About Freedom Debt Relief

Freedom Debt Relief is a nationwide debt relief company that provides debt settlement services and education. The company requires applicants to have at least $7,500 of unsecured debt. Its fees vary by location and range from 15% to 25%, depending on the state where the client lives and the amount of debt they enroll. Though user credit suffers in the short term, Freedom Debt Relief’s credit score impact study, which was updated in 2022, found that most customers saw credit score recovery in 36 to 45 months.

    Pros & Cons

    Pros

    • No fees until settlement reached, authorized by client
    • Has resolved over $15 billion in debt in 20-plus years
    • Works with high debt amounts
    • Long-term credit recovery

    Cons

    • Fees up to 25% of settlement amount
    • Short-term impact on credit

    Bottom Line

Freedom Debt Relief is a good match for those with $7,500 or more in debt. Although its fees can range up to 25% of the settlement amount, fees are only collected when a settlement is authorized and a payment is made toward that settlement.

After my complaint to the Better Business Bureau, about the fees and misrepresentation of my accounts, I was told to settle the complaint that my final account would be taken care of. I would no longer have to have any more draft amounts come out of my account. I had called to see the status of this account and I get told I have to come up with the money to settle this account. This is after the lady admitted to me that the customer service person misspoke, and she also said that I had enough in the account to pay off the account, at the time the customer service had told me. The other issue I have with this company is that I am being sued by one of my accounts. I was told that if I came up with 500.00 and they would speed the process to come up with a settlement. Well I got court papers and in and out of court, no thanks to the help of Debt Freedom Financial. They do like taking money for settling your accounts 25% of the settle amount so beware to who is going to use this service.

I happened to see a representative for Freedom Debt on the show Good Morning America and I felt if they was on a show like that they had to be reputable. I called them Sept 2010 and was finished with my plan Feb 2013. They represent those in debt in a way that no other can. They handle the creditors as well as legal threats. I can truly say I am very pleased with the outcome. I was close to $30,000 in debt and when I was done with the program I was completely debt free. Not owing a single creditor.

Along with being in the plan I've learned to buy with cash determined to stay debt free. It also help one to see that we usually buy out of want not out of need because I made it for 3 years without one single credit card. My biggest advice to those who enroll in the plan MUST stick with it. You will do more harm than good if you don't stick with it. And I will say it get rough at times with the creditors calling but it will soon fade away because Freedom Debt representatives will be doing all the work for you. They will be your own personal spokes person. I can't thank them enough for freeing me up from debt. It feel's great. Thanks again Freedom Debt.

When I enrolled in this program I felt the world had been lifted off my shoulders and I would within two years be debt-free. Early into the program, I was sued by a creditor and after being told when I signed up the FDR would pay for my attorney to represent me in court, they told me that was MY responsibility. So in a panic to attempt a lawsuit, I withdrew my retirement to pay toward the debt program to expedite settlements. After providing them an additional 10,000.00 on top of the 6,000.00 that I had already paid in, and being told on four different occasions that all my accounts had been settled and I would be receiving about 70.00 in return/overage that I had paid in, when I called to cancel and get out of the program, they now tell me I owe them 3000.00 more dollars.

Not only can they not explain why I have been told different things from different people, they cannot provide me with a break down of where all this money I paid in went and how it was spent. I see no end in sight. First I would be done in October, then it was November, now it May....I don't understand how people can be so irresponsible in their jobs and not have documentation to show what they do, but yet turn it around on the customer saying it is their fault and one customer service rep even said "You should have never run your debt up and you should have been more responsible." Please help this is not fair and I am sure if it is happening to me it has happened to millions of others!

I have been with FDR for 2 years now. I had 6 accounts with a total of $16,000 in debt. In 2 years they have only gotten it down to 50%, so if you're looking for a quick turnaround time you will have to pour a lot of money at them. They don't tell you which debt they will work on first until it's already ready to be resolved, which can be good and bad. You don't get periodic updates about accounts and payments unless you miss one ;). The site information is not always updated and is very vague when it comes to where your account status really is. All in all I can say that it stops the annoying creditor calls and you can have a set payment for a while. But if you are not credit savvy and have no time to waste, I would suggest shopping around before making a decision to use them. Slow but effective.

I have a 3 to 4 year plan with them. I'm a year in and they settled 2 accounts. They’re actually making payments on them. The one they’re making same payment amount I was but for a lesser final amount owed, same with the other one. I was just issued papers to be sued on one account and just called and settled it myself. One of the accounts stated above that they took care of I was going to be sued by also. Reading the bad reviews have me worried now. Has anybody ever called and just canceled the program?? The 2 accounts they are working with I could just call and take them back over myself. So far it hasn't been bad experience. Just doesn't seem with what I'm paying it will work out in the end.

Remember the saying that if something sounds too good to be true it's beware. Like most people the economic system of this time has caused a lot of good people in very poor financial straits. I was referred to FDR by a "friend". There is a big difference between marketing and customer service. Marketing (Sales Reps). Marketing will tell you anything except the pitfalls of the plan. Then when something doesn't work right Customer Service is right there on the phone explaining where you went wrong. It doesn't matter that you were not told the whole story of the plan. These reps seemed to be reading from a script and not listening to anything that you as a customer have to say. There are quite a few good reviews for FDR and I am very glad to know that some people have been greatly helped. I find myself in worse financial straits than before. Final words, please make sure you understand completely what you are getting yourself involved in before agreeing to have them represent you.

I am happy that I do not owe any organization right now. Thanks to FDR. It wasn't a very easy path but I am happy and relieved that I went through and it's over with. I did have my reservations about some of the customer service personnel I speak to during the course of the period I was enrolled in the program. Some of them make you think that you need them more than they need you and if you don't like it, you're doomed on top of your "sorry situation" in which you already are. No, no one said that to me directly but that is how I felt speaking to at least a few.

I have been with this company for years now. I have never missed or been late on a payment. When you join this company, you pay them a large fee to negotiate settlements for you. They are supposed to contact you when settlements have been made and update the website where it shows you the amount you have in your account, resolved and active negotiations, and your progress in becoming debt free. This information is not updated monthly, the amounts of savings, debts remaining, and even resolutions have not been accurate on my account.

When I contacted customer service, I was informed that I owed an additional $1500 that my statement did not show. I was treated as if I was the crazy one to be upset by this information. I was even disconnected at one point. I was contacted by a Vice President of Customer Service. He informed me that the website statement was inaccurate and I did, in fact, owe the additional $1500. Now it's months later. I continue to contact the agency to inform them of the website not being updated to show accurate information. I continue to make my monthly payments on time. I am now to the point where if I make another payment, I will be paying over my debt amount that shows on the website.

I have contacted the Vice President of customer service once again to obtain an answer to when I will be done and if a resolution to my final debt has been made. I have contacted him 3 times concerning this issue. Each time I contact him, he continues to give me different dates in which he will have an answer. He has not met this final date he gave me and now I have another automatic payment coming out of my account. I am over by several months of the initial date they have given me to be debt free. I am not sure why I am begging a company to do the services in which I have paid them. I have held up my end by making every single payment in time. I do not think it is too much to ask for a company to follow through with services.

If you are planning on joining this debt relief plan, please choose a different company. I have had nothing but a horrible experience. I would say you do become debt free, but I have yet to experience this. It's sad to think I have taken ownership for my debt, took steps to resolve the debt and pay back creditors, and the company I hired to help me is not.

I joined this program in 2009 to try and resolve our debt - we went in with $12,000 in debt and came out with $27,000 in debt. Two accounts were settled- (which we had to pay IRS fees on as income and we were actually having our wages garnished for a few of these creditors.) They just took our money and only contacted one of our creditors in 18 months. I would like a full refund of any monies paid as we had to pay 2000 dollars to file bankruptcy anyways and it ruined our credit. I did contact the companies on our so-called account with Freedom Debt Relief and at the time we cancelled account. Not one had been contacted by them except one. I feel this was a scam. I did contact Freedom Financial directly and they said they would look into but I really hope to be refunded.

We were enrolled in FDR's for 15 months. I had 8 accounts to settle. They settled 4 of them, and I settle the other 4 on my own and save a lot of money in settlement fees. I've got 6 more payments to pay on my last settlement. Yes FDR started me on the road to getting out of bad debt. Now I’m trying to repair my credit for not calling my credits myself. And no delaying payments to them. The 30, 60, 90, 120 day lates are a lot of red flags on my credit reports. That are a lot harder to get off of them than paying the credit cards off.

Customer service is a joke. You cannot even speak to anybody who tries to make the settlements for you with the credit card companies. I would never endorse you guys and never should have used you in the first place. I had to get angry with the last customer service agent to get something to happen. It said my last company was settled in an e-mail to me and then it was not settled. I chewed this guy out and lo and behold, it was settled shortly later.

I was sued by a creditor and they basically said oh well, but they could set me up with a lawyer for an additional $500.00. Now I am at risk of losing everything I had to pay off this debt because Freedom did NOTHING for me, except take ALL my accounts and make them 3 months past due when most of them were current!! We had to remember to stay frugal and keep on our goal. When we needed help, we called. The people on the other end of the phone always had the right answer. We were kept informed about pay-offs and we met our goal in about 4 years. After more than a year now, we are still out of debt. We have a credit card but use it careful and keep balance down or at zero. Thanks for all you did in working with our creditors and getting us where we are today.

I have been enrolled in the program for 43 months and there is no end in sight. It was supposed to be finished in May 2012 and no one can give me a reason why one account's settlement fell through. I only had two accounts to start with. I have made repeated calls and was told the account would "be escalated" which promised a call back within 2 business days. Seven weeks later, no return call. I have made timely payments for 43 months, which is ironic because these payments do not count with the credit bureaus and improve my credit score. I should have taken care of it myself. I paid Freedom a huge fee up front for very poor customer service and very little else in return.

Back in November 2012, I called Freedom Debt Relief to set up payments. On March 7, I received a settlement offer for my card. On March 8, they recovered another settlement offer agreement. I found out that they backed out of one agreement. On May 2, I called them up to ask why there was no payment made on one account. They gave me a check number, but Capital One had no record of it. I kept calling back for one week, and they never gave me an answer why there was no payment. On May 10, I called to get out of the program. I called Capital One and six other accounts. They gave me the same deal that they gave Freedom Debt, which was 50 percent off balance. I called Citibank and I owed $11,000 on the account. They settled with me for $2,600. That would have been freedom debt settlement that they get before payment is made. They get 23% of your balance.

Overall, I'd recommend Freedom Debt Relief. They did exactly what they said they would do, that is, set up a program to eradicate my debt in 36 months while handling the communication with my creditors. What I found out after I completed the program is that my credit worthiness was restored rather quickly. That's an important thing to share with those considering debt solutions. If there is one thing that could have improved my experience, it would be communication related to milestones achieved during the program. For example, when I learned one of my creditors was near settlement, I asked when to expect another creditor to do the same. To my surprise, the other creditor in question had already settled. I hadn't been made aware of that. Besides this example, I was left to figure out some nuances during the course of the program that I felt should have been explained to me. In the end, however, the program was effective and worked very well for me. I'm glad I chose this course of action for my credit debt problems.

The service was always there when I needed them and they worked to resolve my debts. There was one last debt I was getting ready to go to court to settle. The service worked with the bank and they cancelled the debt. The only thing I had trouble with was several of the debts that were paid off were turned into the IRS and I had to pay a good bit of income tax on them. That was difficult. The service fee I paid them was worth every penny. I am now debt-free.

He called back 3 times because he knew I was in trouble. The last time he asked me to just listen to him, and I realized he was right and I was wrong. My high credit rate was not going to help me because I had so many credit cards - all I did was just pay the minimum. I was going in a circle to nowhere. I signed on and Freedom Debt Relief guided me back from debt.

I came to Freedom Financial in 2008. The economy was doing badly, and I had over $71,000 in credit card debt owed to 4 different accounts. Within 8 months, I had received an email of congratulations for my first account being settled for approximately 64% of its value. The next account was more aggressive, and about 6 months after my first settlement, I was being threatened with being dragged into court. I was even served papers. Your company was unable to help. At the time, I felt this was a failure on your part as I was looking to your company for help in my financial strife. As time went on, I learned that you are limited by laws in what you can do. What was a failure, however, was your lack of ability to give me advice or knowledge in regards to events like this. A little pre-warning and preparation could have prevented lots of problems for me. As it was, I was forced to get a loan in order to pay off the second account and stay out of court... At this point, your company began to fail even more in my case in regards to customer service.

You will recall that early on I had mentioned that your company sent me an email of congratulations with the first account settled and that I had to get a loan to settle my second account myself. There was no acknowledgement of that account being successfully settled. Since it had caused me quite a bit of stress, I really wanted some form of confirmation from somebody that, yes, this was done. But alas, no. Also, with the first account, I received an email and a phone call letting me know that I was now in a structured settlement deal so I would not have the option of deferring a payment if I had money issues one month.

I realize that with the second account, I had to be more involved because of the aggressive nature of the creditor. However, I felt as if I was out in the cold by myself. With no email, I had to call and check status. There was not even an email of congratulations when the second account was done. Then, in December of 2010, I attempted to defer a payment and was politely informed that I could not because I was in a structured settlement. That's fine, I said, how long have I been in this structured settlement? 6 months, I was told.

Where was the email? No notification at all! That account is settled and, again, no congratulatory email. Fast forward to December 2011 and I once again attempt to defer a payment. Again, I cannot because I am in a structured settlement. Again, no email notifying me. That was the fourth and final account. After that, I received congratulatory emails and a printed copy of all the settlement letters and a refund of money that I didn't know I had, which, by the way, information needs to be a little more freely given and almost pushed on your clients. Had I not asked the correct questions, you would have continued with the monthly draft removal from my checking even though all my debts were settled.

Your clients MUST be made aware of the I.R.S. and it's attitude towards "forgiven debt", I must tell you that was quite a shock. Overall... Your company delivered on its promise to me. I went from an astounding $71,000 worth of credit card debt to being debt-free in just over 3 and 1/2 years. Where the frustration lies for me is in the exchange of information. The feeling that I was alone in all that, then your company is there promising to be there with me... and then I am feeling alone in my fight again. A little stronger customer support maybe?

They tell you to quit making payments to creditors, you fall delinquent (which I already was). They set up an account for you in which you deposit funds where part of the funds is a fee for them, then they haggle with the creditors on how much you can pay. All of my accounts except 1, started at 7k and ended at 13k. I was taken to court, sued, and FDR did not help me. I was on my own. Then a few months ago, I got a letter for a class action lawsuit stating that FDR is wrongfully collecting fees. Don't use them.

The long-term costs involved with participating in a program with Freedom Debt Relief are not justified. Becoming involved with other banks and financial entities that were required as part of the program presented a lot of hidden costs. But by far, the worst is the lack of information about charged-off amounts being reported as income on a 1099-C, and then being forced to pay about 50% tax to State and Federal on those amounts. The charged-off amounts were mostly for late fees, penalties, and interest that were charged 'after' becoming a program member, and could have been avoided by settling outstanding balances sooner. When asking FDR for assistance with all of the additional taxes from the 1099-C's (which I never saw because the forms were sent to FDR), I was told I would have to start a new program and pay even more money to FDR. I am sorry to say this but I looked to FDR to help me out of a difficult situation and instead, I feel like I was just taken advantage of.

I contacted FDR today and was highly dissatisfied when I found out that they are exceeding the 21% settlement fee as promised. Although the fee will balance in the end to equal 21%, they are YTD at 58% going to FDR fees instead of the settle to the debtor which is only at 42% of total payments. They have depleted all funds deposited made into the reserve savings account with crossroads to pay their fees first. By depleting the account and taking more than the 21% as agreed, they have been a contributing factor in jeopardizing the payment of the settlement to the debtor. As a debt management company, they should maintain enough funds in the reserve savings account to ensure the next payment on the settlement is able to be made on time.

As the client, I have had to suspend one month of my payment to plan for a funeral for my sister. Although I anticipated enough funds in the account to pay the settlement payment, the 58% that was taken out exceeds the 21% allowed for fees. As a debt management company, they should know better enough not to deplete the entire account especially when they are depleting it to pay themselves instead of the settlement debtor. I contacted them to inform them of this and they didn't care to assist. They kept telling me that if I cannot make my payment to the settlement, then I would negate the settlement terms.

So I told them I can make the settlement payment as agreed of $100, but couldn't pay the $240 in FDR fees. They told me that if I didn't pay both, it would violate the settlement with the debtor. I then asked if I can contact the debtor and arrange a payment with them directly to ensure I was not in default with the settlement. They told me I couldn't. They are the debt management company and are not willing to postpone their fees to honor the settlement agreement. I could understand if they didn't want to if they weren't getting their 21% already; however, they have already taken 58% YTD of the total settlement payments. This is an unacceptable business practice.

Working with Freedom Debt was overall not too bad. They did cut our monthly payment from $600 a month to $200, which helped us get caught up after a very hard year with family situations. The only downfall for us is one of the creditors that were submitted to the program, who we were told not to talk with and to stop paying, ended up taking us to court! So after the first 3 months, we were back to paying $400 a month total since we were paying Freedom and then also the judgment against us, which is still on my husband's credit report. The other creditors dealt with the program much better. Overall, we were mostly satisfied.

They also will put a chart on the computer for you to follow to see which creditor was completed. Give your debts to them and they take the problems of all the creditors calling you and a monthly amount according to your budget a month, so you are able to feel some type of relief while going through this process. I was glad to have gotten my debts paid. But Freedom Financial caused me more stress than I was already under. My first settlement was paid late, hence sent back from the creditor, and I had to pay $800 more to settle on the debt. Freedom did nothing to help with this cost! This was Freedom's mistake, NOT mine! There were several other issues with my accounts. During my enrollment with Freedom, I came into a small sum of money. I paid Freedom a $12,000 chunk of money to help settle my debts and it was such a headache dealing with customer care people that didn't even know how to answer my questions or they didn't know what they were doing. I even had a care rep yell at me and he was very rude during the call.

I honestly would never refer my friends or family to this company after the mess I had to deal with on top of being stressed out about getting my bills paid off in a TIMELY manner. I am still upset that Freedom cost me an extra $800 for not paying my debtors on time, and not once did any supervisors offer to cover that cost since it was Freedom's fault, nor did any supervisors return calls to resolve the issues I had. They would call once and say they would call back to straighten everything out and then nothing. Honestly, if this is how this company works, I don't know how you are keeping customers. I was really very dissatisfied with how I was treated and how my money was handled.

This is to inform you about the horrible services or lack thereof from Freedom Debt Relief. They misrepresented my account and were negligent in following through to resolve my last and final debt. Also in reviewing and investigating this matter, it appears that one of their representatives fraudulently forged my husband's signature on a section of the contract. Since I have brought this information to their attention, they have done nothing to resolve this matter. They have not answered any of my questions to my satisfaction. They have also not provided me supporting documents or information to disprove my allegations. In March 2010, we went to Freedom Debt Relief for assistance. My husband experienced a partial layoff and we had a serious family illness. Unfortunately, that was all it took to create a financial crisis for our family.

Freedom was there to assure us that we could get through this and that they would work to completely eliminate our debt in approximately 3 to 3 1/2 years. We jumped in wholeheartedly wanting to get out from under where we were. We set a budget and agreed that we would place $875 in a trust account for Freedom to start working towards eliminating our debt. The contract indicated that the approximate end date was 8/13. The initial representative that I spoke to at Freedom assured me that it would be about 3 years; however, they always list an additional 6 months. This was fine, their initial speech about what they could do for us, and how informed and educated they seemed regarding debt and credit issues, gave us a more relaxed perspective. We saw a light at the end of the tunnel.

Through the course of them working to eliminate our debt, there were small little issues that I had encountered with Freedom and things that they would advise me. I had one account removed as they had done nothing on it either. I made payment arrangements on my own with that creditor but it sat for over a year of them doing nothing. My monthly draft changed to $794 a month as a result. Freedom being an authority on debt relief, I of course assumed that they were being on the up and up. They had an answer to everything. In investigating them a little more thoroughly, they are just a company that misleads and misinforms their customers.

Let's fast forward to December of 2012. Knowing that all but one account (Bank of America) had been resolved, I contacted Freedom Debt relief via email for a status update. Keep in mind their contract indicates that they will keep us reasonably informed. (They had never extended any type of information for this account.) I received an email a few days later and here is a clip of the email I received: Unfortunately, Bank of America is not willing to accept any offers from us on the account. Our only move at this point will be to wait them out until they start accepting offers from us again or until the account is transferred to a third party collection agency... This was in December, almost 3 years after we set up an account with Freedom Debt Relief.

In February of 2013, I contacted Bank of America regarding the account as I know I have about $8,000 in my trust account. I am advised by Bank of America that there had been no attempts or contact made by Freedom Debt Relief to work towards a settlement for this account. None! I immediately contacted Freedom Debt Relief to question this information as well as find out why they were dragging out another settlement on another one of my accounts. There were sufficient funds in my trust account to pay off the remaining balance. I requested to know the times, dates and names of the person that they had contacted at Bank of America. I was not given an answer to this. Instead, I was given this information once again: Unfortunately, Bank of America is not willing to accept any offers from us on the account. Our only move at this point will be to wait them out until they start accepting offers from us again or until the account is transferred to a third party collection agency.

Here is the most frustrating part. Bank of America had already discharged the account (1099c). The actual 1099c is dated on 12/31/13 (of course, the end of the year for tax purposes). Bank of America sent the actual intent to discharge in June of 2012. JUNE! Had Freedom Debt Relief really contacted Bank of America in December and February when I inquired as to the status, they would have known that this account was already a 1099c status. They did nothing on this account and let it sit for 3 years. Not only that. This account could have been done and closed out in July of 2012. The monthly amount that they draft for my trust account could have been ceased back then. My family could have been living a little easier had this happened. It is clear that Freedom did not work in my best interest. $794 a month may not be much to some but it would have helped us tremendously.

I finally received some answers. I spoke to a representative at Freedom by the name of Elbia (maybe Elvia). She confirmed that they let it sit for 3 years. She advised me that per their records in my file, there was an attempt made on 5/23/10 with Bank of America. There was not another attempt made until February of this year (2013). Only after I became more aggressive with them, did they finally actually contact Bank of America. By then, I had already done my own research and investigation on this matter. Bank of America confirmed to me that Freedom had not made any attempts to resolve the account. Bank of America discharged/wrote off the account in June of 2012. I find that funny how Bank of America advised me of this and yet Freedom was still telling me that Bank of America was not willing to accept offers. Freedom had absolutely no clue as to the status on the account and didn't contact them as they claimed.

I then dealt with a Lead Representative at Freedom by the name of Kim **. She never returned my call when she advised me that she would. She of course tried to back pedal Freedom's side of the story as I had requested to receive either a refund on the fees that they acquired as a result of this account, or proof that they spoke to Bank of America as they indicated. I wanted them to validate their side of the story. They would not give me that information. They continued to tell me that it was possible that it had not been documented in the file but that they had worked on the account. How can you state you worked on something and then not be able to provide proof? They did absolutely nothing to resolve this account and they did not deserve to retain their fee for this account.

Ms. ** has handled this in a very poor manner. She did not follow through as she said she would. Her return response never happens as she says it will. Service is beyond bad. No one can seem to give you any type of answers to your questions. They always try to duck and cover when you ask them a direct question. They also respond with completely different information than what you ask. Ms. ** was very rude and unprofessional. Her only response was that Freedom's contract was solid and basically too bad. They don't really care about providing the service that they promise. All they really care about is taking your money first and upfront. Once they have your money, forget any service or assistance.

To date, I have not yet received a return call from Ms. ** regarding a FORGED signature on my contract as well as an update regarding a refund of fees. Someone at Freedom fraudulently signed my husband's name on a section of their contract. This was determined only as a result of Ms. ** forwarding me their copy of the contract to review fees. The contract that I signed and faxed to Freedom does not have this signature. If you review the entire contract, you will clearly see that my husband's signature does not match that one signature. It is a blatant forgery. My friend who is an attorney and helping me with this matter has actually referred me to a friend of his who is a contract attorney.

I have tried to resolve this matter and spent pretty close to a month in dealing with Freedom to no avail. This is not acceptable to me. They prey on people who are desperate and in need of assistance and then basically screw them over for thousands of dollars. We went to Freedom and in good faith stuck to our side of the program. Freedom failed miserably with our final account. They did nothing to resolve it and got caught doing nothing about it. They did not work in good faith for their client/customer.

I am not being unreasonable and I am not asking for more than what is fair. It's really simple. Freedom did not provide the service on that account that they should have therefore do not deserve the fee they retained for it. I will continue to file a complaint and grievance with every available outlet regarding Freedom's business practices, lack of service, misrepresentation, fraud and forgery. This will include Media, BBB, Internet, etc. I already have been consulting with an attorney regarding this matter.

After two years working with FDR and $14,000 paid into it, they only had one account for $1400 settled, and one account in a "structured settlement". I had two other accounts left to settle, but one of those decided to sue me so I had to quit FDR and file for bankruptcy. I had received several notices from a lawyer and passed all of them onto FDR and FDR told me to "ignore them". Needless to say, that led to them suing me. As all of this was happening, I was wondering where all my money was going so I asked FDR for a detailed statement showing where every dollar went, and to my surprise, FDR had collected all of their fees, nearly $8k out of the $14k I had paid in. FDR said I would need to pay more if I wanted to settle the two remaining accounts.

Their scam is to get you started, have you pay for a while, settle one account, then start taking their fee upfront (they will tell you they don't do this when you sign up, but they do), and leaving nothing left of your monthly payment to pay off other accounts... In my case, they took all of their fees in 7 months and left nothing for the other creditors, and then left me in legal jeopardy... Needless to say, I feel it is a breach of contract on FDR 's part, and of course, they will not refund the fees they have basically stolen from me for services they never rendered.

FDR is a scam. My bankruptcy attorney has said many of his clients try these settlement companies first and usually end up in bankruptcy. Do yourself a favor, save your money, and spend it on a bankruptcy attorney. It's safer and cheaper. FDR is pretty much the same as Chapter bankruptcy, except you are still subject to being sued. If you file bankruptcy, the lawsuits stop, your monthly payment will be lower then what FDR charges, or if you're lucky, you might be able to file Chapter 7 and have it all discharged. Either way, both are safer and smarter options than FDR. FDR screwed me and my family, don't let it happen to you to. Talk to an attorney before making a decision to use FDR.

Your negotiators take way too long and drag out the process and I would not recommend you to anyone for this reason. As matter of fact, I have deterred a few people from using you.

We signed up for Freedom Financial to see if we could prevent bankruptcy. We had just moved to TX and still had property in IL that we could not sell and paying for 2 properties almost did us in. We used our credit cards to make ends meet and then we were both working to make payments and never could get caught up. We called and talked to them and they explained how it worked. We decided this would be best route or bankruptcy was in our future. We were able to reduce our debt by considerable amount and faster than anticipated. They said 3 years but it was taken care of in about 1.5 years. Granted it is still affecting our credit but not for much longer and we can deal with that. We have minimal debt and have money to do the extras we never thought we could.

I knew that I would receive a 1099, but I did not receive a notice until April 10, 2013, and my taxes had already been paid. Everyone else has to mail their 1099s by Jan. 31st.

We were so far in debt due to having to take a short sale on our home in 2008. Even trying to pay a little extra on our credit card bills didn't help. We were "robbing Peter to pay Paul".

While in AZ for the winter, I was watching the noon news one day and they were interviewing someone from Freedom Debt. I thought, they must be legitimate or the news station wouldn't be interviewing them. I called Freedom and was informed that we did qualify for their program. It was the best thing we have ever done. Yes, it was hard at times. We had to cut up our cards and they took out a payment from our checking account every month. But when we ran into problems, they helped us by letting us pay less for one month and making it up another month. One thing people do not realize, though, is that the money you have saved through Freedom, the government considers it as income. So, for a few years we had to pay the IRS, but boy, was it worth it. My husband and I would highly recommend Freedom Debt.

Freedom Debt Relief did exactly what they said they would do: Get rid of your credit card debt. On the average they saved us about fifty percent overall. The one thing I would warn you about is that the IRS will tax you on any money saved on credit card. If you have a bill for $7000 and Freedom Debt Relief got it down to $3500, the IRS would look at the other $3500 as income that you made. That was in no way Freedom Debt Relief’s fault. They warned us that this would happen. So overall after taxes you save about 40%. The one important thing they do is stop the banks from raising your debt. Once you sign up, there will be no more late fees or interest added to your bills.

Some 20 years ago, I got into a lot of trouble with about 8 credit cards. I had excellent credit and I had about $35000 to spend on the cards. I maxed out most of the cards and with interest was paying just the minimum amount each month on each card. After about 15-20 years of this, I realized I was trapped in debt. It was so easy to get into this. I’d go into a store, buy anything I wanted, slap down the plastic and walk out with just about anything. My interest each month was like 5 car payments. Finally, a friend told me about Freedom Financial. They explained the program, worked with my creditors, and got all my debt down to 1 manageable payment. I was a bit skeptical at first because I thought they would soak me with fees but I was soon surprised how little they asked for this lifesaving program.

After about 4 years, I finally was able to complete the program and pay off my debt. I don’t drink but I went out and had a beer to celebrate. You cannot believe the financial burden that was lifted from my shoulders. The Freedom Financial program gave me a new life. I learned my lesson with credit cards. Never again will I let myself get into that mess. The people I dealt with were so nice and professional. I was always kept up to date on everything and their 800 number always answered my questions. The customer service with FDR was phenomenal. From the initial phone inquiry to my very last settlement, I felt like someone was looking out for my best interest. The initial relief came with the cessation of the harassing phone calls and letters. I could relax a little bit knowing they were being directed to and handled by professionals. The entire process took about 2 and a half to 3 years to become completely debt free and it was all completely worth it. I've become much more responsible and have learned that the lack of control is not worth the effort to recover from the damage done. My only concern, whether I was informed by FDR and didn't pay close attention or otherwise, is not being made explicitly aware of the tax repercussions of debt forgiveness. I wasn't prepared for that situation and was a little shocked come tax time when I had to claim the balance difference as income for the year. Overall, though, I couldn't have been happier with the services FDR provided and I'm happy to say I'm on a great track to healthy credit and will never go back to the way it was.

On one of our creditors - they went so far as to file in the local district court to sue us - I contacted Freedom and they told us, “Just calm down.” The court sent us a questionnaire from the creditor and Freedom helped us with filling it out; they told us how to answer, or what they were asking for in the questions, and after filling it out and sending it in, the creditor decided to accept an offer from Freedom and not sue us. Being able to answer the phone again was a really nice feeling. If it was a creditor, we had been given instructions on what to tell them, from Freedom. The calls slacked off greatly. It did take us 44 months, to complete the program, but that was due to the large amount of debt we had. Yes, I would highly recommend them again.

FDR informed me that I was done with my payments to Bank of America. However, a few months later, a collection company contacted me in regards to the debt. Apparently, per FDR, there was a "clerical" error in which a payment appeared to Bank of America as having not been made. Although FDR made the claim that this was indeed an error and provided me documentation to show all payments were made, BOA refuses to honor the initial settlement agreement. It seems that FDR does not have to capability to actually communicate with the businesses of the clients in order to rectify situations such as this.

I have spent years battling this, and I still do not know where this case stands. I keep waiting for more letters and calls from collector, not to mention that it continues to hurt my credit score. FDR assigned a person to my "issue", but other than this (this person is unable to accomplish anything since they cannot deal directly with BOA), FDR does not seem to have any action plan in place to resolve a situation such as this. I fulfilled my part of the agreement; I made all my required payments. It aggravates me greatly that FDR has been unable to rectify my situation.

Freedom Debt Relief is terrible with details. They will miss most of them and I assure you, it is to your detriment. I had a specific issue where a collector did not take the 1st of 14 payments but took 2-14, and Freedom Debt Relief's only suggestion to me was to re-negotiate the new balance minus the payments I had sent in for 14 months. Freedom Debt Relief has never finished the process with me, although I believe I have been finished with the program for years.

Freedom Debt Relief had no intention of stop drawing money out of my account. At the end, I had to close the account to get them to stop. I have no clue where Freedom Debt Relief has put my escrow balance. I called a total of 15 times over a period of 6 months; I do not think they know where it is either. In short, the program works, but do not expect Freedom Debt Relief to act as your friend, partner, etc. They will cause you misery as you go. I had never missed a payment before, but even though I was sending a very high monthly payment to try to pay down my debt, it wasn't working. I weighed the pros and cons and decided that if I was serious about getting out of debt, then I needed help. It was a little stressful to receive calls from creditors, but being able to give Freedom's info helped. Knowing that I was doing something was better than feeling like I was never going to get out of debt.

I began putting the high monthly payment into my Freedom account and was able to finish the program even faster than the 3-year time estimate they had given me. I liked that there was flexibility in being able to pay more than my monthly minimum and also being able to change dates, etc. Also, because I was putting additional money into the account, I had more in there than what my settlement actually ended up being. Freedom returned the extra money in a timely manner and I had no issues with getting the automatic withdrawal to stop after I completed the program. There was no runaround during any point in the process.

I was very pleased with Freedom and as long as you know what to expect with debt settlement (creditor calls, temporarily lowering your rate scores, etc.), then I recommend that you "walk through the fire" to get yourself out of debt. Bankruptcy cost less than half of FDR's prices for doing nothing. Terrible company, don't fall for it.

I am grateful that Freedom Debt Relief helped me out of debt. A few suggestions when you are going through the process of getting out of debt: Learn the system. Pay as much as possible in the beginning. Pay above the monthly payment. I wished I would have paid it off earlier. Visit your online account, both Freedom Debt Relief and the participating Global Bank. Lastly, stay on top of your paperwork and do not assume anything. I would like to touch on the pay off earlier suggestion. Your credit cards can still accrue interest before they are settled. If you are consistent managing your account, your experience will be less stressful.

I was very pleased with the service that I received during my time on the program. I was informed on everything that was taking place from start to finish. Without this program, I would still be struggling to get my life back on track. I can truly say that now I'm in a better place financially and looking forward to living worry free of credit card bills.

You forgot to tell me that even if you knock down the full payment due... the IRS was coming after me with the balance due to the creditors. Had I known, I would have stayed with the creditors. I had to borrow money from friends and the bank to pay the IRS.

Freedom Debt Relief worked with me when I had a better offer from one of my credit cards than Freedom Debt Relief could offer. One day, I was checking my account and discovered that my debt was paid off. I called them and immediately they took action to close out my account. Three years sounds like a long time but it went by quickly. I currently have no credit cards and if I want something, I pay cash.

I was getting a headache... trying to pay my credit card off. No matter how hard I try, it wasn't going down. Freedom Debt Relief came and helped me pay off my credit and not only help me pay them off, they also showed me how to handle my money better. It was very hard the first three months but then you don't miss the money. They're out to help pay the cards off... but now I feel a whole lot better because I am not in debt and I want to thank you for helping me get out of debt.

I had a great experience with Freedom Debt Relief. I enjoyed their friendliness and they make you feel like you can talk with them anytime and tell them anything. They are there to help you and the payment plan was something I could handle on a bi-weekly arrangement. If I get in another situation like the one I was in (I hope I don't), I would definitely call them.

I found out that it’s cheaper if you do it yourself. If you have the number to the credit card company, call them and make a settlement without Freedom Financial (FF). I had a Discover card that would not deal with third party companies so I had to negotiate with them by myself. Although I did all of the negotiation, I still had to pay FF a percentage of the settlement. I had a Chase card that I was able to settle for less than what FF could and again, I still had to pay them a percentage. The only card they MAYBE helped with was Bank of America but at the tie Bank of America was required to settle at a certain percentage by the US Government. So to sum up again... do it yourself and save thousands of dollars.

We paid our balance off in full, and it took over a year to get account resolved and closed resulting in more added fees. Plus, we called month after month and were given the runaround. Not very satisfied. I definitely wouldn't recommend this company to anyone. They want you to do your part in the agreement but don’t want to do theirs.

My husband and I were in WAY over our heads - new house, excessive spending, and too much credit card debt. (-in the neighborhood of 60K) With the downturn on employment, some family issues and the housing market we were really strapped to make ends meet. We looked into the usual solutions, none of which really could help. Then we discovered Freedom Financial. They were really helpful and didn't make us feel like second or third class citizens. Sure, it sucked big time committing to almost $1,000 month nut going to their account, but we resolved our credit card issues within three years (9 months earlier than our contract estimated!). I don't remember the exact amount of money they helped us save, but it had to be close to $40K! I'd recommend their services to anyone who currently finds themselves in credit crisis.

I initially signed up for a 24-month program. Now, it is 32 months; I have more than enough money in a special designated account with one remaining credit card account outstanding. I called twice every month to ask them why they are not doing anything on this account. I got all types of crazy answers from the customer services rep. My remaining balance is only $3200 and I have close to $4000 in a special designated account with Global Client Solution. Yet, Freedom Debt Relief still hangs me dry on this matter.

I have been enrolled in this program for over 11 months with just over $12k in debt and not only have the negotiations seemingly gone nowhere, but I cannot connect with the negotiators or a competent customer service rep to weigh my options. Additionally, despite reporting changes in my debt collector status, the debt collector FDR is negotiating with never changes in my account dashboard. I would have been much better off negotiating with my creditors directly than letting FDR do this for me. I am completely unsatisfied with this service. Do not use Freedom Financial, Freedom Debt Relief or whatever it is called. Find another agency or do the legwork yourself. I am finding that creditors are more than willing to work with you to resolve your debts in an affordable and timely manner. Beware of this service.

It took 4 years but we finished the program. They don't warn you properly about everything that can happen to you. I got sued twice and judgments placed against me and liens on my house. I had to borrow money from everyone to clear up the judgments so my bank accounts were not frozen. They eventually sorted it out but 3 years later, I'm battling getting my credit report correct. They say they will get you settlement letters when your debt is settled. All I received were settlement offer letters. Nothing that said the debts were settled.

When I called Freedom Debt Relief to request the paid letters, they said I had to call myself and get the letters. What did I pay them $15,000 for? I think bankruptcy would have been much better that the nightmare I went through with them. They are also rude and it takes an act of congress to get problems corrected when they happen. I would not recommend them to anyone at all! My lesson learned is that if I can't pay cash for something, I just don't buy it. I will never let myself have a credit card again.

I will start by saying, what a headache I have been through! A one-time draft to pay off a creditor has turned into a nightmare! My bank informed me that I was being charged fees because GCS was trying to remove funds twice. FDR said this has never happened before and it was GCS' fault. Then GCS said it was FDR's fault. So no one wants to take the fault. Okay, fine. In the meantime, I am just trying to pay off this last creditor to get out of this program. In the beginning, my husband and I could not have been more pleased. Now in the end, it has turned into a nightmare for us.
