When I bought my new house, it was pre-installed rental Rheem-Ruud 50 gal. water heater. After realizing that renting is more expensive than owning it, I replaced it with Rheem 50-gal water heater model PVW50 (SN: 0600J01332) I bought from Home Depot. The installer wrote "date installed: 8/29/2000". After 10 years of problem free usage, the plastic drain faucet started to leak due to constant heat. Simply replacing it with a brass faucet solve the problem leak. Finally, after a total of 25 years I need to replace the tank. I am buying the same Rheem tank water heater.

I just purchased this water heater August 27, and it has been a nightmare. This water heater is leaking down in the well where the relief valve is, so I called for warranty work, because they say first year 100% they pay for inhome service, but not the case. They want to mail the parts and you have to find a plumber and pay up front. That is not what their paperwork says. What an inconvenience. So now I have to undo all the hard work we did and return it to the store, mind you if the store will take it back. Rheem you should do what your warranty claims!! I will never buy another rheems waterheater. I sure wish I had read the reviews before purchase. The last rheem tank I had had the same leak, but I didn't notice it till it was too late and it caused so much damage. For now on my tank will not be behind a wall and will check it daily. Rheem's products and services are horrible.

I purchased a 50 gallon electric hot water heater 2 years ago and now it has stopped working. After a few tests it was determined to be the upper and lower thermostat were not working. I called Rheem and they said they were shipping the part on Fri. 08/29/2025. They shipped it to the wrong address and I called again on Monday asking about the screw up. They apologized and said that they were going to expedite to me the next day. Again it went to a different address than mine. I have been informed that they are resending it and it should arrive today. After visiting the tracking number it says it is being delivered somewhere else. Over a week of dealing with them and having no hot water I was forced to buy a new hot water heater and will seek, reimbursement thru the courts as they are incompetent and unreliable.

ONE star is far too generous .. My condo was built in 2020 and in just five years I’m now on my third Rheem water heater. That level of product failure is completely unacceptable. While my current unit is under warranty until October 2026, the warranty does NOT cover critical costs like labor, trip charges, or removing defective units. I’ve already had to pay these out-of-pocket—expenses that add up quickly: 💵 $428.20 on 10/4/23, 💵 $394.27 on 4/30/25, ➡️ $822.47 total in labor costs. Both replacements were done by a licensed, local plumber.
The second unit lasted only 1.5 years before leaking. A water heater is supposed to last many years—not fail twice in such a short span. This points to serious issues in Rheem’s design, materials, or manufacturing. Even worse, I feel trapped into replacing failed units with more Rheem products simply because of the warranty. I no longer have confidence in this brand, yet switching means absorbing the full cost myself. That is unfair to consumers. Today my case was escalated to a Rheem customer service manager, and the response was essentially: “too bad/too sad.” No resolution, no accountability. 👉 If you’re building, renovating, or replacing a water heater, I urge you: stay away from Rheem. Their products fail far too often, and even with a warranty, the hidden costs fall on the customer.

This company will do anything they can to not have to follow through on their warranty. My old water heater was within warranty period. I got another Rheem and after two months of trying to get reimbursed for the new one I still am not reimbursed. Even after they sent me a letter telling me they would be reimbursing me. Total sham of a company and I wish I went with someone else for my new hot water heater but its already installed.

Purchased Rheem hwh and installed in December 2023. In May 2025 the circuit breaker for the hwh and thermostat had to be replaced and a plumber called to replace lower element in the rheem hwh. The cost of circuit breaker, thermostat and lower element cost over $600, more than the cost of the unit. After several attempts to resolve through rheem, I still have not even been reimbursed for parts even though unit was 16 months old. Stay away from this rheem hwh.

Will never buy another Rheem product. Own a Rheem Hybrid hot water heater in a short-term rental that we (as owners) stay in frequently. The hot water heater has a 10 yr warranty and it is only 6 yrs old. I started getting error codes (A129) via text and email from the unit saying that there was a problem with the hot water heater. Upon discussion with Rheem, they advised that control board was going out and needed to be replaced. They told me it was still under warranty and they would send me one, but after ~3 weeks it was evident that they did not understand their inventory of parts and had no clue if they had the control board. I was told - we have it, then we don't have it, then it will be here in a month, then we have part of the order, etc. While Rheem was trying to get the card sent (another ordeal), we started getting A107 (water leak) and A108 codes and my maintenance guy went to have a look.
The unit essentially caught fire at the control board and burned itself out (see photos attached). Wires were fried but breaker was not thrown, and power was still be fed to the unit. With this new turn of events, the unit was not repairable, and Rheem started discussion on try and replace it but discovered that I purchased the home at yr 5 from the original owner and stated that their warranties do not transfer. Now, I have a 6 yr old Rheem water heater that is supposed to have a 10 yr warranty, that nearly burned my house down - and Rheem customer service has crawled completely out from under their defective product. Just read the Rheem reviews across the internet - the corporate culture is awful, one hand does not know what the other is doing, and they look for any excuse to not stand behind their product. I will never purchase another Rheem product again.

Rheem's customer service is the worst and will never buy or recommend their products to anyone and will advise everyone to reconsider of ever using their products. But if you want to go back and have to work on their water heaters. And it's not just one or two of them, it is every one of their water heaters. And then they want people to go without hot water for up 10 days is just not a good practice for a company to have. That is just unacceptable and they can not expect people to go 10 days with no hot water. And if I could give them 0 stars I would. I have installed a lot of Rheem water heaters and I have had to go back on every one of them. And know that they have pulled what they did today crossed the line. They need to be told that they are the worst.

I would like to comment on your warranty program. I purchased and installed a Rheem consumer-grade HWT less than 6 months ago. Purchased the 6-year parts and labor warranty. Poor financial move. The HWT was manufactured on 11/15/2024. The tank was leaking from the bottom. I contacted Rheem warranty support. Initially was impressed with the support. Within 2 days of my contact, a plumbing company contacted me to schedule the replacement of the failed tank. The plumber, per manufacturer instructions, took the DEFECTIVE HWT to Home Depot for exchange. Home Depot explained that Rheem requires the tank will be depreciated and I must pay about 40% of the cost of a new HWT to obtain a replacement. THIS WAS FOR A DEFECTIVE UNIT.
I called Rheem who do not empower their customer service reps with much authority, even at the supervisor level. I drove to the Home Depot store and spoke with the manager. This is Rheem policy. Because I complained, I was informed they could send me an email to apply for a refund, for the $235.00 I was forced to pay on their less than 1 YEAR OLD FAILED UNIT. I read the small print. If I accepted the refund, I void my 6 year parts and labor warranty. This is the most piss/poor warranty program I have ever encountered. I could almost accept it, with a failure after a year warranty period. NOT AT 6 MONTHS. I will in the future look for another manufacturer of hot water tanks.

Let me preface this by saying I try to only leave positive reviews, but Rheem isn't even listed on Google reviews so here we are on Consumer Affairs. Bought a Rheem Gas Water Heater last March, it's now 15 months later and the Pilot Light went out. I relit it, and then got an error status message that the "Temperature Sensor" was defective.
The Warranty only covers Parts and Labor for 1 year, and Parts for 5 years, tried to contact their customer service line right at 9 am EST when they opened and was transferred twice and they wrote down the wrong error code initially before I corrected them that it was only 5 blinking lights (not the 7 they documented initially), before finally being told I had an hour wait for a technician. Left a call back number and when they did call back they informed me that the model warranty only covered the part replacement, which they first documented as a Gas Control Valve and again I had to clarify it was the Temperature Sensor.
My options for a replacement part were 2-4 Business Day standard shipping or 1-2 Business Day expedited for $30. Since we DO NOT HAVE HOT WATER I opted for the Expedited Shipping even though there's a chance that it takes 2 days which would've been the standard time frame at zero extra cost. The fact that this product which should last a good 8-10 years is defective after a little after a year and that their "good faith" efforts to repair the issue are essentially "welp that sucks we can send the replacement and you can pay to have it installed"call into question the entire integrity of the product and the company.
For peace of mind I would much rather get the whole thing replaced since any future issues will have to be dealt with the same way: 1) Hope I can identify the issue 2) Contact Customer Service 3) Order the replacement Part 4) Pay to have it installed (Labor) but that would require purchasing another Rheem water heater and I gotta tell you that is not my preference the next time around.
I'm sure it's a somewhat fine water heater, but we literally got it replaced last year and the customer service experience left me feeling cold and unappreciated, so I would highly encourage any potential customers to consider reviewing other options before choosing a Rheem because it will more than likely crap out on you right after the 1 year warranty and you will unfortunately not be in hot water.

If you have any other option, please do not choose to purchase a Rheem water heater — you will absolutely regret it. I purchased a brand-new gas model (6G40-36F3) from Home Depot less than two years ago, and it’s already leaking. This unit was bought with a warranty, yet when I contacted Rheem, I was given two disappointing options: return the defective heater to Home Depot and pay the price difference for a replacement — which would restart the warranty — or be reimbursed the difference and continue under the original warranty timeline. This is unacceptable.
If I’m receiving a new unit, it should come with a new warranty period. I shouldn’t be penalized because their product failed prematurely. It’s incredibly frustrating to spend hard-earned money on something that doesn’t last, only to be met with a warranty policy that offers no real protection or peace of mind. At this point, the warranty feels useless if I’m expected to keep paying out of pocket for their defective products. It’s extremely disappointing that such expensive units are not built to last.

We had our Rheem 60 gallon hot water tank for the last 6-years and 1 month. We purchased it through Reliance about a year into the lease and not long after the warranty expired - Reliance failed to register the heater upon installation - the tank started leaking. We contacted Rheem and they indicated that based on where the water was leaking from there was no remedy and the tank would need to be replaced. Despite having the tank for just over 6 years, Rheem indicated that since the tank was not registered, they went by the manufactured date which was 5 months before it was installed. In talking with numerous departments for over an hour, a replacement/compensation wouldn't be granted. Not necessarily surprised by their decision but just disappointed and would not recommend their product to friends or family nor buy a product produced by the company.

Tanks are supposed to last a decade if well maintained not one and half years. This was a product error and the manufacturer should cover the cost of the installation. Rheem should stand by their products just like car dealerships do when there is a recall. They do not make people pay for those repairs that are factory error.

We purchased a new home in 2022. It had a Rheem gas water heater installed by the builder. In May of 2025 we came home from a vacation to no hot water. I called our plumber who came out and determined that the control module was defective. Since it was still under warranty, I called Rheem and explained the problem and asked for a replacement. Their response was that we needed to run further diagnostics to determine if it was in fact the problem, basically implying that the plumber wasn't competent to evaluate the problem. We decided to just go ahead and buy the part from Rheem ourselves and they blocked the order (made by our plumber), insisting that we run the diagnostics. Our experience with Rheem tankless has been nothing short of frustrating and unprofessional. Despite owning a property with a Rheem water heater that is only one year old, we encountered multiple issues beginning about 7 weeks ago. Rheem's initial response was to send us a 45-page troubleshooting document to handle it ourselves. When our attempts failed, they referred us to a plumbing company directory on their website.
After five visits from a Rheem-recommended plumbing company and countless hours spent troubleshooting over the phone with Rheem, the solution they provided was incomplete and ineffective. We have spent $472 in labor so far, only to find out that crucial parts were missing from Rheem's delivery. Despite numerous attempts to escalate the issue to a supervisor, we were met with complete indifference.
We have also been trying to enforce the warranty on the equipment, but as of today, Rheem has not agreed to honor it. Overall, our experience with Rheem has been unacceptable and their customer service leaves much to be desired. We expected better from a company of their reputation and will be seeking alternative solutions for our property's heating needs in the future.

I purchased a Rheem tank type water heater from the HVAC and plumbing contractors I have used for 41 years. I was told professional suppliers provided top quality Rheem water heaters, unlike the lower grade typically sold at Home Depot and other similar stores. Those stores use cheaper products with the same name and model numbers but without the quality and testing of those sold through professional suppliers. This made sense to me since I know from experience the crummy Rheem water heaters sold by Home Depot and Home Depot's dreadful service. So the "high quality" Rheem was installed for about $2,500 three years ago.
In April of 2024, it ceased to heat water. Bad burner assembly so it was repaired by the service company I used at no charge. Sadly, however, the service company said they no longer sold or recommended Rheem water heaters due to their decline in quality and service. They should have told me this three years ago. Now exactly one year after the bad burner assembly failed and was replaced, the water heater has ceased to function. After many attempts relight the pilot on Friday evening after being out of town for a week, I paid for overtime out of regular hour service to get this repaired quickly as we had clothes to wash, food to prepare, dishes to wash, and showers to take.
The repairman could not make the pilot light. He tried calling the parts supplier for Rheem which we determined would not be available until Monday and MAYBE they could ship the part by Tuesday or Wednesday. I do not recommend Rheem water heaters. There are plenty of other quality manufacturers. I do not recommend buying appliances from any big box stores unless you are happy to have an inferior product branded to look like the high quality you could get from a professional supply house..

The reason I bought another brand is because of all the problems I've had with Rheem quality. I can understand rheem not wanting to give me a full cash refund. I would have been happy with a prorated refund, but it's just not worth it to replace with a Rheem. Labor cost about as much as the unit and chances are the next Rheem would only last 3-5 years. On January 29, 2025 I bought a Rheem 50 gal gas water heater from the Home Depot store, West Hartford, CT that was delivered to my home by two pro plumbers. Upon removal of the heater out of the box I noticed several dents on the heater's upper area and aside, also a few deep depressions on one side at the bottom of the unit. After all necessary connections with the water supply pipes the heater wouldn't start.
Upon close inspection the plumbers noticed that one of the wires coming from inside bottom of the unit connecting with the the electronic regulator device was cut in two. Since there was no fixing, the heater was returned to Home Depot and the second unit was installed and found in proper working condition. I had to pay the plumbers $250 once for the delivery, installation and removal of the first Rheem heater and the second time same amount of $250, total of $500. I had to replace my old GE 50 gal water heater since after 14 years of use it started to leak, otherwise I wouldn't have done this.
In conclusion, Rheem factory simply doesn't have any quality control over such items as the broken wire was visible and obviously due to this reason the heater couldn't work. Also, there was no owner's manual included in the box. I had no choice but buying Rheem brand that is the only one sold by my nearby Home Depot store. In closing, I would qualify the Rheem water heater as a piece of junk wondering how long it will last. Not recommended. I suggest to buy any other brand but no Rheem.

I wish I had read the reviews before buying the Rheem 80 Gallon Platinum Hybrid water heater. The service is terrible. Nine days after installing the alarm goes off because some wires burned down. I called the support number for Rheem, which they open only at 8 am CST. I explained the problem and they asked me to do several things until finally they asked me to open a plate where I found burned cotton covering the wires which were burned too. I sent them pictures which showed very clearly the damage.
I was going to call my plumber and they said no because it has to be someone authorized which should reach me within 4 hours. By now is noon and none had called me. I kept calling them few times and every time they gave the run around until finally they got me someone who showed up by almost 2pm. He told them the unit needs to be replaced and he needs authorization to take the unit to home Depot where I ordered the unit from. It took several hours.
By the time he got the authorization was too late to take the unit to the store and he had to take the next day. At the store they said that to do a warranty exchange it will take several days to get a brand unit so it was better if I bought another unit to be delivered sooner. That was another 48 hours. Still don't have water heater and hopefully it will arrive tomorrow. With 10 years of warranty, and extended warranty and my CC warranty I was hoping to get service quicker. So in summary: Terrible product with terrible service.

Last Friday at 2:45 pm PST I contacted Rheem tech support to order a replacement part for our water heater's control valve (combination Gas Control Replacement Kit (NG)), part number SP 20867D (Rheem) or WV8860C1015 (Honeywell). Our water heater had been installed on December 19, 2022. The part was covered under warranty, but not for service (2 year warranty). I was instructed to order this part by our gas company SDG&E as they detected a leak in the controller. I was told by tech support and their shipping department that it would not ship until Monday. It would ship standard (2 to 4 days), but I could pay to expedite.
Since the gas company turned off all gas to our house, we would be without heating or hot water for a minimum of 6 days. Tech support can not take your credit card information for expediting, so they couldn't place an order to expedite. They put in an order for standard shipment. On Monday I called to ship the item expedited. Though I called at 10 am and had ordered the part without expedition, I was told they could not ship it until Tuesday. So Tuesday they shipped it FedEx Priority Overnight. But FedEx dropped the ball and it sat in Greensboro for nearly 24 hours. I called FedEx and was able to finally get it going again.
Lesson learned - don't use Rheem tech support or shipping! My wife, who had just fallen days before and fractured her shoulder had to endure extreme hardship because of Rheem. I will refer all of my friends to other brands. I invested many repeat calls to Rheem to get the part. Recommendation, have a plumber identify the problem and then go online to order the part if you live on the West Coast.

This is a horrible product. My water heater is 5 years old, under warranty, and leaking gas from the thermostat. Oh Rheem will send the part, you just don't know when. Rheem is all about money. You can't buy replacement parts locally. They have to be purchased from the manufacturer. I was told for $30 I could have it expedited, but they can't guarantee when you will get it. I chose not to because I had already spent money to have a service man come out. I will still have to pay to have it installed when it finally comes.
I'm considering calling my local news channel investigator reporter to look into this horrible product. It's cold outside and fixing to be freezing weather with no hot water. I will never purchase from Rheem again, and from what I have read on the reviews, I might as well just go ahead and replace my water heater with one that won't break down within days after I finally get the part and have it replaced. I hope no senior citizen should have to go through cold weather with no hot water. I give Rheem a minus zero for their faulty product. I'll never purchase another.

In 2020 I had my old water heater replaced with a Rheem "Smart" water heater, electrical 50 gallons. Within a few days of the new water being installed it started leaking and the Rheem Smart water heater has an auto turnoff if a leak is detected. After several calls to Rheem support, and their mailing me parts that they walked me through replacing (which they required) they finally "authorized" a replacement. This required Rheem scheduling plumbers to do the work and my having to accompany the plumbers to Home Depot to turn in the old water heater and get the replacement. First time fully covered by the Home Depot water heater warranty as it was less than a month. It was a two-week process working with Rheem and Home Depot to get the replacement water heater in place.
Two years later the replacement Rheem starts leaking with the EcoNet app providing a water leak alert. Again the "Smart" water heater shuts off the hot water, and once again I had to reach out to Rheem warranty support and go through the entire process of Rheem doing the initial troubleshooting, scheduling a plumber, I have to go with the Rheem plumbers to Home Depot and go through the Home Depot warranty replacement process. Home Depot reduces the amount they cover for a replace by each month you have the water heater, so the remaining coverage was enough for me to get a standard Rheem water heater as I did not want to go through the experience of a third leaking.
The Rheem plumbers then install the new electric standard Rheem water heater over a period of a few hours. Here is it less than three years after the last replacement was put in place and I now have pieces of rubber flowing to my kitchen sink faucet and blocking the flow of water. I also note the pipes the Rheem plumbers installed that provide connection between the Rheem water heater, the flexible cables (installed by the Rheem plumbers) and the house lines, are now rusting out. When I called out a local plumbing company (well rated by local residents and A+ BBB rating) they examined the water heater, connections, under sink water connections, and the sink faucet. Per the plumbers, they have seen this issue a few times and it is related to the flexible metal water cable connecting the water heater to the house lines.
Per the plumbers, the flexible water cables should not be used as they have a rubber lining that starts deteriorating, breaking into pieces and moving into the house water pipes, and block/reduce water flow. The plumbers also pointed out the non-flexible pipes the Rheem plumbers used in installing the water heater also should not be used because they will start rusting out. In fact, I have received a class action lawsuit notice for the water heater connectors that were used.
Now I am going to have an almost $2,000 charge to replace the water heater, expansion tank, pipes, and replace the water shut off valves under the kitchen sink, clean out the rubber pieces that are in the kitchen sink water lines, also the rubber pieces sitting in front of the kitchen sink water faucet cartridge, and hopefully never have to deal with Rheem, or their products, again. By the time this entire nightmare is resolved, I'll have had a period of two months where either water pressure to my kitchen sink, or hot water availability, was impacted.

The overflow brass connection is at an angle - we decided NOT to try to turn it perfectly vertical. The overflow tube now is at an angle - luckily towards the back wall.
We really are starting to question the quality of Rheem. We used Rheem as we thought it was relatively good quality. Why would your tank fail at 3 1/2 years (it got probably less than normal use for two 90 year olds). Then they had to pay $174 price difference for basically just less than 4-year-old tank!! Hopefully, this one won't have any other problems like the overflow tube.

When the part arrived I had my licensed plumber install the valve (at a cost of $500 to me) on 8/16/24. He immediately said the part did not look like a new part, he could still smell gas after installation and again suggested I call the gas company.
Round two--same as Round one. They could smell gas, tested, gas is leaking from replacement part and gas is turned off again. Called Rheem again, they will send another part but no reimbursement to me for cost of first installation--their defective part--or cost of the second one--still not shipped. Inferior hot water heater from a company that does not stand behind their product. Will not recommend Rheem to any of the 240 members in my HOA or development or to anyone that I know.

Complete trash company with complete trash products. Rheem is hollow shell of its former self, now peddling garbage to the public. Their products are cheap scams that fall apart quickly. Bought a house with a less than 3-year old water heater which is already started leaking. Figure it'll be no problem since the warranty on the product is 7 years, but turns out, it's non transferable. A non-transferable warranty on a water heater when a home is sold is just absolute nonsense and way for this dumpster fire of a company to not be forced to stand by their worthless products. Do yourself a favor and stay FAR AWAY from Rheem. Horrible company, horrible products, horrible practices. Absolutely useless from the top of the company to products they squeeze out their back end.

I purchased a Rheem Performance Platinum 50 Water Heater (Model No: XG50T12HN38FU1) June 2019. July 2022 the water heater began malfunctioning with various error codes; the gas control valve, the chamber sensor, and the thermocouple were subsequently replaced. Most recently (August 2024), the Gas Control or Valve Failure error code returned. I called Rheem customer service, a representative sent me a Rheem Technical Document regarding checking the thermal release device (TRD). It is a distinct possibility I may have to purchase another water heater to replace the malfunctioning Rheem Performance Platinum 50. I do not know if this is usual (or unusual) for Rheem Residential Water Heaters, but my next water heater will not be made by Rheem.

We have a Rheem gas water heater that is less than 5 years old, still under warranty. A month ago, the gas suddenly stopped and fire went out. On the advice of our plumbing technician, Rheem sent a replacement part, a gas control valve. The plumber replaced the old one and lit the fire. A week later, the gas suddenly stopped and fire went out. I phoned Rheem Customer Service at (800) 432-8373 and spoke to a Rheem Customer Service rep. I neglected to write down her name, but believe it started with a J. When I asked her to listen to me she hung up on me.
I phoned back and spoke to another rep, Donna, who listened and referred me to a supervisor, Jessica. Jessica explained that there are only 3 components that can fail: the gas control valve; the pilot assembly; or the thermal release device. On the advice of a second plumbing technician, Rheem sent via overnight a pilot assembly, and he installed it the next day. He re-lit the water heater and it looked fine. Less than 24 hours later, the fire went out.
Again, I phoned Rheem customer service and spoke with Victoria. I asked to speak with a supervisor, but she insisted that I tell her what was going on. I did. Finally, she said she had to send me to a supervisor and put me in the queue. I waited 30 minutes on hold before the supervisor, Chris, picked up. I told him about the long wait and he just made excuses. Finally, however, he again is sending out another gas control valve AND another pilot assembly. Supposedly here tomorrow. We'll see. I asked about replacing the entire heater since it is under warranty. He said I'd have to have some other company return the unit since they don't do that. No labor is covered. This company's products might be just ok, but their customer service is some of the worst I've ever seen.

I bought a 30 gallon lowboy Rheem short height water heater from Home Depot. 489 The threaded pipe coming out of the top for the cold water to come in leaked on the first one I bought. It's leaking from where it's threaded into the tank at the factory. You can see it bubbling and leaking out in the short video. Yes I bled the air out properly. The next two videos is the second tank they gave me to replace it - both the hot and cold pipe in the top and the pressure release valve in the center all leaked from where they were threaded in to the tank. THE VIDEOS OF IT LEAKING IS WHAT PROVED TO THE STORE IT WAS JUNK BOTH TIMES- WELL WORTH IT TO DO. So keep in mind I'm working for a rental property company and the first existing tank that went bad was 30 inches high. This Rheem was 39 inches high which meant altering and redoing the water lines to be 9 inches higher.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE HEIGHT OF YOUR TANK SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO REDO PLUMBING. So time wasted doing this. Then drain down the tank of all the water in it. Disconnect it and haul back to store. Waste an hour arguing to get a replacement. Drive back and re install. Another junk tank. Drain down. Disconnect. Haul back to store. Go to a pro plumbing supply house ao brand 780. This one is 30 inches high. Redo the water lines back to 30 inches tall. Look like a complete moron to your boss by this time. Because he refuses to think two of the tanks in a row could be bad- had to be me screwing up. (I've put in a million tanks in my 58 years FYI)
Their quality control is absolutely non existent and to be honest - not surprising. Reason being the box stores dictate to the manufacturer what they want to pay for an item. Say this tank - home d wants to pay 200 for it. The tank costs the manufacturer 300 to make a good quality tank with good quality parts - guess what? They change the quality of the parts to cheapen them to make it meet the price point home d wants to pay.
Same with appliances - worst place to buy an appliance is HD or Lowes. All junk quality parts inside them. Whirlpool owns like 15 or 20 other brands. Less expensive brands - less quality parts. Perfect example at home D is Bosch bulldog hammer drill. Junk. The Bosch bulldog extreme - is the real deal German made in Germany - not cheapened drill and 100 bucks more. Look up reviews on both and you'll see. Go to a pro supply house - **the warranty doesn't mean damn thing if they don't stand behind it. **It's just a marketing lie to get you to buy junk. A ten year warranty on junk they paid 20 bucks to make is all it is.
The long way to be absolutely sure-- Best way is connect cold water line coming into tank. Let it fill tank with valve barely cracked open and air escaping through hot water pipe coming out of tank til water filling it reaches the hot water pipe. Shut the valve. You have to watch especially when the water gets close to the bottom of the pipe for hot water on the tank. This will take a good bit of time and you watching it fill the entire time. This way it's full of water and the air is all escaped. Then open all your faucets and connect hot water pipe. Barely crack cold water coming in valve open. All faucets open to Let air escape from piping in the house then water will reach faucets they will hiss or whistle for a good while as air escapes from pipes in the house- then once water reaches faucets let it run a few minutes so any trapped air will escape.
You'll see water stutter several times as pockets of trapped air come out. Shut faucets off once it flows without stuttering for a few minutes. Now flip breaker on to heat it. Do not turn the breaker on until all the air is out and it's totally full of water. you'll burn the elements up if it isn't full of water and they don't cover burnt up elements from turning on power before the water is full inside the tank. They call it dry fire burned elements - meaning they were heated without the tank being full of water and all air escaped out of it. It voids the tank warranty. Hope this helps people trying to do their own tank to save a few bucks. Pay for a plumbing supply house price and get the real deal good quality products.

We purchased a Rheem gas water heater in November 2023 because of reviews and their 10 year warranty. 3 times in 3.5 years is unacceptable. This last time our water heater broke it is now not under labor warranty so we have to pay for all the labor too. When asked if they could do something since it shows we have had problems with this heater, they flatly refused to do anything. Dishwasher, washer, dryer, fridge, HVACs (we have two), our pool appliances, and over 150 lighting devices, locks, security, etc are all smart. We travel a lot and prefer to be able to seamlessly control all aspects of our home from near and far. The Rheem system was easy to install. The Home Depot installer couldn't get it to connect to our smart home network. After a week of many phone calls, Rheem was able to help someone from HD come back and reconnect. The system ran well for a few months until a power outage. It's now been two months, many hours of phone calls between us and Rheem with no success. We have experienced Rheem employees who have very clear issues with POC, while we did meet one Rheem tech who seemed deeply focused to get our system back online, but he failed.
Their software is written in China, and Rheem doesn't control that piece of their business, so Rheem can't remotely log into our sandbox network and connect the water heater. It's been very frustrating to experience Rheem's lack of concern for their customers. If we could take this big chunk of garbage back to HD, we would, but it's been 8 months since it was installed. Avoid Rheem. Tech support is terrible (and some there have issues with POC). Product is terrible. Regardless of iPhone, Samsung, or Google Pixel Pro 6, no connection could be made. My experience with the Rheem tankless water heater has been nothing short of a nightmare. From the moment it was installed, it has been nothing but trouble. Despite assurances of efficiency and reliability, this appliance has failed to deliver on every front, leaving me boiling with frustration instead of enjoying a simple hot shower. First and foremost, the unit has not worked since installation. It's been four agonizing weeks of boiling water on the stove just to manage basic tasks like washing dishes or taking a shower. Plumbers have made four futile attempts to rectify the situation, each time spending hours on the phone with Rheem's technical support.
The level of incompetence and inconsistency in Rheem's support system is mind-boggling. Every time a different part is deemed necessary to fix the problem, yet none of them have succeeded. Promises of expedited shipping for these allegedly crucial parts turned out to be empty, as they arrived via standard ground shipping, prolonging our misery. The sheer amount of time wasted on the phone waiting for customer service, tech support, parts, and shipping is unacceptable. It's as if Rheem is more interested in giving customers the runaround than actually solving their issues. This experience has left me deeply disillusioned with Rheem as a brand. Their inability to address or fix the issues with their product speaks volumes about their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Save yourself the headache and steer clear of Rheem tankless water.

On Friday I bought a new Rheem 40 Gallon Gas Water Heater. It would not light. I first called Rheem to see if they could help. All the girl said was that it SEEMS to be the Gas Control Unit. It would cost me out of pocket about $250 for repair man to come out and fix it is possible. Rheem would pay $175 max if I sent the bill to them. THIS IS ON A BRAND NEW WATER HEATER. On Saturday I called Home Depot and they said bring the Heater back to exchange it. I took out the new one and dropped it off at home depot. They were very good about it. I took home the New One again and installed it. I was shocked to find out that it had the exact same problem (Pilot light will not stay lit and burner will not ignite) after Rheem Tech support checked it out. So now I am waiting for a part from Rheem to arrive. I have Home Depot ready to send repair man to put it in for me. RHEEM SUCKS.... Do not buy Rheem.

This has been a horrible experience, ongoing. I bought a water heater in september from rheems. The gas valve has broken. Since it is under warranty I called for a new part. They said it would ship the same day if I expedited ($30.00)... so I did. And it didn't ship. Now I have to wait until tuesday or wednesday for it to arrive. so I asked if I could source the part myself :( and they will not accept a return on this part if I do that, and they will not reimburse me if I find the part sooner than it can get here??? How is that customer service? Oh I am so very unhappy with this whole process. I feel this is very unfriendly and unhelpful and inconvenient! I will not recommend rheems to anyone. :( Sad.

After 3 hours and several people they finally gave us an exchange for the heater. If they are going to sell the tanks then they at least should have parts for them, otherwise don't screw your customers out of the warranty. Apparently this is quite common with this type of Hot water heater but no one tells you that or how to prevent it.

Had one of their tankless hot water heaters installed by a plumber in 2017, it was supposed to be good to -40 degrees, sent in pictures for warranty and was told no warranty, looks like it froze. Then we contacted a plumber to see if they could fix it and when they went looking for parts, they were told they could not get the part needed nor a larger piece that had the part needed and that the unit needed it to be replaced! It was a plastic elbow! Watch out for these guys, they sell product, don't cover warranty and then do not have parts. They have a pretty good money grab going on.

I had a brand new, 50-gallon, gas-fired water heater installed at the beginning of 2022. In 2023 it started leaking and I had to pay a contractor to fix it. In early 2024 the gas valve went out. I was told by my contractor that I had to order the part from Rheem and that Rheem would not ship parts to contractors. What a terrible policy. I have been without hot water for 5 days now waiting for the replacement part. I have been a home inspector for over 30 years and always thought Rheem water heaters were okay but now I will warn all new home buyers about the pitfalls of Rheem water heaters. I personally will NEVER buy another Rheem water heater.

We just purchased our house in June 2023. The previous owner of the house installed a new water heater in Dec 2021. We thought their water heater would be under warranty since it’s 1.5 years old however their warranty does not extend to the new owner. Issue #1: their warranty does not remain intact for a number of years but by the purchaser of the product - I have never seen any product warranty work in this way. Issue #2. There’s a huge quality issue with this water heater. It leaks and our hot water stinks. Since there is no warranty, we’ll have to pay for the part and labor on this 1.5 year old piece of junk.
Issue #3: When I attempted to call Rheem, their customer service number was virtually impossible to find. Issue #4. When I found the customer service number, they had me on hold for 40 minutes and then when the person picked up, the call got disconnected with no callback. I had to call them again and wait another 15 mins to speak with another person. Just an absolutely ridiculous company. I have no idea how they’re still in business. Would not have purchased from them if we had the choice. Will replace with Noritz or Navien asap.

When trying to connect with customer service to replace the unit, had to stay on hold for over 45 min waiting for someone to speak with me, and then got disconnected because they closed. The worst experience I ever faced is with Rheem company. Don't buy their product ever, poor quality and pricy. I wish there is a ZERO rating.

Why do they make such a poor design and do nothing to fix it?? Do not buy from them.

My advice is to pay the extra money and get a better unit with a longer warranty.

I just bought a newly refurbished home that came with a brand new Rheem water heater. The unit was manufactured two years ago and has been in use for three months. Last week it crapped out on us, so I called the customer support number. I was told parts are still covered under warranty, but not labor so I'd have to install the parts myself. A cheap pilot replacement kit was mailed out, and I watched a bunch of YouTube videos so I could fix it. Even this I find silly, since a trained professional would be able to quickly troubleshoot and remedy the issue instead of untrained homeowners. We are dealing with gas after all, and this should be left to trained professionals and not random homeowners.
The part arrives and we successfully replace the pilot kit, but surprise surprise that apparently wasn't the issue. I called the support line again only to be told that since we purchased the home the warranty won't be covered and we're SOL. The water heater was essentially purchased just for us and used a grand total of 3 months before breaking. I do not recommend Rheem appliances and certainly won't buy anything from them again. I see many freezing cold showers in my future.

I then postpone appointment to get a new one installed, and go through the time and legwork to get the 6 year old Invoice. Then after a lengthy call and transfer to a supervisor, they tell me I can't use the invoice THEY told me to get! They wasted my time and scheduled appointment. Customer support informed me that they were gonna send out a new circuit board and a triac, which they did and I received.
However, during replacement, one of the bolts would not back out and I could tell it was cross threaded. I informed them about it, and their response was to get a broken "screw" (bolt) extractor. I told them I was not paying for tools to work on something that I should not have to be working on nor am I qualified. Being concerned that my home might burn down. I informed them that I wanted a new unit. Their response was to call a licensed electrician and that they would not provide a new unit replacement. Way to go Rheem, America at its best.

We purchased a home in April of 2021. Very nice home, well-built. One half of our home has a very large tank water heater. The other side of the house has a 2018 Rheem Prestige 11Gal Natural Gas Tankless Hot Water Heater. It is their top-of-the-line residential tankless hot water heater from 2018. The previous owner had set up a system with a pump and vinegar to keep it perfectly clean. I had all the same stuff the pump and bucket and hoses. Being the lazy person that I am, I just had a company come and flush it and clean the filter. I set it up with a very reputable plumber as a maintenance item, along with the other water heater. Two days after the last maintenance, we started getting an error leak code. I had the plumber come and he couldn't find the leak and we are talking a drip an hour type of leak so not easy to find.
We called other plumbers on the list of Rheem people and 3 plumbers later and 1100 dollars in automatic charges for diagnosis. The diagnosis is that it has a leak and we have replaced two parts and it is now shooting other codes. We just bought another Rheem from Home Depot yesterday, we purchased a new Rheem. Not because I trust their brand, No, I have very little faith. I purchased the same brand with the new and improved Platinum Series. It was 1700.00+ at Home Depot. I purchased it because the installation is generally 2-3k dollars. By using the similar product the installation should be much easier. I have a Rheem tankless water heater that failed after 2 years. It started with an E5 error code (flow rate) and I also found a leak in a solder joint while going through their diagnosis paperwork. To sum it up, they refused to replace it because of the calcium build up from the leak. They said that they could tell that I had not been doing the standard maintenance. I had performed the standard maintenance about 3 months prior and there was not a leak at that time. This is ridiculous, just another loophole to avoid replacing a faulty product. I think everyone that buys Rheem products knows that they are ok at best and believes that they will at least last out the warranty and if not they could get a replacement. In January 2020 I had a licensed plumber from a reputable local company install a RHEEM 50 gallon electric hot water heater. This was to replace the existing heater (different brand) which was leaking all over the floor in my mechanical room. Everything has been great UNTIL 6-5-23 when the RHEEM began leaking not only from the bottom, but from several places on the top as well. I immediately turned off the water valve and grabbed several towels to mop up the water. The plumbing company has been notified but I do not have an appointment as of today.
They are telling me that the thermostat is set too high, but when I used a candy thermometer (calibrated to 350F) to test the water temp, it read 120F after holding it under the water stream for 3 minutes. No one has touched the unit since it was installed so if it is truly set too high, the plumber did it. The previous heater was also electric and my life experience has been only with gas water heaters which have been outstanding. At this point it looks like another electric unit is the only option I have, but I surely don't want another RHEEM. Hopefully the 6 year warranty will be honored.

There was also water pooling at the top of unit. The same plumber came out from Four Seasons Plumbing and inspected to be sure it was not his work. We took pictures and documented and he showed me the cold water nipple threading was forced in the top of hot water heater during the manufacturing process. I sent all documentation and pics to Rheem the same day.
The customer service rep for Rheem, Glynith, was nice and stated they were in the wrong, but would only replace hwh and cover $750 of the $1666.70 labor charges. I was hesitant in just getting another hwh from Home Depot in that I might be damaged again. Brain offered to replace with their Rheem which did not have auto shut off valve nor alarm and was more expensive and not as long of warranty. Four Seasons did raise warranty to match with no extra charges, although I had to pay for them coming out a second to uninstall and re-install the new hwh that they had in stock in their warehouse.
Rheem should stand behind the unit that was damaged and have included labor charges incurred by defective hwh. I've lost all the labor charges because I picked out defective hwh from Home Depot that was manufactured by Rheem. Such a pity! These BIG COMPANIES do not care about the products they sell or represent and I am out all this money.

Five minutes later, I asked my plumber to call them back and overnight the pump to us, but although only FIVE (5) minutes had passed, they explained that they couldn’t change the order and we would just have to wait for the part to arrive. The bureaucracy was so intransigent that once an order had been placed there was no going back. Why they don’t automatically overnight their parts, I will never know. Do they think hot water (their business) is a luxury, not a necessity? I have now been without hot water for six days and still no part. Inexcusable. My dishes are covered in an oily film from washing them in cold water. I bathe using pots of water from the stove. My clothes are washed in only cold water.
Through the past year and a half (the lifespan, it would seem, of this mediocre product), we have run out of water constantly, although they claim that you will never run out of hot water — the whole point of their product. We can’t shower if the dishwasher is on. Likewise, the washer and dryer. Likewise, if someone is also showering. I had the choice by plumber to drain the unit leaving me with no hot water until replaced. Or risking the unit rupturing. I could not risk above while waiting for gift card from Home Depot. I had my contractor, plumber supply me with a hot water heater and install the unit. Above was installed on 2/10/23 between 2-5 p.m.
I reached out to Rheem warranty on 2/13/2023 and spoke with Nadia supervisor re: above and some compensation. I was denied above due to not returning damaged Rheem product to Home Depot and purchasing another Rheem product from Home Depot. I had been told by my Home Depot warranty that I did not need to save the damaged unit since their plumber assessed the unit and said it is unrepairable and needs to be replaced. My last words for a company, Rheem that says they stand by their products did nothing for me and my unit had a warranty until 2/13/2025. Buyer beware of Rheem products & warranty!

If there are negative reviews, I will not hesitate in giving that for Rheem. When my Rheem hot water tank broke down for the third time during the first year (bought thru Home Depot), I had to call them to ship for some critical parts. Since Rheem does not stock either with Home Depot or local plumber, they have to ship them via FedEx. In my latest breakdown scenario, I asked them to overnight the parts by paying expediting charges. Supposed to be next day shipping turned out to be 5 days while we didn't have hot water in winter months.
Overall with all the haggling with Rheem, we suffered having no hot water for almost four weeks in winter season. I have to admit that all the agents were quite nice, but every time I called, I had to hold for almost an hour. There are no direct lines to any department within Rheem. Each time I had to go thru a central number and wait to be connected. Then the process of transferring within the departments starts and each time more waiting. Very frustrating experience. I have a feeling that it is purposely designed that way so that the customers will get frustrated and will hang up. NEVER EVER BUY RHEEM Products. No help from Home Depot either even though it was purchased thru them.

I would have given Rheem a five star rating if they even made a reasonable effort in providing customer support. The product is a very good one but I submitted multiple customer response forms and received nothing. If they are going to sell through retail channels then they need to support the customers who purchase their products. I purchased my tankless WH through Home Depot thinking that this would be a good channel for support. My advice to anybody looking to purchase a Rheem product is that you will be on your own.

Unit installed eighteen months ago, mfg 28Dec2020. If I had followed Rheem instructions I still would not have hot water after 10 days because they refuse to replace defective units. They only arrange for redesigned parts to be delivered so plumber can install at my cost. The issue is Rheem wants the customer to get so frustrated by delaying the fix that the only real choice is to throw out the old and buy new from a reputable company. They in effect pass on their responsibility for paying for and fixing product defects. They told me they have no idea how they could possibly track defective units since they are sold to wholesalers. Zero accountability. They deserve a class action lawsuit. I’m surprised this haven’t happened. Let’s all be environmentally responsible guys. This is a travesty! Why are they in business?

I bought a Rheem electric tankless water heater RETX-24 from a reseller as part of a radiant floor heating system. It started making noise shortly after installation which grew progressively worse as time went on, and it eventually just quit working in any capacity. I called Rheem and they sent me a troubleshooting document which turned out to be for the wrong model. After calling them back, they sent me the correct procedure, which involved disconnecting the plumbing and accessing the inlet side of the heater. Fortunately, I had the tools and ability to do this myself or I would have had to hire a plumber. I discovered the flow meter had worn a hole in the side of the cheap plastic housing it was in, stalling it out so the heater was not detecting flow.
After verifying that it was still under warranty, they said they would ship me out a new part via FEDEX and it would take five business days. I requested expedited shipping since this is how we heat our house. They told me it would cost about $125 to ship a half ounce part. I pleaded my case and asked if there wasn't another way to ship it (like USPS express mail) and they refused. They said they only shipped FEDEX and would not budge on the cost. It's now been delayed because of Christmas or weather (not sure which) but we've been without hot water for 8 days during the coldest week of the winter. So beware...If you buy Rheem, they may send you a new part if you do the work yourself, but don't expect to have good customer service or expedited shipping unless you want to pay a fortune for it.

Purchased Rheem Gladiator 50 gallon electric hot water heater from Home Depot. Actually wanted to purchase the Rheem hot water heater with heat pump but went with the Gladiator. Home Depot subs installation to private contractor. The contractor, I believe, is a multi state company who sets up your installation with local plumbers in your area that are part of their network. That company charged me almost $1000 for delivery and installation. My total bill was 1785. The plumber installed a line incorrectly and I told him to fix it just before he was ready to leave. The EcoNet system I found difficult to set up and lost connection to my server on a regular basis.
Since day 1, I got about 2 1/2 minutes of hot water when in the shower. I’ve had this unit 2 months. I want it to work. I thought Rheem was a good company. I’ve called Rheem concerning my problems with this unit. They have no technician for my area to check my unit. The breakers for this unit tripped and we had cold water. I tried to reset the breakers, they would not reset. I had to call an emergency service electrician he said the installation wiring was incorrect. Last night alarm from heater said service needed. Bought a brand new water heater from Home Depot (Rheem) that never really worked correctly. After about 5 mo I called Rheem who then sent out a local plumbing co to replace the part they said was defective. After replacing part twice water heater still did not work properly so they decided to replace it. And this is where the problems started. Was told to take it back to home depot to get a replacement, Rheem had the local plumbing work with me so we could take the water heater back to home depot, they warned me I would be responsible for any difference in price (which I thought was a little weird to say) as well as if parts were not up to code beforehand.
When we got to home depot they would not take it back until (cause their policy is 90 days) I told them this is what Rheem said we were to do. Then they wanted to pro-rate the water heater instead of doing an even swap even though the water heater was not even 6mos. old. They wanted me to pay an additional 160.00 plus tax to get a replacement water heater. Yes Rheem manufacturing warranty is 5 years but home depot warranty is only 90 days. What a scam.
Both Rheem and Home Depot both know these water heaters are a piece of junk, local plumbing companies know Rheem heaters are junk and we the consumer are being scammed by them both to shell out more money for something that does not work properly in the first place. After I stood my ground and had a manager come up front Home Depot finally did and even swap with me, but I will probably have to go thru this all over again in 6 mos to a year. Why there is not a class action suit against the both of them is beyond me.

Last week, in Nov 2022, we woke up to no hot water. Called the HVAC company who came out and diagnosed a defective gas valve, which was covered under warranty. They said they were replacing so many of them that Rheem had shipped them a large supply because this was becoming a known defect in this unit. However, Rheem does not reimburse labor for replacing their defective part so we are out another $350. None of the other less expensive hot water heaters we have had ever broke down this soon, and we will never be purchasing another Rheem product.

Purchased a hot water heater from one of their plumbing distributors about a year and half ago. Had a licensed plumber come and install, wasn't even installed for two weeks and was not heating water. Called and was told they were aware they had faulty parts and would send out a replacement overnight. A week later it came, lucky the plumber walked through my tenant at the time how to install and got it working after almost two weeks and no hot water. Had to pay a plumber, new hot water heater and tenants for lack of water to bathe, wash dishes etc. Fast forward we took house back and now have NO hot water for two days and now being told that they have only known since Jan 2022 about the faulty parts, this is **. You have record. You sent me the same part before and now sending another one to be told they don't overnight anymore and it might be here by end of week, it is Monday as I write this.
Had a plumber come by to see if he could do anything in the meantime. He said he has been replacing these parts for Rheem since 2017 and they have known about this for a long time and now are sending out steel replacement instead of plastic. He said his company and many more will NOT carry or install these because of the way that Rheem has handled this and known about this for a VERY long time and yes they are replacing the parts but only paying a very small amount for labor and most plumbers charge a trip charge now to come out plus and hourly labor rate.
So you are in the negative NO matter what or how you try and handle not to mention you miss work, school etc for not being able to bathe for over a week if not more if a plumber is not available!! It is time Rheem took responsibility, why haven't they sent out a replacement to me since I have been in their system as having faulty equipment they sold in 2020??? So disgusted by their lack of concern or care for something that is SO needed in a home to function daily!!

By reading other reviews it seems this might be a known problem. The good news is that the part is under warranty. The really bad news is that according to the AC dealer, the distributor does not have the replacement part and they do not know when it will be available. Even with the part under warranty, it will cost me about $900 just to add coolant, not counting labor. It is 92 degrees outside and very humid as it always the case in FL this time of the year, and humidity will eventually damage everything inside the house. This isn't a pair of shoes that I can box up and return to Nike. I don't have the skills to safely unhook a water heater by myself, and I don't own a truck or a van that can carry a water heater. Why Rheem wouldn't choose to send a verified partner to verify the issue, and provide a replacement, I can't understand. They sold a defective product that broke within its warranty, not me.
