How Aetna Medicare Advantage works

Aetna Medicare Advantage plans are private Medicare Part C plans that combine Original Medicare’s Part A hospital and Part B medical coverage into one policy. Many of these include prescription drug coverage and may offer additional benefits like dental, vision and hearing care, depending on the plan you choose.

Unlike Original Medicare, Aetna plans may use provider networks and require members to follow plan rules for referrals or out-of-network care. It offers HMO, HMO-POS and PPO plans, plus Special Needs Plans if you qualify based on Medicaid eligibility, certain chronic conditions or institutional care.

Plans are available in select counties, and Aetna offers a tool to see if you’re covered based on your ZIP code. To enroll, you must have Medicare Part A and Part B and choose a plan during your Initial Enrollment Period or through a Special Enrollment Period.

Aetna Medicare Advantage plans

Aetna Medicare Advantage plans, also called Part C plans, provide Medicare Part A and Part B coverage through a private insurer. Depending on your plan, you might also get prescription drug coverage and benefits like dental, vision, hearing or fitness benefits.

Aetna offers HMO, HMO-POS AND PPO Medicare Advantage plans, as well as Special Needs Plans if you qualify. Your plans, costs, provider networks and benefits vary based on which county you live in, but Aetna has a tool for you to enter your ZIP code to compare your local options.

Aetna’s monthly premiums, copays, drug coverage, provider networks and out-of-pocket limits differ by plan and location. Many Medicare Advantage members pay the Part B premium in addition to any plan premium, so compare your fixed costs and expected care costs before you enroll.

Aetna Medicare Advantage coverage

Rather than through Original Medicare, Aetna’s Medicare Advantage plans provide Medicare Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurer. Most of these plans include Part D prescription drug coverage, and some Aetna plans even offer additional benefits like dental, vision, hearing and fitness coverage. Your benefits and costs vary by plan and location.

Aetna Medicare Advantage cost

Aetna doesn’t publish its prices for Medicare Advantage plans because your premiums, deductibles and copays vary based on what county you’re in and what plan you choose. However, it has at least one plan with a $0 monthly premium in every county it serves. A $0 premium doesn’t eliminate the Medicare Part B premium or other out-of-pocket costs, though, so you always want to compare what your total costs will be and never just look at what your premium is.

FAQ

What Medicare Advantage plans does Aetna offer?

Aetna offers HMO, HMO-POS and PPO plans, plus Special Needs Plans for people who qualify.

How much does Aetna Medicare Advantage cost?

Aetna Medicare Advantage costs vary by plan and location. Aetna offers at least one $0 monthly premium option in every county it serves for 2026, but you’ll still need to pay your Part B premium and plan-specific deductibles, copays and coinsurance.

When can I enroll in an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan?

You can enroll in an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan when you first become eligible for Medicare, during the annual Open Enrollment Period or during a qualifying Special Enrollment Period. If you’re a current Medicare Advantage member, you can also make one change from January 1 to March 31.

It depends on the plan you choose. HMO plans generally require in-network care, while PPO plans allow out-of-network care at a higher cost.

Still have questions?

Is Aetna Medicare Advantage worth it?

An Aetna Medicare Advantage plan is worth it if it covers your doctors and medications. Its 2026 plans include HMO, HMO-POS, PPO and Special Needs options, with at least one $0 premium option in every county it serves. Aetna also includes dental, vision, hearing and SilverSneakers benefits with individual MA plans.

More than 81% of Aetna MA members are in plans rated four stars or higher by CMS, though Aetna is less appealing if you want to use any Medicare doctor nationwide. Like all HMO plans, it also requires in-network care, while PPO plans offer more flexibility, provided you’re willing to pay more for it.

    Reviewed March 12, 2026

I changed to Aetna Medicare Advantage beginning January 2026. I am going back to my old plan beginning April 1st due to the absolute lunacy of this company. By the way, my husband and brother will also leave Aetna due to my issues. My doctor sent in 2 prescriptions January 20th. It took until 2/24 to get one of the two. It was for generic **, **. It has a $0 copay. They continued to say the prescription was for the brand name and I would have to pay close to $700.

My doctor has been my doctor for about 15 years. She has never prescribed **. I contacted her office; they said it was for **, not **. Nevertheless, the doctor still sent it in again. This time they said more information was needed. I spent hours on the phone. They wanted assurance that I was not allergic to it, and my doctor contacted them again to clear this up. That was resolved; then they wanted my credit card information because they were sending the **. They actually said the doctor sent it in a 2nd time for ** not ** and said no generics were allowed. This was simply a lie. Also they would not let me speak with a pharmacist. I am not sure they even have pharmacists in this country.

This was through their CVS Caremark mail order service. I told them to cancel it, that I would go get a written prescription from my doctor and fill it at my local pharmacy. One man from Aetna called to help me. He did finally get my prescription, but the effort was ridiculous! There were other problems with 2 other prescriptions. On one, also a mail order prescription, they actually changed the instructions by saying use every 6 hours instead of every 4 hours in order to give me less of the medicine.

The third prescription I filled at a CVS in a nearby town (I believe Aetna owns CVS), and the pharmacist filled it with the wrong medication. I returned almost 2 weeks later after I needed to use the medicine and noticed it was not correct. They gave me the correct prescription but said I HAD TO PAY AGAIN!!! I have not even seen a doctor as of yet or had any tests.

The plan I am returning to costs more, has higher deductibles, and some of my prescriptions may cost a little more. But I can speak with a pharmacist, and they have not so blatantly lied to me in the past. I only changed to Aetna because it seemed cheaper, but it actually costs more with your time, your health, and your sanity. I really believe the only reason the man called from Aetna to help with my prescriptions is because they knew I still had time to leave their plan if not happy. If I did not leave, I do not believe there would have been any help the rest of the year. I TRULY COULD NOT BELIEVE THEY WOULD JUST LIE TO YOUR FACE! I could understand if they said you are not covered, etc. But to just lie is something I have never experienced.
