What to consider before you buy a hot tub in San Diego
Residents in central San Diego where yard sizes tend to be smaller should look for compact hot tub models. Some local companies even specialize in custom backyard design to maximize space.
Windy conditions in some parts of San Diego make hot tub covers a necessity when trying to keep debris out of the water. In desert areas, look for companies that can install a shade cover over your hot tub to avoid damage from strong sunlight. Residents of mountain communities, where the temperature drops below freezing, might consider installing hot tubs indoors or in enclosures, so they can be enjoyed year-round.
Different dealers carry different brands, so if some models don’t have what you’re looking for, you can compare with other models. Also, be sure to compare warranty plans, ask about maintenance and if the dealer includes any services with the hot tub sale.
Hot tub regulations in San Diego, California
In San Diego, regulations apply to any structure intended for swimming or recreational bathing that contains water 18 feet in depth or more. Spas are required to have an enclosure, at least one safety feature accepted by the County, at least one non-redundant safety feature accepted by the State of California and entrapment avoidance.
Your hot tub either has to have an enclosure with a minimum barrier height of 60 inches, or it needs to be 100 feet from your property line. San Diego municipal code also sets individual requirements for above ground hot tubs that do not have a locking safety cover. These codes comply with the American Society for Testing Materials Emergency Performance Standards.
