The air or heat would not come out. The technician diagnosed the problem on our heater and got the part. It worked perfectly. The claims submission with American Home Shield is simple. I go online and do it and I haven't had a problem. But there should be a better choice of people in the area that's contracted with them. Also, I was shocked by a couple of things that weren't covered that I would have thought would have been covered.
I had problems one time with a claim with a hot water heater. I've got a whirlpool bathtub and it's deep and wide. So I put a bigger hot water heater in my house to make sure I had enough water if my girls were taking a shower in the morning time at the same time that I want to fill up my tub. When it went out, they said that I had a commercial-sized one and they would not go back with a commercial size. I'm not anything commercial here. I bought it at Lowe's off the shelf and just went with a 120-gallon instead of a 90-gallon. I did put a little bit bigger one in to have more hot water and AHS considered it a commercial one and wouldn't cover the difference. They had to replace it with a smaller one. Now, I ain't got enough hot water in the mornings when I fill up my bathtub and the girls are taking a shower.
Thanks for letting us know how everything is going so far. Taking care of our customers is the main goal here at AHS. I am glad that you were happy with your experience up to this point. We look forward to servicing you in the future as needed. Take Care.

When we bought a new house, we were signed up with American Home Shield automatically, and we kept it going. I would definitely tell people, “Just sign up.” I usually submit claims online and it's so easy. All I have to do is punch in a few things and it’s perfect. One time, I had someone come for my stove and he did a good job with it. He was wonderful. He told me the issue was a control panel. He came back, and he fixed it before Christmas. I thought that was really good of him. I appreciate him.
Thank you for sharing your recent experience with us. We are happy that we were able to get the issue resolved for you. Our goal is to pair you with the best contractor that is knowledgeable and able to explain what is going on. We look forward to our continued business together. Have a good day.

City First Electric came out to repair an electrical outlet that wasn't working and everything got fixed in one visit. However, I've cancelled my contract with American Home Shield. They play bait-and-switch every single time we file a claim. They send someone out who says they aren't gonna be able to fix the issue and I'm gonna have to do this and that. We call AHS and they finally fix it. They've done that with three of our properties. We had rental properties with AHS and a person charged my tenant saying the issue wasn't covered. We had some very shady contractors that they sent out. We made complaints but they kept doing it.
The very last experience, which is why I cancelled American Home Shield, was when our washer broke down. They sent someone out and the person said that they were going to order a part 'cause it wasn't draining and spinning. Then we got an email from American Home Shield two days later saying they were denying my claim because Accord Appliance said that I broke my own washing machine and that it was neglect, it wasn't wear and tear. I was livid. I called American Home Shield back up and they said that was what Accord Appliance was saying. They couldn't do anything about it. We could get another opinion but they'd have to charge us another $100.
I called Accord Appliances 'cause I wanted specific details as to why they were saying that. The rep said, “We're not going to deal with you. You need to call American Home Shield. They're the ones that denied this. I'm going to transfer you right now." I said, "Please don't transfer me. I would like to speak to someone in your company." She said, "It's too early in the morning for me to argue with you," and hung up. This is the most awful experience I've ever had with a company. I've been in customer service for 35 years and I would never ever speak to a customer that way. We just got a new washing machine delivered because we just couldn't deal with that anymore.
We really appreciate you taking time to share your warranty experience. We do apologize that this request has caused you to cancel your warranty. Your feedback is important and we look forward to your possible joining the AHS team in the future. Have a great day!

The initial service on our refrigerator after the request was great. The service tech that came out, Josh, was really good. He got parts in, they contacted us, and he got the parts installed. Then, we had the same issue and he followed up with Frigidaire. The unit could not be fixed. AHS gave us five days to decide if we'd take the 1,900 and change or pick from a Whirlpool or a GE. But we were not given all the information we needed over the weekend to decide. There was nowhere for us to see which models were available. I had to make a decision without being informed and that's where I'm less than impressed.
We ended up having to wait until Monday and call. Then, we were told that there's only GE at the time and there's this one model that was available. We've had that GE model at our old house and it's a step down from the Frigidaire that we had so it put us in the position of going out. We purchased a new refrigerator and then we filled out the thing that we want to be reimbursed up to the amount that they gave us. They said they'd be sending us information. I did that on Monday and it's now Wednesday. I still haven't gotten anything from them. The communication and the service after the fact have been very poor. I've already spent $3,800 on a new refrigerator and yet, I have nowhere to submit the receipt for AHS to start on their end to reimburse me.
Thanks for sharing your experience. We appreciate it.

I had an issue with the drum for the dryer and when the technician came, he identified the cause and put the order for replacement. The arrival of the parts took some time. He then came back to install the replacement part. The total process took around two weeks but it was a very good experience. The technician was very professional and timely, so he was very good.

Budget AC Heating and Plumbing came out to look at my furnace. It was kicking on, but it wasn't lighting and staying on. They replaced the fire starter, the pin-like thing that was in there. They were here for about 20 to 30 minutes and were professional. It’s working like it should be. People should try American Home Shield. It's just that I disagree with the part we have to pay it constantly when I don't use it. I may use it once a year, but I'm paying a whole year contract. Nonetheless, I would recommend them.
Thanks for sharing you experience and thanks for recommending us.

Mr. Rooter Plumbing was fast, prompt and got the work taken care of. The online process of submitting a claim to American Home Shield worked out pretty well. It was really simple. The issues I had were outside of the house, but the techs picked up after themselves. They were dressed professionally and maintained themselves in a professional manner. I've put in three claims to American Home Shield recently, and they've been very supportive in getting someone over here to take care of things. I have told my family about it.

Submitting claims to American Home Shield is simple once you get them on the phone call. It takes probably 15 minutes or more to get somebody on the phone but the biggest problem I have is the language barrier. The people do the best they can but it's difficult to go through that process. We had GE Appliances come out for an issue and that was probably the easiest claim we’ve had. It was a GE technician so he knew exactly what was wrong and he fixed it in one day. He was spot-on, had good communication skills, knew what he was doing and respectful. I could communicate with him and there was no problem with the language barrier.
When I had a dishwasher issue, the first guy who came out didn’t know what he was doing and the second guy may have been Russian. He didn’t speak any English and when I was talking to him, he looked at me and nodded. That didn't make any sense at all. I had a stranger in my house that I couldn't communicate with. He was on the phone with whoever sent him out, speaking Russian. He was visibly upset and I got concerned because I didn't know what he was saying. I felt threatened. I was thinking that if he gets any more violent, I would have to take whatever necessary means to remove him from my house. I'm a 58-year-old man. I've never experienced anything like that before, so it was weird. If I cancel AHS, the language barrier is gonna be one major reason because welcoming people into your house that you can't communicate with is never a good thing.
AHS needs to work on communication on the phone and with individuals coming into your house. Especially in the kind of world we live in now, you gotta be able to talk to people. Aside from this, the length of time to get out is also a problem. I had a garage door issue and whatever business the contractor had, they didn’t put AHS as a priority. It took them two weeks at most to get someone out. It was a very small outfit. There wasn’t anything on the side of the guy’s truck and he leaked oil on my driveway. Since it's AHS, you have to try to repair it first. He replaced the part but it didn't work. It took a month to get a garage door opener. That was the time when I was getting ready to cancel the policy because I could have called a local garage door opener company and had my garage door fixed in 24 hours.
In the summertime, we had an issue with one of the air conditioning. It took 10 days for someone to get out. That's ridiculous when you got a problem with heating or even with the garage door. Maybe that's common with homeowner warranties but I need to investigate to see because at the time of need, you need things. The vendor selection of AHS is not very good. It is not top quality nor top vendors.I haven't had to use AHS much till recently, so I haven't complained before. My contract is coming due in March and after this most recent experience, I am gonna start looking next month and doing a comparison with other carriers. Because once AHS gets into motion, it's fine. But you're in a time of need, you can't wait weeks or multiple days to have someone come out, even for the microwave. It still took over a week and it's something I use every day. I wanna talk with other companies about the cycle time.
Greg,

We lost our heat on Christmas Eve morning but there wasn't anything wrong with the heater. Our house has a tube system that runs across the basement floor and into the laundry room where it drains the dehumidifier. Somehow, that got plugged. I thought we were looking at a freezing Christmas. I was trying to figure out how that was going to go with a 78-year-old husband and two dogs. I called the number right away at 4:30 in the morning when I woke up because I was so cold. The answering service person said they would call me back at 9 o'clock. He called at 8:00 and I almost missed his call because I wasn't expecting anything till 9:00. I left a message asking him if he could help us out. He was there for me. That to me was a real rubber meets the road kind of thing.
When the tech from Brookfield came, he identified that the water had backed up into the furnace. All we had to do was drain it. The tech said a pump was needed and we were gonna do that. We were troubleshooting the thermostat too. The thermostat was old so we asked the tech to put on a new one. That was not covered by the warranty so we paid for it. The tech was great and he solved the problem. We'd hire him again. I was really grateful that I got the number for him right away. American Home Shield has a very good consumer service.

I needed the coverage because if anything went wrong, I want it to be repaired without having some serious bill hit me. For instance, the AC went out or plumbing issue, I don't wanna be stuck with a heavy bill. So, I said, “I'd better go ahead and get some coverage. That way, if something will go wrong, I can try to get it fixed.” The first issue was the AC made some noises and that it was frosting a lot on the outside of the unit. Also, in the summertime, when I turn the AC on, I would have some kind of leakage down in the basement. I went online, and then I called in and submitted the claim. I wanted to be specific about it. That’s why I called the operator.
Xtreme Heating & Air Conditioning is a good company. The last thing that bothered me was with the noise. It's still there and the unit doesn't freeze up. But the tech said something about something needed to be replaced, and then I had to pay a fee for the coolant. That was the only downside to that because I'm paying monthly services for this home service thing, and I didn't get anything. But the tech explained to me how to look at it. He was a good technician and was very knowledgeable. I love American Home Shield.

We had issues with the microwave and the fridge. California Appliance came in and they were able to take care of both of them on the first call. They solved the issue in the fridge. The microwave was acting in a very funny way despite us being able to set the timer and all. The gentleman repaired it. But we had a follow-up issue with it where it started to do the same funny thing again. It did not seem to microwave despite it showing that the timer was set. We haven't had them back out yet because of the surge in California in the lockdown. But they've been very helpful. American Home Shield has been very equally helpful. So I'm happy with the product and the providers. If one of the vendors didn't work for us, American Home Shield found another vendor. So that has been good. Pricing does continue to creep up, but that is what it is.

In July of 2020 we needed a new gas range for our home. We contacted American Home Shield to start a claim. Within a couple days a technician came out to diagnose the gas range, and said he needed to order some parts and it will take about a week. A week goes by and he comes back to install the parts, but what he replaces The new parts that does not repair the problem, so the repair company recommends replacement of the appliance to AHS and it is approved. Ok great!!! No. This is where the fiasco begins!!!! My wife and I wait for AHS to tell us what the new appliance is going to be and what our final is cost will be. AHS will be replacing our gas range with a lesser brand and not mention the new range will be electric???? Ummmm No!!!!
We then decide to take the buyout and AHS will give us an average cost of replacement and that comes to $350. Ok fine whatever!!!! My wife and I go purchase a new gas range from Lowe's, and wait a couple days for the new appliance to be delivered. New appliance is delivered all hooked up and ready to use. We filed the proper receipts with AHS as per their request to finalize the buyout, and we wait. Remember this is at the end of July 2020. October 2020 we call AHS to find out about our buyout of $350 and where it is. To find out AHS claims they did not receive the receipts of the new purchase, so we referred back to the confirmation email AHS sent us the first time and the associate claims she can not find it.
Ok we will re-send the receipts and once again we get a confirmation email stating they have received our information. Associate tells us that it will take a couple days to go through the process, and once approved to look for a check in 2-3 weeks. Ok great!!!! Fast forward to December 2020 it has been longer than 2-3 weeks and still no buyout of $350. We contact AHS just before Christmas 2020 and the associate says that she will personally handle our claim and make sure we will receive our check. She states that she will contact us the week of the 4th of January 2021 to make sure we did in fact received our check. Can you guess what has happened???? Once again no buyout check and the same associate who said she will contact us.....well she never called.
It is now January 12 2021 and I have called both Monday 1/11/21 and today Tuesday 1/12/21 and we are getting the same things said to us that someone is looking into the matter and they will call us back!!!! I was asked to rate this company/service with Consumer Affairs but they do not give you something to rate with a ZERO!!!! American Home Shield is a JOKE of a company!!!! It is a complete waster of your hard earned money and your time!!!! Once this matter is corrected, and we do somehow get our money this service will be cancelled!!!! I will tell everyone I know to cancel theirs or to never buy a home warranty ever.
The only time you will ever have a home warranty is when you purchase a new home, and then let it run its course!!!! American Home Shield has poor well I can not say poor that is too nice. AHS customer service is a complete joke!!!! Not one associate has called us back when they say they will, and they give you what you want to hear. That your check is in the mail!!!! We are at the point of hiring an attorney to recoup the loss. AHS needs to train the associates better and have a better claim service regardless of repair or replacement or the buyout option.
Hi Michael,

The washing machine went out. Originally, they thought it was the start button but come to find out the start button was a hard piece of plastic that pushed the working piece of it. It was extremely brittle. They even tried to remove it to replace the part but it crumbled. When it did, it shorted out a printed plate and at that point, the washer was completely useless. The repairman contacted American Home Shield and said that the washer was beyond repair. I really enjoyed him. He was a great guy. If I dropped American Home Shield now and needed a repairperson for appliances, I would call Frix Appliance Repair Service.
American Home Shield offered to replace the washer with a lockout of which would’ve been another front load. My wife didn't want another front load. She wanted to go back to a top load. They gave me the choice of either and came up with a monetary amount. My wife wasn't happy with what the money would buy. It was little less than 650. She wanted a more expensive model. I'm fine with the monetary amount that they named considering the unit was 14 years old. My concern is they want you to buy upfront and submit them a receipt showing that you did purchase something. If your car gets wrecked and if you don't owe anything on it, it's your choice whether you wanna put the money in your pocket and drive the vehicle like it is or if you wanna sell the vehicle and put the money towards a down payment. That should be your choice.
Nonetheless, on Friday, December 18th, I immediately went out and purchased a washer. On Saturday morning, the 19th, I took pictures of the receipts and the warranty card, wrote my dispatch number on it and sent it to them by email which is what they wanted on December 19th. I got an email verifying that they did receive it but they said it's gonna be 21 days. If they could have me a washing machine in five days, why can't they have made the check in five days? Now, I'm out the cash for 21 days and that's not fair. But other than that, I'm happy with American Home Shield. They're a good company and I've already recommended them to several people. They have treated me fair every time I've dealt with them.

American Home Shield is simple, easy, and intuitive to use. Every repair has been done within 24 to 48 hours for the initial consult. No longer than a week did I have to go without any machinery. I had a repairman through them that came out for my washing machine last year. He found that there was an issue, came back about a week later with the part, repaired it, and everything was good to go. I just paid the one-time fee.
Now, I'm brand-new in dealing with a furnace versus a heat pump. I wanted to make sure that what I was trying to work the heat or make the heater do was absolutely what it was supposed to do. I was a little nervous trying to figure the gas out. I went onto the site and filled out a quick form. I got a person from K & S Heating & A/C to call me back within a couple of hours and then he was able to come the same day and take a look at it. The request was kind of unusual, it wasn't necessarily a repair. But he walked me through the heater, told me what I was looking at, and set things accordingly to be best practice. It was really nice. He was not condescending at all. He just helped and answered questions.

After a while that he couldn’t fix it any more, American Home Shield decided to give me the money to buy a new one. Even though I bought a new one, it's nowhere near the one that I had. On the other hand, I love the service done by Service Mechanical of Tidewater and MEP Home Services. When I called for my heating, the guy repaired my unit within 40 minutes. When I submit claims, I prefer talking to someone, ‘cause sometimes, I may want to use another service that's been in here before rather than a random someone that I may not like.

Our heating unit was not getting hot and cold air was blowing out. We wanted to do a preseason heating check to see if the service people could find an issue or if there was an issue at all. A guy with Four Seasons Heating & Air came initially but he did not fix the issue. It took the service company almost three months to come out to even provide the service. Their guy said that everything was fine and that there was no issue with our heat. But the next day, the unit was still blowing out cold air so we filed a claim for someone else to come out and check on the heat. This time, Service-All came out.
We filed the claim on Friday and a guy came out on Monday. He was very timely and professional. He said that there was an issue. Our heat was still hooked up as propane but we didn't have a propane tank or anything like that. We needed to convert it to gas. The rest of our house is on natural gas. The guy ordered some kind of part and converted it to natural gas. He fixed the issue. Apparently, the first guy that came out didn't know anything about all that. Since the Service-All guy came out, our unit has been working fine and we haven’t had any issues. The repair has significantly helped us. We're not having to hook up electric heaters anymore. That was driving our electric bill out of the roof. Now, we're not having to worry about the electric bill being so high.

The only issue I have is when you call or go online, the first thing they want is money. When you get to talk to a robot, they will say that you have to pay your copay. So they're more interested in money than talking to the customer and knowing what their customer's problems are. You also can't talk to a body. I understand right now that we're in different times but still, it'll be nice to talk to somebody instead of a robot all the time.

We had an air conditioner that would shut off. We used American Home Shield and they took care of that. The next day, it was fixed. Recently, I have a refrigerator that has been making a lot of loud noise. The repairman believes it's a manufacturer defect and he has ordered the part to fix it. I submitted the claim on Friday and on Saturday, I got an email from American Home Shield saying I needed to call their number. On Monday, I called and they explained that because the issue was a manufacturer defect, it's not covered. So, I called the repair guy back to get a quote of what it would cost to fix things anyway. He gave me a quote and I told him to go ahead. Other than this, I would continue using American Home Shield. My son who referred me to them has used them many times and he absolutely loves the warranty.

My oldest son had moved in with me and he didn’t know the garage door was a remote one, so when he pulled it, it got off-track. He tried to straighten it up and pulled it all the way down. I called American Home Shield and they told me that it might not be covered. That was fine with me. I liked that they were honest. They still sent Flash Garage Door out.
When the guy came, I didn’t even have a garage door open. Then the thing that’s on the side of the wall to push to open up the garage was cracked half in two. He gave me one remote control, which I asked him for it and I paid him for. He showed me that one of the rollers on the door had wire wrapped around them, and one of them didn’t. I never had any repair done to the garage, so evidently, that’s the way they built it. He did a good job. I would like for him to come back and replace my garage door when I get the money. Overall, AHS has been pretty prompt. When I call in, they say someone will contact me within 24 hours. They always do that.

I watched the guy from RK Plumbing do the work and when he tried to snake the lines that go into the sewer line, he said it was going into the house. American Home Shield was going to cover the work if the block was under the house because it was affecting the toilet. And we looked all over to try to find the line that goes out to the septic tank. I even pulled out papers from the previous owners but we couldn’t find it. The tech then finally decided that when they built an addition inside the garage, it covered up that line. And I agreed with him. He then said that we were going to have to dig a new one and run it out there. I talked to American Home Shield and they said they couldn't cover the work. So, I paid RK Plumbing and they did great. It was a lot of money but got to do it.
All in all, American Home Shield has been terrific. But with them, you can only make changes to cover outside stuff, like the septic tank, within the first year of the contract. And when we bought the house, the previous owner bought us the first year and I really didn't bother to look at it. We've also never had a septic tank before. So, it makes me want to call other companies and ask how much it would cost to cover outside stuff. But other than that, American Home Shield has been very responsive. I've used them four times and I had no complaints at all.

Sears came out for the refrigerator but they couldn't fix the problem even though they put a new controller board in it. When I contacted Sears to say that they didn't fix it, they told me to call somebody else. That was crazy. Then Montezuma came out and they were great. They were professional and they knew their business. They were quite different from Sears. They diagnosed the problem and sort of fixed it. They discovered two additional problems while they were there. The hooks on the doors were missing and the shelf was broken. The freezer part should be at 0 degrees Fahrenheit and 37 degrees Fahrenheit for the refrigerator part, but the temperature wasn't holding steady. The refrigerator would go to 42 or 44 degrees, and then the freezer would go negative 3 to plus 5. The problem when it does that is that it overloads the defroster. So it's a funky thing.
American Home Shield offered a cash settlement, and I've gone ahead and purchased the replacement refrigerator. Then I supplied American Home Shield with the invoice. Overall, I have been delighted with the coverage I've received from American Home Shield. I'm also delighted with the responsiveness, the professionalism, and the quick solutions to the problems when I have them.

We’ve had good results with using American Home Shield and submitting a service request is not difficult. I go right online and use the step process that's on there. I wish there's an app though. It would make it a lot easier than using a website. I had an issue one time with a company that was belligerent with me. It was a private company and when I talked to Home Shield, they sent out another company.
I recommend AHS all the time. When people are having issues and they're paying a ton of money out of their pocket, I brag a little bit that we only have to pay $75 here and there to have someone come out and at least give us peace of mind. 9 times out of 10, it's something simple. AHS doesn’t cover water heaters or some other things though. They cover a certain amount and it helps and it probably breaks even almost by monthly payment type. But I wish they would cover a little bit more cost-wise on certain things. Other than that, it's a great company.

There was a problem with the dishwasher and water was running on the floor. I did a claim online and the American Home Shield website was okay and was pretty easy to use. They gave me the name and the phone number of the company that would do the service. The company was to get in touch with me, which they did. For the most part, they were pretty good.
American Home Shield is a little bit expensive and the $100 deductible can sometimes be a bit much. If you have a problem and you could find someone to do it, the cost would probably be less. I had problems with my garage door and I was going to call American Home Shield. But I called the garage door company first and they only charged me $40. Other than that, I've had a positive experience and I often refer people to American Home Shield. It is worth it if something breaks to have a reputable company come out and not somebody who is just gonna try to take advantage of the situation.

My dishwasher burned itself out during the last wash cycle. It burned plates and melted items in it. I called American Home Shield that I needed service on the dishwasher. I spoke to the agent because going online is difficult. They hold a great deal as well when you call. But I figured it would be best that I just hold on. And I told them that I had a problem, and they immediately set up a contractor.
Sears was excellent. They were on time and knowledgeable. It was only one gentleman, but when he needed help, he called his partner. He looked at everything. He hoped it could be fixed, but there were just too many parts. There was a number of items when he saw that. He checked it. We turned off the electricity to make sure. He listed all the parts that needed to be replaced in order to fix it. He said, "You don't really know in the end if it can be fixed. Hopefully, it can. But these are all the parts." He had to call AHS to tell them the condition of the machine, as well as all the parts. And that was when I gathered it would cost more than just to replace it.
When AHS sent me the email, it only gave me the two choices, "You buy it or buy it through us." And I didn't know that if you buy it through AHS, it is delivered by one party, then installed by another. We have to now find a way to dispose of the dishwasher. I will not ever do that again. It was a massive process because we called, I was on hold for hours and hours just trying to find out the process and how this works. Finally, a young lady helped me and told me where it was coming from. Thank goodness it was all cleared because they had no idea it was being delivered to the wrong place. It was messy. The dishwasher was delivered this morning. And now we are waiting for the contractor. I already called to call us to install. And then when they install, then we have to figure out a way to dispose of it. Because we said, "Look, we'll pay you," but the contractor does not dispose of anything.
Here, we have to go take it to a recycling center. Hopefully, I don't have to go through any of this again with any appliances. But if I do, I'll just buy it myself and have AHS reimburse me because then whoever you buy it from, they install and take out the old one and just take it with them, and you don't have to worry about it. The dishwasher was here. They had it delivered. And they are coming to install it. It's just more work on our part. It's hard to try to find a way to discard this dishwasher.
Get AHS. We've had it for 10 years or so, if not more. It's a good insurance company. It made sense. It's just that when something actually happens, they just need to give a bit more information, but they do. And if you have to get a representative, it must be overseas or something, you just hold for a long time. But when you have to, you have to.
Thanks for sharing your warranty experience. My name is Stacy and I have just sent you an email as I would like to contact you in an effort to assist with a resolution.

The blower and motor of the heater weren't working so I called American Home Shield and told them that it seized up. I felt like talking to someone so they could understand what I was going through instead of just typing it in on my computer. I explained that the heat would turn on and kick off five seconds later and it kept doing that. It took a little bit, but I understand the process being an insurance type company. AHS sent Complete Home Services out. They saw that I needed new parts. They got the new parts and they installed them relatively quickly.
This young kid from Complete Home Services was very knowledgeable, clean and he was about as quick as he could be. He took my call. He was actually away in Hampshire and said that it was going to take him a few days. But he said that as soon as he'd come back, he'd get the ball rolling, look at the issue, see what I need, get what I need, and install it. It took a week to get the part installed. Most of the process was waiting on the parts to come into the supply house but Complete Home Services did great work.
American Home Shield charges you $700 for the year for coverage on your stuff and then you have to pay another $125 service request fee before anyone can even come out and look at the issue. If they come out and look at it and determine that it doesn't need to be fixed, then you're out of the 825, and nothing got done. But they got me a technician to come out and got the service done.

The claims submission with American Home Shield could be done better, especially if you're submitting a request for service online. They should have timely updates as to the status of what was going on because whenever I tried to call them, I spent maybe five days calling and sitting on hold for 45 minutes to an hour to get someone. Most of the people that I spoke to in the beginning, were usually outsourced somewhere. So they're pretty much going off a script and don't have any kind of authority to make any decision. They would say they forwarded my request over to another department and I wouldn't hear anything from them. So that prompted me to call them again.
In my last experience with American Home Shield, I was frustrated with the customer service but as far as them actually providing the service, I was satisfied with it. It was an ordeal trying to figure out what AHS was going to do with the furnace if they were going to replace it or repair it. But they decided to repair it. Kevin's Plumbing was very helpful and really professional. They did a good job. Overall, AHS is a good service to have for the money that you're paying for. So I would recommend it to friends and colleagues if they were looking for one.

My refrigerator's ice dispenser wasn't dispensing. A tech came out and had his mask on in my house. He was really friendly and knowledgeable. I have a split refrigerator. The seal on one side was keeping the refrigerator door from closing. The tech did a replacement and used something that reminded me of a dryer to fix the problem so that it wouldn't continue to bother me and have issues later on. He did that the same day. He was perfect.

The dryer wouldn't tumble. It wouldn't start to spin and it's a gas dryer. I contacted American Home Shield and they sent Calvary out here. It was relatively quick. The dryer was giving off an error code, which was easy to look up. We looked it up and the guy came out here, we told him and that was it. He didn't have to take it apart. He didn't do anything. He put it on to see that it wasn't tumbling, he ordered the part, and that was it. And then, he came back a couple of days later and installed it, and it was fine.
The $125 service call is a bit much, considering he didn't need to do anything, and he was here for 90 seconds and then left. If he was here for a while and diagnosed it, hooked up a machine, diagnostics or something, I would get it. But he walked in, we told him what the code was, and he left. My husband is an engineer so it's easy for him to look at these things and go, "This is what it is and this is how you fix it." We could have done it ourselves. I could have just ordered the part for $250 and done it ourselves.
We have two air conditioning units. When you set up the plan, you should find out if that coverage covers both units or not. And from what I understand, AHS covers both of my units. I didn't have to get a separate policy for the other unit. That's what they told me when I was questioning before I signed up. I kept that screenshot and I'm hoping that if something ever happens, they are going to uphold that.
And the other one is about what they are willing to pay out for an appliance. I worry about if it was not fixable, is the amount that they are going to pay out going to be sufficient to cover the replacement cost of an appliance? Especially after you've paid $125 service call. That is obviously going to be deducted from what they are going to give to you. So at some point, you have to look up and go, "Okay, well, is it going to be worth it?" That is probably something AHS would need to look at also.
If you have a $15,000 wall stove, odds are they are probably not going to replace the $15,000 wall stove. And if you can afford a $15,000 wall stove, you probably don't need to have AHS. I have a microwave oven in wall combo. It would cost me probably about $2,500 to replace that. So, if something goes wrong with that, are they going to cover it? What am I going to get towards replacing that combo? And that is not clearly listed in any of their documentation on their website or within their contract.

It's a very convoluted process. I had to call three times just to get AHS to cooperate. They wanted to give me a check for a price that they would normally be able to purchase the appliance for, which would not work for consumer. They wanted to give me $200 less than what I could buy it from the store. So, it didn't make sense. Then I spoke to management and they agreed to give me a retail price amount to purchase the refrigerator. My shower upstairs was leaking into the downstairs, into the kitchen. Bestway Mechanical had to come out three times. The first time, the plumber didn't really fix anything. He just told me what was the problem and what I could do to remedy the problem. But then they came out two more times, and the plumbers that came out were really thorough and they completed the job. I haven't had any more leaking since the last time. Overall, American Home Shield is a great warranty to have and it covers a lot. I'm pretty pleased with the work that they do. It's also really easy to file a claim. I do them online and I usually get an appointment within about 24 to 48 hours.

Safe Cali Plumbing wasn't able to fix my problem and they lied about a lot of different things. After the negative experience with Safe Cali, I ended up calling for the most recent service to see if I could get Accent Plumbing back. They were fantastic and they fixed both issues right away. One was a pipe leak and the other was a cartridge in one of the faucet handles that needed to be changed. There has been no additional leakage of water from either. In the most recent incident, it was easy to schedule an appointment with Accent. The techs showed up on time. They were respectful, COVID-safe and again they fixed the issue right away. They also gave me a paper copy receipt and it was a seamless process.
I've had other American Home Shield calls and everything has been great except for Safe Cali and for a claim on an AC unit that was leaking. I ended up having to make several phone calls to American Home Shield for the latter. The contractors weren't bringing a tall enough ladder to get to the roof and they would cancel the job because they didn't have that. It could have been an easy fix and just prescreening who had a tall ladder. Also any time I make a call to AHS, it felt like it's an hour-long call. There's a lot of time waiting to be contacted back or they need to check things on their end.
At the end of the day, all of my issues have been fixed and most likely for cheaper than for me going through private pay. It's helpful to have insurance in case large things break down and I might incur a lot of expenses where it feels like having American Home Shield is a safety net financially. If you are able to afford and you don't mind paying premium prices, then it might be less of a hassle to not go through insurance, at least for more of the minor issues.

American Home Shield has been good. However, some of their contractors have been idiots. What happened was we got a microwave that is attached to our wall in the kitchen and it wasn't working. We had an appliance repairman come out and said, "Oh, it was the outlet." We proved this by plugging it into a different outlet. Then we had the electrician come out because we had to have a second call, made another deductible, and he fixed the outlet. Then we had to have the guy come out again and look. He had to replace a 15-cent piece, which he could have caught the first time.
My wife did the speaking with AHS. She said the phone calls went fine. AHS answered everything and they made sure that got resolved. We got the work done. It was a bit of the aggravation, but with everything else, we expect a bit of aggravation. But AHS should make sure their contractors aren't lazy. Before, if they come to a site, so they don't have to be recalled again, to make sure that they checked everything.
Our goal is to pair you with the best contractor that will provide a quick and final resolution. Thank you for sharing your recent experience with us regarding your service request. I had a clog problem in my master bathroom. I called that claim in and that was very easy to deal with. I got an email that a contractor was contacted and that they were going to call me for an appointment. I got ahold of them because it was right within the holidays so it was kind of a rough time. A tech came right out and he was fine. He was very professional and his work was very good. I would recommend American Home Shield. Repairs can run high. With the home warranty, all you have to pay besides the 500-some dollars a year is $75 for the service call. American Home Shield pays the rest of the bill.

Every time I have an issue, there's a nightmare with it. The first thing I turned in was an air conditioning claim. American Home Shield bought an air conditioning unit to replace in my house. I had to pay $1,000 out of pocket because they said my house wasn't up to grade or whatever. The contractor that they hired stole the unit that they bought for me and installed a unit that was illegal in the state of Georgia. I had to have Georgia Power come out and they said that we couldn't install an air conditioning unit with this rating. We have to have a 14 SEER in the state of Georgia and the contractor installed a 13 SEER, which proved that the air conditioning unit that they installed was not the one that American Home Shield bought.
The contractor never admitted to the fact they stole the unit. They installed a brand that American Home Shield didn't use. So I had two years' worth of issues with that. The one that they installed caused my utility bill to go up. I had Georgia Power come back out and they did an energy audit at my house and they said that the air conditioning was drawing 50% more power than it should. That meant there was something happening and it turned out there was something arcing in the system. I got no reimbursement for all that, so I had to pay. The contractor came back and changed something on the air conditioning unit so that it wouldn't arc and the power bills went down some, but not a lot. But they said there was nothing else I could do and there was no recourse against the contractor who stole the unit.
Water was pooling in the cabinet under the sink. The plumber came out was great. I liked him a lot and he was a nice young man. He said it was not a plumber's fix. It was for a dishwasher repairman. So the ticket was flipped to dishwasher repairman. The guy that was sent out for the dishwasher was Russian and didn't speak any English. I kept pointing to the water under the sink and he ran the dishes again and saw the water under the sink. I asked him where the leak was coming from and he just wouldn't answer me. He kept touching all the pipes and just shook his head and shrugged his shoulders. When he left, I asked him if I could use the dishwasher and he just nodded.
The dishwasher repairman said that the dishwasher was in a total state of disrepair and couldn't be used, which was not true. He knew that it was not unusable 'cause he ran my dishwasher and he sat here long enough to run a complete cycle. So it was usable but it was just leaking under the sink. He told American Home Shield that it was eaten up by rodents. It's not eaten up at all by a rodent. It's perfectly fine. He just left and did nothing. So now, they are saying that it's not covered. But I'm not asking to repair the dishwasher. I'm trying to figure out why there's water under my sink.
AHS sent me an email and I wasn't able to respond back. So I called them yesterday and the rep told me to fax a letter to a certain number, send pictures and explain what was going on. So I sent a picture of the dishwasher in perfect working order and the sink. She said that they would review it and call me back. The lady that I talked to was sweet. The people that I talk to on the other side of the phone are generally very kind and they are doing the best they can. I also had a guy that came out to fix the stove and he did a good job. He was a nice guy. But overall, American Home Shield needs to do a better job of qualifying the contractor and make sure the people speak English.
American Home Shield cut corners and I always have to pay more because the grade of the appliances they replace are builders-grades. So if you have something nice, they will have to change that. I bought a sink and they were supposed to replace my faucet with like-kind in quality. They gave me a builder's thing but I had a really nice one. They said that if I wanted that, I would have to pay for it out of pocket, which I did.

Sometimes, it's more annoying in trying to get the right person out to the house. With my heat claim, I kept telling AHS that the tech said we needed the type of person for a dual-zone unit. They kept sending out people who didn't specialize in that. I didn't have heat for three weeks upstairs. Then I spent $1,200 on my heating system after the fourth person came out. I found that they didn't cover the part that needed to be replaced. It would be a lot easier for some situations like this where I could have found someone that could get to me quicker. I could have been a whole lot warmer and $1,200 less and a little bit quicker time period. However, I've got a dishwasher, a fridge, and the plumbing issues taken care of.

Then, he came out and pulled all my plugs and switches. I was very happy with them.
Submitting the claim with AHS was also pretty easy. I made my call and got an appointment made. I was a little hesitant with this last company because they were not a local company. But I later found out that they had a branch down here that was local and I was very impressed with the electrician that came out. Other than that, I live by myself and I'm an older person. We had to call and tell them that I'd need heat before three weeks from now. So they got it reassigned and this JW Brower came up the next day. They did a good job with the furnace repair. They should reach out to you. If they don't reach out to you, call them.” I've never had a problem with them. When I moved in May, the people who lived here before were not very kind to their appliances. They washed their dog bedding before they left. So, I couldn't even put a load of laundry in the washer or the dryer without getting American Home Shield out to take a look and to clean it out. It was just disgusting.
They had to put new gaskets in. They were wonderful. They cleaned it all up and it was just great. Then along came the refrigerator. It wasn't making ice cubes. Then it was making ice cubes, but the ice cubes weren't coming down through the chute. One of the problems was that they had put a new mechanism in, but it was the wrong size for the ice cubes that were being produced. Who would have known that unless you sat there and watched? Which is what my daughter ended up doing. But everything is fine. I am planning on renewing with AHS for another year.

Our recent claim was very quick and professional. American Home Shield's communication was very effective, and they make it simple. Brian was very good. I'm adopting a baby and I asked him if he wears a mask. He said yes. So, I was able to ask the question of what kind of things that they wear. I asked him did he wear gloves. He said yes. And then they did not wear shoe covers, but I told him I would provide him shoe covers, and he didn't have any issues with it. I have referred three people to AHS already, said how great the services are and that I trust AHS to pick the right people to come into my home.

We have three toilets in the house and one toilet in the apartment. For the last couple of weeks, we've had problems on and off with toilets clogged. We bought an auger recently and that was able to clear out the clogs in the toilets. But then we had a clog that even the auger wasn't doing anything for. It was one toilet that was blocked and I filed the claim on a Friday. On the claim, I said that I would like to have all four toilets looked at because all of them at one time or another have had clogs that were difficult, if not impossible, to clear.
I didn't hear anything from AHS. Then I called their number on Saturday and the message I got was that they don't work on the weekends unless it's an urgent matter, like sewage in the basement, raw sewage. I left a message on that number as well as their office number and I didn't hear anything else. I called them back on Monday and they just called me today with the dispatch time of tomorrow, Thursday, between 1:00 and 5:00. But now, three out of four of our toilets are clogged so it is urgent and I'm terrified something will happen to the fourth toilet and we don't have any.
I'm not real happy with this plumbing claim because it's taking so long for someone to get down here. But I've had two other claims with AHS that were fine. One was they dispatched somebody to look at a water heater a couple of weeks ago and they determined that it was actually an electrical problem. They immediately dispatched an electrician.
Thanks for letting us know everything worked out great for you. Taking care of our members is the main goal here at AHS. I am glad that you were happy with the work done. We look forward to servicing you in the future as needed. Enjoy your day.

American Home Shield sent out a contractor to do my heater because it went out. That was the first part of January, and it's still out. Three people came out, and everybody said different things. The first guy said he fixed my heater and it ran for a night. But it was back off again when we woke up. I called them again and it took them a week to send out the second guy. He came out and said he fixed it, but it still ain’t fixed. When the last person came out, he said he found out what was wrong with it, and he had to order a part. That was on the 5th of January. I called them on Monday and they said the part just came in, but they can’t get nobody out to do the heater until next Monday. So, it’s been a rough one with Total Air Care. But the claims process was good because all I did was call American Home Shield and tell them what was going on. I'm satisfied with them.

Generally good service, but wait times can be a bit long between issue and repair. I have not had too much pushback on repairing broken items, and in some cases, replacements have been made with identical products. I have even accepted (at my option) a cash payment in lieu of a repair to a 10-year-old HVAC unit which helped offset the cost of the replacement. Would recommend overall.

Everything was outstanding with American Home Shield. From beginning to end when I made my initial call, they were very helpful. They asked what was going on with my particular product or what type of repair I needed to have done. They put me in touch with somebody and I got a phone call in less than 10 minutes from the service provider. The service provider was very professional. They were able to get me in the next day. The gentleman that came out was very informative. He went over everything with me.
The gentleman saw one of the motors in my units was out. But the unit was still running but not efficiently. He informed me of that and then he ordered the part. Two days later, service provider had the part. They called me to schedule to come back out. A different repairman came out, but he was just as professional as the first one and he got the job done. The great thing was that the gentleman that initially came out had his notes with the next technician who came out, so he knew exactly what was going on, what to expect, and what to do.

My experience was good when the tech came out for my oven. He wore a mask like he was supposed to. He was polite. He called to let me know he was on his way. He was there the time he was supposed to be. The only thing that I was disappointed about with AHS was when I signed up with them, I was told that if you have a Bosch oven, it would be a certified Bosch repair person that would come out but it wasn't. It was some company that was about 45 minutes away that I had never heard of. They had pretty bad reviews when I looked them up. It would seem to me if they would have people that know the product, it would be a lot less expensive for them, instead of having somebody who doesn't know the product and messes up the appliance even more. Then they have to end up either replacing it or, in the end, calling in somebody who knows what they're doing. Seems like false economy to me.

The first claim I had was when the air conditioning unit was a big frozen chunk of ice. It leaked the Freon out, and there was some other part that was not working. So I put a call in to have an air conditioning repair guy come out and look at it. He came out and it all worked out good. He explained to me that heat pumps work great, until it gets down below 40 degrees, and then they don't work quite as good.
He checked the Freon and all the other parts, and everything was fine. So the issue was weather-related. So the next time it freezes up, I don't worry about it. However, it was strange that American Home Shield picked the repair company that was based an hour and a half away versus picking a repair company that was 15 minutes away. When I looked at my claim, I saw that they were sending somebody from far away. So I clicked on it to say, "Choose other”. I looked it up and saw someone in the same city I'm at. So I clicked on the person I got because it didn't make sense to me to waste somebody's time to drive three hours just to do 30 minutes worth of work.
For my second claim, I needed to rekey the house and American Home Shield called back the next day and had someone scheduled to come out later that same day. The tech came out, pulled all the locks, rekeyed them all to all new keys, and then put them all back. They've all been working great. The tech was very friendly, and he was done before we even knew it.

I had a leak underneath my sink and it was so bad. I realized it because I had a roaster pan underneath in case since the garbage disposal had been leaking. It’s a good thing I did because when I heard the water dripping, the roaster pan was almost full. I couldn't use the sink at all. I did a claim online and the website's good. It’s user-friendly. I then got an email that they would call me, and then the contractor, Mr. Plumber, called and said they would be out between a certain time. I did the claim on the weekend. I put it in Saturday and they came out Monday, which I didn't expect them to come out Sunday. Also, I don't think I would be able to get a contractor out that soon.
The repairman is somebody that I know. He came in and when he pulled the metal pipe out, he tried to work with it. He showed it to me and it was rusted all the way through. It was gushing out. He had to go to Home Depot, get a new pipe and install that. Even though he had to go to Home Depot, he had it done in less than an hour and now everything's fine. He was friendly too. The other time, when someone came for my garbage disposal, they were friendly also.
I bought a house and I didn't know what shape anything was in, so I got the coverage. I'm so glad I did. I've not had any trouble with American Home Shield paying for anything and I have no trouble with the $100 deductible that I have. I've recommended them to different people. At work, when I tell them I've got to do it, they’ve asked me and I tell them to get American Home Shield. American Home Shield saves me from having to call a contractor and on the labor costs. Labor is the thing that costs so much and then sometimes, the $100 might be more than the part would be.

I’m considering canceling my plan and it has a lot to do with the customer service people there and the way the system is run. My house in Georgia has been without hot water since December the 30th. AHS sent someone out there and he followed up to find out what needs to be done so we can get it fixed. I have to get a handyman to fix my stuff and I have to pay out-of-pocket for it. When I called up AHS's customer service, I’m not gonna get reimbursed for that. All the rep was able to do for me was to give me back my $100 service call. I’m not too happy about it. The reason why I’m paying this money and that I'm with AHS is that when stuff gets broken, it can be fixed right away. I thought things like these should be easy. But that's not happening. It’s stressing me out more. It’s easier for me to get a handyman to fix my house and pay him than pay AHS every month.

The freezer side of our refrigerator was frosting up and the ice in the ice maker was thawing out. Ice was freezing in the ice maker. A tech with Peterson came out and he checked everything to figure out why it was frosting up inside the refrigerator. Everything that he checked was working. But he couldn't figure out the problem because he probably had never seen it before, so he had to refer it out to somebody else for a second opinion.
A second person came and as soon as he opened up the refrigerator, he automatically thought, "It's this. This is a problem." He had seen it and he called one of his workers to verify. I was told it was the defrosting heating coil. It was bad. The part was replaced but when he plugged the refrigerator back up, it wouldn't come on. The guy tested it out and said it was the motherboard. He said he was gonna get one but he never came back.
I had to put another claim because the refrigerator stopped working. Peterson came out to check it out and I told their tech that the guy that came out to fix the freezer side said it was possibly the motherboard. The tech checked it and he agreed that was it. He ordered the motherboard then he came out and replaced it. Whatever was wrong with the motherboard affected the freezer side because the ice maker stuff is still not working. The ice is freezing inside the ice maker to the point where you can't use it.
When making the claim, I looked through the AHS website and submitted it there. That was not too difficult. The first time I did it which was when the tech first came out, the freezer side still wasn't fixed so I had to resubmit the claim. We called it within the warranty time frame and I didn't have to pay the $100 deductible. But the second time I tried to go through because the refrigerator wasn't working, I had to pay the $100 deductible again. On the whole, American Home Shield is a good program. But I hope they could reduce the monthly cost.

The pump stopped working and the technician said something was caught up in it. But then, he decided to take the pump with him. When he was here, he told me that maybe my wife left the tap on down there, and that's when everything got kind of haywire because I told him off about it and and stuff got kind of discombobulated.
The contractor claimed they brought the pump back but they didn't. I put in a complaint and I heard nothing back from that yet. It’s causing me a whole lot of headaches because I'm selling my house and that pump is missing, and I can't get it replaced. It's gonna cost me more to get it replaced and to get them to come out to see what type of pump it is. That's two trips. They had no business taking the pump from the beginning. They claimed they dropped it off at my house and left it out by the garage which was stupid.
American Home Shield got me a second opinion, and the plumber came out but he didn't have a pump. I've been waiting for American Home Shield to call me back. Everybody that I’ve talked to was in the Philippines. I've been with American Home Shield a bit, and I can't believe that they're doing this to me. They're not following up and calling me back.

I had somebody come out right before Christmas for the dishwasher. I went to American Home Shield’s website and it was good. I liked it. I knew that the contractor would reach out to me between 24 to 48 hours. Then, they would come out quickly after that. The contractor, Hubert, was phenomenal, most professional, kindest and efficient. The best contractor I've had through American Home Shield. I was so impressed. He fixed the problem and the dishwasher is functioning better. He also made it much quieter. We didn't even know it was loud. So, he improved things that we didn't even know needed to be improved with the dishwasher.
I have two small kids and one of them has special needs. So, we have a lot of bottle mixtures and equipment that we have to run through the dishwasher. I did not realize how much we use it to sanitize things for my son with special needs. So, that repair made my life so much easier just to get it fixed, and getting it fixed quickly was invaluable. We've used American Home Shield for a rental property we had and for our current property. We’ve probably used them for 15 years total. It has been lifesaving not having to stress about those repairs. It’s nice to know that they are there when I have something that happens, and I'm not facing some huge, exorbitant bills that I'm not prepared for. It’s been great.
I am happy that you were happy with your experience. Although we hope there are no issues with anything in the home in the future, we are here to service you anytime you need us. Thanks for continuing your business with us. Take care!

I had some trouble with a built-in wall oven and placed the service call. The tech said that the replacement parts were no longer being made. So, they would do a full replacement. It was easy to work with American Home Shield. Once the tech said that they could not just slap a replacement part in it, they stepped up and said they would just replace the unit pretty quickly.

The basement drain seemed to be clogged. Wilkes Plumbing are the ones that come whenever I put in a claim for plumbing. They snaked the drain and I haven't had any other issues with it since then. I've had a few different warranty companies and I like AHS the best. I'm very satisfied with them.

Good service, but they are quite expensive unless their prices have changed. Their contractors are a good quality and very professional. They however, did not cover a water line break after we'd just moved-in and it cost us $2,000 after we were told it was covered. That kind of financial hit and lie weren't good for my recommendation at all.
Thanks for sharing your experience. We appreciate it.

I’ve been an American Home Shield customer a long time, but I normally call. I have done some website service requests. They're both good. I find the website easier. It's just that when I have an emergency, I like to speak to a live person. The techs were very courteous. They practice social distancing, and that was very nice. I'm glad I have the service. Every time I had a breakdown, I got it repaired. I appreciate the company very much. I have one complaint though. My rate went up some. That could be because of the length of the contract. But I have recommended Home Shield to a few people and they already got the service. I told them it's a good company to have that you know you got, especially if you have a home. You never know. Stuff break down. It's good to have that security to know that you can call and get something fixed if it’s under contract. I sleep good at night knowing that I got that coverage.

The furnace wasn't working and I needed to get somebody out to check the furnace because I wasn't getting any heat in the house. Shortly after calling American Home Shield, I got several emails from them telling me that my appointment was set. The only problem was that Air Plus didn't have a part that they needed, and it took a while to get my heating and air conditioning fixed. But they finally did it and everything was fine.

We pushed a button on our electric dryer and all we could hear was rumbling noises. It went kaput. My husband went online and submitted a request to American Home Shield because waiting on hold on the phone is too much. American Home Shield usually sends the email back saying the service request been assigned to a particular service company along with the phone number. We then have to wait until the service company calls us to schedule a time for the visit. The timeframe has been pretty good lately. It's within 24 hours.
It was disappointing that it took about two weeks for a technician to come out to look at the dryer. That old COVID word pops up all the time where we are told that the service company is short on people. It was disappointing but I understand the circumstances. For those two weeks, we were having to go back and forth to the laundromat. The washing machine was good so we would wash our clothes, put them in baskets after doing a few loads then cart them off to the laundromat and pay to get them dried.
After the technician came, my husband had to call it in to AHS to see what they went through. He had the diagnosis of what was been going on. Apparently after talking to AHS, whoever they called into said they wanted the dryer repaired and not replaced. We thought for sure that because of the age of the dryer and because they were replacing the motor, which is usually the whole brains of the outfit, AHS would replace the unit. According to the technician, that dryer was from the '90s.
And then this gentleman told my husband he was ordering five parts and they would be mailed to our house. When we receive those parts, we were to call Sears and let them know that the parts were all received. In the meantime, the gentleman was going to set up the tentative date for somebody to come back to fix the dryer. That was another two weeks out the door. From beginning to end, it was a month that we had no dryer. We also received an email from Sears saying that one of the parts was on backorder indefinitely. I called them and they said they didn't know when it was gonna come in. I can't live like that so I called AHS then AHS wound up calling Sears and got a different response from them. It was very nerve-racking for a while. The technician came back on the 19th and everything went smoothly. He fixed the dryer.
A month was a long time to be without our dryer. Had AHS replaced our dryer, we would have gotten a new one in half the time. Granted it takes two weeks for the person to come out, but by the time they would have put the order through and granted the new appliance, we would have had the new dryer within the next couple of days. That would have been quicker than another two weeks of waiting for the parts to come in then having to schedule a return time. AHS had done this before. They gave us choices and we opted to have our dishwasher replaced. There was also one time we had to have our kitchen faucet replaced because it wasn’t repairable. AHS did it and there were no problems. That was why this the case of our dryer was a little bit of a shock to us. The difference between what the parts cost and a new dryer was about $150.
If your dishwasher goes out, you can still wash your dishes by hand. But with our dryer, we were inconvenienced. There was the financial implication too. We had to drive numerous times during the week and pay for a dryer for multiple loads. Also, even though the technician fixed the problem, how long is this gonna last? But if AHS got a brand new dryer to replace our old one, they probably wouldn't have another call from us in who knows how long.
The experience was not that great and we were unhappy. This particular time was a very difficult time. In the end, everything got done and I was satisfied but we would have liked to have had it done quicker through a replacement. Other than that experience, AHS has been great. We've been with them for four years and we always had good service and good technicians that came out. We had a washing machine fixed the year before.

I did a claim regarding a stoppage in the main line and used AHS' automated phone option. That was easy to do. The phone system automatically picks up a vendor. We live in a big city, which is the DC Metro. If AHS' vendor is on the other side of the city, they are really reluctant to come and do the service. For my stoppage claim, the job got assigned to a company that is pretty far from where we live. When I talked to them, they didn't want to give me a schedule because I was no longer a priority for them. It was gonna take them two hours to come and two hours to go back to their office. The following morning, I had to talk to a service representative.
If the AHS automated system picks up a vendor based on the ZIP code, it would be better. If there is a vendor located within my ZIP code, it would be a 20-minute drive instead of two hours from another vendor. I'm sure AHS has thousands of vendors in their database so that change can do some good. That issue aside, the tech that came out for my claim did a pretty good repair.

At this point, we've used American Home Shield for about five times. Two of the times, two items weren't covered. The circumstances under which we needed something fixed weren't a covered thing. So, we had to pay the fee, which wasn't fun. It was an innocent mistake in a way. I could have looked a little further. We didn't know what the problem was until they came and looked at it. One of them was a power surge, which was caused by lightning. That was not covered. But other than that, we were fine with it. We just had a plumber come and he was very good. He fixed what we needed fixed. He wore his mask the entire time and he kept his distance. He did offer to take off his shoes entering the house. Other than that, we didn't have to do much in close contact with him.
We've had American Home Shield in the past at different houses. Like they advertise, you don't want a big surprise. In the past, they've covered an ice maker that went bad that would have cost us about $500 out of pocket to fix. They've covered the heat pumps and the air handlers for our heat and air in the house. They would have cost a lot of money. They ended up eventually replacing three heat pumps for us and air handlers. That only cost us the trip charge. Overall, even if we don't use them in one year, somewhere along the line it's going to come back. For the $600 and something it cost us, even if we just used it twice a year, it's worth it for some of the things.
In the past, when you do make the call, you used to have to pay the technician that they sent. Then many times when we dealt with it that way, they were very quick to come out in order to collect their trip charge upfront and diagnose the problem. Then they would have to order parts. Once they already had their trip charge money, they weren't quick to come back. They kept going on and that was a big problem. But they've remedied that because now we pay American Home Shield upfront. Then they distribute it to them once they've completed the job. So, I think that was a major improvement. We recommended AHS to neighbors who have taken it and friends that have subscribed to the service.

I have the same policy in Missouri and in California. But when I had a problem with my household freezer in Missouri, they said it was not covered. But in California, it was covered. The person who they sent to check the freezer never gave them the paperwork on dimension of the freezer. I asked the AHS rep if she could order the report so we know what was wrong. She said, “Well, it’s just not cover. And it's gonna be $2,000. If you want it, we can do it for you. But you have to pay that.” But that was not what I was asking. I wanted a detailed report from the person who did the diagnosis on that. So now, they’re gonna send me another person from a different company to diagnose it again. If I’m paying $100 for a service call, and I’m getting a technician, that technician should write the report and send it to them.
I had a problem with my furnace. When you open the door on the furnace unit, it just keep running. It’s supposed to be when you take the door out, the unit is supposed to quit. But AHS said it was not covered. They said it was not wear and tear. But that is wear and tear. That’s a safety switch. So for the compressor, they cover for $10,000. But safety switch for $20, they don't cover? I'm gonna cancel it. I could have put the switch myself. I can order through Amazon. It's no big deal. But a company like this to nickel and dime you to death when you pay $600, and continually every year, I’m not gonna recommend them to nobody.
Good Morning, are you still in need of assistance?

At first, when the first repairer came, which was Expert Pools, he analyzed the damage and reported it as pest damage. But he appeared to not be aware that American Home Shield wouldn't cover pest damage, which I thought was a bit bizarre. I then requested a second opinion because when I opened up the pool heater, there were signs of nesting in the heater, but there was no other signs of pest damage. Typically, cables get chewed by rat and I couldn't see any of that. So, there was nothing to prove that the heater stopped working, and then the nesting may have occurred after that.
I challenged the fact that it was pest damage. When I spoke to Expert Pools, the gentleman said he didn't do a thorough inspection because as soon as he saw the nesting, he said, “Oh, that must be it. That's the reason why. This should be fine. We should be able to get it replaced for you.” Then I was shocked to hear when American Home Shield said, “Hey, we don't cover pest damage.” I said, “Well, that's completely incongruous of what your number one repairer in the DFW area quoted me." I was kind of skeptical at that point. So, I got a second opinion, and then the second opinion came out, and he reinforced what the first guy said, and I was like, “Okay. Cool. Then that makes a little more sense.” He kind of explained it a bit more that the nesting produces moisture, and then the moisture corrodes the pipes, and that was why this stopped working.
The first inspection was not as detailed as I would have hoped for, and because we had some false expectations set, I was pretty disappointed with the first outcome. As much as I don't wanna pay three grand for a new heater, I have to accept that that's American Home Shield’s policy, and apparently, it was pest damage.
The claim submission was easy. There was a breakdown in communication. When I spoke to them to request the second opinion, the person on the phone stumbled around a little bit and said they had to speak to a supervisor and that they would call me back, and they never did. AHS should be informing their repairers of what is covered and what is not. I’m sure they have so many technicians and it’s probably a revolving door for American Home Shield. But to better inform their technicians so they’re not setting false expectations with clients would probably a big one. It would have been great if they’d called me back when they did. But other than that, it's kind of on me for not reading the fine print in the contract.

We had a plumbing issue and American Home Shield sent somebody. It's a 20-year-old home and the PSI of water was a little more because we don't set the PSI. The builder sets it and it had caused some damage. The contractor looked at it but then American Home Shield pulled back and said that it was a secondary cause of damage so they were not going to cover it. So we are not happy right now.
