did, which he never did.
So far, I've already gotten the first check from AHS and I'm still waiting on the second check. But I'm not so sure if I'm gonna get the second one because the contractor had to come out and they said they had to do some rewiring. The tech rewired it and then left, and two hours later, the system stopped working again. So, he came back out and he told me, "Well, now it's your circuit board. It's fried." I said, "What? I just had that replaced a year ago myself, and I paid for it." I called American Home Shield and asked them to please send me out one of their companies because I'm nervous and I just wasn't trusting this company. So, they sent out one of their companies and the guy who came out said that the drainage that comes out of the house was backed up. He blew it out and sucked the water out of the bottom tray and everything works fine.
The reps I spoke with were great, except for whenever I would call and explain to them that I wanted a different individual. I wasn't pleased with that. One of the ladies who talked to me told me I had to finish with who I started with. And I said, "That doesn't make any sense! I should be able to get a second opinion, especially if this company is trying to rip all us of off." So, I hung up and called the number that the dispatch people would call to say what was wrong with the claim and where they get an approval. The lady there told me, "No. There are some people that are new, and they're just confused. And that's not true. You're always welcome to a second opinion. No matter if it's our people or someone outside." She was very polite and very helpful, but I'm still hoping that I'd get my second check.

The pool pumps in a house that we are in the process of selling were not running. I called American Home Shield on a Friday, and a technician was here on a Tuesday. He fixed it and left, so that was a good experience. However, we had another house where we had a cooktop that we turned in as a problem on the 20th of July. At first, they told us that the valve was no longer manufactured for our cooktop, and they were offering me $343. Then, they said, “Or we can get your valve out of your store, and we can have it rebuilt and that’ll be another eight weeks."
I did my homework too and found a valve for our cooktop and the valve we had to go with was for a high-altitude valve. I informed AHS that a high-altitude valve will work for our cooktop that had a leaky valve. I said, “All you have to do according to Dacor and Dacor’s technical support people is remove the orifice from the inside of our old valve, and insert it in a high-altitude valve." So, that controls and regulates the amount of gas that the valve is releasing.
Then, they ordered the valve, and the technician that they finally got a hold of that works on Dacor came out the first time and said it was the valve. Then, he came out the second time with the valve, and he didn't have the proper tool to remove the valve. Then, he came out a third time with the valve and with the Dacor tool that he ordered, and he couldn't break something. He threw his hands up in the air and he said, “I’m gonna report your cooktop as unrepairable.” Then, the cooktop that they were offering us was a GE. They said that that was what they listed. Even though they will cover up to around $1,500 for appliance, they would not try and help us out and get us a high quality appliance to replace our high quality appliance.
We just bought a cooktop ourselves today, and they were going to send us a check for $900. However, I don't know where that check is. They told me it would be 7 to 10 days, and I've been waiting for a week. So, the repaying process is slow. Also, at the same house where the pool is, we had a double oven go out and it got replaced, but it wasn't of equal value. I had to pay $300 out of my pocket to get a stainless steel double oven.
Hi Karen,
Your concerns are understood regarding the delay in service to repair the cooktop. I would be glad to speak with you regarding the CIL offer and part delay.

We submitted the AC request to American Home Shield. It was like a leakage from the roof. The AC guy came, checked this leakage, and said that he fixed it and everything was okay. But in less than a week, it started again to leak. So we decided that it’s probably the roof. We invited the roof person. He checked roof, and he said that everything okay. And then he went to the attic, and said that it’s a clog in the AC air system. He said that it’s really very easy to fix. I told him that the AC guy already came and checked, and everything was okay. But the roofer insisted that it was what he saw.
I called the AC company and told them that their guy said that it was fixed, but apparently it wasn’t. And our ceiling was kind of half opened. It was a huge hole and everything wet. I tried to contact this AC company and it took them like one week to answer, and they said that they will try to do something. My husband sent them a couple of emails, but there was no response. We have all the pictures and we sent them to the contractor, but no response from them. So we just went ahead and fixed our ceiling recently. But then we claimed the second time with the insurance companies, and the person from the other company came and fixed this air conditioning stuff. But we had really very bad secondary damage from the first company.
Overall, it was a very good experience with American Shield. We just had two situations that time that were very bad. Once with this roof, and once we had a problem with the toilet leaking. And again, American Home Shield sent an experienced guy who came and said that there was nothing going wrong. It was also a leakage. We contacted this company again, and they sent a more experienced guy. They said it was a mistake of their person. But we didn’t put a claim on anything. It was okay.

American Home Shield sent out Comfort Heating and AC, and they found that the evaporator coil wasn’t working as it should be, so they put in an order to replace that. But I noticed a couple days before they came back that the entire floor was full of water. That was a little unusual. So maybe something wasn’t connected right or it wasn’t allowing to do what it’s supposed to do. Because it seems highly unlikely that a stuffed up drain would generate that much water. And then I had to continue to call them back out because the thermostat wasn’t working. It wasn’t turning off. The remedies for fixing it were things like opening up my vents. But to me, that’s not addressing the real issue. My vents were left open the same amount as they were before, why is my house not cooling? So it doesn’t seem to be a vent issue.
They were addressing things that weren’t directly related to what was happening. By the time they were done, they’d opened up the vents and they climbed the attic. The AC started to behave more like it used to. It’s not quite cooling as efficiently as it did, but I read up that whenever you change an evaporator coil, oftentimes, it’s not the right size as your initial unit. And they require more energy and can run longer. But everything’s fine. I used to have a contract with American Home Shield years and years ago, but I recently signed up with them a new contract about three months ago.

I had a plumbing issue and I submitted a claim for it with American Home Shield online. The process was easy. I did it on a Thursday or a Friday, and Lindsay Company, the contractor, came out the following Monday. Communication was good. There were things that needed to be added, which were recommended, because the new water heaters are different-sized than the old water heaters. So, we needed all new connections.
Then, based on where it is in the attic, and it is the one that was in the front, if you have to get to the other one, they said that it was probably because of the challenge to access the second one. Of course, it was recommended to go ahead and place that one now, because they've to come back out. Then, they have to charge to disconnect the first one and move it in order to do the second one. So, I wouldn’t say it was high-pressure, but it was very frustrating to end up with an $1,100 bill. Nevertheless, everything about it has been fine since then.
My pool service company, on the other hand, also came out through AHS. They said I've got something wrong with my salt cylinder and then I noticed that it was leaking. They had to replace a switch in my panel, because my remote was not working at all. Now, I ran everything through the switches to see if everything worked, and two of my things, my water feature and my water heater for my hot tub, still can’t work from my remote. I don’t feel like they really tested everything when they fixed the switch per se.

I called a claim in to AHS for my Whirlpool refrigerator which had a freezer button that was stuck. The indicator kept saying the door was open, but it was closed. The rep whom I spoke to was very helpful. The contractor who came thereafter was very knowledgeable. He got right to fixing my issue, completed the job in no time and explained to me what was the matter. The fridge has been fine since then.
Good afternoon Darlene,

American Home Shield's reps were good. They were very customer service-oriented and nice. I was having a problem with my air conditioning, and AHS sent a contractor who was very informative. The professionalism was good. He said I needed some Freon in my air conditioning unit, but I’m not exactly sure if he solved the issue. He said that he had fixed the capacitor, but I didn't see him do it. He said he replaced the capacitor for the air conditioning unit, but I was inside dealing with something. But the air conditioner is working much better.

We noticed that there were watermarks in the ceiling and we called it in at American Home Shield. They said they'd contact us within a day or two. We had a leak in our upstairs bathroom and it was coming down through the drywall, the ceiling and to the first floor. Super Rooter Plumbing & Sewer came in and they found a broken pipe, and so they had to open up the ceiling underneath it to get to it. Everything was really good. We just had the drywaller come out and drywall it. I would recommend AHS to friends.
Good Morning Michael,
Your feedback is more than appreciated. We are glad to hear about your experience and the repairs that are complete.

I had a claim for the hot water heater and because I couldn't remember my username and password, I did the claim over the phone. The reps were very helpful and I had no problems. Sirius Plumbing and Air was out the same day and it was great. The technician's name was Larry and he did a phenomenal job. He explained everything and he didn't mind that I have a 100-pound dog so that was great. Then they came back the next day because they had to get a part. Since the repair, I've had no problems.
Good afternoon Myra,
Thank you for providing us with feedback regarding your most recent American Home Shield experience. It is our goal to provide our customers with a great experience and team of contractors to complete the repairs. We hope you continue to enjoy!

The first call we had with AHS was the blower, and then the coil was the second call within the same week. The coil had a leak and needed $1,455 of Freon. I met the finance guy and the guy above and I think they're a great company. When they replaced the blower, it worked fine. But when I had somebody come out and clean the coil, three days later, the coil was leaking. The tech should’ve told me the first time when he came and replaced the motor that the coil needed to be cleaned the first time, not the next day.
I can’t prove anything, but I feel like the tech is the reason my coil started to leak, the Freon, whether it was intentional or not. And my home warranty don’t cover coil cleaning. So, when I had to get my coil cleaned, it was out of my pocket. Also the technician said, “You have a 20-year-old unit and you’re gonna put Freon in it, and chances are something else is gonna go on that unit. And it’s gonna leak Freon again and the price of Freon is ridiculous.” So, who in their right mind is gonna throw $1,155 at a unit? But is it gonna hold it? Within six months, it’s probably gonna need more. I told the tech, “Knowing this information, why can’t you refer that back to my home warranty company?"
I mentioned it to the tech that I was interested in buying a new unit, but I didn't wanna do it right now. I wanted to budget for it. Everything’s not resolved yet as far as the American Home Shield because I need them to pay out because I’m buying a new unit. This is my first claim and they hooked me up with a contractor right away. They did all their due diligence in that area. And I cried to the lady. I called her and I told her what was going on. She helped me through that and gave me good advice on doing the buyout. But I don’t know how much they're gonna give me towards my new unit. The unit is like $7,080 and I believe what the contractor said that they're only gonna put 400 down towards it, which is not a big.
I believe to buy that policy was about 400 and something dollars for the year, so it does pay for itself. But if I’m having to pay thousands of dollars, it’s not really paying for itself any longer. Also somebody from their side should’ve contacted me and got more information and got to know me as a person. I’m a single mom and I got two jobs. I just bought this house. I’m only 31. It’s a learning process for me. I’m a first customer and I pay my bills and I know I would definitely get a policy with them again for the rest of my home-owning time, so I think I’ll be a good customer for them to buy me the new AC.
The guy came and quoted me. He looked through my property and I vented to him my frustrations and everything. And they're not charging me for the sales tax. They cut me a lot of breaks, like my ductwork, but I’m gonna be paying the 7,000 whatever 80 dollars. But the bill would've been a lot more considering the ductwork that I need in my house because they have an add-on now. So, I feel like they get to know their customers and they have more of a heart and they're willing to work with you instead of just trying to get money from you.

My sump pump would not go off for some reason. H&K Plumbing came out after I filed a claim to American Home Shield. They were wonderful. They were very professional, was on time, didn't take them long at all to fix the problem, and went about their way and I was able to continue my day. Submitting the claim with American Home Shield went fine. He took my claim and let me know the company that was gonna come. I've been with American Home Shield on and off for six years. My mother always had Home Shield on our house. And as I got older, I went with American Home Shield and they do a great job. They come here, fix the problem, and if I have any problems, I'm able to call back and they send the technician back.

I had heard great things about American Home Shield, so I decided to try it --- and I'm still with them for three years now. When I had a leaking issue, I called them. The next day, I got a call to set up an appointment for Plumb Genius to come out. The contractor introduced himself and let me know what he was going to do. The guy was very detailed, and he was able to fix the washer. And then I had a second one come out who worked on the unit. But I might have to call them back out because it is still leaking.

AHS seems to pick the worse technician possible. They send over all the unprofessional ones that seems to not care. The technician comes by just to show up and give a sloppy diagnosis. I had a second opinion and each one seems to tell a different story. I try to call AHS and they said they would look into it and get back to me. But of course they never did or gave me any response. They keep on denying coverage based on these lousy technicians. Seems like they are trying to collect money and not pay up.

Unless you live in a major metropolitan area, forget about them. They send the wrong people for the required repair, then reduced my claim amount for the travel charge the repair company charged them even though it was AHS fault. Second claim, the provider refused to come out to my area and the request was cancelled without telling me. Now have to open another ticket and pay fee again. Their whole system is wrong, web page barely loads and call center is down more than it's up. Run away, far away.
I hate to hear that the warranty has not been beneficial to you Randy. I've sent you an email in an effort to resolve your issue. My name is Stacy and I look forward to assisting you.

I just got this company to cover my home and this is the first time I had an issue. I had to have my washer fixed. The first service man never called to say he would be late. I called AHS and they reset for the next day. I lost the whole Saturday morning to waiting. I left the house and half an hour later the service man from Sears called, no apology nothing, just he was 3 min away. I rushed back home, he couldn't find the problem and said to record when the problem happened again. As the washer was smoking I thought that would not be safe but did it the next day and recorded the smoking washer. I had to wait another week to get them to come out. The new man checked the recording and ordered parts.
It would take another week to fix. When they fixed it they told me they would have back to remove the trash and broken parts. They never came to get the trash, I called AHS and they said they would send them a notice. They came today but only to fix the washer and not pick up the trash. I called AHS and they said Sears doesn't take the trash and I would have to take care of it. This is the first time I've used them and I hope the last I'm warning people not to use this company as the service is terrible. I can't wait for my contract to be over so I can get a good company with good service.
I apologize for the inconvenience. I just sent you an email to obtain more information about your experience & assist with unresolved issues. I look forward to speaking with you.

The service overall was alright. It takes time till somebody shows up to do a repair like everywhere else. Cancellation fees however are the same as the full amount for a month of coverage and they didn't tell me this until after my last payment, even after I asked if any cancellation fees were involved. Lied to me first and then charged me an extra month for cancellation fees. I hope this is the last of it.
I certainly hate to hear that you have received less than satisfactory service & I apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks for sharing your feedback. Have a great week.

The point of carrying AHS is mainly for the HVAC system, right? For us anyway. Carried over 10 years. Made like 2 calls. Our AC condenser went out. Old Train unit, was way past it's life. We should have just replaced it right away in the winter instead of counting on AHS to cover repair or replacement. 102 outside, but AHS wouldn't make an "emergency" call to HVAC company to come out unless it was 105. And it took 3 days for someone to come out. And when they did, the tech assumed the caps were bad (didn't even test them). The compressor was bad. We were going to be charged about 800 bucks for freon as AHS only covered 10$/lb. Wanted to replace the unit and just take the coverage from AHS and apply to new system... this is where it falls apart...
AHS offered 500 bucks and said we had to use the same company that came out and assumed the caps were bad. No thank you. We've been sweating our butts off for 3 days, and you want us to go with the overpriced (to customer) sub par contractor? No chance. No Thank you. WILL NEVER CARRY YOUR WARRANTY AGAIN. And want all to know that it isn't worth it. On phone with AHS for hours... of course call got disconnected. Couldn't even cancel the warranty without hours of call time. What a joke. Better to know now than after another 50 years of home ownership.
Thank you for sharing your recent experience with AHS.

Experienced delayed service visits. Unprofessional and unhelpful contractors who acted like they were underpaid. Customer service for the company is inattentive. When I called to cancel, I was systematically placed on hold (I held for up to an hour on one call), and I had to call and dispute the math (simple) for the refund as they botched even that. Not worth it at all. I spent $150 on service calls which no work was complete. Getting put on hold is either a strategy or a poor operating department, but in disputing the refund, I was told 2-3 min and I had to hang up after 10 min. This is consistent.
I am sorry that we were not able to offer a resolution that you were pleased prior to your request to cancel. We hope this experience does not deter you from considering AHS in the future for your home warranty needs.

I made many calls into customer service I never got help. After reading this review on consumer affairs I got contacted by a representative who could finally help me. She was understanding resolved my issue by compensating me for my trouble. Resolution was great problem is the company's process for replacement takes way too long and even though they were able to compensate me do not feel confidence in the next issue and how fast it will be resolved. Not sure I will stay with this company for this very reason. Understanding they still compensated me for my trouble I still think that I would fall into the same issues if I need a replacement of anything they warranty in my home. It took me leaving a bad review from consumer affairs to make anything happen. Therefore I'm only giving them to more stars than the one-star review I gave them and I may consider not staying with them because I doubt they will change their processes.

I have had the worst experience with this company. There are better companies to work with for a home warranty. My water heater started leaking. I set up a request for a plumber to come out through their system. The plumber could not get me in the schedule for 5 business days. After I waited the plumber came and told me it would take up to 10 to 14 days for American Home Shield to order the replacement water heater, then they would call me to get me put back on the schedule. The plumber let me know he would get back to me with the added cost that would not be covered for things like code issues. After all was said and done it was going to cost an extra $250 for earthquake straps and a new expansion tank.
Feeling this was way out of range I got a second opinion. Turns out I did not need a new expansion tank because the one I had was put in 4 years after the old water heater. Plus to install a new one the plumber I called said it should be Not $50. Not trusting the plumber American Home Shield sent I chose the cash out option and paid to have the plumber I trusted put in a new water heater. I was told that a check would be processed and in order to cover the water heater in the future I would just need to send the invoice showing the work had been done. I received the invoice and found out the check could not be processed until I sent the invoice in.
The whole process is going to take over a month and if I would have chosen to go with American Home Shield's plumber it would have taken maybe longer to even get a water heater installed. I have been told other home warranty companies install same day. In my experience I would never do business or recommend this warranty company.
I certainly hate to hear that you have received less than satisfactory service. I will follow up with you as soon as possible in an effort to assist with unresolved issues. I just sent you an email. Thanks for your patience.

I would not wish this company on my worst enemy. A complete waste of money and time. I have had to use them three times, in which they immediately charge you $75 to even begin the service call process. They then partner with bottom-of-the-barrel service providers who may or may NOT show up when they are scheduled. Currently I have been without Air Conditioning for 3 1/2 WEEKS while their contracted A/C serviceman has ignored daily phone calls. I have spent a total of 4.5 hours on the phone with AHS trying to get resolution. Their call center is in Asia, and none of the CSRs speak English as a first language. They refuse to transfer the call to a supervisor, and no matter what you ask them, they read from their type-written script of answers. It's like talking to a wall.
The correct resolution in my case is for them to immediately contact another A/C repair service to correctly fix my problem, yet they refuse to do so. They have not even contacted me back in over a week, when it was promised that I would be contacted within 24 hours. I just looked up the business they contract A/C repair to last night - and the repair service has received an "F" from the Better Business Bureau, with complaints too numerous to mention. Ironically, I get weekly emails and mail from AHS reminding me that my contract is up for renewal in less than a month. REALLY? Why on EARTH would I pay them a single cent for their worthless service, and infuriating customer service? ZERO stars is the appropriate rating.
I apologize for the way we have handled your a/c work order Brent. My name is Stacy and I've sen you an email in a effort to resolve your claim. I look forward to assisting you.

I recently cancelled my contracts with AHS because I found them to be not customer focused. In my experience, the contractors the company works with unresponsive and slow to address issues. I also did not have good experience with their customer service. It was an awful experience to get AC systems repaired this summer. Eventually they approved me to use outside contractors because their contractors were unresponsive and could not do the job. Also, I am still waiting to be refunded for the cost I incurred and no one is able to tell me why it is taking long to get my money back. Not so customer focused! I don't recommend them at all. They were not there for me when I needed their services despite paying my monthly dues for the last 7 years. I had bad experience last year too. I should have quit then and saved my monthly dues for repairs.
I certainly hate to hear that you have received less than satisfactory service & I apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks for sharing your feedback. Have a great week.
