Classmates.com offered a low cost trial period for one-year membership. As many have reported, I had changed my billing to manual but one year later, I have been automatically charged for $39.00 for a membership without being notified nor alerted that they would be billing my credit card. If they had, I would have canceled my membership. I have used other online services who automatically renew your membership or service. They all have notified me ahead of time that the year was up and they would be charging. Thus, giving the consumer ample time to cancel if desired. Reputable companies do this.

I joined Facebook this morning and have not been able to contact anyone regarding problems. I keep getting moved back to front page where I signed up. They have given names of friends but when I try clicking on their name, it shoots back to the original front page. I have been on this website for about 45 minutes now and can't get it to connect me with a friend. I could get that much information before I spent $40 for a year. I must be doing something wrong.

At one time I was a gold member of classmates.com. I then was running short of funds so I turned off automatic renew. I did not receive anything for a couple of years then all of a sudden I get charged for it again. And I have not even been to their website since I turned off the renewal. So now I have close to hundred dollars in fees and overdraft charges.

They are bugging me on line to activate my gold membership, which I never signed up for and there own site states that I have no cards currently on file, so how did they get my ATM card information to charge my checking account. This is just out and out fraud. I did not give them any credit card information.

Like many of the countless others, I too had my credit card dinged for a renewal of $39. I purchased a one year subscription, and that is all I wanted. When I called to complain about them taking $39 from my credit card, they just sounded like a broken record saying that it's in the terms that the renewal is automatic. The site itself doesn't work very well either. There are so many pop ups, that they're in the way and stops the scrolling as they pop up. This is one company that needs to be out of business, simple as that.

I signed up for a gold membership online, but later I went online to delete the automatic renewal process. I got email confirmation. However, just recently we looked at our credit card statement and realized that a charge had been made from the time I enrolled in Classmates that was from a company called Privacy Matters 123. When my husband finally asked me what I had ordered, I told him that I hadn't ordered anything other than the Classmates.com membership that was a gold membership for $9.95 and that I had canceled the automatic renewal for that.
Turns out that this company is a free credit checking company that’s supposed to check your credit and then send you the results. My husband and I have excellent credit and I never ordered such a service. There would be no need for me to do so. Yet, since the time that I ordered the gold membership for Classmates.com, suddenly this has appeared on our credit card statements (from November to April, approximately $120 worth). We didn't realize it at first until my husband finally asked me what that was all about.
I looked up the situation on the internet and it appears that this has happened to several people even if they hadn't ordered the Classmates.com service. I am very angry that someone would provide this information and charge us without our consent. Every single time our credit card company offers this to us, we turn it down. We obviously do not need this type of service. How can it be that this service is given to us without our permission? How do they get away with this type of rip-off? I am so disgusted because I have researched online and realized that it's not just me that they are taking advantage of. How does a company get away with this? We are in the process of disputing the charges and will cancel our credit card if we cannot control the situation. Amazing to me how rotten they can be. First and last time I will ever be taken advantage of. We will more than likely have to cancel our credit card and dispute the charges from this so-called business.

Same thing here pretty much. Although, when I signed up, I saw that it was set to auto renew, and went through the process of changing this to manual renewal. Lo and behold! A couple days ago, I was looking through my banking information and noticed a charge of 15 dollars. Figuring it was something my husband charged, I waited patiently for the charge to go through, so I could identify the company and put the information into Microsoft money.
Today it showed up as Classmates.com! I'm sure you can understand my surprise! Since these useless bags of rot don't put any contact information on their website except email contact, I emailed them. "Aron" emailed me back with a fill in the blank letter stating that " Unfortunately, our records do not reflect a previous cancellation associated with your membership. On your renewal date, which was April 27, 2010, your Gold membership renewed for another term because you were still enrolled in the automatic renewal program at that time." So, of course, I wrote Aron back and explained that I was aware of the company's policies, and that was why I went through the process of changing from auto to manual, and that I wanted the situation rectified immediately. Guess what? I basically got the same email again. Maybe we should all get together and file a class action Lawsuit! This company is committing fraud daily! I'm still out my $15.00, and I'm very upset! I did everything I was supposed to do, and I'm still out my money! This is wrong!

The point is these companies need to be put out of business, once and for all. All these reforms by congress regarding commerce and credit recently made should have addressed this! You need to follow up with legal action. Now! As all they are doing is preying on the trust and confidence of the public and scamming them. Please follow up and do something about this and them! Now! With that happening, I logged out of/stopped my membership with Classmates.com. Then today, about 2 months after I withdrew my membership, the fee was deducted from my account again. This is the reason that I am so reluctant to give out any account online. I was not charged, only because I followed the following rule: Always purchase a prepaid credit card whenever you purchase something over the internet or info-commercial. Normally, you can purchase a $100 card for a service charge of about $6. Buy what you want and then use up the balance right away. It saves a lot of problems. If the item costs more than $100, Wal-Mart sells a card that does not have a limit.

Two Years Ago. I apparently signed up for Classmates.com's 'Gold Membership'. I don't go on the site, it really doesn't offer much and I never benefited from the site. Well - my Credit Card was just charged $59.00 yesterday by Classmates- and when I contacted them by phone - they didn't call me back. They did respond to my email with a 'canned' response stating that auto-renewal is a default when you sign up initially. I wrote back and explained that I wasn't aware of that, and I would have appreciated notification that my CC was going to be charged - unless I took action.
Their response back to me today was that their policy is no refunds and that I can enjoy my subscription for two more years. Scam, anyone who has signed up for this 'subscription' - and you wish to cancel, you need update the membership 'options and you must remove the CC from their site. Two years ago on March 14, 2008, I bought the hype about this online company and enrolled in a 2-year Gold Membership. I quickly regretted it because the site is very user-unfriendly and the site only helped me locate one high school classmate. Subsequently, Facebook has identified many more classmates and it is a much easier website to use and free! I had no intention of renewing my subscription to classmates and thought I would just let my membership lapse. I just received my latest charge card account statement and learned that classmates has charged my account another $59.00 for two more years from March 14, 2010 to March 14, 2012!
I immediately called them and told them to cancel my membership and credit me the $59.00. I was told that classmates will not credit my account or refund my money! They said that I signed up for an "automatic renewal" subscription and that they can not change it for this cycle. I said that I don't remember signing up for an automatic renewal. But regardless, I want to cancel the subscription now because the membership did not live up to my expectations. I told classmates that I have not been using the site for months and I would not use the website anymore in the future. So I called my cc company and notified them to reverse these charges after I had e-mailed Classmates.com complaining of what they had done and that I had never agreed to "Automatic Renewal" (I used a "Prepaid Debit”, so why would I have opted for automatic?) like everyone else here. They tried to say that I had agreed to it at the time I joined also their website would not allow me to change it to "manual". Back in 2008, I signed up for the Classmates.com gold membership. When I activated my account, I indicated that renewal of this account should be manual. I checked my credit card account and was surprised to find a charge of $39.00 from Classmates.com for March 23,2010. I called Classmates.com, waited 25 minutes for a customer service rep, who told me that when I signed up, I signed up for automatic renewal. I told her that I did not do that, and I am sure I didn't. She insisted that I did, but that she would go into my account and change it to manual subscription. However, she said that I would not be refunded the $39.00.
This is fraud because I know that I indicated manual renewal, not automatic. It is also unethical because they never sent me an email reminding me that my time for renewal was coming up. I checked my credit card statement from March of 2009 And saw a charge for $39.00 but no company name beside it. That in itself seems deceptive. If the bill back in 2009 stated the charge was from "Classmates.com" I would have taken care of it at that point.
Unfortunately, I somehow just paid the bill and didn't question it. Now I am paying for 2 years for something I don't want or use. Someone needs to do something about this company. I called Classmates.com and spoke with Rhiannon, who told me that when I signed up. I signed up for automatic renewal. I told her that I did not do that. I know I didn't. She insisted that I did, but that she would go into my account and change it to "manual" subscription. She said that, however, I would not be refunded the $39.00.
This is fraud, because I know that I indicated "manual" renewal, not automatic. It is also unethical because they never sent me an e-mail reminding me that my time for renewal was coming up. By these practices, Classmates.com is illegally scraping in lots of bucks from people like me who trusted them.

I signed up for a two week membership and they have been charging my account every three months since. I have called them several times trying to stop this nonsense, to no avail. I can't even access the account to see what's going on. They actually said this time that they would credit my account, but that hasn't happened either. Is there any way to stop them from doing this to unsuspecting people? They charged me $15.00 just a couple days before payday. Times are hard. I didn't have the money to cover it. Now, I have been charged a $20.00 overdraft fee as well. $35.00 goes along way for a single mom of a teenager.

I had been a member of Classmates.com for a few years. Last year I discovered my account said auto renew. I emailed Classmates.com (because you can never get anyone via their phone number, it always says to call back during normal business hours, which I called at 10 am). I received a reply from a representative named Jenny and she gave directions on how to remove the auto renew, which I did, changing it to manual. Today I discovered a charge for $39.00 on my checking account made on 03/23/2010.
I went into the Classmates.com account and discovered they had put my account information back up there. What is interesting is that the card they charged it to was reported stolen on 03/04/2010 and I did not receive my new card until 11 days later and did not activate it until 3 days after that as I had not yet received a new pin number the new card had a new expiration date on it. I immediately filed a complaint with the BBB and State Attorney General's office. This company needs to practice honest policies. I received no notice of a renewal or any other correspondence from Classmates.com. I am done with them. I also requested my name and any information be removed from the site. They are dishonest and underhanded. While $39.00 may not seem like a lot of money, I became a widow in 02/21/2010. Right now things are quite tight as my husband’s pension has not started yet nor has his Social Security. I do not need this kind of aggravation. I need my money back.

I subscribed to the Gold Membership last year, and decided after a while to not renew. I discovered a renewal charge of $39 on my bank statement that was made without notice. I checked the terms of service on Classmates and discovered that, yes, I was signed up for automatic renewal. I contacted customer service by email and exchanged about three messages with a polite but firm representative who would not budge on my request to please just refund and cancel. It appears this was my fault, and yet I just can't respect a company that won't do the human thing and bend the rules for a customer once in a while.
Regardless of my account settings, I expect a company to notify me in some way that a charge is being made against my bank account. I have accepted that I have lost my money, but Classmates has lost a potential future customer in myself and all others I care to share my experience with. It strikes me as disingenuous that a company advertising itself as a way to reconnect with old friends can be so inflexible in its dealings with its own customers. The frequent emails I received from them during my membership telling me someone from my school was trying to contact me or that I had a new visitor were lies 90% of the time. Because of this and their rigid adherence to cold policy, I am done with Classmates.com.

I never signed up for auto-renewal and they said it wasn't an option. I had my account deleted (with credit card info) and it really is the only way to be done with it. If enough people complain they may stop endorsing them...absolutely ridiculous. And yes, have your account completely deleted so they do not hit you again next year. Somehow they get away with it, doesn't seem to matter. They sent the bank a form (they can't send it to you though) proving it was mentioned at sign up, but they clearly know they are scamming people. Buyers beware!

I just saw a charge on my debit card for $39.95. I haven't even accessed the classmates.com site in at least a year. I used Facebook instead. I went in and changed my account on Classmates to manual, but in their account info, there's no option to change the type of account you have. It seems like once you're a gold member, you're always a gold member. I don't want a gold membership anymore.
Also, I didn't receive a notice that my renewal was upcoming. Other sites with automatic renewal send you at least one email saying your membership is about to renew. I've sent an email to classmates.com, then we'll see if they'll willingly refund my money. If not, I'll go through my bank. But why is classmates.com able to get away with this after all this time and all these complaints? They are billing me $39.95. Will I get it refunded? It's going to cause me a $28.50 overdraft fee on my account.

Solution for Classmates.com and other companies with this sort of practice. Go to Walmart, CVS or anyone else in your town that sells prepaid debit cards. I prefer Green Dot but all will work if you use them correctly. When you decide to use a service or purchase something online, you then use the prepaid card. Before you make the purchase, you load the card with the amount you need. The company or person then uses the prepaid card for the transaction. If they try anything else, the charges won't go through if there are no funds available. If a company or person becomes a problem, just walk away from that card and get another.
Yes, it costs you to put money on the card and buy it but it's less than an overdraft fee and it solves the problem. I use a prepaid card (Green Dot and others will send one out with your name on it) and I've never had a problem since I started using them. I've had one place try to place an unauthorized charge, but so far, my plan works perfectly.

I had an account with Classmates at one time. It was a paid account. I allowed the paid account to lapse but kept the free account that they offered. I also had an account with Netzero (for seven years). The two companies are both operated by United Online. I canceled my Netzero account and some time later, discovered a charge for $4.98 on my bank account. My bank supplies a contact telephone number for any charges to my account.
It is fortunate that they do as Netzero does not supply any contact information for current and former subscribers. Anyway, when I contacted Netzero to inquire about the charge, I was told that I had ordered a service from them that I had not. After numerous calls to the outsourced customer service number supplied by my bank, I was reimbursed for six or seven months of unauthorized charges. Remember, I had a free account with Classmates all this time. Well, I decided to cancel my free account with Classmates, as they were burying me with e-mails. Now, it's a few months later and I see a charge for $59 on my bank statement from Classmates, and again, a number supplied by my bank to contact them.
My sister-in-law had alerted me in the meantime, to the scam that United Online was running with its various companies. I ran down to my bank, literally, and had my ATM card number changed. The bank gave me a temporary reimbursement of the phony charge. I have just received a letter from their Dispute Resolution Department that my dispute was decided in my favor.
If I had not noticed this charge, United Online, mother company to Classmates.com would have been richer by $59. I wonder how many people have had these bogus charges deducted from their bank accounts months after doing business wit United Online and its subsidiaries? Why has there not been an investigation of them by the government? I will be happy to join any such investigation should it be instituted. My security was offended by these people.

Today, I discovered the same two weird charges on my credit card that I had seen last month. I called my CC company, and they said the charges were the same each month going back to November: one $24.95 monthly charge from MVQ*PRIVACYMID (Other) and one $19.95 monthly charge from MVQ*PRIVACYM (Other ).
They gave me the phone number to contact the offending company, which is Privacy Matters Identity (888-238-3919). I told the supervisor that I spoke to at Privacy Matters that I had not signed up for the service, and didn't know how it had happened. After asking a lot of questions, during which time she kept trying to get off the phone, I finally got her to agree to not only cancel the accounts, but to reimburse me for the entire amount going back to November. I had been charged a total of $225 on my credit card over the last 5 months, including March. Privacy Matters Identity agreed to reimburse the total amount when I called them on 3/16/2010. I selected 'manual' payment, not automatic payment, on my Classmates.com account. I am unsure as to how, why and when Classmates.com changed this preference for me. I have been charged $15 on several occasions now. Because the charges are so small, only $15, and only charged once every three months, I did not catch the error until now. I was charged on 7/30/2009, 10/30/2009, and again on 1/30/2010. These charges were unauthorized. Because I just caught this error, the only charge officially contested is the 1/30/2010 charge. In December, a charge was put on my BAC account for $39 for a year membership for 2010. I called to cancel and they would not, saying I checked for auto renewal. I did not. A renewal would have been for another 3 months anyway, not a year. I was not given any proof of my agreement of a renewal. BAC sides with Classmates stating I gave them my account number once so I engaged with them. They want me to sign a paper with them stating that I engaged with them for the $39 charge and that now I want to cancel the membership and charge. If I don't, they, in the writing on form state, they can not help me or go on with the investigation into the charge from Classmates. My three month charge was not for $39 and I did not engage in the $39 charge, so I will not sign this statement. I called to talk to them about this and I was told I must sign or they cannot help. I went online to see what renewal info is on the site. While searching for the site (I stopped use of it when 3 months ran out), I found a web site about Classmates. It has pages and pages (170) of others complaining about $19 to $39 charges put on their credit or debit account for these amounts in December or January without their approval or request for renewal. One was even after not months of no membership, but years without a membership. Several other Credit Card companies are siding with the Classmate company and not canceling or refunding the charge. There are about 900 complains. Everyone states they did not approve a renewal or receive a notice of a renewal, only the charge on their account. I believe with all of these complaints someone should investigate, especially the fact of no approval or no cancellation of months not used yet.

Given the number of complaints I have seen online about these business practices, I wanted to add mine as well. They are very sneaky. There was an unauthorized charge to my Visa of $39.00.

My membership was renewed automatically. When I complained, I was told that I had 'signed up' for automatic renewal (I had not). I'm assuming that they automatically sign you up this way and you have to check a (small) box saying that you don't want it. I explained how my husband has been unemployed for over 7.5 months but they could care less. They are a scam.
I also explained how I've had numerous automatic renewals with other firms (AAA for one) and that these firms send out correspondence stating that your annual membership is running out and will be renewed automatically that way you can cancel if you wish. They said that their members "like the convenience" and "want to cut down on the correspondence they receive!"
Please do something about Classmates. They are being very deceitful and taking advantage of people. In initially tried calling (twice), but both times I was on hold for over 40 minutes so I emailed instead. I am disputing this charge with my credit card company stating it is an unauthorized charge.

From my experience, Classmates is corrupt, misguided and professionally bankrupted organization that seems to managed itself in an illegal fashion.

I was charged on my credit card for a 2nd year of classmates.com without my knowledge. When I called them, they said that was what I signed up for a year ago, but they cannot provide me with any paperwork stating so. They were even able to use a different credit card than what I used the first year (which I had cancelled and replaced). They told me I cannot get a refund no matter what I do. I tried to cancel my subscription 3 times and each time, it didn't go through. Something needs to be done about this practice of not even sending a renewal to the customer in case they do not want to keep on subscribing. I have filed a complaint with the BBB, which by the way gives them an A+ rating even having over 900 complaints. What's up with that?

We are on a fixed income and cannot afford bounced checks and we indicated this to classmates. I sent email on December 30th 2009 indicating that I did not authorize nor did I desire to participate with classmates. These people are desperate! Please put them out of our misery gracefully. I keep receiving emails telling me that there are 15 people looking for me, so I thought what the ** and decided to subscribe. What a bunch of nonsense! There is not one person that I know on the list. These people went to schools in different states and it is a total waste to be a member. Since I subscribed yesterday and find this to be worthless, I would like to unsubscribe from Classmates and have my money refunded. I forgot how much I paid. I paid for one year subscription, then visited the site a few times and then stopped using it because its database was rather sparse and it has lots of lost accounts and old email addresses. A year later, I got served with a $39 renewal fee. Apparently, I was automatically enrolled into a renewal program without my knowledge of it.
I have been calling their customer service number. I was told that they would gladly remove me from the renewal program, but their service fees are non-refundable and the best that they can do it is to offer me a 50% discount. I thanked them then I decided to repute the entire amount with my credit card.
My dispute came less than a week after the charge and the credit card company removed the charge. However, they warned me that if classmates.com comes back with evidence that I was enrolled in their automatic renewal program, I will lose my dispute and those charges will be restored.
At this point, I am also a bit unhappy with my CC company. Classmates.com can easily fake whatever evidence they need to present and it is discouraging to know that Chase Sapphire is telling me that they will side with the vendor. I am also not thrilled that they allowed the charge to go through even though the original card has expired and I now have a new expiration date. I had several legitimate charges that did not go through for this very same reason!

Reading all these complaints, I am very glad that others have posted as well. This site is very fraudulent in the use of your credit card information. I signed up for this several months ago and I now find that I have been charged by Privacy Protect Plus from Quebec who told me that I had clicked on a link within **** that allowed them to charge my credit card for the above amount. **** is being very fraudulent with privacy issues. They say that your information is secure but they pass this information onto associated companies for more fraudulent activity. I called Privacy Protect, today, December 31, 2009, to cancel and I was told that this will be cancelled back on November and the 2 months will be reimbursed and I was told that I clicked on this link on August 6 of this year. How can a supposed legitimate site get away with this? Most times, the links on the classmate site do not work so why be a member and pay for something you cannot use. This site should be shut down and be held responsible for their actions.

The charge has been on the account since November 11, and I have been charged a late fee at this time. I have an excellent credit score and will now have to fight to get back my $39 and try to get the credit card to take off the late fee. I have tried calling the company today, but they are closed "for the holidays" so I do not know when I can get back on there.
The credit card company may report me as late on a payment, and I have never had a late payment. Also, after reading others' problems, I doubt I will be able to get my $39 back, but even worse, how do I get them to quit charging every year? I did not ask for recurring payments and do not use the site, although they do continue to send me notices that "someone visited my page" that I have been deleting.
