Sylvan was in my area and I knew that they had a good record. I felt like my money would not be wasted with them. I would see results. The only thing is, it's expensive. I had a super easy signup process. They evaluated my son, and then provided a recommendation based off of his assessment. They evaluated him for Reading and Math, but his Math was fine. They've just been focusing on Reading Comprehension and he has definitely improved a lot in the last two months.

One of my children was with Sylvan since over seven years ago and I liked how they helped her. I had one of my other children who was struggling in school, and Sylvan was the first one that came up in mind. And then, I went online and advised them and called, and they got back to me right away and set up arrangements to go and meet them. It was easy and fast to get my child set up. They're now doing Reading and Math. First, they did tests to see where she was at, and then they saw what areas needed to be worked on. They then concentrated on those areas and gave me a progress of her. Every two weeks, they do a meeting with me to let me know how she was doing. It's a setup of steps that they go by to make sure that she knows what she is doing. They move on to the next stage where she needs to work on.

I saw a lot of the commercials and decided to get my children the assessment because I felt that they should have a more tutoring on some grade level stuff. It happened right before COVID. Continuing that when school let out, it was very helpful for my children to already be online doing that stuff. Both of them were in the reading comprehension and the tutors were excellent. My children are done with their hours. They loved it. It was amazing. I've already actually suggested Sylvan to other people. You should do it.

I've told the school that Kylie was behind but they wouldn't listen to me. They don't know my kid better than I do. We had a meeting and they did a testing on her. And when Sylvan did the testing on her, she was second grade Reading, and that's what I had guessed. She's about second grade Reading and third grade Math. She started going downhill with Math when the school started doing the reading problems. And I don't want her to get to fifth grade until she knows it. If she doesn't feel she can answer these questions, she will just do as they always did. They will just keep pushing her off to the next teacher. Sylvan has been my absolute lifesaver. I love it.

I had my son go there as well when he was younger. That's how I knew about Sylvan. My son's 22 now. He ended up graduating two years early. When he was in first grade, and part of second grade, he missed a whole year of school because he was bit by a dog and he had to do rehabilitation. The school was going to hold him back. We found Sylvan and through that summer he went to them, and he learned more in that summer. Not only did he catch up the year that he missed, he was ahead of half the year of the next year just in that short amount of time, just through the summer which was, back then, a little longer than what they have now but not by much.

Kylie absolutely loves Sylvan. She does not like school, period. There's no doubt in my mind she doesn’t like school because she doesn’t know the heck what they’re doing. On the other hand, there’s Sylvan that makes her feel as if even the slightest little thing that she is doing is just wonderful and great. She has two different tutors. Math is male and the Reading is female, and both of them say that she does absolutely wonderful on the one on one. Also, she is excited to go. She would get up on Monday and Tuesdays and be like, “I gotta go to school today!” That's rare because now she says, “Gosh, school starts. I hate that. Why does school have to start? Tell them to shut back down.” I wish I have put Kylie sooner than waiting until I got all these numbers and stuff. I should have went with my gut instead of listening to the school, but they kept assuring me that she's meeting her goals. Her goals must’ve been four plus four.

We've tried online tutoring options and we went with Sylvan because we understood that my daughter was starting to fall behind with her skills. The online tutoring options were not working. We needed to have a real person guiding her along the way of relearning what she had lost. Sylvan came up in a conversation with one of my mom friends and her son does Sylvan.

We’re doing Math right now and we’re looking at incorporating reading or English components in the future. We started off with two teachers then we ended up switching after my daughter had spoken with the director. The speaker was on and my daughter butted in and she gave her opinion on it. After that point, we changed to a teacher named Peter. What my daughter likes about Peter is that he doesn’t give her the answers. He’ll ask her what is the answer for this, and if she doesn’t know it, will talk through her thought process. When she gets to the point where she’s stumbling, he’ll then help guide her towards what the answer would be. The other teachers were doing it a lot of times and didn’t ask for her opinion.

I work from home and so I hear the classes and I really like Peter. He is doing an amazing job of engaging with the students. It’s summertime and it’s really hard for them to focus on what they’re doing. They wanna be outside. They wanna be playing. They want to do summer stuff. But it’s a learning component they need to do for 45 or 50 minutes. Peter is able to engage her to the point where she’s learning something new. She is going ahead with the lessons. I have already told even her teacher at school that we’re gonna be doing Sylvan until December then we’ll reevaluate. If the finances weren’t an issue, she’d be continuing throughout the schoolyear because we already know she’s behind from what she’s lost from March, so we’re still playing catch-up. I would have no qualms staying with the program. It’s amazing.

They're helping my son with study skills, writing and reading. He is doing his summer reading on his own. Right now, it's hard to see if it'll affect it or not because he doesn't have school. But he is following the plan they set out. So far, so good. They have a good plan. The results remain to be seen, but he does seem to enjoy going and it does seem to be helping him for the little bit we can see. He has developed a really nice rapport with one of the teachers. Everything's been really easy and really good.

I have a small business in Garner and one of our customers has a Sylvan Learning Center. I think a lot of her and since she's another small business owner, I decided to give them a try. With them, my daughter is focusing on learning her letters, comprehending stories, and rhyming to get her ready for kindergarten. She loves her sessions and looks forward to meeting with the two different tutors she works with, which is the most important thing for me. She love them dearly, too. I'm very happy with Sylvan and I think a lot of them. They do such a good job with my child. For her sessions, I get her set up and I don't always stay in the room, but I'm nearby. They make it fun for her, she's learning a lot, and she seems to be retaining them. They also challenge her and she gets a lot of enjoyment out of it. Overall, our experience has been better than expected.

We have a very dear friend who recommended Sylvan and she recommended it because her son went there and she felt like it really helped him. When she suggested that we give them a try, we were very happy. We're really happy with the way it's set up. I've thought of sending my daughter to Sylvan for several years, but unfortunately, every time I talk to anyone, they would say it's very expensive and I kinda didn't wanna go that route. It is very expensive but I've gotten to the point where I realized that I could try and hold on to a nickel and use that nickel to take care of my child until I die or hope that she does better with school, get the most out of it, and then take care of herself.

The tutoring is helping my daughter with her mathematics and helping rebuild her foundation. What I have noticed is that she really likes the Sylvan teacher and because of that, she now views math not with that typical, "Oh, I hate math," but more like, "Oh, bring it on." That's a good attitude. He really encourages her. Also, the manager of our local Sylvan office is a super person. She loves to sit and talk to him, which I think is great because she feels like this is somewhere that she belongs.

In Carrollton, there are four tutorial centers on multiple corners. I went to each one of them and it seemed like Sylvan concentrated more on one-to-one tutoring which is the best for my daughter versus a small group. The center manager, who's also the salesperson, talked all positive things, too. She was all bubbly, was trying to get everything going, and she sold me on Sylvan. But I investigated Sylvan ahead of time, too. Plus, I had other folks in other states use Sylvan and they said that it was really a good experience.

So far, they were trying to help my daughter with Geometry and the instructor, Tommy, was great. He seemed to hit it off with my daughter. But the billing and follow up from the people administrating were pretty horrible. They have sort of a love them and leave them type of attitude. We had to work something out multiple times on the start dates then, because our billing day is on the 14th, as soon as it hits the 15th, we'd be charged another month. I told them that I only signed up for 24 hours of tutoring because the kids would go back to school. I had multiple emails and phone calls back to their center manager but she never returned them. So, that's poor customer service.

After she sold me on the policy, she moved on to her next sale and never returned phone calls or emails. That’s perturbing because next year, I was thinking of using Sylvan again for SAT prep. I've been in sales my whole life and you got to follow up on a phone call or email. You just can't let it slide and to do is sort of a used car salesperson attitude. But the new manager who's in charge of day-to-day operations at Carrollton, Lydia, was great. She really stepped up to try to resolve everything. Sylvan was also flexible in terms of schedules.

My son was going to be going into algebra as a 7th grader at the time, so we decided to give him a head start on learning some of the language and the terminology. We wanted him to kinda get his feet wet a little bit so that when he got there, it wasn't so overwhelming. This year, his tutor is focusing on teaching him geometry. My daughter started there, too. Because of all this e-learning, I wanted to make sure that she doesn’t lose any of what she learned. She's on the borderline of being high-ability, but her focus skills are not as in tune as my son's so we're taking here there this year for some focus. She got analyzed on where her weaker points are and they tailored a curriculum around her weaker points but using it to help her hone in on those focus skills.

So far, my children's experiences at Sylvan have been excellent and the teachers have been great. Getting the service is worth the money and worthwhile. It's also valuable for the kids, especially right now in this environment. It has closed learning loss in the summer for them and it closes a skill gap, too. But my kids are not there because it's remedial work. It’s advanced work for them. Still, if I needed the service for some basic concept work or base level work for a child, I could see how they would be able to help in that way also.

I was calling Sylvan for a friend that was in South Carolina. My question was about their Pearson affiliated program and I wanted to make sure that it was Pearson. Pearson's materials and resources are phenomenal. I taught special ed and they wouldn't give you a lot of material. So, I would go out and lobby with Pearson to give me samples so that I could use them with my special ed kids. The rep from Sylvan was very knowledgeable. She confirmed that it was Pearson and she also told all about the enrollment process which had three steps. She even listened because I was multitasking. She was really good and very patient. So I called my friend to tell him to get on the stick and get that enrollment done right away.

I realized that my son couldn't grasp a lot of words and reading. It was a real challenge for him. Everything we tried to do together was a difficult nightmare and it was absolutely brutal. So I started looking into tutoring and then I had read about Sylvan. When I spoke to the lady in charge over there, she said the tutors are all teachers that work there. That made me feel better because at least they have the training. They’re not a kid or some adult that might be just wanting to do this for some extra cash over the summer. It made me feel comfortable that there would be professionals who go to school for this stuff because I have no idea what I'm doing when I try to teach my son. They also have specialists that come in and help with his reading. So it made me feel a lot more comfortable and it was a small environment. Everybody was very nice there. So, that's why it all worked out.

My son really liked his experience with Sylvan, which is weird because he doesn't like anything school-wise. I would ask him, “How do you like it here?” And he would say, “Oh, I like it so much better. It's fun.” He likes the fact that he can get tokens and have a reward system. He can go to the little Sylvan store and pick out some little toy. But he's always saving up so that he can get different things. It's pretty awesome that he's able to kinda have a goal to set. Like the harder he works, he knows the more stuff he can get. It helps.

One of my girlfriends looked into tutoring services for her daughter and I told her that my son is in Sylvan. She told me that that's where they wanter their daughter to go but it was a little too expensive. But I told her that Sylvan gave us some options and that she can finance the stuff. I don't wanna pay another frigging payment every month but if it benefits the child, then I feel I'd be doing him a disservice if I didn't try and invest in his education or his future, because sitting there watching him struggle is so tough for me.

Sylvan was sweet and nice, and everything went fine. I got onto it late in the game so we only had about three sessions. Sylvan offered a free hour. It was a certain time of the day and that worked perfect for my situation. I could choose any of the learning my son did. He was given a Chromebook and the tutor was able to assist him with usually either Science or Social Studies, like History. Those were the things that worked out to where it would allow him to help my son to be able to do it while they were doing a video chat for that hour. And it worked out great. It gave me a little time to be able to get stuff done and free up some time for me and some stress. So, it was lovely.

Right now, my son is in school so I don't necessarily need anything. When school starts back, I'm leaning for him to go back. But I definitely will keep Sylvan in mind if I ever want to do tutoring or reach out to them. They helped me to feel comfortable with my son being able to do it in the future. I haven't decided to keep it going because cost is a concern for me, but I feel comfortable with letting my friends and family know about them, and that they did a good job.

My son struggles a lot with reading. He was diagnosed with ADHD, and he's really behind. When the school went out because of COVID, I was really worried that this is gonna mess him up. So, I kept looking online trying to find him places, and Sylvan popped up. I read the reviews. I called them just trying to see what they did and what they offered. My son needs a lot of help. He's very impatient. They just put him on medication. So, I was worried about him because a lot of people say they're good with kids, but a lot of people aren't, and they don't have any patience. The reviews on Sylvan that I found online were really good. They spoke really highly about the program.

Also, when I called, I found that they were doing it online. That was very convenient. I live too far from the actual center for me to go and take him. So, I like that they do Zoom. Then, they had some type of special going on at the time too. It was like $100 off the first enrollment for the family. There was a lady at Sylvan who has been a complete blessing. My son couldn't read anything. His self-esteem was horrible. He hated reading and didn't want to learn anything. I think he was just too overwhelmed. He would say things that broke my heart like he's too dumb, he doesn't want to do it and he just can't do it. The lady had done better than the actual teachers have.

When my son first started doing it, it was a bit of a struggle because he has low self-esteem when it came to reading. Between Sylvan and maybe a little bit of the medication to help him focus a little bit too, helped out. He was able to read to us. It was only five sentences, but still, this boy couldn't read anything at all. His tutor has been awesome. She knows how to redirect them. She's patient with them. My son is everywhere sometimes, but she knows how to ring him in. She knows how to work with him. She knows the children's learning style. She knows how to mold it around him, and it really does work. This whole COVID thing was crazy, but I'm happy that I found something. Because if it weren't for that, I wouldn't have found Sylvan, and I wouldn't have known about the program, and my son would still be struggling going to school. Sylvan is good at what they do.

My friend had an experience with Sylvan and I decided to give it a try. My son has autism and he has been through a lot between different schools and other experiences. So, he was behind. He’s very smart and it’s just the way he learns. I have a scholarship for him that he receives through the State of Arizona, Department of Education. So, I had some money and I put that towards the tutoring. When we went to Sylvan and did it, I was hoping he was gonna make progress, and he has. He enjoys his tutors and he’s gaining more skills than the average student. It was double the amount for reading. He was supposed to gain 45 skills and he gained 90. Also, he was almost triple than the average student obtains in Math. So, he’s been doing good. We’ve been doing the virtual since this whole COVID situation and he has been doing good with it too.

Sylvan needs to make sure that they’re consistent with the times and try the best they can to keep him skipping weeks. He wasn’t able to talk before and we’ve been doing speech therapy, and his consistency is the number key. When they’re doing it over and over again such as the repetitions with the letter sound and trying to blend all the words, it’s important that they’re able to make sure to stay with the schedule. Reinforcing at home like for math and reading are kinda along the lines that Sylvan does like the phonics-based stuff for reading. My son has only been in it since early February and he’s reading books now. Doing a little extra at home makes a difference.

My son was in the middle of third grade when he got assessed and he was at kindergarten level. The school was doing more stuff when he didn’t even have the foundation to try to do it. It was kinda waste of time. They should’ve been doing the basics with him first and then building up those skills. The reason why I’m happy that we did Sylvan is because they did that. My son is in the middle of second grade now and it was only in February when he started. So, it has been amazing and the staff has been great which includes Mary Ann. Victoria, who does all four different Sylvan Learning Centers in our area, has been great too.

I went online and googled tutors in the area and Sylvan popped up. The main focus was for Math and English. My kids earned their grades. They didn't appear to be struggling too much. They had a little bit of trouble with some of the Math, but overall he's okay and he did well this school year. They just changed management though and all the tutors are not the same. But my kids really like the original manager and his staff, his teachers and they seemed really sweet.

They really connected with Ms. Katherine and really like her way of explaining things to them. They were pretty disappointed when they figured out Katherine wasn't there anymore and probably wasn't coming back 'cause her desk was cleared out. We're pretty sad. The new girl's name is Sarah, but we've only seen her twice. But she seems okay so far.

The only issue that we have is their billing. There's no consistency in the billing. Sometimes, it's a ton of money. Other times, it's not. Sometimes, it's twice in a week. My husband brought it up with them in early March right before everything got shut down with the quarantine. But we never heard anything back. It seems like when the management changed and they didn't make that known to anybody that management was changing. Just all of a sudden one day the same people weren't there. I don't even know anybody's name.

We had all our print outs and he said, he will look into it. Then the quarantine happened and he wasn't there when I went last week. I was gonna come to see how now since we just started back if it's leveled out now or what. They probably owe us money. The billing should be pretty consistent. And we didn't miss anything or if we had to change the date, we pick another date within the same week. So, I'm not really sure what's going on there.

I enrolled my child in the college prep classes. We're doing a 12-week course. It's twice a week until he takes the ACT. It would be better though if it was face-to-face. But so far so good. The tutor came and did the testing. They saw what they needed more help on and they worked through that on the tablet. I saw the improvement at home and in school. The learning experience was good. It was just a little disappointing because they said it would take a certain amount of hours and that wasn’t true. When they did the testing, they said from where she’s at to where she needs to be will take this amount of hours. I bought those. She’s not close to being where she needs to be. She’s still very behind. Then there was not much discounts going on for us being military. There’s nothing for multiple kids as well. I don’t get anything if I don’t prepay. I had to put 5,100 to be able to even get a 15% discount.

I love this location, I love the people. Everybody there literally knows what they’re doing. But the price is outrageous. It’s worse than paying for a private school. The estimated time takes longer than what they say. I will literally go bankrupt to be able to get my kid to par because they said it was 160 hours, and she’s not even close to being where she needs to be whatsoever.

They seem to be doing really well with my son. He’s doing a lot better. Since COVID hit March, he’s had very little other instructions because the school system did nothing. Sylvan is all the instruction he’s had since March other than just the school sending home some work pages, which I thought were not helpful.

When I called Sylvan, I was impressed with the lady that I spoke with and what they were offering and just went with them. My reason for calling them was reading but then decided I wanted Math, too. My son always loved school and he went through a phase where he loved to read. Then, all of a sudden, he didn't want to pick up a book at home. We were starting to see the struggle but we didn't want it to get to where he was really getting to it and it could become a big issue to where it started affecting him of loving school. But with Sylvan, that has definitely been prevented.

He's doing virtual classes four days a week even though his center has opened back up. He does two days of Math and two days of reading. When he's done every day, he would say, "Oh, I don't want it to be over". He looks forward to it very much and he really enjoys doing it. They've worked with him on his addition and subtraction. They've also started him on multiplication and division, which is amazing because he's going into third grade and he's doing great with it.

Part of us for doing this was to build his confidence because we felt like he was little below where he should be. He just finished second grade but he won't be turning eight until July 19th. Add the virus thing in and being out of school for a semester. So we really wanted to make sure he was up to par, if not a little ahead. They have done above and beyond what we've been wanting. His reading has come leaps and bounds too. He's very quick and they've been teaching him to slow down in his reading and more for comprehension. I've been able to see in his schoolwork at the end of the year that he has started to slow down more in his schoolwork and his writing and not rushing. So, there's a big improvement in all of it.

Unfortunately, she was supposed to take the test the week that she finished, but that got canceled again because of COVID. I’m hoping we see the results of it on the test. She was told that she could continue to go on the website and look at the practice test that she had taken and review things that she missed. In fact, one day last week, my husband had told me that I should call the local facility and see if there were some kind of refresher things that she could do before she takes the test in July. With my last little meeting that we had to see her progress, she's a little over halfway through the fourth-grade level now so she's progressing. She got one or two weeks in August left on when she's paid up.

We just started trying out this week going to the actual facility here in Findlay. Because of the COVID, we were doing the Zoom meetings. I liked it because it was convenient for me but I didn't like it because my daughter had a lot of distractions. Plus, my internet was messing up. I tried to put her in a separate room. But this is her first week there. I'm looking forward to speaking to them and seeing if they made a difference as far as her performance, attention span, and stuff. Hopefully, it's better. There's a lot of communication with Sylvan. They let me know how my daughter's doing with her tutoring, they have been really working with my schedule, and I'm very pleased.

The tutor helped him in going back to the basics rather than always focusing on whatever he's covering in class and circling back to those foundation skills that he was missing. Sylvan is absolutely amazing. To get a teen boy to want to go to tutoring and say, "Mom, why didn't we do this sooner?" was impressive to me. It's been a straightforward and great experience for him. Columbus does not have many centers like Sylvan. So, there was only one option for us to go to, Sylvan. It was for about eight weeks, four hours a day class. My son found it much better to go and do face-to-face learning with them. He’s also using their online app to get some practice. He had a pretty much good experience and discipline to sit for that four hours and do SAT and ECP. He’s not a person who does online learning, so he found going to the center there was much effective for him so that there’s somebody who can actually stay with him, and to see how he’s doing his work, and help him with his questions.

I heard some of the parents give some positive results about SAT exams that their kids did. But, some of them were like, “Okay, we did not have any kind of improvement.” But I still wanted to give it a try, though it’s expensive. Because even if it is different, my son would not fit in online classes, so I thought it might help him to get some discipline of sitting for those four hours. So, for the sake of that, I wanted him to go.

I used a different tutoring system at one time but it was an in-person and it was too far to travel for us to make it work for my daughter. We were trying to find something quick that would work for her and Sylvan seemed to work well. We used it for that short period of time for preparation for her AP Calc exam. It did great for her and it fit. Joanne was very helpful in facilitating it and getting it underway.

We only had about a two-week timeframe to get it started. So, she and I talked about some SAT prep and that seemed to be truthful. I own my own business so it seemed like the preparation getting set up for that was very cumbersome. I don’t need to spend all those times making phone calls, going back and forth then waiting for somebody to be evaluated. That’s too much time on the front-end just to try to get something set up. But on the second-end, I originally talked to Joanne about that and then, we didn’t go that route. I followed back up with her on the AP just as a last chance effort just to try to find somebody for my daughter and she did facilitate it extremely quickly. We were able to get something in place and get started within a day or so. The reason I was able to do it was because it was a quick turnaround and I was able to get it in place and get started quickly on it rather than wasting a lot of time upfront.

So as I sat here and listen to them go over what can do to help my child and we get to pricing it occurred to me, what if I didn't have money to help my child become a better student which in hindsight my child would have a better future, go on to college and have a chance in this world that is constantly changing. My child would be left in the dust, left behind to have a low paying job or even worst getting into things that would land him or her behind bars. They offer financing, but let's be real here, people with low income just don't have good credit. Some don't even have fair credit. I'm blessed that I am able to send my child here, I just don't know what would happened if I wasn't able.

With our rental rates on the rise hard working American people are being priced out their neighborhoods, middle class and lower class are now one, and we don't stand a chance. So after they went over everything with me, first option pay in full which was somewhere in the low $5000, second option was to put half down $2500 today and $499 a month, third option was to have a membership and only pay $1900 today and $499 a month and I asked her, what would happen if I was't financially able to pay for this? She begin tell me that the financing is at 0%....and then I begin to speak for all those families out there and asked what if I have bad credit? Well, after I showed how disgusted and disappointed I was that they didn't offer anything for low income families she then begin to tell me that they do sometimes offer scholarships to kids that are not able to afford this.

Well, this is my problem with that, if that was something that they offered on a regular basis, in my opinion the company would at first, while your child is taking their assessment test they would want to see where you was financially like what is your household income. Instead they up sell you like a cheap car salesman and tell you they have all the bells and whistles. AND for the low cost of your right leg you can have it all. Sick, sick and shameful. I realize you're a business, but don't you think you could do more? You're a company that is in many states and a franchise. You are more than capable of offering something for someone who wants better for their children but is not able to afford the Ferrari but can afford a Ford. We need to do more for our children and stop being so money motivated.

The professionals there have been good, friendly and always on time. Overall, Sylvan is a great opportunity that others should take advantage of, especially if their child needs it.

I had heard really good reviews about Sylvan. My son’s elementary school teacher used to work for them and she had nothing but good things to say. It was at the same exact Sylvan that we’re at right now too. Even though they were slightly on the more expensive end of what we were looking to spend, after talking to them and talking to a couple other tutoring places, their style of tutoring and their philosophy really went more in line with what we were looking for than other places.

I enjoy how much my son enjoys studying at Sylvan. It would be something completely different if I had to drag him to tutoring every single day. And he’s a kid that struggles to make connections with adults as he’s really shy with adults. But he really looks forward to going every day and that makes it totally worth it. He's only been in there for about 2 months now and the biggest thing I’ve seen so far is his confidence. He’s still learning the basic repetitions, so to him, he’s not learning anything, but his confidence has just soared in everything. Before, he wouldn’t pick up a book for enjoyment. And now, he’s bringing home magazines and books just to read in his free time, which is something completely new for him. Other than they could be more affordable, our experience has been great with them.

When I registered for my son for Sylvan's ACT classes, I paid them. He has the test in June and he goes over there every Saturday. After that, they said that my son was not good at English. I paid for English classes for my son and they put the ACT classes on hold. They said the classes are gonna come back in March. After that, my son told me he wanted to take the test in April. I called and talked with someone. I told her to have Tuesdays for ACT classes and Saturdays for English classes. But yesterday, my son came home and told me they didn’t focus on ACT, but on English. English classes are on Saturdays already. Why does my son need the four hours for the English class? Other than that, they treat my son very well and if he goes there, he’s very happy. They have the knowledge and they're improving his knowledge in the time they teach him.

And the location was convenient at that time. My child was having a hard time comprehending the process in Algebra, but her experience was positive. She seemed pleased with her teacher and she brought her grades up to grade levels. I would highly recommend Sylvan.

My children have learning disabilities and are well below their grade level. A friend of mine highly suggested Sylvan Learning Centers because they worked great for her growing up. We interviewed with them and with Kumon. We chose Sylvan because the director was very professional and precise. He explained everything. And he really understood and connected with us and had a genuine feeling of caring to be able to provide my children with assistance.

My children remind me when it's a Sylvan day. They get their shoes on and they're ready to go when it's time. There's no pressure. They love it and all the teachers that they've encountered. The director and people are very personable, friendly, and do everything they can to make sure that they meet every student's needs, and it shows. For the most part, my children have done reading since we began, and they're still doing reading. They have both made progress and although my daughter is a little slower than my son, with her level of disability, it's perfectly okay. At least progress is progress. Over the last two months, they've started their math program. And I have full faith that they'll be able to do something.

I wish more parents of the students or even the students would give more positive feedback. I've seen students come in that are studying for the SATs and I can just see the development throughout all the kids that are there. I love the people. I love the program. I would highly recommend Sylvan Learning Centers to anybody, whether they're learning disabled or just trying to catch up.

    Reviewed Jan. 19, 2020

Sylvan was our last hope. We had used two different tutors, and they were nice teachers, but our son was not improving at all. My mother-in-law is a retired teacher, and she worked for Sylvan many years ago in Massachusetts, and she had said, "You should try Sylvan." So we thought, "Let's try that and see. This'll be our last ditch effort." And it's been amazing. First, we did reading comprehension, which he was horrible in. And then, as he improved, we needed to work on writing. His learning experience through Sylvan has been incredible. He wants to go and he's excited to go.

They have a very precise laid-out plan. It's computerized and they test and see where his gaps are. When he was tested a year ago, he was in fifth grade, and they found gaps back in kindergarten that had never been filled in. It's horrible. He had kindergarten gaps, first grade gaps, second grade, third grade, and fourth grade. He had a long hill to climb. They've got those laptops and they work with him, and they started to just chip away at all the gaps that he had and filled them in. And as he did that, he got stronger in other areas.

With my son, we had been dealing with bullying a lot since second grade. And that's what has really made the learning even more difficult. He had a teacher in second grade that just checked out. She had a lot of emotional issues. We were at a new school, and so I didn't question anything because I didn't wanna be that mom that said, "What's going on?" It was supposedly a wonderful school. I kept checking with the teacher and I told her I didn't believe that my son was doing as well as she was saying. She was saying he was doing great, but he wasn't. She wasn't there. And then, my son was getting bullied on top of it, and then they had to pull him out for special reading intervention. The kids there were telling my kid that he's stupid, so he had super low self-esteem.

It got to the point where my husband and I were like, "Do we get him counseling to help him through this? Or is he feeling awful because he's doing so poorly in school?" He would come home with papers like 39% or 45%. I have three other boys, and they are all in the gifted program, so we were used to like 90 and 100-plus. I was freaking out. What was sad was when he finally got like a 70%. I was happy, and I knew my son was capable of doing so much more. I knew he didn't have a learning disability. But I couldn't figure out how to help him. So I told my husband to try Sylvan first. He said if he still has low self-esteem, then we'll go to a counselor and work on behavioral things.

My son is still unfortunately being bullied because he's at a really hoity-toity elitist school. But he has so much more confidence. He knows he's not stupid. He's putting these kids in their places because they're not doing well in school. And the teachers are always saying how he is the epitome of the kind of student they wanna have in their class. He went from bringing home papers, D's and F's, and then on his report card, he was getting more B's and C's, and this past semester, he got straight A's. That way, I know it's not just Sylvan saying, "Oh yeah, your kid's doing great." Now that he's getting straight A's and he's coming home with 100%, I know Sylvan is working.

I had the tutors that we were going to. They were part of the school he went to, and they were lovely people, but they had no baseline for my son. They really didn't know the gaps and they really didn't have a tried and true method of filling it in. And then they never really followed up, whereas with Sylvan, I go back every month, they retest my son, and they show me exactly what he's accomplished and what's on the horizon.

Rebecca is the director there. She's phenomenal. I, in the beginning, was calling her all the time with questions, and she was always very patient and always available. She's the epitome of the kind of person you wanna have at your company working for you. I just met with Rebecca last week. My son was like a low third grade reading level when he was in fifth grade when he was tested. Now, he's almost at a seventh grade reading level. And she even said, "Shannon, I really have never seen a kid grow this much." I've already sent friends and strangers to Sylvan. I've already told them about it.

I’ve heard the name Sylvan and they’ve been around a good long time. Two of my friends have used them for their children, so I started with them and didn’t look anywhere else. My son has tutoring for reading, language, and grammar, and it’s made a great improvement. He just said this week that he has gained so much confidence, and he really feels like he knows what he’s doing now. And looking at some of the work he did three weeks ago, he said, “Yeah, I was really dumb back then.” So, I said, “Oh. Well, maybe we can prove it now.” He said, “Oh, yeah. I can totally do this.” And he just settled in right off. So, it’s a huge difference. Sylvan targeted what’s really the problem and they do the testing. They can really see where the deficiencies are. The schedule is really good as well. It’s not too much at one time. They targeted improvement and that’s where it really helps.

Prior to Sylvan, I had a couple of other options where one was private tutoring and another one was something similar to Kumon. What sold me on Sylvan was a combination of Jackie, who I spoke with over there, and the seemingly more holistic approach as opposed to one subject. Unfortunately, there was one of the subjects that nobody can help me with. But my kids are in Mandarin, so that’s really tough to find a tutor for.

We’re still midway in tutoring and it’s trying to focus on study skills and things of that nature. I’m not 100% sure and we haven’t been there quite that long to definitely say, “Yes, there’s a difference,” or “no, there’s not a difference.” But there are little differences here and there although not huge, drastic differences. At this point, taking it to a private tutoring would not be something my kids could really do, or if they did, then the cost would go up drastically. With the group tutoring, it’s not that bad even if it’s still a little high in cost. All in all, I can see the potential in the future for going with Sylvan.

So, I had two recommendations. The tutor focused on reading and a little comprehension. She was very patient with my child, and helped build her confidence too. Sylvan is a safe and loving environment for the kids. And even when the kid’s having a bad day, they find ways to work around and still incorporate learning in a different way, other than just sitting at the table or going over things. My child likes the point system where they can collect coins a little too much, and I always have to have a talk with her. "Save your points. We’re not picking anything today."

My son was to take the SAT and needed help in only the math section. He didn’t have enough time to take the full amount of courses before his test date so we bought max that he could fit in before the test. Well of course something came up (a car issue) and my son didn’t know he had to call in advance to let them know, and since he was already cramming all the class times in that he could before the date he couldn’t make it up before the test. There were never fewer than 2 other children in the class so him not being there would not change the fact that the tutor had to be there.

His SAT score only went a few points, but he liked the tutoring and we tried to get him in for the one hour he missed after the test...but they wouldn’t allow him to have it. Which I feel is bad customer service when you’re paying so much money and you paid all upfront and a 17 year old kid had car trouble and didn’t realize he had to call in to cancel. They should have let him join a class to get in that last hour that we paid for. And while I can see how it would help if you were taking it long term...it’s cost prohibitive to take long term for anyone who is living on a modest income.

I went with Sylvan for homework help for my child. The tutor is more knowledgeable about what teachers are looking for. They help the child get past whatever mental block they're having and ask the appropriate types of questions. Then, the kid is the one who does the work and gets through that. Thus far, I think their system works. At Sylvan, there are all these really bright kids, who love to go to school and they also have kids who can’t stand school but need to get it done. Sylvan has to balance that and they do all right.

So far, my child has been with one tutor more than any of the other tutors and hasn’t had any complaints at all. Sylvan has its niche in what it’s needed for. They’ve gone out of their way. They were at the elementary school to help kids who are kind of disadvantaged, who have rough lives, to work with them on learning how to read. That was pretty excellent for that organization to do that. Sylvan's staff are people who are trained to be good, cheerleading and encouraging and getting the children to have an appreciation of learning and themselves. Thus far, Sylvan has worked out great for our situation despite it not being cheap. If raising grades or getting children up to the level they need to be at is a parent's concern or if they are looking for a tutoring option, I would encourage them to go to Sylvan. Going with them has had remarkable results for us.

We used to have a high school student tutor my daughter before we put her in a tutoring class in Sylvan. The biggest advantage with them is the proportion of the teacher-student ratio, which was the biggest thing that we were looking for, so that she gets at least a little bit of personalized attention. Also, it's convenient since it's very close by to our house. She's enrolled in math and writing class, and we wanted her to focus more on writing and get more practice on it. She's been getting different concepts to write and they have been giving her regular feedback on the different punctuation and how more she can explore her creative side. And, we can see that gets reflected in her writing a little bit.

My daughter has been with Sylvan for one year now, and it's been awesome. Judy has been very helpful with us and very cooperative in case if we have to reschedule classes. My daughter is really liking the classes out there. Whenever we go to pick her up, she's always smiling and excited to tell what she's learned and practiced in class that day. Even if it is for two hours, she's happy. So, if your child is smiling after coming home from doing class, then that's mission accomplished.

My daughter has been with Sylvan for a couple of months. But I haven’t seen any update of what I’m paying. I don’t think there is enough information being conveyed between the teacher or any staff person and myself. And it’s usually somebody different depending on the day that she’s there. So, I’m not sure with scheduling and so on and so forth. So, those are kind of a little bit of the things that I have a issue with, especially when you’re paying $49 an hour.

That was another issue I had. I started at one rate at 45, and then the next month, it went to 49 as if I was notified with something. And I don’t know if it was a gray area or I overlooked it. But I want my daughter in the program so I’m paying for it, but I don’t know yet. For the amount of money, I do think that there should be way more conversing. We are getting ready to be at the end of the quarter in school and I haven’t really heard anything.

They never discussed whatever this free time is that they allow the kids to play or do something. I don’t know if it’s like a small break. This is just the kind information that I’m getting when I talk to my daughter about the two hours that she spends there. And it’s not like we are involved in that. Usually, the door is locked. And so, it’s not like we walk in and we can just kinda take a look to just kinda get a peek into just how it operates and how it works. So, those are some of my concerns. But I definitely want what’s best for my daughter. So, I’m at the mercy of the program right now until I find something that is better, or we get to a place where I really feel like it’s working.

I don’t see any drastic changes. I have been kinda encouraging my daughter to take some of her homework in there, which I haven’t had her do before. I’ve just been allowing her to go and do whatever the program is doing. But those will be some little things that I’ve changed now that we’re getting to the end of the school this particular quarter. I don’t have anything negative to say, but I don’t have anything good to say.

We were preparing for the SAT and Sylvan seemed like the best option for us. My son spent time with them and they helped improve tactics. They were flexible with us for accommodating the schedule we were looking for. It seems like my son's experience has gone okay. I'm waiting for the result of the SAT to see whether it did a significant difference or not.

Sylvan was one of the few options we've had in our area other than a Mathnasium of some sort. My son was transitioning from elementary school to middle school and was challenged with workload volume, study habits, and other things. We're working through broad subjects overall, and it's more to get him a little more adept to process changes that he never had or how to use the computer and speak with his teacher, so on and so forth. He struggled in the first quarter as he had 1 or 2 C's. Then, on the second quarter, he was all B's. He seems to be excited or a little more engaged now.

The staff there seem to be fine. We worked really well with Marissa, who is the site leader and so far, so good. Some of the the instructors are fairly young, and that's a pro with the fact that they can relate to the child and understand the process and what they're going through. They may have recently been exposed to it, and they may lack some of the attention to detail in some of the processes they were working on, but we have had the ability to get feedback from my son. He would come in and say, "I don't know that I can work with that teacher or that instructor," and they immediately make a change for the next visit and make sure he gets what he wants or what he needs.

Many families may not afford going with Sylvan but there are available options for the financial aspect, which is great. Still, the ones that really need it are not able to take access or able to take advantage of the program. They ought to have a presentation at the school itself for kids coming out of elementary and going into middle school, and go over the financing options and what the program is. Because when we did an open house, we were thinking, "What's next?" If Sylvan could sit there, answer questions, and hand out cards, then that would be phenomenal.

I have two of my kids in there. My one kid is out already and he is on always honor roll right now. My other kid was struggling. We moved across the country which I think it impacted him, and his grades took a big dive. He got all his grades up now to all As and Bs, and he has one C. So, I’ve seen a big turnaround and both my kids are doing great with huge improvements. The tutor worked on reading and writing. My kids get along with their tutor. At the Sylvan they go to, there’s a reward system where you can earn tokens and you can get a prize at the end of the week and so, they enjoy that. Sylvan is a great option. One should strongly consider it.

Sylvan's staff is so kind and friendly. They are the closest to our area, and they are good to the kids. Prior to using them, we used a school option but they were ineffective. Comparing the two, there is a huge difference. We didn’t see it right away. We saw it after three months of going. My child's test scores, as well as his confidence, improved. He has autism, so when we first tested him and when the school tested him, he was not even at kindergarten level. Now, going two years, he has gone to third grade level. We focused first on English, and now we are focusing on Math. He asked to go there, so that is good. Try it.

We needed help with English - reading and writing. Whatever Sylvan Learning did helped a lot. I also liked that they’re really very nice and professional. They care about the kid they teach. We had an unfortunate experience at Sylvan, we were extremely excited to have our daughter start tutoring at Sylvan after reading about success stories. Our daughter was finishing 4th grade and was testing at a 2nd grade reading level, we decided to meet with the sylvan team to see if they could help our daughter. They told us with confidence that our daughter after finishing the program they had set up for her would be on a beginning 5th grade level. We of course were on board with this because we would do anything for our child to help her succeed. We ended up paying $9,000 for her set program at Sylvan, about halfway through I was voicing my concerns that I haven’t noticed any difference in her reading. I was told many times she was making amazing progress until the sessions were about to end and I had my daughter tested somewhere else to really see where she was at.

I told Sylvan a month before she was finished with them that she had only gotten to a beginning 3rd grade level, the director that I met with said that it was because my daughter was an extremely slow learner. I told her that this is why we are paying a college tuition to get her help they assured us at the beginning they could do. When they failed they put the blame on my daughter, and the director also suggested that my daughter would never get into a college because she isn’t smart enough for it. After already being concerned about my child and her education, I then get told by Sylvan’s director that my daughter has no future was extremely difficult. Sylvan wasted my daughter's time and $9,000 of our already tight income.

Please don’t believe that they can do more than the free Reading Plus program, my daughter has done the reading plus program and has moved up levels faster than she did at Sylvan. Please don’t waste your money on a maybe. If I would’ve known back then what I know now I would have never taken my daughter to Sylvan. The teachers there are really nice but we didn’t want to pay that kind of money for nice teachers and still have a daughter falling behind. I’m not writing this to insult Sylvan, just to make sure no one else has this unfortunate experience.

When we first brought our grandson to Sylvan learning in our community (Temecula) the directors were kind and considerate of our situation. We have temporary custody of our grandson and he need immediate resources. The previous directors accommodate us on a weekly/hourly bases and we paid every week. Our grandson enjoyed going and we saw growth, so this is not about the teachers that actually provide services. Shortly after our grandson was going new ownership unexpectedly came in and took over and started meeting with the parents and not allowing any further communication with the old directors. From that point I felt uncomfortable with the new owners and felt it was all about financial and not the children. However, they informed me they were keeping the same children. They made no reference to changing how we paid, they gave us their hourly schedule and how many hours needed to see improvement.

We signed no new papers since the original start. Our grandson fell ill unexpectedly and missed two appointments. One I called before 10am and reported it, the second we were trying to get him to feel better and go, so I did not call until about 2pm to notify them. A week or two later they told me rudely that I had to make sure to call before 10AM. I accepted that and agreed, because I understand the impact to the teachers. Then another week later they told me that I had to pay monthly, with no warning. I told them they needed to speak to my husband. They told my husband the same thing, and then they claimed he unenrolled him from the school. My husband told me that he was told to call to confirm if my grandson would be attending on his scheduled day.

When I called to tell them he would be there should told me he unenrolled him, which my husband would have communicated to me. She also told me I had to pay monthly now, which as I stated had never been disclosed. She tried to tell me that I paid monthly the month before, when I know I did not and have proof. These actions by the Director reflect to me that it is not about the child and their learning, it is about the financial gain of the facility and there is no care for the children or families in the community. I am very disappointed, because my grandson enjoyed going and we saw growth. However, this new ownership is less than to be desired and rude.

Updated on 08/20/2019: No way to respond to reply of Sylvan, so let me just finish by saying that all the "sudden" closures over numerous years doesn't speak to your reputation as a company and the vetting you do of potential franchisees. Sylvan can't possibly expect people to believe that it receives none of the monies generated by its franchise, especially since there is a quality control factor. Be an upstanding business and give the people their money back.

Original review: While I had no problem with the tutors, the franchisee and the parent company are running disreputable businesses. The center with which I was involved closed suddenly, leaving over 50 families with no services and no refunds. Customers were out thousands of dollars. The franchisees (a co-owned franchise) refused to assist families with refunds, stating they were helpless because they had filed bankruptcy. The parent company, Sylvan Corporate, refused responsibility and compensation. We were offered the opportunity to attend another center, which was not an option for many of us who were already traveling extensive periods of time to get to the now- closed center. Personally, I would have to be on the road for approximately 3 hours, 15 minutes, twice a week.

Confronted with this information, Sylvan Learning Centers still refused any assistance, leaving me in debt to my lender for over $6,100. Other families had paid cash upfront, and have nowhere to turn. This has been a common practice with franchises all over the country for many years. I would NOT recommend this company as the risks of losing your investment in your child's education are too great.

Hi Karla - Sylvan Corporate is also disappointed about the sudden closure of the Colorado Springs Sylvan Learning Center by its franchise owners. Sylvan was not made aware of the closure in advance and was just as surprised as the families in the area when it closed. We have done our best to try to find local trained former staff members to offer make-up services, though this has not been successful as of yet. We have also offered make-up services at the Lone Tree location to customers who paid in advance for services that they did not receive prior to the Center’s closing. However, the franchise owners, rather than Sylvan Corporate, collected the payments from parents and it is their sole responsibility to provide refunds to settle the customer accounts. While Sylvan Corporate can offer services, we are unable to provide refunds because Sylvan Corporate did not receive the money from the families.

Unfortunately we didn't give notice by the 15th (which was a week before we started) and they took an entire month of our upfront payment which was ~$1000. Huge mistake on our part for thinking the owners (out of the Overland Park, KS office) would give us some grace and refund us 2 months back. My child’s learning experience was wonderful since we got a tutor from them and she was always happy when she left. She has enjoyed it and she’s like, “I had a great session”. She’s still going and will finish up the end of June. Then, we’re gonna give her a little summer break.

Michael, a doctor, works there and he’s so personal with every single child that walks in that door. He has a special handshake for all of them and he gets to know them at an in-depth personal level. When I was waiting to have a meeting with him to go over my child’s scores and stuff, I saw him interact with other children. He is an asset to Sylvan. There’s a tutoring center at the college where I go at Tacoma Community College. But the tutoring that I received at Sylvan was much more thorough. At the college, they were helping me with a particular assignment. But because the school is limited, they’re really only able to help you with a particular assignment. With Sylvan, the tutoring that I received would actually benefit every area of writing. They helped me understand grammar, the pre-writing process, what goes into your introductory paragraph and how to relate the body paragraph to your thesis. So all of that was actually helping me for the next assignment. I would be able to use that.

My tutor also encouraged me to journal on a regular basis and just going and listening to what she had to say actually got me into the writing habit. I can definitely see changes. In fact, if I’m given a prompt, it’s easier for me to get started now. Being given a writing assignment is not as intimidating as it was before. So I received help in getting that writing process started. The tutor also made me feel very comfortable. As an older person, I was a little iffy about going in among so many younger students but she didn’t make me feel like I was lacking something. She didn’t point out whatever my deficiencies were in a derogatory way. She just let me know that we're all always learning and so she helped create an environment where I was able to learn.

Pretty much I brought my child to Sylvan Learning Center to help increase both Math and reading comprehension skills. Before my child started I was promised a few things and unfortunately they never happened. 1; I was told they would reach out to my child school and teacher, so that they would be on the same page as far as helping my child. This never happened. In fact my child teacher didn't even know she attended Sylvan, until myself and my child told her. Once I found this out I reached out to the head manager at my child's location. The lady apologized unsympathetically and said she will reach out personally and asked for my child's teacher info again and still no one reached out to the teacher. What a joke.

2; I was told I would get constant updates regarding my child progress. That also never happened. 3; I was told they would prepare my child for the next school year/grade level but instead they constantly gave my child work from lower grade levels that my kid knew. None of the practice work given was my child grade level or up so my child was bored. Which I also brought to their attention and the response was "your child can bring in their school work, if that helps". SMH. At that point I was very upset after all what am I paying you for if I have to constantly tell you what to do and bring in work of my own. But I still had hope for Sylvan. Until they provided my daughter with a math tutor that did not understand my child work which my child was told specifically to bring in so they could assist her.

Also I know they cannot control other individuals children but one day I witness a child be absolutely disrespectful not only to the staff but the other children working. He was yelling and constantly distracting everyone. And the staff just let it happen. They said "oh we'll just let his dad knows when he picks him up." That right there showed me their only motive is getting paid and nothing more. Overall my experience was a joke. A complete waste of time. Multiple promises are given. Dreams are sold to you in order to scam you out of your hard earned money. Maybe my issue isn't with Sylvan as a whole but it most certainly is with the location my child attended. It's unfortunate my first impression of what I thought was a excellent company indeed turned out to be the opposite. First impressions are lasting ones.

I used to have a tutoring program and I didn't want them for my daughter when she needed one. One of my daughter's guidance counselors used Sylvan and she was pleased. Their reviews also made me go with them. We got them for my daughter's math, English, and the SAT test, and we loved the tutor. My daughter really connected with her tutor who was very approachable, easy-going, and phenomenal. We had a great experience. My daughter took the PSAT before we used Sylvan and she will be retaking it in August so we're gonna reconnect with Sylvan again in June. They really helped her as far as standardized tests in general. So if you're considering them, then definitely use them.

I did a Google search for math tutors because there are a lot of small colleges around this area of Burlington, Vermont. I thought there would be somebody out there who needed some extra cash, like a college student, to help my daughter with her Math and it would be easy. My daughter is 15 and I wanna know who she is associated with. When I started finding people, they were not caring so much about Math but just on making a few extra dollars. That was fine but that was not what I was looking to help my daughter improve her Math scores. I tried Sylvan and it seemed to be a good fit.

My daughter scored really high on her initial exam but she doesn’t have any confidence. Even though she could figure things out, she couldn’t take the tests in the time allotted. She would usually run over which made her embarrassed because the next kids would be coming and she would still be taking the test from the previous period. The purpose of the tutoring was to build confidence in the subject and to make her comfortable in her ability.

My daughter loves her experience with Sylvan. She actually got mad when we had to cut back to one day a week. She said she wanted to go back to two. But because she plays two sports, it got really hard. If people ask, I'd tell them why we paid Sylvan. I wasn’t sure at first, but they are helping my daughter with her grade and that’s results right there.

Sylvan Learning Centers was the closest tutoring option to my home so we went with them. The subject areas that the tutors have been focusing on were study skills and math. The tutee's confidence and his math grade have improved, and his test anxiety has become lower. Everything has been great with the tutors and they’ve been very informative. They’ve had a meeting with the tutee's math teacher at his school, along with myself, so we’re all on the same page and that has been really good. Our experience with Sylvan Learning Centers has been great and I would definitely recommend them.

Our son’s problem was with details and they really focused in on the details for both math and reading. He is doing fine so far and he has been going to Sylvan for two years. He drives himself to the place and brings home a report of what he did for the day. We also meet with the director once a month. It has been a fantastic learning experience from Sylvan and I would highly recommend them. Our son is much more confident in both reading and math and his grades have improved significantly.

Although she would like to go every day, I couldn’t afford that, so she goes twice a week. Sylvan focuses on Math and reading. My child’s scores are going up a lot on her testing but a lot of that has to do with her self-esteem and the Sylvan tutors have done wonders with her in two months. I love them. My child has improved quite a lot. They were expecting him to learn one new skill per visit, but at his 30-visit assessment, he had learned 53. He is also doing much better in his reading classes at school. Though he is still shy there, they are working to help build his confidence. I can't talk good enough about Sylvan. It is absolutely wonderful. My child enjoys going there and is excited to go every day, and it has been such a great thing for him. The staff at Sylvan is amazing. The tutor focused on writing with my kids, and their confidence improved. My son's writing stamina definitely increased, and he was always excited to be at Sylvan because they made the program fun and engaging. The teachers are actual teachers, and they personalize the program for the individual's needs. They initially did an assessment, so we knew exactly what he needed to work on and then, that's exactly what was focused on. They are also able to make additional adjustments, if necessary, even minute-by-minute changes. Going with Sylvan was a wonderful decision and I'd do it again.

My child is in first grade and she got 50% on her math test so I got her a tutor from Sylvan. In fact, they have helped her with her spelling homework before, but she is above grade level in reading. She does fabulous when she gets to guess with the word in English. She's a fill-in-the-blank and goes really fast. She can do and answer any recall questions you want from third-grade books. She only needs assistance with math and she has been in the program for two months. So far, she only missed three problems on her last math test.

The tutors are working with her to teach her to slow down. They are also showing her how to cover her paper so she doesn't see other numbers and get distracted. She moves too fast so when you have to be correct with math, she struggles. There is only one right answer in math and that she has to go slow and careful which is not her style. My child likes getting one-on-one attention and she likes going to math lessons. She's a very self-confident person. Overall, Sylvan's programs are very thorough and very good. They are great with her.

I heard about Sylvan Learning through a family member and online and my elder daughter went there briefly before. I had experience with Sylvan and C2 and I chose Sylvan because they were more in terms of the methods of payment. When I went to C2, it cost me more because I had to do all the amount upfront. On the other hand, Sylvan gave me a plan and in terms of payment, it was more flexible there. Moreover, I like the atmosphere and they are very professional. Sylvan is focusing on Language Arts and basic English which was where my child was having issues. Thus far, I've seen vast improvement so far in her schoolwork.

When I went there initially, her grades were terrible. She was getting 60s and 70s, but now, she is in the 80s going above, so the one-on-one focus has been doing her well. Our area of focus was mainly the English language, but she does a little math, too. She has been at Sylvan since February and she loves the environment there. She is happy, so I am happy, too.

I am very happy with Sylvan Learning. They have done amazing work with my daughter. They could say one sentence and my daughter would get it right away. Plus, she gets one-on-one attention. When we went through the teacher in school, they talked too fast and were too hyper. They were dealing with too many kids and couldn't focus as Sylvan can. Kenny, our favorite tutor, is outstanding. I've seen my daughter when she's around other kids and how she acts. She's all chatty and talky, but Kenny has a lot of patience, which is a big thing.

My daughter is getting tutoring in pre-Algebra and she is doing fractions as well. Since using Sylvan, she has felt better and her grades went up. Although it's not an A-plus, when she attacks the subject, she has a lot more confidence at doing stuff. She doesn't fear raising her hand in school and she feels okay with helping out other kids. When a kid is absent, she would voluntarily help, which she has never done before. I've spent a lot of money on Sylvan and their prices are a little high, especially when you wanna use them all the time. Their prices are fine if you just need help once here and there, but their prices should be a lot lower for people that use them regularly.

Sylvan Learning helped Carolina with reading. I saw a huge progress with that because my kids are difficult to teach. There was another lady and she's amazing. She's been helping my other daughter with time management, study habits, and confidence. She's doing incredible work with her. I also hired her to help me organize my finances, and I talked it all out with her, and she does a beautiful job.

Sylvan is expensive, but I'm getting my money's worth. I've spent $1,000 on Christina. And if she hadn't gotten a concussion, we'd be perfectly fine. She'd be golden. She has learning skills that I can't teach her because I don't have that bent in my head. I'm not capable of doing that kind of organization. So the lady has been teaching her some incredible skills. I'm going back to the tutor that I had before who was working with Carolina. And just generally because that first tutor had so much more success, so I'm gonna go ahead and beg her to take us back. Being with Sylvan, you have to have the money, but it's well worth to put the investment in the kids. I would tell others to do it. But I would tell them to be careful with the subjects, depending on their kid and how they learn.

One of the first things that caught my information was the Groupon as I was scrolling through, looking for other things, and Sylvan Learning kept coming up in the feed, “Tutoring Sylvan, discount. You can get an evaluation with four sessions at a discounted rate.” And when my child was struggling in math, I remembered seeing the Groupon. So I went back in, and it was still available. Before I purchased it, it made me wanna do a bit of research. I was living in Castro Valley, California at the time, and I wanted to know what type of tutoring services were available in my sort of immediate vicinity. My husband went by a Kumon, and he didn't know how he felt about it. So, I went and was highly disappointed and turned off by their method. My child was too far behind according to their assessment. At that very moment, we had a specific type of need, and they cannot meet that need.

So then, I went to Sylvan, sat down with them to get an idea what their method was, and how they could be of help possibly to our family. I like knowing that not only could my student get help with their homework, but if they knew that they had a test or a quiz coming up, that they could get specific help addressing the topics that would be covered on that upcoming exam. And if there was no homework or there was no upcoming exam, that Sylvan would be able to still provide their own materials to build up the areas needing improvement of my child's personal development. Even the initial assessment that identifies areas of weakness was great for me. I saw a significant improvement in the math grade and my student had more confidence and performed better in the math class. We were all happy campers.

There was a gap in having Sylvan's services as we ended up moving. I live in a different city now, and we found the San Ramon, California, Sylvan. I have both of my students in it now as they both struggle in math. We started at the end of November, and so far, so good. At the Castro Valley location, I felt like the teachers and the tutors were solid. They seemed knowledgeable, effective, capable and able to show my student, what they needed to know to be successful, and it was always accurate and spot-on. That has been the case here in San Ramon as well. They are knowledgeable individuals that had been able to successfully help my students.

I ask both my students all the time what do they have today, and we drive into tutoring. And they would answer that they have a test coming up and that they don't always feel prepared for it. And when we leave tutoring, I would ask them if they feel that their tutoring helped them. They would answer, "Oh, absolutely. I didn't know how to do this one problem, and they totally broke it down. Super easy, and I know I could do it on my own now." We leave the house going to tutoring with questions and concerns, and when every time we come back from tutoring, they have way more confidence. And so, I have been impressed and pleased with how knowledgeable every tutor has been that they've worked with. The tutors were friendly in Castro Valley, and they're friendly, polite and kind here in San Ramon. I have friends who started going to Sylvan because I told them about my experience and that they should send their student as well.

I would recommend Sylvan. My children are doing Math and reading with their tutor right now. They're helping them to be able to decipher word problems or reading to understand. They're teaching them different skills to help them. We were using Kumon and Sylvan is much better. Sylvan is more hands-on, has smaller groups, and is focused on areas that needs improvement. And I felt like Kumon was more repetitive which was a tool that didn’t really teach them skills. We’d seen a nice result from Sylvan.

We have three children in Sylvan. It’s important to make sure that we have a plan that’s very separate, doesn’t cross over to each child, to be specific to the child, and one child doesn’t take away from another child. We’re going through that right now. They’re working through with the director of the school to make sure our children are probably gonna take about a year to complete the program, and we’re coming up in six months. And now, they’re telling us that the money has been used, and I’m like, “How is that possible when we planned this thing to be, probably, a 12-month window?” Also, the testing results are not where they need to be. Still overall, I have been happy with the process.

Our child was not so good with math. Two of my co-workers told me that they had good experience with Sylvan Learning Centers so I went there. However, when the rep started looking at my son's test, the answers were right, but they were not right for the question they were asking. If they'd ask, “A dog is five years old and a cat is three years old, who’s older?” My son would say, “The cat is younger.” So, he understood the concept, he was just not answering properly. The goal was to start looking into his reading comprehension and the tutor was amazing. Even my son noticed the difference of having a tutor. When we brought my son in, he was having some C’s and even if the tutoring was three weeks, he was able to finish on AB honor roll, and even the B’s were just shy from an A.

Sylvan Learning was amazing. We’re Coast Guard so even by now, the tutors have always been checking with us. It's a family-type of approach and it’s more a friendly business. They have been a great support. I'd tell others that Sylvan Learning is good for them. Especially being in Louisiana, we’re always concern of how much far behind the kids are going to be when we transfer. The extra help my son is getting would help him if from here we go to New Jersey. He would not be behind. He would just be at par. They’re picking him up from where the state requirement lacks.

Math is kind of a harder one, but he does have a little bit better attitude in class and at home about doing Math homework.

My daughter only needed 10 more points to be considered for half scholarship for her first-choice college. I googled, Sylvan popped up and it was the only resource in the area that seemed reputable as far as SAT tutoring. Those tutors were amazing. The way they analyze the pre-SAT scores, and the post, and they kept up with my daughter's tutoring appointments and followed up. It was well worth the money. Sylvan also told me and sent me news articles about the SAT being curved, making it really difficult for students. I'm a part-time professor and I thought I knew everything, but Sylvan educated me. That group is a great bunch.

Sylvan helped the children more. The tutor started my son off with a one-on-one session, the way she said she was gonna do before putting him in a group session. My son is doing a lot better. He's reading more and he's doing better on his testing at school. He's enjoying it. He looks forward to going every day. So go to Sylvan. They're the best. I have tried several private tutors for my daughter starting in second grade. I found that coming to my house once or twice a week wasn't working, with the exception of one out of five tutors. I decided to take a different approach and went to Sylvan Learning. Sylvan has a program, as opposed to a tutor that comes to my house. They look at what is being done in school, and then tutors on that for one or two hours a week. For Math, Sylvan assessed my daughter’s deficiencies, so they have a way to figure out what core skills she's missing. They have a program where they target those gaps that she had. Tutors don't do that. Tutors just come in, go over the homework and they talk about it but they’re not retesting them to see if they're gaining proficiency in it.

I like that Sylvan is assessing their progress along the way through testing. They've been flexible if there are times when she has a topic in class that they're going over that she needs extra help with and they'll do that instead of their program. They're doing a little bit of past skills catch-up along with current skills. Lisa, the center director, is extremely knowledgeable about what the curricula is at our local school. She knows what they're teaching, when they're teaching it and how they teach it. I have found that to be helpful. My child is doing much better in her class grades and I have recommended it.

However, she struggled a little bit with math, like Algebra 1 and 2 and the SAT goes beyond that. But she got through it all and blew it out of the water when they gave it to a lesson. I would recommend Sylvan Learning Centers. They were very polite, easy to get along with and willing to work with us.

He’s understanding phonics. He’s understanding what is going on, not just looking at words with letters in it and making up all kinds of words that would fit in with those letters. He is also understanding how to break them down and how to use them. It makes sense to him now. Since having a tutor from Sylvan, he sits down and reads some of the books that he used to struggle with just really quickly. It’s expensive, but you see results. Give it a chance.

Our son has a tutor that comes to the house. He is an older high school student that basically helps him with his homework, but it is not a professional service. We wanted to get him a professional assessment in terms of possible learning disabilities and to really get a sense where he’s at academically and what he needs in terms of the extra support that he’s not getting one on one at school. Thus, we went with Sylvan Learning and he has been there for a few weeks. They are currently focusing on reading comprehension.

Our son is really happy going to Sylvan Learning. He is getting the kind of support that he is too afraid to ask for at school and he has responded positively to it. Both the tutors and the head of the program have been really good about following through even to the point where they make sure my son emails them to make sure he got home okay because he travels on his own. They are also really quick with follow-ups with us, with both parents. I would recommend Sylvan Learning.

Then the other options were like group lessons and my girls didn’t wanna do that. My daughter has been going to Sylvan since July and she’s gotten 3's and 4's on the report card that just came out. So it’s what she needed to keep her up to date. Then my other daughter was a little lower too and we just joined her. We haven’t seen much improvement with her yet but they both enjoy going. It gets a little crowded at times but I don’t think Sylvan can do anything about that. I recommend them too. It’s good for the extra practice. I like that every 24 hours, Sylvan re-tests the girls. So I get to see where they’re at.

I'm from the United States, but I married a woman in Angola, Africa. We just moved to the United States with her daughter and her two nieces, and they are all teenagers. One only spoke about 10 words of English, while the other two were a little better but certainly not fluent. We brought them to the US on a foreign exchange student program. They are going to Pope John Paul II High School and we knew that they needed help, so they went to Sylvan Learning before the school year started for about four weeks, four or five hours a day, five days a week.

When school started, they were going to Sylvan for two hours per day until the first semester was finished until they got their first report cards. Two of them had 3.0-grade point averages, then one had better than that, and I knew it was because of Sylvan. They all went during the second semester for one hour per day and only four days a week, instead of the previous five. Sylvan normally doesn't help as a second language, but they did a great job.

My stepdaughter, who is now 35 years old, also went to Sylvan about 20 years ago and they were helpful. When the girls came, we had to do something and we had to get them better in English before school started. Our latest contract with Sylvan is finished, but I'm leaving the option open to go back if needed for more tutoring. I just spoke to the director, Adam, and the senior director, Sal, and they are aware that if it comes to exam time and the girls feel like they need help, we will definitely go back. It was a great experience and I've told that to many local Sylvan people. They were extremely helpful and I am extremely grateful. I definitely will recommend Sylvan.

We were taking our son to a different school for reading but Sylvan was amazing and changed the trajectory of our son's ability to learn. Sylvan tested our son and found where he was weak. They started back at the basic. He's only eight years old and they found where he missed the step in learning and then recreated that or built on that foundation. He has been taking steps as he mastered each section to move up. They also did a combination of paperwork and computer time but his focus was on reading.

Our son has been in the program for three months now and sees a tutor twice a week. He is more willing to learn. When we drive around, he is looking for signs with words on them and reading them to me. It has been fantastic. When we went to Sylvan, he was reading at a 0.9 grade level which is the ninth month of kindergarten to the end of it. He is in second grade. After his first five sessions, he was reading at a 1.4 grade level.

It has been a gift. Where we were before, they were putting him in an extended resource room with kids with behavioral issues which he doesn't have. He was just having a hard time reading. He wasn't growing any and he wasn't developing those skills. So, we were shocked after such a short time at Sylvan how much he has progressed. Also, the environment at Sylvan is wonderful. They reward you with a point system and you buy stuff from their little store. Our son is encouraged to go there. It's a quiet and very professional environment. We're blown away with how fast and how excited he is to look for letters now and make words. It has been life-changing for us and for his confidence at school. We've already recommended Sylvan and there's another little boy in our son's class who is now attending because of our experience.

We used a different tutoring option when we lived elsewhere in the state, about three hours away. We moved to another place and Sylvan was really close to where we lived. We tried it out and we’ve been there ever since 2012. It has been amazing and Ms. Valerie has been incredible. Besides the owner, she’s the main person that we usually speak with and see. She always goes the extra mile and cares about the kids. She’s also funny and my kids respect her. They know that they can push her a little and she’ll be fun, but then she means business when there is work.

Gail, the owner, even went to my son’s intermediate school when he has in 6th or 7th grade. She did a parent-teacher conference. We had all of the teachers for my son, Josh, in the same room. Gail came and she explained what they do at Sylvan for Josh. It was great to have her there so that she could hear the issues that Josh was having with each class and the teachers. That really helped so that Sylvan could cater his tutoring specifically to what he needed. Sylvan really works with the kids. There are times when my kids don’t wanna go to tutoring but once they go and they’re done, they feel a lot better because their homework’s done or they’re ready for a test.

I’ve seen how finely tuned into detail Sylvan Learning was, how much they kept up with the teachers, and how much they would email the teachers about the correct curriculum in order for them to make their actual program effective for our children individually, and these made me chose them over its competitors. They speak to the teachers, get to know what the kids are learning and where they’re struggling. They have contact with myself, the teacher, and everybody works together in order to get the child in the right place.

We have been with Sylvan program for nine months and I started seeing results after two months. They were very effective. Their strategies grant some result and that’s most important to me. They were focusing on my daughter's math and flash reading, and I’m seeing major improvements in classwork. I also see confidence in homework. I'm very happy for her. When I was going to college in Arizona, I had an experience with Sylvan so I knew that the methods that they used were very straightforward and easy to understand compared to how other teachers might teach. I sought them out from my own experience. I knew that we still would have a gap with the time we had with the other tutor from school so I wanted to supplement the times my oldest child would have in the gym through tutoring.

The staff there in Sylvan is great. I normally talk to Eddie on the phone and he is great. Our daughters like the tutors named Derek and Jessica. But again, they’ve got different personalities and approaches. If our kid doesn’t really care for one tutor’s approach over another, it’s not the tutor’s not teaching them well, it’s just the style that they prefer. And I like the fact that I can get my kids scheduled with the one they prefer. I got two daughters in Sylvan right now. My oldest is 15 and a 1st year in high school. My youngest is a little behind in her math skills and was struggling a little bit. We did the assessment with her to see what gap she has and we’re working on closing that gap. That was one of the things that we like about Sylvan. Also, I like that my daughter got to see the style of a couple different tutors and she found one that she really enjoys. When we schedule, the scheduling’s flexible so that we can get Derek for my oldest.

There are different motivators for each of my children. The oldest like to understand the concept. Even though she was getting an A in geometry, she still felt like she wasn’t understanding the concept. She’d bring them forward to the next type of math that she might experience so it was concepts then. The oldest is appreciative of the tutor who is very direct and helps her understand the concept. The little one is excited because she gets little rewards for doing her tutoring and earns points. Her motivator’s a little bit different, but she enjoys going, too. They’re both very engaged and that has a lot to do with their approach.

To use Sylvan, there’s a cost to it and parents might be apprehensive sometimes because they feel they are gonna make them pay so much a month. But Sylvan does cater to the issue we're trying to solve then work with us as far as what they would recommend. But we have to work it within our budget. They’re respectful of the balance of helping the child and also understanding what we can do financially.

I’ve been with Sylvan Learning for four months and I still can’t get reviews back saying what Faith, my daughter, is working on or what she has mastered or what they are even learning. Sometimes, there are about three kids to one teacher or two kids to one teacher and my daughter gets distracted really quickly. I still wanted the one-on-one with my daughter and it worked during the times that I got them for my daughter.

Right now, they are doing Reading at Sylvan. I would ask my daughter what they did and she would say, “I don’t know.” Sometimes, she would tell me that she was working on the short vowel for the “O,” so I would try to help her at home with little things like that as well. At the beginning, we spoke at Sylvan about what my daughter was lacking, what she was doing, what her strengths were, and what her fallback was, so we were all in the same page. However, when I went there, I saw them sit her with an iPad, and that was it.

I told them that I can do that at home and I was paying them money to give her the skill, so they should help her with that skill. I saw her on the iPad for the first 30 minutes, and she was there only for 45 minutes or an hour. I felt like, “Why are we putting her on there? Why are we having another program that I can download at home and it’s gonna cost me nothing, but yet for the first 30 minutes, you put her on there?” I saw my daughter looking around and not paying attention. I thought to myself that it was not going the way I wanted to. I am not seeing a difference.

I had invited Sylvan to go to a school meeting with all her specialists, the principal, vice principal, teacher, and everybody that is involved in helping her work together. My daughter's reading specialist asked the coordinator at Sylvan what Faith is working on at Sylvan. The coordinator did not know how to answer them and I had to answer for her. I said, “Well, they’re doing fundamentals. They’re going back to kindergarten, the sound, the short, the long vowels and everything.” I started throwing stuff at the specialist because that’s what the teacher had told me and that’s what my daughter was working on with the reading specialist. I also said, “Well, I’m assuming this is what we had spoken about and this is the goal that we were gonna do within a year, the whole school year,”

I’ve seen the reviews and the people who have talked about Sylvan said that I would start seeing the difference right away. My daughter loves going there and she would not miss a day. When I miss a day, she makes me stay there and she wants to stay for two hours. She knows she’s gonna stay for another session. She loves getting rewards and she loves earning points. She does all the extra things, so she can earn points. The people are super nice there at Sylvan, although I see that they use more electronic stuff to get through a child. I would say no and I would tell them that my daughter is used to the one-on-one. I’m trying to leave her out of there, so are the specialists, to where I give her her independence. However, I am not paying like other parents that are paying four hours a week and can afford all of that because I can’t.

I have my daughter on phonics books on the iPad because apparently, that is the grade level that she is reading, so I am going back and showing her the fundamentals at home. I and her teachers are always pushing her, but she never loses her cool. She is always 100% in it. No matter how hard it gets for her, she’s always trying. She’s always a go-getter, as what all the teachers tell me. However, I don’t get anything back from Sylvan. I just drop off my daughter and I wait outside. I would look and see what she was doing. All she does is just sit and the teacher literally points at each child on what to do then waits. She sits back and my daughter is on the iPad with her headsets for 30 minutes. The most I’ve counted was 35 minutes of the session. My daughter is looking around and she is not even looking at the iPad, while the teacher or the instructor is not even paying attention.
