I love Sylvan. They were the best. I used a different tutoring service before but it didn't fit my needs. Sylvan was excellent and they worked as a whole team. The tutor focused on my grandson’s reading, vocabulary and phonics. I would definitely recommend them.

A friend referred me to Sylvan Learning and the tutors are focusing on reading and math with my foster child. She previously did not wanna go, but now, she enjoys going. She has a couple of different tutors and things are going well. She likes them, and she likes certain ones better than the others. Also, the staff are very good and they always get back to me right away. There have been a couple of issues here and there where we had some bad homework and homework that wasn’t done. But they called me right away, adjusted it and made up for it. My child has only been in there for two months, but so far, I’m happy and pleased. I have noticed a change in my child's attitude and it is helping her build confidence. I would recommend Sylvan.

Sylvan Learning is the best. They're doing very well for my kids who have improved in English and Math. They're very polite and kind, and they make it easy for my kids in school. Now my kids are understanding most things.

Going with Sylvan was convenient for us and they had the hours that we needed initially. They are helping my child with reading right now and his tutor has been good. We haven't had to retest my son again and his school seems to think he's doing better. And he likes Sylvan. We haven't seen any grades to measure any change brought by the tutoring but it seems to be helping. We've also been really happy with Sylvan's flexibility and scheduling. And the teachers there seem to be nice.

Sylvan was recommended by our friends, and we are on the second year that we are using Sylvan for our son. And he's doing very good at school. He's focusing on Math and English and his tutor has been able to help him very well. Most importantly, he likes to go there and he's happy. The school is not enough by itself, and my son had a lot of improvements since going with Sylvan. He covered the requirements from the school because English is a second language for me and his mom, and at home we speak a different language and he needs more improvement. Everything with Sylvan is perfect.

My son was tested on November 17, 2018 to get help with study skills/ tutoring for Geometry & Chemistry. I was told that he needed to test first... Have yet to hear back from them regarding results. This is not a good sign as far as I'm concerned and now I don't feel confident about their habits and ability to follow through. I have called a couple of times and was told that someone would call me back but to no avail. Unacceptable, how are they going to teach him study skills and they can't even follow through??? - Very Disappointed.
Hi Erica - We are so sorry that the center has not followed up with you in regards to your son's results yet! We'd like to follow up with them on your behalf, so we've sent you a message to collect a few more details. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience!

I was looking into Reading classes for my daughter and I went with Sylvan Learning. They keep the same curriculum but it was not always the same tutor. Since using their services, my daughter has improved big time to the point that she is already at her learning level. We just kept going to see them to keep the learning experience. I would highly recommend Sylvan. We got results, and when I had a concern, they helped me go through it. I always consider Sylvan Learning as a possibility in case I need it too.

I used Sylvan when I was little, and I had success with them. My daughter needed help on English and Math, so I made a phone call to Sylvan and they were great. They came in the same day and they tested her. We’ve been going over the program for a month and a half now, and my daughter is gradually moving up. Sylvan is doing a great job. I can’t be thankful enough for them. They are great and I tell everybody about Sylvan.

I went to Sylvan for SAT preparation. They told us we needed 2 books $25 each. I start my prep course and the location owner was over enthusiastic about what she thinks I can get. She said I can get 200+ easy. There were times where I was sitting there waiting for them to pay attention to me. I asked for help and they didn't give it to me. I asked how to do a certain math problem and it took not 1 but 2 "tutors" to attempt it. They never came to a conclusion. I had to ask for help with strategy and they didn't give me any. I spent one day with 1 one tutor trying to help me, an 8th grader, and a 2nd grader all at once.
I took a practice test through Khan Academy and got a score 40 points lower than what I got on my first test. I told the location manager that I needed to redirect our time. She then told me that they were wrong. The College Board (they created the SAT) suggests the help of Khan Academy and they were apparently wrong. I then asked for a Sylvan version and she never sent it to me. I asked again the next week and when I brought it back she said my score went up 90 points. I was falsely confident. There were many occasions when I asked for additional days before the exam and they just didn't respond to my emails. My father emailed them confirming tutoring days and it took 3 tries to get someone to email us back.
Finally the test day arrived and I felt so confident, but this is short lived as I received my score and my score went down 10 points. We focused on the English section and it went down. My math score stayed the same. I will have one more chance to take the sat before my applications are due. I am not returning to Sylvan. This is a waste of time, money, and effort. I worked for an hour on SAT prep everyday and I got worse. Avoid Sylvan.
Hi Meredith - Thank you for your feedback about your experience with our SAT prep program. We are so sorry that you did not have a better prep experience with us! At Sylvan, we strive to help each of our student's meet his or her individual goals, and we apologize that we did not meet yours. We got into Sylvan when we needed homework help for my child. I prefer Sylvan than the other place I looked at because it was more affordable, and it was not intimidating. It was very easy to enroll with Sylvan. They were really responsive and everything was great. My son's main struggle was there was a lot of writing assigned this year. He doesn't like the subject and the assignment. Instead of me having to try to fight with my kid to get the work done, being in Sylvan's program and that environment, he had no choice but to get started.

I heard good things about Sylvan Learning Centers. Plus, a very close friend of ours works there, so I got my son a tutor there. He is in 5th grade and he’s been having problems in science and math. Assessment was done and they focused on strengths and weaknesses. And when he had problems in his homework area, they were able to have him bring his homework in. They looked at what he was having issues with and went over that with him. He likes going there and he finds it to be very helpful. If he’s having issues in a different subject, like if something comes up in another subject, he likes that they will change the focus for whatever he needs.
I’d also like to give credit to Aynsley because she’s been very helpful in working with our very busy schedule. She’s at the Rochester Sylvan at Rochester, Minnesota. Overall, Sylvan is awesome and their service is worth the money. They're also very flexible and they have programs to fit everyone’s needs. Working with them has been really good for my child. He has been learning with them and his teachers in school have seen him be more willing to ask questions and willing to ask for help now, which he didn't do before. So, that’s good.

My daughter's fiance and his brother went to Sylvan for a few years when they were younger and they liked it. So, I decided to try their service for my child. They're helping him with reading and his tutor has been good. He's getting there and I have seen a little bit of improvement so far. His tutor is trying to work with him on remembering as he's having a hard time remembering words. He could tell a word then the next time he'd see that same word, he wouldn't know it. So, that's what we're working on. My son hit it off with his teacher at Sylvan and he really enjoys going there.

My son is in high school now and I wanted to make sure he got the most out of whatever it was he was doing. I took a chance with Sylvan to help him with that and the price of their tutoring service is pricey for someone that's on a fixed income. I'm a single mom, too, but I had to do something and I wanted my children to make better grades. Also, I'm 67 years old and I don't want to leave my son back here without having some background. Right now, they're helping him with English and Math, and his grades have improved so far. Being that he's 15, I've tried to let him deal with them, though I would check with him and we'd have a review before the end of the term. But so far, so good.

My daughter has developmental needs so, she worked with us and she's been terrific. It was because of the interaction that I had with her that I didn't check anywhere else.

We had a couple of different tutors for my son before we went with Sylvan Learning Centers. We had a family member who was the head of the math department at one of the local high schools. She’s retired and she tutors, so she had helped my son a little bit. Then we used Mathnasium and we didn’t like them because they only have one branch here and it’s on the other side of town. So, it was very laborsome for us to try and make that work, especially with my son’s busy schedule. And at that time, he was not driving and he had a lot going on with club soccer. But Sylvan’s the opposite. They have two different locations, one south and one north, so that was a big difference for us.
The other thing that my son and I didn’t like about Mathnasium was that they’re very big on starting from the basics and working all the way backwards to see where are the student's deficiencies, then they start very elementary. I kinda get the concept of that but my child was still struggling in school and I thought they’d spend some time at the end on homework or help. But it wasn’t getting the job done for him, so we did that for a semester and a half then we gave that up. The people at Mathnasium were proficient in math but their concept and philosophy were not congruent with my son’s needs in school. He needed help with what was going on presently in class and 80% of the time, Mathnasium wanted to go backwards and figure out what he was missing.
Compared to that, Sylvan is the exact opposite. He also did math with them because that’s what he’s always struggled with. He started with Algebra 1, then geometry, and now, Algebra 2. I’ve been really impressed with the caliber of some of the instructors there although there have been a couple who haven’t been awesome. So they’re not equal when it comes to their proficiencies, which you get that anywhere with any job. But there have been a couple of superstars there that my son just walks away feeling much more confident about what he knows because they’re confident in how they’re teaching it. Matt was one of the superstars there but unfortunately, he has left. I know they’re trying to fill that position and they’re being very selective. So, I understand and appreciate them in trying to find a replacement.
Right now, I would like for my son to have more confidence and not feel like Sylvan is a crutch. They’ve been great though and having confidence in math is something he’s always struggled with, so it is not like this is gonna change overnight in his years in high school. But we’re at the point where we’re trying to get him through this last math class for him because I don’t think he’s planning on taking calculus. And to include to get a decent math score on the SAT. So, we will probably continue next year with some classes to help in preparing for the SATs. But we’ll see once he gets through this year and I’m gonna let Sylvan focus in getting him to be more confident in math because he’s always studies with a psychological block.
Also, one of the things I really appreciate is that the folks at Sylvan really care about my son's success. He plays varsity soccer so he’s got demands and he’s got a job, and if ever he has to reschedule because of sports or events, they’re very good about working with me on that. They’re very flexible and they never act like it’s a big imposition. But their service is pricey. You have to have the finances to be able to afford it. It’s expensive, but sometimes, you get what you pay for. And it has certainly worked out well for my son and it’s been worth it for him. They’ve helped him to maintain a B or better in math.

My older son has been improving a lot since he started with the Sylvan program. Most of the teachers are really young, but very, very responsible. They are showing great knowledge about teaching and the techniques. It’s really great working with them. I get a really good update about the improvement of my son. I’m really happy so far. My son is working on math and reading. They are also working with him on organizational skills. The Sylvan program is an excellent program to avoid learning delay on children and to keep the children up-to-date on knowledge. I like the strategies for organizational skill on children. I wish we started with Sylvan before, but we just knew about them a few months ago. But so far, I’m having a great experience with them.

Now, he is reading a lot better, able to pronounce the words, and he doesn't get frustrated anymore. Peggy is the one that runs the Sylvan location that we went with and their reps are pretty good. I have repeatedly asked for receipts for the monies spent at the Medicine Hat, Alberta learning center. To date, nothing. I have left telephone messages. EMAIL messages. The office in Medicine Hat responded via FACEBOOK Messenger asking me for my address information which I provided. I have snapped copies of our typed messages, and I have not been rude. I would like to have my receipts, and I cannot understand why this request is being ignored. Very unprofessional and I would not recommend Sylvan Learning in Medicine Hat, Alberta, but I would encourage parent(s) to contact the Medicine Hat College for tutoring and support the low income students surviving on Student loans. College students are fantastic with the kids/children and are readily available.

After paying $895 for Sylvan Learning of Fort Myers' SAT Boot Camp over the summer, I expected my daughter's SAT scores to increase substantially, if not somewhat increase. My daughter didn't miss any classes, paid attention, and did all the assigned work, and her results did not reflect her hard work. Her reading score increased by only 30 points, and her Math score DECREASED by 40 points.... thus, a net "increase" of NEGATIVE 10 points from her previous SAT. That's right... Her OVERALL score actually DECREASED. If you are looking for an SAT prep course for your student - I highly recommend that you DO NOT use Sylvan, and look for a program elsewhere. My daughter and I were extremely disappointed. I since paid for a private one-on-one tutor, and she was able to increase her score enough to be accepted to her college of choice.

Because of our friends' recommendation, we went ahead and enrolled our child at Sylvan for spelling and reading. We had to take a month off when we had some family medical stuff come up. But she starts back with them in November and so far, she’s been doing good. In the couple of months she’s been there, she’s shown improvement. By the end of the year, she’ll have probably doubled what she’s already improved on. It’s a good deal and it's worth it. Our daughter's been better with words as well as letter and number recognition. She is also wanting to read more, like wanting to bring books and read. Before, it was like she didn’t care. She’s still not reading herself now but she really wants to be read to.

Her reading improved, and how they grade them on the different areas she needs improvement on had all gone up. We used them in the summertime, and I was so happy with the service, we transferred all her files over to another Sylvan facility located closer to where we live during the school year. With the school, you have to work with the teachers and their schedules, which is not real consistent. So Sylvan's been just great. When we make our appointments, we would show up and Hailey, my daughter, has a great experience and enjoys the active learning. My daughter is working on her reading comprehension. The staff there is very sweet. They’re very knowledgeable and I feel like we have a partnership. I provide them with how Hailey's doing and help show them where she’s still struggling inside the classroom, and wait for them to give me some advice because they’re all teachers as well. I would recommend Sylvan. Hailey’s confidence in reading is improving. She’s starting to be a little bit more animated in how she reads a story instead of just reading the words and that's attributed to Sylvan working with us.

My little grandson is 12 years old and he is way behind in his learning because of behavior at school that's why I take him to Sylvan. They have a pretty good price and my grandson goes there two hours a week. The tutor is very thorough and she keeps my grandson's attention. He has really improved a lot just on his reading but they do the math too. He also explained with me that the tutor would watch everything he does, and the tutor would point out the things that he did wrong so he could correct it right then. He is more comfortable in that setting. It's like a one-on-one base thing and he doesn't have that in a regular school. In a full-time school, they would have him in a special ed class, and he gets very frustrated and have a lot of anxiety issues due to his dad passing away.

I used Kumon before and it's a world of difference with Sylvan. My daughter enjoys going there. Last week was our last day and she was asking when she was going again. We just started in the summer and my daughter's having such a positive experience. With Kumon it was more an assembly line type thing that all these kids would go through. It was great when my kid was doing fine with school but when I thought she needed some more help and more attention like with Math, we didn’t have the time to do that. I didn’t have the time to sit down and explain things because it's workbooks at Kumon. But in Sylvan they take the time to explain stuff.
I focused more in language in the summertime but now, I'm focusing on Math. They were great accommodating me with that. My work schedule is not traditional. I work two weeks evening, two weeks days. They're excellent with finding time to schedule in my daughter, Electra, whenever I needed to. My daughter is happy and if I'm seeing an improvement, I'm happy.
Sylvan is also very hands-on. I left in August saying that I would come back but I wasn't sure because my daughter was also in competitive dance, so she was very busy. I got an email in the middle of September from Michelle of Sylvan, asking how things were and just wanted to touch base with me. It was great because we weren’t going there for that month. I really like the communication they have with the parent and that's a big deal for me. If I feel like I'm getting that and they're not listening to my needs for my kid, then that's a big deal. Whatever she needs help with is what they're assisting with, which I really like.
So try Sylvan. I get a lot from parents in the waiting room. I've only been there a few months, so I always ask and it's the same thing. The lady next to me has a teenager there and she enjoys going so they wanna come back. Not every kid enjoys school and getting tutoring, so it's nice that it's a very positive atmosphere which I like. Sylvan works on that and tries to get to the positive point which gives them encouragement, especially since my kid doesn’t work well with negative reinforcement. The tutors are great. I'm really happy with Sylvan.

Then, in school, when he has a report that he needs to be done, they help him step by step --- it's huge when there's a one-on-one versus a 30-to-1. My son loves going there. He wants to succeed and he can see that they're helping him.
I had a great experience with Sylvan Learning Centers. They communicate all the time. Anytime I email them, they email me right back. With Sylvan Learning, the kid has to do the writing and the exercise or go through the instruction. He would not come home with packets or other things he has to complete at home and then fall behind because he would struggle to write or to complete the tasks. The instructors are more prepared or knowledgeable of the different ways of interacting with the kids. My son liked going there to work with most of the teachers. They found a way to motivate him and keep him on task. He already got the most offerings in the center here. In math, he got the fundamentals. In writing, he had to have reading comprehension and organization skills flow into it which took some time. He learned how to structure his ideas and approach the text. With the combination of skills in school, he’d learn to organize his thoughts and approach and break down his projects or other things in parts, instead of being scared of them as one big thing to do.
The Sylvan center transferred to a new location, and with that, they also brought new staff and it was a disaster. I was disappointed. I already got the package of hours and the new system or teachers, and the demonstration was so disorganized that my son almost refused to go and I was very close to asking for my money back. Ben put my son in San Ramon because he thought that since my son is already a little older and in high school, he was going to put him in the writing program that he already had finished even with extra hours to start from the fourth grade. Then Sylvan put in Jennifer in San Ramon. She has eyes at things for reading comprehension and critical thinking with the text in writing. That really motivated my son and helped him go through this and he’s been quite successful in high school now. In the beginning, his career had been quite turbulent and when they left him, it went great.
Education is a slow process in every individual. Sylvan has a lot of twists and turns to find or accommodate, but overall the system works. I'd tell others to interview different centers to see where they fit. That is a good program but it needs to have a good comprehension of what their kid needs and what can be offered instead of buying into the pre-planned packet of hours and all the skills that he needs to go over.

Sylvan Learning, on the other hand, is a little more detailed compared to that program. The tutor focused on English and has been helping my son work on his writing, comprehension and reading. My son's learning experience has been positive and his writing has definitely improved. I would recommend Sylvan Learning Centers.

Sylvan Learning Centers has done a fantastic job with my daughter. They are close to our house so it has worked out with them. The tutor focused on the subject areas of reading, math, science, and history with her, and they also did some Spanish. For my daughter to improve in those subject areas, the tutor helped her with reading comprehension and with basic facts and word problems in math. We've been using Sylvan for two years and since we obtained a tutor through them, my daughter has had a better attitude and she has been encouraged. Her self-esteem has been helped as well. I would recommend Sylvan.

We’ve stuck with Sylvan for years because it’s been consistently the best thing in town for us. They’re really reliable. Over the years, we have developed a relationship with them, almost an extended family. The kids can talk about what they feel and how things are going. It is an extension of our regular life, so we never feel the need to go shopping for more here in Honolulu. We were out of town for several years and part of the things of coming back was signing up for weekly courses with them again.
My son was in an AP program in the mainland and I’m homeschooling him. He’s older and he's a middle schooler. He comes to Sylvan for support, so we don’t veer off the common curriculum and they can reach out and help the gifted kids. When he was in second grade, we had a horrible time at school. He was in a nice private school, but he was being bullied. He didn’t need help with math. He needed more. Sylvan provided that extra step. He was better than any of his peers in school and they were giving him not only intellectual stimulation but the reassurance. As a mom, you can reassure them so much that they’re doing well and that it’s not their problem. However, they need to hear it from other people and Sylvan gave him what he needed.
We do the tutorials once a week. Sylvan is pricey but had I been able to afford more, I would have sent him more often. Years ago, he had some emotional support, besides academic support, from the tutors at Sylvan and that really carried a long way. We mostly focused on math, which is the wobbliest possible content in the public school system and occasionally English. My son is very good at STEM topics but he’s not good at writing essays. He’s very slow on putting things together and the Sylvan tutors are very good at tailoring things to the needs of the kids. They also help my daughter who tends to be behind on school topics.
There is a need to complement public education and, right now, they’re helping my son prepare for SSAT. They also have summer programs for kids and they go out. Being in Hawaii, they have trips to plantations. They offer fun stuff that is also hands-on learning and it looks like they really try to cover all areas. We’re glad Sylvan is here and they are really necessary. It’s worth going to them, and they’re very supportive. They will try to understand the needs of your kid and they will work towards accomplishing them. I have recommended them to friends.

Our daughter was getting extra tutoring from school prior to Sylvan. But she's now undergoing tutorials for reading at Sylvan and it's better because she’s getting more one-on-one instruction whereas at the school it’s a bunch of students. Aside from the improvement that we have noticed in the said area, we’ve also noticed an overall improvement in her confidence within herself and in her ability to try and read. Sylvan Learning seems to have good programs and experienced teachers. Also, we had a really good meeting with them at the center where we go here in Goodyear, Arizona. Sylvan is worth looking into.

I had Sylvan Learning tutor my son and focus on his reading and writing. I liked that they had it set up to where we could come in and make up our own schedule. My son was there for about a month and I was barely starting to notice changes. Then I brought him out because Sylvan was too far for me and a little pricey. On top of that, I found a schoolteacher that was willing to tutor him that was right around the corner from my house. But overall, my experience with Sylvan was good and if I didn’t have a schoolteacher tutoring my son, I would take him back to Sylvan.

Sylvan Learning was recommended by a friend. My son is now using their prep homeschooling program. He is taking tutoring sessions focused on writing because one of his challenges is getting his thoughts out. He would put a lot of pressure on himself to pick the exact right words and then he would get stuck and wouldn’t be able to write anything. Sylvan is working with him to let him know that every idea can be a good idea and that he can always go back and change things. They’re giving him some more confidence. Now, he is not stressing so much about making sure that the words are perfect. He is also grasping Math concepts so much faster.
My son goes on the Thursday evening tutoring sessions and at that time of the week, there are only about four other kids, so he gets more one-on-one time with the teacher. My son is really enjoying the sessions. Sylvan’s teaching methods are better than in public schools right now. It’s geared toward the individual student and playing to their strength so kids can get a better education.

Brooke, my daughter, took the SAT and didn't do so well but we knew she could do better on it. We decided instead that she would take the ACT and it would be good for her to get some classes or some help before taking it. I typed something in Google and found Sylvan. It was on my way home from work and I stopped there and started asking questions. Sylvan is very detail-oriented and focuses on the actual problem itself and not just overall teaching such as the actual issue and how they can correct it.
The tutor had Brooke come in and do a practice test. She noticed that Brooke was taking way too much time on each section and advised her to work on timing since she missed a lot of questions because she timed out. She also saw how she scored in each section and knew which one they should focus on. She explained how the ACT works and was good at very focused-attention various aspects of it. For instance, in the Science section, you don't necessarily have to know all the Science. It's more about knowing how to read the graph. I was so amazed by this woman. I thanked her profusely, told her she did such a great job and Brooke was very happy with it.

I tried to find some personal tutors, but they always kept leaving or they go find a different job somewhere that paid a bit more. Sylvan was my last-ditch effort to get something for my poor kid. He was behind developmentally, so he wasn’t even really reading. He needed to focus on that and some math, and he's doing great now. He loves the learning experience with his tutor.
There was only one little hiccup where my child didn’t feel he got the help that he needed one day. I talked to Sylvan to see what might have happened that day and it hasn’t been a problem since. Also, Miss Lucy is awesome. She cares. That comes across in every way possible. She does what she needs to, to make sure that my child is getting what he needs and that even the parents stay involved and are informed of everything along the way. She has always been available and worked with me on any concerns that I may or may not have had. I would tell others that they should enroll with Sylvan.

The Sylvan Learning Centers tutors focused on two subject areas with my children. One was writing and test study skills, and the other was reading. They were able to help my children improve. My son, Albert, is halfway through the grade ahead, which is my goal for him, while the writing of my daughter, Jocelyn, has gotten better, but she has a long way to go. I'd recommend Sylvan. They help fill in the gaps that the school seems to go a little quicker than necessary on certain things due to time constraints and doesn’t really delve into for the child to understand which a child also sometimes does not feel comfortable with. Sylvan is very flexible as well. It is not a big deal when we call up and change the appointment, which is good. Plus, we are not getting charged for changing the schedule, so that is always good.

We use Sylvan Learning for my son to supplement his education. We tried a lot of options before with the public schools as well as some tutoring with the neighbors and some things that were more inconsistent. They weren't week-to-week and there were more time needed. Because we needed a comprehensive solution, we ended up with Sylvan Learning.
Initially, we did an evaluation with Meghan. Then, we've decided that first of all, my son needed the organizational skill. Then from organization, he could be better at Math and Science. So, we kinda stressed on those three areas. After we got organization under wraps, we then went to Math then Physics. We also worked on his writing and how to get his writing where it should be. The people of Sylvan also teamed up with the teachers at the school. People all had the curriculum on day-to-day, and my son really had to buckle down.
My son's improvements have been incremental. I signed him up a year ago after Thanksgiving and we saw immediate difference in his skills and his organization. We were more eyes on his paperwork and on the way he conducted himself. There were also a lot of people paying attention to how we did it, when he did it and getting it to the point where he was accountable again.

In my situation in being a single parent, money is limited, and Sylvan Learning was able to work with me. The tutor focused on my son's reading comprehension. Having a dedicated time for my son to practice reading was good. With the constant feedback, I knew the areas where he was the weakest and focused specifically on those. It's been about six months that he's been with Sylvan and he has advanced to two reading levels. Hearing that he's progressing is giving him a little extra confidence with his reading and setting outside of school.
One of the things I noticed was that recently, my son was reading a book at home and I thought I was in a twilight zone. A person would not feel confident to do something if he is not good at it, and because he knows he's getting better with practice, he's wanting to do it more on his own. I totally recommend Sylvan and tell others to give it a try as they have that set time to work on a specific subject. It builds confidence and they can work with any budget.

I’m no different than any other dad. I would take on the world bare hands if would mean that she would be happy again and not cry. So I started doing some research and found an overwhelming amount of positive reviews not just online but also through friends and family who live in this area.
I called on a Friday afternoon. They made an appointment for my daughter for Monday evening. After that first season her whole outlook on Geometry had done a 180. She was happy and most important she was confident that she could do it! Let me tell not only did she do it she finished the course with a high B!! When continued with sessions through the school year and never had anything that even resembled anything negative.

Then, the first time that we met with someone from Sylvan, she said our son gravitates towards some of the males who have been involved in sports because that’s an interest of my son. This tells me that he's there communicating and developing a relationship and the tutors at Sylvan are getting to know the kid and what he likes.
We also to meet with somebody from Sylvan after every 12 sessions and we get to read comments that they’ve written about our son. So far, our son seems to like them. And although he's only been going for a few weeks, his school has done an assessment on the students to kind of see where they're at reading and we were told that our son reads with confidence and is a really good reader. I have a very good experience with Sylvan Learning and I'm very happy to have my kids there. I feel like my kids developed and progressed. I love the environment and my kids feel very happy and comfortable there. When I spoke to the people at Sylvan Learning, my concerns for my kids were writing and building vocab to summarize for reading. If they don’t know vocab, that means they can't do a summary. If they can't summarize, that means it's gonna be hard for them to write. I talked to Rebecca about how I wanted my kids to start writing. She said to me it wasn’t time yet because the kids just started and there are some areas they have to build before they start writing. I sat with her and she gave me an explanation. She even gave me paperwork. I put in a file and took it to school yesterday because we had some issues in English, and I explained to the people at the school the way that I like Sylvan.
The teachers at Sylvan start with small messages with easy vocabularies. They do all of that from easy to hard to harder. And when the kids get the new words, the teachers ask them to give their meaning. If the teachers know that the kids don’t have the full meaning for the word, they ask them to write sentences and give examples, which to me is more important than writing especially for my daughter who's in 10th grade now. She had two years away from college and I was worried about her. Sylvan moves my kids between teachers and they get to know the teacher. My kids only have two months in there and when they come out, I always ask them about their experience with the teachers. They think the teachers are all nice, friendly and they all try to help. All the teachers give enough information, answer questions and help the kids with their homework if they need it.
Sometimes, if the teachers finish early, they always ask the kids if they have any question that the teachers have to answer before they go. The teachers also make sure that they did their comment about the class for that day to take it to the kids' parents. If we have any issues and we couldn't go to Sylvan for any reason, we call them and they always give us schedules. Their schedule is flexible. Rebecca and also the people in the office always welcome us and answer our questions as parents. Yesterday, I was talking to my kids’ private school about Sylvan and how I really appreciate their hard work. They are people who make us happy. I also appreciate the people who took me there. I recommended Sylvan to my kids' classmates.

We have to choose what we spend our time on, but there has been definitely a lot of improvement from them. Both of my children were struggling in school and after I read a story about a father who used Sylvan with his son, it got me interested. So I looked into the school and it felt like a good option. I gave it a go for the summer and we’ve continued since. In the summertime, Sylvan provided help on the basics for school which were math, writing and reading comprehension. Now that school has started, the help Sylvan is providing is going to be flexible based on the needs of each child as it comes up.
My son was held back two years ago because he struggled in math. In the summer, Sylvan identified correctly a part of math that he’s always struggled in. It's rote which is repetitive math like two plus two and three plus three. It's something you have to know and memorize, and you have to have them fast. And I was happy that they found that out. They gave me confidence. In school this year, my son actually started off in Advanced Math in junior high school where he’s in sixth grade. He told me the other night that he’s bored as heck because what he’s learning in school is way far behind what he’s learning in Sylvan right now, and that he’s learning more in Sylvan than he is in school. I was really happy to hear that.
My daughter, on the other hand, is having a completely different experience than my son. She absolutely hates it. She doesn't see the use of it and she doesn't wanna go. It was because we were forcing to her to go. But Sylvan is helping her turn that around into something that she has control of and it’s working for her. The counselors have worked with her and have excluded my wife and I from the process so that our daughter can develop a relationship directly with the counselors. In doing so, she’s actually starting to come around and be more in tune with it. So Sylvan is very flexible with trying to do what they can to help students be successful. They’re really excellent and the experience has been fantastic so far. It’s incredibly expensive, but I’m fine with it. I’ve even recommended the service.

My son came home on the last day of school with a two on his EOG. Five was the highest and three was passing, but they passed him on from fifth grade to sixth grade anyway. He also got two fours in third grade and another four in the fourth grade, so two was a substantial drop. I wanted to make sure if the two was due to lack of skill even if he tried his best and did not blow up the test. We started middle school this fall with some foundation and his Sunday school teacher at the church recommended Sylvan. We sought reading tutorial for my son during the summer and we are also using them right now exclusively for the reading tutorial.
I ask my son regularly if he has been learning things and there has been an improvement so far. After the first month, I had a little parent meeting and they showed the official documentation of how my son can improve from the testing process that they used. It was nice to have concrete assessments showing specific skill improvement. Also, he has sounded more confident. He is a reluctant reader and has ADHD so he hates going. When we started the first month, we did two-hour stints but by the end of July, the people went screaming out the door and recommended that we back off to an hour because of his condition. But they also felt that he made faster progress than they anticipated. It turned out that my son blew off the EOG for whatever reason both in math and reading. He had better skills than the grade of two represented.
Sylvan's own system of assessing placed him behind his peers. He was like in the middle of the fifth-grade reading level. So even though he blew it off, it was not represented of what he could do and he still remains behind in spite of his performance. Now that school has started, we go to Sylvan twice a week only. He still hates it but he can do it for an hour. He absolutely loves the system of rewards which he is totally externally motivated. He tells me when he gets in the car every time we go how many tokens he earned and he frequently comes out with a toy from the cabinet. He recently won $15 in Target gift cards.
Moreover, my son concurrently did both types of tutoring in the month of July at Mathnasium and they did a paper and pencil kind of deal but at Sylvan, he gets to work on an iPad which is a super plus. He is super motivated by the bit of technology thrown in, too. The incentives are great and as a parent, I like the measurable assessments that show measurable growth. The tutors were super sweet and worked with his particular personality really well -- he only had one tutor that he did not care for. All in all, our experience with Sylvan has been great.

My daughter failed her test at school twice and she needed to pass it the third time in order to go to the next grade. I was looking for tutoring for her. Then I googled Sylvan Learning and I liked how they did the assessment. They broke down the curriculum and then tested her on certain areas. They saw exactly what she was struggling with and they focused more on that instead of re-teaching her stuff that she already knew. She was switched around schools a lot and it was hard for her to understand the stuff she was getting into. So they took her back to the basic stuff, like multiplication and fractions, that she might have missed in between switching schools.
My daughter is doing really well now. Since obtaining a tutor through Sylvan, she has had a lot more confidence in trying to learn something new. She has adapted to it really. Her confidence level is really high and she’s not afraid to jump into it now. I’ve recommended Sylvan Learning to almost everybody. My oldest was way behind in grade level, but our school did not care. Then, we put him in Sylvan Learning over the summer and our experience with them has been wonderful. I ended up using it when I was a kid and my mom was very insistent that we do Sylvan. My child has autism, so sometimes he has days where he just doesn't want to cooperate, but Sylvan has been great with being able to reschedule, so he still gets all of his hours in. He went to middle school this year and he goes for reading and math. Yesterday, his math teacher emailed me his first quiz of the year and he got a 100%, so we were super proud of him for that.
We started over the summer and we didn't do the reading until August because the number of hours that it would take to catch him up on math was far less than what would take for reading. I wanted him closer to the school year with more of the skills to where the improvement would really show. We know he's gonna be there for a while, so it wasn't a huge time rush to get him in for reading as much as I could catch him up for math. Their school district wants to put kids at a grade level math class even if they aren't at that level so that they are with their peers, then they want to put them in a lower level math class later on in the day, which is at their level. So, because he gets two math classes, he loses electives. Our goal was to get him as far into the next math class as possible so that he wouldn't lose his electives for too long.
My son likes to quit things and he gets frustrated. He will continue to want the prizes because that's what kids want to work for and I want to see the improvement in other places. They've been changing how the prize structure works and he gets really discouraged with the number of tokens he needs to get the prize that he wants. They needed to change their value but it's frustrating as a parent to watch your kid get super excited that he's gonna get enough tokens to earn the prize, then they change the prize amount.

A friend of mine had recommended Sylvan Learning and said that she had great success with her son, so we thought we would try it. Our Steph is a few grades behind because he didn't do so well last year in school, but he's still not doing well this year either. So, right now, we're still trying to play catch-up. We got his tutor to focus on Math and since then I think he's doing better. At least he says he is. He says he is enjoying it when he goes. So, I have recommended them to a couple of other moms as well.

Sylvan Learning is helping my child with reading, and his tutor is doing amazing. This is a kid who literally cannot pick up a book on his own merit and has absolutely no desire or drive to be a self-starter. He's a kind of kid that has to be pushed, and when he doesn't like something, he doesn't wanna do it. Then, my son begged me to take him there. Surprisingly enough, he asks me every day if he has reading today, and I'm like, "Yeah, you do." Or if I say he doesn't have it, he's like, "Oh, man!" And so, I'm really pleased about that. The confidence that my kid has gained from these people is unbelievable. It is, also, extremely important.
My kid has such an absolute ambition now that he never had before, and he's only in first grade. We're gonna continue to do it off and on as the school year progresses, probably every school year. We're gonna try to make baseball and all other types of extra-curriculars coincide with it, but it is our first priority. Other parents should go with Sylvan, too, and not hesitate.

We've been to quite a few different tutoring, we've done Kumon, personal tutoring, and we were thinking about doing Mathnasium. Also, my son doesn't like the school tutoring because it's the seniors that tutor. Then, we ended up with Sylvan and it has been very positive for him. We started out with Math when we did the testing and it was Reading and Math for him. Reading is really helping him with comprehension. He moved from school to school and he missed a lot of things in between so, Sylvan is really helping him to fill those gaps. Everything can connect, and that's what my husband and I are happy about.
His schedule is regular. He gets out of school at 3:25, and then Sylvan starts at 4:00 till 5:00, and then he has band that come 6:00 to 9:00. I was thinking he would say, "Mom, this is like too much." But he does that Monday until Thursday and then on Saturday from 11:00 until 1:00 and he hasn't been complaining about it. He wants to keep doing it until he gets all the way through school until we feel he doesn't need it anymore. This is the first time he really enjoys tutoring and I don't have to drag him there. He willingly goes and makes sure that he's not late. He's excited about how he learns. He's understanding the math with the way it's explained to him as well as everything. His grades are up in school so far for this semester. Also, he's more focused and a little more organized, when he starts process with things.
I'm trying to get some of my friends to come on board. It definitely is an experience they should try and I like the fact that it's not just one subject, Math. Sometimes we, as parents, think that that's the issue because that's where the grades are low. But in actuality, when we get tested for everything, it could be a comprehension thing. And Sylvan test your kids for everything in regards to that and helps to see where are they disorganized, where their thought process is, and where the gaps that we need to link are. It helps to help them in all the different subjects that they do.

I had my granddaughter for the summer and she wanted to graduate early from high school. She wanted to get school behind her so she could have an opportunity to start studying art. But she also knew that her scholastics was important. So she wanted to do that and do it well. When she had met with her high school counselor, her counselor said that if she could take two particular subjects, she could get enough credits to graduate one year early. I told her if she would commit to put in the work, I would do what I could to get her through it.
So we signed up for online courses. She had to take English 3 and a Math Model, a wonderful course but very difficult. There was a lot of reading and writing for English and it was very time-consuming but she's very good in English. On the other hand, she found math challenging and when I looked at it, I could help her with a couple of problems but beyond that, we were in trouble. She was frantic and upset. At the same time, I was already $1,500 into it for those two courses. So for my financial reasons and her emotional ones, as well as for what she was wanting to do with her life, I promised we would do whatever it took to get through it.
I was not having trouble getting my granddaughter to do the work. I was having trouble getting the support for her to get it finished, getting the teachers to grade the work and getting it back so that I could go on to the next lesson. Then I was having trouble with getting the level of tutoring and the time that she needed to get the work done. We were on a time schedule and I couldn't depend on other people helping unless I knew that they were professional and as committed as we were.
I started worrying about the time so I looked at my options and I considered Sylvan. At first though, I was a little worried because they seemed to have programs that were keyed to younger students. They seemed to be more into students who struggle with math in third grade or in learning how to read. I talked to Mindy and she would come in and visit but I never got to talk to her. Then I started talking to Dara and I was very adamant about the plan. We were talking about three-hour sessions three times a week. So it was nine hours a week on tutoring, which was a lot. I asked if they could handle that and at first, they couldn't. But they worked with me.
Everybody had to adjust because the needs were very great. My granddaughter needed instructors who were more than what the elementary kids needed. So we had to get those instructors because the first math instructor couldn’t help her much. It was over his head also. It was taking hours to go through two or three problems and she had a whole semester of it to do. In these two areas, understanding what her needs were and then getting her the level of instruction that she needed, Sylvan was amazing. Also, in getting her the enormous amount of time that she needed, they made that available to her too. Dara worked with me and was amazing. She would call me to tell me what was available.
We had to do a little adjusting and Sylvan came up with it. It was very nice and I was amazed. We made it through and my granddaughter was so pleased. I was also so happy that I could follow through and help her to make it happen. And Sylvan was there supporting me every bit of the way. We could not have done it without them, especially Dara and their staff. It was a wonderful experience. It was difficult but it was really neat.

Sylvan is close to my home so it’s convenient for me to get my child there. I have also heard good things about them and it was really the only place that I knew of where I could take my child to get one-on-one help. The tutors seem great too. They’re teachers so they have a background in education and many of them have been doing it for a long time. They’re really focusing on the needs of my child and they’re there for him. In fact, every person that I’ve encountered at Sylvan, from the people who helped us get registered and explained all the information, has been so great. I would highly recommend Sylvan and I’ve already recommended them to friends and co-workers.
My child has never given me trouble about having to go to Sylvan. He likes going there. The tutors make the experience really fun for the kids. They always get to participate in little games at the end where they can bring home prizes, which is really nice for them. My child also knows he’s improving so it boosts his confidence. When he started there, he was well below the grade level that he was in for reading. After about eight months of being there, he had improved by two grade levels. He’s now on track to be at grade-level reading.

If you see a problem, do not go by what the report card says. Take the student out to Sylvan, get an assessment done and see. The assessments Sylvan does are really in-depth. It breaks things down on what exactly is lacking. My granddaughter was a very sick child up until she had her tonsil and adenoids out. A lot of times, she would miss parts when she was sick. She could sort of catch up but she didn’t really have that foundation and that showed up in the assessments. When the teacher got the assessments and they worked with what the problem areas were, they focused on those foundational things.
Going to Sylvan Learning is a family thing. My daughter went to them when she was in second grade. That was around '96. Now, my granddaughter has been going for math and reading. The only thing that I wish for is if you could hire Sylvan to do all of the schooling, where the student would go three days a week for four hours a day and that was the whole school. But other than that, it's perfect.

Different learning centers are popping up left and right out here, and I checked the cost. But when I checked into one, I didn’t really like their approach for a young person who is struggling at such an early age. It seemed a lot less hands-on. First off, I couldn’t understand why it was so cheap. Then I realized it was because you did most of the work yourself with packets they would send home. But we were already struggling with homework at home. I was also doing 20 minutes of math and reading with my grandson every night. For someone who has a little bit of a learning issue, that is a lot because they get frustrated or have lack of confidence. So why would I want packets sent home? That's ridiculous.
On the other hand, Sylvan is local and their reviews are good. I went there and the two sister owners were fantastic. When they were done testing my grandson, it was as though his teacher had emailed and told them what exactly was wrong. The woman who worked with him literally mimicked everything that his teacher had said. It was amazing. That was how I knew that they were on it and that was why we went with them. Plus Sylvan’s been around forever and their name has always been out there.
When we started with them, we focused on reading. At the time, my grandson was getting pulled out of class once a week to work in the school's reading program. But we never really saw improvement although we’re in a fantastic school district. We were working with him at home too. It was difficult and he was struggling. By the time Sylvan got him, we had taught him all his 300 sight words. But there’s more to it than that. He did know how to read but not well enough to his grade level. He was having trouble with decoding and getting up into the harder words. It wasn’t until we got with Sylvan Learning that we really saw the improvement. Sylvan really came in strong at all the decoding. And there’s been constant progress too.
We had had SST meetings but none of the teachers could get a handle on where the learning issue was because he’s not bouncing or all over the board. He’s a really well-behaved young man. But his focusing is off. Sylvan has caught on to that issue though, and they’re really good about working with his frustration. They’re very patient and I couldn’t ask for them to be better.
I didn't really like the vibe of one particular tutor. She was probably a nice enough tutor and just fine with everyone else. But I didn't feel it was quite working for my grandson. She told him that I was paying a lot of money to make sure he was getting what he needed so he would really need to put all of his focus into getting my money's worth. And that set off wrong with me. You don’t share that with a little seven-year-old. That wasn’t really her place to say either, and he already has enough low comments. I want them to stay focused on what he's supposed to learn. I don't want them trying to teach my grandson anything.
I let the tutor know that I wanted to change up and they were very understanding about that. That's what I like about Sylvan. There are little personality things and you have to be able to communicate with people. This particular location is fantastic. They care. They’re very hands-on and intuitive, and it starts from the top. Whenever it starts from the top and you have great owners or bosses, it’s gonna trickle down to the rest because they’re always there. I feel kind of sorry for them because they work so dang hard. But I can't say enough good things about them.
I’m also about helping the teachers. They need support from the parents, especially with a student who is struggling. Now that my grandson's in third grade, we’re fully into math because he’s so far behind on it. When the school psychologist asked what we've been doing on our side, we've told them about Sylvan and they think it's great. The school is very happy after I've told them about Sylvan. I’ve also recommended Sylvan multiple times to a lot of people.

They focused on math -- calculus, algebra, and geometry, and according to what my son said, there has been a huge difference in terms of his improvement in the math area. I would definitely recommend Sylvan Learning. They did a great job, although the price of $50 an hour was high for a lot of people. She needed reinforcement in that, and she was not gonna get through kindergarten unless I made arrangements with the school that I would go to Sylvan and Brain Balance and get her on board before first grade. Sylvan focused on reading and they're helping her very well. She's reading and she’s spelling out words better. They're also doing a little bit of math too, and she’s right at first grade level now. Still, reading was more of our concern even though my daughter was farther behind in math as well. I wanted my daughter to stay in the habit of being in school and doing work, so I guess it still works out that way. Also, Sylvan Learning is expensive, but I can't put a price on my kid's education. Someone's making a lot of money off these kids, and it's certainly not the tutor. My advice is to ask at your child's school about private tutors and look for ads. Make sure the tutor has a college degree in your field and, if possible, certification and teaching experience. You want someone who will communicate with your child's teachers and guidance counselors. Sylvan charges a lot of money for tests that school districts do for free, and these test results should be in your child's school file. Depending on the subject, you can get a private tutor for the same or less money than you're shelling out to Sylvan.

Sylvan provides a safe, nearly one-on-one learning environment to provide many different opportunities to truly learn a subject, learn to test better, and organize a students thoughts.
When comparing the price to other durable goods, the price for tutoring can be very prohibitive for most all families. Unfortunately financial aspect of tutoring comes at a price for quality. You are paying for a strangers knowledge and credibility, and allowing them to transfer their knowledge to your child in a way that kids can understand, internalize concepts and can relate to the subject they are learning. Remember you are paying a business to solve or mitigate a moderate to complex learning hurdle so that a child can build-off what they learned, applying it to other new skills and learning as they progress through each grade level.
Our 12 year old son does well in 6th grade, sometimes he has testing anxiety and his reading comprehension could use some help too. Having our child interact with Sylvan tutors to improve his English Language Arts (ELA) grade, and test better is making a difference. Sylvan helps him to better organize his thoughts when he reads, and gives him the mental tools to help him retain those important comprehension details that he needs to improve. Focusing on individualized teaching is what Sylvan tutors are all about.
Great tutors provide that connection to forming a strong solid framework to tackling learning challenges, and building a strong foundation to learning new subjects. Unfortunately, learning new ideas and concepts take time, persistence, positive attitude towards learning, and Money!! Our son's confidence has dramatically improved towards testing and we are seeing the results in his standardize test results, class work, and homework assignments.
It would be very unrealistic to have an expectation of your child to improve his or her grades by only spending a dozen hours or so with a Sylvan tutor. Tutoring is a process, and takes patience and time and family members words of encouragement so a child feels secure. Learning is not about memorizing an idea, or taking good notes, or simply recalling a concept, learning is about attitude and confidence of understanding the details of the subject, and Sylvan nurtures these ideas.
Our 12 year old is tutored 3 days per week, 2 hours to 3 hours each session, and we are noticing small incremental results, verified through testing and noticeable in how he talks about his learning experience. I only wish Sylvan was more affordable for most families, but running a business and staffing it with knowledgeable tutors and instructors comes at a price.
If your budget allows for weekly tutoring, Sylvan was a great choice for us, and I'm sure it would likely be a good choice for your student as well. Sylvan has met our expectations, and our 12 year old agrees with that statement, as his results are measurable and will starting 7th grade in the Fall of 2017. If you have a student who is struggling in a subject like math or reading, take time to create a budget, and buy those tutoring hours consistently, and over a longer duration of time. You and your student will be happy with the hard-work and the final results. I would recommend Sylvan to all my friends and family members whose students need help academically.

Also their assessment test for the kids seems absolutely useless. I really do not recommend this place at all.

I wish I had been more diligent in selecting a tutoring source for my niece. I had my niece evaluated in August 2015 to see how far she was behind in reading and math. I thought the assessment showed an accurate report of where she stood. I signed my niece up for 60 hours @ $50 per hour, four hours per week with two hours in each subject. I was given all types of promises of what the program could do for my niece including one on one tutoring and homework help. Not only did she not receive one on one tutoring, but she received no help with her homework. When she would ask for assistance with her homework, she was told she could figure it out for herself.
If she could figure it out for herself, she would not be asking for help. After 40 hours of tutoring, I determined she was not getting the help she needed and had not improved in either subject. I submitted a written withdrawal notice which included the amount of the refund that should be credited to my account. After 30 days, I called Sylvan Learning Center regarding the refund and was told it would take 60 to 90 days to receive the refund. I find this to be unacceptable. You can charge my account for $3,000 in thirty seconds, but it takes you 90 days to refund my credit. Not only was my niece short-changed, but I have a feeling it is going to be a challenge to receive my refund.

My son learned best from one tutor/teacher and so we made every effort to make sure he stayed with her.

I tutored with Sylvan at Kahala Mall. They rely on iPads for teaching. The various lessons had numerous errors, some grammatical and some were just hugely incorrect. Example: they claimed that the word 'Dusk' meant sunrise. I was stunned, I refused to play along with this and told the student it means evening, before sunset. I brought several of these program errors to the attention of staff, who did absolutely nothing. I found a real dumb error in a math word problem. I asked the student to show it to our so-called math wizard, and he failed to detect it. There is no substitute for textbook reading. The development of the lessons is not accurate in many cases. Children are being told that they need to come back, at a huge cost to parents. Their "transition" time is bizarre. I found this location to be somewhat uncomfortable. I lost my part-time position, by bringing these things to the attention of the franchise owners.

We had a very poor and quite disturbing experience with the Lake Mary, FL Sylvan Learning Center. The director, Dr. **, was very pushy and we should have trusted out initial instincts of him being dishonest. We have so many concerns and complaints and really don't know where to start. In summation, we were lied to in regards to every aspect of the program:
1. Individual tutoring: Our children were given a tablet and received minimal, if any, help by an instructor. I didn't believe my children at first until I stayed and observed from the hallway.
2. The director slandered local schools, especially Lake Mary Prep School which dissuaded us from going there.
3. Scare tactics: We initially started just for summer tutoring, wanting our children to have an easy transition into the next school year. The director quickly approached us and said the children would need at least 4 hours of weekly tutoring if they didn't want to fail their upcoming grade. We explained our concern over our long commute to the center. Dr. ** suggested we cancel all of the children's extra-curricular activities and come to his center daily after school (an hour commute for us). We actually did this but it became too much. We would get home after 7 pm and would then have to start on homework and dinner. I explained my concerns to him and he said that I obviously do not have my priorities in order. He suggested that the center would also do the homework with the children to help with time...they didn't. My 7 year old would have to do her homework alone and would get 1/3 of it done. When I once again approached him, he said, "Well, we don't really want to waste our time with homework. You can do it for them!"
4. Cancellation of our program: I informed Dr. ** that we couldn't do this anymore and he became very verbal, started ranting, and acted quite unstable. I trusted my children with this type of person? He continued to charge our credit card (without our knowledge) for 2 more months for 8 hours of weekly tutoring! When we approached him, he said, "Well, I need a written cancellations." When I had given him my verbal cancellation, he had never mentioned the need for a written cancellation.

Well we spent about 10 thousand $ for 130 hours or so. They failed to teach my daughter BASIC math skills, which at the end of completion they wanted me to pay more to keep sending her, but the first 10 grand wasn’t enough. I confronted them and they said on various occasions about her not knowing BASIC math skills. They still didn’t teach her. Our final meeting (raised her voice) they said it’s all her fault and I wasn’t allowed to get money back.
Oh and the online parent sheets that we were suppose to have access to print, etc, that was a joke too and the instructor agreed it was not available because the web site wasn’t completed OR SOMETHING. Or they were not printable, etc. so they were not accessible. So she did what I should have done that wouldn’t have costed 10 grand and google activity sheets, print them up and handed them to me. They are a waste of hard earned money and a private tutor is indeed the way to go. If I wanted to have her fail I would have tried myself to teach her (sad) right but come on.

I am truly shocked at some of these stories!!! I personally can't speak to the money aspect, except I knew it was expensive for parents, while the tutors made a fraction of that amount. I felt I had extensive and good preparation. It was explained why students needed a certain amount of time to show progress, and how the initial testing gives a good look at the skills from k on that were not up to par...their plan is written from that. If your 8th grader shows having trouble understanding vowel patterns, or simple comprehension, the material would definitely be at a lower level but it was NEVER made to appear babish or shameful. The skill is taught until the student can show 3 scores of 100% IN A ROW - it was effective. They then would move on to the next noted impediment.
As a new teacher, they phased me in b/c it IS very overwhelming and a total learning process on how to juggle up to 3 kids with separate notebook "prescriptions" at once. I was never alone with 3 until I felt ready. My complaints were at my second center in NC. I made clear I had training and experience, but preferred lower elementary kids b/c that was my degree. I was always paired with high school kids that I'm certain knew more than I did...I was thrown 2 reading kids and a math student and I was so overwhelmed, and I had done this in Indiana for 3 years! Totally different experience. I shared my concerns with the "director" and quit...I actually believed in Sylvan and was always given the same kids, etc. I had a totally awful experience after that and was shocked they just allowed any teacher to sit and "teach" things they were never certified for....it didn't seem to matter. So sad!! I would be furious too if I lost that much money just b/c the center had zero clue how to operate correctly. From the comments, obviously many don't!
I must have been very fortunate for my first job with Sylvan, and understood and believed it worked if done correctly....student/teacher bonding is HUGE and rarely were our students different. This is sad and wrong b/c I have used the techniques I've learned there, and there is a reason behind what is taught and sometimes the duration....but they need to hire someone and fix a lot of issues! Parent/teacher talk is never done...it's with the director, who is only looking at their book of work and scores. This could be an awesome place if it were run correctly!!

I used to feel bad that I was let go from Sylvan, but now I don't. I was expected, every day, to come in and find out which 6-12 kids I had. At that point, I had about 30-45 minutes or less to get around all the teaching materials that they would need. Now, mind you, this is 3 kids at a time, all doing something different (ex. 7th grade math, 2nd grade math, 4th grade reading). This meant that my lesson planning essentially was about 10 minutes per kid. You use their tools (manipulatives, work books, wrap-ups, etc.) to prepare for these kids. Not knowing most of the kids that well, because you never have the same ones every hour or every day, I would prepare a decent amount and some would barely get through the first activity, and needed tons of help, while others flew through three assignments at a time.
No child was ever allowed to have down time of any kind, but yet you were supposed to be working with all three at different levels and different subjects. This was a job I had shortly after graduating college. Now as a REAL teacher, I can see that the goals and strategies used here are a joke and work for very few kids. It can only be truly effective if you have time to develop connecting activities with these kids, not random, barely-able-to-plan activities. I would never recommend Sylvan to anyone. Not because they let me go, but because I know how much those parents spend, I know how little we made, and I know that they were raking in the dough for a program that doesn't work for the average struggling student.

The overall morale of those I worked with, was poor at best. The time that was needed to dedicate to the role was in no way properly compensated monetarily.
And if a promise was made, it was rare that it was ever followed through by those that were to put forth the action. I am disappointed in my experience with the Sylvan of GTA, and can only request that those looking for employment with this group of Sylvan Learning Centres, to really give yourself more value to your worth, and look elsewhere - even Sylvan Learning Centres outside of the GTA, but it is highly recommended that the ones within Toronto proper, and just to the north and just to the west be exempt from your search for employment.

Absolutely the worst service ever, they know nothing about tutoring older students, the worst service and the worst leadership I have ever seen. My daughter went to them first, asked them if they tutor college students for Math 125. They said yes, absolutely they do and they tutor college students all the time. This was the first lie. Then they asked her to pay immediately $55. On Saturday she went, the tutor was slow. She finished only 6 questions in one hour. Now I am a high school math teacher and I have been tutoring high school students and college students. It requires a certain method to tutor for final exam. The time is limited, you need to skim through the questions fast, and give the student guide lines to solve problems and give them concepts and write formulas and send the student home to go over everything you covered in one hour. This way, the tutor can go over the study guide and not waste the student time and the parent's money.
My daughter was disappointed after the hour was over, she called me crying saying that she didn't benefit from the hour. The tutor was slow, she covered 6 problems in one hour and they refused to give her the $55 back and the Manager of the center, Monica ** was rude to her and told her that this is the way they do business in the center and that is why no contract was written. I immediately called a private tutor and took my daughter to him because she was panicking and crying and I paid him for two hours $60, less than the cost of one hour at Sylvan. I went after to Sylvan to meet with Monica ** the manager. She was rude, arrogant and mean. She said that they gave my daughter a service and they are not responsible whether she learned or finished her study guide or went to another tutor right away. She refused to give my money back. I told her I will write this review about them, she said it is fine.
To make a long story short, I am so unhappy with them, please don't send your kids there for tutoring, the place is looks like it is for little kids or for babysitting, not for tutoring Algebra 2 or even simple math. In addition, to write a review was not easy. The page was designed to keep rejecting to submit.

Seems Sylvan was more interested in enticing prize rewards than actual teaching.
When we expressed our frustration they then switched her to math, ignoring the reading and saying she needed "extra" tutoring. We refused to pay anymore fees. When we got down to the last 6 payments we were given a sheet of how much was left 1330 due. That was fine, no problem, we would pay. It has been a month and a half since we withdrew our grandson from Sylvan, with prepaid unused hours left. He attended for a little over 1 year. We were told the request was sent to the Regional Director, who would approve it and send it to the owner, who would cut a check for the refund for unused hours.
Having gone online to see if anyone had complaints against Sylvan, I discovered they were numerous! We trusted Sylvan, but now we know we should have checked them out before enrolling our grandson. It is a shame that not only was our grandson not helped, but we now see the Centers have an image of ripping people off who trust them to make a difference in a child's education. Below is the reply I received from the local center's director, after registering a complaint with Sylvan's corporate headquarters, one month after withdrawing our grandson:
"I have heard today that your refund was inadvertently delayed due to a chain of command issue. I submitted your refund timely to my Regional Director who then in turn approves it and submits it to our owner to cut the check. My Regional Director submitted it to our owner just TODAY - I am not exactly sure what the delay was. Rest assured that our owner now has the refund request and will be cutting you a check as soon as she can, but that may be another week or so. I cannot apologize enough for the red tape that has occurred. I understand your frustrations and that you felt the need to escalate the issue to the corporate office. Those complaints are forward directly to the center at the ownership level, and she will send your check as soon as she can! I can only ask for your patience."

Our 8 year old was struggling in math so we sought tutoring at Sylvan. The teaser is that the program will increase their competency a whole grade level. He was mid 2nd grade in math competency with a target grade of 3.9 at completion. The target was 100 hours at a cost of $4,250. We paid the initial deposits and all the subsequent payments over the course of the year. At the interval meetings the staff focused on how many more hours it would take to achieve the academic goals set forth at the beginning. At no time did they advise us that we would incur cost overruns to continue the program and meet the goals to which we agreed.
At the 95 hour meeting our son was not at the goals set forth and we were told he only needed approximately 12-43 more hours to reach the goal (grade 3.9) set at the outset. Additional costs to continue were never brought up at that 95 hour parent meeting. We kept going believing he would meet his goal and when they continued withdrawing from my bank account AFTER we paid the original $4,250 they told me we went over by 30 hours. Moreover, the monthly statements were confusing and when I sought explanation in person I was essentially told not to worry about it - we were ok based on our original agreement.
Be very careful when tracking your child's progress or you will run up your balance without realizing it. They won't say anything. I believe their intentional omissions of your account status is purposeful and now we are over cost by $1,300 (for a total cost of $5,500 - not worth it. Go to Kahn academy online. It's free).

You call the office during what are their business hours (repeatedly) and no one ever answers even though I tried about 30x per day. They eventually left a VM that said, "Didn't you get the email?" Hello, I am trying to spend $700 to sign my kid up for your class that starts in 5 days. How does anyone sign up for anything when they don't have any info on the website, don't pick up the phone and don't return calls? This is crazy. I want my kid to do well on the ACT, but apparently Sylvan is not interested in my business, so I need to explore other vendors of prep services.

When I was a grade 12 student, I went to Sylvan to help improve my study skills for a subject I was struggling in (University Biology). I was given several tests to see if my comprehension and learning was at the level it should be. The lady told me that my level was as low as a grade 7 student. Spending a very useless 4 months at this place I did not get anything out of it. Now being a second year Concurrent Education University student, I would not recommend this learning center to others. For being told I wouldn't have a bright future, I would like to let you know I am doing just fine for a student with learning skills of a "grade 7."

They had tested our son and we agreed that 69 hours will bring him to a grade level. They did not inform me about any problems at all. They did not keep appointments with me, like my time is not important. They "tested" my son after we spent $2000 and reported significant progress. When the kid returned to school, his math grades was 0 or "F". I still did not get the refund from them for unused lessons after cancellation. Please do not be that stupid to try to get their help. Waste of time and money.

After attending Sylvan for several months with zero achievement, we decided my son needed to go to a different school to get more one on one help. I contacted Sylvan in person & explained the situation. I was told I would be receiving a refund as I had paid a lot in advance. I have sent several emails to try to communicate "when should I be expecting a refund?" It has now been 9 months & just today received a call from them stating I wouldn't be getting a refund but I could use up the money at Sylvan. The refund should have been $450.00!! I was a great customer who always paid in advance. I am very disappointed with Sylvan! We don't need to use up the money/days at Sylvan as my son attends a great school where he gets the help he needs. My advise is to not use Sylvan!! Hire a private tutor!!

My daughter applied for a job at Sylvan Learning Center in Lubbock Texas. Mike Sullivan or Sylvan, lead her on and had her believing that she would be offered the job. She passed up many great jobs just to go to work with Sylvan so that she could help the children learn, in the best way that the child learns. She has taught around the world and has worked with every technique and was taught how to identify how a child best learns. The interview process was long and drawn out. She even had to interview with Mike's son. She had to take the personality profile test and many other things. ONLY today to be told that he could not offer her the job because she has a small tattoo on each wrist.
The tattoos remind her to embrace life and live to the fullest. He could have told her this a month ago in the first interview. Mike stated that the parents are too conservative. She stated to him that she was here to help the children not please the parents. I cannot believe that there are still so many tiny brained, closed minded people in this world. For your sake and your child's sake do not take your children to Sylvan.

My grandson enrolled for a summer program to get him ahead in his Math. He had finished the 4th grade with a C so we knew he needed help. He went to Sylvan all summer, 5 days a week for two hours a day. It was EXTREMELY expensive. He entered 6th grade in Aug. Today is Sept. 12 and he has an F in Math. When I presented the problems to Sylvan, their reply to me was they needed another $2000 to change his program to "Homework" Helps. Their guarantee? They do not honor it because the last branch manager is not there any longer (transferred within reach of phone) and he did not credit the 36 hrs as promised. Sylvan may have started with a heart for the children, I do not know, but now their heart is sadly only for money.

My 7-year-old son was struggling with his reading skills. His school tested his reading and said he was at an I level. He needed to be at an M level for his grade. I enrolled him in Sylvan for about 70 hours (3 days a week). I wanted him to focus on reading so I didn't allow him to play any sports during his time at Sylvan. He just completed all of his hours in July. They recently tested his reading at school again and there has been absolutely no improvement. I am angry not only at the fact that we wasted our time but also that I had to take out a loan for his Sylvan tuition (of which I still owe more than $2000). My son is now further behind his peers and it is going to take a lot more work to help close that gap. I wasn't expecting a miracle, just an improvement.

My son needed help with algebra 1, before he starts the 9th grade. I thought it would be good if we start him of early on July before the school starts and get him ready. Therefore I enrolled him at Sylvan Studio City and the executive director talked to us and made all kind of promises about how he is going to improve and succeed, and convinced me to enroll him for 150 hours of class for $55 an hour. Even though it was a lot of money and really could not afford it but she convinced me to finance it through Tuition Solution credit company and pay it with no interest in 2 years. I had no idea this was just a lie for them to get this money, because not only my son did not improved that year, also he ended up failing.
And before all this happens I tried to make them credit me back the rest of the money and stop the classes because it was not working, but every time she came up with another excuse and promises. Finally my son had fail the algebra and I am still paying the monthly payment to that credit company. My son ended up to go to summer school and I found this math teacher who worked with him for one month only and he ended up to get all A and B on his tests and pass with good grade. What Sylvan promised and did not deliver in 8 months another teacher delivered in only one month. I am very angry with Sylvan and their staff, because all they did was lying to me and taking my money.

After I spoke with my son's teacher I found out that my son did know the work. He was just too lazy to do it or put any real effort into it. Turns out the instructors DO know what they are doing. I've apparently been paying for summer school for no reason. Sylvan thank you for helping my son, I can kick myself for not catching this earlier, I guess I need to supervise my child more than I thought. Hopefully once I straighten my son out he will actually start to produce what he has picked up at Sylvan and stop wasting mine, his, and his teacher's time.

We've been going to the sessions faithfully and he continues to tell me he enjoys going but I don't see the results. I've gotten his report card an it's just not what me and my husband expected. I would like to inform parents of my experience with Sylva Learning center in Lehi, Utah. My child had a large amount of hours set up for his program. I was given the option to pay at the start of the program, and I would get a discount on the cost of each hour. At this time, I asked if he didn’t need all the hours, would we get the extra hours refunded; they assured me I would. I also informed them that we had a long vacation planned for the summer, and they told me that if I just let them know in advance that it would be fine. When my son finished his program, he had 26 hours left and they told me that they would send me a refund and the gift card he had earned. Two months later, I had not received it so I got in contact with the center and found out that she had forgotten about the gift card and would send it out, which she did. The refund, she said, had to go to the director and board for approval.
A month later, I got in contact with them and I was informed that they would not refund my prepaid hours because they were technically used but excused during the summer time we were gone, and they would only transfer them to another child or person. My son is the youngest and I have no need for the hours. So the lady running the center said she would help me with finding someone to buy them and keep asking the board to get a refund. This has been about a year of trying to get my money and the last thing that was told to me when I went in about my refund is that the accountant was looking at it and I may get 16 hours now refunded. Now, they won’t return my phone calls or when I go in to talk to them, she is busy and doesn’t call me back. This has been my experience with the Lehi, Utah center and I would tell parents, DO NOT PREPAY ANY AMOUNT TO SYLVAN!

Sylvan is NOT in it for the children. They are 100% in it for your money! All I was looking for was the study skills program, as my child gets excellent grades but was home schooled for 3 years and is re-entering private school next year. I do not want grades to suffer by going back into school so I thought a study skills program may be beneficial. They made me bring my child for an assessment at a non-refundable cost of $125.00!!! We were met at the door and the woman told us her name but not her credentials. Was she even a teacher??? I asked questions about the paperwork they were making MY MINOR CHILD fill out and she acted offended that I was asking and obviously didn't want to answer my questions.
I should have just left, but I thought I was doing a good thing for my child. They had my child in a room for the assessment. Next thing you know they had computer work, I thought, which I found out later were more personal questions! My child HATED it. I had also found a Sylvan coupon online for $25.00 off the assessment which I brought, as the coupon said, but the "director" said she'd let me know. Let me know what? Refund the $25.00!! But I just very politely said, "Okay, thank you". I checked my credit card statement and NO refund! Why am I not surprised? These people are not caring teachers who want to help kids. They are out for lots of money, period!

I am literally cleaning up and they called me... I apologized profusely and they just scolded me. So we find an in-home tutor. They charge us $400 for leaving!!! My daughter has autism and this comes out of her autism funding. Nice.

I enrolled my 8-year-old daughter at a local Sylvan Learning Center to help improve her timed 2nd grade addition/subtraction scores. I was told that we could purchase a "homework block" of hours since she had a specific need or focus. The center allowed us to purchase a 5-hour block at the hefty price of $50.00 per hour. In total, $250.00 worth of tutoring. When we arrived at the very first session, the admissions person asked, "Where is your paperwork/practice documents?" Since I had not been told to bring anything, I did not know what she meant. However, since my partner and I had been working with our daughter at home nightly, I just happened to have a folder of sample test problems. So I went to my car to promptly retrieve them for the session.
At the end of the session, my daughter emerged with no paperwork. So I asked if we could see the work that she completed. The tutor reluctantly released the work, which made me curious and suspicious since this was our very first tutoring session - ever. When we got home, I looked at the work which had a huge smiley face at the top and said, "excellent" at the top. After checking the work, I saw that my daughter had missed several problems that were marked as correct. I asked my daughter about the scenario and she said that the tutor handed her a calculator and had her check her own work! Apparently, the tutor did not go over it again to ensure that the problems were right.
What a ripoff. I mean, I am paying these people to basically babysit my kid and we were providing the worksheets and the grading. I definitely do not recommend this company or service. You are better off trying a more reputable company or do the work at home yourself with your child. Just read the plethora of other bad reviews provided by others just like me. Shame on you, Sylvan. You might as well be criminals because you stole our money.

My husband and I took our son to Sylvan Learning Center in Helena, Montana when he was 15 for tutoring in multiple subjects. He went a total of 3 months twice weekly. His grades did not improve. He stated that he felt like he was treated like a child and not like the teenager he was. We stopped the tutoring after 3 months as it was very costly and ineffective. We received a paper billing statement via mail for 4 months. We paid the amount asked ($50). After four months, we did not receive another statement. I called Sylvan and left a message with request for someone to call me back - no one did.
Last week, my husband began receiving phone calls while at work from Rocky Mountain Collection Agency stating that we had not paid our bill and had thus been sent to collections. Additional "late" fees as well as collection agency fees had been attached to the bill. On behalf of Sylvan Learning Center, this collection agency was now asking for nearly $1000 in full immediately. I called Sylvan Learning Center to inquire why this was happening. The Billing department woman stated that she could clearly see that payments had been made consistently for four months, but after that they'd not received any more. She stated that three more statements were sent to my husband and I. I stated that this did not happen. She then stated that they had sent them to us via e-mail. I asked her why they would do this as we'd been set up for paper billing statements. She had no answer. My husband checked his email account, looking for these e-statements - there were none. The billing department woman at Sylvan stated that the situation was out of her hands now that we'd been sent to collections. There was no apology.
We now have a hungry creditor bothering us daily, threatening our credit and stating that he will not take payments from us as he wants the money in full now. We don't know what our rights are with this situation, but hope that someone is willing to give us some guidance in this matter asap before our credit is affected.

I took my son to Sylvan Learning Center twice per week as recommended by the director.
On 11/29/12, I had a conference meeting with the Director Stephanie ** to discuss my son’s progress. At that time, I was excited because I was expecting to hear my son had achieved mastery in Algebra, but his skills assessment information Stephanie had given me had not changed from the skills assessment my son had initially taken in August 2012. I asked Stephanie why my son’s test scores had not improved after attending 43 hours of the Algebra program. I am sure the Algebra program has a curriculum? Then Stephanie stated their main focus was to help my son with his homework, but if I purchase more hours, they would be able to follow through with the Algebra curriculum. She was trying to convince me to purchase more hours.
Needless to say, I was quite frustrated and disappointed - I was expecting a higher level of service. And I do not want to continue to spend any more money on this problem. I do not want to take my son to Sylvan Learning. I wrote a letter to the franchise owner Fran Dyer and explained my son had received a deficiency in his high school Math, and she refuses to give me a refund and offered to give me 10 hours. We enrolled our children in a Sylvan in Central Illinois in September. We spoke with the director about what our needs were. She was very professional, caring and knowledgeable. We signed up through Sylvan for an offer that seemed too good to be true: The tuition dollar amount needed was applied for through "SpringStone" and it was understood that if we made a regular payment of $**.00, then it would be paid off in two years, and there would be no interest charges. Later, Sylvan talked us into more classes - all of which could be put on the SpringStone account (increasing the balance). Now, of course, the "regular payment of $**.00" would not cover the payoff in two years (because of the added classes/tuition). But the realization is that the plan we signed up for is "interest deferment", meaning that if we don't pay off the entire amount by the payoff date, we will have to pay the full amount of accrued interest (over the last two years). We signed up for it. We got talked into it, even clear on what it meant. But in the desire to give our kids every advantage we could, we've lost the chance to enjoy the few "discretionary" things we could have done over the next few months. Like others, our son had "reviews", but his study skills haven't really improved and his grades certainly haven't.

Back in April, we took our then 7th grade son, who was a straight A 6th grader and has As in math, to Sylvan to get him prepped for Algebra 1 to take the entrance exams for two local STEM programs. Our expressed wishes were for him to focus on grade-appropriate Algebra concepts for these purposes. For 5 months he worked with Sylvan's tutors and would routinely come out afterwards and say that what he did today didn't involve algebra but was instead "review" based on what Sylvan's testing said he needed work on.
Several times during that 5 months (which over the summer involved one or two-hour sessions 5 or 6 days a week), we reiterated to the facility director that we wanted our son focusing on Algebra with specific goals in mind. On his first day of Algebra class in 8th grade, he was given a skills assessment packet to bring home and complete. He was absolutely freaked out because he didn't understand any of it. He might as well have been handed a Greek novel. I couldn't understand how after 5 months all of the concepts (properties, terms, basic graphing) were totally foreign to him. He and I spent hours at the dinner table going over the concepts and trying to get him comfortable with the basics (no easy task for someone who hasn't done Algebra in 25 years).
The fact that even first week Algebra 1 was completely lost on him tells me that Sylvan failed completely to comply with our goals for our son and in fact cost him the prep time he could have been spending with a real tutor. I contacted the center and told them he would not be returning and that I wanted the unused hours cancelled (we purchased a package of 111 hours, of which we used 60 or so) and the money for them refunded (which they are doing) and that I wanted at least a partial refund of some hours spent there since they clearly did not provide the service they agreed to provide! Both the center director and the region manager flatly refused any refund for hours spent, insisting that we're just not seeing the benefit of the tutoring because we didn't keep our son there for the full program length.
The way I see it is that if you can't teach "week 1" Algebra in 5 months, more hours will not help accomplish anything. Their assessment testing at Sylvan generates pretty graphs and terms like "grade level equivalency" scores that have exactly jack to do with your child performing in "real" school. Their "1 grade level" guarantee isn't one grade school level - it's one "benchmark level" within their definitions. And if your student doesn't improve 1 grade level, they offer more hours! Completely worthless. Early termination of the program came with a huge penalty as well. Because we bought a package bundle, we got a rate discount of $15/hour.
When we terminated prior to using the entire 111 hours, all of the hours spent were billed at the higher "pay as you go" rate, making them 33% more expensive than when we bought them. This is in the contract we signed, so I cannot argue against this except for the fact that they get more money for not doing what they were paid to do than by actually doing it. In short, I consider what Sylvan did to be plain and simple theft. I have filed a complaint with my area's BBB and am going to be talking to a legal counsel to see if I have any recourse. In the meantime, I promised the regional manager that I would do everything I could to let other parents know of the scam that is Sylvan.
If you are considering taking your child here (which I cannot recommend against strongly enough), know that you will never really understand what your child is working on. And that if their tutoring turns out to be completely ineffective, you will be flatly refused any compensation for the time, effort and self-esteem it costs your child or the money it costs you for them to go there and fail. I would avoid this company like the plague.

The hours are non refundable per the policy statement. In other words, I scheduled my time in advance weekly. If I had a conflict and called to reschedule or cancel and those dates are not refundable.
Who runs a legitimate business like that? When we reviewed the agreement, there was no clear discussion about that policy. They said they would be able to help but they would need to evaluate her first which would be $199 but that there was a coupon out that would reduce the price to $100. I did need to pay a $50 deposit "non-refundable" deposit which the non-refundable part was not made clear in the phone call. I've cancelled the evaluation and they won't refund the deposit without approval from the owner. The director mentioned that she could try to request a refund from the owner but he would probably say no. This just solidifies the complaints that have already been logged on this site. Definitely buyer beware.

My wife was employed at the Sylvan Learning Center in Bartonsville, PA when it closed down suddenly. Not only was there no warning of the closing, my wife was never paid for the last 2 1/2 weeks of work there. We are struggling just to put food on the table and take care of our child. Call, emails, and letter have led nowhere. My wife deserves to be paid. She gave an awful lot to that company. I would never recommend Sylvan to anyone, whether it is for their child or a job.

The Sylvan learning center in Bartonsville, PA abruptly closed on the 26th of October 2011. The franchise holder Joseph ** has not returned any phone calls or emails since the business ceased operation. They are holding $900.00 in unused tuition payments. Sylvan corporate refuses to take any action even though they have a contract in place with the franchisee that specifically states when shutting down they must transfer you to another center or refund your monies. Neither happened and the corporate entity refuses to hold the franchisee accountable to the contract they signed with Sylvan corporate. It is an absolute disgrace that in this difficult financial time, corporations willingly allow people to run off and take you money. I’m out $900.00 in unused tuition money that I want refunded.

Sylvan is sold out to franchisees. A lot of people don't know that. My daughter actually got a good education at the Longmont and Boulder, CO centers. She had a very good teacher. However, Sylvan, in general, doesn't keep their promises and don't trust them. My daughter took Algebra 1 for credit and it was approved by her school to do. At almost the end of her course in Longmont, CO, she was informed that the center would be closing and she would be moved to Boulder to finish. She went to Boulder and finished, and had the same teacher who moved there too and the director there said he would get the transcript to the school.
At that time, the Boulder center was closing down too and all the people there were upset at losing their jobs. My daughter went on to school and they allowed her to take Algebra 2, the following year. It wasn't until now that she is a senior that they informed us that Sylvan never gave them the paperwork. I do fault the school for waiting so long to let us know, because if we knew the year before, we could have enrolled her in different classes to make up for it. We had no way of knowing they didn't receive the transcript because they allowed her into Algebra 2 and she finished it.
We contacted Sylvan's head office in Baltimore because the franchisee of this area completely closed down all his centers. The four centers had been owned by H&S Educational Enterprises, Inc. which is owned by Bruce Hassan, Sherry Hassan and Kristin Smith of St. Augustine, FL. I do not know if they own Sylvans in Florida, but they owned the ones here in Colorado and will not acknowledge my emails. The head office said they only received the progress reports as far as Longmont, but none of the Boulder paperwork. Last week, they agreed to send the transcript with a lower grade taking into account the part of math they didn't have credit for. So basically, they were averaging the 0% into the 100%. We didn't like that, but if she doesn't get some type of credit, she doesn't graduate.
Today, Nina at the information desk contacted us to tell us that they changed their minds and couldn't, in good consciousness, give her a transcript based on something they didn't have; even though the director of this franchise area gave them a call and told them what happened. They want to do testing on Sarah (at my cost) and if she doesn't do well on material she studied back in 2009, I am fully confident they are going to offer their services for more money, of course. I don't trust them. I don't trust their test to be honest and I refused to have her take more hours from them. Fat chance of us paying them even more money. I don't trust their testing because every time my daughter took a test, they decided she didn't do well enough and that she needed to repeat almost everything at least once and sometimes, twice. That's how our bill got so elevated. We bought into it because she has never been strong in Math and thought maybe she was doing badly. Yet she went on to high school Algebra 2 in a highly-rated school, did well and never had to repeat anything.
Apparently, according to a woman named Glenda at the main office in Baltimore, they needed three or four days to sift through paperwork the franchisee 'might' have sent in when they closed and it 'depended on what condition they sent it in'. It totally flabbergasted me that there isn't a requirement for submitting paperwork regularly and in a certain order, or when a franchise closes. They didn't locate any paperwork and would only go with the numbers that had been entered into the computer system, which was only the work through the end of the Longmont center. So basically, I paid over $8,000 for a product I didn't receive and my daughter gets to pay for the mistake by not graduating with her friends and being embarrassed. She is devastated and she worked the hardest of all on this. Three days a week for two hours at a time, for almost a whole year.
The main office blames the franchisee, and the franchisee won't speak to us. It is the main offices' issue, though, in my opinion. It was their Sylvan name we trusted and no longer trust. They want to sell their franchises, but they don't want to be responsible for them. If your franchisee screws you over, tough luck. Even getting my money back for a product I didn't receive won't take the pain away from my daughter of not being able to graduate. They have even refused to do that and they only referred us to 'Legal'. My daughter is sweet and kind to everyone, shy and sensitive, and she works so hard at everything, even things she finds especially difficult. I've been blessed to have such a usual child who didn't take me through the teenage trauma of most girls, and I am angrier than I can ever convey.
Don't buy the lie that they care about you or their students. You are just money to them and if you aren't paying at the moment, you don't matter. I am posting this everywhere I can because I think people should be warned. You are putting your child in the hands of a franchisee that you know nothing about. It isn't the same thing as eating a burger at a McDonald's franchise or playing a game at a Laser Tag franchise. It is much more important than that. Unfortunately, Sylvan doesn't run franchises and keeps records with the same diligence and responsibility McDonald's does. Ask the teachers at school for recommendations for a tutor that other kids have worked with and had good experiences with, or ask other parents. It'll be cheaper and more reliable, and since the teachers and parents aren't usually making a living off selling the product, it will be more honest.
It should be a lot cheaper to find a tutor that way. We began by being told this was going to cost us $4,500 for the school credit and it kept elevating to almost $9,000. They knew we needed it as a credit and took advantage of that, and are still trying to. I am posting this everywhere a review is possible, just to warn people. The reason you read good reviews in one place and bad ones in others is because the franchisees are all different people and the company, as a whole, is not cohesive or discerning.

I paid $99 to have my daughter assessed in June 2011. I met with a Sylvan representative at the Metairie location to review the results. I paid $95 to register my daughter for the Slidell location, which I was told was owned by the same owner. I completed the necessary paperwork to enroll my daughter for the Slidell location to begin on August 16, 2011. At the end of July 2011, Rebecca from Sylvan called to change Anna's tutoring time from 5:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. I called Sylvan's Slidell location on August 11, 12 and 15 to ask a question about which date the tuition was due. I only got a voicemail from "Beth", who never returned any of my calls.
When I showed up with my daughter at 5:00 P.M. on August 16, Carol, the lady at the desk, said she didn't even know who we were and that my daughter was not in the system. I couldn't believe it. How could she not be in the system? Sylvan had already spoken to me about the dates. They had already been paid the registration fee. I left there because I was very upset. Sylvan is an expensive solution to get homework help for my daughter but I was willing to give it a try. After what happened, I decided that Sylvan was not a good choice for me or my daughter. I am on a fixed income and have to assure that every dollar I spend is spent responsibly. I lost all confidence in that business after the way I was treated with a total lack of professionalism and consideration.
I requested for the return of the $95 I paid for the registration. I think it is a fair request considering what happened. I am not asking for the assessment fee as I realize this was completed. I spoke with the owner Sal Cusanza on August 17 and then mailed him a letter on August 23, 2011. I have since called Julie in the business office up to 4 times a week asking for my refund. I keep getting the run-around. I am totally frustrated and disgusted at this point.

No wonder she never got any better. Not only that, but you had to pay extra money when they scheduled conferences to tell you how the student was doing. We had previously enrolled my son in the study skills program in Grade 9. In this program, the math instructor was very good and helped my son attain a passing grade in Grade 9 math. For Grade 10, we enrolled my son in a homework support program to help him with his Grade 10 math. Unfortunately the Math instructor that was there for Grade 9 had left and a new one was hired.
After a few weeks, my son commented that the new person was not nearly as good as the previous year. We decided to give him a chance as my son was doing well at homework completion and we were optimistic at this point. When we had our first parent-teacher meeting with the school, we were not at all happy with what we heard. The teacher was confused as to my son's test scores not reflective of the nearly 100 % homework completion. We had a number of progress reports that indicated that he was capable of doing the work but just needed to work on his speed and he was progressing well and showing an improvement in his understanding.
Unfortunately his mark in the subject did not at all reflect this as he ended up with a 38%. I went to the office and spoke to the director at the time and she could not offer any explanation as to why there was such a discrepancy. We tried to arrange for additional support in preparation for the final exam but they were not able to provide this. We ended up hiring a private tutor to try to salvage the year. The tutor's assessment of my son's current level of understanding was not favorable and although they worked many hours to try to prepare, my son still failed.
I spoke to my son again about what he did during his sessions at Sylvan to try and understand how he could have completed all his homework and not managed to grasp the subject at all. He felt that the instructor that he had the second year was not nearly as knowledgeable and that rather than instructing him on the homework, he often completed the exercises first and my son would copy them. That this was his method of instruction while the other instructors explained in detail each step and this was why he had previously done better.
I received an email at the beginning of the next semester inquiring if we were planning to continue for the next year. At this point we currently had outstanding hours remaining and a balance owing for the previous year. I responded that I was very unhappy with the results of the last session of Math for Alexander. His mark in this last semester was 37% and actually went down after his exam. I expressed the concern that it would appear that all that was happening during his sessions is that his homework was being completed for him rather than him doing it with instruction and feedback.
I explained that this last session fell far below our expectations and I believe it is clearly the loss of the previous instructor that was the major contributor to this. The teachers that worked with my son on Math in this semester did not help him at all. The progress meetings that we had with them on this clearly did not reflect his actual math results. As of that point we would not be continuing with the remaining hours, can you please tell me what my balance is without them. I received no response through email or mail.
Three months later I received an email from a collection agency that they where pursuing me for payment on the outstanding amount. I called the Center Director and inquired as to why they had not replied to my message and why they had sent this to collections. She informed me that they had sent me letters to my address. I asked her to clarify this and she explained she had sent them to my wife's name at my address. The name that she had on file was not my wife's so I never received them.
Now I am even more concerned that even their bookkeeping is inquisition as the account does not even appear to be in my name. I asked to speak to the head office to try to resolve this and after doing so, they did not acknowledge my concerns and that I had to deal with the collections people.

I had both my children assessed by Sylvan for challenges that they were experiencing in school mainly surrounding reading. My daughter is 10 years old, in fourth grade. She has been on an IEP (Individual Education Plan) since she started school for speech and language delay. This delay continues to create challenges for reading comprehension for her. We were spending hours on homework with her. We wanted to get her additional support for the homework and had a goal of getting her to a point where she would not require an IEP. We enrolled her in the "unlimited" program that Sylvan offered for $2995. She went 12 hours per week, 4 of the 12 hours were homework support; the other 8 hours were for Sylvan's reading program. She went all of March, April, and May. She accumulated over 120 hours of reading support (this doesn't include the homework support hours). Sylvan's initial assessment said that she would require 65-77 hours to master skills in her grade level. At the end of May, by Sylvan's own report she had not mastered the skills. In addition, at her IEP meeting at her school, no noticeable difference had been seen by her team of teachers.
Further, the school testing performed in late May showed that she was at the end of a second grade level in reading assessments (DRA testing, standard in this school district). Sylvan testing performed in the same time showed that my daughter tested at 5th grade 4th month overall in reading (figuring reading comprehension and vocabulary). However, by their own admission, her first time around on the test, she didn't do well. So, they had her "look it over again" to generate better results. We brought Sylvan and school together for a meeting. Sylvan attributes the gap to their style of test (multiple choice) versus the school's (open-ended questions). Sylvan offered 8 additional hours, but really what will 8 hours do that over 120 hours didn't do? They are firm that they will not do anything more than the 8 free hours (or 2 summer camps) to close this gap. I put my daughter, our family time, and her growth in their hands for 3 months straight and saw no results. When this came out, they offered 8 hours. I have $3000 invested and am thoroughly disappointed that they were not taking steps to make her successful at her school and testing that is done in our state.
My son is 8 and in second grade. He had challenges with reading, but unlike my daughter is not on an IEP. (He does not have any learning delays, speech problems, etc.) He also did not show much growth in the testing that the school offered. Sylvan's testing (multiple choice) shows him at beginning 3rd grade. The school testing (DRA, also multiple choice at this level) at end of 1st grade. My son also went 12 hours a week for 3 solid months. Sylvan didn't offer any support for him. His cost was also $2995. Additionally, like my daughter, Sylvan stated that he would require 64-76 hours to master 2nd grade skills that showed a gap in their testing. After over 120 hours, there were still quite a few skills for 2nd grade level that he had not yet mastered, by Sylvan's own report. So, to sum it up, I spent nearly $6000 and 3 solid months of our lives, and the kids are no further along in school with testing or otherwise. Sylvan has nothing to offer to make this right. We have lost nearly $6,000 of our money.

I used to be a Director of Education for Sylvan (prior to that I was a high school English and History teacher for 5 years, I have 3 degrees including a masters in curriculum development). First of all, it doesn't matter which one you go to every single program is the same. The Math and Reading programs are sent from corporate to every Sylvan and as the Director, you cannot change the program in anyway, or else they cannot offer the one grade level improvement guarantee. They claim to tailor the program to your child, but they can't. They can omit certain skills that your child may not need to learn, but other than that, every child will learn the same things with the same books at the same time.
Furthermore, Sylvan's testing is a complete joke. They expose your child to a complicated test in a format that your child is not familiar with. After your 36 hours, they then give your child the same test, however now they have had 36 hours of worksheets showing them how to answer these test questions, and have of course, seen the test before and are more comfortable with it. There is no correlation whatsoever between the reading program and school.
As a Director, you are sent on a week-long training program in Baltimore where they teach you how to use wiggle language to avoid questions and to sell their system. As a high school teacher, there is no benefit from the reading program that couldn't be gained from reading with your child every night and checking their homework. It would be more helpful to speak to their teacher and set up daily sign-offs on homework through an agenda, then having your child sit for 3 hours a week doing multiple choice activities out of workbooks. Directors are even taught to downplay the effectiveness of private tutors (the main competition that sylvan has) because "although they may help your child do better in school initially, there will be no long term results". This is also untrue. The benefit of a tutor is that they actually work with your child on the activities that your child is doing in school, and when they have questions, the tutor can help them to understand.
Sylvan wants you to believe that you need their program in order to catch your child up and help them get ahead. In my 3 years with Sylvan, I never saw a single child get to the point where they were ahead. Furthermore, students who had been with Sylvan for a long time were often still failing their classes (especially English) because the material is so irrelevant to the classroom.
In training, we were also taught how to roll students from one program into another and how to keep them paying Sylvan. The programs are set up so that your child will score very low on a test (to create a sense of "urgency") that is ambiguous and doesn't truly reflect school grade (it’s true-they are "Sylvan Grades"), and then a set amount of hours are required for them to move toward their "grade level", however by the time this is reached, the child is already at the next year and school and will have to be tested all over again.
It is a complete sham. I wish more people would explain how crooked this system is, but Directors are afraid because we are forced to sign a waiver stating that we will not tell anyone how the Sylvan system works. I beg you to save your money. Get a private tutor, or work out a solution with your child's teacher, but don't throw your money down the corporate Sylvan tube.

I trained to work at Sylvan for a part-time job. I am an experienced teacher with an M.Ed. After a few weeks there, I decided that their program does not provide a quality experience for the students, and parents could spend less money and get better results simply by hiring a 1-to-1 tutor for their child. Because Sylvan makes money by enrolling as many students as possible (and underpaying teachers), their set-up is usually about 3 students per teacher at a table. Since all of the students are at different levels, it is virtually impossible to deliver good instruction.
Sylvan tries to promote the 3:1 ratio as optimal (for a combination of independent and guided practice, supposedly leading to a better transition to whole class experiences), but this is simply not true. To accommodate everyone, I was jumping from student to student, all of whom needed more intervention than I was giving. A lot of the assignments were too easy or very boring, which is why Sylvan has us recycle the work ,rather than share it with parents. A lot of it is just worksheet, book practice, and simple strategies you can get at any educational materials store, or from a classroom teacher.
The curriculum is not updated, and they have virtually no technology experiences available for the students. I would advise any parent considering Sylvan to find a good personal tutor for your child, who makes no promises, but shows you exactly what they are doing with your child. Also, invest in educational software or subscriptions to websites that will provide an interesting game format to reinforce skills (rather than the dull worksheets they'll do at Sylvan). Your child deserves better, and you definitely don't get what you pay for by bringing your child to Sylvan. As a caring educator, I was really dismayed to realize that the Sylvan bottom line is, quite simply, profit.
