All they do is lie about the price. $120 install? Yea right! It was $200. $44 bi-weekly is what I was told. The bill is $162 for the last 2 weeks. Bogus service fees. I wish there was a 0 star option. Nothing good to say about any of it.

If I could put 0 stars I would!!! I am being charged for 28 days of service when it's supposed to be 30! They said at shop it was due to short months, only have 1 short month in a year!!! I have repeatedly asked for a copy of the orders for device install since Oct 2024 and still NO RESPONSE!!! This is the absolute worst service out there!!! See less

Worst company I have ever dealt with. They lie and they do not do what they say they will do. I have done what I am supposed to do. If you call them you will never get anyone that you can understand or hold an intelligent conversation with. If you ask to talk to management or a supervisor they only tell you they are busy talking to other people and they will call you back in a day or two.

I am extremely disappointed with Smart Start and the way this situation has been handled. My son had a Smart Start ignition interlock device installed through one of their authorized service locations, Carphonics. Within about 15 minutes of leaving the shop, he blew into the device and passed, but the vehicle would not start. He was stranded about an hour away from home and needed help immediately.
Instead of making sure the installation was properly reviewed and corrected, we were pushed back and forth. Smart Start customer service has refused to let me speak with a manager, even though this involves an important MTO/court-related device. I also want to be clear that I am legally allowed to speak with Smart Start about this matter because my son has given me permission to speak on his behalf, and I am also the owner of the vehicle involved. I have had to reach out to multiple people and organizations for help because this has not been handled properly, including Smart Start, Carphonics, the BBB, the Ministry/MTO, my MPP Lisa Thompson, the police, the Ontario Ombudsman, the Back on Track program, and Premier Doug Ford’s office.
This situation has caused stress, wasted time, and extra expense. We have also dealt with rude behaviour, threats, and abusive comments connected to this matter, some of which were later deleted. I have screenshots and video evidence related to what happened. Smart Start needs to take responsibility for the businesses they authorize to install their devices. Customers should not be left stranded, blamed, ignored, or refused access to a manager when there is a serious problem immediately after installation. I want Smart Start to properly review this matter, explain why this was allowed to happen, address the conduct of the service location, and resolve this issue properly.

My experience with Smart Start was extremely disappointing. I found the company’s pricing and fee structure to be unclear, with additional charges appearing that were not fully disclosed upfront. The overall cost ended up being significantly higher than expected. Customer service was also frustrating to deal with. Communication regarding billing, service requirements, and account issues lacked transparency and consistency. I felt that important information should have been explained more clearly before services were started. Based on my experience, I would encourage potential customers to carefully review all terms, fees, and service agreements before committing. I believe the company needs to improve its transparency, customer support, and business practices to better serve its customers.

We have had numerous issues with this company over many years. We have issues with their equipment malfunctioning and end up having to pay either lockout fees or trouble shooting fees-most of the time both. You call to discuss and they tell you file a complaint/claim/incident report online. You fill it out and submit all documents and it says they will be back within 7-10 days. You don't hear back from them so you call again and they tell you to fill out another form but the person you are talking to can't help. You ask for a manager to see if we can discuss further and they either say no one is available or I've even been put on hold until it actually hangs up on me because I sat so long waiting.
I've left multiple voice mails and emailed multiple times. I've got delivery receipts and read receipts for the emails since I get no response. A couple times they have deleted my messages without even reading it. If I do get a response, it is only by email and says to contact their number and we repeat the same cycle over and over. I have been fighting with them this last time since August 2025 on 1 issue that they still won't resolve. Since August, we have had 4 or 5 more issues regarding lockouts, mouth pieces, and credit holds with no resolution or call back.

I have to agree with so many people in here that they suck. Costing me over $500 a month when it should only be 130.. and then their machines malfunction all the time and then they blame us for it being our mistake. I had to change everything that I ate, drank and take.. I carry a backtrack breathalyzer in my truck and have one in the house that I blow into all the time.. and when I do get a violation after five minutes of blowing in and it approving me saying that I pass it’ll violate me saying that it gave a positive sample.
I take video recordings every time showing that I’m blowing into my breathalyzer and it’s all zeros. I have UA test all the time for treatment. I have been sober.. in April. I was on my way to the gym at five in the morning only had water to drink. It passed me when I started the truck and five minutes later when I got to the gym, I had to blow in and it violated me five times before it gave me a pass.. Their equipment sucks. They know that they are screwing people over and I think that their computer systems purposely violate people.. I am gonna work with My attorney to sue them.
I have video recordings of every situation that I’ve had with them and yes, one was my fault because I was jumping somebody else’s car and helping them out on the side of the road and I missed a blow sample because the machine did not alert me. It did not beep and give me indication that it needed a sample.. and still with recordings and proving that their machine is malfunctioning they still say it’s operator error. I do not recommend these people, and I am in the process of changing over to another company..
These people are pirates and ruin peoples lives. And the only reason why I have this device in my truck is because I was prescribed medications. That caused me to have serious mental health issues that I don’t even remember the things that I did.. So now I’m stuck with it because of something that I not purposely do. I hate alcohol. I hate drugs. I hate all that stuff. I love living a sober life and because of a doctor prescribing me a medication to help me sleep. I am now reaping this horrible experience.. Smart Start are pirates and I pray to God that they get what they deserve. The other thing is their system will not allow me to upload the videos to prove myself innocent.. Smart Start is corrupt.

WORST COMPANY!! Appointment changed 3 times due to no part or camera at installation Center. Then had to leave at installation center cause it is hybrid and mechanic told me himself he has never installed one on hybrid. The next week when went in to pick up vehicle, we were not trained like shown on video. The person who came out to train us insisted that only the violator had to breathe in device so they did not train my driver, nor did they have us sign paperwork that we were both trained properly, which is a requirement in Pennsylvania (I found this out afterwards). Then we start down the road, and I watched it go from Violock 05DAY to Violock04day.
I wasn't exactly sure what that meant and I immediately called the service installation center and their response was they did not know. So we get vehicle home only to find out it is going to lock out in 4 days. Why was it in Violock05day when we picked up vehicle- that had to have happened at service center prior to us picking it up. My vehicle is now sitting outside service center and will continue to sit there until the state restores my driver's license and I can drive vehicle. In the meantime, it is now going on almost six months since I have been waiting for my license, while SMART START is getting money every month. Totally terrible company and no accountability. Do not get DUI or refuse to be tested in PA and do not go with SMART START if you need an interlock or anything.

So I had the Smart start installed, I was quoted $60 every two weeks, I been paying $96, this month alone I had two malfunctions and I ended having to pay $186 for their equipment malfunction. I would not be telling people to go to smart start for the ignition interlock, find another company to sign up with and the customer service is another big issue.

The whole company is scam. The garage where got installed are on drugs or drunk. They take money and schedule me for service twice a month and have 90 day payment schedule from 90 days ago and refuse to send any of my documents. So I would give them no stars. Don't even want to leave this but have to and they are closed when I'm scheduled so now they will charge more money.

The handset I got 2 months was faulty. It would constantly tell me I wasn't humming hard enough, or it would just randomly go into Initializing mode and reset itself when I was trying to give a sample. I got stuck multiple times after work because I couldn't start my car and had to call a $40 Uber to get home then have my wife drive me back to work the next morning. It frequently took 10-15 minutes and 10-15 tries to get the thing to accept an initial startup test.
About 2 weeks ago I got a missed test violation on a rolling test because I was humming and blowing, humming and blowing and the device either told me to hum stronger or just kept restarting while I was trying to give the test. I finally took it back to the test center. *They confirmed that the device was faulty* and gave me a new one. The older one was bigger, had the round blow tube on the top. The new one is smaller, has the blow part on the front and the blow part is more "mouth shaped". The new seems to be working much much better in the 2 weeks I've had it.
Anyway, for the missed test violation on the old device, which was totally not my fault, Smart Start wants to charge me over $200. The installer says I need to call them to ask that they don't, but of course you can't actually get anyone on the phone; all you get is a series of automated prompts, none of which gets you through to *talk to an actual person*. All the while their own automated system keeps calling me once a day to tell me that I need to call them! It's very frustrating.

It's never a supervisor available. They installed this device in August 2025 and to this day May 7th they have not sent the form to MVA that this device has been installed. But yet monthly take our money for this installation. This is the worst company ever. DO NOT use them ever. They need to be out of business.

I have to honestly say that Smart Start has been one of the most difficult companies I’ve ever dealt with. Trying to reach the correct person for assistance feels nearly impossible, and unfortunately the customer service experience across multiple departments has been consistently unhelpful and rude. I understand these situations can be stressful for customers already, which is why professionalism and communication matter so much. Instead, I’ve repeatedly felt dismissed and bounced around without real resolution.
Smart Start no longer has the monopoly it once did. People have options now, and based on my experience, I would not recommend your company to anyone. In fact, many people I know who currently use or previously used Smart Start feel the same way. I truly hope the company takes customer service concerns more seriously moving forward, because the way customers are treated during an already difficult process leaves a lasting impression.

I had an extremely frustrating experience with Smart Start. This company charges multiple fees that feel completely unjustified, especially for customers who are fully compliant and following all requirements. The biggest issue is the excessive delay in processing compliance paperwork. I’ve been waiting over two weeks just to get a compliance form completed so I can have the device removed. In that time, I’ve had to go to the DMV twice, only to be turned away because Smart Start failed to provide the proper documentation. Other companies in this industry do not take nearly this long, which raises serious concerns about their processes.
On top of that, their customer service is unacceptable. Calls go unanswered, callbacks take hours (if they happen at all), and representatives often seem untrained or unable to resolve even basic issues. I’ve been hung up on and repeatedly denied access to a supervisor, which is extremely unprofessional. They are not saving money by outsourcing with these foreigner who can not comprehend. Overall, this experience has cost me unnecessary time, money, and stress. I would strongly advise anyone considering Smart Start to look into alternative providers that are more transparent, responsive, and efficient.

My experience with this company has been horrible. I would never recommend this company to anyone. I had the NC DMV operator in my vehicle with me and she saw how they ruined my car because it would not start even after passing the test. She agreed that that had indeed ruined my car and also stated she definitely would never recommend this company to anyone in the future. They blew a fuse on my headlight while installing the machine. I've had to replace my battery and alternator because of improper wiring. Unfortunately I didn't see the BBB reviews and Consumer Affairs until it was too late. It clearly states that Smart Start is known for battery drainage and it's so true. I had been driving around for over two hours blowing in this machine every 45 minutes and then suddenly I get a violation but exactly 32 seconds later it beeped again and I passed.
I know I passed because it had no reason to violate me other than to charge for false violations which is also reported in the Better Business Bureau. They are trying to charge me for false violations and I'm not going to pay them because if I was drinking it definitely would not have passed me exactly 32 seconds later and the other 2 hours I had been driving around. This company should be shut down by the DMV. The DMV or the State are the ones who require this machine so I cannot understand how they are still allowed to stay in business. I had a DUI in 2008 and blew a 0. I'm not a drinker and I'm sure everyone says that but please feel free to look at my record. My license expired so I had to have this machine installed for 103 days because I never finished out my time with it from the 2008 DUI and they are charging me fees I wasn't supposed to be charged along with all these violation fees.
If I had alcohol in my system it would not have passed me 32 seconds after a violation. Then tell me I can pay $150 for a lockout code that last 6 hours because I'm on vacation in the mountains and that if I don't get my car to them before Monday I'll be completely locked out. Im going to have to leave my family in the mountains so I can get my car back to them before Monday for a false violation. It's totally messed up and I have cried all night long because I did nothing wrong. They aren't going to pay me for a new battery, an alternator and for the fuse they blew. I'm going to sue them for these charges, as well as, an incident that happened at the office the last time I was there years ago which is why I never went back. I would also say do not get in the vehicle with them. This is the worst thing I've ever been through with any company.
Customer service: what customer service? Good luck with getting an actual person on the phone. The only way is for installation and of course they'll jump on that so they can falsely violate you only to ruin your vehicle and then charge you so much money that you'll never get out of debt with them. They also refuse to take the machine out until you pay them all these false violations and other fees they falsely accuse you of. I would beg you to read the reviews I previously mentioned before using this company. I'm going to sue them for messing up my vehicle and a previous incident that happened to me when I went to get the machine calibrated.

It is the worse service I have ever experienced in my 54 years of life. This company is a perfect example of why our system is broken. They prey on people who have no choice but to use their product, as they falsify test results in order to charge you lockout and service fees every 2 weeks. They steal your money, they never pick up the phone, they overcharge and lie about free installation and a free month of your equipment lease. They have no oversight committee and no one to answer to, so they rob and steal every chance they get, and I have absolute proof of their bullshit.
I have my printout of my tests. 9:32 pm, my BAC was 0.0 at 9:38, they claim it was at .032 and violated me, costing another 140 bucks, and 3 minutes later at 9:41 my BAC was again at 0.0. Did I get a refund... No. Did they credit my account? No. Because this is what happens every 2 weeks like clockwork. They are thieves, and our corrupt justice system lets them rob us, most likely for a kickback. I'm going to rip the thing out of my vehicle and be done with it. I can't afford an additional 140 bucks every 2 weeks on top of the 120 a month they charge to lease their rigged equipment. They should all go to jail.

Have been on the phone for over 4 hours yesterday and today and find it is impossible to get anyone on the phone that can help me. I do not recommend anyone get this installed. Customer service is a joke. Talking to a live person takes forever. It's a big $$ grab. I paid my fees every month like I was suppose to. Auto pay never worked, so I always had to go into the app and pay myself. It's set up a month ahead. Every time I would go in to get a calibration done they would say I was behind on my payment. I knew I wasn't. I had my bank statements for every month I paid. When it was time to get it removed the shop said I was behind 2 months. I had to pay so I could get it removed.
Called Smart Start, after being on hold for over an hour and talking to 3 different people the lady informed me I indeed did over pay 3 months and am entitled to a refund of $297.13. She sends me a link of how I have to go about getting such refund. You have to fill out paperwork, wait for approval, if approved they will send you a paper check in the mail and it takes up to 90 days. It took them 2 seconds to take $$ from them that I didn't owe, but this long to get it back.

Like another review I read, I have never written a review about anyone or any company but Smart Start is truly the worst experience I have ever had. I don't even know where to start. They keep your credit card on file so they can charge you at will. They set dates for your service and if you miss one they will still charge you and will also charge you a penalty.
When the equipment was removed from the car they charged a $145.00 fee labeled "Unpaid Balance." How is that possible when they charge your credit card up front for everything. They charged my credit card for the two week lease charge the day before the equipment was to be removed even though the appointment for removal was made two days prior. I submitted for a refund 45 days ago, and have made 3 attempts to collect and they haven't responded once. So many other issues, I'm going to turn this over my attorney and I don't care how much it cost me, I'm going after Smart Start.
