My most recent claim to American Home Shield was the oven. The heat wasn't coming on. The techs did have to order parts but they fixed it. The parts were sent to me and I figured, "Well, they know they're here and they'll give me a call." No one called me about it, but I guess I was supposed to call them and let them know that the parts arrived. I said, “Oh, I gotta call and see what's going on with this.” A day turned into a week and a week turned into two, but I guess it’s just a misunderstanding on my part. Overall, I had a very good experience with American Home Shield.

I'm quite happy with the customer service. I like that if I have any problem, I can just call one number and have it taken care of. They have contractors that do a good job and show up pretty quickly. Recently, lightning hit and blew out our refrigerator. Within a day or so, the tech came out. He was very polite and he came back out on time and fixed the fridge.

I put in claims with American Home Shield online and it works 10 times better for me than when I call because it's hard to get somebody. We did a claim for the dryer and North Alabama came. The guy took note of what was going on and he submitted that to AHS. AHS got back to him that he could do the light and the timer. He then called and set up a time to come back. He put the part on and the dryer has been working great ever since. The claim process took a little longer than it should but the guy was very good.

Cool Factory came out for the air conditioner that completely quit working. They diagnosed it as a bad capacitor and based on that, they replaced the capacitor. The next day, it rained. And then the next day, it was clear. I was outside and heard the familiar sound of the compressor running but not the fan. So, I went over and looked at it, and then the fan that cools the compressor was not running. So while I was watching it, the fan kicked on and started running. Cool Factory happened to call me to see if everything was working right and I mentioned to them that strangely enough the compressor was humming but the fan wasn't working. While I was staring at it, it popped on and it made a big jolt sound.
They said, “Okay. When the capacitor went out, it obviously damaged the circuits in the fan, too, so the fan would probably have to be checked.” So, they sent a technician out who checked the fan and said, “Yep, the circuit’s bad and we have to order a new fan.” They came out, replaced the fan, and everything's been great.

We purchased a new home and when the AC had been inspected, it was running fine. Then, all of a sudden, it just would stop running. I made a claim online and the website was perfect. Then, AHS gave us all of the information, who would be coming out, and the phone numbers. Then, I made an appointment with the contractor and the techs came out within the next day. They were timely, friendly, and very quick. They put in a new transformer up in the roof where my AC is and it started running again. It took them a day to get the part, but that was understandable and we had our AC back on a lot faster than we thought.

Leaking water from the ac poured down causing us on 3 occasions to open up ceilings, beams, walls and sink cabinets to repair water damage to the property. Once you read through the end you will see how American Home Shield failed as an insurance company to do the right thing and continued to attempt patch jobs without consideration of damage to the property, loss of rent due to the tenant moving out because of not being able to use the ac, wasting everyone's time and causing us to create a greater carbon footprint with repeated vendors needing access to the unit without resolution. Because this was taking so long we had two other reputable AC Companies out that are not affiliated with AHS. Both said the unit was not repairable. I've included one of the reports below so you have a reference. This was also supplied to Derek ** w/ AHS.
AHS was called in August of 2021 as the ceiling and walls of unit 823 are saturated and destroyed due to water leaking down from the ac into the unit. We were told after the service that the tenant needs to clean the filter vent every 3 months and the tech said he cleaned the condensation line. He said the issue was repaired. We had the damaged bathroom repaired. A month and a half later October 2021 the bathroom is damaged again from water leaking down from the ac unit. Ceiling and walls need to be opened and repaired. We notified Carrie ** the AHS sales rep at the time. AHS Second Vendor came out in October of 2021. The technician said he reworked the condensation line and made an adjustment and the unit is working fine. We resealed the ceiling and walls and repaired all damage in the bathroom.
July 15th, 2022 the tenant notifies us that the ceiling, walls and medicine cabinet and sink are all saturated with water. We are now in touch with Katie ** w/ AHS and we are put in contact with Derek ** w/ AHS. AHS sends out an ac technician who says a part needs to be replaced as it's too old and not this part is no longer available. The unit is approx 23 years old. He recommends replacing the unit. I am given a receipt from the ac company. I speak to them directly and they reiterate what the technician told me in person. I spoke to Derek ** at AHS who claims the ac company told him the coil has areas with bends and this was not normal "wear and tear". "Not normal wear and tear" was not on the ac receipt I received directly from the ac tech and American Home Shields vendors are the only techs who have serviced the unit for over 20 years. Derek denies our claim. See below and the attached vendor receipt and chain of emails.
A second vendor is assigned the job and comes back saying the same thing as the first. The coil and pan needs to be replaced. He said the part is not available anymore. They also said the bent coil is not the issue as every ac has bent coils. Oddly, after waiting on Derek to get the report from the ac company, Derek denies the claim once again. He states the ac company told him there was no P Trap. Again, very odd this was never mentioned by the tech when he was at the property. There in fact is a p trap and I had a picture of it. I sent it over to Derek. After repeated attempts we request that this be escalated to a supervisor with no success. We reached out to Monica ** w/ AHS as she is now involved on all emails. Derek then orders a 3rd vendor to come out. We requested several times for this to be escalated to a manager and we never received any contact info to ensure a supervisor was involved.
The 3rd vendor comes out on 8/12. It's two techs who are supposed to diagnose the unit. They immediately start taking the unit apart. I asked them if they wanted to run the unit and they said no reason to. They sprayed water on the coil with a spray bottle and poured water in the pan. They could not see the leaking. I again asked them if they want to turn the unit on so they can see it running and how the water builds up and leaks. All previous technicians ran the unit. They took brackets off and pulled out the coil and removed the pan.
They started tearing foam on the roof and sticking it under the pan. I asked if they could professionally fix the unit. The tech told me he was angling the pan toward the condensation line and this was a temporary fix for the tenant so he could run the unit in the heat. He said his recommendation is replace the unit. I explained we can't run the unit with foam under the pan like this as we had to repair the bathroom and several other AHS techs did jobs like this and the unit damaged the property. They struggled for an hour trying to figure out how to put the unit back together and they left. We are shocked that Derek would expect us to repair the entire bathroom with a repair job like that. Derek once again denied the claim and said the unit was repaired and in working order which is just not reality. Should we repair the entire bathroom in hopes some foam under a pan is not going to leak again?
The techs never turned on the unit, not once to check it. It was a horrible botch job that we were told was temporary. The quality of technicians don't seem to be quality technicians with the level of expertise that would be expected. 3 denials from Derek with 3 different reasons, all different than what was explained to us by the technicians on the roof at the property. The tenant moved out and now there is loss of rent. The ac has not worked now for over two months.
Cameron,

I called American Home Shield on June 20th to get my A/C fixed cause it was making a loud noise. AHS sent a contractor out from Fire and Ice Heating and Air to fix the problem. When the Technician was done checking the unit he said the fan motor wasn’t working and the unit needed a new one. This was on July 6th. I called AHS on July 20th to see has the part been ordered and was told the retention center hasn’t received the notes from the contractor and to call back the following week so I waited and called back the next week just to hear the same answer from customer service. Then I receive an email from Fire and Ice to purchase a new 5 ton A/C unit which is $11k.
The same week I finally got a call back from AHS around the beginning of August to tell me the blower unit won’t be cover and will cost me $750 because the technician told them in the notes it’s a pre-existing condition and when I told them that’s not what the technician told me and I asked them to send me a copy of the notes AHS told me they couldn’t give me that info. So I preceded to call Fire and Ice and was told the technician notes can’t be shared with me also. So then I proceed to ask for a second opinion and the new contractors never showed up or called me back to set the appointment. So on August 15th called to cancel my service with AHS and was transferred 6 times before I finally got someone who would cancel my service contract with AHS and was told upon canceling I would have to pay $56 for an administration fee. I would rather pay out of pocket before I ever use American Home Shield again. Almost three months and no resolve.

I hate submitting claims online with AHS. It doesn't give me enough choices. If I put it in wrong, the person will come in and say, "That wasn't marked on the thing." But you only have checkboxes to mark, so you can't describe what's going on. There were also other issues that I'm not that happy with. But with my garage door claim, it was a great experience.

The last few times I used American Home Shield, they sent people to my home who were from good companies. They were there for my washing machine and my garbage disposal. They replaced the garbage disposal and they had to replace a pump in the washing machine. They fixed the garbage disposal the same day. For the washer, they had to order the parts and they came back the next week. When you have a home warranty, you don't have to pay for costly repairs. When something is broken that's costly, it's beneficial to have it. I'd rather pay the $75 than pay $500, $600 or thousands of dollars to have something repaired or just have to go and get a new one.

We have an issue with our dryer and we've had four different contractors come. The last contractor was really slow about the things they were doing. They haven't been responsive nor honest. I have an old-school mentality so customers should come first. But AHS sets their contracts with their vendors and the vendors have priority over their clients.
I like AHS's service but it seems to have changed since COVID. They were a lot better. When a customer who is paying for the service calls in and says that they’re not being serviced properly or that the contractor is being dishonest, that needs to be a priority. AHS shouldn't be telling us that they need to go back and verify what we're telling them with the contractor. When there's conflicting information, AHS should err on the side of the client, not the contractors.

I had American Home Shield in the past and it was great. If there was an issue, I’d call in and they'd send somebody out and fix whatever the issue was. Then I moved up here to Birmingham and got AHS. The fan on the outside heat exchange wasn’t blowing so they sent somebody out from Myers Comfort Specialist of Birmingham. The guy looked at the system and diagnosed the problem. The capacitor burnt out and he replaced it. It cooled the temperature and it worked great for about a week. But then it got down to 76 or 75 and it didn't seem to get below 75.
AHS has a thing where I can call back in 30 days and they'd send somebody back out. I called and said the unit is not cooling. They sent a second guy out and the guy said that the valve stem was leaking on the outside heat exchange. But the other guy had previously checked the system and he said everything was fine. He said you put some Freon in it and run it with no filter in the filter return, which I thought was weird because you always need to filter on an AC unit. He said he's gonna put two pounds and it's gonna cost $210. I said that usually, AHS covers that but he said they don't cover anything. He said I have to pay the full amount and he went ahead and did what he did to the system. He also offered to do a further inspection for $1,200 and said they have a system they can install that weekend for $4,000.
That night, it didn't work. There was no air conditioning and it was just blowing hot air. I called AHS back and they said they would get somebody out. It was the weekend so it took a couple of days. The same guy came back out five days later and looked at the system. He said I have a leak in the evaporating coil in the attic and I need to change out the thermostat. He put in a new thermostat and said the evaporating coil was gonna have to be replaced. He said he has to submit a thing to AHS. Then AHS calls and said I'm not covered because this is a preexisting condition.
I called Myers back and they said AHS doesn't cover anything for the first 90 days. There’s nowhere in my contract that says I have to have the warranty for 90 days before I can use anything. But they said I'm gonna have to pay out of pocket. They can't submit the claim as though it wasn't preexisting because they would lose that business and a lot of their business comes from AHS. I told them I heard from AHS that they told them that this was preexisting and that the radiator was leaking. They said they didn't say that. Why would the contractor even know when my contract with American Home Shield is? They are an unbiased person coming out. But Myers knew that.
I talked to the office manager at Myers who said they only submit that the cooling thing was broken after their guy came out the second time. But AHS gives them a call and asks if it could have been broken earlier and they say yes. But they have a policy from their interactions with AHS that anything within 90 days is not gonna be covered and if they try to get it covered, they're gonna lose that business so they just go along with AHS. If AHS is gonna offer insurance and coverage and they're not gonna cover for 90 days, then they need to be upfront about that.

American Home Shield covers all the way from ceiling fans to dishwashers and air conditioner units. I had an incident about the air conditioner a while back. AHS was running a promotional. When they assigned me a provider, the provider said that they weren't doing the tune-ups anymore. And that's what I had paid the $75 for, which I got back. But I still got the message that they were doing a promotional. I was disappointed when that happened. But I subsequently called and inquired about the air conditioner before and they came through with the service provider. But it was just a regular fix. The tech had to put some more refrigerant back into it.
The tune-ups maybe should have been paid for if I paid into it for over a year. But that's just one hiccup that I have about that. And I know it's a business and they need to collect fees and things cost money on AHS's side. But I would be very grateful for things like that, especially during the COVID time when people were struggling.

I just had the news that my refrigerator cannot be fixed. I don't wanna lose my fridge but it's not working. American Home Shield had people come after I paid my $100 and they did their best to try to fix the refrigerator. But the part is not available anymore. This fridge is probably over 10 years old. I was offered $1,300 or $1,500 for my fridge. The samples that American Home Shield gave to pick from are fridges for an apartment and it was a white fridge. My whole kitchen is stainless steel, black, and gray. American Home Shield should have asked me to send them a picture of what my kitchen looks like. They can't put in one of those little cheap fridges. This is a beautiful kitchen. I have a beautiful stainless-steel fridge and this model is not made anymore. In their wording, they said the price they came up with is equivalent to what they feel my fridge is worth and their samples are equivalent.
I thought that American Home Shield's maximum was 2,500. These fridges that I have are over the $2,000 price. It’d be around 3,000 for me to replace it to make it look like the rest of my kitchen. I read that I have to purchase a fridge right away or they don't give me the money. There's no real time to think. Supposedly, there’s a 21-day thing. I have to make that decision haphazardly and this refrigerator is a major investment. I also read a little clause that says I won't get a check until I buy a fridge, which puts me at the defensive. I have to be able to come up with cash to cover a fridge equivalent to it. American Home Shield is not really helping me and I’m just gonna have to take the loss.
Up until this moment, I was feeling really great about American Home Shield. It's like having insurance. You hope you never have to use your medical insurance but when you need it, it should be there. That's a great concept. Right now, I'm so stressed out about it because I just received the notice that that's what's gonna happen. I don't have a number I can call and it seems like everything is on the internet. Another thing is one of the techs made a mistake and I ended up getting charged another 100. American Home Shield took that off for me because it was still the original work order. That aside, I like my service with American Home Shield.

Seattle Home Appliance was wonderful. They came for the refrigerator and they fixed it. It was for a leak out of my fridge. The tech went above and beyond and was courteous and fast. Everything was terrific. I have not had the issue since. I called American Home Shield for a second item, which was a bathroom fan. It wasn't exhausting the way it should have been, and they sent me an electrician who said the fan was mechanically sound, but the venting might be an issue and they don't do venting. Based on that, I was out 100 bucks and no further along than I was when I made the appointment. I kind of wish that I had gotten more information that the insurance policy only covers mechanical and that they don't look at the vents or the ductwork. If I had known that, I would not have spent the $100 to have somebody get up on a ladder and tell me my fan was working.

Our claim to American Home Shield on the AC unit took a couple of times to get completed. The people who came were the ones that have done quite a bit of the different things that we've had to have done, but they were the ones who were sent originally on the AC unit. The tech knew what he was doing, but I feel like he didn't look at everything. He was just looking for what may be the cause of the problem. So, we had to do a recall. They sent a higher technician who looked a little deeper, and we found the main problem in the unit. After that, the unit didn’t seem like it kept up, but we were also facing 100 plus degree weather.
The tech checked the Freon and everything and said, “Well, as far as we can tell, it looks like it has good pressure and everything.” We left on vacation the week before school started for the kids and when we came back, we noticed that the main unit on our main floor now is not cooling. I've had to call them in on that, and they're supposed to come out tomorrow morning.
I've continued to purchase American Home Shield. Ever since I've had them, anytime I've had an issue, they've sent somebody out, and I’ve paid my deductible, and it's been resolved. They've never once denied me or given me a hard time. So, I’ve recommended to other people, “Hey, it's well worth the investment, especially when you don't want to surprise.” The only thing is I had a replacement item and it was very difficult to get to the department that would handle that to ask any questions. Other than that, I've gotten my money's worth and my use out of being protected by the program that's why I continue to purchase it every single year.

When I called American Home Shield the very first time for the AC, some guys came out and had to replace the compressor. They had not tightened the screws enough. So, it was leaking the Freon out. When the dude who just came a few weeks ago came, he noticed that they had not tightened it up and the caps were missing. He said that was the reason it was causing the air unit to freeze up because it was leaking out and it didn't have enough Freon in it. He just put new caps on there and tightened up the little plugs that he showed me that were loose, and then put more Freon in it and that was it. He was gone in 20 minutes. It didn't take them long at all.
I always call AHS when I do my claims. I don't do it online because I feel like if I talk to someone, we can get it done a lot faster and easier. Everyone I called and talked to from the company was very helpful and got me to the right people I need to speak to and everything and they'd let me know. They'll call me within 24 hours. They're very professional, very kind, and they really know what they're talking about and definitely get the job done as soon as I bring it to their attention and I really appreciate that.
American Home Shield knows what they're talking about. They get the right people for the job that needs to be taken care of in a timely manner and I would definitely 100% recommend them. It's been a great experience. Everyone's respectful on the phone. They want to make sure they can help you right away, especially if it's an AC problem in Florida.

American Home Shield's doing just fine. The first time in about four years that I've been with American Home Shield that I had to use them, it seems like every electrical outlet I had around here wanted to go kind of weird. So, I put in my request on the computer, and they gave me an assignment number and told me who was gonna be doing it, and that those persons should contact me within two or three days. They did, in fact, contact me within two or three days. That was Lowe Brothers Electric.
Now, when they did contact me, they asked me for further details of what was wrong, and I said, "Well, look, I got three or four outlets in different locations in my house." It's actually 5,200 square feet. We're trying to make it 6,000 that way we get the basement finished here. The tech came out with all kinds of switches and all kinds of outlets, and it took him about three and a half hours. We have junction boxes in the basement and in the attic. The poor guy was all over the place but he did a great job. Everything that was not working is now working perfectly. I could not be happier.

We opened a service order a couple of weeks ago on our washing machine. They sent someone who thought he had repaired it. He gave us his direct number to get back to him if there were any issues. We did and he instructed us to contact American Home Shield to reopen the service request. But it's difficult to connect with AHS to do that process because it's not any of the automated options that they offer online or on the phone. It took them a few days to restart the claim.
Then, the original contractor transferred it to another one and that other contractor came. He made an adjustment to the work that the first contractor had done and said that he was not gonna close the service order on his end. He also gave us his direct line and said, "Call me if this doesn't resolve the issue." And so, we've been waiting to see if the issue was resolved. But, I got an automated notification from American Home Shield yesterday that they closed the service order when they shouldn't have.
Communicating with them can be challenging whether it's via the website or by phone. I also noticed that half the time, we get people who sound like they are working in the US, and the other half of the time, it sounds like we're dealing with people outside of the US. So I don't know if they have call centers outside of the US, or if they just do employ people for whom English is not their first language. That can make communication difficult.

My hot water heater went out and it was escalated. I went for two and a half weeks without hot water and had to boil water to even draw a bath for a house full of five people, kids included, and still did not have anyone sent to our house. American Home Shield's system is flawed. To my understanding, they give out a certain number of jobs to contractors and then they put a hold on them after a certain number of jobs have been given to them. Those contractors can agree to take on another job beyond that hold amount. When my air conditioning went out, I had it escalated because we were in the hundreds when it went out. It was extremely hot.
I contacted the local HVAC guy that participates with them and he was like, "Yeah. I can take you on. I can get out there today. But I have to have them release the hold." When you talk to customer service, the only way they have to communicate is emailing, which is not a very efficient way of doing things if you've got a situation that's escalated. So, he was having a hard time getting ahold of his point of contact to release the hold. He managed to get it done the next day. The only reason I was able to do it was because I was in contact with the contractor myself. If I had just relied on Home Shield to send someone out, it wouldn't have happened that fast.
The second time, the contractor got ahold of his guy the same day and was able to come out the same day and get it fixed. The other one, it was a few days where we were really hot. With the plumber, I didn't know who they participated with for me to even call. I know no one in this town participates with them. They said they've had bad experiences with them. All I got was a list of who not to call. Ultimately, they ended up saying, "You find somebody and you get them to come out and we'll reimburse you." I didn't even get to do that. I just bought a water heater and had someone who I know who has installed lots of water heaters with his boss' company install it. So, everything was out of my pocket and that was after two and a half weeks of waiting and then saying, "Oh, we're trying to get someone out there. We're trying to get someone out there."
Then, I have a bunch of appliances that have been approved to replace, but all the appliances that they have offered as replacements are out of stock. All of them but one don't fit. So, I'm going to have to try to take those measurements myself, buy them, take the payout, but then I'll come out of pocket for installation.
I've been with Home Shield for over 10 years and I never had these problems before. When they escalated the water heater, they didn't actually escalate it the first day I called. I called back the next day and the rep said, "No. It wasn't escalated, but I'll escalate." I sat there after I hung up with her and started kind of getting really upset. So, I called back and spoke with someone in the escalation department. They said neither of the two people that I'd spoken to that said that they would make it the top priority work orders had done it. Unfortunately, it didn't really matter because nobody could get anyone out here. I still have to replace all these appliances and try to find them on my own. Then I'll have to pay someone to install them.
If you don't use the ones that AHS suggests then you're going to pay more. You don't get as good of a deal and your payout doesn't cover as much. So, I'm not really happy. Once I get everything fixed, I'm gonna have to reevaluate. Some of the customer service people are not responsible and they can't help with how Home Shield has it set up and how the process works. It's not their fault but Home Shield overall needs to figure out a better way to do it especially in these times.

I had some good experiences with American Home Shield, but I also had some negative ones. Just recently, it wasn't a good experience at all. The family and I were without an icemaker for almost three months. They sent the person out here and then the people that they say can do the job can't do the job. They said they’d order parts. We never heard from them again. Then when we called them back, they said they were not going to service the refrigerator anymore. We asked them why, and they said, “Well, because we don't want to.” I called AHS back, and they sent somebody else out. Then that person ordered one part, told me the other part was coming in, and the part never came in. When I called them back, they were not answering the phone. I called AHS and they said, “Okay. We'll get somebody else.” After all that time, I had to end up contacting Sears. Sears was able to come in a matter of minutes.
The same thing happened with my dishwasher. They sent somebody out. The guy came out and he didn't know what he was here to fix. Once he got here, he saw some other things that he was like, “Oh, yeah. This is your problem. But they don't make this dishwasher anymore. And because of that, the door in the dishwasher can't be fixed.” I still haven't had anybody reach out and send me a check. I know Home Shield’s supposed to replace the product if they can't fix it. I still haven't heard anything back from anybody and the dishwasher’s still broken.
My AC unit claim was a good experience. The techs came right out and fixed it. I had another AC that needed to be serviced, cleaned, and then the pan emptied up in the top of the house. Somebody came out and did a service on it. Everything's good. Compared to Old Republic, American Home Shield is the best warranty company on the planet.

The contractor showed up on time as promised and did a great job. The tenant was very happy. American Home Shield didn't tell me anything other than the repair was completed. The washing machine was not turning. The issue was that the techs had to order parts. We had to wait a week for the parts to come in to get the repairs completed. The repair company, which is Sears, doesn't have a very good system to call and talk to anyone. I was waiting and no one came in. I got two text messages asking to reschedule. There was a third part. They tracked that the parts were delivered before they sent a technician. And the part was delivered late on the day that they were supposed to be here. But I was not expecting a third part.
So, it took another almost two weeks to get the washing machine repaired. But, the repairs were fine. They did everything. When they got here, they got everything done. The guys were very nice. It just took him a while longer than it should have and it was also not American Home Shield, it was more of the Sears repair. AHS is very convenient. Every time I call American Home Shield, they’re very responsive. The room for improvement is maybe with their contractors being more accessible. American Home Shield is great until you have to actually use it. The last time I used it, they sent out about three different companies to look at my AC unit and none of them could repair it, and AHS was not willing to allow me to find my own vendor to repair it. So, it went unrepaired. Eventually, we had to just find our own people to repair it. I also had to use AHS for the microwave, and while it got repaired, it wasn't exactly a speedy process. AHS needs to figure out what kind of appliances people have in their homes so they can send the right vendors out. Also, they need to work it out somehow so that the person can find their own vendor and still be able to use their American Home Shield contract.

Our most recent claim with American Home Shield was to get a replacement dishwasher. On the 22nd of July, we ordered the recommended replacement dishwasher. It was brought to the house. The company that brought it to the house said, "Oh, it's not going to fit. You need to get one that's deeper." So, I said, "Okay. Well, we're not going to accept it." We sent that back, and then we got charged a $159 restocking fee, which was understandable at the time. We did the research and got in touch with the builder of our house and the builder of the house said, "Nope, the 24-inch depth is the correct one. They don't make them any bigger unless you get a commercial dishwasher. And then, the height and width are too big."
We went back in and reordered the exact same recommended dishwasher. They brought it to the house just two days ago, and the company that delivered it said, "Oh, the hose that connects the dishwasher to the sink part isn't long enough. It's only six feet. It needs to be longer. We'll let you know when we get the new hose." So far, a month later, we still don't have our dishwasher.
I also received a phone call from one of the supervisors regarding the $159, saying that he would talk to us. Once we get the machine in, if it fits, then we can address the issue of possible reimbursement of the $159 restocking fee, given that we ended up getting the same machine. So, we're waiting for the product to be installed. Overall, every time we call AHS, we get answers to our questions. So, we've been pleased. Updated on 07/25/2023: I waited to write a follow up for my original review, this week is 1 year since I submitted a service request, and so far no air conditioner. I told American Home Shield, in December, 2022, I would like all of my monthly payments returned due to the fact that American Home Shield is not honoring their warranty of my air conditioner. They refused and offered me $850 towards replacement costs.
The story: I spent $125 on repair call, and they sent a company that does not know how to repair air conditioners, and tried to commit fraud. The company they sent strung me along, for three appointments, charged me $850 for Freon, without ever diagnosing what was wrong with my air conditioning unit. When I complained to the "owner" of the heating and cooling company, they assured me they were sending their "Senior Technician" and that repair diagnosis would be obtained by sending this person. The technician did not visually inspect the air conditioner, he refused to get up on the roof to do so. The technician did not even bring any equipment. He stated, "he was tired of this and was recommending replacement."
I then complained to American Home Shield, they sent another contractor who immediately shared the unit could not be replaced. American Home Shield went back and forth with what they would pay. First is was $2500, then it was $1500, and when I told them I would not have any contractor of theirs work on replacing my air conditioner, they offered $850. To make matters more laughable, they increased my monthly payment, that I am still paying until I get my money returned to me for this fraudulent practice of not honoring their home warranty. My best advice: DO NOT BUY A HOME WARRANTY FROM AMERICAN HOME SHIELD.
Updated on 03/13/2023: Here I am 8 months after my submission to American Home Shield, with no resolution to my air conditioning system. They sent out a new technician who then submitted a bid to replace my air conditioning unit for over $6,800. I had been assigned to a Social Media person, Stacy **. They continue to charge me a monthly fee. I honestly was dealing with a family situation and the holidays, and with it not being summer, I had no sense of urgency to resolve, but now that it is a new year, my goal is to get resolution and that is to receive every payment I have made to the fraudulent company, plus the money I am out due to their subpar, untrained contractor they sent to my house. It is interesting how her first offer to get rid of me was $2,500 and suddenly dropped to $850.00. To anyone considering this company, beware of FRAUD, their company is all over the news with people in my same situation.
Original Review: My experience has been awful, the contractor American Home Shield sent doesn't appear to know how to troubleshoot any part of the air conditioning system. After four visits, the contractor sent their "Senior Technician" who, believe it or not, didn't even bring tools and didn't even complete a visual inspection of my air conditioning unit. He said, "I'm tired of dealing with this so I am recommending replacement." The contractor submitted a recommendation to American Home Shield for replacement, with $2,000 in charges for me, including a condensing unit, cooling coil replacement in the furnace. I can attest, the furnace absolutely has not even been checked by the contractor American Home Shield recommended.
In addition, the $2,000 worth of charges sent by their assigned contractor are completely different from the estimate I received from American Home Shield. To date, I am out $850 for Freon, due to the contractor telling me that is that was needed in my air conditioning unit. Subsequently, due to the assigned contractor not diagnosing the situation properly, the Freon has all leaked out. This definitely feels like a bait and switch or fraud on the part of the contractor and American Home Shield.
I apologize for the inconvenience we've caused. My name is Stacy and I will contact you about your ongoing concerns.

They were very efficient. I also did a claim for our spa and American Home Shield said it wasn't covered, then it was covered, and then it wasn't covered. It took us since April 23rd and someone's coming out today to fix it for the fifth time. In the contract, ours is above spa. They said it was covered below spa. They said no one specified that to me. But they were gracious. After a couple of months, they waived the $200. After we got it all settled, they were very nice.

My AC went out on a Friday evening and they couldn't find a repair company. American Home Shield couldn't send someone out until Monday and the temperature was close to 100. I need to check that because I don't know if they refunded me my $100 back. I had another claim for the pellet stove but they refused to do service on that because it says stove on it. It had gas but it didn't say what type of stove or fireplace. Still, I'm satisfied with AHS.

I had a couple of claims with American Home Shield and the most recent one was for the ice maker. The ice maker tray was broken and had a hole in the bottom of it. The claim was sent to Whirlpool instead of one of the local people. The techs were great and they let me know what needed to happen, how it was gonna happen, and when it was going to happen. They followed through like they were supposed to and were much better than the local people American Home Shield used. The techs had to replace the ice maker tray as there was no workaround for it.
I'm paying a lot of money per month to American Home Shield and I'm thinking about changing because there are cheaper options out here. I recently had a situation where my air conditioner was supposed to get the tune-up service but nobody showed up. I tried to speak to someone and I was told that I got a refund but I can't prove that I got a refund. Another thing is the Advanced Appliances contractor that American Home Shield uses in my area is not good.

I have not been very happy with American Home Shield. It seems like we never can get anything done in one call. It always has to be more than one and they want me to pay more money. It took three different trips to get the air conditioner fixed. The first time, it was low on Freon and I had to pay for it. A little bit later, it was still not cooling. It was within the 30 days and I called. They sent somebody else back out here and the tech said I need to contact the people that installed this. I called the people that installed it. I disputed the actual charge with American Express but they ruled in American Home Shield’s favor.
I called in a claim because there was a problem with the faucets in both bathrooms and the tubs were draining very slow. The faucets were real loose and all they had was hot water. AHS set up Universal Plumbing. I paid my $100 deductible and Marty came out. He was a great guy and he fixed the drain problems. But I got a surprise when I was told that they would have to go on top of the roof to clean out one of the drains and that that was an additional $125 fee that I didn't see when I looked over my policy. Then, they said they would come back and redo it.
Also, he didn't do the faucets. Someone else would come back and do them but I didn't hear anything. I called back and they told me that my faucets aren't covered. But I'm looking at the American Home Shield Plus policy and it says “faucets”. I was told the day I made the claim or requested the service that they were covered. I waited again and I called back. I asked for a supervisor that time and someone that could really speak English. I got somebody on the phone and I was told it's covered but they would have to reschedule it. I had to pay another fee to get it rescheduled. This has happened numerous times and it's bull crap.
Then, a different plumber came out and he got it to where the faucets could get some cold water but he told me that something was installed wrong and would have to be repaired. I called and I made sure it was going to be covered when the tech comes out. They said it would be covered so I called yesterday to see when the people were coming back out. He said they're gonna have to cut a hole and that I'm gonna have to talk to American Home Shield to see if they're going to cover that. I'm waiting on a confirmation on that appointment. I dislike the fact that it takes numerous calls to get a job completed and that their scheduling department has no clue as to what the policies cover. They're not trained and they're not trying to know what is covered and what is not. They don’t realize there's more than one type of policy.

We like American Home Shield. They've been easy. I'm dissatisfied with who we have to use for appliance repair because every time they come out, it's somebody new. They're on the phone asking for help the whole time. I'm not pleased. I'm gonna get our friend that's an appliance repair guy. We did have a plumber and the experience was great. I loved it.
True Vine worked on my dryer and that was fine. They came back a week ago because the dishwasher was not getting warm. They said it was our plumbing and that we needed to get an instant hot water thing put under the sink for it. My brother-in-law is a plumber and he said, “That's a bunch of hokey-pokey. If that's the case, anybody who has a dishwasher would have to get it." At first, they did get on my dryer but they always got issues when you call. It’s always the office staff up there or the last technician that came out. He said he had to order a part for it. Then when he came back and put it on, it wasn’t the one they installed. He was like, "It could take a while because there's a bunch of stuff going on with the office and I don't know." I was like, "I don't need to hear all that."

Having American Home Shield is very convenient. You save money and time, and they help you through the whole process. When the pump of the pool stopped working, the process was very easy. They already had the option there for the pool system and all I had to do was select it. I had to first read through the contract to make sure that it was covered. Then a gentleman called me to set up an appointment for when he was coming. He also asked me what was going on and I told him. He came out and replaced it the same day. He had the part. I didn't have to wait for them to order it. He came prepared with it. Every time we have issues with the pool and we put the claim with American Home Shield, he's the one that comes out, which is something that I like. It's consistent. They already know the system of the pool since they've been here.

I've had American Home Shield for a long time. The only problem I have with them right now is with these air conditioners. I had a guy out here to my residence and he looked at my units. He's fixing them and that's fine. But my air conditioning units are 27 years old and they need to be replaced. When technicians come out every summer, the units are empty with Freon and they put Freon in them. Right now, the Freon is $145 a pound and that's ridiculous. American Home Shield covers $10 and that's a joke. Every year I'm having to put it up.
Yesterday, a tech came out. The guy that did the air conditioning unit was very good and he took his extra time. I've had some guys that come out, and they weren't as sterile as the guy that was out here yesterday. That's why I'm really particular about who comes out here. I have two air conditioning units and I didn't even feel one of them. I paid $1,000 to set up one of the air conditioning units. Eventually, I talked to a man's supervisor about that. In a couple of years, I already paid for two air conditioning units. I just won't fill up both of them.
This time next summer, they will be empty again because there's a leak. The technician might have fixed the leak in one but didn't in the other one. They are nickel-and-diming and saying, "Three months or a month on the job, then we'll come back and fill it back up." But by that time, it's time for me to turn my heaters on, so I don't need the air. I'm a little bit disappointed with the air conditioning situation.
Every year I pay $1,000. Moving forward in five years, I'll buy a unit. But I've already bought one air conditioning unit. It's just like trying to put new tires on a car that's on its way to the junkyard. You keep putting money in it, putting new tires, and new engine parts, and you're throwing your money away. There's a leak there and nobody wants to find the leak. The guy replaced a couple of parts yesterday. He showed me where the last guy that was out here had put some glue in a part. He was not as experienced as the guy that came out yesterday.
One guy told me that the last time that he was out here was, "I can't get this pin out of here." I found out with the guy that came out here a couple of days ago that there's a special tool that you need to take that pin out. The guy didn't have the tool so he put glue down in there to stop the leak. There's another piece of equipment that could detect a gas leak. You can hear it, "beep, beep, beep," like that when it's leaking Freon. There was a little bit of Freon still in there and it was leaking, but not enough to make the house cool. You can hear it. The guy ordered a part and did a good job.
The problem that I'm hearing is Freon is hard to get for the unit. So why not replace the air conditioning units and I don't have to call back for 15 years? I don't have to put Freon in my air conditioning units every summer, which is what's happening every summer. Eventually, you wanna talk with the supervisor about that.
I filled up one of the units and it was one downstairs. It cost me 1,200 bucks. If I were to fill them both up, it would have cost me $2,000 yesterday. So what did American Home Shield do for me? They didn't do anything. I could've paid half for the service call for the guy that come out and did what he did. But I would have paid $2,000 warranty to put their friend in those air conditioning units. That's just money wasted. My biggest expenses are the air condition units and I've been in this house for 27 years now. Those units are shot.
Other than that, I don't have a problem with American Home Shield. I've been with them for a number of years. On the commodes and the plumbing, the response time was very good. The technician that came out answered our questions and he did a very thorough job. It was very complete. I did a plumbing work order with them for a clogged drain. A guy came out and unclogged the drain. There were a couple of problems with the toilets and he took care of that. He was very professional and did a very good job. Everything is working very good, so far.

The AC was leaking water into the vents that blow air. I called Home Shield on Saturday. The problem is they don't offer 24-hour service. Instead of saying no one's coming out until Monday, they kept telling me, “Call every four hours if someone doesn't show up or call you.” I was very disappointed the first time I called them because I was calling every four hours and they kept saying that they would put a ticket in instead of telling me the truth that they were not going to help me. I was insanely upset.
The first person that came, Sam, looked around and was here for 15 minutes. He said, “Nothing's wrong. Your dog peed in the vent. And everything's working just fine.” My dog did not pee in the vent because I cleaned up the vent. Sam was horrendous and just didn't want to do the job. The second guy that came out was fantastic and he spent two hours in my home. He fixed the problem. He was the best technician I could ever have in the whole world. The lights in our home kept going in and out because of the breaker. The tech said it was the breaker. So he flipped the switch and it came on. However, he said the wiring had an issue to do with it because when you hit the switch on the wall, you have to hold it for it to stay on. Then the back patio porch light was broken. So he helped me get the bulb out and put a new bulb in. He said, “Oh, I fixed it.” But I told him, “No, you didn’t. I just gave you a new bulb, my new bulb. You didn’t do anything.” However, we just left it alone. But my biggest issue is the wiring that’s connected to the house on the outside that American Home Shield said was not covered.
The tech said, “I will submit the claim for you, and we’ll get back to you.” But they never got back to me. I called them and they said Home Shield denied the claim. But when I reached out to Home Shield initially, they said they didn’t have any record of that. So that was how we started this long paper trail. Then all of a sudden, Home Shield has the paper trail and said, “Oh, it’s not covered because it’s on the outside of the home.” I don’t get it. So in order for me to get the wiring fixed, I got to pay $845. I talked to the American Home Shield on Monday and scheduled the appointment. The tech capped the wire and left it laying on the ground on the side of my house. So I don’t allow my kids to go back there. Also, the back patio light doesn't work anymore because of whatever they did.

The third issue I contacted AHS for is for a leak in the roof and the company that came out didn't fix it 100%, there was still some leakage. The contractor came out for AC repair. We scheduled right away. And it was up to my availability. So, they came out within the week. They refilled the Freon. There was a small leak, so they used the leak sealant that mixes them with the Freon to try to plug up that leak. And they explained the process. They explained how much it will cost if there's a bigger issue. I had to pay a ridiculous amount for the Freon. But that's cheaper than replacing the whole unit.
American Home Shield is a peace of mind to have. I just have it in case something goes wrong, most of it will be covered. But a lot of times, I was not very happy. They use the most ridiculous vendors that do horrible jobs. Because I've had bad experiences before, which were a big waste of my money. Their warranty for after they finish the job is only 30 days. And right after 32nd day, it would go bad and the contractor couldn't get back to me and let me know what they did to fix it and what was wrong with it. They have horrible communication with the vendor. And I would never get an answer back. They would bounce back on each other. “Call the AHS,” or, “Call the vendor directly.” So, I would give up. If another home warranty service was cheaper, I'll probably go with them.

Chad, the tech, didn’t get the notification but we had the number so we called him. He set us into his schedule, and got out and changed the part and fixed the AC unit. It was painless. It’s not always like that with American Home Shield. But that time, it was great. I don't like to have to find contractors and it's probably a wash in terms of financially. But AHS finds contractors and I have rental properties so I can't always supervise. Once they find the contractors, they report to American Home Shield. I haven't had perfect experiences but I've had them for so long that I know the system. If they can't find a contractor, I know to go straight to getting a permission to get somebody outside of the contract. And I don't wait around for them to call me. I'm proactive about it so it works out well for us.
I've had some contractors that weren't good but that's not AHS' fault. So sometimes once I find that contractor, I might use them for work that's not covered. I've referred Greg and Cory who works with American Home Shield to my dad and my sister. And typically, if I get a good contractor out, I'll request them. I have a number of homes in Bend, Oregon so I request TNT Services over and over again because they've always been good. AHS fits our situation but I wouldn't recommend that for everybody. We don't have AHS on the home we live in because my husband is handy. But for rentals and for people like my sister who can't work on her home, I highly recommend. We had to wait for another part and the tech came back one more time a few weeks later when the part was available. In the end, he was able to take care of all the issues. With American Home Shield, it's nice to know you have coverage for things that might be too expensive.

The washing machine was leaking water. Like we always do, we put in a claim to American Home Shield that we had a problem with the washing machine. They sent somebody out. He looked at it, inspected it, and said it's not going to be able to be fixed. We've never been in a problem with AHS. One thing they did let me do was they sent me the money for the hot water heater and I saved $150. They didn't hesitate a minute. I got a cheaper price than their guy is doing, and I got their money and I saved the $150.

Service Mechanical of Tidewater came to my house and checked my AC. Previously, different technicians came here to my house to diagnose this one five times. But Service Mechanical of Tidewater did great. They checked the gas level and added the gas level without any charges. Their diagnosis was correct and acceptable but American Home Shield said they did not cover it. American Home Shield’s decision is wrong. I’m not accepting this one. It's ok for them not to change my AC unit, but they have to repair my compressor that's making noise. At this point also, Service Mechanical of Tidewater should point up this one to American Home Shield but they didn’t do it. I'm 95% happy with Service Mechanical of Tidewater. I'm not happy with the American Home Shield.

I don't like that all the calls go overseas and the reps don't speak clear English. The second problem was when my air conditioning unit went out. I got off of work, came home and called American Home Shield. The automated system was able to generate an order number for me. They said that somebody would call me within the next business day. They sent me who they outsourced it to and the telephone number.
Once 9:00 came, I saw nobody called me and I wound up calling them. The lady answered and said, "No one's in yet, but somebody will call you." I said, "Okay, no problem." So I waited and 1:30 came, but nobody still called. I called back and they said, "They left. They went home for the day. So, somebody will call you on Monday." I told them, "That means I have to go the whole weekend without the air conditioner working?" But they said, "Well, there's nothing that we could do."
I called back Home Shield and the lady was very rude. Every time I tried to explain myself, she said, "Well, what do you want us to do? We have our guidelines." I told her that the company that they dispatched my claim to should have the courtesy to call me and say that they were not gonna be able to make it. They should let me know where I'm standing. Don't give me a telephone number to call them, and then when I call them, they say, "Nobody's in." Then when I call back, they say everybody left for the day. It was only 1:30. That's ridiculous.
I called back Home Shield again and I got another gentleman. He was very polite. He dispatched my claim to another company. But it was 4:00 by then. So I knew that nobody would call me back from the company that late. I wound up calling the company and the automated machine came on and it said to leave a message. I left a message, but I didn't get a call back. But by then, my air conditioning unit kicked back in. So I wound up calling and canceling that day and I was fine with it. The unit worked Friday, but on Saturday, it cut off again. But that was the only issue that I had with Home Shield.
I used Home Shield for my TV and there was a slight little problem, but the manager rectified it. I also used them for my oven because the igniter went out. The guy came out and he was very pleasant. At least he called me. He was very, very pleasant. American Home Shield keep their promise about getting the person to do the service.
I got the platinum contract and I told the rep, "Listen, I own my home, so I would need service on my water heater that needs to be drained, just to check the air conditioner from the beginning of the summer." He said, "Oh, no problem. That'll be done." But two weeks ago, the girl told me, "If the stuff is not broke, then they won't come out and service it." I said, "Huh? The item actually got to be broken?" I was told, "Yes, the item has to be broke for the service guy to come out." So I was a little disappointed with that one.

There have been times when it’s been difficult to reach American Home Shield, but they have done a lot of good work for me with the refrigerator and the hot tank. I just had to pay to bring it to code, which I understand. Overall, I’m satisfied. It does offer some peace of mind that if something does happen, I may have a resource to go to.
As far as the coverage, I was initially told the AC would be completely covered, and that wasn’t. They offered the other person some money for an air conditioner, but I didn’t know how much. So, that was kind of odd. Also, sometimes, you don’t hear back from them for a while. Sometimes, they’ll say, “All right, someone will be in touch with you in 24 to 48 hours,” but you don’t hear back from them. I end up having to call them. Sometimes, getting the actual product is a challenge, too. I waited months and months for the fridge. The deductible is another hurt piece. I have to pay $100. I’m the one who got my mom signed up, and I pay more than she does in the deductible. Other than those, the people that are taking the call and setting up the service are pretty good.

My AC wasn't cooling and the coil needed to be replaced. The techs got it done. They were professional, quick and on time. I like that I'm learning a lot about American Home Shield. I don't know all the coverages but I'm learning there's some flexibility in the service repairs. If all the ones that are in the network are not available, there are other ways to get contractors in there to get it completed. When summer comes and everyone's AC is out, I'm not stuck with these providers.
But the guys who were sent out were on it. They ended up staying later than normal hours but they were professional. They were calling me and letting me know what was going on like when the parts came into the warehouse. There was some hiccup in what was sent out to the warehouse but they got it straightened out.

A storm came through and knocked the air conditioners out. It was at nighttime. I went to church and when I came back, the house was hot. I went back outside and neither air conditioner was working. That Monday, the 29th, I got in contact with American Home Shield. They charged me $75 and said Assured Climate Control was coming out here to take a look at it. They did not come in here until the 5th of July. It was steaming in this house. When the guy came, he said, "Some of your wires got damaged." He fixed it. It wasn't even two weeks and he had to come back. He had to put a capacitor in. That was on the 22nd of July. He said I really need a new air conditioner and that was what I tried to explain to American Home Shield.
I'm getting ready to drop them because when they come out to your house and you need Freon, they only pay $10 for the first pound. You have to pay for the rest. I had to get three pounds of Freon and the Freon ended up costing me $620. The tech said the fan is not working right and it was something else he said in the compressor. I said, "Why can't they just go and repair it? Just give me another air condition?" He said they got to fix it all the way down to the point where there's nothing else they can fix. It was a long drawn-out process and I know Assured was short of technicians but it was a kind of hairy situation for a while.

We had an AC issue and when the folks that AHS sent out first diagnosed it, they said it was the compressor in the outside unit. But our unit had a two-stage compressor and they said they didn't work on that, so AHS had to reassign a new company. Then we found out that American Home Shield closed our claim instead of assigning a new company. So, I called and let them know that we got a 110 degree heat index outside every day and every day counts. I told them that I needed them to spend time calling to find another company that worked on a two-stage so that we could get some air going. As soon as we contacted them, they stayed on the phone and called company after company until they got one that worked on the two-stage compressor.
They had another company by the end of that day, but I was glad I called and followed up because I didn't know if that would have happened. The second company was able to get somebody out within a couple of days and they confirmed what the first company said. We were told we needed a new compressor and that they would have to order it. I had a friend who said it was an eight-week backlog on the compressors because they're older models and to replace the Freon it was going to be $3,000 out of pocket. But those were all spelled out in the contract, so it was not an American Home Shield issue.
In the end, I called back to American Home Shield and talked to them about a cash in lieu option. They gave me the amount for the check they would write, so we went forward with just hiring a company to come out and put a brand new unit in. We got the invoice today and in the next day or two, we'll be submitting that to American Home Shield.

American Home Shield was referred to me by my son’s in-laws. They've had them for a long time and use the warranty service all the time. They praised the company up and down. I'm liking American Home Shield's service. Their response was quick. Our AC wasn't keeping the house cool. I would have it set at 74 and my house would go up to 79 or 80. I took a picture of my thermostat to show where I normally keep the setting at so they could see what it was doing because it was really weird. During the day it would hold the temperature fine. It would be 4 o'clock or later that it would start climbing. By 10 o'clock at night, it would reach its max before it would finally start going down at around 4 o’clock in the morning.
As soon as the AC broke, I took my 86-year-old father to my son’s house because he started slurring his words and I got really concerned. I had to go out and buy a portable AC and put it in my room to keep my dogs as comfortable as possible. When a service guy came, he picked up that the circulation of the fan didn't sound proper. I was impressed with that. He went up and he looked at the AC itself and it was fine. But there was a box that connects the thermostat to the AC and controls the whole airflow. It died while he was here and it was hot to the touch. It took a week of 95-degree temperature in my house. He had to order the new part and put that in. The guy was really awesome and very knowledgeable. I'm really pleased.

We've had a couple of challenges of late with AHS. The AC vendor was good but it took a while before they got out here. I also had to pay for freon and that was $1,000. For the plumber, it took over a week before he showed up. We paid the $75 but he couldn't fix it, so I had to buy a new faucet because it was under the exclusions, which there's a lot of. I've been a member for almost 20 years now. Couldn't do anything. I bought the faucet and he said he'd install it for me. Then I got an or estimate of 650 bucks to put the faucet on so I canceled that. I just had a contractor do it for a tenth of the cost.
Overall, I've been pleased with the program. It's provided the value though sometimes, it's good and sometimes, it's bad. I run an operation myself. If somebody comes out and they can't fix the problem, to A, refund the call, $75 and B, there could be a lot less exclusions that are hidden. Thirdly, while I can afford to do it, for a lot of people, $1,000 for freon on the spot would be a challenge. I don't know if there's a way for AHS to build that into the cost of the monthly premium. I'd pay $10 more a month and have less exclusions and out-of-pockets than save the $10 a month and have all these exclusions, out-of-pockets on an emergency basis. I would assume the general public would probably feel that way too.

I had to call AHS twice. The reps gave me what the companies were and both companies came quickly. One call was for a garbage disposal that wouldn't turn on. The techs put a new one in. But then, a few days later, my dishwasher wouldn't drain. I had also been having trouble with my ice maker. So I called to ask them to send someone out for those. The dishwasher was not draining because when the techs put the garbage disposal in, there was something they were supposed to attach and they didn't do it.
For the icemaker, they said that Samsung had a problem with that all the time. So, we had to wait a couple of weeks for the part. When it came, they fixed the icemaker. But the problem is still the same, it makes ice and ice cubes. Somehow, it puts water in with them because they turn into a big clump. But the techs were all very nice people and they got right to the job. They didn't make a big mess. I'm always happy with American Home Shield. and the way that I can just call and they send someone over. I elected to keep the coverage 'cause everything's so expensive. My AC broke down in middle of May, AHS sent out a contractor to fix the problem. I paid $650 to their contractor for out of pocket. 35 days later, the AC broke down again, and I requested the last contractor out to fix the problem. After 3 weeks waiting, they told me I have to pay $1056 out of pocket cost. I contacted the contractor and they told me that I should contact AHS and see if they can waive the refrigerant because I already paid last time. He also told me that, the cost total should cost $2600-$2800 without the warranty. After talking to AHS, the contractor texted me and told me AHS transferred my work for second opinion. However, AHS told me that the contractor didn't want to work in my area, even though he was there 3 times and worked on the AC in May. The second contractor didn't show up at the appointment and I had to call AHS to know that the second contractor wanted to transfer again. The third contractor finally came out a week later.
Then, after a lot of calls (and go through a lot of lies and excuses from AHS) I got my out of pocket cost now is $1560. This is 6 weeks after I placed the second work order. AHS finally offered me a cash out offer. They would offer me only $850, which is what they would have paid to the third vendor. I requested a breakdown of the cost, AHS said that only the contractor can give out. I called the contractor and they said only AHS can do that and they do that all the time. However, he did said that $1500 is around half of what I should have paid, so the total is around $3000. So why did AHS offer only $850? I then call AHS, and they told me that it is confidential.
After 6 weeks of no AC, a lot of calls (and hearing 24-48hr waits), and 4 times request to talk to manager to review all the conversations, I got ZERO call back. Why don't they give the breakdown cost to me? Why is there so much mismatch between agents and contractors? 6 weeks of no AC, what is AHS' responsibility? The last contractor even told me I should change the system at this point. After that long of leaking (6weeks), the outside unit is very damaged.
The strange thing is that the company dismisses me when I want them to explain why there is mismatching information between them and their vendors. They refuse to show the breakdown of the cost and they don't want to take any responsibility of 6 week waiting period. It is not illegal, but it is not ethical. They eventually said that the vendor can charge as much as they want if the work is not covered by AHS.

We offer to pick up the part. They said, "Sorry can't do that. We will see you Monday the 15th." They had put us down for Thursday the 18th. We argued that our appointment is for today. They said they can't help us as someone called out sick. They proceeded to lie to the warranty company and say the part still hasn't arrived and they can't help us.
We have been sleeping downstairs to help with the heat last week but we are going into an excessive heat warning and I can't believe how South Placer could care less. Definitely won't be using them when we upgrade our AC. Steer away from them and if you ever use your warranty company tell them you want someone else. I have 22 people locally commenting on Facebook. I haven't went on Next Door yet. We will also be dropping American Home Shield because they refuse to help us even though South Placer Heating and Air can't come out until Thursday at the earliest. DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL. I have been paying them for more than 4 years now, and about a month ago my AC broke, so I called them for the first time, they sent me a contractor who said that the indoor unit need to be replaced. I kept trying to reach both the contractor and AHS until finally, they sent me an e-mail saying that they partially approved the request and that they will pay for the indoor unit replacement but there is out of a pocket amount I need to pay as it is not covered which is $2980.
I was shocked by this number & I asked for the details of this amount. Finally, the contractor sent me an e-mail with the breakdown of this amount which is half of this amount is the refrigerant (8lb of R22) & the other half is for the small piece of duct modification above the unit due to the difference in dimension between the old & new one (less than 1 foot of ductwork), the drain modification for the new unit (small PVC pipe, less than 10 LF) & the wire connection for the new unit.
For sure this big amount for just small modifications and still I will have the old R22 system did not make sense to me & I asked for the cash in lieu option on August 1st, they told me, "We will get back to you within 24 to 48 hours," but this did not happen. I kept calling them until August 11, they told me on the phone that "You can get $541 for the replacement of the unit & its installation."
I asked to get it in email & to speak to a manager, but till now (August 15) I did not receive an e-mail with the cash in lieu option. I called them several times and I asked to speak to supervisors many times without any success to get this issue resolved. Today August 15 I called them, and I was surprised that they are telling me the cash option is not anymore available as the part is ordered although I did not accept to proceed, and I told them many times that I will not pay this huge amount. I am still waiting for the escalation department to call me. Not sure if they even care about their customers.

On the way home, he said he would drive by and install the water pump if he could find one. He did find one in town and he came by on the way home from work and put it in. It only took him a few minutes. The swamp cooler is cooling now and it's doing a lot better. It's keeping the house cool so we're happy.

I was very unhappy with American Home Shield's service in the past year. But recently, it's been amazing. I had two different properties serviced and it was timely. Part of my problem was that I would call and it took forever for a contractor to get in touch with me and come out. That changed. I did have one slight issue with the AC repair where the vendor never called. When I called him, he said he didn't service the area. But the guy was really good and he put me in touch with another vendor. I can go months without anything being wrong. But when I needed to get something repaired, it was just astronomical. I'd rather be safe and have American Home Shield in my back pocket if need be. I'm really grateful.

A friend of mine had her pressure regulator go out and it was gonna be $1,500 to fix it. The whole warranty covered it. I got myself Home Shield for my home warranty and they're great. I used their service when my dishwasher wouldn't drain. A tech looked underneath and then he ran it. He realized that the pump motor that pumps all the water out was broken. He told me that he was going to order a new one. About almost three weeks later, he called me up and said that they had the part. He came out and fixed the dishwasher. The guy then found that the heater part doesn't dry the dishes all the way. He said I would have to put it in another claim to Home Shield for that fix. He was great.

The contractor that American Home Shield sent out was fine. But they let me know and they also put on the invoice that they wouldn't be able to help. I touched base with American Home Shield and they were trying to send me back to the contractor. They said that they would call back but I haven't heard anything from them.
The contractor came two or three times trying to figure out what the issue is. They were saying, "You're gonna have to go through your insurance company to send out a different contractor, because we can't handle what the issue is." They would like to help me but they just aren't able to do that. That's just not their services.
Initially, the person from American Home Shield wanted me to pay $1,800 and then she was gonna contact the contractor to come back out. But I said that I didn't want to pay that amount since the contractor already told me no. She said that she was gonna reach out to the contractor to get that invoice. I was asking, "Hey, can I just email it to you?" She said that she didn't have an email address. This experience was not that great. It may have just been a language barrier. But at the end of the day, my unit wasn't fixed. I love the contractor that I was referred to. They were super nice and very accommodating. But with the overall customer service experience and actually getting the unit fixed, I was dissatisfied.

If I set the AC to 78 or 80, it would turn to 75 by itself. That started happening for a few weeks. All of a sudden, it stopped working. Techs came out and they changed something on there, on the outside. The air started working but it continued to change. I asked them to come out again and they said that was because the thermostat is programmed. We're the original owners and we never programmed that. If you're the air conditioning and heating person, you should be able to fix whatever program you're talking about, because I don't know what you're referring to. But they didn't do that.
We had claims for our refrigerator and sink as well. With the sink, the techs said that there was no drainage hole to run a snake. They would not honor the claim even though I paid the $100 deductible. With the refrigerator, the techs changed the ice maker. But after that, the ice continues to get stuck in between. It's coming out and fully coming out the door. Eventually, I'll be sitting in the den and hear a piece of ice that drops or it has melted down the front of the refrigerator.
The same people were sent out initially. The tech didn't even communicate English well enough for me to even speak with him. I called the company he came from so maybe I could three-way our conversation so we could get something done. That didn't happen. The next thing I know, the tech had a screwdriver. I was talking to a lady on the phone and asked what he was doing, She goes, "He's taking back off the icemaker and put back on the old one and he's gonna leave." I was so upset. His hands were dirty and he got everything dirty. That means he didn't even wash his hands from his last appointment. We are still in a pandemic.
American Home Shield closed the referral but the job was not even completed. They said, “You put them out.” I did because there was no need for the tech to be there. He was not doing anything. I called back and spoke with another representative. He opened a claim back up for me and had someone else come out. I have to call them because it's been two weeks. They were supposed to order something and come back and put it on. The tech said, "This thing is closing real slow." That was why it was getting stuck. I've never heard back from them.
I apologize for the inconvenience we've caused. My name is Stacy and I will contact you about your ongoing concerns.

I travel around the United States for my work so I can't be home to accommodate my wife when something goes wrong. I purchased this coverage from American Home Shield. Two years ago, the heater quit working. My wife called me and I called the warranty company. For the premium or the deductible, technicians came out and fixed the heater.
We also set up an appointment to have our garbage disposal serviced as it quit working. It took about a week for someone to come out but that was on my schedule as I wasn't able to be home. A young man got here and was punctual. He replaced the garbage disposal and was gone in 15 or 20 minutes. Everything was fine. American Home Shield is a no-brainer if you ask me and I wouldn't be without it. It saves me money. So far, all the vendors were spot on.

I had some issues with one of my garage doors not opening. As soon as I submitted the claim with AHS, they right away provided the name and phone number of the contractor. They said either they’d call me or I could call them. So, I called them and they came out. The tech checked the wiring on the main unit. He did some soldering because he said it was loose. He adjusted some of the springs. Because my garage used to shake a little bit when it would open and close. He fixed all that. Ever since he left, it’s been working fine. It was great. I used a different garage door company for another issue I had two years ago. I found out that they ripped me off. This contractor I used was an honest guy. He told me, “The price you paid for that one service, I would have charged less than half.” It was a good experience. AHS is worth it, as opposed to something breaking in my house and paying thousands of dollars to fix. I’d definitely recommend them.

We have two policies with AHS. Recently, we had no air conditioning on Thursday afternoon. I put a claim via the website of AHS. I did not hear from anybody until around 6:00 in the morning when I received an email at 1:00 in the morning that they had assigned somebody to it. They told me in the email stated that if I needed to, I could get in touch with them during business hours. At 7:00 in the morning, I called and spoke to somebody. They told me that the earliest they could come was Tuesday. This was Friday morning. They also told me I could call AHS and see if they have somebody else that could come earlier.
I called AHS up. They said they'd try to see if they could find somebody. They contacted the company. They said the earliest they could come was Monday. I said if any way that anybody could come earlier. Because the woman wanted me to cancel the Tuesday to do the Monday and they were going to see if they can find something, but I needed to first cancel. I said I didn't want to be left hanging where I was not going to have anybody. Then called back to this Monday because there wasn't anything that could be done sooner. They said by that point, that Monday was no longer available. I have to wait until Tuesday. They told me that there was another company that they found on a Monday.
I spoke to the woman and asked her if it went through as an expedite. She said, "No. It came as a regular." I said, "But we’re asking to expedite because of health issues. How early could you do it with expedite?" She said, "Monday." I said, "Okay. It will make no difference for us to call you guys back." We settled it with Monday that this company was coming. On Saturday morning, we went out, and then I got a phone call in the morning telling me that they'd be able to come on that day on Saturday, that they got something expedited and if we would be here at 9:30 or if someone was available. I said, "Yes." The tech came in at 9:30 and he fixed whatever he found that was wrong with it. He left around 10:30. He seemed knowledgeable and was very quiet. He also fixed it. I considered at the beginning to cancel both of my policies. But because of the fact that it ended up being repaired and fixed, so I just checked them.

We woke up one day and we had no air conditioning. I filed the claim online and I had to pay 125 to have a technician come out and look at it. The tech told me the unit needed Freon and had to put two pounds of it in. American Home Shield only covered $10 a pound and I had to pay the other $150 per pound to get it taken care of. That hit me by surprise. That cost me close to $500 to get the unit fixed. It probably would have been cheaper just to do it on my own. Everything's working now. The contracting company was very professional, nice, and explained everything. They were very quick to respond compared to the other home repair company I had before. I also have issues with the contractors that come out with having to have them come back out multiple times 'cause they're not fixing the issue. It becomes more of a hassle than anything else. I would also like some notification when they change policies. At one point, when I first got the service, you can pay the $100 service fee once someone has come out. But now it has to be paid prior to someone coming out. Once you go to the website to put in a ticket, it's there and you have to make that payment. American Home Shield sent someone out the first time who changed the blower motor. It was bad. After they left, it was working, but then it was making a strange noise. So, I had them come back on a return call. They came back and checked it out. The guy that checked it out said everything was okay, but a couple of weeks later, it was doing the same thing. So, the original tech came back out. He determined that it was a clogged line that's inside. So, he unclogged it. He suggested that we do a coil clean, which is, within the unit and not outside once again. He came back and did a coil clean and everything was working after that. With AHS, response time is good. Ease of ordering services is good. Just get online and put an order in to get service. And it's pretty quick. If they don't fix it, I don't get an additional charge because it's the original problem. So, I'm not quite sure it makes sense for a small family if they don't have so many things going on if they bought their appliances new and they might not need so much repairs.

I called AHS because the fan in the forced air conditioning and heating blew the fuse, and it was pausing before it started. The tech came out and opened up the heater box where the fan is, and there was a dropper to water there. He said that had a clogged pipe, and he blew the pipe out. He changed the capacitor on the fan motor. Since he left, the fan motor has not blown the fuse again. But when the air conditioning turns on, and I can touch the side of it, it's vibrating.
His interpretation was he put a capacitor on it, and it works, which shocks the fan to turn it on. If the old capacitor was there, it would just hum and eventually blow the circuit breaker, and it wouldn't work because the bearings are going out on it. But when it runs, it really makes a lot of noise now. It was really quiet, you could hardly hear it before. I felt that he didn’t really address the issue. But he might have walked away thinking he did because the fan was working every time. Since he left, it has been working.
We’ve had AHS for years, since '94. If they can’t repair it, they replace it with the same or better. If you have one or two major appliances go down in a five-year period, you paid for that insurance coverage, so you can’t beat it. You call them, somebody comes. When they come and they do the work, they do the work. But sometimes, the timeframe depending on what is gone isn’t that great. But they provide good service.

My garage door wasn’t opening and it was not closing either, and I have to manually do it. The two guys came in very promptly as scheduled. They were wearing polo shirts but with their logo of the company and were very professional. Within two minutes, they were able to diagnose the problem, By the sound of the motor, they said all they needed was a coupler and it took them about 15 minutes to replace it. The guy also gave me some advice and tips and offered some other products.
During early spring or early winter or fall, AHS usually sends out a promotional offer. Instead of paying $100, you only have to pay $75 for a technician to come and take a look at your HVAC. So, when winter or summertime comes, your heating and cooling system is working fine. They just do some tune-up things. One time, I availed that promotional offer and the guy did something more than what was expected. He replaced some sensors and said that one is not good anymore. It cost me more than what I thought. I thought it was only 75 bucks but I ended up with almost $200. I've been on American Home Shield for two years now and there is a monthly payment of $50. It sucks that for every home shield company, there's always a $100 show up fee to every troubleshooting problem that you put in. That might cover the labor and expense and parts, depending on the problem. But not all problems in the house are covered with that.

The service has been really good and AHS has been taking good care of us. I'm happy with the service. It helps us plan for what goes wrong with our home. It also helps with budget and expenses. We have a washer that's pretty old but they have kept it running. Recently, a tech fixed our high-end refrigerator. He was very proactive and professional. We were thrilled with it. It's always nice to have something solved the first time but when you don't have the parts, you don't have the parts.

I like the service because I've used it here in this house and the house I had previously. Everything has been repaired. Any issues I've had were not from the American Home Shield's side. They were always the people that come out. I had some faucets replaced. And the original faucets that were in here were leaking badly and were stainless steel. The tech replaced the one in the bathroom with a stainless steel faucet. But when I moved the kitchen faucet, I noticed it was plastic. I didn't notice it because it's chrome plated, and not until after the tech left. It's maybe insulated because the hot water doesn't melt it and it doesn't get hot when the water goes through it. But it's very flimsy. I do a lot of cooking. And the moment that a pot flips out of my hand and hits that faucet, it's gonna snap in half. I have never in my almost 70 years seen a plastic faucet in my life. But I understand times change. Otherwise, it has been okay.
I had one guy in my previous home come out because the garage door opener worked weird. This guy came out and said, "That's not the problem. You need a new garage door. And I don't do that." But there was nothing wrong with the garage door. And he said, "But my brother-in-law does garage doors." I said, "That's all right. Thank you very much. Goodbye." And that was the only time. Otherwise, the coverage is good. And I have a hot water heater that's starting to not heat as well. So that will probably be my next call.
I wish sometimes that I could get a list of the people who are contracted for a specific project so that I could make a choice, check out reviews. AHS could send an email, "These are the people that are contracted to do that job. Would you like to choose one or would you like us to choose one for you?" They need to be customer service oriented and let the customer think they're making the choice. And if it doesn't go well, they could have them give their review. And if they get enough complaints, they can remove that person from being contracted with them.

We noticed some leaking or water coming out of the AC 4 SEER unit. It has filters dripping. The filters back up periodically. The guy said that happens. That was $100 that I had to pay for. That guy came out. He explained what the issue was since it's common. You have to every once in a while put some vinegar or bleach down the drain to kill the naturally occurring bioactivity in the water that will then cause it to back up. And when it backs up, it takes the least resistance. It comes to the filters and drips down. He blew it out and it's fine. He told me to do that every month. That was a decent visit.
We just bought a house here in Florida, July 1st. We moved in on the 15th. But they had taken out a policy to give us a one-year warranty coverage. So, I did not know that American Home Shield charges $100 for every time I call on an incident. We're coming in to a house that's new to us, but not new to this world. And there were issues that weren't addressed supposedly, that's why they do the warranty. I came in and I tied to open the garage door, it started pulling up and bam, something popped and it stopped going up. We had to manually open the garage for a few days.
We called it in. I would have preferred just to replace it. I can do most repairs myself. I've been doing stuff in this house since I got here. But since they have the warranty, "You should call them for the warranty and they'll come out. And they'll either fix it or replace it or whatever." I would like that particular garage door opener, but whatever the case may be, they charged me 100 bucks to have somebody come out. They took the longest to come out.
When the people came to do the garage, the first thing the guy started doing was to lift the garage door. I said, "Well, the wheels aren't the problem. I can get the garage up when I pull it up manually. So I imagine that a good garage door opener should be able to get it up. Go ahead and look at the garage." I showed him a gear that had flown off, which drives the garage door that was on the ground. I handed it to him. He looked at that and he did stuff. And he said, "Oh, it's kind of stiff. Those wheels need to be lubricated and this and that."
I said, "You know what? I really don't care what they should be. They are what they are. I bought a house that was made in 2003. So, you figure. I'm assuming this is the original garage door, it's in whatever condition it is. You guys are the ones that have the service to back it, not me." I didn't expect anybody to do anything for something that's that old. But if someone's paying for the service and that means that person said, "Yeah. We'll do it."
Next thing I knew, he told me, "They won't cover that repair 'cause it's pre-existing." I said, "What's pre-existing? It being old? It was pre-existing from the time that this thing was bought. The house was bought and the service was provided. So what are you talking about?" And he said, This thing wasn't working." I said, "No. It was working until it wasn't working. I saw it break. I'm not gonna sit here and pretend or make up a story for fun just so that you could do it and say it was working. It didn't work fully for me. But I saw it break." That means it's working enough. So in this case, this is a situation where it worked until it didn't work. When we came here, they said, "The garage door is working now." We pulled it up and down. I said, "Oh, good. It's working." We just moved in a bunch of boxes and stuff stored in there. So we did not pull it up and left it up because I was not putting the car in it. I turned it up, it started to go up and it broke.
The fact that he did that, I was not happy. Because then he tried to sell me on what they could do to repair it. I said, "What is this? This is some kind of scam. You guys come here and you guys pretend to be going to fix something. You try to find fault with it so that it's not repairable. So, they don't have to pay for it. And you guys get the business. I'm not going to have you guys do anything. You guys can leave now." The guy went around messing with the sensors that had anything to do with the thing going up or down, which it doesn't. It only has something to do with it going down if that was my complaint, but that wasn't my complaint.
I talked to AHS. They called me back and tried to get me to have someone else come out look at it. I said, "Not gonna happen. Because there's nothing in this house I can't fix. I can buy a garage door and fix it myself. I don't need someone to take something that's old and tell me that, 'Oh, it's too old or it doesn't work.' Did you guys do an inspection of this before you guys did the policy? How did you guys verify what was going to be covered and what's not? Because I wasn't told." So it's not like they would say, "We will insure the house or we'll warranty all the things in the house." They make it sound so good when technically, they're not inspecting.
When I get insurance for my car, they want to see my car. They want to check my mileage. They want to verify that they're insuring something that's valid. And I'm not trying to get anything free. And I'm moving in to a home that I'm replacing things. I'm replacing lamps not because they break or because they don't work, but because I don't like them. I want it to look newer. So there are some things I don't even want to repair. That garage door opener, I would have replaced it on my own. But the fact that they said, "It's covered. You can call us. We can come out and do it." And they come out and they don't do anything. They said would credit me the service charge. Fine. They wanted to send someone else out to do electrical stuff. I said, "No. Not going to happen." Because I am not going to have somebody tell me, "Oh, this is old” or “this switch” or whatever. It turned out I was able to figure out the electrical stuff myself.
You call a person, you tell him, "Yes, you have your service with us. Here's what they purchased for you and you may not be aware of. And here's how it works and impacts you. There may be some items that will not be covered. And we'll need to verify that." No one wants to know or think that someone's coming to do something for them, only to find out that they were just determining whether or not they were going to claim the work or not. Because when you are buying a warranty for something that's used already, you pretty much expect it is what it is.
We thought the realtors were doing us a favor. I wanted the people to fix certain things before we get here. And if not, I want this much credit because I'm going to have to do it myself. Because I'm gonna pay $100. That can get expensive. And I don't want to make it attractive for them to just dump it on. Whatever reason our realtors seem to be scared to ask the people for anything or to make any types of corrections, so they thought it would be a brilliant idea to just buy a home warranty and that home warranty should cover anything that comes up. But they didn't explain to me. Maybe they didn't know. The warranty is not there just to say, "We're paying this company. They're gonna fix whatever is not working." I got enough sense to not expect that. Otherwise, AHS will go out of business.
For just $50 a month, I can buy a policy from them and they would fix everything from the kitchen sink to my TV. But that's not realistic. The person has to be criminal to say, "Oh, I'm gonna buy a policy from them. Then I'm gonna have them fix the whole house." So that's not what I'm about and that's certainly not what I expected. I said, "That's a legitimate thing, the garage door going out. I don't know why you would want to cover something like that when most cases if it's old, why are you repairing it?"
I would have said, "Never mind, because I really want to buy my own garage opener. I want one that has this feature, the one with a battery backup." They're not going to do that for me. They're there to do whatever garage door that was in here. If they told me, I would have been fine. I might have been, "What do they cover?" type of thing. But I'd rather be in that position than have them waste my time and have me calling, being encouraged that, "Hey, you got this for a year, you need to make sure you check things and make sure what's not working and what's not, so they can get it fixed."
But that was the impression. So, I thought it was something different. Then I found out that it was AHS and I know what they do. I've heard people say, "It'll cost you every time you had someone come out. But also that something they will only repair and they won't replace even if they've been out and worked on it four or five different times." I don't want to be in that situation.

The customer service reps are mostly friendly, some are very hard to understand, they all promise to get the matter resolved and none of them have followed through.
We need our a/c repaired and they have failed to do so. (Even though I agreed to the $1895 out of pocket expenses) I have called many times and I cannot get the same CSR (customer service rep) so each and every time I have to explain my problems with AHS from the beginning. Each CSR promises that they will resolve my problems but never do. I mailed a letter to AHS at the only address I could find for them and to date still no reply. AHS doesn't care to fulfill their obligations nor care about their customer(s). Save your money and go elsewhere with a company that has an actual customer service dept. AHS offered a cash out of about $1,100 for me to get the a/c unit replaced. The contractor sent me a bill for almost $11,000. Of course I said, "No thank you."

American Home Shield has been a godsend. I've renewed the policy every year. I've had things go wrong and American Home Shield had a technician come out. The technician repaired or replaced it, and it cost me $75. A contractor came out because my air conditioning unit was leaking and the drain was not draining through. They told me that my fan on my air conditioner was broken and that was why I've got water coming into the basement.
I wish when you spoke to the people when you're calling for a claim, you could understand them better. But they always do go above and beyond. My friends tell me, “You're the only person I know who has had good luck with a home warranty.” The only complaint I have was that I had a nice faucet, and when it broke, they gave me a crappy one. They told me it would be equal but it wasn't even equal. The funniest thing was they didn’t even know. I told them I didn't have the spigot so that it goes from the stream to shower. I discovered six months later cleaning the sink that it turned and that's how it became shower. The only person I didn't like was the guy who ordered my faucet. He was a jerk and quit before the install. But the other people that I have dealt with have been fabulous. There's one company that I like that when I call them, I tell them I want to get the guy the I like. He came out when my air conditioner was broken.

We requested repair and American Home Shield jerked around for about five days. I called two or three times and they said nobody was available. I had already talked to R & T Mechanical because they had done it before through American Home Shield. They said they had an open schedule and I would just need to give them the number and they would know. I called customer service and I told them what R & T Mechanical said. They told me that they were not in my area. I understood that but nobody else is in my area. They're the closest and less than an hour away. About a day and a half later, they finally got approval after R & T Mechanical called the home warranty field rep and asked why they could not get the deal. I was trying really hard and I called three or four times.
Once they got the approval, R & T was there that day. It was then on American Home Shield. It was seven days and it was longer than it should have been when I was already giving them a vendor that they could use that's in their system. They just wouldn't look up the difference in mileage or area. It was frustrating on the side of American Home Shield. I just wish they’d listen more. R & T Mechanical, on the other hand, was awesome. The last few times we called, they've been Johnny-on-the-spot. They took care of business and did what they needed to do. They were really respectful too.

I'm handy around the house. Plumbing, electricity and all that. But we're busy people so I don't have time for it. And if I need parts, especially for air conditioning, they don't just sell them off the shelf. That's where American Home Shield comes in handy. And I like the records tracking. So if we sell the house someday, I can say, “Here's all the service that’s been done, new up to X.” We've had a garbage disposal put in, and a couple of faucets fixed. A contractor came out for the heater one time. For the air conditioning, two times. We even got our washer and dryer on there. We've gotten our money's worth. You pay a plumber, it's 70 to 80 bucks an hour. It’s a minimum two hours kind of thing.
AHS has up to 24 hours to find you somebody. It takes longer than I would like, but they still beat the 24 hours. They tell me the company, email, website and a phone number. And they say, “If they don't contact you in three days or something, then you can contact them.” I would just wait, and usually, they call within a day after being assigned. A day or two was the max. Whoever makes their appointments call me up.
We had a claim a couple of years back for the AC. It was the circuit board. So, I went out and checked it. It went out on a Tuesday when it was 114 for three days in a row. I was spraying water on the AC and checked it out, and ended up being the contactor fried. It just fried the wire. The tech said it was still good. But it fried because I wasn't cleaning it properly on the one side where the fins are in the grate.
To do that, I have to take off the cover and shut off the power. I didn't know to do that. So I would clean the other three sides. But he said it was all cruddy in there. So, he took a meter to it, and said that after it was cleaned, it dropped 10 amps of usage. What had happened was it was pulling extra amps, got too hot, and burned those wires up. And with those 114 degree days, we didn’t shut it off. So I couldn't wait because it was like a five-day wait, and it's still 100 degrees in the house, so we went to a hotel for one night and went back out there. I’m an aircraft mechanic by trade so I actually found the problem and rewired it and had it working.
I didn't know why it burned up but I knew how to repair wires so I still had him come out. He said, “Okay. Great job on the wiring.” He helped me clean out and showed me how to clean it properly in the future as a prevention method, which was awesome. He explained the whole thing. And we could talk the same language, we're both electricians, and our fields are very similar. He was able to break it down for me. And it was a good experience. The one thing I wish he would have put in the statement was the wire did fry. Because when you look at it, it says nothing was found, that it was just dirty.
We've made some adjustments to the plan this last year to where it's a higher deductible but it keeps the monthly cost down. I realized we could make the monthly cost lower. It's only 40 bucks a month. And each instance is 125. We used it very much the first two years, cross our fingers, so we're hopefully using it less frequent. So, the higher premium for each instance is worth it.

Our air conditioning went out on the hottest day of the summer and the vendor couldn't come out until four days later. Asked if we could get another vendor from the ones that they have and was told that it's about that type of delay. It is what it is, but when you're in 100-degree heat and you got no AC, that's a problem. But the techs I've worked with have been good.

I like the services that American Home Shield has been providing and I’ve had several claims with them. I had one for my dishwasher and for electric. That took forever and I had to eventually resolve that on my own, even though several different companies had come out. One thing that guys from the service companies did not want to do was to go up in my attic and that was where the problem was at. I had to hire a guy on my own to get that electrical issue fixed now. Their guy went to the attic to fix things.
The last service I received in my Virginia home was about my air conditioner thermostat and that was done quickly and reasonably. I was really happy with them. The professionalism was very much there. The techs went as far as to check my system to see if there would be any more problems or potentially any more problems. They told me that it was gonna take so many hours for my house to cool to a reasonable temperature and I appreciated that. They provided a good service. In general, American Home Shield's coverage is good. I recommended it to my brother in North Carolina who signed up and got the service.
