I purchased a total of 13 Milgard windows in June of 2006. I love them for functionality and have had little issues here and there of window track slip and a couple of latches needing replacing. In the last year however, I have had 2 windows in my bedroom and 1 in the bathroom mysteriously crack and break apart. As soon as I get 1 fixed, it seems another breaks. I asked a rep at 1(800) Milgard if anyone else had these issues or if there was a recall. She stated there are no issues similar to mine and no recalls.
I owned a business for several years and have had items that were defective or worked incorrectly and I had to man up to fix or replace with an item that was superior and not defective. My family and I love our new windows but could do without the constant broken glass and explaining when we have company over about Milgard's mysteriously breaking glass that they claim to have no idea about. Word of mouth is important these days and in life for business - from a concerned customer point of view.

I purchased many windows and a sliding glass door from Milgard. The frame around the sliding glass door is defective. When you walk outside from the inside, the frame piece will break due to poor quality. This piece is thin and anyone who walks on it will break it. We now have water leaking into our home whenever it rains or when we wash off the patio. I have contacted Milgard regarding this problem and they have said that this is not covered by their lifetime warranty on their product. This company will not stand behind the inferior product that they manufacture.

This junk is exported as well. A neighbor had Milgard windows installed; and he works in the trades, so I thought he would know what to buy. And of course, what's shown in the showroom is not what you get. I've had nothing but problems at my home in Langley, British Columbia. The cheap plastic strips won't stay stuck on the window. (That's what you get when you have a finishing method that looks like it came from a dollar store - double-sided tape, come on.) The bedroom window had debris in it. So, the Milgard guy (not the local company that installed them) came with a replacement which, after my time was wasted for the install, also had debris in it; so again, a third window was brought in and more of my time wasted.
When I ask about the plastic not adhering, I get that's an install issue; not a manufacturing issue. The crummy old aluminum windows that were original to my 1991 home didn't leak in the two years I had it before making the mistake of buying Milgard; but my family room window leaked the first rain (June 23, 2012). Of course there was no one available on a Saturday. The company came out and redid the goop and all new plastic strips (which were lifting within days.) The guy said basically, this is the west coast and it rains (as if I was to expect that new windows would not keep the rain out; funny how the old aluminum ones did not.)
Since July, my bathroom window won't shut (the lock won't close). The company was notified in July and I've heard nothing. I've asked about a refund; nothing but silence from the company. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I preface every correspondence with the term 'garbage'. I feel very much cheated. I thought I was making an investment in my home. PS: the neighbor who bought Milgard sold his home shortly after, and I met the new neighbor who showed me his plastic peeling problems.

Milgard window screens - 3 years ago, I fixed my house and bought Milgard windows. I paid a tone of money like $24,000.00 for all my house windows thinking it was a sturdy item, but it turned out to be a garbage. 95% of the door screens are popping out and today, I called Milgard and they said the warranty is one year. Why do they mislead the customer?

I had Milgard windows installed in 1995 - white vinyl, the kind that they chop holes in the stucco. The whole house is in the CA Earthquake-ville and is on a slope. The house still settles on a little clay earth. All the windows are fine. The stucco job was hard to match, but it’s fine. After one bad storm, I had some leakage on a large fixed trapezoid. The installer came and caulked it. I think that part of the decision should be to use a window company, not a contractor. I had good service from them. I think subcontracting windows might be important. It is a big job and maybe you need a company that just does that. Originally, they did tinker some with locks, etc. My slider screens are kind of - but I’m not sure that years of kids slamming them have caused the problems. I have done a lot of remodeling and never have good luck unless the workmanship is reliable.

We built our house about 7 years ago and bought Milgard windows through Lowe’s. We were sold the lifetime warranty offered through Milgard. We have recently had our 4th window spontaneously crack. They replaced for free the first window. They claim that they will only replace the subsequent ones if it is a manufacturer's defect, but they don't cover glass. I paid out of pocket for the last two, but I am not sure what to do about this last one. Milgard quoted me $368 for the repair. I don't mind paying a couple of hundred dollars to fix my window, but there is obviously something wrong that they spontaneously crack for no apparent reason. It looks like others have posted similar experiences. Milgard will not admit any defects and still hasn't offered me a reasonable explanation why they are spontaneously cracking for no reason. I don't trust their warranty department to help in the matter. What can be done? How many more windows and thousands of dollars will this cost to fix?

I would also advise people to take some of these "complaints" with a grain of salt. My home was built in 1999 and has Milgard windows. Last month, April 2012, I noticed one of the windows had a broken seal. I called Milgard and furnished them with the window type and dimensions. They scheduled a service call for today, May 4, 2012, between 3:30-5:30. The repairman arrived at 3:15 and had the window replaced, at no charge, by 3:30. Friendly, fast, and competent service. My windows are 13 years old and this was the first problem I've experienced and Milgard handled it professionally. I don't know what more anyone could ask.

We purchased 33 Milgard windows for our home - big house and lots of windows. In less than 3 months, we had broken parts (the little plastic safety tabs), leaky windows, and windows that wouldn't open and close properly. Twice, their reps have been out to look at the problem and replace the cheap plastic tabs, but nothing else has been done in the six months we have been complaining to them. We can't even get screens, though we requested them, too! We have been told that someone will get back to us, but it never happens. I have left multiple messages for Amy **, the rep who we were told would get back to us, but she has failed to return any of my calls. Lesson learned: you might save a few bucks up front versus buying Anderson or some other better brand, but you will pay for it in the long run. Leaky windows cause dry wall and insulation problems and sometimes mold. Stay away from Milgard windows!

I purchased all-new Milgard windows and a Milgard patio door in late 2006. The windows are all fine; however, within 2 years, the bottom track on the patio door cracked and broke. The door slides easily in cold weather and is difficult to open and close in hot weather. When I contacted Milgard, they stated that vinyl windows and doors expand in heat and contract when cold. That did not explain why the windows slide just fine regardless of weather.
They also told me that the bottom track of the patio door is not covered under warranty, and I would have to pay for a new one. I guess the most used part of their patio doors (the bottom track) has a life span of less than 2 years. My last patio door was junk, and the track lasted 30 years. I have not replaced the track yet, as most of my money was spent for the remodel. I can assure you I would never again buy a Milgard product again. Their lifetime guarantee is based on a very short life.

My clients had a sale on their home and when the buyer's inspector came through, found that 15 windows in the house had failed. This home was built in 2002 and is almost 10 years old. There are even failed seals on the north side. Both myself and my clients left messages on the Milgard website regarding warranties and replacement, and neither has heard back. Finally, a couple other calls made and messages left, my client talked to someone who told her the windows were not under warranty. There are very confusing and inconsistent warranty facts on the website. I have colleagues who have had clients that the customer service has been good, but now this is not the case. It appears the windows that have failed the most are the ones that are under warranty. My clients are being stuck with a several thousand dollar bill for a product that obviously has serious problems and a company who would rather not care for their mistakes but instead, hide behind recorded messages and voicemails. This is a true disappointment.

Milgard Essence Casement Window Design is Poor: We purchased Milgard's new Essence line since our entire house is stained wood and we wanted it to match. We also heard great things about Milgard. Most of our windows are casement. We ordered them without knowing the design puts the screen all the way on the inside of the window jam. We planned to do an inside mount of our window coverings. In this way you can see all the wood trim we have stained around the window. We can't do this with the design that is different than any other window we are familiar with.
I contacted Milgard and got a response explaining this is a result of the structural design of the window requiring the screen to be mounted so far inside. And that an architect/designer should address covering like drapes or box shutters. I felt the given reason for structural integrity was an excuse as the screen is fastened to a place, so how does it play into structure? But I could be wrong. At this point, my wife feels we wasted our money if we are supposed to cover all the wood work and windows we spent so much on. I feel Milgard manufactured a poor product and then had an excuse for us. If we could return them, we would.

I am a bit confused about all of these complaints and I would suggest to anyone reading them to beware. Window salesmen are down and dirty and will use these kinds of tactics to knock the competition in order to make the sale. I have Milgard Windows in my home and love them. They were installed in 2006. My neighbor recently received quotes for new windows from Renewal by Andersen, Champion Windows and Milgard. Milgard gave her the best price and she called them because she likes my windows. When she told one of the other salesmen she was getting a quote from Milgard they sent her to this site. If you were sent here by a Milgard competitor, beware. Anyone can post anything negative about the competition and pretend to be an unhappy consumer.

Our house was built in 2004. The warranty is 10 years for the new buyer in 2011, however the warranty was voided June 2005 after the house was built . Upon investigation of their warranty matrix on their website, they have a designed program to limit ,warranty when they see that a particular window type or classification are not working, or performing well. None of this info is included in the warranty card given to the customer. No opportunity was given to us to read the small print. There are many vinyl window companies out there to choose from. I suggest you do just that.

We purchased Milgard windows in spring 2007 for the house we are building. The house is almost complete but is not occupied. A couple of months ago, we noticed that one of the frosted glass windows in one of the bathrooms had broken (inside pane only). No one had been working in that bathroom or had even been in it. Then about a month ago, we noticed that another frosted pane window in another bathroom had broken, Again, inside pane and no one had been near it. So far none of the other windows have broken, but there is obviously a defect in the windows since this happened to two different frosted glass windows in the same house. My husband called the vendor and they referred us to Milgard. The person my husband spoke to said that since it was the inside pane that broke, they will fix it. They are scheduled in the near future. We'll see what happens. She also told him that if the outside pane had broken, the warranty would not have covered it.

I had all my home windows replaced with Milgard dual pane in Sept. 2005. In 2010, I noticed one of the bathroom windows had a leak under it. Fixed the damage and re-chalked, but it still leaked. In Oct 2011, I had an installer from New Pane come out to examine it. He assured me it was not leaking and was fine. On Friday, Jan 6, the inside pane of that same window blew out. A large chunk of glass hit the toilet seat before landing on the floor. The outside pane is intact and so is the screen. There is a weird pinkish hue running through the bottom part of the outside glass and a pink circle in the middle.
A few years back, my bedroom window started getting moisture between the panes when it got cold. There appears to be a defect in these windows, the glass and/or the sealant. I am concerned it is just a matter of time before my other windows blow up and out. This is a dangerous problem that should be addressed and corrected before someone gets seriously injured.

On 1/6/2012, Milgard low-E dual pane window, interior pane on lower double-hung window which flanks a large picture window, shattered in the middle of the night for no apparent reason. The same exact thing happened almost three years ago to the day, on the exterior lower pane window flanking the other side of my picture window. At that time, Milgard informed me that their 'lifetime warranty' would not cover the shattered window. I hope that they now realize that this is a serious quality problem (see previous complaints) and will offer to replace the window as advertised. I'm not holding my breath; but even if they do honor their lifetime warranty, I will never purchase another Milgard product.

The contractor installed 8 different Milgard windows in 2006. As of 6/1/2011 one exploded - outside pane in the garage. As of 12/24/2011, another exploded in my bedroom - inside pane. I was 6 feet away from it and the glass (size of 1/8th to 1/16) was scattered around the room. Both windows were double pane (3x2).
The 2nd window blew about 8:30 in the evening. Will the other windows also start to explode? Would not recommend this product as severe damage to persons could be involved due to explosions of the glass. The company has no idea of why!

I had Milgard vinyl windows installed in March 2005 and have been very pleased up until the morning of December 25, 2011. My wife and I heard a loud pop and clattering almost like a bunch of pot lids banging together. We could not figure it out until the next day my wife went into the laundry room only to discover that the inner pane of our double-paned window had shattered.
There is nothing that came into contact with the window; the door is closed to that room. And the outer pane is fully intact. I called the installer in regards to the full lifetime warranty but was informed that the glass itself was not covered. I am waiting on a response from Milgard Windows.

Their windows are junk. What a scam! They leak air, and the headers actually have fallen out on 5 separate occasions, and the moisture on the frames and glass is going to ruin the wood underneath. I would never recommend this company for windows. I sure hope Premier stops selling them, and I would be willing to participate in a law suit, with all of their unsatisfied customers. How about a class action law suit?

We had Milgard wood clad fiberglass windows installed in our home. The casement windows worked okay, but the windows that slide have a serious leaking problem. When we stand next to the windows, especially the sliding glass door, the wind literally blows through onto our feet. We had the installer come out three times and they could not fix the problem. We then contacted Milgard directly who sent a man out to check for potential warranty problems. He looked at the windows and said he would get back to me.
Milgard called me back and said that the windows were built to spec. They offered to install a weather stripping for $300.00 but that the windows would not slide properly if we chose this route. The man who came out to check our windows made a comment that is probably close to the truth. He said the dirty little secret is that these windows leak. We will have to replace the windows and eat thousands of dollars. Not happy.

Still the original homeowner. Milgard recently replaced all of our windows after 10 years. No problem.
I'm finding that the quality of the replacements isn't as good as the original. The sun shows a lot of tiny pitting in between the panes. Also, this is the 4th time in two months)that I've washed these "new" windows using Sprayway, then vinegar/water, then straight water, extremely clean rags, then newspapers, paper towels, and finally squeegees and they still turn smoky within a few days. We recently replaced all the windows in our house with Milgard windows, only to discover several months later that all of the tempered windows had scratches on them. Milgard blamed our window washer, but our window washer was using approved materials. And since only the tempered windows were scratched (and not the untempered ones), it seems like it was a defect in the manufacturing of the windows. We had 6 windows replaces with the intent of doing the other 4 later. A contractor installed the windows but we removed and replaced the outside trim.
The windows are Montecito glider style, vinyl.
The window frames are slightly bowed, making some of the windows questionable about air leaks. The glass had either glue or some other non-water soluble material on the glass. On one window, it appears to be a scratch rather than glue.
The thing that sent me to this website is the silicon glob on a web used to open the window. There were quite a few places on the vinyl that seemed to be either glue or marred. All in all, I don't feel like the quality warrants the higher price. We will have to see how they perform.
