Used Colgate for many years, recently noted the salty/metallic aftertaste in my water city provides. I was blaming that city salting the roads too much in our days, and run off ending up in the water reservoirs where water is being taken from. But then I have tried to wash mouth with bottled water - same thing. Now I could not get rid of salty taste coming out of my gums and tooth whenever I lick them. Found this thread about toothpaste and everything is cleared up now - it is a Colgate toothpaste!!! Gums were swollen for a year now. Stopping using it starting today. Do not use it!!! Stay away if you feel salt.

Been using Colgate total gel toothpaste for years with no problems. But a few months ago, I noticed my gums, lips, and tongue being sore, with very dry mouth. I noticed my toothpaste tube said *new flavor*. Who would suspect the toothpaste, but - it got worse over time, and one night, my tongue swelled up and I had trouble swallowing and was choking on my own saliva, and had to go to ER. My tongue had cracks in it. I thought I had COVID or something. They even tested me for COVID. (I was negative.) The ER told me I had a reaction to a food or drink.

Afterwards, I thought through what could cause this, and my Colgate new flavor toothpaste got swapped out for Crest with Scope Gel. Well, within a day, my gums, tongue, and throat started to feel better, with no dry mouth aftertaste. It took a full week for my mouth to recover, but who would have guessed it was my toothpaste?! COLGATE - YOU WERE POISONING ME WITH THIS *NEW FLAVOR!* DO NOT USE COLGATE! I have no idea which ingredient they changed but it is horrible. They can pay for my ER bill. I am now a Crest user with no mouth issues. Who is looking out for us consumers anymore??

I was a loyal Colgate Total user but recently, I am facing issues after using it. My lips get swollen and my mouth pains after using the new Colgate SF. Why did Colgate do this to their customers? Why change something that was working well?

I bought the Colgate toothpaste, the one with Tartar control, and it made me feel awful. This is outrageous. When I attempted to contact them about this, they put me on hold and played "Every Breath You Take", but it was the version with Sting. It made me piss. I will not be buying from Colgate ever again.

DO NOT BUY COLGATE TOTAL SF!!! So I was a loyal Colgate Total toothpaste user from my late teens. Loved Total toothpaste as I wouldn't get that icky teeth feeling till my next brushing. Bought a 2 pack of the Colgate Total SF (sensitive formula) a couple of months ago not realizing that the formula was different. OH MY GOSH I cannot explain the excruciating pain in my whole mouth after using this.

I honestly didn't even think it was the toothpaste doing this and used it for several weeks. My inner cheek skin and the roof part of my mouth was literally peeling off (like when you drink something scalding hot), my gums were inflamed and started to bleed, and got blisters around my gums/ under my tongue/in front of my teeth even where the lower lip and gum connects (that blister on that connector part was insanely painful!) ! I really thought I had the coronavirus or a disease/infection in my mouth. I couldn't eat anything except mashed and bland food.

The day when the blisters felt like hell I couldn't get in touch with my dentist bc of the covid shutdown. I cried to my husband and told him I was in so much pain. I was popping ** like crazy and using ** all over my mouth. He told me to try and switch to his (other brand) toothpaste and to see if that would help. I had told him that I've been using this Total toothpaste forever. That's when I looked at the tube to see if anything was different and noticed it said SF next to Total on the tube.

This is the WORST toothpaste ever!!!! Sensitive Formula??? No freaking way!! Exact opposite! I just called Colgate and complained and they told me that they haven't received any complaints about the Total SF formula. That has to be a TOTAL LIE (pun intended) as I just saw all the negative reviews with similar reactions on here! Umm class action lawsuit? I'm sooo angry and upset! Colgate you so lost me as a loyal consumer! WARNING TO EVERYONE READING THIS NOT TO USE COLGATE TOTAL SF!!!

OMG... Now I know what has happened to my mouth and lips. Blisters, sores, burning, pain and more from this toothpaste. High anxiety not knowing what was causing this. I even had two COVID tests thinking that was the culprit but both tests negative. Drinking water like crazy thinking I was dehydrated. Worried I had de eloped diabetes. Hurts to eat and drink bottled water. I am so mad at Colgate for doing this to me. No warning on toothpaste tube or box.

After regular use of this Colgate Total SF toothpaste, my wife and I both experienced pain in our mouth, a tightness feeling, and blisters behind our lower loop. After changing toothpastes it went away. I don't know which of the 20 ingredients is causing this but I won't be using again. Hopefully Costco takes back the 5-pack.

I wish I could give this 0 stars. I switched to this toothpaste because it was the cheapest 3pack at the store. 2 days into using it my gums became extremely swollen where it hurt to just breathe. I stopped using it and my dentist put me on some antihistamine mouthwash and the swelling has finally gone down a bit. I’m now seeing a bit of peeling as my gums are getting better but they still look super raw. I’ve never had any problems with my teeth and now I’m freaking out. I can barely eat. Please whatever you do, do NOT buy this product. Colgate you have caused me so much pain and fear.

This Colgate Total toothpaste is the worst tasting toothpaste ever and I’m not choosy. I’ve used natural licorice toothpaste that tasted better than this. I can’t figure out what they’ve called this flavor. It says “advanced clean between” and the end of the tube is green. My daughter says it tastes like cardboard. My son asked if it was expired and says it tastes slightly like mushrooms. I’m going with perfume and mint mixed together. Please, please, please don’t buy this toothpaste.

That was intensely bad. Just brushed my teeth and I've rinsed my mouth out three times. Colgate has clearly screwed up a batch or something because there is no way that went through taste testing. I'd advise a recall.

I’ve been a Colgate toothpaste user for 30+ years and have been extremely pleased with their products until now. It took me a week to figure out that my burning tongue was a result of this “New Flavor” toothpaste. The burning lasts a couple minutes and the taste is just awful. I thought maybe it was a bad tube so I bought a couple more and they too are awful and caused my tongue to burn. This is enough for me to say goodbye to Colgate and now I have gone to Crest. Crest will be my toothpaste from now on.

We've been using Colgate Total Advanced Deep clean for years. This new version is awful. Burns your entire mouth, causes swelling, and tastes horrible. I don't know how this passed consumer testing or even internal testing for that matter. We thought maybe it was just us but out of my family of four no one can use it without an adverse reaction. I hate to throw it away but I can't donate it without feeling guilty that someone else could be harmed by it. Colgate really dropped the ball on this one. We've been dedicated users since the product first launched - it's a shame we have to find something new to use now.

*I have never bothered to review a product online, ever. *I have been a loyal Colgate user for 50+ years. After today, I can never claim either of those again. The new Colgate SF is the worst tasting toothpaste I have ever experienced! Unlike the other reviews, I did not suffer any ill effects, but that's because I threw the entire tube in the trash after using only twice! The taste is absolutely HORRIBLE!! I refuse to purchase any Colgate product unless/until they offer the "regular" Colgate Total as an alternative to the new SF formula. I'm not asking them to do away with SF, but rather let me choose between the two. Until then, they have lost me (and my dollars) as a loyal brand consumer. Wake up and listen, Colgate. Please!!

Been trying to figure out why, whenever I brush with this new tube of toothpaste now, it tastes awful, like I have bleach, or peroxide, or something in my mouth, my mouth has been so dry, raw, blistering, my gums sore, my tongue hurting... They changed the toothpaste!! Nobody can leave ANYTHING alone! I can't use this now! Been using this toothpaste faithfully for years and years! Not anymore! My mouth feels horrible! I am absolutely horrified reading so many reviews detailing exactly what I've experienced, and this toothpaste is still on store shelves! If I could give them ZERO stars, I would! So disappointed!

Just started using the Colgate with the new flavor. The taste is awful! I looked at the tube and was surprised it said new flavor or something of the sort. I've kept using it because that's all I have now, but it still tastes awful and my tongue now feels a bit numb after brushing. I haven't had any sores or problems like others have described, but I think I'll throw it away when I get home. I don't need problems due to toothpaste. I have enough problems already. I hope they go back to their original formula. I've used Colgate forever. I can't remember ever using anything else.

I was totally horrified to read other reviews of this product, I just couldn't believe how bad it tasted. I thought I was going crazy when I brushed my teeth and the toothpaste tasted like soap, it's terrible! I've used Colgate for years, but won't be any longer. Thankfully the taste was bad enough that I didn't continue using it, looks like that was a good decision given the horrible reactions others are describing! I had to throw out the rest of the tube. What on earth were they thinking?

Two weeks ago I bought Colgate Total Clean Between toothpaste. This was my preferred toothpaste. I didn't notice the new Formula tag on the tube/box until I put it in my mouth. It tastes like toilet bowl cleaner. Smells! It tasted awful and I tried repeatedly to rinse the flavor away. I can see how some people would experience a burning sensation after use. It tastes like chemicals. I sent my significant other to the drugstore to buy a different toothpaste. He came back with Colgate Total Whitening New Formula. This one tastes like mold! I have no choice but to change brands. I'm not one to go online and rate a product but I had to share this story because I thought I was crazy until I found this site.

Thank heavens I have found this site---I thought I was losing it. I have used Colgate Total for years and years. Never any issues. I bought a tube of the new formula in Jan 2020. OMG! What a mistake! The first time I used it I could feel the bubbling and burning sensation. The taste had a burning sensation. Is it too much hydrogen peroxide? What is happening? Within three days of usage the inside of my mouth was raw with tiny open sores and my lips were swollen. The burning was worse when rinsing with water. Is it the toothpaste? Nah---couldn't be. This is dangerous stuff especially for children!

Now I find out that other people have the same or similar problems. I have since stopped using the product. Trouble is what product can I use without the issues of Total. Perhaps a change in brand would be safer. Wake up Colgate there is a problem with your new formula and it is not only in the USA (I am in Canada.). I will keep the offending product just in case you want to see the lot (something I cannot see on the tube.).

I woke up in the morning with swollen mouth and burning as hell gums. I am not freaking out because I had the same reaction few years ago when I was using Crest Prohealth. It costed me 5000 dollars because my insurance didn't want to pay for my bloodwork (my doctor couldn't figure out what is going on with me). I am in shock that the same thing happened after using Colgate. The brand that I trusted so much. I literally look like porn star after injections now with lips that covers half of my face. Really dissatisfied and disappointed. I wanted to share my experience because people can freak out about having cancer or any more serious disease. Just to calm them down... it's not a cancer... it's your toothpaste.

I have been a loyal Colgate user all my life. So, I was very disappointed, angry, and shocked when I came upon this site and found out that the irritation inside my mouth could be due to the new Colgate Total formulation. I had spent a good amount of time and energy trying to figure out the cause of the raw feeling, swelling, and inflammation inside of my mouth. I changed my diet and increased my fluid intake thinking that it was due to dehydration and I wasn't on any medications that might have caused these symptoms. Nothing worked. My mouth just felt raw and dry all of the time for months!!! I suspected everything else, but never the toothpaste.

Ever since I switched to a different toothpaste, my mouth feels much, much better. The swelling has gone down and the mouth pain and discomfort have almost completely disappeared. I hope using this new formulated Colgate for months didn't cause any permanent damage to me and my family. I threw away the rest of the tubes as soon as I found this out. We will never use this product again.

Ok here's my story. I got a unopened bottle of Colgate optic white rinse. Used it 3 times. The first time brushed first then rinsed my mouth. Felt weird gums. Foaming around the teeth. Ah it's working? Next morning brushed again, rinsed again then rinsed with plain water. Teeth felt sore again. Wow this stuff is strong. Guess it's cleaning them up. Off to work. That night had some microwave popcorn. Ate it, brushed and rinsed again, flushed with water, went to bed. I awoke to a mouth full of teeth that felt loose swallow gums and on the foot of my mouth a big lump. Hurt like hell. Had a wake and a viewing to attend that morning.

Saturday pain was like none I ever felt before. Called around. My dentist out of town. No one would take me. A family member a doctor had look at it. Said it looks like a blocked gland and infected gave me some antibiotics and steroids to take till I got into see my dentist. She confirmed it another script on antibiotic. So far I've been on 3 set of antibiotics pain still there swelling has gone down it's getting better. No cavities. Xrays clean. But still in pain there talking. Root canal now and I'm getting pissed. This seems to be the cause of my problem. And there lots more horror stories on this product. Where's a lawyer when you need one. Going on day 26 now. So if you never took this product don't. It's like drinking acid. Pain like I never had in my life. Leave it on the shelf or more like why is it still on the shelf? For me I'm going to speak to a lawyer. It's an unsafe product and I think people should be aware of it.

My family has been using Colgate for years, wouldn’t use anything else. Bought our usual 4 pack at Costco-did notice it’s now “advanced” new formula. Great right, could only be better? NOPE! After using the new formula I began having painful swelling in my gums. Since I didn’t know it was the toothpaste I assumed I just needed to brush more/better/longer. For three weeks my symptoms worsened. My gums would visibly swell, I had sores on the roof of my mouth, pressure in my teeth. I could barely eat, didn’t even want to talk. I was terrified my teeth were going to fall out. It was so bad I made an emergency dental appointment one morning. Dentist could see all the inflammation and sores, suggested a deep cleaning, so I did that day. That only made things worse as now my gums were open to get more of the toothpaste in them.

I was in agony with the pain sores itching burning and then my tongue was starting to go numb. I started thinking this could be a reaction to something. Found this site and read about the numerous people having the same reaction to the stannous fluoride Colgate has added to this new formula. I immediately took a **. Brushed my teeth with only water and then rinsed with a mouthwash. Within hours I was feeling relief. Threw away the Colgate and days later almost back to normal. It’s been about two weeks and I’m almost fully healed from that nightmare. I say almost because I’m pretty sure there is some permanent damage to the area right behind my two front teeth. I’ve reached out to Colgate but nobody has responded. This should turn into a lawsuit if they don’t remove it from the stores. I’m honestly scarred after the torment that toothpaste caused.

I immediately knew something was wrong when I started using a new tube this morning. The flavor is horrible and cheap tasting. I'm going to have to look for some of the older product to get me by in hopes they change it back. Otherwise I'll be looking for something new. Update: Two hours after brushing with the new formula I had a sour, metallic taste in my mouth. By that afternoon I had sores in my mouth and burning lips. Something is horribly wrong with this product! Do not use!

I've used Colgate Total since it came out. Loved that it kept my teeth feeling clean all day. Didn't think anything of the new formulation change. Around the holidays, partway into the first tube of my usual multi-pack, my tongue became painful and swollen. Then my lips and the entire inside of my mouth in quick succession. For the holidays, could only eat soft foods with plenty of liquids. Eating was excruciating. Talking was difficult. The pain would wake me up in the middle of the night it was so bad.

Thinking back, this was the only thing that changed, and the pain first started after brushing one night. So I changed to an old tube from a friend, and the pain slowly subsided over more than a week. Since it had taken so long after the switch back, I thought maybe I was mistaken and it was worth a second try since I love Colgate Total and had two and half tubes of the new formulation keft. Waited over 2 weeks since the pain went away, and then returned to the new formulation. After 3 brushings with the new formula, the pain is returning. This is proof to me. The two and a half tubes are going in the trash and I'm switching brands.

I had an awful allergic reaction to Colgate Optic White this week. I went online and found others had the same or similar reactions to this product. My lips were unbelievably chapped and totally swelled up - looked like I had cosmetic injections in my lips! I had tons of sores inside the bottom and inside the top of my lips! My dentist sent me to the dermatologist who put me on ** and prescription antihistamines every 4 hours - that's how bad it was! I actually got the toothpaste from my dentist as a free sample. Shouldn't Colgate alert dentists about this?

I've used Colgate toothpaste since in my 20s -- and I'm 81 now. Tried other brands now and again, but always liked Colgate best, even when they reformulated to Colgate Total. Bought this new stuff (without realizing the change) at Costco. Used it once -- horrible flavor (like mouthwash gone bad). Nasty slimy texture. Burning sensation immediately upon rinsing. Going to try to find the old stuff -- failing that, after 60-odd loyal years, I'm switching. What the heck were they thinking???

My husband bought a tube of Colgate Advanced toothpaste. Our normal toothpaste is Crest but he saw Advanced and he thought we would give it a try. We both used it yesterday and after about a half hour later we both had a burning sensation and swollen tongues. I also developed blister on the roof of my mouth and at this point I called my Doctor and he had us come into his office. He stated we were having an allergic reaction to the toothpaste. He treated us and told me to trash the toothpaste. He also stated that this was a problem with Colgate's new formula.
