    There's a shortage of generators, and there happened to be one, so we grabbed it. The Kohler generator is expensive, but we had an outage that lasted for four hours, and it worked good. I like it, and I'd tell people to go ahead and buy Kohler.

    The rep was really good. He went over everything and worked me up a price. But it was a little slow and I had to wait six months for the generator to come in. Also, the emergency shutoff switch was bad from the installation. We bypassed it to make sure. They didn't replace it yet through because we're trying a couple of things to determine whether it's 100% that that's the issue. Also, it wasn't worth it for what I had to pay them to install. Other than that, the price was fair and comparable.

    I live in Kentucky. We have outages pretty often here. I got a big family so I didn't wanna have a situation where we didn't have power. I contacted a few different places. They spoke very highly of Kohler and told me all the differences between it and other systems, like Honeywell or Generac. And just made me feel really good about the quality of that system versus the other ones. That was why I went ahead and went with them. So far, I've got no complaints. Everything's been good. The power went out several times and we haven't had anything but a flicker of a light and that was about it.

    I had a Kohler generator that was installed many years ago and they never said anything about servicing it. When it blew up, I had an outfit from Catskill come over. They were a generator dealer and they said it would have to be programmed by Kohler. So I got all with KOHLER and the first part they were gonna replace was 800 bucks. So rather than goofing around with something, I decided to buy a new one. They installed the new generator last summer and then serviced it this summer.

    I have a Kohler 26 KW for 12 years and love it. My power is back on within 10 seconds (usually about 7 seconds). I have an electrician perform preventive maintenance every 2 years and more often if I have a long run (several days). PM including cleaning, filters, synthetic oil change, tune up, parts and labor (about an hour) costs $90 to $100 depending on parts needed. When it was 10 or 11 years old, I had the starting battery replaced which cost me about $80 more -- Very little to pay for peace of mind. I should mention that the battery tested a little low during PM. It is on a trickle charge continuously and has never failed in service even though it has started many times when temperatures ranged from below 0 to above 100 degrees.

    It self tests once per week and has served me well for all outages from a few minutes to a few hours to more than 6 days. It is loaded less than 60% as tested with actual load test and running whole house (over 4000 square feet) including the following turned on for the load test: All lights, air conditioner, clothes dryer, stove, oven, and several TVs.

    I’ve had this generator since mid 2020 however it only has 54 use hrs on it. Tomorrow will be the 3rd service call for the same problem (I don’t think it’s the technician). I think I got a “lemon generator.“ The board has been replaced, but still the same issue “low voltage” F1,F2”. I have always had Generac generators in the past (3) for my homes and decided to go with a KOHLER this time because of good reviews, and a “stated” better quality. I’m honestly ready to rip it out, and put in a Generac! Sad part is I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a commercial diesel generator for my business complex, and decided to put that on hold until this issue is resolved. Hopefully someone steps in and takes some charge of my situation. I sincerely hate giving bad reviews, and will update as soon as someone steps in and fixes my issue. Sincerely Larsen **.

    Generator has been reliable since installation Nov 2021. Rear spark plug is hard to service. OnCue Plus app is functional and a necessity to remotely know generator status. Generator has gone offline a few times and process to bring back online a little time consuming. Maybe this could be made easier.

    Overall our Kohler Generator has been very reliable including running through several power outages, including a couple of 2+day ones. The generator switched on as expected, and the quality (voltage and frequency) of the power was good under varying loads. The only drawback of this particular system is the poor integration with home automation systems (Home Assistant and HomeKit in my case). Notifications of power switchover are delivered more than 10 minutes after generator start, meaning you can't reliably automate turning off non-essential loads.

    I think it is unfortunate that you require a Kohler certified installer to be used to get your extra warranty offer. Every such dealer was at least $1000 higher on the installation cost only than the TOTALLY QUALIFIED contractor I used. I could buy extended warranty cheaper.     Seems that the generator that was installed was manufactured on a Friday and the assembly person did not pay attention. During the generator's weekly check, it shut down due to high RPMs. Could not manually restart and needed a tech. to look at. What was found was total negligence on Kohler. The carburetor bolts to the manifold had never been torqued, causing the carburetor to back up and allow enough gap for to governor to stick wide open. Why was this a major concern, the generator did not even have 40 hours on it!

    I have owned two (2) 20KW standby Kohler generators over the past ten (10) years and currently have one at my residence.     Generator has worked for me in the past. But have the time it loses connection so I get no status on the app. Have to call my installer to schedule him to come and reset it. Then works again for a month or two. I'm not the only one. Common problem I know of with Kohler and OnCue. Wish I knew that before I chose Kohler. Useless when I don't know if the generator is on standby and ready. If it's completed its weekly test fine.

    We have the 20kw model with automatic load switching technology, fired by propane. Hurricane Ian tested it well several years ago. It ran five consecutive days, resting occasionally only during oil-level checks. We ran everything in the house all the time. Fabulous. Finding the right contractor is incredibly important.     We have always wanted a standby generator as the power failures is common in our area. We have tried portable generators, but they don't cut it. After our Kohler generator was installed, we had an 9 hour outage in April 2023 for 9 hours. We have two large free freezers full of beef plus smaller fridges. When the generator kicked in it rather whole house, not only the appliances but some medical equipment. We will never be without our generator.

    We had a Kohler 20 KV generator installed in May of 2021 by Voyageur Electric at our home in Cable Wisconsin. Since its installation it has never worked. The generator controller wasn’t charging the battery and needed to be replaced. The motherboard crashed and needed to be replaced. The OnCue wasn’t working and parts needed to be replaced. The air intake was bad and needed to be replaced. Both engine gaskets failed and the engine block cracked. It took several months for my contractor to hear back from Kohler on what they would do with the engine issue. Instead of doing the right thing and replacing the whole unit, they decided to replace the engine which I am still waiting for. I’m certain this unit is a lemon from the factory and will never work correctly. I understand that things can happen but the lack of timely response from Kohler has been extremely disappointing.

    We bought this product largely based on Kohler’s reputation. That now seems to be a big mistake. We have had several power outages and no generator to help us. To be clear, our contractor has done everything he can do and has been great to work with. This is a Kohler problem. They should be ashamed of the abysmal product they put out and colossal failure their customer service and warranty side has been.

    Your dealer (Generator Service) had to change the governor on my 20 kw generator with only 2.4 hours. They keep sending me a bill for this warranty work telling me I owe it because Koehler will not pay the warranty claim. The unit was less than 1 year old and only had 2.4 hrs. Because it would not run during exercise. I also have a 30 kw that will not run under load it displays a message that say: engine speed low shutdown. This unit is approximately 3 yrs old and has 150 hrs. I bought these unit because of several problems I had with my previous Generac generator. Koehler is not proving to be any better!!

    The company that KOHLER used to install my generator was pretty freaking good. The delivery went fast, too. Within a couple weeks, I had a generator. It was rather expensive, but I could either take it or leave it. It cost me $12,000 for my old house but I would recommend KOHLER. If somebody asked me if they should use KOHLER or Generac, I would tell them I had no problems with KOHLER.

    I bought and had an authorized dealer install a Kohler 12RESV standby home generator June 29, 2022. The authorized dealer performed the yearly maintenance July 27, 2023 (only 37.3 hours on generator). On Friday, 28 July 2023 (one day after the yearly maintenance was performed) at approximately 12:30 PM I left my home to visit my children and Grandchildren in another state. I returned to my home on Sunday, 30 July 2023 at 2:45 AM and the generator was running. I was unpacking my suitcase to prepare for bed and the lights went out. The generator had shut down. I obtained a flashlight to go outside to check the generator and saw where oil was laying on the concrete pad. I opened the lid to the generator to check where the oil had come from and could see where oil had blown out and covered the entire inside and the message on the control panel stated it had shut down due to low oil pressure.

    I called the dealer that night and they arrived around 9:00 AM. They added less than 1 quart of oil (which meant the generator had approximately 1/2 quart of oil still in it). They then attempted to start the generator and it would not start. They then thoroughly checked out the machine for app. 2 hrs. and discovered it had locked up. I then started my portable generator to restore power on Sunday, which does require one to be at home, when electric power goes out, and fill it with gasoline until power comes back on from the electric company --- the precise reason I bought a standby home generator so I did not have to be at home.

    They filed a warranty claim with Kohler and it was denied per their message as follows: "Claim denied due to extended run time. Per the operation manual, generator should be stopped and checked every 8 hours. There was a 35-hour if he files a run with no stops to check. Claim denied for negligent operation." The generator only has a total of 77.3 hours on it, so it was still basically new. The precise reason I bought the standby backup generator is due to the fact that if I am at work, on vacation, away from home on business, or visiting family is that I would have electricity for my home to protect the frozen foods in my freezers and refrigerators, and to run my gas furnace (it requires electric to operate) in the winter. To be required to check it every 8 hours is impossible unless you are at home the entire day every day. One never knows when electric power is going down here in rural WV.

    I discovered that Generac and Briggs and Stratton standby home generators have a recommended 24 hour run time (3 times what Kohler requires) that one should stop the unit and check the oil. I spent $9,000.00 on the Kohler unit including transfer switch and authorized dealer installation and now I have to buy a new unit. The authorized dealer informed me that they could not believe that Kohler had denied the warranty claim, because Generac and Briggs and Stratton (which they are also an authorized dealer), have honored their warranty under similar circumstances. When buying a standby home generator no one ever discusses that a continuous runtime can void the warranty (nor does Kohler state this, or even highlight it either).

    I will now buy either a Generac or Briggs and Stratton home standby generator, since the authorized dealer has informed me that they have never had a warranty issue with either one. In fact they informed me that Kohler has been difficult for them to deal with on warranty issues. I want others to be aware about continuous run time on standby generators and that Kohler will deny a warranty claim if the the 8 hour continuous runtime is violated without stopping the machine and checking it out.     Courteous, prompt tech, named George, appeared knowledgeable. His work took 30 minutes. I am surprised this cost over $300. This generator was installed by NH Generator Installers, and they handled the first annual service visit described above. The generator has run fine ever since I reported the generator was not delivering full power, the first time we used it for an extended period (several hours). We knew there was problem because our lights were dim and we heard the generator coughing. It turned out that the carburetor was loose, not having been fully fastened to the motor at the factory, and had become more loose with virbration from that first extended running. Bill **, at NH Generator Installers, fixed that problem for us the next day. This was some months after the initial installation, but before the annual checkup.

    Ever since, as I said, the generator has run well, including a multi-day power outage last winter when, cumulatively, we ran the generator about 22 hours (shutting off at night). I topped up but did not overfill the oil, with Mobil 1 pure synthetic, 5W30, midway through that outrage. As it happens, the generator has been running about five hours now, from a current outage, due to a windstorm taking down power lines this afternoon.

    The system is set up so that if it senses the main power out to your house because there's power from your provider, it gives it about 20 seconds because sometimes, the power just flashes. It doesn't go all the way out from your provider. So, it makes sure that the power is out. Then, the generator will kick on automatically to supply energy to the house. The Kohler generator is not bulky and comes in its own container. The electrical contractor installed it for me. So it's fine. There's a company called Palco which is a contractor that does preventive maintenance on the generator. They're a little problematic and they don't like to answer calls and schedule appointments for preventive maintenance. But they are who Kohler specifies as one of their distributors and service distributors. Kohler may wanna kick their service companies in the backside to be a little bit more customer-centric when it comes to Kohler products.

    The generator is amazing. As soon as the power goes down, it kicks in immediately and there's no interruption of service. Sometimes we don't even know that the power has been down other than sometimes for a split second, the clock doesn't zero out. It's totally automatic, and it doesn't take any knowledge or skill. I have two sick people on oxygen and pressure mattresses and they can't be moved. The nurse aids might need to reboot the router, but other than that, nobody has to do anything. I don't live in the home, but there are caregivers and I have the Kohler app on my phone. The generator tests itself every week, so it knows that it's ready. I can see when it tests itself, and I can see during a storm if the generator has gone on. It's been exceeding my expectations.

    When my Kohler generator was installed, I pointed the installers on their way and my experience with them was wonderful. I didn't have to really deal with anything. I got the propane generator, so I have a propane tank because my backup furnace is propane as well. I mainly use wood-burning furnace in the winter and when my electric service goes down, it's not even three seconds and my Kohler generator starts. I have it outside of my bedroom and I know when it kicks on because of having the weekly checking thing that comes on every Sunday at 10:00 AM. We have a lot of storms and stuff in our area and we lose power a lot because I'm on a ridge. So, the idea of knowing that I'm not going to lose power to the fact that I'm going to lose things in my freezer or my refrigerator gives me peace of mind.     The installers came out and did all the service connections. They did the electrical and the gas first, then they brought the generator and hooked that up, and they walked me through its features, how to use it and how to set it up. It was pain-free. I like the standby on the generator. It comes on automatically when the power goes out, so it's worry-free. I don't have to go outside in the snow or the rain. The generator runs on natural gas, so I don't have to refill it ever. I had it connected to the gas line in my home, so when the generator comes on, it just runs off of the gas line. It goes continuously, and I was told the generator would run for days before it shuts off. I'm very satisfied with my Kohler generator. It's worked every time we've lost power and it's been working great.

    My power went out during the cold weather over the holidays 22/23 and the generator didn't turn on. Turns out that they don't do cold weather starts so I had to buy an additional $1500 worth of a cold weather starter. Nobody told me this when I bought the generator. If the power goes out the generator should turn on, but not yours. It sucks. Then last week we had another outage and I was out of town. I got back and all my clocks and timers were 6 hours off. I had the Hiller repair people out and they said it had a dead battery which they then replaced. This is a $15000 piece of junk. I just had the generator serviced less than 2 months ago and you'd think it would work. I would not recommend Kohler or Hiller to anyone in Nashville.

    The company where I did the purchase for my Kohler generator was excellent. They took care of everything. I just called them up and they gave me the price and how long the install would be. The generator seems good, so far. It's simple. That was what we wanted. I didn't want to be screwing around with having to haul out a diesel generator every time the power went out and making sure it had gas. The Kohler generator does what I want it to do. The only tiny complaint I have is - and it's not entirely their fault - my utility room is quite small, and they put the generator panel quite close to a waterline. It's not against code but it's not the best of practices. I had to move a waterline after the fact.

    A few years back we had an ice storm that knocked out power for over a week, and the use of a portable generator was very restrictive of what could be powered.     We're in VERY rural Northern Wisconsin and the power goes out pretty regularly. The generator itself (14k @ 2 years old and 55 hours of service) has never failed to perform. It turns on/off as needed and I've yet to overpower it with any regular household demand. Very happy with the generator. Random thoughts... OnCue Plus is kind of useless. It's free so I can't complain too much. You really should be able to turn the generator off remotely. Having the real-time draw as a % of max included in the app would be helpful.

    Things nobody tells you before buying a Kohler generator... The Kohler installation requirements to maintain warranty compliance are absurdly vague. Kohler dealers will tell you that if a non-Kohler installer does the initial startup that the warranty will be void. Through multiple phone calls, Kohler customer service both echoed and contradicted the dealer assertion of a voided warranty. Annual inspection/maintenance, again the requirements with regard to who can/should do this are vague. I've checked with all of the Kohler techs within 100 miles of me and the prices are between $1500 and $500 for a maintenance visit. At 55 hours the only maintenance required is to check the oil. In two weeks, a Kohler tech will be here to check the oil. At that time, I will have spent $1000 to have the oil checked twice. ABSURD, these vagaries have put me in a hostage situation with the Kohler warranty. Super unhappy with everything but the product.

    The generator would run for a while then shut down because of a high rpm alert. Originally diagnosed as improper gas line installation. The company redid the gas line. Same problem. Finally diagnosed as a “bad stepper motor”. They put a used stepper motor in until the new 1 arrived. The unit has only completed the 20 minute exercise with no problem but have not had an actual outage since replacement.

    We've had our Kohler generator for a year and so far, it's done everything we expected. When we've had power outages, it's come on, and we’ve had no problem with continuing the comfort in our home. So, during winter, there's been no issue with electricity or being able to cook or whatever we needed to do while the power was out. It's been great. We don't have to go outside and start it, or you don't have to get it out of the garage and put fuel in it or pull it out of the garage and run extension cords. When there’s a break in the power, it kicks on and life continues as normal.

    When there was an upgrade, Kohler sent a technician out and took care of that. So we have had no problems. The quality has been good. We've had some hail storms and the thing is still in one piece. So, I'm grateful that the materials have held up. My brother came out and looked at it although he lives 400 miles away and he's going to put in a KOHLER at his house also. So, it's done very well for us. We recommend it to anybody that would wanna not have their life interrupted by a power outage and winter storm.

    We were saving up for a Generac, another brand, and when I talked to a friend of mine who's the electrician that did the work, he found problems getting parts for the Generac generators. So, he switched his preference to KOHLER. He recommended that we purchase it because there was no issue getting parts. The electrician got the generator and installed everything. We told him what we wanted and he came out and looked at the appliances we run and our freezers. He took our monthly bills for the year. We gave him our electrical bills and what we typically use. He figured out our highest months and what our peaks are. He figured out what we needed from KOHLER. We went with them and we're glad we did. It's been a good generator for us. I would tell friends to go with this one and I’d recommend the electrician we had.

    We needed something a little bigger than we thought but that’s okay because I would rather have enough power than not enough power. And when the generator’s running, I'm not turning on a lot of things. But I still have internet and the TV, and I can still make a pot of coffee. I don't have to worry about my freezers and the hot water heater is still running. There are a lot of new homes going up in the area where I live and with that, between the state inspectors and the electricians, they are installing a ton of backup generators. Our particular electrician has installed multiples of the KOHLER generator so, it's popular in our area.

    Somebody put the KOHLER generator up for auction at a charity event and it was installation, service, the whole works. I was looking at KOHLER and Generac, but when I saw that one and I got a good price on it because only one person bid on it, I bought it. The full installation with everything included that I got, they listed it as like $9,500, and I paid 6,500. It was just for ease of mind because power goes out and we've had it happen before. It kicks on. Every Sunday morning, it runs for 30 minutes. If you're outside, you can hear it and it sounds almost like a lawn mower, but not as loud. If you have the means to do it, you should do it.

    I had a residential 20kw generator installed 2 years ago. The dealer, Prostar Electric has been excellent however we have had an ongoing issue of losing the internet connection so that I am not advised by email if the generator is running. This is an important part of owning a generator - knowing that if you are not home the power is out and the generator is running. The dealer has loaded software several times, it works for a few days and then loses connection again. I'm not sure that in good conscience I could recommend the Kohler generator because of this issue.

After calling my electrician I find out that it doesn’t have a fail safe for that which I find ridiculous. You buy a generator so when the power does go out you are protected.     I can only attest to the quality of the equipment and dependability as being superb. I ordered and installed this generator myself because I am an electrical technician for 40 years in both industrial and residential settings. As for Kohler installation, I'm sure they have competent installers but I chose to use my own talents. The 20 kw generator has performed flawlessly through several power outages. Some lasting as long as 8-10 hours. I have approx 1400 sq ft home and I never had to use load shedding. I kept hot water, A/C or heat at all times. I run mine off propane due to my proximity to any towns and natural gas is unlikely. This unit does consume around 4 gallons per hour of use at full load. But that is pretty much in line with other brans this size. I am well pleased in the past 3 years of my unit. KOHLER make a quality product and is well thought out with its accessories.

    My only complaint is the OnCue service. This is free with Generac but I had to pay $265 for the wireless adapter and got royally screwed out of $405 to install it…So $670 for what is free with Generac. When connecting me to OnCue the installer wouldn’t let me see anything so if I switch routers they’ll charge another $405 for a service charge to put it back on line. There was a month where OnCue wouldn’t connect to the server and it was issues at Kohler but we never were notified the problem was at Kohler.

    The Kohler generator we bought looks good and does what we bought it to do. However, some changes would make it more reliable. After one year of ownership and less than 50 hours of use, the generator started popping and running poorly. The tech said a mouse had chewed through a coil pack wire. Certainly these generators could be made more mouse-tight, given they are for outdoor use and remain outdoors and dormant most of their life. The tech suggested mothballs. I suggest a screened in undercarriage that prevents mice from entering in the first place.

    My Kohler generator can run my whole house. It'll run my welder in my shop, my air conditioning, my furnace and freezers. I just wish I would've had more time with the guy that sold it to me. Because I don't know much about the generator and he just talked to me briefly about it. Then, when it went bad on me one time and it was under warranty, I had to wait quite a while for him to come over.     I proudly own a Skaggs Zero Turn mower, a Miller Bobcat Welding Machine, both with a Kohler gasoline engines. I therefore bought a whole house Kohler Generator 20RCA that runs on propane. Several months ago an electrical storm knocked out our power. The Kohler Generator kicked-on and ran but there was no power to the house. Come to find out the lightning shorted out the circuit board on the Kohler Generator. The electrical company that installed said that Kohler is aware of this problem, but Kohler has no fix for it. After a large bill a new circuit board was installed but this could happen again. I don't see the need in having a whole house generator if the system is not protected from lightning strikes. I will not be recommending this whole house generator.

    I love Kohler. In a home that I've built on the North Shore, I put in a Generac generator only because Kohler prices were out of site. When Kohler decided to get their act down and come down to where they were affordable, I put a 20 kW here in my home where I live now. However, they should make it a little quieter. I find the Kohler generator is noisier than the Generac and they're both 3,600 RPM machines and both of them with 20 kWs that I had. In comparison, they were the same machine except the manufacturer was different.

    I am disappointed at the origination, administration and eligible participants in Kohler's rebate programs. I have always loved Kohler and used them exclusively for all my indoor needs in my kitchen and bathroom. So when I considered a back up generator, I immediately went to Kohler for an estimate.

    1. I ignored Generac's 7 year free warranty and said Kohler was worth it. Besides Kohler promised a $250 rebate. Well, imagine my surprise when my dealer told me he didn't participate in rebates. Shouldn't a large respectable company establish the same standards for all dealers and make sure they adhere to them so people like me don't feel scammed by the false advertising?

    2. I mentioned that I recommended a neighbor. I ordered immediately but he wasn't as trusting and waited to examine a few more companies. So when he ordered in August he got 10 years warranty and up to $750 rebate. I ordered in April and got crap. Why didn't you advertise that a new rebate was coming? I could've waited.

To explain: I have worked most of my life in an Industrial maintenance environment. My father was a Master Electrician and I spent years working with him. So, right from the get-go, Kohler would not put the warranty in service until I had this thing checked out by some dealer. Could not get anyone to look at this unit because they won't make the big bucks. I finally found a dealer who charge me $300.00 to come out and that issue was resolved.

    Here's a few things that I just don't know what Kohler thinking is. 1. No lights gauges anything on the outside of the generator case. You don't have any idea if it's going to start, or is it dead in the water. I put in a 12 volt gauge/light and a separate 120 volt indicator light. Now anytime I walk past this unit I know the battery is OK and the heater is working. 2. The lid on the aluminum case is too small/redesigned. Water dripping off the lid finds it's way into the case and drips on the battery area. It needs to have a overhang, it also freezes shut and anyone attempting to raise the lid will rip the rubber seal. 3. Kohler needs to add an electric or thermostat controlled shutter on at least one end. Snow and cold air just blows right in and through the unit. I'm in Michigan, we get some really bad weeks of cold & nasty weather. So does Minnesota, Wisconsin, so I just don't understand the lack of common sense.

    I liked the representative. He was very thorough and pleasant. I also like the follow-up that they do. A gentleman came in and measured and figured out where the generator would be. I had the gas company come and redo a line. They brought the unit. They put down a cement slab and then the unit on it. So it was all done very quickly, and there was no mess. Everything worked out real well. It works. My only complaint is that it is very, very loud.

    Kohler is expensive. But I have a friend who also has one, and they like the KOHLER. They've had it longer than I have. So that was a good selling point too that they've never had any problem with it. My whole experience so far has been great.

    I've had devices with Kohler engines in them before and I thought it was a good brand. I got a Kohler generator. Just two days ago, we had somebody hit a telephone pole down the street. So, we were out of power for three hours and the generator worked like a charm. Having the generator, I've got some peace of mind when there's power outage. One complaint I have is it's really noisy. When it runs, it's loud. So when it runs on its test cycle once a week, it's pretty dominant in the household. I was disappointed in the sound. I've had other generators of other homes that were quieter.

    I researched and saw a YouTube video how KOHLER makes their generator coils and how they laminate their armature. I'm an engineer and that interested me. And the way they did it, I said, "This is something I want." However, KOHLER didn't have their act together on their service reps. So, I had to get the generator certified before I turned it on and I called the salespeople, they said I had to go to Los Angeles to get a rep. I called the company I bought it from, he said, "Oh, no, here in the valley, it's an Oakhurst, not too far from you.

    Before I put the generator in, five times a year, I lose power. The year I put it in, nothing. But we had a big storm come through in California and it knocked power out for three hours. The generator, without skipping a beat, went up and I had power and my neighbors didn't. It was during the daytime. We could be down for six hours to a whole day. That's why I got my KOHLER generator. I love it. It's a good investment.

    In place of the order number which I do not have, I have provided my unit serial number. My 14RCA propane generator (in off-grid solar backup service) is very well designed and built. However, during the first year of service several serious problems occurred. I was unable to obtain any helpful support from Kuby Renewable Energy ltd who installed my system. However, Frontier Power Products of Calgary provided very prompt and effective repairs on warranty. At this point in time, after 1 1/2 years and about 130 hours of service my Kohler generator seems to be operating as it should.

    We have heavily relied on our generator at our main house due to frequent power outages. Although heavily used the generator failed after a year. We did buy a second unit for our camp and it unexpectedly came with 2 oil fill reservoirs (same unit at home has one). The rear cap was loose and blew off during its initial use.     Since installation it has kicked in every time and run like a dream (noisy dream), and it's once a week start up has never missed. However, the company who installed it are not the best for support and assistance (BHC Power). I wanted their electrician to come back and add some more circuits and label all the current circuits for clarity. They just do not respond in time. Can you confirm that the 1 year/2000 hours warranty on the amount of time it has run i.e. it's coming up to a year and it's not run a fraction of that time, but will the warranty expire on the 1 year point?

    In Sept 2022 during Hurricane Ian our generator was operating very rough and dying, unless we physically got up on a ladder and held a switch to prevent it from vibrating and losing power. This was done every 2-3 hours. The generator was under warranty at the time. We tried to get Florida Power Solutions to contact Kohler to discuss replacement options. They never did, and decided to run a series of tests to determine if they could uncover the issue. We are not sure if the issue has been fixed as we have not experienced long term power outage like we had during the hurricane. Obviously we are very concerned that the issue may repeat itself in the event of a similar outage. This is not acceptable and their customer service has been anything but professional and responsive.     Purchased a 12k backup generator. Runs fine. Luckily, only required it three short periods of time since having it installed. Only beef with the product is whenever the firmware updates, it doesn't automatically update the firmware on the generator. It's not until the local service provider comes for their annual inspection are they able to update the unit's firmware. So for approximately six to nine months I'm not being notified via my cell phone the generator is running.

    When we started looking for a home standby generator I'm the type person that reads all the reviews. When reading the reviews between Kohler, Generac, Briggs & Stratton I found that the Generac is very strong in advertising, but what I also found is Generac also had a very high repair rate.     It finally got installed last fall. Roughly October was when it actually got put into service. I did have a few issues, but they were related to the installation. Once those were corrected, the thing has run great. It actually has seen the intended use several times since it's been installed. We had a very severe ice storm last year. So it got three days of solid use. I'm happy that I made that purchase. But the documentation for the installation could have been better. They probably need to do something to address some of the enclosure issues related to keeping mice out rather than relying on the homeowner to do that. Overall, the product quality is excellent.

    The Kohler Generator is reliable and fairly quiet compared to others I've heard. The reason for the three star rating was the installation process by Generator Connection. After installation they had to come back THREE times as they'd failed to wire in all circuits as outlined in the contract. Before they'd come back they required me to send pics of insides of all the breaker panels (it's a duplex) and questioned what was supposed to be wired in even though it was outlined in the contract. I haven't voiced any complaints to them as I now have to work with them for service of the generator...but it was not a wonderful experience!

    I have had my Kohler generator for over going on 8 years. The best thing I have invested on. It has been a blessing m. Where I live in the woods we lose power a lot. 7 years ago my better half was diagnosed with cancer he was on a machine. We could not lose power. A friend recommended BGR power. I told people about the generator. I didn't sell them, but they got Kohler generators. It runs good and it’s quiet. We like it. It has been starting up great. I bought the app so it'd be online. It was working fine but I forgot the password and now, I can't see if it's working or not. I bought it so if I was on a vacation, which for now we're in Florida, I wanna see if it would kick on or not. The last time for an outage, I couldn't see if it kicked on because when our power went out, our internet went out. So, I had no idea if it was running or not. That was a bummer but that's not Kohler’s fault. It was a $500 package deal for having the app and that was a waste of money for me but everything else is running great.

    My guy that works for Kohler and that set me up, Steve, was great, and the generator has been working fine. I got it for safety. I got propane, and I wanted something where if the power goes off, I can last a couple of weeks. With all the shutdowns, PP&L, you never know when they're just gonna shut the power off. My guy just came out and serviced it couple of days ago. He's a good guy.

    Kohler generators are much better than the ones from Generac. The Kohler generator is easier to use and easy to set up all around. That's what the electrician told me too. My neighbor has a Generac, and my generator is a little quieter.

    I bought a new house down in Florida and live here full time now. We have hurricanes, so I decided to get a generator from KOHLER for backup purposes. I did my homework on it and they're definitely the best built out of all of them. Everything about KOHLER is definitely much better and you don't pay much more. They just don't advertise as much as Generac. They advertise like crazy and their units aren't as strong. They'll do the job. But I'd rather have a KOHLER any day. They're American-made too and I'm big on that.

    We were out for seven days when a hurricane came through here. In the last hurricane, we actually didn't lose power but everybody else did because I bought a generator. Last week, we were out for an hour so the generator helped me there. A generator is like insurance. You just know you're always gonna have power. I would tell everybody to buy a KOHLER.

    Needed a replacement transfer switch at time of installation. Worked fine the first couple of outages but one year in and it has not started up during last 2 power outages and the installer JDWiring can't figure out why it "throws an error". This is not acceptable. I don't know what to do now.

    Well, I was leery about Kohler since we've had so so results with their bathroom's (toilets) vanities. These whole home generators have been different so far. We have the 14RESA model (14 Kw) with an ATS switch unit. For the house's size and electrical requirements that we have this is more than enough power. Many local contractors, also including other competitor's brands will try overselling you what you do NOT need for a lot more money. Don't fall for the sales hype crap.

    Naturally, since having had this generator complex installed, we've gotten to see a couple of brief start up activations since initial installation in December 2021. This being due to the unreliable electrical utility power outages we've been having more of over the many years. That's sad. The Wisconsin Energy's (WE) infrastructure has failed to keep up since they don't invest money where necessary for better customer's home service. We finally got so tired of our refrigerated food spoiling, no usage of my CPAP machine for my sleep apnea, no air conditioning on a hot summer's night, no water from our well's pump, etc... You see, our power lines are above ground and still not buried as they should be. Therefore affected by trees and branches from thunderstorms and winter's weather woes. This will prove to be a worthwhile investment of our convenience, while other neighbors suffer these consequences that have no back up power means.

    I spoke with one of our electrical installers here and he said Kohler has a good engine. They have okay electronics and auxiliary systems. I like their new metal enclosure design. It is far superior than anything I've seen as far as service ability. You can remove the entire case around the generator in a matter of minutes. I've never had a missed start on the Kohler.     We can get some big storms here in Lakewood Ranch Florida. We do not want to be driving in dangerous traffic during an evacuation. After 4 years we had enough and Purchased a Brand New Kohler 21K Generator. We have it for one year. It was slightly higher in price compared to Generac, but is absolutely worth every penny.     Purchased a 8.5KW standby generator in 2018. 1st issue occurred in 2020 when the control module failed. Kohler covered the parts under warranty but I had to cover labor. The 2nd (major) issue occurred in December (2022) when the Generator died during an outage. The technician came out (spent 15 min with the generator) and informed me that he believes the engine seized. The generator only had 75 hours on it (only 11 hours if when you subtract out the weekly maintenance runs)! Warranty claim was submitted to Kohler since it was still within the 5 year warranty.

    Kohler REFUSED to cover the unit under warranty since I could not produce maintenance records. Again - the unit only had 75 hours on it! No one from Kohler ever actually told me what was wrong with the unit (did a seal fail? Did the block crack? Did the oil pump fail? Was the oil bad? Was it even the engine or did the generator seize?) That's all Kohler wanted to do was quickly point to a reason they did not have to cover it. Very disappointing.

    I originally got a unit seven years ago and it never worked correctly. I had got a five-year warranty and there was some significant repair work that occurred inside the warranty period and then, the engine failed right outside of the warranty period. So, Kohler ended up replacing the engine at no cost, but I had to pay the labor and that took probably six months to negotiate with them. I threatened to call the CEO of the company and as soon as I made that threat, I got somebody who was a decision-maker on the phone almost immediately. The person I dealt with was very helpful but that was the extent that I had to go to to actually get help. Then the second engine blew up and Kohler said they were not doing anything for me anymore and I have to buy a new unit. And because the plumbing and electrical set up was there for a Kohler, I had to order another Kohler. Because if I had ordered another brand, it would have had to be reconfigured.

    I now am on my second Kohler generator and I am probably a year and a half into the second one. The experience with the second one has been no interruptions. However, I am several thousand dollars behind the eight ball. I had to buy the second generator and the only thing they did for me was offer me a 10-year warranty on the second one, which wasn't that big of a deal because they offer 10-year warranties to all new customers. I had to pay to have the generator installed too. So, I'm probably $10,000 in the hole relative to where I would have been had the first generator just worked fine and I didn't have to do anything to it. So, I have probably spent close to $20,000 on two generators and a third engine and service and install.

So, it was a matter of this person saying, “Here's the bare minimum for you in terms of kilowatts, and if we did that, you would have to flip the six breakers to get the power to minimally run your home. Or you could go with this other generator that would run the whole house, and you wouldn’t have to be managing breakers.” And we were in a position where we could afford to do that upgraded generator, and that is what we chose. It was very straightforward.

    This past winter, there was one time we lost power for four hours. The generator came right on. It was fabulous. There was another time a few days later where the power flipped back and forth, so that was weird that sometimes, the generator would come on and run but only for five minutes and turn off, and be off for five minutes and turn back on. That was just a function of what was happening as the systems do all the switching to the utilities in terms of trying to get everyone power. But the generator is automated. There's nothing we have to do in terms of using it and turning it on or off. The generator would turn itself on, and power may have come back two minutes later. But in those situations, it would stay on generator power for a couple of minutes until that settles down. We've had a great experience. I'd recommend KOHLER.

    I was excited about getting our Kohler generator in and it took a little time to get it. But other than that, my experience was great. They had a subcontractor who came out to install it and it went smoothly. I have rental houses and nothing ever goes smoothly in selling and remodeling houses. The service guy said that the generator would crank up every Friday at 10:00 AM and it does that every Friday. It runs and shuts off.     Would have been 5 stars but here's why. I was pretty upset after having my brand new Kohler generator installed. Something didn't seem quite right. Wasn't running smoothly. Then one day I decided to take a look under the hood and oil was everywhere. So the contractor I used (and they were GREAT!), diagnosed two bad seals that needed to be replaced, so they did that repair.

    On the next maintenance checkup, the technician noticed oil leaking AGAIN. So my frustration level had reached the limit. My contractor had worked on my behalf and made a strong case to Kohler that the generator (engine) needed to be replaced. Kohler agreed. They swapped out the engine for another and it's been smooth sailing ever since! Now when I hear the generator come on, it runs smooth, and gives me great peace of mind. Would have been nice if Kohler threw me bone for the inconvenience like a free Wifi kit. :-) Definitely would recommend Kohler. Nice unit.

    I sought to replace my Kohler 14kw Generator on the advice of Selkirk Power Generation; They replaced the existing unit with a newer model of the same rating. The new generator had numerous problems trying to maintain voltage control which were tuning related issues. The controller was replaced with the one from my old generator so it would work. Around 200 hours, the carburetor vibrated loose (see image) and fell off the engine shutting the generator down. This was remounted and over the next 80 days continued to have problems with what was supposed to be a brand new machine. The over frequency and control problems became so severe I contacted Selkirk Power Generation and asked for a replacement, ending up paying more money to upgrade to a competitor brand. I will NEVER buy another Kohler product, the quality control has definitely gone way down because of the pandemic I guess….

    We had a new Kohler installed, found out that there was a faulty part this was still under warranty Kohler repair person came and installed the defective part finally and finally the unit works. I had to pay for the service, and the new part. They said it would take 6 to 8 weeks to receive my credit on the defective part. I contacted my service person several times and they said they have not heard back from Kohler. I paid over 300 for the service and 1,500 for the part so not happy the I have not received my credit.     I had complete confidence in the electrician that was responsible for the generator. He told me who had to look at it to oversee the final installation. I had had the representative come to the house previously, too. So it was a good experience. The generator is great. It comes on when it's supposed to. I'm glad we did it.     Kohler 12 RESV generator. After being In service for 1 1/2 years 100 hours use, (local electrician and propane company installed new), unit cranks but will not start and getting Kohler service out to look at it is impossible, I contacted the two dealers in the area and was told they do not service units they did not sell and install. I can't even get an appointment out of them, so basically your warranty is useless, Kohler appears to have a weak service network that is extremely limited and for that reason alone I can't recommend this unit, it is just a yard ornament now.

    During Hurricane IAN the whole home generator initial came on when electrical power was lost; however, as the storm intensified (around midnight), the system failed. This required waiting for winds to subside in order to open Hurricane Shutters to investigate. Discovered that the container latch failed and the cover was open, exposing the inside to wind and rain. This appears (in my opinion) to be a critical design failure, as wind tunnel testing should have identified this as a potential risk, and measures taken by KOHLER to mitigate this challenge.

    I attempted to contact the dealer with whom I have a current service agreement; however, due to the storm impact, they are unavailable. Next I attempted to contact the original installer. The response was that they were under five (5) feet of water, and had no trucks available. Lastly I called made contact with KOHLER through 1-877-402-3860 in an attempt to address this within their company. This only resulted in information on rebates and extended warranty. I need someone to waddle over to Port Charlotte, FL and repair the unit. To date, (Monday 10/03/2022) they have not even reached out to me.

    I see others have had the same troubles we have had with our Kohler Generator. We purchased in Oct 2019. It would fail when needed, resulting in unhappy guests and lost income. Finally got a guy to come out (1.5 hrs away for a licensed tech plus cost of mileage) and discovered it was never properly installed. LPG Orifice was zip tied to the unit and should have been installed to accommodate propane. We were told we were overloading the system when in fact it has been like flooding an engine. I hope it works next time. We completely regret ever having this installed to the tune of over $12,000 in investment. Nothing but frustration on our end with service calls costing way too much money.

    My 20Kw generator worked ok for the first few years. I spent $350 a year for preventive maintenance and it turned out to be for nothing. The PC controller failed leaving the unit useless! The repair cost estimate was approximately half the cost of a new unit. ($1200 part) The unit has been in service for 4-1/2 years and now it's a boat anchor. I've had 3 outages in 4-1/2 years. Looking back, this generator was a real waste! I live near Greensboro NC and there isn't a factory authorized repair person in our 5 county Triad area. The closest technician is 2-1/2 hrs away near Fayetteville NC. When I am able, I will replace this unit with a Generac. No more Kohler for me. I certainly wouldn't recommend them to anyone I know.

I was told by the installing contractor, he has seen several others do the same thing within that last few months.     Generator purchased after Hurricane Delta. Generator never worked right. We live in Louisiana. Generator was taken back to where it was purchased by buyer for repairs. When generator was returned it still did not work properly. We have sent many emails and someone has come to our place to fix it but it still does not work. We paid $6000 for the generator including installation fees and have had it since last year and it never worked right and still does not work. We have asked to return it or to replace it. Kohler Generator Customer Service does not respond. My 90 year old Mother lives on our yard and we do not want to be without electricity. We was without electricity from our electrical company 6 weeks after Delta. We are back in the hurricane season now and would like to get the issue resolved.

    We bought 3 whole house Kohler Generators over a period of the last 15 years. The first two were for our main house and a guest house on our property. The homes were on an island and we had quite a lot of power outages. They came on in about 8 - 10 seconds after we lost power and worked flawlessly. Whether they were on for only a few hours or a couple of days, we had everything going in the houses as we normally would.

    We had such great service from them, that when we sold that property and moved out in the country, within the first 2 months we bought the same whole house Kohler Generator we were so happy with all those years; this one is about 5 years old. All three were propane as we didn’t have access to natural gas. When you have heat, air-conditioning, not have to worry about food in the fridge going bad, etc. there is nothing to compare to the peace of mind. We got a lot of use out of all three and we know you would never be sorry you got one. Excellent quality!

    Ordered a 13KW generator in September 2020 with a $4000 deposit- it is now mid February 2021. I have contacted the contractor and Kohler several times for delivery and installation updates with little to no response. Covid is one thing, lack of a response and service is another. I will never trust or do business with Kohler generators again as they have not provided timely responses or given confirmation of a delivery date while they still appear to be selling the product through numerous 'dealers'. This used to be a respectable company - Just find another company.

    I own a 17KW Kohler generator which only has 785 hours on it. Recently the fan became unattached from the engine and damaged the fan shroud on the unit. Kohler has discontinued the part and no replacement is available. So now I am left with a hunk of metal that cannot be used since Kohler does not have a replacement part. I would not recommend a Kohler generator because even if it works today like it may not work tomorrow because a critical part is not available.

    We are an electrical contractor who have installed over 200 generators. To keep the review legit, we will not disclose the brand we have sold exclusively since 2012, however we will share that Kohler machines have been the least reliable and most problematic of any generator we have ever sold or serviced, including; Winco, Generac, and Briggs and Stratton. Kohler will not answer tech questions directly, you must call the distributor. Our local distributor has a guy who pages through the manual and reads it to you over the phone. We finally partnered with another strictly generator company so that we’d have someone with years of field experience on actual machines, and regarding more complex issues. Here are examples of problems we’ve had. Should mention that these units were all serviced annually:

    - 14RES, 176 hours. Bad controller, 67 days out of warranty, won’t hold the exercise program. Installed a software update with no change. Local distributor was aware of the issue, but Kohler was not standing by it. New controller $1700 plus installation.
    - 14 RESA 211 hours. Stepper motor failed, easy fix. 6 months later and 1 yr out of warranty, the windings smoked and burnt up, $2500-3000 fix. We junked it and put in a _____ __. ______.
    - 8 RES 3 years old Controller failed, replaced with new. $1600.

    - 14 RESL 56 hours, that’s right 56! Shut down repeatedly on UU. Racked our brains and tried the logical steps per the service manual to figure out why. Gave up and called our friendly competition who loaned us a new controller. That was it. Customer bought the home with the generator and had not service records, but was ineligible for warranty coverage according to our distributor.

    Proceed with caution and a contingency budget for repairs out of warranty.... Our biggest complaint is reliability.

    Purchased a Kohler 20KW natural gas unit 1-9-17 -unit installation turned into a disaster, finally got unit installed and started. We live along the East Coast. Wanted the peace of mind when the power went out that the unit would keep our home livable, unit worked great until 11-29-2018. Have been trying to get unit repaired properly since, today is 12-5-2019. For a year I've had techs here multiple times, replaced battery and gas regulator at a cost of $300.00 to me. Unit still will not start and run spins over but doesn't start. Tech came again replaced stepper motor, same issue. Tech came back removed throttle body to check gasket at butterfly, was ok. Tech came back checked all the internal wires for poor connection none found, tech came back took out controller and took it to shop to check it over, came back reinstalled controller same issue, ordered new controller and installed, unit now will start but hunts terribly.

    Told tech if the unit will start I would live with it. That was end of August 2019. September of 2019 we had to evacuate due to hurricane. Unit did not start when the power went out. Called tech. Came back got failure history out of unit. Today 12-5-2019 unit doesn't start! 2019- The Kohler company doesn't stand behind their units. If they did this would certainly deserve a replacement unit. I filed a complaint with the BBB. I would urge everyone with problems to do the same.

    Purchased a 20KW Kohler Generator from a Generator Retailer. They were great installing and servicing it. The thing has had problems since day one hunting, voltage drops constantly. Kohler has said the motor needs to be replaced but won't pay for it. The Tech. has been out here in storms in winter and summer at least 20 times. Called Kohler Customer Service, that's a waste of time. I contacted the President of Kohler. He was nice but palmed me off to his VP of Customer who is of no help just puts you off, he was useless and told me not to contact them any longer, what kind of company are they????

    Anyone wanting a generator stays away from Kohler. They do not honor their warranty and their Customer Service just puts you off and tells you, "It's your problem. Pay up!" The controller was changed 2X, the entire generator parts except for the motor were replaced, gas regulator, all the other components carb, idler arms, everything at considerable costs, and now they say it's the motor. 1800.00 just for motor and labor. It's cheaper to replace the entire unit with another better brand and better customer service. Pissed of Customer.

    If you are considering installing a whole-house generator, I would recommend against Kohler. After having our Kohler 20 RESAL model professionally installed five years ago, the machine has almost never operated correctly. It has only kicked on automatically for a few of the many power outages we’ve had. We’ve had to call repairmen at least 8 times in the short duration since it was installed, and have already poured more money into repairs than the machine is worth. Kohler has been resistant and argumentative over honoring their short warranty. After just 9 hours of operation, the machine now requires another thousand dollars worth of repairs. Kohler has refused any help. I would rate Kohler generator operation, customer service, warranty, and my satisfaction with this product as poor. We are now replacing this machine with a Generac. The Generac comes with a ten year warranty.
