How does Avant work?

Avant, formerly AvantCredit, is an online lender based in Chicago. It offers personal loans for a range of purposes, such as debt consolidation, emergencies and home improvement. It also offers a credit card that’s designed to help people with fair credit build their credit.

Avant personal loans

Avant’s personal loans range between $2,000 and $35,000 and have terms ranging from two to five years. You can get your money as quickly as the next business day after approval. Its loans are unsecured, which means they don’t require collateral.

Checking your loan options only requires a soft credit check, which doesn’t hurt your credit. However, if you choose to continue the application, Avant performs a hard credit inquiry, which can temporarily lower your credit score by a few points.

Avant credit cards

Avant offers an unsecured credit card that’s designed to help customers improve their credit history. Unlike other credit-building cards, which are typically secured cards, this card doesn’t require a security deposit. However, because it’s an unsecured card, applicants will generally need at least a fair credit score, or a FICO score between 580 and 669.

The application process is simple, and customers can see if they qualify without a hard credit inquiry. Avant's online portal allows for 24/7 payments, and it offers a minimum credit limit of $300 and a maximum credit limit of $3,000.

Avant rates and fees

Avant is generally transparent about its costs and fees. All rates and fees are accurate as of March 6, 2026.

Avant loan rates and fees

Avant's APRs fall between 9.95% and 35.99%. The company charges its APR based primarily on your credit score. For those with a lower credit score, Avant loan rates are comparable with what you can find at similar companies.

Its loans have an administration fee of up to 9.99%. There is no prepayment penalty if you want to pay your loan off early.

Avant credit card rates and fees

Avant credit cards generally have a variable APR ranging from 29.99% to 35.99%. They also have an annual fee ranging from $0 to $125. For approved AvantCard applications submitted through its website, the card will have an annual fee ranging from $39 to $75.

Its credit cards also have a cash advance fee of $10 or 3%, whichever is greater. It doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees or overlimit fees, though its cards have a late fee of up to $39 and a returned payment fee of up to $25.

Avant FAQ

Is Avant a legitimate loan company?

Yes, Avant is a legitimate company that offers personal loans and credit cards. It’s licensed with the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS) (#1246731) and its credit products are issued by WebBank, which is a Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) member. WebBank originates Avant’s credit products, while Avant or one of its partners services its products.

What credit score do you need for an Avant loan?

Avant states that most of its loan customers have a credit score between 600 to 700. For context, a FICO score of 580 to 669 is a fair credit score, while a score of 670 to 739 is a good credit score. However, it may accept scores as low as 580.

Is Avant hard to get approved for?

An Avant loan or credit card may be hard to get approved for depending on your credit history and personal finances. For either product, you’ll typically need at least a fair credit score, or a FICO score of 580 to 669. If you have bad credit or no credit history, you’ll generally want to look at a different lender that specializes in products for these credit profiles.

Still have questions?

Is Avant worth it?

Avant can be a good option for someone who doesn’t have the best credit but is looking for an unsecured loan or credit card. Using a credit card or paying off a loan responsibly can help build your credit. However, people with good to excellent credit scores will typically find better loan terms and credit card offers elsewhere.

Stay far far far away!! They are terrible about communicating, paying them or paying them off is like fighting tooth and nail!! Their customer service and payment center is the worst I have ever dealt with! I highly advise anyone looking at getting a loan or credit card with them to run as fast as you can in the other direction! There are other lenders out there!

I used a new credit card with a low balance transfer to pay off my Avant card. Over 2100.00 payment made to them. They have mysteriously not been able to locate the payment, after sending them reference numbers, escalation letters, the ACH electronic deposit numbers all from the other credit card company that paid the balance. I have called everyday for a month, now had to make two extra payments so not to be late and ding my credit. Avant customer service has done nothing, puts me on hold for 20 plus minutes and tells me that they cannot find it or do anything about it. I have contacted the BB to try and help me resolve this.

I’ve had an extremely frustrating and disappointing experience with Avant. This company shows little to no consideration for customers facing real-life hardships. I run a mobile detailing business, so my income depends heavily on weather conditions. During the heavy rain seasons each year in my area, I’m unable to work consistently. This past year has been especially difficult due to repeated storms and even equipment damage, which caused me to fall behind on payments.

What’s most concerning is that I’ve been proactive the entire time. I’ve called Avant multiple times each month, explained my situation clearly, and tried to stay in communication. Every time, I’m told they will “submit a request” to waive late fees—but every single request has been denied. On top of that, I have documented screenshots showing inconsistencies on my account, including instances where Avant applied credits and then later reversed those credits. This raises serious concerns about account accuracy and internal handling of customer balances.

Despite my efforts to communicate and resolve this responsibly, I continue to be charged late fees that make it even harder to catch up. It feels like the system is designed to keep customers behind—paying interest and penalties instead of making real progress on their balance. Other credit card companies I’ve worked with have shown flexibility and basic understanding. They’ve occasionally reversed late fees to help me get back on track. Avant, on the other hand, consistently falls back on “policy” with no willingness to support customers during temporary hardship. Yes, I understand the agreement outlines late fees—but where is the accountability when errors occur on the account? And where is the customer support when someone is actively trying to resolve their situation?

At this point, I am considering escalating this further, including filing a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau and exploring additional options. Consumers should be aware of how rigid and unhelpful this company can be when you actually need assistance. If you’re considering Avant, be cautious. They may be quick to charge fees, but don’t expect flexibility, support, or consistent account handling when life happens.

Today, March 26, 2026 I use the app to make a payment. I accidentally typed in $550 instead of $50. When I realized the mistake I tried to cancel the payment with the app and it said cannot cancel payment so I called the company directly with the number on the credit card, they said they could not cancel the credit card payment because it was past the time since I made the payment in other words more than a few minutes. I swear I made the payment at 2:34 and called them at 2:36 PM. Two minutes? It’s a $500 mistake and they won’t fix it. I asked them can they just change it to $50. They said no.

This is the worst Credit Card, the worst Bank, the worst thing to have in your wallet. If you have it get rid of it, they stink. On top of that every time I go to use the credit card it’s the kind I have to call them each time and then they say, "Oh it’s just a computer error. Let us reset the card for you. Wait a few minutes." I asked them how many minutes do I have to wait. They said, "We don’t know." I wait a half hour, try the card again and it’s still declined. I call them again and they do the same thing. "Oh sir, we will reset the card for you," and it never works. They can take the money but they will not let you use your credit card. Please get rid of these people. They suck. And for those are you reading this review? I am always up-to-date on my credit cards. I never have a late payment and I am not over the limit by any means.

Awful! I keep paying over my minimum payment, and the amount I owe doesn’t go down!! I feel like I’m getting scammed. I never had a card like that. I’m so stressed out, it’s awful. I can’t wait to pay it off and close it. I do not even care that it’ll lower my credit score at this point. It’s like a nightmare with this card.

What a shady company. After being with them for over a year, they slapped me a $8.99 monthly fee and read my APR by 6% to 35.99%. For no reason at all. So decided to get a 0% APR U.S. Bank credit card for balance transfers up to 24 months. Now I have a better credit card with no monthly fees and smaller APR. Bye-bye Avant.

Beware. Make sure you know this company before you start dealing with them. I have been with Avant 5-6 years and today I am happy to say I am cutting my card and my account with these overcharging crooks. When I started no monthly fee. Now a fee, this Fee I have never agreed to have. Any opportunity to place a fee or damage credit they are there to hurt you any way they can. This company should be reported.
