I just checked my credit card online and saw a charge of $39 for something I did not recognize or authorize. I called the number listed on my visa statement ** and found out that this company was called Classmate.com. Well, how did they get my credit card? I never signed up for their service or sent them my credit card number. Someone must be spying into my computers to pick up on credit card information. I called my Visa card company and they are looking into this problem too. I noticed lots of people online complaining about unauthorized charges. But most of these people were at one time a member. I never joined this Classmate.com, so I don't understand how they got my credit card information. This warrants a complete investigation. Thank you.

They charged my credit card $59 bucks for a gold membership that I don't use anymore. They say I enrolled in auto renewal? What? I don't recall this at all. The lady (even you can even call her that) was extremely rude on the phone. She hung up on me at the end. Closed my account, but kept my money. I will fight tooth and nail for the money back. This place needs to be shut down. I don't get how they used a credit card with an expiration date that I don't even have. I also don't get how a business can say no to a refund when a customer is not happy with a service and/or does not use it. I am angry!

I was charged $59 for an automatic renewal that I did not ask for by Classmates.com. After emailing, demanding cancellation and my money back, I received an immediate automatic letter stating that when I signed up over 2 years ago, that I agreed to this - which I did not. After replying to that, I got no response. It's like they had this auto letter ready because they knew I would dispute! That clearly shows their intent to fraud. I notified my bank, but after reading these other reviews, I do not have high hopes to ever see my $59 again. What a scam!

I noticed a charge on my credit card for $39 from classmates.com. And when I looked at my membership information, it said manual and not automatic renewal. I finally found a number to call them after sending 4 emails and not getting a response from them. When I called, they said that my account was set to automatic and was only set to manual as of the day I called. Yeah whatever. I'm in the process of removing my profile but that is becoming a huge issue. If you want to call them, the number is 206-301-5700. I was on hold for 15 minutes before anyone answered. I don’t think I will get my $39 back.

I cancelled my subscription to Classmates.com over a year ago and deleted my credit card information from the website at that time. I was shocked to see that Classmates.com had charged me $59 on December 23rd to automatically renew a gold membership. This was done without my authorization! (Obviously) I contacted the company at 206-301-5900 and spoke with Jonas (ID **) on December 28th to resolve this issue. He stated that there was no record of me cancelling the subscription or removing the credit card information from the website prior to today and that it was impossible for my credit card to be charged if this had been done. I assured him that I had done the above actions and the credit card was charged without my consent. He stated that he would delete my account after I asked him to, but refused to refund my money. I also contacted my bank to try and get the money back but I am waiting for a response.

I do not know where this bogus company is located. They found me and I did sign up for what I thought was one year. They were supposed to send me the names of classmates who wanted to get in touch with me but I only recognized one name that they sent to me. I just received my Visa statement, and they, without my permission, billed me $39 for another year, 2010. When I tried to contact them by email, they rejected my password which I use for everything else without a problem. When I called them on my cell phone because their phone number (206-301-5900) is not a toll free number, I waited 15 minutes to get through to a representative. When I asked to speak with a supervisor, I was told the supervisor wasn't there at that time.
I asked the rep to take the $39 charge for 2010 off my bill, and she refused repeatedly. She said I had initially signed up for continuous service. Does that mean they can bill me every year until I die? I see online that there are over 600 complaints against these people. Why can't something be done to stop them? I feel helpless because I am a 72-year old widow and cannot afford this annual charge. They are using my charge card without my permission and I am sure that is fraud or theft. With all the complaints against these people, why can't you stop them? I don't understand why they are still in business. If there is a class action suit, I want to be part of it. They need to be put out of business and fined!

When I signed up for Classmates.com in July of 2008, somehow they deceitfully got me to agree to a membership with Shopping Essentials for $23.95 per month. I had no idea I agreed to that. I never benefitted in any way from the membership and didn't know I even belonged. I thought the charges on my credit card bill were for things my wife was buying. I would like a credit for all 17 months that I paid these weasels on my credit card bill.

I hadn't received anything informing me that they would take this money out or any information asking me for permission. I still cannot believe it.

After having received a large number of emails from Classmates.com over the course of the past two years, I decided to join. The emails would inform me that someone I knew had signed my Classmates's guestbook and if I wanted to find out who that person was, it would be necessary for me to pay a fee in order to have "golden" member status. The advertisement assured me that once I paid the fee, the unknown signer's name would be revealed to me. At the time I decided to sign up for the golden member status (two days ago, December 24, 2009). I supposedly had 25 people that signed my guestbook. The advertisement went so far as to show a picture of my guestbook with all the names blurred out, which made it appear that people had left their name for me to see, but the blurriness made it impossible to identify the names.
So as I stated, I paid the fee and then logged on to Classmates.com to see who all these people were that had signed my guestbook. Unfortunately, I discovered that there were only two names listed in that guestbook. I was very disappointed and realized at that point that I was a victim of a slick marketing ploy. I decided at that point that I would just chalk it up to a lesson learned and let it go. However, today I received another one of those advertisements from Classmates.com stating that an old friend had just signed my Classmates.com guestbook and would I like to pay to become a golden member to find out who that person is.
It was at this point that I googled "Classmates.com scams" and found page after page of consumer complaints for many different reasons. Many people had encountered that same situation that I had, while others were complaining about being double and triple charged for their golden member status. Writing this email is where I've decided to start. I've printed a copy of the advertisement they sent me as well as a copy of my payment confirmation from them. I'm hoping I can rally enough people to put together a class action suit against them.

I did not renew my membership to Classmates.com after my 39th class reunion. There was no need to. I had gotten in contact w/ everyone I wanted to keep in touch with. When I previously ended my Classmates.com account, they continually sent me notices that someone had signed my guestbook. I was curious and renewed but there were really only two people, neither of whom I knew. I finally figured out that they use this gimmick to trick you into renewing and sure enough, I'm getting emails one or two times a week saying someone signed my guestbook. I didn't get that many when my reunion was going on. It's ridiculous that they keep getting away with it. Can't you please do something about this fraudulent practice?

When I asked questions regarding their service from a supposed friend, they informed me to join or they (the friend) won't read what I had sent. I stated that I wanted no part of their service and no further contact from them and commented strongly on my response. I have blocked them but I'm not sure if I'm successful. It appears to me that they are using info off other sources such as Facebook and trying to entice a person into joining. I gave my email to a supposed friend and have not heard from them. I'm looking to start a class action law suit against Classmates.com. I never use this site, but signed up for a Gold membership to contact friends a couple of years ago - having used the site for free since 2003 or so. They had my card on file and charged it without telling me in advance that they would (either by postal mail, email or a phone call or notice at all), claiming that when you sign up online, you agree to have them auto-renew your account. I ensured my account was set to manual so it wouldn't renew. They did it anyway without notice. I saw a pending transaction on my online bank account. I called them and explained that I didn't agree to this and didn't want to be forced to have another two years of this service. They said, "Too bad, your card has been changed. We don't refund." I filed a charge back with my bank and credit card company (Chase/MasterCard) and Classmates disputed it saying I agreed, per their terms.
I do not want this service. They are charging me before I have the service and I told them that I don't want it, but this is how they make their money - by forcing people to renew, even if you didn't set it to renew or agree nor be notified they would. Then they tell your CC provider that you agreed to their terms so you don't get CC protection. They can steal your money if you ever sign up. They don't even have an option to cancel your account if you want, so they tell your CC company that you have an active account with them and use that to justify the charge for the "membership renewal," and your CC company will say "You have an active account and per their terms, you have it auto-renew." I did not. However, even if I did, that's for ease of future payments and it's not supposed to be a way to force you to use their service! It's ridiculous because there's no way to prove you didn't go in and set it to manual, so it wouldn't auto charge your card without any notice to you.
Even if you made a mistake and forgot, it's sleazy as hell for Classmates to take the money and force you to use their service when you tell them you don't want the service before you even use it. It's your right to change your mind or refuse the service or product before you get it or are sent it or use it. This is a complete scam. They bank on making money from people forgetting or from their system glitch that doesn't hold onto the last selection to not auto-renew. Scumbags! I'm looking to start a class action lawsuit as they are likely making millions from all of the users having this happen. How many people were forced to have another year or two membership that didn't want it and didn't select auto-renew for their CC on file!?
What stops any site from charging you randomly for a service you don't want and just claim you agreed to it? They should happily and promptly reverse the charge, but they clearly make the bulk of their money from this from what I'm seeing. You have no way to prove otherwise! I run sites. I know how it works and any site could then just rip you off and you'd have no recourse. They can't get away with this. It's like saying you ordered a stereo from an online site and two years later, they send you a new stereo and charge you. You don't accept it because you never agreed to it and they say, "Too bad, the stereo is yours and we've billed you!" What's to stop that from happening just because at one point, two years ago, you did agree to buy the stereo?
This is ridiculous. It's a way to have them force you into having an account at this worthless site. Classmates is a joke. Hardly anyone uses it and they are desperate enough to rip off clients by putting terms that force you to renew and you can't dispute the charge? There's no way for me to prove I didn't select to not auto-renew, so Classmates has ripped me off! I'm looking to start a class action lawsuit to expose this scam they are running, so if this has happened to you, please contact me at **. I'm spreading the word. Thank you.

I called today, left holding for 15 min to get a lady who was very sarcastic and said she didn't show I ever called or emailed to request this. I said, "So cancel it and credit my account." She said, "Sorry, too late." So, I am stuck with paying the $39 until my subscription runs out on 12/6/10.
They do not make it easy on their website to cancel. They were really horrible to deal with. I could dispute it on my Visa, but I am afraid it will affect my credit; and $39 isn't worth the hassle. This website allows for political debate forums. However, there is a tremendous volume of hate-based propaganda (Left and Right), coupled with vicious attacks on individual posters who disagree with each other. These attacks on individuals go into family relationships, sexual issues, personal information posted and even actual physical threats. Occasionally, the C/M staff does take down some threads and posts after complaints. But new ones start immediately in their place and the process continues. The offender can be excluded from membership, but this rarely happens and the reasons for such action is arbitrarily applied.
Several posters openly complain about the continual harassment and insults that come from these boards. Being from the "Left," I have been subjected to continuous taunts, threats and hundreds (literally!) of insulting posts. One poster in particular threatened to "give you a whipping at the main gate" when I attended the Notre Dame-USC game in South Bend, IN. Local law enforcement agencies were contacted and no incident occurred. That poster is still writing against others on the C/M boards! All perspective customers should be advised about this aspect of Classmates.com. The atmosphere can be vicious, intrusive and possibly dangerous. Summer of 2008, I enrolled in a 3-month trial membership only. They continue (and just did in August 2009) to charge my card every three months for $15 and they cannot be contacted in any way to stop this. I have had to go to my bank finally to change all my accounts to stop these people. I have told everyone I know connected with them to do the same. I am a senior citizen on SSI and $15 every three months or $60 a year may not be anything to some but to me, especially with the cost of medications, it's a lot.

While reviewing my bank statement, I noticed a charge for $15.00 from Classmates.com. I did sign up for what I thought was a one-time fee for 3 months. I went to Classmates.com to complain. They tried to tell me I had agreed to an automatic renewal fee but told me how to cancel. Well, I forgot my password and have requested it no less than 3 times. Each time they said it would be sent to me in 15 minutes. Here it is 2 weeks later and I have no password to get into my account to cancel. What a worthless website. They should be banned from doing business.

In May, they sold me a 3-month gold membership and I paid for it on my credit card. Today, there was another $15 charge on my card for another 3-month membership. I called them and they said I did not check the little box at the top of the form when I registered. The charge on my account today was still pending as it just was charged. They refuse to reimburse me and they cancelled my account. I told them to cancel, then I told them if they weren't going to reimburse me not to cancel. I posted my experience on my bulletin board and now no one can read it because they cancelled me. Dishonorable business practice used by someone who has trouble getting people to renew of their own free will! Who gives them the right to do this? Why don't they say that they will not renew if you do not check the little box. No, they do it so it profits them. Many times over, I see! Close them down.

I took advantage of the "Gold Membership" so that I could connect with friends. I did connect with a couple of friends and was happy to be able to do that. However, at the end of the membership, there was no renewal notice and my bank account was automatically charged at full price ($39.00) for a renewed membership. Unfortunately, due to family circumstances, I was unable to work with my bank statements until yesterday and thus, did not note the July 3rd charge until then. I have tried to contact by phone, but only got a recorded message referring me to the website. So, I have tried numerous times to get into my account, but cannot access it at all. Today, I realized in my attempts for contact that it is never going to happen.
I am out $39 for a service I would have cancelled had I been given a renewal notice. I also realized that because I cannot access the company, I will continue to be out $39 (yearly) for a service that I no longer use. I had no intention of renewal because the service is not worth what it charged. I also cannot afford to pay that kind of money for something that is not beneficial.

I have read several of the complaints that individuals have posted about Classmates.com practicing false advertising with regard to automatic renewal of their "gold" membership, indicating that the automatic renewal is not clearly stated. Perhaps, it is a matter of these individuals not reading what they are signing up for before providing their credit card information so freely. The link that I accessed to sign up for the "gold" membership stated very clearly that the membership would automatically renew after 1 year and that the then current charge would automatically be charged to the credit card account that is provided upon enrollment. I don't find this to be false advertising, or fraud, or deceptive business practice or any of the other terms that have been used to describe Classmates' process. I find this to be the fault of the consumers who do not take the time to read what they are getting into and then wanting to blame someone else for their own actions. This is not even a case of "buyer beware", since nothing is hidden and everything is out in the open - if only the consumer would open their eyes!

The woman I spoke to called them and found out it was Classmates.com. There's no name, only numbers, which turned out to be the phone number that showed up on my statement. She suggested I call them and cancel my account. In trying to do so, I read several complaints. It appears we can't cancel. I had signed up for the $2.46. Also, I was charged the $59.00.
This is absolutely an obscene and awful business practice. Also, looking through the website, they have people whom they claim graduated with me from Minneapolis Central in 1969 and whom I don't even remember. And having been a small class, there are only a few I don't remember; and I have my yearbook to look up and find those people. However, I did call the toll free number on my credit card bill and canceled whatever it was I had been paying for about 4 or 5 months. But the services from Classmates were unbelievable. It’s the same as with so many others. This company continues to "fix" requests for cancelling memberships and continues to bill for services after you request cancellation. Clearly, they are continuing to abuse and take advantage of hundreds, if not thousands, of people. After lengthy fights with them on the phone, when you can reach them, they might eventually cancel membership but not repay for the time you were unaware of continued billing.
This company is the worst at this practice I have ever been aware of and there are now many complaints. Something must be done about them. I stupidly gave them a second chance after having this same problem a year ago. I gave them a second chance after assurance it would not happen again. This time I joined for a "trial" period of 3 months and marked the "manual" renewal. That is, it "should not" renew unless I "manually" go in and renew beyond the "trial" period. I recently signed on as a free member on Classmates.com. They do not allow to view very much, and want you to become a "gold member" in order to see your classmates. So, on 8-8-09, I authorized Classmates.com to take $15 out of my bank account with a debit every 3 months. On the webpage of the credit/debit card transaction, there was also a block marked "yes," but I read that was a Privacy Act 123, different site totally. I unmarked the box. I was looking for a "submit" button, but found an electronic signature box. I assumed it was because my debit card was being used as a credit card for the transaction, so I entered in my email address.
I was able to access my classmates now, due to paying $15. I was on the site for several hours, filling information out, etc. I decided to "log out" when I was done. I decided to go back onto the website a short while later, only to experience my password or registration was not correct. I used my email address as my registration so I knew that was correct. I requested my password information. I thought maybe I transposed a letter; I knew I was entering in the correct password.
I sent an email to MemberCare regarding needing my password reset. Shortly after that, I received an email from Privacy 123, telling me that I signed up to their plan (my putting in my email address), that I authorized them to my bank account and I had 7 days to cancel the policy. I immediately phoned them only to be told they were closed. Then, I received an email saying that they had cancelled my policy.
Then, Classmates.com Member Care replied back that I would receive an email with a link to a password reset in the next 15 minutes. That was 5:30 pm, last evening. As I sent emails complaining that I still have not received the password reset, I keep receiving emails back from them with tips on what could be wrong with my browser setting, or that I would receive an email with a link. It is now 10:51 am, the following day, and I received another email telling me that I would receive an email with a password reset link. I sent them an email demanding my money back and they are not authorized to ever use my debit card number again and I want immediate resolution.
I feel that their website is very misleading, especially the payment website, allowing another company (Privacy 123) to be on there, with no mention of them prior, and now, to not be able access the website of Classmates.com and they have my $15 payment. If they do not return my payment, then I want to be part of the class action lawsuit.

I signed up for a 3-month membership for $15 at classmates.com, and chose "manual" renewal because I was aware of their shady practices but I needed to get in touch with someone. Well, today I get my credit card statement and, lo and behold, there's a charge for another $15! So I log in to my classmates profile, check my settings and guess what?! It says "automatic"! Oh, really?! So I got the number listed next to the charge on my statement and not surprisingly, it's only a recording directing you back to their website. Hmm, now I do a search and find this website where someone posts the real phone number!
I call and long story short, the guy tells me they don't give refunds and that it's my fault(!) that I must not have pressed "save changes" on my acct. when I chose "manual" renewal. I mention the class action lawsuit and he says, "I can't comment on that." So I'm disputing the charge w/ my credit card company at the moment. How can I sign up for that lawsuit?! Oh, and by the way, the number listed on my charge was **, incorrect! The real number is **!
But be warned, it took me 3x to get through! I was first told their office was closed, so I hung up and called back, only to be told all agents were unavailable! 3rd time, I finally got a live person! So they were closed, busy, then available all within 5 minutes. Interesting. Sign me up for the class action lawsuit!

I went online to sign up with Classmates.com. I thought I might like to pay for the Gold Membership. When I realized I wanted to cancel, I found out I needed a password. I was never sent a password. I was told by their Member Care Team that I need a password. I got a message from the Member Care Team but not a password. I want to cancel my paid membership. I do not want to be charged for any membership.

In 2008, I paid for a year Gold membership to Classmates.com. On 8-1-09, they automatically charged a renewal fee to my charge card for $39 for an additional year. I checked my card charges online on 8-6-09 and immediately called Classmates.com to cancel that charge. They said they give no refunds, but they would make sure the account would not be automatically renewed in August 2010.
I did not print out the registration page when I signed up in 2008. Today, they told me that it said the membership would automatically renew and that there would be no refunds. I checked today, and today, it says that. I don't remember what it said then. I would have at least expected clear notifications near the renewal date that my membership would be renewed automatically and that there would be no refunds after renewals. While I remember receiving lots of notices about people on Classmates, I remember seeing no notice about a pending renewal with no refund.
As a goodwill gesture, magazines often provide such notifications and refunds. It doesn't seem like Classmates.com has a corporate conscience. I asked to escalate my complaint to a supervisor, but I was told no supervisor was available for me to speak to. So now, I have an additional year's subscription to a service I have no interest in.

I'm trying to cancel my membership, and they would not respond. No consequences yet, but I can't stop them from automatic repayment.

If you are having problems getting a credit from Classmates.com, call them at 206-301-5700. I found this number at the domain registration site when they registered their name. It took me a full day to find a number to call to cancel my 'auto renew' membership which I did not agree to when I signed up. They issued a credit to my credit card and sent me an email verifying it after I mentioned the class action lawsuit I found on the web. Buyers beware!

My screen name ** was set up on my girlfriend's computer. We are no longer together. When I moved, I signed online and signed up for Classmates.com. When Patricia saw me online, she changed my password so I couldn't use my account. I am being billed for Classmates.com, and I have no access to that account. I would like to cancel this. I tried to call several times, and I couldn't speak to anyone else. What I got was a recording. My new screen name is **. After this is cancelled, I will sign up on my new name. Thanks again. I hope to hear from you, so I don't have to go to the bank and stop charges to my credit card. Thank you again.

Although I have read complaint after complaint regarding Classmates.com, I, on the other hand, have had nothing but good luck in dealing with this website. They have handled my situation with the utmost professionalism. I took a one year membership with them for $9.95, which was offered along with other discounts on their site. I chose this one as it was the one that worked best for me. The site was a bit confusing at first, but once I understood what to do, it was very self-explanatory. There is a place within the site for you to change your preference from auto renewal to manual renewal within the "Terms of Service". Most of the information is self-explanatory and right there for you to read.
Like others, I found it to be a bit overwhelming for someone who has never done this before but when I had questions, I called their customer service number which you can find by googling in Classmates customer service. I called and all my questions were answered and I was treated courteously. I would consider doing business with them again in the future. So far, nothing but good luck but I don't speak beyond what I have experienced so far.

Classmates.com billed my credit card for 1 year Gold membership. I contacted them today to downgrade to a "free" account and have the charge refunded. According to Alexis, the automatic renewal policy is documented on the membership form and the terms of service. I upgraded to Gold membership over a year ago, so there is no way for me to confirm what she said. She also said there are no refunds for Gold membership. The company sends numerous emails about alleged activity on my profile, but they can't be bothered to send a message reminding me that they're going to renew my membership. I think this is sneaky, on purpose.
Alexis terminated our chat session before I could ask a follow-up question about canceling my service. I sent an email to Classmates.com using their help web page, requesting that they terminate my account. I have not heard back from them. Consequences: $39.00 charge on my credit card bill for a service that I no longer use.

A year ago I subscribed to Classmates.com, charging the fee to a credit card. My card has now been charged $39 for a one year renewal even though I didn't sign up for automatic renewal and wasn't informed this was about to happen. I easily reached someone at Classmates, using a phone number on my credit card bill and was told I couldn't get a refund (even a partial one). I called my credit card company about this and was told they would withhold payment and that if I get charged again, I should let the card company know.
Those of you in similar situations should contact your credit card companies as soon as you get an improper charge and talk with the dispute resolution office if there is one. Since my credit card company won't pay the disputed charge, I may not have any damage but it's too soon to tell. I guess the worst would be a $39 charge.
