Got a violation. I've had the device for 39 days... Never tampered with the device and haven't had a drink in 18 months. The install was 375 when quoted 250$. The only people who calibrate in my area only except cash. Sketchy... Can't get support by phone... Horrible experience so far and I don't drink anymore. 3 different dealer say Smart Start doesn't pay them for their service either.

Absolute worst customer service. They’re intentionally rude and condescending. Keep calling me from their collections department for bills they admit are not yet due. However because they’re bill in advance it shows in my account, still it is not due but I get the calls daily. My calibration is due prior to auto pay so every time I get the device calibrated it voids the auto pay. The device randomly puts you in lockout without a description of the violation so you need to spend $90 to unlock it without knowing why.

I rated this company with two stars, and the only reason there are two stars is that the people I have talked to are very nice. The company's policies are outrageous. I was very sick, and my calibration date was while I was unable to blow into my device, and when I was able to go get it done, they were closed due to the holiday. I have to pay over $150 just for fees to get it working again. Their policies are very strict, and don't give any room for life emergencies. If I were to do it over again, I would not choose this company.

All of these reviews are accurate. This company does the bare minimum to comply with state standards, and makes it extremely difficult for people to comply with court requirements for calibrations. I can only imagine what people who have difficulty affording the monthly calibrations to begin with, and then are not educated or know how to research to report these difficulties to the people that oversee their compliance as a state service provider.

6 months after my install they shut down all their own funded service shops within the Knoxville area and started subcontracting the interlock servicing to other local businesses without even advising you of this change. It left me scrambling on my due date to find someone who would service the device so that 1) their system wouldn’t automatically charge me a “missed calibration appt fee” of $50, and more importantly putting my device into lockout and not being able to drive my car.

When I finally figured out on my service date who Smart Start advised was my new service provider, I went there and they advised that the state of TN did not come to approve them as a service provider. By this time I had to take the entire day off of work due to this wild goose chase. The last servicer I found in the Knoxville area was nice enough to service my device but told me that would be their last day working as a Smart Start service provider because they did not like working with them.

By the next month the next closest service provider was over an hour’s drive from Knoxville. That provider was consistent for the next 3 months and then when I was scheduled to see them again the next month, I drove the 1 hour away only to find out that the location had been shut down, with know advisement or notification from Smart Start. I then found out a servicer opened up 15 min from my house and I started going to them but they were incompetent and a joke. They have a 15 year old with this as his first job and no common sense or customer service experience servicing the devices.

Calibrations are easy and can’t really be messed up but at the end of August I had to get a new vehicle as I surrendered the other one that the device was originally installed on back to the lender. Both cars have to be present and the transfer has to be done from one to the other the same day. Smart start charges you a fee of $150 and then there is a separate charge paid to the service installer of about $150. This kid put the camera up on the opposite side of where he removed it from so now it obstructed my vision; however, instead of removing the adhesive when he removed the camera, he not only reused it but applied a tiny strip of electrical tape and stuck in on the window vehicle, without even cleaning the window first. Camera fell of the first day, so now I have to hold the camera with my left hand while I’m using ,my right to blow into the device.

When I brought this to their attention at my next calibration they told me “its hard to get them to stick when its so hot outside”. Never once fell off in the last vehicle. Then, when I drive the interlock would completely shut off an not work, or tell me to keep blowing to start the car even thought the car was already started, which defeated the purpose and mad the device not in compliance with TN standards. THEN I completed my time requirements and followed the directions on Smart start website for removal. They sent compliance request to the State and the state returned letter to them that I was in compliance and no longer was required to have the device installed in my vehicle.

I took both the compliance letters to the service provider to have my device removed and they refused to remove it stating I needed another calibration even thought the letter from the state stated that the final calibration sent to them by Smart start was approved. I have now followed the proper channels and documentation for immediate reimbursement of this calibration charge as well as the transfer fee paid to transfer the device applied to my account. Or I WILL report this non- compliance to the state (with video and paper evidence) and I will file a civil suit for the return of my money.

For serious complaints with smart start, call your state homeland security decision, interlock ignition program department. Document, document, document. It is the only way they will ever be held accountable for taking advantage of those who are already vulnerable and feel like there is nothing they can do to fix the problems caused by their unprofessionalism and lack of providing services that are easily obtained by those in their program; which they are REQUIRED to do. Good luck but do not use this company whose customer service is subbed to India.

Smart Start has no problem lying to your face, stealing your money, and cheating. Smart Start is a complete scam and their business model is ILLEGAL. Expect a horrible customer service experience (the worst, most worthless people you could imagine). What kind of a person knowingly works for and supports a criminal company? There will be extra fees and double charges and no one to fix them. Also, be prepared for your car to be damaged in one way or another, either from their device or their technicians.

It's companies like Smart Start that make me lose all faith in the American justice system and America as a whole. It's because we are in the land of screwing each other over, not the land of the "free" (LOL), that this company exists at all. If you get a DUI in America, best thing is probably to find a job in another state and move. You'll probably just want to leave America all together eventually. In conclusion, I wouldn't recommend Smart Start to my worst enemy. Jedem das Seine.

Worst customer service I’ve ever seen. Can’t believe this company is legal for months. I’ve tried to tell them to get this device removed, and that I don’t have the means to pay for it, and they have done nothing but accrue the money and not help me to the point where I owe them more than what my car is worth. I’m looking into legal action as I feel like I’m not the only one and won’t be the last one to get scammed by these people.

This is ridiculous. Just because someone got a DUI does not give you the right to basically say you own them forever. They’ve got me to the point where I’ve told them they can come get my car. They won’t even do that. The contract will still keep going, even though their device is fine and in working condition. Let me reiterate that this is the biggest scam I’ve ever been a part of. Undisclosed fees that I did not know about before a contract that was signed over a phone call within five minutes is crazy, and to not even try to help someone is crazier. How do you guys sleep at night?

I have received two violations, one for two in tobacco and another one for a honey bun and a Powerade and I was told that after you brush your teeth in the morning or eat anything, you need to have a simple water before you blow. So what it is is the machine is not looking for alcohol. It's trying to find a certain smell. I don't see how this is legal. I am going to ask a lawyer. I am willing to pay for the installation of the new device because this one is a piece of junk in the company's customer service is pretty much non-existent.

You will wait forever to talk to representative. Best bet is to lie and say you want to install and then tell them you wanted customer service. Requested 180 day compliance report for state DOL and when I went in for final download they made me pay for two more months fees that I did not need. Each representative told me something different when it came time for removal. Then they told me I had to pay a $70 administrative removal fee. Which stupid me I paid, and they still would not sent the compliance report to the state DOL needed.

After three weeks of constant calling and emailing they finally sent the report. Then they want you to pay $140 for removal when it takes the service center 15 Minutes at the most to remove. My attorney doesn't even cost $560 an hour. The removal can be done by anyone that remotely has any experience at car electronics. The only positive thing I can say is I did not have any of the failure issues other people seemed to experience. They used to allow a five day grace period for re-calibration not any more. Pay more money one hour past calibration and don't allow your system to go into lock out. If you do you have to pay to have car towed into service center. Awful customer service. You have to submit an install request on their website to get someone on the phone. They send an email to you stating to reply to "info@smartstart" yet the response you get is "this inbox isn't checked". Since August of 2023:

    - The DMV sent a letter to me that they had not received the calibration from Smartstart and my license would be suspended; after I had been going to my scheduled appointments. I had to pay a $20 fee to smartstart for an "early calibration", again after I did my part.
    - I've been charged $20 for early calibrations multiple times when in fact, they're not early calibrations - the DMV isn't receiving the information I paid Smartstart to send them. So I'm paying $110 for my "monthly service" on top of other random charges.
    - Then I was driving on the freeway, the device shut off completely while I'm driving, I pulled over and was able to get it started. Who knows, maybe my battery will shut off next time this happens??
    - A few weeks later, I go to start my car and it says "violation lockout". I was charged $110 to have the "violation" taken care of. I still have no answers to what the violation was, I've been sober the entire time I've had this device.
    - I made my monthly payment and I'm receiving text messages my account is overdue. I called to get this situated and the guy in collections spoke over me the entire time.
    - Randomly charge for a $50 missed appointment fees
    - Charge $20 early appointment calibration fees

    - Charge $75 violation fee when there is no violation (they make you confirm with the DMV)

This company will take as much money as they can and provide no answers, no help and cause unnecessary headaches with the DMV. I will be filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Where to begin? I installed their device in my vehicle in 2020. No problem with the device itself. Customer service is a ghost after they get you signed up. They answer the phone quickly for new installations. Once you have the device installed, you can easily be on the phone more than an hour to talk to anyone for anything.

Next, pay attention to the contract. If your device gets lost, or stolen, or in my case, repossessed with my truck, they keep charging you monthly for a device you don't have. I had to pay 2100 and change for the device and 2 months of calibrations they didn't perform. Not to mention they went up on fees a couple of times last year. So I decided with my new truck I would go with another company. After that my county signed a contract with SmartStart and forced me to go back.

Here's the kicker! I scheduled my new install, no problem. I go and have my current device removed and had Smart Start install same day. Scheduled 1 month in advance btw. I get the install done and the tech comes to me and says Smart Start wont let him do the system update on my account due to a credit hold on my account. I just paid $2158 dollars last month to clear that up because of my truck being repo'd. No, this was for the device that got repo'd back in 2019 when I signed my plea. They waited until the install was complete and irremovable without a judge's signature to tell me I had a credit hold. Then they spouted off It would be 1800 for device + 74 months of calibrations bringing my total to $7400 something but if I made a lump sum payment she could drop 38 months of calibration fees. Bringing my balance down to $4900 something. Just ROBBERY.

I don't mind paying them for the equipment I lost, but monthly calibrations they never performed is just rude. It's taking advantage of people. I complained a bit and she finally "spoke to a manager" after giving me an attitude. She came back on and said the lowest they'll go is $3000. So they still got me for 1200 more than they deserved. Do with the info what you will. They are in cahoots with the counties that control your punishment. You are just a cash cow, not a customer, at Smart Start. They don't care about you. I just got laid off from a job I was at 9 years. I explained that. Still would not drop the unnecessary calibration fees.

I went in for a calibration on my IID at a different location because of my work schedule. When I got home, I noticed that my next appointment was 1-2 weeks earlier than normal. I called SmartStart to find out why and it turned combative. They couldn’t give me an answer, except, "It’s 30 days to your next appointment." So I called again a few days later, different person, they got defensive too. I just wanted an explanation why the date was so much shorter than before. I asked to speak to a supervisor and they told me since I asked for a supervisor they can end the call…click.

Well I called the company I normally have do my calibration and they said the reason it’s different is because they are open 6 days a week and the company I use is only open 5 days a week. Now it made sense. That’s the difference I was wondering about. That’s why it changed my date back. If SmartStart is going to hire people to do a job they should at least have half of a brain.

I'll keep this brief, I'm not one to give horrible reviews, but my experience was absolutely awful. And this will be my second, same company, different site. Maybe it's better in other states, but in Denver, Colorado, it was very hard to get info on shops open and available. I did find a guy who was reliable and there full time, but his information provided on the app was a shop he leased out of...and I got yelled at whenever I asked them to pass a message on... And other shops they sent me an auto text from weren't even associated with Smart Start, including LA insurance lol, they acted like I was crazy when I called....

Whenever I talked to a real person, none of them could do anything. Some told me to call the same # again, choosing a different menu option, and when I would, it would just tell me to visit the website...which doesn't work!!! I already wrote a review on their Trustpilot site, but I keep seeing reviews come in that I honestly don't believe are accurate. I believe they'll go above and beyond to get you signed up, but will not help you with anything maintenance related.

Also, I've had DUIs in the past and believed this was just my punishment, but I haven't been required to have one for 2 years, I was just hoping to never get one again so this was VOLUNTARY...which worked, but I've literally spent thousands of dollars, got maintenance fees in addition to any work my car needs ($87) from any good mechanic who doesn't wanna deal with Smart Start) but there were 2 occasions I had my car worked on by good guys (they weren't the most up to speed on technology, but I was in lockout mode picking up my car). Totally feel like a psycho writing this review, but I still find it crazy! I had it removed today, only because my competent, most recent service guy dissuaded me from waiting the 3-5 business days to review my request. I could go on and list more...but those were the main issues. If this might help anyone, ESPECIALLY if you're voluntary, I would feel better....If not voluntary, 2 yrs ago, Intoxalock was so much better.

I called to find out about something I seen in my Smart Start client portal app, which lead into a couple more questions that came about from inquiring about my first original question. A very long story later, basically they never answered any of my questions, passed me back and forth on the phone transferring me from department to department back to a different department and finally back to the customer care (keep in mind, I spoke with 14 different people throughout 5 departments and had to explain my entire situation everytime I was transferred) all this in the course of almost 2 hours and that doesn't include the 30 minutes I spoke to them the day before.

Which brings me to my next issue, the first day I spoke to these people, I was told my a guy who supposedly spoke with his supervisor and basically told me that he had to send a email to someone in the Denver corporate office or whatever and told me that the issue would be fixed by the end of the day so that I wouldn't have to worry about being locked out the following day at 5pm. Well as you can guess, that never happened.

In fact, everything that was told to me the first day was basically considered incorrect information and that instead of having a credit in my account, I actually in fact owe money. Not sure how this is considering the first day I was told that my state assisted funding was applied to my account that day and this is the reason why I called in the first place because my client portal app showed a $91 payment made so I was confused as to why my bank account was still trying to be charged for my 2 week lease fee.

At the end of everything, I was told to contact the Denver corporate office in Lakewood (they actually texted me their information for that office) and I was to speak with them about my account and I wouldn't need to explain everything because they were putting it all in my notes attached to my file. Just to find out after that, it was already to late in the day to talk to anyone but left a message and explained to them the urgency of my issue and I have heard nothing back! They also put a lockout on my client portal app because of a balance due on my account. (That's where or how we are supposed to be able to make a payment on our account) Hard to do that when I can't access anything on my client portal app!

This place is a joke! I can't believe that between the 14 people that I was transferred back and forth to and in all the different departments, not 1 PERSON could tell me what was going on with my account and I was given probably half a dozen different "answers" and just passed off to the next person. Ridiculous! Absolutely so unprofessional and just outright rude and disrespectful every representative I spoke to and I was staying calm as I could despite all the crap I went through! All this company does is keep taking money for one's mistake that has already been paid for. I use to brag about how awesome you guys were but within the last year your company isn’t worth even telling about. All you do is make up charges and double charge. Then when asked why about the charges you want to lock the account or transfer to different departments. Oh and not mention the time it takes for the device to be ready to blow in, if I was ever in situation that someone was trying to kill me they would succeed. The device takes at least a minute before you can start the car. Anyways do better Smart Start because using your company wasn’t a smart start.

She gave up and said she did whatever she could, and I need to tow it to their service location and troubleshoot it there.

I was stuck in a parking lot for 4 hours and eventually had to tow it to my house because it was after 6pm and shop was closed on Friday afternoon. I was without my car for the whole weekend. I'll tow it again on Monday to the shop and go from there. Shame on Smart Start Cooperation and they should close their faulty shop and seek for something else to do. But you can never get through the automated phone loops to get service and offer get hung up on. Nor will you get a human to answer your questions. I’ve had nothing but issues and it’s been less than almost 2 weeks. Today From the start of the conversation, the Supervisor Stephen ** at Harrison township location in michigan questioned if I was recording him and I didn’t understand why he came on me with such accusations when I had my device in my hand as a normal person does. I encountered his disposition on the phone prior. He refused to give me the owner's name and his last name to make a complaint because I wanted to speak to someone at a higher level because he couldn’t handle nor was open to listening. He became defensive and dismissive from jump.

I am pregnant, had issues using the device initially, tried explaining to him. I took the vehicle to the location in Clinton township and the tech had only installed but three devices prior like this one and I had trouble blowing because my stomach was cramping and I let them know this, yet they told me I had to take my car although I let them know I wasn’t confident in using this device and I’m pregnant. They then told me that they don’t have a different one on hand and would have to get it from the Harrison township location so I had to take me car.

As suspected, I tried to do the roll blow test. Couldn’t pass because I had issues blowing and I let them know so I got locked me out because I had problems initially using it upon install. I took the situation to the Corp, office didn’t help at all. I have requested the owner's information in Harrison Township Michigan and have been denied to be provided this information since the supervisor is very rude, doesn’t listen and conducted himself in a very unprofessional manner to the point another customer got involved and defended me because I’m pregnant. He was talking down to me and being condescending and disrespectful. He didn’t listen to anything I said, yet became defensive I want to see if whoever’s owns this place is aware and if this such behavior is allowed because my next step is to contact Secretary of State, then State of Michigan.

His conduct is was unacceptable and appalling he had obviously gotten away with it. I also have a witness and the name who is a client there as well. Taylor came to the rescue to deescalate the situation because the way he was treating me not only upset me and I’m carrying a child but the customer he is he’s slammed the window in our faces. Just very unpleasant and uncalled for but he brought this on by being degrading and humiliating me. I won’t let this go until I’m to the top. I appreciate Taylor for helping but this seems to be something that’s not out of the ordinary and this isn’t acceptable business practices where your employees have to handle your situations because the supervisor doesn’t know how to conduct himself. What type of example is that setting for the employees? Now I understand why I have problems from the start. Starts with your leader.

This is without a doubt the worst customer experience I’ve had in my life. I understand that nobody would be happy about having a breathalyzer in their car but SmartStart Canada makes the process even more difficult. The first issue was trying to claim a fee after receiving a charge on their faulty system. While I was driving, my device had not been working properly (faulty cord causing it to be turned off) and I received a rolling violation, meaning I didn’t blow into it when I received a random test. This resulted in a charge for $80. I asked the mechanic why the charge, and explained what my device was doing (he fixed it) and if he could take the charge off. He said I would have to make a claim to smartstart and there’s nothing he could do. You can probably guess that I called them, they said I have to go to the claim form, I filled that out, never got reimbursed or contacted. I decided the $80 wasn’t worth wasting my time.

The second grievance I had was after missing an appointment for calibration. I wasn’t able to make it because I had my license suspended for a couple days (whole other story with stroh healthcare) and had no way to get it there. I called seeking an unlock code and if they could remove the fee because of the situation (I couldn’t physically drive the car to the shop as that’s illegal). Instead of politely telling me that they’re unable to, the customer service assistant just got defensive and said ‘it’s not our fault that your license is suspended’ (I’m paraphrasing). I said I know that, I’m just asking if there’s anything that can be done because me missing the appointment was not on purpose and I had no source to get my car there. The lady basically just kept repeating herself saying I should have gotten family or friends to take it and it’s not their problem. Costed me 120 I believe.

The last issue was today. My car broke down and I sent it to the shop yesterday (towed it). I called smartstart to obtain the information so the mechanic could get into my car. The lady explained that the mechanic has to call from their line and go through the menu entering 1-1-4. I instantly got worried because I don’t want to pay for mechanics calling smartstart, assuming they can even figure out how to proceed on this terrible menu system. I asked, “what is the difference if I just proceeded through the menu and got the code for them than if they did it?”. The lady responded “because those are the rules and you are not allowed to break the rules.” I said “I am not trying to break the rules, I am asking what the difference is between me calling and them calling” (I was seeing why they are allowed to call and if mechanics are somehow verified to obtain the code, because surely smart start does not verify every single mechanic in Canada).

I also wanted to see if it can just be easily bypassed because it sounds like it just extends the process of going to a mechanic. Anyways, the lady responded “you are not allowed to call”, I asked again “what is the difference” and she completely ignored me and says “sorry is there anything else I can help you with today”. Where the heck to these people get off?? Completely like gas lighting and using logical fallacies to avoid an answer. Sorry for such a long review.

I’ve tried multiple times to contact someone and I either get left on hold for HOURS at a time or they hang up on me! If you need an ignition interlock on your vehicle DO NOT use smart start! I was on the phone for hours a day. I have it towed to the shop. The mechanic calls me, tells me I have to go on the app and download a picture. I could not figure it out. I call Smart Start. They tell me mechanic should have downloaded the picture. So Smart Start and I are trying to call the mechanic. No answer, no message. Set up finally 5 hours later. He admitted he was wrong. Stay away from SmartStart and go with any other business. I told them specifically several times what kind of vehicle I have and they repeatedly told me their system is compatible with my vehicle. It is definitely not compatible. My vehicle has shut off 3 times in the last 1.5 years of having this installed. I'd had to wait for the machine to reboot itself while stuck at a red light -- cars honking, going around me, flipping me off. The third time being this past February while in stand still traffic on I-4. It seems to be when my car rolls over into gas saving mode when stopped and a test comes in. But "it's 100% compatible" Very dangerous on highways!!!

Not as of a big of a deal as prior but my car is push to start and it gets hot as hell fighting to get my car started for 15-20 minutes in the Florida heat. They have also recently implemented an additional $25 monthly shop fee, however the shop can charge however much they want at their discretion. I just spent $50 and was just told on the phone by customer service at SmartStart that this is okay and they have no control over it even though they were the ones who started it. So be prepared for $100 shop fees for a 5 minute calibration.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. SMARTSTART is the absolute WORST company when it comes to customer service and even being able to talk to someone on the phone. I submitted 3 separate trouble tickets and did not hear back for over three weeks. Four times of trying to call them, I spent 90 minutes waiting one time, 50 minutes waiting another and then the other 2 times I couldn't talk to anyone and after all that waiting they told me they cannot send a tech to Rocky Ford to REMOVE the device from my broken down car. So their FIX was I needed to get my vehicle to Pueblo to have the device removed at Five Star Auto Sales and Service, LLC 5 Star Auto in Pueblo OR face two years in jail for removing it myself.

Altogether, this whole incident cost me $1,500 in fees and costs from SmartStart, the tow would have been $400 but thanks to Jeff Richardson I didn't have to pay that, I had to buy another vehicle $2,000 and pay another $89 to get Intoxilock, their rival company, to install an interlock device in the new vehicle. During the time of my vehicle breaking down and buying the new one and getting it installed, I was pulled over with 2 days left to get my license back and now I lost my license until May of 2025 unless the special hearing from the DMV I have scheduled is going to allow me to drive considering the extenuating circumstances and my current situation. We all see and in the meantime, prayers up.

But IF YOU MAKE THE MISTAKE OF GETTING A DUI (which I did on Feb 2, 2021), then DO NOT EVER GO WITH SMARTSTART, they will not provide you customer service, they WILL overcharge you, they WILL NOT cooperate to remove the device if it your vehicle breaks down, they WILL charge you to keep it in your device, they WILL threaten to report you if you remove it yourself, they WILL overcharge YOU when THEIR device stops working and you have to send someone an hour away to get a new device while you're at work, they WILL charge you LOCKOUT fees for when THEIR device stops working, they WILL charge you an early service fee when THEIR device stopped working. They are straight GARBAGE/TRASH/BASURA - whatever you want to call it. Smart Start Ignition Interlock. Not to mention this happened right at my year threshold. Perfect all year and a problem on their end at the very last minute that could cost me my time and money on being legit for the "process."

No response either from the voice mails or the emails. So, I tried their toll free number, also to no avail.

Wait 4 hours otherwise this will send it to your state and you WILL have to go to counseling, which is more money. Take it from someone who is almost done with this device and has tried and failed a few times. Lockouts suck and you have about 5 days to get it to a shop and pay $75 each time. The agreement I signed had the following conditions. $20 AZ State Fee, $100 Removal Fee, $50 Violation Reset, $75 Lockout Fee and if I decide to change vehicles, $75 transfer fee. I declined the $89.99 warranty fee which was optional and was told verbally that the monthly was $40.00 per month. When I went back to reference by contract, that line item was conveniently left blank. When I realized I was being charged incorrectly and being billed for a warranty I clearly declined the contract.

I reached out to Smart Start customer service and they were less than helpful. They told me I would have to wait until the end of my MVD requirement for IID to dispute the incorrect billing. Shortly after my complaint, Smart Start locked me out, charged me $225 for lockout fees and reported 2 violations to MVD-ADOT for those lockouts. I had a hearing and thankfully ADOT did not find me at fault and dismissed those 2 violations. I continued to contact Smart Start to resolve the billing errors but when you call, they put you on hold for hours, disconnect you or simply hang up. If you use their call-back system, they do return your calls, they let it ring 2 times and when you pick up, they hang up.

Now I have completed my 12 months of interlock, and need the system removed per ADOT and they won't let me take it out because I am behind on payment. They are now charging me for the interlock systems claiming I stole it. If my simple math is correct, $40 multiplied by 12 months is $480.00 + Az fees, removal fees, install fees my total bill should be $610. They also charged me Arizona tax for their service, Az is a non-taxable state for services, except amusements, I am not sure if this device would be considered to most, an amusement. It is supposed to prompt me for random breath checks, which it does. It is also supposed to start a timer after the prompt is sent, which is also does. However, there are occasions where the "timer" expires before I can even get the portable breathalyzer out of my pocket. There are also occasions where the "random phrase" is not recognized, and the test has to be restarted. This is particularly frustrating due to the fact that a person is already up against a time constraint with completing a test.

My favorite malfunction is when it gets ALL the way through to the point that it prompts to blow into the device and then decides it cannot analyze a person's breath, which requires COMPLETELY restarting the entire process, including turning the portable device off and back on, and starting all over again. When it works the way that it should, it is a great device. Unfortunately, it doesn't often work the way that it should.

Non existent customer service after, all the help you want to get it though! Service messages, to then be charged because there wasn’t a service issue. They are top of the line scammers! I’ve been told by the installers to use Interlock. After three months I paid the additional $300 to have smart start removed and interlock put on. Just don’t do it! Infuriating! Please please be cautious with Ignition Interlock companies like SmartStart, because predatory companies like this exist industry-wide. However, also please do not choose Smart Start as your interlock provider! The company has no desire to provide a functional service. Their service is really just a money grab from a captive audience. I was unable to start my car for two days, because of their absolute lack of service.

    What to expect:

Expect MINIMUM 30 minute wait if you have to call in, but most times it's 90-120 minutes.

Expect to call in frequently. I had to almost every month, and the months I had to? Usually 10+ calls.
Expect SmartStart to drain car batteries.

Expect to get random failures, like autopayment failures and subsequent same-day device lockouts.

Failed to charge my card automatically multiple times. When the charge fails, the car is no longer operable, and to get it running requires a 30-120 minute call.
Expect ambiguous messages that require calls to customer service.
Expect no one you speak to at their customer service line to know how to help with anything.
Expect Smart Start to never return your call after you're a customer (before you're a customer? They'll call you back instantly).
Expect to pay more when you sign the contract than quoted.
Expect the device to not update your case manager or the courts, even if you pay extra for the service.
Expect to pay hidden fees for everything.
Expect SmartStart to call back immediately when calling their sales line (I submitted my info on their website just to see if someone would call me back and I got a call back within 5 seconds of hitting submit. I'm not joking. 5 seconds versus 120 minutes????!).

Expect their Service Techs to seem knowledgeable and drastically different from their customer service group, but good luck anyone.

I hope this review helps temper expectations when it comes to SmartStart, and will hopefully even deter individuals from choosing them as their ignition interlock provider. I would encourage everyone to call the companies they plan to do business with and see how difficult it is to get to customer service, or some individual who can answer questions.

I had my Smart lock installed, and after a year and some months my case we closed I got the approval to have it removed. I went back to have it taken out. Pier was so rude. I told him I was not the person with his rudeness. While I went upfront to pay I was told my bill was only $80 due to Pier. My car was running and I drove home. On Sat the car wouldn’t start. I waited until Monday when I spoke with Edgar (owner). He did come out to my home, and in 5 mins the car started. I said to Edgar, "Pier did something wrong. Didn’t he." Edgar replied he took short cuts installing and uninstalling. I knew something was not right. Edgar stated, "When you get time bring it in and we can check out." He didn’t say, "I just did a quick fix and bring it in as soon as you can."

2 weeks ago I emailed him twice and no answer. I finally got in touch with him at the shop. I explained to him my mother was very sick and she passed away on the 20th Of August. I did tell him I wasn’t driving the car a lot because I didn’t want to leave my mother. I asked if I could bring it the next day. He said they were really busy, maybe on Wednesday, I couldn’t reach him nor on Thursday, same thing. When I called the Corporate office and I explained to her, she stated she would call and see If he could reach him. She came back in the phone. He told her that he told me to bring it by and I didn’t so he had No intention on fixing it. This is really a shame that I have to go thru all of this when he know he is liable.

I have had this device for over 1 year with no issues via an automatic debit monthly payment. This July, Smart Start failed to initiate my auto debit but sent a notice saying it wouldn't go through. Checked with my bank, funds were available and no charge was attempted. I quickly changed my form of payment to a CC to make sure it was paid. Payment posted 07/02 then a subsequent charge was posted on 7/6 so my account now shows delinquent. In August, Smart Start never withdrew a payment so I called and was told my account was in order. In September, my monthly rate was changed and I'm now being charged $21.00 more per month. They also charged me twice, refunded one of these charges which continued my account in a "delinquent" status.

After speaking with a representative, she said the change in cost was due to state taxes which proved untrue. After many attempts, this company cannot tell why, after their initial error, I am now paying more than the original contract stated. They only offer that they have a "terms and conditions" clause. I truly feel that their original error in July is the catalyst that changed my terms although smart start will not acknowledge that. We are held hostage in this system and smart start seems to be using this to their financial advantage. They are extremely difficult to get ahold of. Phone wait times are usually 90 minutes or more. They offer a callback system which is useless - They either don't call back or when they do, I receive dead air. This company needs to have some accountability to their customers.

Buyer beware! I am very thorough and ask a lot of questions and still had many unfavorable surprises. Reps are ill-informed. Window for install was $99-249? Pretty vague.. Shops can charge what they want I have 2006 and was charged the top price for install $249. There’s 7% tax in monthly bill…enrollment fee was taxed. Auto pay has no benefits. And the promotional 50% off my first month’s bill is $56.99 which would make my bill $ 114. Only it’s 107.49. I’m on my 4th phone call. The rep said she thinks tax went up … I had it installed for 4 days ago the tax has not gone up.

The reps give false information which I do not appreciate at this stage in the game …we are broke, defeated and getting put through the wringer while paying for a device we don’t want but are being forced to do is inhumane and unethical. 4 days and I’ve almost had a few accidents as I’m not making it to the full blow amounts of time on the surprise blows and taking 4 times each.. by the fourth if you fail you get locked out and I’m having full panic attacks on the road from fear of getting in trouble.. Make the driving blows shorter. We are not prepared to take deep breaths when we are caught off guard.. It’s dangerous! The whole process is torture start to finish.

Been using this device for 5 weeks now. I've never missed a rolling test or blown anything other than a .000%. Took a break to run across the street to get gas and blew into the device to start the car. Got gas and it had me blow into it again (5 min later) normal procedure. Couple min later it says VIOLOCK04day on the handheld display. Called installation place and said I have to bring it back in for another calibration even though I just calibrated it last week $93.00. Go back today and they claim I missed a rolling test. (I know my device never beeped during that time.) I was told unless I paid the $80 additional dollars I would be locked out and car wouldn't start.

Don't know if anyone has ever tried to speak to an actual live person at Smart Start but good luck. I swear they just keep pushing around an automated system till you give up and hang up. I know I'm in this situation with the interlock because of my own poor choices but claiming I missed a rolling test that I KNOW I didn't then charge me with no other option is just taking advantage of people and their situation. Hopefully I can write enough reviews and tell enough people to steer them clear of Smart Start and Poor customer service when you really need help.

Several horrible experiences with this company. First they are not the cheapest as claimed by their aggressive sale reps. They take pride in the fact they don’t charge for calibration. Why would they? Their monthly fee is close to $100. Plus, $80 start up. Their removal fee is $75 and an additional $45 administrative fee which they don’t show you on the fee list you sign. I paid an extra $30 monthly by not selecting a different company, believing that this one would be better because it’s bigger.

By being bigger, good luck trying to reach a human being. When you call needing help if you’re lucky enough to reach a human, most are unable to help because of the lack of knowledge in performing their duties or the absence of information needed to resolve the issue. Aside from the irritation of an inept customer service; I also experienced two personal matters in which I disputed online. The first, well more of a warning to hybrid owners, when you turn off your vehicle wait until all the displays light turn off. The interlock system slows your car’s system shutdown. This happened to me, I disputed and lost. Not really surprised, I mainly wanted my version of this incident on file.

The second matter and the one I believe is truly unjust is a $37.89 fee for a missed appointment that I did not schedule. Smart Start set my appointment for the 25th, I showed up the 26th early for my set calibration. My set date for payment and calibration is the 28th every single month since I started this program. I spoke with the tech who called the back office and spoke with a billing rep. I explained to rep how the 28th is my set date and that I would be getting the device removal shortly. The rep told me that if I could have the device removed by the first that the charge would be voided. I told the rep that I wasn’t positive that I could which then the rep told me that I would need to dispute it online. So I did. Shockingly I did happily have the device removed on the 30th. Unfortunately, smart start did not honor their agreement and I received a confusing email that stated:

    “Incident Report Follow Up
    8/26/23
Thank you for contacting Smart Start.
We have placed your description of the event as a note on your file should it ever be needed in the future.
Unfortunately this fee is no longer eligible for courtesy credits after the one month grace period ending on 8/11/23.

    Thank you.”

I called and left messages inquiring about the email and of course no one replied. I gave one more go at it today where I did speak with a rep that basically told me that I was denied and that there’s no way for me to reach a supervisor.

Hello, I have been fighting with this box/company forever now. This system is flawed and kills batteries. Two tow truck drivers who have had to help me the last 4 times showed me this box has killed my battery and I was charged $45 every single time. This flaw is what is causing the dead batteries. My particular box went into its own loop and was erroring and from that I missed an appointment and was forced again to pay for yet another unlock code and missed appointment fee. I was told on the phone by customer service that when I arrived finally to my second appointment altering having the box force me to miss my first that my amount owing to drive away would be maximum $160.

When I got there I owed $199. This has been happening to me since the box was installed in my car 15 months ago. The box has since been removed and my battery has not died since. I have been denied my refund 3 times now because they claim that the box does not kill batteries. I was not refunded the unlock codes the box error forced me to get it for the missed appointment fee I was charged because of the error. This has been the worst experience of my life. Smart Start Canada has been denied accreditation by the Better Business Bureau for not assisting customers issues and this allows them to operate unchecked with complete impunity. How a government supported business can get away with such damaging business practices.

She replied "Oh that’s fine, it should turn off, you may need to cycle the truck on and off a few times." ** and a I don’t care answer. Immediately after leaving the house/shop the truck had no throttle response and could not maintain speed. I messaged Anne and told her the truck was not drivable and sent a picture of the warning lights. No response at all. Later on, I was told the MVD had no record of the device even being installed. Again I reached out to Anne asking for help. Again no response.

Now my truck is finally ready to be picked up from the mechanics. The interlock keeps saying abort pump. 45 minutes to get through to someone and the only solution I could get was to have the truck towed to a Smart Start facility. Over 2 weeks without a vehicle and a huge bill I’m going to have to fight to get reimbursed I’m sure and now your phone support person says, "Sorry our device isn’t working correctly, you’ll have to have it towed to us." More time and money I will need to fight to be reimbursed. Device installed 8/9 and the truck hasn’t been able to be driven yet. Extremely disappointed.

My problem with them is the costs involved and the fact that their website shows that you can purchase an extension for your interlock to not lock you out but in fact it's not an extension just away for them to take your money when you file a report about it they tell you that the extensions are not too extend the calibration of your Interlock system. But the website does not State anywhere that it's not for calibration system. So you think that you have an extension when you indeed get locked out and you have to pay the lockout service fee as well as the same months service charge. So my bill that is normally $74.95 turned into $225. Buyer beware when you look at their website they are very unclear and will rob you of your money regretfully the states require you to have interlock for a certain period and they know this and they take full advantage of it.

I was required to install a Smart Start ignition interlock device as part of my DUI sentence. I was initially excited to get the device, as I thought it would be a next step towards license restoration. However, I was quickly disappointed with the device. The first problem I had with the device was that it was outdated. The device was slow and clunky, and it often froze up. One time, while I was driving, the device froze and started flashing and beeping. This caused me to panic, and I almost caused an accident.

Another problem I had with the device was that it often made me blow multiple times before it accepted a test. This was very frustrating, especially when I was in a hurry. Finally, I had a violation lock that Smart Start claimed was due to me shutting off my car when it was asking for a test. I am positive that I did not shut off my car, and Smart Start would not provide me with any proof of fault. They charged me $75 for the violation, and it took almost 3 weeks to find out the reason. Overall, I was very disappointed with the Smart Start ignition interlock device. It is a dated and unreliable device that I would not recommend to anyone. There are better devices out there, and this is one that you should never consider unless you want to lose your license.

I cannot recommend this company to anyone in need of their services. First and foremost, customer service is abysmal. I have never dealt with such incompetence. Their product becomes useless at the end of each month and goes into service lockdown. Despite paying a monthly leasing fee for the device on time, it refuses to function as it should. It is disheartening to think that a product intended to serve a crucial function can be this unreliable.

To make matters worse, customer service is a complete waste of time. I spent six hours on the phone with them and learned the same repeated tricks and tips that made 0 progress toward resolving my issue. The first time I called, the representative hung up on me without understanding my problem and put me back on a ridiculously long hold time. Their staff is not adequately trained to handle customer queries, leading to extended wait times and a lack of results.

The kicker of this dreadful experience is the additional charge I received for servicing the device to get it to work. It is beyond me why I should have to pay for their mistake. I won't be surprised if the device goes into service lockdown again because their customer service is the slowest and most incompetent ever. I strongly advise against using SmartStart's services. The lack of functionality of their device, combined with their awful customer service and questionable billing practices, make for a dreadful experience that is not worth anyone's time or money.

But guess what, YOU ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE STILL. 2nd Issue - Was the same as the 1st. 3rd Issue - I made a payment within my count-down hours and hours prior to my lockout. Guess what? It locked me out and here is why I have decided to write a review on every single site I can cause this is completely UNACCEPTABLE. Especially when you are messing with people's lives and potential violations to their parole officers. Not only did I make a payment hours before the lockout.

Upon calling at their customer service for HELP as this should be a priority to them as it is not allowing their client to blow within their window that could potentially cause errors. I called them at 6pm, put on hold for 30 minutes to finally get a hold of someone. Only to put me on hold again for Service. Another 30 minutes. 7pm comes around, their system hung up on me during my wait-time. Now they’re stating their offices are closed. I continue to call another line for service. Been on hold since then.

Here we are an hour and half into the phones call. With ABSOLUTE NO HELP and my time to blow before 8pm. Now they will put you on hold for a MINIMUM of 45 minutes. How the hell do you expect them to get their resolution resolved and of all three issues I have had to call in. A MINIMUM of one hour wait time. Sometime 2-hours and good luck getting it resolved same day. Now you find yourself worried sick to your stomach hoping your parole office will understand cause now not only will you miss one blow, you will miss the evening blow and the next morning's blow. Guess what? If they send you to a service center. YOU HAVE TO PAY! But I made my payment hours before my lockout. DO NOT GIVE THESE GUYS YOUR BUSINESS. No phone call back nothing?!?! It’s been a month?!?? I called to reschedule the appt as we are stuck in BC and I called at 842 am (BC time) and the appt was at 9:15 am. Your client care (called back at 0910 (BC) time and wants to charge me a cancelation fee. You ** kidding me!!! After last place told me about you guys being a money grab I'm actually starting to believe it because the box was you guys' fault that we kept having to pay to get it recalibrated because. Wasn’t installed properly installed and then this 20 min shy of 24 hr Alberta time and we get no refund back from all the money we spent in past that it wasn’t our fault and what about the extra few months added on because of it?!?! Bunch of money grab!!!

Like one of your employee said to me “Well we all need to get paid somehow“ and you guys do that kind of ** so you keep money flowing!!! What kind of customer service are you???? ** ones clearly. We have spent almost over 1000 since January 2022. Anyways I want a call back thanks!! He no longer drinks but your machine has costed us enough and every time it screwed up since January we got few months added on!!! Wtf eh anyways hope to talk to you soon as I am not very impressed and hoping that you can maybe agree that you need better customer service skills!! Thanks.

This was the last complaint I wrote over a month ago. I keep getting told a manager will call but nothing??!? Again where is your customer service skills. People are force to have this program but clearly you guys are all about the money not the success passing rate!!!! Just a lil reminder no names edit some changes but it’s like the one I send over a month. Just wanted to remind you that you still haven’t called.

"He got a lock out violation. When he was driving to BC for work 2 week prior and blew a hernia while blowing into your machine while driving kept saying, "Blow harder, blow harder…. Blow harder!!" He blew a hernia!! Yea so now he might be needing surgery. He was running out of unlock codes so the machine has been acting up non stop…. With mouth closer…breath longer.... breath harder.... and He works 6 days on, 1 off and his day off is on Sunday and he is 2 hrs north of Prince George. And he was running out of time and couldn’t take the time off work to go get it recalibrated.

I myself (girlfriend) took my personal car and took time off work to drive from Devon Alberta to Fraser lake BC to get car done for him while he was at work.... so this was an expensive recalibrate!!! So once I got an appt in Prince George for May 18/2022 at 12. So I drove to Prince George 2hr drive to appt from Fraser lake.... once I got to andre electronics I was already kinda on edge and complaining that his wiring needs fixing and it’s always ** up and costing us an arm and a leg. He told me that Smart Start has it set that was because everyone needs a pay check and that you guys were a money grab!!!

So if you check this past few months!! We have spent a lot of money towards this damn box and every time there is a lock a month gets added on so we have to spend more money towards this blow box.... so when this staff told me that I was like wtf!! was not impressed as I spent 12 hrs to drive to location where he was working and then 2 hrs to Andre electronics the next day after booking appt and then to bring the car back to Fraser lake and the next day drive back to Devon Alberta....

Violation lock came back on at 1830h the same day May 18th 2022. I myself was there and witnessed it. I got it fixed earlier on that day anyways!! I'm pissed I called smart start, told them what the staff at Andre electronics said to me about money grab and how everyone needs a paycheck!! So anyways not impressed by the service I receive there!!! When I mention to the staff at Andre electronics that there was wiring issue or something going on!! He also told me (girlfriend) we would have to book another apt to get it fixed.... and there about a month to get in!!

Isn’t his job to make sure the box is working and that we aren’t stranded because we keep getting violation lock. I paid 162 that day and and again the violation lock on same day!! So guess what now!!! Thank god dallas got weekend off but was the long week end most places were closed! So we drove down together (change of plans again because this box is causing us nothing headaches) so now Dallas had to take the day off Tuesday to get car in white court while suppose to be in BC Fraser lake for work!! Again!!! Losing money!!! So lost day pay again!! He has had this box for almost 7 years and been a lot of money wasted because it’s the equipment that keeps screwing up.

So please take a look at his file. Would be greatly appreciated if you took the time to maybe speak with alberta transportation and mention that it’s the equipment. Yes there was two battery dead because car was in shop but to be honest now it just turns off and on while driving!! So it has a mind of its own!! So we can be stranded places anywhere and anytime!!! How safe is that when my children are with us.

The Edmonton south location has changed the head within the past month… we have had nothing but problem for past few months…. Since we got told that box would be out on June 20th 2022. And this day we got told was on April 21/2022 at the south side location in Edmonton!! I write everything down so I ask the staff at Andre electronics!! Do they do things so you can never get off this blow box program and we have to keep paying and paying??? He said that comment I was speechless!!! Furious.

If Andre electronics would of fixed the issue with the box. Wiring It wouldn’t of had costed us as much as it already did by having me drive there!!! Or even Edmonton south side location when we mentioned it and gave us issues they just gave us new head and cord and along the way we go. But again violation lock. Every time this box screws up it’s costing us a lot of money!! So try out to find out what the problem is such as new head cords?!?!? That should be on you guys' dime if receive violation lock!! Because it’s your product malfunctioning not us!!

But the lady that I have been dealing with in the evenings on the telephone has been really wonderful and understanding with our situation.... Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am frustrated and disappointed that this box is costing us way too much as He no longer drinks anymore. Please feel free to call me."

Smart Start is the worst company, of any type, to work with. Device worked 50% of time. I had to replace unit 3 times. Closest Service center was 30 miles away. I had to have vehicle towed to service center twice at my expense although the reason for towing was their fault. Calling main company is a nightmare. Hold times are up to 90 minutes. Once I was on hold for 90 minutes and call was terminated. Can take up to ten (10) prompts before speaking with human being. I am very hard of hearing and would miss "blows" resulting in violations. All they could do was install flashing light which was difficult to see and I had to take my eyes off road to see it. I requested a vibrating device that I could place in my lap but was told they did not offer that feature.

The service center was very nice and did the best they could but my real complaints are about the call center. Many were poorly trained, and usually had to wait for a supervisor to resolve my issue. The expense was horrendous, commute time long, and they were constantly changing policy. For example: when I first started the service center was open weekends making it easier for us working individuals. Then poof! No more weekend access without prior warning. I can't leave enough negative feedback for this company. I would not recommend them to anyone and for that reason I am leaving 1 star. The only employee that stands out for excellent performance is Jessica. She was great at customer service.

The guy who did my installation and does my monthly maintenance is the rudest person I’ve ever dealt with. He actually yelled at me for paying online instead of paying at the shop one month. He never smiles, he acts like he’s better than you, and he’s always right, or he thinks he is. I’ve been dealing with this for over a year and decided after I was locked out of my car at the airport in Atlanta from being gone two weeks, I was switching companies. Well so I thought. I received permission to have the device taken out 3 weeks ago and nothing. I even called last week and the lady told me there was no record of the approval letter written from the state.

Now, I’ve got to drive an hour to see this very rude and very hard to be around shop technician. My advice… stay away!!! Smart Start thinks they are superior to even the law, and you almost have to get the law involved just to have the device removed. Poor customer service, customer relations, poor prices, poor policies, poor device (the humming is **), overall the worst experience I’ve had in years!

Can't imagine how this company stays in business. Every single interaction with these people has been a disaster, and their only response is...no response. They installed a defective device on my stepdaughter's vehicle that resulted in false reports to the DMV and an unwarranted extension of the fine period - and a 50% increase in the fees Smart Start collected. When the compliance period was complete, they failed to file the paperwork with the DMV, despite sending us an email saying they did. There is no ability to escalate a discussion to a supervisor, and attempts to file a complaint are ignored. Absolutely THE WORST business I've ever had the displeasure to deal with.

The worst company.. do not consider them. I’ve had the device in my car for only 3 weeks and have had nothing but problems which have cost me more money. Their systems is old and outdated and does not work most of the time. When It fails they make you tow your car at your expense and then make you pay to fix It. So it’s not affordable. Their reps are Rude and unhelpful. Save yourself a big headache and go to another company. Better to pay a little more and not get stuck with hidden fees because of defective equipment.

2010 Camaro SS. Had device installed. Worked to get my car home, then would not work next day (hum harder 73 times in a row)... Got it in after calling and having them be no help. Service provider tried it wouldn't work so he installed new device.... car died on way home. My hubby is a mechanic... he pulled out the "snap-on" (no cheapy) code reader and it has fried the computer... Needless to say can't drive my car and get to pay for an extremely expensive part. Thank god labor isn't much ... now I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to keep frying vehicles so I guess I don't drive... pretty counter intuitive.

I can not get to a live representative who can Give me any pertinent information. I just get endlessly transferred. I called their collections department and someone answered on the FIRST ring! Shocking. I was told I owe an extra $54 now for not bringing the car in on my service date... my car that is in the shop, that I can not drive. Hmmmmm. Oh and I should have filed an incident report? First I've heard of this. This is the absolute worst company I have dealt with. It's terrifying to have your life in the hands of this company.

I have had my ID installed for 4 out of the 7 years required now. First year and second year weren't too bad. The 3rd and 4th years my device starts malfunctioning, recording false positives, violating on its own with it not being touched, and randomly it will beep, get stuck, won't stop beeping or let me take the test, and causing me more problems than it's worth. Customer Service is rude, unfriendly, treats you inhumane because you have the device and it takes 2+ hrs to actually speak with someone if your device is already installed. If you fail a test (in case of a contaminant) but still pass with the following blow, you will pay $53 per service visit. This is additional to the monthly or bi-monthly service charge. And just hope you live in a town that has a service center open more than one day a week. Actually went to my monthly appt. And nobody was there.

Come to find out the guy was passed out on the couch inside from his pain medication. So I freaked out and drove over an hour trying to get to the next closest service center before they closed (this is how long it took customer service to answer). Don't think for one second these people care about you. Even proven device malfunctioning they won't check my wiring or anything after telling me they would. I had the device swapped out but it's still messing up, hello?? These people act like you're stupid and don't know anything. If It was up to me I'd slam the doors on this worthless, greedy, heartless business. If possible, go elsewhere.

As part of my sons plea deal he agreed to have the blow device in his car for one year. It has now been two years that it has been on. When we called many times, we can never actually talk to a person. EVER. When we called the DMV we were told that it was reported that the device was removed. Transferred and had been tampered with. All of which was not true.

We were told due to this negative report he has to keep it on another year from the date of the report. We have done everything possible to try and reach someone and gets this straightened, out to no avail. We took it in two weeks ago to be calibrated. They had no clue what they were doing at the new place we took it to. The tech called Smart Start for instructions. They told him to remove it and un attach the GPS then try. He did as instructed. calibrated it and said we are good to go. Two weeks later its on Locked out. For zero reason. How do I know all this? It's my car.

Again it was reported that it was removed and reinstalled. Yes, that time it was. BY SMART START! So now his year starts all over from that date. There seems to be no way to fight this. Its literally causing my son and I so much distress and a huge financial burden. Yes, my son made a huge mistake and he learned his lesson. He was never in any trouble in his life before and nor since. He is Bipolar and and has been extremely depressed to the point of suicide. He is so discouraged and is ready to give up his license and get out from under this nightmare company.

The fact that our laws allow a company like this to rip off people over and over again ,with no recourse, is disgusting. The fact that my mentally ill son is so discouraged to the point he's willing to give up his license to make this nightmare be over, is heartbreaking. If there are any attorneys here maybe a class action law suit? I would be totally in for that. If you have a choice, (we did not) use any company but not this one.

I have been using Smart Start for over a year. 11 months in I was pulled over, arrested, charged with a misdemeanor and car impounded. Smart start never sent in my monthly reports even though I never missed an appointment or payment. A company representative reached out to me to tell me he'd take care of it. I ask, "Define take care of it." He gives me his email and tells me to send him receipts etc. I sent him my invoice from the city I had to pay to give my car back and the tow truck and my attorney invoice. A month has passed me. I have not heard any response from the company. Like I said I already had to pay my attorney as I have already one court date and at least one future one. If you decide to use this company, you better hope to have no issues, because if you do, good luck trying to reach someone in customer service who cares or can actually do something.

I signed up back in September with Smart Start over the phone and the representative collected ALL my information. Lo and behold each time I would call in and the system asked me for my last 4 of ss, date of birth and so forth, it would state it did not recognize my information. After speaking to a very nice and knowledgeable representative she re-entered my information.

Here's the problem: She also went on to ask me some questions that APPARENTLY were to have been asked previously and the one that she was adamant about was as she stated, the DMV required 2 names of next of kin. Do not believe this!!! I have been to the DMV and confirmed that is not required. She was insensitive to my situation which I only have my husband listed and do not have parents or children!! It completely irritated me!! That is a way to get in touch with your closest family members in case you do not return the device installed in your vehicle. Seriously???? Who would want to steal it and have it in their vehicle any longer???
