    Pros & Cons

    Pros
    • 100% accuracy guarantee
    • Free file extension
    Cons
    • No advance refund loans
    • Phone support for Pro level only

    What is TaxHawk?

TaxHawk is a cloud-based tax software company based completely in the United States. It is available in every state and Washington, D.C., and offers three different service levels that work with almost any tax situation. With access to over 350 supported credits and deductions, even those who are in the military or have rental income can use the platform.

However, there are a few exclusions that TaxHawk does not help with, including foreign employment income or donations of valuables over $5,000, such as collectibles and real estate. TaxHawk cannot help nonresident aliens with tax filing, either.

    How does TaxHawk work?

Once you choose which level of TaxHawk you would like to use, you will be prompted through a series of tax questions. Even at the Pro level, the program is designed for self-prepare.

TaxHawk makes many aspects of filing taxes easier by allowing you to upload your W-2 and previous tax information, even if it is from a competitor. The software can then auto-fill many of your answers.

    TaxHawk packages

All of TaxHawk’s plans include the option for a free tax deadline extension, which won’t allow you to delay paying the IRS, but can help you hold off on filing until October.

    Free version

The free version costs $0 for federal filing and $17.99 for state filing as of this writing. The free version even allows you to file for self-employed, 1099 or contractor income.

    Deluxe version

You will still need to pay $17.99 to file your state return, but the additional $7.99 for Deluxe allows you to receive live chat support, unlimited amendments and audit support.

Considering amendments cost $15.98 after you file, paying $7.99 upfront could save you money in the long run.

    Pro version

The Pro version is an additional $49.99, but discounts have been offered for this version. This price does not include the additional $14.99 for state returns.

The Pro version comes with everything included with the Deluxe version plus access to a certified public accountant (CPA) or enrolled agent (EA). You will also have access to phone support and screen-share.

    TaxHawk pricing

All TaxHawk customers will be charged $0 for federal returns and $17.99 for state returns at the time of publishing. There are optional upgrades.

For an additional $7.99, users can upgrade to the Deluxe program, which comes with unlimited amendments, audit support and live chat support.

Alternatively, customers can pay an extra $49.99 for the Pro version, which comes with personalized tax help, phone support and live screen-sharing.

Other costs you should be aware of include:

    • $7.97 for a mailed printed return
    • $15.98 for amended returns if you don’t have the Deluxe version
    • $15.99 for a professionally bound printed return
    • $17.99 to file a prior year’s state return or amend a prior year’s return
    • $24.99 fee for paying with your tax refund (no fee for credit card/debit card)

    TaxHawk FAQ

    Does TaxHawk offer any guarantees?

TaxHawk offers three guarantees: an always-free federal file, a maximum refund guarantee and a 100% calculation accuracy guarantee. The maximum refund guarantee allows customers to get a refund and free amended tax returns if they find a better refund with another online tax software. TaxHawk will also refund any penalties or interest from the IRS if there was a miscalculation or error in the software.

Can I file unemployment with TaxHawk?

Yes, filing with unemployment benefits costs $0 for federal returns and $17.99 for state returns. The software supports unemployment benefits, severance income and side hustle income.

Does TaxHawk offer advance refund loans?

Unlike some of its competitors, TaxHawk does not offer advance refund loans, so you cannot receive access to funds immediately.

How soon after I file can I check my refund status?

If you e-file with TaxHawk, you will be able to check your refund status 24 hours after the IRS accepts your tax return. If you submit your taxes via paper, it can take up to four weeks for your status to appear.

    Do we recommend TaxHawk?

TaxHawk is worth looking into if you prefer self-preparing your taxes and want a flat-fee structure. If you have complicated taxes, you might need more support than what TaxHawk offers. As a tax company that has been around for over two decades, it has helped file over 50 million tax returns securely with the IRS and has proven itself trustworthy.

      Reviewed March 24, 2011

I did my taxes with a friend and he have them to his friend who works with a person who files taxes in an office, which I am assuming is a tax hawk.

I have no contact with the person who actually handled my taxes and never seen them nor do I know their name. I called the IRS and they placed a trace onto that person who had my refund deposited into their account which is not mine and I did not authorize them to have my refund be placed into their account. I want to file a fraudulent tax filing report on them because it had been taken on the 11th of February. This situation has caused me and my family so much stress and anxiety. I am taking depression pills because I am afraid these people will use my daughter's social security the following year and claim her. They have all of my information as far as where I work, where I live, my social and my daughter's social and I believe it to be ridiculous that people can take someone else's refund without nothing being done to them.

It's completely outrageous that I have been led on dealing with crooks whom I don't know nothing about and I admit that it was partly my fault for trusting a stranger, but at the same time it is not right that someone could get away with having someone's identity and my daughter's identity at their fingertips and have my refund put into their account so easily without any consequences.

I will deeply appreciate any help that I can receive because I literally have been robbed and I'm fearful that my information will be used the next year to file taxes under another person's name or banking account.
