I like that they gave me a chance to improve my credit when no one else would. I like the no annual fee, periodic credit line increases, and that they handled a fraudulent purchase by giving me a full refund. What I do not like is the high Apr. I have worked on my credit for three years and deserve a lower Apr. I also do not like no rewards for using the card. So I only use my card for an emergency, not everyday.

I am very pleased to say that I have never had to deal with Merrick Bank. This is good news. Someone that has to deal with a bank means there's something that's gone wrong and needs human input to be fixed. That Merrick has never needed something fixed is a testament to their website and their banking policies. Their website is a dream to navigate, very user-friendly. I am proud to be part of the Merrick family, and very glad they took a chance on me. Even though my credit rating was good - very good, my credit was over-extended and they took a chance. It has been over a year and all payments have been made on time, if not ahead of time, and with minimum or more payments. When someone extends trust to you like this, you don't want to waste it foolishly. Thank you, Merrick Bank, for being the wonderful service you are!

I have paid my credit balance off almost every month, not just the minimum due. When I called, the agent didn't know what I was talking about and then said "oh, we don't do that". She was not pleasant or nice. Capital One went out of their way to help me.

I got this card, which I absolutely regret! Next time I'll do more research before I get into a card like this. I plan on cancelling next month because of all their crap, but all the reviews I've read about cancelling are nightmares. I mailed my Payment in on the 13th of August, I paid all my other cards and some other bills at the same time. I figured it couldn't take more than 4 days to get there. BOY WAS I WRONG! I called on day 4 and they couldn't deny or confirm that they received the payment. So I called them back on day 5, on day 6, on day 7 and on day 8 all the same thing. On day 9 when I called they said no payment was received. At that point I went online to check the review and read similar accounts.

Instead of checking the source of my payment and cancelling it I waited two more days (11 days after mailing in the payment) and called one last time before I was going to cancel the payment. Sure enough it was received but not posted. By the time they posted it to my account they charged me a LATE FEE! Can you believe that I got a late fee because they were late! Customer service was very rude and finally agreed to waive the fee which I found out wasn't a total waive - just a portion of the late fee. Plus it would take 3-4 days to post the waiver. Also you can never just call to check your balance without taking 10 minutes to talk to one of the reps. They have no automated service. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IF TRYING TO BUILD YOUR CREDIT.

I had an 1800.00 account with them. An account that was always paid on time and never missed a payment with them for more than a year. I went to use my card at a store and it declined. Turns out there was some kind of security compromise and they froze the account and was supposed to send me a new card. That was in June. It's now August and still no replacement. Mind you, I've destroyed the old card. That account was paid down to zero balance. They wanted to charge me a 15.00 fee for a freeze on my account which I wasn't informed of, I was told I would get another card and didn't receive it. Now because it wasn't in the system they want me to pay for a replacement. For a breach that wasn't my doing. The attitude from the person on the phone, RUDE. I asked to close the account. Without even trying to save the account, an 1800.00 account in perfect standing, they closed it. Great business. Let a 1800.00 account go for 15.00.

Merrick Bank is consistently slow in processing payments. I paid off my account in full for $1400 and they are holding half? Why? Until the payment is confirmed, by who? The money is gone from my checking account and I show a $1 balance in my credit account. Customer service is rude and not very helpful. A supervisor tells me that this is their policy and it's in the terms of my contract. They say if I want my money, to send them a copy of my bank statement. Just B.S. We know that if they do this consistently they can get a small amount of interest for another day or 2 which adds up when you're moving millions of dollars.

On three different occasions when I have paid my credit card bill online, my "check" have been returned. The online website has a dropdown to pick the date you want to pay your bill. I always choose either the day I am paying it or the next day. I then later check my online account and the payment shows as being paid with a confirmation number. On three occasions, I later get a statement from Merrick Bank saying my "check" has been returned for insufficient funds. Upon looking at my bank account, it shows that it was at least a week after I scheduled my payment that it was taken out of my account.

I then called Merrick Bank and asked, "why do you have a date for something to be paid if you are not going to take it out of my bank account on that day?" Merrick Bank claims they do. I can attest that they don't. I make my payments out of a business account that three others also use so day to day, it's easy to not overdraw it but after waiting several days, this causes an overdraft. Wouldn't mind it if the Merrick Bank website said "pending payment" but it says "payment" with date 7 confirmation number on it.

Merrick Bank will NOT check this matter out. They claim it is taken out on the day you put you want to pay. I'm extremely upset with them. I have three other credit cards and they all come out on the date you put in!!! If you are on a bank account with more than yourself & aren't the one who keeps the bank book, it's best if you choose another credit card company cause this one has some major kinks! And they are NOT willing to work on it & take no responsibility!!!

I used this card for about 2 years as a way to help build credit. In the 2 years I had the card I was never late - always paid on time and never had any issues with the account whatsoever, UNTIL I CLOSED THE ACCOUNT!! I called in on May 1st to close the account and pay the balance in full. I no longer needed this card as I had established a good credit rating and had much better interest rates through other banks, therefore I decided to simply close the account to avoid paying the high interest rates. On the day that I called I was told my balance was $131.06 and that I needed to pay in full to cancel/close the account permanently. So I did, and never thought anything about it again.

Around 2 months later, July 15th to be exact, I noticed my credit score had taken a huge hit! I use MyFICO to monitor my credit and received an alert that my score had dropped by 59 points, which is HUGE. I had been working for years to build my credit and it made no sense why it would all of a sudden take such a major hit. Upon investigating through MyFICO, I found Merrick Bank had reported that I was more than 60 days past due on my account!? I immediately called Merrick Bank customer service to see how/why they could report this.

Customer service stated that there were additional charges on my account and refused to tell me what those charges were. They stated they were mailed to me in my monthly statement (a statement I never received) and that I needed to review the statement to see what the charges were for. Because I didn't receive the statement, I really had no way to identify what the additional charges could be for. They then continued to tell me that they had added interest charges, late fee, and 2 months worth of "annual fees" that were being billed on a monthly basis. How and the heck do you charge interest and annual fees on an account that was CLOSED AND PAID IN FULL??

After nearly a week of escalating through supervisors and waiting to get calls back I finally spoke to a supervisor who said there is nothing they could do to help me, I simply had to pay the balance in full. I HAD ALREADY PAID THE BALANCE IN FULL, no way am I going to pay again when you can't tell me what I am paying for or why I am still being charged interest and fees on a CLOSED ACCOUNT. I ultimately had to file a dispute with the credit agency (Equifax) and I'm currently waiting for the result of this dispute which I am told could take up to 30 days.

Hopefully this gets fixed somehow, but I wanted to somehow find a way to share my situation so that other Merrick Bank card holders or potential card holders could be prepared for what may happen when you close the account. I advise you all to monitor your credit VERY closely after closing the account and I would suggest you use a service to monitor your credit score. Because Merrick Bank stopped sending statements, I would have never known this had been reported on my credit if it weren't for the alert sent to me from MyFICO account. This is bad business by Merrick Bank, why they would add charges to a closed account and then not tell the customer what the charges were for is just absurd. I am very hopeful that the Equifax dispute resolves this problem and restores my credit score.

I have never had any issues while at the same time have enjoyed limit increases in a timely manner. The only thing mandatory that I have to pay each month is the annual fee that is broken up by month. It's only $4 a month. There is interest, but it is fairly low. Let's do the math $458+$79=$573 (not $700) YET...NO PENDING TRANSACTIONS SHOWING. Conclusion: they see the pending transactions but don't tell you. Constantly having to do my own math...iPhone will show totally different amounts that PC and they both withhold actual amounts. They take days to post payments. This card stressed me out! Due to their tricky system...Always worried I'm going to overdraft. Conclusion: This bank knows how to "bank" off people! Good job Merrick!

I recommend anyone who has the opportunity and privilege to bank with them to take full advantage of it. I have not heard one negative comment about Merrick Bank and they are very generous in granting credit line increases without my having to ask. I am always surprised to learn of my increase because I always thought that it was something that I had to ask for. I love Merrick Bank and it is my intention to continue to do banking with them for as long as they will me as a customer. Hats off to you Merrick Bank, you have made me a proud and loyal customer. I have had this bank card for several months. Every time I post the payment it takes forever to access my funds even though it shows on my mobile Merrick Bank app it is been posted and paid, also on my personal checking account. It's Mother's day, I flew to Florida. I called them yesterday to see if they can release my funds before I left for my trip. They said "no I'm sorry your funds won't be available till tomorrow". They also asked me to do a screenshot of my bank information which my phone obviously will not let me do. They also asked me to have my bank fax over my account information. My bank will not do that. They're totally unwilling to work with me.

The worst credit card customer service I've ever experienced. In fact I had one woman hang up on me and now they're telling me, four reps that my account would be available today and now the account representative is saying it's not going to be available till Tuesday. Now I'm stuck in Florida unable to take my dying mother ANYWHERE!! Please nobody get this card, it's nothing but bad news and a hassle!!! Customer service is rude and will not work with you. Don't pay your card off in full because you won't be able to use it for a month at least. I will be calling the Better Business Bureaus as well. AND I WILL BE CLOSING IT AS WELL! After running into a few strokes of bad luck I had to file a chapter 7 bankruptcy. After it discharged a few free credit reporting sites recommended the Merrick Card to help rebuild my credit. I applied and I was approved! They have only raised my credit limit once but it went from $750 - $1900. My credit is just under a 700 and I thank Merrick for being one reason why I am credit worthy again. For all the negative reviews it seem that those people have no idea how a non secured credit card works let alone how their credit rating is based. If you simply follow their policies which are like most other credit cards it's really common sense. I highly recommend this card if you are familiar with the general use of a credit card and how credit rating works. Otherwise stick to the prepaid/secured credit cards you can load up and use like monopoly money.

OK people, I received a non-secured credit card offer of $600 from Merrick almost exactly one month ago. After reading the reviews here, I was hesitant to accept it because of the medium-low star ratings however; I did accept it and glad I did. After reading through many of these, it appears that many people who are getting a chance to REBUILD their credit are blowing it by doing things outside Merrick's standard policies and procedures. Merrick is TAKING A BIG GAMBLE with many of you and at the first sign of you being a troublemaker, they apparently will promptly close your account. If it was my money on the line, I would do the same thing. Would you extend credit to someone who has fair-poor credit rating and then take any crap from them? No, you wouldn't.

Everyone, if you operate within their rules, your FICO credit score will increase. Then, you can get another credit card HOWEVER and REGARDLESS of what card you receive you will always have to operate within the rules. Yes, with a high FICO score you may be able to call some shots with the issuing bank but to achieve that high score, you definitely were not a pain in the neck to your creditors.

One last note, in this first month I had my $600 card, I spent over $750 on it. I paid it down each week to about $150-$250 balance and charged on it again. They allowed me to make four bank account payments within 30 days and I received notifications when my payments cleared and posted, which were always within 2-3 business days. Even Google Wallet can't post money that fast from your bank account and it's considered a secured Mastercard.

I received a credit card at my residence in January 2015 my boyfriend's name (**), I thought this was weird and something told me to check my card number and to my surprise it contained my same account number for my card. I called Merrick Bank to determine how this happened. I was transferred to the IT department to have it researched and it was determined that I never authorized this transaction via phone call or correspondence and they could not explain how this happened. I had a major concern and was informed that a new card would be issued with a different account number and a letter per my request providing me with an explanation as to why this occurred.

I have since paid the account off in full and to date I have not received a new card nor a letter of explanation. I contacted the customer service department to be told they could not overnight me a new card at their expense even though one was never issued in January as promised. I have again asked for an explanation for this situation and I am still having a problem with receiving this information. Merrick Bank may not believe this is a serious situation or a breach of privacy but I see otherwise.

I am also dealing with another situation in which I made a car payment using my Merrick Bank card and was informed that the bank encoded the transaction as a cash advance, so I was being charged approximately $20.00 a month in fees since August 2014. After speaking with customer service I was told I would have to rectify this with my bank. I have contacted them in which I am awaiting a letter explaining this was a charge and not a cash advance so I can forward to them and have my account accredited bank all fees charged. I am hoping I will not have a problem with this situation as well.

I had not had any problems with them taking the payments out as scheduled until recently when they stated they tried to pull a payment out (that was scheduled on March 4th 2015) and said it was returned account frozen.

Well after two hours on the phone with both my bank (My account had never been frozen, is in good standing and funds were and are still available and according to my bank there was never a request for the funds to be sent to Merrick and that Merrick never tried to put the payment through my bank per verifying it with my banks representatives by the way.) and Merrick Bank and attempts to get it resolved, Merrick bank revoked my account without even notifying me there was an issue with the payment and discussing it with me. They simply stated that the computer revoked the card and there was nothing that they could do to fix the issue. I only found out when I went to use my card.

This company has POOR business ethics. Since after several hours of phone calls and poor customer service the issue remains unresolved. I made every attempt to fix the issue, including sending a recent transaction history showing that they never requested payment or any returned payment status, my bank even stated they would do a conference call with them and myself, and asking them to re-enter the account information in case there was a computer glitch, and Merrick Bank would not consider any of those options.

I recently got approved for a $700.00 credit with Merrick Bank (Visa). Although I don't have any issue using the card my issue is with the account information available once you log into your account online. Here is what I experienced with the online information.

First when I use the toll-free number to call, the automated system asks for your credit card number (account number). I didn't even get a chance to put the completed number in when the system says I have entered an incorrect account number. Tried it again and got the same results. You can use the option "if you don't know your account number press "0". I had to do this twice as the system told me I entered an incorrect number.

Most credit cards I own you are able to view transactions (including pending charges) almost immediately or within a few hours at most. I make credit card charges in Canada and I can log into my Capital One account and not only see the pending transaction but also the exchange rate. This is not so with Merrick. The most recent transaction showing online with Merrick is 3 days old.

This is unacceptable and doubt I use this card for much.

Does anyone know what's going on with the website? Yeah it's all pretty and everything, but when I click on login, it gets me nowhere. I just got a second card from them, which in hindsight I should not have done. I thought the card would be a higher credit limit...it's the same as the first one, $700. They don't tell you how much credit the card will have on it until you receive it in the mail and it is already activated, and they have charged you right at $150 in fees already. Merrick Bank is a MAJOR disappointment. I was an active card member with them for over two years and recently cancelled my account. When you sign-up for a secured card to rebuild your credit, they state that they give credit limit increases regularly once you establish a good payment record. Cool I thought. It's worth it. After being a card member for over two years and paying my bill IN FULL every month without EVER BEING LATE, they raised my credit limit in this time period from my initial secured $600 to $1,100. They charge you a $36 annual fee which they bill on a monthly basis ($3 per statement) which I'm sure they do it hoping that if you don't use your card, that you will be late for the $3 so they can ding you with a late fee.

To top things off, when I went to close my account to get my deposit back, the agent said it would take 60-90 days to get it back. Unbelievable. They want your money to open an account quickly and then sit on it for several weeks. Then, when you find out how horrible they are and it's time to get your deposit back, good luck.

If you are looking to rebuild your credit, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Capital One. I got a secured account with them with a $300 limit for just a $49 security deposit. After 3 months, they raised my limit to $750. I applied for an unsecured card at that time and they approved me a $3K limit - 6 months later raised it to $6K and just last week raised it to $9K. All in 18 months. I cancelled my secured card with them and they had the $49 security deposit back to me in 3 days.

Merrick Bank makes every effort to take advantage of those who have had financial problems in the past while Capital One makes an effort to help people. If you pay your bill in full every month, they are super fair with credit limit increases and the card gives me 1.5% cash back on every purchase. You get nothing from Merrick Bank. Goodbye Merrick Bank. If just one person decides not to use your services, this review will have worked.

I was making a payment by phone and the prompt message stated that "I've made an online payment before, do I want to use the same bank routing number and account number." I said yes, and proceeded with the payment. Over a week later I received a letter in the mail that the account for the payment was closed, so therefore Merrick bank closed my credit card account. I was puzzled and shocked and when I spoke to a representative I found out that the "account number on file" was for an account, which I closed and therefore I gave them the correct routing number and account number.

I have been trying to reactivate the account or reopen the account and the representative told me this is the bank's decision and their policy. I asked to speak with a supervisor to find out what I should do to reactivate the account. When I asked if this ever happened to anyone else (making a mistake like I did and getting the account closed) and doesn't this seem illogical since my credit is good and this was a clerical error, she replied, "No it's just you". I was polite and calm. There was no need for a customer service professional to be rude to a customer. To get this far, I had to call several times, on hold a long time and was disconnected twice. I felt like the customer service people didn't want to help, but needed to answer their phones. Say 25% on purchases, and 30% on cash advance, putting a small amount of principal to each transaction. The end result is: The $200 cash advance never goes away. Try calling, and pay off just the cash advance, they put the payment toward the entire balance, and the cash advance balance is still there. The information on your account page is vague. Try getting a PDF report showing complete information, such as Beginning balance, payment, what was applied to principal, what was applied to interest, end balance. Cash advance balance would be nice. The bottom line; this company's reluctance to show complete information is a red flag, to show account history, is a red flag. The hotel then issued a refund to the Merrick Bank credit card. Since this date of refund, 9/5/2014, my dad has yet to have the money refunded back to his card. I have made several attempts to resolve this matter with Merrick Banks customer service department. Now, I have worked in the customer service field my entire adult life. What I have experienced with this particular service department is, by far, the worst.

I am not irate or irrational when I call, I am calm and friendly because I know that being upset and yelling isn't going to get me very far. However, I have been literally hung up on 3 times. I get through to someone, they transfer me a few times and then finally, once in the "disputes" department, I get a very defensive and angry set of people. It's crazy! The fact that they completely hate their jobs, spews through the phone. My last call had me asking from which date was the 30-60 day period before the "decision" on whether or not he will even get a refund was... Bam! She hung up on me again.

Anyway, my poor father has still not received his refund, and the transaction is in "dispute" for whatever reason (it's just a refund!), and I'm completely dumbfounded that this company is even in business. I believe they prey on poor people who are trying to reestablish credit and Merrick Bank has them in the palm of their hands because they know the limited options their customers have. It's a pathetic and sad way to do business. If you get anything out of my rant, be it this... Go somewhere else for a credit card. There are plenty of banks out there willing to lend to you that have a better reputation, better reviews, and MUCH better customer service department.

Within 24 hours of missing the payment the telephone calls began. I inform the representative that I was just operated on and I would gladly make a payment if they would waive the late fee being that it was less than 24 hours Past due.

Since they would not waive the late fee, I informed them that I would pay the balance on the next due date. Due to the fact that they already charged me 35 Dollars, I saw no need to rush and make a payment especially they spoke to me like a child. Apparently this was not satisfactory to them and I received 5 more phone calls within two weeks asking me where my payment was and why I did not make it. When I explained to them that I was operated on and had already scheduled the payment, they began asking me again why I did not make the payment.

Mind you, I had never missed a payment or had a late fee prior to this encounter. The fact that they called me 6 times in 3 weeks for a 30 dollar payment is utterly ridiculous. Even when I told them to cancel my account, they doubled and tripled down with utter nonsense.

I can't say I'm complaining at this point, but do have a concern in-regard to mailing payments to their payment center in Tampa FL. I mailed a $50 payment, money order, the same day I mailed a payment to a company in California. The California company rec'd my payment the following Tuesday and posted it. I just checked my MB online account and still the payment mailed to them has not posted. I called customer service, she only asked for my name and was told they were having "issues" with their payment center, but didn't elaborate. I called back a few minutes later, this rep asked for my account number and other info and asked when my due date would be, which they told me.

I mentioned the money order I had sent and was told they had not received it (10 calendar days after being mailed), this rep unaware of any issues in regard to mailed payments. I have decided to not mail any future payments. If mailing payments, suggest you do so only by certified mail in order to track it. I will make my payments via wire transfer, which they assured me would post in 1-2 days and that the full amount of the payment would be immediately available since it is a cash transfer. We shall see. I hope they are not holding mailed in payments so they can calculate/apply interest on the higher balance? Every company has its' good and bad points and I'll give the benefit of doubt on this money order payment, but if it hasn't posted by Wednesday of next week, think I'll contact the money order company and find out if it has been cashed.

Hopefully, payments by MoneyGram will be the better method? Customer service was friendly enough, but too readily gave the excuse of "lost in mail", left the call feeling a bit odd and concerned. Hopefully, things will work with out with the mailed payment. I see a lot of reviews stating pretty much the same thing about the delay in posting, etc., but I will give them the benefit of doubt at this point. I appreciate them giving me the unsecured card, but if it is going to be a hassle each month to pay them, I may just use this card in the future only on an absolute need to use it, not for regular use.

Thank you Merrick Bank for letting me keep my peace of mind at least till the end of the month. Money is tight and when my car was overheating, I brought it to my local garage, to get the problem fixed properly. I charged $525 to my Merrick Bank card and took keys but the car still continues to overheat. I called the dispute resolution department at Merrick Bank and they opened a case right away. I was so scared I was going to be out of five hundred dollars. I'm so glad I used my Merrick Bank bankcard instead of CASH!

They rejected my application within 24 hours. I called to see when I would receive my deposit back. At first they said 5 to 10 business days. Then when I call the next day, I was told 30 days. Today I called on 9/24 and the representative said it would take 30 to 60 days. This seems illegal, and if it isn't it should be, for them to require a deposit to make a decision. Other credit card companies don't require a deposit, for them to tell you if you're approved or not.

Meanwhile our checking acct was compromised and needed to be frozen. Merrick payment still hadn't cleared so I called and warned them it would happen. They told me not to worry just keep checking to see if it cleared. It got rejected, and they closed our account. I called and explained again what happened but they acted like we were the criminals. I have always paid on time and more than the minimum but it made no difference. I finally got letters from the bank sent it to them but haven't heard back... nothing like being raped twice, once by the crooks and again by Merrick..

I purchased a new travel trailer approx. 18 months ago and the dealer used Merrick Bank RV loan department. The interest seemed extremely high but knowing that I was paying it off with 24 months, I accepted the loan. I paid approx. 2k a month to avoid the interest plus a 5k payment yearly. Today I called to pay off the remaining balance and was told 1) I could not use a withdrawal [automatic], 2) a debit card or 3) a credit card payment, only a check over the phone. Ok, but at midnight you will have my money and you still get to keep my title for 60 days?

Then I was told that it can take up to 60 days to receive the title. What? First, the rep said I would owe interest from today until the title is released, which I questioned him about. Then he stated "that since I was paying today, the interest would stop when Merrick received the funds from my bank". I said wait a minute, that does not sound legal. If I pay it off what are you talking about, you have my money." Response was "they have to calculate it for interest." What? To which he replied, "well, are you selling the rv?" What the heck? I said no, I am getting my personal matters in order and I have legal issues to resolve, like living trust, titles, wills etc. He couldn't give a care.

I tried to explain again that I have requirements and obligations to close because of my health. Then he went into this argument that I could "stop payment", reverse the payment or the payment could be refused by my bank. I wanted to say, stupid look at the payment history, but I didn't. I stopped the discussion and asked him: If you "went to best buy paid 2k for a TV and was told, gee too bad the superbowl is tomorrow, but we need to keep the TV and take your cash until 60 days have passed, would that work for you?" His response was to conference in both his supervisors to CHOA and repeated you will get your title within 60 days that our policy. Then states however, if I haven't received my title in "60 DAYS" I COULD call back. I almost laughed thinking "Can you hear me now?" Finally, he never asked me for a forwarding address, which would have been Priceless.

I asked 3 times for a payment confirmation number and finally got one. Who knows where the title will go as he could not confirm what mailing address he had on file. I had begun this call by explaining that I had sold a home and asked if he had my "other" address on file. He stated he'd look, but until I told him my SSN he couldn't get me the pay off. So long story short, they have my money, my title and minutes of my life I can't get back. Of course they didn't want me to pay it off, no more interest for them. I know I was probably a bad customer because they received very little interest over the 18 months. Wonder how this assets are represented in the financials held titles? Use my assets for their 30-60 day pay off period to invest or borrow against for their gain? Hummm worth thinking about the legality of a ploy like that...

It was sent to the one on my bill, they endorsed it and then sent it back to my credit union and said it was sent to the wrong address. They said if the account was gonna be closed it had to go to a different address... So here it is two weeks later and it still hasn't posted to my account. When I call MERRICK BANK and speak to supervisors, all they say is "Well, we don't control the mail"... Really??? I received a letter a couple of days ago stating that they had made an error and that they had not received my Aug 2014 payment and now my account shows 30 days past due. I already sent my Sept 2014 payment which I was told by a customer service rep that they investigated and have decided that my original payment was posted to the wrong account and I now owe Aug 2014 and Sept 2014's payments and they had to record a 30 days past due on my credit report.

I checked my money order which I purchased at a US Post office branch. In order to provide proof that the money order was cashed, I must pay the USPS $5.00 and it could take 2-4 weeks. Merrick Bank stated that I must provide proof that the money order was purchased (which I have) and cashed and after receiving this proof, they will open an investigation. Until then I must pay my August and Sept payments AGAIN in order to bring my account current. Completely their error and I'm the one paying for it.

Conveniently, once my account is paid off they are needing the ability to "urgently" contact me. This is almost as bad as getting a late fee when I had mailed my payment 2 WEEKS in advance. The woman in customer service kept saying that I need to mail it 10 days in advance to make sure it's on time. She couldn't understand that I was telling her I mailed it 2 weeks - which is MORE than 10 days... This has been a truly HORRIBLE company to do business with. I always pay my full balance minus $20.00, because I heard that it is better to leave a small balance. I did not expect a credit increase on a secured card, but they have given me 3 credit line increases. In addition, everyone is super nice when I call in. I am recovering some bad credit and was thrilled to have this opportunity to rebuild my credit and also get a start on christmas shopping for my daughters. I have not had a single problem with my account since I had received this card. I use their mobile app to keep updates on my account and make sure everything is correct. I had called once in february to see if I could get an emergency credit limit increase because my cat had to have surgery and the customer service rep I spoke to was very nice and explained to me they cannot do requests to increase, which I know some companies can't. He then told me when I should expect my auto increase for the double my limit when I applied and even told me how they do it.

Sure enough in May after I had made my next statement payment a few days later my increase was on there and I had no issues using the card after. I also sent them a large payment of $1,000 when my next statement was due sent via mobile app through my iphone and it posted to my account the next business day and the full amount was there to spend. I never had any issues with my bank either rejecting the payment regardless of the size of the payment which I always tried to send more than the minimum amount due. I really can't complain at all about this card other than their interest is on the high side but that's what you expect when you have not so great credit. October 2014 I'll have this card for 1 year and it was the best thing I took the risk on getting.

The first payment that I made was made thru their website. The payment didn't post automatically. I called their customer service. The rep was nice and advised that payments are held for some reason I didn't understand but he did advise me that if I paid directly thru my bank using bill pay, payments post that same day. I have Bern passing thru my bank for almost 2 years now with no issues. I make my payments on time and have paid every bill in full.

As promised, they have doubled my limit to $1400. Because thru took a chance on me and I acted reasonably, I have been able to build my credit. I have several cards now with much higher limits but I keep this card with Merrick because they're great. I don't work for them and this review isn't fake. I got a Visa Card from Merrick Bank a few months ago, and have been making my payments online on time with no problems. A couple of months ago, I decided to try and speed up my credit limit increase by making payments with my card and paying off the balance at the end of the month. Since then, I have been using the card and making full balance payments, then using it again and so on. Well, last month I had an incident in which I paid my account in full and when I went to use my card again, the account was on hold. I called them and they told me that due to the fact that there was some suspicious activity on my account, they had put a hold on it for security reasons. Imagine that!!! Paying off the balance is SUSPICIOUS!!!!! I was able to use the card again after that, and decided to do a little experiment. I waited about a week, and paid off half the accumulated balance on my account, and guess what? No problem using the card!!! Well, I got paid last week and decided to pay off the balance again, just to see what they would do, and sure enough, the bank had a problem with that.

As of 6/1/2014, the bank has not allowed me to use my card again, and even though I have called diligently everyday, they are unable to provide me with an explanation. I faxed in a letter from my bank, just like they asked, and they still won't release the account or give me an answer!!!! I am currently on the phone holding to speak to their so called SECURITIES department, and they have had me on hold for 53 minutes and counting!!! This bank is a scam!!! I applied for this card because I wanted to rebuild my credit. Most of the reviews I have read say that. The part I don't understand is how can you bash this bank, or any other bank for bad practices when most of the commenters admit to paying late or trying to make purchases that are more than your limit? REALLY?? That's "rebuilding credit"? This card, account, or any other bill I have is my responsibility to keep up with. Don't be lazy with your bills. A lesson that I have learned. Don't wait until the due date to make a payment when you know it will not post until the next business day. That's bad practice on your part. Cards work as if you had cash, so if you only had $100 in your pocket, what store on this planet would let you walk out with something that's $150? Okay... I say this with as much respect as possible... HELLO??? ARE YOU THAT DUMB. 2+2=4 to get you started on your mathematical journey.

I log in everyday to see when my statement is ready. I don't wait for emails or phone calls. Its MY responsibility. Not theirs to make sure my payments are made. If you don't have the money to pay it, then you need to learn how to manage your money, which is the reason you are in this mess. Come on!! First rule of building credit is paying your bills. Getting a better score means:

    Amount of credit you have
The balances owed toward that credit
The number of on time payments

How long your balances remain at a %.

If your credit is high, and your balance is low, that means you are in good shape. It also means you don't make purchases on credit that not emergencies (Amazon?). If you make your payments when your statements are received or ready, it WON'T BE LATE. You will have a better time frame if something was wrong, to handle it. Don't spend, pay. This will rebuild your credit. Capiche?

I called their customer service line. A friendly person helped me and explained that they put a 6 day hold on large payments. They release half and the other half in 6 days.

If I wanted the full balance available I need to have my bank fax them a before and after balance showing the payment was made. That is pretty ridiculous since I made the payment on their site directly from my bank account. I could see if I wrote them a check and they wanted to ensure it cleared but this is plain silly. Guess this is the price you pay for a sub-prime card. I will say again, the customer service agent was very friendly and wanted to help, not her fault at all, just a stupid policy.

This bank does exactly what it promises to do; provide anyone with a bad credit history another chance at rebuilding credit. If you follow instructions to a "T", you won't have any problems. Pay your bill every month at least 1 day before it's due and all will be well. Even better, set up automatic payments and you will NEVER have a problem. Try to tack on a few extra bucks every month and you will eventually pay this card off. The high interest rate is explained long before you sign on for credit so don't act surprised. Higher interest is an industry standard for consumers with bad credit. Read, read, read the agreement thoroughly before committing yourself and you won't have any excuses when you get hit with a penalty. I'm into my second year with this bank and haven't missed a payment or been late and they are living up to their end of the agreement. If you do this exactly as the agreement says you should, you won't have a problem.

First I say that I never have written a review for a company. Not bad or good review. It's not what I spend my time doing as a busy person. But I came cross this website for the review for Merrick Bank card and I was sad to see so many false lies being said. I was divorced and I was unemployed too for I lost my job because I was ill. And my credit was very bad for many years and nobody would give me a card or a loan. Well, I get the pre-screen offer from this company, Merrick Bank, and I say to my daughter, "Should I apply," and she is an attorney and she gave me the advice to go ahead. It's worth the shot.

I am so happy today that I did so. Because of this card, I have now another two major cards - Citibank and Capital One and just today, I applied and received approval for the American Express Delta card. This is because Merrick Bank card has helped me so much with improving my FICO score. I am in debt to them (it's only debt I have!) for their kindness to show me and to help me rebuild. Nobody was giving me a card but them and because I pay on time, and full balance, never at the last minute like so many others here have done so admittedly, I have perfect history with Merrick Bank card and they have increased my limit a lot of times.

Now, I have $5000 limit. I don't use the card as much because of high APR but you know what, they are putting their business at risk by giving cards to people with bad credit. Did you ever think about that, negative commenters? You have poor history for whatever reason because you pay late or don't pay, or like I was, just bad luck and things that go wrong, and who is going to trust you with 500 FICO? You should be ashamed. You come here and bash this company when no one else helps you. You're still up to old game of paying late! You don't learn your lessons and you want the bank to move sky for you so you cannot have the late fee when you pay the weekend before the day is due of payment? Come on now, please. It's not fair what you do.

I insist if you see this offer and you are needing to restart your FICO life, please, apply and use the card. In 6 months, I got first credit limit raised, double what I begun. It's a card for people who need to start over, not perfect credit. I don't know why you have card if you're so good a customer like so many reviews here have claimed. You pay late, max out, yes, you pay consequences. For people who are honest and responsible, you will have no problems. Never any issues with payments going through computer or by mail. Please, use common sense.

Should your business and ethical practices improve in the near future and your customers reviews begin to reflect as much, please feel free to try again. Be advised that I will not be retaining a copy of this offer for my files as the current copy had gone into the shredder. Thank you again for your consideration. I've held a secured Merrick Bank card for years (before it was even Merrick Bank) and my credit limit was always $400. I carried a balance for a year or so once I didn't go back to work after maternity leave, and then paid it off in full. They then raised my limit (my first increase in 5+ years) to $650. Still with a zero balance, I tried to make a purchase of $653.95 from Amazon and they declined it. I called to see if they could authorize the less-than-$4 overage and she said, "Nope, I can't do it. What's your email address for our records?" Wow... some "customer service." I won't close this card because I don't want to impact my credit, but I won't be using it again.

I called them to let them know that I sent it and they told me that since I made the payment after 4PM, I will still get a late fee added to my account. I think it's ridiculous if the payment is made on the due date and you still get charged a late fee because they don't see it posted on your account. They do need to fix the problems especially if everyone is complaining about the same thing.

Their slick flyer tells you that you were pre-screened based on your credit report, and then you are denied based on the exact same credit report. Despite payment more than the minimum due each month, my finance charges slowly but surely crept up, up, up. I finally decided to close my account. After talking with the customer service person, I almost gave up. I had to answer question after question: What was my last payment (duh, it's right in front of you), why won't you reconsider, etc. I became so irritated by these unnecessary questions that I wrote a check, paid in full and sent my payment with my cut up credit card and a personal note demanding to close my account.

The following month, I received a statement from Merrick Bank informing me that I had a credit balance of a little over $2! It took an additional two months of back and forth negotiations to finally have them send me a check for $2.31. I thought case closed, finally! No. A couple months later, I received an incentive invitation to apply my $2.31 to open a new account with a higher credit line and a lower finance rate. Does this company ever just go away?

Merrick Bank likes to play games with their secured credit card accounts when a consumer chooses to close the account. They will refuse to apply any security deposit you may have with them towards the outstanding balance on your account for at least 60 days. That is correct. They will hold your money hostage for 60 days on a closed account, attempting to force you to pay even another monthly payment, all the while forcing your utilization through the roof on the card to the credit bureaus if, for example, you closed it with a high balance and you were under the impression your security deposit will be immediately applied to the outstanding balance.

Also, there is no mention of the 60-day hold (in the card holder agreement) as applied to outstanding balances, as it seems to apply to any refund that may be due to the consumer after the security deposit is applied to an outstanding balance. I highly recommend that anyone even considering Merrick Bank secured card stay as far away from this credit card as possible because when it comes time to close it, Merrick Bank is nothing short of sore losers that like to play child-like games ... illegally, and fraudulently misappropriating consumers security deposits. I would not even rate them 1 star if given a choice.

On Nov 17, 2010, I received my statement from Merrick Bank. It listed payment due as November 12, 2010. On the next business day, November 18, 2010, I called their customer service and spoke with a Christine. I told her I just got my statement and I would send out a payment that day, November 18th 2010. I said as I just received the statement if they could waive any late charge, if any, that could occur. She said yes. I also asked if I could use my account normally. She said yes.

On November 21, I went to use my card at a store. It came up declined. I again called customer service on November 22, 2010. I explained what happened from the 17th incident until present time of this call. The customer rep looked at my account and said everything was fine, no hold, that I could use the account normally and that they don't hold an account until 60+ days past due. I again asked if everything was fine with the account for use. He stated yes.

On November 23 2010, I tried using my card again. Again, it came up declined. So once again I call customer service. This time, the rep states to me that she will have to transfer me to the department handling my account.

On the line comes Tom **. So I explain everything to this guy. He gives the standard 'I'm sorry' blah blah. He went on to say, "But that's correct. You didn't pay so we freeze your account." At this point, I was puzzled and explained to him everything that transpired from the 17th of November. He then says that I was given the wrong information by the customer service reps. That I didn't make a payment so that's that. We go round and round and he goes, "Well, what do you want me to do." I said to him to unfreeze my account as I was told twice that I could use it and waive any late fees as it wasn't my fault. I got the statement late.

He replied no, pure and simple. He said that I should take responsibility and that I know a payment is due on the 12th of every month that I should have made a payment. I said with what? A blank check and no statement? He told me there's nothing he can do. I said but I called twice and asked specifically about my account. It's not my fault their reps gave me the wrong information. If I was told right off the bat, 'Your account will be frozen until we receive a payment,' I wouldn't have tried using it in the first place.

Keep in mind I have never missed a payment with them and my balance is only $200.00. So it isn't like I owe them a lot of money or have a history of missing payments with these people. The minimum that is past due was $34.00. For $34.00, they freeze you? Sad. I said I called in good faith as soon as I received the bill to inform the bank that I was sending the payment. Tom goes, Well, that's just a comment listed on your account. It doesn't mean anything." At this point, I'm insulted by 'doesn't mean anything.' I had the decency to call them and explain what had happened and that a payment was coming and it doesn't mean anything? My phone calls following where I asked about my account and was told it was fine, means nothing?

On the late fee, he goes that he can't waive it because they had waived two prior already. Yes this is true. The 1st time was my fault as the payment did not get mailed out in time. The 2nd time, I had mailed it a week prior and they said they received it 24 hours late. I stated to Tom that if it was my fault, then yes, I have to pay a late fee. It's not my fault. I didn't get their statement until after the due date. Tom stated, "It isn't ours either. We have no control over the postal service." Which is true, but come on, look at the facts and not tell me that I'm wrong for not mailing them a payment out of the blue without a statement when their reps gave me wrong information twice. If they didn't make mistakes, then yes, throw stones and tell me I'm in the wrong.

Their entire attitude is "we don't care" and they all, every single person that represents this bank tells you, "You can close your account if your not happy." I have never heard this from other card companies. Others seem to want your business and strive to correct any issues. Not Merrick, they make you feel like you owe them a favor for doing business with them and that they could care less if you stayed on or not.

I called Merrick to review my statements with them, at which time they told me they could not look back further than 3 months. I have been unemployed and disabled with Multiple Sclerosis for some time. I was told by the "payment protection plan" that I had to be collecting unemployment in order to qualify for the program. Seeing that I had not worked due to disability in quite some time, this was not an option. I had paid the card with other resources over the years.

In reviewing my statements, it is apparent that the bulk of the problem is the annual fee, and overlimit fees associated with that. I will take responsibility for the late charges but it is their charges that kicked me over the credit line to begin with, not purchases. This is insane. I have paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars to them for one day late over the years.

Where was the "hardship program" when I was calling months ago? Merrick has made millions and millions of dollars on the hardship of other people. After five days and confirming the funds were taken out of my account via electronic deposit, the funds were not available. When I called the bank I was told it takes them ten days to place the funds back on the card, but if I wanted them to do it faster I would have to get a statement from my banking proving the money was taken out of my account and fax this to them? I refused, and spoke with a supervisor and indicated that it was unfair to pay a bill and then have to wait ten days to be credited when my bank clearly showed the funds were taken out of the account.

This is something this bank does often. It is even more unnerving because we have due dates and can't be irresponsible with paying our bills past a certain day, why is it legal for this bank to hold on to electronic funds for ten days. I explained to them that I need the money credited for an emergency and their response was poor. With electronic deposits it is my understanding the money takes less than a day and the Merrick bank knew I had already paid the bill but refused to release the credited funds. This is ridiculous and should STOP.

Electronic payments not credited until 10 days after clearance. When I checked on line to find out why was charged $6.95; though payments were received well in advance of the due date, I was charged daily interest while they put a hold on the funds. Was charged an over-limit fee, while they were holding my payment. FYI- the funds cleared the next day.

I know I am not the only person who has complaints about this credit card issuer - not really a bank - because I have seen Web sites devoted to it.

I have had a credit card with this "bank" for several years and recently received a notice that my interest rate was going up to 35%. I called to ask about it and to request that it be lowered. The individual I spoke to said "we are not lowering interest rates." No explanation.

Anyway, I asked that my account be closed. It's an old story - they are preying upon individuals who may not have great credit ratings.

There should be some kind of law against these insane interest rates. Not sure if anything can be done about it.

I had a zero balance on this account for over a year. This credit company charged me $8:00 a month for finance charges though I had a zero balance. For one reason or other the $8 or $9:00 was unpaid by my Bank in April. Before then, I had called the credit company to close the account. They did not close the account and were still charging me finance charges for nothing. I HAD ZERO BALANCE!!!!! I was accessed late charges of $30:00 which I paid.

This credit company still reported me to the credit bureau as being late in APRIL 2005. I HAD ZERO BALANCE. I had a clean record of paying them on time over the years. I AM REQUESTING THAT THIS LATE PAYMENT BE TAKEN OFF MY CREDIT HISTORY IMMEDIATELY. This is unfair and ridiculous.

For the past 2 months I have been harrassed on the telephone even on Sunday, today September 28th, I received 3 calls. They are afraid to get on the answering machine. They are harrassing me about overlimit and late fees that I have disputed but they continue to put them on my bill. They wait to post my payment until the day after the due date, so they can charge a late fee. When I talked to them I told the person I was on the do not call list and they replied hatefully that it did not apply to them, although their calls were to try to sell me a "Back on Track Program".

Why should I want to do that when the erroneous late fee and overlimit fee charges were their doing. I am 76 years old and told the person to stop calling me as I did not feel like fooling with them being in ill health. According to the Department of Aging thay can only call you twice a week and must stop when told to, they laughed at me.

Last night I received two phone calls from a representative of Merrick Bank.
They asked to speak to my husband Kevin who was not at home at the time. In the first call
I was given a message for my husband. The woman was

rude and said that she had called several times and he had not called back.

I have never taken a message from her and there had been none on the machine. The second call was an hour later
The woman refused to give a name or number but I identified the source of the call by the caller ID. She asked when
my husband would be home. I said I would not tell her but I would take a message and he would call back. She said that she
would not leave a message but would "keep calling until she spoke to him" I said that unless she could give me a good reason I did not see why

I should tell her when or where she could reach my husband.

I had a Visa card granted by NEXTBANK for about 2 years. I was using this card to pay my MSN internet subscription bill. I was then offered a card with far better interest rates which I applied for and received. Then, in one day I cancelled my Nextcard both by phone and in writing and called MSN to have them start using my new Visa card account-which they did.

Now somewhere along the line Nextcard rolled my account over to this company called Merrick Bank of New York state.

This Merrick bank then sent me a bill saying that they paid my MSN internet access acount. The account number they assigned to me ends with: ****6215. I also got a bill from my new visa card company (MBNA) saying that they paid my MSN bill. My card number with them ends with:****9196. So, I called MSN and they had been paid by the Visa company (MBNA) that I had selected.

I then called this Merrick bank number and got only an automated response wherein I had to punch in my ...'credit number'. So, I read the number off of the bill I was holding and they said that "this account has not been opened. Press (some number) to open the account." I just hung the phone up because there were no other options given.

I accessed the internet site for this Merrick bank and filed a dispute. They sent me the complaint form. I filled it out and sent it in. I got another bill from them. I went through the complaint process again. I got another bill. Now I have their bill collecters calling me demanding payment.!...

    1. I did not apply for or activate Merricks card.
    2. Merrick says that they paid MSN when in fact they did not.

    3. I can not get anyone exept bill collectors on the phone when I call Merrick Bank.

When Merrick Bank bought out Next Card, they acquired my account. I didn't receive statements, or my new card. The various employees I spoke with refused to give me my account number or any information. My address was verified several times, both over the phone and in writing and was confirmed correct. I spoke with yet another person, who informed me that the apartment number was missing off of their records.

This account was in good standing before they took it over. All the employees I spoke with were not only rude, but they refused to help me. I asked for payment arrangements to be made, for statements to be sent and for my account number so I could at least have internet access. All were denied, but according to the last person I spoke to, by his own admission, the company was in the wrong.

I was avid about getting my payments to Nextcard on time. I had their card for about 6 months, (acct # 4120 6180 0132 3860), without one late payment and noticed that my statement had a late fee of $35.00 and my interest rate jumped form 9 percent to 24.99 percent. I called Nextcard, in which they stated that my payment was received one day after the due date. I very much dispute this and cancelled my account on the spot. I received another bill for my balance which stated $1,177.00 including the late fee. I mailed them a check for $1,177.00 to pay it off completely.

Two months goes by and I recieve a bill for $77.00 for late fees. I called them again in which they stated again that they received my payment one day after the due date. I went through the whole story again to the person on the phone, they said they would take it to a supervisor, who will contact me in three days. I never heard from anyone. I then get a bill from Merrick Bank for $107.50 for outstanding balance. I spoke to at least six people whom all said they will look into it. I got a call from another person at about 8:00 pm. I told them they where rediculous, she sounded sympathetic and said she would get her manager Julie, I believe. This assumed Supervisor told me she would get this taken care of but that I should pay this amount up front.

I told her that I did not trust sending money to them. She said she would take care of it and gave me her number. I did not hear from her for over a week, so I called the number only to find it is Merrick Banks customer service line and that there are no Supervisors named Julie there. Yesterday, (Saturday Oct 26th, 2002), I got a call from a very rude person from Merrick Bank demanding payment. I hung up the phone on them. I also got another bill yesterday for the new amount of $145.49, all late fees and my interest rate is now at 35 percent!!!Please stop these crooks.

I was accessed an annual fee to my account. I choose to pay the account off and not pay the annual fee. So, I called and closed the account on 5/15/00. Paid all of the charges off by the due date. However, Merrick Bank is saying that I used the card during period in which the annual fee was accessed thus I accepted responsibiltiy to pay the annual fee. This is not what the cardholder agreement states. It states that you may use the card during a 30 period once the annual fee is accessed, without incurring responsibility to pay the Annual Fee.

I have tried to read this to there collection people on numberous occasions. However they keep saying I have to pay and usually hang when I say I wont pay. They say I am destroying my credit. I have been dealing with them for the last 5 months. I have names of numerous people who said the account would be credited and that I did not owe any money. However, the people in collections, will not here this namely Nick Money and Joanne Sacco. They insist that I must pay and now the account balance is over $250 dollars, because of late fees and other charges they have accessed to the account. Please help me. These people are rude, unlawful, disrespectful and just downright dishonest. Please protect me and other consumers from them. I have all of my statements and letters from them.

Some on the payees I specify receive their payments before the due date, since Sanwa does do guarantee they will not deliver earlier. However,Merrick Bank payments are always posted several days after the Bank guarantees delivery.
