They returned my call quickly. They're also very close to my house and had good schedules that worked with my kids not having to miss school. It's been a good experience so far. They are doing reading comprehension with my son and he's doing better.

I've always known about Sylvan for a long time. I had my grandson there and they taught him how to read. I had my great-granddaughter there right now. So far, she's learning her ABCs. Not as fast as if she was in preschool, but she only goes two hours a week. It is an expensive adventure though. But they give me so much money for the kids and I'm putting that money into Sylvan.

Our son is a senior in High School, so he's very unique in this particular service center because most of the kids were in Middle School. But it's okay. He was fine with it. He came and said, "Sylvan was good today." Sylvan has absolutely the potential to turn the corner of any young person to different degrees. The more you commit to Sylvan, the better chance you have of turning your son or daughter around quicker. My son's now much more self-aware. He's much more aware of getting these instructions from professionals, outside of his mother and his father. Having professionals who are very experienced at getting children to turn the corner was really excellent for him. He's absolutely performing better. They very much helped him with his focus, his ability to push distractions aside and his ability to do work.
It's very helpful, but it's also very difficult for him. There's only so much that a kid can do. He's still having to do all of his homework. He's got after school curriculum and he wants to play all the time. So fitting it in, if it was six days a week, he would be very negative against it. But if it's just a couple of times a week, it's much better. The experience with Sylvan was awesome. We were very pleased with it. Absolutely, 100%, we would recommend Sylvan to a friend.

They do really well and they really work with me because I'm retired and I'm on a fixed income. They've helped my grandson with his reading. About a month after he started going, I noticed he's really reading a lot better. Then he really didn't care for it at first, but now, he really likes it. It's really helped a lot. He used to not want to read to me. If he read, he mumbled. But now, when he reads, he doesn't mumble anymore.

We did one class through Sylvan and it seemed to work. My daughter did the ACT prep course. She took the course most of the summer and then it was completed. She brought her ACT score up five points. That's pretty amazing. She had two different tutors. She really liked both of them. Had good experiences.

My son loves Sylvan. They helped him with things he was struggling on in Geometry. He's doing good because he's enjoying it and he's learning. But when I was first signing up, I was kind of told that they would grade homework and you just print it out. I have printed it out but it has never gotten graded. It could be lack of communication from my child though. Overall, it’s great.

My daughter is doing Math with Sylvan and I like the way that they work with the kids one-on-one. It's important for the kids to feel that they're being focused on. She's on her second month and so far, we're seeing a slight improvement. They're starting off really slow with her, and that's probably a good thing. Her confidence has definitely gone up when it comes to Math. Before Sylvan, she didn't want to talk about it and do it.

I have Sylvan learning that I'm using in Bloomington, Indiana for my son and my daughter. I also have my daughter going to Sylvan Learning for ACT support in Brooks School Road in Indianapolis. The services at the Sylvan on Brooks School Road in Fishers, Indiana with the personal touch is very good. Sue of the Bloomington store is excellent. My son lived in Bloomington for a while. He’s moving back up to Indianapolis and he needed help with chemistry, and Sue provides that. But the Sylvan up here is deficit. They don't have anybody to tutor chemistry. So Sue is tutoring my daughter who goes to an online school in Indianapolis, Connections Academy, over the internet. Sylvan is very good. But you do have to be careful because there are some deficits in teachers that they have on staff to provide the support.
We’ve had our daughter tutored at Sylvan for four years. Some of their executives are a little bit better than others. They've had turnover because of the pandemic. People get great job offers when they're really good at what they do, and that was what happened to the last executive director. But I've always found Sylvan to be very willing to work with me and I really like their program with the ACT and the SAT. They have an excellent program for them. I have recommended Sylvan to other people and parents that have struggled.

I want my son to get more comfortable with comprehension subject and Sylvan kind of fit the bill. I met Christine and I liked the faculty and staff. At the beginning of the class, they did a test on him and they customized a lesson plan for him. He showed some improvements in the small amount of time he went to Sylvan. Also, he was excited to go every weekend and was showing enthusiasm to go to the class. He liked the people he met over there. We had to get up at 4:00 or 4:30 AM and leave the house by 6:30, which is not something an 11-year-old wants to do every weekend on a Saturday, but he was willing to do that for at least three months.

My child focused on reading this time with Sylvan and he loved it. They have a reward system, and so he knows if he does his work, he gets points. Once a child gets so many points, he gets a reward. That's a good incentive for kids. They've done wonders for him. He's out right now because it is a summer program. But I told him that he’d get in school and get used to that, and we're gonna pick it back up at the beginning of next month.

We looked into Club V, and it was in-home tutoring, which I thought might be good, but getting my kids out of the house into an actual educational atmosphere really made a difference. We used Sylvan Learning mainly as summer so that the kids didn't fall behind and to help fill in some gaps because the last year had been so crazy. I am so grateful for the program. It definitely helped both my girls reach some of their goals and gain more confidence in themselves. We were planning to see how this school year went and then if we needed additional help throughout the year, to look into re-enrolling.
We had monthly check-ins where Deb went over the progress that they've made, the skills that they had mastered, and what they were still working on. Anytime I have questions, she was always available to help. People should go with Sylvan. It might be costly, but their child will definitely reap rewards from it whether it be socially, academically, or just confidence-wise.

My 10-year-old has been going to Sylvan for about three or four weeks now and she's more apt to try now than she was. I can see that we're on the right path and I'm pleased with it. Also, I like the structure that they use. And it can be twofold. They help to bridge those gaps with the information that they are missing but they also can assist with homework. My daughter is able to take what we're working on that week and they assist her with that field. I've had a pleasant experience with all of the staffers, as well. They've been professional. I highly recommend Sylvan, if anyone is kind of debating on whether or not to give it a try. It's worth it.

It’s going great with the tutor so far. They have progress report sessions every four or six weeks and the teacher goes over what my daughter is learning. My child did English and Math through Sylvan. They spent time going over drills and practice quizzes. The quality of the service was fine and the kids enjoyed it. My child's best friend was going there too. The learning was adequate and it seemed to improve their confidence. Sylvan seemed to do a satisfactory job. It was just a little more expensive than I predicted. There should be more pricing options available and they should potentially offer different pricing models.

Our child has some learning issues and she does a lot better one on one. She now has a lot more confidence in reading and she's doing great with it and sounding out words, whereas before she wouldn't try or she just felt like she couldn't do it and so she just didn't. Sylvan has done a great job of not only building confidence, but also filling up the holes that were potentially there. It's definitely opened up her brain in different parts that we were struggling with too.
When I pick her up, they’ve been great about holding her until they know I'm there, and then they'll walk her out. It makes me feel as comfortable as possible. They've also been able to communicate how she's doing in a way that I understand because I can see changes at home. I'm also concerned about the school next year, if we move on or if we repeat, and they've been helpful about knowing how to say it to me the correct way so then I know how to make an informed decision. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for. In this day and age, you need your child to have as much confidence as possible. If you don't build that at a young age, then they’ll get to middle school and they'll just start dwindling. Sylvan has been a godsend and the people there are kind and really sweet.

My child loves Sylvan and I love the follow up and the reports every month showing his progress. And throughout the month, the director calls and make sure everything is good. My son’s reading level was about third grade and now, he’s closer to fifth grade. So, it’s wonderful. He has more confidence and he’s excited to start school this year to apply some of the things he has learned. The cost is competitive in the market but Sylvan offers more, so that justifies the price. They break it down and there's the 3:1 ratio, which was very important, especially for my kids. People should go for Sylvan. It’s life changing.

I've been living in this neighborhood forever and I know when Sylvan first opened up. I've known about Sylvan for about 20 years. They've always had a great reputation of doing a great job with children, and I found out for myself too. My grandson, since the pandemic 2020, started having some issues with learning and with grades that had gone down. He's just a first grader. We know the tenacity, his level of maturity and we know certain things that he should be knowing and he was having some difficulty. So, immediately, I told his mom, "Look, we got to do what we got to do and I need for him to get Sylvan. And me and granddad are going to pay for it to get him the best." I know they are the best, so that's where I needed him to be.
We found out our grandson's glasses had played a part in it as well, but he just couldn't seem to get a grasp on what he was reading. His comprehension and confidence were a little low. Sylvan turned that around within weeks. That's what's so amazing about them. My grandson went from D to making the honor roll at the end of the school year. I will be using Sylvan forever. They worked with me with the payments, and from payments to adjusting his schedule when he needed to go from being there to virtual. They didn't recommend it but they allowed him to do it because they really wanted to help him, and that means so much. When the need arises again, we'll be back at Sylvan.

With Sylvan, I have my son in the reading and writing. He's already mastered at least 20 skills, so I think very highly of Sylvan. I love it. My son is a very people child. He has interpersonal skills that are very high, and he gets along with everyone. There's a couple of tutors that he loved and then there's one that he says is very strict. I was like, "Well, that's okay. That's good." He's doing very well.
I would tell my friends to give it a try and that they would be very happy with the success that their child will be getting in the skills needed, especially for middle school. My son is going to be starting middle school in the fall, so he needed a lot of extra skills in writing and spelling. It's been working very well so far. I'm very happy with it.

Sylvan is awesome, and my daughter, Amy, has no complaints about even going. She goes four hours a session, which is quite a bit, but that's because of how far we live away. They are more than accommodating for her needs and we can't say enough about what my daughter is learning and the things that she's picking up. We just had our conference and Amy's ahead of what they expected. We're done with Sylvan by the summer on August the 2nd, but we already got plans of continuing later on for other stuff. The people at the place are outstanding. Judy, the one I deal with the most, is full of information and a great person to talk to. I'm trying to get her to open up a satellite shop down here in Waterloo. We try and recommend to others and she would have better luck if she had a satellite shop here.

His writing was good and for him not being in school for a while, it was good progress for that short amount of time. It was definitely worth it. My child is no longer in the program because I had to put him in a summer camp, but when we have time to put him back, I definitely would. Overall, I highly recommend Sylvan. Our son is on an IEP through his school and it was horrible. They missed a bunch of stuff when he was in his early childhood development and kept pushing him through. They weren't really taking the time to teach him all the basic knowledges. This past year, I called the Sylvan Learning Center in our area and I talked to Leah. She asked us to do the assessment. I paid for it that day and set it up. It's been nothing but good ever since. We found the IEP teacher that he's working with this past year. She came on board with Sylvan. Our son had an amazing year this year.
I follow up with Leah personally. I have very good communication with her and we do the progress report. Our son lacks confidence. We want to build up his confidence a little bit so we're letting him do the whole tutoring thing. If there is an issue, they let us know. But there have been none. Everybody seems to be working really well together.

We were very glad Sylvan was an option this last winter when school was partially online. It's good, but not quite where we had expected. I know there are a lot of times where the instructors with two other kids or so. It's helping, but we're going to stop doing it when school starts back up this fall. But our Sylvan has that store where they get tokens and points. And that has been the cherry on top - what keeps our daughter going. She adores getting those points and then getting to save up and cash it in. That has been hugely beneficial. We have seen improvement with her reading and her skills. And having it this summer has helped her keep up with it.

I heard of Sylvan from a friend who took her daughter there. And her daughter's performance improved markedly, so I also wanted my son to join and help him improve in his performance. He had a challenge in Reading and Math. But when they screened him, they said he was doing okay in Math, so I just enrolled him for the English part. He started end of March and he improved. And for the first time, he was on the AB honor roll in school. Overall, my experience has been good. They also gave me some learning resources to work with my son at home and during this summer. And they also give me advice on how to help him adjust. They advised me on how to encourage him, how long I should let him learn to help him focus. So, it has been very helpful. If you want your child to have confidence in class and improve performance with English, Math or any kind of school testing, then you should consider Sylvan.

My grandchild went to a boarding school in East Texas and they skipped him up to 8th grade because he's very bright. But he missed some very significant things. We were wanting him to focus on math and writing. He scored really high with Sylvan. He was freshman college in his reading assessments but he can't write a paper. I wanted him to learn how to do that.
After Sylvan tested him, he needed no remedial work. I was happy to hear that. I pulled him back to 8th grade this year. When he got his grades, he did pretty well. But he needs to be stronger. He has really bad study skills and habits. I put him in Sylvan to get him pinned down to know how to study, write notes, and take charge of his learning patterns.
He really enjoyed one of his tutors a lot. Sadly, she's so good that she's gonna start training other tutors. My grandchild won't have her anymore and he's not gonna like that. The other two tutors were okay but my grandchild didn't have much time to establish much of anything with them. He only had them once or twice. Overall, I would recommend Sylvan. They're good. My son is doing Math with Sylvan. They said he is doing excellently. They said that they try to do one project a day and he’s up to two a day. So he's advancing pretty quickly. He's doing more than what he's supposed to. So that’s awesome. We have an end of the month consultation and that's when they tell me what he's working on and how good he's doing. So last month for the consultation, he had completed his kindergarten and first grade stuff. He has 30 more units to finish up and he would be second-grade level.
Sylvan is definitely worth the investment. I'm a single mom. I don't have a lot of money and I chose to homeschool. So Sylvan is the right investment because I see that my son is comfortable. He loves going to class every day and he's more comfortable with numbers than I could see. He never talked about numbers before. He knew his numbers but he didn't know adding and stuff. But now, he's completely thriving. He’s doing great. If you have a homeschooler like me, put a couple dollars aside because it’s completely worth it.

He learns not just how to do something, but also why you do it like this, so that he can understand those steps involved. He's doing algebra with them. Algebra is not easy. So, it's something you really have to get an understanding of to be able to build on it. My son's happy with his tutors. He didn't like his time slot, but he was worried about not having access to those same tutors. He took the regular SAT last weekend and felt that it was easier than the practice tests. He felt a lot more confident too. Sylvan offers an online medium as well. Unfortunately, my son does not do that but that's something that parents need to focus on. They could prep themselves by engaging more on the online prep prior to the in-person. Sylvan has been an excellent choice. We were desperate and going with them for our son's math worked out. My son is academically very bright, but this year was just very challenging for him for many reasons. He wasn't paying any attention in class at all so Sylvan was teaching him the concepts that he paid no attention to. He genuinely likes it whenever he goes and he feels very comfortable there. He has also gotten good rapport with his tutor. If you're looking for something, sit down and think about what you want from the tutoring. Our expectation was purely to get our son through the school year. Things have worked out wonderfully and we feel very confident being with Sylvan. The people whom we've spoken to have all been very good.

My son has been struggling with reading and he wasn't comprehending at first. He hasn’t been going to Sylvan that long but I have noticed he's trying a lot more. His confidence is built up where he's excited about trying to read and find out the words. I get updates on the regular and everyday, my son comes home and tells me how his session went. I would get a little slip of what he and his tutor went over throughout the evening and what subjects they focused on for the day. Sylvan is a great start for your child to improve.

I would tell others to go to Sylvan. I went there for about 2 years when I was in middle school and high school and it did help me to pass the state test for math. I wanted my son to go there because I had success. This time, it's the same nearly as when I was there. They've been helpful. You have to go 2 hours a week and it’s required for 10 months. Sometimes, I wish we didn't have to go 2 hours a week but I understand why. They need the extra help. It's hard when we're out of town. But what's great about them this time is that they offer Zoom where we can do Zoom learning. My son has done that and that goes well. We have a conference set up at the end of May to see how my son's doing. He's only been going since March but his reading teacher has told me that she has seen a little bit of a difference in him.

They've been able to more than keep up and reach beyond where their classmates are at, especially through COVID and the lack of education that they were getting. It was tough but they didn’t suffer at all because they’ve had Sylvan this whole time, especially in Math, because that's a building block piece. So, they've done well. We did it through the end of the school year last year and then we took the summer off. Our tutor emailed us a couple times. I changed my address and they wanted to send a Christmas card. I said that we could do Sylvan again so we got back to tutoring for the spring. We're very happy. I've referred a couple of friends and I take the car load every Monday and Wednesday of my friends’ kids.

I made the appointment and when I met Christina, I felt so comfortable and enrolled my kids right away. We are Spanish speakers and my kids are trying to learn more English to understand and learn the way to solve math problems here in the US. We're heading to 3 months and they've improved so much. They're doing so well. On Mondays they go there for 3 hours and for the rest of the week, they go there for 2 hours only. They are so happy to go there because the teachers show them how to do the things in a very clear way. They love their teachers. They are very excited to improve at this speed. They hope to be able to go to 7th and 8th grade in a better way and feel more comfortable. Sylvan has a great method. It’s so cool the way they do the things and evaluate. Every 15 days, they update me how the kids are doing. I'm very happy.

We're doing Sylvan for Math for my daughter who's 17. We really matched well. She really likes her Sylvan Learning tutor. So, it was a really good bet. She felt comfortable with her right away. She was able to express her questions easily. The biggest part is she felt like she was really understanding and nice, and that there was a lot of follow up questions by the tutor to figure out why she wouldn't understand something.
Her grades improved. She had her since the beginning of the year. This year, her grades are all As in Math. It went solid As, too. She was in the B range last year, so it wasn't bad. My daughter asked for the tutor. She's an A student except for that math class so we decided, proactively, to get the tutor before the year even began. This particular tutor is really good. It’s my first time doing Sylvan, so I hope they're all like this. But when I saw her qualifications, I was like, “Wow, this is a great, great opportunity.” Whoever hired that tutor and then matched her with Talia was great. I was so surprised. I hadn’t used them before, but we're really pleased with the experience.

So it's not like I'm really getting reports on how the tutoring is going. They have the portal, but it is not really updated as far as how she's progressing through the program.

I heard a lot of good things about Sylvan. I also teach and I heard other people that had used it and were pleased. My child's doing Math. His grades went up because he had help with the homework. Then he got better grades as a result of that. Plus, he understood what he was doing more because he had the extra explanation on stuff if he didn't understand something. He loves the experience. He felt the connection with his tutor. He really liked him, which made him much more positive about it and wanna do better and listen to him. In fact, he asked himself if he could continue when the sessions had ended. For him, it was a big deal.
They are very responsive, very friendly and helpful. The tutors themselves worked really well with the students. I've been really pleased with the fact that my son has been that positive about the experience. So, that’s helped a lot. I’ve seen improvement with him. They were absolutely fabulous with us. They walked us through the whole process. They explained everything and they waited for all of the hoops that had to be jumped through in order to have her start.
My child will be doing Sylvan for at least a year and a half for reading. She absolutely loves to go to Sylvan to learn because they teach her at her level. They make it fun and exciting and it's not so monotonous. I've seen just the behavior in her ability to go and learn something new, everything is more positive and it's not a drag to have to learn. Sylvan has been so much more helpful for math purposes because of the fact that the kids are in an environment where there are incentives. So the kids really want to do better and get those rewards. I have a child that's in fourth grade and then one that's in seventh grade. Sylvan has been super helpful for my daughter in seventh grade because she has been put into the harder math group and she's been stressing out. She thinks that if she can bring her harder math there, and it's another perspective and another strategy that they use, that's helpful for her getting it locked in. She's so used to getting it really quick, with just regular math, but when you switch over to algebraic math, she's having a little bit more of a transition struggle. The teachers at school require them to have the algebraic strategy written out. But the tactics that the Sylvan tutor has shown her have been helpful to figure it out.
For my son who is 10, math is a little more of a struggle. He'll try to fight it at the beginning where he thinks he can do it and then coming to the end thinking maybe he can't do it. I'm not a teacher and I get frustrated teaching my kids this new math. But the tutor from Sylvan can teach them the new math. It's an added layer especially this year because there are specific requirements that are outlined for these students and they are really hard. The lady who works with my daughter is good about communicating. She's good about checking our email so if I ever send anything to her, she gets it quickly and responds quickly too. My daughter likes working with her and I love that the time schedule is so flexible. My daughter’s focus is on psychology and study skills. Her grade has improved in Psychology. It is an AP class and it’s very difficult. She’s only in tenth grade and it’s college level material. She's very capable because she always has been and she's always been very disciplined and mature for her age. But that maturity has slowed down a whole lot and she wasn't applying herself. Also, there’s a boyfriend involved now. He’s a good kid and I try to remind myself that I was a teenager once too. So, I know that it's a phase she's going through. But I got to the point where I have to do something to help her.
I had always heard good things about Sylvan so I checked into it and liked it. So it's been a good experience. My daughter's a little easygoing, friendly and very social. But still, she's 15 and for many teenagers, when their parents are the ones that sought out tutoring because they were unhappy with their grades, sometimes they don’t have the best attitude about it from the very beginning. And that has meant everything to me that she likes working with her. So that's a positive. The tutor has been good with her.
The only issue I've had is that there's one girl that works in Sylvan that if she were to be assigned as my daughter's tutor, I would have turned it down. One day, she was in charge while the director was doing something with another student and she didn't know what she was doing as well as what I was doing there. It was an awkward experience. I did tell Sylvan about it and they probably talked to her about it. Whoever I had been texting when I first started looking into it was super nice. She passed it on to the director of our local center. She emailed me a response and I appreciated that. Because a lot of times, you express something and you never hear back from anybody. She said that it would be addressed and that the girl was not usually like that. It's been a good experience for us with Sylvan and I'm a teacher, so I would recommend it to fellow students and fellow moms who might need that.

That's when I started looking into tutoring. I saw that Sylvan was doing the tutoring in person. I wanted that because my kids are better in person than on the computer.
I got my kids on to there and testing was done. The testing point of what I know where my kids stopped was what they told me. They gotta be doing something correct because how would they know the same thing that I knew? I signed up the kids for the program after they did their testing and I've been liking it ever since. My kids are excited about what they learn and they tell me about them. I'm seeing progress. I'm seeing more confidence in them and in what they are doing.
The focus of their learning is on English and language. With math, you can pick it up if you know how to read and you know how to concentrate. But when it comes to reading, if you don't know how to pronounce and sound out some words, you're not gonna get anywhere. The tutors are doing a great job. Communication and everything is the key and that's what they're doing. The communication level is at 100 to me. They communicate with me about anything and I can go in there. There's a lady named Ana and when she's there and I have any questions, she would talk to me. When I had to change my days and times, she was right on it with a snap of a finger. She handled it as fast as she could and I like that.
My kids' friends and parents would be talking to me and telling me that their kid is struggling. I always tell them, "Even if you don't continue with the program, go to Sylvan and do the assessment test. And at least, they'll tell you the levels and then you say if you like it or not." When my daughter did interviews, she said how great it was that she did it at Sylvan. She told a reporter the other day that she had reading help and how great it was. She loved it. She enjoyed her teachers that were trying to help her get back on track. Sylvan is doing a great job. They should make the program affordable for ones that can't get it.

Sylvan's communication has been a little inconsistent at times, but overall, it has been okay. The initial evaluation testing and how they had a meeting with the parents to go over what they tested was great. Also, I like that they have progress reports every four to six weeks. And I can see what my daughter is working on online. I'm seeing more confidence in her, and more of an effort to learning. It has been great. We're already thinking about putting in our next child, if he needs any help.

My daughter lost the love of learning, being what happened with COVID. She didn't know what really even school was and the whole learning on the computer thing was just not her style. So she lost a lot of confidence and motivation. Sylvan has worked with her and she’s doing really well. The biggest thing that has come out of that is her confidence and her love of learning is back. She likes the token system that they use. That’s a good motivator. She also really likes her tutor. She has her days where she doesn't want to go but then she comes out of it and she can go for two hours. She really loves it. It has really been amazing seeing her change like that.

Sylvan Learning Center is a great place and it's reasonably priced. I used them many years ago when my children were young and I had great results from them. My grandson is struggling because of missing so much school because of COVID. He does not do well with virtual learning and he was having a real hard time. We have put him in Sylvan and he has really begun to understand and thrive. We went in for a quick interview and went over the things that my grandson needed to work on. The guy there explained to us exactly what they were going to do.
My grandson is actually learning and doing above and beyond what they have expected out of him. He could understand things that he didn't think he could learn because he was having such a hard time. There are three kids to one person, so they get real individual lessons or training. It is really boosting my grandson's confidence in himself. I'm thrilled and I hope to continue to do this as long as he needs it.

Their goal was to have him middle of second grade level by the time the year's over.

I called and Sylvan knew exactly what I needed. We're having issues with reading comprehension and they said, "You've come to the right place." They did an assessment, we came up with a plan, and everything has been very orderly and organized, which has been great. They gave us a very nice assessment in the beginning and in the next couple of weeks, we'll do a marking against that assessment to see what kind of progress we're making. It has only been five weeks, but we feel we are seeing progress already.
I liked that Sylvan had an in-person option because that is important for the learning process. And it was nearby and convenient, which was helpful for us. Also, they have been very flexible with us, like we needed to go remote for a few weeks and they allowed that, and they've just been easy to work with. In terms of costs, we found it reasonable, all things considered. It was less expensive than the other place that we looked up that only offered virtual. We did consider that we probably could have just found a college student for 40 bucks an hour versus Sylvan for 75 bucks an hour. But because it comes with this whole process versus a college student just taking their best guess as to how to work at it, we feel it has been worth the additional money. We've been very pleased with Sylvan. It has been a good experience for us so far.

It’s also a little expensive. But if you have the opportunity to even try it out for a couple of months, it’s worth it. Before, my child would give up really easily. We've had positive experiences with Sylvan. We have used Sylvan in the past with our younger child. A year's worth of tutoring to Sylvan was successful. Our child was having trouble with math. We had moved multiple schools in their building block years. When he was in third grade, we were debating on retaining him and decided to try Sylvan over the summer. We saw a big improvement in between his third and fourth grade year, and he is on par to taking more advanced math classes now. So, it definitely worked.
We brought our older one now here for the SAT prep, and they are two different facilities. One is in Brighton, and this one is in Grand Blanc. We called the Brighton facility first, and they didn't have the ability to do one on one because of COVID. They just didn't physically have the space or the staff, and they recommended calling the Grand Blanc location. They were able to help us. That was a positive thing on their staff members that they were referring internally between one another.
My older one who was doing SAT prep is feeling like he's getting a lot because they have a young lady that is working with him. She is a college student right now. So everything was relatively recent for her. She's giving him pointers on things also based on the fact that it's not been that long since she's taken the SAT. Going with Sylvan is expensive. However, I do feel that it has been worth it in our case. We don't know the results yet of our child's SAT prep, but it's giving him confidence.

It allows my child to be able to focus directly on that teacher and those steps without it having a lot of other students involved. It was indicated that there would be a monthly assessment. Sylvan focused on sounds, letter recognition and number with my daughter who is in kindergarten. It's a stepping stone for all kids at that age. We felt our daughter was going to miss out. The teacher didn't come to us and tell us. We just had to nail it in, and then keep drawing her to give us more information. Based on her progress report, we weren't satisfied. It seemed like she was behind so then, we went and had her assessed. And when they told us that she was a semester behind, then we just wanted to make sure that she grasped all the new concepts in kindergarten to make sure that she can carry that forward in first grade. Since our daughter has been to Sylvan, we noticed that when we do our homework with her, she's more independent and identifies recognition of numbers. Before, she couldn't count past 10. And now, she counts ahead of that and identifies with all the number sequences, sounds, letter recognition. We could tell.

On Math, the tutor is focused with the actual lesson that my son is working on at that time, and then language arts, fundamental items. He has a lot more confidence. It has been nice for him to have somebody that knows the information inside and out that can help him with stuff right away instead of me trying to fumble through the internet or whatever resource. He's doing good. He's high B and low As this time.
We've had a great experience. Sylvan communicates well, allowed us to move a couple of days here and there when we needed to, and my son has good feedback. We did not enjoy Kumon for the reason that they had homework that my son would have to take home. My son goes to a private school. So to keep up that homework plus Kumon's homework was not working. Then if you missed a day, then you had to redo all those pages. So it was giving more stress than helping. So I took him out of that and we went to Sylvan. My son is way more into sports than studies and he loves going there. He loves the people at Sylvan. I asked him the other day who his favorite teachers were, and he named all of them. That's saying a lot coming from a kid that doesn't enjoy studying all the time. So they've been great.
My son does math and reading. I have noticed a difference because even when we are doing homework, he'll use concepts that the teachers have shown him because private schools do it a little more difficult because they accelerate. So they don't spend as much time explaining concepts to the core, whereas Sylvan will review it and explain those concepts to him. So sometimes he uses their concepts in class, which is a huge plus.
The teachers make a huge difference because it can be the same exact program with different teachers and it may not work. They are very accommodating and extremely nice. They actually make it fun for my son. That's huge because most of the time, kids are already burnt out, and to add them into another educational program, completely, they just shut it down. So it's helpful that they find fun ways for him to learn. So Sylvan has been a blessing for me. But it's pretty pricey and it's difficult to do it year-round. So I just try to find during the summertime and the end of the school year to give him another boost than just shutting down.

When I started looking into tutoring services, Sylvan is only six minutes away from my home. Plus, when I looked them up online, I saw some good reviews, as well as they had a free evaluation. They were the only place I looked into and just decided on. My son goes for Reading. But he did test that he could use some Math help. But we decided that the Reading was more urgent to get him going. And we would just focus on that, hoping everything else would follow once the reading got that closer to where it needed to be.
My son always seemed like he was happy. It was working. I saw results when we would have our monthly meetings. I would see the increase on the test, on the little reports that they would give. And my son started to build some more confidence by doing better. I entrusted his tutoring into Sylvan, and saw results on the tests, reports, and just felt, “Okay, well, this must be working.”
Holly, the director, was great. However, she said she didn't feel that my son's tutoring, scheduled the way it would be, would be conducive to him growing. She just was concerned with it being. When my daughter started remote learning, immediately, she was having some challenges in math that she had never had before with the in-person learning model. I started doing research. I googled math tutors in our area. Sylvan came up with a couple local owners. I was familiar with the Sylvan name from commercials, and I also went to Sylvan when I was a child in Oregon.
Sylvan has done an excellent job. They explained to me what the program was. They did an assessment of my daughter, Ava, to give me an idea of where she is contextually in math, and then where she really could do the work. That was really great to know because even her school hadn't given me that kind of information. It was kind of weird just getting her on the schedule. Because we're in the evening, so she goes to school remotely, and then, jumps on the Zoom call. But after we got all the calendar invites, it's been really smooth. We added an extra day. So, we're using Sylvan two days a week for just math skills and one day a week for homework help. We work from home, and she's doing remote. So, we don't always have the time to help her with her homework.
Ava had some trepidations about Math, and she didn't have a lot of confidence in Math. Sylvan has really helped. Now, she's like, “I'm confident in Math, I feel good.” She'll raise her hand in class and read off her answers. With word problems, she wasn't fully reading the question, and she would get answers wrong on basic computation. I've seen an improvement in that. When I called Sylvan, she was a 72 in Math, and now she's a 95 and that's been consistent.

With the coronavirus and all that stuff that's been going on with my son in school, there was a decline in some of his reading. He's in first grade, so this is kind of their foundation being set up. So I was looking into who were still open and available for help, and Sylvan was one of the options that was nearby, and that I had seen over the course of years, like even from when I was in school. When I'm thinking of tutoring or help for a child, I would look for somebody that has longevity like Sylvan versus other word of mouth places that I've heard.
My son noticed that he wasn't thriving as much as he was prior to school, letting out the previous year. His excitement for learning picked back up since he started with Sylvan, and so that was enough for me to be happy with the progress. Also, they get a lot of reading tests in first grade and his scores have gone up. So I know that he's getting what he needs to get from them, even if it's just for his little two days out of the week with that. I've also noticed that they're reinforcing what we already do at home.
Some teachers are more kind of passive than others when it comes to getting the children to do it correctly. It may just be a difference of they don't really know how a child was gonna respond to them pushing the envelope every now and then, because they don't have the same relationship I have as his mom. They should make sure that they're pushing the child every time, even if they have to give a little encouragement along the way, and making sure that the child is really understanding what is going on and making use of the time that they are there because we pay by the hour. If you got a child that’s sitting and they're struggling in the beginning, it is not okay to just let that slide by in an hour because that's time that they do need to be using to focus on actually building the skills that they're going there for.

Aside from the fact that the world is a dumpster fire and her tutoring was not assisting her at all, she was having a really tough time with AP Calc. So, it wasn't that she wasn't turning anything in or she was just literally bombing the tests. Sylvan has really helped her grasp the concepts of it and passing her tests now. She has significantly improved her grades. It was worth every penny.
We tried a different tutoring option. Her rugby coach has an advanced Math degree, so she met with her a handful of times. But I don't know if it was like a level of comfort that she wasn't really expressing to her that she still wasn't even understanding after she leaves with her. She did that a few times. After that, we decided, we'd rather just go pay where we can really dictate exactly what's going on and she won't feel bad about it.
My daughter is 17. She's a senior in high school. So, I only went to Sylvan for the first session to pay and get her signed up. Then, we set her up for weekly sessions for 10 weeks. We work out of the Carmel, Indiana Sylvan. As soon as I made a request for more information, I received a phone call in five minutes. We were sitting in the office the very next day, scheduling assessments. They were right on it. Our child does both math and reading. Instead of pushing forward with what she was learning, they backtracked and mastered some of the gaps in her knowledge before they got current, and that really solidified her being able to move forward.
Then at first, I was a little hesitant about her sharing a table with someone else, rather than one-on-one. But I realized that that's actually been beneficial for her because they feed off of each other, and it makes it a little more enjoyable to sit there for two hours. They called me literally the next day, and I was blown away by how quick their response was. Even their availability to make an appointment for the assessment was really quick. We set up an assessment pretty much the next day. At the assessment, the director showed me what the price options were for the packages. I like that they had the prepaid sessions. We signed up for the prepaid 60-session. Also, they were willing to work with me on dividing up the payment. So, we set up on a four-month plan. They were very flexible with me, which I appreciate.
They told me, “If anything happens and you need to change your payment plan, if you need to change the amount, the month we complete this, or even if you guys need to end tutoring to her, we’re very negotiable and flexible about that.” So I really appreciated that. I love the fact that the environment was very welcoming. My son felt comfortable right away. The director brings her dog to work. His name is Buddy, and he is super calm. He’s the calmest dog I've ever met. He’s perfect for the environment. He is well-trained. My son has anxiety. So, for him feeling super-comfortable because he saw the dog, he was able to make a connection with the director. They look forward to tutoring because of that.
I love the classes they have, the stuff in-store, and the token system. The tutor pretty much started from the basics, like reviewing all the special sounds, the three-letter words, and basically getting that foundation mastered for my son to feel more comfortable and moving on to next words, and special blends. I'm just surprised. How do they get kids focused in one hour to get all this accomplished? They do homework, flashcards, and a little bit of tablet time. So, I'm really happy that we did Sylvan. They focus every day on one thing, which is good. That makes it more, for my son, to practice. The learning experience is much easier for him. I would definitely recommend it.

Sylvan evaluated my son first and figured out where he was struggling. They figured out where they had to go back and start, and then move forward. So, they have a whole plan of what skills to develop with him. He's done some 30 sessions right now and he's already moved up a grade in his knowledge base. His confidence levels are really high. It's a lot higher than what they were when he started. He's always struggled in math. He told me the other week that he really likes Sylvan because they take their time. They don't rush him. He likes math for the first time in forever. So they're helping him. I would definitely recommend them. I was a little leery going in because my son does have a learning disability when it comes to math. But in just over a month of him doing these classes, there's a total difference in him. He doesn't fight me to get online to do the classes.

We have them right now for Reading and the one-to-one attention helped. Soon, we'll have them for Math. I'm satisfied with my experience so far.

My son is in the 2nd grade and we have Sylvan for Reading. There's a little bit of improvement. We speak with the teachers from time to time and they said he was doing really good. I like Sylvan. My son loves it.
