Had (2) contractors cancel on me at the last minute because they said they DO NOT want to work with Total Protect Home Warranty. We were waiting all day, and one half hour past our appointment, we called the contracting company and they told us we will not work with Total Protect. I had called and cancelled early June, but then my credit card was billed my monthly rate. This is the 2nd time I have called and cancelled. They're "pitch line" is someone will call you back, to cancel. They never do. I have to file a complaint with my credit card company so they stop billing us. When you call, you'll get a RUDE ** girl every time, just an FYI.

I've had TotalProtect Home Warranty for about five years now. I got it to reduce the headache of when something goes wrong. The claims process is easy but the website is not effective because there are a lot of things that I can’t do as their website doesn’t cover all the things. For one, I have TotalProtect Gold which allows me to get service twice a year for my AC and heater system. But when I go to their website, I get a trouble ticket but the service is not for a trouble ticket. So although I prefer to use the web, I skip their website and go straight to them. I've had no problems with their reps and the process works that well.

For my most recent claim, the technician was very good. Unfortunately, he doesn't work for TotalProtect that often so he wasn't sure how to bill me. We also didn’t get some answers as far as if my $75 would go to him and if he'd get the rest from TotalProtect. We dodged through it and hoped it worked. Other than that, it was a good job. The tech discovered some problem I didn’t know I had and fixed it as well on the AC. Now it’s working very well.

There was a time, though, when their technicians had to drive six miles to get to my house. We’re about an hour and a half North of Atlanta, so we’re not that far in the boondocks. I waited a day and didn’t get a call back so I told TotalProtect who did this service back in December when I had the system check and they found them. If I'm in a large city or a populous area it’s not a problem but if I get out of that populous area, TotalProtect's service is not very good in that I have to call and tell them who to call like who was the technician who came last time. That’s a problem. The next time I call, I probably have to explain this again. I thought TotalProtect worked with some of the local vendors in all regions. With TotalProtect, there are improvements that need to be made.

I like TotalProtect and I've had them for a while. Submitting a claim was easy and if I have a problem, the people that I talk to work it out. They're very nice. There was a little problem with the technicians last time but the technicians kept coming back until they got it right. I think they did a good job. My air conditioner is cooling the house. It was very good, overall.

Worst customer service I've ever dealt with. Not helpful what so ever. Not to mention the two and a half weeks it took to settle my claim after many phone calls and the run around I got each time I called. When I closed my account they continued to take funds from my account without explaining the reason why. If you have a claim settled and its more than the balance of your yearly amount they want the balance paid before they let you off the hook. Good help you if you have a older house, you need to make sure you read the fine print other wise you will be coming out of your pocket for a lot more than you expect.

On hold times, every time I have called, have been 30-45 minutes. I actually just called, it took over 30 minutes for someone to call, and when I finally got to speak with someone, they put me on hold, and then came back and hung up on me!
We put in a claim on 6/16 for A/C service during the worst heat wave we have had here in the South in a really long time, and it is now 6/27 and the company doing the repair are STILL waiting on Total Protect to get back with them for instructions.
Half of the customer service reps can barely speak English, so very hard to understand.

    Horrible, horrible company.

I received my paperwork saying I had full coverage and my fridge started to not work. I figured I would call before it completely stopped working. The 1st person they sent out had 1 star reviews online and told me that I had a bad compressor and that they would let warranty company know. After following up every day for 3 days they submitted a incomplete report and because no one wants to work on compressors they said I had a bad fridge lining which is why my fridge wasn't getting cold. Complete lie!!! I had to wait 5 more days and they wanted to send out a second opinion (each time me having to take off work). They guy couldn't figure out what was wrong and after charging me $100 said he would list the motherboard, compressor and control panel as they all didn't work. Warranty company denied claim as the cost became expensive as total amounted to $1100 or so. They tried to say it was a pre-existing condition however technician said that these items fail all the time and give no warning. Again! BUYER BEWARE! They have over 2000 negative reviews on the BBB.

I've been using TotalProtect for two years now and I’m very happy with the service. It’s been really helpful. Claim submission has been super easy. The biggest thing I like about it is the help in finding people who can do the work and then it also saves me a lot of money.

We’ve had some good and bad experiences with the technicians. In one situation when we had a leak issue, one technician told us we needed to completely destroy our shower and rebuild a new one. We got a second opinion somewhere else and it turned out we just needed to re-grout the tub and change the shower head, which fixed the issue. So that wasn’t good.

The people who came out for the first claim were great and very courteous. They took care of everything they needed to and explained what they did and it was a good experience. I have their business card now so if I have something down the road that was not covered or just needed them for something else, I would use them again. Most of their technicians have been very professional but there were a few that I've had issues with. DISGUSTED AND DISAPPOINTED. I had Total Protect (TP) for over 7 years and they only made a couple repairs. One was to a washer and one was for the AC. Not expensive repairs for either. When my dishwasher started leaking they had a handyman service from 50 miles away come. He tightened up a screw underneath. Said that was the problem. I paid him my deductible of $125.00 and he left. It was still leaking so I called TP again. Well, they told me it was a structural problem and this was not covered. I asked what kind of structural problem and they would not say. After many phone calls I finally had a customer service rep tell me there were hairline cracks in my waterline. It seemed like no one there knew what the problem was and would only say structural which I guess this was their way of not paying. I CANCELLED. When the installer came to remove the old dishwasher and install my new, he said there were no hairline fractures in my waterlines. He did not know what was causing the leak but it was not the waterlines. After all the years of paying this company, I could not believe that they did this to me. Evidently, they can say the problem is structural and avoid paying certain claims. Good way out for them. I guess you can consider many, many things "structural." Never again will I pay another home warranty company. Better to save my money and make my own repairs and/or purchases.

TotalProtect Home Warranty's claim process is easy. However, I had a problem last time with a claim about my stove because all of a sudden they won't pay for something that was paid for before. They’re telling me now there's a small clause in the policy that they don't pay for the locks on self-cleaning ovens. I'm trying to figure out who buys an oven that's not self-cleaning nowadays. They didn't resolve it so I had to pay for it. The girl who was on the phone put a bitter taste in my mouth. If that was my first time dealing with TotalProtect, I'd probably cancel my service. Since I've never had any problems before, I'm just going to overlook it. The technicians that came to service my appliances were wonderful. I haven't had any problems with the technicians, regardless which company they've been. The quality of their work was wonderful. If I can go straight to them and cut the middleman out, I sure would. They did fix the problem, but then the technicians broke another part while installing the unit and they claim they are not sending anyone to fix it, that we are to contact the company who installed and they say they are fixing it either. It's been a nightmare with this company. To this day it is still not fixed. They use companies that are out to make money off the consumer because the warranty companies only pay them about $250.00 to fix the problems that consumers might have. They will write up tickets that they say will require permits and never show the permits or outdate wiring or some sort of other problems so PLEASE beware. It's all a RIPOFF!!!

We renewed our home warranty with HMS thinking that what if something major went wrong, like the AC going out, it would be covered. Our AC coil had a leak so it needs to be replace, but the warranty company is saying they will only cover a portion of the AC repair, so our out of pocket would be $900. Our deductible is $100, which we have paid already from the first time the AC repair company came out and didn't fix the problem, a month ago. We kept the home warranty so we wouldn't have to pay a bunch of money out of pocket. Guess that was a huge mistake!!!

Every time we have had to deal with HMS has been a complete joke and have to wait on the phone on hold for 30 plus minutes. If you say you cover an appliance or repair of a home unit then it should be covered. If replacing the coil means replacing the drain line and freon lines that feed the coil, which are leaking too, and are part of the AC system, then it should be covered. Its all part of the AC system.

Submitting a claim with HMS was pretty user-friendly. In fact, in the last several months, we've unfortunately had to use the warranty. Still, we're fairly pleased this year with the service. It works pretty quick. It was pretty efficient with the claims reps. You call and they get you a number to a local person, and then off you go so it's been relatively painless. For the most part, it was great with the technicians and we're very pleased with them overall. But we had an issue with the dishwasher. The replacement wasn't the same as what was in there, but was only about half the quality of the dishwasher we had. However, the replacement works. It took a while to get it. We were for about a month and a half washing dishes by hands. We did end up paying a deductible or two along the way there.

Also, it took quite a while for the techs to get the problem figured out and to have the claim finally approved. There was a week or two where I was told that I'd hear back and I didn't hear back and then followed up. They were deciding whether to repair or replace the dishwasher. We got little follow-up from the warranty company on how we should fix that piece or how to get it rolling.

We had a trained person come out and tell us that it wasn't a leak or the dishwasher, and then found out later that it was the dishwasher. So, we had a subsequent leak. We have holes in our basement from that leak and on the drywall and the ceiling. At some point, somebody indicated we could submit something and get that fixed but we haven't done it yet. Recently, we had a major drain come out and they did a couple of things and were very responsive and receptive. I really did appreciate their customer service and the timing. They got right out there and did their job. Everything else has been fine and we're considering renewing our warranty which is coming due pretty soon.

We bought our house 10 years ago and we thought it was a good idea to acquire a home warranty. It sounded like a great thing to do at the time. So we looked at a few different providers and liked what TotalProtect had to offer. Their claims process is extremely easy. All I need to do was to call the 1-800 number, then put the number that corresponds with the house and my plan. Afterwards, I'm given to an operator who listens to the problems and immediately gives me somebody in my area who will take care of it. Most of everything is taken cared of within one day.

The only time that we've had a problem was when it was a major heat wave and the contractor was swamped. We told him our daughter has cancer and so he came at 2 o'clock in the morning together with his son. He took care of our problem in 15 minutes. I asked where they were off to at 2 o'clock in the morning and he said, "I've got more stuff to do. I'll probably be working until 5 or 6." He's a wonderful guy. They're dedicated people and I really appreciate it. And then, the only other problem we had that took forever was when we had a refrigerator that died and it took two weeks to get the part. Somebody had the part, yet they wanted the cheapest way to do it. I could have gone up to the parts store which is half a mile away and get that part then they would have put it in, but it wasn't gonna be $75 as it would have been $300 for the compressor and everything else. Anyway, they got it done.

The quality of the work they performed is usually pretty good and there are no problems. We've enjoyed having TotalProtect. When someone has a house with expensive equipment inside, it's always nice to know these could be fixed for less than $100. We do pay a lot of money for the whole year but it's certainly worth it and it's a peace of mind.

They are finding excuses to deny claims. I've had a plumbing issue where the waste pipe broke under a toilet. Even though pipe breakage is covered, they denied it saying that was caused by improper tile repair. What? I never had any tile, and moreover the plumber's report did not mention this at all. Next my two AC units stopped working. HVAC contractor said the coils were leaking on both units and needed to be replaced. TotalProtect says North Carolina code requires that the coil must be replaced together with the condenser, and because this is a code requirement, TotalProtect will not cover the condensers, only the coils (becasue there's an exclusion in the contract for modifications due to code requirements). That is a lie. The condenser should/must be replaced because mismatched coil and condenser will not work well together and may void manufacturer's warranty. The North Carolina code has no such requirement. Therefore, TotalProtect must either cover the condensers, or not replace them. They want to replace them at my expense.

TotalProtect also known as Cross Country Home Services is a shady company. Stay away.

I am looking into suing them because I now have to pay over $2500 out of pocket for what should have been covered.

TotalProtect Home Warranty had a $75 deductible, and if need so, they will replace whatever goes wrong with my appliances and things. I've had some good and some bad experiences with them. The bad one was last year when they had to put a compressor in my air conditioner and the air compressor went to the wrong place somewhere and they couldn’t find it. We were without air for 21 days and it was a 100-degree weather at that time. I kept calling their reps back but nobody could give me an answer on when I was going to get my air conditioner fixed.

Other than that, submitting a claim was not a problem. Their reps were good all of the time in getting the work done, except for that one time. I had a good experience with the technician every time they came out although some were better than others. They always did an excellent job. I also hadn't had any problem with them having to come back to do any of the same work.

We got TotalProtect Home Warranty through our bank so many years ago. The last claim we had with them regarding our AC was great. The claim process was easier than in the past. We dealt with the same issue on another heat and air-conditioning unit once before and it was a total nightmare. It took them a whole month to put in a new air-conditioning system. TotalProtect cleaned up their act. We’ve never had any problem with the technicians. The heating and air-conditioner company we dealt with this time was extremely prompt and knowledgeable and the service was fantastic. They worked really hard to get the problem with the AC resolved and did a good job. The quality of their work was great. The only thing we’re concerned about was the $1,500 out-of-pocket costs that weren't covered. I can understand paying $400 or $500+, but with what we’ve been paying, $1,500 was extravagant.

They came out, but the problem turned out to be more than just the opener, and we had to have the whole door replaced. The tech that HMS Home Warranty sent was capable of doing that, so we went ahead with them because they were competitive with the other bids, and they did the work. HMS Home Warranty has been super every single time I submit a claim. I found out it's easier to do it online. They get back to you quickly and I'm well-pleased with it. It's almost like my problem is theirs, and that’s unusual in today’s market. Because people usually are, “I don’t care. I don’t have time to talk to you.” I only had one little problem though with one of the technicians. He didn’t quite do the job the way it should have been done. He was the heating and air conditioning guy who had found something that was not wired properly and he hot-wired it. That upset me a little bit, but I called HMS back and he came back out and fixed it. It was a shame I had to call, but he was new in his business and I was happy with the end result.

It was also a little difficult for me at first to find out what I was really covered and what I wasn’t. I had a hot tub out back that I thought was covered in my policy and then I found out it wasn’t. That could have been a little clear and what is broken down on their sheets. And I understand that they can cover the same expenses involved and whatnot, and I didn’t know that going in. It was a little bit hard to read. Other than that, I'm well satisfied. I've already recommended HMS. It's perfect. And getting a home warranty is a great thing to do. Years passed when I did everything myself. It was a little different, but as I get older and I don’t have time to do those things.

We have had Total protect home warranty for many years, and despite our loyalty, every time we have a claim it is an ordeal. We have two homes covered by them, both next to each other, both owned by my father. I leave in one with my Husband and 4 kids, and My father lives in the other with my mom, and my 80 yr old aunt and 90 yr old grandmother(my dads sister and my mom's mom). We live in NC, summers are pretty harsh. Two years ago my Air conditioner fail, and it took 2 months(may 22nd to July 23rd) to get it fixed, first they were not going to, then they could not get the part because the company did not make them, then it was not covered, then I had to pay for most of it. Finally after going back and forth, we got the air fixed. Last summer, the cooling failed again, they came out and fixed it quickly (two weeks) but could not tell me why the part they had replaced needed more cooling. So that brings me to this year. May 9th we woke up the air, once again not working. I filled a claim. The next day I got a call from a company called Accent Comfort Services, Llc , they could come out the following day between 8-10 am. I asked if they worked on my type of unit, and they said yes. The next day at 9:45am I called to find out why they had not come yet, I was told that they did and that I told them I did not need them. That was not the case, they had gone to the wrong address, so they rescheduled for later that day(making me lose a whole day from work). When he came out, he was very confused and told me they did not work on my system. So he left. I got a called back from my home warranty with another company name, and to call them. So I did, they also did not work on the unit. So I called the warranty company back and was told that Brown service (which was the company that had replace the part two years ago, and worked on it last year) would be available and they would call me. Two days went by, and I did not hear from them. So I called again, the person at total protect I spoke with was very rude, and even said that claims were processed in the ordered received. I told her, a dishwasher does not have the same priority than air conditioner in the summer, she said, "ma'am the temperatures this weekend have been in the upper 70's so I think you are ok" She went on to say that brown service did not have an apt till the following Friday, a week away. I told her I did not have a choice. The following Wednesday I called to see what time they were coming on Friday since I had not gotten a time, and was told they were not scheduled to come. I escalated my complaint to a manager, 35 min on hold, I got a manager and they got brown service out the next day. Brown service was out for about 10 min, said the unit had a problem they did not understand and that they called the manufacturer and when they get a call back they will be back out. Another week goes by and they come back out for 10 minutes( I called 3 times during that week getting a different story every time) said the compressor(part they had replaced 2 yrs ago) was bad again and they would call my home warranty. After calling for 4 consecutive days, I was told by a manager, that they were originally going to replace the condenser, but saw that they had just replaced that two years ago, so that they were asking Brown service to quote a full replacement. I told them I would be willing to replace with a regular unit instead of the Geo thermal if it would be less problem and get the unit replace sooner. On Friday the 3rd, Brown service came out to take measurements. I called the following Monday and was told it was under review, I called again on Tuesday and was told that they were giving me the option of replacing the condenser and I had to pay $205 or they would give me $1800 towards a new unit. I told them $1800 would not even cover half of the replacement and to go ahead and replace condenser. I called Wednesday and was told the part was ordered. I called Friday and was told the part(that two years ago manufacturer did not make any longer) would arrive on the 13th of june. But they did not have a tracking number for me. To make matters worse, temperatures are in the high 90s, and I have a 3 yr old with allergies that has had to camp downstairs because the upstairs if in the low 90s. I have had to initiate every call for an update. I offered them the number and name of the company that installed the system and would know more about it and was told they only deal with their providers. Well, they hire providers that are not reliable, that provide second hand service, and are never available. To top it all, my fathers unit at their home has stop working last night and when he made the call, the earliest they can get Accent Comfort Services, Llc out it Friday, a week of high 90s with a 90 yr old and 80 yr old in the home. Part still not delivered, my air still not fixed and I cannot get them to move any faster. This company claims to Never use deceptive practices to try to deny your claim. Typical replacement: $4,000, and they offered me 1800. I have been very patience and given them the opportunity to resolve this. It took them 3 months to come out and fix my microwave, and its been over a month on my Air conditioner.

We have purchased this warranty protection for at least 11 years. It is now June 13th and we have been going back and forth about out AC since May 27th. They sent the company that they use to repair but we ended up with a bigger mess. That company only checked the outside unit and added freon. Needless to say, that wasn't the problem. The part that's in the attic ruined the ceiling in our garage. They never even checked to see if there was a problem with that part. We called and they came back and said there was a problem that of course was not covered. That company suggested a new unit. DENIED!

We eventually had 2 more companies that we paid to come look at it and they found additional problems. I have contacted Total Protection at least 8 times and have submitted contact information for the second company so that a more reputable company can talk to them about everything going on with the AC unit. The unit is 16 years old and the original installer said they last about 15 years. Nonetheless, the 2nd two HVAC companies are saying it needs to be replaced. My next move is BBB and whatever else I need to do.

I'm not sure if this will ever be taken care of but people need to know that they are not helpful at all. For the 11 years we've paid we could have just saved and replaced ourselves. Oh, and I didn't mention that every person you talk to tells you something different. Our claim was supposed to be in authorization and research on Friday but I call on Monday and the representative tells me it was denied over a week ago. Save yourself the headache and don't use this company.

There are two bedrooms and a full bathroom on the lower level, and the air conditioning on the lower level doesn’t work. It isn’t a basement. We're not happy since they never bothered to tell us, and it wasn’t in any of the information. It was completely frustrating, and when we talked to them a few times, they said they're going to charge us because there was nothing wrong. They said it was never hooked up, so nothing’s broken. Additionally, they said it was $65 at first, and then they sent us a bill for $100.

The guy that came out here to check it was a local air conditioning guy. He felt so bad for us and refused to charge us. When the HMS people called and asked if he charged us, I told them he agreed with us, he felt bad and he wouldn't charge us. HMS turned around and charged us. The guy that was here was awesome. The AC stopped working the way he thought it would. He figured out what the problem was and took care of it. For the second claim, I called for the refrigerator-freezer and the stove. The stove was my user error, though. But for the refrigerator-freezer, the tech fixed the fan in the freezer.

A couple of days later it stopped working again, so I had to call back. We didn’t have to pay another copay for that. The guy came back and he said we needed a board. He had to order that. That was Sears that they were working with. It was quite a fiasco because they called us and said that the board wasn't coming yet and it could take 10 to 14 days. They would have to reschedule us and we'd have to call them and see when it got shipped. I kept asking why I needed to do that. But the board came the evening of the day after it was supposed to. I had to call Sears back to send someone out. They sent someone out yesterday and he was as nice as the first guy. He said he got it fixed. He put the board in and it seems to be working now.

It's horrible because we can't stay in the house and we either have to turn around and drive three hours back to our house or go to a hotel. I called several other contractors to see if they work on the weekends and they do. If they can't get anybody and won't approve work on a weekend, I'll start to look for somebody else. I have another month with TotalProtect.

TotalProtect's price was very competitive and it had a broader range of coverage than other plans we'd seen. We called and told them that our disposal quit working and we quickly got a call from a local contractor who received the order to come out and replace the unit. He asked us some questions and gave us a time that he was going to come or he could come the following day. He then came over and within 30 minutes, he put the disposal in and cleaned up after himself. Our house, kitchen floor and cabinet were cleaner after he got through than way before he started. It was a wonderful thing and it made a believer out of us.

It's very easy to get an appointment with TotalProtect. We have used them about three times and they've been good, except for this last time with the air conditioner. The tech was very friendly but took about two days to get down here and when he did, it was 11:30 or 11:00 at night. Then he went down again and it took maybe three days for him to come down here. The first time he came here he said he had a lot of customers. But I found out that that company is Waco which is nearly a hundred miles from where I live, which is in Waxahachie, Texas.

So for the second time he came I told them where this guy lived and that it's kind of ridiculous that he's coming from a hundred miles away. But they said they'd like to use the same people that worked on that unit before because they know what's going on. But it took three days for him to get down here. They just apologized again and said they had a backlog. But that was the only bad experience. They fixed it but it took too long for him to get here and it's unrealistic.

One of my friends had TotalProtect and she told me about it. I was going to look into it but then Bank of America, the one I have my mortgage with, sent me an email offering it. So I got it through them. I've heard people had some bad experiences with the homeowner’s insurance, but I figured that TotalProtect had to be legit if my bank brought them up.

I went through the automatic service, which was very easy, when I filed a claim because it was late at night when I called. It was a 24-hour service and I didn’t have any kind of problem. Even though I didn’t get to speak to a live person, I was asked all the questions. I input the information and they gave me a claim number and the phone number of who to call right away.

The first technician came on a Friday and I didn't really care for his uppity attitude at all. I needed a blower for my air conditioning for the furnace and he didn’t have one. He told me that he would have to go back and see if they had it in the plan. If they did, he will come back. But he didn’t and he didn’t call either. Eventually, I called and he said somebody will be out Monday. The second guy who came out was great and the work was wonderful.

I called with my first claim 4 days ago and they are still looking for a service partner in my area to provide service. I actually had to call to get an update. They are still looking but told me if I find someone I can have them come out and diagnose the problem and call in with problem and all costs for approval. Approval would taken at least an hour which would mean the service company would have to make another trip out. So I have called and waiting for a call back to schedule. From what I have read in other reviews I'm thinking they will be very quick to deny any claim.

Yesterday I called with a second claim. The first HMS Representative I spoke to had absolutely no knowledge of the makeup of a house. I had to spell DUCTWORK for him and then he proceeded to ask if the AC Unit was inside, outside or a window unit. Who has ductwork running from a window unit? I asked to be transferred to someone else that had some knowledge of a house. I was told that he could transfer my call so I ended the called and called back. Second call I was given a service company name & number and claim number. I promptly called them (during normal working hours) and was told they would have to call me back once they talk to someone on how to handle a home warranty claim. Are you kidding, they are in their Network of Service Partners. Oh and I'm still waiting for them to call me back. However, I think I may have fixed that issue myself. $100 saved.

I'm sure a home warranty is well worth getting if they actually cover your claims and can actually get a service partner to even come out. Right now, I'm not a happy customer. It shouldn't be this hard to get service or a claim approved. Gave 1 star only because ZERO isn't an option. If and when, my claims get resolved in my favor I will edit my review but for now this is more painful than going to the dentist.

Stuff doesn’t break every month in every household but I’m paying almost $500 a year, and on top of that, if some things were to break, I got to pay $85 for a serviceperson each time they come out. I guess in the long run, maybe once an air-conditioner breaks, $5,000, I’d paid for it already. In a sense, it's probably fair as long as the price doesn't go up.

But surprisingly, submitting a claim to them was real simple. When my appliance broke, I didn't think of calling them because I forgot I had the warranty, so it was about too late. But it was a good and easy experience all the way around. The claims rep was very helpful, the technician was very knowledgeable and professional, and so far, the quality of the work is good. Once he found that it was the second time somebody was down here for the air conditioning, he simply said, “Well, there’s nothing I can do. I’ll put some Freon and then I’ll see." That was the extent of it. I said, "If you put Freon in and it’s a year later, maybe you could find the leak." But he said he'll never find it. He was so unprofessional and didn’t even have a bill. I went to pay him cash and he said I had to give him a check because he didn't have a bill. That work was never completed. He shot a Freon in and he left. When I turn the air-conditioning again I’m probably going to have the same problem. That’ll be the third call ‘cause the AC has a small leak in some place.

The first time a guy came for the air-conditioner, he was very good and spent three or four hours looking for the leak but couldn’t find it. He said they were probably going to replace something in the unit if they can't find the leak. Despite that, he got me up and running. I was happy. Last year, when it got warm, I turned the air-conditioning on and I had no air-conditioning again. When it gets hot, I’ll be calling TotalProtect Home Warranty again. When the next call comes I don’t want the second guy they sent - that is for sure and I will tell them that. They sent a survey online and I filled it out. I said I was very disappointed, but nothing was ever done about it. I feel a little nervous about calling the next time. I've had some good experience and some bad ones with the company. There was also a guy who came for the dryer who was very good and was able to fix it.

The man that came and looked at the unit looked through the fan to come to this conclusion. He did not test and does not know for sure this is what caused the issues. Regardless I do have dogs that pee in my yard.

This is normal wear and tear at my house. The home warranty company will not cover the unit b/c its not normal wear and tear. How can they determine normal wear and tear on a unit that is outside. The home warranty company tell me my home is covered every single day but this is not true. They cover what they want to cover and not their average customer. How can they determine looking through a fan on the unit that is outside that it was solely caused by my dogs. However, I'm not too happy about my second claim regarding the pool. There's been erratic communication. I've had to follow up two or three times and it went over for a span of five days to get HMS to understand that a plumber can't provide service on a pool. The contractor had to tell HMS that they can't service my problem.

After that, HMS told me they couldn't find another contractor to service the pool. So I found somebody but when I called HMS the next day, they said that they're not ready to do that yet and will continue the search for a few more days. This is after they have given me the authority to find somebody. Now, since they don't have somebody, I have to pay the service out of my pocket and they'll reimburse me, which can take at least four to six weeks. That's tough and disappointing. It sucks that the second claim was not handled the way I would expect it to be.

Horrible company. My fiancé and I recently purchased an older home, and an HMS home warranty was provided as part of the purchase agreement. We were very glad we had when on our third day in the house we noticed the main drain stack leading from the second floor bathroom was not draining, and instead water was pouring down the sides of the stack through two stories of the home and down onto the basement floor. We promptly called their customer service number. They were very sympathetic and set up an appointment with a local plumbing company to come out and inspect the problem. The plumber arrived, assessed the problem and concluded that the cast iron pipe that the stack was composed of likely had numerous breaks at various places and would need torn out and replaced with PVC.

This was certainly not what we were hoping to hear after only a few days in the home, but we were glad we had the warranty to help cover the expense. He then mentioned that they had never submitted a claim this large to HMS before, and he would be surprised if they covered it. He took pictures, submitted them to HMS, collected his $85 fee, said good luck and left. I very quickly received a call from HMS denying the claim saying that it was a pre-existing problem. I reminded them that their warranty claimed to cover pre-existing issues, and was told that if I submitted a copy of our home inspection they would review the claim. I promptly did this since our inspection clearly noted that the cast iron drain line was in good serviceable condition. Five days later I finally receive a call back saying that they are still not covering the repair because the inspection report says the drain line was not inspected.

When I point out that it says the main sewer line was not inspected and that this is not referring to the drain stack whose material and condition is clearly listed below their representative begins to tell me I'm incorrect and not reading my own inspection report correctly! At this point I tell him that it's obvious they don't want to cover the repair because of the cost and are looking for some way to legitimize their refusal of coverage. He again tells me I'm misunderstanding my own report and they are well within their rights to refuse this claim. At this point I've had enough, and after a few angry words just hung up.

This company will be happy to sell you their "coverage", but be aware they have no intention of actually covering anything. If you are a homeowner thinking of purchasing a home warranty for peace of mind there may be good companies out there, but these guys aren't one. If you are in the market for a home and the seller offers you a home warranty make sure it's not HMS! You might as well save your money. You'll need it when they deny your claim.

Furthermore, I had to move out because I had two little baby dogs. When they finally did get here, they got the furnace fixed. They didn't fix it very well and a little bit later, it broke again. Again, they didn't get here for two days - this was in November or December.

I file claims over the phone and I have to drag service out of their representatives. The person I talked to a month and a half ago for a hot water tank rupture was not that helpful. But the people who came to work on it were really good. They were able to fix it well and in a very timely manner. I also called them to file a claim for the refrigerator and that one worked out really well. HMS service has been good and bad, but it's gotten much better since we've first moved in.

Overall, HMS have sent technicians here three times - two times for my refrigerator and one time it was for my range. At one point, both were out here at the same time, so that was kind of bad. Nevertheless, they took care of the issue. It's been a very positive experience with this company and I recommend them.

Our house is old so we thought it might be a good idea to get a warranty. We looked into several companies and we liked TotalProtect. And since it was through our credit union, we went ahead and signed up with them. Submitting a claim has been an awful process - trying to get through somebody and finding someone to talk to, and always getting people that you cannot understand. My husband has talked to the claims reps and it has been tough for him because he doesn't hear well and then he got someone with an accent. But the tech from Sears has been very pleasant. He did the job as quick as he could and went through the dishwasher, but he couldn't find the problem. It was just one of those things that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, and the dishwasher just felt like working while the tech was here. Overall, TotalProtect has been very good to work with. We are very satisfied and we've recommended them to a friend.

My realtor recommended a few home warranty companies, and then I looked through the different policies that she had recommended, and HMS Home Warranty had the best overall coverage. As far as filing a claim, it's a very easy process. I just called and let them know what my issue was, then it took a day or two for them to find somebody. There was also a quick turnaround time for getting everything done. My husband dealt with the technician and didn't have any complaints. The issue hasn't happened again, so I'm satisfied with the work done. As for the cost, the warranty has paid for itself with the first use because the guy who came out said that if we didn't have this warranty, it would've cost $450, which was the cost of the home warranty.

The furnace won’t shut and I had a couple of different people coming. I live here in Mercer and there were all kinds of dealers within 3 to 5 miles. The first time made me mad as TotalProtect brought some guys from New Castle and I wanted to pass them up. Then the last ones from Greenville Comfort were not too bad. They got the furnace shut off but they didn’t cure the problem completely by a long shot and it still looks screwed up as something’s wrong with the thermostat. I don’t think the problem is completely solved and that’s what they're here for.

I was a maintenance man and did this stuff myself so I understand how things go. There’s more wrong with what they took care of although I understand that sometimes things don’t act up when one's there, that stuff's hard to detect at times. So far if I’ll have a problem, I’ll let them know and when I called in, they said that they’ll take care of it in a timely manner and they'll get someone out. What I don’t like is bringing somebody 30 to 40 miles away when there’s a guy within a few miles or 10 miles from me.

I've had a few jobs done by HMS this year and working with them is always nice. They have a very good customer service and submitting a claim was very easy. I had no trouble connecting to an automated system then they gave me a phone number to call for a contractor. The whole process was very simple. As for the technicians, one company sent someone out who didn't understand the HVAC system that I had. This is an old system and they didn't repair this type of system. It was a waste of my time and I had to take another day off from work, so that was a negative.

Eventually, they got a contractor in here who knew how to replace the system. When they came in, one person was very seasoned and the other person was a trainee. There was a problem with the trainee. He turned the water on when it wasn't hooked up so it started flooding my closet and leaked down into my neighbor’s apartment. It wasn't a major leak, but the fact that all that happened was an inconvenience. The thing that saved it was the owner eventually came and showed up and completed the task. Two out of three people who came were very experienced and knew what they were doing.

Back then, it seemed like a good deal to acquire TotalProtect. It's easy to put up a claim though I prefer the old method of calling and talking to a person and discussing which contract they would give. Right now, someone's made the contract and I have to sign it. If I have a problem with the contract, I have to call and speak to a person. But that's the important thing, they give me the contract and it's up to me to contact TotalProtect and have them call a contractor for me. And all went smooth with the techs that came to my home. They come out and handle the problem. The air conditioning, hot water heater, and clothes dryers are going well. The quality of their work is all good.

If you didn’t use your contract, the washing machine and dryers would be handled by Sears or whoever they call there. With the water heater, they sent somebody out to look at it and decided I needed a new one. TotalProtect let me pick one myself and they'll reimburse me, so I got a new water heater myself. I've kept it for all these years because it's been convenient. If I got a problem, I only need to pick up the phone and call. Also, they're on the hook for six months on the same problem. If they don't get the problem right the first time, they keep trying until they get it right which is worthwhile.

In the end we paid 2 service fees to get estimates for HMS, they continued to stall until we finally paid one of the companies ourselves (verses continue in a hotel). At one point that actually insisted on ordering & shipping a hot water heater versus get one at a local facility. Sears came out and found out that it wasn't the washing machine that was broken but the drain line and it was because of that that the washing machine couldn't pump the water. They had a plumber come out and on the line they encountered a snake and broke something and water came out on the floor. However, they blamed it on someone else that maybe previously worked on the line. They said that it had been repaired before and had not been done properly, and that's what caused it to break. So, they didn't cover it.

Two weeks after they originally said they were not going to reimburse me for this plumbing issue, I received another call that said they actually would reimburse me. Two weeks after that phone call, I received a check in the mail. I am happy with their decision, the only negative would be how long it took to resolve my dispute.

    Original Review: May 13, 2016

Had a clog in my kitchen sink line between the kitchen and my basement utility tub. Called HMS and they sent out a plumber on a Friday who I have used before and has done a good job. He was able to relocate the clog from where it was located to downstream of the utility tub, but was unable to clear the clog from there on using a manual auger. My utility tub backed up, and I was unable to use the kitchen sink or washing machine for the weekend.

HMS took my $100 deductible then said the clog wouldn't be covered because it was below ground level and was caused by a foreign object. I said the clog started above ground, and it hadn't been determined what actually caused the clog (95% sure it was ground up food from the disposal), so they should send out another plumber for a second opinion. They refused, so I called another company myself because I needed the line cleared.

The other company was able to clear the clog using an electrically powered auger. (It was a tough clog, but it was still just an auger that cleared it.) The next day I submitted a dispute with HMS that it should have been covered because the warranty agreement says "clearing of stoppages using standard snake/auger systems" are covered. The automated email response said it would take three weeks to come to a decision, and it ended up taking over two months for them to deny my dispute. Their reasoning was that the second plumber used the electrically powered auger, which he referred to as a "machine" in his report.

Despite this being an argument over semantics as to what a "standard" auger system is, I am extremely disappointed in their lack of empathy / customer service as well as the convoluted procedure to come to a resolution on a dispute such as mine. Needless to say, I definitely DO NOT recommend wasting your $500 on an HMS warranty, and I will definitely not be renewing mine.

I had a claim maybe a month ago on my air conditioner and it turned out to be a fan up in the attic. The people sent were good. The second time turned into a disaster. I called in because I was having trouble with my water pressure. The technicians came out here and determined that it was the water softener. They said the problem was caused by the hard water going through the water softener and they wouldn’t cover it. But that's the reason for a water softener.

I know a lot of home warranty companies don’t cover certain things especially if it’s customer neglect. But I don’t see how there could be neglect on my water softener. There’s no way I can filter that hard water into a water softener. That’s what it’s for, and I paid extra for the water softener coverage. I’m planning to look somewhere else when I'm done with them this December. I don’t know what good it is to have a warranty that doesn’t cover such issue. The tech also commented that they can sell me a water softener for $2,200. It didn’t leave a good taste in my mouth. I’m very dissatisfied.

I submitted a work order request on 8May2016 @ 1945hrs. I was called the next day indicating a Mr. Donly ** would contact me to set up a time to come look at the hot water heater. He never did. I call TotalProtect and informed them and they gave me his number **. I called and said he was on his way to Memphis and couldn't get to me til Monday evening or Tuesday morning. I call TotalProtect again to see if there was someone else that could come out because I needed to take a shower as I am disabled and can't get in and out the tub. I was informed they had to wait for Mr. ** since he could be there that day or the next. He showed up unannounced at 1835hrs. He informed my wife that he would be back the next morning, he never did. I called him at 1300hrs and he told me he couldn't find the 50gal lowboy replacement water heater so I asked if a 40gal would do. He said I would if the insurance company would allow it. I received a called from TotalProtct and was told that I have two options: I could wait 3-5 more business days for the service provider to get one delivered, or I could take a contract credit. I asked how much the credit was and was told it was $852. So I asked how much was the repair/replace of the hot water heater. The service rep told me he would have to get a quote from Mr. **, but he wouldn't inform Mr. ** what the figure was that had been discussed with me. The service rep put me on hold and when he returned he informed me that Mr. ** estimate was $852...really. I went and priced the Electric 40gal Hot Water Heater at Lowe's (Same place Mr. ** had gone) and discovered that the water heater only cost $349. Really...so he was charging $852 (same as the contract credit) for a $349 water heater. The situation with the contract credit is that I would have to pay Mr. ** the $852 up front and get reimbursed within 2 days or so. I explained to the service rep that I didn't have that type of money so since I couldn't get the requested service, I would do it myself. After I purchased the water heater, I called TotalProtect back and asked to speak to a supervisor because someone is getting a kick-back on the service calls. The rep asked why I needed to speak to a supervisor and I explained the situation to him and what had happened. He covered it up and I couldn't speak to the supervisor. So I informed him that as of June 1, 2016, their services will no longer be required and I am canceling my contract with them and going with a different company . I believe they are a bunch of lying crooks that are ripping off the insurance companies and have people that they only work with that will give them a part of the kick-back. A $349 hot water heater that takes only about 30 minutes to replace, no lines have to be replaced, the water heater is very, very easily accessable, but it will cost $852...really.

I contacted Total Protect because my GE Refrigerator was leaking; it leaked so bad it damaged my floors to the point they needed to be replaced. Refrigerator part replace all is good. Well a few months later, refrigerator leaking again, floors getting wet, Total Protect called, part replaced. Next month, refrigerator leaking again, Tech now guessing what is wrong and just replace a part he think is the problem and stated "This is a very good refrigerator and GE have a lot of parts"; the very next week, refrigerator leaking again, now my floors swelling a little. Call Total Protect, get scheduled for GE again, the Tech calls me and says "I'm just going to replace the door; I'm having the part deliver to your call when you receive it". Go scheduled a week later 05/12/16, but in the meantime the refrigerator is still leaking, have towel to soak up the water. I'm so fed-up I request for a Supervisor to call me last week. Called today 05/11/16 and was informed that a Supervisor did call and left me a message. Checked phone and no message. Was informed that they couldn't give me the Supervisor number but will put in the system I called. REALLY. The Customer Service Rep stated "Total Protect is not responsible for consequence incidents. REALLY PEOPLE. My floors were replaced due to the leaking refrigerator and now you telling me you not responsible, most certainly you are. Stop putting a Band-Aid on the refrigerator and replace it. Now who is going to replace my swelled floor due the leaking? Still waiting for a call from one of there VERY BUSY Supervisors. I think I need a lawyer.

The claim process at TotalProtect was quick, easy and to the point. So far, I've had good technicians. However, there was one technician that I had a problem with wherein he was a bit aggressive. He worked on my air conditioner but he judged me based on my complexion and went too far, and I had to report him. So far, their reps helped handle the situation in a professional way. Overall, it was a really good experience. Every time I call whether or not I talk to a technician or go online to do my order, I'm always handled quickly. The turnaround is not too long for getting somebody to call me up and do the service. I would recommend TotalProtect to anybody and I would not be without it.

When I purchased the house, the owner had insurance with HMS Home Warranty and it was transferred over to my name. The home warranty company takes care of everything for me and I'm satisfied. Submitting a claim was very easy. I had someone come out and fix my oven and the work done was outstanding.
