I purchased Colgate Total Mouthwash about one month ago. About 3 hours after using it I started to develop mouth ulcers/sores on my lips, gums, and tongue and swollen lips which continued to worsen for a day or two. They were very painful and uncomfortable and took about a week to ten days to heal. I did not immediately attribute it to the mouthwash as I thought it could be a virus or something else I ate (though I ate nothing out of the ordinary). About a month later I used Colgate Total Mouthwash again and after about 3 hours got the exact same result.
Mouth sores/ulcers are developing, swollen lips, sores on my tongue and throughout my mouth - very painful and I know I am in for 10 days of pain and discomfort. This time I know it is the mouthwash as I had nothing else after using it except water. I have never previously had any reaction to any oral product. This product is poison and we should be considering a class action lawsuit. Why is this product still on the market? Does Colgate care to weigh in on this?

I bought the Colgate optic white toothpaste and mouthwash. The second day of using I noticed a change already in the whiteness in my teeth. I was so excited. I used it all last week and I thought my lips were just chapped. After all week feeling chapped I realized it was from either toothpaste or mouthwash. I now have discontinued the use of both products, little bumps like blisters have appeared as well. This product should not even be on the shelves. TAKE IT OFF.

It never occurred to me that a toothpaste could have effects, until I stopped using it when I was on vacation, as the only travel size I could find was crest. For weeks every morning my teeth have been bleeding, so I brushed them even more, with Colgate total, and it got worse. So I switched to crest and the bleeding stopped. What the heck is in that stuff? Toothpaste should not make your gums bleed, please take this off the market! I've been using Colgate for all life, I feel betrayed now. I want stricter guidelines with more time (more years!) testing a product before it comes to us.

I have used advanced whitening toothpastes all of the time with never a problem. Out of nowhere I started experiencing all of the same results as everyone on this site. My cheeks peeled skin. My tongue peel. Thank God I found this site. Only I was using COLGATE advanced whitening toothpaste. It's not just CREST. I just bought a regular toothpaste with no bells and whistles. So far so good.

I began using Colgate Optic White toothpaste about 4 weeks ago. My mouth began to become extremely dry to the point where I purchased a product to moisten my mouth. The dryness lasted one week because I used a different toothpaste on vacation and my mouth was back to normal. I began using Colgate Optic White toothpaste again and my mouth began to become extremely dry, especially first thing in the morning when I felt like I had stuffed cotton balls in my mouth all night long, but I never realized or thought that it was due to the toothpaste. I mentioned it to my doctor and he told me that I could be diabetic! I'm an athlete and watch what I eat so diabetes was a long shot for me!
I continued to use the Colgate Optic White toothpaste and now my mouth is peeling inside my cheeks and on my gums and my tongue is all white on both sides with spotty white tissue spots on the top. My mouth is so dry and sensitive and food doesn't taste good as if I lost my taste buds! I have lost 9 pounds in the past two weeks and I think it's just because I haven't been eating since food doesn't taste good to me. I have been researching the issue and found this site where everyone has exactly the same symptoms! I immediately stopped using the Colgate Optic White toothpaste and hope that my mouth begins to heal in the next few days as I'm on vacation and I'm miserable about the pain in my mouth and about how I have no interest in eating because nothing tastes good to me anymore. Let's hope that I get my taste buds back next week!

I received a free sample of Colgate Optic Express White beginning June 2015. Used it for two weeks and a burn started appearing in corner of my mouth. I stopped using product and the painful burn remained for three weeks with layers of skin peeling off. It finally began to heal and for two weeks I was fine until I went to bed Sunday night 8-23-2015 and woke up with a flare up of the burn. It is worse and now on lip and inside mouth. It's painful and looks terrible. I work in food business. I believe I will wind up with a scar. I also believe there should be a lawsuit. I trusted this company and their product. It is a free sample my Safeway club card offered me.

I used the Colgate Total Lasting White mouthwash one morning and noticed that throughout the day my mouth became dry and irritated. My tongue developed raw areas and my lips were swollen as if I had filler in them. My painful tongue lasted throughout the day. Additionally, the soft tissue around the mouth area was sore and raw. I thought that it "might" be the new mouthwash but also considered that it could have been attributed to something else I consumed. I waited until my mouth was completely healed and tried it again. The exact same thing happened, however it felt more painful the second time. I'm confused as to which ingredient is causing the reaction. Based on other consumer complaints this product should be removed from circulation or at the very least reformulated. Use with MUCH CAUTION!

I have used Colgate Total Lasting White mouthwash only three times. The first time there were no adverse effects except a painfully dry mouth. Several days later I used it again. Over the course of that day my gums began to swell and become painful and later on my lips began to swell to the point that they split and bled. Sores formed in my mouth before bed that night. I still made no connection to the mouthwash but thought that I had eaten something or had an infection from something. I went to the dentist and they recommended a prescription rinse for the sores and Benadryl for the swelling and to come back in a week for additional interventions like biopsies, if the other things didn't work.
After a week things were better, good enough so that I didn't return to the dentist. After another week of using the prescription rinse I foolishly used the Colgate product again. This time not only did my gums and lips swell and sores develop in my mouth, but most of my face and tongue swelled. I literally looked like I had had my wisdom teeth out. The swelling puffed out my cheeks as high as my eyes. The pain in my mouth was nearly unbearable. Now, a week later my cheeks are still swollen, my salivary glands under my tongue are still swollen, white and painful, still have sores in my mouth and difficulty eating and my throat is still hoarse. I am slowly regaining some taste but nothing tastes the same as it did before. I hope this review prevents someone else from using this product and I sincerely hope it is recalled.

Purchased this toothpaste mainly because it said SENSITIVE. I've been using Sensitive toothpastes for some years now. Not always the same brand but mostly the ones on sale. I alternate between toothpastes but for the past 3 months or so I've been using Colgate Total. Since that time I've had skin peeling inside of my mouth, recurrent canker sores (about 4 times a month), and my lips have never been as dry as they are now (I drink at least 1/2 a gallon of water per day). The canker sores are a real disruption to life as it makes eating, talking, and drinking all but impossible. The most recent and my current one is located directly on the tip of my tongue. After doing further research I discovered this can be attributed to their use of SLS or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a foaming agent). I'm glad I found out what was the cause of my issue(s) so that I can now switch brands to one formulated for sensitive teeth but that doesn't contain SLS. I wish you all the best of luck and hope that your issue gets resolved.

Colgate Optic White - This stuff will whiten your teeth… BUT… It can cause side effects for some people. It made my lips swell, my taste buds have not worked properly and the whole inside of my mouth felt like I had chemical burns. Along with days of my lips peeling and the looks of burns outside the borders of my natural lip line. I have used medical grade whiteners before and never had a reaction. That's why it never occurred to me it was the toothpaste I was using. I have pics. of what this toothpaste did to me. So shameful.

I'm a heavy smoker and was looking for something to help me keep my teeth white along with brushing. So I began using both the rinse and optic white toothpaste and right away experienced a pain that can only be compared to cavity pain. I thought it would go away but no such luck and I, BTW have very healthy teeth for a smoker. So now I'm wondering if the Colgate people were aware of this and decided to flood the Sunday paper with really great discount coupons and lure suckers in like me to buy up as much as possible before they are forced to discontinue it. Live and learn as they say but still not cool.

I have used the Colgate Optic White in a couple of formulations for a while. I also sometimes brush my teeth with baking soda. It has just dawned on me that waking up with my dry tongue plastered to the roof of my mouth is not normal. That peeling lips and sore/dry mouth and throat are not normal, nor are they from sun (I don't go in the sun) or salty food, or eating a popsicle a day. Clearly, it's from this toothpaste! What in there is causing this mouth discomfort? I have been treated for yeast in mouth, for lichen planus.
If there's class action, I want in. I don't have this strange, dry, unpleasant feeling on the days I use baking soda. I can't believe it's taken me this long to catch on. I will be calling exec offices tomorrow, but wanted my experience logged here. I thought it's most prominent on the right side of my mouth. I spend more time brushing there because I'm right handed, I noticed last night. I am angry, you bet.

Mmmm... I am a migraine sufferer, though thankfully they've been a lot better lately. I've had a migraine headache every day this week, which thankfully has worn off with medication after a few hours. Couldn't think why, and it may be a total coincidence, but started using Colgate optic white a week ago. I Googled it, re side effects/headaches, and whilst there wasn't much feedback re migraines/headaches, was horrified to read all the other feedback, re mouth sores and teeth problems. It may be another coincidence, or psychosomatic, but I realize, thinking about it, that I also have a very sore throat, and teeth/gums feel very sensitive on one side particularly... I'm not taking any chances. It's going in the bin, along with the 2nd pack I bought on special offer. I'm hoping the headaches resolve, and that teeth/gums are not affected. They are one of my best features. Always had great teeth.

I've used Colgate toothpaste for years, has been my preferred brand. Decided to try the mouthwash. At first didn't notice anything. One day noticed lips slightly swollen, wasn't sure the culprit, wasn't really painful. Actually I've used lip plumping gloss, have tried products so thought it might have just been a larger than normal reaction to a gloss. Didn't use the mouth wash every day. Next usage, lip swelling was more obvious, thought it might be connected to mouthwash. Still wasn't really painful, did make teeth feel fresh.
Tried again today. At first no effect but got worse during the day. Tonight I look like someone with a botched lip implant, inside of lips are red swollen, badly inflamed and very painful. Confirmed it's definitely the Colgate mouthwash as that's the only thing different today. Poured the contents down the drain, been rinsing with water as much as I can. Difficulty drinking anything as mouth is numb. Progressively worse than previous usages. Anyone know what specific ingredient causes this? Never had a problem with toothpaste or other brand fluoride or whitening rinses.

I started using Optic White about 2 months ago and started to have sore gums. I wear invisalign so I thought maybe it was from a tray change. Soon after that I started to have white stringy pieces of skin peeling off my gums and cheeks. I went to the dentist this week and he's sending me to a periodontist because my gums went from healthy to concern in just a few months. I started using Colgate Optic White after I noticed a yellowing of my teeth. That was around March. Everything was fine until about 3 weeks in, my teeth were getting sensitive to everything, hot, cold, pressure even cool or cold air hurts them. I didn't think the toothpaste could be doing that. Another week or so had passed and I was noticing more pain along with everything else. Then something felt like it was stuck in my teeth. I went to check and a chunk of one of my back teeth came out! I was shocked! I don't brush my teeth as often as I should but I've never, in my life had problems like this!
Now, I have constant severe pain that started just on my right side in my teeth, but now it's starting to radiate throughout my entire mouth. I can barely eat or drink or sleep. I use all of the sensitive toothpastes that I can get my hands on and still no relief. Nothing is working. Yesterday my tongue felt numb and even more painful. When I woke this morning, I FELT the severe swelling of my mouth, including lips, gums, and tongue! The swelling was so severe that I knew my entire face was affected before I even looked in the mirror! I was horrified to see what can only be described as what a botched Botox would probably look like! I knew, immediately, that it was a reaction to something in the Colgate toothpaste and Colgate Total Lasting White rinse that I'd used before going to bed the night before.
As most all of you have already said, I too had a "harsh" experience with the Optic White toothpaste, so I recently switched to Colgate Sensitive and added the Total Lasting White rinse. And as some of you, I'd attributed my mouth "problems" to other possible causes. But the fact that I literally began to dread having to brush my teeth made me realize how serious this condition had become.
Last night was the first time I didn't dilute the rinse with water before using, and this morning was all the proof I needed that these Colgate products were to blame for my misery! I have been rinsing with salt water and taking a prescription anti-inflammatory steroid today, hoping to return to normal as quickly as possible! After having lost my Mother (nonsmoker) to Squamous Cell Carcinoma (found in her mouth), you can imagine the anxiety I've experienced... it is only after reading all your testimonials that I've begun to relax, hoping that no permanent damage has been done.
I am appalled that these products remain on the market... noting that these comments go back to over a year ago! (I stopped reading at that point to add my own... something I've never done before this experience!) After having used Colgate toothpastes off and on all my life, I must say I will discontinue use of any of their products... that's how horrible this whole experience has been for me! And thank you... all of you, for sharing your stories and confirming the obvious for me!

Back in the beginning of October of 2014 I purchased optic white toothpaste. As I used this toothpaste, it was giving me very warm sensation. I just thought that this was what it was supposed to do, however it got worse from there. This sensation got greater even when I wasn't brushing, then it started to cause terrible pain, I mean all of my teeth and my gums. This had me in so much pain I thought I was going to die. When I thought it was over, it happened again, blinding pain over and over then I developed a pretty highly sensitivity issue as well that is ongoing to date. With periodic pain issues, this has caused real discomfort for me and I wanted Colgate to know about this problem their product has caused.
So when I made contact, they asked for me to mail them the toothpaste in the package they provided, so I did. I was using Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief. The dentist gave me the sample last fall. I started using the sample from my travel bag approximately Feb 10/2015. At my regular scheduled appt on Feb 21/2015, I mentioned tooth sensitivity was present. My check-up was fine, including x-rays. The hygienist instructed me to use it all the time, instead of casually. The result(s) have been extremely painful. My teeth are extremely sensitive to hot, cold, and pressure. Flossing is difficult as my teeth have moved together. Swelling is present. The pain radiates into the jaw bones. My wife experienced the same pain, using the same product two months ago; we didn't connect the dots until last night as I was working out of town. I can only hope that ceasing the use of this product will return my mouth to its former state. Beware this toothpaste.

I've been googling to find what might cause this and found this list of complaints and I'm blown away. I had no idea something as simple as toothpaste could cause these types of problems. Colgate Optic White Mouthwash - Warning!!! Please do not use this product. It has some very nasty side effects. I recently purchased this product about 3 months ago and had been using it regularly. At the time I began having an onset of my lip swelling within several hours and even days of using this product. At first I thought it may have been some type of food allergy because I read that "MSG" which is a flavor enhancer was found in some Chinese food. And when I first begin having the onset of swelling I had eaten Chinese food so I associated the swelling with the food I had eaten. I refrained from Chinese food but the swelling continued and I realized that it wasn't the Chinese food that was causing the swelling.
So I assumed that maybe it was my medication. But I wasn't very convinced about that because I've been taking the same medicine for years and never had a problem before. So, I stop taking one of them for a few days and then reinvited it and I was perfectly fine. I didn't experience any lip swelling or anything. I hadn't used the mouth wash either for about a week or so during this time of me trying to pinpoint the problem. So are getting back on my meds routinely I was still unsure about what was causing my lips to swell. But the very day I began to use the mouthwash again; after not using it for a week or so, guess what happen??? I had swelling that same day. It wasn't immediate swelling right after use. It was within several hours. I used it in the morning before work about 7:30ish (a.m.), and around 5:20 (p.m.) or so I could literally feel my top lip swelling as if I had just been punched.
At this point I was able to pinpoint exactly what was causing this problem. I hadn't used the mouth wash for about a week or so and then when I finally did the swelling came back. I immediately discarded this product when I got home. And I haven't experience anything like that since. I am so glad I identified the problem because with continuous use it could have potentially become fatal.

Then I went online to see about Colgate Optic White, and saw 179 complaints, now has gone up some. They had the exact same condition that I had been suffering from. Colgate Optic White - Been using this on & off. I think it works just a little. I'm not sure though because I smoke, I'm a smoker, causes discoloration plus I drink several cups of coffee a day. Maybe it does really work and just couldn't tell because of the stains I get from old bad habits that are hard to get rid of (what can I do lol, I love coffee! And tried e-cigs but did not work for me!) so I don't know. I did however experience some the side effects reported in this website, but not to the same extent. No extreme pain or blistering, just a little discomfort, i.e. a little burning sensation, dryness of the mouth, peeling of the skin, you know the white stingy skin you get after brushing or gargling with anything that’s too strong?
One of my friends made a comment on how my teeth got a tad bit whiter after using the toothpaste continuously for a month or more. Pretty sure I had already used up at least 1 tube at the time. However, as far as I can remember around that time I started using disposable cigarette filter, so I really couldn't say if the toothpaste had anything to do with my friend noticing. I switch brands every now and then. I use Gumtech (local brand) sometimes because I think it's good for my gums. So it’s possible that not being exposed to whatever chemical they have in this product over prolonged period of time helps to avoid getting ulcers and other stuff unfortunately others have had to go through.
So maybe it would be wise to switch brands while you're not experiencing any of the terrible side effects yet to give your gums and teeth some time to like recover. Not going to tell people to totally avoid using this product but I definitely would not recommend Colgate Optic White to anyone w/ highly sensitive gums/teeth - not after reading some of the horrible reviews.

I am in my 60s and drink tea so my teeth are not as white as I would like them to be. I decided to try Optic White. Over a month ago, I got a "cold sore" on the side of my mouth. It would almost go away and then come back. Then one appeared on the other side. So for weeks I have had these ugly sores on both sides of my mouth. They get a little better but they won't go away and they are very red. I typically heal from sores quickly so this has been very frustrating. I have tried all kinds of "cold sore" meds. So today I realized it might be the toothpaste. I came to this website and read the complaints of other customers. I will toss the tube and see if I can stop being embarrassed every time I leave my house. Yellow teeth are not as bad as red sores around my mouth!!

I've been and will remain a Colgate customer for years. My complaint is with the toothpaste tube. I've purchased and used a number of Optic White toothpaste tubes that failed at the heat-sealed end of the tube. It seems I can get more toothpaste on the sink and counter than I can on the brush when I'm not careful. I'll grant you that the laminated foil/plastic tube is bright and attractive. I'm confident that the boys in marketing loved it. However, I don't want to roll it up every time I use it in order to avoid making a mess. If you can't hold the seal, try more heat, try a longer dwell time, try thicker plastic. Demand that the seal holds as well as the samples did when your packaging provider sold the guys in marketing on the snappy new package look.

I used it for four days twice a day before I realized that it was the cause of my entire mouth and throat hurting (I also had a cold and was using cough drops/zinc, and at first thought my mouth was irritated from that). It was like burning the roof of your mouth on pizza, but my entire mouth, even under my tongue. After three or four days the pain was less, but I developed a painful sore in the back of my throat. That healed, but I've had persistent dry mouth, the glands under my chin are swollen, and I lost most of my sense of taste. It's been 2.5 weeks since I stopped using the toothpaste and sugar tastes like salt, salt tastes pretty much like nothing. I am not one to write reviews but I felt so strongly about this. I thought I should post my thoughts. I purchased Colgate Optic White toothpaste and within a few days my lips began to swell. I didn't associate it with the toothpaste right away. My mouth was very dry and my throat was sore for about 3 days, I got 5 cold sores on my bottom lip and one on the top. This has never happened to me before but I thought I must be getting sick. One evening my son (16) used the toothpaste and within a couple of hours his lymph nodes in the right side of his neck began to swell to the size of a walnut. He could not eat because it hurt his throat. We had to contact a doctor because it got so bad, so quickly that it scared me. He was given benadryl which reduced the swelling. Although the swelling has gone down, his gland is still sore from the rapid swelling. That night, we reviewed all new products in our home and discovered it may be the toothpaste. We quit using it immediately and the symptoms are all going away for both of us. This product should not be on the shelf. I only hope this review will help others prior to buying it so they will never have to experience what we went through. I can't believe Colgate would keep a product like this in supermarkets!!

About 2 weeks ago I bought a 2.8 oz tube of Colgate sparkling white mint zone gel toothpaste from a sprint gas station in Augusta Georgia. Right off the back I realized that it tasted off. At first I thought it was because it was a different flavor or something in that nature. A few days later my gums started swelling and begin to bleed constantly making it hard to for me to eat, work, sleep everything causing severe pain and headaches and me almost losing my job. I have had all 4 of my wisdom teeth surgically cut out and it doesn't compare to this feeling at all. This brand of toothpaste has put me through hell the last few days.
After hours and hours of research I came across this website and went straight to the hospital. The doctor told me that the toothpaste pretty much started eating my gums away and caused me to get an infection in my mouth which was causing the pain and bleeding. I have videos of me spitting large amounts of blood in to my bathroom sink. After seeing hundreds of people with the same problem I wish and hope no one uses this product ever again. It will make you feel like your teeth are rotting out of your mouth (how is it that I have never had any problems with my gums or teeth then out of nowhere I end up with an infection in my mouth. I have never had a cavity in my life and the only thing I have changed is my toothpaste).
I tried to contact Colgate earlier and they are supposed to have someone call me back on Monday. I don't know what has happened to the Colgate but that will be my last time to purchase it.
Also, after reading all the reports of people having thrush-like symptoms from the toothpaste, I will now look forward to that stopping as well. I started using Colgate Optic White several months ago. I already had pretty white teeth naturally but I wanted to keep them that way because of the tea/coffee that I drink. To complement the toothpaste got a large bottle of the Optic White mouthwash. I'm 40 yrs old and my teeth have always been quite healthy and low maintenance, with few cavities and no sensitivity issues. After using the toothpaste, noticed my gums receding and a sensitive part of the tooth started to be exposed. But when I started using the mouthwash, things REALLY escalated. My teeth have become so sensitive during brushing that I switched just this past weekend to using Sensodyne. Right away I noticed no irritation during brushing. That's when I realized the change in my teeth and gums were directly related to the use of Colgate Optic White.
I used the Sensodyne this weekend and then this morning decided to try using the mouthwash one more time, and I had to spit it immediately out of my mouth because of how my teeth hurt with sensitivity. It was SO bad! Tonight I decided to Google key words "Colgate Optic White teeth sensitivity" and found a ton of similar complaints. Then I remembered that at my last dental visit the dental hygienist cleaning my teeth noted my sensitive spots where my gums had eroded and exposed sensitive parts of the tooth, and she told me to avoid using toothpastes with harsh abrasives like baking soda.
I came home and immediately looked at the ingredients in Optic and there was no baking soda so I felt confident I could continue using the products and just thought the change in my teeth over the last 6 months was due to natural ageing or something. But seeing the difference when I decide to try and use the trial size tube of Sensodyne to address the sensitivity, it not only did, but my whole brushing experience was a lot more comfortable.
I'm so disappointed because I grew up on Colgate products and always prided myself on my perfect healthy teeth. It's terrible to think my teeth could remain permanently like this because of Colgate! They should warn people to not use the toothpaste and mouthwash every day if it's too strong, not just let people unknowingly destroy their teeth. I'm really disappointed. I'll be contacting my dentist to see what can be done AND telling all those people who always compliment me on my white smile and ask me if I use anything special, what NOT to use, that's for sure!

At the end of the second week any contact with crunchy foods or extremely hot foods nearly put me in agony. I decided to do some internet research and discovered I was anything but alone with this problem. I found numerous, numerous reports submitted by people all across the country who encountered this exact same problem after using Colgate Optic White mouthwash. This product does in fact whiten teeth, but I, and from what reviews I've read on the internet apparently many others, have found it to be exceedingly harsh to gums, teeth too and I for one could not possibly continue to use this product unless I wanted to continue to be in pain on a daily basis.

After this appointment the dental hygienist ran a light in my mouth and was mortified. I noticed some slight sensitivity and being a "tough" guy I just ignored it. The hygienist had the dentist examine me and the dentist told me that my taste buds were missing from the end of my tongue and that I had skin tissues damaged on the roof of my mouth. She said it wasn't normal. She suggested I see my primary care doctor and worst case scenario it could be cancer.

May 29, 2013, I flew to France for my niece's wedding and I bought a travel size Colgate Optic White toothpaste to take with me. I used it twice a day for the duration of my vacation and continued to use it when I returned home. When I returned home, I bought two more regular size tubes that happened to be on sale. The second week in June, I noticed all of the glands on the right side of my neck were quite swollen and limited the movement of my head to the right side. After a week, the swelling went down and I was left with a lump on the right side of my neck. I waited for a couple of weeks before making an appointment with my doctor because I thought it could have been a result of the air pressure on my ears (thus affecting my glands) from flying.
I went to my doctor in July and he didn't think it was anything serious but to put his mind and my mind at ease, he was sending me for a CT scan. Had the CT scan (with the dye injection) in August and my doctor received the results the same day. He contacted me stating there was a 1 cm. node on my lymph gland and the technician labelled it "not normal". I am now waiting on pins and needles for an appointment with an ENT specialist. Naturally I am thinking that it is cancer.
Today is September 8th and I have been using this toothpaste twice a day until yesterday. For the past several weeks, I have had a constant chemical/metal taste in my mouth that only goes away when I'm eating. When I run my tongue over my teeth, I taste chemicals and my teeth feel like they have "fur" growing on them (as if I have gone days without brushing my teeth). Last night was the first time that I made a connection between the chemical taste in my mouth and the use of Optic White. I immediately ran to the store to buy my old toothpaste, Aquafresh. Already, I notice the chemical taste is dissipating. I did not have the burning or mouth sores; if I had, perhaps I would have made the connection back in June. Funny, what they say about hindsight, because I did notice a little white blister (I thought it was a pimple), on the corner of my top lip back in June.
I should have questioned that more because I am 51 years old and have never had a cold sore in my life. I am praying to God that I do not have cancer and after reading all of the other reviews, I am hoping the swollen node is an allergic reaction. I know, strange eh, hoping I have an allergic reaction; but it is much better than the alternative that has taken over my thoughts. How can Colgate keep saying when contacted, that this is the first complaint of that nature they received, when so many on this panel have contacted them? My guess is they will never admit culpability and they will not recall the product because this will open the window for possible lawsuits. My guess is what you will see is the price of the product drastically reduced (which is happening now), and stores will continue to sell it until it is gone and then you will no longer be able to buy it because I bet Colgate has already stopped production of Optic White!

"Jamie of Sevierville, TN", I swear I experienced the same symptoms as you. I only used the toothpaste and mouthwash for 2 weeks and ended up with horrible I guess you can say chemical burn on both top and lower lip. My top lip is taking a little longer to heal and is still ridiculously stiff and darkened. I've been using Carmex for cold sores and the only thing it did was get rid of those nasty tiny bumps which I've never had in my life. It also relieves the tightness temporarily. Is there anything you used that helped? Below I've included a before and after picture of my lips. Of course, the lighting is different in both pictures but you can still see the drastic change.

I have been using the Colgate toothpaste now for about three months and began having a sore throat and tongue. The doctor couldn't figure it out and thought at first that it was a virus, but you don't have a virus for over a month. Why isn't the company doing something about the ingredient in the toothpaste that is causing this?

Colgate White Glo - After single use, dry mouth, white tongue and feeling my gums. Imagine what damage it does down the drains. You ingest it no matter how well you rinse.

Colgate Optic White - Every time I'd start to use it (when it's the only toothpaste in the house), I get mild mouth cracks (angular cheilitis). It'd heal after I stopped using it. Based on the other side effects I've read, I think this product shouldn't have been put on the market. No matter how small the concentration, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is caustic to tissue and should not coat the whole oral cavity. Maybe that's the reason whitening strips are more successful, by only covering the teeth.

I have been using Colgate Visible White for the last 2 weeks. It did not help whiten my teeth. Rather, I have this disgusting white thing peeling off from inside my gums! It could be the skin!

This is the culprit of my pain... I have had dry mouth, irritated lips, canker sores all since I started using this product. I have been to the doctor and dentist who think it's a reaction to product which I'm not going to use anymore. This has been hard to deal with and I have had to miss work because of the side effects of dry and burning mouth and swollen lips with little rash like bumps.

I bought this toothpaste only last week for a change (I have sensitive teeth), and within days, I noticed an issue but only realised yesterday that it was this product. My gums feel kind of numb all the time and my tongue is the same and a little sore, a very odd sensation. I am going back to using Sensodyne as this works for me. I'm not sure what ingredient differs in this toothpaste from others, but I won't buy any whitening ones in the future !

I used this product everyday for well over 2 months. I always thought that it had a strong abnormal taste but it never dawned on me that it could be potentially harmful. (Come on, it's Colgate.) I started to develop canker type sores, a sore throat and extremely sensitive taste buds on the back of my tongue. I would also wake up with an incredibly dry mouth. I searched the internet trying to figure out what the heck was going on with my mouth. It kept me up at night and is still currently doing so. The other morning, it occurred to me that possibly it had something to do with my toothpaste. As terrible as it sounds, I'm relieved that others had the same symptoms after using this product.
I have an appointment with my doctor in the morning and my fingers are crossed that somehow she will be able to provide me with the answers to get rid of the pain. It is unfathomable that this product was ever allowed to hit the shelves and still remains available! Shame on you, Colgate! I would also like to say that if I find a solution to this to make the pain go away, I will post again. I would also like to ask that if any former posters that have had these similar symptoms and found relief, please share your stories on how. I'm still very scared that this may never go away! Thank you.

I bought a travel-size tube of Colgate Optic White toothpaste because I wanted to try and whiten my teeth and figured it would be a good product. I've been using it for about two or three weeks now. I noticed just recently that my gums were getting kinda sore. I didn't think anything of it until a dime-sized section of skin peeled off the roof of my mouth, which has never happened before. So I went on with my day and figured it was just one of those things. Then I noticed my throat started hurting (within hours of skin peeling), so my dad checked it out and he said it looked yellowish and it's very uncomfortable. So I went online looking for what this could possibly be, and came across this site, and what people are saying about...(who knew) Colgate Optic White toothpaste. I am experiencing the same things, so I figured it has to be linked...
I did some research as well. Colgate Optic White Toothpaste has Propylene Glycol in it, which is really a downgraded version of Antifreeze, which, if the right amount of pH buffering agents aren't added, can corrode metals... Teeth aren't made of metal, and metal is obviously stronger.
I'm just wondering if these symptoms will last. I've stopped using the product of course, but I'm wondering if these symptoms will go away or if this is going to affect me for a while. Granted, everyone's different.

I recently bought Colgate optic white on Thursday. So I used it for three days and instantly all my bottom teeth and gums have been hurting! It's so painful and I never had any problems with my teeth, no cavities or nothing. I also have been getting bumps all over my lips, not to mention this huge one so visible and I'm so embarrassed! I feel like Eddie Murphy in the nutty professor when his lip got fat! I can't believe this product. My mouth is in so much pain. Never again! I would love to try to get a refund for it from Colgate but better off, I'm just throwing this garbage out.
