By far the greatest service I've ever received at opticals was at this location. I came here for a check-up, contacts, and lenses. Long story short, my insurance was messed up, and as a result, my glasses couldn't be invoiced appropriately. My insurance was resolved after two months. Yevette and Alla worked very hard with me to get everything cleared up so that I could obtain the greatest offer possible. They followed up, took notes in my chart, and didn't leave anything out. Thank you to everyone at this store for providing such quick and polite service. I 100% recommend!

The lovely ladies at Sterling helped me out while I was extremely stressed out from breaking my glasses. They were so patient with me and helped me get new frames and get them adjusted in 1 day! Called me back the next day as everything was ready, and I came in to pick them up. Fantastic friendly service! Thank you!

I have been going to Sterling Optical for 2 years since I moved to Brooklyn. Have had glasses, temporary contact lenses for snorkeling, and more recently referred for vitrectomy and cataracts. The front desk people always remember me no matter how long I have been in. Roxy is easy to talk to and I totally trust her advice. The care is personal and tailored. Highly recommend to anyone.

First-class service and optometry needs in a great location. Have purchased several glasses from the team at Sterling Optical, and Kings Plaza Mall is my favorite location - everyone here is always fantastic to deal with. Great advice as well, no hard sell and genuinely care. Very competitive and have a huge range of top brands and really rare but fantastic lenses. Kudos to the team, and Alla in particular.

What a lovely team and an excellent level of customer service. They have a beautiful range of chic stylish sunglasses and very helpful staff. I have two young children and the staff was wonderful with them when I was choosing glasses. The advice given is helpful and honest, and they are very customer-oriented. I feel the service is very personalized which is refreshing nowadays with so many large retailers around, it is lovely to have a more personalized service. I will certainly be using them as my opticians as well as for any future glasses purchase. The staff member I dealt with, Roxy, was extremely helpful. Many thanks for the great service.

The Dr. examining me farted. Didn’t say anything. The person writing up my order said to me, “I see you always get the cheapest glasses”. I said last time I got glasses they were $400.00. Also the three other people working in this office, stood around talking loudly about personal stuff and laughing so loud I heard them in the exam room. These things are rude, unprofessional. I get my contacts from America’s Best always.

We paid for glasses then they closed down and with no notice or call they held my daughter’s glasses for 6 months and offered no compensation. The Spanish woman at the front seat is very rude and and is uneducated in what the company has to offer. She has no customer service skills and I have felt with this company for 23 years always happy. She made the experience horrible for me and my family and when I asked about compensation for the glasses being held hostage they rudely said it’s not their problem. She then shrugged her shoulders and walked away. Some people need to be held accountable for the way they treat the customer and I am never one for complaining.

I have been a loyal and satisfied customer of Sterling Optical (located in the Tysons Corner Center Mall in McLean, Virginia) for well over a decade. I was first drawn to the particular store by their high quality and wide selection of attractive eyewear frames. Throughout the years, whenever it was time to replace my lenses with a newer prescription, repair a clumsily abused set of eyeglasses or simply change “my look,” the staff of Sterling Optical at Tysons always proved attentive to my needs and very helpful in guiding my frame ware selection.
Seeking a series of sophisticated high index, progressive lenses that conformed to my unique poor eyesight/high correction requirements (and evolving tastes) never proved a problem. The highly professional and competent optical technicians would patiently and meticulously explain to me all the options available, while carefully pointing out all of the practical pros and cons of each available lens option.
Every time my eyewear selection was completed; and my lens’ technical options were decided; and all of my critical optical measurements were double checked, the Sterling Optical staff would politely and pleasantly concluded my purchase transaction. In all cases, my eyeglasses would be exactingly manufactured and made available for pick up and final fitting within the promised time frame.
SPECIAL NOTE: Most recently during the Covid-19 Pandemic, I had broken one of my eyeglass lenses in an unfortunate slip and fall incident. Leery of entering Tysons Mall during this period of escalating virus infection rates, I weighed my limited options. Bleary eyed, I donned a face mask and marched into Tysons Center, choosing the social distancing security blanket of a lower occupancy, weekday morning opening hour.
Arriving early, I cautiously waited at a safe distance from the still locked storefront security gate. I watched as the Senior Optical Technician and Store Manger “Eric” appeared to meticulously inspect the cleanliness of the store’s interior and, when finished, opened the security gate precisely at 11:00AM. Greeting me with friendly smiling eyes and a fresh face mask (while standing behind a Plexiglas buffer), Eric once again began the process of addressing all of my eyewear woes. As in the past, Eric handled himself in the most professional and friendly manner. My anxiety drifted away and a sense of relief relaxed my Covid-19 induced tension.
Once my new glasses arrived, I reentered Tysons Mall while wearing contact lenses and picked up my eyeglasses in a virtual masked flash. Once home, I removed my contacts and tried on my beautiful shiny new spectacles. Oh my goodness! My ophthalmologist (independent and wholly unrelated to Sterling Optical) wrote me a completely defective, pre-pandemic prescription. I could barely see out of my new eyeglasses. Angry at my doctor’s error, I arranged to have the my eye doctor immediately substitute and update last year’s correct prescription.
A few days later, corrected prescription in hand, I once again approached Eric during Sterling Optical’s security gate opening time. Barely concealing a sincere empathetic smile behind his fresh face mask, Eric confirmed that, occasionally, doctors do make mistakes. He explained to me that, under such circumstances, Sterling Optical offers a 60 day eyewear return and remanufacturing policy, free of charge! Now I wait for my truly corrected lenses, with a big smile under my face mask. No mystery on why I remain a loyal and satisfied customer of Sterling Optical. Thanks Eric! Stay healthy.

Rude, unprofessional staff. Billed medical insurance instead of taking vision copay for eye exam, after I adamantly told them they were incorrect, and I noted it on intake paperwork not to bill medical. Next, they coded a wrong reason for my next eye exam appointment for glasses, then argued with me as to the reason for the appointment when I arrived. Doctor did perform exam and apologized for their mistake.
"Sales" staff was pushy. Tried to sell me something for diabetics when reviewing my selections and vision insurance coverage. I am not, nor have ever been diabetic and corrected her. Said they would contact me when glasses were ready. Never heard from them. Followed up weeks later. Verified total balance due twice. Was assured of balance and told there were no other charges.
Discovered office moved, but they had not notified customers. Went to new location. Paid balance. Again verified balance was paid in full. Picked up glasses. Now, months later, billed for eye exam not paid by medical that should have been a vision copay. Called to dispute bill. Asked for name of person I was speaking to after heated discussion. Was hung up on. Will never go there again.

About two weeks ago, I went to Sterling Optical on Hylan. I’ve been to numerous eyeglass stores before, including privately owned stores and franchises however my experience with the staff members here was amazing! A young lady Lauren made my visit enjoyable. She really went out of her way in explaining the different kinds of frames that were in my budget and also provided me with other options as well. I appreciated her patience- this was my first time getting glasses so I was definitely a fish out of water and had no idea what I was looking for.
Most importantly she was respectful and honest when I asked her opinion on the different frames I tried on and she certainly wasn't telling me what I wanted to hear. I highly recommend future four eyes to go to Sterling Optical on Hylan where the people there are just so genuine! I could tell Lauren loves her position and it was so refreshing to see that since the stores I went prior to this were pretty awful in regards to customer service. hope this helps in your future decision for a store. :)

The store at Rockaway mall in Morris County NJ filed a claim for glasses for me which were NOT the glasses I requested. I needed to fill the bi-focals so I could drive and they got me new readers instead hence using up my benefit for 2 years. So now I can’t drive because they screwed up. They would not give me the name of the people who filed for these glasses so I could put in a formal complaint because they say HIPAA laws say they can’t tell me. Ummm this is MY ACCT that you used to get money for something I did not order and now I can’t get glasses. I got a letter from my insurance which clearly states they requested coverage for something I did not request!

I would not recommend Sterling Optical in Ithaca. Rebecca, the store manager(?)'s customer service is awful and she does not uphold policies clearly written on her store's receipt and on the store's website. Read for more information. I went into Sterling Optical last Thursday (May 4, 2017). My glasses had broken and I needed a new pair. The lady at the front desk was very nice and doing her best to help, but the manager(?) of the store, Rebecca, was very unprofessional. I was trying to talk to her and instead of coming to the front to talk to me, she was yelling to me from her office in the back.
Eventually, I did get a new pair of glasses from Sterling Optical, but was unhappy with how they looked. Both the receipt and the website said that while glasses cannot be returned, that store credit would gladly be issued regardless of the situation. I called the store on Monday (May 8, 2017) and they told me that store credit was only given if there was a defect with the glasses. I told the lady who answered the phone that the receipt said no such thing, nor did the website. That did not get me anywhere - she continued to tell me that the policy about store credit was only applicable if there was a defect with the glasses, but again the receipt nor the website did not support that. Again - Rebecca's customer service is awful (but at least her staff are friendly and try their best to help) and they do not uphold policies clearly written on their receipt and on their website.

The moment I walked in I had the feeling I made a mistake. Women behind the counter were very aggressive in a way that you don't see at optometrists. The doctor examined me without the least bit of friendliness--when she left she didn't say one word. She turned and walked back to her office. I was given a pair of contact lens to try before I ordered. It took me a while to try them and once I did I realized I couldn't see close up at all, couldn't see my iphone or read at all. I went back to Sterling Optical Kings Plaza to tell them. As I walked in the women behind the counter looked unhappy to see me. I told her my issue. She looked at my receipt and said, "You had the appointment in Feb and now it is May." I apologized. I told her no one said there was a limit on when to return. It felt that they make up rules as they go. She had no explanation as to why. She was upset that it took me so long to come back. She said something that made no sense at all.
The doctor then took me in the room to re-measure me. Although I had these exact lens before she asked if it was the first time. I tried to explain my situation and soon realized that she was very hostile towards me. I tried to explain what the issue was with the test lens but she wouldn't give me a chance to talk--it was obvious she was angry. She said, "I guess your former doctor would assist you in a better manner" or words to that effect. I never mentioned my former doctor at this visit. I walked out. DON'T GO TO THIS PLACE. Their customer service is abhorrent and manners are terrible. I felt like I was being ripped off from the moment I walked in. Policies are not explained but they seem to just make it up as they go. The receipt they give you has nothing written on it with Sterling policies. They never gave me the prescription. I completely wasted my money and will have to find a new place to obtain my lens. Don't go to this place.

They know me each time I walk in and treat me with respect which is a great customer relations. I have always had a good experience when going there. My appointments are always on time and done in a quick and timely fashion. My vision is the best since going there. I have been to another chain (won't mention any names) but they really messed up my eyes to the point I had to go to an eye specialist to correct the problem. Here at Sterling I have NEVER had any problems with getting fitted for my correct vision. I recommend them to all my friend. Well done Sterling!! See you my next eye appointment.

Went to this site for contact lens fitting for my sons. After the "Doctor of optometry" (not an MD) examined them, she said she only prescribes daily lenses for any kids under 16. I asked her why, which she said kids are not responsible and get more infections. She was worried about her license if they got an infection. I asked her for any research which would back that up but she had no response. I expressed my concerns for cost as well which she was not sensitive about. I left stating I would see how my sons handled the responsibility and would discuss at follow-up.
At the follow-up, I told her the kids did great and that they showed great hygiene with handling lenses. I asked her to reconsider since they did well. She then stated that they BOTH had allergies in their eyes. This after they had just been seen by their well respected pediatric ophthalmologist, an actual MD, who over 12 years had not ever mentioned allergies in their eyes. Mind you, they have never complained of itchy or watery eyes. She would not offer even one more cost effective alternative. She told us she was done talking to us and left. I spoke to the manager the next day to no avail. FYI, after researching this "doctor," she attended the one of the worst rated optometry schools which is in Puerto Rico. Buyer beware.

I bought a pair of non-prescription (off the shelf, NON-custom order) sunglasses at the Sterling store in the mall in Ithaca NY. Due to the lighting conditions in the store, it was difficult to see myself in the mirror. When I got out to the parking lot car and looked in my car mirror, I decided to return the glasses. The store, however, declined to reimburse the money paid, stating that it was store policy to only give a store credit. I live in a different state and was only in Ithaca for a few more days. None of the other items in the store were of interest to me. The store indeed had a sign advising of its no returns policy, but it was placed on the back wall and not at the counter where customers pay and might more readily see it. The receipt also stated the no returns policy, but it was handed to me in an envelope and I did not immediately open the envelope to look at the receipt when I paid.
I consider this way of doing business intentionally deceitful. I later also compared the price of the sunglasses I had purchased with the price online. I had paid about double the online price. I understand that retail stores are struggling to compete with the internet these days. However, their store policy is not doing Sterling's any favors in the long run. Stay away.

STAY AWAY! from the Menlo Park Mall (NJ) location - I wish someone would have warned ME. This place needs to be shut down. They take advantage of clients and expect you to be an idiot! Despite the fact I have a vision plan, I was told I had to pay for my exam since the Dr performed an additional test on.. funny though, since I did not authorize any additional tests and was under the influence I was taking the standard test. During my test, I kept stating that neither choice (option 1 or option 2, etc) was clear but was told to "just pick one". So assuming a Dr knows their stuff I continued. Lenses were ordered, which took a pretty long time honestly - over a week. Finally when I was called to come in, I tried the glasses on and you know that nauseous feeling you get when wearing someone else's prescription glasses? I experienced this because they were WAY OFF! I could not see a thing and felt as if I was going to vomit.
I exclaimed my issue only to be told to "take them home for a week and try them out." I am not an idiot and one knows when they can see or not.. I said no I want to redo my exam. Not only did they send me to the SAME clueless Dr, even though they were technically REQUIRED to send me to a DIFFERENT Doctor for a second opinion, but again dealing with same person I was given a runaround while sitting in the exam seat. The Dr made me feel so awkward, failing to apologize but instead making it seem like I was wrong for not being able to see from her failed attempt at prescribing me. Even though I felt so uncomfortable, I left with them yet again ordering a completely DIFFERENT prescription than before and was told I had to wait yet another week.
I could not sleep and so the next day I called to simply cancel stating I did not feel comfortable doing business with this place. I was first lied to by a representative telling me "you can't cancel, the prescription is already cut for the glasses." I declared how this was impossible considering they were JUST ordered and called her out on lying. I was then thrown around from rep to rep, with the greedy manager talking about me loudly and clearly in the background "does she not realize we pay rent here in this mall, tell her there nothing can be done, she already gave us cash" - I assume he thought I was on hold?? I was outraged!!!
I asked to speak with him so I could let him know he cannot talk about customers in that manner but he refused to talk to me and I was told that I could NOT get my money back because there was nothing they could do so I 'may as well just take them" - even if they are not my prescription??? I was appalled by the service and lack of professionalism at this terrible location. They need to be SHUT DOWN since they are basically ROBBING the public. I was told I could NOT be given my money back from my deposit and that "I should not have provided so much cash" - FUNNY THOUGH since I was REQUIRED to make a certain deposit. Now those morons have money - money that was traded for a service that was NOT provided... That's robbery. I may as well have been mugged in an alley or lost the money from my pocket.
My goal is to spread the word so this does not happen to anyone else. Please pass this information on so they do not take advantage of another customer like they did with me and HOPEFULLY that "rent" he pays there in that mall becomes too expensive from the lack of customers he has. It's a franchise he OWNS so I could not even fight this with corporate. TERRIBLE and UNETHICAL! They should be ASHAMED of themselves.

They gave me broken glasses. The sales people said it wasn't their responsibility. The part that winds around my ear is painful and unhinged but they would not order me a free replacement. They said it was just how it is. I will likely try to order another pair because I like the frames (and the price--I'm unemployed right now) but they keep saying after only a year I have to get examined. I shouldn't have to. If I want a duplicate pair, I should be able to order it without them giving me crap. They definitely are more interested in talking to each other than actually giving my concerns attention but I don't go there to make friends. I need CHEAPIE glasses because of my situation.
Be careful of condescension and overall lack of customer service. It's as if they hate their jobs and resent me being there. The funny part was the one guy saying "you need to watch out for macular degeneration" and I'm young! Just give me my glasses! He talked to me like I was some old lady. I will put up with imperfect glasses and people because like I said, I'm in a money slump. But when I get out, I'll go somewhere of quality. I hate when sales people look at you like you're a nuisance. You have a job, maybe not your dream job, but smiling once in a whole might be nice. AND IF A FRAME IS BUSTED IT SHOULD NOT BE MY PROBLEM.
I'm going back one more time to convince them to order my duplicate but I'd prefer to handle it over the phone since they're kind of annoying. For reference, the other Sterling I went to for a quick adjustment was better. The problematic one is in a mall.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUSINESS. Groupon rate of $55.00 for eye exam and 3 month supply of contacts was advertised. I called the store to make an appt prior to purchasing and store rep said they will honor the Groupon rate. I told them I wear Acuvue brand and the owner said the contacts showing on Groupon rate is for "Sterling Brand contacts." I told him I wear Acuvue but I will try it since it's included with the promotion. After the eye exam, the doc told me Sterling contacts are only one diameter size and it doesn't fit with my eyes. So at this point, I need to pay $95 for ANOTHER eye exam specifically for Acuvue that I have been wearing forever.
At this point, I just told her to give me my prescription for the exam she fitted me for and she refused. The owner then told me she will just write the script to take with me when I make the payment for $55 (without the Sterling brand contacts). As soon as he charged my card for $55, the doc said "I cannot write you any script and I cannot authorize the Sterling brand either. But if you pay $95, I will fit you for Acuvue." At the end of the day, the only thing the owner gave me was a piece of paper showing my eyesight and told me that's a legitimate prescription. $55 later, I have no contacts and no prescription to go elsewhere. I just realized this is the reason the store didn't want me to purchase through Groupon and I can't even get the money back from them.

Sterling Optical, Bay Shore, NY sold me used glasses with the wrong lenses. I ordered Crizal lenses. All of my glasses have Crizal lenses. When I picked them up, they failed to give me the authenticity card and cloth. I overlooked this, giving them the benefit of the doubt; after wearing them just a short time, I could tell these absolutely were not Crizal lenses. I called Sterling Optical and told them, and their response was, "oh, okay, we will order the Crizal and call you when they are in." They totally KNEW that gave me cheap lenses and were caught in their shady maneuver.
The frames also seemed out of whack, the arms of the glasses were all stretched out. At first I tried to overlook it, telling myself it was not that bad. But as I wore the glasses, they were so loose and out of whack, especially on the left side, they would fall off my face. There is NO way these were new glasses. I 100% believe Sterling Optical sold me used glasses. They are a shady business! I called them about this and of course they won't admit it, but they lied about the lenses -- and I absolutely believe they are lying about the glasses being new too.

My experience with the Ithaca, NY Sterling Optical has been bad from the beginning. I went to select a pair of frames, and found that the selection was very poor with a lot of cheap brands. The display frames were filthy as if a hundred dirty hands had handled each one, and the store generally very unclean.
I was followed closely around by someone in training, who obviously had no idea what she was doing. She could not answer any questions and did not seem to know anything about the frames; she wasn't interested in helping me but in following me closely as if I were about to steal something. I did make a selection of a frame, but was looking for a smaller size. The person behind the main counter said that frame didn't come in any other size, however when I went back to looking at the display, I found two other sizes of this model. This person could not place an order for me or answer any other questions, so I was wondering why they were at the front desk. The other three customer service reps in the store also seemed not very knowledgeable about what they were doing and were unprofessional.
I placed an order and was told it would take up to 7 days. Two weeks later, no glasses, and no one at the store can tell me the status. One customer rep could not operate the computer to look up my account. One kept putting me on hold when I called, and never got back to me, even when I called back. One rep said they looked up my order, but called me by another person's name so that I did not feel they really looked up my order. Big mistake to order from this store (and I will not return to Sterling Optical). I have lost confidence that I will receive these glasses and also that they will be the correct prescription. Don't go here for your glasses. This is by far one of the most poorly-run businesses I have ever made the mistake of going to. Terrible customer service, rude manager, and if you are in need if quality eyeglasses look elsewhere. I attempted to resolve my issues with the store manager and she did nothing. She was so rude and did not seem to care about losing a customer. Don't take it from just me though, look them up in BBB's report and you will see for yourself. Run out of Sterling Optical and take your money elsewhere. Here is my whole story:
I ordered a complete pair of glasses from Sterling in August.. Weeks later when I was walking by the store one of their associates ran out and stopped me. She said "I have bad news... We can't get the frames you wanted, but you can pick out another pair." I informed her I was not interested in picking out another pair and would like a refund. Then she turned me over to the manager so the manager could tell me there was a strict non-refund policy. How can this be considered a refund when I have not received the product I ordered. 600.00 later I still have a charge for this "phantom" pair of glasses I never received.

I have been going to Sterling Optical for years. All four members of my family wear glasses or contacts. The last time I went to them my PD was measured incorrectly resulting in lenses that made me dizzy, caused headaches and made me nauseous. I returned to the store three times to have them adjusted (not knowing anything about PD) each time I went, I was told that there was nothing wrong with the lenses and that I would adjust. I struggled and after a few weeks just started wearing my old glasses. I was not aware that someone MANUALLY measured my PD, no machine was used nor we're my records for every previous year checked against the NEW measurement the woman got. Your PD could change over time, but only at most by 1mm.
This new measurement was 3mm different than ever before. AGAIN, NO ONE EVER BOTHERED TO CHECK THE NEW AGAINST THE OLD, NOR ANY PREVIOUS PRESCRIPTION, EVEN WHEN I REPEATEDLY RETURNED TO THE STORE TO HAVE THEM ADJUSTED. The lenses could have been redone in the first 30 days, but as they continued to refuse to check or acknowledge any possibility that the lenses were wrong, of course that never happened. I had to go to a REPUTABLE optician/optometrist to find out what was wrong with my glasses and that no amount of adjusting would ever fix the wrong PD AND that all the symptoms I had are the exact result of having a difference of 4mm in the PD. I will never return there. I would never recommend that anyone go there. I unfortunately only today looked online to find dozens of terrible reviews for sterling optical. This is clearly a company that does not belong in business.

I got my glasses from Sterling about 1 year ago and nothing BUT trouble with the glasses AND the manager there. I had to bring my glasses in 7different times to get them fixed and to this day, they STILL aren't fixed right! I got the lined bifocals, the lines aren't even and I can't even see correctly out of them. After 7 times of me going in to have them fixed, I told the manager that I wanted my money back and that I was going somewhere else to get glasses. She told me that it was against store policy and that they would fix them correctly (which they didn't do!). They didn't even give me ANY of my money back. I contacted their headquarters, but I never heard from them. I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy!!! They should be shut down!

Sterling Optical on Lexington and 78 St., NYC. Salesperson assured me the very expensive (progressive Varilux digital) lenses would be replaced if unsatisfactory, as per policy. After getting new glasses, I found that distance viewing with left lens was blurry. I went back to ophthalmologist for re-examination and the prescription was confirmed. The technician also verified prescription on lens is correct. I believe lens must be cut wrong. Depending on the tilt of my head, I can see clearly out of one lens at a time, but cannot see clearly out of both lenses at the same time except for reading distance.
I returned to S.O., but OWNER says lens was cut correctly. He wants me to see S.O.'s optician later in the week to verify prescription. I think he wants to charge me for optician's fee and I still may not get new lens. I'm cutting my losses and will not use them again. Friends and I have always lamented that once the salesperson sold you the eyeglass frames, they wouldn't give you the time of day afterwards. At this S.O. the salespeople were very nice, unfortunately, the owner and workmanship are not.

Brought our eyeglass prescriptions from our opthamolgist for my family to Sterling Optical in Bayshore Mall because they took our new insurance. He kindly said we can get free eye exam as our prescriptions were a few months old. After all said and done he changed all of our prescriptions. I asked if this guy was a real doctor? He assured me he was with 20 years experience.. I proceed to purchase them, $600.00 for all three pairs. A few days later we pick up our new glasses and not one of us could see out of them. I kindly said redo our glasses to my original eyeglass prescription that I brought in from my own eye doctor and they did.
A few more days go by, we get our new glasses. Now, the glasses have scratches on the lenses, some sort of defect. They have to redo them, again! A week later, we get our glasses. Now we take them and go home and try to get use to them for a couple of days. They were making us sick and dizzy, etc. I finally take the glasses to a reputable eye place to see if every prescription matches. They did, but all of the measurements were wrong. (Example one of the pairs should have been cut at 60, but they were cut at 70). "Now I bring the glasses back for the fourth time," to be redone, and I have to say, I was upset. ( I don't understand why they can't make these glasses right?)
I wanted my money back! He said store credit only. Ha! Are you kidding me? He shows me on my receipt, no refunds. That's ridiculous I say! (Is my $600.00 really worth it to him)? Store credit?!? Really? Now, It's been more than two weeks and I am still waiting for our new glasses. Shame on you, Sterling Optical! You will NOT have anyone in my family as new customers ever again as I am disgusted and I will let everyone know!

On 03 October 2013, I ordered a pair of glasses for my son. Payment cleared on 05 October. I had to make sure that I called them to clarify information because I had a clear impression that they were not focused on serving me as a customer. My first hint was the fact that I had to return to the store after walking out without a receipt.
Approximately a week after ordering, I called to check on the status and was told that they would call me when the glasses arrived from my insurance provider. I waited about three more days and called again. I was again told that they would contact me when the glasses arrived from the provider. Approximately 12 days after ordering, I called again and was told that they would contact me. I finally called my insurance provider 16 days after ordering and was informed that they did not place the order until the day of my third call to Sterling.
As a consumer I should have followed my initial instinct upon entering the facility and sought out a different provider. I would not suggest using this facility, as a matter of fact; I would strongly recommend avoiding this place at all costs. My recommendation to the owner/operator of this facility would be to consider monitoring and releasing the customer service representatives who are obviously bringing down the reputation of the facility.

The owner, Renada, told me that I would have to pay $50 to fix it and that she didn't break them so why should she pay? She said that everything breaks. Really? Well, $450 glasses shouldn't, Hun. She has always been rude talking on the phone and she's never someone I enjoy seeing when I walk in because of her rude manner. She's always on the phone ignoring customers. I understand when something breaks, we have to pay to fix it but she wasn't even accommodating. She just kept saying she didn't break them and everything breaks. No, everything does not break especially when you pay almost five hundred dollars for glasses! C'mon, I'm done with Sterling and the "owner" should actually learn how to run a business.

Last October, my son and I visited the mall. We both had an eye exam appointment with Sterling Optical. After the appointment, I was able to get contacts as part of my insurance package. I had wanted my son to get contacts too, but he explained that he was not yet ready. The Sterling Optical employee explained that he would be happy to offer my son a free trial pair of lenses, in an attempt to sell store product. I was all for it as my son is very cute and contacts would be wonderful. My son repeated that he was not yet ready for contacts and simply wanted to stay with his glasses. As a result, we simply replaced the lenses in his current frames and called it a day. I did not push the contact lens subject.
Recently (about a month ago), my son's eye glasses lost a small screw. I, unfortunately, could not remember the name of the store we had recently conducted optical business (which was Sterling Optical). I did, however, remember where the store was located. So, my son and I went into Sterling Optical and explained the problem with my son's glasses. The employee at the time said that she would not be able to provide any service if we were not currently a customer. She looked up my name, as well as my son's name in the computer, and explained that we were not listed as customers. I felt certain I had the right store, but the employee added doubt to my memory by explaining that, recently, Pearl Vision Center occupied a store only 2 suites down. She explained that they were only located on the second floor, while their original mall location was being renovated. So, my son and I walked the full length of a large mall to visit Pearl Vision Center. I explained the story to the Pearl Vision Center representative and without hesitation the employee fixed my son's glasses. Yippie.
Now, here is my most major complaint. Today, when my son got home from school, he asked if he could get contact lenses. I, of course, was THRILLED. I have wanted my son to get contact lenses for months. Finally, my kid decided to broach the possibility of contact lenses. So, we went to Pearl Vision Center and explained that we recently had our eye exams and that my son now wanted contacts. Pearl Vision was very helpful. They searched the computer records, and even went into the paper files and looked for our information back into 2009. They were unable to locate any current information. So, here we go again.
I then called Sterling Optical in the mall and explained the situation. The employee at Sterling Optical assured me that we were not listed as customers, and they had not provided either of us with an eye exam. Frustrated, I called Lens Crafters…I did not know what else to do...and was told the same information. Finally, I was getting really frustrated. I had tried to call my husband for insurance vision information, but he was unavailable. I knew that Sterling Optical was having an eye exam special so I dragged my child to the complete other side of the mall in hopes to suit my child up with contact lenses.
When we were in Sterling Optical, I explained my situation in person, that my son and I had a recent exam and were unable to locate which store in the mall provided that service. Dutifully, the Sterling Optical employee checked the computer again and assured me that we did not have the exam in their location. I then inquired about the cost of eye exams and the $9.99 special. I was then informed that the $9.99 special was only for glasses, and that the contact exam would cost $99.99. At that moment, I decided to try and reach my husband via phone again. Finally, success!!! My husband gave me the name of our insurance carrier for vision, along with policy number and phone number. I called our insurance company and explained my situation. The insurance company employee explained that we did have services provided at ...STERLING OPTICAL!!! The same company that refused to fix my son's glasses! The same store that assured me TWICE that we had never been provided services by their company.
When I told then what the insurance company had explained, they magically found our paper records. SERIOUSLY??? THEN, they said that he did not have a script for contact lenses and would need to have another exam. I was informed by the insurance company that because we were in a NEW YEAR, 2013 versus 2012, we were eligible for all yearly benefits again. I explained that my son did have the contact lens exam. How and why would the October 2012 store employee offer my son a free pair of trial contact lenses previously? That was my final straw. First, they said we were never customers. Then, when I was able to prove we had been customers, they say he did not have a contact lens prescription on file.
By this time, Sterling Optical had wasted 2 full hours of my time. If they had accurately checked their records during my first call, I would not have wasted time speaking with Pearl Vision Center, Lens Crafters, and Sterling Optical Center again. The staff at the Columbia Mall in Columbia, MD branch are horrible!!! If I owned that store, I would fire the entire lot. I would never allow such a pack of self-absorbed, lazy workers to represent my business. I would NEVER recommend them EVER. I would, however, recommend Pearl Vision Center. They were polite, helpful, and accommodating. The monkey brains at Sterling Optical could take a lesson or 2 from the employees at Pearl Vision Center. Pearl Vision ROCKS! Sterling Optical sucks!

In mid-March 2012, I purchased a pair of eyeglasses from your Annapolis mall location, which took two months to deliver. When I called to check the status of my order, I was told that the original associate who placed my order was no longer available; therefore, my order was lost. I was then told that my request had to be reordered, which will take another 5 to 7 days to deliver. A week later, I called to check the status of my order, and I was told by an Associate that my glasses were in and were ready for delivery. It was dark outside when the delivery was processed; therefore, I didn’t notice that my lenses were not transitioning with the sunlight until the next day. I took my glasses back to the store and was then told by a female associate that my lenses needed to be reordered to include the transitions, which will take an additional 5 to 7 days to deliver.
Two weeks later, I called to check the status of my order and I was told by a female associate that my glasses were in and ready for delivery. When I arrived the next day, I was told by the manager that the female associate, whom I spoke with on the phone the previous day, wasn’t available. On that sunny day as I was leaving the building and walking to my car, I noticed that my new glasses were not transitioning to the sunlight. I returned to the store and informed the manager that my glasses did not transition with the sunlight. The manager apologized and told me that the light that they use in the lab to validate transitional lenses was broken and needed a new bulb. The manager walked with me outside, and it was confirmed that my new glasses were not transitional. The manager apologized again and informed me that he needed to reorder my lenses to include transitional, which will take another 5 to 7 days to deliver.
Two weeks later, which is now the beginning of May 2012, I called to check the status of my order and I was told by the manager that my glasses were in and ready for delivery. When I arrived the next day, my glasses were indeed transitional. It’s now six months later, November 2012, and I’m noticing that I have light scratches on my lenses. I always keep my glasses in the case when I’m not wearing them; they were never dropped or mishandled. I always clean my lenses with the solution/cloth provided by sterling optical, yet I still have these light scratches? On November 9, 2012, I was in the Annapolis area, so I visited Sterling and asked the associate if there was anything that she could do to remove the light scratches from my lenses. The associate informed me that my lenses were plastic and can scratch very easily; therefore, I have to be very careful when cleaning them. The associate proceeded to tell me that because I didn’t have the protective coating, there was nothing she could do.
On November 20, 2012, I called Sterling again and I asked for a refund. I was told by a male manager that my order did not include a warranty; therefore, I didn’t qualify for a refund. What he did offer was to order new lenses at a discounted price. I told the manager no thanks, and now, I’m contacting the corporate office. Based on my experience, I see that Sterling cares more about making a sale over customer satisfaction. I was never offered scratch-resistant coating or a warranty; therefore, I asked the corporate office for a full refund and received no response.

I purchased a pair of glasses from Sterling Optical because they had a frame that I really liked. I went in 2 days after I got the glasses, because they gave me a headache and made me dizzy and I couldn't see to read out of them. Also, the frames were very uncomfortable and felt very heavy and left red marks on my nose. I had paid extra to have polished edges but the edges were not polished. I was told that the doctor and manager were on vacation and I should keep trying to wear them and come in the next week.
I returned the next week and was told the manager and doctor were still on vacation. I left the glasses there because I could not wear them anyway. They told me that the manager would call me the following Monday. The manager never called. I went back in on Friday. I was told that the bifocals were not positioned right and they would remake the lenses and they would be ready in a week. They told me to pick out another frame. There were no other frames I liked. They said I could not get my money back and said I could pick out frames from a catalog.
I told them I needed to see what I was buying. They said they would order a couple of frames for me and let me pick from those when they came in. I refused. They said I could find a pair of frames I liked at another store and get the model number and they would order those for me, but it would take 3 weeks for them to come in and another week for the lenses to be made. That would mean that it would be 7 1/2 weeks from the time I originally ordered the glasses until I get a usable pair of glasses. I could go to another store in the area and get glasses cheaper and have them in 3 days. Plus, the other store has Buy One Get One Free all the time. I am going back tomorrow to argue with them. I need a new pair of glasses now, not in 2 months!
Also, I found out that there is no customer service number you can call and no number for the company that I can find.

My wife's finally came in after 16 days and one of her 2 pairs was wrong, very high pressure to take them anyway. Finally, they took them back but would not reorder without a new prescription. So now it has been another week and still no glasses. My order has been in 3 weeks, no glasses yet. Each time we call and ask, we get the same story - the lab has them and they'll be shipped tomorrow. Four times it was the exact same story - it has been 2 weeks since the first time they told us "they'll be shipped tomorrow". I will never ever go back. And I would warn anyone dealing with them to be cautious - in addition to very high prices, they do not provide accurate information, and they are very slow.

Wrong prescription 2 times, & still no contact lens: My husband, granddaughter and I all had eye exam appointments. All 3 got glasses, along with granddaughter ordering contact lens too. All glasses were delayed in coming in or having the lens cut, etc. This was all more than a month ago. I had progressive lenses and was told to give them a week, as I didn't think they were right. I gave them two weeks, only to find out I had to continually take my glasses off to be able to see any distance. I especially need glasses at night to see when driving. My prescription is not strong for distance but does help. Upon taking them back, I found that part of my prescription was missing from the lenses. They ordered new lenses for me.
Now during the same time, we are still waiting for my granddaughter's contact lenses to come in; it has been at least a month now. We were told they were delivered to the front door but were not. They put in a trace on the shipment but haven't found them yet. So new contact lens were ordered and were to be shipped, which still did not happen within that week. So another call was placed. They were going to "overnight" the contact lens shipment to the store in Brookfield, WI. My new glasses finally came in two weeks later, at which point the contact lenses were to be at the store too. Well the glasses are in, no contacts are in and no one answers the phone in New York!
Guess what? I still can't see any distance with my new glasses. I have to take my glasses off to see any type of distance. Thank God I can see a slightly blurred distance better without these glasses than with. I will be going back to the Sterling Optical again. This will be my 5th trip into this store. At 50 miles roundtrip, I am not happy! I have been all too nice when I go in and speak with these ladies, as I'm not too sure whose fault this is! But now I am beyond mad. I am furious! The salespeople were very rude. I was told that the nose piece could not be fixed and my warranty had expired on the protecting coating. The only thing for me to do was to get another pair in which the cost was over $800.00 and my out of pocket cost after insurance was still $507.00. And they tell me there is nothing they can do except to sell me another pair.
This is unacceptable. I have purchased my glasses from Sterling for the past 12 years and any problem that I had with them they tried to help correct it. But this was another branch. Not with these people. After trying to get them to see I paid a lot of money for these glasses, the guy just walked away from the counter and the lady just got angry that is the only thing I can do. I went in to get loaners and was told by an employee the good news that "our district manager decided to let you pick a frame and we will let you keep them plus the ones you are supposed to get from Fidelis." Can say yes now I have a pair on from Fidelis. But the manager had the same cocky attitude as before, gave me glasses with bent arms over ears, and said, "Have a nice day." Oh, plus, I have my 10-cent case to put them in.
I left there, went to Wal-Mart, and had them look. They said, "Boy, they're crooked and twisted." 5 minutes later, they adjusted them free of charge; and they're fine. No thanks to Sterling. Davis Vision called to explain why all the problem since Sterling admitted no fault. They said that Sterling was correct in telling me they got a fax confirmation but from the wrong location and wrong fax, as anybody knows sending a fax to a working machine gives a confirmation. It's not rocket science. So for 3 months, I was without because they sent to the wrong number and never once bothered to call and verify my order was placed. They said they would send a redo to Fidelis because I wasn't happy, no kidding. That never happened, they keep telling me it's a fax problem. I even have a recorded message from a manager offering me a loner pair with the wrong prescription until it's worked out. What? Then wrong script? Very professional.
Now, it's almost July and still nothing. I call Davis Vision and Fidelis, they said Sterling has been holding the old pair so they can't do a fix. I filed a complaint with Fidelis against Sterling. Exactly 5 minutes later, a male manager from Chautauqua mall store called. "Let's get this straight, you have no reason to be upset. Do you realize how little we get paid for Fidelis glasses? I wasted one hour of my time on this and you should be lucky my other manager offered to give you a set of the wrong script as a loner." He just kept going on so I hung up. I'm sure if I had recorded it, I could have pressed harassment charges. I even received a survey on "How was our service?" and "How do you like your glasses?" about 2 weeks ago. You can guess the answer. These guys are worthless and I have many other names that I can't say here for their business. First time ever there. What a joke. I have been wearing glasses for 43 years, and I have never had such unacceptable service. Sterling Optical on Niagara Falls Boulevard across from the Boulevard Mall is turning into a nightmare. I had my eyes examined in May. Joanne quickly picked out a pair of frames for me and measured my eyes for fit. I returned in October to pay 50% of my portion to Constantine. (I finally had the money.)
I returned again in early November 2011, but my glasses were not ready as promised. (Jill helped me) I returned in early December, and I paid the second half of my portion and picked up a pair of glasses quickly. Jill helped me. I got home and realized my frame was too small for my face, the lenses were not thin, and the two metal/rubber parts that snug your nose were all bent. (I paid for progressive, transition, and thin lenses.)
I returned my first pair of glasses in December. This time Kate helped me, and we spoke several times on the phone after that. In November and December, I was going to the store by taking 2 buses. My second pair of glasses were finally ready in January. I am still taking 2 buses to get to the store. (I am also 57 years old with multiple health issues, but I still want my glasses to be attractive, modern, and complimentary to my face.)
My second pair of glasses was supposed to be exactly like my old frames. (I compromised with my old frames, because the staff was rude and not offering help to help me pick out a new frame.) I informed Kate that if the manufacturing company she was making contact with did not have my old glasses, I wanted to return to the store and have her help me pick out a new frame.
I returned to Sterling to pick up my glasses on January 24, 2012. All the workers were hiding in a back room. Joanne came and gave me my glasses. To my disgust, they were not my old frame, but a different, ugly frame--Via Roma 510 which is a frame for a man. I am a woman. I asked Joanne for the name of the person who is over everyone in that store. She said his name was Dennis. I asked her if he had a last name, and she said she couldn't give it out.
I'm calling him today. Sterling has 3 options. Give me my money back, pick out an appropriate frame and do it right the third time, or I will take them to small claims court. This store should be closed.

You asked me to rate them--I really wish I could. Now, they are trained sales people so they are taught to lie out of their teeth. They try to make you believe that it is not their fault. Maybe it isn't. I have been waiting for five months to get my glasses. I had to return a pair of glasses because the first ones broke. The lens and frames were very expensive. I bought three pair of designer's frames that first day totaling more than $900.00. We paid with our credit card, not to mention the insurance.
I raised so much hell so they gave me a pair of loaner glasses after four months--something that they wanted me to have. I hate these glasses. I was told that the glasses were coming from Italy. Yeah, right. I say, give me my ** money back. For four months, I was wearing CVS reading glasses--I have cataracts and this is definitely a no no.
Sterling Optical is going to be the cause of me not having corrected vision because I don't have money to keep having eye exams, nor do they care if I read out of a coco-cola bottle. I am getting ready to press charges on the service center in Iverson Mall. The staff is very polite but the service is not acceptable. Be advised that my complaint is in and the process already begins. I have done my part and your time is up.

I have been a customer of Sterling Optical at Brookfield Square for over 30 years. Recently I had a contact lens exam at which time the doctor wanted me to try out some different lenses due to some changes with my eyes. I was told it would take about 5 business days. After a couple of weeks since no one called me, I called and was told they had not come in. Corporate had sent the wrong ones. I waited another 10 days and still no call, so I called again. The correct lenses were still not there.
Someone would put a tracer on them. I called a week later and was told 2 of the trial lenses were in but I needed to wait for the rest of them. 5 days later, I was told the other ones would be in next week and I made an appointment for my fitting. I went in today and 2 left eye lenses were in and the rest were still not there. Everyone was very apologetic and completely in the dark as to how this could be happening. Well that makes 2 of us. If they can't fix it what am I supposed to do?
I am so frustrated with this terrible service. I can't believe that no one can fix this problem. Even though I am $70 in the hole for the exam, I just feel like cutting my losses and walking away and starting over with someone else. I don't know if it's this store or corporate but if the rest of their customers get treated like this it's a wonder Sterling Optical is still in business.

I went to Sterling Optical in Ithaca, NY on November 3 at opening time 10:00 am. Had eyes examined by their available optometrist paid him $50.00. Then, picked out frames and lenses. Paid in full then. I was told that my glasses would be be done in less than a week. So, on Monday, November 8th, I called. I was shortly told, "We will call you when they are ready." So, I called again on Wednesday November 10, I as told they would be done other next day (even thought it was a federal holiday). So, I drive out of my way to go to the mall, to get there and told " yes they are here, but they won't be ready for another hour."
So, I go home. Take the next day off from work to get my glasses. I am there at 10:00 opening time, served by a woman (who would benefit from Customer Service Training) I was told they aren't quite done yet will be about an hour, the only person we have here today is busy with a customer and can't cut your lenses until she has time. Fine, I will go get some grocery shopping done. I returned at 11;25 to be told, "She is just finishing up." I was there until 12:40 before I was presented with these glasses. I had to take them off before I could get all the way home. I cannot see with them at home, at work or even driving a car.
What ** me off the most, I take yet another day off from work to return them on Monday, Nov 15 to find Sterling ID closed for renovations, will be open Thursday (today for business) I get there tonight, (after driving out of my way again) to find they are a little behind) and should be open late tomorrow afternoon. I have tried to call other Sterling optical to get a complaint # to call and it is all a dead end. And the worst is no cash refund, store credit only. I can't wait until I can go hang out at the mall warning people of the service..

I purchased my glasses in December but picked them up in July. Three and a half months later, there was this plastic on it that was peeling of the lens. I brought it back to the place and the sales person there said that the manager will contact me the next day.
They did not contact me. I contacted them the following week. The manager said that my insurance doesn't cover it so I have to pay $149 for the lens and transition because I had no warranty. I was in disbelief as I only had the glasses for 3 and a half months. I told him I couldn't afford that and the manager said that the best he can do is require I pay him $89 instead or do without the glasses. I asked him why my glasses was like this, he could not tell me why. He said it could be many reasons such as sweating, the type of lotion I use (can you believe this?), or if I cleaned it with some kind of lens cleaner.

A sales lady showed me eyeglass frames after ignoring me for two minutes. After I chose a frame, she told me to move away from the counter and allow the man who was standing in line after me to move up to where I had been standing. The sales lady said, "She'll write you up," referring to the one other sales lady in the store. But the other sales lady was completely tied up and busy with a family. So, I was forced to stand alone in the store and wait 25 minutes just to pay and get my receipt. The original sales lady did fill out my receipt, but only after waiting on the other customer. No apology and very rude.

Using my union insurance, I got a pair of glasses with bells and whistles for which I paid nearly five hundred dollars over and above the coverage, believing I'd have them for a few years. Immediately, the glasses cracked. The store replaced the lenses but the glasses cracked again soon after they were replaced and it was either pay hundreds to get new ones or do without. I'm wearing an old pair until I can find a decent optician with a real warranty who will stand behind and take care of what they sell me. No wonder Sterling Optical has Mr. Magoo as its logo. They'll leave you blind and all they said was "sorry you're disappointed". I had to go to a new optician and pay another $600+ for new glasses without any insurance coverage, which only offers coverage every two years.

This patient was taken care of properly. The staff went so far as to order a pair of trial lenses to have on hand in case we did not have a pair that fit properly. The doctor in this case examined the patient and found she needed a different brand and power. The pair ordered by the employee could not be dispensed, because they were not what the doctor ordered. The doctor explained this but she was still not satisfied. She left the store with a trial pair of another brand and power.
The law states you can only dispense a product with the doctor’s permission. Our marching orders are set in stone. They are a third class medical device. Had she come in the night before, she could not have picked up the lenses put aside by the employee as her Rx had expired. She would have had to wait for the next day to pick them up. It seems you can never do right by a person who has their mind made up differently. They need to understand liability laws.

Well, I wish I could get the contact info from the person who complained about John on March 9 on this site -- we would have a lot to talk about. I went to Sterling Optical on April 24, 2010, for my usual yearly eye exam. Prior to going in, I was told that I had expired but the clerk on the phone said I could have a trial pair of contacts to hold me over. I was called on Friday, the 23rd to come and pick them up. I said, well, I have an appointment tomorrow, I will get them then. I went in and was examined and left with a new trial pair. I asked for the ones from the Friday call to have a spare in case of a loss or tear or they were bothersome. This is what started the problem. I was told I couldn't have them by the store clerks. They made me wait while they went to get the doctor to ask her if she had them.
After a short discussion on why I could not have the other pair of trials and I would have had them, had I stopped in on Friday the owner came out, John. He said, he cannot have two trial pairs of glasses out there at the same time. I said if I had picked them up on Friday, they would be in my purse now. The discussion continued and the clerks were trying to explain to me the situation. I was very disgusted at how the "owner" John was talking to me, very rude and condescending throughout. I said do not talk to me like a child or a student. When I asked for his name, he said it was John. I said who do I contact that is above you. He said he's the owner. I said what's your last name and he said, and get this to the March 9 complainer, I don't have a last name, have fun with that... OMG. I said you're telling me you are the owner of this company and admitting to that and then talking like that. I was appalled! The doctor, then again tried to explain to me the situation. She had explained it all to me and I was ready to walk out of the store when John (no last name) spouted his mouth off again.
I said, well you just made a mistake John, I was ready to leave here and you had to speak again like you did. I asked for my records because I said I would never come to his business again and he would not give them to me. He said I needed a release to which I said, then give me one to sign. These are my records and I have the right to them. He took them and said not without a doctor's name and a release from a new doctor. I have now contacted corporate and yes, John, they're not that hard to get a hold of. I have contacted this website, and the better business bureau. I paid for my eye exam on Saturday, the 24th and thankfully nothing else. I was also a little suspicious of business practice there, when I have been wearing a toric lens for years and when they didn't have one in stock the doctor said, well you can try this one, you're right on the bubble. Basically, seemed to me like she was just getting me something they had and not actually the correct lens.
I have contacted another vision store in my area, who is dealing with trying to get my records now so I can get in there and get another exam and my contacts. By the way, corporate did indicate to me that they had already a lot of complaints on file from Mr. John no last name. As the last complaint had indicated, I too am in the legal field and have many contacts and like he said, you are gonna have fun with that Mr. John. Thanks for the space - I am now on my way the Better Business Bureau website.
As of now, I am out $100 for my exam on Saturday the 24th. I am being charged again for a new exam at the new location, however, I am willing to pay for that when I go. I am asking the BBB as well to get a refund from the company because there is no way I would feel comfortable going back in there for a contact lens follow up to complete this transaction.

Sterling Optical Brookfield ripped us off! My wife and I want to Sterling Optical Brookfield Square and had the worst experience of our life. I had an eye exam and had bifocals made for my Dolce&Gabana ($1,000) frames. They charged me $258 and the lenses were cut crooked and from the stress they cracked. I took them back right away and they replaced one lens. The same thing happened again, this time out of the 30 days.
John who said he was the owner treated my wife badly and said that he doesn't have all day to be sitting around to talk with her. He said he is a businessman and if she was a businessman, she would know something about business. He said he had a store in Madison and one in Beaver Dam and if she wanted to come to the Beaver Dam store to meet him, she could do that. Even though we live in Brookfield and as she was talking to him, he was at the Brookfield Square store. He was mean and rude and didn't even care. She sent a text to the number that he called from (his cell phone) and he told her to never text him again and that this phone was off limits.
My wife said that she was calling Sterling Corporate and he said "have fun with that." Totally unreal. It's not even about the money, it's being treated badly. They can take your money and they are selling a brand "Sterling" and yet, nobody will back up their service/product. And "John" who says he is the owner, is a real piece of work. Well, now John boy, you messed with the wrong people because my business is public relations and I am a businessman with the right connections with many media resources and not only getting the word out, I'm going to sue you. So John "good luck with that." See you in court. I'm in your life now, John and just to think this all stemmed from you being a bad "businessman." Bye for now, "John" or should I say conman John.

The sales rep gave me a bogus sales slip, never gave me the contacts that I paid almost $200 for, and then tried to make a scene with me, when I came to get a refund. You know that times have really hit rock bottom, when people actually swindle your money from you, behind the guise of being a business. The awful truth of it all is that, after a month, the sales representative still does not return my calls, and has not made any independent calls of his own, to update me on the delivery of the contacts that I purchased on December 7, 2009. Making a last attempt to get my merchandise, I went into the store. He gave me another story about how he would have to call the distributor.
When I asked for a refund, he said that was not possible. I plainly stated that the store should be able to give refunds, when it cannot provide the customer with what he/she has purchased, particularly after a month's time. Not only was he not communicative, not friendly, and entirely unprofessional, he proceeded to tell me how I only purchased half of what I did. So, Sterling Optical holds you for ransom by charging you, not giving you any product, and then tells you that even if you were to wait for an unstated period of time, that you will only receive half of what you actually thought you would be getting, when the store charged you. It is extremely bad business for the vendor to not deliver paid for merchandise, and to be completely uncommunicative during the process. It is even worse to cheat the customer for what was stated to be paid for, and it is inexcusable to altogether accuse that the customer is being subversive in her/his claims.
After a month, I have not received the contact lens I purchased, nor can get a refund for the $180 that I spent on them. Additionally, the sales representative will cheat me either of the dispute on the charge with my credit card company, the fact that he is now saying that I only purchased half the amount of merchandise that I paid for, or both (which is most likely).

I went into the store on 4/3/09 at 12 noon on a Friday to ask if they could fix my broken glasses. I basically wanted to know if they carried the same frames I had because I wanted to order the same frames. They said they carried the frames but didn't have them in stock so they would order them for me. This seemed fine. But as I was talking with one of the salesladies, she asked if I just wanted to buy a whole new pair of glasses (the same frames and all). At the time, it sounded like a good idea. So I paid $543.95 for custom lenses and frames. Now here's the kicker. The frames are on back order and I was told they would not be available until May. I said that this was okay, I could survive.
The lenses, I was told, would probably be available in 2-3 weeks and that I would get a call when my glasses were ready. I agreed, paid, thanked them, and then left. That night, I thought it over and decided that I didn't need the new glasses after all. So the next morning, 4/4/09, I called the store at 10 am (opening time) and asked to cancel the order. The lady on the phone asked me to hold and then another lady came on who said she was the store manager. She told me that the order had already been processed to their manufacturer and that they could not cancel because it was a custom order. Bear in mind, it is a weekend, the frames are not available, and the lenses (is the manufacturer really open on a Saturday and making my frames which won't be ready for at least a week anyway?) have not been made. She said that since my receipt said, "No refund," I could only have store credit.
She said the store had the frames I wanted (in a different color and larger size), and that they would be happy to provide me with them while I waited. But I decided I neither desired the custom frames nor any other product they offered. I decided I did not want glasses, period. Thinking I was being a responsible consumer by asking to cancel a hefty (for me since I'm a student) order within 24 hours of the original purchase, I asked for a refund and reminded them that I had paid for a product I would not receive for at least a week anyway. Again, I was told they could not give refunds, and even worse, could not possibly call up the manufacturers to tell them to cancel the order.
How is it, I wonder, that a store can claim to have no control over their computerized ordering process with their manufacturer, but then will turn around and say I can get store credit - meaning wouldn't they have to cancel the original order in order to be able to fulfill a new one using my money which they will not refund me? I emailed the corporate office Saturday and am waiting to see if I hear from them this Monday. I think it is a travesty that my money is held hostage, that I am being forced to be a customer when I do not want their product - it's criminal.

I explained I lived 60 miles away and would appreciate the glasses being obtained as soon as possible I went back the next week (2nd trip - 120 miles), picked out the frames and paid on my credit card. When I went back to pick them up (3rd trip - 120 miles) they had someone else's prescription in them. I reminded them I lived 60 miles away. 2 weeks later they called saying the frames were in so I drove to Ontario (4th trip - 120 mi) only to find they had been tinted wrong and I couldn't even see out of them.
This could have been fixed but the tech wasn't in. I waited another week and half and they called me to say the frames were in. When I got to the store (5th trip - 120 miles), I discovered that the bifocal was in the wrong placement. I then waited another week and a half, drove out to pick up the glasses (6th trip - 120 miles) and the prescription in the new lens was incorrect. The staff was wonderful when I first went in to purchase the glasses, but each time I went back they were ruder and ruder. The clerk went somewhere and 20 minutes later she had still not come back to advise me of any problem or even to acknowledge that I was still there waiting. I hear another clerk saying that they could not find someone's records, I assume they were mine. She had had the records in her possesion 2 days prior to this so that I could order the glasses. If she had just returned to advise me that there was some problem I would have not had a complaint but she ignored me for at least 20 minutes at which time another clerk asks if he can help,he said I thought you were all taken care of I said so did I but my clerk disappeared and never returned. I had to explain the whole thing once again to him, he did come back and say she couldn't find my file. Tonight, after several visit to the store (at Potomac Mills Mall) to pick up a pair of glasses that needed to be replaced because of poor workmanship, I was again told that they were not ready. Story one, they are in the mail, story two they have been sent by the wrong mail carrier, story three come and get them, oh sorry they are not ready, story four, they are back ordered.
Meanwhile, I asked for the fourth time to have the second of the three pairs of glasses we purchased for my wife, son and myself as well as contact lens, adjusted. A female sales clerk had suggested earlier in the week that the manager make another pair and compensate my son for the three+ weeks of waiting for his glasses by providing him with a free back up pair. She suggested that we pick out a few frames to save time for when we came back yet another day to pick up the replacement glasses. Needless to say, when I arrrived tonight to pick them up after another week of waiting and discovered that they were still not ready, and that he was unwilling to honor the promise made by his staff to replaced my glasses as well, I was "disapointed" and expressed my disatisfaction with the service.
I requested a refund and was inforemd that "that's not happening." Although three witnesses were present the manager, the sole person in the store besides the customers at the time, told us to get out of his store. I did not comply and he called the mall security. Witnesses told the security and later the police that the manger was rude and that we were not. In fact, the manager threated the mall security officers with the loss of their jobs because they would not escort us out of the store.
The manager called the police, who contacted the mall security, and spoke with my wife over the phone while she was still in the store. The police came and negotiated a reciept for the merchandise and the return of our broken property and reccommended that we contact the better business bureau and file a civil suit.
We left as peacefully as we had entereed with the broken glasses and receipt and plan to file a civil suit for the refund of our money which was over $1000. plus the cost of the eye examination which resulted in contacts that still do not provide my son with clear vision. We have been doing busines with Sterling Optical for years at the location in the Fair Oaks Mall with nothng but good results. This location seems to be problematic.
I am a peaceful man with years of conflict resolution training, which I had to make good use of during each visit to ths Sterling Optical store in Potomic Mills Mall. Any advice?
We agree with the police officers. Mark should sue the store in Small Claims Court for the return of his money.

8/18/03: I visited Sterling Optical (Store #302, Boulevard Mall, Buffalo, NY), picked out the desired frames and lenses, and paid for the order in full, as is store policy. I was told they would contact me when the glasses came in.
8/21/03: Sterling called: my glasses were ready. I stopped by after work and they presented the glasses. I took interest in the right lens as there appeared to be what I thought was some foreign object on the upper rim of the lens (these are rimless glasses and therefore polycarbonate lenses). The clerk commented that she would look at the lens. After taking the glasses into the back room and having someone inspect them, she reappeared with the glasses saying there is a chip in the lens. The other salesperson said that they would have another pair of glasses made up, and that I could take the chipped glasses with me since it would take several days. I left the store wondering if I had not noticed the chip IN the store, I would have been out of luck!
8/28/03: I was notified that the replacement glasses were in.
9/1/03 (Labor Day): I stopped by the store to pick up my glasses, only to find the store closed. (No sign saying they would be closed that day, or even a phone message stating such).
9/2/03: Picked up replacement glasses. Everything seemed OK.
9/3/03: I clean my glasses every morning, using approved methods for coated lenses (I have had coated lenses for years and know how to take care of them properly)...I could CLEAN these lenses properly, but could not eliminate the blue haze from a portion of the left lens. After several days of cleaning I realized the problem was not going to go away. Also, as the haze is disturbing as it negatively affects the vision in my left eye.
9/8/03: I call Sterling Optical, reported the problem and asked if perhaps they still had the left lens from the initial pair to replace the defective lens. The young lady I spoke with said no, that they were probably returned, and there would be no problem as coated lens blanks were in stock, and they could take care of me that afternoon. I replied that these were polycarbonate lenses...she indicated there was no problem and that they were in stock as well. I visited Sterling after work that day and spoke with a gentleman...I presented the situation to him and handed him the glasses...he held them up to the light, looked at the left lens and acknowledged that there was indeed a problem with the coating. He also stated that the lens was NOT in stock - that it would take several days to get one in, and that once in I would have to surrender my glasses for two WEEKS for them to grind the lens and drill the appropriate holes!
9/25/03: Sterling optical called the glasses were in. I picked them up after work and inspected them carefully while I was still in the store. The left lens was perfect, but there were either scratches or interior imperfections in the right lens. I tried cleaning the lens, thinking that it may be a piece of dust or something. I showed the clerk the problem, stating I cant remove this, can you? She commented that they were either scratches or imperfections, and they agreed to order another right lens.
10/6/03: Sterling called the lens had arrived.
10/8/03: I went to Sterling Optical and waited for them to replace the right lens. I cleaned and inspected the lenses. All looked OK. I asked that if I found a problem with the glasses within a few days could call them. They said yes, and I also told them I would let them know if I was satisfied.
10/9/03: Glasses cleaned OK, therefore no ocular problem with the lenses. I tried to put the inherent sunglass attachment on (these are Easy Clip frames, with sunglasses that attach with magnets) and found that the right lens holes were not lined up properly, and in fact the nose bridge was crooked! They were absolutely unwearable as sunglasses they looked like something out of Pee Wees Playhouse! I called Sterling Optical and described the problem to the gentleman who answered the phone. I asked them to order another lens and asked also that they call me when it arrived, that I would bring the frames and the sunglass attachment to them so they could properly align everything. The gentleman agreed and we closed the conversation.
10/10/03: Around 2 pm I received a call from Patty at Sterling Optical. She stated that they were not going to do anything more for me; that it was obvious they could not satisfy me and asked as to when I could drop the glasses and accessories (case, sunglass attachment) off so they could credit my charge card...she stated that she knew I put a dispute on the charge and clearly stated that she wanted me to return the property that day. I told her I could not return the glasses that day as I did not have my backup glasses with me. She pressed me for a date that I would be returning the property. I told her I would not be in the area over the weekend and that Monday or Tuesday would be the earliest I could drop anything off. She made a point of saying she would be there Saturday, Sunday AND Monday. We said our goodbyes and ended the conversation.
In closing, let me present my argument: I paid Sterling Optical in full up-front, as per your policy and in good faith. I have returned to the store 5 times, have had 3 pair of glasses, 3 left lenses and 4 right lenses and STILL have not received satisfactory product. I see NO quality control, or even concern for a job well done! AND, to top it off I get a phone call from the store insulting me! Imagine that...they insult ME because THEY cannot provide a pair of glasses that are wearable!
Damage Resulting: I have to contact my insurance company, find another optician and wait ANOTHER 2 weeks for my glasses!

I was tested at Sterling Optical in Hagerstown, MD for new lenses (the frames -- expensive ones -- had been purchased from Sterling Optical two years earlier). I again ordered progressive bifocals with "Panamic" which enables me to use a little of my peripheral vision.
When I picked up the new lenses, I told the clerk that when I looked even slightly to the side, everything went out of focus. The clerk said I should allow some time to get used to the new lenses. Over the next few days I noticed that the vision in the right eye was not as sharp as he vision in the left, and if I looked even slightly to the side when driving or walking through a store, I had to tilt my head down because the image became blurred.
I already had an appointment with an ophthalmologist for a glaucoma and range of vision test so I decided to wait till after that exam. The ophthalmologist confirmed that the right lense wasn't as good as the left.
I returned to Sterling Optical and told him the problems I was having. I was retested and the clerk told me the Panamic was placed too high and I would get new lenses with the Panamic feature lowered and a different prescription for the right lense. When the lenses came in, I returned to Sterling Optical, dropped off my glasses to have the new lenses put in, and returned a few hours later.
Now my frames were broken along the bottom rim. When I asked what caused the frame to crack, the clerk said that plastic dries out. His glue job would last maybe a month, maybe a year, he said. Those frames weren't broken when I dropped off my glasses. I will never use Sterling Optical again.

The first words when I walked into the store were, "Do you accept (VSP) Vision Service Plan insurance", they answered "Yes" with no brief explaination that they were an out-of-network service provider. I had been to two prior establishments and they clearly stated, within the first 2 minutes of conversation, they were not part of the VSP network. This is a clear case of misrepresentation.
When I called the owner to correct the problem he refused to talk to me and instead advised me to talk to the salesperson when this was obviously not a salesperson situation. He offered to give me a $15 discount on my frames when I had already been overcharged at least $300. I called first thing the next morning to advise Sterling Optical to submit a "stop order" on the glasses and the owner refused. I was advised that there was a sign on the sales floor that read "No Refunds", but yet I also noticed that there was no sign that stated "Out Of Network Vision Care".
I have already contacted my credit card company to register a dispute over payment to Sterling Optical and was informed by the Visa representative that disputes with "Out of Network" vision companies are not uncommon and that she had already handled 3 other complaints that day. I am amazed this problem has not been addressed before.

7/4/03 asked how much swim goggles would be. I was quoted $159.99. "My daughter has a very strong RX, how much would that be?" " Nothing at all," I was practically cut off in mid sentence. I was told to come in and they could be ordered.
7/7/03 I came in to order the goggles. they can't find the book. So now I have to wait 3-4 days so they can order two and I could pick one. I kept asking how long everything would take because my daughter is on a swim team and I was concerned about a time frame. It shouldn't take longer then a week, they said.
7/11/03 The goggles finally came in and I went in the next afternoon after a swim meet. I gave the Dr.'s card and they read the RX off my daughter's glasses. I was told it was a very high RX but since the girl was there and heard what the other woman said they would honor it. I was supposed to be getting the glasses by that wed. the latest.
7/14/03 I get a call stating I have to pay $50 more because of the strong Rx, I asked to speak with a manager and after telling the entire story she said I would have to pay $20 more. When will they be done I kept asking. "I can't get them for Wed. or Thurs. as promised probably Fri. I'll put a rush on them."
7/18/03 I call no goggles. 7/19/03 I call, no goggles. 7/20/03 I call, no goggles. 7/21/03I call, yes the goggles are in but the tech. is not. When will they be ready I ask? Tomorrow late afternoon, I'm told and once again I hang up with an upset 7-yr-old by my side and more angry then ever.
7/22/03 I send my husband to pick up the goggles because I don't want to go in the store and get angry at all of the incompetent people. He is told the lenses did not come in yet. He says cancel the order, they say he can't. we are told they will be in 7/25/03 possibly. My daughter has been wearing glasses for over 5 years and I have never been treated so horribly, never been misleaded like this. If I do ever get the goggles I nor anyone I know will ever be shopping in this store again.

my daughter had an eye appointment on July 21st. We arrived a few minutes before her appointment to fill out any paperwork. She was handed the clip board and told to bring it back to the desk when she was done. She went back to the desk where she was completely ignored by 3 employees, all sitting there. They were too busy discussing what kind of doughnuts they liked. We were finally acknowledged 10 minutes later. Her appointment was at 2:00 and the doctor showed up at 2:15 when he went into the office and started talking on the cell phone.
As we waited the conversations of the employees were very unappropriate, everything from doughnuts to movies to pornography. We could hear everything they were saying. After her exam she was fitted for contacts and we were told to go to the counter and finish the paperwork. We stood there for 10 minutes while one employee talked on the phone, another employee was on the phone and then waited on another customer who had come in after us. Two of the other employees were walking in and out of the store, going into the mall. One employee walked by us twice, she was too busy going to buy a soda to wait on us.
I finally asked the gentleman who was sitting at the desk, on the phone, if there was someone to help us and he responded, "Hopefully in a few minutes." There were 5 employees working at the time - 1 on the phone, 2 wandering the mall, another one on the phone and don't know what the 5th one was doing but when I started to complain she showed up out of nowwhere. She was very rude to us also.
They are mailing the contacts to us because I will not go back into the store again, which is to bad because I have purchased quite a few pairs of glasses and contacts over the years. I have been in retail for many years and have never seen such unprofessional behavior.

Had several eye exams -- 4 to be exact -- and still have not had good vision with both eyeglasses and contacts. I have been a Sterling Optical client for over 10 years and have never in the past had a problem getting the correct eye exam. This is a little ridiculous.
I have had a hard time understanding how the company can hire incompetent optometrists to serve the community. This is a HUGE risk to let someone mess with a vital part of your life and not to be accurate with there assessment. What do you do? How do I as a customer feel confident that someone knows what they are doing. I have had trouble reading, driving night and daytime. This has affected my work.
The problem may not be Denise's prescription. She could have a medical condition that is causing the visual symptoms. Though optometrists scream bloody murder whenever we say it, she should see an ophthalmologist, an M.D. who can perform additional tests to be srue there's nothing serious going on.

I purchased a pair of eyeglasses from Sterling Optical and have been unhappy with my vision ever since. They were bought with my Citibank Platinum Select card on March 2, 2000 for $423.86. In addition, I paid $49 for an eye examination and prescription on March 1, 2000 that did not correct my vision.
I have made many unsuccessful attempts to get good vision with these eyeglasses by having my eyes re-examined and having the lenses re-made on three different occasions.
1 Mar 00 Eyes examined by an Optometrist at Dr. R.K. Rice and Associates, located inside Lenscrafters, Landover Mall, 2411 Brightseat Road, Landover, MD 20785. Since Lenscrafters does not use Varilux lenses, I took the prescription to Sterling Optical. There I was charged $268.96 for Varilux Progressive CR 39 lenses; $24.95 for Tint; and $129.95 for Hi Index Multifocal Upgrade; for a total of $423.86. I paid with my Citibank Platinum Select credit card.
12 April 00 Picked-up eyeglasses. Reading vision was impaired. I wore the eyeglasses for a week. Constantly I had to remove the eyeglasses when trying to read because my vision was blurred. I couldn't see good enough to write checks or read a computer screen.
17 April 00 Eyes examined a second time; this time by the owner, Dr. Rice, at Dr. R.K. Rice and Associates, whereupon she changed the prescription and recommended a "re-measure segment height & D.D./Varilux." I took the new prescription back to Sterling Optical and they sent the lenses back for a free re-make. I picked up the new eyeglasses about a week later and found only a slight vision improvement.
28 April 00 Returned "re-make" eyeglasses to Sterling Optical because reading vision was still poor. Sterling had its own optometrist examine my eyes. And again, the prescription was changed slightly for the left lens. So, for a third time, Sterling sent the lenses back for a "re-make" of the left lens.
5 May 00 Picked-up eyeglasses. Reading vision was still impaired. I wore the eyeglasses for three weeks and still did not have good vision. It was difficult to read papers, books, or mail. This is very important because I work in a Federal government library.
25 May 00 Called Sterling Optical, identified myself, and asked to speak to Rochelle, the store manager. I intended to ask her what else I could do to get eyeglasses I could use. When she failed to answer the telephone after five minutes I hung up the telephone. She did not return my call.
30 May 00 I sent an email to Varilux at TechnicalQuestions@EssilorUSA.com and asked for their help or recommendation on how I could get new lenses for my eyeglasses.
1 June 00 Varilux wrote to me saying they contacted Sterling Optical and spoke with Rochelle, the store manager. Varilux asked me to contact Rochelle. They said they were available to assist Rochelle at her request. I called Sterling that same day but was unable to reach Rochelle.
2 June 00 I called Sterling to speak with Rochelle. After waiting for 10 minutes I hung up the telephone and called back. This time I was told Rochelle was too busy to come to the telephone. I left my name and telephone number and asked her to return my call. Rochelle did not call me back.
4 June 00 I wrote to Citibank Platinum Select to see if they could assist me in obtaining a refund from Sterling. I provided details of all my transactions with Sterling and asked that they credit my account.
19 June 00 I called Citibank because I had not received a response to my letter. I asked them to send me the appropriate forms to fill out to get a refund on eyeglasses that I could not use.
27 June 00 I sent forms back to Citibank. Later, Citibank wrote back that it was a valid charge because I had paid the entire balance of my bill. Had I not paid the entire bill then I could withhold payment until I was satisfied with the product.
27 June 00 Sterling manager Rochelle finally called me and said she suspected that a wrong lens had been put into my frames. She asked that I return the glasses. (This was the same day I returned refund forms to Citibank).
28 June 00 I returned my eyeglasses to Sterling. (The newest lenses had been set in my own previously purchased frames.)
5 July 00 I called Sterling to see if my glasses were ready; I was told they were not.
7 July 00 I called Sterling to see if my glasses were ready to be picked up but Rochelle was not there so I could not get any info on my glasses.
8 July 00 I called Sterling again at 2:30 pm but Rochelle had not arrived yet.
9 July 00Found the Sterling Customer Service email address and sent in a complaint. I never received an acknowledgement or a response.
16 July 00 Sent a second email to the Sterling Customer Service email address and again did not receive an acknowledgement or a reply.
19 Jul 00 I called the store to ask about the status of my glasses; Rochelle was not in. I asked if my glasses were ready for pick-up and was told "No" -- without even a pause. I asked the person if they could check to see if my glasses were ready. I waited on hold for over 5 mins before I hung up.
26 Jul 00 I sent a certified letter to Rochelle and to Citibank, Customer Service. The letter asked for the return of my frames and for Rochelle to contact me by 9 August. I asked for a full refund of $423.86 in resolution to this problem.
2 August 00 I received a message on my home answering machine from Sterling that my glasses were ready. The message was left at 10:09 am. I picked up my frames/glasses about 5 pm. Rochelle was not at the store and had left no message for me about the lens she said she was going to install. Upon closer inspection at home, I discovered that my glasses had one brown tinted lens (left) and one rose-colored lens (right). In addition, I still do not have good vision with these lenses.
2 August 00 Received certified ltr receipt back from Citibank in South Dakota but not from Sterling in Maryland.
3 August 00 I called the Sterling Customer Service office 1-800-332-6302 to speak to a service rep. I was told the Manager, Susan, would contact me at work on 4 August.
4 August 00 I called Sterling to speak to Customer Service Manager, Susan. I explained the problem and she said she would call the store and speak to Rochelle and ask her to contact me. I told Susan I was not hopeful that Rochelle would call because of her past uncooperative position. Rochelle did not call me. I would like a full refund on the eyeglasses.
Since 1 March 00 I have been trying to obtain a pair of eyeglasses that would provide good vision. I charged the eyeglasses on my credit card and promptly paid the bill because I believed that Sterling was a reputable business and would responsibly provide good service. I have purchased many pairs of eyeglasses from Sterling since the 1960's and never was treated so badly. Over the past five months, I have made nearly ten visits to the store for pick-up, eye exam, and delivery of my glasses. I have been so frustrated that my hypertension worsened and I was prescribed an additional medication in May 00. I paid my credit card bill on 1 April and have not had good vision one day since I first obtained my glasses on 12 April.
