It feels like my whole mouth is bruised, it feels like I have been chewing tough bubblegum for 18 hours straight. The pain is in my jaws, my tongue is swollen, my teeth hurt when I press on them all over. I was just at the dentist and have no cavities. The ONLY this different is that I bought a new whitening toothpaste: Colgate Optic White. Almost immediately I noticed mouth pain but didn’t connect it to the toothpaste until tonight when I was researching what could possibly be my mouth soreness problem. There should be a lawsuit against Colgate for allowing people to use this product! Against FDA for ever approving it! Unconscionable!!!!! I will be documenting the number of days it takes for the pain to stop???? Hey will not be using this product again. I will be warning my social sphere about this product.

I’ve used Colgate Total Whitening for the past 15 years but as soon as they changed to the new SF formula my mouth has been in so much pain. It, unfortunately, took me 2 months to realize the sores in my mouth were related to the new toothpaste. I did not realize it was not just a “new flavor” but an entirely new formula because it only states “new flavor” on the tube. Ever since the formula changed I’ve been struggling with gum pain and sores and even clogged salivary glands!
I take very good care of my teeth and gums and have always had stellar dental visits until now and the dentist told me that this new formula has damaged my gums and that it will take some time to heal. It does not make sense that this company would take on such an extreme formula change that, after doing some research reading other reviews, has clearly caused many other people a lot of issues as well. I have changed my toothpaste and am slowly recovering. I don’t think I will ever switch back to Colgate, even if they do fix their formula, out of fear of this ever happening again.

This toothpaste caused very bad lip blisters, welts in my mouth and on my tongue and swelling of my mouth and lips. It took me 3 days to figure out what was causing this horrible reaction. I thought I had just started using a new tube of Colgate Total, then looked closer and noticed it was different than the Colgate Total that I usually buy. The NEW toothpaste is COLGATE TOTAL SF WHITENING NEW FLAVOR. I have never experienced a reaction like this to anything. Colgate needs to recall this toothpaste product.

I can barely eat. :( I'm in excruciating pain and there's nothing I can do, I went to the doctor and she gave me an antifungal antibiotic rinse but it's not helping. Remove this product at once!

Colgate Optic Whitening Toothpaste has been my ultimate go to. Besides the awful aftertaste, my teeth are whiter than ever; however, a year ago, I started with tongue and throat pain (burning, soreness, etc). I have researched high and low to figure out possible causes - clenching, TMJ, acid reflux, etc. I've been to my dentist twice and an ENT to rule out anything serious. Started an acid reducer per the ENT for suspected glossitis due to stomach acid. When this didn't help, I dove back into researching and stumbled upon the toothpaste reviews. It never dawned on me that my TOOTHPASTE could be the culprit. I am 1 day into not using it anymore and hoping this cures the extreme discomfort and concerns I've been plagued with. -Colgate Optic White = great for whitening, not so much for mouth health.

I’ve been using Colgate Total Whitening toothpaste for over 10 years. I didn’t notice that the product was different until I went to use it. It tastes nothing like the old version, which is disappointing, but the worst part was that after using the product for a few days, I had blisters on my lip, and my gums felt like they were all scratched up. It started with a bump like a hive on my lower lip, then it spread around my mouth, and my gums were killing me. After I had stopped using the toothpaste, my mouth got better within a few days. I looked online for the original Total Whitening, but all I can find is the Advanced Whitening, which doesn’t have the same flavor. If I had known, I would have stocked up before they changed the formula. Extremely disappointed, changing brands for good.

I've been using regular original paste for years and really liked it. That product won me from Crest original. I hate the litany of gimmick flavors, additives, and tricks. The "new flavor", new mint, clean mint, and derivatives are are result of the disaster at Colgate. After enduring one tube I told my wife to find the original. She searched and searched at Walmart and did her best. It was very confusing so she bought the best 2-3 tubes she could find (as close to the original as possible). I just tried a pea sized dollop and said "never again, take them back, something is wrong". Then we went down to look on the web. Sure enough this is an epidemic issue at Colgate. I cannot imagine a major corporation being so stupid or greedy. They put the customer last. But frankly a lot of companies today have the same lack of business ethics and irresponsible growth mentality.

It took me a while to realize that the toothpaste I was using was hurting my mouth. I never paid too much attention to the brand of toothpaste I bought over my 40 years of adulthood until recently. After purchasing a 5 pack of Colgate Total SF at Costco I began to notice a burning sensation and my lips were developing white blotches. My dental hygienist said she noticed scraping marks on my gums and said I was brushing too vigorously. When I brushed my teeth, the time duration was getting shorter and shorter because the burning was too intense. I could not keep the product in my mouth for even one minute as the directions state. It finally dawned on me that all these symptoms were resulting from my use of the toothpaste. I see my dentist regularly and do not have any pre-existing condition that would cause these symptoms. I am convinced it is the toothpaste and will no longer use Colgate Total SF.

I enjoyed the old formula bought at Costco (4 tubes), so just bought another pack (5 tubes, unfortunately). Immediately, I disliked the new taste - more bitter/metal-like but I hoped it might get better after a few uses. No, it didn't. A few days ago, I noticed that my tongue, roof of mouth, and jaw seemed swollen and a bit raw - thought I might have eaten something too hot so waited for it to clear. When the condition persisted after a week of using the new toothpaste, I thought about checking for complaints about it. I see from other reviews here that my hunch was right and I am not alone. I am a dental hygienist. I use and recommend Colgate to all my patients. I stopped using Crest when they started using Stannous Fluoride because of tissue sloughing. Now, Colgate has added it in response to unnecessary fear about Triclosan in toothpaste. I did not realize they had changed until my bottom lip swelled and I had tiny abrasions on my lip and tongue. It burned and hurt to eat anything acidic. I had this same reaction to a recent Sensodyne toothpaste (that also changed to Stannous Fluoride). Lo and behold, Stannous Fluoride is now an ingredient in Colgate Total. I can not in good conscience recommend this toothpaste to patients knowing the horrible side effects first-hand. A few days later, a horrible burning and blisters with small blood patches were on my gums and mucosal lining of my mouth (inside of cheeks, back of my throat, under my tongue). Any food eaten with spices or acids caused tremendous pain and burning. I have never had any issues with my mouth before and attributed it to the change with the paste.
I decided to google it and lots of other similar complaints have been voiced. The taste of the paste is horrible also. I found some of the older packaged toothpaste that I’ve always used and stocked up for now. The first day off of the SF paste feels much better (aside from a healing mouth with mild pain). After the first try I didn't really like the slight change in taste and texture but figured I would adjust... gradually, my gums and some teeth started to feel far too sensitive, my mouth was not feeling the same fresh clean that I always took for granted daily before.
Today, I went to independent shops that still had some of the discontinued line and stocked up - I don't know what to do after that. Your entire line of fancy marketing/packaging has the 'new' anti-bacterial ingredient replacement. My husband and I are long time users of Colgate toothpaste. Due to aging teeth, we first switched to Crest Whitening toothpaste to try something new, which stripped our mouths of gum tissue. So we decided to invest in Colgate Deep Clean toothpaste, and loved how it took care of our teeth! But sometime around the new year of 2019, their packaging changed; I noticed sometime in March 2019 my tongue had felt liked I had burnt it. The next day the entire inside of my mouth felt like it had been burnt; making it very sensitive and difficult to eat.
My dentist in the past had said it's the stripping of gum tissue that causes this feeling. I switched to a sensitive toothpaste for healing purposes, and then went back to the Colgate Deep Clean to confirm it was the toothpaste. Within one day my tongue started feeling raw again! My husband informed me that Colgate had changed their formula along with their packaging. Since this experience, he is now experiencing the same 'raw' feeling in his mouth. I have missed multiple days at work. All my blood tests, and imaging had come back normal leaving doctors stunned and confused because of the amount of swelling/pain in my cheeks, jaw, migraine headaches starting in the back of my head, neck pain/swelling and ear pressure/ringing that came on so suddenly. Even when my primary care physician had saw me by week 3 she thought that I had parotitis (inflammation of the parotid glands in the cheeks) that has caused infection, because my cheeks were extremely swollen/painful especially on the left side.
I developed a small lump on the left cheek and it was to the point that I could not sleep on either side of my face and was using a neck pillow that a hole in the middle so that there was no pressure on the sides of my face. But she was STILL confused as to why I would have developed this considering all my tests were normal and I am vaccinated. She prescribed antibiotics, recommended an antihistamine and **. It wasn't until I started to develop sores in my mouth that I thought about the fact that I had started using the Colgate Max Whitening toothpaste right before this started happening and was using it still. I immediately switched, the sores are already starting to go away.

Each time I used this tooth paste I would wake up with white peelings in my mouth which I thought were some sort of whitening effect but later discovered it was my skin peeling, plus a white patch showed up near the tip of my tongue (unsure of what it is exactly) so I discontinued use immediately.
Now to this day I've been suffering with a possible mouth ulcer (still unsure of exactly what it is) that isn't going away, random pain in my jaw, gums, neck and throat, burning sensations on my tongue and roof of my mouth, and most recently my lymph nodes and vallate papillae's are swollen. My tongue, throat and lips are also always swollen. I have something that kind of looks like a chemical burn on my lips and the inside of my mouth (near my lips mostly) that hasn't gone away since and tingles.
My first visit was to the walk in clinic - within the first week I discovered the symptoms. He checked for any masses forming, said I was inflamed and gave me a steroid cream to use on the white patch. I used it for a week with little to no improvement. My second attempt, I went to my family dr. He asked if I would like to see a specialist, recommended going to a dentist and gave me more steroid cream. My third attempt was to the dentist, I was also scheduled for my teeth cleaning as well. Her first reaction was, "I can`t work on your teeth today because your immune system is low" due to what she observed in my mouth. She then said I also have candida and my mouth is inflamed (of course) and prescribed ** for candida.
After taking that prescription with no results and still developing symptoms along with my previous symptoms I head back to the clinic. This time they send me for a full blood test, std test, urine, stool, etc... The WORKS! My tests came back normal with no sign of serious diseases from what I can see on LifeLabs results. I will be returning to my family Dr and will request an Ultrasound on my lymph nodes and throat. Hope I get answers soon, it's been 5 months.

I used the Colgate optic whitening toothpaste which I purchased from Hannaford approximately three months ago. I used it for four days and I noticed blisters on the top inside of my lip and a raw inside lower lip. It was not a burn from food. Then I realized it had to be the toothpaste. I stopped using it but I am still having issues. My lips still feel raw, they are swollen inside and lumpy like scar tissue has formed and when I wake up they are stuck to my teeth. I can't whistle anymore, I can't grasp a straw with my lips unless the straw is pushed back a good distance in my mouth and saliva now wets the corners of my mouth and I dab it quite a few times during the day. Not a day goes by where this doesn't have an impact on everyday life. How could this company be so reckless to people who trusted their name. What can be done.... I threw out the tube so my grandchildren would not use. Wish I kept it for proof. Hannaford is in Walden Ny.

After reading all the reviews and horrible side effects of Colgate toothpastes, I wonder if anyone else has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer after having used this product for several years? My symptoms: cough, trouble breathing, and hoarse. I have researched the chemicals in Colgate Optic White and 2 specifically stand out. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: damage eyes, irritate skin and lead to labored breathing. May stay within the body for up to five days, accumulating in the heart, liver, lungs and brain.Transforms into nitrosamines, a class of powerful carcinogens. Propylene Glycol: An active component in antifreeze. Can be rapidly absorbed through the skin, with prolonged contact, leading to brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. The FDA is doing little to nothing to protect the consumer. How many others have to suffer before ALL dangerous products are removed from the marketplace?

I was interested to read the reviews of reactions to a Colgate toothpaste. My doctor is stumped to find the cause of lumps and 'hot spots' along the saliva glands under my left jaw. These occurred after a few days of using the new Sensitive Pro Relief toothpaste. An intense taste of acidity and dryness was the first indication of something wrong. My lips became sore and my mouth, particularly my tongue, was on fire when I used my normal everyday mouthwash. A saliva gland under my left jaw felt hard and enlarged.
My doctor at first prescribed some anti-reflux medications. I was then sent for some ultrasound scans which picked up a mass of 'hot spots' under my jaw. After a course of antibiotics, these 'hot spots' remain. Because of the time link between the problems arriving in my mouth and the use of the new toothpaste, I have always supposed there could well be a link between my symptoms and this toothpaste. I am interested to hear whether others have had similar problems.

Purchased Colgate Optic High Impact White Toothpaste at Target June 2016 (in the USA). Tube exp. 2017. Per directions: safe to use daily so I used it for one month, 2 x a day, like I would any toothpaste. I hadn't whitened my teeth with toothpaste before and I wanted to try it. Colgate is a name that I have known and trusted my whole life. I did not have a reaction in my mouth or lips until after 2-3 weeks usage so I did not relate my symptoms to the toothpaste. I had no idea what was happening to me when I began to have the feeling of swallowing around a lump in my lower throat after 1 week so I made a Dr. appointment. My mouth developed a blister on the roof after 3 weeks, an extreme acid burning feeling in my stomach and burping acid started also. (I've never had Acid Reflux problems).
Then odd off-and-on sensations started at 4 weeks, such as a mild tremor in my palms, ringing in my ears, mild burning and tingling in my palms and soles of my feet. I felt like toxic was happening to me but I didn't know what since I was in good health. When I saw my Dr. yesterday he asked, "Have you used or eaten anything different this month?" Only the Colgate Optic White toothpaste. He said he didn't think that a toothpaste could cause health problems. By the way, I have a friend who uses this product with no problems. The tube that I purchased might have been a caustic batch? Maybe I am terribly allergic to the ingredients? Maybe it was something else?
My throat after 4 weeks had at times become feelings as dry-as-a-desert and my tongue swollen on the edges, I was concerned that my throat might swell even worse and I would need to go to an ER. I searched "dry throat" and found these Consumer Reviews here. Thank goodness for the post by the woman in June 2016 who said that her symptoms of acid stomach reduced after 3 days of not using this Colgate Toothpaste. I am on day 3 of stopping use and the acid is much less and burping acid is decreasing too. My throat swallowing is improving too. This product should be batch-tested based and removed from the stores as soon as possible Colgate - or at least warn people of possible severe allergic reactions. I hope no one else has to go through what happened to me - if indeed this was caused by this product.

I think it's a very great brand and all but it said on the packaging that it works within 3 days. I know there's a stinging feeling to it, tastes like tiger balm. Let me start out by saying that I have used the Colgate Optic White toothpaste for a couple of years and I loved the stuff; I got tons of compliments on my beautiful, white smile. I NOW LOATHE IT AND WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE! The last three months I have been suffering with a chronic cough, mouth and esophageal ulcers, sore gums, tiny white blisters inside my mouth, swollen lips, laryngitis and fatigue. The worst symptom is a prickly sensation in the back of my throat and esophagus that feels like little shards of glass or a chemical burn. I have been been to doctors who suggest acid reflux or food allergy, but switching my diet or using different meds never provides relief. I have been at my wit's end looking for relief, researching every possible cause!!! I never suspected toothpaste because my symptoms came on gradually and I developed throat symptoms before mouth irritation.
However, I switched to Tom's of Maine toothpaste 3 days ago and I am seeing immediate improvement of my symptoms!!! I can't believe the difference! It must be the Colgate Optic White toothpaste, as that is the ONLY thing I changed! I want to warn everyone that this stuff is toxic; even if it doesn't affect you immediately, it is no doubt doing damage to your oral and gastrointestinal tissues! It should be taken off the shelves! I have an endoscopy scheduled next week to look at my esophageal damage and will be sure to inform my gastrointestinologist of my findings!

Several days after using that toothpaste the roof of my mouth began to peel and my all my teeth and my jaw became very tender and painful.
I thought maybe I need to brush my teeth some more that I may have a possible infection so I continued to use it until I realized the sores were getting worse when I used it and my tongue was swollen as well as all my teeth were hurting. I couldn't eat or let my teeth rest against each other in the natural resting position. It hurt. I went and got Sensodyne to repair the damage that toothpaste has done to my mouth. Once I ran out of my Sensodyne toothpaste I decided it was time to switch to something new. I decided to go with Colgate Optic White. This is very fresh in my mind so the details are still vivid. It was this last Thursday at about 7 PM when I started getting ready to go out for the evening. I brushed my teeth with my new toothpaste and about 30 minutes later, I got a splitting headache as if a knife was cutting into the back of my skull. I didn't see it as too big a deal so I took some Ibuprofen and 15 minutes later my headache was gone. There was no immediate burning and my teeth felt superiorly clean, however, as the night progressed I began to feel my mouth and tongue becoming very numb. I thought it was odd but I shrugged it off and went to bed.
I woke up at about 8 o'clock the next morning and my glands were on fire. I could barely swallow. I went to the bathroom to take a look into my throat and then realized that my tongue had swollen to about two times its size. I couldn't even see my glands if I wanted to. It wouldn't even stay in the confines of my teeth so if I hadn't been careful I would have bit it multiple times. I had to call in sick to work because I couldn't talk nor could I barely swallow. I went to the doctor later in the day to see what was wrong. Something told me to bring my new toothpaste with me just in case the doctor asked if I had changed anything recently. She had a look inside my mouth and told me that the back of my throat was a fire engine red, my glands were indeed swollen, and my tongue was mildly swollen. Mind the fact that five hours or so had passed before I saw her so it had gone down a bit from when I first woke up.
This entire time my tongue and mouth was still numb and my tongue felt sore all over. My gum line was even sensitive to the touch. She did a strep test on me just to make sure I wasn't carrying any contagion. I came back negative for strep so she asked to see the toothpaste. She looked it over and told me that I should choose another toothpaste just to be safe. She prescribed me a medicated mouthwash for possible allergic reaction and sent me home.
The next day came and I was feeling much better minus the fact that my entire mouth was extremely sensitive to any type of spice, even slight. My mouth still felt numb and raw. Even a Chipotle burrito was too intense for my mouth to bare. So I'm sitting on the couch yesterday cleaning my mouth out a bit with my tongue and as I go along my top gum line I got something that I thought was food. I look at it and start wondering what it was, so I take my finger and run it along my gum line and all this dead skin starts peeling off like I was a damn snake or something. My entire mouth had been burned from that toothpaste and even four days later, my mouth is still numb and my sensitivity to spice is just silly. PLEASE DON'T USE THIS POISON! I'll be buying my toothpaste from the Whole Foods or an organic source from now on. ** Colgate. I'm in on a class action if there ever is one. DO NOT USE THIS TOOTHPASTE!!!
