Do not BUY American Express Gcards!! Purchased American Express Gcards to two different stores. Walgreens. It says activated but once you check the balance it is empty. Someone had used it, at Apple location in Dedham MA. I called Walgreens, nothing they can do about it because I authorized the purchase, yes because I pay for the card. Advised to contact Amex. After 5 or 6 times calling and being put on hold and get hang up, finally spoke to a supervisor who says nothing she can do because it is treated as cash and advised to call the merchant. Called Apple store where the card was used. Advised to contact the police and file a report. Police cannot give me my money back.

The point and lesson for all this..NO ONE SEEM TO go Above and beyond anymore to resolve or even just listen. I asked Apple manager to look in the sales report, cameras and demanded a refund since someone purchased using the gcard.. They says nothing they can do and they don't even have asset loss prevention. Come on people. DISPUTED the charges, I got the Provisional refund so waited a few weeks to get a new one at CVS. The same thing happened, activated but no money in it. Called both Amex, Apple Store and nothing they can do. So where did the money go, who is responsible, no one seems to take full responsibility. I am not rich to just take this as is. It's my hard earned money and I just wanted to get a card as a bday gift. Whoever is producing Amex gcard, be real because it is my hard earned money. I want my money back and this must stop.

I ordered gift cards for my employees for their hard work through a busy season. I chose to make personalized cards because I figured they would've more appreciated. It took quite a while to finish the order and thanks to a website error, I had to do it over again from scratch. After I re-completed making their cards, the order went through with my confirmation email. About a week passed and I got a shipping notification that also said that part of my order "could not be processed". It also said that I should direct my questions to the 800 number. I called and went through the computer prompts and was put on hold. A person came to the line asked me for my order number and when I gave it to him, he hung up. Oooo-k then. I call back go through the prompts and this time after holding, it goes straight to hanging up on me. Same thing for a third time.

The 4th time I called from my cell phone instead of our landline and I got ahold of a different person. I asked her why part of my order could not be processed. She said she did not know why "they" decided anything and she could not transfer me to the mysterious "they" to find out. She also said that her supervisor wouldn't know either. She let me know that all they do there at the call center is create "tickets" for things and could not say whether or not anything would happen. She suggested that I just keep the partial order and try to reorder the remainder again. That's all fine and good, but if I don't know WHY it was cancelled, then I may be wasting my time all over again.

I let her know that I need to cancel the partial order until they can figure it out. She said she would create a "ticket" for that and started giving me a reference number since they don't email anything. Partway through the reference number the line went dead silent. I stayed on the phone for another 10 mins waiting for a return, but once again I was ghosted. I guess I'll just have to refuse delivery and order 6 grand worth of visa gift cards instead. Maybe they'll be able to figure it out.

They don't let you check the balance on your card, with the website having an 'unknown error' for the past 5 years. Once you are down to the last 4 dollars on your card it will automatically decline for anything, even if it's under that amount.

Purchased digital gift card through Amex, Never even used it. Tried checking balance about two hours later after making the gift card purchase and receiving e-gift card. Was NOT able to check online Or on the phone. Keep getting disconnected every time I would call. Decided to track down CS email and emailed a few hours after that and no response. After 5 phone calls to amex and getting disconnected, they confirm the e-gift card was stolen and purchased made at Apple then informed me to contact Apple. I asked, "How am I supposed to ask Apple to look into it without having ANYTHING for them to reference?!" Their response was "I could provide you with the amount and date." That's not helpful whatsoever since I know the date and amount since I purchased the e-gift card myself and tried to inquire about the balance. Their "LOST OR STOLEN CARD? CONTACT US" is just false sense of security.

Do not buy Amex gift cards!!! I wish I could give negative stars. My son got one as a gift for Christmas. We tried to activate by calling the number on the back of the card and received an error message from Amex. Waited 48 minutes to speak with someone who inevitably could not help. They said we have to have the receipt and go to the store where it was purchased to activate it. They do not activate by simply calling the number in the card. You have to activate from the store you purchased it from and the family member who gifted it to us is not in the same city as us. So they told us there is nothing they can do. Worst experience ever just to try to activate a $25 gift card my baby got for Christmas. Absolutely ridiculous, I will never purchase anything from them, give your business to Visa, I’ve never had an issue activating Visa gift cards.

This card is a scam. I was given several gift cards and when I went to use them the balance had been used up. Don't quite know how since I had never use them before. Try using their website...BOY DOES THAT SUCK!!! Then trying calling, phone numbers change constantly, so what is on the card is different from the website, etc. Then when you call you're given a different number. If you want to piss off someone give them a pre-paid AMEX card, otherwise give them something else!

Someone gave me a prepaid $25 American Express gift card, I love these prepaid gift cards since you can use them on almost anything or just about anywhere. About two months ago I made a purchase for about $22 - $23 on eBay. I usually either donate the remaining couple of dollars and cents to a GoFundMe or to someone's PayPal if I use their website or servers for gaming. Last night I went to check the balance so I could make a small donation and spend the remainder. The first site wouldn't work and directed me to another American Express gift card balance page, which also did not work. It sent me to yet another page and it said the security code was invalid. I was able to go through my eBay account and check my purchase history and determine that I spent $22.16 on the purchase I used the American Express gift card for, which left a $2.84 balance on the card.

I went to a site I use to listen to underground heavy metal music and wanted to donate the $2.84 to their PayPal. No luck, American Express declined the transaction. Okay, I'll try another site. I find something really cheap on eBay, something like $2.53 total, free shipping. Attempt to use the card, which is a saved card in my account. Nope, transaction declined. I've used plenty of the Visa and Mastercard prepaid gift cards and never had a single issue with either. Reading a lot of the other reviews, it seems I should be lucky I was even able to use the card in some capacity since a lot of others were never able to even spend a penny of their balance on their American Express gift card. Someone really needs to look into this and file a class action lawsuit to get the people their money back that was stolen from them. If you are looking for a prepaid gift card, Visa and Mastercard are awesome but you should avoid American Express at all costs.

This gift card is great if you want to lose on the full amount of money allotted to the gift card. Expect to at least waste a full dollar. Making this gift dumb and pointless. Actual 50 dollars is better than pretend 50 dollars. You can not actually lose due to some unexplainable issue from customer service. Waste of time. Waste of money. There are better gift cards that do not rob you.

Avoid American Express gift cards like the plague. I purchased several dozen gift cards for my employees to distribute as Christmas bonuses. The cards were received from AMEX in sealed envelopes, and this is how they were distributed to employees... in the same, sealed envelope. Employees went to use the cards and learned that the cards were "compromised" (that's AMEX's word for it). Now, AMEX is doing very little to help. It is obvious that the "compromise" occurred at the point of origin (shipment). I am out THOUSANDS of dollars. I have pissed off employees. DO NOT BUY Amex Gift Cards. Amex takes NO responsibility for fraud. Numbers for my card were used to make 18 transactions for a total of over $1,000. (The card did not leave my home.) American Express takes NO RESPONSIBILITY for this and will not refund the $1,000+!!! Their policy is I have to deal with the merchants, but they cannot provide contact information, or any information beyond the day time and amount. Their lapse in security becomes YOUR PROBLEM. Give people cash, or a check... Otherwise, the money can be stolen remotely and you will have no recourse. Amex allowed fraudulent transactions to take place and does not take responsibility or provide enough information for you to try and attempt to get the money back from the merchant. How this is legal, I cannot understand.

Of course your well-meaning family member wants to get a gift card for your kids. They never expire, so when you finally get around to checking a balance, surprise! You can’t do it online. So you call AMEX and are told, no problem to use it on Amazon. Except you have to buy an Amazon card with it first. And you have to use the chat help to figure out how to do that on Amazon. And only one of three cards work. So you go on chat again and get told it’s a security issue and that will take 72 hours. So you escalate and an Amazon human on the telephone tells you it was declined. Yeah, duh? She tells you to enter it again so you do.

Then it turns out you have to call the same Amex number you started with, and find out why it was declined. You do it like a fool, and get told that the card was “unfunded”. That someone didn’t set it up correctly, but you can submit the original receipt to an email with your ID, name, address and phone and they will review it in 10 days. Suuure! It’s a gift card remember?! I asked if Amex would also like my blood type and my firstborn as well. Oh, and you can’t use an Amex prepaid card on your Amex credit card account. I guess they know better. And so Amex got the $100 that my family spent... Modern day piracy, perhaps?

I received 4 of these cards from a well-meaning relative. Unfortunately, these cards cannot be used online. I called gift card customer service and was told the cards read as "anonymous" to online retailers, so they have the right to decline the card. Unlike other gift cards (Visa, etc.) these cannot be registered online. When processing online transactions, merchants verify the card is connected to a valid name and mailing address; that's why other gift cards are useable for online purchases and bill-paying.

These cards are possibly the most useless waste of plastic. I am not able to make in-person purchases due to the pandemic. Don't even bother using these at the gas pump; they'll be rejected. These cards are so pointless not even the online gift card buy-back services will take them. I don't have the heart to tell the person who gave these cards to me they're useless, but AMEX gift cards are useless garbage. Do not give these during the holidays unless you hate the recipient. I have $150.00 of useless plastic that I can't redeem anywhere.

Someone had stolen the card number from the issuer and used it. Neither American Express nor the issuer wanted to compensate me for the loss. I received a $200 prepaid gift card from work for 'AMEX Rewards'. I tried to load it into Amazon for the full balance and it was denied. I tried a 1 more time and again it was declined. The information input to create the pending 10 cent transactions obviously mean everything matched. I check the AMEX rewards gift card balance and it was automatically deducting it from my balance despite it being pending. I tried a third time for a balance of $199.70 accounting for the fact that this was my third attempt (10 cents) minus 20 cents for the other pending transactions. It finally went through and not denied.

If you read their conditions, they also state that unused balances really will expire or incur monthly fees on the balance. This is a consumer scam and should not be tolerated. When you think about the scale of varying balances from 10 cents or even 50 cents; that adds up to major 'savings' and profiting off consumers who can't use the full amount from the start. I am going to be reporting this to the TXAG, FTC, and any other applicable agency I can start an investigation on.

I received an American Express gift card as part of a rebate on a purchased product. When I attempted to use the gift card for an online purchase, which was for the value of the gift card, the transaction was refused. I attempted two more times and was refused each time. My call to American Express Customer Service was terrible due to the spotty and noisy line. I could barely understand the customer rep, but what I could piece together was that a 10¢ transaction fee is assessed for an online purchase. However, I was assured that after the transaction cleared, the 10¢ would be credited back to the card. Since I tried to use the balance on the card, and the 10¢ fee the card was added to amount of the purchase, the card was declined, thereby creating another 10¢ fee for each time the card was declined.

So I asked the customer service rep what amount I could use to complete the transaction without incurring additional fees. I was given an amount -30¢ of the value of the gift card. When I attempted to make a purchase for that amount, the transaction was declined again, thereby subtracting whatever is the balance of this card by another 10¢.

It is my opinion then that American Express should be criticized for their deceptive fees and poor disclosure of those fees to the consumers and companies that use these cards for promotions. I have a bad opinion now of the company that offered the gift card as a promotion, and a terrible opinion of American Express as a company that harbors dishonest business practices for profit. Over a 30¢, 40¢ hidden fees, (or whatever it's going end up), I'll never consider purchasing a service or product from American Express. And if I encounter a company promoting American Express gift cards in a sales promotion again, I will pass my business on to different company.

If you use it to purchase something online and get hacked, nobody can help. Amex or their third-party firm says sorry. A few months ago, I received a gift card from a company. I started to use it to purchase some items on Amazon and local stores around town. Yesterday I wanted to buy another item on Amazon and realized I no longer have a balance. I logged on to Amex Gift Card balance and somebody used the card to purchase computer equipment in the UK. I WAS FURIOUS. I called the number on the back of the card. Waited 1.5 hours before I was able to speak with a representative.

I told her my story and said to me that there is nothing they can do to refund my money. She said I would have to call the retail company. She eventually provided me with a name, address but no phone number. I googled the name while still on the phone with her. I told her nothing came up. She then said that I would have to go to the retail store. I told her I live in Connecticut/USA and the store was in the UK ... No help from them or Amex ... I’m out all the money. It doesn’t seem right at all. I'm sure im not the only one experiencing this fraud. These companies mislead people with zero help. Beware!!!

I tried going online to americangiftcard.com/balance and it says the website is "momentarily unavailable; we apologize for any inconvenience; please try again later" It is not late or a weekend; it is a weekday at 1:00pm. If it were not such a generous gift that I actually need, I would toss it in the trash.

Please just give your friends actual money whenever possible. These gift cards are not dependable as I have just described. I will now have to suffer and wait and go through this process over and over again - maybe not ever getting the $500 that my friends scraped together for me. I don't understand how companies like Amex can get away with stealing $500. It was supposed to be for an emergency and it does not activate. Please, just give cash and not these horrible cards. By the time this mess is sorted out Christmas will be over and my kid won't get the present this gift card was supposed to buy.

Even though I used it from time to time and the card had almost a year before it expired American Express claimed the card was not being used and turned the money over to the state. When I called the call center I was told that only the person who purchased the gift card could challenge this. When I asked why it was done I was given misinformation that American Express is required to do this. When I pushed for more info the call center rep was only able to repeat himself. I acknowledged that it was his job to stick to the script and asked to speak to a manager as it seemed like the rep could not do more. I was told I could request a manager to call me back within a few days but would not be allowed to speak to a manager at that time. I would avoid gift cards from this company.

Apparently Amex outsources their gift card division to a foreign company because I was directed to call the number on the back of the card and reached someone who barely spoke English and was horrible at listening as well, they could only read from a script and not address my issue at all. We were send a $1,000 Amex Gift Card from Delta for staying off an overbooked flight and waiting until the next day to fly home. Our cards came in the mail and we kept track of all of our spendings on it. One was spent down to .29 cents, I saved mine at $362.00 to use in March when family was coming to town for four weeks. I was going to not bring what happened into the equation, as I hate to use this as a "crutch", but it is a fact and relevant to the situation.

In March two family members came in first. We stayed a couple nights at the Stratosphere or the north end of the Las Vegas Strip. It was raining and chilly this March night and we were going back to the hotel after a nice dinner, only a few blocks away at the SLS. We were robbed/mugged by two men from our walk from the SLS to the Strat. I was pushed out of my wheelchair and it was knocked over. They stole our purses, jewelry and two watches. They were homeless men. It looked to be, which is tooo bad, and I often give homeless money from time to time (I still will, there are many who are kind and do need it).

I called my bank and credit cards, and everything, including Amex Gift Card. I did not have the Gift Card full number written down, which is unfortunate. I did not do this. But I had the last four digits and all the purchases written down. They told me without the 15 digits I cannot redeem the remaining balance of $362.00...Unless, I have the number the number on the package in which the card was sent, or the Delta confirmation code of purchase. I threw away the package when it came in the mail over a month ago, so I contacted Delta.

They gave me three numbers proving the Gift Card was purchased by them and sent to me. Amex said that was not enough information. They asked for proof of my address such as a utility bill, confirmation of the gift card sent beyond just the number. So I sent them the email of the card being sent from Delta, the arrival date of it, my water bill, copy of all the transaction directly from their site that I had previously taken, and confirmation letters from Delta. Amex then said they would still not redeem the gift card. Then yet another manager said she would, and I resent to get an email saying they can't without the fifteen digit number.

I am disappointed and spent many hours on this to have me jump through hoops and then tell me no. To top it off, the man on the phone did find my card information, and he told me before I said anything, the exact balance, but then when I asked him how he knew the balance, he said he accidentally told me. So, they did see I had a remaining balance and would still not give me a replacement card. The whole thing has been frustrating and dishonest. I will never purchase an Amex gift card, and I told family and others not to either after this ordeal. We all have Amex Gold Cards and above, and a few people have actually cancelled them because of the way I was treated and promised false information. Done with Amex.

Home Depot threw out the card at the time of purchase since it was now empty (don't ever do that). I took the items back and Home Depot could only credit the card I used.

That was a problem but I called American Express and they had me send the proof of purchase, the credit card info for the person who purchased the gift card for me, the receipt showing the amount credited back by Home Depot, my driver's license, phone number, address, and a signed cover letter. Only to then tell me that there was nothing they could do. That means $147.19 down the tubes. Originally they said if I provided the info they requested they would simply mail me a new card with $147.19 on it. I've never had any luck with these cards. The first time I tried to use them was at an online cigar vendor while I was deployed to Afghanistan (back in 2012). The vendor processed the order, then advised after the fact that they couldn't ship to my APO address. When I contact AMEX about it, I was unable to get a refund. I don't recall what hoops they wanted me to jump through - I didn't have time to sit on the phone, dig through receipts and jump through hoops because, as I said, I was deployed to Afghanistan. That's the story of the first $100, down the toilet.

Fast forward to Christmas 2018. I received another $100 gift card and had hoped to put it towards a purchase at an online vendor. The total cost of the item was about $110.00. Unfortunately, this online vendor (like most online vendors) couldn't accommodate multiple methods of payment for a single purchase, so the $100 card had to be used elsewhere. I didn't want to use less than $100 because, then I'm just leaving smaller amounts of money on a card that I could easily misplace (which I believe is what AMEX is hoping will ultimately happen). Next, I tried to use it at Amazon by refilling the gift card balance associated with my account. It seems like this would be an easy process which would allow me to use the full value of the gift card and apply the funds towards purchases on Amazon without leaving any money behind on the card.

Amazon, like most online vendors, wants you "Create a new payment method" and doesn't have a special field for using American Express Gift Cards. The AmexGiftCard.com website says that you should enter all your data into the payment line just as you would with any other card (like my name and address, which are not specific to the gift card). Amazon was unable to process the payment, but when I checked the gift card balance, it showed that Amazon had attempted to access the funds. It just wouldn't go through. Finally, I tried to apply the gift card balance to my Amex Platinum Card balance. This seems like a total no brainer (because Amex should certainly accept Amex) but the cards cannot be used to pay off one's credit card balance.

Of the "Hundreds" of businesses that accept American Express Gift Cards, it turns out that American Express does not accept their own cards. 3 strikes without leaving the comfort of my home. In summary, I couldn't get the money back when a vendor was unable to ship their products to an APO address in Afghanistan in 2012. In 2018, I tried to use the card 3 different ways: at a small online retailer, at the biggest online retailer in America, and at American Express themselves. The card could not be used at any of them. I guess I'll have to take it shopping at the grocery store and hope it's accepted there (yippee!).

Website to check card balance does not work. I tried three different browsers and every time the site says invalid captcha. American Express just does not care about the customer.

American Express runs a scam where a vendor must submit a $1.00 "pre-authorization" for all purchases. This means that YOU CAN NEVER USE ALL THE FUNDS ON YOUR GIFT CARD! This means that American Express adds an extra $1.00 fee to all gift cards. Here is the example: Suppose I have $17.63 remaining on my American Express Gift card. I want to buy an Amazon gift card for $17.63 to zero the balance on the American Express gift card. If I try to buy an Amazon Gift card for $17.63, American Express requires a $1.00 pre-authorization which reduces the "available balance" on the American Express card to $16.63. When Amazon attempts to charge my American Express gift card $17.63, this exceeds the "available balance" and American Express refuses the charge. This means American Express keeps at least an extra $1.00 on every gift card it sells.

I used the card 3 times and each time, the balance was taken out twice, so when I should have had money left on the card, I had a negative balance. I decided to call the company only to find there is no way to get a live person on the phone for a gift card. Needless to say, I will never buy or use one of these again!

I have a warning for anyone who has an American Express Gift Card and wants to use it in a restaurant. When you use the card, even if you write zero for a tip and give a cash tip, the card will automatically take off 20% for a tip. When I called American Express they said it was not them but the restaurant's system. However when I called the restaurants they were clueless about this, because nothing prompted them to include the tip, and she saw I wrote zero for a tip and that's what she put in. So yes, maybe the restaurant gets an extra 20% added to the bill, but it is not seen by the server. I will never use one of these cards in a restaurant again.

Then I tried to use it 2 more times while being coached by Amex customer service and it was denied both times. Amex c/s said it was a faulty machine in the store. 7-Eleven doesn't seem to have any issues with Visa gift cards. Maybe Amex needs to take notes from Visa. Full of shame like I did something wrong, I had left the store with my tail between my legs. How embarrassing. My husband received a few of these cards as a bonus from his work. We decided to use them to take a trip so made flight reservations. Issues we faced: 1) No one (airline, Expedia, even Amex travel) could take multiple forms of payment so we could not use these unless the charge was less than the card value (i.e couldn't reserve $1200 flight because card value was only $1000). 2) We had to split out our reservations so each family member was on its own reservation so that it was < the value of the card (kids not on our same reservation).

    3) When we finally got a charge to go through, it was credited back 10 mins later. The refund back to the card "takes up to 7 days" so we couldn't complete the transaction. 4) Every failed attempt we made to use the card they charge $1, adding up to $8 to get a transaction to go through. ****The only way we found to use these cards without this hassle is to send your spouse a payment on PayPal for the balance of the card. You will pay 3.5% fee to do so, but it is worth it considering how inflexible these are to use!!!

Steer clear... Although they advertise that the card is replaceable if lost or stolen, actually the only way that you can get replacement card is if you have the original receipt of the gift card purchase. So if you received the card as a gift without the purchase receipt, don’t lose it, you won’t be able to replace it. It’s unfortunate — I had a $100 card that I made a coffee purchase on and then lost. As instructed, I faxed in a copy of complete explanation, the original wrapper of the card, and a copy of utility bill, driver’s license... everything they asked for — an 11 page fax! Their only response was to mail me a form letter telling me they couldn’t replace the card because I didn’t send the original purchase receipt of the card and no matter how much I try to tell them I never had the purchase receipt because I didn’t purchase the card, it was a GIFT, there is nothing they would do and I’m out $100. What a freaking scam.

They did say transactions were made by contactless payment like Apple Pay with the card's number stored, not with the physical card itself. The rep said nothing to me until I kept pushing about where my funds went. Lo and behold he finally told me that when I tried to use it at the gas station and it declined it, they sucked the balance out into a "hold account". Those funds are not available. I have to wait 8 business days for the money to be put back on my card for use.

So basically they don't tell you there are funds in an account on hold when you call. You have to talk to a rep and push. If I would have not kept track I probably would have thrown it away and been out 40 bucks! That is a terrible way to do business!! They would have happily put that money back in their pocket. I call fraud. Based on the reviews I'm seeing here, I just may contact an attorney and ask about a class action suit! So, if you have a $50 Amex card, you can only convert $49 to an Amazon e-gift card. They are counting on either 1) you give up trying to use the card ("I can't use this at the grocery store, gas station, the restaurant or even Amazon!") or 2) at least they'll skim that $1 that they can keep if you do figure out how to use it. These cards seem like a nice gift, but have so much conflicting instructions and restrictions they often end up worthless. A card is labeled 'Funds do not expire' yet they also have an expiry date on them. They are supposedly subject to the federal credit card act (that puts clear, concrete terms on when they can expire, and when they can begin charging service fees) but speaking to AmEx customer service you would swear no such laws ever existed, since they insist the funds have expired and nothing can be done (even when you point out the clear conflict with existing federal and state law, I.e. a card less than 12 months old that has 'expired').

Then they blame the company that gave/sold them to you, saying it is their fault and there is nothing AmEx can do (except collect the fees for providing this worthless card to you). The 'Terms and Conditions' that state 'Subject to Applicable Law' should say 'Subject to final decision of AmEx customer service, that has no authority to make the card comply with applicable laws'. Try to use these as quickly as you can, else any value in them promptly disappears.

I purchased a nice gift card for the Grove shopping center in Los Angeles for my sister. It was her birthday on 11/23. The first transaction declined my credit card. My bank picked it up as fraud and I didn't know about it until it was too late. (That was my fault for not seeing the AMEX email that it was declined for potential fraud). I reordered the gift card on 11/23, knowing it would be slightly late. Shipping does not usually take the full 10 days to ship. Most companies just say that for safety purposes. Of course though for AMEX that's their slow turnaround and you shouldn't expect anything better!

I called a few times to see where my gift was in the mail. They don't purchase trackers so they couldn't tell me. Of course their response was to call us back! (And wait in line on the Support line....again...) On 10th day, still not received. Lost in the mail. I called AMEX about 6 times. Funny thing is though you can't bypass the gift card service line without an account number. It's a gift card - I don't have an account number! So I had to call the main line, and then get transferred, which means double the wait times, repeat conversions, etc. Multiply that x6 with a few dropped calls and you'll understand my frustrations!

There's no 1 rep I can talk to. They have to transfer me to 3 different departments. And they ask you to reconfirm your identity and tell them what the problem is each and every time :)... By this time, it's already 3 weeks past her birthday. Rather than express delivering so she at least gets it before Christmas, they say it'll take 7 business days and that's the best they can do because they take 5 days to process and create the card. So it's now 1 month late. They REALLY don't care, do they? Don't provide gifts if you can't deliver on time. It's your liability when the mail loses packages. It gets better, she's traveling for Christmas so will most likely not be able to see it until after Christmas. So much for a Birthday gift, I might as well cancel it and never buy from AMEX again.

Oh by the way, this is not my first bad experience with AMEX. I once had a credit card with them and it was the same thing. They're cheap and they don't care about the customer. Worst customer service out of all the different credit card companies/banks. I will not own an AMEX credit card in the future for this reason. And now I will never buy AMEX gift cards either...... I tried to use it on ebay and Amazon and often with great difficulty. The reasons provided by Amex Customer Service - I use the term loosely - is that the merchant is not on line.

Eventually someone managed to explain to me what that meant. It meant that if the actual merchant was not registered with Amex, we would not be able to buy from them. BUT, the only way to find out is by attempting a purchase. Instead of being able to spend the £50, we have been charged £1.50 per month for not spending the money, which we have effectively been unable to spend. I have shared the full schedule of attempts with the individual who purchased the card and they are horrified. By now my thumbs are sore from re-entering all my card info so damn much so I decide to give the merchant a call. Their customer service rep that I contacted was able to find the fault and judging from all the previous comments on this issue. I'm sure you can surmise what the problem was: faulty Amex. But it wasn't the actual card itself, my card had been put on hold because the bank is thinking the card is fraudulent and I would need to contact them to approve my transaction; this is what the Canadian customer rep told me. There was more than sufficient funds on the card ($196.40).

This led me to the Amex gift card customer service trying to get the issue resolved, but to no avail. I talked to the Automated voice machine (Mrs. terminator) and got no help. By now I'm @ my wit's end, so I google what I can about who else had these problems like me. Lo and behold I find you guys and all your much needed honesty. My case may not be the worst, but reading all the other entries doesn't necessarily make me feel any more optimistic about my situation not going to the crapper like everyone else's. According to what I found online it appeared the charge would eventually clear. So then I tried to use the rest of the balance on another website (another donation) and it was denied. However, the amount I tried to charge was on the card, so my balance was now 0$ but none of the money went where it was supposed to, now it was just in holding. It took about a week and a half for it to clear. Then I tried the purchase again with no luck. I even tried doing one less dollar to account for the 1$ service fee. No luck.

I waited another week and a half and went back to the PayPal site I used the first time. Again I tried and it didn't work. Finally after I waited for the charge to clear yet again, I was able to get rid of the remaining $49 (with $1 still on the card which was in holding and there's no way to use it now). Such a frustrating experience and I would never want one of these gift cards again, nor would I purchase one for another person.

I purchased 8 American Express Gift Cards at CVS. After giving these out as gifts I was notified by a recipient that the card was declined. I checked all 8 of the cards on Amex Gift Card website and only 3 of the 8 were showing activated. I immediately contacted Amex Gift Card customer service. Was told I could not return the non-activated cards to CVS and that I would have to fax a copy of front/back of each card -- my receipt, copy of my driver license and a detail of what had occurred. Was told by a supervisor that after this info was reviewed that the cards would then be activated within 24 hours. After 48 hours and the cards still not showing activated. I called again and was told that my copy of DL was not readable. No one had bothered to call me and tell me this. I had to call them.

So I enlarged my DL (they couldn't even explain why they needed this other than it was a policy) and re-faxed it. Well 5 days later and cards still not working. So I called again! I'm now told that they are reissuing the cards and will be mailed by USPS within 10 days and they cannot provide any type of tracking #. Their customer service is horrible. They are not in the US (in India) so you have to speak with a foreigner with a horrible accent. I can only hope to actually receive new cards in the mail.

I received a $250 Amex Gift Card from my work. I let it sit for about 5 months in the packaging along with the gift receipt. When the holidays came up I decided it was time to use it. I go to use it at a local store and it shows the balance is only $52. I immediately call Amex Gift Card customer service and am connected to someone in another country whom I can barely understand. It's obvious the customer service representatives (I have spoken to several during my still ongoing ordeal), read from some sort of script and are only allowed to say about 10 different responses. Completely useless. Anyhow, during my conversation it was revealed my card was used by a known fraudulent merchant that they have had issues with in the past.

It took some digging for me to finally get "Victor" to admit that. He at first told me the merchant's name, and then the address. He told me the address was in the US and when I tried to look up the merchant and address, they did not exist. I knew it was not a valid address immediately. He was unable to even give me a city or state. He then admitted it was a known fraudulent merchant whom they have had issues with in the past. In my opinion this should have been sufficient evidence to refund the gift card, but it was not. I had to fax in my ID, front and back of gift card itself, front and back of packaging, and the gift receipt. In about 10 days they mail me a response, which basically says the receipt would not suffice because it is not the original purchase receipt. Why would they require the original receipt when it is a GIFT CARD, which is usually given as a GIFT and I had the GIFT receipt. I don't think people usually buy GIFT cards for themselves?

I had to call for the third time and the customer representative kept having to put me on hold so he could go talk to "the people that handle the issue". I was not allowed to talk directly to these people which was absolutely ridiculous. I had to stay on hold while he played messenger. Unacceptable. Basically I was given the same response. Without the original purchase receipt they could not do anything, regardless if they knew there had been fraudulent activity/security breach. So in a nutshell, American Express will do nothing even if they acknowledge there is fraud. They put sole responsibility on the consumer.

GIFT CARDS tend to be given as GIFTS, so it is highly unlikely that the recipient would have access to an original purchase receipt, AND a GIFT receipt will not suffice. Completely illogical. Furthermore, how many gift givers really keep the receipts for months on end? American Express is one of the richest companies in the world and somehow still manages to be the worst company I have ever dealt with. Ultimately they still got paid and have proven they don't care if the consumer takes the hit.

No problem to purchase some painting supplies from Lowes for $115. The card didn't get used for a while and sat in my room with the other gift card still in the package. 2 months later, I tried to used the gift card today and found that it had a balance of $0. Looked into it and saw there was a transaction from "BARNES BROTHERS PRODUCT 28 FAIRMONT S CAMBRIDGE 840 - Partial Purchase", which I did not make.

I called the 800 number and it turns out that they have had issues with this specific account. To get the money back on that card I need to send them the original gift card receipt (who keeps these), an ID, the scanned gift card, and a letter stating why I'm sending this information to some fax number. I am going to try this but definitely not holding my breath. Luckily my family kept the original receipts. The card was purchased from Walgreens BTW. So I figured maybe the info got stolen when I used it from Lowes, who knows...

Then I opened the other card, brand new from the sealed envelope, trying to make the purchase and come to find out it has $5 left on it!!! Brand new right out of the box. Three transactions totaling $455 were made with it online, before I even opened it up. I called the 800 number again and was told by the foreigners that there was nothing I could do... Not giving up I spoke with their supervisor with the same response... Not giving up again I spoke with their supervisor who informed me to fax the same info for the other card and they will get back to me within 10 business days. I'm perturbed to say the least that AMEX has such a janky gift card program, but reluctantly I am going to fax them all the info they want and hope for the best. But honestly I probably lost $900. During October, I relocated BUT I made the change in Sprint system. However, American Express maintained the old address (which have new people in the home) but I notified them on November 11 of the address change. The card was to be received between the dates of November 10-13. Anyhow, I spoke with a supervisor at American Express on November 11 who promised to REISSUE the card and send it via UPS. I called AE on November 24 for a status.

Their inexperienced, ignorant "I'm going to get paid whether you get your card or not" Customer Service Representative confirmed that it was mailed out on November 17. I would have to wait for UPS to deliver it. No tracking information available. I called again on November 28 and another AE Supervisor informed me that the card was not reissued. It now leaves Sprint, their customer, in an awkward position. As far as I am concerned, AE are not fulfilling their contractual obligation to Sprint, leaving Sprint not fulfilling their obligation to me, their customer. American Express fails to be the quality business that is so represented by their many marketing tools.

I've always liked the idea of a gift card over cash and so I tried to order a generous gift card for a star employee for her wedding, paying a little extra for next-day delivery in time for the wedding and honeymoon. After I ordered it (and charged it to my business platinum card) I read some pretty bad reviews here and was concerned that my employee might 1) lose it and not be able to replace it; or 2) be charged some kind of monthly fee. I had also not realized that the card cannot be used outside of the US and because this was a wedding gift where it might logically be used on the honeymoon (outside of US), I had second thoughts.

When I called to cancel it, the person on the other end of the phone tried very strenuously to talk me out of it. She told me it had already gone out. When I insisted she said I could void it, but that the couple would still get the card in the mail. I ultimately decided to go ahead and let the order stand, so that it would be received before the honeymoon trip, and I would explain and apologize about restrictions. But it would still be a nice and timely gift.

Two days went by. Then I received a message about a fraud alert. When I returned the call, I got voicemail. I called again later (not sure if I would have ever received a call back), I was told that AmEx suspected fraud. So I answered all the questions and they told me it had been reinstated and that the gift card would go out in two days. Not only was that too late, but of course I felt angry because I'd been told it had gone out. I completely understand about the prevalence of fraud, but the experience should have been handled better. I wasn't treated with respect, and I honestly think the customer service outsourcing has gone a bit too far. The people I spoke to sounded like robots and the entire stupid experience undermined my confidence in the American Express brand. If this is how they treat cardholders looking to spend thousands of dollars, then I can take my business elsewhere.

First off, this is a gift card from American Express... a company that is known for their customer service which is the reason I choose them. Secondly, their customer service for gift cards is overseas and their representatives read from a script and are incompetent. They can barely handle simple questions on their own. I use the word "they" because it was not the first time I encountered this with American Express and secondary services. Also, they have "American" in their name and they outsource to India? Just a thought..

The story started like this. Several weeks ago, my fiancee ordered a gift card for $100. We waited a week or two for delivery and then never received a response from the deliverer. That is when I started to get worried so I we called and asked them to confirm delivery address. We were put on hold 3 times for simple questions like to confirm the order number. By this point it sounded like the representative was reading from a script. We were basically told it was used and there was nothing they can do.

We asked to speak to a supervisor and asked questions like what was the tracking number, when it was delivered, and where was it used. They did not have a tracking number which is strange because they charged $6 for delivery fee. Personally, I know for a fact that for $6 at USPS you get a tracking number using priority mail when you send a flat envelope. In conclusion, we will never use Amex gift cards again and as a almost 13 years Amex credit card holder, I have begun to question their quality.

He gave me a one time only free month for all the issues this stupid AMEX gift card was giving me. He said "so go try to spend it somewhere else (these cards are non-returnable/refundable.)" Fine, so I lost a set of cosmetic teeth I previously got from IMAKO. These are great, very great temporary solution to teeth issues. Anyways, since they cost $34.95, I thought perfect I'll just get online like I did the first time and order them using this gift card. I clicked the tag for gift cards, entered the AMEX info. It looked like it was trying to process but then would just stop and I'm looking at the same screen. I continue to hit "proceed" or "continue" to get my payment to go through. Eventually I got a message saying something to the effect, this is working.

I go online to check the balance on the AMEX card, $11. Every time I hit proceed/continue there was a charge and it appears as this PAYPAL MARK AVS $1.00 with a long reference number. I tried emailing PAYPAL, but because I don't remember my login info, they won't accept an email from me. Per the email they sent (said I had to do some confirmation bs, well I can't because idk my password), so their email says we want to help you but we can't if I don't ask my question from a confirmed account.

I emailed IMAKO, hopefully they will be able to help since their site uses this system, the money has to be somewhere. ln the meantime, I can't smile cause my cosmetic teeth are missing and more so because of what this stupid AMEX card is putting me through. I'M SO upset. That was literally my last money. Needed replacement of teeth for nursing rotations. I won't smile without them. DO NOT EVER BUY AMERICAN EXPRESS GIFT CARD. I contacted the PO and they supposedly would take care of it. I had to fax them receipt, front/back image of Amex card, driver license. Weeks passed with no progress with Amex. I contact the customer service number on the back of the card and Amex told me they have no record of any kind about this card number. I faxed them the documents myself - multiple times. Each time Amex claims to never have gotten any documents.

At some point they must have received the receipt because I got a call from the "concern team" in India with an case ID number. I faxed the "missing documents" a couple of more times and each time Amex claims they never received them although on my fax record it says it was sent OK. I faxed from Staples and from efax online. I called back the number from India and got someone on the line and asked for an email address which they reluctantly provided. I emailed the same documents and called back. They received everything in the email but did not want to respond to the email stating that all received OK. Almost 48 hours passed but I did get that email confirmation. However, it is almost 2 weeks later and I have not heard a thing.

Please note that the customer service reached by the number on the back of the card cannot see any updates to a case the "concern" team is working on since latter does not update the computer system. So it is futile to call customer service. Why is Amex allowed to continue this racket? This foolishness is designed to wear people down so they give up and Amex gets to keep all that money from cards that do not work. Even when declined, the funds are still taken (or "held temporarily") from the card, which makes no sense. I have yet to get back a $21 DECLINED amount. When used at a gas station on an outside gas pump, all of your funds will be depleted immediately and held for up to 8 business days. It took 4 for the balance from that to return to my card. I had simply gotten $15 in gas and the remaining funds were then held for 4 days. Sometimes they don't even return those funds, unless you complain. And don't get me started on the "customer service" over in India.

I didn't want to write this because I'm going to get furious again just thinking about it. But they need another person coming forward. This has got to be illegal. My mom's cousin in MA bought me a $25 gift card (with OUTRAGEOUS "purchase charge" of $5, mind you) at a Walgreens near Boston, MA in December as a graduation gift. I didn't send out announcements, I didn't ask for any gifts, she is absolutely not made of money, and she did this because she's the sweetest old lady in the world. She made sure to send the card along with a gift receipt from Walgreens, because she "had heard that sometimes gift cards might not get loaded properly". When you're right, you're right.

I went online to confirm the balance shortly after I got the card, and the website said to call Amex. So I called Amex, and here's how it went. Poor sucker in India said the card was not activated by the cashier, and told me what documents I need to FAX (SERIOUSLY? FAX??!?!) to them, including a DRIVER'S LICENSE and all packaging, front & back of card, and the receipt. After a few more calls, a couple of months later, I determined they were really serious about these insane requirements. I took photos of everything I had, including the gift receipt, and used myfax.com (probably incredibly not secure!!) to send a pdf of everything to them.

After 8 days of silence, I get a letter (A. LETTER.) saying that the receipt was not good enough. So I called again. Turns out they needed the original purchase receipt with method of payment, only they couldn't really get that idea across because they are in INDIA and they're reading off a GD cue card. I didn't want to get mad and yell at them because they're just trying to make their ** wages and get through the day.

So I went back and forth with multiple Indians in India trying to explain why it is absolutely not possible for me to provide any additional documentation for my TWENTY-FIVE USD GIFT CARD but their ONLY RESPONSE is always "I understand, but we need the original purchase receipt to proceed with your case"... NO YOU OBVIOUSLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND, AT ALL.

They wanted me to get the people at Walgreens in Boston (I am in VA) to call them to confirm the purchase. Like some wage worker at a pharmacy is going to do that!!! So I called them anyway, and as it turns out they can't look up receipts from December, in May. So my mom's nice cousin lost $30. She really definitely couldn't afford to just throw away. She got a thank-you from me right away in January and I haven't told her she was actually ROBBED by one of the BIGGEST SCUMBAG CORPORATIONS in the world. 6 weeks. 11 phone calls. 162 minutes. 2 required documents. 5 representatives. 1 supervisor. That is the statistical representation of what it takes to process a gift card replacement; not to mention tons of patience. After having used an AMEX gift card to make a purchase online; the product malfunctioned and had to be returned. The vendor initiated a refund and the system automatically placed the funds back on the gift cards. By this point the gift cards had already been disposed of.

This is when I contacted AMEX for replacement cards and started their ludicrous replacement process. One thing to make very clear is that AMEX does not call any customer if it needs/requires additional information to process the return. Instead, through postal mail they send you a letter explaining what it is that they need in order to proceed. If one simply waits for the letters to arrive this process could take months. Additionally, after 10 days they would close the case anyway which makes it extremely important to call them on a repeated basis.

The required documents range from purchase invoice, utility bill to even a driver's license. This is a gift card not an application for employment or residency. Along with all this they require the purchaser of the gift card to call and verify the information if you are the one who has received the gift card. In my case that was the CEO of the company I work for... AMEX wanted the CEO to call in order to verify a gift card. The value of all this trouble - $250. Last but not least is they will not ship to PO boxes.

We decided to use two brand new American Express gift cards to pay for a visit to a restaurant while on vacation. The waitress came back and said that the cards were denied. She tried a second time, just to return with the same news. Four days later, I checked the website to find out the status of the cards to determine whether we still had the original card amount. According to the website, the card has $0.00 balance. After a week, I finally called Am Ex to find out what was going on. I spoke with someone who clearly could not answer any of my questions if they were not part of his script. He told me that there is a hold placed on the card for eight days! I asked to speak with someone about this, and he simply repeated that there is no balance on the card, and we have to wait eight days. I will NEVER buy an American Express gift card. And as soon as the hold is taken off the one I have now, I will use it (hopefully) quickly and get rid of it!

In short; I have been an American Express Prepaid Card Holder for 4 years now. Most recently, I called customer service to try to load funds via direct deposit (I am self employed). The male customer service rep (who barely spoke English), would not give me the information needed and INSISTED that I switch to a SERVE card. When I stuck to my guns and refused he raised his voice and refused to give me the information I needed for direct deposit; later fumbling and saying "UMMM you cannot get direct deposit because you are self employed." Nowhere in the terms of agreement was that ever stipulated. Furthermore, he sounded shocked that I was self employed. When I asked to participate in the survey... he promptly disconnected the call. I asked where he was from and he responded INDIA. Well maybe next go round, I will do business with a card company that values the American customer.

I received an "e" card from American Express as a gift Feb. 2014. I have been unable to use this card with any "e" merchants to date. This "e" card can only be used online as payment to an American Co. Every time I try to use it it fails. I have contacted American Express customer service at least 6 times. Each time I contacted them by phone I've been on hold an unreasonably long time because no one seems to be able to connect the proper dept to help me. They have admitted that the "e" cards were discontinued due to problems with them.

I've been promised 6 times that they would replace the "e" cards with a gift card of the same value but it has never arrived. I've tried to talk to supervisors but that has been unsuccessful to date. I'm very troubled because today I was on hold for 50 minutes and told they will not honor their previous statements to send me a gift card. I know they have logged in my requests each time so there is a record. I simply want this $50 dollars preferably a check at this point from this multimillion/billion dollar company.

Find out they have been taking out "service fees" the whole time. So basically they drained the account. IT WAS PAID FOR. YOU GOT THE MONEY - you should not be able to bait and switch. They refunded my gift card and my reg. credit card and redid the entire purchase. Guess what, even though the full amount was put back on the gift card the card showed a "0" balance. I called the 800# and spoke to Martha (very hard to understand) and she said it will take 8 calendar days to put the refund back on the card. I then asked for a supervisor, waited 20 minutes and got Gordon who told me the same thing. Not the service I have come to expect from AMEX. I ended up paying the whole thing on my reg CC - not my plan and will now hope that I get the balance put back on the card which I can’t use to pay my credit card!

I purchased the card at 9:30am and tried to make the order shortly after and it was declined. When I called American Express they told me that there is a delay of 1 hour after purchase before the card is activated. There was nothing on the card packaging to indicate this fact and I was not informed of this at the register. The only information on the outside of the package is, "Card has no value until purchased at checkstand". Because of this delay, I had to pay for a freight upgrade to get the part in time. If you are reading this, let me tell you at the outset, do NOT use AmEx for your gift card needs. There are much better gift service out there. I personally have used giftcards.com that allow you to get custom gift cards, VISA and others and I have been very satisfied with their service. Now, let me tell you about my experience with AmEx. First of all, they do not have a local US based customer service team (at least it seems so to me). So, I ordered a custom AmEx gift card on phone by calling the customer service.

The girl who took my order was Bella. Order #**. She seemed to have noted all my instructions very well but later when after the item having shipped on December 30, I had not received it even by January 7, I called them up to ask what was wrong and found out that the delivery was completely wrong and the package was being returned to American Express. So much for being careful, I think AmEx doesn't train its representatives well enough. I had ordered this for a friend who was getting married and thanks to fault on the customer representative, I could not get it on time and I had to request to cancel the order.

Although it had kind of already spoiled the fun by destroying the timing of the gift, I decided to place a reorder. And I did place another order #** this time too on the phone (I don't remember the representative's name). He said he will just take another order with the same customization and he made completely sure that he got the right address this time. And guess what, a couple of days later, I get this email from AmEx saying that the order was cancelled - no reasons mentioned. And, it was exactly the same order and I had used the same credit card to pay! When I called AmEx, they told me that no reason was mentioned on the system and that they would place a request to know the reason from their seniors and asked me to call me back after four to five days.

I waited for more than that and when I called, guess what again, they still have no answer! The representative's name was Tulsi and I still remember the way she handled my problem. Totally unprofessional and no eagerness at all to help me with a solution. I asked her about the refund to my first cancelled gift card. She told me to call them back when it is exactly 15 days and the tone she used was so demeaning. When I asked her to please be clear on why AmEx cancelled the order so that I could find out and place the order successfully this time, all she said was that the order was declined and there is nothing she could do to help except taking a new order.

By this time, I was completely furious. I told her that "I am not going to this over and over again and if you cannot provide me a simple solution, I am just going to get it from another company." But that did not bother her. She simply said that she cannot help. So without saying anything else, I hung up. Friends, after that I found giftcards.com that is far better than what AmEx offers. I was thinking why I didn't find this before and save me the trouble. They allow you to design custom gift cards and also a greeting card along with it with the photos (you can upload from your computer), wording and graphics of your choice. Trust me, DON'T go to AmEx for your gift card needs. They simply don't care! Save yourself the trouble!

On after American Express is fraudmas Eve, I purchased a 50.00 gift card for my son for Christmas at Walgreens. A few days later while taking his girlfriend to breakfast he calls to tell me his card declined twice. We called the 800 # on the card just for the rep to say "you have a zero balance"! So I asked, what do I need to do? They replied with, "It's Walgreen's fault they did not put the money on your card." So of course I go up to Walgreens for them to tell me it's American Expresses fault as the money was put on the card.

So I again call American Express for them to tell me I needed to send in a copy of the receipt that my son no longer had with the rest of Christmas trash! They also needed a copy of the stores log receipt; my license, copy of the gift card front and back, and copy of the package the card came in. Well after 1 week of waiting after I called American Express and they just kept transferring me and asking dumb questions about my address? American Express is fraud and they are thieves. I was furious to find out because it does not state on the package or in the terms of agreement that this would be a stipulation. I know from other gift card purchases with Visa and Greendot that this occurs because it would be stated on the receipt or the the gift card packaging itself. It should be defined BEFORE purchase, not after when you need to use the card. SO now I having to wait an entire hour and ten minutes just to use this card. And on top of it all customer service is unfriendly and not useful at all to activate the card through their end. Never again will I purchase or use a card from American Express! I receive an American Express Prepaid card, was given to me through a rebate deal. They charged you service fee after a certain month if you still have a balance on their card, which is stupid to begin with as it is a gift card and it should not expire or be charged for not using it quick enough. Anyhow, they charged me this fee before it was supposed to be charged! I called them and the person I spoke with, "Daisy", indicated that they will reversed the transaction within 2-3 business days. I asked for a confirmation number because I know some BS would occur and I would not receive the reversal.

Anyhow, so it has been a week since I called them. The transaction didn't appear back on the card when I checked the invoice so I called in. When I spoke with this next person, they told me that they couldn't reverse it and that the other person provided me with the wrong information. She said that my card is a business card and so they couldn't reverse it. I corrected her saying that it was a prepaid card, so she tried to come up with some other excuses as to why they couldn't reverse the fee charged. This is the reason why I never wanted to get their credit card in the first place!

Now I know my decision on never applying for them was correct because it's already a hassle dealing with a stupid prepaid card! Like the person before me, I am most likely never going to get a rebate offer that deals with American Express or purchase any prepaid card from them. I made a couple of purchases on it and received errors both times resulting in pending charges that reduced my balance both times. The first time, the total was over $100, so I couldn't even try the purchase again because of insufficient "remaining" balance.

Recently, I believe I misplaced it in my room with $50 remaining on it. After looking around for it on and off for weeks, I decided to just call customer service and how they could help. Basically, they asked me for me to fax over my receipt from purchase and the packaging from the card. American Express, it's been over a year. So essentially, when you get a gift card, you better keep every document from your purchase at hand in case anything goes wrong to secure your **. And the punch line? Here's how the call ended:

"So any of my remaining money on the card is wasted?"
"Um...yes. Is there anything else that I can help you with?"

"Well, you didn't help me with my issue at all, so no."

Left a lovely phone review afterwards. Never again, American Express, never again. I'm telling my family members as well to never give one as a gift.

I decide to call customer service so I can attach my name and address to the card. The guy at the call center confirms my address and says I should be good to go. Cool. I go back to the second website thinking that it should work this time but instead get declined again. Wtf man... At this point I add the gift card to my PayPal account so I can use that instead. PayPal can't process the payment and instead charges a dollar every time I attempt to pay. Down to $132 I go. Great.

I try a third website and once again the purchase is declined by the website but the cost is charged to my card. I'm not about to pay $100 for nothing. I call the customer service again, and the representative is able to wipe the $3 of PayPal charges. How nice of you. Now I have to wait 8 days for the other charge to be wiped and the card's balance to be reverted to $135. Yes, it takes only one bad customer service agent to send away a repeat customer, but that's their problem.

I purchased 4 cards for Easter gifts for grandchildren and their parents. I watched Walmart cashier activate each card, sent them to NJ. Received text that one card was not activated according to number my daughter called. I called with the info on Sunday and guy stated that dept is on MST & I must call tomorrow between 11 am and 9 pm. I did and spoke to 1 guy who stated I must go to Walmart and have them look up info as it wasn't activated. I drove to Walmart and I got the receipt showing it was activated!

I called back to AMEX while I was at Walmart and they said I needed my daughter to copy back & front of card and original box and I had to send copy of my driver's license or Passport and my name and address to them with a copy of the activated receipt from Walmart. I got absolutely furious and said there was no way my driver's license or passport would be sent to them. They then sent me to a supervisor who took 10 minutes to get on the line! She said the same thing. I told them I was seeing my lawyer, who was no help but AAA magazine had an article about credit cards and their suggestion was calling the credit card company who should credit your account back for goods not provided and they will figure the problem out.

I called American Express, got my money back on my account and was told it would take 6 weeks before resolution and I would receive information on what happened. I sent a check to my daughter so my grandson can now buy something for himself. What a hassle and a racket this is!!

I had received an AmEx gift card, a year or so ago, amount $300, expiration 12/14. This last weekend, it was rejected in a restaurant in Malibu. Fortunately, I had a real credit card and paid the bill. I called the AmEx gift help line today, after multiple holds and talking to three reps, up to the highest supervisor I was able to reach, and 40 frustrating minutes, the answer was - that The card had not been properly scanned when issued, and that if needed to contact the person(s) who gave me the card to get the purchaser receipt.

Not possible to do that after a year, and anyway, who calls the giver of a gift to say that their gift 'bounced' . This is a serious AmEx problem, they should validate the card at the point of sale. So now they have a $300.00 profit, minus some wages to the 3 or 4 people who listened politely to my problem, but were of no help whatsoever. I have an AmEx platinum card, so I called Customer Service there, just to vent my spleen. They were apologetic, but again, no fix. SO BE WARNED. Suggest DO NOT BUY AMEX Gift Card, until problem, fixed, if ever.

It was denied and after calling the number on the back of the card... what was learned is that THERE IS NO WAY AT ALL TO GET MY MONEY FOR AT LEAST 10 more days (even the UNITED STATES post office, who has made themselves a representative of this company can not return money THAT BELONGS TO ME!). THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! It is theft. It is embezzlement !!!! They took my money under false pretenses, gained control of that money and are not giving my money back to me.... and contacted the resolution service at American Express (no respect for this company anymore, therefore, the "a" in American Express is non-deserving of a capital letter).

Was told that my money may not be returned for quite possibly a month (up to 20 business days). When asked if they were making interest off of my money while they were holding it, no response was given. After reviewing the above, I wonder if MY MONEY will ever be given back to me at all.... What is embezzlement??? What is theft by deception?... and because this seems to be a crime in which the UNITED STATES POST OFFICE is now involved in and because the money (SUPPOSEDLY) will be mailed to me ... I tried to use it online, and it was rejected by the card issuer. So I decided I would charge the card through PayPal, so I could access the funds online. PayPal said that the card issuer rejected the transaction, so instead PayPal charged me $1.00 for every time I ran the card, meaning that now there's only $47 on the card instead of $50. Ridiculous. So I tried to call the customer service hotline at 877-297-4438, and got an automated response. There was no way to talk to a real human being about this card. This is the worst gift card I've ever seen. This isn't a gift, it's a bad joke.

I attempted to use it at a local gas station. You can't use them at the pump; you have to tell the cashier how much money is on the card and they will use it like a credit card. Well the card was declined! I called the customer service to get a balance and it reported a 0 balance on the card! I requested to talk to a rep. The customer service rep was hard to understand, AMEX obviously outsources their customer service responsibilities to India. I was told that the card was used at the gas station. I told the rep that it was declined. He stated that if there was nothing charged to the card they will refund the money; however, the funds are frozen for 7-10 days.

So the card is basically useless at this point. I asked why the funds would have been deducted from the card and why they needed to freeze funds that I never used. I was told that when the cashier slide the card, all $80 was taken off the card. I told the rep that I still don't understand why the money would have been taken off the card if it had been declined. I wound up using my bank debit card for the purchase. Not happy with AMEX, and now I have to hope they refund the money and am forced to wait another 10 days to see if they do so.

Shortly later I noticed the money had been taking off my card, immediately I called American Express and was informed in order to make an online or phone order the card would have to be registered. I asked him how would I have known that? The customer service rep asked me to make a conference call to the company. I told him that I didn't have 3 way and was unable to make the call. At that point and time he stated he couldn't make an outgoing calls, their phones only accepted incoming calls. He also told me my money would be on my card within 24 hr.

The next morning I called and spoke with a customer service rep and he told me their policy says it would take 7 to 10 days. I asked would I be able to get my money back because in 10 days I wouldn't need the gift card because I had to purchase another card. Being it wasn't my fault I would need my money and I was told no, I asked to speak to a supervisor, first the supervisor said I could get my money back in 24 hours. When I said it was in the 24 hours time frame he change his story and said, that's only if would have called them on the same day it happened. I told him I did call the same day it happened, next he said they had to talk to someone from the company and since that didn't happen I would have to wait 8 to ten days and that was their policy.

I asked him to look at the paperwork that came with the card and tell me if he could find instruction on how to use this card and he couldn't. I told him I felt that was thief by deception and I was going to contact an attorney and I asked for his ID number. He told me it was against their policy to give that out, I told him that was a lie because the other reps gave their numbers. As of now I haven't gotten anything but the run around. I went back to the store and one of the supervisors said they had received complaints concerning this card. Next, I reviewed comments online and out of like 311 comments only 13 was good and the rest was bad. I feel like it’s a scam and I really hope this American Express gift card is investigated.

And yes, it went back on the gift card; (2) the gift card is still suspended. I cannot use my money. I was told that it will be refunded to the merchant as there was no matching transaction amount. What does the amount have to do with anything? If I buy three things and return 2 of them, there is no matching amount for that return either; (3) I was told the merchant had to request the transaction to be reversed; (4) I was told that it will be automatically reversed; (5) I was told that both 4 & 5 would be done in 3-5 business days; (6) I was told an email had to be sent to get the authorization and I need to call back every day for up to 14 days for my money to be un-suspended on my gift card; (7, 8, and 9) are a combination of all the above and now the guy on the phone from India said it is too late for anything to be done today.

I have been on the phone for 3 hours. I am on hold again...LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE JUST TRAINED TO SAY THEY ARE SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE...No wonder help is very cheap...I wonder what the work manual looks like? Just give your fake name and apologize, but remember that here, we get written up and fired for not following through and making the customer wishes come true. Oh, I said, “You have stolen my money.” They say no, it is on my gift card...DO YOU SEE WHAT I AM SAYING? I said, “But I can’t use it.” Their reply, “I apologize for the inconvenience.” So in a sense, I was given counterfeit money. It looks like an AMEX GIFT CARD. When you call for the balance, it shows up; but they have it suspended because the merchant transaction does not match. Still on hold. Bring jobs back to America where we can get the job done.

I was told the card was locked and could not be used, and I was given a reference number (which is standard operating procedure for refunds according to the rep). On May 27, I called to check on the status of the check and was first told that there was no record of my call. I gave the representative (who spoke very poor English) my reference number, and was then told that because I was the recipient, not the purchaser, I could not get my funds in a check. My husband and I regularly purchase Am Ex Gift cards for our children and grandchildren but those days are over. I purchased 2 $100 Am Ex gift cards for my daughter-in-law on 2/15/13 and gave them to her the next day. When she went to use them in March, she was told that both had been spent on 2/26/13 in Tampa on gas and at a 7-Eleven. The cards never left the envelope or her purse until March and she lives 100 of miles from Tampa, Florida. When she called Am Ex to complain, she was told, "Too bad, someone pent them.” She finally had to tell us and we called American Express and they could clearly see that I bought them with my Am Ex at Publix on 2/15/13 along with the dates of the transaction of the expenditures in Tampa on 2/26/13.

American Express has to be aware of this problem of people stealing gift card numbers from the back of cards displayed in the stores that are selling them and are not dealing with it. Out of curiosity, I checked the back of $100 Am Ex cards at a Jo-Ann's fabric shop the next day and found that the tabs had been pulled off of the back of the first 3 $100 gift cards and the rest were intact. I'm thinking that by doing this, the thief can somehow steal the numbers and just keep trying to use them until they are bought and activated. If the thief uses the card first, he is the winner and the purchaser is the victim. Here is my thinking: this is not a new problem (new to me but not Am Ex). There is a pin on the back, how are the merchants able to run them without the pin? We now have an inquiry in with Am Ex but after reading about others with unsatisfactory results with Am Ex, I'm not hopeful but I will not buy any gift card in the future without this problem being fixed. Lesson learned!

When I explained it was a gift and my friend didn't have the receipt, they told me I had to go through an extensive process to be able to use the card.

    1. I had to go across town to the store where the card was purchased to get a duplicate receipt.
    2. I had to fax a copy of: the receipt, the front and back of the gift card, my driver's license, my name, address and phone number.

    3. Then it took 2 weeks for the card to be activated.

Not worth $25.00. I think American Express makes it so difficult to use the gift card on purpose so that they can keep the money, knowing most people won't give up their time and identity just to use their gift card.

Just to preface, I have been using prepaid gift cards (Visa, MasterCard, One, Greendot) online for many, many years. Yes, I have occasionally had a problem here and there over the years of using them. Most of the time, the problem is their website going down or reacting slowly, causing me to have to wait a day or less to be able to register my card so I can use it online (I buy these pre-paid cards solely for online use). The worst previous incident I've ever had was a month ago when I purchased a MasterCard prepaid card and the card number was different than what was displayed on the receipt (they should be the same ending numbers). A quick call to MC and they had me up and running with the card working in less than 5 minutes. I've never had a prepaid card not work on the internet until today with the American Express gift card I bought locally a couple days ago.

First off, you don't even get a chance to register the card with your name, address, phone number, etc. like you do with all other major company gift cards that are to be used online when you visit the American Express website. You have to actually call up American Express and request it personally. After calling them 2 days ago to request this card to be registered with my name, address, etc, I didn't give it a thought. Fast forward to today and I try to use this card at 3 major companies' websites and none of these major companies will accept this card. I figured there was a mishap getting my name, etc. on the card (maybe they misspelled something?), so I called up AE to verify all the info is correct. After verification, I tried and used the card again with the operator on the phone and again, the card is rejected 3 times.

At first, the operator tried to blame the problem on the major companies saying maybe they don't accept American Express. (Really?! I suppose they just have American Express logos on their websites at the checkout areas for the looks.) Then he said it was a prepaid non-reloadable gift card problem, meaning these websites don't take prepaid non-reloadable gift cards (funny how I use MC/Visa prepaid non-reloadables on these very same websites every single month) because of recurring charges not being able to be used on prepaid cards. I've never run into a website yet that won't accept non-reloadable cards for recurring charges by the way, and not only that, but the items I was trying to buy were pay once items, not recurring charges! He checked with an expert several times, and this expert suggested I call up every single website I tried to use this card with to find out why it wouldn't work with any website at all.

I laughed and suggested there was a problem with the card itself or their system, and that there wasn't some evil intent of all major websites tried to not accept this card. His excuses went on for another 10 minutes or so. He knew that I knew that the card won't work online at all and I also knew that he had no intention of fixing this at all. I suggested that he go ahead and reimburse me the $4.95 back onto the balance of the card. At which point, he said I could only use this card locally and then hung up on me (nice!). In the end, I'm out $4.95 to get this card in the first place, which was a total waste because if I wanted to only spend the money locally, I would be using cash. Do yourselves a huge favor and entirely avoid American Express gift cards for online purchases! These cards do not work at all online!

Unfortunately, I cannot say that I was scammed for the amount of the card since I can use this card locally; however, I am out the $4.95 fee for local purchases I could have just used cash for. So yes, I feel scammed in a way. I wonder how many people have bought these for online purchases only to find out they do not work. I will never ever buy from this company again and will go out of my way to ensure others don't fall for this same nonsense. Avoid this company's gift cards! You've been warned!

Don't buy an American Express Gift Card! When you use your credit card to purchase American Express Gift cards, the transaction is considered a cash advance! Therefore, you are charged an advance transaction fee plus interest begins to accumulate from the moment of your purchase. If you go to a store and buy their gift card, using Target stores as an example, that is a purchase and there is no advance transaction fee, not to mention the upfront fee that American Express charges you to initially buy their gift card.

I received an email solicitation from American Express telling me to purchase their gift cards for the holidays with absolutely no fees. So I did purchase $300 in gift card. They didn't mention the shipping charges! And two weeks later when I received my Citibank/American Express charge card bill, there was the $16.40 advance transaction fee and interest already at $1.82. I pay my account in full every month but with continuous interest being added, it may take another month or two to figure it all out. I will be cancelling my Citi/American Express cards. Since most retailers don't accept American Express cards, when I finally found an online retailer accepting them, I tried to use it on a $137.87 purchase. The purchase was declined so I used one of my credit cards to complete the transaction. Thinking I still had $200 available to use, I attempted once again to make a purchase online - this time $89. The charge appeared to go through.

Imagine my surprise the next day when I got an email stating that my card had been declined and my order subsequently cancelled! That is when I got online to check my balance and found that there was a "hold" on my card for $137.87 to the retailer that declined the card. I called customer service joke over in India and got a rep, who told me that it was my responsibility to call the merchant and have them release the hold. The merchant confirmed that the AMX card was declined and that they received other payment for my product, and could do nothing to release the funds. I then called AMX again and after being on hold for 35 minutes, was told there was nothing they could do - it was the retailer's fault.

Tonight I called AMX again and after about a 10-minute conversation with an AMX rep, confirming there was an error but trying to convince me that it was everyone else's fault but AMX, I got put on hold another 45 minutes before a supervisor came on the line and spewed the same **. Again, I explained that there was no reason to put a hold on funds when they declined to allow the transaction to go through. American Express gift cards are a fraud. Do not purchase them for people that you like. Class action lawsuit time.

The fact that Amex can actually get away with gouging their customers $75 and even $300 a year for holding one of these things is really puzzling. Low self-esteem? If you need one of these things to feel important, you had better get some help. First off, merchants are loathe to accept them. Why? Because they're sick of being ripped off too. Most importantly, never use one of these lousy cards on the Internet. Contrary to popular belief, if your account number falls into the wrong hands and you dispute the charge, Amex will always "resolve" the dispute in favor of the scammer - 99% of the time - always. In fact, I have no doubt that if you were a victim of a mugger or kidnapper who accepted Amex from their victims and you disputed the charge on the card - you would lose with Amex. They would make sure you paid.

Furthermore, if you lose the thing, good luck getting a replacement. I was an Amex victim for 30 years before their total lack of regard for their customers jogged me back to my senses. When I misplaced the thing, I was told I had to reapply, even though I was never late for a payment in over 20 years. Trust me. The lowlife vermin at Amex are nothing but the scum of the earth. The bottom line is that Amex is simply a corrupt organization staffed with incompetents, morons, and automatons who don't give a damn about the customer - at all. Why should they? Anybody who is one of their cardholders, clearly, is into being abused. They must enjoy paying through the nose for a charge card that doesn't allow you to run a balance and isn't even accepted by most merchants anymore - either domestically or internationally. Go with Visa.

I ordered a custom photo gift card on 10/14. I paid extra for 2-day shipping. I received an "approval" email the next day. I was concerned as they took a whole day to approve my order and it was not yet being processed. I called and the person told me I can expect it to be delivered on Thursday, 10/18. I checked my mail today (10/18) and it was not there. I am concerned because I leave for an out-of-state stay (where I needed the gift card as a present). I called them for an update. I was informed it was still processing. I mentioned how I was told I would receive it today and she confirmed that she sees the notes that I was told this, but it was wrong information. I asked if there is any way to get it shipped to me for Monday the latest at a different address since I need it on Tuesday (10/23). I was told no.

I asked for a manager and was told they were not available. So I got a floor supervisor and she repeated to tell me the same thing and said they cannot change the shipping to overnight because it's still being processed. She said it takes 5 days to process and I chose the 2 days to ship so that I won’t get it until after next Tuesday. She confirmed that there was no notice during ordering that it takes 5 days to process and "x" days to "approve" orders. So choosing expedited shipping is irrelevant. I asked how I could reach a manager. She then started saying she was having phone issues! I had to call back, play the whole game again and finally got her again. She told me she can place a call order for a manager to call me in 1 to 2 days. I demanded my order cancelled since now I have to find another gift (and I thought this would be perfect). She even said the refund will take 15 business days (even though it took less than a day to have them remove it from my account).

So now I'm out a gift, out my time, and out my money for 2 weeks. I'm waiting on a manager who probably won’t care and is probably powerless to do anything to help. This totally ruined my impression on American Express and they lost a customer. I'm going to pay off my current credit card and close it out. I'm so disgusted in their lack of everything.

A company that I worked for had given rewards for extra services. When I redeemed the rewards, I asked for Home Depot gift cards - three cards totaling $225. I received the envelopes and put them aside, thinking they were Home Depot gift cards. When I opened the envelopes, sixteen months later, I found American Express Corporate Rewards cards that had expired three months earlier. Contacting American Express only verified that, due to expiration, all funds had been taken to cover "maintenance fees." $14.00 a month for "maintenance fees" is excessive when compared to other cards, and I consider it usury or outright theft.

My wife purchased a $1,000 gift card online to be delivered by United Parcel Service. The card never came, AMEX denied all responsibility and admitted the card had been used and all the value was gone. Then attempting to get satisfaction from American Express, she was basically told tough luck. Again, we never received the card. How a company such as AMEX can get away with leaving my wife out $1,000, I will never understand. But telephone complaints have not worked and a snail mail to American Express customer service has gone unanswered after more than a month. They are no better than any internet scam run by organized crime. They are thieves.

I was given a $100 gift card. When I went to use the gift card at a gas station, I had only used 37 dollars. The gas station took all hundred dollars off. When I called American Express, instead of them talking to the merchant, the first person put me on hold for over 45 minutes. Their reasoning was it was not their fault and there was nothing they could do. The second person that claimed to be a supervisor was extremely condescending. Both persons that I talked to were extremely rude and unprofessional. I asked the supervisor if there was anything he was willing to do to help me out and his answer was to apologize and that I didn't deserve anything for the person's mistreatment of my complaint.

I received the card as a gift and tried to use it to make a purchase which was over the amount of the card, expecting to pay the balance with my regular credit card. It was denied but the balance on the card was removed to zero. I contacted Amex and they spoke to the merchant and the balance was put back or supposedly so. I paid with my regular credit card to get my items. I went to use the card a week later and it was denied again. I called Amex again and they told me that the first transaction had the funds to the original merchant. My receipt clearly shows that the original purchase was paid by my regular credit card which the merchant confirmed.

I have received several American Express gift cards throughout the years and have discovered that after activating the card, you must use the card in its entirety once you have made a purchase with it. What I have experienced several times with these cards is whatever the remaining balance is on the gift card, somehow gets "suspended" by American Express. When I contacted customer service, I was told that the card has a remaining balance but is suspended. When I inquire on what basis the card is suspended, they cannot provide me with the reason. What seems to be happening is randomly, American Express suspends the balance remaining on customers' cards for no apparent reason! Fraud! Fraud! Fraud! How does the Better Business Bureau allow this? They are outright stealing money from consumers daily! I would love to start a class action suit against American Express and put an end to this scam and make them responsible to repay all the consumers they have ripped off!

I purchased a gift card to use for eBay, I got home and no money is on the card. So I called the number on the back to see what’s going on because I had just purchased and it wasn’t making sense to me why it wasn’t working. They handled the situation as if they didn’t care and I’m supposed to be ok with waiting 10 days to get my money. They weren’t helpful at all. I will never deal with American Express again.
