How ADT works

ADT home security systems with professional installation include monitoring, which connects your alarm to a 24/7 monitoring center. If the alarm goes off, an operator will verify the issue and dispatch the appropriate emergency services. In addition to standard home security services, ADT also offers a variety of smart home equipment.

ADT offers several prebuilt packages that can be customized, or you can build a fully custom system. Each package includes an upfront equipment cost and a monthly monitoring fee. Professional installation is available for a fee, though customers can choose DIY installation through ADT Blu.

ADT monitoring plans

ADT offers three monitoring plans: Secure Monitoring, Smart Monitoring and Complete Monitoring. Most security system packages require a 36-month contract, but not all. Note that there are early termination fees if you want to cancel your contract early.

ADT cost

ADT home security packages range from $349 to $1,593.95, depending on the level of protection and smart home features you want. If you don’t want to pay in full upfront, ADT offers flexible payment options.

The Security Starter package is the most affordable option and focuses on intruder detection, while Life Safety adds protection against hazards like carbon monoxide. Midtier plans like Outdoor Video and Video Essentials include cameras and video doorbells. Front Door Protection adds a smart lock, and Total Safety is the most comprehensive package, with multiple cameras and environmental sensors.

ADT monthly monitoring cost

In addition to equipment costs, each plan requires a monthly monitoring fee, which starts at $24.99 but can be higher, depending on the package.

ADT security system packages

In addition to the equipment listed, all packages come with a base unit to control your monitoring devices, a yard sign and window stickers. You can also customize these plans or build a fully customized system from scratch.

ADT equipment

ADT offers a wide array of equipment, including traditional home security sensors, video cameras for indoor or outdoor use and even smart home devices. Some devices are made by third-party brands, with ADT providing system integration and monitoring.

ADT installation

ADT packages can be installed professionally or set up yourself. For those who choose professional installation, ADT charges a one-time fee that varies according to the package you get, the equipment you select and your location.

Professional installs are handled by technicians. This typically takes just a few hours. The tech will install your sensors and cameras, connect the base and test everything to make sure it works.

ADT warranties and guarantees

ADT offers several warranties and guarantees:

  • Theft Protection Guarantee: ADT pays up to $500 toward your insurance deductible if a burglary occurs while your system is armed. You’ll need to meet several additional requirements, such as filing an insurance claim within 60 days.
  • Six-month money-back guarantee: If ADT is unable to resolve any installation-related issues or issues with your system during the first six months, it will refund the installation price and pay all monitoring fees.
  • Limited equipment warranty: ADT repairs or replaces defective equipment parts at no cost during the first 90 days after your order date. You’ll need to meet several additional requirements, and labor or service visits may cost extra. You can purchase an optional protection plan for ongoing coverage after the initial period.

ADT FAQ

Where is ADT available?

ADT provides service in all 50 U.S. states and Canada. It has local offices in every state except North Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming.

How do I cancel ADT?

If you purchased your ADT system online, you should be able to cancel your monitoring online using one of the following methods:

  • MyADT: Go to myadt.com. Select “Account” then “Manage Subscriptions.” Fill out the cancellation form.
  • ADT+: Log in to ADT+, and then select “Billing,” then “Manage Subscriptions,” then “Cancel Subscription.” Fill out the form.

If you don’t see a cancellation form on these pages, you likely didn’t purchase the system online, and you’ll need to call to cancel. The number is 800-ADT-ASAP.

Does ADT require a contract?

ADT home security often requires a contract — but not always. In general, if you opt for professional installation, you’ll need to commit to a contract (usually 36 months). If you go with ADT Blu, you can purchase just one month.

Does ADT work if my internet goes down?

Generally, yes, your ADT system will still work without internet access. Most systems have a cellular backup for alarms. This generally only applies to monitoring — smart home devices typically need an internet connection to function.

Does ADT work during a power outage?

Yes, ADT can work during a power outage. While the systems typically run on AC power, most have a battery backup ranging from four hours to 24 hours. This will kick in during a power outage to keep you protected.

Still have questions?

Is ADT worth it?

ADT is a very solid home security option. It offers modern devices and reliable monitoring. While ADT tends to cost more than basic self-monitored systems, its pricing is typical for professionally installed security services. ADT can be a good option if you want full-service installation and ongoing monitoring.

ADT is especially good for buyers who don’t want to handle installation themselves, since professional setup can save time. Just review the contract terms carefully, as early termination fees can be significant.

In terms of customer experience, ADT customers are happy with the system’s reliability and effectiveness and appreciate the prompt and professional customer service. Overall, customers feel secure and satisfied with the service ADT provides.

However, customers have also expressed frustration with ADT’s contract terms, citing issues with cancellation, hidden fees and misleading information.

I've had ADT since 2017. I read an article and decided to sign up with a home warranty service called Choice. After I signed up, I got a call from them saying that, as a new customer, I was eligible to get a home security system. I said, "I have ADT." They said, "We deal with ADT." I said, "I actually tried contacting Vivint a couple of months ago because I liked the idea that you could know what was in your yard before it got to the walls or door of your house." But I was very dissatisfied with the service I got. Just the sales pitch was very dissatisfying. So, I dumped them. I said, "So they're off the table." I've barely heard of Guardian and I don't have any problem with ADT.

Choice said, "You can't cancel your current contract." I'm not even on contract anymore. "You can't quit ADT at what the price you're paying now and hook up with us a couple of days later and get ADT at our reduced prices." Because they quoted 59.99 for three years once the equipment was paid for, and it went down to 24.95. It's very nice prices. So I said, "Let me look into this."

The next day, I called ADT and the entry level guy who answered the phone said doing that sounded like a reasonable thing to do. I would expect Choice to say, yes, I could, and ADT to say, no, I couldn't, but it was reversed. So I asked him to get a second opinion and, rather than be the middleman, he forwarded me right on to a fellow named Jacob, who said he was at the corporate level. He was at least in a decision-making level and a level where he could access a lot of stuff to check things out.

He said, "We don't have a contract with Choice." So, I went on to cancel everything with Choice. They're out of the picture now. But he said we're still in the same conversation. I said, "I've been with you. I pay my bills, the whole bit. Any kind of incentive, loyalty, whatever discounts you can give me." He did not have a number for reducing my current payment, but he priced out if I upgraded and what that would entail.

I ran some numbers after I got off the phone with him and I priced it out for four years because I had to pay three years at 58 to pay for the equipment, and I could go down to their lesser price. I had to pay 58 plus 18. So the 18 would go away, and I would owe just 58. I priced it out and I was out $25 at the end of four years to be upgraded. I now had new stuff and I also don't know if my current price would have gone up in four years. It might well have. So let's call it a wash. But I would be upgraded. We started talking about upgrading and he said, "You got your smoke alarm and your carbon monoxide in 2019. They don't work anymore." I said, "What do you mean? They're blinking and you guys are charging me for the service." He said, "After five years, they're no good." I said, "You could have sent me a note."

Before I went with ADT, I bought one. This has got to be 15 years ago. I remember writing in red on the plastic at the top of the curve so I could see it when the expiration date was. There are no dates written on these two. So, I'm not protected. ADT could have sent an email. They should have that set up when they install something. They automatically send an email six months before it expires. I'm sitting here with a smoke alarm that doesn't work or is not effective and carbon monoxide. I told him at that point that I needed to clean up the Choice situation first, and I would get back to him. Choice was very honorable about it. They refunded me every penny within 24 hours. They probably just wanted to get rid of me. But that's why ADT has come up in the last couple of weeks.

I got nailed one day when a young guy came knocking at my door and started talking to me about ADT. My husband had died and I got talked into it. But it made sense to me, because I live alone, and it felt like it should be secure. The system is okay. I have one sensor that irks me a bit. It's a glass break system, and they installed it in my living room. I'm not sure why, because if somebody's going to break into my house, they will not break into my living room windows. But every time my storm door closes, even if there's not glass in it, when that storm door closes, I hear “Family glass break.” Irritating. That's a bit of a drawback.

I've always had very good experience with the techs or the agents that I spoke with. I have cellular failure issues with it that I called about one time, because it just beeps. ADT checked the system. Everything worked. So, I just live with the beep. It's okay. It works. I set it at night when I go to bed. I was gone in the summertime, and I turned my air conditioning off. But I love that a week before I was planning to come home, I could turn it on gradually. So, I didn't turn it on the day that I came home and had to drop it 20 degrees. I like being able to arm and disarm my system remotely.

I've had a couple of issues with it going off, and it shouldn't have but things happened. When I first got it, I tried to sneak out at the house in the morning before I fed my cats. I tried to sneak out to get a walk in. I did my walk, I came home, and there's a police car sitting in my neighborhood. I walked past and said, “Huh. Did I disarm that system? Probably not.” It happened another time when I went out to feed the cats in the morning. It was a couple years later. I was out in my yard and I heard the alarm going off. I ran like Usain Bolt trying to turn it off.

Recently, they set up this thing where they're supposed to text you. If your alarm goes off, they text you to let you know that it's going off. I didn't have a notification set up on that, so I didn't hear the text. I had left my home because I was going up to my mother's house. My phone was ringing, and I was driving. I don't answer the phone when I'm driving. I got to a stoplight, and looked. It was ADT and I was, “Oh, no.” I've had a couple of times, and I know it was my fault.

I called back and the woman said, "I'm with ADT. Your alarm went off.” I said, “Everything is fine. You don't need to call the police.” But she said, "We already have. I'll see if I can get them to cancel the call.” She was very pleasant. She made sure that I was okay.

I'm happy with the system. However, the billing needs improvement. Maybe they were so excited about whatever they're doing to the website. But I would like to have known ahead of time that I would be charged a bit more money. Two times in the years that I've been with them, they've raised my rate but have not notified me ahead of time. The first time it happened, I called. It was only $5, but I called. I said I didn't know it was going up. So, they dropped the $5 off. This last time, they had sent me several notices about the changes they were making to the MyADT website. I don't know what they were doing. I got my credit card bill, and my monthly fee had gone up $10. All they told me about was improvements to the website. I did the chat bot thing, and they dropped the $10 off. I said, "I don't like paying more for stuff, but I don't mind doing it if I know I'm gonna have to."

The thing is says, “We usually like to give our customers 30 days notice that it's gonna happen.” But I got no 30 days notice. I'm used to getting an email that tells me, "Your bill is ready to be charged, and it's gonna be this much money." A week and a half later, they charged it to my card. It tells me my bill is ready to be submitted a week and a half before. And it goes to my credit card. If they had done that this time, I would have said, "Crap. It's going up $10. Oh, well.” But they didn't notify me, and they've done that twice. I know that things go up. I know that things cost more.

ADT has been efficient. The functionality has been great. I've even been able to train my son at a young age how to use all of the functions. We switched from the key fob to now the app is on our phones. The four digit code is always easy to remember, because you can just pick something close to your heart. The updates seem to happen on the back end. I don't have to call a tech and say, “My system is malfunctioning.” Whatever they're doing at the main office is being taken care of.

The performance is amazing. Sometimes, I'm in the kitchen and I'm cooking, and it's not a fire. It's just smoke. The fact ADT calls me to make sure that we're okay first. Every time they call me, they reach out to my emergency contact as well. It's simultaneously, which is top tier for me. Because if I passed out, my emergency people will call me and say, "What's going on with you?” If they don't get me, they know to call ADT back and tell them to send someone to my home. That's above and beyond for me.

ADT makes me feel very safe. Long before they allowed people to conceal and carry, we had ADT as the police between police, and that is great. I believe that the people on my block and myself who have ADT have had less people try to vandalize our properties, even if we leave our garages open. I've left my garage open many times, but they see that I'm covered by ADT, so they assume that I have a camera. They assume that even though the garage is up, ADT is going to alert me, and they might end up getting locked in my garage. ADT is definitely the police in between the police. And it does put a little fear in criminals’ hearts.

I just recently changed over my system, and ADT has partnered with my insurance company. That is the smartest thing that any security system could do. You can get a contract for three years and they give you a discount because you're going the extra mile to take care of your home and that is very appreciated as a homeowner.

At one point, I fought with them every day. Some neighborhoods are overlooked. One of the techs came, and he started asking questions and found out a couple of things about me. People don't take pride in their homes. A lot of people feel bad because of the property tax, where you can't afford the minimum for the house. But that's not everybody's situation. The tech just gave me a bit of information. I had to fight with ADT a bit to get that for my home. As a loyal customer and someone who has been around for a long time, technical companies that sell phones, security systems, Geek Squad sometimes forget about the people who have been around for forever. And they are catering to people who just started. That's like giving your mistress more than you give your wife. Who does that in the beginning?

You're gonna give the mistress the house and you let the wife be in an apartment? That's not how you do. Technical companies do that a lot. Once they've already got you, they don't want to give you the discounts. You have to fight for the discounts. I understand that they need new business, but this old money. They feed into new money, and it's many systems out here on Amazon and SimpliSafe, and all of these people who don't give the quality service that ADT gives. But people will leave them for the one-time price of this or the one-time price for that. Being a homeowner, I have learned that it is better to be in a contract, and it is better to have a warranty than it is to not have a guarantee.

ADT's service has been very acceptable. I recently had an alarm in my house that was a false alarm. It was a glass break. They called the police because I was on a plane and they couldn't get ahold of me and my wife. They handled that call very well. The police responded and when I called them, they didn't want to give me the report 'cause they said they didn't know if I was a fake person. ADT tried to help me get the report. I ended up getting the police to come back to my house and check the backyard 'cause when they came, they only checked the front and one side.

I've added Google cameras. They just came and changed out one of the cameras 'cause the old one was corroded as I live by the ocean. The Google cameras were a nice addition, although I have Ring cameras that are every bit as good as Google. Also, the Google cameras are not ideal. If I do a hard reset on the modem, which needs to be done once in a while, again, I have to go out on the ladders to do that.

To reboot the Ring cameras is pretty simple but the process to reboot the Google cameras and put a password in is tedious and time consuming. Every time that I have to reboot, like if I get a new modem, I have to go up on a ladder and push a button on the cameras. The gentleman that installed them for ADT took the little barcode that you scan with the camera. He didn't leave it for me, and that was horrible. Now I have to go up and the numbers that I need off the cameras to do it are really small. I have to use a magnifying glass to read them, and I'm on a ladder and a 69-year old with a hip implant.

Another thing that I don't like about ADT at this point is the maintenance contract that I got in 2011 is supposed to replace any parts and include labor. At first, they did that for years, but they unilaterally one sided decided to change that contract and that's unethical and immoral. I had to pay $59, which was a bargain, for the camera that I had replaced because they did recognize I had that contract. Now, I have to replace my own battery. Before, I could call, and a technician would come out and replace the battery to the alarm system. They did that multiple times. But they also decided they didn't have to do it any longer. They got cheap.

Over the years, they've made it harder to get ahold of someone to get help. An example of that is after the new camera was installed, I needed a little bit more help over the phone. But they're going to an AI system that was absolutely not even close to being ready to roll out, and it beat me to death trying to get to a technician. They can do all the advertising in the world, on TV, but if they got an AI system that beats you to death when you need help, they'll lose more customers over that than they will anything. It would draw out a call that should have taken 10 minutes into an hour, and that's not exaggeration. It's giving them a black eye that I don't think they have the vaguest idea, because the people that are making these decisions are not the people on the front line. It's their executive management.

Outside of those, I'm pretty satisfied. In general, the system works very well. The skill level of the ladies over the phone was off the charts, and so was the young gentleman that came to my house last time. They were patient and professional. They got the right answer the first time, not having to call back a second time. For the market value, I could get comparable equipment with comparable service from other companies for less money. Compared to other companies, ADT is the highest in the industry. But their equipment is giving me a service that I need.

We've used ADT since we bought this specific house. It's been about 18 years now as a monitoring service and maintenance service on an existing alarm system. Historically, there hasn't been much contact with them. The system was pretty much bulletproof. There wasn't a lot of problems. In the course of 18 years, we called them for service four times. It was always handled promptly, whatever had worn out, because these things only last so long. The system would have been put in in 1998. Nothing broke that was concerning. It was just natural aging and wear and tear on the system. The service was always satisfactory, we got what we want, and the monitoring was always good.

When the alarm signals did go off, it was monitored, things worked as they should. If there was a fire alarm, the fire truck would show up. The police never showed up, because we'd always get a call. We answer the phone, we provide a code to prove it’s us, and it worked exactly as we'd expect it to work. This year, 2026, we completely updated the alarm system. So, we went from 27-year-old technology to state-of-the-art stuff. We got push button to touch pads, no cameras to five video cameras, and wired contacts that occasionally deteriorate or corrode to wireless. It was control on a phone app versus limited control on a keypad. We have all the controls on the phone. We lock and unlock from our phone, but we don't unlock and unlock the door. It's important to us because we have big dogs. So, we have to balance out, keeping them in mind when putting a system in. There has to be flexibility for home dogs in our home.

If I was going to put another alarm system in, knowing what I know now, I'd go with ADT, and I would recommend them to relatives and friends. There are people that do the home install themselves. One of the top brand names of alarm systems is ADT. If you want it to work and you want it done right with minimum hassle, you call ADT to come in. Customer service has been fine.

As far as monitoring fees, they're not budget. They're not the low-cost provider, but they are good value for money. The cost didn't affect us because we were getting what we wanted, even though it probably cost a little more than other monitoring services. In terms of the new install, it was expensive. It was 15,000 bucks for an all singing, all dancing system with five cameras and recorders.

We have no issues at all with them. The install team and the sales guy were first rate. We haven't had any problems since the system was installed. The cameras went in complicated but perfect. There was a couple of sloppy things, but they came out as soon as I found them and gave them a call. They were back within a couple of days and made it right immediately. You can't expect perfection, but if they fix it immediately, that's real good.

I have been with ADT for nearly forty years (1988 to present) on multiple properties over the years. Over the years I've been double billed and today I finally had enough. I found out that they were bundling a leased property for a family member, with my main house of 24 years. I called in Nov-2022 to cancel the service when she moved out, and they told me they see the call, but I didn't talk to the right person.

Fast forward, they've been charging me $80 per month for 45 months. That's $3,600 for a property we haven't been in since Q4-2022. Bottom line they won't credit that back to me and offered me $150 LOL. I said, keep it! And cancelled a 40 year relationship on three properties. I was literally about to add to more short term rental properties and they don't care. I will NEVER be using them again! With AI and more evolved companies, we don't need them like we used to, but they are acting like we do and they are not appreciative of the relationship. They will continue to lose market share and ultimately go out of business.

They do not require a written cancellation, only a call. They are trying to get out of refunding me thousands of dollars so now I will have to file a small claims complaint and deal with this. If I could give negative stars I would.

I ordered ADT for my new home back in December 2025 because I was told it would include the installation of the alarm and a Google camera. Needless to say, I signed the contract, and I received the installation of the alarm, but they could not install the camera at the top of my move because I had no Internet service. When my Internet was installed, I called to have them come back out to install the camera. After three attempts, ranging from canceled appointment, bad weather, etc. and ADT Van came to the appointment, but due to drizzle, refused to install the camera.

When I became upset and called the corporate office, he then ask had I received the Camera in the mail, to which I replied no; I wasn’t aware that I was supposed to have the camera, as a month and a half had already passed and no one mentioned that a camera was supposed to be present; I thought the installer would bring the camera. He shared with me that they were supposed to send the camera weeks in advance before his scheduled appointment. Each time that I called ADT to complain to inquire, they promised me they would look into the situation and begged me not to cancel and to give them a chance to investigate, and they would get back with me.

In good faith, I agreed. The last straw was after three months of no camera; I called to cancel completely, at which time they begged me not to cancel. Because I insisted, they told me I would be on the hook for the full contract of 900-something dollars. It has been 30 days, and I have reported them to the Better Business Bureau, and now I have received a collections notice. I am going to fight this. If anyone has a class action suit or has experienced a similar situation with them, please contact me. It seems that ADT is fraudulent in their services and practices. I am warning everyone that I know to stay far away. They are in breach of contract and fair business practices.

I am writing about the attempts I made to buy a new battery. First, I am tired of talking machines and AI. Do any corporations give a damn about ACTUAL customer service? Second, I have had problems with people rifling my mail so I asked if there was a PHYSICAL store I could go to to buy a 2 x 16 battery here in Decatur, AL. Apparently not. ADT YOU'RE FIRED!!!

I am using ADT home security system from one year. I recently changed my WiFi so I need to reconnect my cameras. When I try to do it myself it’s very difficult to set up and I tried to call customer service. There is no response from the customer service. It take two days to get a virtual service appointment. And for in person consultant service they are charging $150.00 for 30 minutes. That’s too much. Very poor service from ADT. I recommend don’t take ADT home security system.
