I use Energy Ogre to find the best rates for me. They handle all renewals and cancellations. Now why would I be paying them, and renew on my own? They recently found a new provider and switch me over with my authorization, only to then find out that I was charged an early termination fee! I was told that back in March, I got a renewal email and used a promo code to renew my contract till 2026. I didn't get that email, let alone extend my contract till 2026! I have no physical documentation of this, and the customer support couldn't send me any documentation that this happened. Only that it shows in their system. And now I can't go back to Champion because I'm already with another provider (cheaper too), and if I cancel with them, I'll get ANOTHER early cancellation fee. You are running a scam. I've sent an email to customer support and if this fee isn't removed I'm filing a complaint with every Texas utility board I can find.

For my renewal, I checked out several web sites for the best KWH rates in Texas. There were many providers below Champion's 14.5 rate. I just got my renewal email and I asked the representative, if there was a price match or better price available. I have had Champion for I think 10 years, and I called to see why their per KWH was higher. It is so confusing to understand all the small print explanations given. I was explained all of the false claims by the others, to be cheaper by KWH. He told me, my bottom line price by Champion was still less.. I was also told Champion were a 5 Star rated company. So I went to BBB web site & this was their rating. Business Profile 1.67/5. Now after making my decision to stay, 1.67 star is a long way from 5 star?

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sorry if you felt you were misinformed about our star rating. Our customer care team is usually referring to our rating with the Public Utilities Commission of Texas (PUCT), the governing body for retail electricity providers. We do maintain our A+ rating with the BBB, but we agree the star rating from BBB reviews is below the level of service we aim to provide. If you have questions about your account our customer care teams are available 24/7 and you may reach us via email at feedback@champion.energy

I am disappointed in this energy company; they started off great, but I suppose that was just the upfront mask. I had them in 2021 during the winter storm, hardly did I pay the rates I pay now. Let me explain how frustrating and fraudulent they are. I was previously charged $318.26 because they said I did not "renew" even though I did. They said they would give me credit and take away the fees. They took out $176.06 on 8/31 and $285.03 on 10/02. That is a total of $464.09. I saw no "credit" but apparently it was added in, the bill does not reflect that. This is after the claimed that my payments were declined, which was a lie, only August did not go through because of THEM! That bill was for $142.19, so tell me how did we go from $142.19 to me paying $464.09 in total?

Then they proceeded to charge me 3 more times in November (11/01 $83.93, 11/21 $63.19, 11/30 $103.19). The weeks of those charged are, 10/31-11/18, 11/18 - 11/28, and then 11/28 -12/27. Then they charged me $138.48 on 12/27 and then $263.89 on 1/29. This is after they charged me $103.19 on 11/30 for 266kwh. But the previous bill, they charged me $63.19 for 396kwh. Mind you when I asked why was I charged the way I was and on the last bill of $96 for delivery charge, they said it goes based on the bill. You mean when we get "cold" weather, you take advantage? Nothing makes sense to me?

The issue that I am having is, it makes no sense with how my "auto" payment always disappears, they said I did not pay the previous bill so there is a fee, but another agent would say that I did. But the first person is correct, it shows I paid $138 on 1/15, but not the $103 that was due on 11/30, there is no history on their billing page. I checked my bank, and she is right, no charge. So, what they do is mess with your auto pay, charge you fees, including the delivery charge, and then claim that you used certain amount of kwh. And the crazy part is, they're never on the same page. They keep lying about your charges and claim you use so much, I have a camera just to document now that my unit is off when I am traveling. Me using the heat for 3 days when we had the cold front does not equal a bill of $300.

Also, pay attention to your bills and how much they charge based on KWH, it is never the same amount either, it is what they can get away with. In summer I was charged the $400 for using apparently 1,000-1,233 KWH. I also apparently used 1,838KWH from 12/27 and was charged $285.00. MAKE it make sense. I have ghosts living here using up this heat and AC. The first girl was correct, looking at my last bill, it said I had a previous balance. Clearly my bank shows I paid for it. The girl said I used $77 worth of energy during the cold front, and the week before that was $40. Pathetic, I am shopping around and will cancel. I rather pay the fee instead of playing games with corrupted people who gaslight and try to make you think you're dumb and do not see what you see on your own bills. They charged me 3 times in November. Why? Let's see what they will charge me when the AC stays off.

Anela, your usage is provided to Champion Energy from your transmission and distribution utility (TDU), which is Oncor. We'd be happy to review the usage information with you and can discuss how rates have changed since 2021, which impacts the total cost for electricity. You are on a fixed price plan with Champion, so your rate with us does not fluctuate during your contract year. The TDU rates change twice a year. They typically go up in September and decrease in March. Again, that delivery charge is from Oncor and also per kWh of power used. Multiple bills in November were related to your move and transfer of service. A member of our customer care team tried to reach you to talk about your account. You may email feedback@champion.energy with your phone number and a good time to reach you.

Full of nasty surprises, beware be warned! Solar buyback is a joke. They sell me energy at an exorbitant high rate like 17c/kW and buy the power that I generate from my solar panels for like 2c/kW! And then they blame this situation on ERCOT! Fleecing and scamming is what I would call it. I Installed my solar panels for $30,000 and so paying monthly loan payments of $150 on those, and here I am paying Champion for almost a full utility bill as much as I paid before I ever installed solar panels! All such a scam! Who made these Texas Solar buyback rules that are designed to scan the consumer?! I am so mad… and to break Champion's contract is $350. :(

Rizwan, thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding our solar buyback program. Many people who invested in solar last summer where also experiencing high energy rates at the same time, which is why it is hard to see what you are saving with your solar panels. The best value will always be the energy your home uses from your solar generation, not what you return to the grid. Generation used by your home means you are not drawing power from the grid and paying retail energy rates.

For example, if your home before solar used 20 kWh per day you are billed for 20 kWh. After solar, if your home still uses 20 kWh and your panels produce 5 kWh that your home uses and another 5 kWh that you return to the grid as surplus generation your billable kWh amount is 15 kWh. Plus, you earn a bill credit for the surplus 5 kWh at the indexed wholesale price in effect at the time it was returned to the grid. Please reach out to feedback@champion.energy if you have additional questions about solar.

Champion Energy Services has made solar buybacks a nightmare in my East Texas home. Many companies provide net metering for solar which gives you credit for energy that is returned to the grid at the same rate that you are charged. Champion Energy Services sells the energy to the customer at full retail of 15.4 cents per kwh and buys the energy that is produced by the solar panels at wholesale pricing which varies but is often exceptionally low. It has been sickening. I was paid 3.4 cents per kwh during December 2022 and was only paid 1.5 cents per kwh for January 2023. By the time you find out how bad their rates are for solar, you cannot get out of paying a $350 early termination fee.

      Response from Champion Energy Services

Maurice, thanks for sharing your feedback regarding our solar buyback. Champion Energy, like some other retail electricity providers, calculate solar buyback credits on the wholesale prices determined by ERCOT. The rates are subject to change in 15-minute intervals and seasonality also impacts the rates due to supply and demand. All of our residential electricity plans include solar buyback so you can choose the electricity plan that best meets your household needs, and still earn solar buyback credits. Some companies charge a premium energy rate or add a monthly fee to solar plans. If you'd like us to review your solar buyback credits in more detail please email feedback@champion.energy and provide your account number, address or phone number. Thanks!

I was with Champion for 3 years. Suddenly I found Champion egregiously overbilled me from June- July 2022 with a failure to disclose my change in rates. I filed a complaint with the Public Utility Commission and they were found to be in violation. The letter is available on their Google review.

I am a 70 year old lady who lives in a one bedroom apt. I have been here for ten years. At the beginning of the year I received help from a Charity to help pay my electric bill. They put a little over a 1000 dollars for the whole year on my electric account to pay my monthly payments. All of a sudden my bill doubled when they pledged the money. The first of July I started looking for another electric provider and I had a credit still on my account of around 800 dollars. Since I started looking for another provider my electric bill for a one bedroom for my July bill was 265.00. Is there a limit of the cost of electricity? They told me it was 24 cents per watt. I am being charged a variable rate because I have not renewed a contract. So am I being punished because I want commit to a contract. Unfair.

Been with Champion 8 years and have had good rates up until my renewal this year. I know rates have gone up but their prices almost tripled. I received a renewal rate of 17.3 cents for 12 months. I called customer service and the best they would offer is 17.2. They are giving their new customers 17.1 cents per kwh for 12 months. Loyalty means nothing to them. I will be switching providers. Champion is getting too big but that will change if they continue to treat their customers like this.
