I'm writing this review because people need to pass on this prepaid card. Charges for everything, no itemized billing that is correct, crazy charges appear out of nowhere, they lost $370 and just pointed fingers at another company I was getting a refund from, idk where to start to be honest. I was refunded $370 from a site I didn't spend the cash on after reading they didn't have what I wanted. So they refunded my $370. It took a week or more to do and said -370, then a day later +$370 pending. Next morning I logged on to see if it was refunded and it was, so no harm done yet for this particular problem until later that day, I logged back into my Vanilla account and the $370 was -$370 again and off my balance.
I called because they have no online help and was told the company that had refunded the cash had taken it back, lol. Well they had proof, they refunded - wish I could say the same for Vanilla. It's just gone, I'll never see it again. Do they give a chit? Nope, not at all. I won't even waste my time calling again. They charge me every time I look at the card I think. Nothing ever adds up correct on my balance and I get $5-$40 random charges from places I've never used my card at or like iTunes, I just spent $4.99 and got a $38 and change charge but no $4.99 plus tax charge. I can go on but I'll simply just say if you need a prepaid credit card don't use MyVanilla or NetSpend. Set up a PayPal account and get their MasterCard (or visa if they have them) not the ones in the stores. Get the online card, it's free to get 1. They only charge $3.95 to load it.
Other than that there's no other fees and they pay me about $1.50 a month for having the card as a promotional deal. Also PayPal is easy to use and I've never had a single problem with them over my 5-6 years I've had my PayPal account. I'm paying for some Redbox movies then cutting the Vanilla Visa card up. The fees alone are worth not using Vanilla, I was paying about $30 a month in charges to use it. .50 cents no matter what - if you buy a piece of gum it charges you. I wasn't about to pulse anything out that costs anywhere from $3.50 to $9.50. Hey but they are very polite on the phone while ripping you off and laughing. I should have researched better before loading that money pit. I have $22.04 left on it. After it's gone I'm done! I'm only leaving a review in case it changes 1 persons mind about this prepaid card. No order number needed, just leaving feedback. Thanks.

This company is a complete scam. I purchased a card for $35, and was not able to use the card because it was already used. I didn't get to set up a pin # or anything. I call their office and they treated me as if I was a criminal. Very smug and rude. They need to be put in jail because they are running a scam.

1 was given 2 gift cards from my coworkers after the death of my son ($150 and $250) that would be use for the urn to hold his ashes. Very considerate coworkers! Upon trying to use the $150 card was told it was not activated properly. I returned to store of purchase (I had receipts), they did it again, the same way, and still was not activated. I copied every piece of information the Vanilla Visa people requested and faxed it to them. A month later the card was now activated.
Next, the $250 card. Had a balance of $0 when I tried to use it. Apparently it was used in another province TWO MONTH before purchase!! I faxed off all the required information to them. A month later I call to follow up and they said "the purchase were all legit, the dispute was refused." NOW I have to send off a dispute to the dispute refusal. Seriously???? It's bad enough having to deal with this insanity, but after the death of your child, it seems so much more ridiculous. Do NOT purchase these cards. Ever!

I got one of these cards in July of 2014 to buy things online. The first time I tried to buy something it didn't work. Either a typo on my part or their system glitched leaving the first digit off my zip code so the billing address wasn't matching up. Even if it was my typo the system shouldn't have even allowed it. After that things were fine for a year. After you register one of these cards they send an official card with your name on it. But they sent one that expired in a year. My work only offers direct deposit so I used the Vanilla account. So July of 2015, by the end of the month I still didn't get a card in the mail. I called and found out they sent it to an old shipping address. Why send something important like that to a shipping address and not the billing address? They call it a billing address for a reason.
They said 7-10 business days on August 3rd. 10 business days is August 17th. No card. 18th still no card. Called and they said it actually shipped on the 6th. So then why was I told 7-10 days on the 3rd? They said it would be here on the 22nd the latest. No card. Waited a few more days and called again on the 25th. They said they could cancel the one "in the mail" and expedite a new one which would take 3-5 business days. I said I'd wait a few more days and call again if it didn't show up. I also asked if I could have the funds transferred to a real bank account. They said I could only transfer funds from one Vanilla card to another.
So it's now the 28th and no card. I called AGAIN and told them to send another. But this time not only did they say 7-10 business days but had to charge me $6.00 which is horse crap. So keeping in mind what they said about transferring funds from one card to another. I went and got a new card at the store. Activated it. Signed into the other account to transfer funds and I get "unknown error, try again later." IS THIS SOME SORT OF JOKE? What if I took heart medication and couldn't pay for it because of this? Angry doesn't even begin to explain how I feel right now.

I received a gift card with $150 on it. Someone stole the money off of the card and paid for their college textbooks from Amazon who was unable to provide me with any information because I didn't know the person. Vanilla Visa wanted all the information to file a dispute. No one explained I had 60 days and the time going back and forth my 60 days expired.

I bought two cards on 18 Aug 15, one for $200 and the other for $500. I paid a bill with the $200. However when I went online to register and use the $500 card, I kept getting an error. I paid cash for the card and needed the funds right away. I made several calls to Vanilla Visa and sent them a copy of the receipt. They have been telling me it would take 2 days to send me a new card and they would expedite it. To-date no card, no refund. They are not helpful on the phone, they offer no incentive for holding onto my funds or show no interest of a quick resolution.
The manager for the CVS Pharmacy where I bought the card chooses to resolve it by canceling the card out to issue me a new one and he couldn't do it. He also called the computer and all they did was say, "fax the receipt and gave me a claim number." I am retired and cannot afford to lose or wait on $500. This is a very bad company to do business with and will not give them even one star. Still waiting on my money. Paid $4.95 for nothing. Lawyer is next if I don't get my funds.

My daughter received a Vanilla Gift Card as a gift. We went shopping and the card was declined. I tried to check the balance but received an error code. I then called customer service and was told there was nothing they could do for us. Unless we had a receipt or knew who had purchased the card. Unfortunately we knew neither answer as this card was among many cards she has received. They stated there was nothing they could do for us. End of story. They offered nothing. I feel this was very poor customer service and will discourage others from purchasing these cards.

I still have to wait 4 days to get my money released back to me. I do not have 75.00 for them to play with. This is wrong and something should be done by ftc or something to correct this. They are playing games with poor people's lives. I guess the lesson is to read tos over with a lawyer to understand the complete level you're going to get jacked around. I purchased a $50 dollar Vanilla Gift Card at Walmart in Clinton, MD. I used this card one time at Giant, to purchase a light lunch and used it again at Pizza Hut. I tried to use my card again to purchase gas from within Royal Farms the next day, it said that I was declined. The whole time, I was thinking that, I should have at least 35 dollars and some change on this card. I went online to see what is the reason behind this; someone else has used my card to purchase items from Armani Exchange (NY) and Playstation store (CA).
When I called customer service about these transactions, I told them that I didn't make them. I asked how can I get my money back, and when it comes back on my card, can I get a replacement card with a different number and CVV or CVC. She told me that I have to wait until, if it gets posted. Why should I wait for something that it already took my money? I will never use another gift card again if there is still someone out there taking other people's money. I would never have thought that could happen to gift cards. My thing is, if you can have chips on regular debit/credit cards to prevent fraud, why not have the same thing for gift cards.

I recently used this gift card, among other Visa gift cards received for the holidays, to purchase clothing from an online retailer. Unfortunately, I had to divide up the purchase because those retailers' systems can't handle more than one payment card at a time. That meant that I had to divvy up the cost of the items between two gift cards, leaving money on each of them. The website of the card issuer says I can look up the remainder of what's on the card via their website. I input the information twice, checked it for accuracy and yet Vanilla won't recognize the cards as theirs.
The message I get doesn't say that there are no funds left, only that they can't pull up the cards. Seriously? Why should I buy, or be happy to receive a card from this issuer in the future if they can't even give me a value for what's left on the thing? I'm tempted to tell people "Don't give me any more gift cards - trying to redeem them is a nightmare and trying to interact with the company if a problem arises is a waste of time."

According to their frequently asked questions that charge will be refunded as soon as the gas charge goes through. Well the pump didn't let me get gas so I had to go in to pay. So now I am waiting weeks to get back my money even though my gas was already paid for. Visa says that it is all the merchants fault which is a big fat lie. I called the merchant and they were very nice helpful and informed me that Visa gift cards does this often and blames them for it.
When I talked again to Visa customer service, they could not care less that they took my money and did not care to even try to do anything which I know that they can! I received two gift cards and after a few months decided to finally use them up. So I checked the funds because I didn't remember how much were on them. I entered the card information on the Visa gift card site, and they came up as having $35 on one and $50 on the other. So I attempted to make an online purchase of $10 with the $35 card, and a couple days later was sent an email from the vendor stating there was an issue with the card and the transaction couldn't be completed.
I thought it was because it was a gift card and not a normal CC so I went to check the funds again to make sure the $10 hadn't been deducted - and I get the message "Card not found." Um, what? I checked the other card too. Also not found AND not used. THIS IS A SCAM! I can't believe Visa is getting away with stealing money like this! Now that hold was supposed to be released on June 13 when I seen that transaction was still on my account as a hold not just one but NOW 2 transactions holding up to $120! For what I have no clue. I called the hotel to find out what's going on. They said it could take up to 5 days for hold to lift BUT THAT THEY DIDN'T REQUEST ANY OTHER HOLDS... I waited my 5 days still nothing.
I Don't have my money and the card company is saying they can't do nothing till they release the funds. Once the hotel releases the hold my funds will be available immediately. So here I go back to the hotel.. NEVER HAVE I HAD TO GO THRU SO MUCH. Spoke with the accountant who shows me they have nothing in their system holding my funds!!! Once I again I called this customer service #. Now I speak with this lady ** who can't answer my question on why my funds are being withheld. She was just reading whatever handbook they give the call center. So after like 20 mins of her reading this book and getting nowhere she tells me my funds will possibly be released on July 13. WTF!! How does that make sense? WHO SENDS LETTERS? Everything is electronic now days. So now I have to wait 30 days for them to release my money that I loaded! When I ask to speak with a manager or someone who knows how to answer a question and not just read me scripts from her book for nonsense she "place me on hold," hangs up on me. When I tried to activate the card I kept receiving an error message that said to try again later. After receiving the same error message several times I called customer service. They stated that I would have to send in electronic documents to register with them. I emailed the required documents to the email address provided and immediately received an auto-confirmation to allow 3-5 business days for them to process my request. It has been 6 days and I have called in twice just to be told both times that they cannot get ahold of anyone in the verification department so I will have to call back later. I have asked for a refund and they refuse. All they will do is turn my card into a gift card with applicable fees, and that is not acceptable.

I literally cried trying to activate this card. It has taken a month and guess what guys I still had only a gift card no mastercard. Mind you, you can't overdraft on a prepaid credit card. I wanted netflix. I had a green dot but they charge me so much money whether it's used or not but now I see you get what you pay for. So I go to the store look at every prepaid card (not in the gift card section the prepaid credit card section) and lo and behold here is a $3.95 card that has little or no monthly charges so (let me remind you that the drivers bureau only needs your pic id your ssn and your address whether it be mail even handwritten rent receipt or a lease) they take my boyfriend of thirteen year's id and ss card and rent receipt with signature.
Mind you we live in an inn so there is no mail to here and currently couldn't afford another six mos po box besides they're not allowed po boxes, so I spent 3.95 and a month to spend my own thirty dollars. I DON'T WANT TO SPEND MONEY ON A GIFT CARD. If I had credit I'd've gotten a credit card. Please please please only utilize vanilla ** as a gift card because you think they're irresponsible or druggies then get it but if you don't have three pieces of printed mail not handwritten and your id and your social card. I believe it to be a scam. If my hunny's credit goes down I know who's to blame the only place I've ever given his info out to.

I made a purchase for 3 Vanilla Gift Cards at a CVS in California. The receipt stated that the cards had been activated. I had purchased them as gifts and believed it would be a nice gift, thus the reason for the extra $5 activation fee, totaling $15 for me. When the cards were used they were rejected, apparently they were showing as not activated. 2 of the 3 cards were not activated. This is embarrassing, to hand off a gift, have the person go pay with the card and then have it rejected was not good for me nor my friends. Thankfully I still had the receipt because if not I would have lost any chance at getting my money back on these cards. I am currently in the process of getting this corrected, customer service said it should take 3 business days.
My opinion is that I am not pleased at all with this and will not be using this card service again. I would highly recommend that others avoid buying this card, as when you ask for a compensation for the trouble and embarrassment, they say "sorry" and you that all they can do is "try" to get you your money back into those cards. Sounds like a pretty petty way to take money from innocent people, it would be interesting to find out how much is generated by the Vanilla Visa Gift Card in this way.
I understand that there are people who steal empty cards and try to say that they purchased them, but what I would like to see is a compensation for those that can prove they purchased the card, put money into the card and then got rejected. That was a very embarrassing scenario for myself as well as my friend and has damaged my reputation. If they are not able to create a system that works / a service that works yet they are selling this service to the people it is unlawful and I ask that they stop this practice at once. If I do not get the money back into my cards, at a minimum, I will be getting a lawyer.

So I just received a scholarship for $2000 and I received it in check form. So I was excited because I had to get stuff set up for college and stuff. So I bought this card to put some money on to take care of something ($400) we tried to apply online but it kept saying "try again later". So we call the customer service line and they tell us that since I'm 18 and have no credit history I can't use MY MONEY!! We then tried to prove my address (because apparently you have to prove where you live to spend your own money) but the document I provided was not 'valid' (it was a check stub from a former job).
I also had to email a picture of my drivers license and social security card (to use my money) and since the document I provided before was invalid I sent a picture of another document. But since so many people are calling and complaining they couldn't see if the new document was valid. So now, I have to wait even LONGER until I can take care of what I need to if it even works whenever it finally gets activated. I am still not even close to getting this card activated. When we asked if we could just return the card and get a refund of the $400 we put on the card they said that the store is unable to give me my money back. They also said that they could refund me my money at a charge of $9.95 and my money will arrive in 3-4 weeks. By then I will already to be moved and everything ready.

Card was declined. I call customer service and they tell me there is a hold on the card. Frustrated, I have to give them all my information and where I bought it from and they would get back to me in a few business days. A few days pass and I hear nothing. I go check the card online and they had activated it without my knowledge. Okay, fine. I let it go as a bad card.
A week later, I buy a $150 card. SAME exact thing. (Should they not pull the cards if they are not working properly?) This time however, I have to get mailed a card which takes 5-10 business days. I told them to keep the card, and to send me a cheque with the amount of the card + my fee I was charged for this horrible product. About 5 incompetent employees later, they tell me they will put a "request" in for a refund. Can't wait to see a plastic card show up at my door. Oh, and also filed a complaint. They even gave me a complaint number. If they started their complaints at 1, they have A LOT! If you are planning on buying one of these cards. Save yourself the hassle. They never even called me back. I called them and was given the runaround for a month and hung up on and verbally abused. I was asked for information I couldn't possibly give including the store clerk's cell #, the number associated with his store identifying it as their vendor and a journal print out from a Visa machine it turns out he didn't even own. I was asked to fax my receipt which I did. They claimed a week later not to have gotten it. They demanded another fax & ordered me to call immediately after faxing to make sure they knew it was sent.
After almost a month, they told me the receipt was too faded to read so our business was done! They had the receipt information from day 1! They refused to speak to me further stating I was wasting their time and nothing productive could come from it and hung up on me. I was given a Vanilla Gift Card as a gift for my birthday. We went to Florida and while there, went to a book store. It's a well known book store. I went to make a purchase but then found my mom had already bought the items for me so I wouldn't have to spend my money. I went back and got a refund (I had used the Vanilla Gift Card). The book store refunded the $75 on the card with no problem. Then when to use the card a week later I was told there were no funds.
When I got to a phone the next day, I called and spoke with ** - I believe that was the name. I had a hard time understanding her, but when I tried to speak French and my friend tried in Spanish she didn't speak those either and refused to tell me what her native language was. She took the number of the card and said "looked up the activity." I was told that yes she saw the purchase and refund from the book store. l bet it was no longer Vanilla's problem - I was told I needed to go back to the book store - that they needed to fix it.
When I went back to the store, the associate and manager had no idea why I was told it was their problem to fix. They were even kind enough to try to fix the situation (even though it wasn't really policy to do this.) But they were told they had to fix it, but couldn't tell them how to fix it. Then they hung up on the manager. I called in again and was told it was the store's duty to fix the problem - even though they couldn't tell them what needed fixing! I was actually told I should just "let it go" as I wasn't going to get any money back. When I asked to speak with a manager or the employees' boss, I was told "no" once and hung up on the other time I wasn't put on hold, but I could hear the employee speaking to someone else and was then hung up on.
I was going to purchase these for my godchildren for our summer trip so each of the 4 could have their own money to spend and if it got lost, have the knowledge it could be refunded. From what I can tell Vanilla doesn't care what people think of them - they have their money and don't care what happens. They need to fix this. This is the Second Vanilla Card I've gotten that I haven't been able to use or get a refund on. I hope I'm just given cash next time... I might worry about losing it but at least I know I can spend it! This company needs to fix its customer service or more to the point lack of any.

I spoke with a customer service representative, who informed me that there was a $250 charge pending from something called "SQ Line Call 1" in California. I live in Connecticut. I attempted to explain to her that no-one else had access to the card and that I have no idea who this party in California is, but that I had NOT authorized any charges. Due to the fact that several thieves cleverly use a method involving practically any gift card, people tend to find out "Hey, so somehow my card doesn't have any money on it, isn't actually activated..." This can be apparent if you go to the website and enter in the card information and the ever-helpful "Error" message pops up in red. I'm actually a sales clerk (Fancy way of saying cashier) for Walgreens, and believe me, money launderers, drug dealers, and thieves alike find their way into these cards. Although it's not by any means a simple task, people will pocket gift cards without paying for them (after all, who cares if you steal two unused cards, right?) Open them both up and switch out one of the cards with another, sealing them hopefully very well.
Therefore, when a customer "buys" one of the cards, he unintentionally loads up the thief's card. The genius aspect of this lies in the fact that because the card numbers can't be derived from the package it is contained in, there is nothing the clerk can do about it, and the customer has to go through the long and arduous process of calling customer service, and eventually gets his refund while the thief launders the money or simply uses the card.

Several months later, my father-in-law tries to use the card and was declined. He called Vanilla Visa and they told him card was not activated at the cash register. He gave the card back to me sometime in March 2015. What is now upset is I went back to the store and the manager told me it happens but it is too long for them to look through the transaction.
So I called Corporate CVS. They were able to locate and confirm the purchase/transaction and get this, claim the card IS activated, that I need to call VISA to dispute. So I hung up and called Vanilla VISA, and you GUESSED it.. They told me, "no, this card is not activated." The lady then tells me that, "your receipt will say it's activated, and they'll tell you it's activated, but electronically, it is not. So we need to get an electronic journal of your purchase for this card." In some cases, she said that the card number that they scanned might not match the card number on the receipt, and that's why it could have happened. So they might have transmitted and activated the wrong card to VISA?
Well HOW IS THAT MY FAULT? My money is tied up, not the mention the embarrassment that I got from my father-in-law. I have contacted my credit card company to dispute this purchase to get my money back. This is a crock of BS from both CVS and Vanilla VISA. We were told to return to the merchant and obtain a record of the transaction, and then email them photos of the record and both sides of the card. We sent these photos/info on February 23rd. We received no response.
On March 7th we emailed customer care again to check in. On March 10th ** from customer care emailed us back to tell us that they could not activate the card because the merchant information was not included in the record of the transaction. No one had previously mentioned that this information was required. So we returned to the merchant (again) and had a manager write the store name, number, address, and phone number on the transaction record with her signature. We then emailed everything again to customer care. We had been told to call the customer care line immediately after we emailed the information. We did so, and were told that we had to wait to receive a confirmation email before calling. No such email ever came. There was no further contact from the company.
Today on a whim, we checked to see if the card was activated and lo and behold, it was. Thanks for letting us know! Needless to say I will never purchase another Vanilla Gift Card. I understand that mistakes happen and sometimes cards are not automatically activated at purchase, but no one should have to go through what we did in order to render the card usable, and no one should have to tolerate such terrible customer service.

Two cards totally $1,000.00 were purchased using cash in January 2015 at a CVS store. When opened, the balance was zero on both! Money was spent on December 18, 2014 at a rite aid - ALL OF IT GONE BEFORE PURCHASED! CVS and Vanilla gave me the runaround; were incompetent, rude and shady. Not sure who is at fault but they put it all on me. Spent 5+ hours already trying to get my money and still no response from Vanilla, even to verify they received my paperwork! DO NOT PURCHASE!!

First of all they suspended my card for making an international purchase without notifying me. Customer service said they should of called and they stated it was their error. So I ask them what do I need to do because me and my 4 kids are stuck at a hotel with zero cash. I'm suppose to be leaving out of state for my new job that I now lost... So all the money I had went towards my new place in Idaho and moving expenses etc... They told me fax in picture ID. 48hrs. Max it would be reactivated. It's been almost a week. I call them every day and they can't tell me what's going on. I ask to speak to a supervisor and they tell me that they aren't available and I leave repeated messages no return call. I'm in a homeless shelter with all my belongings in a different state. Tell me what I should do because I basically lost everything but my kids. I'm not understanding what kind of business can do this. They should be shut down...

The Vanilla cards then forced to dealing with Incomm is THE WORST experience filled with more grief than a person should have to endure. They actually dictate how you're allowed to spend your $ and if they don't think it's appropriate then they just make your card Inactive (with no warning, email, phone call, nothing informing you). They do it in hopes you forfeit it by not supplying legible, past reload receipts & documentation.
In my case, instead of just declining a transaction, they put it through but then immediately seized my funds for a week (many hundreds of dollars) for using the card for reasons card was not intended for, even though I have made over 20 of that very same transactions previously on the cards. However & coincidentally, this was the only time I had a balance left and suddenly it's not what it was intended for... so they pick & choose when they feel like deeming it ok or not, no consistency. Finally! After an exhausting, dead-ended, scripted runaround for 7 straight days & nights, they released the freeze. I went straight to a bank to cash withdraw my remaining balance before they pulled another bogus stunt preventing me from getting at my money. Well they did!
They Declined the Preauthorized transaction literally seconds after releasing an authorization #. Then tried to blame the bank teller (who also called him on his false accusation). Gee, who would you believe? A scripted CS Rep from a shadily reviewed card or the FDIC regulated bank? So now they get to hold & float it for yet another 7 days. That was a direct deposit load so now I have yet to see a paycheck since 2/13/15 (that was not put on the scam card) and it is now 3/11/15... and still counting. BUYER BEWARE! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. The laws are much more lax for prepaid & gift card. They really only protect to business to be allowed to do this & not the consumer & their money. The Vanilla card has been nothing but a headache and has now made me take a hard financial hit as (sadly) I live paycheck to paycheck and my vanilla has still successfully seized my paycheck under false pretenses... and is legally getting away with it.

Update: I went to Walgreens and they reprinted my receipt for me. I informed them of the problem and they said that they had had issues with the vendor of the card over Christmas but didn't hear of any issues lately. I asked them if the vendor even told them that they were having technical difficulties and the manager said no. He printed out the receipt and I was able to get the teller number that was needed and the vendor did process the card a day later. I still would stay away from these cards as their electronic system obviously has problems and if you send the card, also send the receipt to help avoid issues. I ended up sending cash since the card took two weeks to get activated.

Don't purchase Vanilla Visa Cards. Purchased a card for the first time from a local Walgreens (Walgreens needs to disassociate themselves from this vendor). Tried to verify the card, no go, but they said it could take up to 24 hours to active and that you have to wait. Four days later, still no activation. Called customer service, tells me that they had "technical difficulties" at the time I purchased my card and that I would need receipt in hand to activate. I have the receipt, but they still won't activate because there are some numbers that are needed that aren't there for some reason. They can tell I purchased it and I have a receipt, but they won't activate it. Sounds like a scam to me.
If I had given this card to someone, they would have thought it was bogus or used and would have just assumed I was pulling a fast one on them. The company that sells these then keeps all the money. Do this several hundreds of times and guess what, you have a nice scam running. STAY AWAY FROM VANILLA VISA GIFT CARDS!

Each time I called the phone number on the back and was told to do different things, such as have the merchant put it through as a credit, put a pin number in. It still did not work.
I called a fourth time and asked to have a new card issued. The girl said she would have one sent out, took my info, never gave me a confirmation number and said I had to wait 14 business days. I waited and on the twenty third day, I called, the first girl never put the info through to have a new card issued. I then requested a replacement card be sent. I was told I had to wait another fourteen days, well it is still not here on the sixteenth day.
I have been trying to call the number on the back of the card as I did before and it will not connect. The number is either disconnected or they have blocked my phone number as I eventually get a recording stating that "the number you have dialed is not available". What the hell! My boss is out $250 and so am I! Who do you have to call or contact to report fraudulent practices? I can't even speak with a supervisor because I can't get through! I contacted other recipients and told them to call and ensure they were activated (information from Visa was that all was good). With the "not-activated card", it took the purchase receipt, my driver's license and Target faxing the information to Visa as well as phone calls x 4 to ensure they received the information and were indeed taking care of the problem.
This was resolved; now I have learned that 2 other cards are not activated - even though Visa stated they were when contacted the week after Christmas. I no longer have the purchase receipt as had been told all was resolved. Visa refuses to do anything w/o receipt despite the fact they can see online that cards were not activated at purchase.

I called the customer service line and was on the phone with them for over an hour, giving them all my personal details, including date of birth, and all the details of the merchant (Shoppers drug mart), as appearing on the receipt. The process was frustrating and not anywhere worthy the value of the card.
I was told that the wait time for activation would be anywhere between 3 (three), to 5 (five) business days. But to my disappointment it took 11 (eleven) days, and with no one updating me on the progress. I called twice to follow up, on the second follow up, my call was transferred to a supervisor in Ohio. He asked for my details and also the merchant details that I had provided the first time I called. This was not nice to go through after all the long wait.
Now I have been told that they have to get in touch with the merchant and verify the purchase, and it will take some days again waiting. Am fed up, and frustrated. When I got home, I went on my computer and went to Amazon.com. I added the $100 card on Amazon as a payment option. Then, I added the 2 $25 cards as a gift balance. I bought 4 parts for my computer. 3 of them came in the mail. A couple of days later, I realized the last part hasn't come yet. So I go to Vanilla Visa payments to see if the order went through. Not only did it go through once, but it went through twice! My card was in $20 in debt! So I check Amazon to see what's up. And on the order, there says a note, "Please renew the payment option for this order!" Now, I am angry.
So I call customer support, which I was on hold on for 10+ minutes. Then a guy comes on and immediately asks for my card number. Then I give him all of the information of my card, and then I explain to him what happened to me. He then says that it is happening to every card that they have distributed this year and the company will have it fixed at 8 PM on that night I called them. One day later, and the problem still persists. I am going to call them again and see what they will do to help me if they help at all. Before saying anything, I will say that once you do ANYTHING online, you should automatically expect something to go wrong. With that being said, read every small detail to ensure you know what you are doing. Because I could have been one of those people who got gypped too. But all I see is negative reviews on here. So I want to be an ounce of positivity today if nothing more. When I got my $100 card, I first checked the reviews. By seeing them, I grew quite skeptical, so I began looking for ANY possible card defects or anything. "How to spot a fake credit card" on wiki is a good source. I found one odd thing - the security code wasn't a match with any of the front numbers. But then I was told that isn't really a problem and that it'll work out.
So then I went to Vanilla Visa to activate it. I filled in the box to the right on the front page, it accepted the card. Ok cool. But that's not where I stopped, you see. Hover over the brown tabs to your left and the main ones you should focus on are 'Assign Zip Code', 'Manage PIN', and the 'FAQ' section is a MUST if you want to know most of what you have your hands on. The zip code is a MUST because how is the shopping system going to know where you are for your online transactions? The PIN, although it's optional, is to make sure no one can use your card, and the FAQ shows a lot of questions and answers that are useful, such as where you can use it, how LONG you can have it before they start charging you to have it (6 months) and exactly what you have to do in order to fully activate it.
To activate it, simple; make a purchase anywhere - online or in a store. I made an online purchase and I filled out the info just as I would with a regular debit card. No problems. It took a day for my updated balance, but that wasn't really a problem. But again, please just read through things carefully before jumping in the water. It helps. SO I really hope this review was helpful, and cheer up guys. I can only imagine what you feel like. But it's a learning experience. Would I recommend this? For those with patience to read small details and know what they have in their hands, yes. For the one maybe you just prefer cash in hand, do that. There's no right or wrong people, just ways to navigate everything.

They hold onto people's money and hope we give up. I'm sure some do. This probably accounts for most of the company's profits.

They would then research, which takes at least 3 days (meaning it could take longer) to get back to me about what they find out. I had this happen previously with the same results. Fortunately I had the receipts, however, it took over 8 months to get activated. I figured it was just a one-time occurrence and gave them another chance. I went to a different store. My bad. This was my first experience with a gift card & the first time I felt it was important to let others know. A week ago, I was sending $150 each to my 3 nephews. On the way to the post office, I decided to purchase 3 gift cards in case something happened. It would give me more recourse. At the post office, I was told they don't insure gift cards. And as I feared the cards did not arrive. The post office shows they were delivered yet are investigating. So, I call Vanilla gift cards to find out if the cards were used & to report.
While on hold, there's a great message that if your card is lost or stolen to report immediately & details about being reimbursed. I felt good, until I am informed that the three card #s that are printed on my receipt are not the actual card # & there is nothing they can do unless I have the actual printed number on the card enclosed inside the gift package! It was a GIFT CARD! Why would I open it? I read all the packaging before I mailed it. Nowhere was there a warning that the purchaser should open up and note the card # in case it was lost or stolen. She even went on that I should have opened the GIFT PACKAGING provided on the card and taken a picture of the physical card.. I'm sorry, I do not think the average person would know to do that unless it was printed on the packaging!
So they say they'll replace the card if lost or stolen yet they know most people who purchase the cards will not have the information they require. And that information is not printed on the packaging telling you to open and make note of the physical # prior to giving card. So, buyer BEWARE! I realize now I made a poor decision thinking a gift card would be a better way to send money through the mail.

Bought it at a 7-11, got and kept the activation receipt. $150 Vanilla Visa. On boxing day, she goes to a Boxing Day sale where she wanted to buy something for herself. Phones me and says the clerk declined it. I go and pick up the card and grab the activation receipt. I phone the number, just a big run around loop, "Enter card number, sorry card not valid" and no number to call to talk to a real person. I take receipt back to 7-11, clerk decided to replace card altogether. Grabbed ANOTHER $150 card, she activates it and says you are good to go. I almost walk out and then thought, no, I will try the new card right here, and bought a lottery ticket. She tried it... "DECLINED". She is confused since she herself just activated it right there and then... Then takes both cards and says her manager needs to look at this.
Later I go back, and the Manager says to call this number because Vanilla Visa won't help her since she is not the owner of the card. While she and I were talking, ANOTHER customer comes in with the exact same problem, activation receipt in hand and a Vanilla Visa card declined... Now this is NOT a coincidence. 3 cards now, obviously Vanilla Visa has an issue. I call the number from home, horrible customer service. Like talking to a robot, no apology, no explanation, just "We'll call you in 3-5 days to determine what the problem is". I frequently purchase prepaid cards to use for online purchases. My prepaid card of choice is Vanilla Mastercard and I have never had a problem with Mastercard. Ever. And I've been using them for years; several cards a year. The two times I purchased Vanilla Visa (because they were out of Mastercard), both times I was unable to register (activate) the card online which means customer service has to activate it but can they do it same day? Nooooo! That seems to be too difficult a task for them. They say it takes 3-5 days but both times it's taken longer and I've had to keep calling them even though I was told a customer service rep would call me to let me know when the card was activated.
This is such a hassle and a huge inconvenience because when I buy a prepaid card, I want to use it THAT DAY, not 10+ days down the road. Because this has happened to me twice (each time I've bought Visa) I will never buy another prepaid Visa again. Ever. If I could give them a negative star rating I would because it's unacceptable that they can't activate it immediately by phone when one has all the information they require (receipt etc).

Today is Dec. 2nd, 2014. The time is 5:48 p.m. EST. I purchased a 35-dollar Vanilla Visa gift card at our local 7-11 store at around 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. At that time it was paid for and activated by the cashier at 7-11. I have bought this cards on a number of occasions. I prefer to use a prepaid card when I am doing any type of transaction online whether it be to make a purchase or to play at a casino. I use the Vanilla Visa because I feel that it is a safer way to use a credit card online because I do not have to use any of my own personal information to do so. On this day since the time I purchased and activated my Vanilla visa, the card has been declined online.
So I called the number provided on the back of the card which is suppose to be for any inquirers or problems you may be having with the card. Unfortunately when I called the number that is provided by Vanilla visa I receive a message stating that they are undergoing route maintenance at this time and it states to call back later. This has been for over 4 hours now and I still cannot use my card and at this point I have lost my purchase as there were only a few items left and they are now sold out. I have been waiting for this item to come up all day as it was one of the gifts my son had his heart set on. So I log on to the site at about 10 a.m. this morning and when they announced that the item would be coming up for purchase I went out across the street and purchased the Vanilla visa with my last 40 dollars. The item came up at about 3 p.m. so about an hour after I purchased the prepaid Vanilla visa. I do know that sometimes it takes around a half an hour before the card will work so purchased it in plenty of time. I am so very upset. This is not the first time this has happened and there is no alternative number for consumers to be able to resolve any problems they may be experiencing with the Vanilla visa.
Now because of their lack of providing an altered number or even website which by the way is also unavailable for the same reasons maintenance. Myself as a consumer has no choice but to sit and wait till who knows how long. There is not any timeline provided. Either this is the most unfair and unreasonable not to mention the worse customer service ever and my son is going to be heart broken as well and this should not have happened if vanilla visa is going to put a product out there for the consumer to use. They need to ensure the consumer can use it at the time of purchase. That's what we buy the card for, to use it not to sit and wait. I am totally disgusted and disappointed in their lack of consumer relations. I forgot to mention they charge you a $4.50 activation charge and then it does not work.

I called Vanilla visa and they are saying that the card was not properly activated. The only way they can recover the $150 that was spent by the person who gave it to me would be for me to send them a copy of the receipt; which I'm sure is long gone. Phoned their customer dis-service where I was advised that the issue I was experiencing was due to my address. I was advised to use my previous address. Epic fail again and so I phoned CS where I was told they did not receive any of my information such as SSN, DOB, address, etc. I fully gave my details and then was told they could not identify me therefore I was not able to have a card with them. What? Can't verify me in public records? That's a joke and a half and so is this company. Never again.
I was offered to use my purchased card as a gift card with a .50 per transaction fee and a $3.50 monthly fee or I can have a refund which there was a $9.99 fee associated and it would take 3-4 weeks to deliver the check. What?! They refused to refund the $2.95 fee for the card. After all why would I want to buy myself a gift card? I'd been a bit richer without it. Fee, fee, fee. What a waste and a huge disappointment!

I have bought numerous cards for my friends and family. I have found that too many of the cards do not work at all, or only part of the money on the card can be accessed. Most people you give them to will not tell you the card would not work, so they just throw them away. Money wasted. However, children and some family members will tell you. I have had approximately 4 in the last 3-months that either didn't work or partially worked. Money wasted. Also, it can leave you in a real bind without money. My nephew was out-of-town and expected to use the gift card, and it would not work (if you have no cash, it can be very ugly). He called the number on the card and got no help. If you do not have the receipt and the ticket, you cannot get help or a refund. I gave the card to him, how would he have it. I called too and could get no help. No refunds even if they know you have a balance. They know nobody is still going to have all the receipts and tickets. Get real. Who are they protecting. Not us the consumer who spends their good money on them. But no longer will I be buying them. They make extra money that way. No wonder they are rich. To me this is fraud.

First of all, I am so upset at myself for not checking the reviews. This is such a fraudulent company, it's not even funny. I went to my local CVS drug store and purchase a Vanilla Gift Card loaded $350 and to come to find out that there is a zero balance. I called customer service and they're giving me the runaround and that the card was used already and that I'm not able to use it. It took me three times to fax over the dispute form to them and other documents and finally, a supervisor was able to help me and at least confirm that you received the form. She didn't guarantee me that I would get my money and at this point, I don't know what's going to happen. I will never ever ever do business with this company again. Be aware people, do not purchase your card.

Called their toll free number and the voice mail system keeps routing in a loop to enter the card number data no matter which option you use. Finally got in touch with a "person" and was told that she could not check on this card because the system was down. Apparently the whole company is DOWN. My advice..... I ordered a game card on one, it minus-ed the money and I never got my game card. It was a $20.00 gift card to a game I love. Then I tried to buy a cheap used Skylander online. It rang up at $4.99, never got first item or second and I waited for four months with nothing in mail. I tried buying a game at seventy thirty dollars again got nothing but them minus-ed it saying it was approved. Then I found a cheap ten dollar Skylander. It said approved. This company is the most unhelpful company I have ever tried to deal with. It has been months since I have tried to get some customer support to no avail. They continually make me wait forever while they discuss my situation with whomever and leave me on hold. When they finally do come back it is to tell me that I have to wait while they do something else and to call back in a few weeks. It all started with my card being stolen. This company was of no help and did nothing to resolve this issue. Everyone I talked to kept telling me they were going to put in my notes what we discussed but they apparently forgot to do so. Never mind the fact that just to get to a live person was almost impossible since they kept asking me for my 16 digit card number that I didn't have because it was stolen.
I just wanted to put a hold on the card so the thief couldn't keep using it. By the time I was able to get them to do this, which was 2 months later, the thief used all my money. I called the 1-800 on the back of the card and it said I had a balance of $250 so I made a purchase online for $150 and used my home address and it worked. Then I made a $75.00 purchase after that. Then when I tried to do a 3rd purchase for $50.00 I couldn't use it no longer. When I tried to login and check my balance I still could not login. I can see why, they don't want you to know your balance and fees. When I called the 1-800 again to check my balance I was shocked to find out I had $2.63 left. So somehow they charged me $72.37 for what? This is a huge scam people......read all the negativity with this card. I should have come here first, I wouldn't have purchased the card. Don't buy it. To be quick and brief. I bought my mother a Visa gift. She attempted to use it at a grocery to no avail. Being embarrassed at the store she gave it back to me (the card was already registered). I later tried to use it myself a few weeks later at a restaurant. The card did not work, transaction was declined. I called Visa and the balance on the card was now only a few $. What happened was Visa thinks the transaction went through so they are holding my funds, and I have to wait 7 days until the funds are release (the merchant did not receive any funds, confirmed by the merchant). Well damn, this sucked again.
2 weeks later, I try to use the same card to order food online, after confirming the funds are back on it. Doesn't, the card decline because there is a 20% gratuity Visa withholds in case I want to pay a tip (as if I can't plan and do math by myself if I need a tip)? After calling Visa, I learn of the 20% they hold (ridiculous) and I change the amount of the transaction to accommodate the 20% being held. Unbelievable what happens now, the card is declined, and the funds are now on hold for 7 days.
I contact the online merchant and they haven't received any funds. I contact Visa they are helpless to do anything. At this point, I am just ** hungry and I don't have another credit card. To be brief I end up 3 calling the merchant with Visa and they want the merchant to send a FAX with a letter stating a number of things so they can release my money. So the merchant does help me (they were great in all of this). They send the letter through fax to Visa, and doesn't the people who run the Visa fax machine leave for the day, I missed them by 8 minutes!! This was after I spent 2 HOURS on the phone sorting this out. Now Visa can't do anything. So I make some butter and toast and go to bed.
Now I call them the next day to see if the funds are on the card, nope, now what? Visa wants a signature from the merchant, so the merchant has to fax AGAIN just so I can release my OWN money. All of this is not to mention it was declined while trying to use PayPal 3x. RIDICULOUS, if they gave me the card for free, they can make it as difficult as possible. That's not the case, that's my money plus a FEE. Basically the card doesn't work, it didn't do what it said and I want a refund in cash, including the FEE.

Us Canadians can't even login to Hulu without using the Windows app "Hide My IP" to pretend to register from the U.S. All Hulu needs is the card number, expiry, 3-digit CVV and Zip code. One minor problem is, when you register the Hulu card, it does not take effect immediately. So, if you immediately then you try to register on Hulu after registering your Vanilla M/C, it denies the credit, and the attempt shows as a $1.07 credit on the Account History transaction. I purchased a Vanilla Visa Gift Card on the 4th of July because I needed to make some online purchases and all I had was cash while I waited for my new debit card to come in the mail. The banks are closed because of the holiday so I chose to go the Gift Card route. I googled 'gift card online purchasing', and immediately was presented with several links leading to information, all visa. The overview of the process to make online purchases seemed straight forward enough, log in, register, have fun shopping. Easy, right? Not so much. After purchasing my card, I read the small paper instructions, went to the www.vanillavisa.com website and proceeded to try 'registering' my card. There was no option for registration. I found this strange, because any online purchase I have ever made implicitly requires personal information to be entered and verified with what the bank account has on file.
Previously considering this, I had already researched my gift card purchase before hand. I thought I had covered my bases, but it never occurred to me that the visa website itself would furnish misinformation. Couple this with the fact that most merchants will not honor gift card returns. After being looped around the call center's automated teller a few times, I spoke to a lady who essentially told me the problem was not their card, but the merchant... ALL of them apparently. I found this absurd. However, before ending our conversation, she "matter-of-factly" tagged on that I would most likely be unable to return the card to the store it was purchased from. Great. Punctuated with the 4 to 5 week turn around, which does not include the claims process and investigation if I try to pursue a refund through visa themselves. Wonderful. In her defense though, she sounded sympathetic. So, to sum things up; mandatory activation fee in fine print on the back, because we love transparency.
Inability to split bills on the card (this one is important, I will come back to it). Deliberately misleading advertisement and or wordage of online shopping functionality. Deliberately misleading advertising and or wordage of Paypal functionality. Widely known general practice of a 'no return policy' at the point of sale. Deliberate lengthy and difficult claims and refund process. Oh, and on not splitting bills. This doesn't seem so big at first. But imagine for a moment, you buy a $25 gift card. If you buy a shirt for $21.99, unless you find something for $3.01 or less, the money is lost. Multiply that times the yearly customer base... That is a lot of money being left on the table by consumer who think they are just changing money over to an acceptable shopping option. Oh and if you want to get that money? Wait 4 weeks or more. Will I EVER buy another Vanilla Visa Gift Card? The answer is an emphatic and furious NO!!

Yesterday I purchased this "Visa Vanilla One" card for a routine online purchase... Oh, if only I knew the forthcoming consequences for doing so. When I went to register the card, the only info that their website required me to provide was the card numbers and a simple zip code. Right away, I found this strange, as before with most prepaid gift cards, I've been required to provide a billing address, name, email, phone number, and even occasionally, my social security number. However, I trusted VISA and didn't think it would present a problem. Boy, was I wrong...
I went to Amazon.com for this transaction, and proceeded to order and pay. Just hours after this, I received an email informing my Amazon account has been put in suspension. Upon contacting them, they informed me that the billing info I provided does not match the cards info. I tried to tell them the nature of the situation, however they simply were oblivious to this type of problem and told me I'd be contacted within 24 hours.
This morning, I received an email informing me that my Amazon account HAS BEEN CLOSED and any accounts I attempt to create from here on out WILL BE DENIED... I have close to 900$ in Amazon gift certificates that I fear will be relinquished due to this problem, and if this persists without the proper resolution, I may have to contact my lawyer... ALL BECAUSE Visa refuses to make a simple interface change to the contents of this "Vanilla" gift card. Absolutely ridiculous, DO NOT BUY.

Within a year of purchase, the cards were de-authorized and upon calls to the service center on multiple occasions, I was able to get one of the cards re-authorized. The second card is still under investigation and has been so for over 2 months. ITC has asked me to contact the retail establishment where they were sold and get proof of purchase. In both occasions, the ITC rep told me the cards had been authorized, had no purchases and could not tell me that 6 months later the cards were de-authorized. ITC holds my sons' $50 gift and lately has asked me to contact Rite Aid corporate to get receipts. It took me a week and three representatives later to be able to put in a claim and put a hold on my card. The first two told me to wait to allow the charges to clear, but never suggested to put a hold on the account. The third representative not only put a hold on the account, but also ordered me a new card.
What's worse, part of my pay check went into this account so I was concerned that the persons responsible for the charges would get a hold of my money. After putting a claim in, I received a letter in the mail stating that they would have to do an investigation and would let me know the results in February, it was November! So I immediately canceled my direct deposit and took all of my money out. Even though I have a new card, I'm not confident with their fraud detection program.
I'm still waiting on the results of their investigation (and hopefully the return on my $300). But at this point, I'm not hopeful. I've had much better luck with American Express Prepaid card and just using my regular checking account.

My wife received a $100 Vanilla gift card from the in-laws bought at Walmart in Pearl City, Hawaii. We went to Target in Hilo to buy a $34 toy for my son and the card was declined. We called Vanilla's customer service and they took down all of our information and said someone should call in three days. On the fifth day after no follow up, we called again and they said that there is no activity on our complaint. We are now feeling that this is not right. The gift card came with a receipt so we took the card to the nearest Walmart to get it returned. After standing in line we finally talk to the customer service representative. She called the Vanilla card phone number and they said that card is not activated.
She said we can not return the card because the card paid for and the card we have is different. We asked how can that be? She said maybe the cashier gave my in-laws an inactivated card on accident. I called my in-laws and they said they pulled it off the shelf and paid for it. The Walmart customer service representative said she would call Walmart in Pearl City to check the cameras to see if the cashier switched cards by accident or on purpose. Another investigation is open and no one has called back. All this lost time and energy over a $100 gift card. Who knows how many times this has happened? Scary to think that these big companies can get away with this without any consequences. Bottom line: my in-laws lost $100 purchasing a Vanilla Gift card at Walmart Pearl City, Hawaii.
