Last week I spoke with a young girl called Jess at the North Academy 24 Hour Fitness. She promised she would get back to me via email the next Monday. Tuesday I call in to speak with her and am told a lie that she is out on a business meeting all week. I call back and ask to speak with the operations manager. I get Aila on the phone who gives me the perception of a totally unsympathetic individual who wants to be left alone and is offended by any complaints received about employees at her site. My beef was that Jess promised to get back to me via email on Monday.
The truth was she was out because of an illness in the family and the fact that Aila told me "She does not have her appointments written down anywhere." Aila said: "Jess ran the whole operation." So, the truth is if Jess disappears then her customers suffer as no one else knows of what commitments Jess made. My real point is that young people run the operation and consider themselves experts but lack the basic customer service skills needed to communicate effectively with their customers. The young folks make excuses instead of apologizing for their aberrant behavior.

172% increase in my "lifetime" dues! Called customer service and she tried to tell me that I was given misinformation. I told her that there a lots of customers on the Consumer Affairs website who apparently were given the exact same misinformation in more than one state. So it's clear that the sales counselors are "told" to say this to sell the memberships and that directive is coming from corporate all the way down the chain. She did tell me that they are receiving lots of calls about misinformation that the customers are receiving and that they are calling each club (only after a customer complains) to tell them that they shouldn't say that. The total amortized cost of my membership just went up to $10 per month. That is the same monthly cost as the brand new Fitness Evolution club down the street. So goodbye 24 Hour Fitness.

Hello. When I first enrolled in my 24 Hour Fitness membership in 2007, I paid $700 dollars (approximate) up front. By doing so, I would be locked in at $29.00 dollars a year. I've been told verbally that it was guaranteed. Now, I noticed that my renewal fee is $84.00 (approximate) dollars. Now, after carefully reviewing the contract, I noticed that 24 hour fitness can raise my fees, which are printed in the small print possible. As a matter of fact, is the smallest print on the contract and it states it as such on Page 2, Section 3, SubSection 3(c), last sentence. I am very disgusted at this sales pitch tactic. This company has misled me in believing that I had a killer deal. I should had listened to my gut feeling at the time of signing the contract. BUYERS BEWARE!

Add me to the list of the dissatisfied. I paid a lump sum of $600 in 2006. I was told I would only pay $79 per year after that. I just got my annual renewal for $129! The manager at my local gym said they have received a lot of complaints about this. I called the corporate office and they weren't willing to change it. They said they "don't plan to increase it again," but weren't willing to put that in writing.

In November of 2007, if I'm not mistaken, I went to the Manhattan Beach 24 Hour Fitness and paid hundreds of dollars upfront and was promised a yearly $29 membership. They recently e-mailed me that it would increase and also sent me a bill for $79, which is unacceptable. What will it be next? Hundreds of dollars in increase? The principle and dishonesty will not be accepted.
I called them - 866-726-4497 (Flood them with calls and complaints!). They said Clause 3C states that they can raise rates if they need to. I still have my contract. I can double check the verbiage. Also, mail them: 24 Hour Fitness, Member Services, PO Box 2689 Carlsbad, CA 92018 (Flood them with complaints!). Who will be our lawyer? Who can find a lawyer who will take this on? Is there already a firm working on this case? I will personally make the phone calls if I have to. This is disgusting behavior. It's time for a lawsuit. And it is so because companies partake in disgustingly dishonest and misleading behavior.

As with the rest I had a lifetime annual rate of $30. With no notice I got a statement for $130. The local location claimed two letters were sent to me about it however all I received was the new statement. I don't have my original contract I signed 8 years ago however I distinctly remember being told as long as I was a member in good standing my rate would not change after paying the significant upfront cost.

I purchased a membership with 24 Hour fitness in 2006, I paid a large sum upfront for 3 years and a guaranteed lifetime renewal of $29 per year. For the past several years I have paid the $29 plus tax with no problems. This year I received no bill and when I went to check in for a workout they told me I owe $139 for this year. I explained that I had a locked in yearly rate of $29 and was told that they had to increase the rates for upgrades. I have been going to this gym since 2004 so even before I bought the prepaid membership, the same equipment is there now that was there in 2004. One summer they closed for and extended amount of time to "renovate" the gym. After more than a month we were all surprised that they put the same equipment back in, we did not receive any credit for the lost time while the gym was closed. So I don't think it's for upgrades to the gym. If there is a class action suit I would love to be in it.

Same as everyone else. I purchased a membership, prepaying for 3 years for $600, with the promise that it would be $99/year after that FOR LIFE or FOR AS LONG AS I KEPT MY MEMBERSHIP. That was what they swore by when they sold the membership. Sounded like a great deal, so I signed up. Now they send a letter saying 'Sorry, we have to raise your rate to $150/year.' I emailed Customer Service, didn't get a reply back for 3 weeks, then in the reply they sent me the contract and said 'Sorry, not sorry.' I replied again but never heard back. Memberships and gyms are supposed to increase health - it should be in their core values. This stress and frustration they've caused everyone with their bad business practices has done the opposite. What a company.

Not only did I buy a lifetime membership by paying a large sum up front that was supposed to renew at $29 a year, but I used to work in sales at 24 Hour Fitness back when in college and we were trained to tell people this is the price they would pay for the rest of their lives, hence "lifetime," which is why I also bought myself. They increased my dues this year to 79 a year and claim it is to keep the gym clean when our gym is actually pretty disgusting, at least in the bathrooms.
Also, the paper towel dispensers are often empty while 3 employees sit at the front counter socializing and playing on their phones and a few days ago my friend found a random bolt on the ground that we can only assume belongs to one of the pieces of equipment. Lastly, before I signed up I was told they were going to replace the treadmills and 6 years or so later the same crappy treadmills are still being used. These treadmills stutter and can’t maintain a constant speed, which is a health risk in and of itself.

Both my wife and I prepaid 3 years of memberships, a couple thousand dollars, for the assurance of a fixed low rate that would not be raised. This year our membership was doubled from $49 to $99. The fixed annual rate for the lifetime of the membership was a major factor in our decision.

24 Hour Fitness staff sells promotions and misleads people to join with empty promises. I bought a prepaid annual membership in 2008 to where I paid a lump sum and was not billed again for three years. Once my three years was up I was told I would pay $99/yr. and it would remain this amount and could not go up. Now in 2015 I received a bill for $199. This is 100% markup, double my annual renewal. I went into the gym to speak to someone since I couldn't reach a live body on the 24 Hour Fitness 1-800 number. The managers told me there was a clause, nothing they could do, and that was that.
How can the STAFF at 24 sell a product one way and corporate sells it another by hiding a clause in a contract? Last time I checked most Americans aren't lawyers who read through each line of an agreement. When promotions are presented and explained in a verbal manner to the consumer 24 Hour Fitness should honor that agreement. These pre-paid annual memberships should be grandfathered. Bad business practices by 24 Hour Fitness. Shame on you.

Please everyone file a complaint against 24 Hour Fitness. I signed up with 24 Hr Fitness in 2001 and have been a member ever since. My renewal dues went from $99 to $149 this year. I called Member Services (waiting on the line for 30 minutes) and spoke to a representative who told me that my membership lapsed in 2007 and that I entered into a new contract in 2007 that allows 24 Hr Fitness to unilaterally increase my annual fee. The 2007 contract that is available to me online is unsigned by me - that is because my membership never lapsed and I never signed a different contract than the one in 2001!!
This switching of the contract is an outright intentional attempt to get out of the agreement made in 2001 which does not allow 24 Hour Fitness to increase my membership. I find this outrageous. I have requested a copy of the 2001 contract from 24 Hour but, based on the complaints I am reading on this website, I doubt it will ever be sent. I am hopeful that I can locate a record of my payment to 24 Hour in 2007 to prove that my membership did not lapse. I will not let this issue go!

When I called to inquire about the increase I was told by Daniel in Customer Retention that I could be paying a lot more, other clubs were hundreds of dollars more. A deal is a deal 24 Hour Fitness. To get people to sign up they guaranteed a fixed rate, did not supply a copy of the contract, showed me "on the computer" that the rate was fixed. I had to create an account just to vent about this ridiculous company. Like many others my "locked-in rate" went from 29 to 79 a year after 650 down. I have been a member for more than 10 years. It's extremely disappointing that they are scamming current yearly members by building new gym as super sports and closing down gyms that I can actually use like sport or active clubs. They are basically wanting me to pay them 40 a month now. It was a long term bait and switch scam. So disappointed! Don't trust this company to live up to their agreements.

Oct 2015 I received a bill saying it had become necessary to increase my annual renewal amount to 124.00/year. I had planned to renew my membership and was always happy and felt like I had made a good decision and then my eyes almost popped out when I saw that they raised the cost to $124/year. It is not right that some people are paying less and some are paying more and we all had the promise of the nominal yearly fee. They cheated us and are not honoring the pioneering members who forked over the large sum early on because of our love for the up and coming national gym. They are really jerking me around here, and I feel angry just thinking about it. Are they playing favorites too? My friend has the same agreement and is still paying $50/yr. Just another dissatisfied customer. Bought several 3-year memberships shortly after this club opened. Was absolutely told about the lifetime renewals for $49 a year after the first 3 years. I had missed the $29 renewals and was excited to pick this deal up. At the time, I had very little money but made the substantial upfront expenditure based on future value. Apparently, the joke is on us. I was amazed to see my $49 renewal shoot up to $164, over 300% increase. Never once did I hear a mention of this possibility in the pitch that was laced with phrases like "locked in" and "guaranteed for life" etc. Even if 24 Hour Fitness does have some clause buried in the back of the contract to support these actions, this is patently false advertising that is, and has been perpetrated on 24 Hour Fitness customers from the start.
This is the sort of systemic, unprincipled "business" practice that the public needs to be protected from. It is hard to explain to my kids how our government specifically and society in general can tacitly approve of this shady style of subterfuge. Now I have to pay $100 a year. I would gladly join a lawsuit. Then my local 24 was running a promotion to upgrade memberships for $0 down and $10 added to membership fees per month. All the new 24 hour fitness popping up in So Cal are either Ultra or Super Sports (i.e. If I want to go to a 24 hour fitness I have to go to the old 24 hour fitness gyms).
For an extra $10 a month to me it would be worth being able to go to more gyms. The employee was nice and looked at my account... Because I have a grandfathered account I wouldn't be able to get the $10 a month deal. How much would it cost you ask? $39 a month (that's REGULAR PRICE). I told her that was crazy. I was told that my pass gives me access to a select few super sports. I feel like I should have access to more than that for them hiking the prices up. Everyone that I have talked to about this has paid a different amount, no 2 amounts are ever the same. 24 Hour Fitness is just in the business of selling memberships, they don't care if there are 500 people trying to work out at the same time otherwise my gym is poorly maintained. I know they're trying to phase out cheap long-term memberships in favor of more lucrative monthly contracts... I noticed last week that I was no longer being charged the $32.00 a month for my membership that I started back in 2010. I hadn't noticed that my membership had been cancelled because I was not able to go to the gym for about 8 months, due to some unfortunate health problems. I called today to speak with a representative and he told me that they were unable to charge the credit card I had on file for my monthly dues back in February, when the credit card they had given me was indeed valid. I even spoke to a supervisor and she said there is nothing that can be done to reinstate my membership and now the memberships are at least double what I was paying before.
While on the phone with her, I checked the history of my bank account and never saw any attempted charges for the months they said they tried to run the payment through. With my bank account, I have overdraft protection so even if I did not have the funds, it still would have been paid. I think that this is very sketchy and is a way for them to cancel out old (non-profitable) memberships, especially the ones that may not be used often. This is not about Fox news, but about having the right to watch a television stations). When she goes to the gym, she requests to have it on one of the TV screens. Recently, my mother was denied to have one TV screen for her to watch Fox news while she walks on the treadmill. According to her, there were a few employees that would not change the TV channel for her. The gym's policy is that patrons must request to change a TV station and are not allowed to touch the TVs. She was following the gym's protocol by asking, not to mention she's in her 70's. One employee told her that they could not change one TV station because of sports. Evidence to the contrary exists when other TVs are on entertainment channels.
Other employees made excuses why they could not change one TV to Fox news for her. After a few times of employees telling her that she couldn't watch Fox news, she went to the manager. The manager told her that they would not change one TV to Fox news. My mother then asked for the corporate office phone number and whom she could speak with. The manager on shift wouldn't give her the phone number and would not tell her the name of someone she could speak with at the 24 Hour Fitness corporate office. My mother had to call information to get the information she needed. She called to speak with someone and was told that the employees at the 24 Hour Fitness in Chino Hills could easily take a few minutes to change one TV to Fox news while my mother worked out on a treadmill. My mother went back to the gym and the manager was there.
She told him that she had spoken to his manager at the corporate office and that they needed to show more respect to their elderly customers. According to my mother, the manager became angry and asked her to leave. My mother said she would not leave and because she paid to be there, she felt she was entitled to use the gym. The manager threatened to call the police, and my mother told the manager to go ahead and call them because she felt that she did nothing wrong. The police came. A crowd gathered. The manager had told the police that my mother, an elderly Asian woman who simply wanted one television station changed to Fox news while she worked out, had threatened him. According to my mother, this gentleman was ** in his 30s. The police took the report, and one policeman had told my mother to go to another gym (even though she had already paid her membership to 24 Hour Fitness).
So now my mother has a police report, all because the employees of 24 Hour Fitness in Chino Hills would not change the channel of one TV for an elderly Asian woman. Personally, I don't have time to watch TV. When I visit my parents, they typically have Fox news on. However, this is an explicit demonstration of poor customer service. My mother said that she felt discriminated against because she's elderly, Asian, and a woman. All this trouble could've been avoided if the employees simply took 2 minutes to help someone. I wanted to e-mail you because this woman stood up for her rights and loves your TV station.

Just like many people on this board, in 2006 we paid $1,200 up front and were also told our annual membership would be $49 thereafter and never go up again. But, today we got a bill with 50% jump and no early notice. Also, suddenly, we could not go to another alternate gym that is close to our house due to the recent "upgrade of gym to Super Sport". We asked the front desk people what did they do to improve the gym, they said "nothing". Okay, so no improvement but the company decided to change status so we can not go to that gym anymore and closed up another gym's pool facility for a "renovation" during summer time.
I also called customer service and they told me they will put in a request to the "recently" upgrade facility manager to contact me and change our membership so we can continue to be able to use that facility. No answer from them. I guess the company is getting greedy and doing everything they can to scam people. I would like to know how many people actually renew their membership because we are thinking not to renewal with them and look into other gym's membership. Also, I encourage everyone to post on www.bbb.org. Let them answer the complaints so other people can review it.

Received a letter dated September 17, 2015 that my rate will be increased to $124.00. Seems like fraud to me if verbally they say one thing and contractually written they say another. And since this happened to us systematic across many states and facilities, seems that employees were trained to pitch this deal in this way. $124 is still a great deal, but it is the principle of 24 Hour Fitness as a corporate entity deceiving and misleading consumers.

Given what I've read, it would appear 24 Hour Fitness is strategically dumping "toxic" assets i.e. contracts not producing revenue (yours and mine). It seems some people are having fees raised a little, others a lot and other people just aren't getting billed. If they can dump enough contracts in enough ways it makes a CAL more difficult to pursue. Bottom line this company sucks at customer service. Similar story, 2005 paid for 3-year membership $750 then "lifetime" $99. They stopped sending me bills in 2013.Twice I paid it. At the check in desk both times I updated my address. I went in the other day to use the gym and was told my membership was terminated. I tried to call corporate. They have a new policy about reopening contracts.

WISH I COULD GIVE IT ZERO STARS!!! This review is about 24-hour Fitness' Customer Service in general. For over a year, I have been trying to get my problem resolved - unsuccessfully. I have been a member since April 22, 1993 when I purchased a "Family Keep Fit" membership. At that time there were 3 of us on that membership: Myself: Contract #**, my husband, John Contract #**, my son, Jonathan Contract #**. On July 22, 1996, I added my youngest son, Christopher -- Contract #**. His contract clearly stated that his contract was related to mine. I paid a monthly VISA charge of $19.00 ($12.67 + 6.33) for the first 3 contracts and when Christopher was added on, an additional $5.00 per month was added on to my VISA.
When Christopher tried to use his card at the Club recently, he was denied entry because they told him his account had not been paid since 2010! When I checked my credit card statements, I saw that everything was fine through 2009, however, beginning in January 2010 the $5.00 charge for Christopher's membership simply dropped off the bill. No notification was given to me at that time and I did not request any kind of a cancellation. When I talked to your Corporate Office's Member Services this afternoon, they said the $5.00 charge in January 2010 was denied. How can this be? The monthly charges of $12.67 and $6.33 went through without any problem and have continued to go through to the present time. Shouldn't I have been notified in 2010 when this was a problem?
I am not sure who to blame for this problem, but I feel their billing department should have noticed that my VISA card was good for the other charges as they are all put through on the same date and all the contract numbers are linked to one another and would have attempted to at least notify me that there was a problem. As I said, Christopher's contract clearly states that it was related to the original contract.
I had asked to have Christopher's membership re-instated. I am, of course, willing to make up the $5.00 monthly payments from the time they stopped being charged to my VISA. Corporate Office's Members Services indicated that since it had been more than 6 months since the account was cancelled, they could not re-instate it. We have been satisfied customers for over 20 years up to this point in time - I would think they would like to keep us. This should never have happened.

After reading on this site I found out there was some microscopic print on page 3 that somehow allowed them to break all those promises. I never even received a page 3. Tried to contact their "customer service" a number of times (the recording said "Your wait will be over 30 minutes.") and never able to actually connect to anyone other than their phone computer. When I came back the day after the remodel was complete, I went into the locker room to use the restroom. There was stuff in the toilet, so I flushed it. Water started flying out of the top and nearly got me soaked. After moving to a different stall, I finished my business, went to wash my hands and the hand soap was just laid out on the sink, not even attached to the wall. Then when I went to get a locker, the only area not riddled with locks, only had 4 posts where a bench was supposed to be. My Bally's in San Leandro, CA converted to a 24-Hour Fitness in Dec 2014. My membership with Bally's was for the 2014 calendar year only, so in Feb 2015 I met with a manager (whose card I have) and negotiated a month-to-month membership for $24.99 a month. I signed the signature pad thinking it was only for the credit card charge for the initial month. I did not expect to have a contract because it was month to month. I could check the charge every month to make sure it was right. On August 9 or so I noticed a $29.99 charge by 24-Hour Fitness along with a large fraudulent charge to a Safeway 40 miles away. I thought both to be charges by other people and reported to fraudulent charges to my credit card company.
Come Sep 29, when checking in for a workout, I'm told to see receptionist, who informs me that my annual fee is 53 days late. Of course, I say I have no annual fee. She says something like there were several annual fees that were not charged and so were charged on Aug 8. I meet with a manager. I ask to see the contract, forgetting that there was no contract. He shows me the annual fee on the contract. I don't have my wallet, so he says to just pay it next time. I leave to workout, then realize that I had signed a signature pad when I signed up. I'm pretty fanatical about actually reading contracts carefully when I have them, so I'm thinking there was no contract, so I go back and ask for a copy of the contract, which the manager provides.
The upstart: The original manager who signed me up, who was gone from the gym within 3 months of my signing up, had superimposed my signature pad signature onto a 5 page contract. That contract was never shown to me before I signed the signature pad, and no copy was provided me after I left the signing. They did not provide a credit card receipt, but at the time I didn't think of it. I knew a charge would appear on my credit card statement, and it would either be right or wrong. As it was, the credit card charge showed up as $50.87, which I questioned. Turns out it was for first and last month, and a prorated 1-day charge. I did not question it because I thought it was probably discussed, but that I didn't remember the detail.
That contract he printed out is a 12-month contract, with the $330 or so price listed as financed. It includes the annual fee of $29.99, but that it would be paid on Aug 8, 2015. Besides illegally putting my signature on a contract, I question whether that contract was even generated at that Feb 24 meeting. What company would charge an annual fee not at the beginning of the year, not at the end of the year, not in connection with any calendar year, but instead 'kind of' in the middle of the year? This is also suggested by the remark the receptionist said (above) when I first questioned the annual charge.
The signature pads they use have no other text displayed. They are only an empty field to sign. Why would they use such signature pads if they are not to defraud customers in the way I have described? There is no reason not to sign a paper contract when joining at the club. If the charge is only for a credit card charge, then a receipt should be offered. Of course, the contract has various other conditions in small print. I would like 24-Hour Fitness to hurt for doing this practice, but have been advised by a lawyer friend that it likely isn't worth the time or expense for the amount of money in the fraudulent contract. I would like them not to do this practice to others, and I'd like to know if others have had the same experience. From reading on this site, it appears 24-Hour Fitness defrauds in a variety of ways.

About 2 months ago I spoke to the Club Manager and requested that my membership be cancelled after being a member for 5 years. He said that he understood my request but would rather freeze my status for 2 months in case I wanted to reactivate my status. The reason for leaving is that my dues were about 32.00 per month until about 18 months ago. At that time, I upgraded to super membership in order to go to the Auto Mall location which has a swim pool. My monthly dues then increased to 42.00 per month which is on an auto pay status. My reason for resigning is that the club staff do not circulate on the workout floor and assist members with technique or other pertinent areas that are part of body building/toning.
Today (9-26-2015) I visited the club around 2:30 PM. Receptionist informed me that there were no membership staff or club management personnel on duty. She further said she had the authority to cancel my membership but rather would report my concerns to management. I have joined another club that is more focused on teaching, observing, being available to members. The 24 Hour Fitness does not provide written programs. Members are out on their own too much and usually are sitting at the membership desks even when they are not busy. They need to have a more serious focus on health and body for members.
I have made 2 attempts in getting membership cancelled and both times I was not successful. First time, the manager was cooperative but today left me without a definitive result. I am writing this e-mail and want membership cancelled since I feel the club is too focused on sales. Once the member has joined there is no exchange of knowledge and skills that pertain to the program which is not written up. The member needs to assume this responsibility. Please feel free to call for further questions/comments. Corporate needs to be aware of my observations and possibly revisit the approach that is currently in practice.

This month I received a letter that my rate will be changing to $100 per year. The back of that agreement has solely 1 section addressing membership increases. The section reads "24 Hour may increase your dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than 5% of your monthly dues." This is meant for people on a month-to month rate. As far as my contract states with 24 Hour Fitness my $49 renewal should continue. I called College Grove for comment. I was told that the rate increase was an "annual fee" that is being used to update and maintain all of the gyms. I searched my contract for language on "annual fees." There is none.
I was told by the manager ** that I "didn't understand the difference" and was told that I had the option to not renew. I understand that, I told her, but that would negate my investment of $1000 at the beginning to secure this rate. I want 24 Hour Fitness to acknowledge that coining a rate increase of 100% an "annual fee" is misleading. I would like to receive my agreed upon rate of $49/year (with a 5% increase if needed, per the contract) and hope that people who put so much money up front to secure a lifetime fee would have the loyalty of their organization to follow through on long-term agreements. Changes of long-term agreements should not be reached arbitrarily and unilaterally especially through transfer of ownership. The members are the ones who suffer through this.

However, I save everything. Here is the exact language in paragraph 3(c) from 2004: 3(c). "Rights to Increase dues: If you have a monthly membership, 24 Hour may increase your monthly dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than three percent (3%) of your then current monthly dues. Any such increase will not occur during the first three (3) months of your membership. Your EFT Date will not change. If you have a prepaid membership, 24 Hour will not increase your Guaranteed Annual Renewal Amount on the front page of this Agreement, so long as you remain a member in good standing." If there is a class action lawsuit I would like info. I will also contact my lawyer and ask what recourse I have against this.

I received an annual renewal email from 24 Hour Fitness recently and when I went to pay, I noticed that my annual renewal went from $49 a year to $124. I called customer service and was put on hold for 30 minutes. The representative who answered explained to me that they're "making renovations" and Section 3c said that they could increase my membership fees. That's not how it was explained to me when I signed up. I was promised that if I paid upfront for 3 years, that I'd have a lifetime membership rate of $49/year.
I asked to talk to someone higher up and was transferred to "Johnny," Employee ID: **, but he sounded like just another person in the busy call center. I told him that I was concerned that there's nothing stopping 24 Hour Fitness from increasing my annual membership to $10,000/year if they decide that they need to buy a private jet for every gym location. He said that Corporate has known about this increase for years now and that I didn't have to worry about anything like that. So I asked him how long I'd have $124/year rate for and he didn't have an answer.
Johnny also tried to explain to me that the contract did not say that I'd have a $49/year lifetime membership. It says that I'd have a lifetime active membership as long as I paid every year. That didn't make any sense whatsoever. Who signs up for a lifetime membership knowing that the terms could change every year? Johnny said that I could contact corporate by writing them a letter to P.O. Box 2689, Carlsbad, CA 92018. Maybe I'd be more understanding if I was notified in advance and new guarantees were made about my new rate, but now I just feel cheated, lied to, and **. $124/year is still a great rate, but how long is that going to last? I'm apprehensive about continuing my membership.

Just adding to the chorus here that I feel scammed by 24 Hour Fitness. I bought a "lifetime" membership in 2007 by paying a huge upfront amount and was told that I would pay $49 per year after 3 years. I just received my renewal letter stating that it has raised to $99 per year. I would not have purchased this plan had I known that 24 Hour Fitness could raise their "locked in" fee whenever they wanted. How do I know that the price will not double again without warning? Even though they inserted some legalese in the contract stating that they could raise the price, doubling the price without warning seems very unethical. I can't imagine that there are many of these memberships out there. The company should just grandfather our accounts lest this become a legal nightmare for them.

Like most others I read here, I bought a prepaid membership at my local 24 Hour Fitness in 2006, the Prepaid Membership fee was $700 for the 1st 3 years, then, $49/year after that for my Prepaid Initial Annual Renewal Amount. My bill had been $53.02. At that time, it was explained to me, that the extra expense of $4.03 was taxes. This year, I received my annual renewal notice for $107.32. I have not been able to get through to Corporate, as all lines are busy with OVER 30 minute hold time. I went in & spoke with the Club Manager. We went over my contract. She explained that 24 Hour Fitness increased my dues 3% for every month for the past 6 years. I argued that I do not have a monthly contract. Anyways, she said there was nothing she could. The wording on the contract is as follows:
"3(c). Right to Increase Dues: If you have a monthly membership, 24 Hour may increase your monthly dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than 3% of your then current monthly dues. Any such increase will not be calculated during the first 3 months of your membership. Your EFT date will not change. If you have a prepaid membership, 24 Hour will not increase your Initial Annual Renewal Amount on page 1 of this agreement, but may increase all subsequent annual renewal amounts. 24 Hour will send you notice of your new annual renewal amount each year thereafter prior to the end of your current term." If anyone is inquiring about a Class Action suit against 24 Hour Fitness, please count me in! Doubling my annual renewal amount is unacceptable!

I was like a lot of other member who sign up for the promotion, paying $1000 for the first three year and 29 dollar after that for life. That is what the staff at 24 hour fitness told me, and did not say anything about they can increase any amount and any time they want. Every year since 2007 I pay for the 29 dollar on time. I can understand they increase the membership by 10% or max 20% but this year they increase my membership over 150%. I went to the club. The manager told me they could not do anything. I call the company and have to wait a long time for them to answer. They told me rudely that I have to pay it or they will cancel my membership. So from what I am understand is 24 hour fitness don't need to care about the agreement and just lie to member and get them sign up first and then raise their membership anytime they want. What kind of company is this?

McCardle vs 24 Hour Fitness ruled against 24 Hour Fitness. They sold "All Club" Memberships and "All Sport" memberships. They later opened clubs and excluded those members from those clubs, requiring them to upgrade in order to use them. In California, they lost the case and were required to allow everyone access to "All" Clubs, using the dictionary definition not 24 Hour Fitness' definition. In Colorado, members with "All Club" memberships are also excluded from "Super Sport" locations. The difference in these new gyms is apparently towel service. In Colorado, these new clubs have been opened in Highlands Ranch and Parker -- suburbs of Denver. While inner city Denver still has access only to the older clubs, even with their "All Club" memberships.

Although my experience of the club was fair, if pricey for the product, my experience after I couldn't use their club has been horrendous. My family and I moved out of state, over 50 miles from the nearest club. We tried calling the club in advance to cancel the membership (about a month early) so we'd know what was needed and they could help us schedule it. We kept getting transferred to other people or told they couldn't help us. I tried going in and they said no one on site could help, I'd have to go online or call the toll free number. Online, the website was very hard to navigate to find where I could cancel and then it says "you must call to cancel." But once I called they asked for a bunch of documents that we didn't have yet and said we wouldn't be charged a cancellation fee since our new state didn't have any clubs in it.
Once we physically moved and I called back they said I'd be charged $70 plus dollars. I knew better and said "no I shouldn't be," so he canceled part of the plan for child care, requested the refund for me and told me my husband was the only one who could cancel the family account but that he'd need to FAX in documents. Once he called and had it faxed, no one reached to us. I emailed again for help explaining my frustration and situation and they said I could just EMAIL the documents. But they apparently can't read word docs because they kept saying the 3 documents couldn't be viewed and needed extra information on each page I sent over - "The documents must contain your first and last names, membership numbers ** and **, telephone number and show proof of an address out a 25 mile radius from any 24 Hour Fitness location."
Obviously, in the email they show they had our member numbers in the chain email and our full names were in the document along with addressed that were outside of a "25 mile radius from any 24 Hour Fitness location." In the 15 email correspondence including member numbers, requests for cancellations, 2 job offer letters, 1 apartment community Welcome letter (with our full names, new address and community header complete with contact information for validation of information) our request still has not been completed 1 month from moving and 2 months from beginning this process.
I am furious and want a refund for charges from this month and the last. This treatment is reprehensible! My disappointment with their service began with shortcomings of their clubs and has plunged even deeper with their awful handling of this situation. I would have considered returning to their club if I moved in range again. But now I will be sharing on Social Media how bad this was and possibly the better business bureau.

The short of my experience is this: My "LIFETIME" membership renewal just increased. Please sign the petition at change.org asking for them to honor what we were told we would get. Now, here's the novel version of my experience: I like many others prepaid for 3 years at a cost of $750 with a verbal explanation that it would renew at $29/year. I was told it would stay at that price unless I didn't pay it on time or cancelled. I got the contract in 2007 and began paying the $29 renewal price after the first 3 years. Then this month (my 6th time renewing, beginning my 9th year of membership) I received my renewal notice and it had increased to $79 for this year with the explanation that the cost of giving service and upgrading the clubs requires an increase in membership price.
In the Oceanside/Vista/Carlsbad location there are approximately 4 clubs with several more in the surrounding cities. One is a brand new Super Sport construction project at the El Camino mall. It's nothing impressive when you go inside, but it was undoubtedly very costly to finish. I prefer the other clubs in the area to it, even though they are only Sport tier. In the Sport clubs, the supposed upgrades and improvements are not noticeable. In the Oceanside location on Hwy 76 for example, their was a closure of the pool and sauna area a couple weeks ago so they could do renovations. I wouldn't personally refer to that as an improvement as much as it may have been a much needed repair.
Suffice to say, I haven't noticed any increased personal benefit from any so-called upgrades or improvements. In fact, I have inquired about getting a swimsuit dryer in the Frazee Rd location (Oceanside, Hwy 76) since I began my membership in 2007. I have been told several times by the constantly changing managers that it will never have one. It would be nice if the members had a say in what was improved based on their needs. I wouldn't mind paying for something that was actually a benefit to me.
Nonetheless, it may need pointing out again from time to time that 24 Hour Fitness is ultimately just a business and furthermore, one of the largest gym businesses in the world. I suppose it shouldn't come as a surprise that they resort to such shark-like cutthroat business tactics to maintain their profits and market share. This seems like a growth or maybe even a recovery strategy, although I'm not sure it's a strong move when their membership prices are so astronomical compared with their competitors, despite not offering any premium services to substantiate them.
It's very obvious that members come second to revenues and profits when you hear about so many negative experiences. They range from refusals to cancel memberships, "bait-and-switch" tactics by managers and sales personnel, these latest wave of renewal increased, saying they will do something (like send you a copy of your contract) but never following through, etc., etc., etc.
It's not completely clear whether what they are doing with the membership renewal prices is illegal. However, it's certainly not pleasant to be treated this way, by any company. It boils down to a decision about whether to put up with this kind of abusive treatment for the benefit of going to one of their gyms. Not the easiest decision when the alternatives are following their lead in most cases now. Regardless, I don't recommend 24 Hour Fitness to anyone as the best gym out there. Not in pricing, not in customer service, and not in gym cleanliness nor amenities. About the only thing they have going for them is the wide selection of equipment. However, that only applies at newer clubs.
Check around first if you're looking for a new gym. If anyone offers you a trial, make sure you're not accidentally signing up for a one-year contract with no way out if you decide to go somewhere else. It should be common sense for many of us by now, but be especially careful with 24 Hour Fitness that what they are saying matches completely with what is written on the contract. They are masters of saying things that are not in the contract, e.g. cancellation policies, renewal prices, temporary suspensions for medical/military reasons, etc. They are smiles and positivity on the surface, but I give them 1 out 5 stars.

People, like myself, were told of the price increase when we were rejected access even after paying the dues right before the increase. That was how 24 Hour Fitness decided to notify people, basically, a surprise increase.

I went to gym and scanned my finger and they said I had not paid. I said I did. They looked up the account and said there was some extra tax charges they added. They fixed the account. I have had to do this every year since.
I knew some of the workers in membership who really helped me out. I moved across country from AZ to MD 3 years ago. I have paid my dues every year, on time and every time have to deal with this 98 cents tagged onto my account. This does not show up on my account when I call membership and it does not show up online when I pay. It only says 49.00... not 49.98. So they add the tax or whatever that .98 cent fee is... have no idea really. I paid it online last year in 2014 and it said 49.00.
So I called the membership department. I told him the fee was not right and that the same odd cents had not shown up and that I have been going thru this for several years. He said "No you're good. I said, I figured that was why I was having so much problem and I thanked him for checking my membership was ok.
That was last year and this year I went to pay online and the computer locked me out so I had to call membership and she said "Oh... so you were locked out. Ok let me look at your account." She said, "You did not pay for your full membership. You only paid 49.00 and not 49.98 so they cancelled you." I said I paid in full and I have to deal with this every year and the computer did not say anything but 49.00 when I paid in full. That is 24 Hour issue not mine. I was getting very upset because she kept saying I did not pay. Then she told me I was being disrespectful after I told her I did not want to talk to her and I wanted only a supervisor. Like dozens of other complaints on this site, I bought a prepaid 24 Hour Fitness membership six years ago. I paid the very significant amount of $1100 for three years up front and was assured by the 24 Hour sales rep at my gym that, as long as I kept renewing my membership after the three-year prepaid period, my annual renewal rate, starting after the prepaid period, would remain at $80. That $80 annual rate lasted for a mere three years. Three weeks ago, I received a letter from 24 Hour Fitness telling me that, due to their "making improvements," my annual renewal rate would be increasing. The notification letter conveniently did not state how much the increase would be. I figured it would be a standard annual renewal amount such as 10% but definitely no more than 20%. When the renewal notice came, I was astounded to see an increase just shy of a galling 100%.
24 Hour Fitness is guilty of deceptive sales practices and extortion. I, like so many others' stories on here, were sold memberships by 24 Hour sales reps who presented the three-year prepaid membership service differently than what was stated in our contracts, and, since what the reps said to us is not in writing in any way, we have no recourse to challenge the outrageous increases that are now being levied by 24 Hour's corporate office. It's interesting that virtually every complaint on here, from people all over the country, says the same thing: the 24 Hour sales rep said my low rate would stay the same after the big up-front payment, now they're charging me 100% more than that low rate.
No one is writing in and saying they were levied a 25% increase, a 50% increase: everyone is being assessed an outrageous 100% increase. The renewal notice actually says that, if we do not pay the increased rate they are assessing, our memberships will be terminated immediately. So much for customer loyalty. What was the point, then, of paying a huge amount of money for three years up front to be treated like dirt by 24 Hour now?
The whole point of paying a significant amount of money up front was to be rewarded with a continued low rate after the three-year prepaid period, a point that was made to me very clearly by the 24 Hour sales rep who sold the membership. What incentive would any of us have had to pay that much money up front if 24 Hour was going to do what they are now doing: raping us financially by greedily abusing Article 3c of their written contract, which states that they only have to keep the low annual fee amount after year three in a prepaid membership at that rate for one year, the initial year past the three-year prepaid period?
Of course, what the sales rep stated at the time of purchase in order to make the sale (and not in writing) was the complete opposite from 3c in the written contract. Never did the sales rep say what Article 3c actually says: the low rate only has to be extended for a piddly one year. The proof is in the body of complaints on here stating exactly the same frustration. The sales rep said the low rate would stay the same as long as the membership kept being renewed each year.
As far as I'm concerned, 24 Hour Fitness has earned more than enough money in interest off the $1100 they collected from me six years ago to pay easily the 100% rate increase they want from me now. I am very angry and would like a lawyer to contact me about this situation. It is a plain case of deceptive sales tactics and contractual "gotcha" to abuse loyal customers for capitalistic greed.

24 hour Fitness converted most of the clubs in San Francisco to Super Sport, not allowing members like me who has been with them for 20 years to use most of the clubs since our membership only allows entrance to sport and active. I understand this for newly built clubs, but secretly converting old clubs and claiming they are Super Sport and long-time members cannot use them is so low I think, especially that clubs still feature pretty old looks with semi dirty shower tiles and outdated equipment. Looks like a breach of contract and plain lying/cheating of those who invested into the organization from the start and deserve to use the facilities under original terms.

They refused to cancel, said they could remove my card from the account but then the amount that they say I owe would go to collections and ruin my credit. They had no options other than freezing my account for 3 months. I do not understand what makes their contract so iron clad that they can do this to people. I have paid for 6 months and we have never used the membership. Why would they not just cancel it. I even offered to pay one last month and separate, they refused.

My dad and my two brothers registered for 24 Hour Fitness membership on March 15. We wanted to get the month to month base membership because we wanted to try only for 1 month. The manager explained that we do have a monthly base membership, he convinced us that canceling is an easy process and there is no reason to worry about it. He also told us that our registration is not completed because my brothers didn't have phone numbers, so he only gave us a slip of paper we used to enter club every day for this month. We signed on computer screen many contract things which he just briefly explained to us. We paid only for 1 month and did not give a consent for automatic payment because we was not sure if we will continue.
After 1 month, we decided not to continue our membership because we were not satisfied with the club and we opened a membership in different fitness club. Two months later we noticed that the club is keeping charging us. We had no idea why, we just thought that it is a mistake. When we were trying to contact the club we were told us that we signed a membership commitment for 1 year and we have to pay certain penalty fee. I was more than surprised. I tried to contact their customer service and financial department numerous times. They promised to resolve the problem, but it never happened. 5 months passed and they are keeping charging us.

Well, I got my bill for $150 and went online to pay given what I've read about nobody having success and they happened to have my contract online so I took a look. While they have signatures, the amount paid is bogus. It says $200 instead of the $600, so they obviously edited the contract on me. The Moraga 24 Hour Fitness had a membership special @ 10 years ago that offered $599 for 3 years and $49 FOR LIFE. There were banners with the 3 years for $599 then $49 FOR LIFE all over the location. It was clear and unambiguous. Apparently "FOR LIFE" now means "until we decide to raise rates." After 10 years, I received a renewal notice for $149/YR - a 300% increase. There will now be nothing stopping them from raising rates by whatever amount they choose, regardless of your original contract now that this precedent has been set.
Rather than everyone just complain how unfair or unethical this breach of contract is, there really needs to be a class action lawsuit organized to force 24 Hour Fitness to honor their contracts, whether verbal or written. Is anyone reading this an attorney that can offer some advice to the many people that have fallen victim to this unethical breach of contract or help us organize a class action suit to force their hand?

Recently I went to the 24 hour in Carlsbad off Palomar airport rd. This is also their corporate headquarters. I was told I could not enter because I was not a super sport member although I have been going to this location for over ten years off and on. I asked to speak to the manager. Cameron told me due to higher operating costs they were changing the name to increase rates. He said this was to "be able to offer fitness to everyone". So the rate increase of a gym rate in a higher economic area is to help everyone be able to access its services? Isn't this gym part of a chain? If I pay for a sport membership but they just change all the names to super sport I guess I am just out of luck. Pretty shameless.

In August 2007 I purchased a membership at 24 Hour Fitness in Olympia, WA. I paid my membership fees during the construction phase of the facility, before it opened up. The salesperson sold me my membership out of a storefront in the local Capital Mall. I paid for 3 years in advance with the promise that - beginning year #4 - I would pay only $79 a year forever, as long as I kept my membership current. Since that time I've been paying $79 once a year in August.
In late July of 2015, I received a letter from 24 Hour Fitness telling me my annual fee is increasing to $170 and that it was due on September 9, 2015 (today is August 30, 2015). The reason presented in the letter was 'increased costs' of operating 24 Hour Fitness. Thinking this was a mistake because of the $79 promise and the new due date, I went to my club and asked about it. Front desk staff referred me to the sales manager who was not there. However, the front desk staff person told me he was aware that my situation has been happening with other members at my club and that the sales manager was able to get an 'extension' for some of the members.
I called the 24 Hour Fitness corporate office in Carlsbad, CA and asked the customer service rep to check into it. She told me that I should have read the fine print of my contract and that I had always been paying my annual fee in September (not true). I asked her to send me a copy of the contract I signed. She said she would mail it to me and that it would take 10 days for me to receive it. There is a very slight chance I may still have my original contract in my files at home. I really hope I can find it. At this point, unless I can prove otherwise, I will pay the $170 before the September 9 deadline. However, I will continue to follow up on this issue to get to the bottom of it. The staff at 24 Hour Fitness in Olympia are wonderful people. The corporate practice of misrepresentation of fees is not cool. If a class-action lawsuit is warranted, count me in!

Not sure if they still use them but the Filipino call center employees are not very helpful at all. The cancellation line employees are even worse though. Last year I wanted to cancel but they convinced me to do a "freeze", however on two separate calls they neglected to inform me that there was a $10 fee to do this. Because they didn't tell me about it they did reverse the charge however. Today I called to cancel for good and I had to wait on hold for 30 minutes, and since it's a dedicated cancellation line, it seems like they are intentionally trying to make it difficult to cancel. My rate was recently raised to %99/year (I believe most everyone's rate was raised recently). They lied. However, there's nothing illegal (to my knowledge) about their representative lying. The contract is all that matters. Looking at my contract, it appears that they can raise my yearly fee by as much as they like, as long as they give me advance warning. Since there are others in my situation, I figured I'd add what we all know: read your contract before signing. There's nothing that we can do about being lied to initially. Since some people here can't obtain their contracts, I'm going to include it here.
"If you have a monthly membership, 24 Hour may increase your monthly dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than three percent of your then current monthly dues. Any such increase will not occur during the first three months of your membership. Your EFT date will not change. If you have a prepaid membership, 24 Hour will not increase your Initial Annual Renewal Amount on page 1 of this agreement, but may increase all subsequent annual renewal amounts. 24 Hour will send you notice of your new annual renewal amount each year thereafter prior to the end of your then current term." I have pointed this out to the latest manager twice in the past two months and gotten the same response - "I'll talk to the night cleaning crew." Do we even have a night cleaning crew? Men's locker room ceiling was painted about two years ago but the black trim over the lockers still has paint from ceiling paint smears - a quart or less of black paint, a $4.00 paint brush and 45 minutes would fix this. Bottom of hallway wall outside of locker room was patched over a month ago - no attempt to paint it.
The past two Sundays all of the soap dispensers in the men's shower room were empty. The young lady at the front desk "I'll make a note about it." As you walk out of the men's room the wall on the right has adhesive left over from old posters from two years ago, a razor blade and a little rubbing alcohol would take care of this. If you're not going to replace the broken lane divider at least move it out of the room... I realize that this club is a ** stepchild and that your first reaction is that these are all minor cosmetic things. THAT'S my point. They are not big expensive things.
