I have been utilizing a Smart Start "BREATHCHECK" portable device that is linked to my smartphone for about 5 weeks. I have encountered several issues in that time. It is supposed to prompt me for random breath checks, which it does. It is also supposed to start a timer after the prompt is sent, which is also does. However, there are occasions where the "timer" expires before I can even get the portable breathalyzer out of my pocket. There are also occasions where the "random phrase" is not recognized, and the test has to be restarted. This is particularly frustrating due to the fact that a person is already up against a time constraint with completing a test.

My favorite malfunction is when it gets ALL the way through to the point that it prompts to blow into the device and then decides it cannot analyze a person's breath, which requires COMPLETELY restarting the entire process, including turning the portable device off and back on, and starting all over again. When it works the way that it should, it is a great device. Unfortunately, it doesn't often work the way that it should.

Do Not! The installers told me after months of problems that all they have are issues with Smart Start. Boy don’t get me started! Non existent customer service after, all the help you want to get it though! Service messages, to then be charged because there wasn’t a service issue. They are top of the line scammers! I’ve been told by the installers to use Interlock. After three months I paid the additional $300 to have smart start removed and interlock put on. Just don’t do it! Infuriating! Is an understatement!

Please please be cautious with Ignition Interlock companies like SmartStart, because predatory companies like this exist industry-wide. However, also please do not choose Smart Start as your interlock provider! The company has no desire to provide a functional service. Their service is really just a money grab from a captive audience. I was unable to start my car for two days, because of their absolute lack of service.

    What to expect:

Expect MINIMUM 30 minute wait if you have to call in, but most times it's 90-120 minutes.

Expect to call in frequently. I had to almost every month, and the months I had to? Usually 10+ calls.
Expect SmartStart to drain car batteries.

Expect to get random failures, like autopayment failures and subsequent same-day device lockouts.

Failed to charge my card automatically multiple times. When the charge fails, the car is no longer operable, and to get it running requires a 30-120 minute call.
Expect ambiguous messages that require calls to customer service.
Expect no one you speak to at their customer service line to know how to help with anything.
Expect Smart Start to never return your call after you're a customer (before you're a customer? They'll call you back instantly).
Expect to pay more when you sign the contract than quoted.
Expect the device to not update your case manager or the courts, even if you pay extra for the service.
Expect to pay hidden fees for everything.
Expect SmartStart to call back immediately when calling their sales line (I submitted my info on their website just to see if someone would call me back and I got a call back within 5 seconds of hitting submit. I'm not joking. 5 seconds versus 120 minutes????!).

Expect their Service Techs to seem knowledgeable and drastically different from their customer service group, but good luck anyone.

I hope this review helps temper expectations when it comes to SmartStart, and will hopefully even deter individuals from choosing them as their ignition interlock provider. I would encourage everyone to call the companies they plan to do business with and see how difficult it is to get to customer service, or some individual who can answer questions.

I had my Smart lock installed, and after a year and some months my case we closed I got the approval to have it removed. I went back to have it taken out. Pier was so rude. I told him I was not the person with his rudeness. While I went upfront to pay I was told my bill was only $80 due to Pier. My car was running and I drove home. On Sat the car wouldn’t start. I waited until Monday when I spoke with Edgar (owner). He did come out to my home, and in 5 mins the car started. I said to Edgar, "Pier did something wrong. Didn’t he." Edgar replied he took short cuts installing and uninstalling. I knew something was not right. Edgar stated, "When you get time bring it in and we can check out." He didn’t say, "I just did a quick fix and bring it in as soon as you can."

2 weeks ago I emailed him twice and no answer. I finally got in touch with him at the shop. I explained to him my mother was very sick and she passed away on the 20th Of August. I did tell him I wasn’t driving the car a lot because I didn’t want to leave my mother. I asked if I could bring it the next day. He said they were really busy, maybe on Wednesday, I couldn’t reach him nor on Thursday, same thing. When I called the Corporate office and I explained to her, she stated she would call and see If he could reach him. She came back in the phone. He told her that he told me to bring it by and I didn’t so he had No intention on fixing it. This is really a shame that I have to go thru all of this when he know he is liable.

I have had this device for over 1 year with no issues via an automatic debit monthly payment. This July, Smart Start failed to initiate my auto debit but sent a notice saying it wouldn't go through. Checked with my bank, funds were available and no charge was attempted. I quickly changed my form of payment to a CC to make sure it was paid. Payment posted 07/02 then a subsequent charge was posted on 7/6 so my account now shows delinquent. In August, Smart Start never withdrew a payment so I called and was told my account was in order. In September, my monthly rate was changed and I'm now being charged $21.00 more per month. They also charged me twice, refunded one of these charges which continued my account in a "delinquent" status.

After speaking with a representative, she said the change in cost was due to state taxes which proved untrue. After many attempts, this company cannot tell why, after their initial error, I am now paying more than the original contract stated. They only offer that they have a "terms and conditions" clause. I truly feel that their original error in July is the catalyst that changed my terms although smart start will not acknowledge that. We are held hostage in this system and smart start seems to be using this to their financial advantage. They are extremely difficult to get ahold of. Phone wait times are usually 90 minutes or more. They offer a callback system which is useless - They either don't call back or when they do, I receive dead air. This company needs to have some accountability to their customers.

Buyer beware! I am very thorough and ask a lot of questions and still had many unfavorable surprises. Reps are ill-informed. Window for install was $99-249? Pretty vague.. Shops can charge what they want I have 2006 and was charged the top price for install $249. There’s 7% tax in monthly bill…enrollment fee was taxed. Auto pay has no benefits. And the promotional 50% off my first month’s bill is $56.99 which would make my bill $ 114. Only it’s 107.49. I’m on my 4th phone call. The rep said she thinks tax went up … I had it installed for 4 days ago the tax has not gone up.

The reps give false information which I do not appreciate at this stage in the game …we are broke, defeated and getting put through the wringer while paying for a device we don’t want but are being forced to do is inhumane and unethical. 4 days and I’ve almost had a few accidents as I’m not making it to the full blow amounts of time on the surprise blows and taking 4 times each.. by the fourth if you fail you get locked out and I’m having full panic attacks on the road from fear of getting in trouble.. Make the driving blows shorter. We are not prepared to take deep breaths when we are caught off guard.. It’s dangerous! The whole process is torture start to finish.

Been using this device for 5 weeks now. I've never missed a rolling test or blown anything other than a .000%. Took a break to run across the street to get gas and blew into the device to start the car. Got gas and it had me blow into it again (5 min later) normal procedure. Couple min later it says VIOLOCK04day on the handheld display. Called installation place and said I have to bring it back in for another calibration even though I just calibrated it last week $93.00. Go back today and they claim I missed a rolling test. (I know my device never beeped during that time.) I was told unless I paid the $80 additional dollars I would be locked out and car wouldn't start.

Don't know if anyone has ever tried to speak to an actual live person at Smart Start but good luck. I swear they just keep pushing around an automated system till you give up and hang up. I know I'm in this situation with the interlock because of my own poor choices but claiming I missed a rolling test that I KNOW I didn't then charge me with no other option is just taking advantage of people and their situation. Hopefully I can write enough reviews and tell enough people to steer them clear of Smart Start and Poor customer service when you really need help.

Several horrible experiences with this company. First they are not the cheapest as claimed by their aggressive sale reps. They take pride in the fact they don’t charge for calibration. Why would they? Their monthly fee is close to $100. Plus, $80 start up. Their removal fee is $75 and an additional $45 administrative fee which they don’t show you on the fee list you sign. I paid an extra $30 monthly by not selecting a different company, believing that this one would be better because it’s bigger.

By being bigger, good luck trying to reach a human being. When you call needing help if you’re lucky enough to reach a human, most are unable to help because of the lack of knowledge in performing their duties or the absence of information needed to resolve the issue. Aside from the irritation of an inept customer service; I also experienced two personal matters in which I disputed online. The first, well more of a warning to hybrid owners, when you turn off your vehicle wait until all the displays light turn off. The interlock system slows your car’s system shutdown. This happened to me, I disputed and lost. Not really surprised, I mainly wanted my version of this incident on file.

The second matter and the one I believe is truly unjust is a $37.89 fee for a missed appointment that I did not schedule. Smart Start set my appointment for the 25th, I showed up the 26th early for my set calibration. My set date for payment and calibration is the 28th every single month since I started this program. I spoke with the tech who called the back office and spoke with a billing rep. I explained to rep how the 28th is my set date and that I would be getting the device removal shortly. The rep told me that if I could have the device removed by the first that the charge would be voided. I told the rep that I wasn’t positive that I could which then the rep told me that I would need to dispute it online. So I did. Shockingly I did happily have the device removed on the 30th. Unfortunately, smart start did not honor their agreement and I received a confusing email that stated:

    “Incident Report Follow Up
    8/26/23
Thank you for contacting Smart Start.
We have placed your description of the event as a note on your file should it ever be needed in the future.
Unfortunately this fee is no longer eligible for courtesy credits after the one month grace period ending on 8/11/23.

    Thank you.”

I called and left messages inquiring about the email and of course no one replied. I gave one more go at it today where I did speak with a rep that basically told me that I was denied and that there’s no way for me to reach a supervisor.

Hello, I have been fighting with this box/company forever now. This system is flawed and kills batteries. Two tow truck drivers who have had to help me the last 4 times showed me this box has killed my battery and I was charged $45 every single time. This flaw is what is causing the dead batteries. My particular box went into its own loop and was erroring and from that I missed an appointment and was forced again to pay for yet another unlock code and missed appointment fee. I was told on the phone by customer service that when I arrived finally to my second appointment altering having the box force me to miss my first that my amount owing to drive away would be maximum $160.

When I got there I owed $199. This has been happening to me since the box was installed in my car 15 months ago. The box has since been removed and my battery has not died since. I have been denied my refund 3 times now because they claim that the box does not kill batteries. I was not refunded the unlock codes the box error forced me to get it for the missed appointment fee I was charged because of the error. This has been the worst experience of my life. Smart Start Canada has been denied accreditation by the Better Business Bureau for not assisting customers issues and this allows them to operate unchecked with complete impunity. How a government supported business can get away with such damaging business practices.

After having this device installed my vehicle has been at a diesel shop for over 2 weeks. Initially, I told Anne when I picked up my truck the check engine light is on and the ETC warning light is red and flashing. She replied "Oh that’s fine, it should turn off, you may need to cycle the truck on and off a few times." ** and a I don’t care answer. Immediately after leaving the house/shop the truck had no throttle response and could not maintain speed. I messaged Anne and told her the truck was not drivable and sent a picture of the warning lights. No response at all. Later on, I was told the MVD had no record of the device even being installed. Again I reached out to Anne asking for help. Again no response.

Now my truck is finally ready to be picked up from the mechanics. The interlock keeps saying abort pump. 45 minutes to get through to someone and the only solution I could get was to have the truck towed to a Smart Start facility. Over 2 weeks without a vehicle and a huge bill I’m going to have to fight to get reimbursed I’m sure and now your phone support person says, "Sorry our device isn’t working correctly, you’ll have to have it towed to us." More time and money I will need to fight to be reimbursed. Device installed 8/9 and the truck hasn’t been able to be driven yet. Extremely disappointed.

The Interlock system itself is average I did have trouble with a handset but they did replace it right away. My problem with them is the costs involved and the fact that their website shows that you can purchase an extension for your interlock to not lock you out but in fact it's not an extension just away for them to take your money when you file a report about it they tell you that the extensions are not too extend the calibration of your Interlock system. But the website does not State anywhere that it's not for calibration system. So you think that you have an extension when you indeed get locked out and you have to pay the lockout service fee as well as the same months service charge. So my bill that is normally $74.95 turned into $225. Buyer beware when you look at their website they are very unclear and will rob you of your money regretfully the states require you to have interlock for a certain period and they know this and they take full advantage of it.

I was required to install a Smart Start ignition interlock device as part of my DUI sentence. I was initially excited to get the device, as I thought it would be a next step towards license restoration. However, I was quickly disappointed with the device. The first problem I had with the device was that it was outdated. The device was slow and clunky, and it often froze up. One time, while I was driving, the device froze and started flashing and beeping. This caused me to panic, and I almost caused an accident.

Another problem I had with the device was that it often made me blow multiple times before it accepted a test. This was very frustrating, especially when I was in a hurry. Finally, I had a violation lock that Smart Start claimed was due to me shutting off my car when it was asking for a test. I am positive that I did not shut off my car, and Smart Start would not provide me with any proof of fault. They charged me $75 for the violation, and it took almost 3 weeks to find out the reason. Overall, I was very disappointed with the Smart Start ignition interlock device. It is a dated and unreliable device that I would not recommend to anyone. There are better devices out there, and this is one that you should never consider unless you want to lose your license.

After thoroughly interacting with SmartStart, I regret to inform readers that my experience with this company warrants a one-star rating. I cannot recommend this company to anyone in need of their services. First and foremost, customer service is abysmal. I have never dealt with such incompetence. Their product becomes useless at the end of each month and goes into service lockdown. Despite paying a monthly leasing fee for the device on time, it refuses to function as it should. It is disheartening to think that a product intended to serve a crucial function can be this unreliable.

To make matters worse, customer service is a complete waste of time. I spent six hours on the phone with them and learned the same repeated tricks and tips that made 0 progress toward resolving my issue. The first time I called, the representative hung up on me without understanding my problem and put me back on a ridiculously long hold time. Their staff is not adequately trained to handle customer queries, leading to extended wait times and a lack of results.

The kicker of this dreadful experience is the additional charge I received for servicing the device to get it to work. It is beyond me why I should have to pay for their mistake. I won't be surprised if the device goes into service lockdown again because their customer service is the slowest and most incompetent ever. I strongly advise against using SmartStart's services. The lack of functionality of their device, combined with their awful customer service and questionable billing practices, make for a dreadful experience that is not worth anyone's time or money.

First of all. They will answer you immediately upon signing up. Once you are a client of theirs, GOOD LUCK getting them on the phone when their device fails. I have three instances: 1st - was software froze the device and the only way to get this situated was let the battery die. But guess what, YOU ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE STILL. 2nd Issue - Was the same as the 1st. 3rd Issue - I made a payment within my count-down hours and hours prior to my lockout. Guess what? It locked me out and here is why I have decided to write a review on every single site I can cause this is completely UNACCEPTABLE. Especially when you are messing with people's lives and potential violations to their parole officers. Not only did I make a payment hours before the lockout.

Upon calling at their customer service for HELP as this should be a priority to them as it is not allowing their client to blow within their window that could potentially cause errors. I called them at 6pm, put on hold for 30 minutes to finally get a hold of someone. Only to put me on hold again for Service. Another 30 minutes. 7pm comes around, their system hung up on me during my wait-time. Now they’re stating their offices are closed. I continue to call another line for service. Been on hold since then.

Here we are an hour and half into the phones call. With ABSOLUTE NO HELP and my time to blow before 8pm. Now they will put you on hold for a MINIMUM of 45 minutes. How the hell do you expect them to get their resolution resolved and of all three issues I have had to call in. A MINIMUM of one hour wait time. Sometime 2-hours and good luck getting it resolved same day. Now you find yourself worried sick to your stomach hoping your parole office will understand cause now not only will you miss one blow, you will miss the evening blow and the next morning's blow. Guess what? If they send you to a service center. YOU HAVE TO PAY! But I made my payment hours before my lockout. DO NOT GIVE THESE GUYS YOUR BUSINESS. You will find yourself with anxiety to the roof, the longest wait times EVER. They should not be in business with those wait times.,

No phone call back nothing?!?! It’s been a month?!?? I called to reschedule the appt as we are stuck in BC and I called at 842 am (BC time) and the appt was at 9:15 am. Your client care (called back at 0910 (BC) time and wants to charge me a cancelation fee. You ** kidding me!!! After last place told me about you guys being a money grab I'm actually starting to believe it because the box was you guys' fault that we kept having to pay to get it recalibrated because. Wasn’t installed properly installed and then this 20 min shy of 24 hr Alberta time and we get no refund back from all the money we spent in past that it wasn’t our fault and what about the extra few months added on because of it?!?! Bunch of money grab!!!

Like one of your employee said to me “Well we all need to get paid somehow“ and you guys do that kind of ** so you keep money flowing!!! What kind of customer service are you???? ** ones clearly. We have spent almost over 1000 since January 2022. Anyways I want a call back thanks!! He no longer drinks but your machine has costed us enough and every time it screwed up since January we got few months added on!!! Wtf eh anyways hope to talk to you soon as I am not very impressed and hoping that you can maybe agree that you need better customer service skills!! Thanks.

This was the last complaint I wrote over a month ago. I keep getting told a manager will call but nothing??!? Again where is your customer service skills. People are force to have this program but clearly you guys are all about the money not the success passing rate!!!! Just a lil reminder no names edit some changes but it’s like the one I send over a month. Just wanted to remind you that you still haven’t called.

"He got a lock out violation. When he was driving to BC for work 2 week prior and blew a hernia while blowing into your machine while driving kept saying, "Blow harder, blow harder…. Blow harder!!" He blew a hernia!! Yea so now he might be needing surgery. He was running out of unlock codes so the machine has been acting up non stop…. With mouth closer…breath longer.... breath harder.... and He works 6 days on, 1 off and his day off is on Sunday and he is 2 hrs north of Prince George. And he was running out of time and couldn’t take the time off work to go get it recalibrated.

I myself (girlfriend) took my personal car and took time off work to drive from Devon Alberta to Fraser lake BC to get car done for him while he was at work.... so this was an expensive recalibrate!!! So once I got an appt in Prince George for May 18/2022 at 12. So I drove to Prince George 2hr drive to appt from Fraser lake.... once I got to andre electronics I was already kinda on edge and complaining that his wiring needs fixing and it’s always ** up and costing us an arm and a leg. He told me that Smart Start has it set that was because everyone needs a pay check and that you guys were a money grab!!!

So if you check this past few months!! We have spent a lot of money towards this damn box and every time there is a lock a month gets added on so we have to spend more money towards this blow box.... so when this staff told me that I was like wtf!! was not impressed as I spent 12 hrs to drive to location where he was working and then 2 hrs to Andre electronics the next day after booking appt and then to bring the car back to Fraser lake and the next day drive back to Devon Alberta....

Violation lock came back on at 1830h the same day May 18th 2022. I myself was there and witnessed it. I got it fixed earlier on that day anyways!! I'm pissed I called smart start, told them what the staff at Andre electronics said to me about money grab and how everyone needs a paycheck!! So anyways not impressed by the service I receive there!!! When I mention to the staff at Andre electronics that there was wiring issue or something going on!! He also told me (girlfriend) we would have to book another apt to get it fixed.... and there about a month to get in!!

Isn’t his job to make sure the box is working and that we aren’t stranded because we keep getting violation lock. I paid 162 that day and and again the violation lock on same day!! So guess what now!!! Thank god dallas got weekend off but was the long week end most places were closed! So we drove down together (change of plans again because this box is causing us nothing headaches) so now Dallas had to take the day off Tuesday to get car in white court while suppose to be in BC Fraser lake for work!! Again!!! Losing money!!! So lost day pay again!! He has had this box for almost 7 years and been a lot of money wasted because it’s the equipment that keeps screwing up.

So please take a look at his file. Would be greatly appreciated if you took the time to maybe speak with alberta transportation and mention that it’s the equipment. Yes there was two battery dead because car was in shop but to be honest now it just turns off and on while driving!! So it has a mind of its own!! So we can be stranded places anywhere and anytime!!! How safe is that when my children are with us.

The Edmonton south location has changed the head within the past month… we have had nothing but problem for past few months…. Since we got told that box would be out on June 20th 2022. And this day we got told was on April 21/2022 at the south side location in Edmonton!! I write everything down so I ask the staff at Andre electronics!! Do they do things so you can never get off this blow box program and we have to keep paying and paying??? He said that comment I was speechless!!! Furious.

If Andre electronics would of fixed the issue with the box. Wiring It wouldn’t of had costed us as much as it already did by having me drive there!!! Or even Edmonton south side location when we mentioned it and gave us issues they just gave us new head and cord and along the way we go. But again violation lock. Every time this box screws up it’s costing us a lot of money!! So try out to find out what the problem is such as new head cords?!?!? That should be on you guys' dime if receive violation lock!! Because it’s your product malfunctioning not us!!

But the lady that I have been dealing with in the evenings on the telephone has been really wonderful and understanding with our situation.... Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am frustrated and disappointed that this box is costing us way too much as He no longer drinks anymore. Please feel free to call me."

Smart Start is the worst company, of any type, to work with. Device worked 50% of time. I had to replace unit 3 times. Closest Service center was 30 miles away. I had to have vehicle towed to service center twice at my expense although the reason for towing was their fault. Calling main company is a nightmare. Hold times are up to 90 minutes. Once I was on hold for 90 minutes and call was terminated. Can take up to ten (10) prompts before speaking with human being. I am very hard of hearing and would miss "blows" resulting in violations. All they could do was install flashing light which was difficult to see and I had to take my eyes off road to see it. I requested a vibrating device that I could place in my lap but was told they did not offer that feature.

The service center was very nice and did the best they could but my real complaints are about the call center. Many were poorly trained, and usually had to wait for a supervisor to resolve my issue. The expense was horrendous, commute time long, and they were constantly changing policy. For example: when I first started the service center was open weekends making it easier for us working individuals. Then poof! No more weekend access without prior warning. I can't leave enough negative feedback for this company. I would not recommend them to anyone and for that reason I am leaving 1 star. The only employee that stands out for excellent performance is Jessica. She was great at customer service.

He never smiles, he acts like he’s better than you, and he’s always right, or he thinks he is. I’ve been dealing with this for over a year and decided after I was locked out of my car at the airport in Atlanta from being gone two weeks, I was switching companies. Well so I thought. I received permission to have the device taken out 3 weeks ago and nothing. I even called last week and the lady told me there was no record of the approval letter written from the state.

Now, I’ve got to drive an hour to see this very rude and very hard to be around shop technician. My advice… stay away!!! Smart Start thinks they are superior to even the law, and you almost have to get the law involved just to have the device removed. Poor customer service, customer relations, poor prices, poor policies, poor device (the humming is **), overall the worst experience I’ve had in years!

When the compliance period was complete, they failed to file the paperwork with the DMV, despite sending us an email saying they did. There is no ability to escalate a discussion to a supervisor, and attempts to file a complaint are ignored. Absolutely THE WORST business I've ever had the displeasure to deal with.

As part of my sons plea deal he agreed to have the blow device in his car for one year. It has now been two years that it has been on. When we called many times, we can never actually talk to a person. EVER. When we called the DMV we were told that it was reported that the device was removed. Transferred and had been tampered with. All of which was not true.

We were told due to this negative report he has to keep it on another year from the date of the report. We have done everything possible to try and reach someone and gets this straightened, out to no avail. We took it in two weeks ago to be calibrated. They had no clue what they were doing at the new place we took it to. The tech called Smart Start for instructions. They told him to remove it and un attach the GPS then try. He did as instructed. calibrated it and said we are good to go. Two weeks later its on Locked out. For zero reason. How do I know all this? It's my car.

Again it was reported that it was removed and reinstalled. Yes, that time it was. BY SMART START! So now his year starts all over from that date. There seems to be no way to fight this. Its literally causing my son and I so much distress and a huge financial burden. Yes, my son made a huge mistake and he learned his lesson. He was never in any trouble in his life before and nor since. He is Bipolar and and has been extremely depressed to the point of suicide. He is so discouraged and is ready to give up his license and get out from under this nightmare company.

The fact that our laws allow a company like this to rip off people over and over again ,with no recourse, is disgusting. The fact that my mentally ill son is so discouraged to the point he's willing to give up his license to make this nightmare be over, is heartbreaking. -Called to set up an install. They gave me a date. I went down and found out they were booked up for almost 2 months! Called back and they tried putting it on me saying I didn't schedule one (which is very common practice).

    - Called to get an extension because it was a holiday weekend. They said "oh no problem. There's a 72 hour code you can get for $30." Great right? Come to find out at the shop if you USE THE CODE it's another $130 on top of the 30 you already paid!!!! Which they do not inform you of even dodging talking about it when you ask!!

    - Called in because I couldn't make the appointment and they said I got a 72 hour extension yesterday and they had the call log which is completely false. "Use the 6 hour code. It's free. No additional charge." Then they informed me since I lived in Colorado I could get 3 of the 6 hour codes so I could use one to get home from work and one in the morning to get to the shop. I asked multiple times to be sure. I called and the code did not change nor work. I called customer service and said that I was told I could use 3 and she replied "they did not say that!" In a yell. I said the call was recorded and to check it but she cut me off saying "no no no. I'm not going to argue with you. You can buy a 24 hour code or a 72 hour code." She was so rude. I asked for a supervisor and waited waited waited and left a message. No call.

Called back because I have to get to work and just caved to buy the code. They said I couldn't buy the code until the manager called me back in an hour. It's now been 2 hours and I haven't got to work. Terrible terrible terrible customer service. They just extort you and blatantly lie to you. Unbelievably shady business. My service center I go to monthly and now myself have been calling non-stop to try and get this resolved.

Today I was transferred to the collections dept from customer service without even listening to why I was calling. When I got to collections the woman on the phone interrupted me as I was explaining myself, FIRST OFF, you do not interrupt the customer. Ever. I continued to explain my situation and she began to yell at me stating that I was talking over her and then she hung up on me. I can't even believe it. I hope this woman gets corrective action for this. I understand you probably hate your job but that's on you. Get busy and apply yourself for a better position where you might find happiness. If you're too useless to do that then deal with the fact that the customer has priority in calls and conversations.

The service and runaround I've been given today has now forced me to find another company to finish out my year with. I don't care that I'm gonna pay a disconnect fee and new installation fee. I will not be disrespected like I have been today again. If you're looking for an Interlock Company take my advice and DO NOT make the mistake of selecting Smart Start. These guys are a joke. I can never get anyone on the line to help. The support line gives you an option for a call back but they never do so just stay on the line. I found out that the shops that do all the actual work on the interlock only make 20 bucks per service. So where is all the money going? It sure isn't the equipment or the customer service. My interlock started going off all the time so the tech said he was going to hook me up with an older model because they actually work. Soak that in. Can't believe I am legally bound to these snakes.

Faulty equipment. General Motors has on demand charging systems on their newer vehicles and this device does not recognize that the vehicle is running upon startup when the voltage doesn’t go up. This allowed for a running vehicle with no tests. Their solution was to reprogram the head unit, to trick the device into thinking the truck is already running now before startup which initiates a 4 min. countdown to provide a breath sample. So if I don’t blow when the vehicle is not running it will fail me for missing a test. It is also not compatible with any auto start/stop feature your vehicle may have. My vehicle has shut down many times at lights causing traffic delays while having to blow at a green light to get the vehicle moving again. After expressing my concerns to multiple reps with no fix to the issues I’ve been having, the device will be uninstalled in my vehicle.

I would not recommend this company to anyone trying to get their life back in order after a DUI. Being convicted and having to install an interlock device is bad enough. It’s shameful and embarrassing. But that’s the price you pay. You then put your trust in an interlock company that should be helping you get through it all, only to find out the cost keeps going up. There’s an extra $90.00 here and an extra $30.00 there. It adds up. The customer service gets worse, if any at all. In my opinion, this is a company that preys on this misfortune and steals from their customers. All they care about is your money. Please don’t be fooled and taken advantage of. Smart Start and their equipment just isn’t a smart choice. Like others had mentioned I’m sure a lot of the positive reviews are phony. It’s not hard to tell which ones they are. Read them.

I would also like to add that I am currently getting this device removed from my vehicle. Between the 1-800#, local franchises, and shops it seems like there is a serious lack of communication. You need to call the 1-800#, then told to “call the shop” and then to “call the local smart start office” only for them to tell you to call the 1-800# again.

Upon removal of the interlock there are spliced wires exposed now, under the hood, which I now have to fix. Their wiretaps were left in place under the dash and a ground wire that was simply just cut off and left dangling under the steering column. Not something you want to see on a 2021 GMC Sierra. Slash and dash gas station mechanics is what you will get on your installs and removals. Very unprofessional.

I am not editing this review, as I stand behind it, but I did talk with a gentleman named Kevin who reached out to me about my experience. We actually laughed a little. I did appreciate the fact that he called me about my concerns and actually reached out to the Massachusetts franchise about my issues. They are now issuing me a refund check for $150. It seems I was overcharged for the removal… go figure. Also they offered me a $50 gift card if I could bring the vehicle back to a different shop 2 hours from where I live to get the wiring issues addressed. It’s likely not worth it for me to do that but I did appreciate the offer. I will just fix it myself. Thanks to Kevin, they are at least offering some sort of resolve. Wish there were more people like him to talk to at smart start. Seems like the rest of the company is run by cats.

I would give Kevin 5 stars for his customer service, but this review is about the company as a whole and the terrible experience I had with them. I would wish my experience I had with Smart Start upon no one.

Where do I begin. This company cares zero for you as a customer, human, or otherwise. I have been lied to, hung up on, and overcharged during a deadly global pandemic. I have been told to ‘not use hand sanitizer’, As it will set off the device, putting not only my health at risk, but also those in my community, my elders who I love, and basically anyone I come into contact with. Is this even legal??? I had been given an old broken device from another car, which was randomly giving violations, honking, and sucking my car battery dry. The electric in my vehicle was always going haywire, sometimes working, sometimes not. This is VERY dangerous. Drinking and driving is dangerous, but I only did that once. Smartstart as a company has forced me to drive dangerously, risk the health of my loved ones daily for ten months.

This is the email I finally received today: “Your lockout from Oct 22nd will not be refunded as the device was not malfunctioning. Introducing a substance like hand sanitizer that is almost pure alcohol into a unit that is designed to detect alcohol is not a device malfunction. This is a direct user error and the only individual that can keep this from happening is you. When a lockout occurs from an error such as this the fees will be due.”

I have not used hand sanitizer in my vehicle since March 15! I have clearly stated this. My mechanic told me the equipment was faulty, AND SWITCHED IT OUT! We are being lied to and treated poorly. This company is violating our god given right to protect ourselves and others during a pandemic. DO NOT! I repeat, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

I cannot really add to the reviews that precede mine. I agree with all of them. The device, the service, the company, and the use of this failed unit is deplorable. There is nothing consistent with any of these. The device must have been programmed by 1st grader. It gives conflicting and nonsensical errors, e.g. "blow longer" as soon as I start blowing. I may have found a trick to "resetting" the device.

I was recently stuck in "temp viol". My installer had no idea what this code meant, nor did Smart Start. One of Smart's technicians spent an hour trying to void it and got nowhere. Finally, he told me to disconnect the negative battery cable for no more than 1 minute. It worked! I've done that 2 more times since and had no problems with the device. It seems to work like pulling the plug on your computer when it freezes. It's like a reboot. I have two more months to deal with this POS. I'll say one thing in its favor, I'll never drink and drive again knowing what I have to deal with.

Terrible experience... They make this company mandatory in Canada to deal with and everyone at Smart Start knows it so they take advantage of everyone. My device requires me to blow when I turn my vehicle off and go in a store. I’ll come back and catch the device counting down from 10 minutes asking for a rolling retest... and most of the time I’m not so lucky. 60 bucks a pop and 5 days to make your appointment which is a 3 hr drive for me. This happens several times a month. Within 4 months the lady said my account is now at 1400 dollars paid from violations not including the 500 dollar install. All fingers are pointed at me... keep paying if you want to drive even if you're being scammed.

I have gotten violations just sitting in my vehicle charging my phone. Now they are requesting a breath to use the battery source??? Apparently, you cannot sit in your vehicle and turn your accessory power onto the vehicle without providing a test... It took until today for someone in customer service to tell me If you leave your key forward for 10 min without blowing it will automatically give a violation. News to my ears... They are so back and forth it makes me sick. Everything about this company makes me sick... to the managers, customer service and the people installing them are all liars.

If you turn your vehicle off/ vehicle not running and then turn your key forward to do up a window or put your seat back the device won’t recognize you shut your vehicle off.... nothing but a Scam! I got videos of the device doing some crazy stuff but no one even cares to look at it. They tell you to take a screenshot. Unreal. Try any way possible not to deal with company. I have 9 months left out of a year and I’ve already paid them 2000 dollars Total and booked in 5 days with another violation. Tell me I’m not the only one.

I don't know where to begin with this company, Several problems at installation? Customer service? The businesses they use to represent them for equipment install? Let's start first with my latest complain, how they will basically steal your money. I have the unit for 3 months now they put the cord across the top of the steering wheel where it was contently ribbing and actually wore a hole thru the cable but the thing that got me was it ran down the side of the ignition switch. Well one time when car was shut off the switch didn't go all the way to the off position causing a false alert that the car was left on by making horn go off and lights flash. I went back into the garage and found this to be the problem.

I immediately called Smart Start and after 40 min finally talked to someone who said, "You won't be charged if you go to the web page and file a dispute." WRONG. They never got back to me so after 6 weeks I called again. After another 45 min wait and talking to a rude young woman who talked in circles, she told me that her supervisor said it stands and they are keeping my money. This is what she told me after first telling me to file a complaint again which now I can see would have been a waste of time.

I have read complaint after complaint about this company but I thought naaa not me. I just hope someone who is considering using this service to go somewhere else, anywhere else, because apparently they are making enough money off charging people for false alerts and blaming their lack of professionalism on other people. They don't have to care about customer service. More to follow...

I’ve had a Smart Start installed now for 18 months. I’m an air conditioning installer/refrigeration mechanic and average at least one - two if not three unscheduled services a month due to the contaminates on my clothing or on my hands. Eg refrigerants, pvc glue, hand sanitiser or refuelling my vehicle with the window down and allowing fumes to enter my vehicle. Obviously none of these mean that I’ve consumed alcohol and still receive Breaches. I’ll try and keep this brief and only describe three unscheduled services....

#1 Left home .000 drove for less than 10 minutes and arrived at my client's address. Within the first five minutes of driving you have your first random test which means the camera is still on so they can see your movements, again .000. Started to unpack my tools And then got asked by client if I could move my car So they could do a school run but was unable to start my vehicle due to a high reading and got locked out for half an hour. After the lockout period a .000 reading was recorded. Unfortunately those kids got to school late that day.

#2 Due to Covid 19 the use of hand sanitiser Or any type of hand wipes Sets it off. Depending on what you have for lunch Vietnamese salad roll with chilli and soy sauce any sort of Chinese or Thai cuisine, most fruits Will cause a breach with you being locked out.

#3 The one that upsets me the most. Batemans Bay and surrounding areas recently experienced devastating bushfires which meant most of us had to evacuate. After queueing up for over a kilometre to get fuel And arriving in your only opened service station in town which was very chaotic and very crowded at the time and all 24 pumps going at one time the atmosphere was full of fumes which put my car again in lockdown mode. Having to get help to push my vehicle off the premises which was very distressing and upsetting at the time. Due to the bushfires and the holiday period my local service centre was closed, which meant my only means of transport severely Restricted.

When I rang Smart Start they offered me a code at my cost but still needed to have an unscheduled service done within a time frame which was impossible... They once again displayed No common decency, A Lack of compassion or understanding of the situation and blamed me for the situation I was in. There was no concern regarding my safety at the time.

In all three circumstances there has never been any alcohol consumed

It is so difficult to blow and I am so scared that I will be stranded on the side of the road (happened the first day) that I don't want to even go near the vehicle. There was no booklet, no directions and little to no training provided at install. The unit is also massive. Had LifeSafer before which was so easy to use. Never felt scared to drive the car or that I would be stranded. The unit itself was also smaller and more discreet. Very disappointed so far and scared to death to drive it.

As the headline says, don't use Smart Start- you will regret it! Why? Extremely poor customer service! Hold times of greater than 10 minutes when you need to call in. Employees who are rude on the phone and fail to answer the phone and properly introduce themselves, like they are working from their living room watching TV. Incident reports that should be answered within 7 business days that aren't.

Refunds that are due to their customers that are never provided because employees won't answer their phones but instead place you on hold for indefinite amounts of time-- all sales strategies to avoid providing refunds due to their customers. In my case I pre-paid 2 months for an inter-lock device and then when I was eligible to remove it, and owed over $120, I can never get the collections and credit department to either return my call or answer their phones! Think trying to call a supervisor would work? Tried calling Hugo to complain about poor customer service from Ashton and Decora and can't even get a call back from him.

I'm still on hold while writing this review, going on 20 minutes! When you call to get your device installed, the sales department will be nice as pie! But when you need to call them back for other issues, which most certainly will arise, it will be nearly impossible to get any help! Instead you'll get to listen to their background music, of very poor taste, along with details about how to schedule a payment plan on their online portal, which will certainly fail to address the other 99 reasons you might be calling and especially if it includes any money they owe you in the form of a credit!!!! Stay away from them and find a better provider! They are amateurs and can't adequately support the clients they are lucky to have. You've been warned.

I initially went online left a great review prior to having the device put into my car because that's what they asked of me. After having the device into my car I realized that the device was not up to par. It was almost impossible to blow in it at times for that long. Within four days I was locked out and had to pay $75. They refused to reimburse me to $75 even after I got a new device that works fine. All the five star reviews are probably given right after people deal with customer service and not after they have used the device. I was given a second device that works fine and they still refuse to reimburse me to $75 even though the first device did not work well. All I can say after my time with Smart Start is that they are all a bunch of disrespectful, arrogant thieves. It is completely a monetary deal with them and to all of them you are nothing but a low life, lying drunk and they speak to you with that exact same tone. My review would be too long to explain every negative issue and horrible detail of mine but I cannot explain how much they lie saying they are there to make your life easier because they are not. They will tell you you have a right to appeal an accidental incident (like I did with sanitizer) then they will just deny you, blame you and treat you like crap.

They will frustrate, demoralize and degrade you (I have a response letter from my appeal to prove it) and they will not help you in any way. To Smart Start you are a dumb nobody alcoholic who is being forced by the courts to pay for a service such as theirs and there is no way around it so they completely get away with their attitudes, tones, and disregard of your life because they can, and the courts and PO’s are backing them up. Sure you can switch service providers but the amount of paperwork involved from them, the courts and the dmv not to mention the amount of money it will cost to switch is very costly and will probably drive you crazy.

Choosing their services was the biggest mistake I have ever made as I was fooled by their initial concern and compassion for my needs at the moment. Don’t let them entice you with their lies! I feel they should all be very ashamed of themselves for dwelling on individuals who’ve made a mistake in life then hide behind the courts and laws to force people to pay and treat people like dirt. Karma will no doubt have its day with each of them for the treatment of people in this uncalled and misdirected way. Customers have no way to challenge or complain about their treatment of us and this is unacceptable. Someone needs to hold them accountable for their actions. And they do it randomly so be prepared for it, there will be a countdown during this time and you won't be able to blow for more 10 min. RCW states that you must retest within 10 min. They know this. The false positive will force you out of the 10 min mark during the countdown. When you call the hotline and finally get through the prompts that take 5 minutes to get through there will be a prompt letting you know that you need to unplug and replug the device in order to retest. They will make you come in for a download, charge you a fee and they'll tell you that you'll have to make an incident report in order to get your money back or to remove the fee but when you make an incident report they will tell you that it is a contaminant and your fault.

There is no supervisor at the call center, they forward you to a voicemail and never call back, rude over the phone and they most of all take advantage of you financially because you already have legal issues. I dont care how nice the techs are. The Corporate office will rip you off. Nasty individual that put my health in harm's way by doing this. Along with additional fines, saying MISSED TESTS!?? Stay away from Freeport Avenue Sound-$$$$ As far as the company Smart Start. Horrible customer service, they do not acknowledge anything you tell them is wrong and you are then in the Rears -$$$. There is a much better company out there, I wish I had chosen that one! Just had this installed in my vehicle on Feb 28th. It took the technician in Maple Ridge 8 hours to install it and they charged me an extra $100 “specialty fee” because it’s a Nissan Murano. On the way home.. it was acting weird.. beeping so I had to go back a few days later (and $67 dollars for them to reset it) for another 3 hours. Few days later was at my friend's house.. and left to go home about 3 am. Had a violock4day code..??? Called customer service and they said I missed a rolling test.. Between 11:30pm and 12:45. I WASNT IN THE CAR then??? Back to the shop for another $67 reset (3 more hours and another day of work missed).

Few days go by and I’m out for my birthday with friends and I get a call over the loud speaker That my horn is going off.. ...ANOTHER rolling violation only This time.. the device was in my purse inside the establishment I was in.... so.. back again to get It reset and ANOTHER $67 and missed another day of work. Plus it was my birthday. Tonight.. 1:45am.. sleeping and the horn is going off outside.. device inside my purse...I’m so sick of this...

First of all when you applying online customer service asks for your social security via email, that’s alerted me in a beginning. Second, device itself looks like old rotary phone. :) Come on we are in 21st century now. Paying $82 a month will buy you new iPhone. Third, camera that installed in your car violates all your privacy and your passengers privacy as well. And finally it’s unsafe from medical point (hygiene) to have this plastic blow tube in your car which you can’t even disinfect and you know why.

6 months of hell, with faulty interlock. Smart Start keep telling me recall 3 means problem with my car battery or alternator. RACV tell me that battery etc is fine, that problem is with interlock. Had car towed 3 times to service centre, they fix and say it was problem with interlock. But nothing on record of this. Finally swapped over for new unit last week car was disabled again, 3rd time. Due to get it removed in 2 weeks, so I register with AIMS to see about applying for getting interlock removed, to my horror, I found that I had 2 violations for not blowing into device when requested, which I was totally unaware of, and that I have acquired another 6 months of hell on top of my time already served.

I suspected and worried something like this might happen as the unit has been been so unpredictable, recall 2 constantly, which smart start say is just camera issue and if intermittent to not worry, horns/alarms blowing randomly for no known reason, constantly have to unplug handset to reset as it gives me no blow option. Quite a few times I've had to leave it overnight at work or at shopping centers because I couldn't start it. Then next day return and it starts. Anyone had success with disputing these violations? Who to contact, Vic Roads weren't any help.

This has been a total nightmare from day 1. Within the first 10 minutes of driving home after the install I was prompted to take a rolling re-test. No matter what I tried it wouldn't work. It kept prompting me to "blow harder" or "blow longer" & multiple other error messages. No matter what I did it wouldn't take it. I finally had no choice but to turn the car off because the horn was blaring and lights flashing and I was in a residential neighborhood & people were literally coming out of their homes to see what was going on. Of course, if you turn it off without completing your rolling retest you get a violation. So strike one within the first hour of having the thing! There is no rhyme or reason to it. What works one time won't the next.

5 days after having it I went to pick my daughter up from school and my brand new battery was dead. After charging it for 4 hours I tried to start it. The first test said "retry" so I waited 2 minutes and passed. This morning when I tried to start it it gave me an error message and said I had violations. I called the place that installed it and was told to bring it in. The guy told me that on the day it was dead when I tried to blow in it the first time at 7:12pm it had a reading so high that I would've been "belligerent drunk." Keep in mind I hadn't had anything to drink not to mention it only said "retry" and when I took it 2 minutes later at 7:14pm I passed.

I told the guy "so you're telling me my levels were that drunk but I magically sobered up 2 minutes later???" The guy tells me "maybe it was your mouthwash." That makes no sense whatsoever. He told me there was nothing he could do and I had to file a claim with the company. I had to pay him $50 to reset the stupid thing. This thing has been nothing but a nightmare from day 1. It's nothing but a money-making racket for this company. I've had this thing for a week and my nerves are shot every time I even think about getting in my vehicle. Someone needs to do something and make this company accountable.

I have had the Smart Start interlock installed in my car for just about 2 months. I only had one issue in the first month with the unit telling me I had failed a test when I was trying to start my vehicle. 2 minutes later I blew and it was a pass. This month has been absolutely horrible and stressful due to the fact that this thing has a malfunction every single day.

I deliver pizzas for work and am in my car more than I am not. I have been in the middle of a delivery shift and the unit will say 'warn' after driving for hours. The countdown of the 6 minutes will start and freeze on 5:58 almost every single time it goes off. I was curious if it would keep beeping and let it go for 10 minutes and it will just keep beeping. The unit has left me stranded with my daughter in the car after dinner because it says 'abort pump', it has displayed all numbers and letters while driving. I have not drank since I had gotten into trouble and I was trying to make it to work the other morning and the unit kept displaying 'violation' I kept trying because obviously I hadnt drank and it was 9 AM and it locked me out.

I called Smart Start and she said we had to wait until it let me try again and we tried to air out the car of my perfume, clean inside the piece where the mouth piece goes and swish my mouth with water and it kept saying violation. It said at the bottom violation lockout 72 hour but the lady never told me I had to get it into the shop before the countdown was up. I went to go to the grocery store and it said 'violation lockout' so now I have to take it up in the morning to get it fixed and hopefully get another unit.

I am not looking forward to dealing with the overly rude lady that works at the Smart Start shop and Im sure they are going to try to charge me an insane amount when this is not user error but horrible issues with their units. I wish I had done my research on the smart start devices before I had it installed. I would not recommend this company to anyone. I also think they are a total driving hazard. Not only does the darn thing give me extreme anxiety it's an extreme distraction while driving.

Started off with a coupon for free installation and 25$ off. Took it to the installer and he says, "mail it in with the contract". SO I do. They claim they never got the contract. So two months later, I have to fill out another contract, and I tell the install tech "here's another copy of the coupon". He says, "mail it in again". This time I make another copy and mail it in. They "never got it" again. Then they say "Oh that's our Texas address, they never forward us contracts, send it to our michigan (unpublished) addresss. So I send the contract without the coupon and call the MI line and they say, bring it back into the tech and they will take it.

Two months later (I have to have it calibrated every two months) I bring it back to the tech, and he says, "call while I'm calibrating and find out what's up." They tell me, "you should have emailed it. We won't honor it now. It's been 6 months". Thing is I sent it in twice and brought it in twice and they claim they never got it. I have pictures and tracking verification they did.

Not to mention the whole time, since day 1. The device fails. Abort tamper. Then shuts off. Then flashes power completely and won't let me blow. Reinitializes, starts up again and suddenly I have a minute left to blow. Rolling retests during driving, it says "blow/abort tamper" repeats without even allowing a breath sample. I bring it in and show the tech, he says "yeah that's a bad device. Here's a new one." Smart Start says "too bad, pay us". 50$ a time. Video proof of all this. Rolling restart failure, abort tamper then flash and repeat, and rolling retest power flashes and device restart/initializations. All of it recorded multiple times.

Call corp office and smartstart says "nope still gotta pay". After 300$ in 6 months of extra fees for "violations" (always supposed rolling retest violations) the manager says "maybe it's a bad cord, pay us 25$ for the cord and then 50$ for the violation reset, and then 178 for the fees and we will change it. The cord is a 'wear and tear' item so you're responsible for it." WHAT?! You installed a faulty item and I have to pay you to fix it on top of the 300$ in fees it's cost me for having "violations" in rolling retests?!! Guess what.... Not even the cord. Faulty equipment and I get to pay for it. AVOID THEM.

Started getting Violation lockouts and other listings on the Display window after doing the blow test in 3 different time windows set up on the machine for daily testing. I pay $80.81 a month for the device, now with the Violation Lockout/ Service Lockouts, they charge $53.54 to unlock the machine every time the Lockouts occur. Regardless of the Complaints to Corporate or the tech where you get the unit (supposedly serviced) the tech does nothing but download the unit and take your money. Being this is a court ordered device, you are forced to comply to the payments set by this company or be in violation of your court order????

Excuse my language, but this company has you by the balls and they know it and take advantage of the situation by the machine giving these false readings. In my personnel opinion, they set/program these machine's to give these Lockout situation's to get all they can get from you money wise???? Plus, causing you problems with your probation requirements. It Seems awfully strange to me that the violations leading to the Lockouts occur in the Evening time window, 5:00p.m / 8:00p.m. And as I stated to Corporate and the service tech, that time frame is during my dinner/ supper time of the day. And over and over telling them that I have had no alcohol at all the whole time I've had this machine. I was even told by Corporate that they would place my Complaints in my file, and that the tech where I get the machine serviced would check out the unit and replace it if necessary.

You tell the tech what Corporate said and he just replies, "Well something is causing the collections," downloads the machine, takes your payment, and nothing is done as far as checking out the unit???? The machine hasn't been cleaned since I've had it, which leads me to believe it was more than likely not cleaned since the individual before me used it. As I stated previously, your Complaints fall on deaf ears, they are only in it for the money and know there's nothing you can do about it???? I did not even give this company 1 star on the rating scale, they don't even come close to 1 star!!!! Well I guess I have to give at least a 1 star on the rating scale, or my review will not go thru????

I never received fails, or warnings because I did not try and drink and operate this device. It never once drained my car battery. Loud music does not effect the blow as I've read in some complaints, nor does food, these will not cause a failed test. I was never locked out. Just follow the rules, don't skip rolling tests and get through the process. You aren't fooling anyone trying to say it failed you for no reason. Nine months and had no problems at all. I was very upset I wrote Into an incident report. They say takes 3-6 business days for responses. I finally get a response, in the response they don’t do anything or verify that they acknowledge the incident instead after calling they told me to send the email, the email then tells me to call Service Techs. So I do.

After being on hold for 20 minutes (no exaggeration) they answer the phone. They then explain to me information I have already been told about how to avoid violations. I tell them the machine is faulty. Something is wrong. They don’t believe. They tell me that I miss a blow and that’s not what happened so then they redirect to what they call “admin department.” I talk to the admin. They tell me they have no evidence of my incident report. I then getting frustrated ask to speak to management. The employee going by “Z” tells me they don’t communicate with management or even have a number to speak with a supervisor. “So the employees don’t even have to talk to management?” I say. “There is no way for us to contact them at all.” They tell me. “So what can I do to resolve this?” I ask.

They said, “There’s nothing I can or anyone else can do for you sir, I can redirect you to the service department for training on the device,” and so on in this one order I was redirect or sent to three different departments l, after multiple trips to their actually Smart locations. This device is made to malfunction and the customer service is a joke and it’s a loop like someone mentioned earlier.

And so I am going to be contacting an attorney and fight to see if I can get my reimbursement and something to make it so this problem goes away and if there are other people out there who would like to be informed or part of this potential lawsuit please send me an email and description of your experience and I’ll see what we can do about a potential class action law suit.

Smart Start installed my machine incorrectly, because of the incorrect installation which resulted in the device not recognizing that the car was turned off and would continue to ask for rolling retests despite being turned off. I noticed this right away as the installation tech told me to wait until I see the restart countdown begin before leaving my vehicle. As I did not see it, I called Smart Start immediately and made them aware of the problem. They walked me through several steps to try to fix the problem, including disconnecting and then reconnecting the head unit. After attempting to troubleshoot the issue over the phone and it failing they scheduled a re-installation appointment to fix the issue.

While I was on the phone with the tech he mentioned that he thought they had connected the device to the remote start wire instead of the installation wire. While the device was working incorrectly I had received several violation as it would ask for rolling retests while the car was turned off and no one was in it. I had made mention of the recorded violations and asked if Smart Start would relay the information that they mistake with the installation when sending the info over, including the violations to the state. They said that the state had access to the file and could see the notes. Well lo and behold, they did not inform the state of their mistake and the state revoked my driver's license.

The only course of action I had was to hire an attorney and repeal the revocation and provide proof of their mistake. So, I called Smart Start and asked them to provide me with the service records so I can forward them to the state as proof of Smart Start's mistake. They refused to do this even though they read the record to me on the phone and it was the exact information I needed. Aside from that getting a hold of a competent employee is like rolling the dice, you will lose almost all of the time. The only access they give you a manager is a voicemail of which I have made several calls to and the call was never returned.

The only course of action I can see that might retrieve a result is to sue them for gross incompetence and plead my case to the judge and hope they see the same disgusting injustices that I have experienced from this company. This is the worst service I have received from any company, not limited to these circumstances. Why is it you are always treated the worst by companies when you have no other choice... I thought Monopolies were illegal, I guess not if they work with the state. If you have another option I can only assume they will be much much better than Smart Start. This company is the most frustrating and difficult to deal with. It can't be legal right? First I want to start by saying I have been sober for 15 months. Don't eat, drink or use any products with alcohol in it yet I received a violation for alcohol use. Riddle me that. More money spent and off to the shop. Then a faulty wire and car won't start so I have to pay for a tow. This was in May and still haven't received reimbursement even though I filed the proper incident report and followed up several times. No one can help you when you call customer service.

Yesterday I took the car to the shop to get my monthly calibration and mechanic couldn't finish because there was a hold on my account. Yet when I called no one could tell me what the hold was for. This was the 3rd month in a row that there was a mysterious hold on my account. So here I go back to the shop this morning. My time and money are valuable and this company has wasted much of it. The legal system dished me out my consequences for my DUI. It is not Smart Start's job to do so. There are many other companies that you can use for an IID. DO NOT USE THIS ONE. I don't even know how it is legal to operate this thieving business. The reviews speak for themselves.

When the device doesn’t power on, you’ll be left stranded since there’s no way to start your vehicle. Unfortunately I’m sitting in my work parking lot so it’ll be quite a show when the tow truck arrives. I was out $75 for towing last time around and probably out $100 this time. I was told that I can contact Smart Start to get reimbursed for the towing charge so we’ll see how that goes. Absolutely do not choose this device! Luckily I can get it out of my car in 3 months, but who knows if I’ll need to get my car towed back to the shop again if it stops working again before then.

If I could give this company 0 stars I would! I would never recommend anyone getting this interlock installed in their car. You never know if you’re going to get in your car and the machine will actually work. There have been countless times where the car would not start, even after unplugging the battery. So much fun not being able to go to work because your car won’t start and the interlock machine is not working, surprise, surprise. Or how about being stuck at a store or amusement park with 3 upset toddlers and turn the key, only to get dead silence.

Seems like taking it to one of their “recommended” dealers is another joke, since nobody seems to know how this machine works. This company is a laughing stock and loves collecting money from you. Good luck trying to speak to a manager or supervisor about your issues, they are always never around. Check out all these reviews about Smart Start Inc and you’ll get the idea of what your future might hold with their device installed in your vehicle. I had the device in the car for a year. Then one day it would not power on. I called the service center and they said tow the car to them and they would look at it. It would cost $150 to tow the car and they would reimburse $100. I had a friend look at it. He found the wire that powers it came loose due to a sloppy installation. Once he connected the wire the device then displayed "SRV/LOCKOUT" He removed the device from the car because it had to be moved and I attempted to return it to the service center and they would not take it back. So I contacted Smart Start and they said I had to pay $105 lockout fee. I refused to pay anything because the device failed through no fault of my own.

One person from their collection department told me to fill out an incident report online which I did. It said wait 7 days for a response. After 2 weeks still no response. But I got a response every week from collection department now looking for monthly fee plus lockout fee. I informed them I was waiting for a response to my incident report. The next day customer service responded "There is no incident report from me." So I sent in 8 more incident reports. 4 days later, I got a response, "You were not charged a lockout fee." I don't know if they're customer service people can't read or can't comprehend simple English. Dealing with them and trying to get them to comprehend the situation is impossible.

I have in the past use another interlock company with no problems. At the beginning with Smart Start there were no issues in four months. All of a sudden it would accept no blows showing “blow longer” - well not allowing me to blow past a second. This it would do on my entire 40 minute mountainous drive until a violation occurred and I had four days to clear it. After paying it, and genuinely believing I would be reimbursed because it was as stated in their policy “not due to Anything I did” basically.

This started three months of constant every four days paying $75 to get the violation lock taken off, resulting in a $400 total extra bill before they finally gave me an ancient Ken said that doesn’t require as much long capacity to pass. No problems since (except For one, after I swallowed a handful of vitamins after lunch and drink half a pop and immediately blew another violation). (I rinsed my mouth and blew right after and it was fine. The violation remained though.) I was shuffled from one person and one department to another everyone saying just fill out the incident report until finally corporate office referred me back to the poor tech-support guy who was the only one that finally helped me with a unit that would work for me. His hands are tied, everyone’s hands are tied...

No matter what they state on their website regarding these occurrences no one is giving you any refunds back. This type of false claims and basically stealing from the already struggling to get back on their feet financially strapped person doing everything right should be brought to justice. Everyone says there’s nothing they can do and I won’t stop until something is done about this. Within a short amount of time this company could be completely out of business if we speak up in the right places, I am giving them a few more chances to make it right, as should the other people who have experienced the same, then take it to another level. If I had known this before signing with Smart Start I never would have other people need to know.

This is not a company to be trusted, you can do absolutely everything right and end up owing them so much as the violations continue for no reason, while they promise you to get back with the refund within 2 to 7 days. I wish the first time this had happened I had switched companies but now I am in too far. I will get my money back, I have a debt to pay for my actions leading up to this, compliance with everything, yet this company “robs from the poor”. It is the worst kind of thievery. Just to be clear when my three months of violations were occurring every four days; I would pay the money to get a violation cleared, and the first blow on the drive back home it would violate me again every single time. Nothing had changed, my headset if that was the problem, should have been changed out after a couple of these Incidences as I asked, not after three months and $400 worth later.

Meanwhile while I went to work a family member took the smart start detachable blowhole back to installer to switch it out. We thought that was it. NOPE. Family member (who drove the 87 mile goose chase to get me to work, get device pick me back up after short shift; and take me back home) was told I gotta bring the truck in for calibration; and PAY for a 30 mile tow if it would not start with blowhole #2. It’s expensive testing to prove how much of an opiate is in your system. So if they wanted to jam me up I figured the year suspension beats an OVI neither impaired me that night. Lorain County Ohio has no public transportation. I HAVE TO DRIVE to get to work. It’s 30 miles and 5 to 32 degrees c. Updated on 06/12/2020: Unfortunately, due to no money for a decent attorney, I decided to ride out the first offenders deal which obligated me to have an IID device in my personal vehicle for one year. I made several calls checking out companies for the best deal. Smart Start (SS here foreward) had a no installation fee and the girl seemed nice enough so I had their IID breathalyzer installed figuring the companies are all the same. Never again did I speak to a customer service rep that was nice like the first. If you choose them and need to call customer service expect to be treated like a drunk and a bum! They will be disrespectful, dismissive, unkind, uncaring and just overall horrible towards you or your concerns.

They are a company that has the opportunity to entice people that have court-ordered obligations and then they feel ok with charging high fees and trust me their online incident forms review is a joke. You will be denied and not nicely. I even received an initial response letter to an unfortunate accidental incident where I dripped only a drop of hand sanitizer into the mouthpiece unknowingly and as a result, blew a violation that cost me $100 within 72 hours and the letter was not signed by the cowardly employee but in it they went on to call me stupid and blame me for my mistake, as if it couldn’t happen to them. They also advised me to not call or appeal their decision as all reps and management are aware of my incident and I will only be disconnected and ignored going forward. The letter was so directly disrespectful and blatantly rude that it felt personal.

These clowns sit in an office and consider everyone guilty and a drunk and treat you the same. They feel they are untouchable and it gives them a god complex to treat us this way. So, should you still choose SS don’t say I didn’t warn you of their horrible attitudes when you make that first call. Also, they have a $100 removal fee when your obligation is up and they will time it so you end up paying for another month of their services even though your obligation is done and the iid is removed.

Be aware as they are horrible and money-hungry feeding off of court-ordered iid drivers. How the CEO can read all of the same reviews on the internet about their horrible customer service that I have read and then continue to allow their despicable behavior is beyond me. They all should be ashamed of themselves at the end of each day for treating other human beings in a manner that only knocks them down more in life. I would choose no stars but that’s not an option unfortunately. The only comforting thing to me is that I truly believe in karma so what comes around goes around and they will one day get a taste of their own attitudes.

Original Review: I was required to have the IID device for a one year period. Searching several suppliers I chose Smart Start because they were pleasant to speak with and seemed the best choice per my budget. I had the IID in my vehicle for 6 months, made every calibration and payment when required, and then I was laid off. The 3 months following my layoff I had trouble making the monthly 83.00 calibration payment. I called Smart Start multiple times requesting payment arrangements or some sort of assistance and this is when they began to speak to me with a dismissive arrogance! They could care less if you can afford their monthly charge or not and won't have any mercy on you regardless of your situation.

I had two instances where when I went in to get the calibration and I was advised I missed a rolling test and that was not true. I was like a hawk watching this device because each incident is an additional $75.00 charge. So, your device has one or two "Unknown" instances per requirement period and they simply deny the appeals, that's up to an additional $150.00 per client they are making without argument per year! You can appeal it a hundred times but who's going to listen to us? In their eyes we are all alcoholics getting what we deserve but in my case it's still pending in court? Fairness is not at all in play here!!! Also, another scam, and I believe they are all scams, is the following:

I have a thought why this is so, or at least this is my theory... Smart Start is greedy and getting very wealthy from those good Americans that have made a mistake and have a court order to place the IID in their vehicle. If Smart Start simply denies their client's, those that chose them over all the others, any help at all, they get rich!

I will use a hypothetical number: If they have 5000 clients and half of those clients (2500) simply can't pay one month out of the required 12 months (one year) installation charge, this simple denial of help will make them on average an additional $207,500 per year! Figuring the average monthly calibration at $83.00 multiplied by 2500 = $207,500. Job security? Fraud? Each missed calibration, at least in my state after the 5th day, gets you another month added to your IID requirement. I now have two months added to mine. Imagine if 2500 clients each had two added months, they would double the above number.

My point in closing, they will all be very courteous and kind when you are choosing the supplier to use but whatever you do, if you have Smart Start at least, don't miss a payment and call in expecting help from them. The above is just a guess on my part but there is no reason they cannot work with those who are in hard times to therefore help keep them remain compliant with the states court orders. They say they are there for their customers, to help you through this requirement but they are full of it, bottom line is they care only about their bottom line at the end of the day. My point: Be cautious, don't miss a payment, know if your state allows a grace period after the appointment date and be prepared not to get help from these companies as I'm sure they are all pretty much the same!

I would like to say first and foremost I take complete responsibility for my mistakes (2 DUIs) and actually appreciate the idea and lesson the automotive breathalyzer provides. It legitimately teaches people how to NOT drive drunk. I will also say I did have a few legitimate violations, one was the morning after drinking and one was from letting my car run after jump starting my car, and missing the prompt to test.

I also want to express genuine appreciation to the garage where the unit was installed and is calibrated. They are a caring mom and pop garage who NEVER treat their interlock (breathalyzer) clients any different than their other customers. They listened if I had a problem, and if they were able to provide a solution, always offered it.

On that note, the initial customer service with Smart Start was excellent, again, never treating me like a criminal or as if I had done anything wrong. That was basically where the courtesy ended. I had one time (as mentioned above) that I received a violation because my battery had died and I was allowing the car to run for a bit to charge it after the jump start. I went inside to go to the bathroom, and missed the prompt. Fine. Went next day to get recalibrated, and the garage owner told me to file an incident report and request a refund, since I didn't violate because of drinking.

I filled it out, emailed it, and although the email confirmation says response in 5-7 days, I had to call after 2 weeks, where I was met with ignorance, and the representative informed me my request had not need reviewed, and to email it again. I did so and received a response of no refund. Ok, so I accept that because I made the mistake of leaving the unit w the car on. HOWEVER, in the recent few weeks the unit has been acting up, (taking an extensive amount of time to analyze, asking for immediate retreats etc). Tonight I had gone to work, driven on break, drove home from work (all with more than one prompt for testing, and passing). I stopped home, picked up laundry, and again started car with no problem (note: not eating, drinking, touching or applying anything).

About 5 min later when I pulled into parking lot of laundromat, requested test again. No problem. Used to it after 7 mos. VIOLATION. For no reason. Requested a retest after 1.5 min, which I thought might clear the violation. Nope, I PASSED and still was left violated with a 4 day time limit to have it calibrated. I started my laundry, started car, again with no issue. Also was prompted to blow again before I got home, also no problem. Called customer service, explained what happened, even offering to go to my local police to be tested and documented that I was sober. Was transferred through 5 or 6 people, telling each the story, each telling me they were unable to help me, but "maybe this department/person could"...

Basically all of the representatives/operators telling me it's "not their problem". Finally after customer service, troubleshooting/service dept, credit/collections, and back to customer service, I was told I would not have a choice but to pay to have it calibrated (even though I made it clear that was financially impossible), and to file an incident report, requesting a solution, or if I paid for calibration, a refund. This company has ABSOLUTELY no fail-safe as to how a client could make a case and prove that it was device error, not a mistake or violation on their part. While we ARE advised in the beginning that certain foods or drinks could show up as a false positive, this has NEVER happened, and I eat and drink MANY different things.

I have, in fact violated due to residual alcohol in my system the day AFTER drinking. Again, I take responsibility for my genuine violations. However, receiving a positive reading when I had done nothing to trigger it, and all the while ALL the other tests this evening I PASSED (except for one at the end of the night, where it requested an immediate retest, which I also passed. I feel like this system/company has no availability for an innocent person, who is TRYING to do the right thing and is paying a RIDICULOUS amount for Smart Start's SERVICE to be able to legitimately plead their case in the event the device malfunctions or tests incorrectly.

Basically the client is stonewalled and told they have no choice but to pay for the extra calibrations (even if they are unable), or they receive more violations, vehicle lockout, or worse, additional punishment from the DOT if they violate too many times before removal. I feel as if we are being scammed, stolen from, and being taken advantage of. And we have absolutely no representation to defend us. I intend to continue to call the company and speak to every representative, every supervisor, every technical support person until the very last minute before I receive a lockout. I admit and take the punishment when I do wrong, but if I am innocent, I will fight tooth and nail to prove myself right.

For somebody who doesn't drink (or consume anything else that sets it off), I sure get a lot of warns and fails. As well as warning messages, random charges...and zero customer service unless you owe them money. Clearly, don't drink and drive. But if you are a person who has already made this mistake and are reading this, my advice to you is this...

You've already adapted for a long period of time without a car...keep acting like you don't have a car for another year. This program will teach you no lessons, it will just be a continuous nightmare in which they profit. Drive the minimum mileage, bring it in on time...get it out and move on. The more you drive, the more problems you'll have...the more it will cost and longer you will have it.

Updated on 01/14/2019: Vehicle was totaled and sent to a salvage yard, Smart Start has no vendor or mobile vendors to remove the device to transfer to other vehicle. Their option was to tow the vehicle to a vendor for removal and tow back to salvage yard. Costing around $800 for a flatbed hoping that the service station could remove it quickly so I wasn't stuck with the $80/day yard storage fee at the salvage yard since you can't sign over the vehicle title until the intoxilyzer is removed! Spoke with what I presumed was a helpful honest lady named Amanda @ ** who told me that all I would be charged for would be the $50 download fee for the disconnect (since the vehicle lost power) and they have free install now.

So I got the device removed and brought the new vehicle with device in hand to the service station and was told after they finished that it is now $200, $150 for vehicle transfer/install and $50 for the violation for the unit losing power. 2 things to keep in mind, 1 the installer did not have to transfer just install (supposed to be free), and I was told the $50 was for the violation lock for loss of power. Not for the download I was explained. After the service station finished they even tried to resolve it and understood exactly where I was coming from since there is no vendors to remove the device and it supposed to be free install and this was clearly not a transfer since it was nothing for him to remove and reconnect. Anyways I then spoke to a lady named Taylor ** who then basically called me a p.o.s. liar and told me that I was told this price.

Well lo and behold I had my phone on speaker with 2 others listening in when all I was told was the $50 download and free install. If I had known ahead of time the device would malfunction I would have Ubered, but it was too late to get a ride.

To begin with if I could vote no stars I would! I highly recommend not going with this company, from the beginning nothing but problems and I didn’t even get the device installed. Was charged for the device that later couldn’t get installed. Tried getting a refund only to be transferred 3 times and put on hold for 30 minutes until I could finally get to talk to someone who could “help” me get my money back. Customer service agents don’t know much about their own product nor do they have viable information whether or not there’s an upcharge for a vehicle even though they ask if it’s push start or key start. DO NOT USE SMART START.

I spoke to two people on the phone insisting I had to pay for a lockout code in the instance of my car being in the repair shop while the due date passed. The lockout fee is 50 dollars. This seems a bit like robbery to me. Customer service reps don’t seem keen on servicing customers in the slightest; very unhelpful. I understand a business is to be run, but this is another level of petty. I wish I had read these reviews before choosing this company to be in control of my vehicle.

These systems are a joke and dangerous and the state legislatures who passed this junk should be booted out of office. Oh I forgot they don't have a clue what's in the legislation they passed.

I never wrote a review in my life ever. This time, I can't just skip it. I live in East Coastal NC, my county just has declared to evacuate immediately due to hurricane cat 5. I have an appointment on Friday which is the day after an expected day (Thursday) of hurricane hits. Her name was Sandra as far as I remember who assisted my call, she told me that they don't know whether they open or not. I asked her that if they close, do you guys send a notification to customers so we can reschedule? She said, "I don't know, do you think I know?"

What on earth people hire that person as a customer service representative. She kept repeating me 'Do you think I know?' more than 3 times. She wanted to argue with me or piss me off on purpose. I asked her that "what do you mean, it's customer service, are you trying to argue with me?" She said, "No, because I don't know." Even though you don't know what the company handles for this hurricane issue, you shouldn't have said, "Do you think I know?" with that looking me down voice tone like you are starving to fight with somebody who seems easy to attack. She was so rude, not helpful at all. I don't have any issue with the product but customer service. Jesus Christ!

Hello I am a client. I have had many issues regarding refunds, false readings and Equipment malfunctions with Smart Start. Just the simple blow and hum is utterly ridiculous and difficult for most of us. It is also unsafe I might add when you have to write on the freeway or make a turn and it continuously beeps because you have your air conditioner on!

However this is not the reason for this review. There's been one bright spot in this whole experience for me and the technician at the 25 Road location Grand Junction Colorado. His demeanor is stellar. He's always patient and I'm sure it's a very difficult position to work in. I always feel better leaving than when I arrived. He should be commended and also get a raise. I've seen aggravated client and I witnessed firsthand his patience and professionalism. I really appreciate it in a world gone crazy with rudeness. He always explains everything calmly and does the best you can to go to the extra mile for me. He's a really good guy.

I've had an Interlock in my car now for two years and have two years to go until removal, and over the time that I have had the device for I have had a lot of false readings that the Interlock is registered. I have found out by experience that if you smoke and I do, that if you don't blow all the smoke out of your lungs before test it can register as high as .006 and of course that's a reading to the judge that you have to go before to ask for your Interlock to be removed! Not only smoke tho as I also found out that the energy drinks V, can register quite higher than .006 if you are drinking one in the car and the device asks for a test, in fact I've had as high as .011 and not just on the odd occasion quite constantly also, so as far to my knowledge no other interlock device has been so sensitive.

There are more foods and drinks that would do the same thing as cigarettes and energy drinks such as cheese and bacon rolls and tomato sauce, so I guess I am not the only one? And when is the company going to do something about this? Hopefully a full class action goes ahead and with all the money that they make they could correct the issue and for once give an honest and true reading of .000.

I completed 2 year IID program. When first installed I needed a new battery because of my IID. I got a few violations the first 6 months then I mastered it. Paid $150 for Cal. every month. If I played my bass in stereo too loud it'd say tamper abort. Otherwise, I really had no issues. I could blow into it successfully very easily, I did it driving like nothing. I went on road trips with it. I would detach it almost every day and put it in a safe spot in my room. Especially if it was really HOT or COLD. I've accidentally left it in both super hot and freezing temps (very dumb) it was VERY slow to load, but no defects at all or false violations.

Remember almost everything is your fault when it comes to damage, violations, lockouts, car accidents! I've heard of devices failing from being left in hot, cold temps or water damage. Don't use mouthwash with alcohol before you even think about blowing or you're dumb. Don't drink at night and then blow in your device the next morning, ever. Don't think "oh it's been long enough". I seriously am a Smart Start master and this was cake for me after awhile. The worst part was avoiding having people in my car. I have a decent car I worked hard for.

I couldn't have friends, co workers, girls, or anyone in my car without being embarrassed and sometimes judged. I have more excuses why I can't give you a ride or use my car to go out than anything. It's over. I will never drink and drive ever again! It's called UBER. I'd rather pay $5k-$10k for an UBER than get another DWI. It ruined my life and finances and mental stability for a while. All the court dates, lawyers, fines/fees, classes, stress lectures, IID, dealing with RMV and the billion other crappy things DWI/DUI brings. I'm done. Bye Smart Start. I will never see you again. I can promise that.

I only needed Smart Start for two months after having QuickStart for ten. QuickStart was even worse but I digress. First of all, the Smart Start unit is outdated and archaic. The thing that says, "Blow Me" looks and feels like it's from 1972. However, I had no trouble using the device other than it required a longer and longer blow time. It was still an easier blow that QuickStart! My biggest issue was being told I would need to buy a prepaid Visa to make a payment. I didn't have my actual ATM card on me but I know the number. So I buy the card and make the payment. They tell me it's declined.

I ask the guy (different person) if I can just give him my real ATM number (not the prepaid), and he says yes. So I make the payment and it goes right through on my actual bank account. Next day, I just happen to check the balance on the prepaid card since they told me it was declined and wouldn't you know, it's missing $75. I call Smart Start and tell them and immediately I'm treated like a convict (which I'm not aside from DUI). They tell me that I need to provide them with a bank statement. I tell them I don't have a statement because it's a brand new prepaid card. They say oh well they can't do anything about it. I hope they all burn.

To cal. dates if it's in the days of that month you should be able to do it when you have many. I have to pawn something in the middle of the month just to pay and cost 50$ more. Government cash cow. Completely dead. I thought it was the first car I had it in, and it was a standard car, I almost ran an old couple over trying to pull over to blow... I had it removed placed in an automatic and had have nothing but issues. The 1/3 was because I forgot about the mouthwash I had used. I have paid 300$ already the first month having it, installed reinstalled, lockouts. I’m contacting the BBB and state. This make me want to give up already. I am so frustrated and I cannot get any of my necessary livelihood things done because the device isn’t working properly EVER.

I had to have this in my car for 6 months on first DUI. I only got stuck with it because I blew very high. I got my DUI on 3/20/2015, now over 3 years later I finally am done with all the DUI stuff. I got a total of 6 violations during the 6 months, only one was actually valid, because I could not repeat a rolling retest after the device fell under the passenger seat. The rolling retest is a horrible thing if you have a manual transmission. To make a long story short I paid an extra $240 for violations that happened at random and never even got any reason why they happened along with the fact they were never reported to the state. Pain in the butt. Will not give me extra monies I paid back.

Had the IID installed 3 months ago. After a while I needed a new battery. Unrelated to the IID. So I had a new one put in. Had to jump thru phone hoops to get a restart code. Then had my monthly real done. A few days later the clip at the unit broke off. Had new cord installed. The device started acting different. Needed longer blow time. Now it is not working at all. The instant I start blowing as directed it immediately alarms and says blow longer. Cannot contact the local tech. They never answer. My car is now sitting disabled in a mall parking lot overnight. Thank God I wasn't out of town since I do travel a lot. Tomorrow should be interesting... Whenever the installer sees fit to respond to my multiple texts... So far, not at all happy with the device or service.

Most people won't take the time to review a good experience, A lot of the negative reviews seem to be from individuals directing anger over their situation towards this company. I was given some flexibility in scheduling appointments for calibration. The unit displays your appointment date as a reminder. If you get a lockout for missing an appointment you shouldn't blame the company. This device allows you drive, satisfy the court/state and ensures you don't continue to drink and drive. This company was great to deal with and the product worked flawlessly. Great customer support. No false positives and no damage to my car.

With any interlock, it is important to have a good battery, good alternator and good battery connections. This device is accurate and alcohol specific. I work with solvents that contain alcohol and having it on my hands and clothes never caused a positive, food and non-alcoholic drink never caused a positive (though they tell you to drink water before use). I only blew positive once and that's because I drank heavily the night before and still had the equivalent of 1.5 drinks in my system. I had one issue where my battery voltage was low and the unit registered a circumvention, I was able to call customer service and get it easily resolved. I was always treated respectfully by every member of their staff. I had this in my car for 9 months.

Wait another month for them to decide if I can have something that is mandatory. At what point? Get treated like dirt through registry, my insurance company that I'm going to cancel then court **. Now I have to deal with Smart Start idiots... it's only been 3 days so far now I need to pay for a new battery clamp they broke and I'm not allowed to disconnect power or pay more. I put the trickle charger on it until Monday then I will drive it in and have their BS removed. Not allowed to fix your own vehicle relay. Not much for options in Canada just Smart Start.

So if you need work done on your vehicle you get to pay a mechanic to sit on hold all day? Seems funny the breathalyzer the cops had worked fine but this cheap junk doesn't. ** them. I'm pulling it out brew my own beer or shine. Had enough of your scams stupid Canadian government. They said even though you don't drink the machine can violate you and lock you out. Not their problem. This has happened every month to me. Blow in. Machine trucks starts, blew in machine few minutes later. Truck violate wait for countdown. 2 mins truck starts. Drive it for rest of day. Went to Start truck week later lock out. HMMMM. How can it pass you two mins later fail you 2 mins later pass you. Then locks you out. It's a way for them to get free money. This machine is to cost 100 per month. It's costing me 250 per month.
