About Freedom Debt Relief Reviews
Freedom Debt Relief is a nationwide debt relief company that provides debt settlement services and education. The company requires applicants to have at least $7,500 of unsecured debt. Its fees vary by location and range from 15% to 25%, depending on the state where the client lives and the amount of debt they enroll. Though user credit suffers in the short term, Freedom Debt Relief’s credit score impact study, which was updated in 2022, found that most customers saw credit score recovery in 36 to 45 months.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- No fees until settlement reached, authorized by client
- Has resolved over $15 billion in debt in 20-plus years
- Works with high debt amounts
- Long-term credit recovery
Cons
- Fees up to 25% of settlement amount
- Short-term impact on credit
Bottom Line
Freedom Debt Relief is a good match for those with $7,500 or more in debt. Although its fees can range up to 25% of the settlement amount, fees are only collected when a settlement is authorized and a payment is made toward that settlement.

Thank you, Freedom Debt Relief. If not for your help, I would have never been able to afford my credit card monthly payments. I also would never have been able to pay them off. Being out of work and not being able to find a job has caused a lot of stress in my life. Being credit card debt-free is a relief. Thank you again.

My brother contacted me and after he agreed to pay off my two creditors, he was listed with a bad credit report as well as me. The credit cards from Discover, and I'm not sure of the other at the moment, had some charges by him. But the cards were in MY Name (Wanda **) not James **. But he agreed to pay the indebtedness, which was done, but then he was listed as a bad credit through those reporting agencies. Please have this corrected! Immediately, we were not informed of him listed as the card holder, and have not heard from anyone since this was paid off!!! The above email is my brother’s. I don't know how things got this confused. My address is **. Check your records and get him removed please.

I think that you should follow up with your account longer. I think it is unfair that as soon as the course is taken and finished, you stop everything. I had received a 1099 form and sent an email to see if it was duplicated and was to contact the financial institution myself. Do not leave your clients hanging out there.

Heavily in debt, my wife and I were struggling to make payments to too many credit cards each month due to a failure of an internet business. With a part time job and our Social Security checks, we could not see any end of bill collector calls and daily letters asking for payments. After hearing an advertisement for Freedom Debt Relief on a local radio station from Tom Sullivan, whom I respected highly, we chose to accept Freedom Debt Relief's offer of help. Thanks, Freedom Debt Relief. We couldn't have made it without you. If you are in the same condition as we were, what are you waiting for? Call Freedom Debt Relief now.

I was very happy with the service Freedom provided. I should have done it sooner. I just wish I would have known you have to pay income taxes on all the money you don't pay your creditors. I did not realize this until after I started the programs. Even after one creditor sued me, they told me how sorry they were after the settlement!

If it was not for FDR, I don't know where I would be right now, still struggling probably and hating it.

I loved the program until I got a 1099 form for the differences paid for taxes. I ended up owing over $11,000 due to not knowing the law and knowledge of having to pay back the difference of what I saved from the creditor. In the end, I ended up paying the same amount that I saved from paying the creditors. Also be careful of Discover. They are not willing to work with you!

Everyone at Freedom Debt Relief were professional, courteous and very informative whenever I called in to ask any questions about my account. The friendly staff are always available to ask any questions and they seemed to always have the right answers. I would highly recommend anyone interested in getting out of debt within a reasonable amount of time to give them a try. I started the program in November 2009 and they settled 6 credit card accounts for me within 3 years. What a relief it is to now be debt-free!

I was in debt for almost 30 years of my life, living off credit cards and personal loans. After my job of 32 years was outsourced, I became very nervous about my debt of almost 100k. I needed help and that was when I find out about Freedom Debt Relief. I called them and they were very nice, professional and helpful, and I made up my mind that it's now or never or go bankrupt. After a few conversations by phone, they made a plan, and after 36 months, I could not believe I was debt-free. God bless everybody at Freedom Debt Relief.

I was asked how long I wanted to take to become debt-free. I selected a 2-year program. That did not happen. After 2 yrs. of large monthly payments, I was told I had one remaining loan. It would take 4 additional months to end my program. After the 4 months were completed, they continued to take money out of my TD Bank account. I had to close the account to stop the transaction. It took about 30 days plus a complaint letter to the BBB; then my money was refunded.

Overall, I was very pleased with Freedom Debt Relief. They took care of settling the credit cards. My concerns are: I wish they would have told me which credit card companies are very reluctant to settle. I was actually sued by a credit card company I listed with Freedom. This is a very black mark that is more harmful than the settling on credit cards. When I looked at my credit report afterwards, I noticed the numerous wrong addresses the credit reports had listed for me.

Freedom does a great job of selling the program to you. They do a great job of getting you started on saving to pay your debts. Where they lack heavily is in customer care. I called many times for advice on what to do regarding a creditor taking me to court. All they could say was they were not lawyers so could not give advice. This is not what I wanted to hear. I would not like their legal advice but one would think they could give experience advice, as I am sure this happens a lot. So don't be fooled into thinking your creditors will not take you to court because they will and Freedom Debt will not be there for you. So I ended up taking a loan and paying this problem off, which is what I should have done in the first place. Would I recommend this company? NO.

After two years working with FDR and $14,000 paid into it, they only had one account for $1400 settled, and one account in a "structured settlement". I had two other accounts left to settle, but one of those decided to sue me so I had to quit FDR and file for bankruptcy. I had received several notices from a lawyer and passed all of them onto FDR and FDR told me to "ignore them". Needless to say, that led to them suing me. As all of this was happening, I was wondering where all my money was going so I asked FDR for a detailed statement showing where every dollar went, and to my surprise, FDR had collected all of their fees, nearly $8k out of the $14k I had paid in. FDR said I would need to pay more if I wanted to settle the two remaining accounts.
Their scam is to get you started, have you pay for a while, settle one account, then start taking their fee upfront (they will tell you they don't do this when you sign up, but they do), and leaving nothing left of your monthly payment to pay off other accounts... In my case, they took all of their fees in 7 months and left nothing for the other creditors, and then left me in legal jeopardy... Needless to say, I feel it is a breach of contract on FDR 's part, and of course, they will not refund the fees they have basically stolen from me for services they never rendered.
FDR is a scam. My bankruptcy attorney has said many of his clients try these settlement companies first and usually end up in bankruptcy. Do yourself a favor, save your money, and spend it on a bankruptcy attorney. It's safer and cheaper. FDR is pretty much the same as Chapter bankruptcy, except you are still subject to being sued. If you file bankruptcy, the lawsuits stop, your monthly payment will be lower then what FDR charges, or if you're lucky, you might be able to file Chapter 7 and have it all discharged. Either way, both are safer and smarter options than FDR. FDR screwed me and my family, don't let it happen to you to. Talk to an attorney before making a decision to use FDR.

Freedom Debt helped me pay off $71k of debt in 18 mos, restored creditors faith in me, and 6 mos after graduating from their program, I bought a home since my ex got ours in the divorce. Second of all, my experience with your team of experts was not so wonderful, as I was told many different things by several different people. No one was on the same page regarding specific topics. Your negotiators take way too long and drag out the process and I would not recommend you to anyone for this reason. As matter of fact, I have deterred a few people from using you.

We signed up for Freedom Financial to see if we could prevent bankruptcy. We had just moved to TX and still had property in IL that we could not sell and paying for 2 properties almost did us in. We used our credit cards to make ends meet and then we were both working to make payments and never could get caught up. We called and talked to them and they explained how it worked. We decided this would be best route or bankruptcy was in our future. We were able to reduce our debt by considerable amount and faster than anticipated. They said 3 years but it was taken care of in about 1.5 years. Granted it is still affecting our credit but not for much longer and we can deal with that. We have minimal debt and have money to do the extras we never thought we could.

I knew that I would receive a 1099, but I did not receive a notice until April 10, 2013, and my taxes had already been paid. Everyone else has to mail their 1099s by Jan. 31st.

We got out of the program because 4 out of 5 of our creditors would not work with Freedom, and one even took us to court. All in all, the experience ended up costing us more money than if we would have just gone to the bank and got a loan and settled with the companies ourselves in the first place. Also, it took forever to get things completed with Freedom because no one knew what the other one was doing within the same company. So no, we were not in any way, shape, or form, happy with our experience.

We were so far in debt due to having to take a short sale on our home in 2008. Even trying to pay a little extra on our credit card bills didn't help. We were "robbing Peter to pay Paul".
While in AZ for the winter, I was watching the noon news one day and they were interviewing someone from Freedom Debt. I thought, they must be legitimate or the news station wouldn't be interviewing them. I called Freedom and was informed that we did qualify for their program. It was the best thing we have ever done. Yes, it was hard at times. We had to cut up our cards and they took out a payment from our checking account every month. But when we ran into problems, they helped us by letting us pay less for one month and making it up another month. One thing people do not realize, though, is that the money you have saved through Freedom, the government considers it as income. So, for a few years we had to pay the IRS, but boy, was it worth it. My husband and I would highly recommend Freedom Debt.

I received good service throughout my contract with Freedom. They negotiated my accounts down so I had to pay about one third of what I owed. The only problem I had with Freedom was that customer service did not demand a paid in full statement on one my accounts after the account was paid. So that account was never credited to being paid. Freedom Debt Relief did exactly what they said they would do: Get rid of your credit card debt. On the average they saved us about fifty percent overall. The one thing I would warn you about is that the IRS will tax you on any money saved on credit card. If you have a bill for $7000 and Freedom Debt Relief got it down to $3500, the IRS would look at the other $3500 as income that you made. That was in no way Freedom Debt Relief’s fault. They warned us that this would happen. So overall after taxes you save about 40%. The one important thing they do is stop the banks from raising your debt. Once you sign up, there will be no more late fees or interest added to your bills.

Some 20 years ago, I got into a lot of trouble with about 8 credit cards. I had excellent credit and I had about $35000 to spend on the cards. I maxed out most of the cards and with interest was paying just the minimum amount each month on each card. After about 15-20 years of this, I realized I was trapped in debt. It was so easy to get into this. I’d go into a store, buy anything I wanted, slap down the plastic and walk out with just about anything. My interest each month was like 5 car payments. Finally, a friend told me about Freedom Financial. They explained the program, worked with my creditors, and got all my debt down to 1 manageable payment. I was a bit skeptical at first because I thought they would soak me with fees but I was soon surprised how little they asked for this lifesaving program.
After about 4 years, I finally was able to complete the program and pay off my debt. I don’t drink but I went out and had a beer to celebrate. You cannot believe the financial burden that was lifted from my shoulders. The Freedom Financial program gave me a new life. I learned my lesson with credit cards. Never again will I let myself get into that mess. The people I dealt with were so nice and professional. I was always kept up to date on everything and their 800 number always answered my questions. I cannot thank FF enough for what they did and I recommend them most highly to anyone who has a mountain of debt and wants to get out from under it. God bless you FF and I will always remember what you did for me.

The customer service with FDR was phenomenal. From the initial phone inquiry to my very last settlement, I felt like someone was looking out for my best interest. The initial relief came with the cessation of the harassing phone calls and letters. I could relax a little bit knowing they were being directed to and handled by professionals. The entire process took about 2 and a half to 3 years to become completely debt free and it was all completely worth it. I've become much more responsible and have learned that the lack of control is not worth the effort to recover from the damage done. My only concern, whether I was informed by FDR and didn't pay close attention or otherwise, is not being made explicitly aware of the tax repercussions of debt forgiveness. I wasn't prepared for that situation and was a little shocked come tax time when I had to claim the balance difference as income for the year. Overall, though, I couldn't have been happier with the services FDR provided and I'm happy to say I'm on a great track to healthy credit and will never go back to the way it was.

Freedom Financial helped us get out of debt. Anytime I had a question, I would call them and they either reassured me or helped me with whatever it was. On one of our creditors - they went so far as to file in the local district court to sue us - I contacted Freedom and they told us, “Just calm down.” The court sent us a questionnaire from the creditor and Freedom helped us with filling it out; they told us how to answer, or what they were asking for in the questions, and after filling it out and sending it in, the creditor decided to accept an offer from Freedom and not sue us. Being able to answer the phone again was a really nice feeling. If it was a creditor, we had been given instructions on what to tell them, from Freedom. The calls slacked off greatly. I used my own savings to pay. Results: My credit score was reduced by 200 points, which still is at the level; and what savings I did have from paying less was considered income by the IRS, so I had to pay more taxes. FDR informed me that I was done with my payments to Bank of America. However, a few months later, a collection company contacted me in regards to the debt. Apparently, per FDR, there was a "clerical" error in which a payment appeared to Bank of America as having not been made. Although FDR made the claim that this was indeed an error and provided me documentation to show all payments were made, BOA refuses to honor the initial settlement agreement. It seems that FDR does not have to capability to actually communicate with the businesses of the clients in order to rectify situations such as this.
I have spent years battling this, and I still do not know where this case stands. I keep waiting for more letters and calls from collector, not to mention that it continues to hurt my credit score. FDR assigned a person to my "issue", but other than this (this person is unable to accomplish anything since they cannot deal directly with BOA), FDR does not seem to have any action plan in place to resolve a situation such as this. I fulfilled my part of the agreement; I made all my required payments. It aggravates me greatly that FDR has been unable to rectify my situation.

Well, the program "works" as long as you can make it through the whole process. However, if you encounter any issues along the way, it will make your life miserable. Freedom Debt Relief is terrible with details. They will miss most of them and I assure you, it is to your detriment. I had a specific issue where a collector did not take the 1st of 14 payments but took 2-14, and Freedom Debt Relief's only suggestion to me was to re-negotiate the new balance minus the payments I had sent in for 14 months. Freedom Debt Relief has never finished the process with me, although I believe I have been finished with the program for years.
Freedom Debt Relief had no intention of stop drawing money out of my account. At the end, I had to close the account to get them to stop. I have no clue where Freedom Debt Relief has put my escrow balance. I called a total of 15 times over a period of 6 months; I do not think they know where it is either. In short, the program works, but do not expect Freedom Debt Relief to act as your friend, partner, etc. They will cause you misery as you go. I worked with Freedom Debt Relief and was a little hesitant to begin the consolidation process. I had never missed a payment before, but even though I was sending a very high monthly payment to try to pay down my debt, it wasn't working. I weighed the pros and cons and decided that if I was serious about getting out of debt, then I needed help. It was a little stressful to receive calls from creditors, but being able to give Freedom's info helped. Knowing that I was doing something was better than feeling like I was never going to get out of debt.
I began putting the high monthly payment into my Freedom account and was able to finish the program even faster than the 3-year time estimate they had given me. I liked that there was flexibility in being able to pay more than my monthly minimum and also being able to change dates, etc. Also, because I was putting additional money into the account, I had more in there than what my settlement actually ended up being. Freedom returned the extra money in a timely manner and I had no issues with getting the automatic withdrawal to stop after I completed the program. There was no runaround during any point in the process.
I was very pleased with Freedom and as long as you know what to expect with debt settlement (creditor calls, temporarily lowering your rate scores, etc.), then I recommend that you "walk through the fire" to get yourself out of debt. I'm happy to say that I don't use credit cards anymore and I definitely owe that to Freedom Debt Relief.

So again, they didn't do anything to help us. They had no problem taking the money and were supposed to give us back money for not meeting their settlement agreement promise. I could have done what they did because they did nothing for us. I ended up filing bankruptcy after the mess FDR left us in, not to mention $7,000 poorer. Pay as much as possible in the beginning. Pay above the monthly payment. I wished I would have paid it off earlier. Visit your online account, both Freedom Debt Relief and the participating Global Bank. Lastly, stay on top of your paperwork and do not assume anything. Although I did all of the negotiation, I still had to pay FF a percentage of the settlement. I had a Chase card that I was able to settle for less than what FF could and again, I still had to pay them a percentage. I learned so much and now am a better negotiator myself and have been debt-free (other than my car and my mortgage) for going on a year. I deal with cash, and I wait if I want something until I can pay for it. And compounding is great when it is working for you rather than for the credit card companies! God bless Freedom Debt Relief - I would recommend them to anyone who needs this kind of help.

Hi, please don't take this as a knock on Freedom Debt Relief. But unless you have a really compelling reason to save your credit rating, I would urge you to declare bankruptcy. Freedom did everything they claimed and the people were really nice. But today, with another year and a half of paying a third of my pay every month, I wish I'd taken advantage of the laws on bankruptcy. I know it's my debt and I deserve to pay it. But when my tax dollars go to bail out the "Too Big to Fail" folks, that fact loses its strength. Anyway, that would be my advice, take it or leave it. God bless!

It's a double edged sword. On one hand, you are getting your debt paid off with lower payments each month and in less time, but on the other hand, your credit is going to crap. At first, you are making payments to Freedom but they are being saved up in a special account, while you pay their fees. Then more is being saved up so they can make an "offer" to pay off each credit card starting with the lowest first. In all this time, payments are not being made to the credit cards and you are being marked down as not making payments, so your good credit is gone. Even though when it's all said and done, you don't have any more credit card debt, you have horrible credit. And the payments lasted a whole year longer than what they told me it would. I would never tell anyone to get rid of their credit in this way. It's worse in the long run.

I was interviewed by a gentleman who asked me a few questions. I was embarrassed by the amount that I and my husband were in debt for with the charge cards, even though I did not let him know this. He made me feel at ease and told me that Freedom Debt Relief would be able to help us and proceeded to tell me how this could be accomplished. We weren't sure if this was true at first because the debtor kept calling us, making us feel we would be in a lot of trouble if we didn't make arrangement to pay them right then and there. But we followed the written instructions that Freedom provided us, when they did call and kept a log of who and when those calls where made. One by one the calls began to stop.
Freedom made it clear that when we felt overwhelmed, we were to call them. I believe I only called them one time. Freedom did what they said they would do and I set aside a certain amount each month (which was a lot less than the amounts I would have paid to each account I owed) and had it taken out automatically. When the debt was finally paid, Freedom sent us an email informing us that we were debt-free! I just broke down and started crying. To anyone reading this that believes there is no way out, I am here to tell you - yes, there is. Freedom will work with you and in return, all you have to do is follow their instructions and you will become debt-free.

It was a good lesson that I learned from Freedom Debt Relief. A few years ago, I owed over $35,000 for credit cards. Every time, when I received the credit cards statement, I always pay on time and a little more than what the limited ask. I was so worried when I would finish the payment 5, 10 years or more until I heard from the radio for Debt Relief phone number. I called to find out if it's true. Fifteen months later, I paid off my credit card bills that I owed and learned so many lessons from Freedom Debt Relief. Now, I do not own any credit cards because I tried not to and just kept one for emergency use. I also try not to buy things that are not important. Also, I learned how to manage my expenses. Most important is giving them a call to ask questions. All the agents are willing to give you great advice. Thanks, Freedom Debt Relief.

Freedom Financial helped me pay off all of my credit cards! It was painless and the time it took flew by. In the beginning, it seemed like it was going to take forever. It was not long before things started to happen and I was able to see my debt shrinking. The folks that work at Freedom Financial were helpful, knowledgeable, patient and did I say helpful? The amount of money that it took to pay off all of my debt was less than what we expected it to be, worst case scenario in the beginning. Someone worked with me initially to decide on how much money I could afford to set aside each month to build my payoff account, which was way less than all of my credit card bills combined, so I could afford to do this. I paid into my account each month. The money grew there (and paid them for the service) and very soon I was settling with my first credit card company. The day I settled the last card was very nearly the exact time they told me it would probably take to complete the program.

They wanted to settle for $1500 in three installment payments. I e-mailed Freedom and told them to go ahead. No one called back. I realized they want the $3,000 fee for the 36 months I would be enrolled in the program - not cool! I cancelled my account and they refunded my $1,900 to my account within two days. This idiot (me) heard about "Freedom Financial" on Dr. Michael Savage's radio show, so I thought it was trustworthy. Big mistake. I signed up in August 2009, owing about $35,000 in various unsecured and/or high interest loans. Freedom Financial and its various mutations, including Alliance 8, did actually pay off one of my loans ... after charging me $606 for a year and a half - almost as much as I was paying out to begin with. Then I got $2000 more on top of that. They did nothing more. I was taken to court by one of my debtors in July 2011. They offered no support, assistance, or advice. They didn't do anything about the debt either. I kind of knew I'd been had for sure when they stopped answering their telephones. Dealing with this company was the biggest mistake I ever made. My credit score is ruined, and I'm still trying to get everything paid off - which has typically meant putting the debt on my only functioning credit card or taking money from my retirement plan to pay it off. Dealing with Freedom Financial turned my financial situation into a nightmare, a disaster, a catastrophe. I wish there were some recourse against them. I'd certainly avail my self of it.

My husband had credit card debt from a previous marriage, $62,587. We were paying extra on the cards to try to pay them down, but the credit cards jacked up the interest rates so it was impossible to even make the minimum payment. We contacted FDR. They claimed they could reduce the debt to $37,816 and our monthly payment would be $945 for 40 months and "then we would be debt-free". Our first payment was made on June 20, 2008. We continued to make every payment until 3/12/2010, 21 payments x $945 = $19,845. For what? I don't know. We stopped the program on 3/12/10 when we were served with arbitration papers for one of the creditors FDR showed as "in active negotiations".
Prior to stopping the program, I contacted FDR. First response was, the "Legal Account Resolution Unit" would get back to us. When I received the response from this unit, the response was - "You will need to file a response or answer to the lawsuit filed against you. If you do not, a default judgment may be issued in your creditor's favor. I am enclosing a blank example answer form for your review, which may help you with the form of an answer. Since I am not licensed to practice law, I cannot assist you in the completion of this answer. I have provided you with an informational packet regarding filing an answer." No help. At that point, we contacted a lawyer to file for bankruptcy in March 2010.
Despite paying a retainer, multiple follow ups and updated information provided over the last 2 years, our file hasn't moved forward with an official filing. Since then, the original lawyer transferred our file and retainer to another legal office and now we have to start all over again with the paperwork. How can these companies continue to scam people and we have no recourse against them, when all we are trying to do is pay our bills? What did they do with the $19,000 we paid? Meanwhile, the credit card totals keep growing since nothing has been paid on them and the interest and penalties keep being added. Please, please don't be scammed by these people. I should have trusted my intuition, knowing deep down it was probably too good to be true. We were just trying to do the right thing.

So far, I've had three of my creditors issue court summons and have been asked to fork over tons of extra $ to the so-called "get the negotiations under way". Three of my creditors continue to add late fees & interest charges resulting in twice the debt that I entered the program with. Their so-called “advanced collections department” just sits back to wait & see if an attorney enters the scene before they even call your creditors to explain that you are in their program. Only after you have been served do they attempt to do anything! I'll probably end up paying 2 or 3 times the debt that I first enrolled & paying this debt the rest of my life. I absolutely discourage anyone from entering this program. All this has accomplished is stress, forking over tons more $, and increased debt due to their lack of contact with any of the creditors until you are served. Do not enter this program!

I called them immediately to try and adjust monthly payments because at that time, I was not sure what my unemployment would be. I was told that I would not be successful in the program if I could not pay the $939.00 that was set up. They continued to draw on my bank account knowing I had no income, causing me multiple overdrafts. The only solution I had was to close the bank account.
I am consulting with an attorney to file a lawsuit because they have $9,000 of my money and to my knowledge, they have paid no creditors. I have been working with creditors on my own and find them to be very reasonable and willing to work with me. I signed up in September 2008. To this day, I'm still paying when I was told 3 years and we are done. I called today and they still haven't spoken to a company that I owe because they need more funds in the account to start talking to them, maybe next month. Plus, some accounts have had over $2,000.00 added to them in fees. So when they pay them, they claim that they saved me 50% on the bill when it's on about 25% from the original bill. Plus, they received almost $4,000.00 to handle the accounts while I'm getting my credit destroyed longer. So this one account, when paid, will take 7 more years to clear on the credit report. It will take me 11 years to get good credit again. What's amazing is that there's a lawsuit against them from last October. The class action is nowhere to be found or heard of. So my debt of $24,000.00, which they say would save me $10,000.00, really only saved me about $3,000.00 so far with one account left. Never use them.
